Reviews (page 2 of 11)
This was cool, I liked a lot of the drum parts in particular. The songs really blended together for me though
I don't have much to say. It was a good album. Solid British rock, but wasn't necessarily my vibe.
Meh. Talented, solid. 3/5. Might be worth a revisit at some point.
After riding the punk wave, they finally arrived at post punk’s cleaner, tighter sound and it suits them better. Siouxsie’s voice is about as good as it gets here and the songwriting is mostly good.
Siouxsie and the Banshees is a band I've always kind of ignored because the few songs I've heard by them were just okay and not very memorable. But I've always thought of them as an early goth rock band. What's funny is that this album, Juju, is considered a really important album in how goth rock developed, but the band was always pushing back on that label and didn't want to be called a goth band. Anyway, this album isn't bad, but it was just average. There was one song that was a little better than the others, but the rest just sound the same.
I've always liked the opening to Spellbound, and I appreciate their unique sound, just am not that into it. Also, the 7+ minute Voodoo Dolly track is pretty weak.
Like Jerfferson Airplane met grunge. Not a fan really.
I enjoyed a lot of the guitar and bass and I can see how this became an influential point in post-punk and what came after. I appreciate that Siouxsie is one of the great British singers of all time but the style of singing is just not for me and really puts me off. Also features the classic 80s production hallmarks of too much treble on the guitars, too much reverb on the vocals and not enough punch from the drums. They do a great job of creating this dark, gothic atmosphere for her singing to float around in. I do get it and it’s great for what it is, but it won’t be one I’m coming back to listen to myself.
Souxsie is a recurrent band within my family. However, although enjoying an auditive habit from my part, it could not please my ears. I could not connect with this album and it was difficult to finish. Of course, "Night Shift" was more bearable and even enjoyable. But the rest was just a no to me. Based on personal taste, only, not criticizing the quality of the album. Expected Marc rating: 3
I hate hearing british accents when they sing
Pretty spooky, more for spooky people than me
Temu Rush has a baby with Temu Joan jett
could NOT connect with these songs. spellbound was the only good one to me. which is actually their most popular from this album. but other songs were weird and creepy and i just did not and could not vibe with it. like i kept waiting for the album to end.
This is one of those bands I've been meaning to check out for ages. I really like it but I don't *love* it (I am so particular about a singer's technique and style and there's kind of a monotony to the vocals on this album that feels redundant even though she's clearly an incredibly talented vocalist) but overall a very enjoyable listen while I plug away at my work. I'm going to give it a 5 because the longer i listened the more the album had me spellbound (heh) but my accurate rating is 4.5
for me, that's the most influential siouxsie album, the perfect transition into a more structured post-punk sound that is very characteristic. it has changed me profoundly since the first time i listened to it, when i was 15. thanks sioux
What the hell did they put in this one. Ethereal. Otherworldly.
really loved some songs (nothing new) saved one
Theres good post punk, and theres bad post punk. This is not only good, but its great. 10/10 would listen again. And Voodoo Dolly is such a roller coaster
This is their masterpiece. It’s dark but melodic, dramatic but punky, danceable but harsh. Exactly how I like it.
Finally something I already love! This has been one of my favorite albums since 2004, when I started getting into goth music as a teen. I think this album is a masterpiece, and I've always felt that the Banshees are underrated (although this is my US-based, way-after-the-fact opinion, so maybe they were fairly rated). It seems most of the attention has been paid to Siouxsie's look, but the music feels unique from what others were doing at the time.
Siouxsie and the Banshees is another band that I wish I had discovered when I was younger. I've listened to them before now, but definitely hadn't known about them until I was in my mid-20s. I think my teenage self would have been really into them.
10/10
This was excellent. Will definitely be keeping this in rotation. I can definitely tell that the new AFI album was inspired by this group for sure!
that sounded really cool. i liked that
Back to back Siouxsie and the Banshees and it's been a delight. I was wavering between a 4 and a 5, but the more I listen to this, the more I think it deserves full marks.
The word “sublime” was coined to describe John McGeoch’s guitar tone.
Used to play this one when I’d bike around my town in fall/winter.
fucking stellar. siouxsie sioux was my main introduction to the goth rock genre and ultimately what led to me identifying with the goth subculture so strongly. this album is killer and i would argue has no skips (i may be very biased, but i also really don't see how the last 2 songs are weaker or all that different. it's one of their most cohesive albums imo). love love love her
Post punk’s finest guitarist’s finest hour
literally one of my favorite bands and records of all time haunting rhythmically sharp addictive in some places — absolutely devastating
An album that continues to be a lot of fun to listen to.
Huh, did not expect to find Siouxsie and the Banshees here. BUT OHHH. Okay, SATB is one of those groups I SHOULD have listened to before, but it never really felt like "my" kind of music, but I am SO glad I listen to this record. It's not just vibes, it has some pretty catchy tunes as well as good lyrics.
I've heard this album before but it just gets better upon every relisten. Darkly atmospheric with a sort of frenetic passion. Makes me feel badass listening to it. Siouxsie made me want to be goth til I realized I couldn't get into most goth acts the same way haha.
this is so fire like 10/10 tf so fire on my kneesssss
Comes on strong and never let's up
Muy buen álbum, lo guarde. Algunas canciones ya conocía. Nota: 9/10
There’s a reason the Banshees went into gothic rock and alternative pop after this record. They knew they never make pure post-punk as good as this so they didn’t try
I love this one, I listen often
Really high highs, reminds me slightly of LA witch
Pretty much all of them with the slight exception of Night Shift and Sin In My Heart!
All
9/10
Strong 9 to light 10
Pretty fire, first few songs especially, 4.5
If u know me u know i LOVE THIS ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!! I have the album cover printed out and stuck on my wall it's so gorgeous and gothic and moody and the guitar is amazing and the lyrics and siouxsie's voice YESSSSS Foundational text for goths favourite songs: night shift & monitor
amoramor
its great, refreshing, new, musically intense
9/10 Best songs: Spellbound, Arabian Night, Halloween, Night Shift, Voodoo Dolly Siouxsie and the Banshees is a revelation. I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised: I am a huge fan of later bands who cite Siouxsie as an influence, after all. But I'm not a particularly big fan of punk, but I do like some goth rock, so whether I'd like this album was always going to be up in the air. Turns out I really like it: it's a terrifically atmospheric, dark, and heavy album, with Siouxsie's piercing wails sailing above the music. Great music, great lyrics, just great stuff. So glad to hear a (distrrssingly rare) female-led band on this list, too.
purrr
Rate this a 5 stars
5 out of 5. Love the energy and Siouxie's voice.
