Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Solid early 70s
It passed me by and i hardly noticed. Where is on the beach? Where is that album about wheat? Where is god? It is another fine album, fine and boring. Neil cant sing y'all, no offense. I like that he's made a career out of not being able to sing. Blues rock classic rock dad does it again. Maybe this was fundamental and foundational at the time, kinda stale now. Damn, do i not like Neil Young? Fuck.
That Canuck seems fairly bummed.
Staat niet op spotify..
Didn't grab me like some of his others.
Not Neil's best work
An enjoyable album but there's too much of Neil Young on this list
Tonight's the Night was new music for me, even though I have heard many tracks from Neil Young. I own Young's albums Harvest and Harvest Moon, both of which are at least 4 stars or more. This album was okay, but nothing stood out to me in particular. I'm not sure what the history is behind this album which may have earned the album a spot on this list. My favorite track was probably the title track, but I didn't save any of the tracks to my personal play list. I'm not sure that I would remember to come back to give this album a second listen.
I don't dislike this album as much as the last Neil Young album the generator gave me, which I think was live. I don't think that means Neil Young is growing on me. 2.5 stars rounding up because of, you know, the tragedy of it.
Good
It's fine. I like Neil Young but I don't think of this one is really essential for all to hear. If you like Neil Young, you will probably have a good time. If you're not a fan, this will almost certainly not change your mind.
Well, I can’t listen to this one today because Neil decided to go all Old Man Yells at Cloud at Spotify and that’s my only streaming option right now. I know it’s good though, heard it before so I’ll review on the fumes of my last listen. Neil is at his full raspy and raw power here. It’s not as good as Harvest, let’s be clear about that. But he is a Canadian icon, a rocking dude that we all love up here in the Great White North. I still appreciate you Neil, even though the crusade on Spotify is only hurting yourself.
I cannot stand his vocal performance. Maybe some of the songs could have been good, but his voice ruins it
Triste y sufrido album que hace de su defecto una virtud
Found on Apple Music! Not a massive Neil Young fan but appreciate his political stance with his music.
I hadn't listened to this album before. I liked the rawness of this album, and it grew on me more after a few repeats. Borrowed Tune is pretty bold - never heard an artist do this openly before!
I only listen to a few songs on YouTube. Not bad. Sounded like Neil Young. Probably would have been better if I listened to the whole album.
Listened to this as intended - with like 20 liberty mutual commercials sprinkled in. Harmonica! Pretty rough vocals
Toffe listen
Listened Before? N Pretty Boring. I get that he was at a dark place in his life during this period, but I just can't get into it. I just don't think NY is my style. His lyrics start to sound very samey to me after a while, and his voice is not very dynamic. I'm going to guess by the overall listening stats of the songs on this album that it's one of his hardcore fans' favorite records. Not for me, unfortunately. Added to Library? N Songs added to Playlist: Tonight's the Night (Part II)
shakey tbf - 3
I bet I would have enjoyed this a lot more had I listened on Spotify. Or heroin.
I like his voice but I kept waiting for a great track and it didn’t really come so just a 3*
I think it was fine. A bit like the Springsteen albums you know exactly what you are going to get. Not really sure how you would distinguish between them enough for some to get into the list and others not.
Nowadays this sound is for me more of those '70 years. Anyway, I liked the sound and the history behind the album https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Young#The_%22Ditch%22_Trilogy_and_personal_struggles_(1972%E2%80%931974)
A good Neil Young album, but definitely not his best. Hard to place it side by side to his bigger and badder albums, but it's a good and listenable album nonetheless.
Neil Young sure is something, huh? Not my favorite album but not bad.
I’ve herd of the name mainly due to his problems with spotify and while I kinda agreed with him there it was annoying flicking with YouTube. Ungrateful rant out of the way lets go… Tonight’s the night was a great opener set’s the kinda sound the album’s gonna be in, it does drag a lil bit though and I’am kinda questioning his vocals. Speakin out feels all much the same to me except the vocals are slightly better and I prefer the piano on this one. World on a string starts off seeming like it would be a really heavy cut with that crunchy guitar ( and while it still stays heavy) it does go slightly softer once we get through. Good song! Borrowed tune seemed off putting at the start with the harmonica ( an instrumental i’am not a fan of) but the harmonica goes and… what a contrast to the last song! It still sounds really good though being the slowest so far. Come on baby lets go downtown ( live) is really nice, I love it when artists slot in a live recording on a studio album, it’s strongest in the guitar department by far though. Mellow my mind has a much grander feel, it’s my favourite off side one and (maybe) the album great way to close that half!!! Roll another number ( for the road) is a good song, but being a slower track the placement feels strange to me for starting side A. But on the plus side everything about the instrumentation is great and the verses are good lyrically. Albuquerque is also good,I probably would’ve swapped this and roll another number and the harmonica solo wasn’t the best but still nice. New mama feels the most “filler” but it’s still an alright slower track I don’t know why but the closest thing I can compare it to is like one of the folkier songs on Fleetwood mac’s rumours with the picking. Lookout joe goes back to heavier end of young’s sound and it’s a sound I really like the song also has a memorable chorus which is nice. The penultimate cut tired eyes starts off giving a nice spoken bit… or that’s what I thought, yeah this one’s verses sound a bit off to me but most spoken verses do. The chorus is nice but my god! The harmonica worsened it slightly. The album ends with a “ part 2” of the title track basically it’s just a slower sounding version of that song. Personally I would’ve swapped this and tired eyes Yeah this album screams reorder to me, all the songs are really good they just don’t fit amazingly in sequence.
