Reviews (page 8 of 14)
Metallica album with longer songs doesn't work quite as well. Not sure if they were scratching a prog itch in '88. The production isn't great either although there are a couple of great tracks. Maybe just overly ambitious on this one.
#NotMyMetal Metallica was something I really looked forward to listen to, but this was very underwhelming. The guitars and drums do go crazy, don’t get me wrong. But for me there is just this feeling of something missing. I don’t always love the vocals when it comes to Metal music. And tbh these vocals again weren’t for me. But I have to say that with all this critique the album still have great moments. I also get that this must have been super hard to make since it was their follow up to the hit Master of Puppets, so I’ll be looking forward to that for now. A 3 from me.
Cool!
3rd in a row ive heard multiple times. not any better than its ever been. blackened and dyers eve are good, one is great, rest is meh.

Competent. But I just don’t connect with any of the songs the way I do with The Black Album.
I’m not sure where this album sits in Metallica’s discography, but it was alright. The mood is strong, some guitar parts are genuinely beautiful, and the vocals fit the tone. I still much prefer their ballads, as they are great at melodies, whereas much of this album feels fairly generic. "One" is the superior one he-he.
i definitely think i could grow to like it. i understand why people enjoy it, ive just never really been that into Metallica.
This one was okay. Some good guitar melodies. Lacking in dynamics though, everything sounded on the same level all the time. These songs are really long. I feel like they could have gotten the point across in about 40 minutes or so instead of over an hour.
A little heavy for me
So, I’ve been going through some really fucked up shit in my life lately, and I’ve been feeling angry, heavy, and completely overwhelmed by everything. And honestly, it felt almost uncanny that this site recommended me …And Justice for All at exactly this moment. I don’t think I would’ve connected with this album the same way if I wasn’t feeling the way I am right now. I’m not even a rock fan most of the time, so when I saw Metallica on my recommendations, I thought it would be a struggle to get through it. But it wasn’t. Listening to it, feeling the atmosphere, the intensity, the sounds — there were moments when I could literally feel the music inside my head. And I found myself thinking, okay, this is actually really cool. I genuinely enjoyed the experience. Will I listen to it again? Probably not. Is it a five-star album for me? No. But I liked it. It was interesting. I saved a few songs. And more than anything, I’m glad I listened to it. Because even if it’s not an album I’d usually love, it was the perfect album for the perfect day. It matched my anger, my chaos, my state of mind. It felt like some kind of strange emotional alignment, like everything made sense for a moment. So yeah. I really liked it.
Like. They're kind of corny idk.
Is there a bassist here? Sounds like one dude with a guitar on "thrash" setting and a drummer - crazy sparse, and very few melodic hooks to hang a tune on. "To Live is to Die" is good.
These guys are clearly the titans of metal. I also give them props for being local (hey El Cerrito!) and for going to couples, I mean group therapy. This album has some undeniably good grooves, though James’ relentless delivery and their barrage of sound made me giggle. It sounds a little silly and self-important, young men with too much testosterone, or at least trying too hard to seem that way. They are mega influential and I rocked out to some of it. For me, it’s a 3.
Two great tracks, the finale is decent.
Like a McDonalds meal: You know exactly what you're getting, consumed and enjoyed but soon forgotten. 3 out of 5
It’s not for me but was alright for running on the treadmill
Metallica are very silly boys. So many sick riffs, so many daft lyrics. The notoriously bassless mix is such a dumb move that makes the album sound incomplete. All the songs are great, bar One for which the first half is quite meh, so long as you don't fully pay attention to the words.
Wanted to give this a 2.5. I like it better than T. Rex but it isn’t my jam.
This was a cool listen. I enjoyed it enough and wouldn't turn it off, it's just not my taste or something I'd reach for
It’s good, borderline great (a 4 on a good day) but just doesn’t stack up to Lightning or Puppets, and also doesn’t have the hardcore speedy energy of their first album. That plus the weak production makes for a just okay listen overall, despite having some strong songs
Riff to riff I enjoyed this music but it just rarely coalesced into tracks I liked. The cool moments go on for too long and get stale, even if they were cool to start with.
Not exactly my jam, trying to listen pretending I don’t know who Metallica is but that’s impossible lol. Can see has this is a super pivotal album for rock and metal (hearing how some of my faves getting influence from this) loved to live is to die (mostly instrumental) some amazing guitar licks, the tempo on some of these songs is wild! And the orchestral layer on the final track is cool. I also like the political message and theme of the album, lyrically relevant today. Not my cup of tea, but can see why it’s highly regarded.
