I read somewhere that Neil wanted Side B to go first so that's how I listened. 3 of the most boring songs I've heard from NY... thankfully saved by Side A, somewhat.

Neil Young is quite a talent but nothing here that grabbed me and made me want to listen again.

Neil Young once told me that a man can eat all the pussy he wants, but at the end of the day, it's the pussy the man came out of that really matters. That struck a chord with me and it's why I started regularly going down on my own mother. She's been dead 14 years and still tastes wonderful.

Love Neil Young. Always liked the folky throwback on For The Turnstiles. Not his strongest work but still good.

neil young thinks he can pull a fast one on me! i've gotten a handful of young albums so far: solo, csny, and him with crazy horse. i still wouldn't call myself a neil young fan, but thank goodness we have an album of his that was a nice listen. but did neil young think that i wouldn't realize on the beach is a pleasant listen?! where has this neil young been! on this album, young uses folk rock not in a brash way but in more of an easy listening way. his harmonica is not grating. it's a mellow kind of album, which makes sense when he dipped his toe into the blues. i might not be a huge fan of his vocals but i can tolerate it well enough. "vampire blues" is a cute, tongue-in-cheek song, which is an unfamiliar feeling (for me) with neil young. i enjoyed his lyrics here in general. but "motion pictures" was the one, however simple it might appear, was crafted to be simple but grabbing. "see the sky about to rain" was not about actual nature, but rather life's ups and downs for everybody, especially anticipating a negative event. "walk on" must be the most personal song of the album. "i remember the good old days/[...]/but we still did the best we could."

The best Neil Young I have heard to date, only a few songs where his voice was over whiney.

Wasn't into it at first but it grew on me as I went along. It's an interesting album, at times it's almost like psychedelic country music which is something I can get behind. Not the biggest fan of Neils voice but it is quite soothing at times. Favourite song: Vampire Blues.

Well I can’t say that album justifies its place on the list, but it was certainly entertaining. He has some really nice songs in there, just not very original or inspiring or having range. 3/5

Maybe my favorite Neil Young album so far? This really does feel like sitting on the beach. Neil Young works best when he goes for simplicity like this - uncomplicated songs that come from a man simply making music for himself. Standouts are the title track and Walk On.

I have to listen to this with an open mind. I'm not a fan of Neil Young's vocals, but I thinks there's supposed to be something to the lyrics so I'll be fair in listening to them. Walk On - I like the music, lyrics average, vocals what I expected. 6/10 See the Sky About to Rain - Music average, lyrics average, vocals a bit better. 5/10 Revolution Blues - The music is average with a few high points in the instrumental sections. Lyrics are pretty good, but I don't think I'm getting the intended message. Vocals are ok. 6/10 For the Turnstiles - Starts with a bluegrass sound, lyrics ok, vocals ok. 4/10 Vampire Blues - Starts with an actual blues sound - pretty good, lyrics directed at the oil industry - still an issue today, so I'm getting into this one. Vocals have a more blues-y sound. 8/10 On the Beach - Music is mellow and very pleasant. Lyrics are meaningful and feel the emotions. The vocals are very fitting with the music and tone of the song. Best part of the song is the blues-driven solo. Overall sound is the best I've heard so far. 9/10 Motion Pictures - Nice sound, lyrics ok, vocals ok. 6/10 Ambulance Blues - music is very nice; lyrics appear to have significant meaning, some are clear while others are vague; vocals are nice, I think they are growing on me so that's something. 7/10 The album starts kinda meh. As it progresses, it feels more meaningful. I may listen to a couple of these again, but I don't feel particularly inspired by the album as a whole.

Joe Rogan somehow means I can’t listen

I liked this record a decent amount. I like Neil’s voice even though not every song clicked with me. Want to check out more of his work. AM came in clutch since it wasn’t on Spotify.

I thought I would Neil Young but his voice grates after a while. Highlight on this album is For the Turnstiles for me for the laid back folky arrangement.

Another Neil Young album, that sounds like Neil Young. While the lyrics might be foreboding and desolate and despairing, the music itself is easy to listen to in his inimitable style. Again though, it isn't enough to really have me coming back for me. When it came to rating this as an album you must hear before you die, I feel as though this one is more one to listen to in order to make you feel depressed. It's fine, but not one I'd have been disappointed with if I had never heard it either.

