Reviews (page 5 of 8)

The guy can write an amazing song but his vocals are terrible at times especially when he sings outside his vocal range. Great example is the last minute of Mellow My Mind. It made he dogs in my neighborhood collectively howl in pain.

He's like Bob Dylan but better. And that's not really a great thing from my perspective but I think it's true, and probably just inflammatory enough of a thing to say to make some people upset. That's just like, my opinion though.

Good. Definitely not one of the better NY albums on the list so far, but good. Just missing that one big song that ties it all together 3

This seems like a fine Neil Young record. Not great by any means. In general I am pretty meh on Neil.

I actually think Neil Young is pretty good, he's a good guitarist, he has a recognizable voice, even if it's not always pretty. I noticed that on this album. "Tonight's The Night" wasn't really his night vocally. And the songs, what about the song. I can't stand the second song, "Speakin' Out". But "Borrowed Tune" is a gem. "Mellow My Mind" is a nice track, but the voice, oh heavens. I have the feeling that even the harmonica sounds weird. Anyway. Most of the songs are OK but not outstanding. Neil Young has made better albums. I think a solid 3 stars is OK.

Very middling Neil Young album. If you're a fan I'm sure it stands out and gets a higher rating, but nothing about this really wowed me. In fact towards the middle and end this effectively became Neil Young white noise. Fun fact, I used to (and sometimes still do) get Neil Young and Neil Diamond mixed up.

Honestly whatever Neil Young. Some songs were decent, some were shitty blues, all were forgettable. Right down the middle 3 stars

Not nad, but it's definitely not his best.

Was decent. I think Neil’s nasally voice is growing on me a bit at this point and this album has some fun tunes. 6/10

Bluesy country-tinged rock. Could have done without the last two tracks on the album.

I think Neil’s voice is a little hard to listen to, but I appreciate the dynamism here. Good mix of sentiments here, with great near-ballads and decent bluesy rock tunes. Stand out track is: “New Mama”

Not quite what o expected from Neil but then it’s Neil so why would I be surprised. Neither loved nor hated it - actually his vocals were better on this than other albums plus enjoyed the keyboards, steel guitar and harmonica on some of the tracks.

Not a big Neil young fan but there was plenty to like on this

Good, but Neil is way over represented in this list.

I add some trouble to finish it. It was cool to listen too, but nothing to keep me to the end.

This was a decent bluesy 70s southern rock album, but I’m not very fond of Neil Young’s nasally whining voice. He’s an acquired taste that I never learned to enjoy.

Fine for Neil Young. A bit too slow and whiny for me, but overall OK.

It was fine. I wasn't really in a space for two Neil Young albums in a row, particularly when Rust Never Sleeps, which I adore, is first. Still, I am a bit of a Neil "homer" and this has some stellar material.

норм

Not harvest moon.

Random thoughts: * Neil Young has put out a lot of music! * I generally dig Neil Young but he will never be one of my favorite artists. * I'll keep trying to appreciate hime more.

Было классно ехать ночью под этот альбом, но я не понимаю почему этого исполнителя так много в этом списке

Blev skrevet i forlængelse af hans venner som døde til noget drugrelated. Meget stripped Down og raw emotion. Country rock ish blues rock med elementer af proto-punk og garage.

A tragic heartbroken album that draws on a few different NY styles. There are the country-adjacent folksy acoustic guitar with twangy arrangements and close harmonies songs, the solo piano ballads, and the hard-rocking proto-grunge dirges. Individually I don't think any of these songs are among his best, other than excuisite desolation of Albuquerque. There are better versions of each of these styles - but together it works perfectly as a deep dive into the darkness of loss and disillusionment. Favorites: Roll another Number, Albuquerque

Talented writer, his voice is not my favourite of Crosby, etc. Other albums have peppier tunes, or more radio worthy, if dirge-like. 3.5/5

I can't remember listening to this now. I think there were some nice songs but it wasn't amazing.

Good stuff, I think I like Neil Young more than I thought I did

Kinda average Neil album

eh not a bad listen but i just don’t love this type of stuff i guess

I like that he goes for the lower regsiter in his voice more often on this one, but there's not any single track to write home about.

Neil Young has a classic sound (from Buffalo Springfield), this album is from 1975. A good mellow folky style, this album is somber and drunken.

Nothing too striking about it but good easy listening

I liked “Come on Baby , let’s go downtown” but the rest fell kind of flat to me. Neil is Neil, but this is probably on the lower end of the spectrum of his work for me ratings wise. Some of the darkness surrounding the inspiration most likely adds to that overall album feel. 2.75/5

I can appreciate the “just push play” approach with many of Neil’s recordings to capture the moment, but this one was just average. It definitely doesn’t belong in this list.

I’m a fan but not sure this is the album that needs to be on the list. A few good tracks but mostly sleepy.

🤔🥱😴

We may be approaching “too much tuna” territory with Neil Young. Let’s have Harvest and call it a day. This album is totally fine and a nice listen. Just not sure it belongs here with the Neil we’ve already gotten and will surely get. 3.25/5

A little slow paced, but not bad.