Divorced Dad Rock hits, there was a lot more instrumental moments than expected. Listening to this stuff growing up definitely has influenced my music taste
Very tight and crisp. Musically not as diverse with a handful of new ideas. Overall solid.
I enjoyed this quite a bit. Not the most memorable Metallica album for sure, but a solid entry. I do enjoy that this album had a bit of a concept. Typical Metallica style for this era. Chugging and power metal solos. Pretty fun.
Album Review 049 …And Justice For All by Metallica (1988) Rating 3/5 …And Justice For All was a tough listen. I see why Metallica are recognised as one of the greats of the genre; their playing is fast, complex and tight but I simply not a fan of their music or thrash/metal in general. The highlights of the album are the couple of down-tempo shifts but ultimately, it’s 65-minutes of angry and that’s a bit too one-dimensional for me.
I hate Lars' drumming. Hi Hat and snare are too harsh. As cited in Wikipedia, the bass guitar (and low end bass in general) is too flat. Makes the electric guitars and hi end portions of the drums overpowering. I do think this is their unique sound and it also be why I have always had a hard time listening to them, I find it to be annoying. However, I have never sat through a Metallica album and I did gain a little more respect for them. Thrash metal has never been my thing. Few Facts 1. One was bands first music video 2. Named after last four words of Pledge of Allegiance 3. Lars sucks Eye of the Beholder is probably my favorite song on this album as far as songs I did not know. The tempo change from 1:40 - 2:00 is cool. One of course is the best song on the album.
I’m just not a fan of Metallica
'One' is an absolute masterpiece without a shadow of a doubt, and it was the only song I knew off the album prior to this listen. I have to say, I'm a bit bummed out that it didn't get anywhere near that level throughout the rest of the album. The musicianship is, of course, great. It's Metallica. It's always great. It's just not as exciting as I was hoping it would be. I assumed this would be an easy 5 star, but I just can't justify a rating that high. That being said, a "meh" Metallica album is still a pretty good album overall. I just wanted a little more. It felt very "samey" between some of the songs.
Actually pretty decent. Real metal niggas I can tell you that. That’s why fools get mad when you wear their shit without listening.
powerhouse of energy; more appealing as it went along
Not my shit
It was meh, Harvester of sorrow was the only song i really liked
Felt very much like the same song in one long track rather than an album. Only thing that saved the rating was that at least it sounded good
I probably won’t be back but I get why it’s a classic. Solid riffs everywhere, kind of corny lyrics. Wildly long tracks for an album this acclaimed in pop culture. Can’t get past the hard rock voice.
I just really don't like this type of metal. It's clean, I haaate this kick sound, and the mix is a little claustrophobic for me. I'm okay with this being in the background, but I just can't score it high for my own taste.
This was fun to finally get around to. While it isn’t really my favorite of the band’s work (Blaming my disinterest in thrash metal), it still holds strong. The mixing isn’t my favorite, To Live Is To Die deserves maybe a bit of a different take. Yet, what was done with One is spectacular. I think it may be a contender for the top five metal songs ever released. At a Korn concert some time ago, my dad and I moshed to a cover.
Musically it gets like a 2 because...it really is the same song for 50+ minutes (and there is One in the middle) and there is zero bass and the drumming sucks. Don't tell Henry. However it is a lot of fun to just turn your brain off and go hell yeah, and One is a masterpiece, so.. If it wasn't SO DAMN LONG it would be a 4. but it's at least 20 minutes too long. Seriously, not every song needs to be 8+ minutes if you're just going to thrash out the same chords for 4 minutes straight of that.
This is my fiancé’s favorite band, it was good to delve in beyond just their top hits.
The instrumentals of each song are very, very impressive. However, it almost feels like each song blends together in a way that nothing feels unique going from one song to the next.
I wish they hadnt sabotaged their own album by turning down the volume of the bass
Apart from the melodic thrash song par excellence that is One, I probably could have reviewed the album after 2 or 3 songs and not missed much. It’s decent, musically it all works and they know what they are doing. But even by the standards of Metallica this feels a ‘safe’ album. I didn’t feel like any of the songs played with the tempo anywhere near as much as other albums, and it was missing the high tempo lyrics to give it gusto. Felt like a session album and one for the most ardent of fans but not a casual admirer of heavy metal/thrash.
Brilliant when they are in their melodic mode, but unsophisticated to boring when they are in full thrash. This album contains the elements that I like and dislike most about Metallica. The album was off to a great start with the intro, then swiftly descended into the high tempo, one dimensional thrash metal that I soon find disinteresting. That said, some moments of brilliance with 'One' and 'To live is to die', both of which contain more melodic elements and virtuosic guitar solos. If there was an album made up entirely of this flavour of Metallica it would have me gushing. Generally a solid metal album with some good elements, but also some blander areas that left me feeling a bit bored after sixty five minutes.
