Bluesy rock, ok. Not on Spotify as artist thinks they’re bad hit Apple Music etc ok, send to think hi red music makes a difference to most people. Liked tonight’s the night. Very ‘raw’ playing obviously no auto tune on vocals and harmonica, quite difficult to listen to at points especially on borrowed tune. Listened to whilst going to sleep, so that may not have helped!

Neil has just never really been my thing, but I gave 3 stars for respect. More of a taste thing for me.

Really liked "Tired Eyes" Been loving these Young albums, they really have som golden songs inbetween the rubbish. But most of it is really good actually. 3

One of NY’s less inspiring albums

Old shakey moves away from his crisp harvest sound to a more punky style. I prefer his more melodious stuff but this still rocks.

Yeah, Neil Young again, this time with a heavy blues influence in addition to his trademark whiny voice. Maybe I'm jsut not in the mood for this kind of music, but I found this album tedious. A lot of fast forwarding was done. 2/5

I'm not a Neil Young fan, and this album has done nothing to change that. Pleasant enough as background music, but it didn't move me in the slightest. Meh.

I keep thinking I can't stand Neil Young's voice, and he keeps making things that transcend that voice and make it so I really don't care. It's some kind of sorcery. This whole thing threatened to break my heart, and that was even before I read up on the background/inspirations for the album. Borrowed Tune is one of the most poignant songs I've ever heard.

Darn Spotify & Rogan! Now Neil isn't on Spotify anymore had to listen on Jeff Bezos's baby instead. Neil is a musical; hero of mine so I am definitely up for this one! Probably Neil at his most bluesy and most Blue as well. Not a happy album but with real passion for his lost friends. Music at it's most powerful. Love it throughout but tops has got to be the title track, a eulogy for friends. So I love the whole album really but "Tonights The Night", Nils Lofgren's guitar solo on "Speakin' out" "Tired Eyes" and the wonderful live version of "C'mon Baby Lets Go Downtown" great album rightfully on this list I believe.

Neil Young is one of those artists that I really want to like but have a hard time getting into. I know he's had a significant impact on music and it makes me feel uncultured to not be super into his music, but here I am haha. I did like "Albuquerque" on this album, and after going to the Wikipedia page, I can appreciate this album a bit more for what it is -- the rawness, the emotions. I'd be willing to listen to some of his other music to see what it's like, but I don't think I'd revisit this one.

Beautiful album. Neil Young sounds like he shouldn't be able to sing but it fits perfectly with the impeccable songwriting. Big fan of the harmonica parts and the more upbeat tracks.

I've never listened to this record even though it comes right after my favorite Neil Young record (On the Beach). I've heard it's not great and that Young was in a bad way during this time, after two close friends die of heroin overdose. Compared to most of his previous work, this record feels slight. Good piano work, though. And, the pedal steel that started on Harvest and continued through On the Beach is still here. Haunting things a little. That's cool. Still, it's not his best 4-5/5 star work. So, 2.5 rounded down to 2.

This will fly in the face of the last Neil Young review I did where I think I said something to the effect that NY should be a one-man show - guitar, harmonica, and vocal. But, turns out I really like this album. It's got a bluesy rock vibe that I dig. Well done, sir.

Is it possible I have too many records? (No.) Because I'd forgotten that I have this album and I'd forgotten how bloody good, relentless and depressing it is!

Although it has some very strong songs I don't know if this tops my personal Neil Young album chart to the extent it belongs on this list.

Neil Young is like horseradish. It can really make a dish if it's used right and played to its strengths, but far too often it's either diluted to being pointless or coming on faaaaaar too strong. But man, when it hits right.... it hits RIGHT.

Bluesy album with some good performances that get samey. Honestly a sad backstory with a somewhat lackluster album package.

If you thought you might like Neil Young, because his singing is a bit endearing, this album may convince you otherwise. It’s almost a parody at times.