John McGeoch, who I didn't know before this record, makes this album. Everyone else does a great job too, but that guy and his guitar really ups this. I'm a sucker for Sonic Youth Brancaist experimental guitar tones of the sort. This with the dark "gothic" label together creates such an enjoyable vibe. I cringe a bit when I say that, but trust me, I feel very positively towards this record. Those little noise and atonal tidbits give the record its cool alternative edge. Maybe this is why I like Allison from The Breakfast Club a lot. I personally would have never given her the make-over. Juju on that beat (9/10, 5/5 on this scale)
Yay!!! Goth music i like!!!
Great album; I love their sound.
Juju is up there among the best punk / post-punk albums. John McGeoch's guitar shines through and is perhaps as characteristic of the band's sound as the voice of Siouxsie Sioux.
I heard the rumor, I really enjoyed this! bring back Susie and the bananas!
Thoroughly enjoyed this
What a great album to listen to for the first time. This list is lacking in albums where the singer can actually sing.
yall already know 🦇
SO GOOD
This might be my favourite discovery so far on this journey. 6/5.
this album rocks. I read "Rip It Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978-1984" by Simon Reynolds a couple years ago, and that turned me on to a bunch of bands/albums I had heard of but never really checked out. "Juju" was one of those albums, and I had it on repeat for like 6 months. so much minor key goodness here. Siouxsie crushes her vocal performances. I've already noted I don't listen much to lyrics when I put music on, and upon relistening to this LP for this list, realized how dark a lot of the lyrics are. John McGeoch delivers some thrilling, knotty guitar work that has been influential in the decades since (if you're a fan of that aspect, check out his work on the Magazine albums "Real Life" and "Secondhand Daylight"). and the drums here pack a punch and keep driving the songs forward while avoiding unnecessary complexity.
I loved this. The guitar is so urgent and varied on every song. Siouxsie has a perfect presence for these songs. The whole band kills it. Kicks ass all the way through.
Spooky post-punk at its peak !
I love Siouxsie And The Banshees! This is a great album and I loved listening to it.
I was sort of expecting this to be good, but it's actually great. The first 3 tracks are incredible. Then Halloween is a miss. The rest of the album doesn't quite hit the highs of the beginning, but are all good tracks.
good.
No. 131 The music is fantastic, and Siouxsie's voice is making it a thousand times cooler.
wow into the light is sooo good so many bangers
Favorite track(s): Spellbound, Into the Light, Arabian Knights, Halloween, Monitor, Night Shift Foundational. Too bad everyone with piercings is busy listening to Fall Out Boy instead. Heard before Previous rating: 9/10
Despite several Siouxsie and the Banshees songs in my favorites, I listened to this album for the first time — and it was a success. The entire record jumps between energetic punk rock and calmer post-punk, yet you're never free of tension throughout the songs. This dark atmosphere is primarily supported by the vocals and guitar. We'd later hear sharp, slightly jagged riffs in the works of Johnny Marr, Dave Navarro, and John Frusciante, but it was John McGeouch who first dabbled in them. Siouxsie Sioux's voice will be familiar to fans of Florence + the Machine. Siouxsie's image, however, is the complete opposite — it's exactly what every '80s alt-girl wanted to be, and Tim Burton clearly modeled Lydia from Beetlejuice on her. It's rare that a studio album can rival a greatest hits collection in terms of density. A very pleasant surprise and a record that is truly worth to hear before you die!
yes so fucking good
This is an intense record. The entire band came to rock, especially Siouxsie, who leaves it all on the studio floor with virtually every performance. This pressing captures the power of her vocals well, especially on "Night Shift," where she eschews gothic charm and goes full-on real-life horror show. "Fuck the mothers; kill the others" almost three full years before The Smiths' "controversial" song "Suffer Little Children." This woman did not come to play! This is the only Siouxsie And The Banshees album I have on vinyl. I need to correct that. I've listened to my digital and physical copies of this record for this OAD over and over, and it gets better every time. Five stars.
Every time the list spits out a punk album with a female vocalist I jump for joy
very good and cool and fun i enjoyed a lot
Good Juju not bad Juju. Enjoyed alot. Great vocals cracking drums and nice jangly guitars.
This is one of my all time favourite albums of all time. And I only heard it a week ago. Its sounds years ahead of its time. From the opening bars of 'Spellbound' I was, hmm what's the word - mesmerised. Easy to see why Marr cites this track, and is a fan of the guitarist John McGeoch (formerly of Magazine). The guitar really is central, and constructs some beautifully complex sounds throughout. 'Voodoo Dolly' takes more of an experimental Joy Division' approach and arguably feels indulgent amongst the rest. But the more I listen the more I love this album's winding melodies, its untheatrical gothicism, the unhistrionic but pristine vocal, delivered with the punch of punk. It's pretty much the perfect album.
Love the gothic vibes on this one. Every song was a banger too, nice riffs. Bit muddy on the mixing - wish Siouxsie's vocals were a bit louder and clearer - but I enjoyed it nevertheless. Favourite tracks: Monitor, Sin In My Heart, Head Cut 5/5
A band I've heard of but never listened to. Easy to hear that this had a huge influence on lots of bands. To be honest I'm surprised it's not mentioned more given how good it is
I LOVE SIOUXSIE SIOUXXXX
Esencial.
Obsessed with this. The vibes are so dark and luxurious. A perfect album.
The music is fantastic, and Siouxsie's voice is making it a thousand times cooler. The drama in every song, the vocal accents and theatrics, the gothic monotonous rhytm with that wild, torn energy — it all makes Siouxsie and the Banshees so magnificent and recognizable. Simply amazing.
What a wonderful album. It is one of my favorites and also inspired a generation of goths.
Hella awesome, Spellbound is an exciting start and I love the dark textures throughout
Absolutely incredible one of the best albums I've listened to in a while.
Everything hits, except the cover art. Just sit back, and enjoy.