The rat-a-tat-tat drumming really wore me down over the course of the album, diminishing the things that I did like.
Ej, samo 9 komadov! Ampak, album pa skor 70 minut. Hmph. Začetek umirjen ("Blackened"), ampak hitro nadomeščen s hitrim tempom bobnov in kitare. Pa kmal se Hetfield oglasi. Naslednji, "...And Justice for All" je tolk dolg, da je filing k da je bl instrumentalen komad, ker tok cajta vmes mine, preden slišiš vokal spet. Je naslednji a dnd reference? Nope, not at all ("Eye of the Beholder"). Ah, a girl can dream. "Harvester of Sorrow" mi je všeč. Lol, prou vedla sem, ampak sem preverila, če imam prav. V naslednjem, "The Frayed Ends of Sanity", je na začetku ta 'pesem' k jo pojejo v Čarovniku iz Oza podložniki od čarovnice, ki varujejo njen Grad. "To Live Is to Die" je prou lep, kontekst pomaga. In preden se sploh zaveš, je vsega konc.
Good album, though it did kinda blur together for me.
Not my thing and yet I'm well aware of most of these songs, this record wasn't as big as the next one but was probably my introduction to this band and honestly I feel the energy and the vibes but it never connected with me. They really only finally hit their full potential when they cut their hair, dirty hippies!
It's been some years since I've heard One, but it's even better than I remember. I'm not often in the mood for heavy metal, but this would definitely be an album I'd want to hear when I am. 👍One
vocals were fine and way less annoying than i expected, but the real standout for me was the guitar and instrumentation. didn’t think i’d enjoy the riffs this much, even if the songs go on a bit too long.
Black Album, without the hits.
Liked some parts, other parts dragged. As I know Metallica primarily for the rock radio megahits of the albums to follow this one, this album is smaller and quieter and both more intricate and less compelling. It has just the right amount of Hetfield's singing, which is to say not very much, not all the time, and not on every track.
I need to just admit that I will never be able to take this band seriously.
It felt like I was listening to the same song over and over again
So turns out the only song I knew from And Justice for All (One) is because it’s the only really great song on the whole album. The rest of the album is fine, but it kind of blends together and Metallica has made similar stuff that’s more worthwhile
I got a little tired of this after a while. Not bad but it started to sound really samey.
Some songs are good but I cannot for the life of me listen to screamo music for an hour
For me, this is not their best and whilst there are things to like, obviously some decent rffs, and one fantastic song, I just don't feel like there's enough to sustain my interest over other Metallica albums. It comes in at over an hour and feels every bit of that length! Add to that some pretty average production and a distinct lack of bass and you've got yourself a very inconsistent album and one that, for me, is just not on the level of either of the Metallica albums that flanked it. As someone who likes them but isn't a massive fan, I'm much more likely to reach for something else over this.
They really wrote one song and decided "hey let's just do that 8 more times and call it a day", eh?
These guys are talented. Their timing is like clockwork. But all the songs sound the same — 2nd person narratives, threats about something really important. It’s all drama and no humor or humanity here. And the songs are internally repetitive. I know they’re very influential and tgey are masterful technically. That gets them a 3.
I've already listened to Metallica's "Black Album". "And Justice for All" sounds just like that album. The songs are of good quality, and I can see why people love them. "And Justice for All" lacks memorable singles, like the ones from "Black Album". Another mediocre week finished. 3 stars for "And Justice for All".
Every song is 4 minutes too long
Meh.
Not for me
metal is a genre that i consistently say that i like but don't listen to enough. thrash in particular is fun, so for an album that's nothing but riffs it's enjoyable. every song is too long though. like, way too long, especially with how much they don't grow or adapt or shift. the title track i genuinely thought i accidentally restarted it before seeing that i was 8 minutes in to the 10 minute track. the album gets monotonous as it goes on because of this lack of growth. the drums on this lowkey suck shit too because they're VERY samey across the album. they're so far forward in the mixes too which draws attention to how they aren't doing anything at all meanwhile the bass is nearly imperceptible. this whole album is an oddball to me in that they show clear capable chops ("one", "dyer's eye") yet it all feels phoned in, mixing aside.
