Reviews (page 12 of 14)

Decent with a few bangers

Mid. Sorry.

Me hizo doler la cabeza.

mid to lowkey ass - sound slop

I wish I liked this more, but I just cannot physically make myself enjoy it all that much.

DNF - Honestly kinda annoying

Stuck somewhere between late Blur and really bad hip hop. It’s not clever, it is Albarn’s half-arsedness trying to be Goldfrapp.

ciekawe, ale 2 raz bym nie słuchał

Genuinely so overrated. Can’t believe they have this album over Demon Days to listen to.

Hate to be that guy after they were on SNL and are touring again and shit, but I found everything outside of the singles pretty damn boring. Were the anime personas better than the overall product?

Ach, it’s fine. I’m on a run of decent early-2000s albums right now and I’m getting a bit tired. This album is fine. The singles are fun and the production is good throughout. They have better albums than this.

I remember when this first came out and didn't really get the hype. But I was 13. But, nah still not for me. I like the idea of the blend of genre that they do but just doesn't work for me

I remember this from a while ago there’s like three good songs and the rest are just all over the place. it doesn’t know what genre it wants to be it’s just weird. I’ll give it 2

Clint Eastwood is phenomenal but the album as a whole doesn't do much for me.

Favorite tracks: Clint Eastwood, Tomorrow Comes Today, Sound Check (Gravity) This was exactly what I would expect as the debut album of an experimental band. Definitely interesting, but doesn't feel quite put together. Clint Eastwood still holds up remarkably well, but a lot of the other songs sound like Damon Albarn messing around with sounds in his basement studio

They get better

Would've made a fantastic EP - as if this gets the nod over Demon Days?!?

Met uitzondering van Clint Eastwood, niet mijn ding

The timing of this assignment couldn’t be more perfect, seeing as the next Gorillaz album is slated to drop less than four days from now – I’ve got just enough time to binge a few of their other acclaimed albums before The Mountain is out, if I so desire. Side tangent, but the album is going to have SIX different tracks featuring Anoushka Shankar. She’s not only related to Ravi and Ananda Shankar, but is also apparently the half-sister of Norah Jones (each of whom have an album included here). Talk about a musically-inclined family, holy smokes! Anyway, I’ll admit that I’ve always liked “Feel Good Inc.” I mean, how could I not? That bass line is generational. At the same time, I can’t say I enjoyed it so much that I ever felt the need to dig any further into the band’s discography. I think the most curious I ever got was around the release of Humanz, but I don’t think I listened to more than one song from that campaign (knowing myself, it was probably the track with Vince Staples). Truth be told, I didn’t even realize they put out three albums in between that one and The Mountain. All that said, I was pretty excited to finally run through the band’s fabled self-titled album! I had never actually listened to “Clint Eastwood” before today and I kind of regret sleeping on that one because it’s definitely an earworm. Am I kicking myself for not checking out the full album sooner? Ehhh, not really. There are certainly seeds of something special here, but this first crack at the bat is so boring and overstuffed that I was left scratching my head a bit – was the virtual band gimmick so novel that people were hyping up music this mid in 2001 (and beyond)? Was it kind of cool hearing Damon Albarn’s take on trip hop here? Sure. Am I ever going to come back to those cuts when Mezzanine by Massive Attack is right there? Absolutely not. Will I end up revisiting any of my first-listen highlights (outside of “Clint Eastwood”)? Jury’s still out, I guess. While I didn’t expect this album to fall on the “disliked” side of the spectrum for me, I’m actually quite hopeful going forward – the band-aid has been ripped off and now there’s nothing stopping me from checking out Demon Days or skimming through any number of other Gorillaz albums. Maybe I’ll appreciate the debut more in hindsight, who knows? Highlights: Tomorrow Comes Today, Clint Eastwood, Double Bass, 19-2000, M1 A1

Sounded okay, I'm sure 1001 will love it. I have heard some of these tracks before. 2

I struggled a bit to get through this and skipped through the ends of a few of the songs.

First time listening to this all the way through and not just the one hit. Has some interesting stuff, but I found myself enjoying the hip-hop and stripped down songs the most. Overall, just too many songs. Trim this down to 10 good tracks and it gets a higher rating.

Fake cartoon band? Blur with extra steps? No graham coxon? This was so much better when Damon wasn’t singing or trying his sleepy flow. 1.5⭐️

Can be enjoyable for a while but good lord this did not have to be an hour long. I got extremely worn out by this a little over halfway through.

Genuinely, not my vibe. Got some good beats but to be fr 5/10

Not a fan of Blur, but this is a little different I really like Clint Eastwood, but the rest of the album is either filler or throwing stuff out there to see what sticks, giving a very uneven feel Ultimately, I just dont get it

An interesting concept with a couple of clear singles which bought them time to continue their experiment. This album leans a bit too much into dub, which limits the variety and experimentation the project was meant to provide. Later albums are better but may not appear due to them not having the novelty.

Havent had the inclination to listen to the Gorillaz ouvre. I now know why. This wont happen again.

Honestly, I get that it's a cool album, but it really wasn't my vibe. "Clint Eastwood" is the best song, and the seemingly only famous one from the album.

This does little for me compared to their later work. The gorillaz do have some bangers but they are not on this- it's largely just the more boring parts of rock and rap together, whcih is a shame because when it is greater than the sum of its parts it slaps. Has moments of brightness but they get better later on at refining these out of the genre fusion.

Know the singles, don't mind them. The rest is kinda just meh though. Post triphop/Brit pop? Ultimately the Gorillaz project was more than the music, BUT this project (1001 albums) is about albums. The next 2 Gorillaz album are improvement on this. I don't hate it, but I doubt I'd actively listen to it again.

Primera escucha: Todo bastante meh. La versión bonus de Clint Eastwood tiene un pase. Quizá habría que darle otra oportunidad. Por el momento, un 2/5.

Wrong day for me to listen to it. Just sounded outdated

this album is just boring. it brings some interesting production into the mix (which I enjoyed at times!) but ultimately falls flat (especially their singing voices, dear lord). yeah, I expected more, I like their later albums more. its just not hitting at my desk on this monday morning... 3/10

Disappointed I didn't like this more but I just don't think I get Damon Albarn

Album 45 Top 3 "favorites" off the album: Double Bass, Dracula, Tomorrow Comes Today Another one that grinds my gears. I've never been a fan of Gorillaz and after this album I'm still not. There were a couple tunes I was neutral towards, but the sound just isn't my thing. I think it's a matter if the vocals getting on my nerves than the rest of the instrumentation (Man Researcher (Clapper) for example). I enjoyed tracks with bare minimum vocals the most, too, (Double Bass), so there's another point. The concept of the band itself was vaguely interesting to me when one of my best friends was into them, but never enough to get me to listen extensively. Now that I've done my due diligence, I intend on returning to my former habit of not listening to them at all. Thank you.

