Reviews (page 2 of 7)
I'm 20 years too old for this
Not really the type of music I listen to. I gave it a go, but it was quite painful. On par with Taylor Swift for me so. Also literally all the lyrics are about sex it's not very inspiring...
I FUCKING LOVE THIS ALBUM!!! Full stop. Thank you for allowing me to revisit this, top of bottom, start to finish, no skips. Start to finish, beautiful flow, amazing cadence, layered with stories 100/10!
Just so good, Loved the cuts to a monologue between each song, it flowed really well. The reclamation of sexuality as a thesis was a great way to focus the album and I loved the balance of humor throughout. Also just fantastic to listen to outright
Usually not a fan of horny music but this shit does bang
you guys reviewing this are so old... This absolutely slaps!
Loved this play on the Canterbury Tales where you hear a woman’s own words and then the song inspired by them. Unique and well done songs.
I loved it - this album has something that the genre have been missing for a while, so much personality and power, plus its own sound. It clearly takes some inspiration from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill but in a way that feels like a tribute rather than an attempt to copy it. I've listened to it twice now and there will be more.
WOW WOW WOW! Favorite track : Pick up your feelings
Lyndsie told me to listen to this back in 2022 when she was listening to this a lot (I’d heard a good chunk of this already because of her) & never did. Turns out my wife knows my tastes pretty dang well. Loved all this.
OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GODDDDDDD one of my all time favorite albums being recommended by this extensive list. First album from the 21st century too. An absolute masterpiece of R&B and storytelling.
The year it came out, it was one of my favorites
A really cool blend of genre, style, and an incredible voice
YUH. vocals are so damn good
Interesting song presentation with samples from different perspectives. Really liked this one
What a stunning album! i added two songs of it on my black music playlist! the vocals are amazing, jazmine was on fire here!
I liked this album a lot! Sexy, smart, deep as all hell. Not a bad moment. Even the interludes were like music. Just bopping!
It seems I might be in the minority of people who have listened to this album via the project, because I really like it. I like everything about it, from the premise to the execution, and even if I didn't need to listen to it before I die, I'm glad I did. Sure, there are a couple of tracks on here that could do with some polish, and much of the spoken interlude material is arguably unecessary, but that didn't put me off enough to bar the album from my Tidal library.
## In-Depth Review of *Heaux Tales* by Jazmine Sullivan Jazmine Sullivan’s *Heaux Tales* is a landmark R&B project that fuses raw storytelling, powerful vocals, and contemporary production to deliver a nuanced exploration of Black womanhood, sexuality, vulnerability, and empowerment. Released in January 2021 after a six-year hiatus, the album immediately resonated with critics and listeners, debuting at No. 1 on the R&B Albums chart and earning widespread acclaim for its honesty and artistry[1][2]. --- ## **Lyrics** Sullivan’s songwriting on *Heaux Tales* is unflinchingly direct, intimate, and conversational. The lyrics tackle themes of love, lust, insecurity, betrayal, and the pursuit of self-worth, often through the lens of Black women’s lived experiences[3][2]. The album’s structure is unique: songs are interspersed with spoken-word interludes—real-life tales from Sullivan’s friends and family—which serve as both narrative bridges and thematic deep-dives[4][5]. - **“Bodies (Intro)”** sets the tone, with Sullivan’s internal monologue reflecting on a night of excess and regret, questioning her choices and searching for accountability: > “I keep on piling on bodies, on bodies, on bodies / Yeah you getting sloppy, girl / Gotta stop getting fucked up”[6][7]. - **“Pick Up Your Feelings”** is a biting, self-assured anthem about reclaiming power after a breakup, blending clever wordplay with emotional candor. - **“Girl Like Me” (feat. H.E.R.)** explores the insecurity and self-doubt that can follow heartbreak, interrogating societal standards and the idea that “hoes be winning”[7]. The interludes—such as “Antoinette’s Tale,” “Ari’s Tale,” and “Amanda’s Tale”—offer candid, unfiltered perspectives on sex, relationships, and self-image, giving the album a communal, confessional quality[5][2]. Rather than sensationalizing or judging, Sullivan’s lyrics humanize her subjects, presenting their stories with empathy and complexity[4][3]. --- ## **Music and Production** Musically, *Heaux Tales* is rooted in contemporary R&B but incorporates elements of soul, hip-hop, and gospel. The production is understated yet sophisticated, allowing Sullivan’s vocals and storytelling to remain front and center[8][7]. Producers like Key Wane, DZL, Cardiak & Wu10, J Mo, Dev Hynes, Dave “Pop” Watson, Dilemma, JoeLogic & Gee, and Bongo ByTheWay contribute to a cohesive yet varied soundscape[5]. - **Instrumentation** is often sparse, with warm keys, subtle basslines, and crisp percussion providing a modern, moody backdrop. - **Vocal arrangements** are a highlight: Sullivan’s voice is rich, expressive, and technically masterful, moving effortlessly from soulful belts to delicate runs. - **Collaborations** with artists like H.E.R., Anderson .Paak, and Ari Lennox add texture and variety, with each guest complementing Sullivan’s style rather than overshadowing it[5]. Notably, the album’s production avoids overcomplication, instead trusting the strength of the songwriting and vocal performances to carry the emotional weight[8]. --- ## **Themes** *Heaux Tales* is a concept album that interrogates the “good girl/bad girl” dichotomy and the ways in which women—particularly Black women—navigate sexuality, agency, and societal judgment[3][2][7]. The project is as much about the stories of “hoes” as it is about the people affected by those labels, challenging the stigma and double standards that persist in both mainstream culture and within Black communities. **Key Themes:** - **Sexual agency and empowerment:** Sullivan and her collaborators reclaim narratives around female sexuality, refusing to be shamed for desire or experience. - **Vulnerability and insecurity:** The album does not shy away from the pain and confusion that can accompany relationships, self-doubt, and societal pressure. - **Materialism and survival:** Songs like “Pricetags” explore the intersection of money, love, and self-worth, reflecting on the ways women may seek security or validation. - **Solidarity and sisterhood:** The inclusion of multiple voices—through both song and interlude—creates a sense of community and shared experience, emphasizing that these stories are not isolated but part of a broader tapestry[3][2][7]. --- ## **Influence and Impact** *Heaux Tales* has been widely recognized as a classic work of Black feminism, giving voice to experiences often marginalized or misunderstood in mainstream music[3][2]. By centering the stories of Black women and presenting them with nuance and honesty, Sullivan has become a new vanguard of feminist storytelling in R&B. The album’s influence extends beyond its lyrical content: - It has inspired a wave of artists to embrace vulnerability and authenticity in their music. - The project’s format—blending songs with spoken-word interludes—has been emulated by other artists seeking to create more immersive, narrative-driven albums. - *Heaux Tales* has contributed to broader conversations about respectability politics, sexual liberation, and the importance of representation in music[3][2][7]. Commercially, the album’s success—topping R&B charts and earning critical accolades—demonstrates the demand for music that speaks honestly to the complexities of modern womanhood[1]. --- ## **Pros and Cons** | Pros | Cons | |------|------| | Unparalleled vocal performances: Sullivan’s voice is both technically impressive and emotionally resonant[7][8]. | Some listeners may find the interludes disrupt the album’s musical flow, preferring more traditional song structures[4]. | | Honest, relatable songwriting: The lyrics are raw, vulnerable, and deeply human, offering perspectives rarely heard in mainstream R&B[4][3][2]. | At just over 32 minutes, the album’s brevity may leave some wanting more, especially given the depth of the stories presented[4]. | | Cohesive concept: The integration of spoken-word tales with songs creates a rich, narrative-driven experience[5][7]. | The understated production, while effective, may not appeal to those seeking more energetic or experimental musical arrangements[8]. | | Innovative format: The use of real women’s stories as interludes sets a new standard for authenticity and narrative in music[3][2]. | The album’s focus on the specific experiences of Black women, while a strength, may feel less accessible to listeners unfamiliar with those contexts (though this is arguably intentional and necessary)[3]. | | Social and cultural impact: *Heaux Tales* has sparked important conversations about sexuality, feminism, and respectability politics in the Black community and beyond[3][2][7]. | Some critics have noted that the album’s title may be misleading, as the content is less about “ho tales” in the sensational sense and more about real-life struggles and triumphs[4]. | --- ## **Conclusion** *Heaux Tales* is a masterclass in modern R&B: it is bold, vulnerable, and fiercely honest, balancing personal confession with universal resonance. Jazmine Sullivan’s ability to channel her own experiences—and those of her peers—into a cohesive, compelling narrative is unmatched. The album’s strengths lie in its lyrical depth, vocal excellence, and innovative structure, making it a touchstone for both feminist music and contemporary soul. While its brevity and reliance on interludes may not appeal to every listener, these elements are integral to the album’s vision: a tapestry of stories, woven together by a singular, powerful voice determined to speak truth to power. In doing so, Sullivan has not only redefined her own artistry but has set a new benchmark for what R&B—and music at large—can achieve when it dares to be both vulnerable and unapologetically real.
