Reviews (page 7 of 14)

Classic record! One (pun intended) I’ve listened over and over countless times. But this time I do a deep dive. The lyrics are pretty cool, they’re pretty on the nose but they fit the song good. Of course loads of great riffs, and features some om Metallica’s best solos. Some bass would be nice tho. This is a very energetic Metallica, with some of their heaviest moments as well as very experimental outings for them. Key tracks, Blackened, …And Justice For All, Eye Of The Beholder, One, The Shortest Straw, To Live Is To Die, Dyers Eve 8.5 out of 10

"And Justice for All" is an absolute masterpiece of thrash metal, if you enjoy being repeatedly smacked in the face with a chainsaw made of guitar riffs and drums. The complete lack of bass guitar only serves to enhance the raw, unbridled power of this album. It's like a never-ending adrenaline rush, except instead of a rush, it's more of a sustained, full-body assault. If you're a fan of having your ear drums permanently damaged, then this is definitely the album for you.

Alp metal should be like Metallica

Quite a good Metallica album. Not my favourite but definitely has some real bangers. Very close to a 5 for me. Giving 4 because it's not necessarily something I'll listen to over and over as a whole album.

This album straddles the line between the thrash the Metallica pioneered, and a more progressive sound full of tempo changes and through composed song structures. If anything here seems superfluous, it's the occasionally stale guitar solos of Hammett which sometimes steal momentum and intensity from the otherwise incessant drive of the record (mostly provided by Hetfields picking hand). Lars' off kilter drumming however seems to find a good balance on this record. A very strong record all around despite its flaws.

Not the best but gotta love Metallica

I had forgotten just how solid this album is as I've really not listened to it in many years. But my biggest complaint will always remain and why I can never give this album a 5. WHERE IS THE BLOODY BASS! Poor Jason Newstead.

A great album really, I will say that I don't listen to it very often simply because I find it a bit repetitive but a great album nonetheless

Still reeling from the sudden death of bassist Cliff Burton, the surviving members of Metallica pour their grief into this collection of angry, hard-edged screeds against greed and corruption. Of particular is “One,” a musical interpretation of Johnny Got His Gun that is sublimely horrific and still stands as one of the band’s essential songs.

Some choice tracks

Það á greinilega að rífa man upp á rassgatinu, harkalega, þennan morguninn!

Better than I expected

This is a complicated record for Metallica. It hits just as hard as there first three albums, but it's the first without their original bassist. It's the first the album with a new bassist who they neglect because the album is infamous in that there is no bass in the mix. I would say this album is the black sheep in the bands first four albums, the classic thrash period, for the band. The band tries to tackle politcal concepts that maybe profound to some but may seem illconcived to others.

Solid enough album, but felt a little repetitive to me at times. Standout is "One"

Finally Metallica, one of my favorite bands. I have listened to this album before but it has been a long time. One might be their best song, definitely top 3. Harvester of sorrow just makes me laugh because that's Paul Konerko's walk up song so it reminds me of my childhood. And justice for all and to live is to die are GREAT songs. Kick ass album 7/10

The production is crap and the bass has been turned right down. You can also hear the lack of Cliff Burton's classically trained ear. This was defiantly a tipping point from when they went from thrash gods to mainstream metalheads. But, it's bookended with two of the best opening and closing tracks in metal: 'Blackened' & 'Dyers Eve'. Also to have the 7m 26s 'One' as a single and their first music video is hilarious - a song that's made even better when seeing it live with the gratuitous use of pyrotechnics. Definitely the sound of a band going through a major transition and processing the grief of losing Burton. It's not as slick or complete as the previous three albums to this, but it's still packed full of great riffage that gets the head banging.

Its hard, fast but strangely melodic too. I never was a fan then saw then at Reading and then I got it ... masters in their craft.

4.3 - It's easy to see why people love this record and why Metallica are considered a GOAT. Sharp vocals, clear messaging in the lyrics, elegant arrangements and, above all, impeccable guitar work. On a side-note, I'm listening to "One" within the context of the album for the first time and I find it a much richer listening experience than hearing it on MTV or on the radio. It's hard to explain but that song feels far more epic on record.

Pretty good one carried it imo

Very important album in the metal/thrash genre. I wish the bass was turned up/mixed better. Overall a great album.

4 Good lostening

Great album by a great band.

Classic Thrash metal from one of the"Big Four" I can't believe I never to the album.

It's a pretty impressive release, solid on Metallica albums history, even not the best one, in my opinion. I think that this album lacks singles for a band like Metallica ("One" is the exception that confirms the rule), and the songs are too long. In short, I enjoyed it very much, but it's not a 5-star.

I absolutely love Blackened, Eye of the Beholder and One. Other tracks support the sound and energy but are enough of a step down that it doesn't quite live up to 5 stars for me.

Very solid album. So many amazing guitar riffs. To Live is to Die had some tender moments as well and I really enjoyed that track.

Great album, this was the point where Metallica began to change and refine their sound. When it came out, purists hated it. I think it's awesome.

listened to before it's...good

Dry mix that is well known for having bass guitar, but not bass drums, way too low in the mix, aggressive but catchy songs, part of the end of the MTV generation of metal and rock music being as popular is hip hop is in the 2020s. Tight, scooped mid guitar tones. I had never realized how good of an album this was, but I definitely like Master of Puppets much more for both tunes and recording style. This album could use more bass and a touch of reverb, but the lack of reverb helps to showcase the virtuosity they had on this album by making the mix far less muddy. This genre appealed to me much more when I was a teen. I didn’t give this album as much of a chance when it came out as I should have.

Aggressive, technical thrash. I used to love this album, and it still has some amazing moments but I did finding it dragging on a bit. Probably my least favourite of their 80s albums.

Great listen. I’ll maybe go back to this a couple of times

I had heard a couple of songs before. It was good

Not bad…not my genre, but glad I listened.

7/8 broken axes

While this is not my favorite Metallica album, that title going to The Black Album, it does contain what I think is my favorite Metallica song though with "One". I do agree with the criticisms of the mix and have laughed at my fair share of ...And Justice For All lack of bass memes. It just isn't there. The length of these songs for a metal album is also a point against the album. Despite these negatives there are way more positives and this is still a great album that certainly deserves its spot on this list.

