Reviews (page 12 of 13)
Sorry, this just isn't doing it for me. I can tell it's not that bad or anything, just... really not my cup of tea.
At first it had good vibes, then it almost put me to sleep. Blah.
Neil Young was sadly not the vibe today. Now, the instrumentations and atmosphere were actually pretty great! I just don't think they were unique enough to warrant tolerating Young's singing style, which felt more like rambling than anything else. For The Turnstiles was an especially rough listen. I'm sure I could eventually warm up to this album and enjoy it, because it certainly had some cool stuff going on. Maybe a future Neil Young project will win me over, who knows. Standout: On The Beach
Folk-y, country-esque, rock. It was fine, didn't really stick out to me. 2.4
..
Not gonna lie, when I saw that 3 songs on this album ended in the word ‘blues’, I shouted ‘Oh Fuck Off!’ Out loud (to no one in my empty flat). First half of this album is fairly listenable. Second half is utterly bland and forgettable. Some of the guitar work was fun, and Neil is a good singer. But yet another early 70s artist cranking out album after album of pure mid who would have been far better served dropping and album ever 2-3 years and actually saving the ‘good’ tracks for a better album. Do we really need an 8 minute track about riding in a fucking ambulance?! Walk On (7/10) See the Sky About to Rain (7/10) Revolution Blues (7/10) For the Turnstiles (7/10) Vampire Blues (5/10) On the Beach (5/10) Motion Pictures (For Carrie) (5/10) Ambulance Blues (5/10) 6/10
bit of a snoozefest really...
They should really call this the 956 Albums To Hear Before You Die Plus Neil Young’s Whole Fucking Discography. Christ all mighty, how many of this cunt’s albums do I really need to hear????
Nice!
To dull. So are some of Young's albums that I like. But nothing hit me on this album.
Lovely! Not exactly my jam, but I appreciate the artistry.
Really should’ve given this album a little more time, only gave it one quick listen. I thought I few of the songs were pretty similar to the Beatles but apart from that I found it underwhelming. My favourite song was ‘motion pictures(for Carrie)
Unimpressive
Meh, not my jam, but not terrible. I did find myself wanting it to be over though.
I think Neil Young is a twitter yapper born 50 years too early. There seems to be a lot of vague jabs at critics, lots of lyrics coming from a bitter place. I’m not too sure this deserves a spot on the list. Unless you’re involved in the career drama of Neil Young, a lot of this might pass right through your ears - it did for me. I liked the twangy guitar and the baseball reference on “For The Turnstiles”. I also appreciated the melancholy, low-lying mood of “Motion Pictures”. That’s about it though. I don’t have much to say for this one, nothing stuck with me.
Man, it must be hard to fill out a list this long.
I like Neil Young but I have no idea why this particular album made the list.
I generally have a high tolerance for Neil but this cut right through it.
This was fine. A little too "laid back" for me. Neil Young's voice to me is often wavering and is almost whiny in this album (he has some songs that counter this that are not on this record.) It isn't bad. I just found myself bored at times. The instrumentals are solid. Nothing flashy, but not bad. "Walk On" was the best track. Liked Songs: "Walk On" , "Revolution Blues" , "Motion Pictures (For Carrie)"
Clearly the best at what he does but I've no interest
He has much better albums.
I have not heard much Neil Young. I am familiar with the hits that were standard fare on the classic rock stations but have never listened to an entire album by him. I find this ok. The music is pleasing especially the acoustic guitar playing. The lyrics on the majority of the songs are just so-so to me. 2.25/5
Neil Young a big blind spot for me. I think I have liked all the Neil Young songs I have heard in my life, but I have never done a deep dive or even listened to a full album, I don't think? Excited for this one. Walk On > See The Sky About To Rain > Ambulance Blues > For the Turnstiles > Revolution Blues > Vampire Blues > On The Beach > Motion Pictures for Carrie Oh yeah okay there are some duds on here but wow the first two tracks had me thinking this was gonna be a 4. Walk On is really good. Also an 8 song album? Come on, where's the value, Neil my man??
not really a fan of his voice
I don't like these types of songs. Listened to 2 songs, find it very boring. Sorry for not being cool xD
I grew up listening to Neil Young, but my dad never played this album for me. It's Neil's blues album, which is fine. However, I prefer his music that's closer to rock n roll. The only track that stood out was Revolution Blues.
Didn't reach the highs of Harvest Moon
Not a fan
Meh. Neil Young's got some good songs, and I used to be into him much more. Now, all I hear is whining. 2/5.
None of these tracks do it for me, nothing memorable and far too slow. I can see the appeal but definitely not for me.
