Reviews (page 11 of 14)
High highs, low lows.
Pretty good overall, nothing standout. Great concept. 6/10
Not the best, but still inventive and above all the first one
self-titled is probably their second best work behind demon days
Funky album. Good stuff
A good album when you're feeling like zoning out. The bass and certain drum breaks really stand out, making every trip hop song in this album "heavier" in a good way, however, it's not something I would listen to everyday. Tracks i'd keep in my playlist: 1-3-5-8-9-10-11-12-14
On hyväksyttävä albumi.. eklektistä..
3,5
I am a huge Gorillaz fan, but this is not their best album and I suppose it's on the list because of songs like "Clint Eastwood" which became a classic. I've always found this album lacking cohesion and too long. That said, some of the songs that tend to get stuck in my head would probably be the first to be cut if this was a tighter album, like "Double Bass" "M1 A1" "Sound Check" and "Left Hand Suzuki Method" (which must be only on the US release?). The album starts super strong with "Re-Hash" "5/4" and "Tomorrow Comes Today" but just doesn't keep up the momentum throughout. A good collection of songs, and a significant band, but not a great front-to-back album.
Certainly is a cartoonish postmodern hodgepodge. Never really got the "virtual band" thing - found it kind of gimmicky - but there are some cool tunes buried within the excessive CD era runtime.
Hard to rate. Enjoyment overall is a 3 but some songs are bangers for sure, this was huuuge (as well as the next album in their roster). The album as a whole is not cohesive though, but it's pretty close to a 4. The edgy kids loved Gorillaz. I wasn't cool enough.
It's good music and makes me quite nostalgic for the 2000s, but I wouldn't purposely listen to it.
I've heard of Gorillaz, but didn't know any of their songs. It was OK. Maybe back then it was revolutionary? Some of the songs can be quite repetitive and sound synthetic.
debyytti albuimi.. joku ihme juttu että näihin aikoihin pitää tuntiin asti venyttää homma. milleniaali nuorisomusiikkia.. laiska laulanta on hyvää silloin kun on paska laulamaan mutta yrittää oikeasti mutta ei pysty (bob)... tai sitten ujostuttaa, ujo poika ei uskalla kunnolla (mark).. ei mitään että kannabis kanabiksen käyttö... weed man... 2000 early year weed bro... college.... hyviä biisejäkin löytyy. ota kolme tähteä ja painu vittuun mun naaman edestä häväistys double bass
It was pretty good. Clint Eastwood is my favourite track.
Honestly quite good. Way too long and a little boring, but generally enjoyable. Never gonna listen to it again tho. solid 6/10
I like this album, but its inclusion on this list is a bit of a mystery to me. It’s not even the second best Gorillaz album.
I think this band is a little overrated. There is a lot of cleverness but then given the artists involved that's no surprise, but it's kind of a shallow dish.
Good, not great. Gorillaz has better work. I guess this is on the list because it was their first album? Also, as is often the case, it looks like there's British bias (it was big in England, so it should be on the list!)
3 stars for Clint Eastwood, I never listened to their non-singles and I don't think I was missing much
3.5/.5. This was good, although not quite my style. I have not really listened to Gorillaz at all, so this was a good introduction.
Remember this being released. Very experimental sounds and there are pockets of brilliance on here. I just love the shoe-gazing melancholic lazy grooves and so many interesting sound loops. Stand out tracks for me are ‘Tomorrow Comes Today’, ‘Slow Country’ and ‘19-2000’ Sadly, Damon Albarn has spoilt quite a few of the tracks with some really strange vocal weirdness, and there are too many fillers to stop me scoring higher than a 3. The second album ‘Demon Days’ built on this sound and delivered so much more.
A messy album. Feels like Damon trying to show he can do, or likes, lots of different styles. So there's the punk one, called, er, Punk. This was pleasant enough and some of the beats were fun but it didn't flow as an album and I didn't really get anything from any of the lyrics. Too abstract for me. And the 'refix' of Clint Eastwood - which I don't think was on the original album - is by far the most focused and interesting track here.
I can't listen to this without being reminded of early 2000 bars in Clapham that cornered the market for the boozer / club crossover. I was resentful at the time for Damon dissing his indie roots and going for the dance market. I was probably resentful at my own personal transition at the time. Almost a quarter of a Century (!) later and I now get it. Club culture over indie shite any day. This is dark, yet it leaves you with pockets of optimism in which to escape. It all comes back to the tune, something which Damon has always had. Wankerville is still Wankerville, mind.
It's got some really cool sounds, it's super fresh and unique, Del is the man. Is it mind blowing or anything to listen to now? Mmmm not really, just good. Such a milestone though.
Ei ehkä ihan niin hyvä kuin odotin. Vähän sieluttomia osa kappaleista. Ihan hyvää taustamusiikkia kuitenkin ja Clint Eastwood tietenkin kovin
Solid. Workout.
It's hard to pinpoint the sound of the band; it just sounds like generic 2000s stuff. It doesn't help that the genres of the songs switch completely from alternative to a mix of pop and hip-hop. I guess the virtual band aspect was innovative at the time, but it does not make the music itself any different. Also, the lyrics are weird; I don't understand what any of the songs are about.
I didn’t like this when it first came out. I haven’t tried listening to the whole album in probably close to 20 years so I’m interested to see how I like it now… Post-listening: still not my jam.
moyen
It was cool.
Eh
Some of this gets on my tiddies, but other bits a very good.
