Reviews (page 7 of 8)
Pretty much nothing here caught my interest. Sounds like the background atmosphere of a dingy, drab, dismal bar.
Was meh about this
Another Neil Young entry on this list. If you like Neil Young, you'll like this. If you don't, you won't. Which yet again show how some artists and genres were considered with great nuance - oooh, this establishes him as an artist and it should be on the list because of that, but on THIS he wrestles with his inner demons like on no other album, whereas on THIS he plays the best guitar he's ever played. Which - over 420 albums into this - is getting supremely annoying, especially because other genres, acts, and countries are treated with a much broader brush if not completely ignored.
I like Neil Young and I like this sound but no songs really stood out for me to want to listen to this entre album again. If it came on, I wouldn't push for it to come off but I wouldn't be jazzed about it either. The intro to Speakin' Out was good
Buen
First? 3/5 Again? 1,5/5
Never heard any Neil Young before. Quickly realised that this is music to avoid.
Just because Rolling Stone magazine says so doesn't make every Neil Young album one that I "must hear before I die". Some of these tracks are well done - "Borrowed Tune", for example - but overall the album is just average "seedy bar rock", and I tire of Neil Young's unsteady falsetto voice.
sad driving with your grandad music, i really liked Albuquerque and new mama. if i had my way there'd be more lap guitar and less harmonica
Well, another Neil Young. Some of the songs on here are great, such as down tempo Borrowed Time, or the uptempo Look Out Joe, or On a String, with that rockabilly swagger that reminded me of CCR. There some okay songs on here, like Albuquerque with that old country-music sound. And then are songs like Tired Eyes and the harmonica soaked Mellow My Mind that can only summed up as the reversal to Viagra. Who needs a cold shower and saltpeter when you have bad harmonica and Neil attempting to squawk notes out this range. Don’t regret listening. Probably will sandpaper my ears off if I have to do it again.
Neil Young again. Respect the hell out him, but there's not a lot he does that I want to listen to. Putting aside the tragic story of this album, it's just not easy to enjoy this. Young's voice is whiny. Compliant rock, hey.
Neil young is great. Solid little album, not my favorite of his stuff. But enjoyable
Well, too bad, it's not really my thing. Cool, but not for me.
For the most part, I really like Neil Young's music. However, this performance is the equivalent of the uncle who comes over for dinner, drinks too much, and then cries about all the wasted years, etc. It's a listless mess. On a personal level, I have a hard time taking someone seriously who is worth $200M on the back of the same companies and corporations that he is constantly bitching about. And it's all about the music, but he hates the fame that comes with putting out a million albums and then touring non-stop. What a phony.
Does Neil Young have nudes of the author of this list? Im 400 in and ive had at least 5 albums. Sure Harvest Moon is interesting, but i dont see anything out of the ordinary here. Yes, his song writing is consistent, but the singing is bloody awful
Tonight's the night we admit Neil Young is overrated. Whether he's alone, with a horse, in a band, or in the sand, his music is the same music your drunk uncle plays before the Thanksgiving dinner. One great song, and an appreciation for harmonica saves this from a one-star ranking. Favorite Song: "New Mama".
Some of the singing was strained but that's part of the charm I guess.
Love him, but didn’t love this. His voice kept coming in and out and sounded strained through much of this. The country vibe is fine, but nothing memorable.
It’s not really rock, and it’s not really folk, and it’s not really country…what the hell is this? I know he’s all honored and respected and stuff, which I suppose means that there are folks out there throwing this on to chill, which I don’t get at all. There’s storytelling, sure, but with most good artists I get a vivid picture of the characters they are telling about. Here I have no idea who these people are, or, more importantly, why. It’s not terrible music, and I could give it 3 stars, but I’m docking it a star because there’s not a single song on here that’s actually enjoyable.
I like it. But I also really don’t like so. He absolutely cannot sing.
Neil's not so bad when drowned or by electric guitar or backing vocals. But when he goes practically acoustic... I found myself physically cringing.
Band’s doing some good stuff, I just can’t get past Young’s vocals 90% of the time. Sure there might be some timely reason for it to sound the way it does but ugh. Grating.
Meh
It was alright, I didn’t love it though found it a irritating after the first couple of songs
Neil Young can be hit or miss for me, and Tonight’s the Night definitely leans more toward the miss side. Most of his albums usually have at least one track that really grabs me, but this one just kind of drags from start to finish. If I had to pick a favorite, I’d go with “Tonight’s the Night – Part II” — but really, it’s just the one I disliked the least. The rest of the album blends together in a hazy, off-key way that I get is supposed to feel raw and emotional, but it mostly just felt flat to me.
Pretty boring album that didn't really feel like it went anywhere with a singer who felt flat the entire time. Nothing about this album stood out to me. Low 2
Imagine a supergroup with members of the Grateful Dead, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan, but the vocalist is your friend’s drunk dad doing a bad Neil Young impression. That would be like this, only this is worse.