04/21/2022 Fuck Joe Rogan. Listened on YouTube, due to the Spotify debacle.
I was not always a big fan of Neil Young, so I haven't listened to his music very much. I appreciated the opportunity today to listen to an album of his that I was not familiar with. However, I am still not a big fan of Neil Young. What allowed me to listen to the whole thing with a smile on my face (did there really need to be an exact duplicate part II of "Tonight's the Night"?) was the realization that Young's voice is somewhat similar to Jerry Nelson's, the Muppeteer who performed Floyd Pepper of the Electric Mayhem, Emmet Otter of his jug band, and Kermit's nephew Robin. I just pictured any of them singing Neil's part and I loved it. This isn't to say I didn't like this album. I liked that it had an almost live sound to it—like the microphone wasn't totally set up right and there weren't a lot of takes, and that made it feel a bit more personal. I also understand that this album was an expression of grief, and I feel that. So this felt a bit more like music appreciation homework than something I would choose to listen to, but I was glad I listened to it.
When it comes to Neil Young, I am not a big fan…not even a little fan. I guess I rank him at tolerable and sometimes good. So, I didn’t expect much from this album. It was ok…better than just tolerable. I even had occasional thoughts that in the right setting with the right people, I could totally get this. Then something (external to the album) happened to make me a little grumpy today and this was not the album to snap me out of that.
Based Neil Young.
It’s totally fine. I probably wouldn’t reposted to it. This album peaks early and sputters to its finish. Though it isn’t terrible throughout.
3.6 - I liked it but I clearly don't have as much of a raging boner for Neil Young as Robert Dimery does. Of the five Neil Young albums I've already reviewed so far, this one falls somewhere in the middle. It's got a compelling backstory and some great rough guitar work. But the vocals are pretty shaky. I appreciate the "fresh take" sound, more so on a cerebral level, but it's not necessarily something I'd listen to closely, maybe more as mellow background rock music.
Neil Young, drunk, recording an album in one night, to recover from the loss of 2 of his mates. "I'm singin' this borrowed tune I took from the Rolling Stones, Alone in this empty room Too wasted to write my own." There's a lot of raw emotion here and at times a terrible voice. I get why this a classic and why Neil Young is revered. It's just... not for me.
Tonight’s the Night by Neil Young (1975) Here’s a record that will likely appeal mostly to diehard Neil Young fans. We get rough, one-take recordings of songs on the dark side. Neil was going through a rough patch, but he still needed to sing about it. For those who don’t like Young’s sloppy approach to pitch will find plenty of illustrative examples on this album. (“Mellow on My Mind” is painful to listen to. It’s supposed to be. “New Mama” is much better.) On the other hand, for those who like Young’s raw virtuosity on electric will find many highlights here, such as his fine blues solo work on “Speakin’ Out”. There are nice backing performances by Nils Lofgren (piano, vocals, guitar), and Ben Keith (pedal steel), but drummer Ralph Molina’s ubiquitous backing vocals are, shall we say, an acquired taste—acquired by Neil Young, but not by his more discriminating listeners. Young sounds much better when backed vocally by James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, and CSN, but who wouldn’t? On “Come On, Baby, Let’s Go Downtown”, we get something quite different. Accompanied by Crazy Horse, Neil Young provides backing vocals over rhythm guitarist/writer Danny Whitten’s lead, recorded live at the Fillmore East. The track was likely chosen to be included on this ‘downer’ concept album due to Whitten’s overdose death on the evening of November 18, 1972, after Young fired him from The Stray Gators earlier that day, giving him $50 and a plane ticket home to L.A. Young felt responsible. (McDonough, Shakey: Neil Young’s Biography, pp. 387-391). This album’s lead track “Tonight’s the Night” and his classic “The Needle and the Damage Done” reference this tragedy and what led up to it. I wouldn’t want to listen to this album while feeling blue. Maybe I’d listen when someone else is blue and I couldn’t do anything about it. 3/5
It's fine.
Bom
Bluesy rock, ok. Not on Spotify as artist thinks they’re bad hit Apple Music etc ok, send to think hi red music makes a difference to most people. Liked tonight’s the night. Very ‘raw’ playing obviously no auto tune on vocals and harmonica, quite difficult to listen to at points especially on borrowed tune. Listened to whilst going to sleep, so that may not have helped!
3/5. Borrowed Tune is a 5/5. The rest of the album is pretty good.
Neil has just never really been my thing, but I gave 3 stars for respect. More of a taste thing for me.
Really liked "Tired Eyes" Been loving these Young albums, they really have som golden songs inbetween the rubbish. But most of it is really good actually. 3
Good, but not great. Very sentimental though which was beautiful.
First time hearing this one from an artist I have loved for years. Really love the song "Borrowed Tune" (it's a 5/5). 3/5
Not on Spotify
there are definitely songs I like here but its hard to listen to when its not on Spotify
Couldn’t listen to this as it not on Spotify anymore
Not on Spotify so couldnt hear it!
Haven’t ever enjoyed his voice. Borrowed Tune was a standout. Listened to this the last day of this being on Spotify (1/26/22) what up.
I mean it's Neil Young, I was never a big fan, but this is basically okay? Like, it's fine. This is fine.
Although it has some very strong songs I don't know if this tops my personal Neil Young album chart to the extent it belongs on this list.