Empowering lyrics, and nice melodies.
i listened to it twice in a row and then the deluxe edition. can't remember the last time i had an album like that.
I'm floored. This is an absolutely outstanding album. What an amazing exploration of modern female sexuality, crafted with a unique interview style that flushes out each story in the subsequent track. And not just that, but every track is so smooth and hooky as hell. Bodies is amazing opening track (which will be stuck in my head for the foreseeable future), and Girl Like Me is the perfect closer. Honestly, I have no complaints and will likely buy this vinyl. 5/5
Beyonce like r&b but a bit more musically nuanced than a usual pop/rnb album
3 days back to back of absolute bangers. Lost One was a top song in 2024 and I was not not okay
was not looking forward to this but surprisingly loved it!!
What a treat! Haven't listened to many Jazmine Sullivan songs before, and I was impressed. Some good hip hop and rnb songs. And the gimmick with the people telling a story between the songs stayed fresh and entertaining. Best song: Pick Up Your Feeling
heaux tales meaux tales
A Philly girl! Love her
I loved this album when it came out and listened to it pretty much nonstop during winter / spring of 2021 when it felt we were just starting to see the light at the end of the COVID tunnel. It still hits. So many great jams. I could do without the narrative intermissions, but this is a pretty perfect album IMO.
Thoughtful lyrics, lush production, coherent as a full album - a real work of art.
"THIS IS FUCKING FIRE" - Abraham Lincoln
Very good
Insecure introduced me to Jazmine Sullivan. Her voice is fire!! Feels like the future of R&B
Really great
This was amazing
Brilliant. Perfection. Progressive but human, incredible RnB.
This was a surprise gem. Judging a book by its cover I was not looking forward to it. Now that I’ve listened it’s unlikely I will ever listen to it again. But I’m really glad I listened to it. She has a powerful message and a powerful delivery. I love the device of different peoples tales tying in between songs. Really a great record to give a listen to (even if it’s the only time you end up listening to it).
I love a good sex-positive rnb rant. 4.
Modern classic in its genre. It’s dope to see the female pov of what guys usually brag about in songs: bachelor life, sleeping around, tricking off, etc. It’s most interesting when it turns bittersweet and she’s talking about how this is her lifestyle but she wants more and doesn’t know how to get more. Kind of relatable even as a guy.
Eu simplesmente estou apaixonado
5/5. A short and tight album (even the deluxe) with skits and interludes that flow with the track list and each full song is so memorable and well-written. Way more R&B and soul and Jazmine does have the soothing voice to match. I think there can be a disconnect to listen to a very direct and honest woman speak about sex, love, individuality, and vulnerability. She, or others, may say things in her skits that rub you the wrong way but they are not apologetic, they know what they want and you may not like them, but that's who they are. I would never want to be friends irl based on their morals but that does not take away her skill of an artist to be able to create amazing songs for each opinion. Best song: Pick up your feelings, Lost one, Hurt me so good
Ah so here we are, the very newest entry in the current version of the book, have been curious to see what this was, as I've never heard of it or her. If I was going to argue what other records from 2021 should be here I'd say Self Esteem (similar theme to this one really except if she was a white girl from Sheffield), Little Simz (not too far removed), Black Country New Road (English, so people would cry) and Floating Points (but this book doesn't acknowledge jazz exists after 1963), so yeah ok, Heaux Tales, let's see what's up. Starts strong, Pick Up Your Feelings is really good. RnB has improved so much from its nadir in the 90s. Not as keen on Put it Down or On it. Donna's Tale is funny. Price Tags is funny also, and an update to Destiny's 'Bills' which I always found annoying. Lost One is indeed gorgeous. She's got pipes, this one. And sings in lots of different styles. The Other Side is a fantastic slice of pop RnB with a yearningly aspirational chorus (even if it seems a pretty superficial dream). I am somewhat surprised how much I enjoyed this overall as it's not my thing generally, but great records surpass such self-imposed restrictions, and this does that.
Idk why but this album was really fun. I imagined Jazmine singing every song about me(straight-male) me. Beats and bars are really good too. Rounding up from a 4.5.
Wow... first time hearing this album it is a real journey that Lost One even had me in tears. Very honest and a full range of emotions are explored at times as emotionally raw as Elvis Costello. The music matches the stories told. This is an amazing fully realized concept album!
Loved this album when it was released!
Dug it. Bit preachy at times but good grooves
I think the frank discussions of sexuality on this are great. Sex and sexuality can be a topic that comes off as cheesy or forced, but I think having mini-confessionals before the track that they inform is a clever tactic that works really well. I think a song like "Lost One" gets a heavier punch hearing the source, as it were. For the first time on this list, I think this album comes across a little, very little underbaked. Aforementioned "Lost Ones" is fantastic, but I think it doesn't know how to properly end so it just... cuts out. Also, when you look at it, half of this album is, technically, interludes. It's a short record, but I would've wanted so much more. Regardless, I enjoyed it enough to call it a 4.5, rounding up cos Jazmine is from Philly. Favorite tracks: "Put It Down", "Lost One", "On It"
Bodies - a chill intro to an album. i like that we've slowed into RnB (4/5) Pick Up Your Feelings - i like this a lot. (5/5 talent) Put It Down - i used to listen and drive around to this kind of thing back in like 2018. (5/5 always a good drive) On It - this is very classic RnB. these are hit or miss for me. (3/5 it sounds good but it's a miss) Price Tags - women in RnB feel underrepresented. this fucks (5/5) Lost One - you can hear the inspiration from the early 00s throughout this. the development to this is great (5/5) The Other Side - it's so summer drive vibe. (5/5 it's just nice.) Girls Like Me - a very fitting ending to an album too (4/5) this album actually slapped a lot. maybe because it's the most recent album i've had but i thoroughly enjoyed listening to this. 5/5 the amount of skits are.. a lot but honestly it was pretty easy to ignore.
Fantastic!
cool
I am blown away. I love this concept and the execution.
Really compelling concept album/EP - some of it can seem light-hearted and silly ("Put it down"), but great production and writing throughout. It seems like a more complete and thoughtful piece of art than a lot of other albums on this list, and considering ititss technically an EP it doesn't overstay its welcome or stretch out unnecessarily. I really loved some of the production, notable cuts like "Lost One" and "The Other Side".
Perfection
Fantastic concept and performance, definitely derived from Lauryn Hill, but unique to the current time. A low 5, but a 5 nonetheless.
Really really good! Loved it!!!
Great album
A stunning voice and a powerful and dynamic album. 4.5/5
The grooves are Thicc. The spoken word interludes are a cool play on the form of the "concept" album work. The album is a deep dive on relationship dynamics and goes to some genuinely thought provoking and interesting places.
Love this. Voice is extraordinary. Lyrics great feminist views.
really enjoyed very good
Covered a surprising range of emotion compared to what I originally expected, and my main critique is that I would like to hear more. 9/10
I wrote a really long speil about this, how different experiences can be and how strange it is how much others seem to care about sex. I don’t know if it saved. I liked the talking parts between the songs. Especially the one where she talked about men not being able to handle that women are sexual beings.