Similar to Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde - I could easily forget that I listened to this album. It's fine in the background, nothing special.

I suppose it's okay, but I'm really starting to lose my patience for American men with harmonica.

My mom loves Crosby, Stills, and Nash and not really the addition of Young so I don't really know a lot about his music. I think my favorite song was Revolution Blues, there was just something about the instrumental that I really liked. I feel like Neil Young is a pretty good singer, I don't love his style but it's obvious there's some kind of talent there whether it's natural or learned. I also really enjoyed Vampire Blues, just the second I heard the guitar intro I was into it.

I like Neil Young in small doses apparently. Like the banana taffy of musicians, it's good but nobody wants to chew on 8 pieces at once. Song hilights: Rebel Blues and On the Beach.

Despite him being a pretentious pratt who was smacked out on drugs most of his life, I quite enjoy the sound of Neil Young and his tends toward acoustic arrangements, a lot of which are engrained in my DNA from a childhood of listening to Neil, The Doors, Bowie, Paul Wellar and David Sylvian. Not my favourite album of his, much prefer Harvest or After the Gold Rush. This album wanderingly drifts along in different directions a little bit more than Neil's usual trademark style, to the point where I found a couple of the tracks just plain boring and did hit the skip button halfway through. It's still a good middle of the road album.

While it's possible there is an excessive amount of Neil Young on the list, I didn't mind this album. The plonking bass and ragged guitar sits well with his plaintive voice

Alright let’s cut to the chase. The music deserves a 5. Neil Young’s voice deserves a 1. We settle at a 3. Happy?

If Neil Young started his career in today’s world, he would be the SoundCloud rapper from your high school that everyone makes fun of. His voice is akin to a poorly-circumcised cat. I genuinely think I have a better singing voice than him, and that’s saying something. It pains me to give this a 3, but I gotta be impartial here and it’s pretty good musically. It’s a bottom of the barrel 3, but a 3 nonetheless. Also, I finally met the legendary Woofmeow and it was my greatest achievement as a reviewer. All I can do is try to inspire the next generation like she does.

This album almost rose above the bad will I have toward it since it isn't on Spotify and I have to use YouTube but at the end of the day it was some good but not super memorable folk music. Not quite enough to get above the average 3 for a non-Spotify album

I liked it, I had a good time! I heard a vinyl rip of it, as Neil would have wanted. come to think of it, Neil probably doesn’t want me to hear a version of this album that isn’t direct vinyl. Nothing really stood out up re-visiting, but I’m open to putting it on again. His mix of melancholy is always home-y to me. It didn’t have the same effect on me as Harvest. But I had a good time!

I've never heard any songs off this album previously. Overall it was a good folk rock album.

"On the Beach" was the best song. The rest was a very easy listen, but nothing to get excited about.

I won't lie, I rolled my eyes when I saw I got another Neil Young album. However, I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't make me want to pack my ear canals with cement. It was actually kind of nice and I didn't mind it.

Womp, womp. Joe Rogan ruined my Neil Young experience on Spotify. ... and, now two years later, I'm cleaning up these forgotten reviews and Neil Young and Joe Rogan are all hunky dory. Which sucks. I was hoping I wouldn't have to endure Neil Young's falsettos for 39 mins. Neil Young is this champion of the small person. His Bridge School concerts are legendary. He supports farmers and was willing to put his streaming royalties on hold after Spotify signed an exclusive deal with Joe Rogan who was spreading misinformation about COVID. He was an original member of CSN(Y) and there are plenty of respectable musicians that hold him in high regard. Neil Young did the soundtrack to one of my favorite Jim Jarmusch movies, Dead Man. It was eerie and sparse and fit perfectly within the black and white film. It is impeccable. I wouldn't say I have a love/hate relationship with Neil Young's music. I guess it's more of a like/dislike relationship relationship. Doesn't really send me to emotional highs or lows. Because I like a lot of Young's work. Just sticking with the solo work, and ignoring all of the group drama that preceded it, Young has been very influential, written some terrific songs, and built an amazingly solid career around a distinctly worse-than-average voice. Despite Young's deserved accolades of songwriting, I didn't quite know what to make of some of these. A dune buggy revolution? Vampires? Radio interviews?