It's interesting enough. I never really got into this the first time around, but it's fine.
I enjoyed some of the sounds, and I feel this album kind of designated their signature sound, which I happen to enjoy. Very trial and error, but the next couple of albums make this one pay off. Good, but not great. Great starting spot for them.
Clint Eastwood.
Erg leuk, maar kabbelde een beetje weetje
2.5
Runs out of ideas fairly quickly but there's some good tracks here.
Would've been more if it was plastic beach love that album!
Light 7
You know what? Was not into it this time I listened to it! Most of it just seemed aimless except for a couple tracks (Clint Eastwood, 19-2000). I’m also very surprised to see that Demon Days is not on this list. I feel like that album was more popular at the time. Plus in the last couple of years everyone has rightfully evevated it to masterpiece status.
entertaining mix of rock, rap, and pop over various music samples. was only familiar with “clint eastwood” before this listen. liked it more than i thought i would. highlights: “clint eastwood”, “punk”, “19-2000”.
It’s Gorillaz
7/10
Not bad. Vibe for like a road trip. My favorite song on it was New Genius (Brother). I probably wouldn’t listen to it from start to end again.
Hmmm. I was excited to listen to this. I love Feel Good Inc. and Dare from Demon Days but maybe the fact that I never listened to that album more than once should've been a clue as to how I'd feel about this. With a lot of these songs, I felt like the musicians just weren't that interested in making music, which makes sense to me after reading about its inspiration being the soullessness of pop music. A lot of this did feel soulless. Which is an interesting thing to try, I guess? But it obviously makes it hard to connect with.
Clint Eastwood saves this from being a mediocre concept. Unique songs with no flair. Forgettable.
- I generally don’t enjoy Gorillaz and that holds true for this album - Clint Eastwood is SUCH A BANGER tho - a few groovy tunes
3.5
There were a lot of cool ideas and production effects going on throughout this one but they all seemed very rough which makes sense cuz it’s his first attempt at writing songs in these styles. Giving it a 3 for that cuz I didn’t really love the album but I appreciate him trying to push the boundaries on the debut album. Hopefully any more gorillaz we get will be a little more cohesive with better songwriting. 👍: tomorrow comes today, 5/4
Great album by Gorillaz, especially liked to see the correlations with Plastic Beach
Has the feel of a lark ... and, however fun and clever, larks shouldn't go on this long. There are cool grooves and beats and hooks, but somehow nets out as slightly less than the sum of its parts. Doesn't improve on multiple listens and has the same problem as much of Blur, way too convinced of its own cleverness, despite being, in fact, quite clever indeed. The beats are cool, the spooky edge and shadowy atmospherics add a bit, too, and the versatility is both feature (fun) and bug (all over the bloody place, which adds to the not-to-be-taken-too-seriously effect).
Decent record.
Never really been a fan of Gorillaz, they're just kinda boring and a bit annoying. This album is fine - I don't really want to listen to it again, but I wouldn't be upset if someone put this on.
Cpl bangers on this one
3.5
Too long. A few great sings
Back when Gorillaz was fun and fresh, as patchy and a little uneven this debut album is sometimes. Damon Albarn, here helped by Dan The Automator, sure had a great "concept" with this idea of a virtual band. And some of the tracks slap, "Clint Eastwood" being for instance an all-time great. The thing is, other cuts on this record sound a little too gimmicky, and some of the electronic elements or rappings displayed haven't aged that well. Tempted to include the album nonetheless, since it documents the zeigeist of the early naughts in ways most other LPs then released don't. Maybe the naughts don't deserve to be so well documented anyway. You tell me... It was a time when music went through such a constant "Re-hash" (wink-wink) that you sometimes had the feeling the best of it was behind. Fortunately, it wasn't, because things then got better--listen to a lot of the great albums released these days... But that's a story for another time, kiddies. Maybe I'll draw a cartoon to tell it as well, one of these days... 3.5/5 for the purposes of this list (which means 8.5 for more general purposes: 5 + 3.5) Number of albums left to review or just listen to: a little less than 600, I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: approximately a half so far Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter (including this one) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter
Re-Hash - Fun, repetitive but not to the point of annoyance. 5/4 - Wacky, I like the hook and record scratches Tomorrow Comes Today - Melancholic and mellow, childhood favorite, I love it a lot. New Genius (Brother) - Great vibes, harmonica and background vocals add quite a bit. Clint Eastwood - Simple but effective, humorously deadpan vocals from 2D & fun rap vocals from Del. Man Research (Clapper) - Meh. Punk - Decent punk track. Sound Check (Gravity) - I like the bass and kicks. Double Bass - Goofy synths and organ, like it. Rock the House - Great flow from Del and the hilarious recorder melodies. Love it. 19-2000 - Lovely track. appropriately tacky with summer vibes. Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo) - Definitely stands out, pretty good trumpet and harmonica melodies. Starshine - Lonely-and spacious crispy track. Like it a lot. Slow Country - Chiptune sounds good, the sound is larger than on most tracks. Enjoyable M1 A1 - Good garage-y & explosive finisher. Nice buildup too. Overall a good album, has some classics, but also a few mediocre cuts.
Eigenlijk is Gorillaz altijd volledig buiten m’n blikveld gebleven??
Good stuff. Not amazing. Just enjoyable.