Another influential band that I've never listened to until today. I ended up listening to this several times as it is amazing. I can see that it influenced a lot of artists that followed. Definitely going to be adding this to my rotation from now on and will likely buy on vinyl. 5/5 amazing album.
Hot damn, what an album! Siouxsie is still the coolest and "Spellbound" is still fire. Favorites: Spellbound, Arabian Knights Would I listen to it again: Yes
i listened to this three times, this is incredible.
Oh. This is brilliant. So brilliant. I think I have heard a lot of these songs before without realising it was the banshees. It has clearly had a huge influence on lots of the bands I like and even the TV shows I watch that clear used the songs in their sound tracks. I will be putting this on again A lot.
Defining goth album for the decade and all time
I’ve been aware of Siouxsie Sioux for a while, and I’ve been meaning to give her a listen. What an excellent introduction this was. Eclectic, haunting, driving, melodic. The arrangements were inventive, the guitars/synths were dialed in to precise and interesting tones that really elevated the whole album. This is one I know I'll be coming back to. I listened to the first track three times before I was ready to move on from it. That's worth something!
Strong 5. I can't express how much I enjoyed this.
A classic, an old favorite. How Halloween isn’t a literal holiday staple everywhere (and not just in my own personal rotation) is beyond me.
I’m a sucker for a goat post punk album, and to no surprise these goths absolutely delivered. Siouxie’s voice is absolutely entrancing and the guitar work is some of the strangest and most transfixing I’ve ever heard. This album is also surprisingly ahead of its time, some of the instrumental remind me of alternative music that would come 30 years later. This album rules, it’s like if the B-52s were witches and they were hunting you through a dark London forest.
Holy guacamole
Classic goth album. Really good. Been a while since I've listened to it.
Yet another post-punk band I clearly should have listened to long before now. I'm halfway through a second listen and am completely hypnotized. Noisy post-punk is my favourite kind of post-punk and this album absolutely delivers on that front! I love the sharp, jagged guitars with the heavy flanging modulation! And the driving, pounding drums! Also, I feel a bit thick having not realized that Siouxsie Sioux is pronounced Susie Sue.
At last an album I love ! My type of music, really good will dive into more Siouxsie and the banshees
4.5/5 interesting and enjoyable
Siouxsie and the Banshees is, has been, and always will be among my favorites. What is not to love for one who favors post-punk, goth, club music? Even my hardest criticism, that a "whole album in the same voice" falls flat here with her VERY distinct voice featured the entire album. It is nearly shameful that I let this band slip off my radar. But than again, I am talking of a L o n g range of time and bands and styles and genres and everything else that I either sort of had not thought about or am still discovering, so ... Great Great Great re-discovery for me!
This is amazing. Again reminding me why post punk has been one of my favourite genres so far in my 1001 album journey. I feel like with a couple more listens to this I could really get into Siouxsie And The Banshees, which I already expected to like as I'm a fan of other artists that drew inspiration from them. Siouxsie's vocals in Juju are not just technically good, they're angsty, haunting, dark and powerful. There's something hypnotizing in the mix of Siouxsie's singing and the, at times, almost chaotic guitar. The guitar in this album has a huge impact too. For now I'm rating this a 4, but it could perfectly turn into a 5 with a re-listen. Edit: I'm relistening 4 months later, after really wanting to listen to Siouxsie and the Banshees again. I'm bumping the rating up to 5 now.
Its a 5 i love this album sk fucking mjch
Love this album
Another Siouxsie banger
Excellent. I listened twice back to back. Highlights for me was “monitor” and “into the light”
Very nice almost experimental sounding rock album. Loved the guitar work and especially the bass work, made it all sound complex but still in agreement . The vocals were also very dreamy and mixed well. 9/10, Favorite Song: Into The Light.
its siouxsie
Idk how i even existed before i heard this
4.5/5
Actually so fire pleased my ears
Gothy post-punk. A classic.
staggeringly beautiful. mcgeoch and siouxsie are locked in highly productive competition over who can be the most fearless artist, and each reach into such heights of shape and texture and color that its just a nonstop sensory parade. an unplaceable serenity covered my body during tracks like into the light and sin in my heart...truely Places You Can Go, to say nothing of the incredible tunefulness that always enhances the atmosphere. kind of makes u speechless. gotta hear way more of this band.
Great punk album, reminds me very much of the early 1980's punk rock bands.
YESSSSSS
Genuine gothic perfection
Great album. Spellbound and Arabian Nights were the highlights for me, but the whole thing was enjoyable
FODAAAA JUJUUUUU
This album has opened with a strong set of resonating songs for me. It drops off on the latter half, whereby the first handfuls are really good individual tracks. Vocals and instrumentals are held clear and precise, which is a refreshing contrast to today's music available. Favorite track: Into The Light. It also intruced me to a very good cover of Iggy Pop's The Passenger, which Siouxsie does bring out very well. Apparently there's even a 2024 made by both artists.
I understand completely how a whole genre of music spawned after this. It feels so fresh, and Siouxie's voice is perfect. The guitar has a haunting quality to it, and everything blends together well. It sounds "loose" but that is what makes it such a gem, to play at this level takes a certain level of restraint.
Pure brilliance
I listened to the shit out of this album as a teenager and for whatever reason, I moved on and kind of forgot about it. What a pleasure to experience it again with fresh ears, decades later! The first album to feature guitarist John McGeoch, this is the album sees the Banshees become more experimental and interesting. The rest of the band seem to jive together more strongly too. Juju is rightfully now considered a post-punk classic album. Listening to the album, it is easy to see the album's broad influence on music that would follow. Bands like the Smiths, The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead and many other have all cited this album as highly influential. I'm glad to have this album back on my radar and can't wait to introduce it to my teen daughter. She will eat this up!
I don't know what more needs to be said other than Siouxsie is a complete bad ass. I had forgotten about this record and getting this just prompted me to seek it out on vinyl
Legend for a reason.
J'aime beaucoup Siouxsie And The Banshees entre The Scream et Hyaena.
Goth girl source material. Easy 5. One of the best if not thee best of the genre.
The original run of albums from Siouxsie are all solid classics. Some of my absolute favorite music of all time on these albums. "Juju" is right there in the middle, packing it in with some of their most quintessential material. If someone wanted an entry point to Siouxsie And The Banshees, "Juju" could be the best option. Huge nod to guitarist John McGeoch. His work in this era of Siouxsie is incredible. When Johnny Marr cites you as a main influence, that's really all that needs to be said. Siouxsie claims John McGeoch was the best guitarist The Banshees ever played with. Listening to "Spellbound," it's easy to hear his brilliance.
