My top Spotify artist of 2021, fuck yeah! I can’t get enough of The Smiths. The emotional, social, political intensity of the lyrics with the one-of-a-kind catchy jangly Marr guitar work is a heady and addictive pairing. It’s a killer combo for me every time.

How do I review this without offending all the cool cats? I found The Smiths whiny when surrounded by their music in Manchester as a kid. Now i've had a break, I can appreciate it more.

One of the best albums of the 80s and this is even without some of their strongest songs from that period that were only released on single!

Yet another one of those albums where the vocals ruin the music. Morrissey can barely stay in tune at times, and the vocal melodies overall are irritatingly repetitive. It is quite strange that this album is on the list, because their next album, The Queen is Dead, sounds so much better. When I listened to it again, I found the difference in quality quite remarkable.

Let's face it, 'Strangeways' is their greatest album. Moz and Marr still come out swinging with this album though (even if it is only a bunch of gladioli). Though Moz may have turned into an insufferable boor and the title track is the worst song on here, it's still a solid album but (I'm saying it again) it's not their best. No matter what anyone may tell you. Best Tracks: I Want The One I Can't Have; That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore

It was alright. I was not familiar with any of the songs.

Though a bit heavy handed at times, Meat is Murder is a classic album. Johnny Marr’s clean jangly guitar and Morrissey’s vocals and unique melodies come together seamlessly to create some of the most identifiable music of the post punk/new wave era. This is not my favorite Smiths album, but it is still top notch.

Morrissey is the worst vegetarian since Hitler, but whether or not he's trying to be, he's pretty funny. The plaintive howl of "I've seen this happen in other people's lives, and now it's happened in mine" from "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" is exactly as straight-faced as it needs to be for the song to work. I feel bad for the members of The Smiths who aren't Morrissey because they seem decent and talented (the bass on "Barbarism Begins at Home" is a particular stand out performance) and Morrissey seems exhausting to be around.

There is something wrong about the title, so I had to stop and think awhile. Then it occurred to me:- the description is factually incorrect. Murder is an action (verb), whereas meat is a product (noun), so you can't compare the two together. Therefore a more realistic description would be "meat is a dead animal". Or to flip it around, killing is murder. But I guess that header doesn't have quite the same impact. Nice guitar sounds though.

Punchy hits and incredible compositions, the Smiths at their very best. Marr’s guitar layers over Rourke’s and Joyce’s rhythms create such a fantastic counterpoint to Morrissey’s dark and bleak lyrics. I tried to like it but there wasnt anything here for me. i can hear some similarities to new order and other bands of the time but nothing grabs me.

It didn't annoy me as much as I expected, but nothing stood out as great either.

Very recognizable vocals by Morrissey, but overall the album doesn't convince. It felt to me like the songs did not really have a very recognizable identity and the whole album was just one (slightly whiny) giant blob.

Politically charged lyrics with no refrain, hence no circling back to whatever point is being made, makes this album tiresome. Sure, not every album is meant to be relatable to everyone, but this one goes out of its way to achieve that it seems. Perhaps if the listener is emotionally charged and looking for statements put to music, this album might make sense. Social commentaries and criticisms are nothing new to music, and they make for great subject matter perhaps even provoking change or awareness. This is an album that sadly is held captive by the political climate in which it was written. The relevance of that period no longer mattering in the present, it would seem that neither do The Smiths.

It takes a special skill to separate The Smiths Morrissey from what he's like now, but I've managed it. All four Smiths albums are wonderful and I expect to see The Queen is Dead and Strangeways Here We Come in the 1001 albums

I'm not really familiar with the Smiths beyond some cultural references and the song "This Charming Man". Album was fine. Didn't really surprise me, pretty much what I expected.

Dreamy vocals at times. I like the account of rhythms.

Absolute classic, what I hate about Morrissey is how great the Smith's stuff is. Truly remarkable music and lyrics takes you somewhere else,somewhere fragile, beautiful and dangerous. Just a shame it was created by an absolute twat.

