Reviews (page 4 of 11)
Absolutely wonderful. Brilliant voice
The gothic instrumentation contrasts wonderfully with Siouxsie's vocals which makes a wonderful record
Thought this album was a fun, rocky vibe that I’d put in the same category as the Cranberries and the Sundays, maybe just a bit heavier. I wasn’t really in the mood for lots of drums when I listened to it, so think I’ll give it a second listen when I’m ready for something more rocky.
I was aware of this band but had never really listened to them. I found this album quite enjoyable and am sure repeat listens are warranted.
I wish I could give this album 4.5 stars. It is soooo good. Never heard this artist before, but I’m a big fan and will be listening to them more!
Very fun, I enjoyed this album
Love the basslines
pretty good but not too many stand outs liked the album as a whole tho
Very cool
Really enjoyed this. My favourite song was Into The Light, and I definitely need to listen to the other albums as well.
Never heard of 'em before but I really liked the album. I like that it's a kind of concept album. Music is good, and I'll definitely revisit this one some time in the future. Great recommendation. 8 / 10
Loved it!
Such a wild and crazy album! Loving it, especially the album cover which left a deep impression right at the first time I saw it
This reminded me of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs whom I love. Really cool drums rhythms and the energy works for me.
Gothic rock was beginning to take the UK by storm at the turn of the 1980s, and amidst all the moody males moping it up with teased black hair, eyeliner and dark themes, Siouxsie Sioux was pivotal in helping females embrace their bleaker side. Initially gaining appeal as a member of the Bromley Contingent, a dedicated group of eccentric teens devoted to the Sex Pistols, Sioux and Steven Severin eventually formed Siouxsie and the Banshees in 1976, and by 1980, they were poster children for the emerging goth movement, with Siouxsie's fashion style and their 1981 record, 'Juju', lumping them in with fellow contemporaries The Cure, Bauhaus, The Damned, Echo and the Bunnymen and The Birthday Party. 'Juju' is a consistent, driving record that, not unlike The Damned, presents the sound of a punk band who has darkened their sound with spookier lyrics and chorus-laden guitars. Sioux's spooky croon dominates the record, commanding plenty of attention and intrigue. In a very male-dominated goth scene, Sioux's groundbreaking vocals and presence helped women feel at home in the scene and how they, too, could embrace the goth scene, not unlike Evanescence's Amy Lee and the band Kittie with the n̈u metal scene 20 years later. 'Juju' is one of the cornerstone albums of gothic rock, and cemented Siouxsie Sioux as a key pioneer of the genre. Best songs: Spellbound, Into the Light, Arabian Knights, Halloween, Night Shift
Loved this album! Female version of the cure but more punk rock. Monitor was my favorite song
i like the whimsical vibes of this one, very nice chill and vibe music
Ļoti skaista, spēcīga balss. Man ļoti patīk dziesmas sākumi!! Interesting songs..espc "Vodoo Dolly" but nice
I enjoyed this and found myself tapping my fingers and feet throughout. It does get a bit samey, though, and the last track kinda loses its way, so I don't know that it quite deserves the coveted 5, but it's still good and SO much better than most of the junk on this list.
Loved this. Not really something I will go for all the time, but was a fun one to listen to.
Good but not my favourite genre
Goth. I have played Spellbound to death and there were one or two tracks I was less into, but I still think a low 4. There were some new to me tracks that really got me. It does what it sets out to very well. Atmosphere.
Coldplay left me well, cold
I haven't listened to this album before, but I have listened to plenty of albums that have released since it came out that sound a lot like it, so I suppose that goes to show how influential it was, especially in the post-punk genre. I really love the guitars on this album. A lot of moody, ear-worm riffs from guitarist John McGeoch on tracks like Monitor and Sin In My Heart. Monitor in particular is the highlight of the album in my eyes. Right from the very first note it grabs you by the throat and demands your full attention. Sit back and enjoy the real McCoy indeed. It's somehow groovy and oppressive in equal measure. It feels massively ahead of its time, but then again so does a lot of this album. Siouxsie's vocals are a little one-note on this record, but at the same time they've very effective at setting the tone of the album: haunting and impactful. It wouldn't be half the album it is with anyone else. She really is one of the iconic voices of this genre. I was almost tempted to give this a 5, but there are a couple of dud tracks that I didn't really care for at all in Night Shift and Voodoo Dolly. So that's why it's a 4.5 (rounded down) from me. Favourite tracks: Monitor, Spellbound, Into The Light
Love Spellbound. Voice is uniquely Siouxsie.
honestly kind of loved this
Great post-punk, spooky new wave. Every song was interesting and catchy. Great album.
Really solid goth rock, first track is by far the best
This was fun. A little different, but enjoyable.
Spellbound is a great wat to start the morning. If Peter Murphy is the Gothfather, Siouxsie has to be the Gothmother. Great musicality dripping with ambiance.
I mean, here’s where it all started.
I hear so much of this band in everything else I love listening to. Especially Pixies.
For such an important artist to the development of genres I generally like I'm surprised I haven't listened to that much Siouxsie, and I thought this one is excellent. Not sure if you'd call her the Godmother of Goth (maybe that's not an original name) but the spooky vibes are really dialed up and I'm here for it. A whole ode to a severed head?? Sign me up. Instrumentally it's super solid, both uptempo and midtempo tracks are propulsive largely due to the drumming and the fantastic guitar work. Will definitely listen to more of this.
I liked it
Very nive
My previous album was the Sex Pistols "Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols". And while that album got a 4 due to cultural significance, this one gets a four on just being really good. I hadn't listened to much Siouxsie And the Banshees before, though I've heard of them, but this was excellent early punk with some variety in sound.