Countryrock, blues, god sangskrivning, følsomt,
I just finished watching the series The Vietnam War in HD on Prime and that war ends in 1975 so this album which was also recorded in 75 fits right in with my mood. Lots of folks complain about Young’s voice but I think ol’ Shakey’s voice is part of his charm and distinguishes him from the rest. I’m Canadian so we naturally think he’s a national treasure and although I’m a big fan, I didn’t think there wasn’t any brilliant standout tracks on this record. I know it was written right after the death of two friends so it reflects a lot of grief and sadness, but I think he has many better records.
Best wel pittig lekker
Just okay
Slow but fine
Good one. Enjoyable
Some ok songs, but overall not my bag. Neil Young is great, but this isn't his finest work.
Not my favourite Neil Young songs. Don't have to listen to again, except for maybe one or two songs.
7/10
Laid back and toasted folk country blues rock with enough poke to keep you awake and listening.
it was alright
Background music
Definitely more interesting than Van Morrison, but still not really it for me. Some real good stuff that's drowned out by things that are just kind of boring.
La musique est bonne comme je me serais attendu sur un album de Neil Young, mais très souvents les vocals laissent largement à désirer. Aucune pièce n'a vraiment plus attiré mon attention.
Better than o thought but didn’t bring me back to it
Pretty good, but not really something I would be in a hurry to listen to. I like Neil Youngs music for the most part but would have a hard time listening to it all the time. 3/5
Top Picks: Mellow My Mind and New Mama I quite liked this one. Having listened to a lot of Neil's acoustic stuff, it was cool hearing something a bit more evolved. Having said that, the overall vibe was a bit samey. Aside from New Mama (which was a real breath of fresh air) I found most of these tunes melted together.
Geen spotify...
It’s Neil young without the blazing guitar solos
Taattua Neilikkaa
Normally not a fan of Neil Young's voice, but this was much less whiney and nasally than I was expecting. It was not bad.
Second album confirms I don't care much for Neil Young. There were a few tracks I enjoyed.
Whoa, a big moment for the list. Our first Neil Young album, at least as a solo artist. I'm pretty sure there are a bunch of his on here, so I was hoping for a strong first impression. There are a few enjoyable tracks on here, and I really dug the guitar on Speakin Out, but overall I didn't get swept up in it. I'm not sure if I will with any Neil Young albums. He's a bit like Dylan, but his voice is more whiny to me, and I couldn't get myself to pay too much attention to lyrics. It's decent, but I'll reserve a more serious positive score for something better from Neil. I remain hopeful that he'll have stronger outings on here. Favorite tracks: Speakin Out, Tired Eyes, New Mama. Album art: One guy equivalent of a band photo, and it's black and white. I kind of like the strong contrast here, but it doesn't do much for me. The handwritten text is cool though. 3/5
Rock folk
I wasn't familiar with this. From this time period I appreciate After the Gold Rush and Harvest more than this.
Like Jack says, this album is all about the context....they recorded it in one day which gets a star for efficiency if nothing else. I don't really like the harmonica as an instrument that much so it gets knocked down a bit for that
Enjoyed the music and particularly the guitar. As always, Neil Young's vocals are not the bright spot.
Just very Neil Young. Neutral like a plain cracker.
Honestly, I’m surprised this album wasn’t more on my radar. Feels like it should be firmly in the classic rock rotation.
Enjoyed the sound, but There is stuff I like better by Neil young,
Pretty solid. Not my favorite Neil Young but a good album nonetheless.
Uncomfortably dark. The band did extremely well to hook into the mood.
3.5
Didn't love it. Didn't hate it.
Splitterfaserige 2.6
5-Sterne-Song: „Borrowed Tune“.
This was a strange listening experience. Clearly cathartic for Neil to write and perform these songs, but they weren't very interesting for me. Especially given the fact that his voice is objectively terrible. Not sure why he attempts to hit some of the notes he goes for. Despite this, I find myself thinking about some of the songs long after I've heard them. Can't really articulate why. Summary: objectively bad, subjectively good.
Good old Neil! As a Canadian, I'm bias, but the dude gets it across! I know people quibble with his voice, but it's really just a few notes that sound a bit whiny.
Song with ‘mama’ in it was good. Thought about dad.
Could be better
i have to listen to it again but i think harvest is better
Liked it a lot more than I thought I would. 1st half of the album was mellow fun. Roll Another Number Good too.
Theres an old saying in my house, if you dont know who sings a song, its probably Neil Diamond. I finished writing that and realised this is a different person. The music was good, Id give it a 3 but i resonated with it a little bit more than other ones ive deemed 3/5 so real rating 3.5/5
Not for me but good
Not a classic by any stretch. Would still rather listen to 45 minute of this, than not.
More my speed than I think I expected but can really only imagine myself appreciating this one again at a bonfire or otherwise low key setting in which I'm not the one controlling the tunes but can nod and say "Oh I like this one" when Tonight's the Night comes on.
Better than the last Neil album we had but still a pretty hard listen.
Decent rock album, his voice has never been my style.
Nice decent, easy listening, no bangers though.
Was okay, not really my thing tho.
He's an amazing songwriter with a terrible voice, who at times seems to relish deliberately making his voice sound worse. Not sure what to do with that, but his song writing always wins me over in the end.
Deece
Gotta love Neil on the Harmonica. His vocals are particularly abrasive on some of these tracks though. Not my favourite NY Album. *Lookout Joe & Come on Baby let go Downtown
Not my fave Neil Young material, but still a good listen.
Some good tunes on here with a mix of folk and country rock. Beginning to a feel a little saturated by all the Neil Young, but there are worse artists to be listening to loads of.