Never listened to this one before. It is really good. But I still think ride the lightning and maybe kill em all is better

7/13/2022 - ALBUM #167 Today's Album: "...And Justice For All" by Metallica - When I saw this album in vinyl for only $20 at walmart, it was right after I saw this album appear on the generator, so I figured, “I’ll listen to this one for the first time on vinyl because maybe the compression of music on spotify had tainted my perception of the critically acclaimed Master of Puppets, altering the overall experience.” After listening to this one a few times and comparing notes, I can say with confidence that my hypothesis was correct. The amount of depth that was gained in my listening experience from spotify to vinyl for this album has made me rethink if my distaste for metal was ever a product of poor audio equipment. But what do I actually think of the record itself? I actually think this one holds up as one of the best In Metallica’s discography, even if there are some major issues with it. The biggest issue that people seem to have with it is that it lacks any bass guitar since the frontman didn’t like the way the bass part sounded. However, I feel like paying attention to what isn’t there misses the point of all the great stuff that is still present in this album. In my opinion, these songs are some of Metallica’s most creative in terms of song-structure, instrumental performances, and lyricism. The opener, Blackened, perfectly kicks off the album with some infectious thrash grooves and dark, prophetic lyrics of a darkened existence and human self-destruction. The guitar solo near the end of the track is not only breathtaking, but it sets a standard that is upheld throughout the proceeding tracks. The first impact of the track …And Justice For All does reveal a somewhat glaring issue in the overall sound of this record, where the lack of a bass part causes the drums to sound just way to bassy in the mix and the kick drum sort of fills up the bass frequencies with this really aggressive bassy hum that is hard to ignore. Much of the album doesn’t have this sound present, but when it does show up it does really take away from the listening experience. The track One might be Metallica’s most praised track and I think it absolutely deserves that praise. The guitar pickwork and tone is hypnotic and though the lyrics of bed-ridden death and potentially iron lungs are depressing, they’re delivered with such power and presence. The rest of the album after One doesn’t stand out quite as much as the beginning, but as a complete listen, they still bring just as impressive songwriting and instrumental performances. I enjoy how all of the tracks flesh out this concept of injustices occurring in the world and the corruption that exists within the systems of government, calling them out for falsely waving the flag of justice while committing heinous acts. It’s a concept that resonates with me differently each time I relisten to the album as I discover the intentions and hidden meanings behind the lyrics. Overall, this album stands tall in Metallica’s overall discography in my opinion, as it has a solid, resonant concept and a ton of headbanging thrashy goodness. The bass being missing definitely holds this album back, but listening to youtube covers of the album with bass being added back in make me absolutely sure that this album’s songwriting and the remaining instrumental performances make it stand on it’s own. Give this one a listen if you like Metallica or thrash metal in general. Highlights: Blackened, And Justice For All, Eye of the Beholder, One, The Shortest Straw, Harvester of Sorrow, The Frayed Ends of Sanity, To Live is To Die, Dyer’s Eve Score: 8/10 Visceral and poignant criticism of American justice through solid thrash metal

Oh hey it's Metallica

I forgot about the song One, it's so good. Liked it even though I'm kind of over my Metallica phase.

Very solid overall! Lot's of brilliant ideas dragged down by the shitty production, but has a few great tracks. "One" is a standout of course, and most songs have excellent guitar solos. "To Live Is To Die" is a sleeper hit. Album's a tad long, I think. Flawed, but still great.

Me gusto carajo 4 trapitos de 5

I kinda know this band… The album opens with blackened a song that initially seems grand but then forms into this all guns blazing riot of a song it works really well as an opener to the album as each time I was bored they would just change the whole song; just what is needed for a 6 minute song. Now for a 9 minuter the album’s title track (…and justice for all) the intro is done much better on this song it builds up from these relaxing mellow guitars to a choppy crunchy metal song. The lyrics are good , metal lyrics don’t really tend to work on me with the same themes of satan always being sung out, but this feels different it feels like a band who care about what they’re doing as musicians to make an admirable piece of musicianship. The guitars on the verses of eye of the beholder remind me of a horse galloping only to come crashing down an amazing effect. I’am not too fussed on the vocals on the verses of this song. The chorus is a bit more messy but it works and the vocals sound better here. So the song is a mixed bag but not bad. Song four is the song one it’s kind of a pause to the album as the listener knows it showing them that metallica can do more than the in your face long winded but good metal song. Well actually the song is still long winded but the rest holds true this is the album’s blissful walk in the park, great. Oh no, wait it turns into your typical metal song half way through. The shortest straw has everything you expect but nothing else. Good but not one I would re-listen to in a hurry. The start of harvester of sorrow is explosive then it forms into sounding like an army is marching towards you. It’s awesome everything that I want in one of these songs and not too long. I love the first 30 or so seconds of the frayed ends of sanity the most off the whole album but i’am not saying the rest of the song is anything but epic it’s ambitious but epic the albums best song. The album’s penultimate track is the 9 minute epic to live is to die it’s similar to one in the way that it starts off all acoustic then takes a massive left turn as it goes on. When the acoustic guitars come on these menacing guitars come on like you’re about to fight the final boss in a video game. It’s an awesome piece of skilful musicianship, it would’ve been my favourite song if it had lyrics that weren’t just spoken word stuff. The album closes on a good but rather odd note with dyer’s eyes a rather choppy mess of a track not stopping for much, having the album’s most aggressive singing and instrumentation. I like it but don’t love it. It was a bit too dragged out and in your face to be a 5 but it’s still a great display of musicianship and everything like that.

What a great album by Metallica. Stand out track for me is One and I actually started liking this song back when it appeared on a Guitar Hero game. Definitely recommend any of Metallica's older works.

It's really hard to find a bad song or record through Metallica's first four. Loud, heavy, but absolutely gorgeous in spots when they peel away the overdrive and delve into more the classical pieces. Favorite tracks: "...And Justice for All", "One", "To Live is To Die"

F baixo

Hey guess what? Metallica kicks ass!

