Reviews (page 3 of 11)
What an excellent album this is. Everything thing about it just screams "tight." This was a new discovery for me when I heard it my non-group account, and it fits perfectly into that punk-adjacent sound that I crave. Favorite track: Sin in my Heart
whoa this album was pretty cool. i really enjoyed it. pretty dark sounding, a bit aggressive - but not overly so. i didn't expect to really like this one because i know siouxsie has a tendency to be "goth" and that is not my vibe. but this album was pretty cool. I would definitely love to return to this one in the future!
Amamzing my cousin had this CD when I was a kid and Had no clue who the group was
Siouxsie and the Banshees is a band I love but don’t know. That is, I know and love a couple of their songs (including Spellbound), but for whatever reason I haven’t sought them out so my knowledge of them is extremely limited. That’s been a mistake. This album is fantastic (with the exception of Voodoo Dolly).
I almost wrote this off for sounding so much like famous bands that came later but the reception other people on here gave it caused me to give it a relisten. Most importantly, checking out their music videos, which in this era is an essential part of the package. Now I'm hooked and am telling friends about this band, which is as good as it gets for me.
Juju comes from that point in time when Goth was emerging into the mainstream punk/new wave scene. Which is admittedly weird when I write it. A follow up to Siouxsie And The Banshees' Goth masterpiece, Kaleidoscope, Juju is intense from the opening song, Spellbound, which was a significant club hit in the U.S. The synths are dark, the rhythms jittery, and vocals unnerving. Perfect Goth. Five years later, Siouxsie And The Banshees was about dance music with only a hint of Goth. This album, plus Kaleidoscope, Nocturne, and Hyaena, represent the height of the band's Goth period and first wave Goth in general.
Pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this. Great drive throughout the album, vocalist very unique. Would listen to again!
One of my favorites
The only thing I have against this album is why didn’t I listen to it back in the day. Every song is great except that last one, Voodoo Doll (which I’m sure is every Siouxsie goth girl’s all time fave). Fun 80s/90s college alternative album for taking you back to when you wore black fingernail polish and smoked clove cigarettes
Any album that contains one of my favourite tracks of all time,"Spellbound", has to score a 5, but the rest of the album is quite good as well.
LOVE LOVE LOVE. WIsh I had discovered this 20 years ago. Amazing, glorious. Instant save beforen the first song was done.
Joyjoy
Nice energy!
Fire
I really enjoyed it, it was gloomy and groovy
Cool post punk album.
This reminds me of my friend in Jr High. She was into this New Wave stuff. I miss her.
Spellbound: From the first notes, I knew this would be good. Post-punk vibes - you can definitely see where The Smiths got their influence. Siouxsie's vocals are great here - the chorus is catchy despite the dark undertones, but the drums give such life to the track. Into The Light: The guitar phasers - classic 80's. I don't care what anyone says, it's cool af. This is such a cool guitar riff behind the drums. Is this about aliens? I hope this is about aliens because hell yeah. Arabian Knights: Love the gothic feel of this song, the drums and bass sound straight out of a Joy Division album. The guitar work and chorus sound like a Cure track. Good shit. Halloween: Man, this is definitely a guitar-centric album but it sounds so good. I love how every track has that dark, gothic vibes but sounds so bright and vibey. Her voice is perfect for this. Monitor: That first riff, god daaaaamn. Have I said her voice is perfect for this, with the effects, chefs kiss. This is some Orwellian lyrical shit though. OH AND THE RIFF RETURNS, YES. Nice little fake out. The snare pops picking up now. You know this song goes hard live. Night Shift: Ooooooh, first slow track? The guitars just make this sound so cool. The vibes really fit the stabby, rip, stab, stab lyrics. Dark, eerie, mysterious. Maybe not the first track I'd show someone to introduce them, but it's a nice break from the faster pace tunes. The feedback ending too is rad. Sin In My Heart: The drums fading in with the picked chord progression, niiice. This intro is such a cool way to pick up the pace. The drums are the stand out on this track for me. This track feels short but that's because they spend the first minute bringing in the tune but yeah, it slaps. The little guitar noodly between the two verses is fun as heck. THE DRUMS in the ending, god daaamn. Head Cut: The screeeeeam. Yes Siouxsie, yes. Do I want to dance? This is kind of dance-y right? And the phasey guitars just really add to the vibe and the little riffs intertwined. The riffs between vocal takes sounds like a Mario boss battle. But the SCREAMS. One of the better vocal standout tracks too. Voodoo Dolly: Slower tune again, very gothic. The drums and the riffs picking up, ooookaaaay, I see you. This is a vibe with the feedback and the reverby vocals. The build up of this track really fits a closer vibe. We speedin' up baaaaby. A wall of noise with the vocals - holy shit, yeah, this is my jam. This is the longest track on the album but it doesn't feel long with the way they use the song to it's fullest. There are lyrics obviously but the way the vocals work with the tremolo picking of the guitars and the drums are just perfect. And the comedown with the slower drumming and the less frantic guitar work. Wow. I'm surprised I never listened to this and I should have sooner.

Goth GOAT
Fantastic album start to finish. Interesting arrangements and progressions, great vocals and lyrics.
It's the Banshees. Not sure which I preferred out of the two records in this list but they're both great.
I own this album, partially because I'm a Gen X and we love good music.
okay sweet. i think i underrated there alt album a bit, i have been listening to 'switch' by them so much. Im excited for this one. INTO THE LIGHT SO FIREEEE. Holy fuck this goes so hard. bro this album is peak.
The post punk album that shaped the goth sound. It's atmospheric and sinister without being mopey like contemporaries The Cure. The opening track starts out with a familiar sounding guitar riff, but you're soon dragged into the darkness of a claustrophobic, yet melodic journey. There's a brooding menace in these songs that very few bands have been able to replicate.
My daughter's been into goth lately, and she has turned me on to some of the gems from this period, including some of the songs from this album. Today, though, was the first time I listened to the whole thing. This is top-tier I love everything about it. Her singing is so great. The band is fantastic. I love the production, the drums, and the guitars. I love how emotional and weird intense and unrelentingly harrowing it is, and I can't wait to go around again. 5/5
NONE MORE BLACK
Classic. One of my favorite albums to play during the Halloween season.