I wasn’t familiar with this Neil Young album, but it is familiar - Young’s breaking vocals, twangy guitar, harmonica and piano. Good folksy rock, and interesting album history on Wikipedia.
Enjoyable listen. The music was good but not sure about his voice tbf
Liked this but it is exactly the sort of thing I listen to. Country based roots folk music done really bloody well. Songs tell a story. Guitar hooks are great. If your not a fan of this Genre however, eI don't think you'll find too much special about it and it doesn't stand out hugely from quite a crowded field. but it is decent... and gets better throughout the album. Lookout Joe is probably my fave track and expect it'll be Bjorns too! 3/5 Just not special enough for a 4 or a 5.
Soothing/reflective
Not especially memorable, guy has a weird voice and it sits strangely between country and folk for me but I guess I didn't dislike hearing it.
He's done better
Some pretty rad guitar on the solo for Speakin' Out. Roll Another Number (For The Road) is great. New Mama has a cool ending. Solid Neil Young album, but I'm not huge on him. Would say I liked it better than Harvest.
Didnt really liked it that much it has spirit but musically I dont see much
This is a sad Neil :( Its good though. 3.5
Semibängeri Helt skön country/rock typ.
3
A compelling Neil Young album; he's even able to pull off using "Albuquerque" in a lyric. The emotion is strong, and the lyrics are interesting, but the melodies/music don't have me wanting to come back too often.
Pleasant listening but nothing really stood out to me
I'm cool with Neil Young, not a massive fan. This was fine, but nothing that really got me going
Solid album.
I think it’ll take multiple listens to get into it. I WANT to like it.
Too country for me
Det ikke helt dumt, men også bare lidt 70'er
Eh…
I understand why people like Neil Young, but I don't particularly enjoy him, and listening to a full album of his music is a bit of a chore for me. There are certainly some things to like about this album, but, but, but 3/5
Meh
Love Neil Young, album is ok but not my fav
okay
It's alright
Popular in his day. Earlier album. I found the vocal draggy and whinny. OK tunes and album.
Jeg elsket Neil i tenårene. Harvest er min foretrukne lørdagskaffe vinyl. Men denne her ble seig. Mulig jeg har utviklet en form for allergi mot den stemmen.
None of the songs did anything for me. Far from the quality of Harvest or Rust Never Sleeps
I have enjoyed Neil Young albums on this list a lot more than I expected because I don’t particularly care for Young’s music coming in. This album reminded me of my initial position. It was perfectly fine but felt pretty generic at time, and verging on self parody at others (for instance, the two title tracks). It was probably a 2.5 but I’ll round down bc I was bored.
Tonight was not the night Neil Young
kinda liked borrowed tune. ya not for me
Meh, this isn't really my thing
Another wrote Neil Young album. Nothing particularly memorable to me. The more often I get his albums in this project, the less I enjoy his voice.
This is #day670 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here's my second Neil Young record, not counting two with Crazy Horse and one with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Now, I really want to like this. Like, I'm being open-minded, you know. In fact, I'm even planning to revisit all of the albums mentioned above (maybe I missed something), and I'm also counting on After the Gold Rush and Harvest; at least those titles ring a bell. But somehow it's just not happening. The problem remains the same: the vocals. The delivery. The singing. Is it intentional? God knows I've tried. This is another 2 out of 5, though. Looking forward to #day671.
I really don't like Neil Young
2/5
Ok
Just recently given away. What boring drag of a 70s record. Only the title track is great, the rest sounds like demoes.
This is my third Neil Young album (I think) and at this point I can say that I have yet to hear a Neil Young album that does anything for me. At least with the other two albums I could find enough to like and keep my rating at a 3 but this one did not. Maybe if I grew up with him or knew more about why he is so influential I would have a greater appreciation for his music? The issue with that is these three albums haven't made me want to do that. 2/5
The uptempo songs are good
This is lowkey not my shit. Also I think this album is making me nauseous 2/5
Album 86 Top 3 "favorites" off the album: Roll Another Number, New Mama, Speakin' Out My parents both groaned when I told them this was the next album on my list. My mom said he was up there---err, down, rather---with Bob Dylan for most irritating voices. I think Dylan wins that competition, minimal dice. I asked my dad if Young was capable of holding a note longer than Dylan, and he said, "yes, but only marginally." Two tracks in, I think he was slightly unfair. I can sing to Young with far less work and artistic reimagining of the melody. Luckily, I am amused enough by Young's Jackman-esque vibrato that this listen could have been far worse. Fear not, good people. Dylan still wins in some categories that are more positive. He has Young beat when it comes to lyrics, for example. Tonight's The Night (opening track) is one of those songs that I would joke about with my mom, like We're Not Gonna Take It by Twisted Sister. "I think tonight might be the night, but I can't be sure. We should ask Neil one more time. Hey Neil, is tonight the night?" "Oh, yeah, alright, cool. Tonight's the night. Guys, did you hear that? Tonight. Tonight's the night." A few songs on this album had that potential. "Baby, I think he wants to go downtown. Neil, where do you want to go?" " I'll try to stop ragging on him now. I liked Speakin' Out for the instrumentation. I think Young's voice is the right one for that song and style. World On a String, I didn't like so much. I liked the grittier bass and the main vocal melody. I hated the higher harmony he was throwing in there. The timbres did not mesh well, and not in a way that added interest in my eyes. It was a choice. That is all. In contrast, Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown made sense with the higher vocals. The overall instrumentation and the accompaniment of other harmony layers rather than just the two provided a little more substance (veiling?) for the higher harmony. More variety in timbres -> better... gradient, for lack of a better word. Live Borrowed Tune Reaction: HOLY SHIT HARMONICA?! Sold. Vocals better be good. Mmm, they could be worse. Does this outrank Speakin' Out? I think so. Should I put it above? Well, it's one of those slower ones I *always* choose... but it would be dishonest to choose something not my favorite. Nobody reads this, anyway. I had the same initial reaction to Mellow My Mind, but then the vocals came in and I got annoyed. Oh well. I won't come back to Young unless he returns, but I've heard worse. As the saying goes, "at least it's not Bob Dylan." Diary entry: We are back again, again! Apartment: SECURED. Thank god for leaving places we don't want to be anymore!!!