I remember being in high school and my sister listening to her first album which is a classic in my book. Now this doesn’t quite rise to that level but that’s ok, I enjoyed this concept when it came out and it was nice to revisit the project. The vocals are elite and though I can’t identify with the content of it, I can still hear good song when it comes on. And there were a lot of good songs on here!
I understand the reason for the skits, but I'm honestly not really a fan of them in general. This album was no exception. I feel like they took away from the great singing performance by Sullivan. I feel like an album without the skits would have been better.
Pretty good neo soul
A very good album by an artist that I somehow have never heard of before this. I still don't like "skits", though.
Her voice is absolutely incredible. I thought that formatting the story of the album around a group chat it was really cool. It was an honest take on how sexuality can be both a power and a burden. The themes were raw and vulnerable. And also did I mention her vocals were insane????? My favorite songs were Pick Up Your Feelings and Price Tags.
I can mess with this i think
One day Malibu will be on this list and until then this Anderson Paak representation will work. This album is pretty good. I don't know that anything stuck out as a must return to but the production was fun, Jazmine is doing some crazy vocal runs and some of these songs are catchy as hell (and beautiful at times). Reading the reviews, this is another case of people completing this list and missing the whole point, you're supposed to listen to stuff you don't like and think about it. The "really... this is the same importance as Abbey Road?" comment really set me off, broaden your horizons man music is so cool it must be so miserable being stuck listening to music only released before 1975.
This was great! Super different than a lot of the other stuff I’ve listened to so far on this list (I guess it being so recent is a big reason why) so that bumps it up in my book. I normally don’t like skits in albums (maybe interludes would be a better term here), but I thought all the stories really added to the concept. 4/5.
Super fun - not my usual listening but I had a blast
Great album but not my vibe
Fresh sounding stuff, did seem like a natural evolution to modern hip hop. I’ll go 4
Great concept album first I was confused but great idea album great vocals everywhere even the features are amazing modern late drive rnb would i listen to the full album any time soon no but I might listen to a 1 or 2 songs 6.3/10
This was fun, the format with the stories and then the songs was a cool gimmick, I like r&b
I enjoyed this when I did the pitch from bracket thing so I have listened to it recently, I also think this is the latest album on the whole list. It’s good stuff
very, very pleasing sonically feels like a spiritual soundtrack to Euphoria S1-S2 and like all interviews from Hopeless Romantic Society compressed into thirty minutes unfortunately, a lot of the songs are location-locked for me, but i'd love to listen to it in full and in earnest one day
Not bad, not bad
Interesting concept, having someone tell their story and then having a song that relates to the story? R&B kinda putting me to sleep. 4/5.
Pretty good. Surprising inclusion on the list
Right away catchy beat. She’s preaching gospel song 2… PREACHHHH
Oh my god. Lighten up y’all. This album is great! So many people, specifically on this site, are writing it off completely for god-knows-what. It probably scares them. This is no raunchier than the classic Led Zeppelin songs, not any more blunt than cuts from Frank by Amy Winehouse. But this can’t be here? A black-led concept album talking explicitly about the agency (or lack thereof) that women have over their own bodies? Shut up. It’s not perfect, I wish the beats weren’t so minimal. They could have stronger instrumentation. But the vocal performances from everyone are just fantastic. Her singing is great, her chemistry with Lennox and her voice is perfect, I even love Anderson .Paak’s rap verse despite the fact that he is clearly trying to make the song about himself. Heaux Tales doesn’t overstay its welcome, and it doesn’t compromise its vision in the slightest. As of right now, it’s the most recent addition to the 1001 Album list. The recent additions always get the same treatment. The only difference between this and Microshift is that Microshift actually deserves the criticism. This doesn’t need any more hate from racist, sexist people.
Just what I needed Reminder to be Motivated for heauxitry
Another amazing R&B album.
lovely grooves and textures, strong vocals and lush harmonies
Confident, sexy, and occasionally pretty funny, there's some really excellent lyricism here.
Great R&B record
A smooth half hour of deeply impassioned R&B with a pitch perfect flow. I was particularly taken by the emotionally charged ballad Lost One and pop rap infused The Other Side. It has a lot to say about sexual politics and gave me an empathetic insight into Jazmine Sullivan’s experience, which is very different from my own.
Giving Jazmine Sullivan a high 4, not quite a 5 but it’s a really cohesive, conceptually tight, well executed sensual and smooth and engaging set of v 2010s R&B
R&B, hip-hop.
often guilty of reviewing the reviews on here, but jesus, you're all weird about sex! i'm sure many listeners claiming they have no way of relating to this album have had it, and if you haven't, you've wanted it, which gives you plenty to chew on regarding Heaux Tales. when it's not being had on this record, it's being desired, discussed, dismissed. which is, in my experience, like life! i'm not sure why we've collectively decided something so central to human experience isn't worth singing about especially when it's being sung like this, because good lord can Sullivan sing! she's got this agile, androgynous voice that bowls me over on pretty much every track. whether she's slipping into a kind of knotty, diaristic cadence on the opening track or belting through the closer, she always impresses. this does, to me, extend to the lyrics and stories. they're blunt, they're sexy, but they're layered, especially when you look at them across the record. i think the more straightforward tracks work well to show the absolute power sex can have over us, why it so complicates things, the high we're chasing - it makes the cynical use of sex on Price Tags richer, and the absence of connection on Lost Ones more devastating. the latter really deserves a mention - i was broken up with by the person i thought (and still, delusionally, graspingly think/hope) i would marry at the beginning of the year, for reasons completely my fault, so naturally this made me cry so hard i dropped a mug of tea all over my desk and had to tearfully, snifflingly clean off my laptop/phone/rolled-up Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie poster anyway! sex, love, power, self-worth - all essential, visceral parts of being alive, all worth writing about. can't wait to get back on this soapbox even more loudly when Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On comes around
Been waiting for this one to come up because I knew it was the most recently added album to the list, if I'm not mistaken? I think it's cool! I love this album a lot!
v cool!
Really, really loved this concept. I wish it had been a little longer though.
I laud the ideals of incorporating topics of feminism, sexuality, classism, and body-shaming among deeply in a RnB record . It just misses a little on the musical execution Marking it a 4 as it’s a relevant and important album as its an open, honest and profound look at sexuality from a female (black female) lens To me Musically it’s closer to a 2
It’s better then I expected it to be! I was surprised that I liked it so much to be honest.
Необычно для меня, но понравилось
I liked the opening, but the album started to lose me in the middle. I almost tapped out, but as I stuck with it I started to appreciate what she was trying to do. I still feel conflicted about what was being represented, but ultimately I think an attempt to show depth behind types of women who stereotyped and dismissed is a good thing. Loved songs like Pick Up Your Feelings and Lost One.
Loved the music.
This was great. Loved it.
i cant believe i had never heard this
Really nice breath of fresh air for this list (atleast in my rotation, I'm not totally sure how it works). I dig the production, the lyrics, the flow, it's all there for a really solid modern hip hop / rap album. It's funny, I tend to get pretty bored with typical rap tropes, like the "im the best", "sex sex sex pussy pussy pussy" stuff that you hear all the time, but I really like this album hearing a female singer sing (and talk) about sex and not really leaving anything back. It's refreshing, and a cool perspective. One downside is that I feel like there's not enough for me to really sink my teeth into. There's so many good ideas throughout, but sometimes I want to sit back and jam. "On It" is a great track with great blunt lyrics and a super nice groove but it's gone before I can really get into it. Quick math shows me that the first 10 songs average at only 2.3 minutes each.. that could be making me feel that way too.
2/3. Really enjoyed this album, and love the lyrics and message throughout. Gives real perspective and agency to women that we otherwise deny just because they don’t act the way men want them to. Great R&B grooves, solid features, and a great addition to the list.
Good music, too many talking tracks.
