Reviews (page 10 of 13)
I’d give this a solid 3. Pleasant to listen to but nothing that stuck with me
Pleasant listen. His instrumentals are more country sounding than I realized even though his voice is distinctly Neil young and not country
1. Walk On 5. Vampire Blues 6. On the Beach
This is one of the albums he released after Harvest which was a very well received album critically but a lot of angst alienation and nihilist’s tendency’s that was just part of his makeup he always had interesting opinions I mean how do you not want to give your permission to be filmed and put into the Woodstock Movie? You would think and I did as well that it was only Crosby Stills And Nash playing but he didn’t want his image or name associated with the event for his own Quirky reasons that being said compared to other works it is a really good album if your a consummate fan and I can’t give half stars but because I love a lot of the groups he was a part of I probably give him a slightly higher grade but it’s a 3+ at best
Never been a fan of Neil Young but there are some good songs on here!
I like the music. It works well as background/study music. Neil Young‘s voice is not my favorite, but it doesn’t bother me that much.
I feel like there is a loose breeziness to this album that it makes easy to listen to, but also hard to latch on to. The reviews talk about it's pessimism, but it comes off more as winsome to me.
Gear: Fostex TH610 Mix: adäquat unspektakulär mit Lichtblicken (insb. Akustikgitarre in "For The Turnstiles" und Percussion in "On The Beach") Musik: Einfach. Gut. Wertung: 🏖️🏖️(🏖️)/5
I’m gonna make every song I write in the key of life if it sounds this good (shitty joke).
I reallyvlike this album. Starts out string and upbeat. Ends in a bit if a slower nite. Not any real singles, so maybe has passed some people's radar. Still a a great solid album.
I like the album art. Will definitely revisit. I like the melancholy vibe.
Okay
I enjoyed the first two songs and a few of the last songs a lot. The middle of the album lost it for me a little but overall I enjoyed it. Neil Young definitely captured the energy and sound of music you want to listen to during a day at the beach. Is it groundbreaking and earth-shattering music? No. Does it contain incredibly deep and meaningful messages? No. Does it make me want to lay around and do nothing all day while drinking? Absolutely.
Used to be really into psych rock but its the first time I hear about Neil Young. After listening to it I know why: its pretty boring. It got some country elements that I find cool but its overla not bad, but not memorable
A nothing sandwich. The instrumentation was okay but I found the lyrics to be mundane and the singer's voice to be boring and somewhat grating. This is just barely a 3 for me, but a 3 I would never listen to again. This is a the tipping point between like/dislike for me, which is always good to find.
I liked some of this sound. Pretty standard stuff.
This is a 3 by way of there was stuff I really liked (turnstiles) and stuff I really didn't (lots of on the beach). I'd love a song at the start then it would sputter out and I'd fight the urge to skip to the next song. I didn't hate this album but I probably wont be going back to it any time soon.
Never been a huge Neil fan. Nothing against him; I like the music and everything. Maybe it’s his voice? Very unique, it is.
pretty good
Repasar alguna canción como vampire blues
A neil young album without the major hits. Still pretty good!
- good vibes but did not feel insanely beachy to me tbh
- really enjoy the vibes on the first half of this album - a couple snoozers near the end
good album! Liked it a lot and will get a relisten in the future sometimes. Also very nice cover
His singing voice always annoys me, but great music otherwise
This is my third Neil Young solo album to review, and like his other albums, I thought this was fine. I liked how the lyrics explored loneliness and disillusionment, with a little bit of cultural and societal critiques as well. I think these are emotions that Neil Young explores really well, and I think that this album is an interesting follow up to Harvest, and the things Neil Young was experiencing in his career and life at the time. Musically, this album was pleasant to listen to, but nothing really stood out to me, and I think the album was weighed down some by the longer songs. Overall though, this was a good album, and I'm looking forward to when I get to review After the Gold Rush.
6/10 Neil Young is always listenable, or at least so far. This is OK, but it is nowhere near the list of my favorite albums from him. 3-16-2024
7/10 Don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t a gentle, vibey, country-tinged folk rock album Liked it though Gentle but not outstanding music with an excellent and distinctive voice on top Best: See the Sky About to Rain
Honestly, I’m just lucky that two Neil Young albums came up on this list within my 30 day free trial of Apple Music. All because of the Joe Rogan/Spotify deal I’ve gotta have some other streaming service to listen to this album. And I get it, I’m not a fan of Rogan either, but now cancel culture is effecting me and I hate it. I’m fully embracing my old man shaking his fist at the sky moment. Are these my first steps towards conservatism? But for real, I thought this album was pretty good. Easy listening and blues made for a great Saturday afternoon on the porch. A couple solid songs, like Walk On, Vampire Blues, and On The Beach stood out, and the rest blended together pretty nicely. I enjoyed this album more than After The Gold Rush, but it still wasn’t anything that I’d consider groundbreaking.
best priem maar niks bijzonders
Mellow
another solid album from this classic rock legend.