Great album. I still recall the first time I heard One and it gave me chills. It still gives me chills now, on every listen. It's just terrible and beautiful. This album is before Hetfield starting adding extraneous 'ahh's on the end of every line. I almost miss it, weirdly. But yes, great album from what was a great band.

4/5. Most certainly not their best, but still better than Rust in Peace 🤷‍♂️

Raw, driving, hard. All what you would expect from early Metallica. B+

If you didn’t know, Metallica freaking shreds

Not my favorite Metallica album, Hetfield’s choruses sound repetitive. The music is really hard hitting. Enjoyed it!

Pretty classic Metallica album. It is a solid follow-up to Master of Puppets, with a few gloomy/grungy slower jams that still capture the essence of this band. Vocal mixing on a couple tracks has not aged well. Still a fun listen. Fuck Napster.

Very good. Started off a bit meh, but was really into the album during the second half.

And Justice For All, One, The Shortest Straw, To Live Is To Die, Dyers' Eve Moins pref: Eye of the Beholder

The meme is definitely spot on - this could've been way more powerful with some actual low end in the mix. There's still riffs for days and "One" is a classic I never grow tired of.

Could stand to have a better mix, but ultimately this album absolutely rocks regardless. It's a bit of an underrated part of Metallica's catalog due to leaning a bit more towards the prog-thrash movement that was happening at the time. Really deserves more appreciation.

No bass? No problem. 4

Something Metallica gets that a lot of similar bands don't is that the throttle doesn't have to be at 112% all the time. Best track: One

Is good, bit repetitive when listening to the entire album

staccato choppy tinny heavy rock - always liked One as a song, so an extra star

Frenetic guitar riffs, intricate harmonies, driving bass and gritty lyricism. An interesting almost entirely instrumental song in To Love Is To Die, which has a beautiful guitar part. Some songs overstay their welcome a little, but overall a good album!

Tres bon album de metallica . Un classique . 4.90

Metallica is extremely accessible to me, and I have mixed emotions about metal half the time. But this was perfectly intense and melodic. I have to admit I wasn't paying too much attention to lyrics, but that'll be on the agenda during the next listen. :)

Not Metallica's strongest album but has some great songs on it.

Great metal album. Solid throughout, but the highlight is definitely One.

Solid solid riffage with face-melting solos. Towards the end it loses its steam, but ends on a high note with Dyers Eve. Metallica's last truly great album. Needs more bass.

Songs good individually. Didn’t feel like a true true album though. Could’ve flowed better.

Good stuff

a no brainer.

Compared to the Black album - which I did not think was so strong anymore after listening to it now - I could appreciate this Metallica album much more after re-listening to it.

This was always my favourite Metallica album, but I really did not enjoy it as much this time around. The somewhat unusual production bothered me on this occasion: hardly any bass, and very harsh sounding drums. To Live is to Die is still the stand-out song for me.

Enjoyable

Not my jam, but can't deny the talent.

Liked it more than I thought

When this came out I was mostly listening to a lot of hip hop, Joy Division, New Order and The Doors. I never really warmed to Metallica but would say this is my favourite album. It marks a turning point for the band from their aggressive speed metal to their slow commercial stuff. I think this middle point is the band at it's best

Pretty great, the title track is amazing, not sure I will really go back to it though, but will still give it a 4 because I'm not a perfect human being

i like metal. this was a nice listen. had some good songs. several good listens!

Pretty powerful stuff. Not really my bag and all the songs are too long. Still can't deny the raw talent on display here.

Great album, not my favourite of Metallica's but One is a damn banger.

Enjoyed this one - crunchy and precise

Hell yeah

A good album with all that makes Metallica legendary, but the stale production really makes it hard to match it up to the Black Album or MOP.

Fast and raw with long songs that often sound like different songs stuck together but nonetheless a great album

I skipped school to go into Edinburgh to buy this then listened to it non-stop for weeks. Not their best, and pretty much cutting Jason Newstead from the mix impacts the sound. Still a good album though.

Here the lads begin to straddle thrash, rock and prog. They also turned down the bass so it's really lacking a bottom end. Production/ego issues aside, the songs are strong. I mean it's Metallica; all of their early albums are solid. Best Tracks: Blackened; One; The Shortest Straw

Drums sounds good

i knew this one, but not as well as others. i like it less than master of puppets, for whatever that's worth.

Ah sophomore year.

IMO together with Kill 'Em All one of the best Metallica albums

Ovviamente i testi ora mi fanno ridere. Quindi 4.. Come i Four Horsemen.

Not my favourite Metallica album, but a good one nonetheless!

A lot of energy and sadness. Will listen again.

Classic

Its metallica, maybe not their best álbum but a nice one

Not my genre specifically, but a solid album that feels very raw and emoti0onal. Lack of bass makes it sound abrasive.

Very enjoyable. Some caricatural style metal, but also some surprisingly nice riffs. Up there with master of puppets.

Dope Metal Album A proper Bass would have made it brilliant

Thrash classic. Great tunes but even the remaster still sounds trebley as all hell.

Some of the worse recorded drum sounds of all-time. “One” is still a classic

One is een meesterwerk! De rest is middelmatig, mooi geheel. 3.5 --> 4/5

Bastante largo para ser corto

Very peak Metallica. It’s not my favorite Metallica album, but there are some great songs. Musically you can hear the classical training on songs like “To Live is to Die”, which I could have listened to 9 minutes of the intro. Up there as one of their better albums, for sure

This is my Metallica. Accessible without compromising heaviness. Great album. Can't believe it was made in 1988; only 2 years after Master of Puppets, which sounds very dated by comparison.

Really great. Some amazing riffs and no shit ballads

flashback to 7th grade! I had friends in HS, they loved Metallica. This was on all the time. Not a bad track on the album. ONE was always a favorite and holds up just fine years later.

These guys can shred 🤘

Justice for all.. including Napster...