Hahaha ok I know the Smiths are iconic but I wasn't quite able to appreciate this as much as I should I think. Still some really important 80s sounds (guitar) and classsssssic 80s vocal style. Also last song and the album name are hilarious -- imagine pitching that to your entire band? "Ok what do you think if we write the last song and name the album about being vegetarian?".... Ill have to come back to some of their hits to be converted.

Enjoyable and musically interesting! I'm glad I finally gave the Smiths a go. I liked it but not sure I would listen again, hence the 3 for now.

What more can you wish for Marr's guitar, Morrissey's lyrics and then the ruin it by letting Morrissey sing.

A good album, but not one of my favorite Smiths albums.

My original introduction to the Smiths in 1985. Morrissey and Johnny Marr are amazing. They don't sounds like anybody else and I've always been intrigued by how Morrissey fits such complex lyrics into the music. Fantastic... even the buzzsaws.

A couple of classics

I am an unapologetic Smiths fan and love this album. I've probably listened to it end-to-end over a dozen times and was happy to do it again. Some of the best bass work and hooks in their oeuvre on this one.

18th October 2021 Listened in the morning while working, quiet day. Jen still in Spain so we watched bake off together before the Internet blew up. The Smith's feel like a band of extremely talented individuals who come together to put good stuff out in spite of each other. I didn't like the title track and think they have better material. Plus Morrissey is now a total cock.

This is catchy and has a great 80s feel.

"How Soon is Now?" might be my favorite song from the Smiths, and it was on the US release of this album. I will listen to that track every time. I have heard other albums by the Smiths all the way through, including some 'Best of...' albums. I don't think that I have listened to this album all the way through. Many of the tracks felt new to me, but with the familiar Smiths sound. I would listen to this album again.

Please stop. Lyrically it's a little too prachy, melodically it's fine at best but mostly it's meh. I wanted it to end after 2nd or 3rd song.

Overall I enjoyed this album, which I was surprised about. My favourite songs are The Headmaster's Ritual and Nowhere fast. 4/5 stars just because I felt it sounded a bit repetitive.

Never been much of a Smith's or Morrisey fan. This is the best of the bunch for them in my opinion, but that's really just a "taller than Micky Rooney" award.

Listening to this made me realize that I'd only ever heard The Smiths in passing. They have such a great, unique sound and this album blew way past my expectations

I'm not sure why this album makes me so cross. Maybe I'm disappointed that I missed out on something because I don't, "get it". Anyway, it's wrong and I'm right. NAA.

I enjoyed re-listening to this album, more than previously. Felt that it works as a whole album, rather than any standout tracks. Good guitars, good lyrics.

“Meat Is Murder” by The Smiths (1985) The irony of the cover photo is that a phrase cribbed from the graffiti on the helmet of a spindly Vietnam War grunt is appropriated and transmogrified into a vegetarian scold. Wince. Death-longing gives many of these songs a serious side, but it’s hard to sustain this seriousness in the midst of idiosyncratic moralizing. Disregard for human life is somewhat in tension with excessive regard for animal life. It fails. And the misuse of a word “prophesies” is only fitting for these decidedly un-prophetic lyrics. Morrissey clearly dislikes corporal punishment, either from teachers (“The Headmaster Ritual”) or parents (“Barbarism Begins at Home”). Perhaps his point is that “unruly boys” who undeservedly get “a crack on the head” grow up to wear helmets and inflict a little Barbarism on the Third World. I don’t know. You figure it out. And he obviously despises meat eating (“Meat Is Murder”), hoping to persuade us with a dubious syllogism begging for a minor premise. The song could well have been left off the album, but then what would you do for a title? The lines “I'd like to drop my trousers to the Queen/Every sensible child will know what this means” (“Nowhere Fast”) completely elude me. Don’t they frown on this sort of thing over there in the U.K.? I must have lost my sensibility long ago. But supporting these sometimes self defeating lyrics are musical compositions that are groovy, outré, and accessible all at once (especially “The Headmaster Ritual”, “Well I Wonder”, and “That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore”). Morrissey’s voice has an interesting timbre, but curiously, his frequent falsetto frills continually run to the sharp side of the pitch. This happens so often, the listener simply relaxes into it. I’m not sure that is a good thing. On “Barbarism Begins at Home” (musically the best track on the record), Johnny Marr’s inventive guitar work is pleasant and precise, and the superbly melodic bass by Andy Rourke gives variety to a rhythm that might otherwise be monotonous. Very listenable, but sadly inane. I’m gonna run out for a burger. Anybody want anything? 2/5