Clint eastwood ig
This album just sort of runs out of steam. As I jog my memory listening to snippets of the various tracks, a lot of them really are quite decent, and a few really good ones like Re-Hash and Clint Eastwood. Through the second half of the album the density of weaker tracks just gets high enough to lose my attention. From the boring Slow Country and Starshine to the straight up irritating 19-2000. I want to make special mention of the song 5/4, which is a pretty good attempt at writing in the awkward time signature, but loses points for the lazy and self-congratulatory title. I was initially leaning towards a 2 on this one based on my impression from full album listens, but listening to individual tracks reveals some more quality here than that impression. This album is less than the sum of its parts.
I liked this album. If you factor in the virtual band concept I would give the album 4 stars, because I think that’s a big part of what makes the Gorillaz cool.
Interesting..
Good, unique mix of lofi, rap, and rock. Definitely good music to put on on a rainy day and just have playing in the background. I enjoyed the songs with lyrics best, namely Rock the House (with the Herb Alpert-esque brass), Clint Eastwood, and Tomorrow Comes Today. Nothing super profound jumped out at me, but definitely a good debut.
Pretty good. Clint Eastwood was the best.
Some good songs but like half of it could have been cut at least and it would have made for a better project. That's how I feel about Gorillaz in general, too much dicking around with some real songs thrown in every once in a while.
Nothing other than "Clint Eastwood" really stuck out but it was a pleasant listen - fun and experimental but without losing its musicality
Clint Eastwood is great but the rest of this album doesn't live up to what I enjoy about Gorillaz.
My Gorillaz experience growing up was Feel Good Inc and Clint Eastwood. The rest of the album was fine enough to listen to but there’s probably a reason nothing else they did was a commercial success.
Interesting sound. Songs flow together well. Album is OK.
Doesn’t hold up as well as their later albums but good nonetheless.
Great album but not as great as I remembered.
3.5 very good.
Was ok, seemed like slightly more upbeat lift music to me
Diverse music with a chill vibe. Maybe tries a little overly to be clever. I imagine I'm in the minority here, but I've decided that Gorillaz only interests me in limited doses. Fave Songs: Tomorrow Comes Today, Double Bass, 5/4, New Genious (Brother), Clint Eastwood, Starshine
Clint Eastwood is great, but I couldn’t get into the rest.
Album started slow, but has some catchy tunes. It's got quite a variety. While I don't love it it's interesting, some of the songs I'll add to a regular playlist I keep.
6/10. It was interesting, but not really my taste for the most part. There was a lot of variety on the album. Best songs were Clint Eastwood and Rock the House
Love the trip-hoppiness(?) to it
A long album. I understand that people find this album unique, cause so do I. I can appreciate the music, however it’s not my taste. I might listen to it again.
Another real hit and miss album, when Gorillzaz are good they are great but there's a lot of filler in here. Still enjoyed it overall, more like a 3.5.
Big meh..... Never really been into Gorrilaz. Obviously know the hits, but nothing else here really did anything for me. Wasn't bad, just not very interesting at all, which is perhaps the worst thing you can say about an album Del the funky homosapien has a good rap voice. M1-A1 was probably the best track
Good 3.5
Big bass
I like it I don’t love it but I like it
Aside from a couple hits, I didn’t love this album. Surprised me considering bc Demon Days is one of my all time faves. I think I like the more hip hop influences gorillaz that came later 3/5
Some good songs, but a lot of forgettable tracks as well. I’m glad they leaned into the hip hop sound on the followup album.
Tomorrow Comes Today is a great Track. Del ABSOLUTELY SOARS on Clint Eastwood. Man Research makes me feel violent (SKIP!). Del rules some more on Rock the House. LEft Hand Suzuki Method was a hard pass.
The first half of the album is solid, I always get lost in the 2nd half. Could have cut about 6 tracks and had a more coherent album (1 hour later) This album is too damn long.
A mix bag but legendary Dirty Harry
Looking forward to this. Sadly, I am now somewhat looking forward to the end. When I first properly listened to demon days I loved it. Not sure if this is because I knew 2-3, so the others were interesting change ups. But for whatever reason, this didn't hit as hard, still a different sound, but just didn't sound as good. A solid 6 as its still a very unique diverse album, just not high enjoyment
that was good, something new for me
Its OK but there are better things in their discography
It was fun and decent.
This is okay. Overall, I like Gorillaz. The ones I like on this album I've worn out from years of abuse. The ones I don't like aren't my faves.
I feel like an underaged teen with an intense desire to buy cigarettes ... "you had me at 'cartoons'" Cigarettes taste like shit, make your teeth yellow and breath stink. But Joe Camel was a super cool dude. What I'm getting at here is this album isn't as good as its branding and I'm disappointed. But I have a question... If I buy all the albums and turn in Gorillaz Cash, can I get a cheap tote with an oversized logo?
Rob bought this album when it came out and it always makes me think of that summer. I think we almost broke up. 🤣
I’m into some lofi and trip hop music, but this offering felt too sparse to me too often. Clint Eastwood is great and I liked the last couple songs better than the rest.
I wanted to love this but the first few tracks were really grating to me. It picked up after a while and it was fun to listen to the album hits again. Ultimately I’d enjoy this as a one-off listen and would jam to Clint Eastwood if I heard it out and about, but it’s not something I’d return to.
I always thought I wasn't really into Gorillaz and I was right. Best song: rock the house
I want to rate this albums 4 or a 5 because some of these songs are pretty amazing but the fact that some of this album is just annoying beats that get on your nerves for half of it just kinda ruins it and keeps it from being a great album.