I am more of a classic rock guy not so much into metal, but I do like some Metallica. This is one of those that will never hit a playlist, because if I don't want to hear it, it's an automatic skip. But if the mode is just right to bang my head and rock out, then I can see me pulling this up for at least a few songs. 3.0
Played in the car while driving north yesterday. I enjoyed it, but Maggie not so sure!
there's a reason why Metallica are the legends that they are. this isn't a genre/band that I typically reach for.
They start so many songs beautiful and melodic and then just turn to drums and crunch and lose me.
Not my vibe
Funny that the first day is for a genre that I don't really care for. I listened to this while making banana bread. It just felt right. It was a good album to zone out to and work on something else, but I was hoping something would pull on my attention. That only really happened at the end of "To Live Is To Die." It was a solid experience, but I don't know if it's really an album I'll be returning to that often.
Not a Metallica I have. Starts lacklustre, picks up on side B. One was a video and song I loved so much back in the early MTV days. Album does have a flat sound. Where's the bass? 3.5 rounded down Heard before? Some Owned: No: 34/134 (25%) Will I get? No
I fw it.
This is like a 3.5 or something, realistically. It's starting to click more after the second listen, but overall it's just... a bit too long, both in album length and track length, to really stick there. A pretty good sound though, even if it sometimes blends!
Wasn't expecting a Wizard of Oz sample in The Frayed Ends Of Sanity. Not mad about it. This was good, not what I usually like to listen to so don't think I'll listen to the whole thing again but some songs had me like !! Yeah !!! Defo realising that I prefer a short song Added to playlist: - Blackened - One - The Frayed Ends Of Sanity
Did quite a lot to push Metal into the mainstream, but this album never really did it for me. Metallica has always had longer songs, but 9 songs on a 65 minute album is a bit silly. There are a lot of great songs here with brilliant Guitar solo's especially. Production is famously ass and having a bit more Bass would've been nice.
I respect it but it’s not for me
This album blew my mind as a kid, but as with a lot of people I lost my interest in Metallica somewhere between the black album and reload. Listening back to this now, I think I rated it too highly the first time.
Not my cup of tea, however, I do think the album is pretty good.
The first CD I ever bought. Have listened many times. Some fun tunes, but no my favorite Metallica album. One is the reason I bought it, because of the amazing guitar solo.
Not really a bad album, just nowhere near as good as the previous two, and the mix is awful.
not my favourite metallica album don't have a lot to say since it hasn't given me much to begin with, it's just fine nothing special, it's kinda all the same over and over except one (yeah of course i picked the mainstream song hang me for it), to live is to die, blackened and maaaybe just maybe the track title if it weren't that long
Good
I remember loving this album, but not as much any more. Probably partially because Lars Ulrich became such a cu%&
Not for me unless I'm in a heavy rock mood, it's good for it's genre, a little to bland for me
A great album marred by very poor mixing. No justice for the sound engineers! However, this is like the third or fourth best Metallica album and not one of their more culturally impactful releases. Why is it here?
It’s got some parts that I quite like but overall not a huge fan
123/1089 This genre just generally isn’t for me. I find the vocal and lyric style off-putting and contributes to the fatigue i get after listening to too much metal/hard rock. However I can appreciate the skill and the expression in the instrument playing, To Live Is To Die is actually my favourite song of the project and has no vocals. Of the 2 Metallica albums I’ve heard, i definitely preferred S&M So overall i can see the appeal objectively, and am glad i’ve listened to it, it’s just confirmed that this is not my taste. 59/100
my first Metallica album. Not nearly as good as Master or Metallica. Rhythmically, it's pretty basic. 3/5
I'm not a metalhead, but this album was alright, some insane drumming and driving guitars. Vocals a little rough and ready though
Great Metallica album but average metal album.
I am not a fan by any means. I recently listened to the black album and it was good. This seems much more heavy metal than the black one, more raw. Well it was earlier. From what I can gather, there are some fans who were/are not happy with the newer sound. This happens in all genres. I am still no fan, but I could probably listen to this again. A happy 3 stars....
Not a big fan of 5 min+ songs, but love a good guitar riff
It's fine, hopefully I'll like one of the other Metallica albums more.
The classic Metallica sound is all there just not the songs. It’s all a bit samey really and not near their pinnacle, Master of Puppets
Not my favorite type of music but this might be a new go to for when I’m angry. My biggest gripe with this albums is that many of the songs don’t flow into one another.
long and loud but like the guitar solos
It's okay not totally my style
It was while supporting this album that I first saw the band play live . It is without a doubt technically astute, but with the exception of "One", it is one of my least favorite Metallica albums. It is my opinion that the only albums from Metallica that belong on this list are RIDE THE LIGHTNING, MASTER OF PUPPETS, and METALLICA (THE BLACK ALBUM). ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL doesn't move the genres they play in forward, nor did it move the band's sound forward, it just played on previous elements of thrash and prog rock that the band had exhibited on previous albums. It is the first album without any complete songwriting and performance contributions from bass player Cliff Burton who had died tragically during their RIDE THE LIGHTNING tour, so perhaps it was to be expected that this is more of a grief album (which might explain the complete absence of the bass guitar lines in the mix), before the band could allow themselves to move on emotionally and sonically into the next organic phase of Metallica's existence.