Metallica just makes me think of playing guitar hero and that cheap, plastic clacky sound. How many closets are full of those plastic guitars...

More like a 4.5 to me. The vocals sometimes don’t completely connect, and a couple of the switches within tracks can come off a bit odd. Everything else is absolutely incredible. Really great stuff.

not bad. some good songs

Excellent. A bit repetitive to some tracks.

The birth of double bass drum

This is without a doubt the best album I’ve listened to so far. It’s not something that I would listen to often but occasionally I could see myself playing a few songs off the album.

Super goed album met fijne sound

Not my preferred genre of music but it’s hard to deny that this is a great album. It shreds plain and simple!

FANTASTIC

Very good metal album. My opinion may be a little skewed as it's the first album I listened to using KZ ZS10 Pros and the experience of listening to music with good headphones is so very good.

I overdid it on Metallica back in middle school, but it was refreshing to listen to a full album again with a different perspective than I had back then. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, and it was nice to see a variety in my usual sound.

Classic album

Great metal

solid rock sounds, very quick paced on most songs, while good not a ton of jams

This a political BANGER.

Good album for sure

Although the energy and lyrics from the songs are amazing, the whole album is too much of the same for me. Maybe that's because of too much noise I don't know. Great songs, lyrics and message though.

klassikko

One is a horrifying masterpiece

Metallica does not falter in their 4th installment, still is not as immediate as master of puppet and ride the lightning. Also One is my fav Metallica song ever.

One, Harvester, Blackened, Dyers are all great

Every song is so long, man, kind of a slog, but One is an all timer

Did they have a bass player for this? Just kidding. The album cover art is hilarious in light of Metallica suing the ever loving shit out of every file sharing service and university ever. The songs are too long. One is the best song on the album so far...also the biggest song off the album by a mile. Everything sounds the same on this album. This is my 16-year-old's favorite Metallica album...I think he's wrong and because he's my teenage son, he definitely is. They have added the chants from the Wizard of Oz to The Frayed Ends of Sanity...that undercuts the seriousness with which I take this album. And for a band that takes themselves very seriously, that is probably the greatest insult I can throw. To Live Is to Die coming through in the penultimate slot to overtake One as the best song...great heavy metal instrumental. I even kind of like the four line spoken word poem at towards the end. I don't love Metallica, but to have the next song in the Spotify "Based on this album" list be Break Stuff by Limp Bizkit is the real insult.

Love Metallica's tracks with a slower buildup like One but I lose it a bit, particularly this album when they start furiously thrashing the guitars from the off.

Every time I listen to Metallica I'm like "yep sure sounds like Metallica" but I don't get much else from it

I like thrash metal, and I like Metallica, but this certainly isn't the band’s best effort. It has a few standout tracks, and the songwriting is relatively solid throughout. Where this album really falls apart, though, is in its production. The sound of the drums is seriously lacking, and as always, Lars Ulrich just fucking sucks behind the drum set. Where’s Ride The Lightning? That’s the Metallica album which belongs on this list!

Weird to say about Metallica but it felt kind of slower than what I was expecting. Or maybe I just didn't play it as loud as Metallica deserves. Album did have some classics on it though

Kind of repetitive and I don’t think anyone really wants a 10 minute Metallica song, let alone several.

Alright!

Sounds good but something feels missing. OH, the bass is missing. I don't think every album needs bass, but I think this one would be better with some.

No one has ever played as hard or as fast.

While a good example of Metallica’s sound, I was a much bigger fan of Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightning. “One” is an iconic track and there are other good listens. Just not my favorite. Still 10 times better than the “Black” album.

About time I got something interesting again. I was really starting to get tired of these repetitive generated albums. I’ve been hoping to get another metal album as it’s a genre I really want to get in to. This is also the first Metallica album I’ve listened to. 7/10

I loved Metallica as a teen. I do not love them now. This is fine grunting away in the background, but it's pretty repetitive: by far the best bit are the impressive guitar solos which introduce some variety and actual melody into proceedings.

Not bad! One is the stand-out track for me. Good riffs and cool time signature stuff. Not a fan of the mixing and the general vibe though. Takes itself a bit too seriously for how angry it is. Didn't love the vocals either but they fit the music really well.

One is such a great song. I wish I could give this 3.5. But since I don’t think it’s a 4 . . .

cray cray

Album #121, Metallica, And Justice for All ⭐⭐⭐ Either the generator is sentient and playing tricks on me, or I’ve angered the metal gods, because I can’t believe this album came up today. Literally the day after I slated AC/DC’s Back in Black and used Metallica as my go-to example of the exact production style that I dislike. I’m not a Metallica fan. I’ve gone over this before in my review of The Black Album, and yesterday I probably spent far too much time ranting about my dislike of certain heavy metal and hard rock production styles. For me, Metallica are the worst offenders. I just think their music sounds artificially loud as opposed to actually loud. It sounds like a brick wall of noise where there’s almost no dynamic range whatsoever. Listening to a full Metallica album is honestly quite daunting for me because I find that sound so exhausting. But this one surprised me. Let’s get the bad stuff out of the way first, because the bad stuff is very, very bad. There are sections of this album that genuinely sound like some of the worst-produced music I’ve ever heard. I studied sound engineering in college, although that was fifteen years ago now, and I haven’t worked in audio production for a very long time. So I don’t fully understand what’s happening technically, but take Blackened as an example. The moment that main riff kicks in, there’s this horrible scraping, tearing, distorted fuzz that sits right at the front of the mix. It’s heavier than the guitars, louder than the drums and impossible to ignore. It’s almost like every production mistake has been amplified and pushed to the foreground. I don’t know if it’s compression, bad EQ decisions, the infamous lack of bass, or some combination of these, but it sounds dreadful to me. The absence of bass seems to create this strange void in the mix that’s filled with harsh guitar frequencies and distorted noise. Everything gets crushed together into this ugly wall of sound that feels like somebody scraping sandpaper directly against my eardrums. Blackened is probably the prime example. I think it sounds absolutely awful. I’ve got nearly 900 albums left to hear on this list and I’d honestly be surprised if I encounter many songs that sound worse than that. Thankfully, the mix is inconsistent because that particular issue isn’t present throughout the whole album. But whenever it does rear its head, it’s downright diabolical. To think this album cost serious money to make is kind of amazing. It proves that you can’t buy taste. With that rant out of the way, let’s move on to the positives. Because musically and lyrically, this is actually a really interesting album. The songs are long, winding and packed with ideas. It’s a lengthy record, but it never actually felt that long because there are so many twists and turns throughout. One thing I really loved is how dark it is. This feels much darker than the other Metallica material I’ve heard. The performances are also fantastic. Obviously poor Jason Newsted gets erased from existence in the mix, so I can’t really comment on his playing, but I’m going to assume he’s doing a great job underneath all the nonsense. Everybody else is excellent. Even Lars, who I thought was pretty dreadful on The Black Album, plays really well here. The guitar playing is intricate and relentless, and James Hetfield attacks every song with a great level of intensity. The whole thing feels intense from beginning to end. There are also some gorgeous melodic guitar passages scattered throughout the record. Every song eventually crashes back into thrash metal, but there are moments of real beauty here. Not a word I would associate with Metallica. To Live Is to Die is a great example, and One remains my favourite Metallica song. Shout out as well to the terrifying music video for One. That thing haunted me when I was a child. So ultimately I think there’s a phenomenal album buried somewhere inside here. The songwriting is excellent. The performances are excellent. The atmosphere is excellent. But the production choices are so damaging that they constantly undermine the music. It’s a light three stars from me.