Hate that Morrisey's a total piece of garbage because this is really good. My favorite Smiths songs aren't on here but as a whole album it's probably my favorite of theirs.

Johnny Marr is one of my top-three underrated guitarists. I can't stand Morrisey.

A singular band with a singular front man, there’s nobody quite like The Smiths. Highlights - Marr’s playing is superb (and got even better over the years), Lowlights - Morrissey’s schtick gets a little weary over a whole album; his songwriting improves too with later albums - more wit, less sentimentality (and the tunes improve too).

No a huge Smiths fan but enjoyed this and when relistened enjoyed it even more

Gonna do the usual, seperate music from art and artist. But also fuck Morrissey. The album is good, as most of the smiths work is. I like it, made me feel vaguely bad about eating meat, which I think was the goal. Anyway, solid guitar work, writing, and vocals

I know what the Smiths are about and don't mind them, but these vocal lines are really strange... cool but strange. It doesn't always fit though. A fair bit of the time it sounds like he's singing to a completely different song. This is the sort of thing I wanted to like a whole lot more than I actually did. 3/5.

I mean it's pretty bad. The singer's voice dominates every song and it's not enjoyable to listen to. He sings in this weird off tone or something that makes every song sound off. The only compliment I can give is that the instruments sound fine sometimes, but suffer the same problem as the voice in most other cases.

Didn't leave much of an impression - even as an originator of the jangly but dark chorus-tinged 80s sound, the Smiths don't know when to mix it up or cut a song short. The back half here especially drags as 6-minute tracks wear out 3 minutes worth of ideas.

August 27, 2021 This was not bad? A bit depressing.

I'm somewhat indifferent to the Smiths. They have some pretty great singles, but the albums can feel samey. It's groundbreaking indie but nonetheless it feels dreary and self-indulgent. Still good for a listen, and I do like the hapless heartbroken Morrisey persona. 3*

Pretty great music from The Smiths. Morrissey is always a little bit too much lyrically, but it’s still a unique listen. Johnny Marr is a killer guitarist and shines through the whole album.

My third favourite Smiths album, but still a 5. Was gonna go 4 before listening but the guitar work and lyrics alone make it a 5/5.

similar to sound of silver I was familiar with that joke isn't funny anymore, barbarism begins at home and the song meat is murder but loved the song how soon is now but it is not actually on the album or the original album anyway. The Headmaster Ritual - "He does the military two-step / Down the nape of my neck" is a great line about "punishment" in schools from 80s and prior. I Want the One I Can’t Have - "And if you ever need self-validation Just meet me in the alley by the Railway station It's all over my face" considering rumours about morrissey is interesting as in the previous verse he is talking about a guy That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore - is the peak of this album for me - very meloncholic singing but not whiny like the rest - "It's too close to home And it's too near the bone More than you'll ever know" "I've seen this happen in other people's lives And now it's happening in mine" nowhere fast - "I think about life and I think about death And neither one particularly appeals to me" reminds me of a much later robbie williams lyric "I don't want to die / but I'm not keen on living either" but doesn't have the same impact / is not as believable. Barbarism Begins at Home is another high point in a fairly low album. Love the music, lyrics are ok and the singing suits the song but slightly irks me. His "barking" or "ruh"ing is so so odd but he does it in a few songs throughout his career. Meat Is Murder - appreciate it for what it was and when it was but what the hell is this song really. nearly 7 minutes and a closer to an album just truly bizarre they were allowed to release it at the time. musically very very good but morrissey is whiny throughout. 2, meh but won't throw it on again except this joke isn't funny anymore and maybe barbarism but probably not.