I’ve listened to this album nearly three times and I’m still having a difficult time formulating a cohesive summary. My enjoyment as a function of track number would definitely show a downward trend as the album moves on. I’m with Ivey that the Wurlitzer piano and steel guitar sound great on See The Sky About To Rain. Walk On might be my favorite song on the album. I dig the harmonies and banjo lead on For The Turnstiles. Vampire Blues is an odd sounding slam against Big Oil. The harmonica/guitar solo interplay on Motion Picture (For Carrie) sounds like a bad take that they powered through. And there is Neil’s voice. Not classically good, but he knows how to use it, most of the time. The back half of the album leaves Neil’s voice sounding thin too often. This album is worth hearing and I’d listen again, but I’m likely to skip side 2 unless I’m in the right mood.

Solid set of tunes, but nothing that got me out of my chair.

Sedate, unhurried. Certainly not uplifting. Probably pretty good for tea and a book on the couch, but not so good for a drive down to mom's house.

Best Song: On the Beach. The guitar solo that makes up the bulk of the middle of this song is excellent. Worst Song: Revolution Blues. Young's voice just isn't cut out to sing the blues. Overall: I can never decide whether/how much I like Neil Young. His voice is always teetering on the edge of annoying, but it also has moments of possessing this sort of haunting beauty. I wish he stayed further away from trying to be a rock star and gravitated more towards a Willie Nelson, or even an Elliot Smith aesthetic.

Listening to this is like gazing across still waters on a winters day, lost in your own thoughts, with your hot drink gone cold at your elbow. The furnishings are out of date and there is a musty smell but its still homely.

This is a good Neil Young album. Which is to say it’s got some really great songs and some really monotonous ones. I’m certain he has other films on the list. Will they be better?

The first Neil Young album to come up in my journey, suspect I may feel similarly about all of them but we'll see. Have never particularly got Neil Young, despite following lots of artists and bands who sing his praises to the moon. Generally, all nice and good for a Sunday afternoon but it just doesn't grab my attention.

Vamos a Tidal que esto ya no está en Spotify. En principio me gusta más la portada que el disco. Me gustaron "Vampire Blues", "Motion Pictures (For Carrie)" y "Ambulance Blues".

This seems like an odd item to select from Young’s catalog (though that’s partly a factor of his over-representation on this list, my now tired refrain on the thing). Though it’s certainly a notable artifact of its times, with more baroque elements like the Manson connection (drawing a coincidental line to the Recent Beach Boys selection that came up for me there), I think there’s a reason that only Walk On and For The Turnstiles from this made it into the Decade compilation. The longer pieces have interest but don’t rise to that sprawling, psychedelic-country epic quality of Cowgirl in the Sand or Down by the River.

I've got a few Neil Young albums in my collection mostly because (a) I like his music well enough, and (b) he is highly regarded. There are a lot of serious music lovers out there who adore this man's music, even going so far as to say he is the voice of a generation and that his albums are the best of their time. I wouldn't go that far, but I do sense there is more to Mr. Young than I've yet discovered. Every once in a while one of his songs really grabs me. The eponymous track on this album does. "I need a crowd of people, but I can't face them day to day." Although this isn't a state of mind I can personally identify with, I know a lot of people who feel this way, so I try to sympathize. As for me, I learned long ago that people just ain't no good. I avoid them whenever possible.

Our fourth Neil Young album. Turns out Neil Young really is all about his couple of great hits. Albums that don't have any of them, like this one, are just a collection of "it's alright I guess".

That's a real shame - I was pleasantly surprised at the start of the album, as I am not a Neil Young fan. The first three tracks were really good, but it got very mediocre after. As a side note: Neil Young is much better when he has a band backing him (like here), compared to there being only him with his guitar and harmonica. 2.5/5

On the other hand, "For the Turnstiles" was genuinely awful. That's the only bad song though, the rest is just fine. Nothing I would willingly listen to, but I wouldn't turn it off if it started playing on Spotify shuffle. OH WAIT

Neil is a good man and this was a good album. It didn't exactly take me to the beach, but I'd be glad to listen to it if I was there. I particularly liked See the Sky about to Rain, again, not quite what you want at the beach.