Pretty laid-back album. Had a good vibe, just not crazy about his voice all the way through. I fell asleep at the end too. 2/5
Nie echt zo mijn ding
3eme album avec NY proposé par le générateur. Pas mieux que les deux autres, rien d'original. J'ai vite fait autre chose en le laissant en musique de fond. =>2/5
Meh, I don’t think this is Neil’s greatest work. I’m not a huge fan, but I’m not not a fan either…this just seemed pretty run-of-the-mill to Me.
Pretty dull.
Not his best album
He's had better.
Honestly so mid. Wouldn't relisten
Why is there so much Neil Young on this list?! It's not bad, but it just doesn't do anything for me. He has always felt kind of whiney to me. I like his stuff better that he did with CSNY. I kind of dug the mellow guitar and bongo drums on "On the Beach" though. Good laid back summer night kind of song.
not that into it
Didn't appeal to me, 1.7
What the fuck is this list's deal with this fucking guy?
It's ok
One or two relatively bright moments amongst a monotony of shite! I really don't understand how this list has so many of his albums (including Crazy Horse etc). His singing voice just grates. Musically, the vast majority of what he churns out could be made by countless 'geezer and a guitar' types up and down the country. I did listen to the whole album, so it gets 2 stars. But please, no more Neil Young on this list, please, I beg you!
Guitar licenses should be revoked after a certain age
headache blues
Average
ok
Really get nothing out of this, he has better stuff
Never really listened to Neil Young, he removed his music from Spotify about a year ago in protest and tbh I probably wouldn’t have noticed it’s disappearance. Anyway it’s back now as he must’ve ran out of money after realising maybe he isn’t as relevant as he thinks. On to the actual album, it was listenable, the lyrics always seemed a bit random. Maybe I just don’t get it but I feel I don’t get that same energy as I do from other people in his genre. I probably wouldn’t care to listen again, but I suppose the title track was ok. But that’s about it, not revolutionary, not interesting, and no real good tunes to add to any playlists.
Reminded me of CCR, Cat Stevens, and Bob Dylan. I liked it but not enough that I'd listen to it again.
Honestly this album is so…. Bland? Nor much to talk about it is good background music lmao Fav: Revolution Blues
Alright but not my deal
70er yoar musi und klingt ois gleich heast
I can't make my mind up about Neil Young. I keep wanting to write him off, then there'll be a track that piques my interest, and then the harmonica hits... argh!
Not for me
If I was to have a Neil Young album which I truly liked and put it into my top 20 it would be a self compiled compilation from all his many releases. I can just about find one album’s worth of great track from his complete discography. None of the tracks on this album would make it which is the problem I have with Neil Young. I find the majority of his work self indulgent and boring. As many have commented his voice is on the whiny side and becomes annoying after a while. But every so often (but not recently) he comes up with a stellar song which goes way beyond his standard stuff. As I say not on this album though. Great album cover which has more of a British seaside vibe than I guess a USA one where it was actually taken. 2/5 12/1/25
Not bad but not that interesting. I don’t think I will be listening to this album again any time soon. Best track: See the sky about to rain (although this has a very similar tune to “Heart of Gold”, which is better)
It was okay
not really my vibe but ok. i like motion pictures for carrie
Man I really don’t like Neil Young’s more rock focused albums. Someone should have taken this guys amps away from him a long long time ago. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Neil Young should only perform or record by himself with an acoustic guitar. I’m not even sure what it is, but the second you put a band behind this guy he becomes almost unlistenable to me. I liked the banjo in “For The Turnstiles”. Didn’t care for the exaggerated off key vocal style. “Vampire Blues” is a hypocritical hit piece aimed squarely at the oil industry, I wonder what Neil would have his records pressed on if we didn’t have vinyl anymore. “Motion Pictures(for Carrie)” and “Ambulancee Blues” are the only redeeming tracks on the record. Much simpler and stripped down music that lends itself very well to Neil’s musical talent, and frankly the forte he should have always stuck to. 2*
The song “On the Beach” was good in spite of Neil’s vocals. The rest of the album isn’t interesting enough to get past that whiny warble.
I love Neil Young, but this was boring as shit.
I think the story about the making of this album is far more entertaining than this album. For the Turnstiles was a cool song.
Whiney bob Dylan. The more I listen to him the less I like him
This was fine, I guess.
Dont love neil young
I just can’t listen to his voice.
One day I will understand the appeal of Neil Young.
Liked it better than the 90s one but I just can't get into his voice
Snooze
did not enjoy
Not a fan and I don't care for Neil Young's voice. Some of the music was ok, then he'd start singing and ruin it for me.
Honestly I just find Neil Young boring.