Cool. Hypnotic. I don’t think I’m done with this one.
Probably ought to say something about these guys knowing how to wail.
Thought is was really interesting at times. Another solid 4/5 album that didn't make me fall in love with it, but was nice to listen top.
great album not quite what i was expecting but please with what it was. popular songs on the album are definitely popular for a reason. need to listen again while not busy to properly enjoy it.
Definitely a product of its time that starts strongly (the singles are the standout, as you'd expect), the album loses steam towards the end but is still a good listen.
Pretty good stuff in here. Good driving sound and they make good use of Siouxsie's range. Great guitar throughout. Into the Light and Monitor are bangers.
Great album. Just gets better with time.
Always have time for a S&TB record.
129/1089 one song in and i’m cautiously optimistic that this is post punk made for me. Love Siouxsie’s voice and the strummy guitar This was a great project, not a single miss for me. The feel and sound etc was all very well executed and i’ll def be returning to this one. Something *just* held it back from 5 stars for now, not sure what but i could see it growing with more listens faves: Spellbound, Into The Light, Fireworks, Monitor, Sin In My Heart 79/100
Moody and atmospheric, great vocals and some great guitar parts.
Oh man, this album's got so much character. The guitar work was so engaging, and Siouxsie's voice... such a contrast with the previous album, and boy it benefits. Highlights: Spellbound, Into the Light.
Hear echoes of this sound all over. Incredible vocals and great listen
Chans ned?
Gibe mal 4 enjoyable puntitos
This, to me, is what many people say Patti Smith's "Horses" is supposed to be. Weirdly, I first encountered Siouxsie via her first and so far only solo album, Mantaray, which is quite a different affair from this one. I really like both for how she seems to be doing her thing, and I truly enjoy both Siouxsie incarnations.
Another band that was around when I was a deep music listener but never got to hear when I was young. I’ve had the chance to finally listen to so much great music from this era it really makes me realize that I was born just a few years too late as I’m sure I would have been able to hear all this great music if I was in college rather than elementary or high school. I’ve been wanting to dig into their catalogue for a while now so it’s great to finally start with this album. I’m definitely digging this! Such a unique sound! Her vocals are great and that flanged and chorusy guitar, although a bit thin sounding, is doing some very unique things on top of a great sounding rhythm section. Even though I don’t know much about their music I did get to see them live once when they were direct support to Jane’s Addiction on the first Lollapalooza tour in 1991! Damn that would have been great to experience with more knowledge of their music. Definitely looking forward to digging into the rest of their catalogue.
Really awesome!
undeniably very cool and very good for what it is. i was always very scared of siouxie as a kid
Talvez a floresta seja a nossa própria sombra. Você quer conhecê-la?
If I were born in 1965 Britain like my spiritual mother who shall not be named, this would probably be my favorite band. I really like a couple of these songs like spellbound and monitor (especially), but as a whole a little too dated to go all in.
First time hearing about Mceough and his influence. Arabian Knights is pretty good. Awesome bass line.
Rad.
TBD
What a great gothic/post-punk album. Dark, hypnotic bass lines and moody, echoey vocals throughout. Monitor really was the song to hook me. Almost sounded like a Gang of Four song with its ultra angular lead guitar. Going to enjoy re-listening to this one.
Definitely a side A type of record. I loved side A of this album. A very good album and set the tone for lot of goth electronic music.
This is really hecking good
When I saw Siouxsie spelled that way I was fully prepared to hate this. But goddamn if they didn't turn me around almost immediately. Most of this album hits hard and doesn't relent until it gets closer to the end. That said, Voodoo Dolly is a strong finish to a pretty good album.
Pretty cool
Big fan of this album. Very punchy which does make it an heavier listen. I enjoy that however and I love the heavy bass tone that features throughout. Spellbound is a very strong start to any album. Other standouts include Halloween and Monitor.
Will listen again
Wow , pretty impressed. Jangley Peter Buck chords, but also tinge of the pretenders. A very reasonable and enjoyable experience.
Why haven't I listened to this before? Can really hear how this is such an influential band even now.
Punchy and moody punk love it. Almost gives teen Jesus and the jean teasers vibes but 50 years early. Finally good ot hear female vocals . Firm 4 could be a 5 with at least one hit
Very nice! Need to add this to my Halloween playlist. 3.5.
I now know what an EBow is. Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5
I don't really like other Siouxsie stuff, but this one is interesting and even good in a lot of points.
great one, never heard this kind of rock and I think that's a nice first album for me
First time hearing the band and absolutely blown away, fantastic energy and great pulsing driving rhythms!
Wasn't interested in this at all, but I'm really liking it. She's got a great voice, the guitars and rhythms are driving. I could see myself listening to this again or checking out more of their music.
Really enjoyed this
I always enjoy siouxsie and the banshees.
Very good post-punk album. Great instrumentation, riffs, like the vocals, there's a good sense of catchiness too.
just in time for Halloween. just a really sick album, siouxsie has an amazing voice and she really showcases it here. just mind the casual racism
I enjoyed it. I feel like they did this album near Halloween for a reason
Fun campy goth rock/postpunk
That was unexpectedly really good. I thought all of the songs were consistently solid, exploring a variety of themes while still rocking really hard.
What a perfect album to get during spooky season.
Perfect fusion of post-punk and goth rock. Amazing bass, drums and guitar and singular vocals.
Man, I’d heard their later hits, but I hadn’t heard this one before! This is very good.