This doesn't quite hold up to my memory of it, but it's still a lot of fun. Best track: Clint Eastwood
OK if you like that kind of thing, but I didn't find much original about it. Inoffensive.
Destaques: Tomorrow Comes Today; Clint Eastwood; Rock the House; Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo); Starshine.
Hadn't listened to much of this before... man research is something else. I think I might like Latin Simone the most. Weird.
Really a unique sound and vibe. I think it is pretty easy to enjoy for its eclectic groove. Though there are some experimental songs on the back half, the first 6 songs were pretty strong, with Clint Eastwood being very catchy. I did also like 19-2000... overall it was very interesting, but not something that i would go back to.
Not as good as I remembered it being back when it came out. A couple of great songs in there, a bit mad, felt very out there for 11 year old me but in retrospect it probably wasn't as weird as all that. A lot of filler in there too. Hopefully we get the next couple of Gorillaz albums in here too, they're definitely better than this (but maybe a bit less significant?) 3/5.
There were a few classics and new tracks that I really enjoyed.
More eclectic than I would have anticipated! Remembered the couple of radio hits, but the rest were lots of experimental and varied sounding electronic tracks. Still, kind of dull and not really something I'd put on again
Came in with Overwhelming expectations and have come away pretty whelmed, I have never listened to one of their albums and can see that other than the two hits and a couple of other songs that engaged my interest the rest wasn't to my taste. Other than the hits my favourite tracks were New Genius and Latin Simone.
Has it’s moments & the best couple are great - Clint Eastwood, which was the only track I was familiar with, and Rock The House. Makes sense, because I’m a fan of Del & he embellishes both tracks, which I was not aware of. Found the first half a bit ho-hum, but the backend is a lot more interesting. , although I don’t like what they do to Roadrunner - can’t see the point. Glad I finally heard it, though.
I never really liked Damon Albarn much, a few notable singles excepted. I find this piece of high concept nonsense not nearly as interesting as it reckons it is. Dan the Automator's production lends this album some interest. and Del the Funkee Homosapien is worth a listen when he appears, but this is primarily the Damon Albarn show. His unfocussed warbling just never really builds enough energy to light me up, and usually sounds out of place with the backing tracks. It just strikes me as over-hyped demos. I don't even like 'Clint Eastwood' that much. 19-2000 is OK (and the Soulchild remix even better), and I liked Double Bass (perhaps not surprisingly, an instrumental). My kids all seem to like Gorrillaz, though. I suspect that they encountered songs on video game soundtracks when they were kids, which is probably the appropriate age and context in which to experience Gorillaz.
I didn’t like it at all, it was just senseless cafe music honestly.
I found it a little boring at times and lost my bearings every now and then. There were too many instrumentals.which didn't seem to add anything for me. This was the first time listening to this album and having only known their bangers. I thought the rest would be similar, but it completely threw me off a little. I still enjoyed certain songs and got down to it but it's not something I would go out of my way to listen to again. My favourite songs were the ones that had lyrics and some flow.
Gorillaz are an English "virtual band" that blends rock, hip hop, and electronica together to make a unique mashup of sound. It was created by Damon Albarn (singer of the band Blur) and comic book creator Jamie Hewlett. The band has their own "lore" which includes their own universe, back stories etc. The "virtual band" consists of singer/keyboardist, 2-D (singing voiced by Damon Albarn), bass guitarist, Murdoc (voiced by Phil Cornwell), guitar/keyboard/vocalist, Noodle (singing voiced by Miho Hatori), and drummer Russel (voiced by Remi Kabaka Jr.). Gorillaz have collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Elton John, Jean-Michel Jarre, and more. I can distinctly remember when the music video for Clint Eastwood hit Much Music. I was a young teenager at the time, and the music was like nothing I'd ever heard before. Aside from their hits, though, I've never delved into their stuff too much before. I enjoyed relistening to some old hits I had forgotten about, and Clint Eastwood is an "earworm" that I'm sure to be humming for the next bit for sure. Every time I hear that song now, I immediately think of the movie Trolls. Aside from the hits though, most everything else on this album kind of fell flat with me. It is super quirky, as is most things Damon Albarn is involved with, with mostly nonsensical lyrics, and usually is heavy to the electronica side of things. The heavier rock/hip hop songs resonated more with me than the Primal Scream-esque electronic stuff. All things considered, there were about an even number of hits and misses on this album. I may revisit the hits, but can't see myself listening to the whole record cover to cover again. Favourite songs: Clint Eastwood, 19-2000, Rock the House, Punk, Double Bass, Re-Hash Least favourite songs: Man Research (Clapper), New Genius (Brother), Sound Check (Gravity), Starshine, M1 A1 3/5
Actually way better than I imagined, but probably the only Gorillaz album I could get into
it's so, so wild to listen to this band in its early stages, compared to its fleshed-out form that we know it today. this was merely the execution of an early idea. there are some songs on here that are just blur songs. albarn very clearly has multiple different "modes" in his head when writing for blur, gorillaz, and in his ambient solo career. songs like 5/4 are blur mode, on a gorillaz record. songs like the culturally universal clint eastwood and tomorrow comes today are the early stages of the gorillaz mode that we know now. there's a lot of really great, lowkey tracks on this one. it's not gorillaz's best, but it is a really strong debut effort for a really cool and interesting experiment that's still running to this day.