Not their best album but excellent nonetheless. Headmaster Ritual, nowhere fast, that joke isn’t funny anymore....We’re talkin all the hits, all the big ones, all the good ones. The he smells crime again, he's out busting heads. Then he's back to the lab for some more full penetration. Smells crime. Back to the lab, full penetration. Crime. Penetration. Crime. Full penetration. Crime. Penetration. And this goes on and on and back and forth for 45 or so minutes until the album just sort of ends...

Have to admit, I enjoyed this more that I thought I would (my expectations were not high) but Morrissey's voice is just so fucking annoying. Most of the songs are very samey but there were a few I was talking my foot to like "well I wonder". "Barbarism..." is a great example of a decent song ruined by Morrissey's wailing.

One of the new Smiths albums I never bought. But this is a classic Smiths sounding album.

Some of the best to come out of the UK in the 80's the rhythm section is on point and the guitar playing is layered with great rhythm and melodies. The grooves are huge for a 4-piece rock band. Even Morrissey works way harder than most vocalists.

The band is really tight and complex, they stretch out songs and keep the album chugging. Then fucking Morrissey moans all over the damn thing. Plus, 'Death for no reason is murder'? Dickhead, there is a reason for killing a cow, I make a hamburger out of it and eat it. Piss off Morrissey.

I only like some song by The Smiths, this album does not have any of those.

Not really for me. I can get how people enjoy it, but seriously it gets far too preachy on Meat is Murder. It’s a fair point but executed pretty brutally, just like the animals are I suppose.

The title track is dour, but the rest of this album is fantastic, musically brilliant, adventurous and generally just really catchy with its overt pop and funk influences and some of Morrisey’s sharpest lyrics (even if he is an insufferable cunt). Now excuse me while I enjoy eating this steak.

Dudes sadddd but i genuinely liked 'i want the one i cant have'; actually i liked most songs in sound but i couldnt undestand that much so i put the lyrics on, cant know if what i get from it that i like is intended or just my best interpretation but isnt that always the case maybe not to this is extent though, some feelings are pretty immature even if theyre worded sophisticatedly lol i wonder how old songwriter/s were at the time. Not the cow sounds lmao. Just googled Morrissey vegan (vegan was the first suggestion) and I’m having a blast just reading headlines and previews of articles. Again music music was ok at times but I can’t connect it’s not my thing

Use of non-musical audio - the falling rain, buzzsaws and cows mooing - really adds to the atmosphere that this album set out to create. I enjoyed the slight dip into more funk elements in some of the tracks, but my biggest issue is the same one I have with all albums by the Smiths - I hate the way Morrissey sings.

Struggled to get through this. Some Smiths songs are alright, but this seems to be an unfocussed mess to me. Not even sure if Morissey is working on the same tunes as the band. But I guess this meandering of melody and tempo is what draws people to it. Definitely not me though.

I enjoy the smiths but only half of the songs here are worth listening to for a non-fan. The title track is Morrisey at his most preachy. This is easily the weakest Smiths album.

Initial thoughts: it's ok, a little bland. Not sure about the yodelling either. Somehow feels pretentious too. I'm bored now, most songs on this just sound the same - glad it's only 9 songs. "Barbarism Begins at Home" has some really weird yelping/dog bark sounds?? Why??? I have reached the final song and I can't cope with the pretentiousness anymore. Overall: boring album, pretentious, adding yodelling/dog yelps/droning/construction sounds/animal noises to a bland song doesn't make it any more palatable. The album itself is directionless - listening to the songs on shuffle would be equally bland as listening in chronological order I imagine. For me, this album has been an exercise in endurance.

This album was OK. Despite the great musicianship going on, I just couldn't get behind Morrissey's droning vocals which ruined it for me.

Don’t know why this is on the 1001 albums list, this is the Smiths’ worst album and there were no highlights for me.