This pleasantly surprised me
Divertido e diferente, mas nada incrivel demais
It was nice. Not exactly my type of music but an enjoyable listen
Honestly, I kind of liked it. Even if it was a bit drawn out.
Well crafted post punk vibes, almost haunting in its delivery as they moved onwards towards the darker goth-y sounds of the early 80s
I was really expecting not to like this... but... I really liked it. You learn something new every day.
COOL!! i like how theatrical this is while maintaining what feels like an authentic and dynamic darkness. fav tracks: spellbound; into the light; monitor
I like her sound a lot! She cultivates such a specific feeling and aura with her experimental singing style and production.
Yess.
I liked this a lot, will be listening again
Excellent album to get in October. Atmospheric and witchy.
Best gothic I’ve ever heard
Siouxsie's vocals, the guitarist and drummer combine to make one the best and least kitschy dark albums ever. There's only a couple of really stand-out bangers, but the tone and talent is present throughout. There's also some pretty sweet experimental guitar techniques/sounds
Rösten!!! Med bättre material så ... Fyra.
Really enjoyed this one. Kinda like Joan Jett with more edge and guitars tuned way down. 4/5
mood?
Fun to listen to music referenced in Goths(2017). Was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. I found the lyrics a bit repetitive at times but I liked her voice and the instrumentation. Now I’ve got to listen to Abandoned Flesh again. Fav song: Monitor Least fav: Halloween
How have I never listened to Siouxsie And The Banshees before! One (of many) bands mentioned as Lanes inspiration in Gilmore Girls so I've heard the name many times. I really enjoyed this album, love her voice. Favourite song: Into The Light Least: Voodoo Doll
Oh yeah, we had The Scream earlier in the list, and I remember being surprised by it and loving it. This is another great slice of post punk. Loads going on, and sounds so good today.
REALLY cool and great stuff. I think I'm a big fan of this gothic rock type sound.
I was juju'ing on that beat for sure. Great example of super dark-sounding gothic rock straight from its heyday - not quite to the level of The Cure, but approaching it.
Had to give this the second listen (which was actually my third) to really vibe with this. It is a really heavy, dark album. Siouxsie is using her voice like both an instrument and a weapon. The drums are amazing and the guitar is delightfully weird. It's very atmospheric and I agree with my colleague that it reminds me of shoegaze for sure (Tinderbox is still my favorite though)
Fun but slightly too ethereal for my taste
Took a while to get into it. Then I realised I needed to listen to it loud. Will try listening while wearing black eyeliner as the next stage to push it up to a 5.
I've been constantly listening to this album for the past 5 days and I have to say, it is one of the catchiest records with a dark sound I've ever heard. This album is very simple and yet effective. It is a post punk record with the first half focusing in the catchy side, presenting a more comercial sounding material while having obscure themes and lyrics; and the second one focuses way more in creating obscure and moody atmospheres with the instruments. A great example would be the ending song 'Voodoo Dolly' with its noise build up. In the end, a fantastic album with powerful performances. Only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because I think some songs, like 'Monitor' our 'Head Cut' become a bit repetitive over time, but they are still incredible.
I'm imagining a series about a coven of punk rock witches who fight the evils of mindless consumer culture and the entire soundtrack is just this album. It's a pretty cool movie.
Have largely the same impression of Juju as I do of The Scream - this is way ahead of its time and I can hear influences on lots of artists I like, like PJ Harvey, Austra, and Ladytron. 'Spellbound' is the real monster hit here, with everything else paling in comparison - but still a fun listen.
4.1 Wow, very impressive. I was thinking it sounded like a dark version of early new wave, only to find afterwards it was part of a genre called dark-wave...never heard the term before but very fitting. Siouxsie's voice captivating, starts off strong and doesn't let up. Sin in my Heart is the pinnacle, but even the last two tracks don't bring it crashing down to earth too hard. Wished I had been introduced to this in my teens, I like to think I'd have dug it.
Probably a three for my actual taste but I’m sort of blown away how relevant and modern this feels 40 years later. So much of the 2000s nyc indie rock revival feels directly drawn from songs like ‘monitor’ - the yeah yeah yeahs can’t hold a candle to the is chick.
I like it.
Really enjoyed this
Wow, I can definitely see where Cocteau Twins got a lot of their influence from. I really like this, overall I think that what Cocteau Twins did in the coming years is just a little bit better, but I always love hearing where some of my favourite bands got their ideas from, even if I think the original isn't quite as good.
80s alternative at its finest.
I just realized that I've only listened to compilations by Siouxsie and the Banshees... Once/ Twice Upon a Time, their box set. Honestly, I think the deep cuts are better than the ones that I knew from this. Great album, and I'll be returning to it a lot... there's somehow something more positive in this than The Cure's Pornography and Joy Division's Closer, other post-punk albums I've listened to recently because of this project.
Very good. Very witchy. The right amount of punky/noisey for me that was still an easy listen all the way through
Actually ganz gut. Also bisschen Witchy so
Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Easy 4. Tempted to rate it a 5. Siouxsie and the Banshees is a band I've heard of plenty but have never checked out. So glad this list led me to this album. Interesting songs and a dark theme and after listening through a few times the influence on what came later in the alternative scene is hard to deny.
Complex instrumentals and powerful vocals.
Didn’t think that I would like the music but listened to and enjoyed
The five songs comprising Side 1 are just about perfect—a fun, discordant collection of post-punk gems that sound effortless in their creation. Side 2 is a total slog where the emphasis is less punk and more arty pretentiousness that comes across as trying too hard. If the songs weren’t sequenced in this particular order, I don’t know if I would have enjoyed the album as much. That’s how good Side 1 is.