This absolutely ruled. Love the gothic punk vibes. Felt like I should be listening in a dimly lit room surrounded by people dressed in black. 4.5/5
#1, #3, #9
great album with a really distinct sound to it! definitely made me a fan and I'll be checking out what else they offer. If you want a heavier 80's punk, its all here.
What a surprise this album was! Lovely gothic punk. This one’s going into the rotation
Real cool
DUDE!!!!
Terrific album, few bands have as much personality and feeling as Siouxsie and the Banshees.
Angular and sharp post punk and goth. Great guitar and vocals thru out.
Superb. I probably wouldn’t have appreciated it in 1981, but regret not listening to this sooner.
Heard of this band of course but never checked it out behind the couple songs from radio play. I really liked this and will listen again
October was a great time of the year to get this album. The spooky vibes are awesome. It feels like the soundtrack to an 80s slasher movie. There were some sections that were too repetitive for my liking but overall the album was a fun listen. Spellbound, Halloween, Voodoo Dolly, and Arabian Knights were among my favorites.
After listening to Juju, It has become my favorite album I reviewed through this project so far. Siouxsie's singing was really great and the music was absolutely top notch for what it was. I didn't think that this album would become my favorite so far (topping Jeff Buckley's Grace) but here we are. My first 5 star album on this project for sure. Best Song: Monitor Worst Song: Into The Light
Good drums
great one cause I'm already listening to my halloween playlist and this one fits right in.
nah this was wicked, wayyy better than expected
Goth pop wonderland!!
Really strong album for 1981. It sets the tone for 80s alternative without feeling dated. “Monitor” is pretty sick and surprisingly proto grunge. The EBow on “Sin In My Heart” is rad. Great tone across the board. The lyrics are the only thing I don’t love.
amazing
This is phenomenal. Extremely gripping instrumentals on every track. The voice and lyrics mix together perfectly with them as well. Truly impressive arrangements. Favorite track: Monitor
Great punky album with awesome female vocalist
My internal goth felt ecstatic.
I've never listened to any Siouxsie and The Banshees' music before, but based on what I've heard about them, I had an idea of what to expect. I'm happy to say that my expectations were met and exceeded with this album. I imagined that S&TB would sound like some sort of hybrid of The Cure and Echo & The Bunnymen, and not to pat myself on the back too much, but I'd say my imagination was pretty spot on. This album reminded me of what I love about both of those bands (cavernous and complex sounds with haunting lyrics and vocals), but still managed to sound completely unique. Just like The Cure, S&TB manages to produce their distinct sound in several different ways; sometimes its with guitar riffs, like on "Into The Light," or sometimes it's with percussion, like the booming bass drums and cymbal riding on "Arabian Knights." Other times, the band uses something else entirely to produce their haunting sound, like the building tempo of "Sin In My Heart." No matter how they do it, S&TB does it well. I love their use of distortion and sounds like breaking glass to create such a sense of unease and dread with their music. Siouxsie Sioux's vocals are absolutely incredible, and it's a nice change to hear a female voice in a post punk band. I think this album was probably a huge influence on several artists, especially Chvrches, who are probably my favorite currently active band, and that just makes me love this album even more. I'm so glad I got to experience this album today, and I know it'll be in my permanent rotation, especially in October.
The best album that I discovered here so far... I didn't know the band before besides their popular song, Happy House, which I love. After a few listens it's definitely going to be among my favourites.
Great album with a lovely early-80's lo-fi sound that compliments airy, melancholy tones while still maintaining an upbeat post-punk feel.
A total 5. One of the most influential artists and a pilar of post punch and goth rock. Juju is a fantastic, flawless album that set the tone of the 80s dark wave music. Before The Cure made this sound, Siouxie already crafted the formula. Love all her phases and the journey she went during the 80s and early 90s. These songs are regular in my playlist.
Amazing album, love it. Saved the first 6 songs, I think the last 3 are bit weaker. But overall siiick
I really liked it and it's no surprise given how much I like Metric and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Cool to hear their precursor.
This is the reason I'm signed up for this. Love this album and have never heard of the band before this.
This album is a post-punk masterpiece with tinges of goth rock. The album is dark, especially the back half and features some of the best rhythm work in the genre. The guitar work is phenomenal and utilizes drones and arpeggios to create a mood. The use of noise is similarly atmosphere building. Overall, this album is probably one of the best post-punk albums I’ve ever heard.
This is a band that I had heard so much about but never explored their music. I will be going deeper into their discography because it's a great example of early post-punk. Good listen.
The first Banshees album I bought and it's still great over 40 years later!
love it
I first heard and was enraptured by Siouxsie And The Banshees a couple of years after this first came out. When working through the back catalogue, this album was initially overshadowed for me by the two albums immediately before and after (Kaleidoscope and A Kiss In The Dreamhouse). But over time it's come to be my favourite. Was delighted when the website selected this for me today, and no question about the score.
What a cool album. This will take a few more listens to really sink in, but love it already. I was vibing to the whole thing while cleaning, but Monitor really stood out in my first listen through!
Oh! So much better than the last Siouxsie and the Banshees' album we had. I love this one!
A marked improvement from their debut album. This feels more deliberate and constructed, as if they've honed in on their signature sound after some experimentation. I'll certainly be returning to this album soon! Standout tracks were Spellbound, Arabian Knights, and Monitor.
I'm not that familiar with this band, apart from their major hits. However, I loved this from start to finish and will definitely be revisiting it. Love the overall aesthetic, the vocals, and the unusual guitar sounds. This seems to have been really original for the time.
Hey this was extremely good! I don't think I could have survived school years if I'd been checked into gothy stuff, but their music continues to be fantastic
Really liked this, and didn't know it already. 4.5/5
I gave the other album a 4 but I'm leaning towards 5 for this one so let's do that. Enjoyable from start to finish, wonderfully atmospheric.'' Faves: Spellbound, Arabian Nights
Shame on me, I had never taken the time to listen to this band until today. What a wonderful discovery! I really like post-punk, but I really love the "goth rock" style, so I was delighted. Unique vocals and powerful percussion alongside all you need in great gothic and dark 80s music. I will certainly buy this record and listen to it over and over again.
