Reviews (page 10 of 14)

Overall a 3 I think. I was not really inspired by this but I didn't dislike it. Some of beats were good for working with it on in the background.

interesting, one big hit, hasn't stood the test of time

Strong 3.5, long album like

Seemed like fun by I was not in a good Gorillaz mood yesterday

Man this album was weird; did not expect that!

A solid classic, not may favourite music genre, but this album harbours a few classics that I could happily stick on repeat!

a classic really, not my favourite Gorillaz album but still a great album.

Not as funky rave as some of their later songs

Funky, British techno pop

Got some real bangers just no demon days

I liked this! More than I was expecting to honestly. Still not over that it is the Blur guy

an enjoyable listen, love Clint Eastwood

good first half, lost me in the 2nd

if i'd heard more songs from this album like 5 months ago, i wouldn't have been so shocked to find out damon from blur is also in this band. i feel betrayed he didn't tell me earlier, but still my bad an ok album, but still nowhere near their best

I love Demon Days and also think Plastic Beach is great, and Clint Eastwood is a great song, so I was ready to love this and unfortunately it's just a bit boring. The tight ideas, memorable songs, etc. aren't really there. It's kind of amazing to me that Demon Days came out after this given how good and tight everything is on there compared to this. This kind of feels like a proto-Gorillaz grab-bag rather than a properly written and put together album. Alas.

I do not think it aged well

Generic, low effort. Sonically decent at times, middle of the road album.

I wasn't down with the gimmick at the time and dismissed Gorillaz out of hand from the jump. Going back and listening to the album, I don't feel a main through line to it although there are a few standout tracks. Try as I might, I don't find the album very compelling. It's definitely too long and wanders into early 00 musical territory I'm not particularly interested in spending my time in having heard it explored better elsewhere. I feel like this record in particular should also be judged by its cover. I think Tank Girl is rad, but this record cover is bland.

I'm glad this album is on the list, and I like a number of elements here...but The Gorillaz just don't quite do it for me. I like a bunch of alt-rock bands, and I like a bunch of bands that blend rap with other genres, so I'm not quite sure why this doesn't work for me as it seems like it should. I don't dislike it, but I feel like I should like it more. 3.0

It’s like a massive attack and Radiohead collaboration with a tablespoon of melodica and a teaspoon of Goldan Age Hip-Hop. One thing is certain though, these tracks are undeniably fun and a few of them manage to be timeless.

This would be a good listen if I was chilling with my very white friends in an underdeveloped basement while we were stoned one night in 2002. Outside of this oddly specific scenario, it's a very generic alt rock album. There's nothing interesting, and it's giving me no reason to want to listen to it again. There was absolutely nothing catchy about it, and ever song just sounded like a repeat in which a monotone voice said nonsense lyrics with a standard electronic drum beat and some hip hip thrown in. It's not music as much as it is noise. Yet it's branded as 'cool' so wallflower teenagers can claim to have better music taste than the rest of us.

I liked it, made me dance, it is a good ambient album but some songs are a little too saturated for me, i'm not a fan of the samples of alarms. I loved "Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo)" which has a more instrumental musical background

Gorillas got one kick-ass debutt with Gorillaz! Clint leads the way, butt great variety and sense of humor throughout. That they’re virtual / animated makes em even more fun. J = (4.3*s) L = meh (2.7*s)

didn't listen, but I listened some of the songs years ago and it was nice

Some really remarkable moments among a mediocre garage band effort. Covers a lot of genre-ground. Vocals need help.

Sono sempre stato affascinato dal concetto dei Gorillaz però boh, speravo mi piacesse di più

Surprisingly good album

Like the variety of music on this album

My daughter introduced me to the Gorillaz back in the day. There are several songs I enjoy by this band and think they have a very unique sound and style. But I'm not sure this is the album I would have chosen for this list. I knew Clint Eastwood before listening and this was my favorite tune off this album. And despite enjoying my listens, this album couldn't get me to that "excited to hear the next song" level. Quite the opposite, I felt like this album played out a little too long. Again, I enjoyed it for the most part but can't say I'd go back and revisit without being talked into it. 3

3.5 I’ve never been a big Gorillaz guy, though I’ve always found the concept pretty cool - a fictional, cartoon band that performs songs composed by Blur’s Damon Albarn and just about any other British musical icon he can get ahold of? It’s unique, fun in concept, and also the only reason Americans probably recognize the name Damon Albarn aside from being the dude who did the “woo-hoo” song from the 90s. But, in execution, something about this “group” always felt kind of underwhelming to me. Like, Feel Good Inc.? Not feeling it. However, this album was a pleasant surprise for me. I didn’t realize that Gorillaz border more on the edge of hip hop territory than they do alternative rock, and something about that combined with the overall lo-fi, chill ambience of this album really worked for me. I’ve heard the song Clint Eastwood a few times before (shoutout to my sibling, Ashten) and was never a big fan, but it worked for me a lot more hearing it within the context of this album. I also didn’t realize until now that that’s Del the Funky Homosapien rapping on it - the dude has one of my favorite songs from Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 (If You Must), so I think learning that’s him helped me appreciate the track a bit more. Overall, I thought just about everything here was enjoyable, but I do feel like it started to lose me a bit towards the end. I believe M1 A1 is supposed to be the proper closing track to the album, and it’s a pretty solid one at that, but I felt myself slowly losing interest somewhere in the stretch of Latin Simone to Slow Country. And while I won’t factor them into my review, the bonus tracks after did nothing for me, with the remix of Clint Eastwood being something I found borderline egregious. Still, solid album with a good vibe to it, and I don’t have anything negative to point to except for maybe the opening vocals on Sound Check (Gravity) - let’s not try that falsetto thing again, Damon. I’ll give a final shoutout again to Ashten for good taste, and I’ll throw one to my dad as well for his Gorillaz gym shirt I think he acquired/may have stolen from them - will definitely have to dive more into this project’s back catalog.