Suzy and the Banshy’s.✨
woo woo
Very good songs and diverse instrumentation. Liked this more than I thought I would.
I'm liking this better than the earlier album The Scream. Siouxsie and her Banshees have honed their talents and pumped out a dark rocker. It has just what you want from a punky-emo-alt-rock album. Cool eerie guitar work, solid beats, and a vocal vixen on the mic. Opening track comes right out the gates swinging. The record picks up steam and peaks with "Monitor." Other than the last track...all good ones. Getting some good JuJu from this one...3.70 stars.
Pure enjoyed that
Brilliant
Have heard the odd song over the years but I never realised they were this good
Really enjoyed this, Siouxie had some setta pipes on her sir
I dig their sound 4.2/5
Super cool album. Vocals are great, guitar is weird in the best way.
8/10
Fire songs
Very good album, catchy songs. Very strong start and ending song. Some songs in the middle get a little bit repetitive. Good concept and execution of the genre.
This is really great. The guitar playing and mood created in each of these songs keeps every feeling very cohesive and interesting. Favorite songs were Spellbound, Into The Light, Arabian Nights, Monitor, and Sin In My Heart.
listened to this once before but i wasn't that wowed, but giving it another chance allowed the post-punk bite to shine through. still a bit halloween-core though.
Goth classic
Quality guitar rock with strong female vocals. Great find from the list. Favorite track: Spellbound other picks: arabian knights, monitor, sin in my heart, voodoo dolly
Cool ass post punk for the goth kids. I was not huge into this scene back in the day, which is too bad, honestly. It's great. Halloween is the classic song, a song that sounds like what it's about. Anxious, spooky. Obviously this album works best when you're feeling a certain kind of way, but overall this is fantastic.
nice album from a great band
I a fucking cool album
Esse álbum é bom pra caramba! Celest Phoenixcall.
I liked this. I really liked Monitor and Sin in My Heart. Great overall, it's actually a 3.5 for me but decided to round up instead of rounding down.
Good rock, clean and melodic but a bit mournful lyrics. Definitely some creepy punk vibes that I like, but a bit too much repetition. The original version of breathe was there, with torn vocals and all.
It's interesting that I got this album right after the Cure's Pornography, both made around the same time. It's a very unique sound. I'm surprised how much I liked it, based on previous singles I've heard. It's amazing that four people produced such sounds that sometimes sounded like eight! Special shout out to John McGeoch, whose intricate and mind expanding guitar work, made this album extra special. Liked Songs Added: Into The Light Monitor Night Shift
I enjoyed the richness of the singer's voice and the darker undertones and themes.
A bit raw and messy but I liked it.
Well now I can see where Wolf Alice got most of her inspiration. This honestly could have been a Wolf Alice record (except for the 70s soft rock one that she released today). I dig it. It has hints of psych/shoegaze/grunge. Some of the parts of the record that don't totally remind me of Wolf Alice remind me of Florence and the Machine who I also really like. This was a sick record. I'll for sure revisit this in the future.
A little bit of Wolf Alice, a little bit of Florence, a little bit of Frankie. This was cool! Minor key and dark. A little bit of punk. I enjoyed this!
This album sounded ahead of its time. I really enjoyed it.
Actually pretty excited to check out this album. I know Mom likes them. An interesting album cover. I like 'Arabian Knights' a bunch. 'Head Cut' is giving me Halloween-y vibes, idk why but it is fun. Didn't get to listen to it as closely as I would've liked. Definitely one I want to return to.
I really liked this one. The whole album was great. I loved Spellbound, Monitor, Into The Light. I am going to listen to it again
Really good one! Dark and hard-rocking, with the thin production retaining the 'punk' element of post-punk as the songwriting and goth attitude pushes the rest of the record toward the 'post'. "Into The Light" almost sounded like a Brian Eno number to me, with the contrasting moods of the two main riffs. Only downside is that the songs do kind of blend together for me, lending the record remarkable cohesion but also making the songs somewhat less memorable on an individual basis. Post-punk is one of my favorite types of rock music; it was really cool to hear one of its foundational works!
How have I not heard of this album. OMG so good.
very good album, halloween and spellbound stood out to me.
Half the songs are pretty good, the other half are fucking awesome. Fave song: Voodoo Dolly Honorable Mention: Spellbound
Its very interesting, definitely cooking. Love the lead singer's voice. Favourite Song: Spellbound
pretty fucking good, solid 4. might change to a 5 after more listens
A fun romp of haunting gothic rock. Budgie's rolling tom grooves perfectly compliment Souxsie's ethereal vocals.
Haunted house at the carnival vibes
I liked this a lot. Surprised I've never heard it before. I'll definitely be coming back to it.
Groundbreaking.
I was really feeling this overall! Doesn’t sound its age at all!
First listen. Like the pulse. Industrial/electronic drums and percussion works for me. Appealing vocals. Like the chord progressions.
Loved this
Like heavy dark syrup.
Went back for a second listen
4.5 really strong album as a whole, i really enjoyed this!
Very interesting. Heard about the band before, but never listened to an album. I liked the dark tone, unique vocals and the driving drumbeat. I did wish more songs used the deeper vocal range like Voodoo Dolly though, it's so gorgeous. I'll probably never listen to this again, but I can appreciate that is very good. A solid four stars.
Being only really familiar with their hits, I was a fan of “Spellbound” already. I have learned from this project that plenty of albums start going downhill after “the hit” - refreshingly, that wasn’t the case here. This is a consistently strong album, showing Siouxsie’s unique sound.
