On The Beach

It's hard to tell if Neil Young is angry sometimes. He certainly doesn't sound the part. The theme here wasn't missed on me or anything, as Mr. Young was obviously successful at this point already and I sure he struggled to grapple with each of the things (good or bad) that came with said success and stardom. I guess it just isn't the most relatable piece of work. When undergoing this album challenge, you simply have no choice but to be exposed to Neil Young and I think his more spirited works were behind him at this point.

If Bob Dylan was more melancholic. Not a bad album but a bit drawn out imo. I like the album cover though, very nice image. Favourite tracks: For The Turnstiles, Vampire Blues 2.5/5

hm, i think it was a decent album. musically it was amazing and really sets a "sitting in front of the porch, drinking iced tea" vibe, not too much beach imo. liked, but wouldn't rave about it!

Whether he's on a stash, with a horse, whether it's tonight, or on a beach, I just can't get into Neil Young. Every time I think "this has to be the last time I will listen to albums with Neil Young in it", just to find out they're like Russian Nesting dolls. Look, I really want to like Neil Young's music. I grew up listening to "Southern Man", and "Ohio", he was ahead of his time, and from a political standpoint, he's adept. However, his clever songwriting is brought down by his extremely dull instrumental play, and lifeless production. Favorite Track: "For The Turnstiles".

I had never heard this before, although I had heard _of_ it. I like "Vampire Blues." Overall, though, it doesn't grab me enough to want to listen to it again right away. Maybe it just doesn't fit my mental state today. The album cover does exactly match the vibe of the music, though.

I can only guess the nasal drawl comes from having a stick so far up his arse its exiting a nostril?

A collection of ordinary and mostly dull rock songs, lacking the distinctive songcraft of *After The Gold Rush* or *Harvest*. (When three of the song titles are "Revolution Blues", "Vampire Blues" and "Ambulance Blues", the outlook for any kind of inventive rock and roll is pretty dire.) Only the title track conjures up any kind of atmosphere (though the lyrics are typical rock star navel-gazing.)

Being a huge fan of Neil Young I was disappointed by the album. The album opens with the song walk on and quickly goes downhill from there.

Always ends up near the top when people rank Neil Young but it’s just kinda there for me. Still Neil Young so still better than most things.

Neil Young's voice went from bad to worse as this album went through, and the quality of music following IMO. He's kind of approaching Bob Dylan territory for me.

This was just boring man, I mean the opener was pretty good but otherwise it kind of just faded into the background and didn't make much of an impression on me at all. Not gonna come back to this one even if it wasn't the worst

This album is easy listening except it’s not easy. No standouts, instrumentals are okay but his voice does not sound good.

Neil Young is at his best when he is angry and that angst comes through in the songs, and I didn't hear nearly enough of that on this record. Revolution Blues was an excellent track, but that was about it for me on this record. Many of the softer/slower songs just weren't that good. Part of it is that Young's voice is so unique, which can be a cool thing at times, but I found it just off putting on this record.

I can see why people like this, and I enjoyed a couple of the songs, but for the most part I found this pretty boring. On the Beach (the song) drags on forever. I have come to the conclusion that American folk music is unrelatable to me. Idk why exactly, but when folk music relies so much on relatibility, that makes most of the genre a pretty tough listen. I like other forms of folk music, there's some great Aussie folk music out there, and Irish folk music, but US folk sucks. I think it might be because a lot of US folk music has this self importance to it that makes me just wanna throw up.

I’m not crazy about Neil Young… and this did very little to move the needle for me. That said, I recognize Neil’s contributions and importance. It’s just not for me. Southern man didn’t need him ‘round anyhow.

Ovanligt albumval ur Young-katalogen. Jag tror aldrig jag hört den. See the sky är bra med sitt tremolopiano och steelgitarr. Titelspåret är också bra, men håller inte riktigt i 7 minuter. I övrigt låter det tyvärr rätt ofärdigt och ogenomarbetat. Inga riktiga arrangemang i låtarna, de bara pågår.

I really don't know what to think about this album. I'm a Neil Young fan much like I'm a Bob Dylan fan. I think they are both musical geniuses, but I would not go to their concerts or listen to a whole album. I prefer the 5-6 iconic songs they each sing and the many other songs they wrote that other artists sing.

Clunky, uninspiring, and has done nothing to dispel my dislike of his rather feeble voice. There were one or two brighter moments but then I realised these were the adverts.

Some of this is quite funky (for dad music) and others of it is jingly jangly nasal ennui.

I know the guy's a legend, but entire Neil Young albums all the way through kind of bore me. For this one, I feel like if you asked a reasonably robust AI to craft a Neil Young album circa 1973-1974 this is what it'd come up with.

I gave it an extra star with the hopes that it is celebrating the last fucking Neil Young album I have to listen to. Used to go to the bridge school show's when they were a thing in the Bay Area. A great thing about Neil Young closing every show was that it was a great way to beat the traffic leaving the shoreline amphitheater.