Ever since I started getting deeper into music listening, I've noticed that I tend to find the Post-Punk genre (and some extent Gothic Rock) to be a mixed-bag. Some bands I can dig, but frequently I'll find particurally acclaimed bands that I can't really get behind all too well. With bands like Joy Division, Wire, and The Cure, I'll find myself enjoying them from time to time, but I never find enough in them to really stick with me for long. With this in mind, Juju was a great surprise to me. Nearly all of the tracks are crafted incredibly well in its dark, yet somehow inviting atmosphere with just the right kind of production. If there's one thing here that stands out the most though, it would be Siouxsie's vocal work across this record. Such a perfect voice for this style of music in my opinion. Fantastic Album. Would recommend. Favourites: "Spellbound", "Into The Light", "Monitor", "Night Shift"
First time listening to Siouxise and the Banshees, loved this album ,really starts with a bang, dark and melodic with great female vocals gives it a right badass feel. Been swaying between and 4 and a 5 all day, but this really is an album I’ll listen to a lot now, so due to personal taste this gets 5 stars.
"Into the light" "Voodoo Dolly" i "Spellbound" niesamowicie wpadły mi w ucho i są teraz regularnie słuchane na przestrzeni ostatnich paru dni. Poza genialnym wokalem niesamowicie ciekawe i bogate tło muzyczne. Moim zdaniem najlepszy do tej pory album.
Dark and gothic, but also driving and catchy. A clear inspiration for some of my favourite artists, with great singles to boot.
This album rocks! I love the Halloween aesthetic about the whole thing. Plus the vocals, being female, make it sound pretty badass.
Maybe I'm biased because I'm listening to this while walking and that puts me in a good mood, but this is absolutely *chefs kiss* I feel like I've been steamrollered and I mean that in the best possible way Spellbound is an EXCELLENT intro and everything else just flows from there, I particularly love the bounciness of Monitor! Basically it's my favourite album on here so far (I know we're only a few days in but hey)
This was so good! Energetic, boppy music from start to finish. Loved the vibe and Siouxsie's voice, a few songs have gone straight into my halloween playlist.
This album was so good I hit my thumb with a hammer at least 4 times and didn’t even care
Like the crosspoint between early Cure and early U2 and extremely my shit. Can’t believe I hadn’t listened to this sooner.
Side one of this album is amazing, genuinely a 10/10 - exactly my type of music. Side two does get a bit fillery and I'm not a fan of the final track. The entire album would probably be like a 8.5/10 at worst. Really great.
Wow, glad I revisited this. I listened to Siouxsie and the Banshees when I was younger and was big into punk - but I always found most of this punk-adjacent stuff was lacking the raw energy. I also never got into gothic rock and it's still not a genre I care for. Having said all that: holy shit this is a strong album. More interesting, artistic and consistent than 90% of "classic" punk records, so teenage me was wrong to dismiss it. I've long enjoyed the dark, menacing restraint of post-punk which this has down to a tee. But it also makes them work with softer new wave elements. Favourite track is probably "Monitor", but this album is solid from start to finish. 5*
Love it.
Brilliant!!!
This somehow influenced city of caterpillar and ghost. Love this 5/5
This has always just been a name to me and never consciously listen to them. More fool me, I really liked it. Sounds sick considering it's older than me! Really influential too. 9/10
Always a pleasure listening to Siouxsie and the Banshees. Excellent post-punk. Sweet riffs, nice guitar/bass tone, Siouxsie is a treasure. Great listen.
Juju was the grand Marshall on the parade that ushered in the 80s. So influential. This album impacts so many artists that we would learn to love.
Very 80s, not bad.
Love you bat-girl 🖤🦇🥀
It was a pleasure having such a classic on this list. Maybe I’m just biased being already familiar with the entire album, but I still couldn’t help but dance along to every single song. Siouxsie Sioux reminds us why she’s the mother of goth music with her iconic spooky vocals, graveyard beats, and ghastly synths. Although not the type of album one would describe as “emotional”, it inspires a deliciously gloomy mood. To me, that’s the baseline of all effective goth music.
Great find, really pressing atmosphere - not what I normaly listem to - but that's what this project is all about
hey thats highkey kewl
This rocks! It dragged a little on a couple of songs, but I need more female-led rock in my ears. 8/10 Most Excellent
its ok
In the moments where they strip back, the album loses momentum. However, the ones where they go all-out more than make up for it.
Aloituskappale tuttu jostain, en oo ihan varma mistä. Tykkäsin kuitenkin, saattaa mennä uudestaan kuunteluun. Jostain syystä naisvetoset levyt iskeny paremmin tältä aikakaudelta.
A surprise, wonderful vocals
A masterpiece through and through from a masterful band. guitar work is unreal. Siouxsie's voice is unreal. I love this album and always will. It is a piece of music I will cherish forever. Happy to listen to it in full again as it's been a very long while. Some albums on this list piss me off - but I am truly glad this one was here. I had to listen to Yeezus right before this and wanted to rip my skin off. Now, I feel very happy and my skin does too.
Better than Coldplay
Liked a lot!
I liked this.
Good
Magically good Juju! ★★★★
Siouxper!
At last! The first Siouxsie and the Banshees album! Even when John McGeoch and Budgie replaced Kenny Morris and John McKay on the previous year's Kaleidoscope, the band's establishing principle was unchanged: Siouxsie and Severin would write the songs together, an odd vocal and bass duet, and present them to the band. I think you can hear the use of bass as a compositional instrument on the album still - I would have sworn Arabian Knights was one such instance, but Wikipedia says Siouxsie wrote that herself, unusually on guitar; Night Shift obviously begins with Severin - but there is no Banshees album were the unit is more fully integrated as a band, where their interplay is what organises the music. By the following album, they will introduce more instruments and produce great recordings moreso than great performances. Two albums down the line, the dynamic is all over the place: McGeoch is ejected over substance misuse and the romantic relationship between Siouxsie and Budgie destabilises her creative relationship with Severin, who teams up with Robert Smith instead. Thus, for one brief moment, the Banshees is a band of equals with shared goals and abilities, all pointed in the same direction. They are no longer just a thrashing machine that makes Siouxsie sound good. Ultimately, Morris and McKay weren't as interested in that as Siouxsie and old boyfriend, Severin, and old boyfriend, Nils Stevenson, their manager. If you are to be in the Banshees, you have to foreground Siouxsie. And, thus, She still sounds good here, if more restrained than on The Scream, but then, everybody sounds good - McGeoch casually invents Johnny Marr on Spellbound and Deftones on Monitor; Budgie simply plays drums like nobody else. This hides a certain shallowness in the songwriting, where Siouxsie is much more concerned with atmosphere than any lyrical depth, but what an atmosphere. She can try for depth later. 4 Well this blew me away. It is my own fault I suppose that Siouxsie and the Banshees has entirely passed me by until recently despite being around my entire life. I am sure someone told me but apparently they didn’t tell me hard enough. Siouxsie’s voice and lines are mesmerising. John McGeoch’s guitar….actually I’ll skip the blazon because truthfully I just loved what everyone did. I loved everything about this. Except Voodoo Dolly. Alongside CCR as the discovery I am most grateful for in the course of the few hundred albums we are through so far. 4/5
Typical Koornbeurs music! (The Koornbeurs was the student association I was once a member of). I often danced to this.