Has all the elements of the greatest rock music from the mid-70s to early 80s. You can hear the impact on Fiona Apple and Ani DiFranco…great stuff!!
Very interesting and cool discovery
Good album that gets a little tiresome
Better than Radiohead, and only that's why it's 4/5. A genuinely good album, but absolutely not my cup of tea. I couldn't even tell whether the singer was a lass or a lad.
Not bad fun sounds
A very good album. Very consistent in building up a mood. The percussion is the stand out across the whole album. A 4⭐ album. Would I listen to this album again? Yes Would I buy this album? Possibly, yes. 1 "Spellbound" - Excellent opener. - This was a single at the time. - 5 ⭐ 2 "Into the Light" - 3 ⭐ 3 "Arabian Knights" - 4 ⭐ 4 "Halloween" - 4 ⭐ 5 "Monitor" - 4 ⭐ 6 "Night Shift" - 4 ⭐ 7 "Sin in My Heart" - I loved this. Atmospheric, with great rolling percussion. The vocals are like a manic prayer or enchantment. - 5 ⭐ 8 "Head Cut" - This album is finishing very strongly. Great bass line. - 5 ⭐ 9 "Voodoo Dolly" - Wonderful doomy closing track. Great percussion. 5 ⭐ Total - 38 Average - 4.22
English 80s rock. Dark and gothy. Very atmospheric, very cool.
Listened Before? N Highly enjoyable 80s punk/pop/new wave stuff. Going to revisit this one later. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: Spellbound
Side one is perfect, the rest is just ok.
No more second rate-- MOVIES. 4.5/5
Fabulous album from start to finish, the bonus tracks were great too. The punk influence was still prominent but the guitar work took it to the next level and you can see how this has been an inspiration to up and coming bands into the 90's and 00's.
Really great, loved this one. Can only see if growing
> The Beatles Surprisingly good
Very good.
Couple good tunes but I’m just not Goth enough for Siouxsie.
I definitely have listened to this before, and it didn't click then. It has now! The guitar sound and patterns are great - this is basically everything I like about Joy Division with a great vocalist
This is a very strong 4. 8.5/10.
Mmy girlfriend and her family, no one of note except her father who was Danny Glover and myself with my oldest daughter as just a toddler were on our way to see The Cure. Apparently this was all a business trip. I was walking around a lot and I kept checking my pockets to see if my medicine was there and if I brought enough with me. I see my girlfriend on a couch and she is being interviewed for a magazine. I plop down next to her and interrupt the interview and tell the writer how great of a cook my girlfriend is and just bragging on her. She tells me not to interrupt and I leave to a crappy hotel banquet room. The food is actually just pictures in a magazine but you could still take a laddie to the picture, dip it and food would come out. In this case potatoes au graten. I'm standing by my girlfriend proud and she looks angry. Sher said she told the interviewer about my dream that I had a present that was poop and picked it up and it was a present again. I angrily respond asking her if she wants to break up. She half heartedly says no and I replied whole heartedly that she does she rolls her eyes face stern and says fine. I angrily walk away. I'm walk the streets which is actually a college hallway and still keep checking my medicine. I pull out a ticket stub that looks used up and think they won't let me into the venue with this. I realize I broke up with my girlfriend and quickly ugly cry then I'm not. From the streets which are actually hallways I look into rooms and see my kids. Then a giant conference room with my girlfriend and her family. I sit far away on the sidelines. In the front is her father Danny Glover. On his right is Pam Grier and on his left my girlfriend. I guess he knew. He was dressed as his character from Royal Tenenbaums. He leans back to talk to my girlfriend and asks her 'does she want to grow up with Julie (Pam Grier) or Rob (me)?' She replies both and he nods in agreement and Says 'Yes, both.'
The first to crop up that I actually have in my collection. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ A solid classic that gets better with age 7/10
Whoa, nice discovery here. Really liked this one on first listen. Doesn’t hurt that I know Trent Reznor admired Siouxsie, and NIN’s first tour was supporting them. But I had never heard this album and really dig it.
Much as I always liked Siouxsie, I never LOVED them in the same way I did The Cure or Sisters of Mercy. It was nice to listen to this after so many years though. I still have them down as a goth band but on this listening, I was far more aware of their choppy post-punk sound. I can definitely hear their lasting influence, might have to dig deeper…
Its like punk rock meets hair metal Best Song: Into the Light Rating: 7/10 (Solid) Stars: 4/5
Great atmosphere
I was worried when this was listed as yet another post punk album, but I was pleasantly surprised listening to it. Others have described it as art rock and dark wave and that makes more sense to me. I didn't like the last song at all, but I would absolutely listen to this again.
Gothy arty post-punk that just has a dark feel but spans a range from dreary depression to creepy to somewhat psychotic. They have a really unique sound (even today) - pounding tribal drums, Siouxsie’s unique and powerful vocals, and guitar that does whatever the hell it wants! Seriously, this is some interesting and original guitar playing - noisy, glistening, disorienting, cutting. The bass adds to the mood and keeps all the other parts together. Interesting listen if you give it the attention.
Somewhat disco punky eighties music. I knew the bands name, but no real memories about their songs. This album is great while working ;)
Really enjoyed this, will revisit.
Dark, dynamic, and swirling. Siouxsie and The Banshee's Juju is a goth/post-punk high-water mark. Filled front to back with great songs, Siouxsie's voice is haunting, and every aspect of musicianship and production is great! Highlights: most of the record!
"Juju" is a bold and experimental album. There's quite a lot of catchy prose and Siouxsie has a powerful voice.
