Reviews (page 9 of 13)

Listened twice, and surprised myself my enjoying more than I thought.

It's Neil Young.

6.5/10

As usual, I start a Neil Young album thinking “ergh” and then it warms on me until the second listen where I don’t want to turn it off. Not my favourite of his albums I’ve listened to, but as usual I like it. Rating: 3

☀︎pas pire ☀︎pas fini 3.5

Not my vibe, but still some nice songs.

Been doing this a while and I don't think "right artist, wrong album" could be more true. Love Neil but this album is just mediocre at best.

liked songs: Walk On, Revolution Blues Good. The slower songs are definitely less interesting. 3

It's fun for the vibe.

Pleasant. Not particularly memorable but it’s nice.

I didn’t hate it

Easygoing, reminds me of The Eagles

So many sad and melancholic songs on this album.

I kind of felt "ok" about this one, but this is one of the records I'm going to give a second listen to see if anything sticks out to me. I had been looking forward to hearing Ambulance Blues, but it didn't really grab me. 𝘈𝘯 𝘢𝘮𝘣𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘨𝘰 𝘴𝘰 𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘳𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵

Felt more personal than Rust Never Sleeps. More folky, too. Didn’t click with me the same way, though. Will have to listen again.

Zweites Album von ihm, das hier auftaucht, nicht so meins, aber bei weitem besser als After The Gold Rush.

My dad loves Neil Young. I find his music pleasant enough, but I've never quite understood it. This album reinforced that.

revolution and vampire blues were notable but this is generally kinda whiny

Местами шёл тяжело (в начале). Понравился Revolution Blues.

Depressy spaghetti

I love the blues!!

Chilled and mellow. Good songs, well played. Made walking around Tesco almost bearable. But the bloke can't sing in tune. Sounds like a pub singer. I'm interested to see how he can command a young Glasto headliner audience in June with this sort of slow dirgy stuff.

3.5 stars

I like Neil Young's voice. This may not be his best offering but it is decent. 3.5

i was going to complain about this but i ended up liking the second half of it a lot better than the first. i’m still a neil agnostic but it simply isn’t fair to say that i’m a hater. fav tracks: vampire blues; on the beach; motion pictures (for carrie)

Neil Young is not an artist I frequently listen to but as an enjoyer of folk this is a nice short listen that displays Young's unique sound.

I thought this was cool, definitely outside my ordinary wheelhouse. Enjoyed a few of the tracks more than I thought I would but honestly, the problem here is that nothing felt super memorable to me? I liked it though - it was a cool album despite being entirely unfamiliar with Neil Young.

Has its moments, but never rises to the level of some of Neil's other works.

Overall: 6/10 This generator seems to want to get all the Neil Young out of the way early lol I enjoyed this one but it was definitely my least favourite of his albums I've heard so far. The music is pretty chill for the most part while the lyrics are depressing as hell. It's a good contrast actually. If I'm being honest, there were times I felt myself dozing off due to the vibes. It's not his best work but it's enjoyable. Fav Song: See the Sky About to Rain Least Fav Song: For the Turnstiles

I normally love Neil Young but this album was a downer.

Neil is great, but there are simply too many of his albums on this list.

Whatever Neil.

Not listened before Fav tracks: Walk On, Vampire Blues, Motion Pictures

Sounds like a typical Neil Young album to me, not sure how it makes the T1001. Is it because he sounds sorta happy for a change? "Walk On" is a hit, but the album has some serious listening counts with no song under 3M, most over 5M and the title song over 22M, that's impressive. It has staying power and some radio friendly songs. Got some eco messaging way before it was trendy or before most were aware of the problem, ahead of his time there. I enjoyed all of the songs. Love the guitar in "On The Beach". I wasn't super familiar with this album and I've seen him twice so this allowed me to explore songs that aren't radio staples or classics. Enjoyable but not Top1001 to me. Solid 3+ stars.

Den opener fand ich ganz gut. Ab und an blitzt auch mal ein einzelner Song durch, der mir gefällt. Im großen und ganzen fand ich es aber auch recht einschläfernd und langweilig.

Music you can talk over Actually pretty good vibes in the latter half, but frankly pretty boring

A pretty "mid" album in general. Even tough I like Neil Young's music, this album isn't really anything earth-wreckening. It's nice to listen to when you're working, I must say. 2,75 rounded up. Fav song : Vampire Blues & For the Turnstiles

Ho hum. Ok it's part of a trilogy but we're just listening to one of them don't has to stand on its own two feet. It doesn't.

I liked Revolution Blues, See The Sky About to Rain and Vampire Blues. Otherwise, I wasn't in the right mood for this album.

Solid.

Walk On Revolution Blues On the Beach Ambulance Blues

Very depressing indeed

Previously rated: Harvest (2/5) After the Gold Rush (3/5) Tonight's the Night (3/5) Ragged Glory (3/5) ****************************** First half was decent, second half boring. Lyrically interesting as usual, but as a whole, he doesn't do it for me. Best track: Walk On

On every Neil Young album in this project, there's like 3 songs where I think "oh, I get it, I see why people adore him" and then there's 2 songs where I think "those people are morons". Here, at least, the former take up the bulk of the running time.

Album Cover: 7.5/10 Top Songs: See the Sky About to Rain Vampire Blues

This continues Neil Young's streak of being the clear talent amongst Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Not as good as the other one of his that has come up for me previously but enjoyable.

It was okay. Favorite picks: "Revolution Blues", "On the Beach"

Very chill album, good to just vibe to. Not what I was expecting in a good way

Going into this album I had thought Young all sounded very samey, particularly his voice, but this album proved me wrong. At moments I heard Dylan, at moments Plant, but was pleasantly entertained throughout. Really enjoyed Revolution Blues and For the Turnstiles.