Beats me how this guy seems to occupy half the list in some form or another
These vocals, man. No thanks. 2/5
I did not use a private spotify session for this one. This album was about what I expected, I listened to it yesterday and I can't remember that much about it.
What's the big deal with this guy? Neil Young is totally overrated. I was glad when the album was over so I could listen to something better (in this case, whatever arbitrary playlist of "similar" songs by "similar" artists that the Spotify algorithm came up with). Young has always been sub-par as a vocalist but this album takes it to new lows for me. He's frequently flat, his voice cracks in several places in multiple songs. The one song whose lead vocals that stood out to me, "Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown", isn't even sung by him. Does he write good songs? Yes, I guess so (although I can think of very few I like personally). So I am going to magnanimous here (how pompous of me) and give him a 3/10.
Oh Neil, when am going to get to listen to music you wrote that I actually like? I know it's on this list somewhere, and I know it's not your fault that some guy put *so, so many of your albums on this list*, but oof. Another miss for me.
fuck. listen, it's fine, OR WHATEVER, but give it a rest there's no possible justification for including this many albums that all sound like this from this one dude. it has added nothing notable to my pre-death experience
Wow, I lowkey hated this. I will never understand why Neil Young was big. He has a whiny voice, and his songs are boring. There is WAY too much Neil Young on this list. I will not be listening again.
I do like some of Neil You ngs songs - mostly the upbeat. I really liked the song Come On Baby Let’s Go Downtown. The rest sounds like typical Neil Young. Overall, an ok album to me.
Eh
can appreciate good music, dont like folk.
After the Gold Rush & Harvest aside, I don't usually enjoy Neil Young albums quite as much as I expect too....but damn this really missed the mark. Easily the least I've ever liked an album from him. 2.5/5
Tbh I got bored about halfway through and gave up. Not his best
Didn’t love it. A bit too 70’s for me. Sounded like something my dad listened to - not in a good way.
Im only recently getting to the point where i can enjoy neil young's songwriting. He is a great writer but it’s always been so hard for me to get past his voice and delivery. This album wasn’t enjoyable for me
I feel like I'm repeating myself in Neil Young reviews, but he just can't sing.
Didn’t really like this so much
Okay, album. Couple of good songs but, not amazing as other Neil Young's albums.
Typical Neil Young, just after you like a song he puts you to sleep with the next one.
Eh. Not my favourite work by Neil and I'm not a big fan of his anyway.
pretty forgetable but not a bad performance. It didnt felt unique or crazy its just in that pool of listenable songs/albums that dont got much to offer for me
What the hell is this? Normally I like Neil but these songs make me think of a bar band saying, "now we are going to play some originals" between Pink Floyd and AC/DC covers.
This was tough. The first side is almost daring you to keep listening. The band sounds good, and the songs are mostly okay, but NY sounds like shit. Not calculated slop, but lazy slop. If you stick it out and get to the second side, it eases up a bit and maybe even feels like it was a decent attempt. This is the album equivalent of a drunk voicemail from your ex. 2.8 (a very, very gracious 2.8)
Didn't really grab me.
I like Neil Young okay, but this was not one of my favorites.

When you put out as many albums as Neil -there are going to be some clunkers. This sounds like some guys that are required to kick out an album every 8 months by their label just f’n around the studio. There are some good riffs and nice moments but generally pretty weak.
it's okay, not the best Neil Young album. some good lyrics about a couple of his friends dying from heroin overdoses.
Repetitively boring. I really dig Americana but not this. Something is off here.
could i write poetry to this? n
Kept going between 2 and 3 as I listened. Settled on a 2 because there's nothing here I really want to revisit.
The singing pulls it down for me
Meh
God, his voice is particularly terrible here. It was a struggle to get through this.
Heh - “Shakey” at best. Not Neil’s finest, I don’t think. I think he is a better singles songwriter than an album man in my opinion. The opening to the song “Tonight’s The Night” is incredible. The rest not as much.
I am grasping at straws here.
Tonight's the Night is an pretty good song. It strikes a note of hopeful desperation that most songs don't explore. But goodness, I felt myself frequently wondering how much of this album was left. I used to like Neil Young, but now I find his caterwauling and country influences to be grating. He's supposed to be a great lyricist, but I don't see it. New Mama was also pretty good. Neil does soft sad songs really well. I might be tempted to revisit that one. But most of the album I'll happily leave behind.
I can't remember anything about this album other than not wanting to listen to it agin to rate it properly.
This was pretty bad
I'm not a Neil Young fan.
If anybody else in the whole world was singing this might be a decent album
Nope
2.5 I like Neil, but this isn’t my favorite. At least his stuff is back on Spotify which makes it easy to listen to him
Don’t overly enjoy his voice or general style but some not bad tunes here and there
Decent but there are better Neil young albums out there.
War mir nicht gut bekannt. Aber nicht meins. Stimme mal interessant, mal schwach.