I don't usually listen to goth rock, but this was fun! Very sad-angry, "I want to be strong, independent" girl vibe! 👀 Reminded me of the tv-show Wednesday- which I had enjoyed tremendously! 💀 Album rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1001 ALBUMS- # 62 If Joy Division was fronted by Siouxsie…. The Banshees bring the post to the punk with a glaze of goth 👻 With Juju, the band fully embraced darker themes and a more aggressive sonic landscape, solidifying their legacy in the post-punk and goth scenes. This album marked a key turning point for the group, largely due to the synergy between Siouxsie Sioux’s commanding vocals, Budgie’s tribal drumming, Steven Severin’s hypnotic basslines, and the guitar work of John McGeoch, whose contributions are often singled out as revolutionary. 🎧 Classic Track: Spellbound 🎧 Deep Cut Gem: Halloween 🎧 Personal Favorite: Sin In My Heart 🎧 Memorable Standout: Night Shift Juju is both muscular and mysterious, blending eerie atmospheres with sharp-edged punk energy. The guitar textures are haunting, angular, and complex — McGeoch crafts riffs that are melodic yet dissonant, echoing a sense of menace and allure. Lyrically, the album dives into themes of ritual, madness, the macabre, and gender politics. There’s a theatrical quality to the songs, often unsettling but never without a strange allure. 🖼️ Album Artwork: Some nice looking JuJu’s What truly elevates Juju beyond its musical innovations is its lyrical content and aesthetic coherence. Siouxsie Sioux, with her icy, commanding vocal presence, delves into themes of possession, gendered violence, death, and the uncanny. The lyrics are laced with literary and mythological references, evoking everything from occult rituals to gothic Juju is not simply an album but an incantation. It summons shadows, confronts societal taboos, and reimagines the roles of women in rock music and mythology alike. It is a masterclass in how sound can be sculpted into architecture — towering, eerie, and impossible to ignore. Over four decades later, it still sounds urgent, still feels dangerous, and still casts a spell.
I was originally going to dismiss this album after the initial listing, but felt pulled to come back to it for another try. After some repeated listens, I enjoyed it more, particularly Sioux’s demanding voice. There’s some fun stuff here to be had with its early alt goth punkish sound. My standouts: Spellbound, Sin in my heart, Halloween, monitor.
Took a few songs to grow on me but this album was very good
oh siouxsie you really are the blueprint
Spooky and unconventional. I like it.
It is very unlike me, but this is kind of good? Would listen to again
Arabian Knights has a really great bass tone. Monitor gives me Everlong vibes which is neat
Gothic and iconic
Man, is this album a weird one! Still pretty dang cool though. I hadn’t heard of Siouxsie and The Banshees until this album, and I’m glad I got to experience them. Siouxsie Sioux has a very good voice, almost like a female version of Robert Smith from the Cure. Some of the lyrics on this album are wild, and I don’t think that the band could get away with them today, especially on songs like Arabian Knight and Head Cut. John McGeoch’s guitar is very new wave esque, and the album has some great guitar riffs on it that are quintessentially 80s. Steven Severin and Budgie finish off the band, laying down some good Bass and Drum rhythms. Some of the standout tracks are Spellbound, one of the band’s biggest hits, Halloween, which really sounds like 80s horror movie soundtrack material, and the up tempo Sin in My Heart. Some of the songs could drag on for a little too long, but the majority of the album is solid and a good album for anyone looking for deeper new wave cuts.
Goth rock hell yeah
This is so cool and unique. I really haven't heard anything like this before and I love it
A classic
Wasn't really looking forward to listening to this but I was pleasantly surprised.. The first 3 tracks plus nightshift were standouts and was impressed with the variety of ideas (one guitar riff reminded me of RATM).
Favoriten Arabian knights
Siouxsie is an absolute iconic vocalist. I had the 7” of spellbound then bought this album. I wish it was all like Spellbound. I am a big fan of Budgie too. Good stuff. I’m more of a hits person when it comes to the banshees. Deep cuts are always cool but the psych pop stuff is just so good.
Dark, moody, brilliant
Juju is the fourth studio album for Siouxsie and the Banshees. While much of their music is influential, Juju is frequently noted as an inspiring work, both for Siouxsie's vocals and for John McGeoch's inventive guitar work. McGeoch was only briefly a member of the band; he only appeared on the band's third and fourth albums. Over time, Juju has become known as one of the defining works of post-punk. Souixsie is iconic - her edgy, angry delivery made her an idol for generations of female vocalists. The Banshee's droning, effects-laden guitars were as influential; they inspired much of the alt-rock of the 80's and 90s.
Spellbound 3.7 Into the Light 3.9 Arabian Knights 3.5 Halloween 3.6 Monitor 3.6 Night Shift 3.8 Sin in My Heart 3.4 Head Cut 3.7 Voodoo Dolly 3.1 Score: 3.588888889

Cool
I really like this band.
I really dig the sound but the lyrics are a bit too witchy for me. I don't mind the occasional dark song but this is excessive. I won't be listening to their other albums. Still giving it a strong 4 stars though because musically it is great. And I'm trying to be unbiased while going through this list of albums
I dig it. Cast a hex on me Siouxsie!!!!!