Intensely atmospheric with a gothic kick to it. Full of great performances and enchanting landscapes. 4/5
# Album Name: Juju # Artist: Siouxsie And The Banshees # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Enjoyable album. Quite dark and gothic. Nice change with female vocalist. First half of the album is much stronger. # Top Tunes: Spellbound / AK / Halloween / monitor / Night shift # Would I listen to it again? Yes
i like the songs individually but i find that i cant listen to multiple back to back without getting slightly irritated/ sick of it. i think it's just her voice gets a little grating after a while. but again i do like the songs
Awesome sound and a dark, eerie and tense atmosphere, as was to be expected looking at the genres. I thought the vocals were really good and I loved the guitar throughout, which was sometimes jangly and other times distorted and blasting great riffs. Favourite songs: Arabian Knights, Monitor, Night Shift, Voodoo Dolly
More women in punk rock please!
Fierce Goth Queen. 3.5 stars, rounding up - the first two songs are Viridian staples. Monitor and Arabian Knights are good too.
love its early the cure vibes
There’s something so sinister and irresistible about this sound. I’ve heard ot about this band but admittedly haven’t heard very much. It’s a really intriguing listen – with very haunting vocal work from Siouxsie Soux. I can totally get behind this dark, brooding vibe as a fan of heavier sounding music. They really captured the sound they were going for - and I find it very unique. Top picks: Spellbound, Monitor, Night Shift, Sit In My Heart.
7/10 Really strong start to the album, with very cool post-punk tracks. Somewhere around the 4/5ths mark it begins to drag and Voodoo Folly is garbage, but overall I'm glad I heard this
The punk/garage/new wave band persists with a driving and anxious record that's still obviously related to everything from the Sex Pistols and Ramones to Talking Heads and David Bowie. This is an absolutely excellent example of what you could record in the 80's, using new tech (largely guitar effects) and also a DIY ethic. It's real dark but you can still hear its relationship with earlier songs like 'Hong Kong Garden'. There are a lot of good tunes ('Spellbound', 'Into The Light') but 'Monitor really sounds like it was recorded ten or twenty years later. Siouxsie and this album's guitar player (John McGeoch) really innovated, here. The one knock I have on this is that it can drone a little bit. 'Arabian Knights' sounded a little bit stuck to me, in the vocal melody department, and 'Night Shift's closing bars repeat a few too many times. The melodic interest in Siouxsie & The Banshees' work primarily comes from the guitar, I would say. She's an absolute champ of the alternative music scene -- she inspired a lot of early goths, she smashed into a pretty male-dominated scene and she's been a strong performer for more decades than I've lived -- but she's not the world's most interesting writer of melodies. That means that we need to give a lot of credit to the Banshees for keeping the songs compelling, and they do. In addition to Siouxsie Sioux and McGeoch, this one contains the steadfast Steven Severin on bass and the mononymic Budgie (Peter Clarke) thundering away on the drums. McGeoch genuinely influenced a generation or two of great guitar players (everyone from The Edge to Dave Navarro), despite only a two-album stint in The Banshees (though he did also play in Magazine, Visage and Public Image, LTD). Severin remains steady and fully integrated with whatever the band throws at him and Budgie genuinely thunders on the toms. Rhythmically, the album very smoothly shifts in feel and time throughout, often within songs, and is pretty uniformly groovable. The only things that hold this album back for me are the somewhat simplistic vocal melodies and the cold production. Mind you, cold and dark is the intentional vibe of this record and that's been influential. I'm sure Trent Reznor could tell you all about the importance of this album on NIN's sound and that's a worthy reason to spend time with Juju as any other. All the same, my relationship to the pseudo-genre of 'sad people making music in a cave' is not a happy one, so I'm going to ding it a little. I'll call it a 4.4. There's genius at work here and I'll probably buy this on vinyl, one day. It's not going to spark joy everytime, though -- much like psychedelic mushrooms, I've gotta be in a mood to ingest this without undue influence on my state of mind. Must listen, though? Yes.
5: Spellbound, Into The Light, Arabian Nights, Halloween, Night Shift 4: Monitor, Sin In My Heart, Head Cut 3: Voodoo Dolly Classic post-punk songs. Voodoo Dolly kind of sucks though.
Pretty cool stuff!
all im saying is if you dont like this album we got problems!
SIOUXSIE SIOUX I LOVE YOU I mean come on how good is that voice She has had better stuff in other albums but I’ve been meaning to listen to JuJu. Spellbound and Monitor were gas. B side was okay (Voodoo Dolly was a nice little treat)
Better than I remember. Inventive and bass-heavy, much like the early Cure. Siouxsie is a unique talent, kind of a foundational alternative rock disc, before that was a genre.
Straight 4/5,because is a chill album, but is not my type at all
Excellent vocals, fantastic melodies with lots of contrast. Repetitive at times. Fun and creative instruments. Brings back memories of music from Florence + The Machine. I quite enjoyed "Spellbound" with it's bright melody and heavy drum use. The album became very abstract towards the end which I wasn't opposed to, until the very last song "Voodoo Dolly".
Song structure can be a little repetitive and the instrumentation could just use a liiittle bit more depth at times. It’s pretty perfect aside from those two things, the lead vocals are pure ear candy and the overall vibe created by the instrumentation that is there overshadows the fact that the song writing is pretty simple. Very consistent.
I listened to a couple of tracks on repeat. Was nice to listen to while I cleaned. So…it was generally a good album for me.