Funky sample filled cod indie from cartoon funsters. My kids loved it. It doesn't sound as radical as it did on release. The following 2 albums are better.

once again, choke in my own blood fake therapist help me put on a smile though my crooked back smells of death i shall flop along the pavement please, father, packed like frozen tuna and melting stares im a sinner with a burning veil living with a rotted mouth

I don't like dislike this album. I just don't like it either. Not really a fan of most of the falsetto singing. It's always (intentionally?) off-key and grates on me. I think the composition of all the music is really good though. It is right in my wheelhouse, so it's hard to completely write Gorillaz off. But that singing is...yeesh. A song I'd never heard before that I really liked was "Double Bass" had a similar feel to Beck with that suburban techno-funk sound (and no falsetto!)

I have listened to a few bangers off of this album, but never the whole thing. I gotta say that I was a little underwhelmed by the majority of songs on this record. Most were rather boring and felt like fillers. Clint Eastwood and 5/4 just barely carry this album to a 3 for me. However, It is definitely a great record for their first major album.

Classic late 90s Brit Alt Rock. Some songs are fine, some are great. Obviously the standouts were radio hits, but some good additional tracks. Aged ok and is worth a listen years later.

Apart from eastwood and tomorrow never comes, the rest didnt hit the right notes. A decent project album i guess. I associate the G's with their later stuff i guess. Not for me this one. Low 3.

For me, Gorillaz was always the music that the cooler older kids listened to. By the time I had my own mp3 player Demon Days had been released and I thought all of it sounded like future music. I'm glad I gave this one a listen because it always happened that the hits were the ones that got the most airplay at the mall and on TV, and great songs like "M1 A1" were overshadowed by their more popular counterparts. Still don't prefer it to DD but it has some of my favorite Gorillaz tracks.

Although a good album it does have the feel of a band that hasn't really hit their stride yet. The highlights of the albums all involve a deltron 3030 member who add a lot of stability to the album. Gorillaz follow up album, Demon Days, is a much better project.

Man do I love two of these songs. Man can I live without the rest.

Pretty good

Slot should have gone to Demon Days

the instrumentals are SICK

Not every track justifies its existence but plenty do. Better than a cartoon side project probably has any right to be

The first half is weaker, but the second half is great. Similar to the Chemical Brothers' debut album, this one likely had a unique impact in the early 2000s.

Love gorillaz, a couple I had saved already actually

Good, but repetitive after awhile.

Un po' vibes Linkin park

Not as good as later albums

There's a lot of good stuff, but a lot of filler too.

Is gorillaz overrated?

Decent. 3.

Not bad

I like the singles, but the rest is just kinda .... I dunno, there. I applaud Damon Albarn pivoting far away from the jangly guitars of Blur to try something absolutely different.

With Clint Eastwood and 19-2000 in tow, the album struggles to reach the heights of its hits.

Obviously, Clint Eastwood is pretty great (actor and song). The rest of the album, not so much. Many boring tracks, despite the stylistic versatility, which in turn you really have to appreciate. The album feels more like a sandbox in which musicians played around with different concepts and ideas. This also fits with the either very cryptic or very label-like song titles. Makes sense considering this is a debut of a virtual band. All in all ok music earning bonus points for creativity.

Always wondered what the hype about Gorillaz was. Still do. 3/5.

Many bands adopt stage personas, hiding behind elaborate makeup or costumes. Gorrillaz go one step further, being an entirely virtual band with cartoon avatars drawn in Jamie Hewlett’s distinctive style. Gimmicks aside, this is pretty good stuff - lo fi beats and samples, with a bit of rap thrown in, although I wonder how successful it would have been if it hadn’t been obvious from the start that Damon Albarn was behind it all.

Although still amid finding their footing fully, the Gorillaz debut is a fun mish mash of Albarn and co's skill in writing and producing acquired in the past, as well as a handful of perspective ideas to be made better in the future.

Muy lento

This was a big album for its time. It was highly experimental and innovative, which we take for granted now. Good beats and good music are what this album contains.

I'm sleeping

Classic.

Onhan tämä ihan hyvä! Seuraava tietysti hittiensä puolesta vielä ns isompi levy 3/5

Ennþá mjög gott stöff flest. Gæti samt stytt plötuna heldur mikið. 3,5 af 5.

Gorillaz is conceptually amusing, but ultimately doesn't really deliver beyond pastiche. Which I guess is appropriate. It's a nice enough album.

Rock the House-amusing lyrics Star Shine-haunting Clint Eastwood-catchy, playful 19-2000-love this song!! Couldn’t stop dancing! Fun first listen.

This’ll be sacrilege considering I LOVE Gorillaz, especially after seeing them live in September’22 (probably a top 3 concert experience I’ve ever had; such an amazing show), but I like this album, don’t love it. It’s a critical darling; rightly so considering Damon & Jamie’s unique musical/art conceptual creation that’s now 23 years in and still going strong, and some of the beats are next level, but I like some of their later stuff just a bit more.

Good but not great. Alot to like and alot to dislike. I can see why the band took off though

i have listened to this album before and gave it a score of 3.5. this album is packed full of fillers; ok but doesnt really stand out. i used to listen to gorillaz through their music videos back in middle school, so i’m familiar with the singles. that includes 5/4 as well, but i dont fw it as much as the other featured songs. as a standalone trip hop album, it’s pretty solid, but unfortunately since i dont care much about trip hop, its hard to stay interested in the rest of the album besides a couple tracks like new genius brother and sound check gravity. 3 personal favs: tomorrow comes today, rock the house, 19-2000 soulchild remix

I liked some of this. Clint Eastwood was a huge hit and something different at the time. But I think the album just went on too long. My guess is that if this didn’t involve Damon Albarn this wouldn’t even be on the list.