Right, I just don't get the way people worship Neil Young. I can see that he has had some amazing releases, including 'After the Gold Rush', 'Harvest', and his work with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. But so much else of his discography feels a bit flat to me, including much of what's on this generator. It's not bad exactly, and I appreciate that there's a very emotional backstory here, having known two people who died of overdoses shortly before. To quote one review, "[t]he record chronicles the post-hippie, post-Vietnam demise of counterculture idealism." I can see it and maybe that's why it doesn't resonate with me. It seems to fit into this depressive place between 60s and 70s culture using country music as a crutch to barely hold itself up. Well ok, I guess it's an interesting concept, but it's not one that resonates with me especially. "Come On Baby, Let's Go Downtown" is the highlight for me, and interestingly was written and sung by one of Young's lost friends. I also enjoyed "Mellow My Mind". After that, it's a bit too country for my liking but it's kind of interesting.

it was quite good but im not sure i GET get it

Neil Young is fine.

Not bad, but not Young's best by a bit.

It's alright but it doesn't standout much to me.

This is one of those Neil Young albums that is hard to defend for this list. He has a lot of entries based on the number of hit making groups and solo projects he's been on, but a live album is not the arena to showcase NY's talent. He still does a great job here, but as for an album I must listen to? Nah… 3/5

Some classic Neil Young, can't really tell the difference between this and the other albums. But always happy to listen to him

This album has personal history with Young that everyone knows about, how it was written and recorded around the time of two deaths close to him. So of course there are unequivocal references to drugs (heroin) and those deaths. There's something about a cocky saloon piano that thrills me. I always chuckle, though, that Young sings like a muppet.

Always loved his voice, glad this gave me a chance to listen to an album I hadn’t previously heard about

Honestly didn't think too much of it. Hate to be that guy but I feel that other people launched off of his sound and did it much better.

not my thing its okay i suppose

Very bluesy for Neil Young, and I don't mean sad, because most of his albums are sad, but this one feels like I'm in a dingey bar with poor lighting, and that can be a good and a bad thing. A good chunk of the songs just feel too stereotypical rocker for my taste, but sometimes this album gets very powerful, and you can hear ALL the inspiration for those 90s slacker rock groups, which was particularly great. Perhaps the most mixed bag Neil Young album I've heard, it was still a treat to engage with at times, just wish it embraced the somber side more, even if every other Neil Young album does that too, I'd prefer leaving it to Crazy Horse collaborations for the rock.

Neil Young's Tonight's The Night is often hailed as a raw and poignant exploration of grief, loss, and the darker sides of the human experience. Released in 1975, this album is a significant departure from the polished sound of his earlier works. While Young's voice may not be conventionally pleasant, its roughness adds an authentic layer to the storytelling that is both captivating and haunting. One of the standout features of Tonight's The Night is Young's ability to weave compelling narratives through his lyrics. Songs like "Speakin' Out" and "Tonight's The Night" resonate with listeners not just for their musical composition, but for the emotions they evoke. Young's storytelling captures the essence of vulnerability, detailing personal tragedies and transformative experiences that speak to universal themes of heartache and resilience. Despite his vocal imperfections, Young's delivery is imbued with a sense of urgency and honesty. The rawness of his voice complements the album's themes, allowing listeners to feel the weight of his words. The combination of sparse instrumentation and impassioned singing creates an atmosphere that feels intimate, as if Young is sharing his innermost thoughts directly with the listener. In conclusion, Tonight's The Night stands as a testament to Neil Young's skill as a storyteller. The unrefined quality of his vocals enhances rather than detracts from the profound messages behind the music. This album is not just a collection of songs; it’s an experience that invites listeners to reflect on the complexities of life, making it a timeless piece in Young's discography.

Not his best. But still great. 3.4

In general, I like Neil Young's sound most of the time. It's nice for a casual listen in the background.

I know some Neil young. This sound very bluesy.

I’ve heard better from Neil, but this isn’t the worst thing I’ve listened to on this list. Solid 3/5

Ordentliches Album aber ohne Highlights. Es ist der Rocksound der 70er, ein bisschen Beatkeller, etwas Country und Neils prägnante Stimme. Gelungen sind die Kombinationen aus Piano und Mundharmonika z.B. „Borrowed Tune“ oder „Mellow My Mind“.

I really just fine Neil’s voice so grating. I fee like I can’t honestly give this a 2 even if I hate his voice.

Im a Neil fan - love his stuff. This one was new to me had not heard it - - don't feel I missed anything all these years.

It has a very vivid live vibe and bar blues attitude though lacks what it takes to put it on this list as if any album of any godfather had to fill the poll.

I've heard this before. I appreciate the songwriting but I can't help thinking that this is one album that would be better with a different lead vocalist. Part of the issue might be that Neil is "too close to the material". He is understandably emotional and the lyrics clearly come from the heart. But ultimately the music and lyrics don't move me as much as they are clearly moving him.

#BringBackTheHarmonica ! I feel like it’s a lost instrument these or maybe it’s just the music i listen to. As far as the album, it was a whole lotta mid. Ok, slightly above average!