A very creative album exploring concepts of life and feminism, the was a great listen. The little stories leading into the songs were a great touch, and it didn't over stay its welcome. I didn't care for the second to last story + song, because yeah everyone would like to be rich without having to do anything - that's not interesting or special, but the rest were great.
The spoken word interludes were very reminiscent of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Listening to them back to back did however highlight that this album lacked the same depth and variety of tonality. That may be an unfair comparison but was what stuck in my mind. May revisit eventually.
Superb vocals, lyrics and vibe, just a little samey at times.
Incredible Range. Cycles of materialism, sexuality, heart break, personal insecurities wrapped into one. Some songs are nasty (complimentary) Lost One might be one of the greatest break up songs ever made
I think it’s a great deconstruction of modern dating and I like the beats and flows a lot. This is unique and I can see the Lauryn hill comparisons and I also hear Beyoncé. Lemonade really influenced everything but like I said modern music just has a different vibe and I like this the breathe work is also really good and added to the vibe. He put it down!!!!
I saw the global ratings on the site for this album and said “Get behind me ‘Heaux Tales’!” It’s a lush and very frank album about sex, relationships, and navigating everything in between. Well-sung and catchy. I guess I could see some of the explicit subject matter being divisive, but I remembered loving this when it first came out and I still love it now. A kind of “dead dove: do not eat” situation here maybe. “Lost One” is my personal highlight - it breaks my heart every time I hear it.
I can do with out the talking interludes. I like the songs a lot though. Although, I miss the days when R&B songs were sexy rather than sexual. I like the honesty on Price Tags and of course Anderson.Paak is awesome. I'm really liking this album (except for the chit chat). Two solid guest spots from Anderson.Paak and H.E.R. Maybe it's something to do with female empowerment with all the periods?
New to me although I see it was winning album of the year awards all over the place among the critics in 2021. I can see why. Feel like I'm not the target audience but some of those tracks are just brilliant - particularly The Other Side
God I love this album, every song is essential to it and even the interludes add to the narrative.
I’m not really an R&B guy, so I went in with low expectations. This ended up being surprisingly good. The production is smooth without being boring, and the songwriting feels honest instead of manufactured. What really stood out were the spoken word interludes. They felt candid and unfiltered, almost like overhearing a group chat. As a white dude who’s married with kids, it was interesting hearing dating, hookups, and everyday life from a Black female perspective in that raw way. It felt personal and real.
Usually albums like this written by 20 song writers don't do much for me but I'm a sucker for concept albums and there are some really good songs here.
This rocks. I've been listening to a lot of R&B rap lately, so this was right up my alley. (Especially Anderson .Paak)I love the lo-fi beats and movements of this. Its easy to groove with and get lost in. A lot of really cool pop songs, but also some fun blues inspired slow jams. The feminism and social aspects were also really cool and poignant.
This wasn’t on my radar, and I liked what I heard.
Second time listening to this album, still has hits. Definitely appreciated it more, than I did when I listened to it. She needs to come back with another album. Top songs: Lost one Pick up your feelings The Other side On it Girl like me Put it down
I was surprised to see this rated so low. Then I thought a little about the content, the person who it comes from, and the kind of people that vote here - and I realised it's not surprising, just disappointing. This is a decent record, shame so many won't give it a chance.
I loved this. It's a peak into a reality that I either willingly ignore or haven't experienced. Probably a bit of both. But, it is frank, and the songs are awesome. Kind of lo-fi hip-hop. Awesome backing beats. I like the discussion leading into a song dealing with that theme.
So surprised with this one! Not usually my thing whatsoever (and I am definetely not the target audience), but I really like this. Really smooth transitions & powerful theme's throughout. Singing was really good as well as the band too.
this was a fun album to listen to. love the female POV
About time for the sexual awakening of rhythm and blues/hip hop female America? I blush, thinking the music is catchy.
For her voice alone, this gets a 4. Really great production/arrangements as well though. Without over thinking it, amazing vibe record. Cool exploration of sexuality and power dynamics in relationships.
Never heard of it before. Sounds like modern version of Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Man I was loving this album until the last song. Pick up your feelings is the definite stand out
- erster Song 10/10: Stimme und Beat amazin - love wie persönlich sie ist; haha that dick spoke life into me - warum find ich das Album erst jetzt - love the message und generell wie das Album aufgebaut wurde - sehr guter switch drinnen
Looks like some incel energy at the top liked low reviews. “Hated it 10s in” just gives it away. Hate to see it. It’s a solid album, I’d prefer more of this than another 90s British rock album. Clear influence from Frank ocean to me.
A lot of these other reviews stink, like unwashed ass. What kind of moron thinks every single album on the list has to be equal to Abbey Road or DSOTM (WYWH is superior anyway)? You think all 1090 albums are going to be the exact same flawless masterpiece? This album is a great listen with fun if simple production. Maybe some of yall should take a step out of your dad's garage.
Better on each listen and has something real to say. Shame the reviews are terrible just cause it's just cause it's not actually shit Beatles clone from the 70s
good and very philadelphia
4/5
released 2021. heartfelt r&b album telling the untold stories of women, she gets her close friends to speak about owning sexuality and female empowerment as ‘tales’ between tracks songs i already knew: none songs i liked: pick up your feelings fun facts: she won the 2022 grammy award for best r&b album
I mean this was fun. I liked "Bodies - Intro" and saved "Antoinette's Tale" and "Girl Like Me (feat H.E.R.).
Well it was a little out of my usual taste but I think the on it track in this is quite a listen.
Also gay ladies?!
Can't deny the talent but as a middle aged white guy from Australia, I was very much not the target audience. So hight rated even though I'll never listen to it again.
Fav: Put It Down Least Fav: Lost One Some of the beats on this were amazing, I don’t get the low overall rating
Really taken by this! Completely unaware of it before today, even tho it’s one of the newer albums on the list. An intense, funny, sad, introspective, cutting, tuneful, soulful look at black women’s sexual lives. Just, like, six solid tracks with interludes. I liked all of it!
I’d never heard of Jazmine Sullivan, so this was a good discovery. I liked this album a lot - frank, funny and short enough that it’s never in danger of wearing out its welcome.
R&B
Reminiscent of Lauryn Hill
Pretty good.
pretty good, would never have listened to this
Woah pretty fun
not bad!!!
THIS ALBUM IS SOOO GOOD. Viva Female Sexual Empowerment! It directly counteracts the machismo energy put out into the universe with the release of KISS’s 1998 abusive album “Psycho Circus”. Someone must have broken Gene Simmons’ heart for him to put out such pointless trash. Jazmine Sullivan gives words to love, sex, lust, breakups, one night stands, and self worth that I don’t think I had found before hearing this record. It’s well written, it flows superbly well, and kept me riveted the entire hour. Will definitely be listening again, especially in times of heartbreak.
I went into this unfamiliar with Jazmine Sullivan’s work, and I was genuinely impressed. The album feels more like a conversation: raw, honest, and told unapologetically from a woman’s point of view. It explores sexual freedom, vulnerability, and the complexities of love and self-worth with striking confidence. Calling it a “concept album” makes perfect sense, as it plays like a narrative journey, weaving personal reflections and spoken interludes into something cohesive and powerful.
I liked how story driven it was, wouldn't put it on with someone else in the room, but really interesting listen. Music was deeply enjoyable, fun snippet-of-life voice memos.
This is actually pretty brilliant. The different perspectives and points of view are enlightening. It almost makes you understand and/or justify the way some of the worst types of people are the way they are. Very introspective and deep, all set to a neo-soul backdrop that is really top notch. I thoroughly enjoyed this.
An album that's been coming up frequently in recommended and Best of the 21st century lists in the last week, this is one that I tried at the time of release but I wasn't quite ready for. I think I was more prudish at the time, and this is definitely only for those that are more sexually open minded! It was a real treat listening to it and it's the first that I've listened to 3 or more times on the day specified (easy as the original work is only 32 mins, though I do recommend the deluxe which has no drop in qualify).
Maybe it's something to do with female empowerment with all the periods?
nuts to the haters, this was fun!