This one of the better 3s I've heard. Not quite a 4 though.

Some great songs, but mostly just ok. Feel like there where quite a few try hard songs that focuses on being different over being good.

I had a lot more hope that this would be really good.

clint eastwood goes crazy first half of album kinda blows last half was pretty good though 3/5 prob

Decent album

Great production, but too long, and not as catchy as later gorillaz 🤷

I like Gorillaz but they get much better in subsequent albums.

Not bad. Again its a solid album, great for what it is/was. I think Demon days is a better album overall

Clint Eastwood is a classic and I actually thought Slow Country was great, but a decent chunk of this was boring and pretty bad so it evens out. Never really understood the green virtual band concept.

Interesting concept -- some of it is pretty good but most is just "eh", Never knew the name of "that" song was Clint Eastwood

Interesting album, but not Albarn's best work as "Gorillaz". Still its very creative and a cool risk for an artist to take. "Clint Eastwood" will always remind me of the Andy Milonakis show.

This was a really fun album back when it first came out. This album is how I discovered Del The Funky Homosapien.

There are definitely better Gorillaz albums that probably would have been better for this list.

I remember when this came out, and being intrigued by the retro sounding instruments and beats set against decidedly modern lyrics and hip-hop-lite vocals. It was such a fun juxtaposition, though not something I listen to regularly.

Indicative of better things to come 3*

A few great high points (Clint Eastwood, 19-2000) and a fair bit of filler. Plastic Beach is a stronger album IMO

I remember when Clint Eastwood came out and my mind was blown. That song still holds up but the rest is kinda mid

Really strong first 10 tracks or so then peters out significantly, could have benefited from a little more curation. 5/4 is one of my favorites, and the variety keeps you engaged. There's some creative, catchy music here, and they are clearly experimenting with whatever catches their fancy. Good prelude to Demon Days, where they clearly found their sweet spot and sold boatloads of records.

This felt really different when it was released. Listening to it again (however many years later) I noticed how basic the production sounded, and not in a good (raw) way. Just really plasticky and flat. Del is probably the best thing about the record. I guess maybe the novelty of the ‘virtual band’ was what made it different, but musically it hasn’t stood the test of time.

I remember thinking that Damon Alburn had lost his mind when he started this band. These guys are one of those bands that have really good songs and not good at all songs. Choice cut: 5/4

Mostly pretty good. Just didn’t totally excite me.

Fun and eclectic

Clint Eastwood 19-2000

Luv gorillaz me 3.5 Got a little bit bored in between songs but some bangers in there Favs: Re-Hash, 5/4, Clint Eastwood, rock the house and 19-2000

3/5 - enjoyed! standout tracks: - ...Sound check (gravity) 4/5 - Clint Eastwood 5/5

Not my vibe.

Will come back to

I was looking forward to this one as I loved Clint Eastwood and the other singles back when it first came out but the rest was just filler. The Day of the Dead sample was pretty cool though.

It's well written and the production is solid but, for me at least, it just isn't that interesting.

This album sounded like October in ways I can not describe

Some highlights - Del’s raps are great- but Damon’s vocals are uninspiring and the project conceals into sameness after a while.

Thoughts before listening: Damon Albarn from Blur with a bunch of studio musicians, producers, and rappers hiding behind cartoon personas. I've never been super into the Gorillaz despite really enjoying some of their songs i.e. "Clint Eastwood". Review: This is okay. Eclectic sound bringing in a lot of different ideas and styles all with a hip hop beat. Most songs are definitely trip-hop inspired with monotone rapping mixed with Damon Albarn's britpop style, and like a lot of his projects (i.e. Blur and the Good the Bad and the Queen), I feel like there are more ideas than complete songs here. The only song that really grabs me remains "Clint Eastwood" although there are some others I am enjoying like "5/4". 3-stars.

This is a goofy-ass album. I kinda like it.

Easy listening for the new century. Are they still around?

There aren't any bad songs, but also nothing that sets itself apart. Just a steady album.

Not as good as I remember. In fact, I think I just heard the singles and not album tracks. The singes were great, the rest, not so much.

Most tracks very good beats! A couple not quote so engaging!

ci sono migliori album di gorillaz

Nice I love Clint Eastwood

5/4,Clint Eastwood ,Gravity,Rock the house carine Double bass, latin Simone e slow country spaccano Man research, sunshine e M1 A1 strane in culo Genere particolare

Hip hop songs are the best on the album. Way better than whatever the fuck the B52s were cooking up

Love Clint Eastwood and they have a few other good ones in this album

I get why this was genre-bending at its time of release. Unfortunately I listened to this fully in 2024 so while I enjoyed some songs, a lot of them are pretty forgettable. Favorite: Re-Hash + Left Hand Suzuki Method Least: Latin Simons

This was a lot harder to get through than I thought it would be. Its fun, but there was lots I hadn’t heard before and that was for good reason

Clint Eastwood is an excellent song. Latin Simone was so surprising, but lovely. Other than those two songs, I found all the other songs on this album just okay.

Always found this to be a bit overhyped, some good singles but that is pretty much it - 3.5

Never really got into these dudes

Good debut, with some of their best songs. But many of the songs still fall pretty flat for me.

I’ve liked a lot of Gorillaz’s songs in the past and was sure I was going to love it. Except for “Clint Eastwood” and a couple of other times this was mostly just fine. I don’t think I’d really ever re-listen to the full album again. 3/5

As for a debut album this on is pretty good. Clint Eastwood and 19-2000 are stand out tracks. The album though sounds a little disjointed, especially compared to their amazing sophomore album demon days.