Not my fave gorrillaz fan but still like it a bunch
Yeah it's Gorillaz innit. Not my fave album they've ever done though. Some of it kind of grated on me, lots of it was a bop. Deserves to be in the 1001 but I probably wouldn't listen to it more than once a year.
Re-Hash - 5 stars 5/4 - 4 stars Tomorrow Comes Today - 5 stars New Genius (Brother) - 4 stars Clint Eastwood - 5 stars Man Research (Clapper) - 2 stars Punk - 2 stars Sound Check (Gravity) - 3 stars Double Bass - 3 stars Rock the House - 2.5 stars 19-2000 - 2.5 stars Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo) - 3.5 stars Starshine - 3 stars Slow Country - 4.5 stars M1 A1 - 2 stars Clint Eastwood refix - 1 star 19-2000 remix - 2 stars
good but not bad, not sure i would listen to much
Pop hip hop. Curioso. Interesante.
it was a different sound for me. not sure if I will listen to it again, but it was okay record
overrated but has a couple classics
The bangers are there, but there's a lot of chaff to be cut away to get to them.
Thought it was okay, with some classics mixed in. Very troubled listening to it though and I want to explain why below. I have this weird deep rooted association with Damon Albarn (maybe just his voice? I dunno) and 1) Brexit gammons or 2) Uni students from places like Bournemouth who bounce into lectures wearing absolutely battered webs that smell like damp. On freshers week they go “lads lads lads” and drink shit beer and still wear those same smelly webs. No matter the weather. I don’t know what it is - maybe it’s the amount of proper British style adverts some Blur songs have been used on during my childhood or something, but the association is there and I can’t do anything about it. I realise this is a massively unfair way to judge an album/artist and he’s no doubt very talented so I’ve gone with a 3 I’m so FUCKING WOKE AND CAN DO WHAT I WANT. (Disclaimer that I still think Dare and Stylo are top, top tier despite what I’ve just said above.) All said and done - 3 stars. We move on. Let’s not dwell.
I listen to this album a lot when it came out. I think I liked it better then. There’s a lot of noodling going on and at times it does wear on and on. I think I actually went to see them in concert at the time but not a lot of that is memorable. I like ’em enough but I don’t really feel I want to put the album on again for awhile.
Shagged the night away to this one. Oh boy. So much cum. A major vaginal discharge. All of the above is false.
Half of this sounds like late era-Blur cast offs and half sounds like it is produced by Dan The Automator...funny that.
I thought this wa svery good, but a bit too long for my taste. The last 2 remixes are completely useless and they drag the album down a little. But yeah, their sound was really interesting and somewhat innovative when that first album came out. They would do even better with the following one, Demon Days.
I'm not a big fan of what they do, but it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. Also, it's too long.
A few classic songs but I can't get behind the majority.
2, 3 Klassiker. Stoner Musik, ist ok
Classic
Feelin' fine
A friend recently called us, saying they have two tickets to Gorillaz that they can't use. It was only then that I realized I only liked one Gorillaz song. The rest of it is good design. I owned this one, always tuned out after Clint Eastwood. Sounds great, but there's nothing for me after that.
I hope this isn't the only gorillaz album here demon days should be here too at least not as good as their other work
Very fun listen. Soundtrack of my childhood.
Brought back memories of trying to download this on Napster over dial up... ‘Clint Eastwood’ is still a standout banger. Still get a kick out of the whole ‘art project’ vibe they started here: the animated personas, the episodic nature of the music videos, cut & paste of samples and beats.
Sounds like Gorillaz
Great songs but not their best.
Blah, very redundant couple good songs last song the instrumental was enjoyable but not a very interesting album as a whole
Love Gorillaz, but this album doesn't feel very cohesive. Some nice tracks, but a lot of filler.
They’re pretty good

Learning new things everyday with this experiment. I had never listened to blur before the 1001 album exploration, and while familiar with Gorillaz (my kids dig 'em), I had zero idea that Albarn was the creative force behind the band. So yeah, I dug this album, though I wasn't really able to home in on the details (we all listened to it in the car on the way to Dayton this weekend). I'm going to investigate the band further for sure, I think the concept of a virtual band itself is such a funky idea, and I liked what I heard, though I did feel like it played on longer than necessary.
I think I'm just one of those people that just doesn't GET Gorillaz.
What a disappointment. Not nearly as good as I remembered, I loved this but it just doesn't seem to have aged well for me at least
I didn't enjoy it as much as I did back in the day. The hits are still great, but the in-between tracks feel a tad tenuous.
Ups and downs in this album. Some timeless bangers, but also many mehs. Not my favorite genre, so I'm a little bias.
This is a great album. I thought going into it I'd give it a solid 4/5 but after listening and really thinking about it I think a 3 is fair. These some great classic tracks on this that bring back a lot memories. But also a lot of "eh skippable" tracks. Demon Days is a 5/5 for me but the self titled album hasn't aged as good.
I liked this album, there were a few cuts I was unfamiliar with that I really enjoyed and will go back to. With that said, there was a lot of tracks I didn't like all that much that I felt dragged the project down. I'm thinking a strong 6/10.
Weirder than I thought but still fun
I'm kind of mixed with my opinion. It has it's moments with cool vibes and an upbeat jam, with several good head-bobbing songs. Too inconsistent to really appreciate and really there's a lot more satisfying music out there. It's okay...but
tuttuja biisejä Flow-keikalta! toimii työn taustamusiikkina. huono puoli: jää taustamusiikiksi. mutta nyökäytyttää koko ajan
Cool album. It's a vibe.