Starts off so promising, thinking maybe I finally "get" the Neil Young hype. Then it goes into his usual drivel with almost terrible instrumentation *sigh* Fuck is he doing with so many goddamn albums on here? Also it is not a 1 purely because there are a couple shining moments, so it wasn't purely crap. That the Neil Young experience. 2 good songs. Yay
Was kinda surprised by how much he sounds like John Lennon at times. As interesting as that is, I didn't love this. 2/5
I wasn't looking forward to yet another endurance test of whether I could go the distance having to endure Neil's shitty voice. This one was a real surprise, because midway through he abandoned his nasally whine for a lower register, which was *great*. Unfortunately, he did so in service of some of the most boring and meandering songs I've ever heard. Not sure what was beach-like about it. Music to drown yourself to?
Whiny Blues Rock.
такой прям софт софт софт, у меня к сожалению сегодня настроение было на хард хард хард
Lo tenia de fondo, no presté mucha atención. Ni bien ni mal
ugh, more boring, boomer-nostalgia drivel from neil. i think this is the sixth album of his I've listened to on this list so far and I've liked one of them. there's just nothing interesting here. all the songs sound the same. the lyrics are uninspired. his voice is in its typical annoying form. i listened all the way through and found that i hadn't liked a single song, so i listened to a few more and found the least boring, walk on, to include in my favorites. lol. also lol at the top commenter who gave this two stars because they felt personally attacked that his music wasn't on spotify. how DARE neil young take a stance against a predatory megacorporation that doesn't pay its artists fairly! didn't he stop to think about how this would affect ME? favorites: walk on
a little dull
STANDOUTS: n/a and DNF OVERALL: 2/5; no critical thoughts. Just bland.
Nice little background jam, nothing too exciting. It was not bad but there definitely wasn't anything that made it stand out. Overall, pretty decent, especially for 1974.
Not his biggest fan
I’d never heard any of these before, and while I normally love deep cuts I would say with all due respect to Mr Young that this album was mostly boring and forgettable.
It wasn't really my thing, but maybe I just need a little more time with it.
Forever Young
Mr Whine gets on the list again. Mr Why?
Fine just kinda dull
dull
2.5
Perfectly fine music but hardly ground breaking
Not my favorite or my kind of music, but enjoyed a few songs.
It's decent. Pretty chill. Would probably not seek it out to listen to again.
It’s a no for me, dawg.
Neil’s first 3 albums were great, especially Everybody Knows This is Nowhere and After the Gold Rush. Album 4 was Harvest which was pretty good as well. This is album 5 and began a long slow decline in his overall album quality. Some OK stuff here, but a disappointment after what came before.
Really not a fan.
nothing really stood out to me with this one. it was a fine background album i guess, and i can see why people would really enjoy it... but it wasn't really my speed.
My third Neil Young and it's a worrying trend - I've gone from a strong 4 to a comfortable 3 but this one I can only give a 2. I didn't realise I had it on repeat and listened to it nearly three times without noticing. I just thought it had gone on a long time without ever piquing my interest. Just very bland and unremarkable. I understand why he's made the list, even multiple times, but surely this spot could've been given to something a bit more interesting?!
Pretty snoozy stuff, like Dylan without the wit. I don’t deny that one might find something refreshing in the simplicity, but music about how sad the artist is for being famous is always going to be a tough sell for me.
Sorry, Neil, it's not you; it's me.
Alright Neal, pick it up
No me dice nada este hombre.
is this the websites revenge for me saying i don't like neil young yesterday
It was ok. Not my style.
How many Neil Young albums do we have to hear off this list? Think I liked him better when he pulled his library from Spotify. Just too slow and too monotonous. And apparently he had the blues when he was coming up with song titles as well. I thought Walk On was OK and the best thing this album had to offer. Well, the album title, On The Beach. One of my favorite places to be. That's about it. Hope this is the last of his music. 2
2 Jfc, another Neil Young album. Think this like our fifth? The fact that we’ve had five of these now and zero Bright Eyes or blink-182 albums is either proof of an unfair God or an absence of. Anyway, I really couldn’t tell you what this album does differently than the other two we’ve heard from this era of his career, and vocals-wise, it’s just as grating as ever. Normally I’m someone who enjoys unique, imperfect voices and thinks it adds personality to the music, but Neil Young is not one of those instances for me. Given that I enjoyed his later 90s garage rock record Ragged Glory, it seems that his voice improved with age at least, but man, I could not tell you what draws people to his early work. I swear, it’s like he’s trying to piss you off with songs like For the Turnstiles. Nothing interesting going on musically, and while I do at least found him a decent lyricist and storyteller, the only lyric that really stood out to me here was “Well, I hear that Laurel Canyon is full of famous stars/But I hate them worse than lepers and I'll kill them in their cars” on Revolution Blues. I think it refers to the Manson family, but as someone who actually takes Laurel Canyon to commute to work and has to deal with rush hour traffic on it, it speaks to me on a personal level. Third 2 in a row he’s getting from me after three very similar, subpar albums. At least I’m not forced to listen to his music on YouTube anymore.