I enjoyed these funky beats.

18 songs. 2 versions of Clint Eastwood. A Rock the house vid. This album is jam packed with content. Like the effort but not my style…

Cool Vibes.

Another album that I wanted like…..didn’t for the first few songs and then got into the groove. Not an album I loved, but more listenable than I expected and I will have to listen to more Gorillaz.

It was not the best version of Gorillaz. It was fine. It helped create a huge music genre.

Some pretty good,s ome pretty weird

I was hoping to like this more but I have always preferred Blur to Gorillaz. It’s still good but I don’t know why Albarn’s voice is so high-pitched in Gorillaz. It’s kind of irritating. I still like Clint Eastwood though.

Damon Albarn igen. Jag gillar det. Fina poplåtar 5/4, Tomorrow Comes Today och såklart Clint Eastwood. Gillar soundet och de tecknade figurerna. Kunde vara en 4a men blev några låtar för långt så en solid 3a. Get the cool shoeshine!!

Love Damon Albarn.

Man, og Gorillaz is SO good, in a way that the later stuff just doesn't match. There's still something a bit raw, almost punk like to electronic nature of this music that gets produced out in later work. Re-Hash, 5/4, Clint Eastwood, and New Genius immediately jump out as album highlights. I actually first listened to this through the early days of pirating and copying music, and there are a lot of tracks here I hadn't heard previously. I will say many of them are far more experimental than I'd anticipated, and Gorillaz newer work seems to have leaned more into this experimental style than the the punk electronic style it originated. But tbh I don't think this other stuff is nearly as good as what made them famous in the first place.

I want to like this more than I do because I like later albums by Gorillaz a lot. There are some good songs here, and some filler songs also. Favorite songs are Tomorrow Comes Today, Clint Eastwood, M1 A1, and 5/4.

“Clint Eastwood” is forever a highlight for me, and I appreciate the overall diversity and experimentation of it. I do find it overstays its welcome a bit, and a few songs drift into “vibe”-based anonymity, but it’s more than an easy enough listen. 3.5/5

Leave the filler out and this is actually a great album.

i had no idea monkeys could make such great music !

I zoned out in the middle, but some good ones. 3.4.

I like it.

I really liked this album when it came out in the 2000s. However, the hits are still great, the rest of the album is like some weird experiment. I don't know if that has something to do with the Gorillaz world that Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett created, and it's those soundscapes from that world, I don't know but some of it wasn't as neat as I remember.

I like Gorillaz but this album as a whole is actually kinda boring lol

Never been a big Gorillaz fan, and as the album neared it's conclusion I was pretty happy for it to end. That's not to say it was bad, it's just overly long and feels like it keeps the same pace for the whole runtime, which gets tiring. The songs with features are pretty good, the basslines and production overall is definitely a highlight, but would need serious trimming for me to want to revisit it.

I remember the \"big three\" Gorillaz songs when I was growing up. I loved all three and was hopeful that this album would contain more greatness like that. Listening to the whole thing is a bit long, but there are several great, feel-good tracks. This is a as good of stoner album as many and I caught myself several times zoning out to the music. A few times the vocals were annoying, but many times they were saved by great beats and sounds. Favorite tracks: Tomorrow Comes Today, New Genious (Brother), Clint Eastwood, Man Research (Clapper), Latin Simone, Starshine, M1 A1.

Not a huge fan of The Gorillaz, but I do like some of their stuff. I believe this is the first full album I've listened to by them, and it's not far off from what I expected. Definitely different, but in a good way. Clint Eastwood, Rock the House, Dracula, and Left Hand Suzuki Method were my favorites. Probably more I enjoy, but I'd need another listen. Outside of that though I don't see much replay value for me personally. I give it a solid 3/5, 6/10.

3.7 - Some fun dance bops on here featuring typical turn-on-the-millennium random sampledelia. Standouts: “Clint Eastwood”, “Rock the House.”

Das Album an sich ist nicht besonders spannend oder interessant. Als Hintergrundgeräusch auf einer Party nicht schlecht, aber zum aktiven Zuhören ein wenig langweilig.

pretty boring. halfway through i was thinking it was either 4/10 or 5/10 but the second half was a lot more enjoyable to me. idk if the songs improved or if i just got more in the mood for mediocre trip hop as the album went on. still nothing amazing but it bumped it to a low 6/10.

Like films featuring a trucker who moonlights as a fighter and has a pet orangutan named Clyde, they had me at Clint Eastwood.

This album feels like every single song is its own little album or project, it’s not the best thing in the world but it has some cool ideas and tracks 2.5/5

Not a huge fan of this style of music (5/4). Clint Eastwood is a great song though 19-2000 another classic

Gorillaz is a good, but flawed album. It is clear that Damon Albarn wanted to move in a different artistic direction than Blur, but this album didn't uncover a unique personality for Gorillaz. A number of songs were interesting and catchy, others were wallpaper. Clint Eastwood is great to this day. All in all, a good album. 3/5.

Good stuff, nice chilled but chunky listen.

This isn't as good as Plastic Beach or Demon Days but it's probably their 3rd best album? Just not as solid all-around but still pretty great

Some good jams. Never had listened to this before.

I enjoyed this number a good deal. Reminds me a bit of Radiohead in the experimental/gloomy aspect. Not quite as weird or dark as RH, but that's where my head is at. Double Bass was a standout for me. Couple of hits on here I recognized. The album is a bit all over the place. There's certainly a couple of 4 star songs on this album, but the album as a whole doesn't quite get there for me.

