Jazz Samba

Finally a jazz album that doesn’t leave me enraged after listening! Smooth, easy-going background music. However, all the tracks blend into each other, and I can’t picture myself actively putting this on

Really soothing and engaging at the same time. I felt like I was somewhere else. Difficult to score though as I don't listen to that many instrumental albums. It was enjoyable but did get repetitive. Highlights: Samba Dees Days O Pato

It's and alright sounding album, but it presents an incredibly gentrified version of Bossa Nova. I can't think of a situation I would pick this up over the real thing whenever I want my fix of 60's brazilian music.

Some the best jazz that I've heard in awhile, but ultimately it's hard for me to see myself listening to this outside of just background music. I need to learn to listen to jazz in a more active way if I'm ever going to get more into Jazz.

Slowly starting to enjoy jazz more and more with this list! Smooth and enjoyable, what’s not to like?

Voilà une chronique qui me sort un peu de mes sentiers battus. On quitte les caves froides de Manchester et les entrepôts new-yorkais pour se retrouver sous le soleil de Rio, ou plutôt, dans une église de Washington D.C. où ce disque a été enregistré. Paradoxal, non ? Un peu comme moi en train de chroniquer un album de jazz brésilien. Mais le projet "1001 Albums" est ainsi fait : il vous force à l'éclectisme, et parfois, c'est pas plus mal. En 1962, Kennedy est à la Maison Blanche, la guerre froide bat son plein, et pendant ce temps, deux Américains, Stan Getz au saxophone ténor et Charlie Byrd à la guitare, décident de faire découvrir la bossa nova à leurs compatriotes. Et "Jazz Samba" est littéralement le patient zéro de l'épidémie de bossa qui a déferlé sur les États-Unis au début des années 60. Avant ça, pour l'Américain moyen, la musique brésilienne, ça devait se résumer à Carmen Miranda avec une corbeille de fruits sur la tête. Et il faut bien le reconnaître, dès les premières notes, on est transporté. C'est doux, c'est chaloupé, c'est la bande-son idéale pour siroter une caïpirinha en terrasse. Le son de Getz, surnommé "The Sound", est d'une fluidité et d'une chaleur incroyables. On a l'impression que son saxophone a passé sa vie à attendre ces mélodies brésiliennes. En face, la guitare de Charlie Byrd, plus classique, presque sage, tisse une toile délicate sur laquelle Getz peut s'épanouir. C'est d'ailleurs Byrd qui est à l'origine du projet, après un voyage en Amérique du Sud qui l'a laissé sur le cul. Il a ramené des disques dans ses valises et a convaincu tout le monde que c'était le futur. L'album s'ouvre sur le célébrissime "Desafinado" d'Antônio Carlos Jobim. C'est le tube, la porte d'entrée. L'interaction entre le sax de Getz et la guitare de Byrd est sublime et on sent deux mondes qui se rencontrent : la mélancolie du jazz cool de la côte Ouest qui vient flirter avec la saudade brésilienne. Le mariage est heureux, personne ne peut le nier, on se laisse porter, on dodeline de la tête, on se dit que la vie est plutôt chouette. C'est une musique qui respire l'optimisme, une sorte de parenthèse enchantée avant que le monde ne devienne vraiment trop compliqué. On y trouve aussi "Samba Triste", qui, comme son nom l'indique, est plus mélancolique. C'est là qu'on touche à l'essence de la bossa nova : cette tristesse douce, cette joie voilée. C'est pas du gros blues qui tâche, c'est plus subtil, plus insidieux. Ça vous prend par surprise, au détour d'un accord, c'est le genre de morceau qui vous fait penser à des amours perdus, à des étés qui se terminent. Bref, ça fait son petit effet, même sur un vieux coeur de rocker comme le mien. Alors pourquoi seulement 3/5, me direz-vous ? Pourquoi ce vieil aigri ne met-il pas la note maximale à ce classique intemporel ? Eh bien, c'est là que mon ressenti personnel entre en jeu. Autant je reconnais l'importance historique du disque, sa beauté formelle et son influence (sans lui, pas de "Getz/Gilberto" un an plus tard, et ça, ce serait un drame), autant... je m'emmerde un peu. Voilà, c'est dit. C'est propre, c'est lisse, c'est impeccablement produit. À l'époque, j'aurais probablement trouvé ça révolutionnaire, mais avec mes oreilles de 2025, habituées aux dissonances de Sonic Youth et aux murs de son de Godflesh, ça sonne un peu trop propre. C'est le genre de disque que ma mère aurait pu passer le dimanche après-midi. Et dieu sait que j'aime ma mère, mais on n'a pas tout à fait les mêmes goûts musicaux. C'est ce que j'appelle de la "musique de décoration". C'est parfait pour mettre en fond sonore pendant un dîner, ça ne dérangera personne. Personne ne viendra vous dire "c'est quoi ce bruit ?". Et c'est bien ça le problème. La musique que j'aime, elle doit déranger un peu, elle doit bousculer. "Jazz Samba" me caresse dans le sens du poil. C'est agréable, mais ça ne me laisse pas une marque indélébile. Le son, malgré sa qualité d'enregistrement pour l'époque, a pris quelques rides. La section rythmique américaine, bien que compétente, n'a pas le naturel chaloupé des Brésiliens. On sent parfois une certaine raideur, un manque de "ginga", comme on dit là-bas. C'est un détail, mais pour moi, ça fait la différence entre un bon album et un chef-d'oeuvre absolu. En fin de compte, "Jazz Samba" est une étape importante dans mon voyage au pays des 1001 albums. C'est une pièce maîtresse de l'histoire du jazz et de la musique brésilienne et c'est un disque d'une élégance folle, qui a ouvert des portes et métissé les cultures. Pour tout ça, il mérite le respect. Mais pour l'émotion brute, pour la cicatrice qu'un disque peut vous laisser, je repasserai. Ça reste un excellent album pour les dimanches pluvieux ou pour faire croire à vos invités que vous êtes un homme de goût.