Album 946 of 1089 Metallica - ...And Justice For All (1988) Rating : 3 / 5 Not really my go-to genre, but I can appreciate good musicianship when I hear it. I’ve always enjoyed the shredding guitars that metal bands are known for, and this one definitely delivers plenty of that. Beyond that, though, it didn’t really grab me in any lasting way. The songs tend to blend together a bit - long, complex, and packed with riffs that sometimes feel more technical than inspired. It’s kind of a “riff salad,” as they say. Still, I can see how this album hit hard for its intended audience at the time. It’s aggressive, intense, and full of energy, which I’m sure was exactly what fans were looking for. For me, it was a solid listen, but not one that’ll see much repeat play.
Having listened to Master Of Puppets recently, really for the first time, and being blown away, the comparison to this album is actually quite stark. There's a whole shift on this album. It's more polished, songs are slower and groovier, much more Metal, less Thrash if that can be said. Unlike Master, I do know this album inside and out having owned it on tape as a 12 year old back in like '92. Thought it was the best shit back then. Not as much nowadays. I do totally hear and appreciate how transitional this album is for the band. "Blackened" is a great start, but things move comparatively slower and more straight forward after that. "...And Justice For All" goes on way-too long, as do many of the songs on this album. Listening to "One," I actually feel like it would almost fit their older sound (without the polish). Played out as it is, "One" is maybe the best track. The Pirates of the Caribbean intro of "The Frayed Ends of Sanity" is some Disney shit. "Dyer's Eve" is pretty cool, though the angst-at-your-parents theme is kinda weak. This album is very-much the precursor to the Black Album and the end of their Thrash era. It's hilarious (and tragic) the story of the mixing on this album being so tinny 'cause Ulrich got all over it and fucked the levels up, and his ego wouldn't allow it to be changed. Seriously feels like if this album wasn't missing that body in the mix, this album would go down better. The turning point for the band. Definitely prefer the older shit.
Looooved this album when I was 11 years old. In 1992. Needless to say, it hasn't aged well. The funniest thing about listening to it now is how out of place most of Hammett's solos sound. It's like they decided to go for the less thrashy, more math-and-groove rock (which they would get right three years later on the black album), but he hadn't yet figured out how to tame the wild, noodly arpeggios to fit the new mood. The other unexpected aspect I found bothersome was Lars' drumming. I learned to play drums while listening to Metallica in the early 90s, and I always loved his metronomic work with hi-hat, kick and snare. So it was surprising just how masturbatory it all sounds now. Like, he just had to turn every...single...beat into a clinical exercise. Again, by the black album, he'd figured this out, and the economical but pounding (and masterfully recorded, as opposed to this hot auditory garbage) drums of that album make this style seem like a kid showing off. Which Lars always was, I guess. Anyway, I'll give it a strong 3 for nostalgia, and for Blackened, One, and To Live is To Die.
Ret godt faktisk
I’m in the camp that says the first three Metallica albums are amazing records, 5 stars the lot of them. This one doesn’t connect with me as much. It’s a step toward their 90’s sound (best realized on the Black album) and in some ways shows interesting growth, but it’s hard not to compare this to their first 3 efforts. It’s no “pop” record, but it does sound a bit more commercial than their first three. It’s less atmospheric and epic too. It’s an enjoyable listen, but not one I’d have put on this list.
It must not have been easy for Metallica to find their feet musically after Cliff Burton's death. The bass lines on this album are practically nonexistent. I still don't know why, whether it was intentional or just a sick joke in the form of bullying towards the newcomer Jason Newsted, I don't know. There's a masterpiece here... "One," and that's a fact. However, it's the only real hit on the album, and everyone knows that metal albums in general need hits to support the more "obscure" tracks that demand more attention... not that there are many truly interesting tracks here, but it's true nonetheless. The album, however, doesn't sound lazy, as the band would later sound in the 2000s. On the contrary, every track exudes the energy of a band trying its best to make up for the loss of the main creative leader, and in one of these attempts, with "One," they found the direction they should take for the next albums... and three years later, the Black Album comes, and everyone knows the story. 3 stars seems fair.