A fun ride that at times feels exactly 80’s and at other times seems to be now classic sounds from the early 2000’s
One of the big ones in the 1980's new wave scene. And IMO it has aged well even though bit does sound very "period". I like it but the record as a whole is not on par with the likes of The Cure etc.
Original Last Dinner Party
Spellbound is a cracking start and the quality doesn't drop until the last two songs. Possibly their best album. Siouxsies voice oozes tension and all the band are on great form.
Harsh. And awesome.
Their sound is cool and these one had some interesting songs. 7/10
i always feel like i should like siouxsie more than i do. but anyway yes i did enjoy this. i am a music enjoyer
banger
Starts strong but so consistent, really well defined.
very pleasantly surprised, the atmosphere alone carries the entire record
Really enjoyed this. Could even be a 5 with more listens.
Gothic post punk
Every song is a masterclass in different ways to approach post-punk writing. They don't settle into a groove, constantly shifting and surprising with an energetic, erratic performance. Themes of the occult permeate every song, making them a cohesive whole, almost a concept album. The witch-y vibe gives Siouxsie and The Banshees an idiosyncratic, iconic sound.
This was by far the best "post punk" album, if you can even call it that, that I think we've had. It's aggressive, sounds unique, and doesn't stray in to navel gazing bullshit or just nonsensical meandering like so many of the others do. The singer's voice is well suited to the music and while they're a band with a nominal frontperson, it never really takes anything away from the instrumentalists. The last track (Voodoo Dolly) was a bit too long and overwrought for me but the rest of it is great. It's not something I'd listen to every day but I enjoyed it.
This is an album that shaped entire generations. Dark, moody and haunting, but not without some pure punk rock energy.
Surprisingly good :) 4.2
Cool album, you can litteraly tell that this is from the '80s. Awesome voice too
This was good, pretty dark and moody but upbeat, some interesting guitar sounds. Only real complaint is that the vocals are so high in the mix that they can be piercing at times when you listen at a volume where the instrumentation is ideal.
siouxie has a very unique singing voice really like halloween same with monitor night shift might be my favorite so far or monitor least fav voodoo dolly but its not TOOOO bad 7.3/10
Rock lots of ripping guitars. Overall its ok I would have to be in the mood for this
me gustó, tenía vibras bacanas
It's a good album, I liked almost every song, but only one got my attention. 3,5/5.
female vocals are great change from male guitar playing is solid don't really like the vibe though pretty good so far
OUI j'aime bieeeeeeeennn bonne ambiance
Crazy 80's, I see why they were a big influence on up and coming punk-goth bands. Wasn't into the scene but appreciate the talent.
I like this band
Favorite Song: Spellbound
Having seen Siouxsie & The Banshees live on this tour in Vancouver BC on October 8, 1981 there was a bit of a shock hearing these songs live in a smallish venue. The band is interesting and compelling live and the songs played live Arabian Knights, Spellbound, and Night Shift I recall fit perfectly into established songs from Join Hands and Kaleidoscope- particularly with Happy House and Christine. This album is a little patterned as Siouxsie makes use of repeated lyrics to accentuate the mood and drive the post punk songs forward. I’ve listened to this record repeatedly and for the most part this is still a great record that still holds up. Sure the repetition such as on Sin of My Heart gets a little weary but there is also a certain charm to the whole affair. It also evinces the bands desire to be more commercial in their approach recognizing that this particular combination of guitar sounds, motorik drums and Siouxsie’s screams are pretty enjoyable and engaging. Head Cut is a weaklyrical effort but the music is sharp and excellent with some weird noises and yips from Siouxsie. Voodoo Dolly is a bit of an outlier at over 7 minutes. In hindsight it’s a great way to finish the record. Very cabaret style. Solid affair overall. 4/5
I knew of Siouxie but hadn't heard anything. This is good! It sounds like something ahead of its time.
good album. ivebeen looiing for something like this
Alternative fun
What a concept: no hits, no songs I had heard before....just one really good song after another (up until the last track, which I didn't care for).
possibly my favorite siouxsie album. "spellbound" is certainly a top 5 siouxsie song and a perfect album opener
This is classic siouxsie .Great album.
Awesome female fronted post punk. This is what I wanted the Faithfull to sound like.
Fav song: Spellbound
Rating: 8.5 or 9/10 Favorite song(s): Review: Wow, I liked this a lot more than I expected to. I really appreciated the musicianship and was particularly captivated by the tone of the guitar throughout this album. This isn’t a style of music I usually listen to, though I do love the Cure. I think I thought Siouxsie and The Banshees was a little punkier than it actually is. Whatever expectations I had, it certainly surpassed them. I could actually see myself listening to this record again, which was surprising for me. I definitely understand why Siouxsie is so respected and considered so influential now. Listen again?: Yes
Hard to attribute a category to this kind of music
GREATTTT. Love this album. I definitely have a few favourites but every song is a banger - no skips. Thank you Siouxsie Sioux! Big fan of that guitar sound and the overall ambience of this album. Sick.
I love quite a lot about this album, it has such a clearly defined feel. It works well as a cohesive unit, and even though I find some songs repetitive I think each song has its own niche "Spellbound" is pretty fun, I definitely think it's the strongest song of its ilk on the album. "Arabian Knights" is just some wonderful songwriting and maybe my favourite on the album, very driving bass. Similarly "Sin In My Heart" is again very driven: I appreciate these kinds of songs "Monitor" is a cool sound, though the backing vocalists sound like ghosts on a rollercoaster Siouxie keeps reminding me what song I'm listening to which is nice
good 👍
Love the sound of this album. I have some sentimental attachment to this album but I also just think it's really solid I like Arabian Knights a lot, but Monitor and ofc Spellbound are up there too. I don't listen to a lot of this kind of music but something about this album just scratches an itch in my brain
Grungy jefferson airplane. Notable songs: Into the light,
Never heard of the band before, but this is pretty cool! This is the kind of album I was hoping to discover through this project.
Interesting, needs a 2nd listen to get
I enjoyed this one a lot more than 'The Scream'. Interesting off-kilter guitar work, great mood and atmosphere, and some of Siouxsie's most interesting vocals.