One of a handful of albums on here where the wikipedia production story entry is the main thing making the pitch for why it's included. I'm not enough of a lyrics man to get past how rough the production quality is on this one.
A bit too rough and not very polished. Not sure if I could see myself listening to this one again
Even though Harvest is an all timer in my mind, I'm starting to wonder if I don't like Neil Young. This is mournful and intentionally not commercialized but it's just also not that great.
Nah not really, maybe cause it was inconvenient to listen on YouTube
Another Neil young album lol
Music for dads to nod along to
Better than I expected but it did not land with me
I've struggled with this bloke for decades. Couldn't stand him when I was growing up on the 70s. There was an album he put out in 89 that spoke to me though, and I started to loosen up my hate of him. Now there are a few select songs of his that I genuinely enjoy listening to (like, CORTEZ THE KILLER), but THIS ALBUM revives my dislike of him. He comes across as a spoiled Marin County kid who's parents gave him money to do whatever he wanted, no matter if he was good at it or not. Hahaha I've never spoken so cruelly about a musician before hahaha
Oh god no, not another Neil Young album! This is far from my taste, sorry.
Bearable but not interesting
Honestly, if you've heard one Neil Young track you've heard 'em all. This album was underwhelming and had no standout tracks, but wasn't unlistenable. 2/5
Der var intet som satte sig fast 🤦
I just don't like his voice
So he's ALWAYS sounded 80, cool l.
I listened. Not throughly because he is boycotting my normal streaming source. Some nice stuff, but I'm not digging deep due to inconvenience
I literally thought "ugh" when I saw what this was.
Dont get me wrong. 2/5
So...whiny. OK, I feel like I should like Neil Young but half way through the first track I was like "how long is this song, it just drags on." Considering that was 1:40 into the album it set the tone. 2 stars at best for me, I wanted it to be more but I just don't love it and won't revisit anytime soon.
Nah, I don't need this in my life. Sorry Mr. Young, but I was waiting with baited breath for this album to end. There wasn't anything "bad" on here, only stuff that doesn't connect with me. I found a few tracks pleasant, but not so pleasant that it's worth me going through this album again to make note of them.
Link to spotify did not work, hence I just picked randomly some songs.
This was my second Neil Young album to get this week, and second Neil Young album overall. I've never listened to this album before, and I didn't care for it too much. The circumstances that lead Neil Young to write this are devastatingly sad (the death of two very close friends/collaborators via heroin overdose), and the the lyrics are wonderfully written. But musically, most of the songs on this album sounded incredibly similar to me, and they just kind of melded together. I tend to enjoy Neil Young, but this album didn't really land with me.
Its okay
wasn't really that striking to me
Raw Neil Young is not necessarily good Neil Young
I don't like Neil Young's whiny, thin voice. Though, I will admit he generally has strong lyric-writing chops. This album seemed stream of consciousness and off the cuff. "Borrowed Tune" was the track that stood out for me and is emblematic of this album, which I did not like.
Yep, still don't like Neil Young.
It's just not for me
MAh
Whinier than other albums. 2/5
I don’t get it. I’m sorry but are we just pretending this man can sing? Favourite song: Tonight’s the night Least favourite: Mellow my mind was like nails on a chalkboard, the singing was so brutal. I don’t even understand how this is on an album.
Neil Young cannot sing.
Meh
Emotional, character-driven bar rock. Very raw. Good folkrock album but not my favourite.
I just can’t stand Neil Young’s voice.
Eh
Just sort of fine
I am a big Neil Young fan but Tonight’s The Night is not one of his best. Is it raw and full of pain? Sure but everything he has ever created is and this set of songs is unfortunately mediocre 5.8/10
This album blows a 3.0. Every song feels like a stumble home from the bar is to follow. I love Neil Young, but the blood/alcohol content is too high for me on this one. My least favorite of his work before 1976.
I like Neil Young and I was fortunate enough to see him play with CSN in my youth. I mean it's a decent album but I like things that are a bit edgier.. This is just lost is a sea of stuff from the 70s that sounds just like it. Hm. One note - think when listening to artists that have multiple entries I almost want to experience them in release order so I can better understand the evolution of the artist. Best Track: New Mama (that guitar intro is pretty sweet followed by some typical harmonies)
If I wanted to listen to someone who clearly can't sing then I'd just listen to recordings of myself. Tired Eyes was espeically painful to listen to. It's not all bad but I definitely won't be revisiting this album. Highlights: Tonight's the Night Lookout Joe
At the end of the day it is just some guy with a weird voice singing his songs. They all sound the same and I am sure have some deep meanings.
This was surprisingly bad. Almost felt deliberately bad. I've never heard anything by Neil Young, but it sounded like a satirical imitation of what a Neil Young album sounds like.
Really wanted to love it bc I love Neil. Sadly, this wasn’t the album that should’ve been selected lol
Shit
It didn't set my heart on fire.