Tonight's the Night is a spectacle of raw, unfiltered tragedy. The opener is emotionally devastating, as Neil Young's voice croons and squeaks, soaring and collapsing through a set of lyrics about his dead friend Bruce Berry. Speakin' Out is wistful, melancholic, and evokes a sense of the band playing to dull the pain. World on a String works surprisingly well either in spite of or due to its roughness, but it's not as necessary as some of the other cuts. Borrowed Tune sketches a portrait of a sad, questioning, regretful artist wasted out of his mind at night's end. Come on Baby Let's Go Downtown is bright and bouncy and painful, as Danny Whitton who was instrumental in Neil Young's previous efforts delivers a posthumous performance that brings the house down. It reminds us what has been lost (the light that no longer shines) and provides a respite from the album's downtrodden tunes. Mellow My Mind is initially the least notable cut here, but its longing search for harmony and tranquility really sticks in the soul. To start side two, Roll Another Number is musically ambitious and describes Young's sense of anger at the industry that stifled the release of this album for so long. After deaths of those close to us, we often view our own lives through different lenses, and systems that once seemed necessary are now just a burden. Albuquerque picks up on the same thread, as Young seeks an escape from it all on what might be the best song he’s ever made. The tenderness and surprising sweetness of New Mama clash with the aggression of Lookout Joe with its wailing guitar riffs. Tired Eyes is delicate, full of regret and calm. Its placid yet beautiful sound is incredible to witness. The second rendition of Tonight’s the Night that closes the album is a necessary resolution to this abrasive, soothing, cynical, mourning, visionary record. Rest in peace, Bruce and Danny.

This was one of the three Neil LPs I had aside from compilations and live albums. That's not a lot of his stuff and  it's hard to imagine how this got on my short list and into my collection but I'm glad it did.   It's a fringe album and there were no hits really. I think the title track is the best known and that song was not the attraction for me. It shows a special side of Neil.  My favorite songs  are: 1. C'mon Baby . . .,  Good ole rock n roll. 2. Roll Another Number, - Lyrics like "I long to hear that lonesome hippie smile" really talk to me. 3. Lookout Joe 4. Tired Eyes. Best song on the album. This song defines singing from the heart. "Open up your tired eyes" means: Stop being dead. Merry Fucking Christmas. Given the significance of the mirror in Tommy, our recent listen to that album has got me to start a playlist with songs that refer to mirrors. Artists  use the mirror to deliver very powerful messages. Tired Eyes will be the contribution from this album. ("What do you mean he had bullet holes in his mirror?"). I am a little worried that it will be a depressing playlist but I will see how it goes. 

I didn’t have much of a chance to listen to this, as I was driving to Ottawa yesterday and my co-judge and I listened to Rolling Stone Magazines top albums of 2021. Like Ragged Glory this LP has a raw, messy, one-take feel. I prefer the less electric bluesy tracks – Neil plays a pretty good piano in Speaking Out. Knowing that the album is about the recent deaths of his bandmate/roadie makes his off-key singing sound more painful.

I just finished watching the series The Vietnam War in HD on Prime and that war ends in 1975 so this album which was also recorded in 75 fits right in with my mood. Lots of folks complain about Young’s voice but I think ol’ Shakey’s voice is part of his charm and distinguishes him from the rest. I’m Canadian so we naturally think he’s a national treasure and although I’m a big fan, I didn’t think there wasn’t any brilliant standout tracks on this record. I know it was written right after the death of two friends so it reflects a lot of grief and sadness, but I think he has many better records.

I actually really enjoyed this album. I went in with pretty low expectations, but I came out pleasantly surprised. Each song tends to have roughly the same feel, but that's not necessarily a bad thing as that energy is the kind where it makes you want to spend some quiet time with friends around a camp fire. Musically, I think the only complaints I have are that his voice is rough around the edges and that the higher-energy songs are not as enjoyable. Favorite track: Borrowed Tune

Was he drunk? I mean his voice just does not sound good or appealing at all. Also the mix is all kinds of jacked. The piano is incredibly loud and quiet, and a lot of the instruments have quick changes in their loudness which is really distracting. I think it gets better a bit into the album, but those early tracks do not make this approachable. Some of these songs are alright, but I don't see myself listening to it again.

While I’m a Neil Young fan, I had never listened to anything from this album, and was pleasantly surprised with the raw intensity of this album. Rock and blues, guitar and piano. Emotional lyrics. Will listen again.

You could group all the uptempo and slow Neil Young songs together and any two tracks from either group would be indistinguishable. There’s an attempt here to jazz things up with some jazzier arrangements, but the sheer repetition and Young’s scraggly vocals just make every track an absolute drag.

I'd heard of Neil Young, but my only real knowledge of him was that he's referenced in Sweet Home Alabama. With that being said, I adored this album! I was actually disappointed with how short it was! Enough that I'd happily buy this on vinyl. The last album that did that for me on this generator was the Bongo Band, that was a 5/5 so... A 5/5 for me.