Liked “To live is to die” but not the rest so much

Kirk is gay, Robert's gay Lars is gay, but the gayest is James

Heavy - wasnt in the mood tbh

What an interesting album, and the first full through listen of one by Metallica for me. Obviously familiar with their style and overall sound this was an enjoyable listen. The music on To Live Is To Die was my favorite.

i’m a sucker for dark moody rock, but not the screaming horror kind. This strikes a balance and is broody.

Great album

listen, i want to love this more than i do, really. but it just blends into the same monotonous shredding way faster than i'd hoped for. 3 because it's sick af but not transcendent

Not my fav album by Metallica

More of a later Metallica fan as there earlier stuff wasn't as polished. Still this one's got Harvester of Sorrow and One on it, so it's got more juice than most bands have.

i’ve been very firmly anti metal but this album was really helpful in me productively packing to move to the new house. was very motivating. unsure if i will revisit though. also album #150!!!!!

Again: Metallica doing what Metallica does.

OK album but not they're best work

I feel like this is an album I probably should have liked more than i did it just feels very jagged like stop starty. Especially with the lyrics, which took me out of it a lil

Classic Metallica. A little more thrashy than my preferences but a solid album 3.5/5

Everything sounds the same

I would love this if it weren't for the singing.

Grew on me after a few listens

Great metal album.

liked this one. some great riffs, blackened is a great intro track. and yes i know the story about why the bass is mixed into nonexistence but that doesn't mean i can't miss it.

The no bass, the increasingly knotty compositions, the generally darker tone, it being their last album before the Black Album, all of this is interesting in theory, but I find the album (outside of the bookends) just..... slightly boring.

not my fav Metallica, but hey better than a kick in the face from Cody

I've learned from doing this generator that I really don't like Metallica. I don't know if it's because of the music itself or because they always seem to remove any grit from the sound of the instruments. They just sound so tame, like they want to be artists but are scared of getting paint on their overalls. The lack of audible bass on this album is also a travesty.

I don't really understand why I can't get excited about Metallica. I enjoy some riffs, bits and pieces here and there, occasionally an entire song. I've never listened to an entire Metallica album, in fact, looking at my listening history on last.fm, I didn't listen any Metallica at all between 2011 and 2023! I might just not be a fan.

I’m not a huge fan of super long songs

Muy bueno!

It was alright. Inoffensive. Mostly just Metallica stuff you've likely heard before in some way. Some cool solos, but ive never been a fan of.... I wanna say Lars' voice?

Classic Metallica, giving the "Metal" genre its name. Punchy and aggressive.

Heard of Metallica obviously, but never this album. High hopes. Really cool guitar opening. Vocals are fine. Pretty catchy chorus. It just keeps going. Guitar in the back half is so cool. I really like the opening to and justice for all. Cool contrast of soft rock and heavy metal. Just an awesome musical opening. This is a cool song for all nine mins. Cool slow open to eye of the beholder. Much better songwriting on this one. Followed by one which is an absolute banger. Maybe the most impressive guitar solo that I’ve ever heard. So hard on guitar hero. And I like how it just goes right into the shortest straw. This song is classic Metallica. Sick guitar riff on harvester. Frayed ends is fine. Not my favorite but not a bad song. To live is to die is super cool. Awesome opening into really good heavy metal. This is a really cool song for 9 mins. Love how it comes full circle back to the soft rock open. Then it just cuts off. Very cool. Dyers Eve is fine. Nothing special compared to the rest but also not bad. Overall enjoyable album. I know it’s not their best but I’d did like it. 3.4/5 stars

No real stand outs, but I remember being intrigued by the One music video when I was younger.

Ja for pokker!

I liked it more than I thought I would!

Some good crunchy guitars but no really my bag. It all sounded quite samey and reminded me of Beavis and Butthead

Intense album for sure, did enjoy. 6.1/10

The bass is missing. Not subtly buried or tastefully restrained — genuinely, almost completely absent from a record that has more kick drum than almost anything else in the catalog. Whether the production decision was intentional or accidental, the result is a record that sounds like it’s missing a limb. For someone who has spent this entire project paying close attention to what great bass players do — Jamerson, Entwistle, Jaco, Squire — the hollow low end is impossible to unhear once you notice it. Which is a shame, because the ambition is real. This is Metallica at their most compositionally complex — long, shifting, prog-influenced arrangements that move through time signatures and dynamics in ways that show genuine craft. “One” remains a remarkable piece of songwriting, building from acoustic fragility into full thrash assault with a narrative and emotional arc that most metal never attempts. It earns its reputation completely. The problem is that “One” towers over everything surrounding it in a way that makes the rest of the record feel like supporting material rather than a cohesive album. Coming to this as someone whose primary Metallica relationship is with the Black Album — stripped down, riff-focused, and immediately accessible — the density and complexity here creates distance rather than reward. Same landing as Megadeth, same honest reason. A three for the craft, the ambition, and one genuinely great song.