Luckily this album was recorded before we knew Morrissey was A Bad Man. In 1985 he was merely a pompous man with a compelling turn of phrase quite unlike anything that’s cropped up in music before or since. No-one sings about bottoms quite like your man Stephen Morrissey. And yet, the star of The Smiths’ music always has and will be Johnny Marr’s arrangements. The glistening, shimmering, bright counterpoint to Morrissey’s turgid melancholy. The tension between woe and glory as Marr and Morrissey tussle for supremacy is what they are all about. And Marr wins, every time.

In my life I haven't so much as knowingly listened to a Smiths song, let alone an album--a blind spot I've long been keen to eliminate. So this was an exciting task. But also a bittersweet one, as I knew I would be forced to adjudicate on that grey area between not only the album's objective quality and my subjective enjoyment of it but the band's. One listen of one album is no way to do that. And yet there I was yesterday evening, a pawn in this cruel game, my hand forced to commit crimes against music I'd never dreamt of. Reservations and objections aside, I diligently discharged my duty. Here is my meagre judgement: It Was Quite Good. Morrisey's affectedly self-absorbed vocals dancing widdershins around Marr's dexterous guitar lines, ostensibly independent of each other but really in some kind of synch, is immediately arresting. As is the rhythm, is more energetic than I expected. Less so Morrisey's fey digressions and whimpers--clearly there's lots to hear but not much stood out (ON ONE SINGLE SOLITARY SOLE LISTEN, I HASTEN TO ADD). This unusual combination evidently coheres, yet I'm going to be conservative (though fascist may be more appropriate here) because a) my interest was piqued only in short bursts, and b) from this evidence of the band's talent, plus one or two things I’ve heard elsewhere, I suspect they made much better albums than this. And I want to reserve my extra stars for those should they pop up and prove my suspicions correct. And if I start too high--giving this a 3, for example--and then like the next one more, I'll be compelled to give it a 4. But what if I don't think the next one’s a 4? More of a 3. But it’s only by listening to the second album that I realise I've overrated the first. I'll be ensnared in a cycle of overrating The Smiths, which seems both unfair on me and them. Life is hard. And yes, meat is indeed murder.

There was a time before Mozza became a reactionary cunta. It was pretty magic.

Malgré un nom de scène des plus generiques qui n'inspirait rien de bien interessant, comme lors de la grande majorité des albums selectionnés par le gourou Dimery, force est de constater que cet album performé par une troupe de musiciens accompagnée de Morrissey a su me toucher.

сразу стоит оговориться, что между зэ смитс и зэ кьюр я всегда выбирал зэ смитс, и предложенный альбом на данный моментъ прослушан такое количество раз, что адекватно оценить его уже не получится. но с другой стороны могу понять и негатив, ибо сам, помню, ещё в школе пытался данный альбом слушать и весьма желчно отплёвывался потом, так как душа просила митола и ганста репа. но чем старше становился — тем более проникался группой зэ смиты как явлением — фигурой моррисси, его надменным юмором, гитарной работой джонни марра, тугими и хлестикими басовыми рифами этого. ну, их басиста, короче. И на данный момент этот альбом вижу как один из столпов, на котором впоследствии будет держаться большой кусок более современной и привычной нам музыки, будь то рурок, постпанк, индюшатина и прочее непотребство. Лучше бы не держалось, ну да ладно. Непосредственно из претензий могу дать щелбана только песне Rusholme Ruffians, ибо даже меня она начинает душить под конец своей предсказуемостью и отсутствием интересных фишек. Лучше бы выкинуть её вообще нахой или двинуть во вторую часть альбома. А в остальном — очень крепкий, местами боевой, местами меланхоличный релиз под дождливую погоду и ночные прогулки по ярославским брайтан-бич. Кавер на песню «Перемен» группы Кино я бы вообще включил в десятку любимых песен эвер. 5/5

Норм прокачался, в How Soon Is Now? залип немного. Решил пересмотреть Зачарованных (нет).

I dropped everything and listened to this. I'm sorry I just love The Smiths. The queen season 4 has better prepared me for the Thatcher references. Clearly #9 was Doja Cat's inspiration for MOOO!