A Neil Young album I've never heard of. Not really an artist I've bothered checking out, can't say the songs I've heard from him have been too inspiring. Obviously he's a very influential songwriter so I'm hoping to discover some "hidden gems" in the deeper cuts of his discography. Judging by the album cover I'm hoping for sunny, summery tunes and a chilled out vibe. Walk On Definitely a relaxed start. The instrumental has a lot more depth to it than you'd might expect from a track like this. Slight country vibes from the chorus and the steel guitar. The background vocals are subtle, but used to great effect. The lyrics are fairly simple, but has some nice wisdom in them. Decent start. 3.5/5 See The Sky About to Rain Slower tempo, seems to be building to something. It's pleasant enough, but doesn't really go anywhere. The instrumental bridge is kinda cute. Don't really like the repetitiveness of the melody. Never ever seems to want to end. Bordering on being boring. 3/5 Revolution Blues Sounds fairly standard musically for a blues rock track of this type. Apparently this song is about Charles Manson, and from his perspective too, which honestly is interesting enough to bump it up all on its own. With that out of the way, the instrumental really grew on me, really digging the bass work, the guitar is also really groovy. Clever little song, the vocals have some really cool imperfections that make them stand out. Love the sinister ending. Fascinating. 4.5/5 For the Turnstiles I like how the banjo is mixed. Not sure about the vocals on this one. Can't exacly relate to the stuggle in the lyrics, however it does feel like a peek behind the curtain, which I can appreciate. The simple instrumentation and the untraditional vocal delivery makes it feel like a somber campfire song. Not usually my thing, but I get the picture. Decent. 3.5/5 Vampire Blues Honestly a bit heavy handed with the oil industry critique. They need to be called out though, so appreciate the effort. Don't really care for the mellow blues sound of this. Has very little momentum, and feels really sluggish. The lyrics aren't interesting enough to cover for the slowness of the track. The playing is fine, but generally not a huge fan of this style. Average. 2.5/5 On the Beach Very dramatic. Feels personal. Vocals are performed with a lot of emotion. Pretty guitar solo. Would've hoped for some more interesting composition for a track this long. Definitely an important track for the artist, but doesn't really translate to a very engaging track. Perhaps I'd appreciate it more if I was more familiar with the artist. Could see it being powerful for some, for me it ended up being a bit boring by the end. Fine. 3/5 Motion Pictures (For Carrie) This guy sure hated being famous at the time of writing this album. Quite sad and hopeless. Emotionally written and delivered. The instrumental feels down to earth and folksy, liking the harmonica. Held my attention throughout despite being really slow and sparse. Really good piece of songwriting. Even though the subject matter only relates to a select few he manages to bring it down a level where the feelings of burnout and disillusionment suddenly seem more human and relatable. Good. 4/5 Ambulance Blues Really nice guitar line. Confusing lyrics, had to look it up, and wow that's a lot of lore to unpack. Feels almost rambly. Really enjoy the way the other instruments come in. Calming and relaxing. Feels reflective. While they feels sort of disjointed the lyrics have some ear-catching lines that are either interestingly written or feel thoughtful. Decent. 3.5/5 Liked it about as much as I expected to. Can't really say I was blown away at any point, but still feel like it added something to my day. What I did not expect was how somber, sad and reflective this album was and how much time was allocated to what I feel were very personal tracks. Could really feel how impactful some of the songs were to the artist himself. He's a really good lyrical writer, spawning several moments of poetic phrasing and punchy conclusions. Can't say I have any complaints other than some if the slower songs had me lose interest at a few points. Would also like to comment on that it feels like this album would probably be enjoyed more if you're already a fan of Neil Young to begin with, as much of it seems to reference his experiences and feelings. I could see this being a hardcore Neil Young fan's favourite album of his, simply from how personal and at times poetic it feels. Decent enough experience, has moments I'd return to. 3.5/5 leaning more towards 3/5 Fave song. Revolution Blues Least fave song. Vampire Blues

just don’t like his voice

I used to think this album was great, back when I was a junkie. Now not so much. Take from that what you will. 6/10 Mediocre when sober

Something clicked after trying to listen a couple of times. Really liked motion pictures

Neil Young - On the Beach Really spot on with the title on this album. Not really a huge Neil Young fan after I got an introduction from him with his "Ragged Horse", which I thought was pretty weak, with a lot of country. This album however has less country on it and more rock instead. The album starts with Walk On, the best one on there, where it briefly gives you an idea of what the album will sound like. See the Sky About to Rain though is by far the most spot on in terms of the mood of the album, really chill but having that beach vibe to it. Similar to Walk On is Revolution Blues, with it's riffs and catchy hooks, really up-beat. But then there are songs like For the Turnstiles and Vampire Blues, which to be honest it's not bad, but it's just country folk music, so yeah. The title track also fits really well into the theme of this album, being chill but also personal to listen to. Then there's a sweet short country song, which was actually pretty good, with the lyrics being emotional at times. Finally the album ends with Ambulance Blues, and it's a fantastic way to end an album like that, with the riffs and how the song builds up more and more. While there are some good songs on here, the overall inconsistency it has, with the fact that the middle isn't as good as the first or last songs on here makes it hard to enjoy at first, unless if you are a country/rock fan. Overall personally, this wasn't bad. This is good. 1.- Walk On = 9/10 2.- See the Sky About to Rain = 8/10 3.- Revolution Blues = 8/10 4.- For the Turnstiles = 5/10 5.- Vampire Blues = 6/10 6.- On the Beach = 8/10 7.- Motion Pictures (For Carrie) = 7/10 8.- Ambulance Blues = 9/10 FINAL SCORE: 7.5/10

hát kitartóan próbálom szeretni őt, de még mindig unom.

Denne platen har hakket mer fokus enn Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, men langt mindre energi. Jeg liker begge to cirka like godt. Men denne var litt vel tilbakelent for min del. Det hadde gjort seg med litt mer futt mot slutten. Man får nok mer ut av musikken om man deiger seg på ei strand slik som på bildet. See The Sky About to Rain og On the Beach var pene låter. Revolution Blues var engasjerende. Resten ble litt småkjedelig. Jeg skjønner fortsatt ikke helt "greia" med Neil Young. Jeg er uansett gira på å høre hans mest anerkjente albumer.

(Insert any word) Blues

This was an ok album

It was alright

Neil young is good but never really gets my juices really flowing. Vampire blues is a pearl though.

A great album to have on this type of list!

It’s ok. It starts off awfully but gets better. Not my favorite Neil Young.

The Canadian from Winnipeg produces an easy listen album with his great voice and blues-like tones. 6.4/10.