Beautiful album, I’d heard things about it but never checked it out before. Short and to the point - no bad tracks. Fave Tracks: Pick Up Your Feelings, Rashida’s Tale, Lost One, The Other Side 4.4/5
Solid listen. Makes some valid points about sexuality
Another cheaper version of Ms. Lauryn Hill to enter the list. The music is pretty cool though. Real vibes throughout with nice harmonics and an effortless flow.
r&beuty the last third of the album is magnificent, but lyrically the whole album is a bit not enough for me in terms of depths, yet it still very sensitive 4.5
Not one that I'd listen to regularly, but chill vibes!
Surprised to see such a recent album on here. I know I’m decidedly not the target audience for this album, but I’m glad I was able to listen in. The songs are great (despite some lyrics that leave more than a little to be desired), but I think overall, the “message” of the album becomes a little one-note and ultimately detracts from the high-level artistry and talent obviously on display. I feel like this could’ve been great, but came off as just ok. 4/5 Highlights: Bodies - Intro Pick Up Your Feelings Put It Down Last One Girl Like Me
A smooth rap album with a great flow despite the spoken parts. I was pleasantly surprised that it was released that recently.
Surprised by all the negativity here. Not usually my thing but I kinda dug this, for the most part. Also super short. 7/10
Nice album
Pleasant R&B album. A few too many intros, not enough songs, but it plays into the theme of each song exploring female sexuality in a different way.
"Heaux Tales" is the fourth studio album by American R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan. R&B and hip hop are the Wiki-listed genres. Yeah, much more R&B. The album was identified as a concept album, a successor to "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill." High praise to live up to. The album structure has six spoken word interludes followed by songs that fleshed them out as character studies. Themes include feminism, sexuality, classicism and body-shaming. The song had wide-spread critical acclaim. Commercially, it reached #4 in the US and #79 in the UK. The album opens with "Bodies." Definitely in the R&B category with a soulful vibe. Sullivan is telling herself to get it together as a girlfriend. The interlude "Antoinette's Tales" stresses women have to take ownership of their bodies. Both women and men should be blamed for so much stress being put on women's bodies. A hip hop beat anchors "Pick Up Your Feelings." Speaking of ownership, Sullivan's tells a guy she's had enough and he needs to pick up his own pieces. Anderson.Paak guests with Sullivan on "Price Tags." No, fooling around with the theme here; money keeps her p#^$y wet. Great rapping by Paak. The first single "Lost One" shifts the dynamic. An echoing acoustic guitar. She's lost her girlfriend by sleeping around on her. She's depressed and down. H.E.R guest with Sullivan on the closing song and ballad "Girl Like Me." Her man has left her for another women. Maybe she should change her appearance but she won't do this good girl shit. Great vocals. This album did have similarities to the Lauryn Hill album especially with the interludes and ensuing songs but is much shorter at 32 minutes and not such a wide scope. There are hip hop aspects with some of the beats and rapping but the majority of this album is R&B, soul and more chill. The stories are compelling and varied. She takes different perspectives and pokes at both men and women. Overall, this is a very good album. Anyone who is an R&B, soul or hip hop fan should find something to enjoy in this album.
cool to see a newer album on here!! good listen, very insightful and well-arranged
pedrada mais uma vez que o usuário médio desse site se prova um escrotinho de marca maior
ou, gostosim demais! super sexy, o r&b como espaço para mulheres negras falarem sobre sua sexualidade!! importante e chiquérrimo, bem feitim demais!
I was feeling a little uncomfortable with the sexual level of this album but was still receptive to its artistic style and quality of music, which is good. I was overall unsure until Lost One came on… wow… bare bones, brutal, vocally complex, and a heart breaking masterpiece. This song lead to overall more introspective second half of an album. The presence or true artistry propels this to a new level. She’s a mix of SZA, Beyoncé, Lizzo but much better than the last 2.
It’s hard to review music that isn’t your style, especially if you don’t have much exposure to that musics style. That being said, I didn’t hate this album. I thought it was well made and told an empowering story. It’s not my thing but I don’t feel like it deserves all the hate. It’s pretty good.
I’m totally down for some newer music on this list, but this doesn’t totally do it for me. I think there are better examples of the genre on this list, but there’s nothing here to dislike.
Fun - not sure why it's getting the hate. Maybe some people want to listen to the boring white guys sing folk music from 70s all the time. 4/5
Ooh, yes! I may be misremembering but I’m pretty sure Mr. Tabor recommended this one to me. Am I misremembering? Regardless, very nice stuff.
This was a revelation for me - an extraordinarily frank and smart hip hop album talking about life, sex and relationships from a woman’s perspective. Each song has a short spoken word section that introduces the themes and they are the polar opposite of the painful skits that are usually found on albums like this. The music is mainly down tempo with gorgeous vocal harmonies showcasing the lyrics. My only quibble is that this technically an EP rather than an album, but I’ve just seen that there’s a deluxe version that is immediately going on my playlist.
So good
A fresh R&B album, affected by Andy P's Midas touch!
Loved this when it first came out. Where is she now??
Didn't know anything about this - on first impression I really got into it. I know I'll be checking it out again.
I feel like my picks lately have been more r&b focused but maybe I'm just lucky and the random selection is trending more r&b lately. I know nothing about Jazmine Sullivan at all and have probably heard her name before so that's about it. I've been enjoying the first few tracks. She's got a great voice. Love the idea of an entire album of "Heaux Tales" or maybe it's just a great title. ha. I really enjoyed this! Fun and a little complex.
Loved the interludes and the vibes were stellar.
This is fantastic and reminds me (the feeling anyway) of Liz Phair. Loved it!! Might be a 4.5 for me eventually.
“In one way it’s empowering, in another way it’s sad.”
I really liked this album. Solid grooves, lyrics and hooks.
Really digging the feeling of this album. Great soul music that I haven't heard before. I closed my eyes and starting swaying along with the music and then the album was done. Gonna go listen again!
Great album, didn't know much about this artist
There is a delightful quality in someone who can speak her truth frankly and openly. Sullivan mixes that candor with well-woven vocals and rhythm.
This was a good listen
LOVE the concept, feel ambivalent towards the execution. I didn’t really like most of the songs on this album (I’m not a huge fan of hip hop-pop) but I’m willing to relisten a few times and let them grow on me. The spoken word tracks were an excellent addition and enhanced the theme of the album. This album is rich in cultural and sociological critiques and will thematically hold up well.
Really liked the concept/framing device, interludes, vocals, and production. Will definitely be listening to again. Only song that put me off was the one about wanting to be rich but I will choose to take it as satire
4 - really interesting look into woman's perspectives in the sexual culture. The production is incredible and combined with sullivan's voice, carries the album to a surprisingly entertaining run with no luls in its short run time. I very rarely have this complaint, but I wanted a bit of a longer project, I thought the conclusion with Girl Like Me wasn't really the end of the narrative she was giving with the tales she wove throughout, but maybe it was just meant to be a snapshot anyways. Not every track particularly struck my taste, but it is all well done
Never heads of this artist and this album blew me away. The insight and the honesty. Plain speaking. Bold. Just brilliant.
Yessss
Really good. Would definitely listen again and interested in what else she has done!
I liked it more than Aubz… also Anderson .paak
Not my typical genre but this was really good! I found out Mary already knows and loves Jazmine.
Pretty and poignant and groovin'
I’m nothing if not an R&B girl
Well mixed, s woman frank about her sexuality, it is pretty interesting.