It's Neil Young, but he's on the beach. I don't know if this is core Neil Young or not, but I enjoy the style for what it is. Reminds me of Kurt Vile, who's no doubt inspired by Mr. Young. I appreciate the long, hypnotic tracks on here. I'd definitely put this ahead of the previous NY album that we received. Favorite tracks: For the Turnstiles, On the Beach, Ambulance Blues. The world seems to want me to listen to Neil Young so badly, and I want just as badly to never listen to Neil Young ever again. It's not bad. In fact, in a lot of ways its good music. It's just that Neil Young is a fucking bummer, and I don't need it. Neil Young is the type of person who goes to the beach to complain about the sand. 3/5 (again, it's not bad, it just makes me feel like life is not worth living)

This is classic Neil Young. I love how sloppy and under-produced it is. How can something so bad be so good? I don’t know, but I dig it.

I feel like there’s a lot of Neil Young on this list? I was pleasantly surprised by this one though - more bluesy and funk influences than I expected.

This is an album I should give another try, and on a beach. Listening to it in the heart of São Paulo didn’t seem the best option for a first trial, but I like it.

This is a Neil Young album I've never heard. My go to albums are after the gold rush and harvest, with others thrown in. This one I've somehow ignored, so far. I'm glad this one is on my list cause it's solid early-ish Neil Young. Probably won't become a staple in my rotation, but a worthy album for sure. They can't all be bangers, I s'pose.

Carrie Snodgrass. That's a blast from the past. Ambulance Blues stands up with the best of Young's work. I got this on CD not long after it had (finally) been re-released. It was already been discounted heavily, which was a surprise. At first. If (a huge counterfactual here) Youtube had been around a decade earlier, would this record have attained a cult status? I think not. It's not quite the digression from the commerciality (bestowed retrospectively) of Harvest, it's a rather middling endeavour. But scarcity created a sense of value.

Первое отчетливо слышно на Motion pictures, второе - на For the Turnstiles. Ну и разумеется не обошлось без блюза с классическим словом «blues» в названиях песен. Местами музыка заставляет скучать, иногда завораживает. То стремится в небо, то упирается в землю. Это, как по мне, главная проблема альбома. Он, несмотря на общие ретроспективные мотивы, не воспринимается как единый альбом. Walk On заряжает позитивом, ты попадаешь на пляж, думаешь о людях вокруг, мечтаешь. И тут все внезапно обрывается, ты оказываешься посреди пасмурного пейзажа и смотришь в небо, из которого скоро прольётся дождь. Музыку бросает из стороны в сторону. При этом песню Ambulance Blues можно заносить в список моих любимых песен. Музыкально это фолк, причём довольно замороченный. Но то, как на музыку ложится вокал - удивительно. Кто бы мог подумать, что можно сделать девятиминутную фолк-песню, которую будешь слушать на одном дыхании. О ЧЕМ: В текстах разброс примерно такой же, как в музыке. На Walk On Янг совмещает свой цинизм с желанием двигаться дальше и жить в своё удовольствие. Лучше всего это видно в строчках: «Люди не замечают счастливых времён. Они заняты своим делом, я - своим». Очень интересная мысль. Лирический герой только подмечает, что людям вокруг было бы гораздо легче жить, если бы они перестали идти на поводу у общества и стали бы делать то, чего им действительно хочется. Он это замечает, но тут же оговаривается, что не собирается никому указывать, что им делать и как чувствовать. «Они заняты своим делом, а я своим». На Revolution blues не обошлось без влияния Чарльза Мэнсона. После чего нас ждёт милое кантри, где Янг весело бренчит на бонго. В этом весь альбом. Есть ещё песня, в которой Янг говорит, что он вампир, сосущий кровь, что является циничным уколом в сторону топливной индустрии. Motion Pictures о любви, отношениях и на этом все. Классика. Главной песней на пластинке, по моему мнению является завершающая альбом Ambulance blues. Песня уходит в ретроспективный взгляд уже опытного музыканта на пройденный путь. Песня описывает чувства Янга по отношению к критике, Ричарду Никсону и состоянию квартета CSNY, в котором он в то время состоял. Эта песня сочетает в себе великую музыку и подходящий текст, который не внедряется в песню, а аккуратно ложится новым слоем, погружая тебя все глубже и глубже в свои мысли и чувства. ИТОГ: Если музыка заставляет человека задуматься о себе, взглянуть на себя изнутри, даже если это одна песня, это уже огромный плюс пластинке. Парадоксально, что циник и нигилист создал альбом, из которого трудно вынести что-то, кроме конструктива и осознанности. Видно, что творец себя не сдерживал, и хорошо, что так. Decent not something normally listen too.