One is the best song by far but overall just not a huge metal/hard rock fan. Still a good album.

Darkness, imprisoning me

They can play no doubt about it. Other than "One" , this entire album sounds the same. It could be a Miles Davis style hard rock album. I respect the game, but just average to me. 6/10 Top song One

Its Metallica at their thrash metal best. One is an amazing song, and the instrumentals in To Live is To Die are an absolute headbanger. That said, for all the techniques used by the band, the album becomes monotonous the further you get in bringing what started as a solid 4 down to a 3.

I always enjoyed some aspects of Metallica. The musical aspects. The riffs are just great, I'm not here for the solos, but the riffs. Sorry to say, but also James' voice is not really it, but it does work for some songs. Track 1 is heavy and chaotic with many different riffs. 2 contains a combination between riff and clean guitar (an element I love in Metallica) 3 has many time changes . I like it. One is a classic. And a very good song. 5 and 6 are heavier track. Good ones though. Great guitars on track 7. 8 is a very moving instrumental piece. Really sent me on a trip. 9 starts with maybe the quickest riff on the album. To sum it up, it's a good album, even a very good one, but it's not really for me today... That's why it's 3

Perhaps to avoid repeating themselves after two incredible albums with a similar thrash sound, Metallica's fourth album makes everything bigger. Riffs are knottier, songs structures are more complex, and everything is longer. It leads to some great songs; "Blackened" and "Harvester of Sorrow" are tight and gnarly slabs of thrash. But it ends up being too much. The main talking point here is always the bass, and the inaudible lower frequency does result in a very tinny sound that saps the music of its power. However, the bigger problem is songs that overstay their welcome. Songs like "To Live is To Die" just refuse to end, and by the end the album's runtime feels padded out by similar songs. It's telling that "One," far and away the best song here, is the most similar to their last two albums. I'm glad they tried something new here, but it doesn't reach their old heights.

Sounds like shit a Lars can’t drum, but the volume of great riffs is absurd. Everything is maybe 20% longer than it needs to be though

Keepin' it simple with a 9-song album, let's get after it. Metallica's foutrh studio album,"And Justice for All," went 8x Platinum, largely to the confusion of many Barry Manilow fans. Starts out quite strong with "Blackened." Metallica lets it be known quickly - turn down your volume if you're not prepared, and turn it the hell up if you're ready to sonically enter a mosh pit of slam-dancing. One of my favorite aspects of Metallica is the contrast between their classic heavy metal sound, and soft, but haunting riffs, as demonstrated on the intro of "One." Overall, the constant attack of guitar is a little too aggressive for my taste. That being said, even an unwitting opera-goer could recognize the beauty of an intricate Metallica riff, one that separates them from the rest of the pack.

Wow, my brother and I were just talking about this album… So crazy that I was looking forward to a metal album as a palate cleanser from Blur, but yeah, I definitely was. And at first it was delivering! I mean I love drums. But somehow this album failed to live up to its promise. It’s too long. It’s too fast. And the mix is wrong? Still. I gave blur a 3 I almost want to give it a 4 just to differentiate. But… no it’s a 3. And the honest Boolean rating is: no. I could have died without out hearing it.

Some great songs. Metallica at their best. However, I feel a lot is pretty repetitive, and dare I say, just noise in the background. I really thought this was going to be a knockout, but I was left waiting for it to be over. Surprised to be sure.

It's funny that heavy drums often help me focus. But not this album. I do like Metallica but have never known when to listen to them. It's not "at home" music, dunno why. I guess at the gym or on a run would be great. But it scrambles my brain instead of doing anything to focus it.

Great opening track but I'm personally not the biggest fan of the choice of sound on this one. The drums are way too clicky and the guitars are somehow simultaniously muddy and dry sounding . Ride the lightning was way more iconic soundwise. Overall it feels very prog and experimental at times while I'm more a fan of their thrashier material. The songs also tend to go on for seemingly forever. Certainly not my favourite of their installations, but still solid and of course very influential for the scene.

MEGAN TRAINOR MIALA RACJE

Denne over Ride the Lightning liksom? Synes mixinga er helt off. Takk for meg.

One time, a friend of mine who played the tuba told me he loved metal because it was the closest a popular genre came to classical music - the fast-paced figurations, the development of theme, the emphasis on instrumental virtuosity… Metal and the harder rock genres have never been the music I gravitate towards, but I appreciate them so much more ever since that conversation. I don’t know how often I’ll return to this album, but I’ll remember how it made my head positively vibrate, and I’ll remember thinking that Vivaldi would be proud.

Definitely Metallica

This is the Metallica album that famously features no bass (cheers Lars!) while also being the first album with their new bassist Jason Newsted, which was totally disrespectful of Lars to turn it the bass all down. Though the album is so much more than just no bass in it. It features their most complex stuff up until that point and perhaps all of their discography, just about every song has twist and turns with it of course being multi-parted and all, with a menacing riff to accompany each 'part.' My personal favourite riffs being the main one in "Harvester Of Sorrow" and that odd stuttery riff that's in "The Frayed Ends Of Sanity." I believe this is the most that Metallica were ever political. With themes of injustice (hmm,) greed, anti-war, corruption and stuff in a similar vein being present. The whimsical melodies in "One" are quite lovely, I am big fan of the Metallica songs that have a similar dynamic, like cut from the same cloth as "Fade to Black" and "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)." Just simply amazing Another song I'd like to mention is "To Live is To Die" which is very triumphant. It's a song dedicated to their previous bassist at the time and just one of the most unique players of bass guitar ever, Cliff Burton. The track just radiates bitter-sweetness from all around. It also features poetry and basslines from Cliff, so he gets a posthumous songwriting credit. I'm stuck in between giving it a 4 - especially after my un-expectantly long review of it - and 3, but I believe a strong 3 will have to make do. As the rating is brought down by loud sharp guitars that dominates for over an hour, which manages to fatigue me and my ears. This is still a good album. Highlight Song/s: "...And Justice For All", "One" and "Harvester Of Sorrow"