Undeniably good. Holds up to time. Not really my taste.
first time i'm listening to a metallica album all the way through! lets gooo - i can't unhear matt and try parker in the first song - and the second song - and the third song - also sounds like strong bad from homestar runner?? - "do you hear what i hear" YES and its matt and trey parker/the chapman brothers, etc - instrumentals are bangin though, especially "one" (heard before ofc, i think it was on guitar hero?) overall i get why metallica is as famous and beloved as they are, but i think the amount of parodies of metallica i've heard over the years has kind of taken away from the magic a little bit for me
This is fine - I understand why it is so influential, but the writing is not all that great. The sounds are phenomenal but the lyrics are rather poor. They fix this issue with Black.
A very good album, Blackened and One are the hits of it. Though, except those two songs, the other are good too but I already don't remember them.
I know it well. Listening again anyway. Some good parts but meh
Wow these guys really sound like Megadeath. It’s always fun trying to guess which words he going to put the olde euuhhya ending on. After One I think the album starts to get a bit stale and sounds really similar. Don’t know if the latter songs really needed to be 9 minutes long. 6/10
Metallica has never really done it for me. I enjoy them when they come on the radio or on my shuffle, but not something I generally seek out.
its fine idk im just not a fan of metalica, its just the most boring plain jane ass metal to me
My boyfriend loves Metallica and was so excited to listen to this, but other than the shredding, it’s not doing it for me. 3 stars bc of Lukas only.
Cool shi
Really enjoyed some songs on here, but definitely just breezed through me at points. Master of Puppets just stuck with me a lot more
2.5, rounded up thanks to One
Not Metallica’s best, the rhythm section is to quiet. It’s missing the drive and energy that you associate with the band. The album demonstrates the skill of all the members but the mix lets it down.
This was fine. Like every other Metallica album I’ve heard, it’s very long. But there are some shining moments throighout.
Standouts Eye of the Beholder One
Not bad but also not exceptionally good
I respect it but metal just isn't my thing bro
Overall this album feels pretty bloated, with every song over 5 minutes long, and most are filled with riffs and shifting tempos. The compositions are mostly interesting, but it's so tiring to sit through one after another. On top of this, the mixing is really terrible. Infamously, this is the album without bass. More than that, I hate the sound of the drums throughout. They have this weird small clicky sound that is borderline annoying. What is it with Metallica and their drum mixing woes? It's like there is no reverb or room tone, and the whole production sounds really flat, no "pop" or air to breathe. "One" really is a masterpiece and is the standout on this album. Otherwise, most songs are good but similar, and I just felt really tired as the long songs slogged on. Maybe it's just my personal preference. It just seems like Metallica is better for radio, in isolated singles, rather than sitting through over an hour of terribly mixed tracks that overstay their welcome.
As expected for Metallica, decent riffs, guitar harmonies, solos. Solo on Blackened is quite melodic in places, reminds me of Dragonforce. More reminiscent of Black album (Enter Sandman) in places (And Justice for All). More emphasis on rhythms (Eye of the Beholder) Not as much raw enery as MoP The Frayed Ends of Sanity starting with that chant! Also has some metalcore style harmonies towards the end. Rhythm riff on To Live Is To Die feels like if could be on a Rammstein album. Best track (other than One) - Blackened, The Shortest Straw, Harvester of Sorrow 3 stars - except for One, other tracks aren't so memorable
Good album but I think Metallica have done better. Favourite track: One
Not great not terrible
Enjoyed this one, though not as much as some of the other early albums. Appreciate the guitar noodling and enjoyed One.
Not their best work, all a bit samey. 7/10
Doesn't have the stand-out songs that the black album does. Sadly this leads to the same-y-ness to shine through even more. But still good fucking metal at it's core.
Honestly, I only vaguely listened. It is what it is.
They famously shat the bed with the production on this one. some enjoyable moments
Not bad
3-4
Voiton vei kuitenkin (tahattomasti?) progeiset rummut.
This is a solid album by Metallica. It's somewhere in between the thrashiness of Ride the Lightning, and shows signs of their newer sound that they did well on the Black album, but i prefer those two albums to this one.