Good album. Nothing mind blowing.

This is hard to rate. Just felt like generic 1960s bossa nova that you would hear as the soundtrack to every movie from that time period set on a tropical island. I'd listen again, but I wouldn't really consider it "good". 3.5 stars

Jazz Samba is tight. Great background music. Would definitely have in my workday rotation.

I liked it! But I find it hard to distinguish from other Jazz. It is probably my ignorance towards the genre, but I don’t know what sets this apart. With that in mind, it was an easy listen, and I wouldn’t mind a few more albums like it in the list.

I can dig it! A little jazz departure is always welcome. Was really confused by the name Charlie Byrd, thinking it was Charlie "Bird" Parker, but it's not. We've gotz another Getz album on here, I think it was the Getz/Gilberto one that I really loved. This one, it's nice, but not much staying with me. Still, a good album and I'm glad to have heard it. Favorite tracks: Desafinado, Samba Triste, Samba de Uma Nota So. Album art: Another of those old classic jazz type covers from the '60s. It's a framed abstract painting with the text above. That old school Verve logo is great too. Solid. 3.5/5

It was really nice, until I realized I finished the album 30 minutes ago and couldn't discern it from the other jazz I was listening to

I don't know much about bossa nova, but this was a lot of fun. Bonus points for this being recorded in D.C. and one of the artists being from Suffolk.

I didn't expect this album to be very good but it was half the length of normal albums that we have been getting (so it was quicker to listen through), it was nice and jazzy, fairly quick tempo-y (made you want to shake it a bit), and all that - from a 1962 album.

3rd jazz album of the week and my heart sank! Thankfully the samba element was pretty strong and the trumpet pretty smooth and not overbearing, albeit it all just blends into one after a while. Quite jolly, perfectly listenable but doubt I will ever listen again.