Not my fav Gorillaz album

Every song could be cut in half and be unaffected. They're extremely repetitive songs, and comprise of the same measure, mouth-made sound effect, or riff hundreds of time over and over. Most of the songs aren't very enjoyable but I found solace in three or four. 4/10

Really like Gorillaz but their first isn't my favourite. Good singles but overall quite long and unfocused. Would definitely recommend Demon Days or Plastic Beach over this.

didn't like it

Chill beats

Blur never a favourite of mine so I never bothered to give these a listen or take too much notice of. I have stumbled across this album again by way of buying it cheap second hand. As part of a five for £1 CD deal it was worth a punt. As it turns out quite a reasonable punt. Not an album I can listen to start to end but to hear tracks randomly as part of a shuffling playlist it’s OK. So many styles and genres are on the album so you never know what you’re going to get. 2/5 4/2/26

Knew some Songs! It’s Fine to Listen to, But Not really my vibe

I’m really torn on this one. On one hand, you have absolute standouts like 'New Genius (Brother),' 'Clint Eastwood,' and 'Man Research (Clapper)'—tracks that are genuinely brilliant and kept me engaged. However, the rest of the album feels incredibly repetitive. Beyond those few highlights, the experience was a bit of a slog, and I found it difficult to stay interested through the filler. While the songs I liked, I really liked, they aren't enough to carry the weight of the entire project for me. It’s a frustrating listen because the potential is clearly there, but it just gets lost in the monotony.

I think I'm too old to be a Gorillaz fan. I liked few songs, but mostly I was just annoyed.

some songs on the second half are kinda nice, but in general it's not my thing

Great songs and interesting beats but for some reason I can’t get over the hate I have for Gorillaz maybe it’s a 2020 thing

Honestly I loved this album back in the day but now its a hard listen, it sounds so dated to me.

No thanks.

Listening to all these is starting to feel more and more like an obligation now and this album was the real first casualty of feeling this way, I skimmed though most songs. I definitely like their later stuff more than this album it doesn’t really go anywhere. Always thought the group was a cool concept though.

"Wow, that dude's really trying to sound like the guy from Blur." *Reads the Wiki* "Oh." This was OK, I guess. There were some good ideas explored here and there, but I'm not sure how well they coalesced in the end. Overall, the album doesn't feel like it has much of an identity outside of serving as the container for its relatively disparate parts. Buoyed by much worse things on this list, it lands somewhere in 2 to 3 territory. I guess I'll break towards 2 since, based on other reviews and the certifications & sales information on Wikipedia, this isn't their best album. And based on this album, I'm now not interested enough to go and explore that other album, so I'm probably missing out on what would have been a better experience. Robert, you really suck at this.

It is fine. As someone that has been on a big Blur kick lately, this album disappoints me a bit. I found Damon's act to be annoying, as his voice irks me a bit. It works in a britpop setting, but this just seems out of his element. Not to mention I am not a fan of trip hop at all. This isn't to say there aren't any bangers, "Clint Eastwood" and "19-2000" (among a few others) are really good. This album is just way too long for a genre I am not a fan of. 2.5

I like Gorillaz. This is interesting because its their first step, and Clint Eastwood is amazing, but Demon Dayz to me is the album that should be here

Honestly, I think this album is kind of boring. At least it begins very boring. I didn't like any purely Gorillaz songs except for some instrumentals like "Double Bass". Yeah, I understand that they tried to mix a bunch of genres, but I don't know how well that worked. Either way, it does have famous songs that are good, but those are collaborations. And it also ends just with remixes of the two most famous songs, which just seems lazy, I don't know. Maybe I am biased because I didn't like these remixes. Or because I just don't really like the genre. I do like some fo their music but I wouldn't listen to this album

Aikas mitäänsanomatonta

Clint Eastwood is the only decent song

lowkey noise music im sorry. there’s like 2 songs on here that i sorta like

Kind of a boring start. Soothing but not like the gorillaz I’m used too. Pretty good but feels more like background music. Favorite track M1 A1. Last song leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Best: Clint Eastwood Worst: Remix of Clint Eastwood Never been a huge fan of Gorillaz and this album reinforces that. I can appreciate how diverse the sound is, one track from another has different instrumentation, vocals themes and production. However it just doesn't evoke much for me, I often feel like damon albarn is trying too hard to be creative and missing the forest for the trees

Listening to this album has made me realise I thought I liked gorillaz more than I actually do.

Just not that interesting.

I really only liked Clint Eastwood on this album

Some songs just dragged on, like what is with these albums and repeating the same thing again and again. Some songs were bangers. Some were meh and I like the Gorillaz, I just don’t think this album was fully for me. I like a few songs like Clint Eastwood, Punk & Rock The House. 2 Stars 5th Of January

This album is all over the place.

Only clint eastwood and 19-2000 is good, the rest of the album is ok, but is a great whatever.

Flöjten i Rock the House är ändå bra. Känns mest som ett experiment.

The album is fine, not an offensive listen. It has a few highlights, but other than that it's just noise. A lot of songs overstay their welcome, with weirdly long intros/outros. And there is just too much repetition on this album, some songs have two or three lines repeated over and over. Two stars. (Favorite track: Clint Eastwood.)

Watched while making dinner and cleaning up. Honestly thought it was boring through most of it. I like Clint Eastwood and 19-2000 a lot but didn't really feel the rest of it. I've heard a bit of their later releases and liked them quite a bit more.

Clint Eastwood rips. The rest of this album is a snooze.

Não faz o meu estilo. Demasiado urbano.

The vibe of the album is pretty interesting, but it's not something I'll listen to. The rap parts are pretty cool.

Love the Eastwood song, but beyond that it's not my genre. Definitely interesting, but not the kind of music I gravitate towards. Glad I experienced it, though!

Not my thing

-some of it reminds me of pink floyd -not really my style of music -i liked soundcheck (gravity) -some reminds me of a punk band of teenagers -lyrics are kind of hard to understand -song titles slightly confuse me -kind of likes M1A1, weird vibe

Started off with and carries an interesting sound, but by track 2 I'm not really feeling it. The beats sound good, but the vocals are meh and not overall something that clicks with me. I like the production, but the songs themselves feel hollow, for lack of a better word. They can still make me nod my head or tap a foot, but idk. I think the best way to describe this is forgettable and bloated, it's filled with average songs and then a good one every now and then. 5/10, I can see the appeal, but this album isn't for me. Favorite Tracks: Man Research (Clapper) Least Favorite Tracks: 5/4, Punk

I’m shocked to say this but, I didn’t really like this. It was exciting and interesting at first, but then it really meandered on into just… noise.

I never really got the hype for this. Albarn was obviously trying out new ideas but I don't think things had really gelled yet. Demon Days is better

Lowkey dont like. Some songs are good, then others are boring. An example of a fun song on the album is “Punk”. I feel there is more boring songs on the album then fun ones. Plus it’s pretty long. The production seems cool but other than that its kinda boring.

I can finally say out loud that I never understood the hype towards Gorillaz. Some singles are soooo good, and Plastic Beach is a great record, but apart from that, their music does not say much to me. Clint Eastwood is a banger though.

