The overall vibes of this album were fine. But wow, his voice is so bad. I am really not a fan of how often it felt like he was struggling to reach or hold a note. That was not a very fun listening experience.

Tonight’s the night (like Redman) and apparently our cantankerous old Canadian pal, Neil Young. One of his infinite entries to this list and another chance to disappoint the shit out of me. Coming into this experiment, I hoped Neil Uoung would be a discovery. Sure, rockin’ in the free world sucks pond water, but he has to have some folk credentials, right? WRONG. He stinks at every turn. Please turn my perception around, Neil. I beg of you. One Canadian to another. Tonight’s the Night - I think if Neil Young debuted today, he’d on instagram reels to an audience of regurgitated meme comments like “goes hard on mute.” Hey and on the keys we have Big Swampy Al. We’re gonna keep Rollin’ this big ol’ riverboat down to Mississippi. Speakin’ Out - Just the softest, weakest, WHITEST blues you’ll ever hear. I don’t know if I’ve overloaded myself with bad music on this fateful day, but this is fucking infuriating. Abysmal insult to an iconic genre. World on a String - More listless “blues.” Borrowed Tune - I’d like to send this back please. At least I’m laughing. Holy hell. From the bad harmonica to the far too isolated vocals. I had a free harmonica that came with the purchase of some article of gap clothing in like 2001. I strongly believe that I could put together a performance of similar quality. TRY to tell me I couldn’t perform at least this well. This is bottom of the barrel. The crud that seeps into the wood. Come on Baby Let’s Go Downtown - Come on Baby, let’s leave this concert immediately. Mellow My Mind - The harmonica hoss is back to inflict more harm on the unsuspecting populace. Boring. Roll Another Number (For the Road) - If you take out the pianist (preferably with a blowgun) this is the best song so far. Albuquerque - Enough time has passed, so I’ve begun watching Breaking Bad. Once things leave pop culture, typically I can poke my head into the mix and see if there is anything worth scavenging. I believe old Neil’s music made an appearance in one of the episodes! That’s all I got. This is another bleh song. Should’ve been called “Country Ham.” New Mama - Neil does do better when he layers these Carl Wheezer vocals. Back away from that mic, let production magic make you listenable. Lookout Joe - They’re coming for you. Tired Eyes - You ever get so depressed that you can’t even sleep. You just kind of lay there? If not, that’s what listening to this song feels like. That may be the intention, so good for you I guess? Tonight’s the Night (Pt. II) - Long time readers know how much I like a reprise. Especially when it’s of one of the worst songs on the record. It was at the mid point of this record that I discovered (via RYM reviews) that it is consensus that people believe Neil Young to be amongst the greatest songwriters ever. First of all, these songs are all so incredibly simple at their core, and are muddied by shitty over the top singing and annoying, soft piano playing. I can’t believe how little I like Neil Young. I think he stinks, and is incredibly overrated by the entirety of the music world. It has to something I’m missing, because once again I feel as though I have landed here from a distant planet, where music doesn’t completely fucking suck. I come in peace. 0.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Are you going to finish that Croissant??

I can't stand Neil Young for some reason, his voice just sounds bad to me. Couldn't get through the album, this damn album nearly ruined my morning.

I was looking forward to listening to this, but ended up disappointed. Nothing memorable, no real stand out tracks.

I absolutely cannot stand Neil Young, and this album is a distillation of everything I dislike about his artistic output. The music is generic, the lyrics are meandering and bordering on incompetent, and either the man cannot sing, or he badly needs someone to tell him not to strain for notes he can’t reach. Other reviews describe this as unfiltered tragedy, and I can certainly see that, but unfiltered tragedy only works if the performer is actually expressive and capable of delivering. This just ends up whiny and annoying.

Another crappy Neil Young album and this one is ultra bad. His singing is worse than usual and ruins the entire thing.

Well, it was what I expected—and that’s not a compliment. It gave me garage band energy, the kind where you wonder if someone’s drunk cousin is just crashing rehearsal again. I get that it was meant to be under-produced but for me, it laid bare everything I dislike about '70s rock: whiney vocals, meandering jams, and hairy white guys trying to sound like they can play the blues.

Fuck off. Seriously. He’s not THAT good. Needle and damage done is the best here, and he wrote better. Otherwise I can think of 725 albums that could replace this that aren’t on the list. Seriously fuck off with this shit.