3.3 2x catchup 11/8/24

7/10 Why does it have to sound so unfinished? Definitely disappointing considered how much I like gold rush

This was nice, because it's Neil Young, and he's intrinsically nice and presumably not actually able to write bad songs, but it was by far the least inspiring of the Young (or even the various Young-infused artists) that I've had on the Proj so far. Just a bit forgettable to be honest.

I generally like the Neil Young albums that pop up on this list, though this one wasn’t my favorite. I did appreciate it and its rawness more after reading the backstory behind it as an expression of grief.

It would seem that in order to be dubbed a ‘troubadour’ of the 70s and 80s it is requisite to have a trilogy of albums, like Bowie, Dylan, Waits, Springsteen….enter the Ditch Trilogy by Maestro Young. This album felt like sitting shiva - a drawn-out conversation of sorrow, loss, and grief. There were points of beauty to it but the overarching theme was of unrelenting raw pathos - like the blues distilled into a shot glass. There were parts that I liked more than most Neil Young (and all of his stuff with Crazy Horse or CSNY). It’s just that I don’t wanna feel heartbroken most of the time.

Loved the song Borrowed Tunes. Added to In Memoriam Playlist

Fine Neil Young, not great but not bad to listen to.

Good album from Neil here. My first real experience with NY(&CH) is the love album Weld and unfortunately nothing else has compared to that. Still nice to hear the albums he’s made from where some of those songs came from. 3.5 stars.

Theres some great Neil Young albums out there but this isn't one of them, still a fine album but nothing amazing 3*

p346. 1975. 3 stars. Bit of a mixed bag, this one - a lot of filler, and possibly his worst vocal performance ever on "Mellow My Mind." With better quality control this could easily have been a 4. Still worth a listen.

Borrowed Time // Albuquerque //

#66 - pleasant enough 70s vibes but I struggled to connect with it.

This was pretty cool. "Albuquerque" and "Tired Eyes" especially stood out to me. I saw Neil Young when I was 19 but wasn't really in a place at the time to fully appreciate what he was doing. Not all of this speaks to me but it doesn't ever drag on, and it's really good songwriting. Honestly, Neil Young sounds so much like Stephen Malkmus to me, I didn't realize how similar their vocals were until this record. I listened to it twice and could tell I would really like it if I was in the right mood, so I'll revisit this later when I'm in a particularly melancholic self-pitying mood.

Some decent songs that could've been a lot better if the vocals weren't so raw

Some of Neil's stuff has been growing on me lately; I've been listening to On the Beach a lot. This one doesn't seem to be on the same level as his best work, but it's still good. Although I can often put up with his voice, on this record it's a bit more irritating than on others I've heard.

Decent one.

very chill vibes. Classic sounding Neil Young

Neil is fine but he has way too many albums on this damn list

This is the third Neil Young (or Neil Young & Crazy Horse) album, and we have yet to see "Harvest" which I think has two of his best songs on it. I'm not super familiar with this one but it's got a pretty rockin feel to it and I pretty much always love Neil with a rock band behind him. He knows how to rock and when he's got a drummer or an electric guitar with a little bit of that "edge of breakup" distortion, it usually means enjoyable music is being played. This was a good listen. A little bit too much in the middle though without many songs that stood out. I'm giving it a 3 for it's quality but I'm not sure if this should be on the list.

Good, wouldn't listen to again though

It’s good enough but I don’t really get the hype with Neil Young.

Very mid

Started off a bit slow but the middle was alright. Still not heard anything by Neil Young that even gets close to Heart of Gold record. Don't think this was worth of an inclusion unless I've missed something important

It's cool

I do like Neil Young and I think part of his style is to sing in a strained way like it is slightly out of his range, but I feel this album did this more than most and I found it grating at times. Not my favourite NY album but certainly enjoyable

Strong start, weak finish

Me and Neil have beef. He’s an artist I deeply respect as a songwriter. But my god his voice. His voice is always such a bummer. Hey! Guess what! Same story here.

Idk, I'm struggling with these Neil Young albums. Like they are good, sure, I just can't connect with the songs, like not a single one.

Nothing about this album really stands out. It's not bad enough to give it a 2 but might not really deserve a 3. Just because Neil Young writes an album shouldn't automatically put it on this list.

Enjoyed this!

This went by quite easy, but it was very samey. Stand-out: World on a String

Not bad

It's a good Neil Young album. Not a great one. Largely down the middle bluesy Neil.Young.

Really back loaded, but the back half especially Albuquerque was very good

This has a mix of styles: rootsy blues, classic R&R, singer-songwriter, and tastes of CSNY. I didn’t really connect with this album, though. Neil’s singing is so bad at times (Mellow my Mind), it distracts. He can obviously sing- he manages those CSNY harmonies, so I don’t know why he chooses to not be on pitch. I’m sure with subsequent listens I’d get more into it, but I just don’t think there will any. 2.9

Great more Neil Young, but now he’s trying to sound like Lou Reed. I actually don’t hate it.

Tonights the night Speaking out World on a string

I think some of these songs could grow on me if I listen to them more, but I wasn't super impressed on my first listen.

Another Neil Young album!!