Incredibly boring

I remember how popular this album was when it came out. I didn't find the music or their corny cartoon characters particularly compelling back then, and it certainly hasn't aged any better. The fusion of hip-hop, rock, and rap isn't exactly unique, but they branded themselves a certain way to be more appealing to a broader audience. Although this is their only album on this list, it isn't even their best. That nod goes to Demon Days.

This was a slog to get through. I'm sure when this came out it was revolutionary in some way but now it just doesn't feel special and is incredibly boring. 15 songs that are less than 5 minutes just means none of them are memorable on first listen. The singing is uninteresting and the heavy use of sampling is used to boring effect. I was going to give it a 3 at the start but after an hour of listening it's going down to a 2.

Very rare sound for this era but all the songs sound like video game menu music

It was just too dang repetitive, which worked when I was really vibing with the song (and I was for a couple) but got annoying when I wasn’t (which happened more). I’m pretty sure the “helloooo is anyone there” sound clip in M1 A1 will feature in a nightmare for me at some point. Clint Eastwood and the cover art were both good though.

Goodmorning Starshine, the earth says hello! :D Ooooh, this album is an Aries halfway through...I'm kinda bored. I'm sad that I'm kinda bored. I know people love this, and I'm sad i don't get to understand why. And now I'm done listening and I'm still just mostly bored by this album. It feels so...lacking. I'm honestly confused on how Damon Albarn got on his high horse about lyrics a few years ago if this is his writing??? This is the only thing I've really heard so far, and I am willing to hear more. The production was fine, fun at parts but just there at others. I'm just left really confused by this since they're held up in such high regard. Songs I liked: "Clint Eastwood" - I clicked on the genius lyric page just happy to see the wall of words "Punk" - I had a lot of fun with this one, really short tho "Rock The House" was really fun. I actually laughed at the Egghead/Wallflower line. I know that's a call out on my type, but i can't help it. Analyzing things and being a nerd is where i find joy. That line also is like the only lyric in the entire project where I felt that "ping" of joy in my heart like I do when listening to my favorite artists. "M1 A1" - Really odd but fascinating song. I know it's sampling a movie called "Day of the Dead", but it reminded me of the twilight zone and I love it for that. I like how it goes from a minute of that into scrambling guitars, very fun. Reminded me of Kate Bush. I do no see myself coming back to this album like every. Maybe in 10 years? Maybe if I meet someone and their like "Literally my favorite album" I'd give it another go. I'm just...confused. Like, "Man Research" sounds like a 5 year old running around their kitchen trying to annoy their mom. 2.5/5 sorry :(

I like Sound Check but a lot of the songs miss for me. The engaging sections are too far separate to be completely enjoyable.

The singles remain good, but there's some right shite on this album. Sure, it's kind of experimental, but some of it sounds like filling up the album with any old crap. I really wanted to like it but I didn't. Damon Albarn's voice can be incredibly irritating.

acho gorillaz uma bela bosta. nunca desceu.

I like a lot of their songs, but can't listen to many others. Repetitive lyrics wind me up.

good not my style but you can listen to it

I really want to like this album but I just don’t. I will definitely try again at a later stage because I love Damon.

I remember reeally liking this album when it came out. While there are some good songs there are other songs that are just plain terrible. Not sure what was going on at the time but this is probably the most unbalanced album I've ever heard. I would say out of the 17 songs there probably about 3 good songs. Too slow and a mismatch of genres that are just lazily done, very few standouts.

i mean it's alright... overrated as f**K

Besides Clint Eastwood and a couple more songs, not his is really interesting here

Enjoyed this less than I thought I would. I felt it fell a bit flat. I did listen to it twice, because I first listened early in the morning and didn’t concentrate that much, then again on a flight. But both times didn’t enjoy that much. Enjoyed the Clint Eastwood remix the most.

I was excited because I didn’t know any tracks off this album except “Clint Eastwood” and “19-2000” but I’m a fan of “Demon Days” and “Plastic Beach”. Turns out I wasn’t missing much. You can see hints of what’s to come in future albums as Damon’s sound for the band developed but this album wasn’t as good as I’d hoped it’d be.

Recognizing Ibrahim Ferrer from Buena Vista Social Club was pretty neat. I was like... that sounds familiar! The rest of the album I didn't dig that much. The intrumental side of Starshine interested me a bit

I thought this would be better. This came out when I was a teenager. It was a huge sensation though I have to say the entire virtual band bit seemed stupid back then as well. Did folks really not know it was Damon Albarn? Because it sounds exactly like him. Anyway outside of the gimmick the album is pretty weak overall. I mean Clint Eastwood is a banger but other than that it’s pretty humdrum. Let’s say two stars.

- I like their singles, but I never really got into their full albums. This album is helping me see why. Obv, Clint Eastwood is a banger, and Tomorrow Comes Today is also good. - Overall, I find the album to be plodding, and it feels experimental just for the sake of it. There are interesting parts/grooves in each of the songs, but not enough to make sitting through the whole song pleasurable - you have to deal with the rest of the song trying so hard to be atypical. I’d just rather listen to other trip hop. - I also don’t think that Damon’s voice fits on a lot of the songs (though, I like it in Blur). It can get so grating, whiny, and babyish - especially on New Genious (Brother), Man Research - which makes the song unlistenable for me, the beginning/end of Sound Check (Gravity; but I like it on the middle part of the song), and Starshine... I can't understand the lyrics, for the most part, so that's not even something I can hold on to, and what I do understand is... not remarkable, though I know they're supposed to be talking about world issues. Would be nice to be able to hear it. - Also, I couldn't care any less about the fake situations this fake band are going through.

Gorillaz no me entusiasma, y bueno pues el álbum a mí me deja un poco fría, aunque sobre estimulada. Diría que es mi estado vital, pero siento que es así con todos los álbumes parecidos. 2.5 o 3.

This sucked

I like and own Clint Eastwood, but I didn’t enjoy the rest all that much.

Better as night music, but still boring, still nowhere near as good as Blur. What is the deal.

Cool album, but not their best

Decent concept

Not my fave ngl. I liked the hits I already knew but the whole album? Not for me - it was fine, a bit boring

Oh man this is so disappointing, and so dull. It's remarkable that you can have a great opening single / music video reveal to the world in 'Clint Eastwood', and then the rest of the debut album just be completely boring. I don't get all the positive reviews on here. The best I can say is it's 'ok'. It's kind of chill in places - in fact much more chill and slow than I was expecting. It's a bit weird, but not in a good way. It's just kind of weird and basic. I will say that I still really like a bunch of Gorillaz songs outside of this. Also, the two remixes on here (that can't be reviewed as part of the album itself) are really good. They give a lot more energy to the tracks, particularly 19-2000, which is way better as a result.

Don’t like this

Kinda weird idea for a “band” but some of the music was decent.

A lot of my friends really enjoy The Gorillaz... all I can say to them is. How? I'd rather the guy start a composing shtick and write some Y2K inspired Video Game Bangers rather then this bland ass album. There's some good ideas, but terribly executed with annoying vocals and just weird instrumentation choices. 19-2000 was def the main highlight of this album, but again; remove the vocals, and pop it into a video game (i'm thinking a gas station theme for a game like Simpsons: Hit and Run but yea). Shame cause it's the sorta music I would describe as I would fancy but it fails the mark so much.