I usually like Neil but this one was way too sloppy even for his standards. And boringly too bluesy too... In the same year he produced the much more powerful and inventive Zuma, why not including that album instead?
2 - not the best
Not the Neil Young album I would have chosen for this list. It’s his average work. At best.
Another banger by Neil Young. I gave him 20 minutes during my commute to work and that’s all he’s getting. How have I gotten 3 of his albums in my first 25?
Album 181. Tonight's The Night — Neil Young (1975) meh, it's not a crap, but I can't find anything notable in this folk rock album. 2/5 No liked songs
First listen: Sorry, what is this? I don't understand the albums musical or cultural significance. At all. Moving generously past the often shrill, whiny vocals, I don't even think the lyricism was particularly virtuosic, which is often what Neil Young apologists cling to. I'm not dead yet, and I wish I had listened to something else. 3/10 Second listen: this listen was a courtesy, and an attempt to understand the album better. I see now the themes of grief in the collection, particularly in the title track. But I still do not see why it's ranked so high on best albums of all time lists. There are better Young albums, and better albums in general, in this user's humble opinion. 4/10
I like Neil Young, but not for an entire album.
I understand the appeal of Neil but it’s honestly a little too country guy my taste
I dont like his voice
Too depressing
Pretty alright album. The guitar part in Speakin' Out and Come On Baby Let’s Go Downtown were my stand outs. Honestly, not my cup of tea tho. 4.6/10
Not for me not at all
I like Neil Young, but I didn't like this.
Love neil young but not a fan of this album
Whole lotta Neil Young goin on around here. Not my favorite example of the form. A couple of the tunes are catchy and okay, but overall it really highlights his singing, and he is really leaning into being out of tune. I don't need perfect singing, eg. Leonard Cohen, but this isn't working for me. Very much prefer On the Beach, which I had 5 albums ago. That album felt melancholy and full of feeling. This one feels kind of hungover, tired and a little queezy. Also extremely long. I didn't check, but it seemed interminable. I'm being a little harsh, but going with 2 stars I like "Albuquerque", song and place. Struck me as out of place on this album. Edit: I realized that the version I was listening to on youtube had a bunch of extra songs and alternate versions tacked on, thus the overly long opinion. Still 2 stars, but a more digestible 2 stars.
I couldn’t really get into it. I don’t know how to explain it, but it feels unfinished?
Yup, this sounded like Neil Young. It was ok. I was looking in the mirror earlier and noticed I was wearing a Neil Young shirt (technically it is a Hawaiian shirt with a ton of artists on it)
Some nice understated pedal steel and wonky-tonk piano. I can appreciate the looseness, but a bit too rough and raggedy to fully engage.
ne danke
Nah. Boring and repetitive. Neil Young has created far better music than this.
4/10
I was hoping to love this! I’m a big fan of harvest and harvest moon but it just didn’t hit the same. It felt sloppy and unfinished.
This was a mostly meh album for me. I liked a few songs, but most of the vocals sounded like Young struggling through the album.
Unremarkable. I wanted to leave a higher rating but the title track is abysmal and somehow appears TWICE on the album.
This gets a two because it has what has got to be the most boring first song on an album by a great artist.
I'm barely getting familiar to Neil Youngs discography thanks to this experience, but this album doesn't speak to me at all. Always seen the cover as a reference, but now that i've heard it, nothing stood out to me. Hopefull to find other more exciting albums than this.
This is OK, but it is definitely contributing to my theory that I like Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, but I'm not a huge fan of Crosby, Stills, Nash, or Young. Favorite track: "Albuquerque"
not his best work.
I do not care for Neil Young
Bit of a mixed bunch, but nothing to elevate to greatness.
They are speed running giving me Neil Young albums and they started from best to wrist doing it
After only having heard songs such as "Old Man" and "Harvest Moon", I was eager to give this album a listen after I saw it was by Neil Young, an artist who I thought I would appreciate listening to more of. Unfortunately throughout much of it, he is noticeably inebriated and his voice simply sounds bad. Part album, part drunken ramblings, needless to say I was disappointed. I was genuinely surprised by how bad his vocal performance was, because to my understanding he's not regarded as a bad singer. There are a couple of very sad songs on here that sound as if they were written in the depths of a depressive spell. Honestly they were kind of giving Charlie from Always Sunny in Philadelphia hunched over a keyboard singing about "The Nightman" after huffing copious amounts of paint, except I think Charlie Day's voice actually sounded better.
I was actually intrigued when I saw the album we would have to review yesterday was Neil Young, as he’s an artist I know the name of but am unfamiliar with his music. I had relatively high hopes, but man, his vocal performance was too bad to give it more than a 2. I did enjoy some of the instrumentation, but Neil’s voice really ruined some of these songs for me. Like, what the hell was “Mellow My Mind”? I was wincing at some points when his voice was so shrill, pitchy, and straight up exhausted. It’s safe to say I found this really disappointing as an introduction to him, and I’m hoping some of his other albums are better (assuming there will be more on this list). But the single word I can use to describe this listening experience was: tragic.