# 576 : ...And Justice For All …And Justice For All - A solid thrash metal epic that overstays its welcome Only nine songs, yet over an hour of relentless thrashing guitars and pounding drums. ...And Justice for All is kind of alright, but it’s also kind of exhausting. Metallica are undeniably brilliant at guitar solos—of that, there’s no debate. But they’re less good at… well, most of the other things that make music music. Maybe that’s harsh. This is a great example of progressive thrash metal from arguably the greatest metal band ever assembled. It’s technically impressive, ambitious, and occasionally thrilling. But the lyrics, the delivery, and the overblown song lengths create a fun-void that’s hard to ignore. “One” is the standout—a beautifully crafted piece of work that shows what Metallica can do when they rein it in just enough. The rest? Solid, but not as enjoyable as their other albums. Verdict: A solid thrash metal epic—just one that overstays its welcome. Best Track (if you must): One – a haunting, powerful track that earns its reputation. Closing thought: If justice is blind, this album is deafening.
It was okay.
One is an incredible track. I could really care less after that. I just don't like thrash metal.
My a huge Metallica fan but enjoyed the album. Don’t think I would go out of my way to listen to it again
I relistened to that Judas Priest album we got already & I think my preference is just faster metal. I’ll put some Metallica in my rotation but I find I’m wanting it to just get goin’ cuz when it does it’s really good. I’ll be interested if the other Metallica albums offer any variation to this, which is pretty much what I expected from them.
Chugga-chugga-wug! Chugga-chugga-wug!
1. Blackened - 7 It's a good sound with decent sound. My biggest issue with the track is how absolutely rigid the pace and structure of the lyrics are. They feel confined into a tiny space between the head drumming and quick guitar riffs. When the track changes tone the lyrics are still very rigid in their construction despite being given more space become the focal point of that part of the track. 2. ...And Justice For All - 10 Just an all time classic. The riffs, the solos, the vocals, the lyrics. Perfection. 3. Eye of the Beholder - 8 Decent track and lyrically very well written. Instrumentally it's an excellent sound with a superb sound all throughout the more than six minute song. 4. One - 8 Amazing opening four and a half minutes with a superb intro. Absolutely awesome guitars. The tone change isn't great but the guitars riffs and solos in the heavier final three minutes make this a solid and enjoyable track. 5. The Shortest Straw - 3 Lyrically not great. Feels like a forgettable track on the album and just not anywhere near the quality near the previous three tracks. 6. Harvester of Sorrow - 7 Standard heavy metal track. Not bad but nothing to rock your socks off. Does have an amazing guitar solo in it though. 7. The Frayed Ends of Sanity - 7 Lyrically it’s okay. Another good-but-not-great track. Sound of the instrumentals is good. Bass drum towards is the end is awesome. Fantastic guitar solos on the end as well. 8. To Live Is To Die - 2 Really meaningless intro. The track then immediately gear changes with no build up or need. It then just kind of meanders around with no purpose containing riffs and drums that eventually fade into the same thing we had in the intro but again with no come down or need. 9. Dyers Eve - 3 The same problems Blackened have exist on this track in the chorus. The track doesn't really get enjoyable until about two minutes in but the riffs between verse and chorus and too quick and too packed. Average Rating: 6.11 Adjusted to 5-Point Scale: 3.06 Rounded Down: 3 Stars
music for wife beating session. ‘one’ and ‘to live is to die’ are good, all the other stuff are just the same song with minimal variations
I prefer their namesake album.
As a punk with friend with friends who were more into rock/metal when this album was released, I remember it as a unifier. Listening to it many years later, I can still see that, but it is way more underwhelming than I was hoping it would be. Don't get me wrong, there are some riffs that absolutely shred. The songs that lean into speed metal are amazing and what I remember loving about this band back in the day. They have held up, even by the standards from the bands who took their lead and ran with it . I good album, punctuated by some truly great moments.
Of all the pre Black Album Metallica albums this is my least favorite.
Hey, this has that One song on it!! The title track is a bit different of a vibe than many of songs on previous albums. The drum sound gets on my nerves on this. Not sure I really noticed that before. It's not that I can't hear it, but it just sounds strange to me. Might be the guy playing.. I don't find this nearly as awesome as the previous three. There are some killer riffs in it, so I'll give it a 3.
I had this album when it first came out. Each individual song is solid, a couple are really excellent, including One. But as a whole, it’s stuck in neutral. Never really quite got the super dry production aesthetic, feels it washes some of the depth away, and while it defines Metallica’s sound in this era, I never loved it. Also always thought the lyrics were a little too on the nose. Never spoke to me. It’s probably more of a 3.5 star, but I’m not ready to round up.
Again, like master of puppets, it's got good melody and rhythm, but the mixing and mastering makes the instrumentals feel like they lack punch, power, and impact. 3/5
I’m sure it was innovative at the time but just sounds a bit repetitive to me - the same heavy guitar riff and drums for an hour
This lead me a little down the "missing bass" rabbit hole. I wasn't consciously aware of it; but I'll always go for "Master of Puppets" over this one, probably for a reason.