Wow, this was great! I had really only heard of them, and recently heard the cover Garbage did of Cities in Dust, so heard the original after that. But ya, for being 1981 this surprised me for sure. Post punk it says, that lines up, and maybe REM was even inspired by some of this jangle rock?
You know it gets better with time
i liked its vibe
Bien bien punky. Puede ser un poco repetitivo
Hell yeah juju
I listened to this album while I was sewing a creature! I think this album and the people who created it would greatly support that notion. I listened to one of the tracks through my phone speakers and I wasn't that into it. While working on my creature I was wearing headphones and I really liked it. Goes to show you how much phone speakers are BUTT!!! I really liked almost every song in this album it had a really fun vibe to it. I think this is considered goth music and honestly I've never considered myself the BIGGEST fan of it because my claim was that it all kind of sounded alike. This will be anyone's claim towards a style of music they are not drawn to or do not like. It was ill-educated. Now I consider myself a fan of at least parts of gothic music. Yay!
S and the B's was a band I knew of but never listened to during high school. They were from just before my time ... some of my older brother's cooler friends liked them. I have long had a sense that they were more important to the quickly evolving post-punk scene in real time than for any recordings they left behind. In other words, influential in a way that the albums will never really capture. And listening to this, I thought, maybe they were a powerful live act. In terms of, why some think of them as a major band and others of us barely know them. Maybe they just didn't have enough hit singles or signature songs to resonate in later decades. Anyway ... first time listening to one of their albums. I was not feeling it until I was (Monitor -- that song is really good. Gets really good. It takes off in its second half). Then I started digging Sin In My Heart, Voodoo Dolly, Spellbound 12"mix, Fireworks ... and next thing I knew I was listening to it all again. Second time around, I liked Spellbound (regular mix), Arabian Knights, Head Cut ... and it all seemed to work for me. So much of my listening in high school was by chance -- what I happened to find and give a try that was priced at $1.99 - $3.99 in the used lp's. As a result, lots of what I listened to was a bit older. I went through a phase where I listened to a solid amount of Ultravox (Vienna and the albums before it, which are different, more akin to Gary Numan, Devo, etc.). If I had acquired this album then, I would have really liked it. As it stands, there is not a lot of space in my life for synth rock for disaffected young people. Glad I listened to it, though. An empty spot on my music map has been filled in.
I really, really love the vibes Siouxsie and the Banshees are putting out in Juju. Their debut album, The Scream, missed the mark for me because it was too abrasive and coarse, but in Juju, they focused and refined their style. They still have an abrasive sound in Juju, but it isn't as rough and they targeted a gothic rock sound while remaining post-punk. The song titles, lyrics, and atmosphere are dynamite, so it's no wonder Siouxsie is considered a gothic pioneer.
i know that voice just not from where, yet.....
I spent yesterday writing a poem about the Moon. It was dark and introspective. That work was still on my mind today as I listened to this album. It's sometimes rare for an album to sound exactly like I expected it to based on title and cover art alone:Siouxsie and the Banshees' Juju is one of those albums. I was painted a picture of something heavy, feminine, and sprawling; I would say I got exactly what was advertised, and then some. This album builds a strong emo atmosphere, though with a touch more levity and whimsy than something like The Cure's Pornography did. The drums sound massive and hollow, reverberating through the mix, alongside a droning ambience which sounds like a distorted guitar tone. These elements combine with Siouxsie's expressive alto-range vocals to create a singular atmosphere which is the strongest appeal of this album. While I strongly prefer the moments where the songs kick into a bit of a heavier gear, finding less to grab into with the lighter tracks, I still appreciate the dark expression which is Juju. Highlights: Spellbound, Into The Light, Monitor, Night Shift, Sin In My Heart, Voodoo Dolly
A really great album, the first two songs directly catch your attention, the chord progression and the drumming on Into the Light is really really good. A very nice discovery. Favorite Songs: Spellbound ; Into the Light
Good energy. Really enjoy the percussion. I’m not a huge fan of the timbre of her voice, which lends a goth edge to it all, but that’s just my personal preference. Definite throwback that captures the time.
#81/1001 🇬🇧 🖤🦇 I have goth sensibilities but have never been good at wearing black. I only have one Siouxsie record, and its not this one. After listening to it today it's definitely one that i'm annoyed that i haven't checked out before. The first 4 tracks are just relentless and brilliant. Side 2 starts a bit more measured with Night Shift, this builds and builds into a really atmospheric number. Its the sound of a producer getting the absolute best out of the band. Loved everything about it, the layered guitar sound, the tricky drum fills and of course Souxsie's vocals. Loved it, loved it. Best tracks: Spellbound, Into The Light, Arabian Knights, Night Shift.
Surprisingly solid all the way through. I expected moodier Goth mysticism, but was rewarded with something much heavier. Further listening is certainly warranted in this case.
Really oriental vibes. Great Choise to listen something fresh
Wow, this was an unexpected surprise. Of course, I’ve heard of Siouxsie and the Banshees, but I’ve never listened to any of their music. This album is a post-punk/goth rock gem. Siouxsie has the perfect voice to match the spooky, haunted aesthetic. The music is almost trance-like, as if they’re casting a spell. The drummer is excellent, and I love the tribal drum fills that pop in unexpectedly. This whole album is a mood. I often get annoyed with this project because there are so many bad albums, but this one reminds me why it’s worthwhile to keep going.
Spellbound might be the coolest song ever written. This is such a banger album. Its so witchy and sexy and goth and it just makes me want to be in a club in eyeliner. The drumming, the singing, and the guitar are some of the best ever out to tape. Lyrically, its a bit weaker than the other albums on this list, but its still an absolute riot. 3.9
Pretty good. Some songs I wasn't digging her voice too much. Recognized and enjoyed Spellbound!
Heerlijk.
sp00ky.
I’ve never listened to a record by Siouxsie and the Banshees before. This was a nice introduction to their music. I felt like I was immersed in an episode of TOTP2, but in a good way. I feel like I can get lost in these songs, perhaps even more so if I was to partake in some kind of smokable substance. The guitar riffs are captivating and Siouxsie’s voice keep you listening right to the very end of each track. I’m going to give this four out of five. Bumped up by one as there’s just something more to this when you’re listening to it in a dark room… Standout track - Monitor
Pre-The Cure with its uneasy, eerie sound. Reminds me of 90s alt-rock, specifically "Night Shift" with its guitar playing and loud drums. Sticks to a vibe for sure (3.5-4).