What have I done to deserve this? That voice really grates. When I think of voices that try to copy Bob Dylan (like Dire Straits or Waterboys) the result is good (and I don't particularly like Dylan) but when they copy Neil Young (like Pearl Jam or Mercury Rev) they just sound weedy, whingey, wailey. Those papery, feeble vibratos must do it for someone but they don't do it for me.
I have had a range of reactions to all of the Neil Young albums... from 5 stars for the genius of Everybody Knows this is Nowhere... to this one which my reaction is: just how many Neil Young albums are on this list???
Mwoa niet bijster interessant, heb een paar nummers voortijdig geskipt want het maakte het ophangen van de was niet leuker
Ik heb maar 2 liedjes geluisterd, maar ik was brak en irriteerde me enorm aan Neil youngs stem.
Quite like the musical side of this album, but Young's vocals sound so strained to the point of being uncomfortable to listen to.
Perhaps a 2 is a bit harsh, but I honestly thought this was on the poorer side of average. I don’t like Young’s vocals, and I’d even go as far as saying he has an objectively bad voice (I can’t even count the number of notes he missed here). Everything else about this felt very average, and it was certainly worse than After the Gold Rush.
The music (guitar) was ok, songs, very average.
I don't get it. This is Neil Young? I knew his name for a while, I don't quite see what all the fuss is about.
Maybe it's me, but this is yet another album I don't understand why is on this list.
I like some of his stuff a lot. Not this one though.
Not a fan of his voice, and the storytelling style of the songs felt a bit repetitive/simple ("<person> was an <occupation>" or something about walking down the street). It's possible he's telling important stories or making points, but being so separated from the zeitgeist/living context I don't feel compelled enough to go learn.
Big fan of Neil personally and respect his music but it is NOT for me.
Oh Neil.... You spend this entire album being squeaky and quavery in order to posture "vulnerability". The music is awesome. The lyrics are strong. You r delivery is weak. Anybody else could sing this with more conviction and more emotion and it would be more convincing. My Rating: 2/5
369/1089 - This is the greatest Neil Young album I've listened to.
Not to take anything away from Neil Young he’s a great writer but found the album quite dull as a whole I’m sure there would have been better stuff out there he’s recorded not sure why this was on here must have been quite influential at the time
First listening notes, nice airy and natural production style, with breathing room. I like the imperfections in the first track, the vocal pops when he gets close to the mic and distorts a bit and the bass strings buzzing - pure rawness, which means good energy to me! I read that this album was mostly recorded live in the studio which makes sense now! Awesome! Flows nicely into Speakin' Out, a classic blues swingy-style song. Great guitar playing I find out its Nils Lofgren, a guitarist I'll definitely look into more now, and his band he had with Neil Young - Crazy Horse. Already this record is introducing me to even more music, a great sign. Come on baby let's go downtown - this is a pretty simple song but that classic blues rock formula that never fails and I personally really like the guitar work in stereo. As a song I don't rate it that much but I do enjoy the sounds in it! Mellow my mind my worst track so far, another simple blues jam with so-so vocals over it. Roll another number also making me kind of sleepy. I enjoyed the acapella parts on new mama. Lookout Joe great chord progression and guitar playing again, tasteful - although its eeriely similar to some of the other songs on this record heh. Tired Eyes is a great name for the penultimate track of the album, as this is exactly what I have at this point after listening heh. Tonight's the night pt 2 just seems like an alternate take of the first track. I'd say altogether some good tracks on here, but nothing special for me as a whole.
No doubt, iconic and incredible talent and the raw melancholy is not my vibe today
loved the sound. poor lyrics imo. added some songs in my car playlist, feeling like a city cowboy or something. SNAKE EYES FRENCH FRIES AND I GOT ALOT OF GASS
Wow, this is aggressively not my thing. I’m sure it’s a good album to people who like this style of music, but I am not one of those people. Once again wish there were half stars, and this would be a 2.5, but there’s not, so it’s a 2. I did really like Lookout Joe, though!
really underwhelming. I thought I was a big Neil Young fan, but I guess he's just a put out a TON of music and the stuff that isn't on Harvest or a greatest hits compilation is really bad.
5/10
Didnt love this- not a big Neil Young fan, and this really didnt do it for me. His voice always seem a little whiney, and the songs were repetitive. Overall- not bad, just not my cup of tea. 2.5/5
Holy country song. That fist one was honestly quite the turn off. The album as a whole has a good chill vibe, but there are like two or three songs that are just…igh. I have to be very honest, I don’t not listen to this attentively at all, but still, th bad ones caught my attention. So not really my thing.
Mellow My Mind was outstanding. You have to really don't give a fuck to release something like this
Neil Young's Try to make a good album challenge: impossible mode
Not a fan of his voice
Not his best work. This def could be replaced by a band not represented on this list. Favs: Boreowed Tune, Tonight’s the Night
His voice remains awful. 2.
Eh
Not my cup of tea.
2/5
Feel like the harmonica could be better handled in this album (and I enjoy harmonica)
me aburrió tanto que ni lo quise terminar, perdón igual desp lo escucho completo pero bueno
Neil Young could record himself pissing into a bucket and it would have a good chance of making it onto the list.
Far from Neil's finest. Shoulda left it at Harvest.
Not a huge fan of this record.