Masterpiece. I had always focused on Siouxie's voice and McGeoch's guitar, both amazing, but today I was mostly caught by the rythm section, especially the wild percussions (those toms!)
A classic. Hard-charging rock driven by the genius of guitarist John McGeoch, accompanied by an able rhythm section of drummer Budgie and bassist Steven Severin. Every song has a dark edge to it: feelings of paranoia, dread, melancholy, uneasiness, all encapsulated by Siouxsie Sioux's tremulous, unsettling vocals. Siouxsie and the Banshees don't get anywhere near enough critical love. Whether you call this post-punk, art rock, gothic rock, or whatever, the sound is distinctive and has a place at the table of great rock albums.
(91/100)
Liked it!
Serei a defensora #1 de música alternativa pq minha mãe Hayley Williams me ensinou assim. Algumas intros e o instrumental de arabian nights me lembraram arctic monkeys, outras partes me lembram uns trampo solo da hayley.
Obra mestra absoluta.
Juju is an album that always entrances me by the time the intro of "Spellbound" hits. If I were to describe the album and how It makes me feel: Well to start off, the drums hypnotise the listener with a mesmerising tribal-like rhythm, the melodies are quite new wave-y that is accompanied with this darkness that forebodes the album, the lyrics are quite good (and disturbing) especially on "Arabian Knights" and "Night Shift and some songs are a bit of a call-back to - my favourite album of theirs - The Scream such as "Halloween" and "Monitor." Highlight Song/s: Spellbound, Into The Light, Arabian Knight and Night Shift
I'd never gotten into this album in depth before, at least not that I remember. I was a late convert to Siouxsie - probably from some teen movie soundtrack. Anyway, first 3 tracks are super solid but 'Sin In My Heart' speaks to me on another level - it's short but has this driving rage that I love (and obviously is heard throughout the album). The album slaps, as the kids say.
I’ve always loved Spellbound but never checked out anything else from this record. That was a mistake as this is a cracking post punk/goth album. Immediate re listen
Incredible album! I knew the name, but never heard any of the music and I was blown away. Perfect album to start Halloween week.
Wooow!!
Amazing album
Exceptional
Fantastic! Enjoyed this top to bottom, great post punk record. Look forward to hearing more of them
I loved this album. Excellent stuff. I don't think I've ever listened to this particular one before. I know I like some other stuff from Siouxsie and the Banshees, probably thanks to some Wes Anderson film.
10 I was not in the mood for siouxsie so was not that happy when I saw this was what I was listening to but it was so good! Listened to it twice again this weekend and will listen more my fave new album I’ve heard for a while
Incredible, you can hear their influence on so many later bands
odlično
Siouxsie and the Banshees are one of the best bands ever. I loved discovering the bass in Voodoo Dolly and enjoying Spellbound again. Although it's not my favorite Siouxsie and the Banshees album, it's still particularly good.
Great album! The quintessential goth release, I have already rated this on RYM as 4.5/5.0, so this could go either way here, but honestly it is deserving 5 stars I think, great vibes
My mom introduced me to Siouxsie And The Banshees in the early 80s with Once Upon A Time: The Singles. It contained "Spellbound" and "Arabian Nights," which I have loved since. Upon listening to Juju in its entirety, I also came to love "Monitor" and "Night Shift." The rest of the album is swanky goth atmosphere thanks, in large part, to the guitar work of John McGeoch. My only complaint about the album is that it does not include "Israel," then I would give it six stars. Incidentally, I maintain that one of Robert Smith's biggest influences as a guitar player is John McGeoch. Ol' Bob replaced McGeoch as a Banshee, recording Hyaena in 1984 and playing McGeoch's parts live. After his full-time return to The Cure, you see much more varied guitar work. As an example, "The Blood" sounds like it could have its roots in "Arabian Nights."
Peak totaleeeee
Excellent! Surprised I didn’t dig into this band before! Dark, post-punk… a gem for me!
BOM
I absolutely loved this. I think what made me love it more was that it is one of the first albums (aside from Jazz ones) where I didn't know the music and still loved it. I knew the hits but not the album. I really enjoyed the vocals and thumpy bits.
WOW WOW WOW This has creeped and crawled right under my skin. The songs are stuck in my head like bats in the daytime All the songs are brilliantly arranged and sounding incredible. You can hear, taste and feel the anger and urgency in this. A fantastic discovery, and I'm glad to be ending the week with this marvel.
Het just nu.
There should be more Banshees on this list!!
Great ensemble album, with the interplay between the band contributing to an incredible final product.
This album is the reason why I even got into this 1001 album a day challenge because it exposes me to different artists and genres. I absolutely adored this album and I found myself replaying certain tracks like "Spellbound", "Arabian Knights" and "Sin in my Heart" over and over again. I had no idea who Siouxsie and the banshees were before I listened to this but I am really glad that this challenge made me listen to them. Definitely one of the best albums I have heard so far.
Cleaned the kitchen to this
right up my alley
amazing vocals, extremely cohesive backing tracks, what else is there to love?
Fantastic album! Even greater that their first records. I haven't listened so fresh and great stuff in a long time.
I remember listening to a little bit of Siouxsie and the Banshees a year or so ago and thinking it was utter trash. Now, I think this is peak. WTF happened a year ago??? This is sick!!
Pretty close to a perfect album. I love it.
This album is incredible. The musicality, the sound, the singing. It feels like the progenitor to a lot of groups in the 80's but also feels like a huge influence to things today while sounding like something wholly unique still. This is easily 8.5- 9.0 as a record.