It's fine, but I don't really get why Neil Young was so successful. There's nothing here that grabs my attention or makes me want to listen to the album again.

Soothing voice idk what he was saying but it sounded good 😄

I like neil young, and this didn't do it for me. I can't pin why?

On The Beach is a great track, otherwise a bit too twangy and sleepy for me

I liked this one. A little slower pace.

This is decent. Kinda cozy.

Just about scrapes three. It was fine.

Decent album but there are much better outputs from Neil

Enjoyed this more than I expected

A couple of standout songs but didn't do loads for me.

5.5/10

Neil Young at his most laid back and acoustic. The last half especially is particularly slow and contemplative for a Young album. Not necessarily my favourite of his offerings, but by no means bad. Best Tracks: - Vampire Blues - Ambulance Blues Worst Tracks: N/A Rating: 7/10

Fine, chill

Decent 70's music... but it kinda fades to the background. Nice guitar work though. 3/5

Never listened to this before. I struggle with Neil Young. Little stood out, but pleasant enough.

It didn't make me feel like I was on the beach but I liked it anyway

There's a few good songs on here, especially Vampire Blues, Revolution Blues, and For the Turnstiles. Overall though, I don't think it compares to After the Gold Rush or Harvest, or even Rust Never Sleeps. It's interesting that he thought this was his escape from the "middle of the road". I think this album is way more MOR than the other two!

Pretty nice, some songs i’d play on a road trip. i’d def listen again paying more attention

Sehr nett Sehr sympathisch

Ocena: 3 scooby chrupki co spadły na podłogę ale pies i tak je zje

This album had some cool parts but those cool parts never came together to make particularly good songs. Neil Young has some good albums but this isn’t one of them.

Neil Young el mejor! Aunque, la verdá, este no es de sus mejores discos.

Very easy listening record. Neil Young has such a distinct voice that sets him apart from other folk rock singers. Pleasant harmonies and mood throughout.

I enjoyed it but wasn't blown away. It did get pretty slow, deep and rough on side B. My favorite two songs were the last 2 and Revolution Blues. 5 = all time F2B with individual moments of brilliance 4 = F2B 3 = Individual moments of brilliance and mostly coherent album 2 = solid. 1 = not an interesting album

Great album, too folksy for me though

Solid folk album.

An artist I don’t entirely get. Not unpleasant to listen to but not blown away

It's alright, not much else to say. Like I'm sitting here trying to think of other things to write in this review and I can't think of any other then it was alright. Guess I'll just keep Rockin' In The Free World! DOOT DO DA LOOT DO! DOOT DOOT! Fave Songs - Walk On, See The Sky About To Rain, Motion Picture (For Carrie)

lounge album, very good at conveying interesting lyrical content but just doesn’t go anywhere. Not my taste

noja, kann man sich mal wieder anhören

Didn’t blow me away but wasn’t offensive.

Pretty good Neil Young. I have not heard most of these songs and enjoyed them for the first time. I wasn't blown away but it was a great listen and I'm sure I will put it on again. He has a nice blend of country and folk that is pretty chilled out.

A day at the beach with Neil Young looks like a jolly affair...... His voice is as whiney as ever so a whole album is a bit of a struggle. There's flashes of brilliance but mostly it's just not my cup of tea.

I'm not a Neil Young fan but this album didn't annoy me as much for some reason

There's just too much Neil Young in those list. This one was not annoying, like much of the other stuff, and some of the early tracks were nice, but it didn't stand out in any way other than that.

Folksy

Chill vibes. Havent listened to lyrics much but makes me think he’s talking about the problems of the world Folk? Rock? Bluegrass?

lovely

Okay. I don't hate this one as much as all the other Neil Young albums thus far (three?? already?? please no more...). This one does not showcase his nails-on-a-chalkboard voice as much as the others.

Very mellow, pleasant album. Quite melancholic at times, very dreamy / hazy overall. Great tunes to decompress after a hard day or just relax.

This was a fun and interesting country album

Enjoyable, but not his best. I can never figure out why his voice doesn't bug the hell out of me, though; I really like it.

Not my favorite of Neil’s, but not bad.

Gotta appreciate the variety here, bongos to banjos, organs to harmonica. He even let's a sick turkey sing for him on a few tracks. Very kind of him. Dad rock, except my dad likes Queen more.

This album introduced me to a vibe it could not maintain. Started quite upbeat and cheery but with each passing song seemed to get more dbuzz and a tad too instrumental for my liking. Degradation.

Made me want to do a road trip in the sun lol. Instead listened to it walking home in the snow!

alright. listened to it while in the sun which added to the vibe. didn’t hate it but didn’t love it.

Not his best

Plaisant

A couple of great songs - Walk On and Vampire Blues. Something so mysterious and unconventional about his voice - seems like it should be grating and annoying but it never is. 3⭐️

Enjoyed it, first venture into Neil Young's tunes.

this is a 70's folk rock album that you unwillingly get exposed to either by radio or because of your dad. one of those albums that's best listened to as background music, perhaps favourite track: revolution blues least favourite track: vampire blues

On the Beach is Neil Young's fifth solo album, and the second of the "Ditch Trilogy," the trio of albums that are seen as follow-ups to his incredibly successful album, Harvest. The album was not well received at its release; the songs address anger and alienation, and the production was intentionally rudimentary. The album's repute has improved considerably as Young's career has continued. The album does not include any of Young's bigger hits, but nonetheless, On the Beach is regarded as a significant part of Young's catalog. The songs show Young's tendency to create raw, introspective folk music.

Di solito la voce di Neil Young mi strega ma qui c’era qualcosa di profondamente sbagliato, in certi punti era proprio insopportabile

Most summaries refer to this album as melancholy and it's pretty evident in both the lyricism and overall atmosphere. Excellent guitar work and definitely a unique step away from the folkier Young I'm used to.