I struggled through this one, without really enjoying any track after the first couple. Is this rating artificially low because I feel like I've given everything else a 4? Probably. But this album is uninspiring enough I doubt I'd listen to it again.

I may be very biased here however... I like Neil young... Usually. Not this album though. Maybe it's my disappointment that made me rate it so low. Let's just hope another one of his albums comes along soon and makes things right again.

This album has all the elements you would expect from a Neil Young album, great songwriting, great instrumentals especially guitar, but the singing on this one is rough.

I do like Neil Young and I love that he is constantly experimenting and trying new sounds. Definitely one of those artists who has stayed true to himself throughout his career. This album is not one my favorites of his, though. Just a personal preference on my part. Can't quite reduce it to words, but something about the sound of the album and style in the playing -- just not my thing.

I legitimately love whenever the singer for a band is low key kind of shite cause it's like they're saying "fuck you, even if I can't hit all the notes this is the music that's in my heart and I'm going to sing it anyway"

so, here's the thing. i just can't really stand neil young. his voice has annoyed me since the first time i heard it, and while he can play the guitar, and he definitely gets a great sound out of it, that's just not enough to get me past how f'ing annoying his voice is, and how frankly boring i find this album. i wish i could like him - or maybe i feel like i should - but i just...don't, and i probably never will.

Kind of boring and repetitive. Had some cool musical moments and profound lyrics, just not for me. 4/10.

Top Picks: Mellow My Mind and New Mama I quite liked this one. Having listened to a lot of Neil's acoustic stuff, it was cool hearing something a bit more evolved. Having said that, the overall vibe was a bit samey. Aside from New Mama (which was a real breath of fresh air) I found most of these tunes melted together.

This is the second Neil Young album we got that doesn't include any of his well-known hits. And as it turns out, the difference in quality between his hits and "the rest" is staggering. As a whole, the album is a huge disappointment to me. The instrumentation is quite good, technically speaking. But the songwriting seems completely incoherent. It's all over the place and at the same time not going anywhere at all.

Whoa, a big moment for the list. Our first Neil Young album, at least as a solo artist. I'm pretty sure there are a bunch of his on here, so I was hoping for a strong first impression. There are a few enjoyable tracks on here, and I really dug the guitar on Speakin Out, but overall I didn't get swept up in it. I'm not sure if I will with any Neil Young albums. He's a bit like Dylan, but his voice is more whiny to me, and I couldn't get myself to pay too much attention to lyrics. It's decent, but I'll reserve a more serious positive score for something better from Neil. I remain hopeful that he'll have stronger outings on here. Favorite tracks: Speakin Out, Tired Eyes, New Mama. Album art: One guy equivalent of a band photo, and it's black and white. I kind of like the strong contrast here, but it doesn't do much for me. The handwritten text is cool though. 3/5

It’s probably good. I’m just getting sick of his voice

Knew the title track but was first listen of the album. Gave it 10 or so listens. Neil Young was apparently "... disappointed that it didn't sell as well as Harvest..." holy fekin' moly - what a pile of crap. How did his vocal make the final cut? First track was good and set an atmosphere and Track 3 was a good ole rockin' tune but jayzis mother of the proverbial - some of it sounded like a whiskey soaked 3am lockin down the Docks. Keep on Rockin' in the Free World? No, Neil, don't. I know i keep harping on about it but Harvest was a polished work of art accomplishment with brilliant musicians (but then again, i don't think i ever listened to Harvest sober (or indeed CSNY)... 🤔)

La coqueluche de Robert, l'homme le plus représenté de la liste faisait son apparition aujourd'hui. Et on peut dire qu'il frappe fort du poing sur la table. En effet, Neil Young va passer la totalité de l'album à invectiver le serveur du bar au sein duquel il enchaîne les whisky depuis l'ouverture, en matraquant son poing solide sur le bar, un grave "un autre" s'esquivant de sa bouche. Nous finirons cette écoute par quelques vomissements, ainsi qu'un leger coma pour le Neil. Comme on dit de par chez nous, pose la bouteille si tu sais pas boire.

Tonight's The Night is a classic Neil Young rock album. It was created while grieving over the loss of Danny Whitten (guitarist) Bruce Berry (friend & roadie) who both died of drug overdoses. "The whole thing is about life, dope and death" and you will notice it. That is one of the reasons I don't listen to it that often. The sheer quality of this album cannot be denied though.