Really good album, constant upbeat throughout
Undebatable 5/5, Siouxsie and the banshees will ALWAYS be THAT band. Svaka pjesma, ali svaka je odlična. No, as always istakle su se najviše “Fireworks”, ”Into the Light” i “Monitor”
I will not include the 2006 reissue bonus tracks for this review. After enjoying Siouxsie and the Banshees' debut, The Scream, I figured I would get more of a kick out of a later release of theirs. After all, I already love opening single "Spellbound", which made a recent appearance in the fourth season of Stranger Things and was sampled this year in Lady Gaga's "Abracadabra". Plus, I've heard deep cut "Monitor" before on the radio, and dug that track as well. How does the rest of Juju stack up? I would say that this album can be distilled into one word, and that's "hypnotic". Not only are all the great elements of the band's early raw work still present in the sound, with Siouxsie Sioux's vibrato, John McKay's crunchy riffs, Kenny Morris's tom-tom-focused percussive beats, and Steven Severin's supple bass, but the songwriting has greatly improved to incorporate tighter melodic compositions. Not a moment felt wasted as the band effortlessly played with dark twists and turns, yet maintaining some pop sensibilities. Combine that with a myriad of subject matter ranging from meditations on death, domestic abuse, serial killers, and perverted magic, and the result is a classic goth record. I can see why Juju is considered a fan favorite in the band's discography. It was well worth checking out.
Treasure of new wave and post punk.
Ochentoso pero psicodelico. Muy bue
Siouxsie’s sharp, controlled vocals and those prominent drums create the feel of a mystical war ritual. There are some killer guitar moments too (a reason forInto the Light being my favorite on Juju). That intense sound never lets up. It doesn’t offer much variety, but it builds an immersive mood perfectly. The lyrics range from witchy to horrifying (Head Cut, what the hell?) to clumsy social commentary, yet they fit the sound brilliantly. Coming from just knowing The Cure in goth rock, Siouxsie and the Banshees were a revelation. And with so few women on that 1001 Albums list, this was exactly the kind of discovery I’m here for.
purchased immediately. great
What an album. Dark and hard. Guitar riffs were incredible. Favorite find so far from this project
JuJu is one of those albums that I've heard all the songs on it but never listened to the album itself. Over all my years I would accumulate mix tapes and then sadly mix cds and in hundred and thousands of those some how my friends, lovers, and other people had given me this album but in the best way possible song by song over 30+ years.
i love you siouxsie
Juju is a dark, hypnotic ride where every track is a killer with no filler, just pure post-punk magic.
One of those albums where I wish I had been listening to it all my life and not just the last six years. Truly in my top 10 of all time.
Every song left me soaked in eargasmic juices. By Voodoo Dolly the euphoria had reached levels not experienced since Fun House. What juju is this, and where can I get more?
One of my favorite albums, I love Siouxsie so much she’s just the coolest ever!! <3
Absolutely superb. It gets your attention with the brilliant opener Spellbound and doesn't really deviate away from brilliance throughout.
Like
A spooky post-punk masterpiece that’s way funkier than it’s generally given credit for being.
Really hard to rank their albums. John McGeoch is one of my favorite guitarists ever and this is some of his best work. The album could've had a stronger ending but that's about my only flaw. Rating: 4.7
Didn't know anything about this so it was an awesome surprise. 5 stars for the insanely outstanding bass and guitar throughout this album.
This was my first listen to Siouxsie and the Banshees, and I can't believe what I was missing. This album is so ahead of its time and it rules. The guitar on every single track is powerful, unique, and innovative. You can feel it at the heart of what came after: The Smiths, R.E.M., Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. "Monitor" especially stands out with a riff that is a decade too early. Siouxsie's vocals sail over everything and can't be tamed. This just makes me want to be a teenager in 1981 and put on my headphones and my eyeliner and forget how much Reaganism sucks.
Just listened to this the other day and it has stood up to the test of time
Cool album. Would listen again.
heard this many times before Spellbound - 5/5 Into The Light - 4/5 Arabian Knights - 5/5 Halloween - 4/5 Monitor - 5/5 Night Shift - 5/5 Sin In My Heart - 4/5 Head Cut - 4/5 Voodoo Dolly - 3/5 (too long for my liking) Average score: 4.3/5 (rounding up) it's damn good, what else can i say? this is essential goth rock listening. since i can't give this a 4.5 star rating, i guess i have no choice but to give it 5
10/10 Many good tracks. Spellbound is an amazing song. The rhythm is driving and it never fails to give me chills. after listening I bought the album, I had no idea how much of this album I loved 7-1-2025
I’m going to do something very unusual and give an album five stars after a first listen. Being a big fan of The Cure, I should be partial to their “sister band,” but never found a way in. Well, this album might be it! I loved it! The last tracks are more album tracks, but the enthusiasm built up from side one carried me through. I even learnt some of the riffs on guitar. Goth-tastic!
Weird in a good way
Original, interesting, captivating, driven, unique, immersive. Sounds like if The Pretenders met The B52s and tripped on DXM. I fuck like that, so it's an easy 5 for me.
This is fire. I love it. I never listened at the time and it’s my loss. Siouxsie’s vocals, the guitars, the driving beats, the echo-y production, just great.
Good energy, good vibes. It was hard for me to find fault with this album. Lots of good harmonies and fun uses of dissonance. I don't have a lot of experience with the gothic rock genre, but this was fantastic. Favorite tracks: Spellbound, Monitor
Whoa really liked this..good timing given my recent nu-goth phase. Thought the 1st 3 songs were good, but the run from Halloween through Head Cut was epic - the drums (from The Slits!) crashed harder, the guitar slashing around like Death's scythe. Monitor (especially) and Head Cut the pick of the bunch, musically and lyrically. Had me throwing shapes in my living room a la Jenny Ortega's Wednesday Adams, so have to go full marks here...
One of my go to albums for a bit of Goth post punk. Juju is one of their best albums. Its got wo great singles and the beast that is 'Monitor', what a song. Not a bad track on this.
Knallbra skive! Passer bra til sparkling av gipsplater.
5/5 for me. Loved it.
Instant 5 for queen Siouxsie, “Arabian Nights” to “Halloween” to “Monitor” is a perfect trio
First time hearing this album, but I can honestly say that this is a post-punk classic. High energy and depressing sounding at the same time. The guitar playing is great and at moment genius, even though it's not very technically proficient. Souxie is, I have to say, a bad singer.. BUT, luckily this is a post-punk album and vocal proficiency doesn't have to be top notch so it works perfectly. I'll be definitely returning to this album and the song Monitor is going into my playlists. 5/5
This album is so good!!! Witchy punky gothy, and finally, another female led band
Never heard this before except 'Spellbound', which I've always liked, but I thought it was amazing from start to finish. Sounds a lot like The Cure, but with enough vocal disticintion to make it sound like an equal, not a copy. Loved it.