This was the very first album I ranked on this site! Brings a tear to my eye. I wrote 1 sentence for it before but I'll go a little bit more in depth here. This album has some serious jams in Tomorrow Comes Today (might be my favorite use of melodica ever), Clint Eastwood, Rock the House, and 19-2000, and M1 A1 is such a great closer. They started with M1A1 when I saw them gave me goosebumps here. Some of the other songs just do not do it for me. This album doesn't hold a candle to Plastic Beach or Demon Days, but I do love the eclecticness of the album. High af 3

Simply doesn't appeal to me. Undoubtly, there are a couple of really good ideas, which really make this album good to hear, but in sum it's not sufficiently good to go down in history. A little less mainstream, a little more daring, please.

I'm conflicted on this one. On one hand the music is generally solid and switches up styles to keep it interesting. You also have some real strong highs like Clint Eastwood and 19-2000. On the other hand I found the album to be longer than necessary and that stretches would fade to the background. This album is obviously important as there isn't much music like the Gorillaz before this. There are songs I will come back to but I don't see myself listening to the whole album anytime soon.

Despite some of the great songs on the album it just felt a little lacking on the other stuff.

never got the hype, still don't re-hash 5/4 clint eastwood sound check double bass left hand suzuki method

Just ok.

Gorillaz is a band I haven't listened to much, because it isn't quite my style. It's okay to my ears, the dissonances in some of the areas are kind of interesting. Suddenly Feel Good Inc. blew up and they were everywhere.

medium

It pains me to give this a middling rating, considering how much I love the second Gorillaz album, Demon Days—one of my all-time favorites. Unfortunately, Demon Days isn't on this list; instead, we have their first self-titled album, which, to be honest, is just okay. There are about four good songs (with "5/4" being my favorite), and the rest feels like a warm-up for the better things that would come later.

My first time hearing this as an album. Somehow this one slipped by, adjacent to much of what I listened to at the time. Clint Eastwood single was familiar but not the full album. So very stoner centric, but I'm digging the groove without any aids. Double base stood out to me. Great groove, grabbed and held my attention as they traded off focus between different instruments. If I find myself in altered states I hope I remember to put this document on again. Then I feel asleep about 2/3 through, so I guess it didn't grab me all that well. Need to go back and relisten to the end I guess...

Good happy lounge with annoying interludes in between. Some childhood hits though!!

Huge Damon Albarn fan and love almost everything he touches, but I would put all the Blur albums and the next Gorillaz album ahead of this one. Still love 19-2000 tho

First time listening to the whole album.

Fun as hell. Some tracks flop.

Gorillaz is an interesting phenomenon, and they have the hits to back up what they do. The problem is, that besides the hit on this album of Clint Eastwood, a LOT of this album felt like filler, or even veering into the demo territory. Very "hey, check out what WE can do". I like the stuff I hear of Gorillaz on the radio and such, but the album as a whole needed to be either punched up or edited down a LOT.

I don't own this album but I own their follow-up Demon Days, which I rushed out to buy after hearing its lead single Feel Good Inc. I remember being underwhelmed. This album is more of the same - outside of its lead single Clint Eastwood, it's kind of meh. I mean, it's a unique combination of rock and hip hop and electronica so kudos to Damon Albarn for pioneering something new. But it's kind of boring at times. For example, I really like the beats in M1 A1 but then the line Hello...Is anybody there? that is repeated for the first half of the song is grating. Re-Hash is similar except that the beats are annoying (especially the overlays) and the lyrics repeat throughout. I didn't find the other singles all that remarkable (Tomorrow Comes Today, Rock the House, 19-2000), which is maybe why they didn't make a dent in North America. 5/4, Punk, and maybe Double Bass or Starshine were the other songs I can specifically say I enjoyed. Yes, this was completely different than anything that had come before it, including the whole virtual band motif, but the music itself is just average.

There are a few great great tracks on here. Those are the ones you already know. Stick to those. I get the feeling that this is the album Damon Albarn always wanted to make as a bourgeois art school student back in the day. His fame and fortune allowed him the free reign to produce this. A few good bits, a lot of pretentious twaddle. Maybe that's harsh, it's obviously a lot better than I could do. Oh well, in a few years computers will design all of our music, custom made just for our personal preferences, so this will be a moot point anyway. We will only hear things we are guaranteed to enjoy, and we will all live in a state of somatic boredom, constantly entertained, never fulfilled. Lean into the twaddle, it may be doomed forever and we'll miss it when it's gone.

While a few songs are bangers I remembered that even back then I only listened to those. Whole album, nah.

I liked it some, kind of weird .... 3 stars

Standouts: Man Research (Clapper), Slow Country, Clint Eastwood

Best Song(s): Tomorrow Comes Today Clint Eastwood Sound Check (Gravity) Starshine Worst Song: Punk

Album Nr. 37 Ich habe mir mehr von dem Album erhofft. Es gibt den einen und den anderen guten Titel. Aber leider auch einige Titel, welche meinen Gesamteindruck nach unten ziehen.

Not bad. Interesting stage show when I saw them 20 years ago

Acceptable

An English virtual band exploring a variety of musical styles including hip hop, electronic and world music made up of NFT-looking anime human/ape hybrids? https://wifflegif.com/gifs/552151-mr-pink-fuck-all-that-reservoir-dogs-gif Some of this music was perfectly fine. I like Damon Albarn’s work. But knowing that I’m supposed to listen to this while watching cartoon monkeys really tanks the whole experience for me. I’ll stick to listening to Blur.

There are some good songs on here. I particularly like Starshine, and Clint Eastwood of course. Some of the others were a bit to avante guard for me.