Siouxsie Sioux carries on the exuberances of Patti Smith, approaches the animation of Kate Bush, prefigures the spirit of Joy Division, and betters the one-note gothic axioms of The Cure. 'No more second rate movies / From those people outside'; 'Fuck the others kill the mothers.' Clamorous and haunting, they add layers of loudness to what could've been a drag of depression. Good on them for that, since I'd not want to endure a sluggish burn. But ultimately, Sioux suffers from the same shortcomings as Robert Smith. Except for 'Head Cut,' which features fun, frolicking vocals, each track possesses a monotony that is finally exhausted. Salvaged by hefty drumming, effective distortion, and aesthetic resolve, however, it persists.
The vocals are really reminiscent of fleetwood mac but the overall vibe of the album is giving stranger things season 5.
This is an album that I had to listen to twice before I could make up my mind about it and I got held up on this review for nearly a week. Upon my first listen I felt it was a bit monotonous and campy and Siouxsie's vocals were a bit overbearing, although the overall sound and atmosphere is very forceful and unique in a way that is very interesting and appealing. But I also felt that I was missing something and it deserved a closer listen. I'm glad I did, because on the second listen I was able to better appreciate the musicianship and especially the guitar work on this album is very cool and impressive and, as far as I know, pretty unique for 1981. Their sound as a whole is remarkably cohesive and polished, as if it exists in its own universe, in a way that impresses me that this album was released in 1981. The first 5-6 tracks of this album are all really strong. They're dark and groovy and kinda funky and very catchy and just have this larger-than-life aura about them that really feels like some kind of magic was bottled in making this record. Unfortunately, I feel it kind of peters out on the last three tracks. By that point it's just a little too much of the same. Perhaps if I keep listening to this album, which I believe I probably will, I will come around to these tracks as well. I hope so, because for what it is this album is near perfect until the last three tracks. Playlist pick: "Spellbound" or "Halloween"
Maybe the 8 incredibly tough to get through albums I had preceding this one lowered my expectations, but this was great! Fun, interesting, a breath of fresh air.
It’s hard to believe this album is from 1981. Did Siouxsie see the future or did the future imitate her? She balances the urgency of the punk that broke 4 years earlier with the gloom and drone that would come to define goth. This album defines goth. It’s a flagplanter record. Still sounds both modern and out of time.
There are reasons why Siouxsie is a post-punk goddess and they're all apparent here. A classic!
Lekker album. Beetje garage en punky.
Punk rock meets New Wave. The guitar playing especially is a standout.
This was a delightfully dark and spooky album. No specific notes other than I enjoyed the whole thing. Low 4 for me.
That was some neat unique guitar throughout the whole album. Not normally my favorite type of music but something about this album really worked for me. The last song was quite strange, but not enough to knock this out of a 4. A low 4 but still good
Halfway through Spellbound and it reminds me a ton of the Cure. Getting some Television vibes from this as well and honestly really into it. The guitar is fantastic. Highly enjoyable I want more of that.
This has a lot of interesting songs and some cool riffs. Would be worth another listen
The opening song is a banger, but the rest don't really do anything to stand out. I like the atmosphere of gothic rock and the pleasant vocals, but this album is a bit monotonous and becomes repetitive rather quickly. 7/10
My new Halloween Jam. Been meaning to familiarize myself more with Siouxsie, glad this came up. 80’s post-punk is always welcome in these ears. This album is solid, this band is tight, a little creepy without trying too hard to be shocking and gross. Today I learned that the drummer in this iteration of the Banshees is named Budgie (love it, plus his drumming is great). Also learned that the original Banshees used to include Sid Vicious and a member of Adam and Ants. Siouxsie, Adam Ant, punks with “Mohawk” haircuts, what’s with the Native American pseudo-cultural appropriation? Do these young white kids see themselves as oppressed as victims of genocide? Or are they just ignorant and think, I like the face paint, I want an X in my name, the hair looks cool? But I digress. Here’s the bottom line. Next Halloween, put this on the stereo, don’t dress up as a stereotype of an oppressed minority. We can separate the art from the artist and not feel like liberal hypocrites! Wait, what’s the title of this album again? Juju? Jesus Christ, Siouxsie.
Very nice.
Piekny wokal. 7.5/10
Great album, really important historically since it sits right at the hinge point where goth emerged from the post-punk scene. 8/10
Full disclosure … I’d count myself as a fan but hadn’t heard this before. I liked it 👍
I never realised how much S and the B's have been getting ripped off these days!
Enjoyed that one. Post punk, rock, solid sound
forgot to rank it but really really liked it
Æ hadde kanskje ikke en klar formening om kordan det her kom til å høres ut, men æ like det relativt godt! Veldig fascinert av omslaget?
Spooky and passionate. A really cool post-punk record that doesn’t get nearly enough attention. Monitor is AMAZING - sometimes the simplest lines (this case, the bass) can be most impactful, and gosh is the guitar great.
I've been a fan for over 40 years. I love this album
Generally lukewarm on this overall style, but this is among the best I’ve heard. 4/5
80% Best: Into The Light; Monitor; Sin In My Heart Must-Hear? Maybe
- I can't summon up a 5 but I look at the year released and I would have thought it was later than 1981 .... it's probably a shortcoming on my part as I was never familiar with this genre at the time so it's hard for me to put the work in context. Easily a solid 4. -
Mixed to positive feelings for this one... musically I like it, but the vocals are a bit to monotone for me. But I might come back to it, it's above meh and below great ^_^...
Loved it, particularly when running!
Angry 80's girl rock! It is full of emotion and is raw and angry. Was it a lot, sure, but in the 80's women had one option, to yell and be mad and talk around things not directly at things. Spellbound was a great start to a rocking good time.
There's a pretty rockin' good time to be had in this dark world they've created. I've never listened to a Siouxsie album, so this was all new to me. I usually scoff at post punk, but these songs felt more polished and structured than a lot of music in the genre. I love her vocals, and the band sounds really tight. Dug it!