Pick Up Your Feelings is a great song. Love the layering -- really reminds me of some Anderson .Paak / NxWorries. Good clean soulful fun right here. Put It Down shines as well for its production and simple but catchy chorus. Ay we got a Chesapeake Bay shout-out on On It. This one features some of the funnier lyricism thus far as well over top of a slinky guitar instrumental for a laid back classic R&B ballad. I'm not usually one for interludes, but in this album they actually feel relevant and deliberate. Donna's Tale reminds me of the cussing pastor interludes on Freddie Gibbs x Madlib's "Situations." Speaking of Anderson .Paak, here he is on Price Tags. Love his solo work (he deserves a spot on this list), but he always shines on features. This is no exception. He flows smoothly over the beat -- feels like it was tailor made for him. Also love the crust Sullivan throws into her vocals here -- feels vaguely like a Mariah Carey or something. Transition from Rashida's Tale to Lost One is smooth. And I think its probably my favorite song on the album so far. Gonna go right back into this one. I have an up and down relationship with R&B, but this was a very solid album. 4 / 5
I had never heard of this - which isn't surprising since I'm no expert in R&B, nor am I under any delusion that I'm the target audience for an album like this. Still, it's really good. It's like Missy Elliot and Lauren Hill had a baby. I like the concept with the little "vignettes" followed by a song. It gave it a real folksy, story-telling vibe - but remained very much R&B. It's badass.
Miss Sullivan is from Philly, so this is automatically good. Dudes who don't like this can't find the clit.
i feel like we've been getting assigned a lot of albums with interludes and skits lately? this was a complete unknown for me, and leans a liiiiitle bit too capitalist for my *personal* taste but i really enjoyed the brief reprieve from the rest of this list and getting to sit with some current r&b and production values. 3.5
an album packed with raw emotion, storytelling, and some truly phenomenal vocal performances. It’s a project that blends R&B, neo-soul, and spoken-word interludes to create an intimate and honest exploration of love, relationships, and self-worth. While it has moments of brilliance, there are also a few things that hold it back from being a truly outstanding album for me. Jazmine Sullivan’s Heaux Tales is defined by her stunning vocals—powerful, controlled, and deeply emotional. Tracks like Lost One and Pick Up Your Feelings highlight her effortless switch between vulnerability and powerhouse belting. Rich harmonies, layered textures, and gospel influences elevate the vocal production, making it a standout feature. The production is smooth and well-balanced, with a clean mix that perfectly places vocals and instruments. It shifts between minimalist moments, like the acoustic Girl Like Me, and fuller tracks like Price Tags. Rich, warm beats blend classic R&B with modern influences, creating a fresh yet familiar sound. Lyrically, while the themes of empowerment and self-discovery are strong, some of the messages feel a bit repetitive. The album sticks closely to its concept, which is great for cohesion, but it also means that by the end, it feels like you’ve already heard variations of the same ideas multiple times Heaux Tales is an emotionally rich album showcasing Jazmine Sullivan’s stunning vocals and sharp storytelling. Strong harmonies and production elevate it, but excessive interludes and some weaker tracks lessen its impact. While moments of brilliance shine, the album isn’t consistently engaging. Still, Sullivan’s voice makes it worth a listen. A solid 3.7/5 with flashes of greatness.
Empowering songs about female struggles with sex, relationships, self-esteem, and body image set to shades of Lauryn Hill, Destiny's Child, and other pop r&b vibes from the 90s and 00s brought into the modern day. Loved it. Compelling performances throughout. Also listened to the remaining deluxe tracks but didn't feel nearly as strongly about them as the standard EP version. Still good though.
What is the date range of this website lol This albums pretty cool though. I was drawing more outfit designs in my sketchbook while listening and looking at some deadlock things! I recently watched lookback and there was a scene with a ton of the sketchbook of the exact one I buy and was like omg... I do that... I felt bad about buying dupes of the same type of sketchbook for some reason but it made me feel less weird doing it. They've V good sketchbooks too!!! I need to get some. The person who is reading this look cute today, unless you're sweaty and nasty. If you are dms are open
I jokingly called this 'the divine masculine', but It seriously does sound like a woman's response to Mac Miller's 'The Divine Feminine'. Kicking off with a strong and convincing set of openers the album's narrative is immediate and unapologetic. As it continues, generally speaking, they tend to run together along the same pleasing note until the record's completion. The low points are few, and they aren't low. In fact they did almost too complete a job on this one trimming the fat of the record, it's very lean, and you as the listener believe that Sullivan has the ability to expand outside of the walls of it. The deluxe somewhat addresses this, it opens up some space and allows for some experimentation with different styles. There's this Goldilocks situation where the original needed more and the deluxe added a little too much. If you were a fan of the original the fluffy deluxe only adds, but I'm surprised one or two tracks couldn't fight their way onto the 32 minute runtime of the original. A very good R&B album, perhaps not a culturally important one, but only time will tell.
8/10 Insanely sweet, Black femininity and sensuality explored through multiple lenses, all while providing catchy and grooving R&B cuts with Trap, Soul, Pop, and Funk influences that remain consistently great throughout these 30 minutes. I know the reception had to be warranted to an extent, especially since I saw many publications and even my friend’s really loving the Deluxe expansion, but I didn’t think it would be a really well balanced piece of work, which makes sense since there’s only 8 full length tracks on here, but no moment is really wasted, even if you aren’t big on some songs, the quality is not far behind. https://imgur.com/a/eLOY4U0
An education in proper RnB. Or at least the closest there’s been since Houmous & Chutney’s 47th studio album, An Education In Proper RnB. 3.6
Heaux Tales is about an apt of a title about the experiences undergone romantically by Black women, both for good and for ill, and Jazmine Sullivan is the chronicler documenting these tales (whether by collaborators or by lifelong friends) while weaving in her own. Whether or not you feel prudish about the heart-on-sleeve exclamations from these women, the fact of the matter is that Heaux Tales is a necessary balm for those who have been predominantly unheard and it is time that we listen and take heed. Favorites: Bodies, Pick Up Your Feelings, Put It Down, Price Tags, Lost One.
It was almost jarring to get such a current album and also nice to get something that is in a major musical blind spot for me. Awesome production and a really great voice. With the dialogue interludes it reminds me of a modern day version of The Chronic. "Put it Down" was a highlight and the Anderson.paak track "Price Tags."
A standard vibe from a talented, empowered, female rapper. Powerful lyrics with a pronounced message, good flow. Not something I would listen to regularly but I can definitely see why it got recognized here.
Never heard of her before. This album hit me in the right way at the right time.
This album was interesting, but I struggle to figure out why it is on this list when so many better R&B albums from the 90s to present are ignored. I found her interludes where she was explaining feelings and thoughts were more compelling than the songs. In fact, the talking tracks stuck with me more than any of the songs did after the album was over. This is more of a 3.5, but since we can't do half stars, it's getting a 4
Whoa, this was all new to me and I really enjoyed this. Funny, smart, sexy r&b songs and interludes about desire - the climax, "The Other Side", was great.
Not in my edition of the book! 2021. 4 stars. Quality R&B, sounds like Beyonce's sister. An ideal riposte to all those misogynistic rappers who refer to women as bitches and whores. Point deducted for liberal use of the n* word, which in going to date these tracks soooo badly in about 10 years time.
This album is really interesting as a spiritual successor to The Miseducation of Lauren Hill. The album feels very personal and genuine, and the confessional-style spoken pieces between the songs really add something, which I think is something I've only ever said before with Lauren Hill's album. The music is great, and it really seems like it gets better as the album goes on and you start to get more of a feel for her personality and her history in relationships 4/5
This one caught me off guard. Really in depth and introspective. Good beats. Good lyrics. Best track - pick up your feelings
Thought this was going to be a Cardi B or Meg thee Stallion rip off, turned out tocbe some very enjoyable R&B
This is a great short little bad bitch ep. Firmly in the camp of soul and RnB but with a very current flair. I think it captures a lot of the sentiment of the times where artists like Cardi B, Nikki Minaj, or Megan Thee Stallion are finding success reclaiming their sexuality and carving out a space for women in hip hop. I think this EP is excellent. It definitely feels more bare with the amount of skits but I think they add a lot narratively so I won't complain. The tracks we do get are very good. Put it down, price tags, and the other side are my favorite tracks. Content wise this album really seems like it could be looked at as a time piece. It has the type of comedy that made WAP the viral sensation but without departing from it's roots as an album about love and wanting to be loved. It's a touching piece that I think is very tastefully done. I'll be honest, I've never heard of this album or artist prior to today. Maybe because RnB and Soul aren't popular as much anymore or because they get overshadowed by their brother hip hop. I guess this goes to show how easy it is to miss a hit release when you aren't really paying attention. This album won the BET best album of the year. That alone puts it on this list.