I love this record. I’ve loved this record for a long time. It’s one of those essential post-punk albums that really defined the genre. Dark, moody, all enveloping music that has such a distinct feeling. This is sort of the peak of John McGeochs short tenure with the band, but his guitar playing really took them to the next level. It should be noted that this album was expertly produced by Nigel Gray, who also produced the first three albums by the Police. This is one of those albums that I don’t listen to often, but every so often I remember just how great Siouxsie and the Banshees really were. 5*
Original, atmospheric, goth!
4.5, rounded down
Loved it! Spellbound was my Favourite
What the capital f !?? I loooooved this álbum Tha guitar's solos and the drums The voice of this woman, i really enjoy it. Thanks.
i LOVED this album, oh my god!! its something i would definitely listen every other day; it has rock but its not too cliché, as well as cool new sounds, plus i loved the singer's voice. my favorite album so far. the songs i enjoyed the most were Spellbound, Halloween and Monitor. dare i say i might have discovered a new band for me....?
Juju is a masterclass in tightly wound tension and dynamic post-punk songwriting, where atmosphere and precision collide in stunning fashion. The album opens with Spellbound, which immediately sets the tone with Budgie’s frantic tom-heavy drumming driving the track like a heartbeat in panic, while John McGeoch’s guitar is the real scene-stealer. He slices through the rhythm with chiming arpeggios and angular riffs that feel both melodic and aggressive. Siouxsie Sioux’s vocals rise over it all like an incantation, measured and hypnotic, then veering into near-mania at just the right moments. What stands out structurally throughout Juju is how meticulously arranged each track is. The band balances repetition and contrast brilliantly, especially on Arabian Knights, where Middle Eastern-inspired modal guitar lines wind over a taut, circular bassline. The vocals dance between seductive and scathing, and the guitar work refuses to settle into anything predictable. McGeoch often abandons traditional solos in favour of cascading motifs and eerie textures. The rhythm section is mechanical yet expressive, underpinning songs with an almost krautrock-like insistence while still allowing moments of eruption and drama. Then there’s Night Shift, one of the most disturbing and beautifully crafted tracks of their catalogue. It creeps in with ghostly harmonics and slow-building tension, building on drones and a sparse bassline until it erupts in bursts of discord and release. Siouxsie’s delivery here is haunting, edging into theatrical horror without tipping into parody. Across the entire album, there's a remarkable control of dynamic range. Quiet passages feel ominous, not restful, and loud moments hit with full weight. Juju isn’t just stylish goth rock. It’s architecturally sound, emotionally raw, and musically fearless. An absolute peak in their discography and the genre at large.
First time with this album and I can easily how influential this was and still is. Here is a band that had really figured out their sound.
Brilliant album, I’ll be keeping this in my regular rotation for a while
Solid album all the way through. Where goth and post-punk meet with Siouxsie’s ethereal voice. I was thrilled to see this one pop up!
Loved this album. Siouxsie at her best.
This rocks. I'm totally spellbound.
RYM: 5.0 | AOTY: 98 | Favorite Track: Spellbound —————— Juju is easily my favorite gothic rock album. The album kicks off with my favorite track "Spellbound" which just a perfect opener for a darkly psychedelic record. Siouxsie Sioux's vocal delivery throughout is beautifully haunting while still bringing that punk energy, especially on tracks like "Monitor". The guitar work from John McGeoch may be some of my favorite on any album — swirling and hypnotic. It pairs perfectly with Budgie's driving tribal drumming creating this really mesmerizing sound. What really stands out to me is just the flow of the album. Each track moves into the next almost seamlessly, especially the three track run of "Arabian Knights", "Halloween", and "Monitor". The only track that loses me just a little is the closer "Voodoo Dolly", but not enough to prevent me from giving this a perfect score. For me, Juju represents gothic rock at its peak and one I regularly bring out to spin.
if you're this cool you can dress as goth as you want and I won't make fun of you promise
I mean it's Siouxsie and The MF Banshees. Definitely a vibe, I like "Spellbound" and "Arabian Nights". I like their voices, I like the lyrics, I like the overall vibes. They are just a fun, cool band.
witches never age
This is one of those albums that transcends genre. Yeah it’s goth rock or whatever but any other rock genre can pull influence from this.
I really like this album. I know Siouxsie Sioux's look- I mean, it's iconic for the 80s- but I never took the chance to actually listen to the music behind the icon. It's thoughtful without being annoying, the lyrics and melodies are enjoyable, and it's not stuck sonically in the decade it was made (I prefer that and particularly for the 80's for some reason, because sometimes this decade can be PAINFULLY from it's time more than other eras).
Very good
Of all the bands that emerged from the UK pink scene of 1976-77, Siouxsie and the Banshees led the way to a posk-punk kind of music. This album is an absolute masterpiece of post-punk soundscapes, featuring the classic line-up with Budgie on drums and the great John McGeoch (ex-Magazine) on guitar. Absolutely great stuff with a psychedelic sheen to it.
This shit fucks
Everyone should listen to more Siouxsie. She is an absolute force of nature, and never moreso than she is here.
Second Siouxie album, second banger. Gothic and spooky, this has an eerie vibe throughout, ending with an absolute rocking song in Voodoo Dolly. By the middle of the track, the blood is pumping full of anxiety and it is a lot of fun. Siouxie kills it throughout this album and is a great vocal lead. The whole album is awesome, with some of my other favorites at Spellbound, Monitor, and Head Cut. Loved it, will probably be back.
Some may argue that there were goth bands in the 1960s, but Juju undoubtedly set a standard for the post-punk and goth genres that would flourish and evolve in the 1970s and 1980s. The beauty of Siouxsie Sioux’s voice completely camouflages the darkness, feelings of loss and regret, domination and control over others, and lack of psychological control and safety. The threats and uncertainty the lyrics bring are only magnified by the driving instruments, which build with angst and tension through each song and throughout the album. I became familiar with Siouxsie and the Banshees through their early 90s album Superstition, which I would almost consider a dance album in the world music genre. Juju has presented an exciting and dark new perspective that has encouraged me to revisit their earlier catalog.
Treat to the ears.