If I had known this list was compiled by apparently Neil Young's #1 fan, I might have reconsidered undertaking this project, but we're nearly 100 albums in so it's too late to turn back now! I'd say this is lightyears above 'Ragged Glory' but not as good as 'Everyone Knows This is Nowhere'. This album is quite bleak in ways that range from what feels like a sigh of desperation ("Walk On", "Motion Pictures"), to bitter and angry ("Vampire Blues", "Ambulance Blues") to just dark ("Revolution Blues"). The man certainly has a lot of feelings. I'm tired of writing about Neil Young, really, especially knowing 'Harvest' and 'After the Gold Rush' will surely also be on this list. This album sounds like a Neil Young album, just without any familiar tracks. 6/10

Pretty good, wasn’t sure about this but it was good

I listened to this on a long car ride. I enjoyed it but found myself tuning it out. But when I tuned back in, I liked it.

Not Neil’s best, but still it’s Neil!

I’m a fan of some of Neil Young’s work, but On the Beach just doesn’t click for me. It has its moments, with Young’s trademark raw emotion and stripped-down sound, but overall, it feels too meandering to fully enjoy.

To me it just sounds like a random Neil young album was put on the list, it’s good but not amazing. My early reviews were too harsh as he wasn’t on Spotify so I had to plough trough ads so 5/5’s like harvest were 4’s and 4/5’s like the crazy horse stuff we’re rated a 3. So this is the first time I’ve got him while being on Spotify, this is a firm 3/5 though honestly, it’s good but there’s no song the level of needle and the damage done or even there’s a world on here.

I've always been kind of lukewarm on this one. I think it's fine. I prefer the first half to the second. A lot of people think this is Neil's best album, which I just don't see. "Revolution Blues" is probably my favorite. 3.5 Stars.

Pretty Chill. The second best album called On The Beach after Chris Rea.

It wasn't really for me

More enjoyable to me than most Neil Young recordings, but still not my favorite. The lyrics were especially morose.

Very similar to the previous Neil Young album on this last, still not a fan.

I would need to give this album another listen, and possibly hear more music from Neil Young. This was a slower more introspective piece.

Wouldn’t seek it out, but also wouldn’t change it if it came on

One of the songs he sounded so much like Willie Nelson, but the rest of the songs were stronger, and pretty nice.

Good album

Sad old dad music

Love Neil Young, but not strongest album

I’m listening to this on a dull December morning, and this album is a bright and breezy day of an album, which is lovely. I like Neil Young, and this album is nice enough - but I’m not sure we need this one on the list when there is already plenty of his other stuff there.

Before listening: I feel like I won't like this that much, not that interested in 70s as a whole. I do really like the album cover. Listening: I actually quite like the instrumentals, not super into the lyrics, they feel a little basic at times. His voice isn't great at some points. I really like the funkier bass ones but not so into the slower ones. I really like the more politically motivated/commentary lyrics, about the end of the 60s etc. "I guess I'll call it sickness gone, It's hard to say the meaning of this song" is great. I still don't love his voice, though... Final reactions: Half the songs were bangers, half dragged for me. I don't love his voice, I think that affected my enjoyment a fair bit. Decent, though. Standout songs: Walk On, Revolution Blues (actually a banger), Vampire Blues, Ambulance Blues (I'm sensing a theme here)

Used to be a massive fan - this isn’t one of his best but still enjoyable

It's relaxing to listen to, I'll give it that. It definitely matches the vibe of being at the beach and listening to the languid guitars. However, nothing really stood out to me besides the opening track. So it's going to be just decent for me.

While the lyrics and themes are nice, the instrumentals are too reminiscent of country to my tastes. The voice of Neil is also not going to be a hit with me. I can still appreciate his writing though.

Not as bad as I was expecting. Quite accessible.

Another Neil Young. My god it never ends. I actually thought this one was ok, but WAY too many on this list. 3/5

Very blues-y and enjoyed the harmonica. Can’t say any of them hit really hard for me but it was an agreeable listen

Something tells me this isn’t going to be a romp at the beach. Isn’t Neil Young the most serious man on earth?? Well. Only one way to find out. Ehhhhh this one is actually very beachy. I wanted introspection and misery to be honest. Not a terrible song, but not necessarily for me. Again, I just want more from this. The darkness was there, and the guitars soaked in reverb near the end are pretty cool. I also feel like the vocals are an acquired taste and I haven’t fully acquired it yet. Also, harmonica is a death knell for any enjoyment. Whoa, Neil is getting upbeat. This one is appealing to me far more. Odd, fun lyrics and an atmosphere of slight dread. Great. Singing songs for pimps?? A benefit concert for pimps perhaps? Somebody needs to buy them canes. I appreciate that about Neil. Always looking out for the little guy. Providing walking aid to our nation’s most beleaguered demographic, the noble pimp. This song is boring. Another type of blues now. Revolution and vampires, the two genders. And a big spoiler, we have ambulance blues coming up. The three genders. I have to say, this song is cool again. Laid back, yet still with something to say. Even if it is Neil Young saying that he’s a vampire. World is turning, away???? From Neil? Wow. Truly one of the lyricists of all time. Nah he’s good. I do like his turn of phrase. More odd, bluesy sort of music. It’s a little plodding but he’s got the gist of it. Nobody wanted to interview poor Neil. Ah, I actually really like this one. It’s pretty cool. Man this thing is slow. Hoo boy. I’m liking it at times and this thing has picked up heavily since the beginning in so far as emotional depth, but I don’t know about this one. Slow burn harmonica replete with bongos. Not my favourite. Don’t say riverboat. That’s MY thing. Why is it that riverboats conjure up the most cringe I can imagine? Anyway. Neil Young is a heel confirmed. Who is the babyface? Don’t say Lynyrd Skynyrd. That’s a surface level cut for all you diss track fans. Long song. Not my favourite and a weak closer “imho.” Well. First foray into Old Man himself, big Neil. No mentions of the free world, but plenty of blues. From hating the album cover and the first couple tracks, this thing really picked up. Eccentric lyrics, cool atmosphere, but just not enough to say anything fantastic. Thanks Neil, you old Canadian weirdo. Keep fighting the good fight for the free world and indeed, the pimps. 2.5-3 HIGHLIGHTS: Revolution Blues, Vampire Blues, On the Beach

Calm and serene. I quite like it, but it's not my favorite genre.

Another reasonably decent Neil Young album but nothing exciting 3.5*

Solid, but not earth shattering.