For the second day in a row, I'm glad this music is back on spotify but this didn't hit me in a different way like yesterday's joni mitchell album did. Just very average to me and I think that's because rust never sleeps and parts of his other albums before this one stood out to me a bit more.

ordinary Neil Young 70s record

decent album with some solid tracks, didn’t have any issue with it, bit the best from neil young but wasn’t bad by any means

I genuinely like Neil Young, but I hadn’t heard this album before. I appreciate the mix of genres, a blues song, a country song and more, it’s good, but there are many other works of his that I like better.

I didn’t have anything on my calendar tonight, but yeah I guess so

Can’t give anything in the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young universe below a 3

It's fine. I really wish I loved this, but it's just kind of whiney and boring.

Great musician, great voice. Never seems to quit recording. Not one of his best albums, but hey, it’s Neil Young.

I like how personal the production is here. I like Neil Young. There are several Neil Young albums I like more than this one, but this one is good as well.

Good album

Didn't much like this one. Sad that Neil Young is back on Spotify for one of the lesser albums...

Neil can be amazing, Neil can be croaky and out of tune. This has both Neils.

We're at the 8th album (afaik) featuring ol' Neil. I'm pretty sure they've all gotten 4s and 5s from me, so it may be a safe bet that I like this too. I don't recognize any song titles, but I didn't with On the Beach (4 stars n counting) and Ragged Glory (4 stars) either. I think this might be a grower. It’s pretty bleak & pessimistic, but also features great performances (eg. the guitar in “Steppin Out”. However, I wouldn’t say musically there’s much else done better than the later Crazy Horse albums (eg. Rust Never Sleeps) Pretty sure all that’s left of this guy on this generator is Harvest (1972), his biggest hit… HL: “Steppin’ Out”, “Borrowed Tune”, “Albuquerque”

I didn't mind the album but I wasn't a huge fan either.

Yet another Neil Young album that is ok but not a lot more Nothing particularly stand out here but nothing dreadful either

It’s Neil Young. He’s ok. There’s worse. There’s better. He’s put out better. 3

I always enjoy Neil Young, but have yet to get to a point where I feel like putting him on in my spare time. Let's go downtown is a great song, but otherwise it's more of a stream of good songs from him.

Listened on the train back after a day doing not much at the beach

70s rock love the shit out of this probably. Not really interesting for me. I don't like his voice that much. And I reeally dont like the fact that the vocals are so bad on this one. The bro always moves closer and farther from the mic.

Pleasant to listen to! I might return to some of the songs on this album.

This album has the downside of Neil Young (the voice, of course) without any of the upside (good songs).

Getting drunk and high and playing music might be a way to grieve the deaths of friends; recording the music and selling it does not make it great. The grief is palpable on these tracks.

I’m not a Neil Young fan, but I do believe he has better albums. I love the guitars in Come On Baby. I do not love the chorus in Mellow My Mind where he can’t get close to that high note

Why is everyone so high on this guy. He doesn’t have a great voice. He’s not rocking out. Yet, he’s everyone’s musical hero. Not mine, though.

Typical Neil Young, good

My introduction to Neil Young. The album is okay at best. I listened to this album thinking it'll be life-changing. Unfortunately, my expectations were too high. 7/10

I’ll admit he’s a good lyricist, and his songs were very passionate. I think his almost child like way of singing adds to the charm. 3.0

Listened to this a couple days after Neil Young was added back to Spotify (Joni Mitchell doesn’t seem to be holding out either anymore, not sure when that happened). I tend to like Neil Young but this album never really resonated with me. There’s some good songs but nothing that stands out too much. Young is at his best live, and Live Rust contains a great version of “Tonight’s the Night”.

Heartbreaking Neil Young, mourning the loss of a friend. If this isn't his best work on this list - and maybe, just maybe, there's a touch too much Neil Young on the list overall - it is certainly worth a listen and proves his credentials as a prolific and inspiring singer songwriter.

Better than I anticipated

Bluesy Neil. Good stuff. I enjoy it, but in moderation.

Hyvä levy, mutta muistin tykänneeni tästä joskus enemmän. 3+/5

Ei parasta Neil Youngia, mutta kelpo levy silti. 3/5

ganz okay? idk

I’m not a huge fan of Neil Young. I like some stuff, I dislike some stuff. He’s very middle of the road for me. I can hear why people like him, though. This album doesn’t surprise me. Right down the middle.

Good, but I couldn’t wait to finish so I could listen to Tom Waits “Heart of Saturday Night”.

I get the feeling that I should like this more than I do. I was very generous with "On The Beach" (83/100) so either that one is better or I was in a better mood when I listened to it... Don't know.

Enjoyed getting Pt II at the end of the album - this just isn't an experience I typically get with my current listening habits.

Just got another Neil Young earlier this week. I don't like this one as much. His voice is...not great. 3/5

Love me some good neil.

fín, bara mello Neil Young

I believe that he is a talented song writer, but I cannot stand his voice on most of these songs. It just grates on my ear drums.

Ehh it's fine... not super amazing but fine.

6/10 Is this really an album I need to have listened before I die? Close to 200 albums deep and I'm missing some of the fringes of what musicians are doing at the moment. This is good but I won't die content getting hit by a double decker bus knowing I listened to the 5th Neil Young album on this list

Neil cant sing. Good songs though

Every album of Young’s, I can appreciate the music composition, but the singing is so distracting from it. Young is a phenomenal musician but a terrible singer. 3/5.