Not my cuppa

Definitely feels like an album where Gorillaz are trying to find their sound, lots more rockier tracks, a few bangers but overall felt like a bit like Damon trying to shake off the Blur sound

"Gorillaz" by Gorillaz, released in 2001, marks the debut of the virtual band created by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett. This eclectic album combines elements of alternative rock, hip-hop, and electronic music, showcasing the duo's experimental approach to music-making. While tracks like "Clint Eastwood" and "Tomorrow Comes Today" demonstrate the band's innovative sound and catchy melodies, the album as a whole feels somewhat disjointed. The eclectic mix of genres and styles may not fully coalesce into a cohesive listening experience for some listeners. Despite its lack of cohesion, "Gorillaz" introduces listeners to the imaginative world of the virtual band and lays the groundwork for their future successes. Earning a middling 3/5, this album offers glimpses of brilliance but falls short of achieving its full potential.

This is pretty decent for a first album but they grew as a band a lot in later releases. Sound Check (Gravity) was one I liked and had never heard before. Double Bass too... Maybe I just like the second half of this album more. I've always felt I should give the Gorillaz more of a shot. I like what they are doing but have never found a love of them.

The biggest thing about the Gorillaz was the mystery of who they were. When it finally came out everyone was mildly shocked, then moved on. There's a few good tracks on here but I find a lot of them to be insipid and boring tbh.

I listened to demon days not this album, this one had a good mix of great and boring

Ah man, I was bored so much more than I was expecting to be.

Not sure if I just wasn’t in the mood. Clint Eastwood sounded better than I ever remembered it though.

This was fun and objectively good. I just found it quite disruptive to listen to, I'm not sure it's my cup of tea!

Gorillaz are a bit weird in the fact that the ones you think you know are probably remixes, and not the tracks on the album. I had forgotten this was a product of Dan the Automator who is majorly underrated as a producer. I found myself enjoying it more and more as the album went on. I still prefer Deltron 3030.

Wrote this review after listening whilst getting ready in the morning: Clint Eastwood might be one of the best individul songs so far. But that doesn't save the rest of the album, which could well be a collaboration between John Lydon and The Residents. Gave it another listen in the evening, this time whilst as a passenger in the car: It was like listening to a different album, much better than I first thought. Context definitely isn't for losers when judging these. It did start to drag on though. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I went in with high hopes, however its just a middle of the road album. Probably won't go back and listen, but wouldn't be against some one playing some of these tunes if we were hanging out

A lot of neat, funky-fresh vibes, mixed with a lot of repetitive lyrics and noise. I think the visual presentation of the music videos and accompanying art helps a lot of this move along. Not a bad album, but not one I'd really just sit and listen to for any sort of musical prowess. More instrumental stuff would also help, as the lyrics are more annoying and useless than anything. Fav tracks: Clint Eastwood, Double Bass, Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo)

Few bangers that are still great. Rest of the album wasn’t really my vibe

the primordial soup to what we know and love as The Gorillaz. you can hear the sketches of their later discography all through the album. The whole thing feels very experimental and lo-fidelity to an extent, not the genre.

I've heard the hits but never gave the album a shot. It's too long and tries to be too many things at once. Demon Days (the sophomore album) is what really defined them, so I'm excited for that one. DNF.

The album is overly long and overly experimental in places, and suffers for it by being inconsistent. It is well-mixed, some of it sounds very fresh, and Deltron has good features on it. Gorillaz will get better and more refined over time.

Some cool beats and good rhymes. Kind of drones at times

Not gorillaz best work, but a solid and ambitious debut project from Damon. 3 stars because he’s sexy

Cool! “Clint Eastwood” is still a great song!

Everyone talked about this album when it first came out, and I never really got the hype. Overly long electronica/trip-hop with mostly inane lyrics. Would they have been nearly as big if they hadn't done the mysterious avatar schtick? Good tracks: New Genius (Brother); 19-2000 (Soulchild Remix)—the remix is the vastly superior version; Double Bass; Rock the House—great throwback to old school rap; Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo) Incredibly annoying tracks: Man Research (Clapper); M1A1 The rest is ... fine to ok. Like with most of the British electronica albums on this list so far, there are way too many songs and it goes on forever. 3/5 — and 19-2000 (remix) is doing a lot of the work.

Knew far less tracks or the album than I thought I would

Was slightly disappointed by this album hearing so many good things about gorillas. Stil decent but had higher expectations. No stand out track but would be good background music.

This is very okay.

I remember loving this album a lot more when it came out. Maybe it was being 24 and wondering if I was going to be out of a job at any moment and feeling the angst and creativity in the songs and the Gorillaz concept. This just doesn’t hold for me 20-some years later.

Didn’t love this album when it came out. Don’t love it now but it’s solid.

nisam fan gorillaza :( al bilo je 3 dobre

Es bárbaro, punk, emo, todo, pero escucharlo hoy no es lo mismo que a los 15 años. Los quiero mucho pero ya está.

Not bad

More chillers than I remembered.

Pretty decently listenable to but only the already known hits stayed with me after the 1h mark.

Some bangers but some filler for sure. Big fan of Damon Albarn and you've got to respect him for branching out regularly even if it doesn't always hit the mark. 3.5.

Clint Eastwood will still get stuck in my head even now, and I enjoy 5/4, but the rest is not as good as I remember.

I had no idea, so good

This album was nice to work to and I do like the gorillas, it was fun listening to their earliest(?) album

Not bad but not my style

Hörbares Album. Die Auskopplung Clint Eastwood ist ok. Weiteres spektakuläre Songs oder Highlight waren Mangelware. Zu wenig Musik und zu viel Rap.