Enjoyed it a bit more than the few other Neil Young albums I’ve had. Simple and cute and pleasant, and his voice might just be growing on me? 6/10

3.49 great for breakfast

Too Country

Not my favorite Neil Young album.

I was never a huge Neil Young fan, so i'm going to say it's alright.

in terms of Neil Young albums we've heard, this one was better than some. not bad for a long drive.

This was good but that doesn't justify how much gd neil young is on this list

Boring, but better than most Neil Young albums.

compared to a lot of the other Neil Young in this project, this wasn't bad

I always think country isn't forme until it turns out that it is 3.2/5

achei ok

Well well well punch me in the butt plug, I didn't know Neil Young made upbeat, irreverent music. Good job Neil, nice album.

Very good, nice singing and songwriting, doesn't scratch my itch personally.

Needs another listen 3.5

#78 - just like his previous, the music is pleasant enough but does not stick ...

One of their best

This was alright. The namesake track is good but the rest felt fairly monotonous. Pretty blues-y and cynical in this resigned man wiser beyond his years way so that's cool. I do really wonder if I'm just not a big Neil Young person or if he'll just take time to grow on me, so I'll give this one a 3 like I gave Tonight's The Night, because at least it's pretty short.

Favorite song: Walk On Song I didn't like: Vampire Blues Actual Rating: 3.5 stars. Album was pretty mid and I'm starting to realize I don't love the sound of Neil Young's voice but I did really like the first song on the album so that gave it a bit of a bump in the ranking

2.9 1x

Hmmm, biz unfair. 2 mal Neil Young fast nachenand. Han biz weniger appriciation&motivation gha. Aber hed glaub au biz weniger banger songs druf. Aber guets album. 3vo5 giorgios

hans zwei mal gloset welli immer unufmersam gsi bin pretty chill vo dem wasi mitübercho han guet zum gmües schnibble

ay ay ay here he is again… au sehr glatt aber am nedi sini 2 lieblingslieder sind wieder nöd druf gsi also abzug ih de b-note langsam en liechti genrefatigue am inekicke also hoff ich die neu wuche bringt nöd 70% köntrymusig neil young trotzdem king

Fine album. Didn't like it nearly as much as others like Harvest and After the Gold Rush.

I've definitely heard of Neil, just never listened to him. Heard good stuff mostly and that he's unavailable on Spotify, but this album is so good for me because he was in my listenlist anyway. He's a guitarist I think, that's what I associate him with. No high expectations, but that one review makes me think I'll be fairly impressed. First song, yacht rock vibes already. Feels like it just started, no intro whatsoever. The little country instrumentals was good. This is kinda too basic tho, chorus isn't even that good, verses ain't versing either. Might be a better listen with headphones, but not worth it still. Definitely giving beach vibes, that I can say. Second song, much better start. His vocals are not amusing and I could say is generic. It's permanent wave in a bad way. Not much deep lyrics either, I think. Reallyy confused what to even like here. There's no good production. Instrumental break is kinda good, prolly the best part in the song. Only half the song passed? Already can't take it. It's not even a grower just boring AF. The little progressiveness was fine, but it ended too quickly. The outro is all instrumental and I guess it's not as bad, just slow and not at all entertaining. Well outro has his vocals too and a little bit of Bob Dylan with that instrument I always forget the name of. Third song, better and fast start. Lyrical delivery is good. Songs sound too same tho, hate that here. Feels like he hasn't really worked for this. I don't like that I'm not getting these songs, because I just read smn passionately talk about these songs, it feels like they need context to actually be understood, but my maaan it's music I don't need no backstory to enjoy it, and I somehow can't do that rn, tho yea if i had history with Neil I'd like this more. I do have to say this is by far the best song on the album. 4th song, country af start, full instrumental, sonical change basically. Another read the lyrics to enjoy the song one, I do that after the first listen so I'll obviously not like this at all. Barely any sound is heard honestly, not a full music I'd say. Couldn't be less impressed. 5th song, cunty start I guess. I really thought Neil would blow me away, but this is just not. There's no catchyness, I have no want to learn the lyrics (happens a lot in other cases), no effort in sonical part either imo. This one has catchy lyrics, though that's it. Some weird noises made by the instrument at the end, that's the best part in the song ironically. 6th song, long ass song, no prob with that, but in this album, short songs would be better. This one does have the most listens so it must be good. This is the music to put in the background and just think because I literally did that and it was quite nice. That's funny because music should be the center of attention, especially Neil fucking Young, but this album is a background only for me. Not getting why this is the most listened, but I connected this to my new friend(lazy to explain, future me will get it) so I added it to the playlist. This song grew on me so hard, I'm in love with it idek why. 7th song, slow and sad start. Same follows with the way he sings, which is different from how he sang in the last song I think. Not as good as now I expected it to be after the last song. HARMONICA, THAT'S THE BOB DYLAN INSTRUMENT I WAS TALKING ABOUT, finally remembered the name, and it appeared just now. Now I have history with this song, gotta add. If I add the song to my liked songs, I'll eventually like it, it's just do I want to invest my time in a song which is not that good, that's why I don't add some songs and criticise them, otherwise there's not a particularly bad song to me, they just have to stand out since there are so many of em. 8th song, 8 minutes? And here I thought I was free of this burden since this was the last song. The isabela part was the only part which seemed like a chorus throughout the album. Funny stuff mann, some guy on genius said this one has no chorus and it's notable because of that, the song which just a moment ago I said had the most chorus-like part. Also it's supposed to make me feel sad and stuff I guess, but I'm too happy for that rn, one day I'll get it. Harmonica breaks are literally Bon Dylan coded. Just gonna fully review as I'm listening to the end of this song, nothing will change, and yes I didn't like this one either. Overall I'm not impressed in any way. I would give this 2 stars instantly, but since it made me remember of my friend I give it 3, also I get that I'm not getting it. There is some goodness in there, I just don't care for Neil that much, especially after this, to deepen my likeness in him or this album. When I heard he wasn't on Spotify I thought I was missing out a lot, but maybe I wasn't, still some guy said he had 3 Neil albums already, so I might like Neil at some point, just like I didn't like Dylan at first two albums and only at the third did I get the vibe of why he's good to listen to. Anyway I want more albums from him, just some time later would be better.