3. album i streg som bare ikke rigtigt vækker noget i mig.
I thought it was fine, nice background music I should probably give another chance.
hard to see why this was on the list.
Another Neil young? Nope.
mid
I wanted to like this more than I did but generally found it pleasant but boring. Wouldn’t skip but wouldn’t seek out
Boring
Hippy chilled country thingy
I tried. I really tried! I believe Neil Young has spawned so many imitators and derivatives. I also honestly believe I like artificial strawberry flavor more than real strawberry flavor.
I liked this more than expected. Standout song for me is Revolution Blues. Hardest to get through was Ambulance Blues.
The day the music really died is when Neil Young decided he should sing.
Neil is so hit or miss for me. This one is too folky. 2.5
Much like the previous Neil young album, not really my thing.
Aggressively mid. Could be better. Keeps going.
hippy nieprzeszkadzacze
didn’t reach out to me
I'm not the biggest Neil Young fan. This is a good enough collection for a listen. I guess my life is more complete now that I've crossed this off the list. Not really.
Pretty enjoyable. I feel I could sit around a campfire and listen to Neil Young for hours. But everything just blended together. Nothing stuck out at all, and at the end of the album a Bob Dylan song played, and I realized how much more character and charisma Dylan has compared to Young. I’m between a 2 and a 3 here.
The album came in strong with Walk On and then faded until the titular song. I played it in the background of a family gathering and it provided good vibes. Two good songs, the rest of it being good background music makes it a 2-3. I don’t know if it would be the type of thing that I would be satisfied/content listening to all the way through without doing something else. Overall, I’m glad I listened to it, but it doesn’t provide as an album.
I started listening this album on a rainy Friday afternoon. It didn't quite feel like the right atmosphere for it. I wasn't vibing with it, so I stopped and started again the next day on a bright Saturday morning.... I still didn't really like it.
Not my favourite Neil young
Not my fave but I like the vampire song!
Certainly not my favourite album, but something I'm glad I listened to. The slower, more folkier songs from the later end of the album I actually preferred over some of the earlier tracks. Fav songs: - Motion Pictures - Ambulance Blues
I liked it, and I don't really like Neil Young! Oh well.
I think if you really focus on the music and the lyrics and the sound, there is something here. But feels old. If you don't focus on it, it just sounds like music. Ambulance Blues stood out to me more than the rest
Started pretty well but really slowed down in the second half of the album. Not my typical style of music but don’t hate it.
Sehr relaxing, ruhig. Nicht mein Ding.
Not his best album, but he has a great voice.
It's okay.
A bit too slow and mellow for my taste
Folk rock all sounds the same to me man, it alright
Neil Young is another of my musical blind spots. Another of those legends that people adore, but in my head he gets mixed up with other musical Neils. Like Sedaka or Diamond. This album hasn't done anything to update me on what I'm missing. It was fine, but didn't exactly raise my attention over background music.
Toch altijd jammer als er iets niet op spotify staat hoor
More like On the Fence. I like half the album. NY has a knack for making folk music approachable for all. Almost like he writes a rock song and just plays it slower with a banjo and it works...Turnstiles. Tough to follow Harvest but in the same niche as that album. A decent one from the old man youngster.
Ich bin kein N. Young-Fan … und dies Album hat nichts daran geändert.
fine for background. Nothing to write home about
Nicht für mich
Not for me. Neil Young’s voice grates to my ears.
I really don't care for Neil Young's reedy voice or plinky plonky music, so this album couldn't do anything for me.
Classic - but not for me 🚫
Sounds like other famous Neil Young songs but I don't actually know any of these tracks. Overall a fine listen. Not mind blowing, but looking forward to his other more famous records.
Neil Young isn’t on Spotify so I had to use YouTube which was a pain and stopped every time I needed my phone for anything. I couldn’t get through the first song this way sorry. Also I know everyone reveres Neil Young but I don’t like his voice.
This list will either push you to new heights of appreciation for the sheer breadth and depth of Neil Young's catalog. Or it will drive you to quiet despair facing yet another Neil Young album warbling through his complaints about the world. I'm trending towards the latter. Star for Vampire Blues, I was surprised to find any songs I liked at all.
No, sorry, I really don't like Young's vocal style. I kind of get the songs, and can situate them in the early 1970s (having been there as a kid), but I really don't like this musical style.
Meh
A couple of these tracks weren't bad, which was a pleasant surprise. Most of it's not for me, though. 2.5 stars.
Not bad but nothing special 2.5
Not feeling it at all. Country, singer songwriter folk. That's like a recipe for the kind of music I do not like. His voice is also not very good, and it is very whiny. Almost gave it 3 stars for the rock parts, but that would have been too generous.