Amazing album. Vibes
Certainly ahead of its time. Great album, amazing guitar tone.
Siouxsie gets pigeonholed as being goth, and this is indeed probably her darkest album. Juju offers a pervasive sense of danger and menace, such as on the slow-burn screech of "Night Shift" or the spine-tingling guitar cascades of "Voodoo Dolly." I never really think of her as goth — and certainly not in a dismissive or limiting way — simply because she's such a skilled songwriter, with a great ear for distinctive, unusual sounds. Juju is filled with bangers, like the single "Arabian Knights," which could (and certainly did) hold its own on the dancefloor, the motorik chug of "Monitor" and the caustic and urgent pace set by "Halloween." It's a potent witch's brew of tribal drums and percussion (I hear tambourines!), jagged guitars, claustrophobic melodies and Siouxsie's commanding presence.
Man this brings back so many baby bat/teen goth memories it is hard to objectively review this. Is this one of the first 50 lps I bought that I still own? Yes. Have I listened to it in the last 20 years? No. Do I know it almost by heart? Yes. So in Siouxsie's own words from Spellbound "yah have nooh choicce" but to rate this 4 or 5.
Amazing stuff, I especially loved "Arabian Knights" and "Voodoo Dolly".
I definitely enjoyed this record. Suggest me more of that kind. Finally a female singer - OMG! After all these plain guy (indie) rock shit. And I looove indie rock, but enough is enough. Give me the edgy stuff. Please and thank you!
Like you recorded a rock album at the Haunted Mansion, but this time it was actually good
Early goth stuff is so goddamn cool. You’d think it would benefit from crossing wires with metal a bit later on, but you’d be wrong. This is a round down. One day I’ll listen to this again and regret not rounding up.
For a band I’d never heard of before, Juju was a great surprise. This album absolutely rocks from start to finish with an atmospheric, goth-infused post-punk sound that’s both edgy and catchy. The vocals at times even evoking a slightly punked-out Geddy Lee vibe. If there’s a downside, it’s that a few tracks tend to blend together, but as a whole, this album delivers a strong, consistent mood that kept me hooked. Definitely glad this is on the list.
A pretty good album, although it definitely peaks with the first track. A few others were definitely worth a listen - Monitor, in particular. Definitely worth a listen, although not as good as I hoped it would be. Strong 3/low 4, just ending up as 4 due to no real bad tracks.
This is amazing - I hear a lot of The Cure, Joy Division, Magazine etc. in this. The best soup you could serve me
I thought this album was good and influential but I didn’t make it through it all the way. I think that’s a me thing more than the band.
Spellbound was a great opener. Very upbeat and it has a great vocal hook. Arabian Nights has a very enticing baseline and some Phil Collins-esque drumming. The frenetic instrumentation and distinctive vocals make this a very enjoyable record.
Killer guitar riffs, great bass lines, and angsty female vocals for the win. I loved the overall feel this album gave off, Goth punk with some serious Doors vibes going on, especially on the last track "Voodoo Dolly." There's a darkness here and I like it. I could easily see myself listening to this again very soon.
Juju is urgent, frantic. You can hear their influence on bands like Bloc Party and Sleater-Kinney, even Bjork at times. A great post punk album from start to finish. With a pounding rhythm section and blaring guitars 8.3/10
Spellbound and arabian knights are the best songs
Spooky and kooky baby
Siouxsie and the Banshees are just timeless. This album sounds just as good in 2025 as it did the first time I heard it back in 1985. Album came out in 1981, but 1985 was the year I really started paying attention to what we called "alternative" back then. Can't miss tunes: Spellbound Halloween Monitor Head Cut 3.75/5
This could almost be a gothic pastiche if it wasn’t so brilliantly done, the lyrics so authentically creepy that you could almost be forgiven for thinking that Siouxsie grew up in the bowels of hell, rather than the Kent suburbs. The album’s masterstroke, though, is in allaying such gloomy, suspense-filled material with the best melodies of their career, and music with so much adventure it seems to fire off in a new direction from one minute to the next. Spellbound – the single that opens the album – is typical, cascading from jangling, psychedelic guitars to galloping tribal drumming, via a headrush of sound, voice, danger and exhilaration.
I may be an unrealized goth. I dug this quite a bit. Drums and bass were cool throughout the whole album. Vocals were a bit wild at times, but it fit well.
I like a lot of stuff that's in the Siouxsie orbit (The Cure, Smiths, Joy Division, Ministry) but have never really connected with them before. Looking at their albums, they seem to be one of those acts that put their accessible single as the first track, as they do here with Spellbound. I liked a couple of other tracks but it still wasn't really clicking with me until we got to Monitor and Night Shift, which were eerie and dystopian and more of what I wanted from an album called 'Juju'.
Love the sound! It sounds so ahead of its time
it’s so creative and they’re full of that wild young talent but there’s something sickly decadent at the heart of it, it feels like you took something you wish you hadn’t but it’s too late now
I didn't find it as transformative as many of the other reviewers. It's dark and weird, of course -- but I prefer some of their slightly later material. Still, worth a listen -- and you can really hear their influence in bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who must have mainlined a *ton* of Siouxsie and such.
Weird but nice
Spellbound
Somehow never listened to them. It's more gothy than punk. Powerful vocalist and easy to see their influence on later punk, new wave, and even dream pop stuff.
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this one. I’d just finished a Nirvana marathon. Moody and enjoyable. I liked it. Thought the vocals were a little repetitive, but other than it’s decent.