None of these Neil Young albums are bad, there are just a lot of them on here.

Pleasant enough

Brilliant album! My first listen, I wasn't in the mood for this... And I was hardly paying attention. So I took a break. Came back to it. Thankfully I did because this record is great and needs to be appreciated by song writers. Not my fav Young album, and I've actually never listened to this in its entirety, but this record had room to grow on me.

The sound of my youth. Great songs but overall depressing. A baby in hand, I would listen to those songs which had sort of a calming effect. However, I wasn't a big fan of his voice. Overall, an OK album.

gött sound men det är något som gör att det inte når högre betyg. jag vet inte riktigt vad. det är dock en stark trea

Rating: 6/10 Just another Neil Young album: pretty bad vocals, good instrumentation and some boring moments. Choice cuts: Walk On, Revolution Blues, Vampire Blues

3.5 Deserves another listen

This guy has influenced so many of the artists I like today, but he doesn’t do anything for me. If I was sitting around the campfire with him droning on with guitar, I’d have to drink a lot more.

Love Neil Young, wasn't familiar with this album though. Kinda sleepy, kinda sad, but still pretty and worth a listen or two. Especially liked See the Sky about to Rain and that wobbly organ sound. 3.4/5

Not great, not terrible. Somehow I feel like that's what the album is comfortable being. It really does feel like a lazy day out. Takes me back to days on the beach where something like this would be playing on some crappy blue portable CD player (it would either be something like this or So Fresh 2003/2004). Alternatively you would probably hear something like this at the 'mancave' of that one distant family friend who's house you only ever went to once for some party. Wish I had a little more to say about the album itself. It's just very easy listening, I suppose I felt more attracted to the instrumentals than the singing. If we have another 7 albums from this guy I sure hope the other ones are as good or better than this. I'd certain take this over derivative britpop with no legacy to it whatsoever.

There is no need for there to be seven Neil Young albums on this list. Have you heard one Neil Young song? Okay, you’ve heard every Neil Young song. The band is good. The lyricism is good. Neil Young’s voice is annoying as fuck.

Great background music. I am a Neil Young fan. But no specific bangers or standout songs. I was really hoping to find a new Neil Young favorite.

The least Neil Young-ish Neil Young album so far on this list. Again, it's fine. There just has to be something I can't quite get behind on his music. Neil seems like a fine person and I wish him the best, but I don't ever foresee myself picking up any of his albums. Yeah, change the voice here and I could probably sit with these for a bit.

This album is around the same age as I am. However I would be a lot fucking happier than this album is had I made the same amount of money as it had.

Nicely done 70's blues rock. First half is really good (prolly 4/5) but the second half falls behind. Good album overall, enjoyable and fun at times. Not much more to say.

Pretty good. Nothing grabbed me and I didn't want to feel sad when I listened soooo

The album info says that Neil Young wrote these songs based on the feeling of alienation and ostracised by his friends after his success. I honestly cant feel that kind of information going to my mind while listening to these songs.

It's ok.

This was fine. Some songs I might listen to later.

i'm sorry mr. young! i know you're a beloved songwriter. it's just not hitting for me for some reason!

Great album, easy to listen to very mellow. would be great on the beach

I didn't recognize a single song from this album, but somehow that's okay. The thing about Neil Young is that he's thoughtful. I find myself just quietly listening to what he has to say. Sometimes I agree with him, sometimes not.

3 stars

Good album full of killer guitars.

Just kinda there, nothing groundbreaking, but solid.

Meh. Neil Young just doesn't do it for me in most instances.

A pretty good listen but not too memorable.

si este fuese un álbum que pondría yendo a la yapla, me quitan el aux y me dejan tirado en chorrera. It’s alright but ugh I was expecting something different. Buen blues tho, i actually enjoyed it. 6/10

Ok, nice, contemplative. Pleasing. Blended. Taupe. Clear. Whimsical. Subtle. Caring. Introspective. 3 stars..

Ein bisschen zu bluesig, trotzdem gut.

good album, i particularly enjoyed turnstiles. wished i could’ve been looking it up as i listened but i was doing dishes!

WOKE Neil Young strikes again! Really liked the first tune, lots of typically prescient political fare. Not his best but very enjoyable.

I had not listened to this one before. Good record

Not a bad album but there wasn't much that kept my interest.

This was a pleasant listen. A little slow and a touch too melancholy, but pleasant overall.

Decent mellow rock album with an overall melancholy vibe. To be expected from Neil Young

3☆/5 08.02.2024

His voice has always annoyed me. It must be an Ohio thing.

Great artist. Has some great songs.

The music is pleasant and sounds nice, but it just fades in the background for me a lot and my brain didn't really latch on to any one track to really stand out. This doesn't mean that I think it's bad. It will just be one of those "Oh I've heard that before but don't remember it" kind of deals Standouts - 3/5

Classic Neil Young sound

I'm sure I've said this before, but I'd like his stuff better if he didn't sing most of it. Plus, this seemed pretty meh, overall.

Bonito. Pero no es mi favorito. See the Sky About to Rain se parece a una de Neil Young.

A bit sleepy for Neil Young. Not bad, but not his best.

I like a lot of Neil Young and his various collaborations. Not a big fan of this album. 2.5/5

I can dig it. A good album title for doing that very thing: chillin’ on the beach. The front end of the album had some more interesting stuff. Backend was a bit slow for my taste, but still worth the listen. It’s nice to hear Young’s voice in a more folksy intimate vibe.

I can dig Neil and liked this album ok. Nothing on it really stood out or escalated it to a great album, but it was fine.

It’s fine. I guess in the right setting this would be cool. But nothing really stands out. And some 9 min songs! Woof 2.75

I liked this. I also listened to it this morning and don’t really remember any of the songs…and so I’m notching back. 3.5/5

A good album, but outshone by other Neil Young albums on this list

FAVTRAXS: On the Beach, Motion Pictures (For Carrie), Ambulance Blues LEASTFAV: Vampire Blues 3/5 (con posibilidad de volverse un 3.5/5 a futuro)

Pleasant folk-rock album, not overly complicated with a voice that isn't particularly nice, but somehow it still sounds good as an album.