Like Jack says, this album is all about the context....they recorded it in one day which gets a star for efficiency if nothing else. I don't really like the harmonica as an instrument that much so it gets knocked down a bit for that

Enjoyed this more the second time after reading up a on a bit of context. Certain songs 'hit harder', as the kids says. I'm now willing to give this a hefty promotion to a 3.5. I reckon there's probably a better Neil Young album out there, though.

Ein heterogener Klafter handmade white man‘s Soul, das wohl auch die Verarbeitung der (Heroin-) Tode zweier Freunde dazu geführt hat, so rau zusammengezimmert sein zu müssen. Splitterfaserige 2.6

This was a strange listening experience. Clearly cathartic for Neil to write and perform these songs, but they weren't very interesting for me. Especially given the fact that his voice is objectively terrible. Not sure why he attempts to hit some of the notes he goes for. Despite this, I find myself thinking about some of the songs long after I've heard them. Can't really articulate why. Summary: objectively bad, subjectively good.

Not particularly fond of Neil Young's music. Just didn't really find it all that interesting

There are no tears for Danny Whitten or Bruce Berry here, only a wised-up, hard-bitten rue. But there is some consolation amidst the loss, and it builds across the tuneful Mellow My Mind/Roll Another Number/Albuquerque heart of the record, which gave me a lifelong love of the pedal-steel guitar. I have listened to this record more than any other by a wide margin.

Theres an old saying in my house, if you dont know who sings a song, its probably Neil Diamond. I finished writing that and realised this is a different person. The music was good, Id give it a 3 but i resonated with it a little bit more than other ones ive deemed 3/5 so real rating 3.5/5

It's Neil Young, so of course it's good. Not his best, but still pretty good. But if you've heard Unplugged, then this version of World on a String is disappointing. New Mama is great, not heard that before.

Has its moments (title track, Albuquerque) but too much of it is a reaction to his previous album and commercial peak, Harvest. Listenable but not overly enjoyable.

Вообще не моё чет. Напрягающий кантри-рок, постоянно выключить хотелось, тоже немного голова под конец заболела.

Не, без Хэй Хэй, Май Май вообще не катит. Хоть и понятная, но очень скучная вещь. И даже оставайся она такой и приятно играй на фоне, я бы принял. Вокальные партии к тому же порой относительно оригинальные. Но за несколько прослушиваний эти примитивные нецепляющие мотивы просто раздражать сильно стали. В итоге имею альбом, в котором ни один трек по уху не пришёлся, но несколько в ухо кольнули дилдаком. Тод в Тенях вроде бы высмеивал регулярное повторение в треках слова Tonight. Я тогда просто кекнул, но тут это пиздец какой-то. Я, конечно, понимаю, что альбом называется Tonight's The Night, но за 2 титульных трека, что длятся в общей сложности 9,5 мин, мы слышим название альбома 64 раза. Я ебал, сука, туна-айтс зе най-т тю-дю-тю-дю-дю, туна-айтс зе на-айт... Здесь даже рифмы нет! Фу блять, фу нахуй.

More my speed than I think I expected but can really only imagine myself appreciating this one again at a bonfire or otherwise low key setting in which I'm not the one controlling the tunes but can nod and say "Oh I like this one" when Tonight's the Night comes on.

Non essential Neil - ultimately forgettable stuff

Lovely piano work. Borrowed Tune is one of my favourite slow songs. World on a String is a romping rock stomper.

Speaking of the kneeling young; the youngest girl I ever got a blow job from passed away this week. I used to babysit for her and her older sister back in the early 2000s. Polite, pretty girl, couldn't hold a mouthful of cum to save her life though.

He's an amazing songwriter with a terrible voice, who at times seems to relish deliberately making his voice sound worse. Not sure what to do with that, but his song writing always wins me over in the end.

Not going to lie. Expected to poo poo on this one. I NEED to be in a NY mood and I was NOT yesterday. Surprisingly, this was beyond expectations and actually PUT me in a Neil Young mood. I am a lyrics guy, stripped that from my normal listening routine and really enjoyed this one.

Some good tunes on here with a mix of folk and country rock. Beginning to a feel a little saturated by all the Neil Young, but there are worse artists to be listening to loads of.