Look, I'm just not a big Neil Young fan, okay? So maybe let's pump the brakes a little bit, just pick one or two of his albums, and be done with it. I actually liked a few of these songs more I than I thought I would. I attribute this to the stellar musicians around him, rather than Young himself.

Neil Young was sadly not the vibe today. Now, the instrumentations and atmosphere were actually pretty great! I just don't think they were unique enough to warrant tolerating Young's singing style, which felt more like rambling than anything else. For The Turnstiles was an especially rough listen. I'm sure I could eventually warm up to this album and enjoy it, because it certainly had some cool stuff going on. Maybe a future Neil Young project will win me over, who knows. Not gonna lie, when I saw that 3 songs on this album ended in the word ‘blues’, I shouted ‘Oh Fuck Off!’ Out loud (to no one in my empty flat). First half of this album is fairly listenable. Second half is utterly bland and forgettable. Some of the guitar work was fun, and Neil is a good singer. But yet another early 70s artist cranking out album after album of pure mid who would have been far better served dropping and album ever 2-3 years and actually saving the ‘good’ tracks for a better album. Do we really need an 8 minute track about riding in a fucking ambulance?! I think Neil Young is a twitter yapper born 50 years too early. There seems to be a lot of vague jabs at critics, lots of lyrics coming from a bitter place. I’m not too sure this deserves a spot on the list. Unless you’re involved in the career drama of Neil Young, a lot of this might pass right through your ears - it did for me. I liked the twangy guitar and the baseball reference on “For The Turnstiles”. I also appreciated the melancholy, low-lying mood of “Motion Pictures”. That’s about it though. I don’t have much to say for this one, nothing stuck with me.

I grew up listening to Neil Young, but my dad never played this album for me. It's Neil's blues album, which is fine. However, I prefer his music that's closer to rock n roll. The only track that stood out was Revolution Blues.

Never really listened to Neil Young, he removed his music from Spotify about a year ago in protest and tbh I probably wouldn’t have noticed it’s disappearance. Anyway it’s back now as he must’ve ran out of money after realising maybe he isn’t as relevant as he thinks. On to the actual album, it was listenable, the lyrics always seemed a bit random. Maybe I just don’t get it but I feel I don’t get that same energy as I do from other people in his genre. I probably wouldn’t care to listen again, but I suppose the title track was ok. But that’s about it, not revolutionary, not interesting, and no real good tunes to add to any playlists.

Reminded me of CCR, Cat Stevens, and Bob Dylan. I liked it but not enough that I'd listen to it again.

If I was to have a Neil Young album which I truly liked and put it into my top 20 it would be a self compiled compilation from all his many releases. I can just about find one album’s worth of great track from his complete discography. None of the tracks on this album would make it which is the problem I have with Neil Young. I find the majority of his work self indulgent and boring. As many have commented his voice is on the whiny side and becomes annoying after a while. But every so often (but not recently) he comes up with a stellar song which goes way beyond his standard stuff. As I say not on this album though. Great album cover which has more of a British seaside vibe than I guess a USA one where it was actually taken. 2/5 12/1/25

Man I really don’t like Neil Young’s more rock focused albums. Someone should have taken this guys amps away from him a long long time ago. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Neil Young should only perform or record by himself with an acoustic guitar. I’m not even sure what it is, but the second you put a band behind this guy he becomes almost unlistenable to me. I liked the banjo in “For The Turnstiles”. Didn’t care for the exaggerated off key vocal style. “Vampire Blues” is a hypocritical hit piece aimed squarely at the oil industry, I wonder what Neil would have his records pressed on if we didn’t have vinyl anymore. “Motion Pictures(for Carrie)” and “Ambulancee Blues” are the only redeeming tracks on the record. Much simpler and stripped down music that lends itself very well to Neil’s musical talent, and frankly the forte he should have always stuck to. 2*

This one was a real surprise, because midway through he abandoned his nasally whine for a lower register, which was *great*. Nice little background jam, nothing too exciting. It was not bad but there definitely wasn't anything that made it stand out. Overall, pretty decent, especially for 1974.

Perfectly fine music but hardly ground breaking

Not my favorite or my kind of music, but enjoyed a few songs.

It's decent. Pretty chill. Would probably not seek it out to listen to again.

Neil’s first 3 albums were great, especially Everybody Knows This is Nowhere and After the Gold Rush. Album 4 was Harvest which was pretty good as well. This is album 5 and began a long slow decline in his overall album quality. Some OK stuff here, but a disappointment after what came before.

Really not a fan.

nothing really stood out to me with this one. it was a fine background album i guess, and i can see why people would really enjoy it... but it wasn't really my speed.

My third Neil Young and it's a worrying trend - I've gone from a strong 4 to a comfortable 3 but this one I can only give a 2. I didn't realise I had it on repeat and listened to it nearly three times without noticing. I just thought it had gone on a long time without ever piquing my interest. Just very bland and unremarkable. I understand why he's made the list, even multiple times, but surely this spot could've been given to something a bit more interesting?!