I think I would really like some of the songs with a different voice and instrumentation. I really can’t get past that voice and the instrumentation is too country. Some good songwriting I think but overall not for me. I tried
Honestly glad Neil Young took his music off Spotify. Any chance we can remove it form the internet entirely?
I just don't jive with Neil Young on a musical level. I think the legend and personality of him is great, I love the reverence of other musicians he has. I just can't get past his voice and style. I really wish I liked him more.
What am I missing here? This sounds like a drunken late night jam.
Never knew this one, very early Neil
2/5. Only listened to once so might go up later but I can confirm this is not the best Young album. No song stood out and just felt generally quiet and uninteresting. I understand that it is supposed to be sad, but I've felt more emotion in other records.
hát ezt nem hallgattam végig
Highlights: Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown, Tonight's the Night Leave Em's: Tired Eyes, Mellow My Mind Overall Thoughts: I have heard some really good things about Neil Young and his music, but I was underwhelmed by this album. On several of the songs his voice sounds pretty rough and off-key. I imagine that this 1975 album was released in his "heyday," yet it sounds like it could be a live performance in his farewell tour 40 years later. While the songwriting on some songs was somewhat redeeming there were also plenty of songs that felt shallow. Neil's voice simply fits so much better on louder more rock sounding music, and there was not very much of that on this album which served as a detriment to it. I couldn't even convince myself to like the song named Albuquerque... I hope to head an album that suits his voice better and contains some of his hits. Score Breakdown: 2.767 & 2 ->2.384
The high number of Neil Young on the 1001 list shows his versatility during his career. He has some great albums (especially when together with the Crazy Horses or other partners) and also some albums that are just "meh," like this one. I think I'll probably get more from him on the list, but despite my enjoyment (or not) of listening to this album, it was good to learn how far someone with talent and willingness goes to test the limits of his talent.
meh. nothing here stuck out to me or made me want to listen again. the album was fine as background music but I don't think i'd ever listen to it again. shame because I really like some of neil young's other work, but yeah, this ain't it.
4/10. There's been like one Neil Young album I've liked which made me think maybe I'd start liking his music more, but no, some of it just sounds bad.
Did not like.
Just furthering my hypothesis discovered on Leonard Cohen's "Songs of Love & Hate" review
there is such a thing as neil young fatigue. or is it harmonica fatigue? i suppose this is my first neil young solo album, though i've had 2 albums by neil young and crazy horse, 1 by crosby stills nash and young, and 1 by buffalo springfield. a lot of this album just wasn't my speed. there were some aspects that appealed to me--there were some instrumental sections in "speaking out" and "mellow my mind" that were beautiful. but somebody needs to get that darn harmonica away from young. and i suppose i don't care much for his voice, either. i can respect the driving force of the death of two friends of young's. in fact, i love the unabashed inspiration and grief. ah, sorry neil young.
Another day, another Neil Young album. One thing I will say about Neil Young, he has always been in favor of trying new things, musically. Neil has a signature sound that can usually be picked out, but all of the stuff about his music that exists "between the lines" gets played with a lot. This practice has become a more commonplace thing in today's music era, but back in the 70s, Neil Young was experimenting with different sounds during a time when it could have been a career killer. Additionally, I feel like Neil's feelings and emotions that he was trying to communicate come across exceedingly raw on this album -- something he was no doubt aiming for. All that said, I didn't particularly care for this album. There were glimpses of songs on this album that I enjoyed ("Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown" and "Lookout Joe"), but oddly enough, those songs seem to be some of the lesser enjoyed songs on this album by listeners. I just wasn't knocked off my feet by this album. It may just not be my thing.
Tonight's the Night In general, I like Neil Young. But remember, my liking and disliking of things exists almost entirely in the world of radio, I'm new to this album game. -Tonight's the Night- This highlights the mediocrity of his vocals. Honestly, his vocals are bad in the way Bob Dylan's are bad, yeah, they're bad, but sometimes it works. Either way, this song isn't my favorite -Speakin' Out- Yeah, just okay. -World on a String- Not bad. I like that he knows when to end a song. -Borrowed Tune- The guy is a poet with a good band. I like it. Not too much harmonica, that's appreciated. -Come on Baby, Let's go Downtown- This is the kind of tune that his voice is most adept at. Overall, pretty good. Erica: I didn't like the ones before this. It's like there was a time when the world wanted music to sound like it was being sung by a senile old man, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash. It all just sounds weak. At least on this one it sounded like he felt it. -Mellow my Mind- Okay, this one isn't good. This would be better if sung by anyone else. And had less harmonica. This is the drunk guy in the corner booth at karaoke who won't get up to sing. -Roll another number- This is reminiscent of REK. -Albequerque- The music on this one is really good. The vocals are beginning to grate on me. -New Mama- This is the NY I like. Good guitar, good harmonies. Nice. -Lookout Joe- Not bad, again, effort at harmony, good guitar. -Tired Eyes- Meh, back to the first stuff. -Pt 2- "Sing a song in a shaky voice that's a real as the day is long" Gonna have to disagree. A couple of good tracks on an otherwise overall mediocre album.