For the cultural significance of this band, I'm somewhat disappointed in how the album turned out. It is highly experimental and does neat little things, but it is so DULL. Not a fan one bit.

I didn't like this then, and I sure as hell don't like it any more now.

This album made me realize is really only like the hits that Gorillaz has put out. Everything else is just meh to me. Felt tedious to go through this album. Was waiting for the end. Some beats were good but man did they drag on.

It was kinda boring honestly like I didn't really like the main singer's voice. But the song Clint Eastwood was really good.

Disappointing really. I expected I waa going to enjoy this but maybe Trip Hop isn't my thing? Lots of lanquid, not very interesting songs. Very little memorable. Fave Tune = Clint Eastwood

One, maybe two bangers, otherwise just more boring britpop to test my patience with this list.

Certainly a unique sound but I found the slow constant beat of the snare drum was something akin to torture. Some interesting mix of styles going on but not something I would go back to.

Must admit I was never a Gorillaz fan. Some of this sounds like wonky Blur, and the rest I wasn't too keen on. I actually got quite bored towards the end. I don't think it has done anything to change my opinion.

Not really interesting, background music

Meh. Not bad but nothing particularly spectacular either.

never ever have i understand the hype around them

A strange choice. The stuff sounds like a deliberate piss take and really could be ignored.

2 pretty good singles does not make an album full of filler essential.

Rock musicians trying to get in on the rap revolution led to a lot of bad music. Nu-Metal the biggest loser, RATM a rare exception. This is most apparent when bands like this forcefully include the table scratch sound. I remember this quickly became a sign of a bad song. It barely works in actual rap! My memories of this album and specifically Clint Eastwood are all tied to the music video, and that brings me to my next point: aesthetics in the early 2000’s were at an all time low. Album covers, music videos, clothes everything was in a weird new digital age and the transition was clunky as hell. I’m sure I’m forgetting a few things that worked well and it could be some function of thinking the world sucked 25 years ago, but this whole cartoon universe they created sucks. All that said, some of this impressed me. 5/4 was my favorite. Overall though, didn’t need this. Also what the hell was Del rapping about? I read the lyrics in Clint Eastwood a few times and could not follow.

Not amazing to my ears, BUT it was cool to read up on the blur -> gorillaz transition and the super collaborative environment that created the various sounds. I grew up on some of this, but found a new track Man Research to be my favorite. Somewhere around 2 stars

The best part of this album is obviously Clint Eastwood. I'll be honest I thought Del Tha Funkee Homosapien was part of Gorillaz, not a guest act (and in my memory, I definitely thought the rap on Feel Good Inc. was also Del until I just googled it and found out it was De La Soul). I don't really love the rest of the album. Just feels like Blur, and I'm not a big Blur fan Only other comment: the cartoon band thing is pretty fun - a cool open acknowledgement that the persona behind the music plays a big role in how much we like the music (like when you find out a rapper is white, you're automatically like oh fuck off this sucks). And obviously it makes the band more memorable. In other words...it's a good gimmick, but I don't love the product

Between this and Blur, I think Damon and I have very different ideas of what makes good music.

eh, alright

Double Bass and 19-200 were good. But overall just too long and repetitive. Some nice stuff here and there but never understood why they would appeal to everyone so much.

Good single…the rest is blah.

Started well, got bored

Through the years I have sometimes wondered what the rest of the album sounds like, having only heard Clint Eastwood on the radio while in grammar school. Now I know. Feels more like a collection of rough song sketches than a coherent album. A hard listen for me. Still bopping along to Clint Eastwood tho. Favorite track: Clint Eastwood

i didn't listen till the end i guess not my vibe. Weird mush up of rap and sad music i guess.

You know, when people would tell me they didn't my music I was always in shock. Like, how could you not grasp it? Were you not paying attention? Am I secretly smarter than the average human and here is my math problem on the chalk board moment? No, no, no, none of that is true, but here I am, not getting this. So many people have told me I'm crazy to not get this album, but I don't. I like Demon Days better in every way.

different

Slow and trancey mix of electronica and hip hop. I found most of the songs to be too sparse and downbeat. 19-2000 is fantastic though, and Clint Eastwood is ok. But they were the singles I've heard a million times so maybe it's just familiarity.

First half was ok. Highlight was Clint Eastwood. Other than that pretty mid

Honestly don't have too much to say about this one. It's a fine album, but nothing special, and wouldn't find myself listening to any of the songs again.

I was quite disappointed by this. The singles didn't hold up very well, and the non-singles were a bit annoying or even dour at times. It's also a classic CD-era album that is overstuffed just to max out the full length of the CD. This could have used a lot of editing.

Overrated

Not quite

I enjoy some Gorillaz but wasn't really into this

Maybe I'm in the minority here but this is definitely side project territory and doesn't come close to the heights of Blur.

I am a fan of Gorillaz. But this is not really a Gorillaz album. It's album where a man (Damon) is trying to discover the sound of a new band that happens to be called Gorillaz. It's an album where a man is transitioning his sound from one band to another, from Blur to something new. So it's not quite a Gorillaz album and it's not quite a Blur album. It's a messy hybrid. And to be honest, it's kind of mid. It's interesting, but it's not that enjoyable. If you know blur and you know Gorillaz, it's very interesting hearing Damon shift between the sounds in real time. It's enjoyable with a lot of context. But as a stand alone album, it's meh. It kind of reminds me of the Blur album we already reviewed, except worse. On that album the band was transitioning from their Brit Pop sound to a mash up of 90s alternative sounds. It was also messy, but it worked. This album doesn't really work for me. There are some fun Blur-y tracks like Punk and 5/4. There are a bunch of tracks that are messy hybrids of both sounds that are pretty forgettable... and there are too many of them (there are too many songs on this album in general). But the album does have a crown jewel, Clint Eastwood. It's the only song that feels truly like a Gorillaz song. What a track. It still holds up. It feels like the first ever Gorillaz song. Perhaps writing it was the moment where Damon finally saw the sound of this new project come into focus. We'll never know. But that's how it feels as a listener. Side note: How did listeners at the time not immediately know it was the guy from Blur in Gorillaz? I know at the time it was a mystery... but listening now, it feels so fucking obvious. Big parts of this album feel very similar to blur... and his voice isn't modified like it is on later Gorillaz albums. I guess it was a simpler, less online time when this thing came out. Lucky bastards.

There is a stark contrast between the songs with Del and those without. With Del I would give this album a 4 or a fringe 5. Without him it's more like a 2. They have really interesting instrumentals but they really just cannot be trusted to do their own vocals on this album without this sounding like whiny shoegaze bullshit.

Too laid back for me, but there's a couple of bangers. Still, a full album of this is not what I need, even when it is very well-produced.