Some great songs, and maybe my favorite Metallica, but the production is garbage

Not the best Metallica

i love metallica but this isn't my fav album

Blackened and One are classic ‘tallica jams and they rule. Lars is making some choices as usual…snare sounds thin and weak. The St Anger snare is a direct opposite response to this one. Ultimate Shred Fest.

hay mejores de metallica

Never listened to a Metallica album before Blackned have a good intro. I think it talks about the enviroment and do it in a nice way, but its a very long song(nice riffs) Calm, but soothing riffs in ONE. I thinks this is tired believer ou new believer vibes. Gothic christian lyrics on the third song? And a very soothing sounds too(to live to die is a very true title also) one of the best in the album And i realised that i was skipping songs Good intro in the title album, nice work with the ritm, the voice and Justice for all. I think his voice is like listeing to an ogre singing Eye of the beholder sounds almost spiral? Lyrics talking about the system, but i can see as a wake-up call The shortest straw is basically a song about being poor Harvester of sorrow is okay lyrically speaking, but the intro is bom Kinda ompa loompa vocals in the intro( the frayed ends of sanity). The lyrics are okay(not bad, tired sinner vibes) A good album, but very long. Some songs are really good and anothers just sound alike

Great bangers!

metallica hat bessere songs

The album is pretty good but someone pointed out that the mix is shit. And once you hear it you can not unhear it…

One was the song that got me introduced to Metallica through MTV in the mid 90s. I didn't like them at first, but they grew on me with Load and Reload. Then I realized the error of my ways when I listened to their 80s discography, those are the only truly great albums. The thrash songs in Justice aren't as catchy or memorable as KTA or Puppets, i preffer the straight metal ones. The first half is great and from the second I only really like Harvester of Sorrow. The rest not at all. If it ended stronger i'd rate higher.

I have a cassette of this, but it's not as good as master of puppets

Classic Metallica Album. One is exceptional, most of the rest is quite similar with extended guitar runs.

This was surprisingly boring. Might listen to One again some time, but that's about it.

Not a huge fan of the singing style and I thought the songs went on a bit, but I liked the guitar and the drums. I don't think I'll come back to it, but I did enjoy listening. Fav song: One Least fav: The Shortest Straw

Used to love this album before a couple of dudes in a group chat pointed out the bad mix which sent me into a rabbit hole confirming... yes it was a bad mix. Now all I hear is the lack of bottom and I love bottoms.

Would be pretty good with more melodic vocals but I don't like "shouty singing" so overall it's only listenable.

Isnt my taste

It was after this album that Len Houmous gave Metallica the best of advice of their careers. Quit now, it’s downhill after this. They didn’t listen. They should’ve. 3.4 4/9 One

Likeee

Thrashy metal goodness. Sure, could be bassier, tighter, thicker but it's pretty inventive, weird, and rocks rather hard.

Not my vibe

hart. c

Metallica has a distinct sound and power in their songs that is easily recognizable, but this was not my favorite album of theirs.

Trop bon kif 🤗🤗

Any work of art that conveys the message that capitalistic societies (especially in the US) are shite is of course welcome. But the language of metal (the chainsaw-sounding guitars, the ridiculous vocals, the confusion between a guitar solo and wanking off the guitar) is really not my cup of tea. Of course, one can appreciate the technical virtuosity but, together with the songs being way too long and having way too complex structures, the former also reinforces the feeling that this stuff stems rather from the worst self-referential prog rock of the 70s than from the healthy hard rock/blues rock of, say, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath...

Not as pleasant as it was 20 years ago. But still has its moment

The singing sounds like he's constantly mocking someone. Other than that - not bad.

One of the classics for thrash metal, but unfortunately this is just a genre I can only enjoy if I'm really in the mood for it. There's obviously a lot of impressive technical display here across everything... drumming, guitars (THAT SOLO IN DYERS EVE), vocals.... All top notch, but I've always been one to prefer more melodic songs and variety when it comes to instrumention, which isn't really the point of this genre to be fair, so I could probably give this a 3.5-4/5. Fav songs are the title track, Frayed Ends, and Dyers Eve

Better than the previous metallica album I listened to.

Not my fav, but still good.

Not my fave Metallica album but it does have "One" on it. 3/5.

I enjoyed this - it gave me the motivation to stay up late and finish some work. I felt like a raging badass while typing hunched over about how we can stick powders together better. I think it was the droning repitiveness of the guitars that got me into this state. I was suprised by "To Live is to Die": the intro and closing almost-classical guitar was very pretty but it got jarring quickly with so many disruptive musical elements - still I was hooked.

Good metal, but not terribly remarkable. Probably would have liked in more without a persistent headache, but I don't want to fall behind again.

I’m not much into Metal, but this one is the gold standard, I suppose

3.5 Hard to rate - grew up on this, loved it, but today just sounds like classic vintage Metallica - not a lot of room in my life for this at the moment - but it's a solid solid album.

A clear step-down from their previous albums

2.8/5 A classic album with some great songs but it drags on a little towards the end.

It still holds all the same great qualities of Master of Puppets. However, this time the album is mixed like shit. It sounds incredibly dry. Still through this at times the great songs peak through.

Did not grow up with metallica which means I carry minimal nostalgic baggage. It’s fine stuff but that’s all.

It’s an enthralling noise but also everything that’s juvenile about metal. Lots of musical wanking going on - in particular the tiresome kick drum histrionics

Metallica's strongest album.

Head bangers Fave track: One

I would but this album just to listen to “One” over and over againx

The soundtrack for watching the rugby lads chugging 8 pints before 8pm. Like the rugby lads it is repetitive and monotonous.