Neil Young is one of the guys I like well enough but I haven’t taken a deep dive into his albums besides Harvest Moon (looking forward to Harvest, actually). But this probably wasn’t the one to start with. A little raw, a little rough, a little vocally shaky at times, a little too much for me. I did really like a lot of the arrangements but, like with most of Young’s work, it was a little too harmonica-y for my tastes (I definitely like the harmonica in certain situations but not here). I did like Roll Another Number (For the Road), Albuquerque, and Lookout Joe but I don’t think it makes up for the rest.
Boring boomer music
I actually liked some of it, as it's different to and I guess much better than a lot of shit that is on this list, and it was close to being a "ehh, it's okay for a 3/5", then starting with 'Mellow My Mind' the album just gets worse and worse. The vocals are overall not it, man... Also some songs ('Roll Another Number for example) are just flat out weird and not good. I get it that it's from a dark period of his life full of grief, but that still doesn't make it a better album musically.
I really want to like Neil Young, but for whatever reason his music just rarely clicks with me.
An alright album by Neil Young. It’s not nearly as good as either Harvest or after the Gold Rush. Also prefer some albums with crazy horse. Overall this wasn’t my favorite Neil young and felt like it was very generically Neil young. 5.5/10
Forgot this MF pulled all his shit from Spotify. This is some Boomer music through and through. This isn't terrible, but I really am not much of a fan. This is a 2/5
Getting Neil Young on here is always a pain in the arse now, obviously Spotify is out, I used to be able to use Amazon but they fucked that by making it shuffle only so that's worse than useless. Had to run Youtube as audio through VLC for a tolerable experience. But mainly, because at the end of it all, its a Neil Young album. This isn't even good, folky or folk rock Neil young, its blues rock Neil Young, which can get in the bin. I do have to concede that Mercury Rev straight up pilfered 'the Dark is Rising' from 'Borrowed Tune'. How did they get away with not crediting that? I am glad they didn't however as it would disappear off streaming. Aside from that New Mama and Lookout Joe were alright. Tired Eyes was OK as well. Maybe the album grew into me as it went along, but he did that annoying thing of playing the first song again at the end, again (at least on Hey hey My My he makes the song better the second time), which drained away any goodwill which had built up.
Meh. Neil young is Neil Young. Not for me.
Not a fan of this particular Neil Young album, especially folloing on from "After The Goldrush" and "Harvest" - both of which I prefer.. Yes, some of the songs show real emotion, but to my ears, the vocals on some of the tracks sound off.
Eh
not his best
Nope
I don't know what it is but this album is just not doing it for me at all.
Are you kidding me? We had Neil Young yesterday. Have an open mind. Have an open mind. I continued to struggle through most of the songs, but I did enjoy Borrowed Tune.
Too well-behaved
Exhausting to listen to
Eerste nummer mooi.
Possibly a controversial opinion, I actually do like Neil Young…however this album isn’t my favorite. Some of the vocals just sound straight-up bad and only a few are songs that I’d ever go back and listen to. It didn’t help that he removed all of his music from Spotify and I had to sit through vibe-crushing Vrbo ads between every single song on YouTube. Also i think I’m hungry and cranky. 2.5/5 IMO
Nothing special
mwah, andere album van hem was veeeel beter
Not on Spotify L
I wanted to like this more, but the “raw” style sometimes became him not even trying to hit the notes and it was grating.
Definitely not my favourite Neil Young.
Country Bob Dylan.
Lots of feeling, not a lot of notes hit.
First thing first: this is the 6th Neil Young, solo or not, album I'm receiving here. I like Neil Young, but I think that's over the top. As for the album itself: It feels like an "another" Neil Young album, rather than an essential Neil Young album. The music has aged and not that well. It also feels like the music wasn't that much of a hit back when it was released, either. That is to say, this one is yet another of way too many that should not have been included here.
Never really sure if I'm a young fan. This album didn't do it for me.
Better than I thought
nopte
love neil young but can’t listen on spotify anymore because neil OLD decided to go woke. such a shame, all those great tunes that I’ll never get to listen to now. 5/10 for being a betch. that’s the review.
I keep forgetting Neil Young is a real guy. He's the most forgettable "big artist" I can think of. This music just isn't my cup of tea. A mix of folk, blues and country - three genres I don't particularly care for. The title track was pretty good though. Also notice how he looks like a lion monster on the album cover. Look at the area under his nose and above his mouth. There is no way this guy is human. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.
Another Neil Young album. This one was a bit different but the same result....I did not care for it. I am rounding up mainly because it is better than a one but not a two.
bit boring.
there’s just the thing about his voice that’s just so unbelievably unbearable to listen to. the music was honestly not bad but the whine in his singing makes it so bad.