Overrated

Childhood classic but doesn’t rlly intrest me today

Original with a few great songs and a bunch of decent ones.

ok. some good tunes but not ground breaking

I remember this album coming out as a kid and thinking it was amazing. On re-listening as an adult I wasn’t as blown away however the remixes at the album saved it from a lower rating as they elevated the album for me.

When this came out, what I really wanted was a new Blur album. Re-listening, I realize it’s better than I remember.

Really surprising that this is the album that made it to the list and not Demon Days or Plastic Beach. It is an alright album with a few bangers in there. I forgot how many instrumental tracks Gorillaz used to do. It's not bad, but it is nowhere near their best work. Felling a strong 3 maybe a light 4 on a good day

A little too long and experimental for me. Good background music when doing something else.

Much better than I anticipated (and I may even own this album). I really don't like Clint Eastwood...super overrated imo, but the rest of the album "filler" was surprisingly engaging. 3/5

Some pretty good tracks but not particularly sold on the whole album. The best of the Gorillaz was yet to come.

Nice to listen to again, should listen through more to take me back

5/15, 33%

It's OK-not my favorite, but I do appreciate the unique sound they have.

I was really surprised by this album. i assumed it would not be something i would be in to. however, i ended up adding it to my library and will definitely be listening to it again. It is an album that i’m sure was very different in its time. I feel as though i could throw it on and listen easy or do something else while it plays and enjoy either way. Very cool beats through out.

It's ok

Gorillaz are one of the most overrated bands of the 21st century in my view. This album I think gets a lot of credit for concept over content. Most tracks feel like half-baked ideas, genre-mashes that don't cohere into compelling songs. It's long too. The best tracks are basically just Del the Funky Homosapien rapping over: 1. a preset keyboard riff on Clint Eastwood; 2. John Dankworth's Theme from Modesty Blaise on Rock the House. Upon reflection I feel quite generous giving it a 3. I also listened again to the 2 remixes of the singles, and they both are just better than the originals without changing too much, which I feel is vindication for my viewpoint that this album is a lot of half-baked ideas. Fave tracks: Tomorrow Comes Today, Clint Eastwood, Rock the House, Slow Country 2.7/5

I listened to the whole thing for the first time. I would say it was alllllllright. Like, fine. Okay. I really liked the couple of singles I mentioned and there were a couple of tunes in the middle I quite liked too but overall seemed like background / coffee shop music. It was tolerable but didn’t make me want to listen again apart from Clint Eastwood and the other one.

Great genre hopping debut from Gorillaz.

Came out in the sweet spot between me being old enough to buy CDs and moving onto mp3, I actually had a physical copy so it's some sweet nostalgia. I remember it being a big creative and quirky story at the time - the guy from Blur is now behind a cartoon virtual band! I think it's in this list because of the intrigue of taking the Sgt Pepper concept to a new level but it is still enjoyable. I think I prefer Demon Days and Plastic Beach for the actual music, where Gorillaz carved out more of a sound. I like this too though so will go down the middle

Nicely spaced out filler between the singles

sounds way more like blur than what i was expecting, specifically in the first half. overall pretty good but i feel like it’s not that special

This album was mid all the way through. While there were some standout tracks such as "Clint Eastwood" and "Rock the House" the rest of the songs feel like needless fluff. While this album allowed the Gorillaz to develop into superstars their later work, such as Demon Days, completely outclass this album. In short Gorillaz walked so Demon Days could run. 2.7/5

Gorillaz have a handful of amazing singles that fuse hip-hop, pop and alt-rock. The whole album is a mixed bag though. Everything sounds cool and it’s well-produced but there’s a high quotient of songs where you check to see how much time is left. Maybe I’m doing the music a disservice by listening closely. Some of these songs would make great mood music. But they’re not quite complete songs in a pop sense. But man the great songs are so much fun. “Clint Eastwood” is a classic. It’s got a unique sound and style. And the sample in the beat of “Rock the House” is so joyful. Del the Funky Homosapien is obviously a big part of what makes both songs great. Maybe this album needs more rap features? The chorus of “19-2000” is summer in a bottle. Irresistible. The highlights are fantastic and personal favorites. But there’s too much aimless experimentation on the rest of the album.

Modern classic. Gorillaz rule and this album is no exception. Just a fun, weird, and at times hard to describe mix of hip hop, and indie alt rock. "Clint Eastwood", "19-2000", "Rock the House" are all great tracks. I somehow find myself in the same rating predicament as yesterday's album; where there are a few standout tracks that are yelling to me to rate this album a 4, but the rest of the album doesn't do enough to maintain that 4. Gorillaz are known for their amazing timeless singles. Between me and my wife I've listened to their hits thousands of times and I am always happy to hear one of their songs come on out of the blue. But the rest of the album doesn't match the greatness of the big tracks. There's just too much of a gap. It's a 3!

I haven't listened to this one as much as Demon Days. The highlights are every track with Del.

-OH not only do i know this band, i have listened to them a lot -funny enough i haven’t listened to this album, so i’m excited -this feels so CHILL compared to the later gorillaz stuff i know -which makes sense because this is their early stuff -some of these songs sound and feel DULL -even clint eastwood although that is the best of them so far -like the funny sounds in double bass -also love that theres a spanish song on here -left hand suzuki method is really interesting -like specifically the background instrumentals -like the japanese is SO COOL! -overall is this their best album? no. would i listen to it again? probably no. was it bad? no! -therefore, another three star rating

Although I knew the hits, this is the first time I've listened to the LP beginning to end. Quite a variety of fun jams. And Latin Simone was unexpected and great.

Its okaaay

I’m happy feelin glad

Not quite as good as I remember, though there are some tunes in there

already loved clint eastwood and i thought the rest of the album would go harder but its kinda mid only a few other songs that stood out to me

Decent, nothing to write home about though

More instrumental than I expected. Funky electro harmonica sound is unique.