This was barely not an EP and over too quickly. I found this enjoyable and after it's completion youtube began playing a Lauryn Hill playlist and it fit in just fine. Our first rap video looking chick.
Jazmine is great. Put It Down and Price Tags are my favorite tracks from this album.
I really liked this when it came out and put it on my list of favorite albums from 2021. Ah yes, I forgot how great “lost one” is.
Not 1st listen- pretty sure when I got back into this project after dropping it for a year, I saw the most recent release was Heaux Tales, put it on for a lark and was left profoundly indifferent. I've had about two years to change my mind, and in the meantime listened to a lot of soul and R&B that may have informed Ms. Sullivan in the present day: Erykah Badu, Chaka Khan, D'Angelo, Beyonce, etcetera. What did we learn... - Never appreciated the gospel influences in this album until today - Sullivan's range is a wonder, in certain songs she sounds like 3 different ppl - I really enjoy the spooky riff in "Price Tags" feat. Anderson.Paak - The walk-on cameos from Paak and Ari Lennox made me consider that they'd be justified inclusions for this list on their own (having heard Malibu earlier this year, and Lennox's Shea Butter Baby literally today) - Despite the mountain of talent on display, I had a feeling of "is that it?" at the end. Which led me to Heaux Tales, Mo' Tales. - The title of the deluxe version is pretty accurate: there are definitely more tales. They're pretty good, but I believe the standouts were already on the standard version. - So we're back at the standard version. Over half of the "real" songs (4/7) are listed below as my personal highlights, and I don't mind the other 3, so case closed, right? Any other album (or extended play -_-) that I can shout out over half the tracks is a pearl. I can nitpick all I want about the interludes, which structured as they are is a bit academic for my tastes. As embarrassed as I am to admit, I gave Lauryn Hill's only album 3 stars at the beginning of this project, partly because of the interludes; but at least the way they were interspersed were more organic. But it all comes back to the music, and hoowee it's a doozy. Heaux Tales is perhaps another hasty modern entry, and will probably be removed the next time they come out with a book edition, but it IS a promising example of where R&B is going into the 2020s. Rounding up to a 4 HL: "Price Tags", "Lost One", "On It", "Girl Like Me" November 20, 2024
I was surprised by how much I liked it.
Beaucoup aime cette prise de parole assumée, accompagnée d’une proposition musicale mature, sobre et ciselée
Solid R&B effort that I enjoyed a little more than I expected, just because it’s typically not my go-to genre. Every song is well crafted and performed, and as a girl dad I’m all for boss-ass lady singers that empower women.
This album has a super interesting concept, and while I didn't love all of the songs, they're pretty good overall.
more cohesive than abbey road
En ollutkaan julkaisuvuoden jälkeen kamalasti kuunnellut tätä. Hyvä r'n'b-platta seksistä ja parisuhteista nykypäivässä.
Interesting. "Concept" album but the concept is very muddy and wandering. Challenges points of view, but some points feel lost in thought and it feels like it's challenging thought without providing conclusions in some cases. Occassionally dives into the territory of venting frustration over one's own perception of other's perception of them which feels falsely provocative and lacking any real substance. Reviews largely praise the album for feminism-related traits and empowerment, and while that seems often true, there are also portions that present the use of sexual manipulation and monetary exploitations of partners as positive traits which really throws mud on that message. Perhaps those are meant to be tongue and cheek, but following a matching spoken word feature, it feels like it's intended at face value to a large extent. The portions where discussion felt like the motive seemed well structured though and, in the end, it's extremely rare that a musician can make good music while presenting a complete and nuanced discussion/case of a greater social issue. They're professional musicians, not professional philosophers. Overall, R&B isn't my genre but this was far more enjoyable than I would have assumed. Occasionally questionable subject matter aside, honest statements are never perfect, good album.
can be a little sultry at times, but this has some depth to it. simple concept that’s executed quite well. a worthy addition to this list
I don't like too much contemporary R&B, but this is great. Soulful voice, honest, sensual songwriting, great minimalist production, and a really tightly built album.
Didn’t expect to like this at all; generally hip hop/R&B leaves me cold. I find explicit lyrics about shagging pretty tedious and in no way empowering for women. All that said, I really really enjoyed listening to it and will definitely do so again. Bizarre.
Good album. Kinda made me realize the sad truth people struggle with when their relationships are built around sex. I knew it was bad, but i didnt know it was that bad.
Although the vocals and quality of the music was very good, hip hop is not a genre I can relate or connect to so I felt disengaged with the whole thing throughout. That said, it's worthy of a positive review and it would be unfair not to give it one just because of my personal view.
Right up my freakin alley. Pick Up Your Feelings has been on my playlist for awhile now and I'm glad I finally listened the rest of her album. The talking tracks or sketches take me out a bit, but the rest is quite enjoyable.
I don’t usually go for this type of R&B, and I’ve hated some R&B I’ve had in the past. But I do like this modern take on it. Some good Lauryn Hill vibes here.
I liked the way the songs develop themes from the spoken word interludes. I thought the content was interesting, but I don’t like the way her voice is processed, and the generic R&B backing. I preferred when she was singing with guitar accompaniment, reminded me of Tracy Chapman.
Very cool
Very personal and fresh.
I had never heard of Jazmine Sullivan which isn't surprising since it's very recent and modern pop music, which is a world I am very not plugged in to. This was honestly great, really enjoyed it all the way through.
Overraskende bra
I had never heard of her. I thought this was excellent. Her songs are extremely forthright and honest.
From memory this is the latest album in the book! This belongs in the category of excellent albums here that simply aren’t to my taste. ‘Kiwanuka’, ‘People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm’, ‘Evermore’, ‘The Hardline According to Terence Trent D’Arby’. As a gay man I’m not listening to ‘On It’ again… 9/10.
This isnt always the best-produced album, but the vocals and lyrics more than make up for that slight shortcoming. Very much a representation of 2021, black women will eventually save us all. 4/5
Heaux Tales is a nice R&B surprise. It is quite short, containing 14 tracks of which 6 are spoken word interludes.
I had no knowledge of Jazmine before she popped up as my pick for the day. On paper it shouldn't work for me. A young, black, American female delivering a concept album about sexuality, relationships ... and the power that sex has in making and breaking things. It's quite power ful stuff. Is it for me? A lot of the contemporary stuff doesn't come close to getting through my flabby, middle aged ears. But I thought this was great. I loved the story telling. I loved the honesty of it all. The production is mostly free of grating autotune, Jazmine can sing, the bass is round. I've listened to it a number of times. It's lacking some hooks, but as a complete body of work I think it's fabulous. The Deluxe version is great too.
short and sweet 🌺
These are the albums I wait for on this list. Newer albums that I didn't even know existed but are right up my alley. Also want to praise the use of Tales instead of Interludes. Often those interludes are pointless and annoying but these were filled with stories of the female experience, very unique. I loved almost all the tracks but I think those tales were my favorite part.
Really cool to get this one! I heard it when it came out and really enjoyed it, liked it a bite more this time around. I dig just about every non-interlude track, and even though I could go without the interludes, I appreciate what they add to the narrative, everything fits. Nice R&B concept album, well executed. Favorite tracks: Price Tags, Girl Like Me, Bodies, On It, Lost One, The Other Side. Album art: Really great cover, slight Virgil Abloh vibes. Cool portait picture of Jazmine, and the font and color is nice. Strong. 4/5
I have never heard of Jazmine Sullivan but this was a great album and I will add to my rotation! I enjoyed the storytelling in between songs and the positive message about sex.
Its lyrical and melodic. Really like Pick Up Your Feelings. Would def listen to again.
This was much better than i had expected. Serious R & B vibes.