Enjoyed most of it, not his strongest one but I like his old voice
Good, but wouldn’t bother listening to it again.
Dark lyrics, good production. I like the blues songs on it. Haven't really dove into Neil's catalog other than Harvest and his greatest hits so it's cool to listen to something else by him.
2024-03-10...
I didn’t listen to this in an optimal environment — I started falling asleep during the back half of it.
it's ok-not a huge fan of his voice, but guitar is nice
As with previous Neil young stuff, the fact I have to listen with adverts on YouTube is hugely distracting and ruins the flow of the album. However, this one may the start of me liking his stuff. It's the second one I've had and I enjoyed the mood in this one more than others.
I have had friends over the years that do not share my musical tastes. I can get past those that choose to ignore whole genres like techno or chant, but have a harder time with those that "hate X band." How can you hate a band? But I came to realize that it was often because they didn't like some political aspect or personal reason. But then there are those that simply don't like a band and it is nearly always because they don't like the singer's voice. I love (for example) Rush and Tom Petty. Both of which friends of mine have sited they don't like because they don't like the singers. I still question "every song?" But than again... I never could quite get into Neil Young. Lyrics are fine, band is fine... I think it is his voice actually. I just don't get anything emotional out of it. So I suppose I need to "get it" with my friends and know I too have this reasoning...
Listened on a gloomy rainy morning. Fit my meditative, quiet mood. BTW unable to play it on spotify. Had to find it on you tube.
Pretty relaxing, not bad. Enjoyed it a fair bit, though not enough to bother looking at other bits of the discography.
It's a nice record, probably would listen again but not my favourite NY
I really liked this. Nice and chill.
decent 3.5/5
Unable to access on Spotify.
That last piece was moving, and I feel like if I return to this more often my take would improve.
Nice easy listening album
This album is fine, I didn't like every song but the main title one, Walk On and Motion Pictures were really good.
This was an ok album for me. A whole album of what seemed to be complaining was a bit much. It was good to hear, but not one I will go back to.
Nice album. He made so many, and about half I haven’t heard. This was one.
A few good songs.
Not one of his best albums, prefer most of the music before this.
Not the best Neil Young Album
When I saw this I thought "Oh no, not Neil Young again", but I was actually pleasantly surprised! This was probably his best album so far of those we've had on this list. It perhaps didn't have any songs quite as good as 'My My, Hey Hey' from the 'Rust Never Sleeps' album, but it was much more solid and consistent throughout the record.
Okay
On the Beach is a fitting name, great vibes, easy listening I could listen to it all day. That being said not super memorable, but very enjoyable.
“The tracks on this release are not available” - Spotify
I was genuinely surprised to not loathe this, as I have any other Neil Young in the list. Pleasantly enough bluesy to not be offensive, not Neil Youngy enough to be offensive. I might even stretch to a 3.
Steady.
His songs are probably good, but that voice... So, so nasal and whiny.
Ruhiges, melancholisches Folk-Album, aber besser als Buffalo Springfield
could not listen, but i also can't click on did not listen cause i'm late to the party
Unmemorable and boring. Most of it was alright but For The Turnstiles really grinded my gears. 2.5 ish ... I'll round up.
Not my favorite Neil young
The album was a bit hit & miss until Ambulance Blues. Something about that song elevated it from a 2 to 3 star
Plezante harmoniejen, vind z’n nummers met Crosby, Stills & Nash wel beter
Enjoyed this one more that other Neil young’s for so reason - decent cleaning music!
Albeit with retaliatory and dark themes, the lyrics were very creative. Simple arrangements. Love the title track. Surprised to see Crosby and Nash on different tracks.
I had no real expectation going into this one. I know Neil Young and some of his hits, but I never sought him out. This was strange in that the first two songs, "Walk On" and "See The Sky About The Rain" really resonated with me and reminded me of the struggles of having a shitty day. But then the rest of the songs just didn't click. I appreciate having discoverd those first two tunes.
Stor 3’er
Not bad mellow
Very solid album. This is right in the Neil Young wheelhouse that I typically associate him with. A handful of good hits and not really any low points on it. Very pleasant through and through. It's possible I've been stingy on my ratings for the past 25+ albums but nothing has really impressed me. It's so refreshing to find an album I was pretty much unfamiliar with that I enjoyed. Due to the lackluster run before this I'm giving it the bump to 4 stars. Unfortunately Neil is not on Spotify because I would plan to revisit this if so. 3.50 stars
It was fine. Quite a bit more than a "meh," but far less than an, "oh yeah!" Nothing stood out that I disliked (unlike his After The Gold Rush album I didn't care for), but also nothing stood out that I really liked. It was fine.