Oh no! Jazz. I am not a fan, but this is light and upbeat - I like the guitar and the samba rhythms. A surprisingly pleasant listen.

I don't dislike it. You can tap your toes, sway back and forth in your chair. It's uplifting. It's also kind of boring. But... I'm torn. I'll never seek this out again but it was alright this time.

La fusión entre jazz y bossa nova hace de este álbum un imprescindible en cualquier discografía que se precie. Innovador y creativo, fue el primer disco de bossa nova grabado por músicos de jazz estadounidenses, y llegó a colocar su sencillo de éxito, "Desafinado", en las listas de éxitos populares. Me gustan también "Samba de Uma Nota Só" (conocida también como "One Note Samba") y "O Pato". Por todo el disco se desliza el romanticismo y la melancolía propios de la bossa nova. Sin ser un fan del jazz, este disco emociona más allá del disfrute de la buena música.

I'll say what I often say about trad-ish jazz. I listened to it while working and it's excellent for that. Did I fail to notice it had finished for quite some time? Yes.

Very pleasant, I liked how prominent the saxophone and guitar are. The percussion was lively without being overbearing. Would put on again, but I think this is best suited for background music vs. active listening.

Pretty forgetful album. Another jazz album which blends into the background. Its nice music. Highly skilled musicians but it just doesnt catch my attention. Not a single track made me want to play it again. It reminds me of the hotel band in one of those fancy places. Good to relax to though. I'd give it a 2.5 if i could. I cant so a low 3 it is.

This album is nice, and has some great classic Samba tracks, it does sort of teeter on the quality of songs. Some are fun or are very well arranged and others are just....not very interesting. Suffering the same problem as The Girl From Ipanema. But this album doesn't have a song as good as Girl From Ipanema, but I do think it's a bit more consistant

Pretty on-the-nose name for an album. My reaction can probably best be summarized as "yep, that's what jazz samba sounds like". Pleasant enough as background music, but not something I'm going to seek out.

Better than most jazz albums. A couple of the songs I really enjoyed (especially Desafinado the opener. The songs do start to blend together after a while but it's nice that the album is on the shorter side. 6/10 (3/5)

Time for my second bossa nova album involving Stan Getz of the week! Yeah this album is very similar to Getz/Gilberto, which is an album that I listened to 6 days ago. My thoughts are basically the same, with the exception of this album not having as much of a cultural impact despite coming earlier. I guess it's one of those things where this album helped lay the foundations, but Getz/Gilberto perfected it to the point where it's the one that popularized the genre. Basically, this is the Wolfenstein 3D to Getz/Gilberto's DOOM. Still a good album, but not quite as great as the other one. The sound is still here, although the singing that I really liked from that other album is missing. What gives? Anyways, this album is perfectly fine, but a bit of a redundant pick when you have a better and more culturally impactful album from one of the same artists that is also on this list. High 3/5.

Yazz Floot. I think it’s safe to say that these types of classic jazz standard albums are important to almost no one. Anywhooo, the year is 1963 and we’re all hanging out in our family’s basement bar with our naugahyde furniture. Throw on the Jazz Samba album and let get this orgy rolling.

Much prefer the Getz with Joao Gilberto samba stuff, but glad to hear Charlie Byrd's take on some of the numbers. Very nice.

Fun, up tempo, and not too experimental

Great jazz album. Keeps moving forward and reinforcing itself with fantastic time changes but maintains a sense of relaxation and lazing on the beach with phenomenal guitar sections supported by the percussion.

Sorry, all jazz sounds the same to me. I had this on at work and it’s the perfect background noise, and I really enjoyed it, but I also didn’t realize when the album was done and when Spotify was playing other similar music.

I reviewed Getz/Gilberto not very long ago, but outside of that, I'm not familiar with Stan Getz, and I've never heard of Charlie Byrd before. I'm not very well acquainted with Bossa nova music, so I don't have much to say about this album, other than it was very relaxing and pleasant to listen to. I always hate that I don't have much to say about albums like this (I just had Count Basie yesterday), but once I'm done with this project, I'm going to go back through all of the jazz, samba, and other niche genre albums so that I can be more familiar with them.