I mean, it’s good but I would have to be in a super specific mood to listen to an entire Metallica album.

favorite song: to live is to die vibe: hard times depth charge essay crunch time rating: 56/100 (obvi a really well crafted album and i can appreciate the artistry of it but it's all a bit one note for me. fave song has most breadth)

Metallica my beloved. I could listen to them all day.

Rough Mix TT

A high energy album that swings wide on its collection to varying results

I appreciate the technical skill. But I don’t care for jam bands, and I don’t care for Hetfield’s voice. This just didn’t get me amped up like other heavier rock bands I’ve listened during this project. It’s fine, but didn’t do much for me. 3/5

Pas mal

Mix is off and songs are repetitive at times. Still, I felt my head nodding along to plenty of the songs. Appreciate songs like One and To Live is to Die, since they provide a little more color than other parts of the album.

A guy in my cricket team was a Metallica super-fan. When they announced their first New Zealand show, I asked him what he’d pay to go. “About a kidney” was the answer.

I wish I knew exactly why this is less good than Master of Puppets. It isn't just the thinner production, which makes apparent Lars Ulrich's limitations as a drummer. Nor the absence of bass. The riffs are just as hard on this record, even if they don't sound as full. The leads are great. But, hearing the line "pulling your strings" on the title track, just as those three words appear on the title track of the previous album, highlights an emotional and artistic paucity here. Master of Puppets is pained and raw, a rage against addiction and the pain it causes others. Hetfield's triade against the justice system on this album is not raw or pained, it is petulant and juvenile. Not that adolescent lyrical themes should ever be a disadvantage in metal, but it does suggest a quality that elevates that Master of Puppets that maybe couldn't be repeated. 3 The English conductor Sir Thomas Beecham once described the sound of the Harpsichord as ‘two skeletons copulating on a tin roof’. This is very unfair to the harpsichord which is a charming instrument, even if it lacks all a piano’s expressive potential. It would be an entirely accurate description however, of Lars Ulrich’s drums on …And Justice For All and indeed Beecham’s famous quote sprang to mind early on. The biscuit-tin snare and the horrible trebly edge on the kick do terrible injustice to the roof of that tin shed in which the listener sits. Jason Newsted, infamously, is performing in a different shed altogether. This perverse approach to the rhythm section makes Justice a difficult listen, especially in its context as the successor to Master of Puppets. James Hetfield’s singing on that album - even on the more declamatory tracks like The Thing That Should Not Be or Damage Inc - was practically seductive in its melodic twists and turns, harsh as some of the melodies may have been. On Justice, with the notable exception of One, Hetfield’s melodic contours are as flat as ever they were or would be. Those lines are often a one or two note bark; another rhythmic dimension rather than melody - the top lines of Eye of the Beholder and Harvester of Sorrow wouldn’t have half a dozen notes between them. This is all accusation I suppose but also might work as praise. There is conviction on Justice - an admirable dedication to brutality that constitutes an artistic theme and unifies the album, making virtues of the sins detailed above, and even sort of absolving its weakest moments (Shortest Straw). The guitars are…awesome; in a fully adolescent sense of the term. Great riffs, great solos, terrific whiny bits that sound like 80s computer game music. Absolutely beguiling details everywhere - even in the drums - that I find make it difficult to get bored. It’s not Master of Puppets but it is still Metallica at their best. 3.5/5

Solid album but the lack of bass and the diabolical time signatures is off putting.

The third Metallica album in less than 100 albums. Second song at 9 minutes is immediately off-putting. It feels more cliched and monotone than some of the others - falling into the thrash tropes. It's a shame. The introduction to One is a genuinely good bit of music that showcases their ability beyond just noise.

i get they’re kind of pioneers of this sound but it sounds like such generic metal/rock

The album goes hard but it is too long. A lot of sounds very similar to me.

I found this surprisingly enjoyable.

Fan-fartin-tastic songs. Awful production

Honestly kind of an overrated Metallica album. I like them but this isn't anywhere near their best work though has some great songs like Blackened and Harvester of Sorrow

Not as good as master of puppets. Low 3 I guess.

Really good

For me, I feel ...And Justice For All by Metallica is the lesser of their classics. Technical wizardardy sure, but for me.. it’s entertaining, just not that memorable. For me. So I would say this for me is 3 stars.

This is fine. Definitely not as grand or majestic as the album with the orchestra. 5/10

A second Metallica record in two weeks? I'll get to this eventually but outside of One I'm not sure how great this album is.

it’s fine I guess? nothing about it makes me want to listen to it again, maybe there are other albums of theirs that I’d find more enjoyable

This was the entry point to Metallica for a lot of people my age, thanks to the ubiquity of "One." But this album was when I stepped away from Metallica for a bit, because of all the kids at school now claiming to love Metallica (again, thanks to the ubiquity of "One,") whereas I didn't like this album nearly as much as Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets (or even the Garage Days EP of covers,) which none of those kids had ever listened to. And because it was on MTV all the time, I never liked "One" back then. Middle school is a very dumb time. I have since come to appreciate this album but still don't love it as much as those two, or even Kill 'Em All. The songs run a little long, but it is good. Still a tier below the first three albums for me. I did love Jason Newsted though.

Album #60 Metallica: ...And Justice For All Not really a metal guy, mostly due to my not really understanding what metal is. My whole life I kind of just assumed it was all really harsh and scratchy guitars and screamo vocals, which I can’t stand. But I have enjoyed quite a few 70s albums which have been considered metal, especially Black Sabbath, as they often resembled the hard rock of the time. I think Metallica is in the middle period between when metal was more like rock, then when it became more like hardcore and even rap (nu-metal). I have been known to enjoy some Metallica songs; the band is so big that a lot of them are unavoidable. I often struggle to really differentiate their music, as I just don’t have an ear for it. This album is quite enjoyable, never really annoying, but to me, it seems like the same template of song done well, over and over again. Though I did like the acoustic elements, I felt like those created a more diverse sound. A pretty good listen, I’m open to more metal, but this one wasn’t quite enough to make a fan out of me. Best Songs: One, To Live is to Die, Blackened Worst Song: The Frayed Ends of Sanity Score out of 10: 6.5

not for me