Middle of the road Neil. Not his best, not his worst.

Didn't enjoy as much as I hoped. Loved Albuquerque. Sounded like demos to me.

Yeah I just didn’t really care for this. I mean there were a couple songs ones here but mehhhhh. I didn’t care for this guys voice. The instrumentals felt subdued and basic. Maybe the lyrics had more going on

Not bad, not good

pas son meilleur. still listenable. rock / psy. 6.5/10

Oke we zijn weer ietwat back on track. Niets bijzonders dit, er is veel betere Neil Young. Gewoon prima, standaard blues

very old school

Never heard Neil Young before, this was a decent album. I don’t know if I would listen to it again but it was listenable and enjoyable.

typical old Neil Young stuff. Not bad, but kinda boring

Had to go to YouTube for this, fuvk you 1001 albums bruh, pretty good album idk

Good mix of rock but mostly folky country with that Neil Young twang.

B- Tonight's The Night 3 Speakin' Out 3 World On A String 3 Borrowed Tune 3 Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown 3 Mellow My Mind 3 Roll Another Number (For The Road) 3 Albuquerque 3 New Mama 3 Lookout Joe 4 Tired Eyes 3 Tonight's The Night - Part II 3 5/9 Neil Young's done, more than halfway there!!

As someone that likes Neil Young, I just find this album okay to good, not great. There aren't really any standout songs to me, and I question it being on t his list. However, I do generally like the album and would listen to it again. I also find the subject matter and the message Young was trying to convey compelling and interesting, especially for that time in music/musician culture.

Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown". Rating: 3,5/5

I was pretty disappointed in this one given how much I unexpectedly enjoyed "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere." This album was...fine. I guess. 2.5.

A lot of what the critics that built this list is just not what I like in my music. This album is so gentle and intentional. Good music, just not for me.

Rating: 6/10 Decent album overall. Really enjoyed it instrumentally, the songwriting was very good as well. Neil Young's vocals sound awful on this album, he is really struggling to hit a lot of the notes. Favorite songs: Tonight's the Night, Speakin' Out, Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown, Albuquerque. Worst song: World on a String.

Ragged n rusty. Not my favorite Neil Young style/era.

Not available on Spotify. Thanks Joe Rogan.

Spotifiy didn't allow me to listen to this album. As i was already very tired from a wine tasting, listening the album via youtube was too annoying for me. However, i was able to listen to dire straits which i did when falling asleep. -

There are better albums but true blues/bluegrass/country

There are some real gems on here. Neil Young does rock/blues very well, and it's a nice break from his whiny folk stuff. I liked this album just enough.

put this off for a day thinking I wouldn't be interested, I was kind of right? generally a fan of the sound and vibes, Young's vocals are a little grating at times and I really despise that harmonica. Pretty cool guitar solos, though. would rate it 3.5/5 if possible. favourite track : 'Lookout Joe'

top tier dad music borrowed tune, mellow my mind

Still fine, not as good as the other one

Sounds good and sad

3.5, actually not that bad, much better than yesterday’s album

Pretty average but I appreciate how raw it is

Not his best work

Just not a fan of Neil Young. I like some songs but listening to this was kind of meh.

i just ... ugh

It was ok

It was pretty decent I guess. I liked Tired Eyes

I generally like Neil Young but this album was different. I got boring fast. Second half of the album was relatively more listenable

Raw - Mundharmonica und Banjo gehen hard

Not a huge fan of Neil Young personally, but still an enjoyable listen.

I enjoyed the album but won't be listening again. My only highlights are Borrowed Tune, New Mama and Tired Eyes. Tired Eyes goes HARD and is fantastic. Generally, I think the feeling of the album is one of trying to reach something but not quite getting that. Good for background music, maybe.

not quite the jam I can get down too. Not too bad tho

Eh, this isn't really for me but it wasn't bad.

This is not my favorite Neil Young album, but it's still really good. I recently listened to some producers talk about this whole period for Neil, starting with After the Gold Rush. The albums are super loose. I think this album was recorded in two days? To my ear it literally sounds like the unedited, raw recordings of a band playing live in a room. Bone dry. I think, at least for Gold Rush, there was a bunch of editing involved, but this one sounds sloppy and very, very loose. Just dudes playing music in a basement. Neil Young is the king of that. Makes all us (relatively) perfectionist musicians shake in our boots a bit... and compared to Neil, we're all perfectionists. This is raw like meat, and still packs a ton of emotion. He manages to do that. If I'm honest... they should probably have done 4 days, rather than 2. Some of the tracks are just a bit too rough, and another take would have been good. Who knows, though? Would it have been any better? 3/5

It’s ok

Easy listen, but nothing special. The experience might have been ruined by adds from YouTube as Neil is no longer on Spotify due to the Covid vax conflict with Joe Rogen.

I didn't like this as much as On The Beach. Albuquerque was nice, though.

Neil has one of those voices that can be either sublime or bloody awful. This album highlights both aspects. There are parts that just make me think how on earth did that ever get recorded, and what ever possessed him to make him think he could have a career in music. Yet there are other bits that make you think yeah, this is the real Neil. Not quite at his best but getting there. It's no Harvest, but good enough. High 3 for me.