Pretty snoozy stuff, like Dylan without the wit. I don’t deny that one might find something refreshing in the simplicity, but music about how sad the artist is for being famous is always going to be a tough sell for me.

How many Neil Young albums do we have to hear off this list? Think I liked him better when he pulled his library from Spotify. Just too slow and too monotonous. And apparently he had the blues when he was coming up with song titles as well. I thought Walk On was OK and the best thing this album had to offer. Well, the album title, On The Beach. One of my favorite places to be. That's about it. Hope this is the last of his music. 2

2 Jfc, another Neil Young album. Think this like our fifth? The fact that we’ve had five of these now and zero Bright Eyes or blink-182 albums is either proof of an unfair God or an absence of. Anyway, I really couldn’t tell you what this album does differently than the other two we’ve heard from this era of his career, and vocals-wise, it’s just as grating as ever. Normally I’m someone who enjoys unique, imperfect voices and thinks it adds personality to the music, but Neil Young is not one of those instances for me. Given that I enjoyed his later 90s garage rock record Ragged Glory, it seems that his voice improved with age at least, but man, I could not tell you what draws people to his early work. I swear, it’s like he’s trying to piss you off with songs like For the Turnstiles. Nothing interesting going on musically, and while I do at least found him a decent lyricist and storyteller, the only lyric that really stood out to me here was “Well, I hear that Laurel Canyon is full of famous stars/But I hate them worse than lepers and I'll kill them in their cars” on Revolution Blues. I think it refers to the Manson family, but as someone who actually takes Laurel Canyon to commute to work and has to deal with rush hour traffic on it, it speaks to me on a personal level. Third 2 in a row he’s getting from me after three very similar, subpar albums. At least I’m not forced to listen to his music on YouTube anymore.

I tried. I really tried! I believe Neil Young has spawned so many imitators and derivatives. I also honestly believe I like artificial strawberry flavor more than real strawberry flavor.

I liked this more than expected. Standout song for me is Revolution Blues. Hardest to get through was Ambulance Blues.

The day the music really died is when Neil Young decided he should sing.

Neil is so hit or miss for me. This one is too folky. 2.5

I'm not the biggest Neil Young fan. This is a good enough collection for a listen. I guess my life is more complete now that I've crossed this off the list. Not really.

Pretty enjoyable. I feel I could sit around a campfire and listen to Neil Young for hours. But everything just blended together. Nothing stuck out at all, and at the end of the album a Bob Dylan song played, and I realized how much more character and charisma Dylan has compared to Young. I’m between a 2 and a 3 here.

The album came in strong with Walk On and then faded until the titular song. I played it in the background of a family gathering and it provided good vibes. Two good songs, the rest of it being good background music makes it a 2-3. I don’t know if it would be the type of thing that I would be satisfied/content listening to all the way through without doing something else. Overall, I’m glad I listened to it, but it doesn’t provide as an album.

I started listening this album on a rainy Friday afternoon. It didn't quite feel like the right atmosphere for it. I wasn't vibing with it, so I stopped and started again the next day on a bright Saturday morning.... I still didn't really like it.

Certainly not my favourite album, but something I'm glad I listened to. The slower, more folkier songs from the later end of the album I actually preferred over some of the earlier tracks. Fav songs: - Motion Pictures - Ambulance Blues

I liked it, and I don't really like Neil Young! Oh well.

I think if you really focus on the music and the lyrics and the sound, there is something here. But feels old. If you don't focus on it, it just sounds like music. Ambulance Blues stood out to me more than the rest

Started pretty well but really slowed down in the second half of the album. Not my typical style of music but don’t hate it.

Neil Young is another of my musical blind spots. Another of those legends that people adore, but in my head he gets mixed up with other musical Neils. Like Sedaka or Diamond. This album hasn't done anything to update me on what I'm missing. It was fine, but didn't exactly raise my attention over background music.

More like On the Fence. I like half the album. NY has a knack for making folk music approachable for all. Almost like he writes a rock song and just plays it slower with a banjo and it works...Turnstiles. Tough to follow Harvest but in the same niche as that album. A decent one from the old man youngster.

I really don't care for Neil Young's reedy voice or plinky plonky music, so this album couldn't do anything for me.

Sounds like other famous Neil Young songs but I don't actually know any of these tracks. Overall a fine listen. Not mind blowing, but looking forward to his other more famous records.

Neil Young isn’t on Spotify so I had to use YouTube which was a pain and stopped every time I needed my phone for anything. I couldn’t get through the first song this way sorry. Also I know everyone reveres Neil Young but I don’t like his voice.

This list will either push you to new heights of appreciation for the sheer breadth and depth of Neil Young's catalog. Or it will drive you to quiet despair facing yet another Neil Young album warbling through his complaints about the world. I'm trending towards the latter. Star for Vampire Blues, I was surprised to find any songs I liked at all.

No, sorry, I really don't like Young's vocal style. I kind of get the songs, and can situate them in the early 1970s (having been there as a kid), but I really don't like this musical style.

A couple of these tracks weren't bad, which was a pleasant surprise. Most of it's not for me, though. 2.5 stars.