I really like blur and much of the gorilaz other music but this album didn't do it for me. Besides Clint Eastwood there really aren't many memorable tracks. I respect the diversity and attempts but too many songs went on longer than they should've and too many misses for me

Much more drab and bleak than i thought it would be.

A bit dank, Latin Simone is a great track

Damon Albarn with the Gorillaz is better than Damon Albarn with Blur. He has four albums on this list, that's insane. This is a long album. And four songs in it's starting to feel long. Clint Eastwood was the hit and their big break. I remember liking it when it came out but it felt like it was overplayed very quickly. Man Research (Clapper) was cool for about three minutes. Unfortunately it went on for four and a half minutes. Every song seems very internally repetitive. The vocal affectation Albarn is putting on is getting really annoying as the album progresses. Double Bass without the singing is probably the best track on the album. The poorly played flute is not a positive addition to Rock the House. Del The Funky Homosapien is so tied to the Gorillaz that I think of his songs with them first. 19-2000 was the other big hit with the girl from Cibo Matto singing about cool shoeshines. It's still the best song on the album. Followed by a song with the Buena Vista Social Club guy that is easily the worst song on the album. Starshine has Albarn's weird voice on full display and then Slow Country is the same four words over and over again....needless to say the album is continuing to go downhill. And then M1 A1 is some clip of a guy yelling, "Is anyone there?" for almost two minutes. This album is too long. Bong noises, found sound recording of an Asian woman talking about playing an instrument, it all adds up to a terrible song. And ending with a remix of the album's first single. Jamaican guy talking, sped up, stripped down music, dance hall rapping...I don't love the original but this is worse.

I wasn’t that impressed or drawn in by any of the music on the album.

2. lovely artwork, the Del tracks are good, but the rest is so bland.

Some good moments, but none of the songs really spoke to me.

This just was really not quite it for me. Just felt mostly redundant and not very exciting as well as definitely too long. It does have great diversity of tracks however and a large variety of styles to keep things interesting. I still found it pretty boring though so I don’t know. Just not my thing I guess.

Boring

I think their later albums are better, but boy was this boring. I guess by "virtual band" they mean they make virtual music. Snooze.

The album SpongeBob listens to when he goes on walks and does his silly little dance. Honestly though, feels more like a proof of concept for Gorillaz, just kinda an ok samplefest.

Honestly, I’m amazed this mediocre album got so popular. It’s like they threw a bunch of random shit together and hoped no one would notice.. and apparently, no one did.

Eastwood is pretty much the only track I like. Demon Days is a better record.

Dull, too long, but was a bit of a big deal back in the day

En svale gjør ingen sommer, og to hits gjør intet album. Har sine øyeblikk, men hele skiva er et overaskende stort gjesp, Forventa mye mer, men hitsa - de kan ingen ta fra Albarn. Beste låt: Clint Eastwood.

Gjesp.

Clint Eastwood is always a win but the rest of the album just isn’t my cuppa.

Mener jeg har hørt flere låter av dem som jeg har likt godt tidligere. Ble litt skuffet for jeg hadde forventninger som ikke ble innfridd her.

The moment when Damon Albert stopped being an insufferably smug prick who hated working class people and became an insufferably smug prick who hated mass media consumption.

Ah, yes. The debut drop from the digital-- uhh, what's another alliterative D word? Drab band? I never listened to this album when it came out (but I've heard Clint Eastwood on the radio enough to know every word). Overall it feels more like a concept demo than a finished album. Aside from Eastwood and 5/4, the rest of the songs are just drifting ideas with interesting soundscapes but aren't memorable enough for me to want to listen to again.

postives: + i liked the 2000s pop vibe + was a better version of the wu-tang clan + the songs i listened to were a good length negatives: - i didnt get to listen to the whole album - i didnt know any songs my favourite songs: N/A

Mediocre. One good song so far. Heard till rock the house

I’ve liked other music by Gorillaz but I didn’t like this album

Mixed feelings. Some songs are great, some I can't stand.

It has some tracks I enjoyed but overall it doesn’t do enough for me

While I've always loved Jamie Hewlett's artwork, I never quite got into Tank Girl - it seems to do that thing that British comics always do where they make a huge deal of trying really hard to distance themselves from other comics... this comic is way too cool to be like all those other lame comics, look how subversive and different we are! And, in a way, that kind of sums up Gorillaz too - it's all a bit tongue-in-cheek and self-indulgent, at times you almost feel they are mocking the styles they are aping (hah - APING) rather than respecting them, a kind of snobbish "making *insert musical genre* is easy, look - we did it with a load of cartoon characters in our lunch hour" vibe. It's hard to judge Gorillaz without bringing all that baggage to the table, which perhaps is a little unfortunate. Their strengths are also their greatest weakness - I can't help thinking the very nature of Gorillaz sets the music up as something superficial; something not to be taken too seriously. I wasn't massively bowled over by it at the time - it's certainly an ambitious project in many respects, catchy and interesting in patches, but rarely both at the same time. I'd say I've definitely warmed to this album over the years to a degree, but it still has a lightweight, experimental feel to it, which is, perhaps, intentional, but, either way, it is lacking some real substance.

Pretty standard electronic sounds, synths and loops... unnecessarily quirky. Its like coworker music for 9/11 millennials. Correction* its a nursery rhyme for millenials

I was very excited for this album. But I found it painfully boring. The hits are honestly great, but there is a reason they were the singles. The rest of the album is very repetitive. Every time I thought they were going in an interesting direction with the song, they'd just basically stop and go back to the same old repetitive part. Really disappointing. I can't ever see myself voluntarily listening to this entire album again.

Not my thing at all

This album is pretty meh besides Clint Eastwood (which, yes, I still somehow know all the words to???)

This was an extremely long listen…. The album is very dated and perhaps for its time, it was groundbreaking but now it’s just dated. The idea of a cartoon band was novel and the idea that Blur Fromtman Damon Albert had a creative outlet to let Loose is great but the album gets boring after a while. Best song is probably M1 A1 which sounds like a variation of Pink Floyd.

This is not top 1,000. Sounds like an elementary group singing when there was singing.

This is an awful spin off from a band. Go back to Blur (does happen).

These guys probably really like Radiohead.

Snooze. Why is this taking up space on the list?? Oh wait, it’s because it’s Blur frontman’s

I might be cranky but it feels like this album is trying to be annoying. It's plodding, repetitive and nonsensical.

Blah. Sorry, not sorry. Meh.

I like the gorillaz hit songs but was not a fan of this album for the most part

It was OK. Probably groundbreaking at the time. Lots of different sounds.

How many Damon Albarn records do I need to listen to before I die? Surely I’ve heard enough. Please . . . Pretty Please let this be the last one.

2 out of 5. It's been years since I've listened to this album but it's more lackluster than I remember.

Not my type of music. Really repetitive and nothing to look for.

Clint Eastwood carries this album 🙌

This one was hard to rate, because apart from a few absolute bangers, this album was shit.

Messy, couldn’t decide what genre it wanted to be. Clint Eastwood the only standout track.

not one I liked very much

There is something a little bit awkward about this music. I know a lot of people LOVE the Gorillaz, but it comes off as cringe to be and doesn't do anything wild to my music radar. I would rather listen to good hip hop OR good rock, not both in a mush. 3/10

Unknown band for me. Not quite the type of R&R I like but listenable. An OK album.