Seems like Neil had fun making this album, and just tossed it together in a few days. The lyrics seem to be letting a lot of despair out in a therapeutic way, and the musicianship is top notch throughout. No real standout tracks but the album is solid throughout.

I was expecting great things from Neil Young's "On the Beach", as I find that "After the Gold Rush" is a terrific record. After listening to this one, I am convinced that it lacks what I appreciated most on his previous attempt. Honestly, I find most tracks to be unengaging, with simplistic melodies and, at times, boring. Walk On, See the Sky and Revolution Blues are pretty good tracks, but it mostly ends there. As for For the Turnstiles, I find that Young's singing is ragged and truly awful. Vampire Blues and On the Beach are way too long and sleep-inducing, Motion Pictures is OK and Ambulance Blues drags on for 3 minutes too long. In conclusion, a 3 is barely warranted.

I mean it’s ok. That pretty much sums this album up for me...and also pretty much any other by Neil Young. Very good song writer obviously, but lyrics only create an impact when they find an angle to relate or they are accompanied by music that’s exciting and heightens an emotion in the listener. I’m yet to experience either of those phenomenons whilst listening to Neil Young’s music...and this album didn't change that. I do understand the appeal for others though and this album is more than listenable, which is why I’m not it rating too harshly. 3 Stars!

Pretty unremarkable

I love Neil Young. I’m not a huge fan of this album. His biting satire and indignation are largely missing, leaving an album that just feels tired. Not in the “old hat” way, but, rather, like he’s tired of trying to fight or speak out. It’s more poppy and less daring, which goes against what I think of when I think of Neil Young. Sure, Vampire Blues has the sentiment I expect in his music, but even that felt…off. Like his heart wasn’t in it the same way as Southern Man or Ohio. It felt so off, I had to recheck the release date because I was sure this was the album of a sad old man who had given up. I still love Neil, but this is one I probably won’t revisit. 2/5

Didn't leave an impression

The list of people that can sing but make great music is quite long, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, maybe we can add Neil Young to this list…unfortunately not. It’s kind of like when I watched Tokyo Godfather’s in July or saw Macy Gray in an ice hockey rink in Canada; context is everything. The second half the of the album is not actually bad and I could see myself enjoying it sat in a bar dingy bar, drinking whiskey late at night anywhere, else it’s no. It’s only this that saves it from being a 1.

This album was not for me. Way too laid back and relaxed for my taste.

This is my 4th Neil Young album this month, 5th overall. Still one to go, and that doesn't count any CSNY or anything else he might be involved in. I like Neil Young. He has some great songs. None of them are on this album.

You know that scene in a movie after an emotional bombshell is dropped on the main character, or perhaps they've had a dark epiphany of some sort. That next scene fades in. Character is on the beach, looking a bit haggard and deep in thought. They toss a stone into the ocean as they stare at the empty horizon. Then as they slowly walk along the shoreline a look of acceptance appears on their face, perhaps the beginning of a smile....you know they'll be okay....roll credits Go ahead a pick a song on this depressing ass album and you have the soundtrack for that scene.

As someone who generally enjoys folk music, this didn't do it for me. The only thing keeping me rating it lower is that the last two tracks of the album were pretty damn good. So it at least ended on a good note. Otherwise though, it felt bland as hell.

Warum ist das 7 Minuten. Warum ist das überhaupt. Vielleicht hätte er öfter 2 oder mehr Jahre Pause machen sollen zwischen Alben? Ich hab wirklich überlegt dem 3 Sterne zu geben, aber da wurden es doch wieder nur 2. Weil dieser Mensch einfach zu viel schreibt und zu oft hier drauf ist.