Enjoyed this more than I wanted to. Good grocery store soundtrack (also I bought steak so clearly the message didn’t work)

I listened three times and had to actively look up online why the smiths don't suck. After doing that search, I think I get it. It's supposed to be funny and sarcastic. He'll say things like "My faith in love is still devout, I might walk home alone tonight" as a biting contrast. He'll also make fun of stupid kids by sarcastically saying that writing a name on your arm means the love is real. He is walking a line where you can't tell if he is being sarcastic or not at times. Is Meat is Murder actually preachy or is it criticizing the approach animal rights people? If you look at it all in a meta way, the depth of the album expands. Well I Wonder is the worst song on the album, while Rusholme ruffians and nowhere fast are the best songs. The bass is good, but his singing is shitty. I'm certain that this band goes over better in the UK because of all the political criticism.

Das Genere mag ich, aber es plätschert so vor sich hin. In der richtigen Stimmung gerne, aber so oft landet das sicher nicht auf dem Teller oder in der App. (Der "Hit" wurde zudem wohl erst später dem Album hinzugefügt.)

I don't think I love The Smiths. The album was interesting and I like their instrumentals. I don't love the vocals.

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: The Headmaster Ritual, Rusholme Ruffians, I Want the One I Can't Have, That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore, Nowhere Fast Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: I love the Smiths, but I don't know if I've found a Smiths album that I adore yet. They all have really good songs, but also songs that I would rather skip. Just as with Strangeways the first half was much better than the second half. Nevertheless, a 4 of an album (Strangeways was also probably a 4 too but I can't change my old ratings). Excited for The Queen Is Dead which is supposedly their masterpiece.

Tough one to rate. Clearly good music, virtuoso guitar work again, great voice and song writing. Not a fan of the constant depressing subject matter and whine to the singers voice. Their kinda the first pop punk emo band, but theyre better and they are pretty much the OGs of the genre as far as I can tell.

Loved this, really into it. My favourite of the new wave / Post punk stuff coz the singer of this band can sing pretty well. Plenty of sick bass lines too. Going for 4 stars not five because I checked out a subsequent album and I think it was better and more varied.

Another blast from the past! Is it possible to feel nostalgic for music you really disliked when it was new? Yes, yes it is. Brought back happy memories of complaining about this soundalike pop pablum to my friends who loved it. Deep-thinking effort to center the venn diagram between brooding and upbeat-cool. Swing and a miss. Still not for me.

With their second proper album Meat Is Murder, the Smiths begin to branch out and diversify, while refining the jangling guitar pop of their debut. In other words, it catches the group at a crossroads, unsure quite how to proceed. Taking the epic, layered "How Soon Is Now?" as a starting point (the single, which is darker and more dance-oriented than the remainder of the album, was haphazardly inserted into the middle of the album for its American release), the group crafts more sweeping, mid-tempo numbers, whether it's the melancholy "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" or the failed, self-absorbed protest of the title track. While the production is more detailed than before, the Smiths are at their best when they stick to their strengths -- "The Headmaster Ritual" and "I Want the One I Can't Have" are fine elaborations of the formula they laid out on the debut, while "Rusholme Ruffians" is an infectious stab at rockabilly. However, the rest of Meat Is Murder is muddled, repeating lyrical and musical ideas of before without significantly expanding them or offering enough hooks or melodies to make it the equal of The Smiths or Hatful of Hollow.

Some good stuff, not a banger start to finish.

Glad I read everyones' reviews before writing mine because I also had the line "Morrissey is an insufferable prick" written in my notes. So I'll just say he's an asshole, but I do love his music. The Smiths developed such a cool sound that so many other bands tried to bite but could never really pull off because Morrissey has such a distinct crooning vocal sound. Baritone I think? Been awhile since my choir days. Anyway, those guitars really drive these songs! Morrissey always sounds so morose but then those guitars come in and sound all upbeat and rollicking and boom theres another great Smiths song. I know its a joke that the Smiths are sadboys to the extreme (I counted and there's only 1 song's lyrics that doesn't explicitly use the word die, dying, or talk about death) but Morrissey's forlorn pining for love and purpose strikes a chord with most everyone, which makes for relatable jams. I know there's vegetarians in this group and I'm knocking vegetarianism but man was he being way melodramatic with that "Meat is Murder" track. "..the unholy stench of murder....you savor the flavor of murder," with cows mooing in the back! C'mon Morrissey. Still though a pretty great album and I will begrudgingly give Morrissey props.