I’ve never really enjoyed Gorillaz so didn’t have high expectations for this and it was pretty much what I expected. Background music. Not a very big fan at all. Much prefer Blur. Eh.

I still don’t get it…

This fell very flat for me. Aside from the well-known songs, I wasn't interested in much else. The spacey feel was fun, though!

I Got Sunshine In A Bag 1001 Albums Generator 30 (05/14/2025) Gorillaz is the debut album by virtual band/art project of Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett of the same name. Albarn and Hewlett met during the former's days with Blur and the idea of Gorillaz as a band made of four fictional members came to them as a commentary on what they felt like were "manufactured bands" pushed by MTV during the boy band craze of the 90's. Although the band was created in the late 90's, their first album did not release until 2001. A quite eclectic album (similar to what Blur did on their self-titled), Gorillaz features influences from trip hop, hip hop, alt rock, and psychedelia. Do these influences come together in a cohesive way throughout this relatively lengthy album? Well, I need to be honest. I feel like I'm missing something with this one. It seems to be well loved but to me it feels as though many of these songs are completely forgettable. Of course, in such a long album, there are bound to be some great moments. The two biggest hits, Clint Eastwood and 19-2000, are both popular for a reason, especially Clint Eastwood. Del The Funky Homosapien from legendary abstract hip hop group Deltron 3030 does the verses here and they are fantastic. This song also features its iconic chorus and almost cabaret-like piano beat, which extends out instrumentally for the last minute or so. It is really great. I thought 19-2000 was a little annoying the first time I heard it with its silly little synthline, but it's grown on me. Unfortunately, these are pretty much the two best songs here. Other light highlights include the Afro-Cuban jazz inspired Latin Simone (which got me really in the mood to listen to Dizzy Gillespie's Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods (which should totally be on the list btw, it's a perfect album)). Anyway, Latin Simone features Spanish lyrics and a cool droning background instrumental with jazz stuff happening on top of it. Sound Check (Gravity) has a pretty heavy, psychedelic trip hop beat that has some interesting production, although at times it feels like it's all form and no substance. This may honestly be an accurate criticism of the album as a whole. Besides the few songs that I've brought up, a lot of these songs, even with their eclectic styles and production, go in one ear and out the other, or worse. Man Research (Clapper) is really annoying with its consistent whining vocals and Punk could be seen as an interesting change of pace, but to me, it feels extremely out of place. Songs like Double Bass, Starshine, and Slow Country, while all quite different from one another, do not have any aspects that stuck with me on any level deeper than the occassional "oh that was an interesting sound". Favs: Clint Eastwood 19-2000 Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo) Least Fav: Man Research (Clapper)

Meh, Plastic Beach and Demon Days are better. The only decent song on this album is Clint Eastwood

Favorite track: Clint Eastwood. Overall score: 3.6/10

I never really "got" Gorillaz. Still don't. Most of the songs just sound like throwaway demos to me, aside from a couple catchy singles. Also way too damn long.

I was really looking forward to this one. Ended up quite disappointed. Clint Eastwood is one of my favorite rap songs of all time. Great beat, great rap, love it. The rest of the album really fell flat. Most of the songs were either boring with the same thing repeated over and over, or just hard to understand what they were saying. Rock The House had some good rap too, and Latin Simone had great music. The rest of the tracks were all duds. I want to rate this album higher just because of Clint Eastwood, but the rest of it was a slog. Best song: Clint Eastwood

Pretty decent, a couple of bops but more semi boring songs. I liked the experimental bits but it seemed like too much of the album was made up of this and what felt like interludes. Probably would not listen to the whole album again, just the few bops. 2 stars

Damn, I was so skeptical of M1 A1 at first, but it just started rocking SO HARD, oh my gosh. This album has been super back and forth for me so far. I really, really liked Slow Country. A couple songs that I wasn’t a big fan of when they came on. Maybe not the best album to listen to front-to-back, feels like one you just pick a few songs from that you like, but it’s not necessarily one collective storyline or style. Definitely a LOT of variety, which I think Gorillaz is known for. The Spanish song also caught me by surprise but was super cool! And then I chided myself for being surprised because this is Gorillaz hahhahaha. The Suzuki Method song was pretty cool, too, I guess. Excited for this last Clint Eastwood. Alrighty so looking back on it, Re-Hash was really good—I think it’s a spoof on Song 2, right? But of course even better. I don’t know, overall quite a bit of fun, but also some drags. Probably a 2 out of 5 as of right now. It does feel as though it might grow on me, however. :))

Not as good as I remember

After this hits, kind of weak. Little disappointed.

This was an album that I, for some reason, avoided as a child/teen. I think they were “popular” and I liked “real music” (70s musicians with drug issues). Listening to it now, it’s wild how many of these songs were baked into the recesses of my mind despite my avoidance. Robby tried to tell me about the Gorillaz lore. I looked it up on Wikipedia. It’s a very creative idea! I’m glad I listened to it. Ultimately it’s not for me, but I appreciate its existence.

Does nothing for me

Tomorrow Comes Today Clint Eastwood 19/2000

I only knew this because of the song, "Clint Eastwood." No idea what was going on, except it was made by Damon Albarn and that I was super tired of that track as a single. Also, this was a time when I was way out of touch with music, so I had no idea it was a made-up band and was only in cartoon form. Hearing the rest of the album, it feels like an uneasy mix of hiphop tracks and dub reggae. The melodica, echo effects, etc. Seeing that Dan the Automator was a part of this makes a lot more sense. Way less hip hop that Handsome Boy Modeling School, but definitely in Dan's wheelhouse. It's fine - I don't think it's completely successful, but it isn't as bad as Hail To the Thief. I'd love to hear DJ Format or Pete Rock remix “Rock The House” That was the best song on the album in my opinion. And it reminded me that I should listen to more King Tubby and other dub reggae artists. So two stars for the two Del tracks and Dan the Automator

Saved by the Del…from 1 Star. Maybe innovative at the time but bored me nearly to death 24 years later.

This album is so overrated. From Wikipedia: "...the album incorporates an eclectic mix of stylistic influences, including trip hop, dub, Latin and punk rock." I can make a casserole out of hot dogs, chocolate chips, sour cream, ranch dressing, green peas, and ice cream, but that doesn't mean that I should or that it'll be good. 2 stars only because of Del Tha Funky Homosapien on "Clint Eastwood."

I'd give this one star but it had Clint Eastwood. 1.5/5. Rounding up to 2.

- artstylen er amaze - litt kjedelig musikk. Beatsa og lyrikken treffer ikke godt.

Very hit or miss. The good ones are great, the others made my workout more painful than it had to be.

Mainly dull

I'd forgotten how bad this album was.

well that sucked a lot harder than i remember, at least we're safe until a blur album inevitably appears

That`s not my thing!

Clint Eastwood is the only decent song

Yawn. A visual gimmick does not equate to good listening.