Neat album, definitely some creative stuff. Clint Eastwood is a great song and a classic from this era. Nothing on the album stood out to me as much as that one but it's got some cool stuff.
It seemed like this was a bigger deal when it came out. Listening to it now, it doesn't seem all that remarkable
some bangers, overall ok
Re-Hash, Tomorrow Comes Today, Clint Eastwood(E), Punk, 19-2000, Latin Simone, Dracula, Left Hand Suzuki Method, Rock the House
Nothing stood out besides radio songs
A great singles band, terrible albums band. (Based on only having listened to a couple of their albums in full. But certainly this one has plenty of filler.)
Pretty good
Actually liked this a lot more than I was expecting, it was fun and had a couple really good songs on it. That being said, I didn't think it was anything special and unless I’m missing something it doesn’t belong in the same conversation as the last few we heard so I’m a little confused with it’s place on this list. Enjoyed listening tho so I’m not gonna give it a bad rating.
Clint Eastwood slaps Punk felt like it could’ve been pulled from the 70s punk era (I’m sure that was the point) but well done Double bass is a sick (almost fully) instrumental Feel like they cover a lot of genres which is cool The idea of a “virtual band” (which I just learned about) is cool but I feel like 20 years later still hasn’t really taken off which lessens the power of how groundbreaking/influential this really is, enjoyed this more than expected so gonna give this a low 3
Decent but overlong and sorta boring. 2.75/5
Eclectic but messy. Some bangers for sure, but Demon Days is where Gorillaz really started to shine consistently for me.
Aikoinaan en voinut sietää näiden musaa, mutta nykyään jo osittain jalka tamppaa mukana. Ei ihan paskaa muttei päädy ainakaan hetkeen uudelleen soittoon.
Vekkuli levy ja muistoja heräsi kuunnellessa. Ei kuitenkaan mikään masterpiece, mut toimii
I like Clint Eastwood. Songs sound pretty different.
Kind of waiting for something to get interesting, it's kind of-- oh, Clint Eastwood. I like this song. Overall fairly chill. Good tunes.
Pretty good for being different musically but the lyrics make no sense. Seems to glorify death and suicide. The hit song is still annoying. The rest is ok.
Lstening to plastic beach and demon days before bumps this way down for me. Really hard to decide between a 3 and a 4. Fav track: Clint eastwood/Tomorrow comes today Least fav: Man research (Clapper)/19-2000
3 1/2
like
Some great well known songs in this album.
Liked Clint Eastwood the most Mellower than I anticipated, lots of vibes within the album and within individual songs
Tracks: Tomorrow comes today Clint Eastwood 19-2000 Seems like a slow burner, the chill vibes flow through but some of the grooves definitely haven’t aged well, like an early 2000s time capsule. Love the fusion of many different styles, just doesn’t grab my attention with any songs except the bops. Could grow with more listens though!
Inexplicably I have always liked Gorillaz and yet I can’t explain why. I enjoyed the album. A couple of the tracks were really good, some just enjoyable so I’m in a scoring dilemma.......
Boring, but I can recognize that it's good musicianship
Best Song: Clint Eastwood. The woozy, laidback flow works excellently here. The chorus feels like it perfectly encapsulates that moment when you're at the pinnacle point of inebriation and you feel like your every move is brilliant, even as you know the train might come off the rails at any moment. Worst Song: Man Research (Clapper). Is it possible to overuse a vocal sample? Yeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeah. Overall: The album has a groovy, melted wax quality that makes it overall enjoyable as this kind of relaxed, thick, slow jam. It's too long, and several tracks could have been removed to keep the theme more on point, but maybe that isn't the point of an album like this.
Hmmm, a bit hit and miss this one. The singles give it a slight nostalgia bump, but it felt like there was plenty of filler too. Fave track - "Clint Eastwood". The video was awesome and Del the Funky Homosapien's flows are sick!
Starts off as a typical Blur album but quickly snowballs to become a genre-bending project of its own, in a bag. Hip-hop, alt-rock, breakbeat, reggae, rap... Albarn brings together a talented consortium of artists to make an LP that exists solely within its own class while building on well-recognized tropes, in a bag. The album definitely struggles in the editing department (some of these tracks are clearly base-level melodic ideas extended to 3 or 4 minutes), but there's enough gold here to warrant relistening, in a bag.
Enjoyable. Mostly killer, very little filler. Jane - 3 Bill - 3.5 Conor - 3.75 Shannah - 3.5 (3.45/5)
fav track - 19-2000
i don't think i'm cool enough to listen to this album! it was an enjoyable listen and i can see how groundbreaking this was in 2001--and still today, even. i enjoy some of gorillaz' music, but some songs here just missed the mark for me. good, unique, but it couldn't excite me as much as i thought.
It’s good I’m just not getting as much out of it as I’d how to. It’s really like a high 3
Whereas Demon Days is still pretty strong, I am quite a bit surprised that this album has stood the test of time and is in the list. Bought it on cd at the time, but never got into it. And now, 20 years later, became bored again quite soon by the concept and the general mediocrity of the song material. Of course, I am not talking about the two biggest singles: Clint Eastwood and 19-2000 (note that the Soulchild remix is much better than the original version). The other two singles are ok too. The rest is 1-2-3 star. So three stars overall seems about right.