Better than "Tonight's the Night" and "After the Gold Rush", not as good as "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere." 3.5.
Enjoyed but it felt like more of the same with a few recycled tunes.
Found on YouTube. That sound is soooo chill.
Some hits, some misses, but damn he can blow the shit out of that harmonica
Would have been 4 if I didn't have to listen to this on YouTube.
A good old 60s album. White Rabbit - beyond classic.
A bit darker than Harvest, but quite enjoyable. A few of the songs are excellent.
This felt kinda bland. Second part was a bit better. I actually had many thoughts while listening but it all boils down to yet another 'meh'.
Not available on spotify but have heard a track or two and sounds decent enough
Wel goed opzich, maar had er niet perse trek in gister
Well, it's a Neil Young album. Sounds like Neil Young, so if you like Neil Young, you'll like this Neil Young album. I like Neil Young just fine, but don't love him. In fact, I'd say I like him and his music 3/5 stars.
Pretty solid. I think that if I were to sit down and completely focus on it, I would rate it higher.
It's...fine. Young's lyrics are sometimes comically silly and simple, which makes it hard to get to the root of what he's trying to say. The melodies are...fine.
Very generic Neil Young. It's still Neil Young with his folksy rock and controlled whiny voice that works for the genre. Not his most special album but a good one.
Not my favorite Neil Young album, but the guitar playing and overall melancholic tone make this an enjoyable record for sure, along with a fair amount of solid tracks.
Kinda mediocre to me but not really my style in the first place.
It's an easy listen and has some nice mellow tunes in there. It's a little too soft for me but I can see a situation when I would put this on to relax. I'm not sure if it's an album I'd come to again but there are a few good songs that I'd add to my regular playlist if Neil Young still had this songs on Spotify.
Übliches von Neil Young
Easy listening, good vibes, dope cover but not something I'd listen to every day and hard to find
This was my second Neil Young in a row and I didn’t enjoy this as much as yesterday’s. Not bad just not really for me. I did really enjoy the title track; it may be my favorite from this album.
didnt know that I liked him
I get why it's a classic but not my favorite, couldn't explain why though.
3.75 A morose album, good for rainy days. I know Neil Young doesn’t have the strongest voice, but I don’t think it’s quite at the level of Bob Dylan’s where it’s expected as part of the song— as if it’s not trying to (in great earnest) to hit the right notes. (Bob seems like he’s trying to hit some note, whether or not it’s the correct note is a different story, but it feels like Neil isn’t really trying sometimes.) I did feel like the album lost a lot of its momentum about 1/2 way through, but still comparing it to a lot of similar singer/songwriters of 70s and onwards, it’s still great musicianship.
Just okay. I prefer some of his other music.
It was ok, not as good as I hoped.
This is a very relaxing album. It’s got the nice sentimentality I’d expect from a Neil Young album, with some very nice storytelling to boot. The fact that it’s this long with only 8 songs, though, makes me wonder where my attention span went. 3.7/5 Fav: “For The Turnstiles” Least Fav: “Ambulance Blues”
I liked this more than the other Neil Young albums I’ve come across. Still had some harmonica, but tastefully sparse rather than everywhere. I like the depressed and more low-key vibes.
This was decent
Its ok
Bonito. Pero no es mi favorito. See the Sky About to Rain se parece a una de Neil Young.
couldn’t listen to it, but i’ll just give it a 3 cause it’s probably in the middle.
Enjoyed the music, but Young's voice is not my style.
Not a big Neil Young fan
Солидно 6/10
Neil just singin and such, not bad
Not the most exciting album I've heard, a pretty meh album. I know that Neil Young has better tracks here in other albums. I did like Vampire Blues though.
Pretty chill vibe but not really my jam.
Like walk on. Very chilly song and good guitar riff. Rest of the album is okay. I think this counts as mum rock
Boring. (And not available on Spotify.)
Very vibey and folky, acoustic, hippy-ish. It's nice, but not really my jam. It gives the vibe of something that's better when you know the lyrics. The mood is very wistful and melancholy.
Ok
3/5
Starts strong, but ends on a few too long and too slow songs.
Neil Young. Meh.
Not available on Spotify
knorke
Some really great tracks, some lemons though as well
Very Neil Young. Also kind of Joe Walsh?
All time favorite
Another fucking Neil Young album.... Jesus Christ. Slightly better than yesterday's album, but BARELY.
Walk On - 4/5 See the Sky - 3/5 Revolution Blues - 4/5 For the Turnstiles - 3/5 Vampire Blues - 2/5 On the Beach - 2/5 Motion Pictures - 3/5 Ambulance Blues - 2/5
Enjoyed the blues style a lot. Wish some weren't so slow, but, overall, pretty neat. Fav tracks: Revolution Blues, Walk On
Decent.
chill
I can't really hear it on Spotify but on yt it's alright
3+
Not on Spotify
I don't mind it, don't mind it at all.