If I listened to this at night on Halloween, 5 stars probably, but as it is now mid-March and I listened to this at noon with the sun shining in, I'll have to give this a 4 star rating. It's what I'm feelin. But I do respect it. All about timing & place I guess...
Am familiar with the band but never listened to an album by them. I really like the dark/mysterious vibes. Very nice
Goth rock goodness. Will return.
Nice, I like this one.
Atmospheric, moody, genre defining. Love it
I love listening to these old albums and hearing the original versions of modern songs that either are reinterpretations or samples it took me a minute to realize Spellbound inspired Abracabra
For a 45 year old record, this sounds like something that could have came out this year. You can see the influence on a lot of the female lead hard rockers out now like Wet Leg and Amyl & The Sniffers. The guitar tone on the opening track Spellbound is phenominal. Night Shift is a banger. Will be coming back to this one.
Even the misses had pretty great bass/drums. Spellbound/Night Shift the best
I love that they made a choice with the general sound of this album. Super halloweeny and fun for a lot of the songs. The vocalists timbre isn’t my personal taste, but I fuck with it. That’s like a 4/5
Another day, another 1980s British new wave album... though this one at least has a female singer. It also has a gothic bent to it, which makes it an interesting coincidence that I got it on Friday the 13th. It sounds pretty much exactly like you'd expect it to sound. The singer is tolerable but not great, and the lyrics are usually pretty mediocre explorations of supernatural themes. Some of the songs have good hooks to them, but none of them are truly great songs. There are plenty of good songs and some mediocre ones, which ultimately results in a pretty good, though not great, album. This grew on me the further I got into it, as if the better songs were on the second side. However, the last track was pretty tough to listen to, though I've had worse come from the generator on that front. I won't call it a great album, but it is one of the better new wave offerings of the list, and is far better than yesterday's album(Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret by Soft Cell, coincidentally also from 1981).
So rare to hear a female voice on this list. Also a rare occasion to get an album that I already know (almost in its entirety). It starts at 5 stars, but for some reason along the way 4 stars feel more fitting. I love her voice, but the instrumentals kinda sound the same in a few places. I think that's what's making me feel it doesn't deserve 5 stars. Great album, though not perfect. I prefer Tinderbox honestly.
Juju Spellbound: 4.6 Into the light: 4.3 Arabian knights: 4.1 Halloween: 4 Monitor: 4.3 Night shift: 4.5 Sin in my heart: 4 Head cut: 4.2 Vodoo dolly: 4.0 4.22/5 hyponotic
Some strong songs and enough weirdness.
I am here and I am listening, it's all thundering. I imagine how it would have all been for Lucy and Dan, this kind of darkness, a cosiness to it. Same with the Cure, each to each eternally young and walking home. Makes me feel small and scared in some ways, through having grown through. I find the thunder interesting. I wonder about it all.
Weird in a great way. Seems like this would’ve influenced a lot of modern music I like.
its pretty good even if not my taste
It’s a muddy, claustrophobic sound but some bangers lurk beneath.
This album is much better than the The Scream. Really like the discordant guitar work especially. It creates a really haunting atmosphere. Most importantly the songs are bloody brilliant.
Lowkey shadowy.
Ok this was a surprise. My only real exposure to Siouxsie is the "Marie Antoinette" soundtrack, and hearing "Peekaboo" on the radio a few times. This was great fun. It's exciting and invigorating unlike many post-punk albums I know of. Three things really stand out for me. * Siouxsie isn't much of a singer and isn't great at writing melodies BUT she has a unique voice and approach, and is an incredible frontwoman. * The drumming is exceptional. I loved the drum parts on this record and thought his execution was fantastic. * The guitar player is out of this world. He sounds absolutely modern to me, not someone from 45 years ago. The entire A side is a showcase for this guy, with "Monitor" especially blowing me away. Wow. Like many of the records from this time, the band seemed to run out of ideas by the end, but overall this was a dynamic record full of great songs and stellar performances. A very strong FOUR STARS
tearing into this album without having heard a single one of the songs before felt like christmas morning. favorite track is Into The Light, Monitor is also dope, and Voodoo Dolly is a very cool outro. one or two more definite bangers would bump it up to a perfect score easy. very strong 4
Rating: 9/10 An early gothic rock achievement and an album I love a lot, the first song is a good indication of the kind of sound Juju provides, which is spellbinding. The band gives a dark and haunting performance in these songs led by Siouxsie's vocals, a highlight of the record, singing a lot of really strange lyrics. I think almost every song on here is great, my least favorite being Head Cut. Voodoo Dolly is a weird one but gets pretty interesting at the end making for a good closer. All around the B side is little weaker than A, that first few tracks run is fantastic. Spellbound is absolutely an all-timer for punk/rock hits but my favorite is actually Monitor.
Super sick. Another success story of the full album living up to the one or two hits I've heard before. Checks most of my "great album" boxes, sets a great tone and really just knows what it's going for 8.2/10
A delightful post-punk treat. As always when listening to Siouxsie Sioux, I am filled with a particularly depressed form of happiness, or a particularly happy form of depression. Who's to say? I just know John McGeoch’s guitar tone on this album is cool as shit.
This album came into existence when a bargain bin “haunted house sound effects” record got struck by lightning at midnight. Next Halloween, I’m choosing “trick” and teepeeing the homes of anyone that gives this below a 2
This was spooky and really cool. I loved it. 7/10
Favourite Songs: Monitor Night Shift Sin In My Heart
low 4
Very close to being a 5... I just think there are better albums in this genre. Still very good.
overall, very good listen, but not a repeat album for me! It’s very interesting —- the main singer’s voice is incredible and very dynamic! They play a lot with different rhythms and textures here! I think there’s not many songs to really latch on to (ie: that I find catchy) other than spellbound! But I think overall it’s really cohesive and such a rollercoaster of an album!
This album made me an Emo in big 2026. Not complaining, it was just a marvelous experience.