This project has taught me this: Brazilian samba/jazz is a thing I dig.

Jazz Samba is smooth, its classy, it feels like living a day in stereotypical 1950s/1960s new age corporate North America, but it also lacks something. It is great as a coherent record you slap on in the background of your day-to-day life, ignoring the music itself, but even diving deeper for a moment you'll kind to find there isn't much there. Its elevator music, and while I like my fair share of what many call "muzak," this needs more layers than it presents to be anything that'll stick with me. Its a pleasant time whilst listening, but I doubt I'll remember the music itself much longer. I'll take the beautiful vocals of the Gilberto's any day.

I don't know enough about either jazz or samba to know whether this is technically very good. It certainly appears to be well executed and I'd listen again on a summer's evening with a glass of chilled wine thinking about the extotionate cost of living in the South of France.

When I close my eyes I'm transported to a serene summer night under a Gerudo moon.

I'm not a huge fan of jazz, but this was pretty good. I'm overly tired today and the album is putting me to sleep. I think I would enjoy it as background music while hanging by the pool. 3/5

Soy un señor de los 70 fumando un puro y bebiendo whisky en un bar creyendome el main character de mi propia vida y pensando en todos aquellos sueños que no pude lograr por un amor no correspondido.

This was the style of popular music Rock and Roll rebelled against. I turned 21 in the early 70s so bars that played Samba music were usually full of newly divorced men in full mid-life crises mode who fancied comb-overs and polyester leisure suits, and drove convertible sports cars. The place always reeked of English Leather or British Sterling cologne. To us, this was the music of the horrifically aging and uncool generation. Now, it’s a music style—but it’s heavily laden with awful (but funny) generational memories for me. It was hard to be objective, so let’s call it a 3/5.

I like this more than some of the other samba stuff I've heard. I think the jazzier elements of it put it a bit more in my wheelhouse. Love the sax in particular.

I've never really listened to Jazz before so it's hard for me to compare this to other Jazz albums. With that being said, I did enjoy a majority of the songs on this album. I don't think I'm going to listen to more jazz on my own though.

Good background music

Great musicians but bossa nova ain't boss. Two Americans do a great job but they aren't the Brazilian masters. Cool for dinner prep or a cocktail.

I didn't know what to expect from this, but I enjoyed it more than I expected. Glad it wasn't any longer but it was very atmospheric and emotion evoking, despite being instrumental. Bass, piano and sax is a great combination. Really nice background music, but not much more than that. Would give it a 2.5 if possible

This was funky! Really enjoyed the vibe of this album and it’s definitely not what I’d normally listen to. I got a bit over the sound after a full album. Would probably only revisit individual songs rather than a full album next time.

Jazz isn't normally my thing, but this is really good and glad I got a chance to enjoy it which I wouldn't have done without this coming up on the list.

I forgot I was listening to this and ended up staring stupidly at my phone thinking I was on hold. I shouldn't be drinking when I do these reviews. The next day when I was sober I discovered a cool, chill album. It's more the sort of thing you would put on as background noise than actively listen to though.

The last time we had a jazz album I said I wanted some sax, so here we are. Bossa Nova isn't really what I had in mind but it's enjoyable. I gave the last one a 3, this gets a 3 too, but if there's any more granularity this goes above it.

Finally an album I had no knowledge of! A bit soft for me on first listen, though the latin vibes did make me want to drive an open top Cadillac along a Cuban coast road... or something. Need to listen more... at some point.

Much preferred the previous Getz record that cropped up on here. This is decent, nice background music, but didnt grip me like the other one. Nice enough, but I’ll stick with what I know on this one

Didn't enjoy this quite as much as the last getz album, the lack of singing detracting from the beach side cocktail drinking atmosphere. It was still pleasant, wouldn't mind it on in the background, but i couldn't recall any specifics now.