Loved this! Life experiences and perspectives from a feminine perspective that I still don't get enough exposure to, with great vocal performances and set to some really fun production/arrangements. Not lifechanging, but fun music with something to say. 4.5 rounded down to 4.
• Love "Pick Up Your Feelings". Love the production of this song. Gives me a feeling I wish I could describe... It's the kind of song I would LOVE to hear live. • Put It Down is unexpectedly relatable... Wasn't expecting that lol. • "On It" is so sultryyyy. • The conversational clips, told from different black women's perspectives: I can see what Jazmine is doing. All these conversational clips are to make a statement that this album is coming from a place of giving black women a voice about their identity with womanhood, societal identity and sexuality. These clips add a personable, casual conversation tone to the album, like Jasmine is wanting to include us, the listeners, in this conversation. It gives the vibe that this album is a collection of different women of colour's stories. I really kinda like it. • Amanda's Tale is... relatable. I'm not black, but I am a woman, and her statements about comparing herself to other women, feeling like she only has sex to offer, acknowledging that her sexual power is empowering but also sad at the same time... "I feel moments of sadness knowing that just me alone and who I am is not enough" yeah, oof. • The way the final track segues from Amanda's Tale is really well done. Love the journey of this album - of women proudly talking of their sexual liberation... and coming to realise by the end of the album that the experience of women - black women, white women, but especially black because that is where this album is coming from, speaking from - is that all men see is sex and not what lives beneath that. The shame, hurt, only feeling like sex is all men see as worthwhile in woman, all that women are taught to see is valuable in themselves. Really like this album. Very thoughtful, melancholic, full of womanly curves in its soft and sultry beats and tones, and gritty in all its raw and honest revelations of black femininity.
I’m going to have to revisit this, study the lyrics. Unusual format, not exactly easy listening.
3.4
good album good vocals good shit 4.2/5
I had not heard of Jazmine Sullivan but I am glad to know who she is now. Super solid R&B album that you could tell meant something to her personally. At times it almost felt like a therapy session of her love life. The beats were good, the melodies silky and the interludes didn't negatively effect the album. I plan on coming back to Sullivan and exploring her music further.
Todo un despliegue de lo que debe ser el R&B en la actualidad.
Went to The Other Side so I could Pick Up Your Feelings and put Price Tags on them.
Incredible writing about serious topics. Shoutout to empowered women. The music is well written but simple, showcasing the lyrics and poetry. The structure is what makes this album stand out: incredibly vulnerable spoken word followed by songs expanding on those concepts. Easy to connect with and overwhelmingly honest
Wow! Just Wow! Incredible album, like a mix betweenold chance the rapper and Janelle monae with a touch of sza and frank ocean! Only fault the album has is the lack if a strong closing track .
One star for the album title, one star for the interstitials, one star for the well above average songs, one star for not being a name I'd ever heard but for having an album this listenable on first listen? Pretty good stuff.
3.5/5
I didn't mind this. Always cool to see Anderson Paak popping up. I think it's itornic that on a list full of wanknalbums from the 70s people here are moaning about the relevancy of the lyrical content. It all very current to me.
Likable on many levels, most importantly the musical. Flows are real and R&B-like, and the content shows vulnerability that seems more authentic (if oversharing) than a marketing ploy. "Sex is my superpower" indeed!
Slayyyyy
cetait super jasmine ecoute pas les debiles sur ce reseau
I have to own that I prefer classic R&B over the more contemporary examples, because, in general, it tends to be more harmonically interesting. With that said, I was impressed by this album. It has the sparse instrumentation, driven predominantly by the drum machine and bass, that usually bores me after a while. However, there was a nice variety of grooves established for each track, which set the stage for Jazmine Sullivan’s excellent vocal performance. She demonstrates great versatility with her voice. The lyrics were pretty crass, but the delivery felt honest to me. I will definitely listen to this again when the mood strikes me.
Hadn't heard of this artist before but enjoyed this. Could have lived without the spoken word interludes but that's just a personal bugbear I have with them in general
Feels like a modern miseducation of Lauryn hill
So - musically lovely smooth and silky contemporary R&B and hip hop - but it’s a nice shift of perspective finally from the usual male focussed idea of sexuality to women’s viewpoints - each song accompanied by a ‘skit’. Thing is, again t skits - they’re fine on first listens but get in the way of making an album timeless.
Liked it a lot
This is the first album from this project that I've listened to, having not heard it before, and thought "I need to listen to this more and really wrap my head around it." That's a mark of quality, to be sure. Excited to spend more time with this.
A front to back joy, and maybe one of the few times the interludes are what brings the album all together.
concept album 😌💅
Pop agradable. Va, un 4.
Amazing vocals
This album was so refreshing after luke 2 straight weeks in 1969 to 1971. The music is quite nice and I like the testimonials in between the songs, kind of a unique gimmick that works well with the album title. Price Tags was my favorite here, followed by Lost One.
This in a great EP from a modern R&B singer. The track include short, spoken word segments, and the songs that follow are studies of the character types expressed through the spoken word tracks.
Wow
Listened Before? N I've never even heard of her before! This album was so creative and well put together! Her voice is so interesting and transforms at the drop of a hat. Great music with great lyrics too. I loved this. The interspersment of the different women's stories was a great thing too. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist:
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’s slag sister
I'm not sure how I hadn't heard of this before as someone that reads end of year best of lists religiously, but I did. I guess it speaks to a real blind spot in the music that I consume. This album truly is a gem; it's raw and emotional, but the music is really well-produced that the songwriting is strong. I can't relate too much to the subject matter for most of the songs, but I guess that's why it's good to listen to different than normal types of music, right?
Really loved the raw vocals and smooth R&B melodies. The songs were a bit too horny for me but I guess it's in the name of the album so that's on me.
Not my usual vibe, but I really liked this album. 3.5/5
Pretty shocked I haven't meaningfully listened to this Philly queen before, supremely talented. Excellent use of skits/spoken word. Favorite track: Price Tags
This definitely has potential to be my kind of thing. Sounds fun, like a cooler version of lizzo. She kinda gives TPain vibes and I’m liking it. Put it down and pick up your feelings have been good so far. On it sounds good but I’m pretty sure it’s just about shagging. Price tags is unfortunately not my favourite, but Anderson Paak’s bit was good.
It was a really good listen. Lively R&B and great story telling about the duality of women, and their many wants and needs
Great r&b album
Pretty good fine. Enjoyed the concept. Loved the sound.
Funky, diverse, and mostly fun. The first half is better than the second
Armonía sencilla pero buenos arreglos y gran ambientación musical, me gustó la manera en la que se combina el R&B y e rap. Me gusto el concepto y en general me pareció un buen disco, lo disfruté.
Went into this listening thinking we’d dislike the album but I was personally pleasantly surprised. I thought the songs were catchy with a nice beat, and I enjoyed the overall concept of the album. Ciara felt it was a little too spoken wordy at parts, but it worked for me. Though some of them were recorded a bit badly and difficult to understand. I would definitely revisit this album and in general, just cool to experience newer music for the first time as I’ve absolutely never heard of this.
I really love the concept of the album, and really enjoyed listening to people's stories and then a musician exploring the concepts musically. The vocals on the album are also stellar.
This was so good what the hell
I was surprised by this album. I went into it without realizing it was a concept album revolving around the stories of women and their differing views and experiences regarding their sexual agency. The views expressed here are diverse and provide a unique window into experiences I will never have. Musically, this album spans hip hop, nu soul, and classic R&B. It was concise and short with no wasted space and very well done. No wonder it ended up on a bunch of year’s best lists.
Surprised to find this on here, not the typical style of music that makes it to this list. I had only heard "Pick Up Your Feelings" before which is a good track so was interested in this. Not a big fan of the talks in between tracks but the tracks themselves were groovy. Not groundbreaking beats or rapping but still a good listen. I think this gets a weak 4 from me since it is something different in this list which always feels nice and I enjoyed many of the tracks. Would it be on my lest of best albums? Probably not but I could understand someone putting it there.