I was once criticised for playing bass like a lobotomised Peter Hook. This was inaccurate. I was playing bass like a lobotomised Steve Severin. I think he is so underrated.
Dark. Energetic. Fantastic performances and songs. What a voice!
Great punk vibes. Good grunge feel way ahead of its time. Listened to it twice back to back.
nice vibes, voodoo
Really enjoyed this. Doesn’t sound like an album from 1981.
Kind of like an alternative rock. Really liked this one musically.
Love it! True rocker chick. And I mean that with the utmost respect.
Obviously, has some of my favourite Siouxsie songs on it (like Arabian Knights) and I think my parents have played this to me before. I really liked Monitor, it had the grunginess that I like in my favourite of their songs. So is Head Cut. I tend to enjoy the punkier songs on the album. It's a very classic goth album, and although sometimes songs are repetitive, it's good. I like it.
10/10
This was the album that introduced me to Goth Rock. The album that showed me that those weirdos with makeup and messy hair had feelings too. Spellbound is one of the hardest songs I've ever played on guitar... damn.
This was a voyage into a goth-punk underworld. And I loved it. The guitar is anxious and strident, the sonic atmosphere is hypnotic, and the raw, female vocals are epic. The lyrics are doomy and hard, contributing to the overall story of the album but without being so explicitly on-the-nose. Cryptic, poetic, violent, punk as fuck. Girl bands ROCK. Best tracks: Monitor, Into the Light, Spellbound Least favorite: Voodoo Dolly
Hell yeah Siouxsie Sioux is awesome. Need to listen to more of her. 9/10
This is fantastic. Both goth and rock and pop. Something for everyone.
Great album. One of the best I've had on here so far.
This. Godlike. Siouxsie And The Banshees is one band that highly influenced me when I was young, they're probably one of my fav among those OG goth bands. I can't tell you how much they shaped alternative(goth) rock and post-punk. I love and respect this album. 5/5.
Großartig. Tolle Musik.
Honestly, Siouxsie and the Banshees' output has always been a mixed bag for me. I love their Bauhaus and Cure-esque goth output, but their more new wave stuff doesn't always hit me the same way (though still good). Juju is a beautiful album that hits in all the right spots for me, from Siouxsie's vocals, which are as good as ever on this album, to me. And the music gives me goosebumps. Incredible album that deserves to be listed in the top bracket of any 80's Goth list (and arguably, 80's music, in general).
incredible, atmospheric, haunting, dizzying, energetic, beautiful. peak goth culture when 1001 Albums Generator assigned me The Scream a few weeks ago, i found it charming how 'green' yet filled with potential the band's music felt to me, so i found it very rewarding to get to listen to a more experienced, unique, confident version of the Banshees music is a thing we all find when we're meant to, yet that can't stop me from beating myself up for not giving Siouxsie more of my time sooner
I love it. I haven't felt like listening to music lately but I wasn't going to leave Siouxsie as DNL. I needed her today.
Dark, threatening, enveloping. Spellbound by a rag doll dance. A beautiful severed head, can I take it back to the flat with me? I heard a rumour, what have you done to her? Some of the guitar on this album is mind-blowing. Like, what the hell is going on in Into the Light? Insane. I've never heard guitar like this before. The lyrics in Arabian Knights are problematic, plain and simple. But this is an album that bathes in ugly imagery and shock value. And this is an album that's over 40 years old. I don't know what else to say. This album is magnetic and it's something that I'll come back to. Or more likely, it will come to me as I sleep. Fav tracks: Spellbound, Into the Light, Monitor, Sin in My Heart, Head Cut
Absolutely loved this one. I'm so glad that the 1001 albums project introduced me to these guys.
forever hard to explain how this is the Best Album Ever Made for 7 tracks before it devolves into being merely amazing...still clears everything else on this journey so far and it's like the 6th best Siouxsie 10/10
A seminal Post-punk/ Goth album that still holds up today. Every track has its own unique flow and nothing here is filler. Standouts: Spellbound, Into The Light, Monitor.
An absolute masterpiece, if more bands produced this quality of music I would never get bored.
Great album
Gaat kanonhard
One of my favourite discoveries from this list so far. Fantastic blend of dark, intense post-punk and catchy alternative rock, bringing out the best of both worlds. Every song has its own unique sound and a non-stop drive.
Incredible stuff
Brilliant album and one that first got me into goth music.
Almost instantly thought this would be a 4 start album, but as it progressed it definitely crossed over to 5 stars. It impeccably captures a post-punk 80s vibe, and has some phenomenal guitar work. ”Spellbound” is a phenomenal opener and summarizes the highlights of the album, but there are so many great tracks to revisit.
Ughhh college me would have ate this shit up, like what was I even doing with my life. I mean I'm loving it now, I just remember her and how this would have been the perfect soundtrack for where she was at the time. I've always wanted to actually listen to one of their albums, and this is just more positive reinforcement for why I'm doing this project. I've listened several times already, and my favorite song changes each time. Her vocalizations are spine tingling. This is an easy 5 stars, but another time I wish this were out of 10. Because this 5 doesn't hold as much weight as the one I'll be giving Abbey Road or something like that, but it's certainly one of my favorite discoveries so far.
We need more amazing, strong and talented women and fewer misogynistic, superficial and talentless knobends. On this list and in life.
Goth
I knew Peekaboo, but never heard anything else by them. I definitely missed out - this album rocks and you can hear how it influenced a lot of 1980s (and later) alternative rock. The only track I could have done without was Voodoo Dolly - a very weird way to end such a cool album, but didn't detract enough for me to deduct a point. The rest of the album is just plain awesome - layers of dark coolness overlaid with Siouxsie's unique, powerful voice. Favorite tracks: Spellbound, Arabian Knights, Monitor, Night Shift.
siouxsieeeeeeee <333333
A haunting and fascinating album, even if it doesn't all live up to the high point that is "Spellbound." Overall a very captivating piece, though.
This album is fantastic. I have played it 3 times in a row very early on a Saturday morning making this a great start to the weekend. There are some great tunes like Arabian nights and Monitor. Favourite song: Monitor Least favourite: All great tunes. Album artwork: Great cover, I have no idea what is going on with it.
Awesome album, feel like I’ve heard of Siouxie Sioux but not sure if I had heard any of her music.. I’m a bit of a sucker for a female lead with a punk or metal sound, so this was great. 4.5/5
I've been aware of the band for a long time, but had never bothered to listen to an album of theirs. That was a mistake as this is fire.