Decent enough album, but it just kind of trundles along without any real highs or any horrible lows. Nice country/blues vibe, and love the guitar work. However, there are times when his ‘unique’ vocal style gets a little strained, in fact some might say that he hits a few bum notes. Not my favourite Uncle Neil album.

Doppelt?

Not really a Neil Young fan, but this wasn't terrible.

Took me a minute to warm up, but Borrowed Tune got my attention.

Too many tracks missing on Spotify.

Se me ha hecho un poco bola, pero está guay

Rating - STRONG 6 Best Song - Albuquerque (10/10) Worst Song - Borrowed Tune (5/10) Thoughts: Incredible production throughout the entire album with some excellent guitar solos laced in parts of this album along some thoughtful writing from Neil Young on songs such as 'Speakin' Out' and 'Lookout Joe'. The production on 'Albuquerque' was easily the highlight of the album and even though I have a distaste for most harmonica music, this album, for the most part, executed those sounds beautifully. This is a GOOD album filled with luscious production from David Briggs and Tim Mulligan and it will be a very welcome introduction into rock music for anyone looking to get into the genre.

Pretty good album. Especially impactful if you read the background for the song lyric context. I don't think it's my favorite of the Neil Young albums we've heard, but it definitely merits more listens and seems like a grower.

Don't know if I'm a huge fan of Neil Young's voice. Great tunes and poetry though.

liked it but once again i'm not blown away cause all 1970's rock albums can kinda be samey, almost gave it a 4 but i don't think i like it enough

The piano is nice at times. It's sad overall and makes me think of a depressed truck driver travelling back and forth across the country. It's not terrible to listen to and if it was playing in the background, I probably wouldn't mind. Some songs are just so slow and depressing though. The instruments sound okay. The guitar and piano are nice. The voice isn't annoying or moan-y which is good. It's okay I guess. If I had a friend who enjoyed this type of music, I wouldn't think differently of them.

I like it, but I don't think it's his best.

Deliberately a bit more rugged and imperfect than the classic Neil Young sound. There are no hit singles on the record, which is also probably a deliberate decision by Young, given his propensity to be a little contrary and react against previous success. Not sure about the ropey vocals given the usual quality of Young's voice, but still a strong album throughout. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Tonight's The Night Date listened: 08/08/23

Interesting album. It's Neil Young doing a tired laid back country album. I like the vibe, even if the songs are more suggestions of melody than actual compositions.

Meh. Its not bad, but its not good. My parents hated Neil Young, and I suspect this album was the reason why. And why in the world should everyone hear this? 3/5

More bluesy than the folk / rock of Goldrush and Harvest. I liked Lookout Joe.

Best Song: Tonight's the Night (Pt. II). This song rocks the hardest on the album, and I want to see Neil rock. Worst Song: Mellow My Mind. Neil's voice really struggles during these mellow, softer songs, and there are some really difficult sections here. Overall: Listening to this was a nice mix of nostalgia - having heard so much of Neil Young's music on the radio in my youth - and frustration at his inability to at times understand the limits of his own vocal ability. Still, can't help but respect a man of such conviction. Mewl on, Neil. Mewl on.

I've learned that I have a slight distate for music that's about drugs that doesn't make you feel like you're on the drugs in question. Especially not when it's a bad trip. This album is creaky floorboards and alcohol-soaked wooden walls. It's mildewed and scratchy and... just really not my thing. I'd never heard Neil's voice before, and... I'd prefer to not hear it again if every album of his is going to sound like this. Too sparse for it's own good. Albuquerque is great, though. Sounds like drunk driving. 3/5.

Neither a bad album, nor an album to remember

Not bad, but not his best. Still annoying it is not on spotify.

Enjoyed! Really liked it. 3/5

surely not my fav from him but good

Day 103 I don't know much about Neil Young; I have had Harvest for decades but never bothered with the rest of his output and sometimes I think I should, so I was excited to see this coming up. I love Neil Young, he seems to be a really nice chap and I know he had a really long career and that he put out some mighty records. This one might be one of those. But unfortunately it didn't do much for me; I kinda like the live sound and can see how it influenced the 90s alternative scene, but this kind of music, that in my head comes across as classic rock, is not really for me now. A great album for sure though, I can't deny that, but for the time being I will stick with Harvest. Hope his other entries on the book will move me as much as that album did.

Reading the background behind the album and hearing his crude-ish vocals here made it feel more personal and made me like it more. 3.5

It's alright. Once again, really not my music - but it's inoffensive enough that it's fine as background music.

Well, it took a few tracks to get into this record for me. I really don’t like the title track, which meant of course I’d don’t like Pt. 2. Once we got rolling, it’s pretty damn fine with a very Live sound and genuine performance.

no es el mejor de sus discos, tampoco es el peor. lo más interesante de este disco es su historia.

I’m a big fan of Neil Young but, this is not my favorite album or collection of songs from him.