Fair, but eh overall.
If you weren't already depressed it might get you there.
There's a lot of Neil Young records on the list. This is the first one I got. I hope the others are better. It's not bad but, I just don't like it very much. Favorite song: on the beach
Pas fou j'aime pas trop
4/10
Meh. I thought the mid point had a good energetic feel.
It’s not that it’s bad I just can’t connect with it. Walk on was a great opener and then it just was on in the background. Neil young has excellent tracks I just need to find the album that connects.
musically fine but my god was it boring.
I found this boring, didn't make it to the end. I will go back and have another listen but for now I'm not a fan.
Raw steel guitar. folk rock.
I either find Neil Young boring and annoying or really, quite good I did not find this really, quite good
A lot of country style folk throughout the 60's and 70's it seems. Good voice, but the music failed to draw me in.
Beautiful Harmonica, otherwise not a genre I particularly enjoy. Tracks I Liked: Revolution Blues Ambulance Blues Tracks I Didn't Like: Vampire Blues On the Beach
Tror att det är tredje Neil Young albumet nu. Denna är hittills den sämsta.
Boooooring
Personal rating: 4.9
This wasn't bad. Reminded me of Joe Walsh singing. Nothing really stand out to me. 2.5/5
Old man music
This style of music really does not do much for me at all. I know it's probably the rawest display of musical talent, but it just feels so bland to me so often. Add on to it that I really do not like Neil Young's voice, and this is the result. Favorite track: Revolution Blues
Too...something.
I'm glad you have a hobby, man.
Entire Neil Young albums were never really my cup of tea. I love lots of his singles, he's got a charming way of singing and songwriting, but I find it really difficult to listen to 60 minutes of his voice with a mediocre backing band.
I was feeling good so I was going to give this a charitable 3, then that harmonica came in on Ambulance Blues like a stoned K K Slider giving it MEEEE MEEEE OHHHH MEEEE and it soured the whole thing
Just cos it’s Neil Young doesn’t mean it has to be on this list.
Boring
Last week Harvest, brilliant and emotional. This one just much and much less for me, sorry
'Walk On' is a decent enough introduction to this album, and 'See the Sky About to Rain' was a pleasant surprise for a second listen. However we peak early as the next few tracks lead to an underwhelming mid-section (especially track 4 'For the Turnstiles'). Things really tail off towards the end, and the result is an album that's a bit boring and uninteresting. 'Ambulance Blues' is sort of an alright ballad to end things off with, but not enough to save the album. Recommended: See the Sky About to Rain
His voice doesn't get any better by the 140th album. Another 2.
Mh, maybe I was not in the mood for it, but none of the songs caught my ear. I'm not too familiar with Youngs music, but this was skippable for me.
Aan het begin deins ik een beetje mee en waardeer ik de manier van zingen. Iets later erger ik mij aan wat valse zang (dieptepunt: de tweestemmige uithaal in For the Turnstiles). En aan het eind raak ik er zelfs depressief van.
So many 5s around.... but I found it dull.
2.5
Ei tämä PAHALTA kuulosta. Mutta mikä ihmeen kehu se sellainen olisi? Totuus on, että kysymyksessä on Youngin yliarvostetuin levy, jonka nytkin kuuntelin loppuun vain lojaaliudesta artistia itseään kohtaan. Mitä tulisi ajatella, kun yksi historian parhaista koukkujen ja melodioiden säveltäjistä tyytyy puhtaaseen tunnelmointiin?
Oh brother…a late night listen bc I don’t want a DN. Honestly not too bummed abt this not being in spotify…it’s mid. I’m not into folk and blues so this sound is just lost on me, some of the lyrics are cool I guess but some just make me cringe. On the beach is cool tho. A comment on the YouTube video for “vampire baby”: “ADRENACHROME...a vampire right in your face....I hope i'm wrong...so long hollywood don't let the door hit you on your way out to bad so sad for mr young”
Not particularly interesting
Yawn… Oh hi there. Sorry, I just can’t seem to stay awake today. I have had many friends try to turn me on to Neil Young. My hippy friends love him. My indy rock friends love him. Even some metalheads love this Canadian weirdo. He must be great and I am dumb. I had never heard of this album. To be fair, I haven’t heard many of his records. He REALLY likes to make music. That is one reason I feel a bit bummed out that his music doesn’t do anything for me. Maybe it is his voice that puts me off. Musically, he makes really solid art. I don’t know what to say. It is boring and hard to listen to. Since I am committed to picking a favorite track on every album… Ugg. I guess it is Vampire Blues. I like satire. 2 out of 5 stars
There are a couple of alright moments, but mostly pretty dull.