Rap, 2001 -> 2

Først og fremst irriterande

With exception of 19-2000 (and to my surprise, I must confess!), I found this album quite boring :-( Giving it a 2, because boring is not the same as bad, IMHO, and there were a few good ideas here, we can tell

Kind of just souless which makes sense I guess. This is a musical project that produced some moments, but as far as album strength their pretty weak.

Non fa per me, a parte Clint Eastwood

2 good tracks.

A couple of great tracks (remixes are even better) but average at best

The singles were everywhere in 2001, so much so that I refused to listen to this album then. And I guess that was a valid proposition. A lot of the tracks feel like filler working out ideas that would probably be better done in future Gorillaz tracks.

3.5 out of 10.

there's a fine between chill and boring

I think the marketing and universe created around this is much more interesting than the actual music.

One long album. One good song.

All over the shop. Look behind the hype and there's little of substance. 2/5.

What the fuck was that? I was unprepared. Put me back in my high school buddy’s older brothers room smoking pot to his dj mix

Confession that I did not make it through this one. Not feeling it.

I actually read Dad’s review before submitting mine - and I fully agree. Clint Eastwood is obviously amazing but the rest of this album dragged on by… This doesn’t hold a candle to Demon Days or even the recent Song Machine album. Boring like some of the Blur stuff.

This hip-hop electronica isn’t really my cup of tea. Although there are good things in it, it’s not what I like.

Holy shit was this hard to get through lmao. First half had some solid songs like 5/4, Clint Eastwood, and rock the house. Other than those songs this was some boring ass music. I like gorillas next album demon days so I was expecting a lot more from this than I got. 2.1/5 Fav song: Clint Eastwood

Is this the same Gorillaz that made Feels Good Inc?

first exposure to this band outside of feel good inc and am a little disappointed. This felt very hit and miss

I'm a big Blur fan but hadn't ever heard this album apart from the hits. Listening to it now, I'm not in love at all. Clearly Damon was done with Blur and wanted just to sit in the background and twiddle some knobs. But the hip hop elements just drag it down.

This entire album is the sonic equivalent of Damon Albarn walking around the British Museum of History and thinking “wow, I can’t believe we did all of this.” Two stars.

Some good stuff but 19-2000 Soulchild Remix is and forever will be the only thing I return to from this. And it’s not on the original release so have to factor that in.

Massive Attack com preguiça

Some of the later Gorillaz stuff I enjoy, but this one has never appealed to me, and a relisten hasn't changed anything. The songs are varied in genre, but consistently tepid. "19-2000" is the outlier, with "get the cool shoe shine" bumping round my mind intermittently over the past ~25 years.

Pre: If you're gonna choose 1 Gorillaz album you'd choose Demon Days but okay sure let's go back to the beginning. I think I remember having this CD but I don't think it was played often since I can only recall the two hits. It'll be interesting to come back to it after getting more into Del and Handsome Boy Modelling School though. Post: A lot of the songs here are kinda rippers until Damon starts singing and then everything kinda lowers to about 50% fullness. Like on M1 A1, the instrumental is quite good until we get to the vocals and then everything strips back slightly but in my opinion not for the better. I don't think I have an issue with Damon's singing usually but it's interesting how it sounds a bit work-in-progress here and got better with later Gorillaz releases despite all of Blur preceeding this. It's interesting to see where a lot of the Gorillaz later stuff comes from but most of this album felt like filler or at least as something of a first step towards later work. Clint Eastwood and 19-2000 are still great but they are adrift amongst the rest of this. Highlight: 19-2000 (Specifically not the remix because I've had arguments about which is better before and I'd like this codified here)

2.5 Del the Funky Homosapien is by far my favourite part of this album, unfortunately he's only on 2 songs.

Starts off fine.. But after "Punk" it just one funky jam of nothingness after another. Sounds like they were having fun though. (5.6) ★★½

Boring and tedious. Some of my least favourite styles mixed together. I like "Clint Eastwood" though. 2 stars

Its ok. Much worse than I remeber. Concept might have ben cool bit wore off pretty fast and didnt held up. 2 good singls and a lot of crappy stuff. Its like yoko ono but more relaxed.

Fuzz pop/rock - meh

Meh. I was never a fan of the Gorillaz when they emerged in the early 2000s (man do I feel old). I get that they were trying to do something fairly left field in a music scene that was very much pop dominated (what a time to be alive, personally) but I just don't really like the sound they came up with. Not for me, I'd rather have Blur

This was not as good as I thought it would be. I'd always liked Clint Eastwood, so I was thinking I'd enjoy the rest of this album. Nope. I found it boring and tedious and immature; and after listening to this entire album, I don't think I like Clint Eastwood as much as I once did.

Boring, the Cartoon Network has a better soundtrack

Highlights: Rock the House, M1 A1. In a nutshell: new millennium aesthetic A virtual band was a unique concept in 2001. It has some nice beats, the loops bored me quickly. The album versions of Clint Eastwood and 19-2000 are suprisingly sluggish. M1 A1 reminded me of Autobahn (no pun intended). The book had to include the debut but I'm wondering if Demon Days or Plastic Beach should be on the list too as a point of comparison. Overall: 4/10

"Now he's making lots of noise/Playing along with the art school boys" Kevin can fuck off, and so can this pretentious bollocks. Boring. Just like Subbuteo

3/10 - It was extremely strange and not that good. I had heard Clint Eastwood before but it was not the best. In the later songs it seems like they gave instruments to people who had never played them and said go off.

Clint Eastwood was good. Everything else was incredibly mid.

I like about 3 songs on this album but they’re not like AMAZING. And the bad songs are real bad, so I gotta give this one a 2/5

"I'm sure Clint Eastwood would like [the song]. He's an intelligent man." - Damon Albarn

Never have given these guys a real listen before. Found out I haven't missed much. Couple good tracks here but mostly meandering filler with seemingly no cohesion or purpose. Some are outright tiresome and/or annoying.

A few really interesting songs. Just felt a bit lacking overall.

That song is called Clint Eastwood!