A lot better than Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere by Neil Young & Crazy Horse, which came up a few albums ago, this is full of personal, small songs, with a lot of Dylan-esque imagery and delivery and reminiscent to me of Hudson Bell. I liked this and will come back for another listen.

His voice comes off as a bit thin and lacking character, but the music and songwriting here really are top notch and I think it is a fantastic album. Some of the slower tracks don't quite hold up as well though because they don't have that interesting voice to hold them together.

Love Neil young. This was pretty good but not my favorite.

Docked a star for excessive harmonica

Classic sound. Haven’t listened to much Young before but enjoyed this.

Strong start with walk on, but it just drifted on to feel like one endless song from there. 3 stars only for the first song.

I listened to this one on the seaside which was quite fitting, and it was a nice experience. Some of the songs were a little slow and maybe went on for a bit too long, but I still like his style.

The 6th Neil Young and really didn't need this. It's fine by his standards but otherwise I've already forgotten it .

Wasn’t the best, but it was a regular Neil Young album.

Good record. Don’t know if I will listen again.

I sometimes feel weird giving 3s - like ... does that mean i think it's average? Have i given it enough thought or a worthy listen or 2? Or is it really just.... ok? I'm sorta take-him-or-leave-him with Neil - I like some, am annoyed by others, but admittedly haven't listened to all 300 albums of his. I suspect by the time I'm through the 1001+ i'll have put a heavy dent in that. "On The Beach" is fine. It's a 3. It's a mood, a mellow/raw mood, and that could go south real quick for me but so I'm a little surprised it didn't here. There were moments where he almost ventured dangerously close to Leonard Cohen territory which is a strong no-fly-zone here, but the music always seemed to take over even if there's a bit of sameness. Simple as hell songs which I want to be bored with and yet for the most part am not (would skip "Vampire Blues" though, actually that one does suck. Minimal effort lazy waste). I almost just want to sit in one of those beach chairs on the cover - nobody else around - and listen to this in silence other than the surf coming in. So I guess the cover is nicely appropriate. TL;DR: not gonna be a favourite, but something nice to put on at the end of the evening or around a campfire. 6/10 3 stars.

Top chilled tunes

Nice vibes neil young

The first song is Walk On, the audio on the song isn't that good. It discusses how judgemental everyone is of Neil and his music, especially his success. The production is definitely groovy and enjoyable, but I don't think this song fits the narrative too well, I'm personally just not a fan. Next is See The Sky About To Rain, a slower and sadder piece, showing Neil reflect on his sadness. the piano/organ is a good touch, production is good, narrative, sequence and lyrics are al good here and get my approval. After that, we have Revolution Blues. A funky, well, blues groove that shows good production and fun vocals. I think that's really all I can enjoy from it, but the story Neil paints is beautiful, just doesn't fit well narratively, but this music can work easily in a movie, if it hasn't already. Soon later, we have For The Turnstiles. The song features a plinky banjo, which presents a jamming charisma, love the folky vocals layered on the track, gives a beautiful grime to the albums sound. Once again, not really a fan of the lyricism, but everything else about this record has been pretty fun. Eventually, we have Vampire Blues. The production gives some cold hard blues, a real classic sound, organ and all, with Neil reciting about being a vampire. This song fits the album a lot better. Something about a vampire plays well into the idea of identity, belonging, depression, and is funny to think of a vampire on a beach. no complaints here. Speaking of On The Beach, title track follows. The production is slow, and drags, which fits the mood of the album exceptionally, like a cry for help. The lyrics aren't bad either, but they aren't quite dragging me in, it doesn't feel creative, its like a baked potato with no butter. not even salt and pepper, no seasoning, and I like mine spicy, still, not bad, it has moments and merit, I just tend to be a stickler with expectancies. Then, we have Motion Pictures (For Carrie). This song provides a somber tale of a tragic star, who is tired of the fame. This is very fitting to the themes of this record, and, once again, good production, sequenced well, solid final works, truly heartfelt. The final track is Ambulance Blues, also our final "blues" track, and our longest track yet, clocking in at 8:56. The lyrics possibly get the darkest and saddest here, reminiscing, the same as someone ready to give it all up. The production feels like its holding his hand, asking if he's ready, in which he gives a firm yes. very powerful closer, works on just about every level. Overall, this project has plenty ups more then downs, and the downs are minimal, but they definitely drag things down pretty often. Production is probably the most solid thing the whole way through and whats to be most proud of here. And that's it.

Really chilled but interesting and well written lyrics. I really liked the guitar on See the sky about to rain, it’s funky and wobbly.

This one seems a bit more calm than Harvest. I don't like it as much as Harvest either, maybe because the vibes are more chill. It sounds like any other folk artist. I did really like the imagery and metaphor in Vampire Blues a lot. This album was fine to listen to overall. No strong feelings one way or the other.

If Debbie Downer were an album this would be it.

It's whatev. Didn't hate it, just nothing really stood out.

By far the most enjoyable Neil Young album I've ever heard. Great songs. I just wish to God he'd let someone else sing them.

An ok easy listening album

Neil Young's On the Beach is a melancholic yet compelling album that showcases his signature raw emotion and stark storytelling. Although it may not be hailed as his finest work, the album remains deeply engaging and evocative. Tracks like Ambulance Blues and Revolution Blues stand out with their haunting lyrics and distinctive melodies, reflecting Young's introspective and sometimes sombre perspective. The production, while minimalist, complements the album's mood perfectly, emphasising Young's poignant vocal delivery and guitar work. Despite its downbeat tone, On the Beach retains a certain charm and authenticity that resonates with listeners. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 2 STAND OUT TRACK - Ambulance Blues

It's alright, it didn't jump out at me that much though.

I love Young's unique voice and his use of the harmonica. On The Beach (the song) is a masterpiece, but I'm not fussed about the other tracks on this album.

realising maybe i'm just a little indifferent to neil young

De første låtene er fine. Senere kommer banjo og munnspill og musikken er mer folk-preget. Liker ikke det like godt. On the beach er ganske kul 😎

I'm simply not a fan of his style. He's got some songs I really like (Cinnamon Girl, Harvest Moon, Heart of Gold specifically), but they are so few and far between that I don't really enjoy listening to his albums. Would rather hear his hits on the radio every once in a while.