Dull
First time listening. I will say that both "Walk On" and "See the Sky About to Rain" are neat tracks. However, for my enjoyment's sake, it was downhill from there. Well...maybe except for "Ambulance Blues." My biggest gripe here is that I wish Neil was more varied and that he would change the blues vibe in at least a few songs. I get that this is a supposed all timer of 70s singer/songwriter musicianship. Ultimately, you're not going to convince me to become a Neil Young fan with this album.
Unsurprisingly, I really disliked this album. Unsurprising because it's Neil Young and he's one of, and possibly THE, most overrated artist on this list. Is this the best Neil Young album? I can't tell you. It sounds exactly like all the rest of the Neil Young albums on this list. It's just cardboard and cheap paint held together with bailing wire. The lyrics swing between privileged complaining and disingenuous preaching and Neil's signature whiney voice is grating from track one. It's pretty damn awful. But the production quality is truly top notch so it scrapes out a 2-star rating. Barely.
Harmonica really destroyed this for me
Monotonous and dull. Could have been my mood but nevertheless, not an album I will be revisiting. 2*
Walk on - bit salty but a good tune👍 See the sky about to rain- This doesn’t really stand out, just quite a chill track Revolution blues-Manson cosplay core, I guess it does what it intends?👍 For the turnstiles-quite an array of metaphors, makes it quite incoherent Vampire blues- This metaphor doesn’t do it for me. Also feel a lot of ‘blues’ tracks are quite lazy sonically On the beach- boring Motion pictures- this is a sweet little song 👍 Ambulance blues- a stream of consciousness great for falling asleep to This was quite a boring album, don’t have much to say about this 2/5
it's no harvest
Had a hard time listening to the whole thing and keep my focus... Nothing too bad but nothing to catch me, the lyrics also took me away at times... 2/5
Mhe
I'd choose Joe Rogan too over this.
Didn't get on with it, found it forgettable
On The Beach is an OK album, but hard to point out anything special as a casual listener to Neil Young. Its got a couple of OK tracks, but its mostly aging rocker bellybutton analysis. 2/5
Whiny
I love Neil in small doses and nothing from this album.
Wasn't for me. Couldn't get in to it.
Meh nothing special
I struggled with this album, despite multiple listens. It's hard to separate this from Neil's other solo work, against which it stacks up poorly. Some standout tracks, like Revolution Blues or title track On The Beech have the scale I remember from Harvest, but others, like See the Sky About to Rain, sound like a airport-hotel lounge-act going through the motions.
I like Neil Young, and I like this Album, but there's too much of him on this list. I don't think it belongs on here despite it being an interesting part of the Neil Young story.
Oje. Vielleicht hab ich heute einen guten Tag, aber ich halte das für eine gute 2.
Neil Young's fifth folk rock album. It is a moody, pessimistic piece that was recorded crudely, but has some hidden gems. Similar to other Neil Young albums, this one was not popular at release, but gained fans over time. Now it is certified gold. This album feels like Young coming to terms with his newfound fame - from previous album "Harvest" - and turning his experiences from this into songs. Some of his most emotional songs are on this album. I liked the whole vibe of the album, but wouldn't go out of my way to listen to any of the songs again.
Bit ploddy and self indulgent. Not a Young album I'll be rushing to return to.
Was ok
Too Neil Young
This was ok, but didn’t really do much for me, not one I’d come back to.
Just never got into Young.
Same old Neil Young
More captivating than 'Harvest' in its composition and instrumental execution, but still lacking a singular focus. Tracks drift mindlessly from one to another without any sense of cohesion, even taking into account the beach theme.
I suppose it's nice, and pleasant background for doing the dishes or sitting in the yard. But this is what I would consider a classic "snapshot" album, like that one photo you have of some place you were at a couple of decades ago that sits in a drawer or a box in the closet somewhere. It brings a smile when you come across it during a rummage but it's not impactful enough for you to actually scan or frame it or make it accessible anywhere on a regular basis. Dylan, The Band, Jon Mitchell, these are all artists whose music has just as much kick and electricity today as the years they debuted. Neil Young is a Canadian troubadour who successfully built a career as a tourist of blues and folk. All respect for that, but he never struck me as someone who managed to rise above it creatively, despite a couple of tunes that are. Classic Rock radio staples. Back in the box!
Did nothing for me
I don't like it
I hoped for so much but overall found it a bit boring.
Nothing very interesting. Can't see him having much of a career.
