More like Modern Sounds in Big Band. Kept thinking this album is gonna get better, didn’t happen. I guess ya had to be there 60+ years ago when the sound was modern, it now sounds really dated. Comes in near the top of the 1001 too long albums list, though. Best song is Hey, Good Lookin’ because it sounds nothing like the other songs on the album. Wanted to like the album more, but no matter how historic I can’t rate it above (1.2*s)

The album title makes a big claim and Ray doesn't back it up. Too much orchestra, not enough country. I'm not sure why this is scoring so highly elsewhere, it's monotonous, repetitive, long, and boring. Dear Album: Put These Chains Back On My Heart because I Can Stop Loving You.

I like Ray's voice but the songs sound very repetitive on this album. Background music is simple big band with not a lot of variety. Feels like label just put Ray in a sound box and pumped cookie cutter tunes in for him to belt out.

Some of the background tunes with strings and orchestra are nice but otherwise it is a series of similar sounding tunes arranged to a similar treatment. Maybe this was a refreshing take on some classics at the time. For me it was just a set of redundant, relatively dull love/soul songs. 1.20 stars.

I did not enjoy listening to this album. 1.25 hours of the same love some repeated over and over. Ray has limitless talent but it didn't shine through on this album. 1/5

Swelling strings and soulless backup singing straight out of 1960s America. No thanks. Ray Charles is the GOAT, though

What even is this? It’s like big band with terribly annoying back up singers. I did not like and could not force myself to listen even though Ray Charles’ voice is awesome.

How did an album of covers make it onto this list? It's not terrible, but rating a 1 cause this album shouldn't be on this list.

So slow and boring nearly the entire time. Ray has great lyrics, but this just doesn't do it for me. I tried to give it a go, but I can't make it all the way through. I like the 60s, however, not these 60s.

I loathed this. I like most of the original songs. I’m not a huge fan of Ray Charles. The music and arrangements made me feel like I was in some sort of 1960s suburban hellscape. This album would have fit in on the soundtrack of movies like ‘The Stepford Wives’, ‘Don’t Worry, Darling’ or ‘Get Out’.

Gosh Ray, you recorded a misery album, a double misery album at that. Honestly, you have to wonder how many blokes slit their wrists listening to this. It's not bad it's just miserable. Women are just jilting, cheating bitches and Ray is full of unrequited love. What happened?

Various C&W and folk music standards from the 50's and 60's reworked by Ray Charles in various styles including R&B, pop, and jazz. Not for me.

Really not in the mood for this, listened to some but didn't enjoy it. I did have a hangover, but even so, just don't enjoy the big band sound.

Ray Charles and a big band. Just what you’d expect from that combo. Doesn’t do anything for me.

Things I hate: 1. Being force fed the music of legends that is NOT AT ALL LEGENDARY 2. Country and western that is not from the 70s 3. Covers of songs I don't care about by artists I don't care about. ✅✅✅

Honestly, this is a weaker Ray Charles album. I would probably rate it at a 2, but I want the 1950s to stop being my favorite decade on this website.