I don't mind Neil Young's gravelly voice. This is a close your eyes album and relax.
Nice, hard to find
It was aight, some fun tunes but overall nothing groundbreaking
Melancholy.
Good music, getting past the political views.
Not a bad album but it’s definitely not my favourite of Neil Young’s. Well worth a listen but I wouldn’t want to revisit very often.
Favorieten: -
Just rated Neil Young's "Tonight's The Night" with 2/5, immediately got "On the beach"... I have to say that it starts off way better. After my first Neil Young album, I wasn't sure if he really couldn't sing, or if it was his "style". Seems to be both. However, it stands out less here. Overall ok, a couple of good songs, but mostly fades into the background.
Pretty good.
5/10 solid enough just doesn't leave much of an impact on me
It's alright. Not one of the best that I've heard from him. It is a fifth studio album. So someone hasn't been paying attention.
This sounds like every other Neil Young album I’ve ever listened to, but not as good. How many more Neil Young albums are essential to listen to before I die? Like for real.
A-ok
Neil Young has a lot of good songs and a bunch of good albums as well, but I do not think this one rates among his best. I guess when you make something in the direction of 50 albums, they can't all be bangers. This one started out alright, but got less interesting as it went along. I felt like it was about a 2.5, but thats not an option and I couldn't decide which one to go with so I flipped a coin and gave it a 3/5: acceptable
1. Walk On - I don't mind the sound of this one, and I like the lyrical theme. 2. See the Sky About to Rain - I like the sound of this one, it's calming. I think I may have heard it before, it sounds familiar. 3. Revolution Blues - this one is pretty upbeat and rocky. according to genius, it's a commentary on the Charles Manson murders, so that's interesting. 4. For the Turnstiles - don't love this one, it's a bit more stripped back and country-ish. 5. Vampire Blues - I don't mind this one. 6. On the Beach - I don't mind the sound of this one, it's pretty slow but it works. 7 mins is a little long. 7. Motion Pictures (For Carrie) - a little slow and I don't love the harmonica. 8. Ambulance Blues - a little too long and I don't love the sound. Overall, it's a pretty consistent album and easy to listen to. And I think I probably like the lyrics a bit better on this one than Harvest but I like the musical style of Harvest more for his voice.
Sounds like Neil Young
I thought On the Beach was a beautiful song. The rest of it isn't my cup of tea, but I think a lot of it is his voice. They'd be different songs with a different vocal. Five stars for the album cover, though.
A little melancholy. Not necessarily for me.
Listened to half. Didn't have time.
Reasonably low key Americana, not offensive but not spectacular either. 'Blues' seems to be a recurring theme in song naming and Ambulance Blues drags on for its 9m playtime. Walk On and For The Turnstiles were my standout tracks
Did not listen as it's not on Spotify.
This is fine. Pretty moody, lyrics wise. Would be best on a lazy day. Title track is the standout.
Title song ‘On the Beach’ was one of the less interesting songs on the album. First couple of songs were interesting and felt beachy. Young’s lyricism isn’t my style - spoken word-esque.
Didn’t love it or hate it. 2.5
70er Terrassenmusil wie Credance Clearwater
a generally alright album
Finally got around to this one. Lots of blues and very melancholy but I liked it
A high three, but it makes me annoyed that this album falls under the “great at first and then declines” category. Either way, not bad at all.
Chilled out and easy to listen to
Not on Spotify, not going looking
Well, now that I've heard Crosby, Stills and Nash without Young and Young without Crosby, Stills and Nash I'm hoping when I get an album where they're all together it actually does something for me because this one really didn't. That being said, although I liked this album more than the first CSN album I really don't have the highest of hopes. This era of folk just isn't for me. On the beach starts off well enough. The first 3 tracks are fine but after revolution blues it really falls off and by the end I was struggling to even stay focused on what I was listening to. I was hoping this would be the album that had heart of gold on it because I kinda like that song. It's a solid 3 stars. Didn't love it. Didn't hate it. The music just did nothing for me to warrant another listen so I won't be giving it one.
The longing of this album is much different when compared to Harvest, as intended. I really appreciate the themes of loneliness and feeling distanced while being around people. I always forget how much I like Neil young, wish his music was back on Spotify
6/10 un peu underwhelm comme neil young. décu
Never heard this album or any of the songs on it. Read a couple of reviews basically saying it is incredible sad music. I didn't get that at all. I don't think this is up to Neil Young's best work either as a solo artist or with CSNY or Crazy Horse but it still pretty good.