What a badass album! I don't know what this dude did to his guitar, but the sounds he has coming out of it are insanely cool and unique and are a highlight of every track. And Siouxsie's vocals are arresting, haunting and beautiful. I can't look away. Combine the two, along with those steady driving basslines, and I can listen all day (just played it through twice). Although I'd heard of the band before, this is my first listen. And it looks like I have a new discography to explore. Fave tracks: Arabian Nights, Monitor, Into the Light, Spellbound 4.5/5.0
The youth may think Stevie Nicks is witchy, but little do they know about the dark magic and gothic spells of Siouxsie, rock's best Susan. This album sounds like a decomissioned barbed wire factory cursed for being built on a druidic ceremonial site and haunted by centuries of ghouls.
McGeoch's fantastic guitar work, Budgie's relentless, frantic drumming and Siouxsie Sioux haunting powerful vocals come together perfectly on this album. Well not a perfect album It's probably my favorite Banshees album.
I liked this one a lot. The powerful drums, interesting guitar work, and really good vocals work with the gothic/punk esthetic quite well. Really great stuff here.
When you don't think guitar genius can come in a package other than 80s spandex, whammy bars, and ripping solos (but to be clear - they really do. or did.) this is a great counter-point. Man I love this album - I like it so much more than their debut for many reasons: Siouxsie's vocals are far more assured, the guitar work from John McGeoch is absolutely fantastic and unique. Most of all this album has way better songs than they'd written in the past. Is this goth? Is it post-punk? Just art rock? Who gives a shit - it's not for everyone but it's weird, it's jarring, it's anxious and paranoid and it's great. Faves: "Spellbound" "Into the Light" "Halloween" TL;DR: This album makes me want to go back to my youth and trade in all my baseball shirts and jeans for black eyeliner and hoodies. 9/10 5 stars.
The opening guitar riff had me hooked. I loved this album and was pleasantly surprised because I have never heard of this band.
a hypnotising album full of unsettling lyrics and dark guitars. I can't believe it came out in 1981 when I was in school and into punky new wave stuff - it must have passed me by. If I'd heard it then I don't know where I'd be. I was aware of the singles such as Spellbound and Arabian Knights but other tracks such as Monitor and Night Shift draw you in to a world of darkness and mortuaries.
Fabulous
A landmark album. Hugely influential on a wide varieties of genres, including post-punk, synth pop, indie rock and (whether they like it not) especially goth rock. There's some very interesting guitar work and experimentation. This album fits equally well into the art rock and pop worlds. It's dark, brooding, and infectiously upbearr. There's not a single boring track and I could listen to the entire thing on repeat. I only really one have criticism. Siouxsie and the Banshees have always walked a bit too close to cultural appropriation line for me. There's nothing wrong with paying homage to African music but there's something uncomfortable about just titling an album 'Juju' and slapping an African mask on the cover. Especially from a band that's made some other questionable decisions. This kind of stuff hasn't aged too well. Their music, on the other hand, certainly has. I really love this album, that one point aside.
Well, this is perfect timing because I picked up a first pressing of this album on vinyl last weekend. This album is so good. It's crazy to think this came out in 1981, because so much of it still sounds fresh. Monitor and Night Shift could have been on the radio in the 2000s (think Tool or System of a Down). And Spellbound should absolutely have a rebirth a la Kate Bush during the 80s nostalgia moment. Everything about this iteration of the band is fantastic. Siouxsie's voice is incredible, Budgie's drums are relentless (along with Severin's bass). And as much as I love Robert Smith, there's no question that John McGeoch was the best guitarist the Banshees ever had. His guitar lines are iconic. This band was so hugely influential — to post punk, to goth, to women in rock, to fashion, and to my favorite band, The Cure. If I had to say one negative thing about this album it's that the lyrics to Arabian Knights are pretty racist through a modern lens (to be fair, so is the band's name). There's a way to criticize misogyny in the Middle East without equating all the men to baby rapists and goat fuckers. But, I imagine for a woman who wore a Nazi armband ironically, being abrasive is the point. And (to my knowledge), Siouxsie hasn't gone off the xenophobic deep end in recent years like her idol Johnny Lydon, so she's got that going for her, I guess. 5/5
Perfect for a morning run
A haunting, more Halloween-esque take on post-punk, which may seem like an obvious connection to some, but boy does this album go the extra mile to make it feel like Halloween night. You've got the upbeat costume party songs, the haunted house tracks, and you've got songs that just genuinely make you tense up, like walking home alone at night. However, the album isn't droning, instead still having those energetic drum and bass (not the genre) pick-ups to get you still grooving despite the unease, and Siouxie Sioux's vocals are just unique, especially since having a female vocalist is oddly rare in the genre, at least when discussing the big players, so for her to stand toe-to-toe with the best of them is not only impressive, it's a critical achievement. Pull it all together with tight songwriting, and a relatively quick album, and it's not hard to see why they're considered one of the heavy hitters of the genre. Spooky yet catchy is starting to become one of my favorite things an album can be, and this is a subtle yet impactful banger. Now please put it back on streaming!
I tend not to enjoy female vocals and Siouxsie and the Banshees never really clicked with me. Apart from this album of course, which I already know well and love enough to give a 5 star rating straight out of the gates. There's nothing to fault here, the guitars and drums are incredible and the vocals fit the music well. Spellbound is a fantastic track and Arabian Nights is another of my favourites. Having both near the start of the album kicks everything off so well.
Spellbound is such a wonderful song, shines out in an overall good album, but that is the star.
As an old goth I am contractually obliged to give this 5 stars
This was all new to me. I really enjoyed the sound of this album. Into the Light, Night Shift and Monitor were some favorites. The tracks have a dream like quality, and would fit right into a David Lynch film. Head Cut was my least favorite track.
Great goth grooves
Listen to her voice. This is quintessential 80s punk/Goth music. The guitar sound, the bass fills and the drum beat all work perfectly to bring you to another place.
Spellbound is such a great opening track. Love her voice, the performances, the tone. Album was well structured and well paced and consistently intense.
no notes. a pinnacle of the genre. where my clove cigs at
I'd known the singles it was nice to finally hear the rest of the album. I quite enjoyed it