Meh, I'm just not a big Gorillaz fan. It's kinda quirky and weird concept album, a couple good radio tracks, but other than that, I don't love it.
3/5 11/05/22 Good first album, quite experimental and original but still fun to listen.
Lots of hits. Lots of misses.
Good. 3/5
The kind of deep funk tracks I needed for the day. These were some good songs when they hit the radio. They should have made the advisory sticker HUGE and part of the cover art design, because screw those people.
Some pretty cool grooves. 3 stars.
Novel, kind of interesting
nije mi njihov najbolji album
listened to again has some great tracks but a lot of filler
Damon Albarn's first forays into something a little more experimental than Blur's usual stuff. An interesting mix of dance, electronica, hip-hop and indie (hard to detach Damon's... sorry 2-D's vocals from Blur)
Instrumental grooves and chill Latin beats
Nice alternative album by the gorillaz. They have their own style and it’s pretty awesome. A few songs on this album drag it out and could’ve been cut off but most this album is good. Clint Eastwood is a solid song. 6.9/10
Liked even better than when it just came out.
I really remember enjoying this album when I was young. It's super not my vibe anymore, Clint eastwood is forever a solid banger though. No lies can be told there.
Wanted to like it, but was just background music.
I know two songs by the Gorillaz before listening to this album. Clint Eastwood from this album and Feel Good Inc. from the second album. After listening to this album Clint Eastwood is still the one that stands out. None of the other songs are as good as it. The songs are generally uninspiring. I dont have a need to listen to this whole album again. Probably should be a 2.7 but I will round up.
I only know like two songs by these guys. You know an album is going to be interesting when Wikipedia doesn't know what genre it is. "Alternative rock / art pop / hip-hop / lo-fi"? What the hell does that even mean? Okay, this is pretty good overall. "Clint Eastwood" is the one song I heard before and I think it's also the best one. There's some pretty unremarkable ones here as well, like "Man Research (Clapper)" and "New Genius (Brother)". Those songs aren't bad, just kind of boring. Pretty sure that's the lo-fi part.
So coooool… Nice one here
Some interesting arrangements but no songs that particular grabbed me.
Pretty good but I didn't get that much out of it to be honest
No where near as good as I remembered but a few gems.
Enjoyable
Good, but no Demon Days. Didn't add (and already own Demon Days).
Kiinnostavaa, yks biisi meni listallekin. Alku oli tosi jees, loppua kohden lähti vähän laukalle. Mut hauskaa et tuli suositus, kun oon jonkin aikaa jo miettiny bändiin tutustumista tarkemmin. Tän perusteella kannattaa jatkaa.
Great Indie nostalgia.
Not bad, but not great. The two obvious stand out tracks, but the rest are so-so
Enjoyable dance/rock album from one of Blur's founding members. 3.5 🌟
Pretty good. A little long.
An interesting album with an unique sound. "Clint Eastwood" is phenomenal, but the rest of the album, although good doesn't live up to the standard set by that song.
The skeleton of the unmistakable sound of Gorillaz is there but not fully realised. Personally, I think Plastic Beach is the best example of their musical ingenuity and I think they really shine when they collaborate with other artists, a thing which is lacking in their debut album (compared to their other albums). Something which I’ve always appreciated Gorillaz for is their willingness to experiment with sounds and there is a nice variety here. Overall, not their best work but it’s definitely not bad either. Fave tracks: Clint Eastwood/19-2000 Leave fave track: Sound Check (Gravity)
It’s hard to say whether this album simply pales in comparison to the Gorillaz albums to come after it, or if it’s really just too slight and sketchy (I lean towards this; it feels more like Albarn and co. are exploring rather than establishing), but it’s wild that *this* is the Gorillaz album to hear before you die. St. Peter will turn your ass around and send you back if you think you’re just gonna shuffle off without hearing Demon Days or Plastic Beach.
I didn’t like Gorillaz when I was 10, and I don’t like them any more now. “Clint Eastwood” is a passably decent song, as it was upon release, but everything else was just background noise.
This album was pretty blah and boring for me. Slow and chill, maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it. The standout was Clint Eastwood tho.
Kinda boring? Had some interesting moments. 5/10 Decent
I just wasn’t really feeling this one. I like some of the singles and remixed versions of them but overall this just isn’t my thing. 2/5.
Gorillaz just never clicked with me. I cannot really find much to be excited about on this record. It isn't bad anywhere at all, but it isn't taking me somewhere either. 2/5
The album is quite inconsistent and only 2 songs could convince me after all these years.
not my type of songs... cool beats tho
i was in a bad mood when i listened to it + am prejudiced against damon albarn so my rating is prob not worth much. i did think it was funny when he called gorillaz the first nonbinary band.
Pre-meme music.
A little rough. They didn't know who they were yet -
Honestly…..this sounds like music made for teenagers. Like teenagers probably eat this stuff up thinking that they’re alt for listening to this music. I mean, good for them, I guess. I only knew this because of the song, "Clint Eastwood." No idea what was going on, except it was made by Damon Albarn and that I was super tired of that track as a single.Hearing the rest of the album, it feels like an uneasy mix of hiphop tracks and dub reggae. The melodica, echo effects, etc. Seeing that Dan the Automator was a part of this makes a lot more sense. It's fine. I don't think it's completely successful, but it isn't as bad as others. So two stars for being relatively inoffensive.