Why is he so angry
Marked down for not being on Spotify
Decent album. I liked this more than most solo Neil Young. He is good, and my appreciation of him has grown, but I'm still just a moderate fan. 3.25/5
Not his best one, pretty boring
I've heard this one twice, but so far nothing memorable. I probably should listen to this one again while reading the lyrics, because I can imagine myself getting more into it that way. Not bad, somber mood. But one thing I love is the cover, that's pretty iconic.
ok when i managed to find it on youtube
One of the better Neil Young albums we've had (which isn't saying much!) - first track was excellent, then consistently decent until it lost its way a bit with the last track. The songs are written in a way that mask the weaknesses in his singing voice. Solid but never quite spectacular - 3/5.
genieten maar het blijft niet zo hangen
MMM?
I like the melancholy hippy folk ones. I don't care for the blues ones. The production on the 2016 Remaster I found on YouTube sounds great.
I read somewhere that Neil wanted Side B to go first so that's how I listened. 3 of the most boring songs I've heard from NY... thankfully saved by Side A, somewhat.
Neil Young is quite a talent but nothing here that grabbed me and made me want to listen again.
Life’s a beach
It's okay, nothing really outstanding, but kinda pleasant to listen to
Folk music's hard ceiling with me has been proven once again. Really nice songwriting and performance, but I just can't get myself into the music as much as I want to. Favorite track: Walk On
It's a shame his music isn't on Spotify anymore. Glad I'm able to enjoy his music else where. Kinda gives me wild west vibes which is really calming
3-4
Couldn't find it on Spotify🤷🏻♀️
Neil Young once told me that a man can eat all the pussy he wants, but at the end of the day, it's the pussy the man came out of that really matters. That struck a chord with me and it's why I started regularly going down on my own mother. She's been dead 14 years and still tastes wonderful.
Old Neil
Hoe meer platen ik van Neil Young hoor, hoe meer ik me realiseer dat 't eigenlijk soms een wauwelende straatmuzikant is die ik totaal zou negeren. Hoewel sommige nummers dan wel weer net goed vallen...
Toffe plaat!
Love Neil Young. Always liked the folky throwback on For The Turnstiles. Not his strongest work but still good.
neil young thinks he can pull a fast one on me! i've gotten a handful of young albums so far: solo, csny, and him with crazy horse. i still wouldn't call myself a neil young fan, but thank goodness we have an album of his that was a nice listen. but did neil young think that i wouldn't realize on the beach is a pleasant listen?! where has this neil young been! on this album, young uses folk rock not in a brash way but in more of an easy listening way. his harmonica is not grating. it's a mellow kind of album, which makes sense when he dipped his toe into the blues. i might not be a huge fan of his vocals but i can tolerate it well enough. "vampire blues" is a cute, tongue-in-cheek song, which is an unfamiliar feeling (for me) with neil young. i enjoyed his lyrics here in general. but "motion pictures" was the one, however simple it might appear, was crafted to be simple but grabbing. "see the sky about to rain" was not about actual nature, but rather life's ups and downs for everybody, especially anticipating a negative event. "walk on" must be the most personal song of the album. "i remember the good old days/[...]/but we still did the best we could."
The best Neil Young I have heard to date, only a few songs where his voice was over whiney.
Tasalaatuinen - vai tasapaksu? Meni massana toisesta korvasta sisään, toisesta ulos. Keveitä lauluja, jotka tosin ainakin antavat kuvan, että ovat syvempiä. Vaikea arvioida, kaks tähteä tuntuu vähältä.
Wasn't into it at first but it grew on me as I went along. It's an interesting album, at times it's almost like psychedelic country music which is something I can get behind. Not the biggest fan of Neils voice but it is quite soothing at times. Favourite song: Vampire Blues.
Good folk album. Not much I could really get into. 3/5
It got a little boring, but it was pleasant enough. I was hoping to like it a little more. Oh well. I liked the overall tone of the album, but a lot of the songs didn't grab my attention. My favourite song was Revolution Blues.
Bonito. Pero no es mi favorito. See the Sky About to Rain se parece a una de Neil Young.
Neil Young is a talented writer. IMHO
a solid neil old album. still i hate this guy for not being on spotify
забыла про биф Нила со спотифаем. вроде хороший)
Well I can’t say that album justifies its place on the list, but it was certainly entertaining. He has some really nice songs in there, just not very original or inspiring or having range. 3/5
Maybe my favorite Neil Young album so far? This really does feel like sitting on the beach. Neil Young works best when he goes for simplicity like this - uncomplicated songs that come from a man simply making music for himself. Standouts are the title track and Walk On.
Ekki hans besta verk, en alveg ágætt þó.
Super solid album. I loved Revolution Blues.