Given my recent appreciation of Neil Young, it's appropriate that I'm reviewing On The Beach, but that album cover gives me pause. It's a clever and aesthetically pleasing cover, but it activates my PTSD over monstrosities like Eric Clapton's 461 Ocean Boulevard and ELP's Love Beach. I'll try by best to keep an open mind. As it turns out, On The Beach is a mixed bag. It's much more ragged than Harvest, but it never descends into outright slop like later Young releases. Thankfully, it's grounded in the solid musicianship of folks like Ben Keith and Rusty Kershaw. It also confirms my suspicion that Young's talents are much more suited to the country idiom than they are the blues/rock idiom. His guitar work on the blues songs, of which there are several, range from merely adequate to execrable. Another problem is that many of these songs barely have melodies and only the most rudimentary structures. On The Beach starts out strong with Walk On. The verses have a nice rhythmic lilt, there's an actual structure to the tune, and the arrangement has some welcome heft. See The Sky About To Rain, a ballad in the style of Harvest, continues the winning streak. Surprisingly, the tasty Wurlitzer piano work is courtesy of Neil Young! Good for him. And Ben Keith contributes tasty steel guitar on both tunes. The trouble begins with Revolution Blues. It's a nothing tune to start with, and Neil's lame guitar breaks don't help. Thank God for drummer Levon Helm, whose tight kit work gives the tune the illusion of structure. The bare bones arrangement of For The Turnstiles is surprisingly effective, with Neil Young struggling with his banjo part and croaking out the lyrics. There are a couple of reasons for the track's success. First, it's a decent tune with a solid structure and melody. The 2nd is Ben Keith's dobro--this guy is a treasure. And finally, it just seems like Neil Young's metier is country. With Vampire Blues, we're back to another dreary blues. It's made more bearable by Ben Keith's tasty organ work. From that point on, it's almost like Neil Young gives up. The songs drone listlessly on with barely an arrangement before the album mercifully comes to an end. This review makes it seem like I hated On The Beach, but that isn't really true. There are a handful of good songs, and the rest isn't actively painful, just lame.
Not one of his best.
Eh. Not my favourite Neil Young, though I do like some of his stuff. More of a mellow album throughout. I did like the title track though!
it's okay? I guess, kinda boring
2/5 sadly nothing memorable
Not a fan
Neil Young, more like Neil Dumb
En realidad no conozco a profundidad a Neil. Me gustaron las guitarras y es un disco digerible. Me gustó revolución blues. Pero hasta ahí
Never been a Neil Young fan *shrug*
Letras difíciles de entender a que se refieren, muy situacional. Creo que hablan de un Neil en conflicto con su fama y la prensa. Tiene un par de canciones que me gustaron pero se me hizo lento, rayando en lo aburrido. Songs: Vampire Blues, Revolution Blues
Neil Young just puts me to sleep.
Definitely not my favorite Neil album.
was alright
Not a fan
I've never really been a fan of Young, his voice isn's for me. I sort of switched off while this was playing and it didn't capture my attention at all. I kept trying to focus on it, yet kept drifting away. It's unoffensive enough, but it's not really doing anything interesting.
A few good songs but i am not a Neil Young fan
Eh. Standard Neil Young.
Ihan mukava levy, mut jäi kyllä edeltävän (Rust Never Sleeps) jalkoihin
Revolution blues
Not that good. I don’t really like the way he sings and instrumental is meh. Top 3: Walk On, Ambulance Blues, Motion Pictures (For Carrie)
God damn it I thought I was finished with Neil Young!!! Nothing terribly redeeming here for me, and my hatred continues. Lynyrd Skynyrd said it best, we “don’t need him around, anyhow”
Schon wieder Neil, gemäss Statistik einer meiner kontroversisten Künstler. Und ja finde Album langweilige 70er Musik
rubbish rubbish rubbish
Said it before and I’ll say it again, Fuck Neil Young. Talentless hack.
It's Neil Young.
Didn't really find anything about this album that would make me interested or want to come back to this one. As much as I hate to admit it, everything he's done on the record, has been done better than other people (probably inspired by him) since.
The king of having a vice squeezed on his man things while he sings
3/9/26. Couldn't really get into this one, perhaps I'm not a huge fan of Neil Young's voice. I also can't help that his music feels predictable to me, but not my cup of tea.
Not my style
Nei
Did not enjoy this
No. No more Neil Young.
Some of the instrumentals are nice, but the voice is just so uninteresting. He might as well be talking
The profanity that leaves my lips when I discover that I have to listen to yet another boring album of Neil Young's awful whiny voice... I don't think he's ever been to the beach. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): N/A ⭐: Hated it.
I want to like this. I listened to a lot of Neil when I was young and his songs feel part of my history, they helped me learn the guitar, inspired me to write my own songs. What happened with this album?
Quite dull tbh
I'm sorry, I didn't realise this project was "1001 Neil Young albums to listen to before you embrace the sweet kiss of death" My bad.