Ruchira: It's quite dreary. Not a vibe. Ryan: The Headmasters Ritual brings you straight into the album but as it goes on and on it becomes a nauseating listen as the jangling strings and voice remain and increase in deariness over the record.

Hatte früher schon leichte Angst vor denen, habe ich immer noch. Liegt an Morrissey, der eine Upperclass-Stimmlage hat, die nicht in mein Pop-Verständnis passt.

Hab ich nie gehört, gefällt mir auch heute noch nicht. Vielleicht das Schlechteste Album von Morrissey.

The bass on this is killer. great tone. I never knew that Morissey was my defacto english new wave vocalist. Yea holy cow the bass work is awesome. i like how the album shifts dynamically and it doesn't fail to grab me.

I came in heavily biased because so many cool bands, (and bands that think they're cool) cite the smiths as an influence and I sort of rolled my eyes at the hipster cred of it. I'll be honest though, I really dug the album! I've heard so many mediocre attempts to create a sound like this from bands that came after, but this all really worked for me. Not something I'd seek often, but delighted to listen through now and again, and have as a treat. Morrissey seems like an insufferable prick though.

man, what can i say about this album that I dislike.......there's not much. The Smiths is one of my top 10 bands of all time, due to their amazing sound, lyrics, and importance of the time and the reach their influence had, even changing people's views on food! This album was also my introduction to Morrisey and that world of music, and it definitely helped shape my taste in music and what i considered to be good music. I mean there are so many good tracks on this album "Nowhere Fast", "What She Said" are amazing, but the entire album is damn near perfect.

This album is depressing. Even looking at the track list it feels downtrodden. Not to say it isn't good, as I do think this is a good album. I've heard singles here and there from the Smiths, it wasn't something that grabbed me but hearing songs like "That joke isn't funny anymore" and "Nowhere Fast", will bring more of their music into my rotation.The instrumentals in this are far more upbeat than the lyrics. which gives it a great quality, it saddens me and gives me hope at the same time. Really good album.

The Smiths are an outstanding band, though I do not feel this is an outstanding album. The songs within just don't go punch for punch with many of their other albums. It's still great music, just leaves something to be desired.

Figuring out the book this thing is based on is British in origin after making the unhappy discovery that Morrissey is behind a whopping 6 of it's entries, which is clearly too much even if you set aside his recent taste for right wing nationalism. The music is fine, the ostentatious doling about MUHDUH I could do without.

I like the smiths alright and this was one of their biggest albums but I can't really get into this one as much. It's weird cause I like the album before this one and the album after this one much more. I'd bet that the latter one, "the queen is dead" is on this 1001 list too. "Well I wonder" is probably my favorite track on the album. Morrissey gets all the glory but Johnny Marr is severely underrated in the US. Moody brooding.

I've never listened to the album before, but I've heard some of the tracks. I love "The Headmaster Ritual". The rest are just ok. I'd prob give this a 3.5 but I am barely rounding down to 3.

The Headmaster's Ritual is 🥵

Kind of a low-key Smiths album. Not quite on the same level as my favorites- Queen is Dead, Strangeways, and Louder Than Bombs. I do love the title track, despite being a carnivore. I think it’s a sincere expression of a deeply held belief.

Morrisey sounds like he is singing in the shower, didn't really like it.

Good album. Enjoyed Marr’s guitar playing a lot throughout the album. I really like and hate Morrissey’s voice at the same time. I like it on its own, but I feel like it kinda sounds the same in each song, although maybe I wasn’t listening closely enough. Wish Morrissey was a better person, I really think he could’ve been if it wasn’t for his massive ego. I think that seeps into the lyrics more than I’d like. Still a good album and would listen to again.