I have to listen to this with an open mind. I'm not a fan of Neil Young's vocals, but I thinks there's supposed to be something to the lyrics so I'll be fair in listening to them. Walk On - I like the music, lyrics average, vocals what I expected. 6/10 See the Sky About to Rain - Music average, lyrics average, vocals a bit better. 5/10 Revolution Blues - The music is average with a few high points in the instrumental sections. Lyrics are pretty good, but I don't think I'm getting the intended message. Vocals are ok. 6/10 For the Turnstiles - Starts with a bluegrass sound, lyrics ok, vocals ok. 4/10 Vampire Blues - Starts with an actual blues sound - pretty good, lyrics directed at the oil industry - still an issue today, so I'm getting into this one. Vocals have a more blues-y sound. 8/10 On the Beach - Music is mellow and very pleasant. Lyrics are meaningful and feel the emotions. The vocals are very fitting with the music and tone of the song. Best part of the song is the blues-driven solo. Overall sound is the best I've heard so far. 9/10 Motion Pictures - Nice sound, lyrics ok, vocals ok. 6/10 Ambulance Blues - music is very nice; lyrics appear to have significant meaning, some are clear while others are vague; vocals are nice, I think they are growing on me so that's something. 7/10 The album starts kinda meh. As it progresses, it feels more meaningful. I may listen to a couple of these again, but I don't feel particularly inspired by the album as a whole.
Joe Rogan somehow means I can’t listen
I liked this record a decent amount. I like Neil’s voice even though not every song clicked with me. Want to check out more of his work. AM came in clutch since it wasn’t on Spotify.
I thought I would Neil Young but his voice grates after a while. Highlight on this album is For the Turnstiles for me for the laid back folky arrangement.
Neil Young is Neil Young, just a solid record.
Good
Zondagochtend-uit-het-raam-tuur-muziek. Iets van thee erbij. Gewoon English blend, geen gekke smaakjes. Niks mis mee, aangenaam. 3.5
Another Neil Young album, that sounds like Neil Young. While the lyrics might be foreboding and desolate and despairing, the music itself is easy to listen to in his inimitable style. Again though, it isn't enough to really have me coming back for me. When it came to rating this as an album you must hear before you die, I feel as though this one is more one to listen to in order to make you feel depressed. It's fine, but not one I'd have been disappointed with if I had never heard it either.
Similar to Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde - I could easily forget that I listened to this album. It's fine in the background, nothing special.
I suppose it's okay, but I'm really starting to lose my patience for American men with harmonica.
My mom loves Crosby, Stills, and Nash and not really the addition of Young so I don't really know a lot about his music. I think my favorite song was Revolution Blues, there was just something about the instrumental that I really liked. I feel like Neil Young is a pretty good singer, I don't love his style but it's obvious there's some kind of talent there whether it's natural or learned. I also really enjoyed Vampire Blues, just the second I heard the guitar intro I was into it.
Kinda jangly folk rock
I like Neil Young in small doses apparently. Like the banana taffy of musicians, it's good but nobody wants to chew on 8 pieces at once. Song hilights: Rebel Blues and On the Beach.
Some nice chill tunes, but overall it doesn't excite me much.
Ger känslan av en dag på stranden, konstigt nog. Ett riktigt feelgood album, synd att man är en känslokall individ med ett hjärta av sten. Favorit: Motion pictures 7/10 Overall: 6/10 - inte riktigt min stil
Not my favourite Neil album but still pretty solid. The first couple of songs are great but I do find For the Turnstiles a bit whiney and the second half meanders a bit
3.5
Despite him being a pretentious pratt who was smacked out on drugs most of his life, I quite enjoy the sound of Neil Young and his tends toward acoustic arrangements, a lot of which are engrained in my DNA from a childhood of listening to Neil, The Doors, Bowie, Paul Wellar and David Sylvian. Not my favourite album of his, much prefer Harvest or After the Gold Rush. This album wanderingly drifts along in different directions a little bit more than Neil's usual trademark style, to the point where I found a couple of the tracks just plain boring and did hit the skip button halfway through. It's still a good middle of the road album.
Yes Neil is holding his breath and not letting us listen in Spotify. YouTube thanks you for the ad revenue.
I had to be a broken record, but again, this is just a typical Neil Young Album. No idea why it's on the list.
While it's possible there is an excessive amount of Neil Young on the list, I didn't mind this album. The plonking bass and ragged guitar sits well with his plaintive voice
Come on Neil, get back on Spotify !
I think he'd been listening to a lot of Dylan when he did this.
surf's down
I knew you all would come around :)
Alright let’s cut to the chase. The music deserves a 5. Neil Young’s voice deserves a 1. We settle at a 3. Happy?
If Neil Young started his career in today’s world, he would be the SoundCloud rapper from your high school that everyone makes fun of. His voice is akin to a poorly-circumcised cat. I genuinely think I have a better singing voice than him, and that’s saying something. It pains me to give this a 3, but I gotta be impartial here and it’s pretty good musically. It’s a bottom of the barrel 3, but a 3 nonetheless. Also, I finally met the legendary Woofmeow and it was my greatest achievement as a reviewer. All I can do is try to inspire the next generation like she does.