Re-Hash: I like the guitar and the calm aesthetic, weird production but ties together well, I liked the second half po-po-po-po-po’s. It’s the money or stop, it’s the money or stop. Oooh record scratch. 5/4: Oh damn the guitar. SHE TURNED MY DAD ON DAD ON DAD ON. I wonder what happened on May 4th, Star Wars reference?? Ya this song was fine I guess, it was aight. She made me kill myself was a little cringe but I can get over it, I’m picking and choosing here. Tomorrow Comes Today: I like that like bass in the background, idk how I feel about like that one instrument like bagpipe sounding aaah. His ass ain’t paying if he’s waiting for tomorrow to come today imo. Cool chill song, it was aight it was aight. New Genius (Brother): He killed some guy. I’m kinda getting a slower like one hand hanging off the steering wheel after a long day of work and it’s foggy and humid out type vibe off this album so far. This song was good. Clint Eastwood: ITS THIS SONG. When I was scrolling through the song list on the album this was the only song I was like, I might know this one. It’s coming on, it’s coming on, it’s coming on, it’s coming on. I’m a sucker for simple low keys in the background… mmmm mmmm. It did not need that last 2 minutes let’s be real. Overall I get why this is known, good song, first song on the album with memorable meaningful lyrics. Man Research (Clapper): Did I just get abducted? This guy loves this falsetto. Cool background sounds and effects, I like the background vocals in the second half, wish that was brought out a bit more and complimented with better lyrical execution. But half of the song is yuh yuh yuh yuh yuh. I guess cool but not worth a second listen, this is a skip :( Punk: yup I get the title of the song. This is fun. Not a full song, not my vibe but maybe I’ll get into it one day. This is… a skip :( Sound Check (Gravity): I didn’t like the beginning til that record scratch into the main beat of the song… GYAT DAMN stank face production mmmmm. Is that a fucking cello. Woah back to that falsetto gravity y y y y y y, I like the strings in the background. That gravity y y y y y is much better layered with his lower voice imo. Ya idk what he was saying in this song but it was good. Double Bass: Nah man, I know you love your granddaughters art project and all but I’m not putting it on my fridge type shit. Not for me. This is bad. Omg and some fucking British bloke in the middle of the song to make it even worse. This is a skip :( Rock the House: Woah idk if you’re on Spotify but this lil guys a lil loose in the legs, look at that thrust. Omg this guys vocals are fun. I WANT YALL TO JUST GET DOWN. Tell me how this kids recorder skills are better than all the instrumentals in the last song. A TRUMPET?? Gravitational pull?? Callback to Sound Check (Gravity)?? I’m getting a trend here, whenever this rapper gets on a track I like it a decent amount better, him combo with a good beat and nice production is peak for me so far. This guy love booty. This was a GREAT song for me. 19-2000: Immediately hit with more of that weird beep boop boop beep SpongeBob. Stop dancing to the music of GORILLAZ in a happy mood. BAND NAME DROP. Oh and this girl that’s on the album cover is getting frontline lyric time. Ok ok. I really like that downward vocal scale mmmm so smooth. Don’t love the SpongeBob beep boop boop beep main beat, I think it takes away from the song but I get the wacky vibe they’re aiming for, just not my thing. But a pretty good song. Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo): Omg Spanish woah, I did not see this coming. Wow, I’m super curious if Spanish is used on any of their other albums. Love that trumpet god damn. So far not my favorite song, but I actually really like the production. ¿QUE PASA? This song was aight. Starshine: This better build up into something please. I’m not liking the chances here of it building to anything. Nope nothing here. This is a bad song. This is a skip :( Slow Country: I like the keys but wtf is this shit in the background?? This shit in the background is horrible, this like static stuff. I can’t, omg I love like the keys and the other effects, but that background static completely ruins the song for me. This is a skip :( M1 A1: Woah is this from a movie or something? Is anyone there? Hello??? Wth. Build up build up, getting louder getting louder. Ok so is anyone down there? Oh those DRUMS. YUH YUH M1 A1. GORILLAZ GOT THE BASS DRUM UH. This would be a fun song to see live, terrible first half of the song but super fun second half. Unfortunately with my logic, I skip songs in the car if it’s bad in the first half, so EVEN THO I LIKE THE SONG… (controversial I know but…) it is a skip :( Dracula: Back to that weird instrument idk the name of, maybe it’s just keys and I’m stupid. Is that a low saxophone?? Oh damn I like the instrumentals here. A slower song but definitely one of their better slow simple songs. I liked this one. Again, what’s with the last 2 minutes here? Left Hand Suzuki Method: Oh we off the bong right away. I’m getting abducted again. Oh damn loud rich bass punches you in the face. Uh the most important thing is listening to the music or something. She claims it gets to the point of fast progress and yet that doesn’t happen in half of these songs… ok. This is a bad song… this is a skip :( Clint Eastwood: WHAT? Again??? It’s a something something ting.’ Oh they riding off this song. Make ya move your feet. Ya that’s a fun song, but tbh I’m not listening to this over the other Clint Eastwood. And actually it’s not really my thing. This is a skip :( FINAL IMPRESSIONS: Ya the first half of this album pulls. I know it if I re-listened to this thing I’d like the first half a lot more than my original thoughts. A lot more skips than I had expected especially with the beginning vibe of the album. I listened to every song in full, so if it’s a skip I did not miss out on everything (aka it doesn’t mean I skipped the song while listening to it). I have heard the Gorillaz before, I am fairly confident that this is not their best work, and I’m assuming they expanded and hit their highs. So to boil it down to it, there are 1001 albums I should listen to before I die, idk if it’s just me, but I could have died without listening to this one. This is a 2/5 for me… maybe it’ll grow on me. But 8 skips is a lot for an album.

Overall I dont like it that much. Some songs were ok.

3/5 wouldn't listen again good a bit goes awry in some places but overall this was a great first attempt for them but falls flat on ladder half

Albarn at his most annoying. Despite many attempts I’ve just never enjoyed this album.

Quite a slog to get through. The most milquetoast rapping I've ever heard on album. A few songs are quite nice and there are some nice parts to even the boring tracks that save it from a 1, but its not something I'm gonna visit again. I found the 2 remixes tacked on at the end more interesting than the songs on the album itself.

I never listened to this album fully, but with how good Clint Eastwood is here, I was excited and figured I'd enjoy most tracks here. But really, after I finished it, I can't say I really liked anything else. Shocks me to say that this is surprisingly an album that you really aren't missing anything by just listening to the hit.

1 good song on their that's alright. Rest of them are like weird drugged up shit...

I had only heard a couple of Gorillaz songs in the past. This album started out likable. After Clint Eastwood it lost its way. Some songs were so unpleasant I skipped them. I will just stick with their singles.

This was fine. Kind of boring. Didn't do much! This was everywhere when I was younger, but I didn't recognise any songs outside of Clint Eastwood. I don't feel I really missed out. It's interesting to consider if I might really like this if I'd have got into it way back when it came out. Probably! I quite like Lemon Jelly which has some overlap with this. It's also amazing how far back this came out, in relative terms. 23 years ago! When I was 15!? That can't be right. But it is.

Weak album imo

1-4 kinda boring Man Research has some catchy “ya ya yas” Punk is a fun short bop Sound Check could be decent high, could use a second listen

werde irgendwie nicht warm mit der platte, obschon der sound eigentlich cool ist. tja, musik ist manchmal sehr geschmackssache.

They really made the music they wanted to see in the world.

沒有聽懂😭😭😭😭 沒聽到結束就關掉了三小啦

Fun. Simple. Sophomoric.

Mostly dull and boring for me

Honestly just find this so boring. Always have, probably always will. No matter how many times I try to get into it, it just bores the life out of me. Damon Albarn is just so tedious.

It's not for me

The only little highlight is "Clint Eastwood". The rest of the album are only filler or even sucker for me. 1,5

I like Gorillaz, but I don’t love Gorillaz. There are parts of different songs on this particular album that I really enjoyed and then something would happen in the song and I would change my mind.