Nope
I've never been a _huge_ Neil Young fan... his voice is just too nasal-y and annoying to me.
This wasn't on Spotify but I've heard most of it before and it's crap. Neil thinks he's making a big statement taking his stuff off Spotify when he made his millions before it existed anyway. Then he tells small artists that it's bad for them in that condescending "listen to your elders" way, but really he has no clue what he's on about because he's had record companies and minders looking after his music for decades anyway. Typical fair weather hippie piece of shit antics. 2/5.
Meh, I didn't care for this as much as some of his other albums. It's got a few decent songs, though. It's pretty much your average Neil Young record. Not too good, but not too bad.
Tonight's The Night is not one of Neil Young's best efforts and that's saying something. It's a melange of meh. 2/5.
Mid to upper range 2/5. Not awful, but not particularly memorable. Neil Young's voice is a bit ropey for someone so successful, isn't it? Very much a downer after Sister Sledge on Friday, not a bad album but not one I'll be revisiting.
One of NY’s less inspiring albums
Yeah, Neil Young again, this time with a heavy blues influence in addition to his trademark whiny voice. Maybe I'm jsut not in the mood for this kind of music, but I found this album tedious. A lot of fast forwarding was done. 2/5
I'm not a Neil Young fan, and this album has done nothing to change that. Pleasant enough as background music, but it didn't move me in the slightest. Meh.
Neil Young is one of those artists that I really want to like but have a hard time getting into. I know he's had a significant impact on music and it makes me feel uncultured to not be super into his music, but here I am haha. I did like "Albuquerque" on this album, and after going to the Wikipedia page, I can appreciate this album a bit more for what it is -- the rawness, the emotions. I'd be willing to listen to some of his other music to see what it's like, but I don't think I'd revisit this one.
Not my fav of his.
Never been a fan of folk, especially of this era. It's not all bad, it just doesn't catch my attention. 5/10.
Aardig
I've never listened to this record even though it comes right after my favorite Neil Young record (On the Beach). I've heard it's not great and that Young was in a bad way during this time, after two close friends die of heroin overdose. Compared to most of his previous work, this record feels slight. Good piano work, though. And, the pedal steel that started on Harvest and continued through On the Beach is still here. Haunting things a little. That's cool. Still, it's not his best 4-5/5 star work. So, 2.5 rounded down to 2.
Bluesy album with some good performances that get samey. Honestly a sad backstory with a somewhat lackluster album package.
If you thought you might like Neil Young, because his singing is a bit endearing, this album may convince you otherwise. It’s almost a parody at times.
Was he drunk? I mean his voice just does not sound good or appealing at all. Also the mix is all kinds of jacked. The piano is incredibly loud and quiet, and a lot of the instruments have quick changes in their loudness which is really distracting. I think it gets better a bit into the album, but those early tracks do not make this approachable. Some of these songs are alright, but I don't see myself listening to it again.
dude's voice is objectively terrible
frekar mehh. svona fyrir hann
You could group all the uptempo and slow Neil Young songs together and any two tracks from either group would be indistinguishable. There’s an attempt here to jazz things up with some jazzier arrangements, but the sheer repetition and Young’s scraggly vocals just make every track an absolute drag.
I struggled through this one, without really enjoying any track after the first couple. Is this rating artificially low because I feel like I've given everything else a 4? Probably. But this album is uninspiring enough I doubt I'd listen to it again.
I may be very biased here however... I like Neil young... Usually. Not this album though. Maybe it's my disappointment that made me rate it so low. Let's just hope another one of his albums comes along soon and makes things right again.
I do like Neil Young and I love that he is constantly experimenting and trying new sounds. Definitely one of those artists who has stayed true to himself throughout his career. This album is not one my favorites of his, though. Just a personal preference on my part. Can't quite reduce it to words, but something about the sound of the album and style in the playing -- just not my thing.
Whiny old man. Not my jam
I quite like some of Neil Young's stuff. This one was new to me and it was ok.
so, here's the thing. i just can't really stand neil young. his voice has annoyed me since the first time i heard it, and while he can play the guitar, and he definitely gets a great sound out of it, that's just not enough to get me past how f'ing annoying his voice is, and how frankly boring i find this album. i wish i could like him - or maybe i feel like i should - but i just...don't, and i probably never will.
Kind of boring and repetitive. Had some cool musical moments and profound lyrics, just not for me. 4/10.
Not a bad album, but doubt I would revisit. Not sure Neil is my jam. Rating based on my own personal taste.
I just wasn’t feeling this, feels too much like everything else I’ve been hearing recently.
This is the second Neil Young album we got that doesn't include any of his well-known hits. And as it turns out, the difference in quality between his hits and "the rest" is staggering. As a whole, the album is a huge disappointment to me. The instrumentation is quite good, technically speaking. But the songwriting seems completely incoherent. It's all over the place and at the same time not going anywhere at all.