This album almost rose above the bad will I have toward it since it isn't on Spotify and I have to use YouTube but at the end of the day it was some good but not super memorable folk music. Not quite enough to get above the average 3 for a non-Spotify album
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah, it’s really raw yet so delicate and smooth, beautiful across across the board but slows a down a bit quicker than I would have liked, still great though Favourite song: Track 5 - Vampire Blues
Apparently this is a little-known Neil Young album and one that is not rated by its creator. That is a shame because it is really rather good. I enjoyed the juxtaposition between the relaxed music and angry lyrics. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Vampire Blues Date listened: 03/02/23
I liked it, I had a good time! I heard a vinyl rip of it, as Neil would have wanted. come to think of it, Neil probably doesn’t want me to hear a version of this album that isn’t direct vinyl. Nothing really stood out up re-visiting, but I’m open to putting it on again. His mix of melancholy is always home-y to me. It didn’t have the same effect on me as Harvest. But I had a good time!
I've never heard any songs off this album previously. Overall it was a good folk rock album.
"On the Beach" was the best song. The rest was a very easy listen, but nothing to get excited about.
I won't lie, I rolled my eyes when I saw I got another Neil Young album. However, I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't make me want to pack my ear canals with cement. It was actually kind of nice and I didn't mind it.
Kind of good, nothing amazing.
Nice melodies with a bunch kinda boring lyrics
Very average
Dobar album čika Neila. Jebiga, ne volim preko youtubea puštat cijele albume - pjesmu po pjesmu, ali sam u ovom slučaju morao. Vratit ću se na album još koji put do kraja godine.
Better than I expected. Not a huge fan of Neil Young, especially his voice. But there are some beautiful songs on there. 3,5/5
Nicht Bad aber nicht meins
It’s fine.
Not too shabby
Fits well amongst Goldrush and Harvest. Good to hear Neil's sweet early 70s voice.
After reading the reviews I’m really glad that I know zero Neil Young lore so I could just enjoy this one. Which I did!
Not as inspiring or unique work from Neil as his other releases. The slow tempos and dragged our songs become a bit dull and lifeless by the end of the listen.
Preferred the songs at the start of the album than the ones at the end
p331. 1974. 3.5 stars. Classic early 70s singer songwriter fodder. Not his best, but still worth a listen.
Thanks Neil. Some more solid work.
fast and enjoyable.
Not on Spotify
Fine. Standard Neil Young stuff really. Enjoyable for a while and then gets a bit samey/grating.
Again, overhyped
ok
Liked not loved
Pretty good Neil Young album that I had not heard before. Sounds like Neil Young.
Good, not my fav A minha música preferida foi "motion pictures (for Carrie)".
Can’t play this on Spotify. Given average score.
Chill summer classic rock. This my first time listening to one of his albums front to back. Solid playing and vocals.
Walk on- Pop feel, up beat See the sky about to rain- Slow good instrumentals
Wisselvallig country-blues album. Sommige nummers zijn echt wel leuk, maar er zijn ook veel saaie nummers, beetje te langdradig voor mij. Muziek en zang is verder prima. ***
just not a fan of neil young
Favourite songs : vampire blues, see the sky about to rain (beautiful visuals), for the turnstiles Least favourite: ambulance blues (long and rambling), on the beach Overall not a bad album. 3-5
Not on Spotify
3.5/5. Really good.
Un blues suave como una playa en otoño.
Reminds me of dad. Never really listened to Neil Young, glad this was recommended. Super bluesy can’t wait to hear me
Sehr ruhiges, melancholisches Album mit interessanter Backstory. Entspannend zum Nebenbei hören oder für grüblerische Tage.
Womp, womp. Joe Rogan ruined my Neil Young experience on Spotify. ... and, now two years later, I'm cleaning up these forgotten reviews and Neil Young and Joe Rogan are all hunky dory. Which sucks. I was hoping I wouldn't have to endure Neil Young's falsettos for 39 mins. Neil Young is this champion of the small person. His Bridge School concerts are legendary. He supports farmers and was willing to put his streaming royalties on hold after Spotify signed an exclusive deal with Joe Rogan who was spreading misinformation about COVID. He was an original member of CSN(Y) and there are plenty of respectable musicians that hold him in high regard. Neil Young did the soundtrack to one of my favorite Jim Jarmusch movies, Dead Man. It was eerie and sparse and fit perfectly within the black and white film. It is impeccable. Though Vampire Blues and Motion Pictures has grown on me, this album is slow, borderline depressing and is barely tolerable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn2nQMfLqwg
I wouldn't say I have a love/hate relationship with Neil Young's music. I guess it's more of a like/dislike relationship relationship. Doesn't really send me to emotional highs or lows. Because I like a lot of Young's work. Just sticking with the solo work, and ignoring all of the group drama that preceded it, Young has been very influential, written some terrific songs, and built an amazingly solid career around a distinctly worse-than-average voice. Despite Young's deserved accolades of songwriting, I didn't quite know what to make of some of these. A dune buggy revolution? Vampires? Radio interviews?