Pretty enjoyable listen- I was happy to hear some familiar songs. Tonight's the Night Part II is a great jam.

I wasn’t familiar with this Neil Young album, but it is familiar - Young’s breaking vocals, twangy guitar, harmonica and piano. Good folksy rock, and interesting album history on Wikipedia.

Liked this but it is exactly the sort of thing I listen to. Country based roots folk music done really bloody well. Songs tell a story. Guitar hooks are great. If your not a fan of this Genre however, eI don't think you'll find too much special about it and it doesn't stand out hugely from quite a crowded field. but it is decent... and gets better throughout the album. Lookout Joe is probably my fave track and expect it'll be Bjorns too! 3/5 Just not special enough for a 4 or a 5.

Soothing/reflective

Not especially memorable, guy has a weird voice and it sits strangely between country and folk for me but I guess I didn't dislike hearing it.

Me gustaron bastante las guitarras a lo largo del album, sobre todo en "Come on baby let's go Downtown" (Quizás guarde en mi playlist de canciones viejitas), lamentablemente las guitarras aunque son muy emocionantes en algunas canciones se lucen relativamente pocas veces en proporción a la extensión del disco. No obstante, el resto del disco en general no me llama mucho a regresar. 6/10

Estilo inconfundible de country-rock, con una voz característica y con canciones con ritmo. Para escuchar en diferentes estados. A falta de alguna canción más conocida en el álbum, es bastante completo

Some pretty rad guitar on the solo for Speakin' Out. Roll Another Number (For The Road) is great. New Mama has a cool ending. Solid Neil Young album, but I'm not huge on him. Would say I liked it better than Harvest.

Raw, weird, and good. Cool story about the recording too - they didn’t really let the band that recorded with him practice the songs too much, so none of them really knew them that well. Also didn’t know that the lyrics in Passenger Side from Wilco were making a reference to a song from this album.

The story here is tragic. The music compelling with it's message. Probably not something I would listen to very often.

Un disco a ratos melancólico, a ratos como esperanzador. Hay varias canciones que me dieron igual, pero otras me envolvieron en una atmósfera muy gringa (?). Siento que Cat Power haría buenos covers de algunas de estas canciones. Mi favorita, por la armónica y la tristeza expresada: "Borrowed Tune". 7/10

I like Neil Young. Before this album, I had often asked myself “is there such a thing as too much Neil Young?” I learned today the answer is yes. This has some nice tracks but the whole thing just along at such a middling tempo that Young’s whiny vocals really grate by the end.

This is a sad Neil :( Its good though. 3.5

I do have a soft spot for Neil Young, although I imagine his cracked wobbly voice is an acquired taste. Fave track - "Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown" is a stormer, but also have a lot of love for "Roll Another Number (For The Road)", "Tired Eyes", and "Tonight's The Night"!

A compelling Neil Young album; he's even able to pull off using "Albuquerque" in a lyric. The emotion is strong, and the lyrics are interesting, but the melodies/music don't have me wanting to come back too often.

Das ist mein zweites Album von Neil Young, und hier habe ich direkt das titelgebende erste Lied als eines aus dem Theaterstück erkannt - das war dann auch das Lied, was mir am besten gefallen hat.

I understand why people like Neil Young, but I don't particularly enjoy him, and listening to a full album of his music is a bit of a chore for me. There are certainly some things to like about this album, but, but, but 3/5

Love Neil Young, album is ok but not my fav

I really don't like Neil Young. Like... I really don't. This release from '75 has an undeniable disco stank on 'em. On top of the unappetizing disconess, Neil's voice is... raw and unrefined. Again, not in a good way. More in a, "Oh buddy, maybe you shouldn't try to hit those notes" way. It makes me appreciate the earlier Neil Young album that I reviewed a bit more. That said, after reading the wikipedia article on this album, I think I understand it a bit more. Apparently, this album was written in a time of grief and recorded over the course of two days while Neil was processing the loss of his friends. This DOES have an exceptionally raw feel to it and, for all that I don't think these songs and recordings stand on their own, the album really does communicate the almost nihilistic grief of post-Vietnam era young man.

Pleasant even if it is an album about grief. As you'd expect from Mr. Young, a good blend of folk, blues, and outright rock n' roll. Can't say I'm a huge Neil Young fan, but I do enjoy his work quite a bit. Favorite tracks: "World on a String", "Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown", "Albuquerque"