I have listened to a couple of Neil Young albums in the past (and I'm guessing there will be more in this challenge,) and I didn't care for them. I liked this one OK, at least when he wasn't using the worst singing voice I've ever heard. Seriously, what is up with his singing on Mellow My Mind? That was god-awful. I guess for some people, that's part of his charm, but Neil's singing sounds best when covered up...I mean harmonizing with someone else. Anyway, the music is pretty good, with a couple of clunkers in there. I think my favorite track was Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown.

Very single-themed album. It has its style.

Was not on Spotify. Had to listen on YouTube which ruined the experience of the album slightly. Would have maybe scored higher if this wasn’t the case.

kinda somniferous

it made me relaxed and wasn't entertaining. Albuquerque.

Mostly pretty boring but a few good songs. FS: Borrowed Tune, Mellow, Mama

Another Neil Young album…

I think this album would be excellent if Neil Young's voice wasn't so dogshit. 6/10

I did not care for this album at all. Maybe I just don't get it yet.

Some nice tunes here but no bangers unfortunately. I like Neil usually.

Tonight's the Night is the sixth album by Canadian/American songwriter Neil Young. The theme on this album is grief because both the band Crazy Horse's guitarist Danny Whitten and Neil Young's friend Bruce Berry had died of drug overdoses in the months before the songs had been written. There are nods to both of these men in some of this album's tracks. It is an album born out of the post-hippie/post-counterculture movements and has dark feelings of life flowing down the drain into depravity. However, the album has been lauded by critics as one of Young's best work. It's a calculated mess of sloppy desolation which allowed Young's grief to mold the songs on this album. I enjoyed this moody piece of music because the songwriting was amazing as it was sad. The music was comforting as if it were bittersweet waves of having to come to terms with loss. This might not be my favorite Neil Young album, but it is the most interesting and it's songs will stick with me for awhile. This is one album to listen to for anyone grieving.

Here we GO!

I really like Neil Young, but this was boresville.

Zzzzzz

Not a great balance of slow and fast tunes. Plus, the rock and country styles don't mesh well.

I’ve hit my Neil young quota for the month.

I'm aware of Youngs voice as he's a favourite of my other half. However he's not got this album so it was new material for me. I liked it.

I feel like I should like it more, but it's Neil Young... but beyond that I like his other works better. Whoops.

It was an ok folk rock album by Neil Young. I can see why at the time of release it would have garnered a great following, particularly amongst the middle America scene, even though he's actually Canadian! This quote from The New Rolling Stone Record Guide from 1983 sums this record up perfectly: "The record chronicles the post-hippie, post-Vietnam demise of counterculture idealism, and a generation's long, slow trickle down the drain through drugs, violence, and twisted sexuality. " Best: Come on Baby Let's Go Downtown Worst: Roll Another Number (For the Road) Note: Needed to listen on YouTube Music as it was not available on Spotify.

My least favourite Neil Young's album so far. Although I get the sad tones and the overall vibe of the album, there are simply no particular songs that caught my attention.

Non lo so non sono riuscito ad ascoltare

Meandering between lilting and melodic ballads and heavier electric sounds. Neil Young is a great songwriter but I didn't find this album as interesting as some of his other stuff

Classic Neil young, ballads, rock and roll, blues some awesome lyrics and some bluesy tunes. (75%)

блюзовщина дрожащим голосом, не для меня

Pretty good

Less rock, more country twang, than some of his other efforts but this album maintains Young's raw, and immediately recognizable, lyrical and vocal stylings. Good, but not his best.

None of these songs feel like they belong on the same album, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. However, in this case, it’s in the sense of the production quality being so drastically different from track to track that it makes it jarring to listen to, and takes away from the general flow of the album. His singing leaves a lot to be desired as well. Instrumentation was fine and lyrics were good. The songs themselves alone were great, but it felt too much like a compilation album. Not that they were all his best tracks, more like they belong to different recording sessions on different albums. I don’t know why it’s so disconcerting to me. The album is fine other than that. 3/5

Neil evolving and good to hear an album from the period between the early CSNY years and the later sound.

vissa låtar var lite gillade jag rätt mycket, gött sound och så men dom andra var ganska lame

Whoever put this list together is super fond of 70s boomer rock

I prefer this to ‘Harvest’, but it’s still got a lot of average material on it, and Young’s singing is worse than usual. ‘Come On Baby Let’s Go Downtown’ and ‘Lookout Joe’ are my personal highlights, the latter being the best song on the record. ‘Albuquerque’ is ok too.

"Neil Old" Mike (just ripped bong): 😂🤣😂🤣

It’s ok, I guess.

Dark, sad country... or is it rock?

As much as I respect and admire Neil, this one was hard to listen to. Some good songwriting, but the vocals were so irritating at points and the general vibe was a but uninspiring. A legend, but not a must hear album.

This was pretty good but not at the top of my Neil favorites.

Enjoy this era of Neil's career. Although this album isn't Harvest, it still has some of the same feels. Good shit

Another album not on Spotify... The good part of this is I found a live version which is always the best version.

I’ve never been too big of a Neil Young fan. This is very raw and kind of catchy at times but just not my thing.

It's an okay album, simple as that. Nice self-titled opening song, some nice blues guitars and riffs, enjoyable melodies and I think okay voc by Neil at best. There were few moments on the album, where I had to die inside a little when his voice broke down on a higher notes. To sum up, I didn't find anything special on this album, but it wasn't really a chore to listen to it. Just not my style.