Sorry, but I just don’t need another Neil Young album in my life right now
While listenable, I don't think I'm a big fan of Neil Young. It's not that he's bad, I've just heard other people do what he is doing but better. Sorry Neil! Tonight isn't the night but you do look like Jarod Leto's Joker doing a set as Joaquin Phoenix's Joker.
Knew the title track but was first listen of the album. Gave it 10 or so listens. Neil Young was apparently "... disappointed that it didn't sell as well as Harvest..." holy fekin' moly - what a pile of crap. How did his vocal make the final cut? First track was good and set an atmosphere and Track 3 was a good ole rockin' tune but jayzis mother of the proverbial - some of it sounded like a whiskey soaked 3am lockin down the Docks. Keep on Rockin' in the Free World? No, Neil, don't. I know i keep harping on about it but Harvest was a polished work of art accomplishment with brilliant musicians (but then again, i don't think i ever listened to Harvest sober (or indeed CSNY)... 🤔)
I reckon this is a ranking I'll grow to regret but Neil Young doesn't so much for me. I like the lyrics and I like the music but his voice puts me off. I can enjoy it in small doses but don't need a full album
Nothing special.
Not really my style.
Not particularly fond of Neil Young's music. Just didn't really find it all that interesting
Love Neil though just not my Album.
It was okay.
Has its moments (title track, Albuquerque) but too much of it is a reaction to his previous album and commercial peak, Harvest. Listenable but not overly enjoyable.
Struggling to understand this album’s standing, why it’s held in such high regard. Poor in the most part with only a few redeeming moments
its aight.. deffo good, but not my type :/ but its good if i were a middle aged beer drinking white man! unfortunately i'm not :( actually i do like some of his last songs ! i also checked out his other music, and he's pretty good!
Not really the best of Neil Young on display here imo
Still hate Neil Young.
Struggling to understand this album’s standing, why it’s held in such high regard. Poor in the most part with only a few redeeming moments
I went back to Harvest. I'll never revisit this.
Non essential Neil - ultimately forgettable stuff
Some good, lots whiny.
Tonight's the night? I wish Neil. 21st June 2021 is the night.
A bit easy going for my tastes. All a bit nice and not enough edge. 5/10
Surprised how much I didn’t enjoy this. He’s quite whiney
Probably a 2.5. Was hard not to skip tracks
2 good blues rock songs, the rest disappointing.
Country
The story here is tragic. The music compelling with it's message. Probably not something I would listen to very often.
I like Neil Young. Before this album, I had often asked myself “is there such a thing as too much Neil Young?” I learned today the answer is yes. This has some nice tracks but the whole thing just along at such a middling tempo that Young’s whiny vocals really grate by the end.
Esperaba más... Apenas un pasaje o fragmento rescatable aquí y allá.
The songs are fine, I just can't stand his voice
Empezó bien y luego no.
La verdad no conectó
Te country
Not my cup of tea but can see the creativity behind it
There are more Coldplay records on this "1001 albums you must hear before you die" list than Frank Zappa albums, and that speaks volumes to why a record like this ends up on this list. Boring, uninspired throwaway NY tunes....
I'm fed up of this guy. Worst one yet. Probably another 6 albums to go
Crap. Im over NY on this list
He sings like he's on the brink of death.
Enjoying the energy of speakin' out.
Bleary, grief-soaked rock and loose country-blues built on ragged guitars, stumbling rhythms, raw piano, and cracked, slurred vocals lurches with unsteady intensity. Listening feels like sitting in a dim, late-night wake where songs spill out half-formed between long silences. The resuting looseness feels rough and unfocused.
Tonight is not the night, to listen to Neil Young. I know he has better albums. Go listen to Rust Never Sleeps.
He can't sing. How are people handing 5's to this? 1/5.
Hate Neil young.
2/10 Not the sound for me
The overall vibes of this album were fine. But wow, his voice is so bad. I am really not a fan of how often it felt like he was struggling to reach or hold a note. That was not a very fun listening experience.
Neil Young? that cunts at least 70
couldn’t finish this album..
At least once I week I receive an album on this list so egregiously awful that it begs the question: "Why the fuck I am even doing this project?"
Yhh no
It’s not for me
bad
I don't understand why Neil Young's full back catalogue is on this list? Tepid.
Don’t understand why he’s so beloved…not a fan.
Neil Young should stick to songwriting. This is not appealing to listen to at all. The band is fine, but there's not too much going on there ever. This was a chore to sit through
This sounds like your drunk uncle going to a karaoke bar still yearning to be 25 again.
Tonight's the Night...that I'm finally free from the shackles of having to listen to Neil Young.