Very jazzy, very samba. I didn't realise quite how influential Brazilian music is - other than the titles, The Girl from Ipanema and One Note Samba are (for me) Sinatra hits, however both had their origins in South America. This album was punchy and lively. Unlike the other Getz album, it is less background, laid-back jazz at a hotel: more like foreground jazz at a relaxed café.

Just like his previous album I quite liked this, it's fairly relaxing and nice in the background. Easy listening jazzy samba style (which I've now found is called Bossa Nova) that doesn't overstay its welcome.

I guess it's good background music. Wanted a bit more samba and a bit less jazz.

I didn’t hate this, which is massive for me. Jazz gets right under my skin. It’s lovely to have to listen to the kinds of things I’d avoid though because I could get along with this. A bit.

I understand why people would want to listen to this. The saxophone gives the songs so much life and emotion, and the sound is dampening but the same time jumpy and lively. Even though it was great, I did not care for it much, and I probably wouldn't listen to it again. Also I thought the songs were missing a little substance.

Nice. I was going to give this a 4 guessing what I'd think about it if I heard it as a more jazz-sympathetic teen. I cannot give an album with a track called "Samba Dees Days" more than 3. music: appreciated. (⌐□_□)

I listened to this and thought “dang Stan Getz sounds cool” so I texted my father in law (jazz guy) and he recommended a bunch more Stan Getz for me to check out. Gonna become a jazz guy now

Solid jazz

I guess bossa nova was all the rage when this album came out. Maybe because this album came out. Either way, I don't get the craze. The album is fine, fairly smooth, but it's just not overly inspiring or distinctive for me. I it on a few times and had no idea when it was over and other songs had crept onto my playlist. So there's not really anything that stands out to me and says "this is what these guys do that others don't." Once again it probably shows how naive I am about jazz.

love the album artwork already, so let’s hope i like it, i do love a bit of jazz anyways. i did indeed like this album, was just nice to have on in the background in my cosy room with the rain outside. i also feel like i really recognised the 5th song from somewhere, just not sure where. easy listening i guess and would listen again.

Haven't listened to much jazz but this was kinda nice

3.5/5 - I will round down for this one since I foresee a lot of these songs getting skipped on my playlist, however when I am in the mood, they will be delightful. Desafinado - Starts off really strong, w/ a shy but flirty cadence. found myself dipping my shoulders with the entire song. Samba Dees Days - Its ok. Would be cool to set to a Rube-Goldberg machine that primarily consists of hot-wheel tracks. Ok so I stopped checking into individual songs after the second and just let myself get lost a bit. A gray area in music, sometimes that means the piece wasn't captivating enough for me, other times it is a mood matcher that can keep and even set pace for the ramblings of mind. Latter is true for Jazz Samba. This is actually the first one that I listened to twice in a row. Now that may be because I was working and it felt like great productivity music - but hey I only see that as a plus.

As the name suggest jazz, upbeat easy listening, it is nice but still not what I’d sit and listen too

I feel like Stan Gets drove the popularity of samba almost singlehandedly. This was pleasant, non threatening. Not experimental jazz, something that has a time and place in the early 60s. I think Gilberto/Getz is better though

Jazz, low-key vibes. Good for a casual dinner party, but it sometimes gets a little crazy with the sax (which I've learned is the whole point of this album). Big fan of track 6, E Luxo So I was going to make a note that I liked the album more and more and it went on, but then I realized this album ended and I was listening to other jazz artists.

Desafinado and Samba Tristie were clear favourite - Samba Tristie I can imagine warm summer nice dancing on the street.

Fine. A couple strong tracks. Another album that makes me think of a brunch at a museum restaurant primarily attended by older people.