Heard other Neil Young albums but not this one before. Thought it was good but he definitely has better.

Young consistently brings incredible lyrics; his journey of pain and suffering is chronicled very well here. But it feels a bit like he ran out of steam at the end of this ditch trilogy. Because while the lyrics are good (if not great), the musical accompaniment doesn't totally synch with it, leaving his brutal voice front and center too often. For example, Speakin' Out or Borrowed Tune is like nails on a chalkboard. What I loved about some of his other albums (including the predecessor On the Beach) is that you could hear and feel his emotions. I'm just not feeling it in the same way; again, something in how it's all put together doesn't grab me like other albums. So the sad, soft songs are a bit of a chore and I find I'm most interested in his more up-tempo tracks (like Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown, aided by Danny Whitten's vocals), of which there are few. Overall this album doesn't really do it for me.

I got this album back in 2011 and maybe played it once, which normally doesn’t bode well. Listening to it again I feel that it isn’t the best Neil Young album that I’ve heard but it’s not as bad as I feared it was going to be. His voice on here seems strained and forced. I read that a good deal of it was recorded on just one day in August so maybe that had something to do with it. The album also felt like a leftovers album of a bunch of songs that didn’t make it onto others. There were some tracks that I enjoyed a lot. The title track (both parts), “Speakin’ Out” ,especially the solo in it, and “Borrowed Tune” stood out but the rest of it was somewhat forgettable for me. I see that this is a highly rated album among Neil Young fans so maybe it’s one of those that would grow on me through multiple listens. We’ll see how it does if there’s ever a revisit review but for now it’s just a 3 star Neil album.

Te doen.

Neil pulled all his music from Spotify. Thanks a lot Joe Rogan, this is all your fault. Edit: listened to on YouTube Music. Enjoyed this one!

Joe Rogan ruined my Neil Young experience. No Soup For You!

Neil Young is a great songwriter and a terrific musician. He is a notable influence on many artists, and a man of principles and integrity. And he's a terrible singer. Occasionally I think Young uses his voice well, masking its limitations and accentuating its uniqueness. But "Tonight's the Night" had too much bad Neil Young singing. I made it through, enjoying some parts and cringing at others, and then had the realization that Built to Spill's Doug Martsch's voice kind of reminds me of a better Neil Young in a weird way. So I listened to some Built to Spill. Thanks, Neil.

Messy but memorable.

Liked it more than selling England by the pound.Still not my kind of thing.Very nice sounding but it was a bit too slow and for me.I liked the title track and there was none that I hated but it wasn’t that memorable.

J'aime ce côté plus rock, moins folk que ce que je connaissais de prime abord de Neil Young.

It's fine; calm and relaxing. Fits into many background-settings

I like the 'raw-ness' of his vocals. It's very real and uncensored which makes me feel closer to the music and the experience of listening to it — almost as if I'm listening to it live where it doesn't have to be perfect, just real. Also have to shoutout the lyrics of Borrowed Tune — made me smile. My favourite songs: Speakin' Out and Mellow My Mind

It’s taken over 200 albums for me to draw one by the Godfather of Grunge himself, titan of southern rock and roll and champion of the free world. Neil Young’s legend looms long and low in popular music, but I’ve never heard “Tonight’s the Night” before. After three full listens, my verdict is that it’s a raw, vulnerable experience: it gets better the more Young strips away the edges of his soul. Death permeates much of the record, following Young losing two close friends to drug abuse (one detailed with painstaking frankness in the two renditions of the title track, the other giving a searing posthumous performance on “Come on Baby Let’s Go Downtown”, a live performance from five years prior and a fitting way to pay tribute). The raw, bleeding heart of the record makes up the songs from “Borrowed Tune” (containing an ingenious admission of plagiarism) to “Roll Another Number (For the Road)”, which is both melancholic and positive, resigned and somehow hopeful. “Albuquerque” is another highlight, one of the closest things to weariness personified I’ve heard in a long time. The band sound dry, live, spontaneous- it’s a rough around the edges approach which really serves the songs. Young’s vocals are gritty, delicate and frail as I’ve ever heard them, and it works perfectly with this material. The more he strains or waver over yearning tracks like “Mellow My Mind” or “Tired Eyes”, the more compelling it becomes. Unfortunately though, a lot of the record falls under less noteworthy, more straight-down-the-middle meat and potatoes rock. “World on a String” chugs along with no consequence, and “Lookout Joe” is a solid rocker but feels a little out of place (perhaps due to its origin in a whole different recording period). Then there’s “Speakin’ Out”, a little too loungey and languid to appeal too much. There might be future Neil Young albums coming up which I’ll prefer, and not all of this was up my street, but the middle third is really powerful stuff. One to revisit for all the bleak days and stark nights.

Did not listen.

Great songwriting and lyricism here, along with good music backing.

尼尔杨虽然老年痴呆,但年轻时候的歌还是可以的。

Not on spotify

tonight is the night

An interesting experience. I wouldn't say I love Neil Young's voice or that I liked every song, however I cannot ignore the artistry of this album. "Borrowed Tune" is lovely.