Tonight’s the night (like Redman) and apparently our cantankerous old Canadian pal, Neil Young. One of his infinite entries to this list and another chance to disappoint the shit out of me. Coming into this experiment, I hoped Neil Uoung would be a discovery. Sure, rockin’ in the free world sucks pond water, but he has to have some folk credentials, right? WRONG. He stinks at every turn. Please turn my perception around, Neil. I beg of you. One Canadian to another. Tonight’s the Night - I think if Neil Young debuted today, he’d on instagram reels to an audience of regurgitated meme comments like “goes hard on mute.” Hey and on the keys we have Big Swampy Al. We’re gonna keep Rollin’ this big ol’ riverboat down to Mississippi. Speakin’ Out - Just the softest, weakest, WHITEST blues you’ll ever hear. I don’t know if I’ve overloaded myself with bad music on this fateful day, but this is fucking infuriating. Abysmal insult to an iconic genre. World on a String - More listless “blues.” Borrowed Tune - I’d like to send this back please. At least I’m laughing. Holy hell. From the bad harmonica to the far too isolated vocals. I had a free harmonica that came with the purchase of some article of gap clothing in like 2001. I strongly believe that I could put together a performance of similar quality. TRY to tell me I couldn’t perform at least this well. This is bottom of the barrel. The crud that seeps into the wood. Come on Baby Let’s Go Downtown - Come on Baby, let’s leave this concert immediately. Mellow My Mind - The harmonica hoss is back to inflict more harm on the unsuspecting populace. Boring. Roll Another Number (For the Road) - If you take out the pianist (preferably with a blowgun) this is the best song so far. Albuquerque - Enough time has passed, so I’ve begun watching Breaking Bad. Once things leave pop culture, typically I can poke my head into the mix and see if there is anything worth scavenging. I believe old Neil’s music made an appearance in one of the episodes! That’s all I got. This is another bleh song. Should’ve been called “Country Ham.” New Mama - Neil does do better when he layers these Carl Wheezer vocals. Back away from that mic, let production magic make you listenable. Lookout Joe - They’re coming for you. Tired Eyes - You ever get so depressed that you can’t even sleep. You just kind of lay there? If not, that’s what listening to this song feels like. That may be the intention, so good for you I guess? Tonight’s the Night (Pt. II) - Long time readers know how much I like a reprise. Especially when it’s of one of the worst songs on the record. It was at the mid point of this record that I discovered (via RYM reviews) that it is consensus that people believe Neil Young to be amongst the greatest songwriters ever. First of all, these songs are all so incredibly simple at their core, and are muddied by shitty over the top singing and annoying, soft piano playing. I can’t believe how little I like Neil Young. I think he stinks, and is incredibly overrated by the entirety of the music world. It has to something I’m missing, because once again I feel as though I have landed here from a distant planet, where music doesn’t completely fucking suck. I come in peace. 0.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Are you going to finish that Croissant??
Incredibly dull
It's me, not him. I just don't like Neil Young's voice at all.
I can't stand Neil Young for some reason, his voice just sounds bad to me. Couldn't get through the album, this damn album nearly ruined my morning.
I was looking forward to listening to this, but ended up disappointed. Nothing memorable, no real stand out tracks.
I absolutely cannot stand Neil Young, and this album is a distillation of everything I dislike about his artistic output. The music is generic, the lyrics are meandering and bordering on incompetent, and either the man cannot sing, or he badly needs someone to tell him not to strain for notes he can’t reach. Other reviews describe this as unfiltered tragedy, and I can certainly see that, but unfiltered tragedy only works if the performer is actually expressive and capable of delivering. This just ends up whiny and annoying.
Another crappy Neil Young album and this one is ultra bad. His singing is worse than usual and ruins the entire thing.
Well, it was what I expected—and that’s not a compliment. It gave me garage band energy, the kind where you wonder if someone’s drunk cousin is just crashing rehearsal again. I get that it was meant to be under-produced but for me, it laid bare everything I dislike about '70s rock: whiney vocals, meandering jams, and hairy white guys trying to sound like they can play the blues.
He tells a good story but I don't really like his voice
Fuck off. Seriously. He’s not THAT good. Needle and damage done is the best here, and he wrote better. Otherwise I can think of 725 albums that could replace this that aren’t on the list. Seriously fuck off with this shit.
Very forgettable
For as cool as I think Neil Young is, I really wish he made cooler music.
Has it finished yet? Ah, good.
How many Neil Young albums do we need here?
Tonight was shite.
I just can't handle anymore Neil Young y'all, I just can't.
There is not a chance in hell that anyone needs to hear all the Neil Young albums on this list. Neil Young would probably even agree with me!!
over 500 albums in and my #1 disagreement with this list is how much fucking neil young there is in it
"remember Bill" oh let me guess, from the hill "from up on the hill" just put me down
I'm sorry, I just couldn't. This is the third? Neil Young album, and I started it, but just can't finish it. So I listened to Dweezil Zappa instead. At least he can sing!
Dull
I think I just hate Neil Young. This is so whiney???
Not tonight
Another Neil Young record? I understand that it's important to Neil, but I don't think it's a must listen.
This is the worst of Neil young which is pretty bad
if Neil Young has no haters, I’m dead