It's light. Can't feel strongly about it but it was alright. One of the few albums that I'd like to be longer

The importance of this album implicitly understood, and the modern wet rag impact is explicitly felt. There's a reason this was followed by an encore album with an actual bossa nova player --- current fans will say it was to meet demand, sane listeners will recognize it was to capitalize on a short trend that has outlived its welcome. Every track is as creative (for its day and audience) as it is challenging (for its day and audience). I keep using A/B comparisons because there is nothing here that has an engaging place in the modern scene. It belongs in a museum for the best and worst reasons.

Not my cup of tea but good elevator music

Not my typical pick of music but a nice 30 minutes of relaxing jazz tunes.

Good Jazz, Stan Getz tends to have solid variety in his sound while not giving "Tom and Jerry" vibes

Samba, bossa nova, bit of jazz influence. It's a nice album for a song or two, and then the constant drum rhythm just drills a hole in your head and you're not able to hear anything. Listen in small doses and you will enjoy it.

Simple, charming, elevatoresque.

Good album, nice vibe, musicianship was great, but felt like mostly it just came and went, no real standout moments or memorability. Would definitely put it on for something to have in the background.

I liked it overall. It can sound like elevator music at times. The saxophone and guitar play really well off of each other.

There were moments but not enough

Two minutes in, I thought this was going to be boring, dated, past its prime. but then I ended up repeating two-thirds of the songs to give them another listen. This guy's tone is smoother than I can remember ever hearing out of a sax. It's like he has no tongue.

Uitermate rustige muziek voor op een zondagochtend in een hotellounge. Ik vind dit heel moeilijk om goed te kunnen beoordelen. Ja, het klinkt best prima. Maar nee, ik ga dit niet heel vaak op zetten ben ik bang. Hoeveel sterren geef je dan zoiets? Misschien moeten we al lang blij zijn dat Astrud Gilberto er niet doorheen zingt.

Very chill and relaxing background music. Was very surprised how much I enjoyed having this on in the background in my office.

It's pleasing, but never goes that far beyond being a pleasant sensation.

Half of this is sublime, the other half sounds like a Benny Hill soundtrack.

This was decent. I liked it even though it didn't really hold my attention. Probably the combination of my enjoyment of the playing but not being a huge fan of samba.

This was ok. I didn't really have any strong feelings either way. If this was on, I wouldn't change it, but there's nothing here making me want to relisten either. 3/5

Had to look up what bossa nova is and then realized it's basically just lounge music. And for a lounge music album this was quite enjoyable. Might add it to my work music playlist

Desafinado, Samba Triste

Important and great album, but most likely not ending up on any of my playlists.

It was raining quite heavily both times I listened to this album and it seemed to fit quite nicely. Although I could imagine this on a sunny tropical beach too. No particular favourite track, nice dreamy listen overall.

Very well done Jazz Record, but Jazz isn’t my top pick for music, I do enjoy it, so I’d give it a 7/10 solidly

Never been a ‘sit back and appreciate the musical complexities of jazz’ kinda guy. However, I do sometimes enjoy it as background. I’m sure jazz musicians really appreciate when their art is referred to as background music. But, everything has its purpose. This album Getz me in the mood to sit at a coffee shop and pretend to do important work.

I enjoyed this, it made for an interesting stroll. I felt cheeky walking around the neighborhood

Oh boy, jazz. Jazz is totally cool in small doses, but it is a genre I have a hard time listening to full albums of on repeat. The bossa nova flavour of this jazz is quite nice, lending a structure and fun to the music that other jazz can be sorely lacking. With that structure and fun comes the distinct feel of "interlude music" however, and you can find yourself being transported to a waiting room, or a lobby, or an elevator, or a montage scene in a movie where the main character spends several hours cleaning their house or something. As is typical for jazz, the instrumentation is the highlight here. The bass, guitar and drums were all fantastic, and zoning in on any of them was a pleasure on every track. The soloist is there to provide melody for people to center their listening on, but it really isn't the stand out track to me on any of these numbers. I probably won't revisit this, but I won't be upset if a similar album pops up once every couple months.