Neil Young is the Trina Vega of soft-rock - the music behind him is actually not bad, clearly there is genuine musical talent here, but he's singing like someone who thinks they're really really good, when they're really not. His voice is tinny and feeble, which makes everything whiny and limp. Give it up, Delicious, keep that microphone on the guitar, make the album fully instrumental, and we'll call it square.

Rather underwhelmed with this album. I love Harvest Moon but know little else from Neil Young. This felt very middle of the road and uninspiring.

Some of the jams are good but a bit of a dull back to back listen.

This didn’t sound like the beach at all. Worse yet, it was terribly boring. I’ve had about five albums Neil Young is in some way credited on and this has got to be the driest….just like the sand of the beach? Was that what he was going for?

I found this album slightly boring, if I'm being honest. There wasn't much pulling me in, and nothing to really keep me wanting to listen. I think the vocals were okay, but the main thing that stood out to me was the sort of classic synth sound used in a few of the tracks. It added a nice layer to the songs. Unfortunately, that didn't make up for the lack of interest I had throughout the album. It's a shame, as I was really wanting to enjoy this. My 2nd Neil Young album and I am not a fan of the guy. Have no idea how he got 7 albums on here while making some of the blandest songs ever made. His voice irritates me so much, especially on slower songs. I liked some of the instrumental, but any enjoyment I would have is ruined by Neil's whiny voice. Oh god, not looking forward to this… oh f*. That album cover is torture. Oh… I am going to try to be open minded, really. Om Man, this is saved in my albums, so I made myself listen to this already. Well… can you tell I am not feeling Neil? Idk. I need to stop flailing about and just dive in… You know Neil, you ARE a vampire. Sucking the joy from my very being. I know, I know, how can I say that about NEIL YOUNG? The beloved NEIL YOUNG. Well you know what? He doesn’t get better for me. He gets more annoying and aggravating. He needs a crowd of people, but he can’t face them day to day. Yeah. I hear you. It’s like me facing this album. God, he’ll get a 2. I want to give him a 1, but I can’t. He’s insightful. I mean I get it. But the delivery brings me down. And buries me beneath the sand. Boolean: yes mom, I suppose so

So far, we have made many sober observations about Neil Young. But a long, bank holiday weekend is no time for sobriety. Neither is there time to waste in thinking too hard about On the Beach, when there is a beach near-by and two dogs that need walking. Better than Ragged Glory. Not so good as Rust Never Sleeps. The appearance of Levon Helm and Rick Danko genuinely makes a difference on their one song, but it is only one song, which is not enough. 1.5 Thank goodness we got a Neil Young album this weekend. I was devoting so much time and thought to why I don’t like Pet Shop Boys’ Actually that I was very grateful for an album that I could prejudge so easily. Still - Neil is just about as good as he gets when he is being morose, as he is on the second half of this album. He’s a dreadful guitar player but it works for him when he is in that mood. The pitiable saw-work of his right hand on Motion Pictures or the laborious picking on Ambulance Blues sits nicely with the image of an old man - the arthritis pushing between him and his venerable acoustic - sitting ill-postured on the porch thinking back on his victories and regrets. While the ducks are callin’. Oh to be 29 and shit at guitar. And singing of course. 1.5/5

Another Neil Young. I'm not sure what this is doing here tbh. It's fine as it is, but I don't see it contributing anything that isn't done better by another NY album. It's probably perfectly fine in isolation, but I got to the end and shrugged. Gets a 2 because it's not utterly offensive, just a bit dull.

I liked this album. I listened to it as I was packing up to move out from my student house. I liked the following songs: Walk On Vampire Blues

Look, I get that this list is full of Young aficionados, but 1001 is making me realize I like his music LESS than I previously thought. If any one of us with a guitar and three chords TRIED to get a listen from any label with these songs, we'd legitimately get thrown out on our ass. I know some Young, I didn't know this album, and came away realizing I didn't need to. All love to those who like NY, but it would be a very long pitch to get me over to your side with LPs like this.

I went in with an open mind and wow. The vibes were right, the singing was not. This album would gain an extra 2 stars if it was just instrumentals instead of his out of tune singing. Maybe I’ll come back to this, will have to see how his other work is. Always baffles me how these people can get famous on such mediocre skill.