Gorillaz are a band I always meant to explore more beyond the hits, so I was glad to receive this one. However, I found myself disappointed in much larger portions of this album than I expected. Some parts I really vibe to quite a bit, but there's a pretty uncomfortable amount of time where it just feels like I'm listening to background beats rather than holistic music. I would say that I like the album overall, but it's certainly not what I was expecting.

Found it crazy that this album was so popular whilst being so inventive/genre bending. I even bought Clint Eastwood on CD - maybe my first CD single?? Maybe I have to give it a 3 because I really like the B-side, Dracula.

Gorillaz are an interesting fusion of genres. There are elements of pop, electro, latin, hip hop, and rock. They've got some good songs and they've got some real snoozers. I like most of their work but this isn't my favorite album. Clint Eastwood is good but the rest is pretty forgettable.

The seminal work by Gorillaz took me somewhat by suprise.in a lot of musical choices. Songs with pan flutes with wrapping over them and very modest melodic songs as well. Prior listens to Gorillaz was entirely singles and songs on FIFA games. Based on them I think the 2nd album would be better for me but I enjoyed this well enough. Might add this or some songs to my rotation.

I remember hearing "Clint Eastwood" on the radio and thinking at the time that the band would be a one-hit wonder. Adding rap to alternative, the little cartoon characters. It all just seemed so gimmicky. Gorillaz (aka, Damon Albarn from Blur) is pretty solid, though. Not my favorite band, but I often come back to Demon Days and Plastic Beach. This is my least favorite album of the three.

Holds up better than I expected. Enjoyed listening, good nostalgia factor.

3.5 - rock the house beste trur jeg

Surprisingly decent

This is definitely kooky and ground breaking and fun. Thing is, most of it isn't my kind of music.

some legendary beats with a surprising amount of duds. a bit disappointed with this one. first tracks are unusually weak IMO

makes me feel cool when walking down the sidewalk lazy singing isn't necessarily bad but I'm not in love with it rn

Interesting album with a few good tracks, but not up there with the best of its era.

I do love me some Gorillaz but man this album feels like a debut. It does have a slight charm, but I think the immaturity doesn't really fit the album too well. I do love 5/4, Clint Eastwood, and 19-2000. Most of the other songs just feel kinda bland; like they just simply exist.

In my youth I was tormented by the omnipresence of the song Clint Eastwood. The video was a big misleading as well. Now, listening to the whole album, I discovered a lot more. It is a decent listen but the 2nd half feels rather dull. Ironically enough, it's also the part with more and more dub elements which is a genre of the reputation to be a bit meandering.

Almost TOO chill?

It’s fine. Kinda dated.

Some interesting stuff

Welp, it took me 22 years to realize that the guy from Gorillaz is the same gut from Blur. Mind you, this 1001 project helped better introduce me to Blur. Anyways, this album has some peaks and valleys. I like the more vibing hip hop over some of the looping experimental stuff. But Gorillaz has this unique cool factor about them.

Nice start into the 1001 album tour! Very experimental but also very boring like an endless loop

75/100

Finally something to listen to. To be honest when the a gorillaz song is good it’s real go but when it’s mid it’s real mid and this is their first album and you can kind of feel them goes thought so growing pains but it’s still pretty good, 3rd best out of everything they made Best: Clint Eastwood Worst: Clint Eastwood (with Ed case) (3.5/5)

Initial Thoughts: Oh. This is probably gonna be the group's highest rated album. Gonna be honest ya'll, looking at the track list I've only listened to Clint Eastwood. So I'm about to see what the hype is all about. Final Thoughts: Uh... Definitely not what I expected. It was good, but you can definitely tell this was like the beginning of Damon experimenting with Gorillaz. It really felt like he was still being too safe and it isn't the Gorillaz for who we know. This album does have a few bangers, but all in all an okay album. 3.5.

There is something about the whimsy of this album that’s so appealing—the collage of styles, at times humorous, at times dark, at times poppy, at times heavy. Compressed drums loops, dirty guitar strings, dub basses. Yet, when I compare it to Demon Days, this album feels like it contains less songwriting—more like “idea-splattering.” Nonetheless, it is certainly fun and listenable, but feels more like a premonition of what was to come than anything.

After the album, Spotify played: The Cure - Boys Don't Cry MF Doom - Rap Snitch Knishes White Stripes- Fell in Love with a Girl The Smiths - This Charming Man The Strokes - Someday

Creative and interesting. I didn't love every song. Lots of cool sounds

A bit meh, other than the single (Clint Eastwood), very little is memorable

A great album but less engaging than I remembered. It’s likely that I was excited by the concept at the time. Clint Eastwood is a stupidly good song. Like, so frickin good. Otherwise it was all ok.

I am not that big of a Gorillaz fan. My favorite thing about them is they remind me of my brother!

Not really my thing but it had some good bits. I like Blur but sometimes this can leave me a little cold

Couple of gems but most of it is just Blur over a hiphop beat.

It's ok

I will always like the Gorillaz, but this album does not contain my favourite songs

Defintely among my favourite bands. This album has some great songs but also a lot of dull moments.

Wasn't as good as I remembered but still worth a listen.

I heard this album years ago, but I didn't know it _that_ well. On the whole it feels more like a bunch of songs than an album -- they don't all have a consistent sound. For example, "Punk", while being pretty catchy, sounds nothing like the rest of the album. The songs with Del are probably the best. I also really like Gravity. But I don't think I'll be returning to this album much.

Shockingly dated with a couple of gems - 'Rock the House' in particular is still good.

Clint Eastwood is a banger.. the rest don't quite live up to that standard.

it was ok. clint eastwood is a fun song from back in the day