Tonight’s the Night to Shut Up
I disliked this less than other Neil Young efforts.
It is decent, but it is Neil Young and this Southern Man don't need him around.
Aggressively middle of the road
sonically its really good. Thematically its quintessential Neil Young. Just didn't have a "banger" on it.
This is competent background music. I feel nothing about it. Even the off-key singing just blends in with everything else.
As much as I try, I just don’t like Neil Young’s voice. And none of the songs I can listen to his singing on are on this album.
I still don't care for his voice-no matter how many times he's on this list (and it is WAY too many). Why, why, why?
Has NY paid these guys to get so many albums nominated?
Jeez this guy!!
Still not a fan of NY, no matter how many albums this list throws at me. That said, it wasn't terrible either.
The vocals were hard to listen to, the instrumentation was boring, and the songs felt weak, it did get better near the end though, which saved it from 1 star.
No standouts, the usual 2 2
Naw not really
Very obviously talented musician whose songs I don’t really care for
Still don't really get Neil Young. I like the mood set by the stripped-down instrumentation and harmonica parts, I'd say it's fairly pleasant, but that's not even the point or focus of this album as I understand it. People describe the songs on here as powerful and devastating, and I just can't relate. It could be that I'm just not used to engaging with folk music this personal. I think back to Springsteen's Nebraska, though, and that one hit me pretty hard on several occasions. By contrast, this one failed to grab me in any meaningful way. Standouts: Mellow My Mind • Roll Another Number (For The Road) • Albuquerque
For dancin Romancin
I'm currently on meds for depression and sedatives for sleep, awaiting therapy. This album reminds me of that. Lookout Joe was ok.
I find Neil youngs music a bit like marmite. Some albums I love some to me are just boring. This one falls in the latter
Neil Young proves once again that he's a good songwriter and a terrible singer. Favorite song: Lookout Joe
Meh
Pretty forgettable, all things considered. I just have a little too much overexposure to this artist that I just consider "good" I don't see what this album brings to the table, it's all stuff I've heard before.
Look …. I like Neil Young as much as the next average fella, but this was just very meh
Pretty shit. Whoever wrote this book is fascinated with including bad albums by decent artists
ok. melodic but there were moments when the voice went from interesting to whiney,,,
Nummers okee, maar wat een katten-gejank
Didn't like this as much as Harvest. It's good stuff, but all the songs kinda sound the same. Just realized this is my fourth Neil Young album, and I don't understand why.
I liked Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young but I can't really warm to Young's solo stuff. His voice is not the one I like, and the music is too country/blues folk for my taste, which isn't too interesting. Probably I'm missing something because I usually enjoy 70s folk even country at points, but I just don't really like his music.
If Neil Young would fire the lead singer, this band could have been pretty good. Some of these tunes, with a different singer, would have been pretty decent. I liked the first couple tunes. Liked the piano parts on the album. Liked World on a String. I just can't get over the singer. I'm sure I have mentioned this on a few, if not all of the previous 5, 6 or 7 albums we've had from this list. 2
2 Oh, you’ve gotta be kidding me, another Neil Young album? For those keeping score at home, this is now our 6th outing with Mr. Young (7th if you count Buffalo Springfield), and if Harvest eventually shows up (which it assuredly will), that means we’ll have had a sequence of FIVE back-to-back releases of his that ultimately made it on this list. The only other artists I can think of that also accomplished this feat are The Beatles and Radiohead, both of which I also consider largely overrated, but I can at least admit there’s some musical evolution to be found across their five-album spans. What’s to be found here that you couldn’t also get out of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere? Drunken sadness? Alright, I’ll dial it back a notch because supposedly this album represents the grief Neil experienced after the loss of two close friends to drugs, and I wish that upon nobody. I hope this helped him achieve a sense of closure and peace, but if I’m being honest, it just didn’t translate to anything meaningful for me personally in my listening. And if I’m being super honest, I thought this album starts out absolutely terribly with a stretch of songs that sound like the worst open mic performance you’ve ever heard at your local pub. Yes, even worse than the two dudes I’ve seen at my hometown spot who played along to pre-recorded Phil Collins songs all night. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again - I think there’s a lot of personality and even beauty to be found in imperfect, yet impassioned vocals, but generally speaking, Neil’s performance doesn’t make me feel anything except annoyance (though his later stuff with Crazy Horse is a bit of a different story). Fortunately, this album has a jolt of life put into it out of nowhere starting with the track Come on Baby Let’s Go Downtown, but that energy seems to slowly drain away until you’re left listening to the exact same song that opened the album all over again. I’m all about bookending an album with a reprise if it’s done well, but Tonight’s the Night was not it for me. Appropriately, I’m going with the exact same rating I’ve given every other release in his aforementioned five-album run so far - a 2. I wouldn’t refer to anything from Neil’s body of work as one of the worst things I’ve heard, but I just don’t get it, man.
Para empezar con una cancion que repite la misma frase todo el rato no esta mal, ni fu ni fa, se hace repetitivo, al final te mete la chapa en medio de una cancion pero se le ve venir. De vez en cuando desafina mucho pero creo que es su cosa.
4/10
Didn’t really care for this. Albuquerque and lookout Joe were enjoyable but I really just don’t enjoy his vocals. Maybe it is an acquired taste but I just don’t get it. Band sounds fine but I can’t enjoy the music because of this. Listened twice and didn’t click with me.
I’m not a fan of his voice, and not much into folk music. This was a miss for me.
Neil young not for me
So far, this was the worst of all the bad Neil Young
No hooks. Not even great writing.