Just another OK Neil Young record. The guy is consistent I'll give em that. He's good in 3-4 song increments, like one side of a vinyl

From the desert yesterday (Marty Robbins) to the beach today. I’ve liked the other Neil Young albums I’ve gotten in this project, but for whatever reason, this one didn’t really click with me today. (I enjoyed it more on the second listen - I’ll say 3.5 for now.) Favorite tracks: Vampire Blues, See The Sky About To Rain

The best ive heard from him so far but still not my thing

So I’m a big Neil fan, and have to admit that I hadn’t even hear of this album… I was more a fan of the Crazy Horse work, as “Live Rust” is my all-time fav – but I digress… Really enjoyed this album, and did not expect Neil basically playing the blues – but absolutely enjoyed it! Sure it’s not at the same level of “After the Goldrush” and all of Neil’s top-shelf tracks, but it’s a solid album all the way around… Favorite tracks included all of the blues titles – so “Revolution”, “Vampire”, & “Ambulance” – but all of the tracks are well-done – even if they are a little on the darker side… It doesn’t hurt that David Crosby, Rick Danko, and Levon Helm, really made “Revolution Blues” pop… Not the greatest Neil effort, but glad that I listened to it, and a solid 3 for me…

nice West Coast folk-rock, no outstanding tracks

It was ok.

Good album. Really like “Walk On”. Not as consistent as other Young albums. 3.5/5 Might listen again

Thanks to the 1001 list, I think I've already listened to enough Neil Young to see that his styles and production vary a lot. I think this album is the most well-produced one from him on the list since his voice is clear (for the good and the bad), and the instruments are all so clear that I think I was listening to some HI-FI stuff on my streaming service (even without a subscription). However, this is by far the worst of his albums on the list. Sadly, the best production was used in the worst music. I think another 3-star rating for another Neil Young album will not hurt anyone.

It sounded like everything else I've ever heard Neil Young do

Loved the energy of the first few songs and then it takes a pretty slow turn that gets a little humdrum. I wasn’t sure what I’d think of a full album of Neil Young’s voice, and I liked it better than I thought I would, but the melancholy second half was just kind of a downer.

Pleasant but boring, no songs that stuck out to me.

Too depressing to go into my regular rotation, but the last few tracks really lay down a melancholy vibe which is sort of cozy in a way. I like the guitar work, and the harmonica and fiddle aren't over the top in the way some folk albums are (looking at you, Bob Dylan)

Neil. 3

good but slightly weird

Never been a NY fan. Don't hate it, don't love it.

Alright

This is a nice easy listening album. Nothing in particular really stands out to me, but I could easily listen to this just about any time.

I wouldn’t listen to this on the beach. But it’s a fine record

Slow but probably a grower. Reminds me to listen to Harvest some time soon.

I'll admit that I've never really found my groove with Neil Young, so it's harder to embrace an album like this, which seems pretty obscure even for Neil Young fans. (As for my ambivalence, I think Robert Christgau's quote (in the Wikipedia page for this album) puts it far better than I ever could: "Something in [Young's] obsessive self-examination is easy to dislike and something in his whiny thinness hard to enjoy.") As with every Neil Young album (and song), though, there's some interesting stuff going on, and it's funny that the "primitive" production/recording of this album seems to be a theme he keeps revisiting (I think one of his most recent albums he recorded solo at Jack White's house in an ancient disc-recording booth). And the stories behind "Revolution Blues" (and Charles Manson) and "Ambulance Blues" make them far more intriguing to listen to than I initially gave them credit for. I'm also incredibly impressed that they were able to produce anything after subsisting on the "Honey Slides" concoction, a truly foul-sounding substance.

While I am usually not a fan, I really enjoyed most songs from this album.

Neil Young's influence and success speaks for itself, but personally I never got the hype. This album has some fun solos here and there, but the lyricism really pulls me out of it. Thankfully, this album isn't very long. If you're into laid back guitars, almost funky bass lines and songs that make remind you of being on the beach with your family, this might be for you. Also, maybe it's just that so many local acts I see sound exactly like this and I'm super sick of this sound. 2.5/5

Honestly, I’m not a huge fan of Neil Young. I prefer his earlier work. This is one of my least favorite of his albums. Still, he is an extremely talented songwriter and because of that, this mediocre album is just that mediocre. I think that if the average songwriter produced an album this poor (on a relative scale) then it would be just about unlistenable. So, kudos, I guess?

nok den mest easy listening Neil Young vi har haft indtil videre. God baggrundsmusik

Is Neil Young technically a good singer? I'd say no. But is he pleasant to the ear? Also no

Wish he wasn't a cuck

It felt like pleasant chill background music to me. But no stand out songs or anything that really moved me. Just fine

Neil Young has an impressive ability to produce songs with a lot of depth with little amount of lyrics and instrumentals. With a voice like his it’s easy to make albums that are darker in tone and feeling. This is definitely an underrated album as Harvest is incredibly popular but this isn’t far off from sounding similar. This is a short album that provides more in 40 minutes than most albums can in an hour. 7.5/10

I reelly like the album cover! 🏵🌻🌼 The album was fine!

It's kinda sleepy, noticing now on the song "On the Beach". The instruments are pretty good and decently interesting. His voice is fine, a little whiney, but decent. Feels like a very mid (3) album. Pretty good, wouldn't mind it being played basically anywhere, but it's a little too sleepy and uninteresting for me in general.

Middling.

Well that was perfect timing, Neil Young's discography was only put back on Spotify within the last few weeks, and today I get my first album of his. This is just a soft, pleasant, enjoyable album. I don't really have much to say about it, since I didn't find it to be that special at all. But it's a solid listen.

Quite ok

Neil Young is to me an entity easier to appreciate tangentially and enjoy casually than really love andcrave deeper dives into. I find so much of his music appealing and easy to like, but never that easy to love. That is mostly due to his too loose a song-writing technique that mostly leaves a lot of room to want a more satisfying tune or a melody or a hook or sth.