I’ve listened to this album nearly three times and I’m still having a difficult time formulating a cohesive summary. My enjoyment as a function of track number would definitely show a downward trend as the album moves on. I’m with Ivey that the Wurlitzer piano and steel guitar sound great on See The Sky About To Rain. Walk On might be my favorite song on the album. I dig the harmonies and banjo lead on For The Turnstiles. Vampire Blues is an odd sounding slam against Big Oil. The harmonica/guitar solo interplay on Motion Picture (For Carrie) sounds like a bad take that they powered through. And there is Neil’s voice. Not classically good, but he knows how to use it, most of the time. The back half of the album leaves Neil’s voice sounding thin too often. This album is worth hearing and I’d listen again, but I’m likely to skip side 2 unless I’m in the right mood.
"God damn hippies"
Ok

Solid set of tunes, but nothing that got me out of my chair.
Sedate, unhurried. Certainly not uplifting. Probably pretty good for tea and a book on the couch, but not so good for a drive down to mom's house.
Best Song: On the Beach. The guitar solo that makes up the bulk of the middle of this song is excellent. Worst Song: Revolution Blues. Young's voice just isn't cut out to sing the blues. Overall: I can never decide whether/how much I like Neil Young. His voice is always teetering on the edge of annoying, but it also has moments of possessing this sort of haunting beauty. I wish he stayed further away from trying to be a rock star and gravitated more towards a Willie Nelson, or even an Elliot Smith aesthetic.
Listening to this is like gazing across still waters on a winters day, lost in your own thoughts, with your hot drink gone cold at your elbow. The furnishings are out of date and there is a musty smell but its still homely.
This is a good Neil Young album. Which is to say it’s got some really great songs and some really monotonous ones. I’m certain he has other films on the list. Will they be better?
The first Neil Young album to come up in my journey, suspect I may feel similarly about all of them but we'll see. Have never particularly got Neil Young, despite following lots of artists and bands who sing his praises to the moon. Generally, all nice and good for a Sunday afternoon but it just doesn't grab my attention.
Excellent
A good album from Neil Young here with a couple of classic tracks in "Revolution Blues" "Vampire Blues" "On The Beach" and "Ambulance Blues" some good tunes but not in my top 1001 I'm afraid.
not bad but not good as Harvest
Vamos a Tidal que esto ya no está en Spotify. En principio me gusta más la portada que el disco. Me gustaron "Vampire Blues", "Motion Pictures (For Carrie)" y "Ambulance Blues".
This seems like an odd item to select from Young’s catalog (though that’s partly a factor of his over-representation on this list, my now tired refrain on the thing). Though it’s certainly a notable artifact of its times, with more baroque elements like the Manson connection (drawing a coincidental line to the Recent Beach Boys selection that came up for me there), I think there’s a reason that only Walk On and For The Turnstiles from this made it into the Decade compilation. The longer pieces have interest but don’t rise to that sprawling, psychedelic-country epic quality of Cowgirl in the Sand or Down by the River.
I've got a few Neil Young albums in my collection mostly because (a) I like his music well enough, and (b) he is highly regarded. There are a lot of serious music lovers out there who adore this man's music, even going so far as to say he is the voice of a generation and that his albums are the best of their time. I wouldn't go that far, but I do sense there is more to Mr. Young than I've yet discovered. Every once in a while one of his songs really grabs me. The eponymous track on this album does. "I need a crowd of people, but I can't face them day to day." Although this isn't a state of mind I can personally identify with, I know a lot of people who feel this way, so I try to sympathize. As for me, I learned long ago that people just ain't no good. I avoid them whenever possible.
Great vibes Very enjoyable if you're in a chill mood
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would.
Our fourth Neil Young album. Turns out Neil Young really is all about his couple of great hits. Albums that don't have any of them, like this one, are just a collection of "it's alright I guess".
That's a real shame - I was pleasantly surprised at the start of the album, as I am not a Neil Young fan. The first three tracks were really good, but it got very mediocre after. As a side note: Neil Young is much better when he has a band backing him (like here), compared to there being only him with his guitar and harmonica. 2.5/5

I like Neil Young, but not sure why this album is included in this list. It’s a bit of a bore, buoyed only by For the Turnstiles and Ambulance Blues. IMHO. Sorry Neil.