Not a big fan of neil young
Neil Young is the blues for white people who won't listen to black people. It's fine and nothing special.
coñazo coñazo coñazo tiene cosas guays pero simplemente no es mi estilo. Pero por lo menos me lo he escuchado y asi puedo reafirmarme en que efectivamente, no me gusta. 2/5
it's ok
Spøjst, at Harvest fungerer så godt med hans stemme. Den her var ikke lige mig. Blev lidt bedre i sidste halvdel af pladen.
Did not vibe with this one. Strange as I like Neil Young, but only really liked Tired Eyes here.
Niet mn ding
Not the biggest Neil fanboy but I'll give it a shot! It was okay. Not something I'd seek out again. I love 70s rock but just can't get into Neil.
This list has made me a much bigger Neil Young fan than I could’ve ever imagined. However I am so sick of repeat artists. It’s been more than 2 months since I’ve had a week without Neil Young or Nick Cave. I just don’t see how this album deserves an extra slot or what it’s doing any better than the other Neil Young albums on here. So personally (3/5) but I’m docking a point for repetition
So boring Fav: New Mama
Ehhhhh. This is okay. I HATE Neil Young's voice. He can write really strong songs, but overall....it is a fine album. The isolated vocal parts definitely are doing no one any favors. Fun country vibes throughout tho Liked Songs: "Tonight's the Night" , "Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown" , "Roll Another Number (For The Road)" , "Lookout Joe"
There is far too much Neil Young on here and his voice is annoying.
5/10 Dude can't sing
I’ve never cared much for Neil Young… and this record did virtually nothing to move the needle for me.
I thought I liked Neil young until this challenge. How many fucking albums can one person have on this list! It’s like he sponsored the book!
“I’m sad all my friends are dying from drugs, what should I do about it? Oh I know, drugs!” This wasn’t good. Not a song, not a chorus, not a moment of it. Just a bad album from start to finish. A real chore to have to listen to. I think amateur musicians like half-assed tossed off records because they’re bad musicians; and so lazy, badly played and sung music reminds them of what they produce and makes them think “celebrities, they’re just like me!” But I’m not an amateur musician. I like things where people work hard to try to make them good. I like perfectly crafted pop songs and prog rock and Steely Dan. People who are good at making music and work really hard to make something that is good. Multiple takes. Thought and care put into the creative process. Not being too wasted to write a coherent lyric. You know, actually giving a shit. Therefore, I don’t like this.
There are 7 neil young LPs on this list. That is too many, and I don't see what is so remarkable about this one.
Just boring tbh
i can’t stand whiny cowboy music
It's alright but it's a slow pace for me
Oof. I'm a big fan of Neil Young in all his incarnations, but this was atrocious. I've said before that I really shouldn't enjoy his voice, but this is the second album now that I've heard where he's just awful. His singing here is dreadful.
One of those albums that musically is very interesting and has a lot of history but it just didn't really connect with me for the most part. Still had a few good songs. I know Neil Young has some better songs in there, so we'll see. 4/10
man this was rough. here is the thing, neil is just a terrible singer. it's hard to get past that on a good day. on this one, it overwhelms everything else
Some of the more energetic songs were cool.
Oh great…yet another Neil Young album. What’s next? More Bob Dylan? Maybe another fucking Techno/EDM album 😒. This shit was ok but unnecessary. 100% could have gone my whole life without hearing this.
Hot take, I just don't enjoy Neil Young's voice, but then again I just don't like it when singers aren't trying to hit the notes. 2*
Chill, but again i don't really feel engaged by this.
Hans första på listan kändes roligare
All down hill since After the Gold Rush really.
Got sick of his voice by the end.
This was boring and got way too country by the end. I've yet to find the solo Neil Young that is supposedly so legendary. It's fine, but it's not even like Dylan where I may hate him personally but he knew how to write a song. These are just really generic sounding beer drinking songs from Texas or whatever. His voice is distinct, but not particularly great. That's about it, maybe it's just the tone and cadence of his voice that people love.
Couldn't finish it. Couldn't distract me from data entry at work. One of my dad's favorites but I do not get it.
Not really my type of music. It's good for what it is I guess but it's too "American" for me and, frankly, boring. I started listening quite loud but kept lowering the volume which is quite telling.
Dull
I'm a NY fan but I've never listened to this entire album from top to bottom. The title song is on his greatest hits, but it's an acquired taste with it's rawness and stressed vocal, not for a casual listener. That vibe carries throughout the album. The band is tight and in synch. I'm not 100% sure but it feels like a live album or recorded during a live set with no fine tuning or overdubs. His voice goes sideways more than a few times, especially on the grating "Mellow My Mind". The only song I actually enjoyed was "Lookout Joe", the rest was just off for me. Of all his albums this would never make my list, I can think of 4-5 others that I'd select first. Honestly, I didn't really enjoy it and would likely never listen to it again. 3 stars maybe.
this was ok. Kinda whiny. Not my favorite.
Mid
My 4th? 5th? 17th? Young album. None have a left any real impression. It’s fine, but I still dont get the reverence.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's the godfather of grunge. You can hear from this album just how much Kurt Cobain took to heart that you can screech your way through songs/parts of songs. Knowing that doesn't make this album any better. What a slog. 2/5
Meh. Bluesy, but nothing spectacular. His whiney voice can get a bit annoying and preachy, but some of the melodies were OK
If Bob Dylan could pick a note to sing, he'd still be worse than Neil Young. That being said; too many stinkers on here to honestly recommend it to anyone.