It's okay.
definitely have better albums than this
It's very nice concept but I didnt add any its not really my thing anymore
kinda buns
Thought it was okay. I struggled with the fact that the vocals often felt somewhat empty and disconnected from the instrumentals, and the drums always felt very similar across songs and in my opinion didn't change very often. I think that this album suffers from its length and therefore kind of blurs together. I did enjoy the more abstract sounds included and thought they added a good bit of character. I liked Double Bass a lot and would listen to it again. I think this album is good for a very specific moment in time, but it's not something that I would replay in its entirety very often.
I really thought this was going to be a lot better than it was considering this was everywhere when I was in high school. But it turns out this is just very basic, Gorillaz are just one hit wonders.
I don't have a lot to say about this because it's just really not my thing.
Love Blur, but Gorillaz have never really done it for me. Ok in places, but lacking any really strong Melodies.
I have never understood the appeal of Gorillaz…
Kicking off the century that's likely to see the majority of life on Earth wiped out by human/capitalist greed/stupidity, it's an art project featuring a member of Blur! My son and his friend loved this album at the age of 7 or so. The cartoon characters appealed to them, I think. I just heard sub-par trip-hop/Fatboy Slim pastiches. I mean, it has its moments, so isn't completely devoid of merit, but I think I'll put it to one side and remember it as a small boys' introduction to modern music.
Feels like listening to a collection of experimental b-sides. Some just okay, others absolute rubbish. 'Punk' feels like it was farted out in 15 minutes. Even 'Clint Eastwood' is a keyboard preset. Was hoping more from my first listen to a full Gorillaz album.
I like the Gorillaz, but not this album. You can listen to it in the background, but honestly, it bored me a bit; I don't find it particularly special.
I was looking forward to this but it was painfully mid. I’m starting to think Damon Albarn is less talented as he is lucky and surrounded by talented people.
A couple cutesy/fun songs but mostly forgettable dreck.
meh not my style
Decent background music, not super hyped - a little sleepy for me.
Bit up itself.
Clint Eastwood top tier
16.5.2026
Let’s take lots of bits of music and throw them all together in a blender. Most of it not terrible but not very good either. 2.5
I don't know what it is with me and Gorillaz. I feel like something is missing, like everyone else is hearing something that I'm just not. This album is so dull and mediocre, with only a few highlights just like Plastic Beach. Clint Eastwood might be the most overrated song of all time, ugh. 5/10
ya lo escuché
Clint Eastwood and 19-2000 are great but overall it's not that exciting. Gorillazs improve with later albums
It had its time, my copy nevers gets played. Suppose that tells a story
tråkigare än jag kom ihåg
no es mi estilo
I didn’t want to like this album, and I ended up not liking it.
I "liked" it, but it's very repetitive. I got the point after 10 minutes. Good background music with headphones I suppose. Clint Eastwood is a good song though. Clearly the standout.
Solid but wasn't really for me
Very good album. Solid listen.
não gostei muito não
Not much to say. Obviously the Gorillaz is a very talented band and 'Clint Eastwood' is quite a famous track from this album, but it's not personally my style or the kind of music I vibe with.
Needed more songs like Clint Eastwood, Rock the House, and 19-2000
Eh, overrated. I think at the time when this came out it was novel, but now listening to Damon Albarn is tough as he just sounds so melancholy and boring. Favorite Track: 19-2000
boring
decent
didn't enjoy it
Some bops but sitting through this hours was hard
if you're gonna do really sparse arrangements then either they have to be compositionally interesting or the individual sounds need to be interesting. this has neither, and it's made worse by out of tune vocals. at least the vocal features provide a break from that.
Huge fan of the singles here and Gorillaz later work but the album itself I was less impressed with. Feels very dated and sparse, straightforward tracks with not much to them. Clint Eastwood and Del pushed them forward 100%
Honk shoe
Not my style
Coming into this, I hated Gorillaz. They seemed to represent the worst bits of Blur, the most soulless bits of modern pop music, all wrapped up in a white guy's hip hop and anime obsession with a veneer of a fake band. But if i'm going to do this, I need listen as objectively as I can. I was surprised at the first few tracks. They aren't quite blur, but they're much closer than to the sound I have heard. I didn't like the first two, but they put the conception that I would hate this out of my head. There was hope. And honestly, some of this album is OK. Latin Simone benefits from sounding more like an Ibrahim Ferrer project than the rest of the album. But then we get to the singles, and I sincerely do not know what people fell in love with. "Clint Eastwood" bores me to tears, which is in part, I am sure, because Damon sounds like he is struggling to stay awake. It plods in a very different, more ploddy way than the other tracks. On the other hand, 19-2000 is an asinine nightmare despite contributions from absolute legends Miho Hatori and Tina Weymouth. It's at least not the acid chipmunk fever dream of the single. I couldn't do 15 tracks of that. But it somehow is even more uncool as a clunky slow word salad. The stuff between those songs aren't great either. There's a lot of Albarn's more yowling bits. There's the tin flute that sounds like it was just learned yesterday on Rock the House, giving the same vibes as albarn's singing. Overall not good, but for very different reasons than expected. 2*, top track Tomorrow Comes Today
This hasnt aged well in my opinion. Aside from a couple of catchy tunes its pretty repetitive sounding.
Ok first of all, there is no way this came out in 2001, that's not possible. This was OK, I'm surprised I didn't get into it at the time. It ran out of ideas towards the end though