For many he's close to god-like, to me, he's annoying. This album has no merit at all.

This is the Neil Young music that I don't like. Why is this album even on the list? There are virtually no hits and it all sounds the same as his usual high-pitched folky stuff. One and one-half stars. Gaining a half-star because I kinda like the version of "Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown" that The Trey Anastasio Band used to do.

Tried to get into this album. Even after I finally read about its origin story, tried to go back and live with it, but I cannot shake how passionately I dislike this album. It is barely a step removed from being a spoken word album. In my opinion, the music has to be interesting enough without the lyrics and this doesn't feel interesting enough to hold with or without the lyrics. After all, the music is the meat and potatoes and the lyrics are just a condiment sauce. By this time in the 70s, every singer/songwriter driven project is doing this vibe better than this album, and with more interesting song arrangements . Simply don't understand the idolatry for this record. Pretty forgettable. I know and respect that this is someone's favorite album, but it is not one of my mine. Least annoying songs on this album were "Albuquerque", "Lookout Joe" and "New Mama".

This was difficult to get through.

I sometimes tell myself I should listen to more Neil Young as I'm sure he will be right up my street. However the reality of this wish is like the Three Billygoats Gruff, this one didn't do it for me. A tinge of country, way too much harmonica - they should be banned and only used in special circumstances. There were a couple of track that piqued my interest, but on the whole, not as good as Harvest and do wonder why it is on this list. Just a high 1.

I think he had some good ideas, but the execution is just bad... Most of the vocals were dreadful. The instrumentation is fine though.

Boy I sure don’t like this album, it is so boring and I really don’t care for his voice/delivery. The instrumentals are also quite empty, which forces me to contend with just his voice again.

Is this a joke album? I love Neil Young for After the Goldrush and Harvest, but this is just terrible. I think it's the first time on this list I actually stopped before getting through the whole thing. Honestly, this has some of the worst singing I've ever heard on a record. Especially on World on a String, he's both out of tune and out of time!

After I complained about getting two albums that I really liked but couldn’t decide on the rating for, the generator has decided to curse me with an onslaught of albums from around the same time that I dislike. Yesterday was Rod Stewart, which was my least favorite album I’ve heard on this generator, and today is better but not by a lot. This kind of music just really bores me, and Neil Young’s voice keeps careening off course of the melody. Please give me something better, generator.

Why is it that, with the exception of Paul Simon, the best US songwriters can't sing, but insist on trying anway? Nein! Today’s the day to listen to something good und nicht diesen Dünnschiss. Selbst mit Kontext ist das nicht auzuhalten. Neil Young hätte vor 50 Jahren aufhören müssen, Musik zu machen. Wie immer kann ich seine Gesangsversuche bereits nach wenigen Silben nicht ertragen.

Like Neil. This is not very good. Neither his grunge or his folk.

I did not like this at all. Young's voice is just too much for me. I can handle him for one track here and there, but a whole album of that whine is beyond my capabilities.

I remember the first time I ever heard Neil Young was when he showed up at the 1993 MTV Music Awards to perform "Keep on Rockin' In The Free World' with Pearl Jam. My poor little teenage fanboy mind was confused, because one of my favorite bands had sidelined their lead vocalist in favor of some dude I'd only vaguely heard of. I could have recovered from that but to add insult to injury, in and amongst some very awkward movements and fits across the stage, this Neil Young dude was struggling to carry the tune at all. I'm sure that has flavored my perception of Neil Young's work to this day, but I just can't distance myself enough from his voice to even kind of engage in the music or the lyrics at all. This album followed along those similar lines. When the whimpering trio of vocalists started to carry in the first 30 seconds of the first track (Tonight's the Night) I thought, "Welp, here we go again!". By the time I got to nearly breathless screech of "Railroad traaaaaaaaack" around the 2:15 mark in 'Mellow My Mind', I gave up. I'm glad that so many other folks get so much out of this artist's work, but it just isn't for me.

Neil Young? Nah. He doesn't want everyone to listen to his stuff. I will obey his request. F him.

This started off okay but my attention soon drifted off. Not a big singer-songwriter person, so wasn’t really following the lyrics. Got to the end but unlikely to play this again. Seems of another time, and not one I feel particularly at home in.