Seh ich nix drin
Ion like how sounds
"'You're all just pissin' in the wind. You don't know it, but you are.' And there ain't nothin' like a friend who can tell you you're just pissin' in the wind." What the actual fuck Neil Listen, I liked three songs here. I also really didn't like five others. I'll admit, I've heard worse music in my life. But I just can't be fucked to look for whatever the hell it is in this album that makes people rate it well. I think Neil Young is whiny and sluggish, and this one did not help with that perception. Fave songs: - Walk On - For the Turnstiles - Motion Pictures (For Carrie)
Sorry Neil, but i will never like you. The Mission did a better version of 'Like a Hurricane', the only song I rate by you. This album compared to the previous efforts is much more competent in every aspect, apart from that weird guitar solo thing where it sounds like your fingers were taped together with Gorilla tape. I liked that bit of originality, but it just wasnt enough to save you from another 1 star. The rest of the album was just a plod. I'd prefer to enter the Longest Walk competition than listen to this again.
Completely forgot this album 20 minutes after it finished. 1/5
This is actually unbearable, I could've very easily died without listening to this . "oh no you just don't understand, the dogshit guitar and nursery rhyme lyrics actually signify-" oh my god shut up Date listened: 05/09/25 Favourite song: AT A STRETCH Walk On Rating: 1 star
Now, I really tried, but I just don't like Neil Young, his whining, his lyrics and especially, his voice. The only time it worked for me was on "Deja Vu" with Crosby, Still and Nash, and that's probably because he's not so prominent on that album. So, sorry, but not sorry. 1/1
Dreadful post-hippie dad rock.
Not s fan !
Neil young is a whiney baby. Best thing he ever did was remove his music from Spotify, too bad it’s back now.
BEST SONGS: - Vampire Blues - On The Beach
sounds like an album he put out because the studio needed it. nothing good on this piece of garbage.
Neil Young’s voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard in my ears. He’s in my top five of artists who cause me to change the channel. I know he’s supposed to be one of the greatest, but not to my taste. His songwriting and personal take both strike me as whiny. Motion Pictures was the only song here I would listen to again.
gonna give myself half a strike because i couldnt finish, ex's favourite album so major trauma xxx
Dislike him as a singer and human being. People must be tone deaf what are they hearing. Sounds worse than a cow caught in a hail storm.
If an individual likes Neil Young, I guess it is Ok . . . But, it was nowhere close to being characterized as being a 'classic' or as enjoyable as so many of the songs from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
Utterly boring, with awful cartoon vocals.
Not for me. 1/5
Not my choice of music
Tror eg skippe konserten hans i sommer
Boo.
garbage
Ambulance Blues, the one song that made me feel something. Not for me.
Another crappy Neil Young album? Really? The only good thing about this is the buried vehicle on the album cover. For the love of mike, please no more Neil Young.
Can't stand Neil Young's voice. That on top of this just being a really slow album, was hard for me to get into.
Neil Young is someone that 98% of the time I will never like his music. His harmonica is such a desperate and whining sound that I can’t bear for an entire second. NO thank you Mr. Young, I hope we don’t meet again.
Neil is a very tedious, very overrated, nutty old man.
Not my thing But can imagine it being decent driving alone on an american backroad
Not my taste
Neil Young is not my jam
I’ve never been a big Neil Young fan, and this didn’t help. 1. Why does anyone like this 2. He sounds like a little old lady singing in church
Day 9 - June 10, 2024 I fucking hate Neil Young. 1/5
Glad I never have to listen that again.
Not great. I get that it’s supposed to be his feelings of vulnerability and loneliness, but this album just doesn’t do it for me. I listened to it three times and didn’t find one song that stood out, or any emotional beats that resonated with me. I don’t like Neil Young’s voice, the music was forgettable, and the production was poor.
Dimery has a major crush on Neil Young, as do many critics of his vintage. Neil Young is probably the most represented artist on this list, by the time you tally up his solo albums and CSNY and Buffalo Springfield and every other time he accidentally ran tape while he was sneezing or tuning up his guitar or whatever and it was pressed on vinyl to rapturous critical acclaim from his adoring acolytes. But what is this album but the sound of a wildly successful counter-cultural boomer waking up with a hangover, and realizing that his revolution failed and the old lady left and it's all bullshit, man, so let's get stoned because the whole world is fucked, you know? And the record sounds like shit. There, I said it. Don't get me wrong, I like a shitty sounding record if it gets the heart pumping, but this is just lazy and dull. I know there is a raging throng of Neil Young fans who are still upset that this wasn't released on CD for ages, because it's his best album, maaaaaan! But, secretly in your heart of hearts, you know it isn't. It's just lazy whining. 1 star, Neil, you can do better.
Errm..
I would say Neil Young can die in a fire, but he's probably going to outlive us all.