This album was an intriguing listen! I really enjoyed the brooding and intense, but overall clean sound and balance of the band. The vocals had what I’d call a “searing” quality or tone that I’m a big fan of! Turns out I’m a sucker for British bands with a goth sound and dark lyrical content. 🤷♀️ Diving into stand-out songs, of course Spellbound and Into the Light great, but the songs that really had my attention were Arabian Nights, Halloween, Night Shift, and Sin In My Heart. Arabian Nights and Sin In My Heart will be repeat listens for me and Halloween is going on my playlist for October! I was disturbed by the lyrics of Night Shift so I looked further into it, and it sets the tone of the Yorkshire Ripper’s reign of terror in the late 70s. I’m a “Crime Junkie” and “Murderino” so hearing a song depict the effects of an infamous serial killer earns bonus points for me!
AL FIN UNA MUJER. LO AMÉ
Hot
She has such a great voice
More enjoyable than most albums on this list. So rounding 3.5 up.
This is a really cool album, very moody. Unfortunately I listened to it in outside in the sun, which is the completely wrong way of listening to it.
Never listened to a Siouxsie record all the way through. Definitely on the short list of icons that I should have heard sooner. Never realized how similar she sounded to Patti Smith. One of my favorite “discoveries” of this series.
as far as post punk goes this was pretty good, really enjoyed spellbound and monitor
Some brilliant stuff ("Spellbound", "Into the light", "Halloween") and some other tracks like "Voodoo Dolly" which become a bit hard to listen to.
Great album! I've never heard any song from the band and it was a pleasant surprise.
First time I’ve listened to a full Siouxsie album, it’s so cool! Extremely of its time in the best way. Moody, chorus bass, chorus everything, reverb everywhere. Killer vocals from Souxsie Soux, and they’re all catchy songs in their gothic ways. Spellbound is a killer opening track. 4.5/5.0 Best Song: Monitor / Spellbound Best Song:
Didn't expect to enjoy the album this much. It's very good.
good album, decent grooves and vocals
Dark wave from the dark 80s, nice finding.
Arabian Knights
Very good, will revisit
I had to listen to this twice, mostly as I really liked it but wasn't sure how much. It was a lot, but not quite to make it a 5. Spellbound, Sin in My Heart, Arabian Knights, Into the Light... All great. Will explore more. I'd i only heard about two Siouxsie sounds before and one was a Beatles cover. She can be forgiven for hanging around in with the Sex Pistols.
Top Track: Into The Light
- gothic punk? hell yeah! the vocalist looks sick as hell and the music is very textile and dark, atmospheric. feeling like wednesday adamms. super many textures for percussion and tones for guitar. Ghosts and ghouls and all. Bit weird cos they’re post rock gothic punk, but very cool songs for sure, and some cool ass vocals that stretch out. Kind of trippy, no? Anyways, happy halloween, and good night.
Great goth album, got some nice punk/noise elements sprinkled in. Fav Song: Monitor
Spellbound - 4/5 Into The Light - 4.5/5 Arabian Knights - 4.5/5 Halloween - 4/5 Monitor - 4/5 Night Shift - 3/5 Sin In My Heart - 3/5 Head Cut - 4/5 Voodoo Dolly - 3.5/5 Spellbound - 12" Mix - 3/5 Arabian Knights - 12" Vocoder Mix - 4/5 Fireworks - 12" Nigel Gray Mix - 4/5
I love Depeche Mode. It was cool to hear one of the main bands that influenced them. Spooky punk. Nice.
Grata surpresa
low-mid 4.5
Yes! Great album, and comes straight in at the most known banger for song 1
I just know the moshpit for Monitor would go crazy
okay i like it but a little outside what i'd typ listen to favorite song: fireworks
7/10
Good stuff
This was a great listen - it felt retro in a good way!
liked it more than i thought i would
Very good album. The darker vibes and lyrics hit so good.
4/5 God there's so much I can say about this album, but knowing that it's the witchiest, most gothic album Siouxsie and the Banshees made, it's one of my favourites easily. I love the darker tone that this album takes as opposed to the rest of their discography, and as a goth this is some good juju. My favourites are Spellbound and Voodoo Dolly.
Dope. 4/5
Juju really worked for me. It feels progressive for its time, rooted in punk but clearly moving into something darker and more alternative. I loved the atmosphere and how confident it sounds as a full album. A strong 1980s listen that still feels sharp and interesting. 4 stars
It's different but I enjoyed it.
love it
Banger intro that leads into my favorite song on the album, Into The Light. It's an underrated and creative riff in my opinion, and its atmosphere perfectly swells into the next song, Arabian Nights. It unfortunately kinda drags, after this though. But it has an awesome front half.
love love love
Dark and moody, this album feels ahead of its time and very well done. Reminds me of 1980's post apocalyptic sci-fi. You've got to be in the right mood, bit really hits the spot if you are.
Wow. This was great. Love a lady rocker. Didn’t love Voodoo Dolly, but the whole album is worth additional attention.
3.5/5. Had some really strong songs such as spellbound, Halloween, monitor and night shift. Some solid theming and pretty fun instrumentals. I understand a good album without it being my full cup of tea :3
This album has one of the best opening tracks of all time and the soundwork is supurb I'll have this sit at an 8.5
Really liked it and I had heard more songs on this than I thought I had. I'm prone to really enjoy this genre. Loved the production, writing and vocals.
Very cool!
Great.
Almost a precursor to Cocteau twins
Such a classic! Love this album, love this style. Such a pioneer for the genre. I love Siouxsie's voice. "Spellbound" will always be a favorite, but "Monitor" jumped up in my book after this listen. Recommended listening for anyone inclined to the darkside.
I really liked the sound of this album
A fantastic album. Exemplary vibes.
8/10
The riffs and vocals are great together, and the dark gothic atmosphere is also well conveyed. I liked it quite a bit, but I doubt I'll listen to it again. Rate 7/10
3rd listen, still surprises me that this is 1981 3.5
Honestly this is a very good album. I will likely re listen to it. It is good top to bottom 8/10
Very good, better than previous albums on the list, more gritty and less ethereal
Classic emo librarian vibe
very high 4
I liked this way more than I thought I would. My first dip into "punk". Standouts for me were: "Arabian Knights", "Halloween", and "Monitor". 4/5
This is right from my favorite era of music in my youth. I loved the tribal feeling of the drums. I like the compositions. Her voice. Just liked it.
Absolutely wonderful. Brilliant voice
The gothic instrumentation contrasts wonderfully with Siouxsie's vocals which makes a wonderful record