Here, there, everywhere and it wants to punch you in the face. By the end, it kinda bleeds into one though - sorry Lars
Not a huge fan of Metallica. And what I knew most about this albums is that there’s no bass in the mix. Gives it an odd, ‘thin’ sound. But I adjusted to it over its runtime.
I can acknowledge that this record specifically was pretty ambitious for Metallica at the time of release. The group refined their thrash metal sound, highlighted by faster tempos and longer, more complex compositions. The thing is, when listening to this album in a vacuum, everything just sounds repetitive. The thrashy riffs never really deviate from song to song (outside of a select few) and feel limited. Pretty disappointing, as I was expecting more from an album that contained the iconic "One".
I love rock and I love metal but I think I can admit that I don't like Metallica. Is it even heavy? Or if it is heavy, it isn't anything else. Still, better than some of the nonsense on this list
3.7
Kivan kuuloinen laulajana. Mikäs siinä
As high a 3 as it gets. Do I like this? Quite a bit, but it's very samey and chugga chugga. Apart from One and... Justice To Live is to Die is the only thing that stands out fot me. I listened twice too. The production being so famously flat doesn't help.
Yeah, didn't hit for me
3.5/5
Takes me right back to the Guitar Hero days. Like many men of a certain age, I had a love affair with this album. Back in the day I would've tried to convince you that no album could ever be as heavy as this one, that the opener was the greatest opening track of all time, and that that Lars was actually a great drummer (he's fine, I mean no offense). Nowadays, while I'm not completely sour on this record, I'm pretty set in my belief that it's far from Metallica's best, and that the dynamics are virtually nonexistent across the runtime. Each song on its own does a great job showing you who Metallica is, but AJfA never really comes together to be bigger than the sum of its parts.
Classic, but I have to be in the mood for it.
What a weirdly mixed album
Not a fan, but I enjoyed some tracks.
Enjoyed but a bit monotonous at times. Wanted more creativity like one
It got a little repetitive because the songs were so long, vibes still good though
Nawet ok.
Pretty solid. Sounds the same after a while
Drums: exorbitant
Surprisingly enjoyable. More progy then expected. A bit of melody in with all the chugging. The sound is so difficult though. There's the no bass thing, but also the guitars sound buzzy and paper thin and the drum sounds are like a toy or something.
Not a heavy metal guy
one carries i love that song quite a lot. the rest of it isnt solid metallica
Second Metallica album I’ve gotten on here and it sounds so similar to the first. Most of the songs on here are more than listenable, but i wanted more out of it.
Interesting but not what I'm usually into.
3 out of 5. Technically good musicianship and some bangers here.
So aggressive—please chill out. That guitarist is putting his life force into his job. People actually listen to this? I feel like im in an action movie training scene. Jesus christ this first song is so long. Ok, im 4 min into the first song. Now this sounds like the guitar they play in an anime fight scene. This guitarist must be so tired from carrying this band on his back. Why is this making me anxious? This definitely sounds like the intro to ZOM:100. Skipping to song two. Much calmer. Thank god. Guitar still slapping. Ok the addition of the drums was much better on song 2. Really enjoying the 2 min reprieve from that trash singing. I spoke too soon. I do not like this man’s voice. These lyrics are very accurate. Justice is gone. Seems like not much has changed from 1988. You know what? Hell yeah. Tell them king. Yet again, this guitarist is the best part of the song. This is essentially angry classical music with words Song 3’s lyrics are great; i wish the singer sounded different (anything would be better!) Guitar is great still, skipping to song 4 Guns??? Are we back in nam? Ok guitarist popping off again with those little trills. I see you, man. Oh, we are back in nam. Oh noooo Tf you mean ‘back in the womb’ This poor veteran. We shouldn’t have even been in nam. Who knew metallica could be so depressing? OK GUITARIST POP TF OFF. I googled what the guitarist looked like in the 80s. He is lowkey my type (medium ugly). Finished the album. It was ok.
If I was new to metal this would probably have hit harder
Great music but I don’t think I’m that much of a metal guy
It cant hold a candle to the first few Metallica records, but it's actually much better than I remembered. On a good day this might get another star.
Lots of filler here for me. Great musicianship throughout, but trying to stand next to an absolute masterpiece like “One” makes a lot of these tracks seem like maybe they are at the wrong party. A seminal metal album that deserves its place on this list, but not as solid as I remembered.
Good album. Always liked Metallica but never heard this one all the way through. The mixing is a bit off, its kind of flat and I feel like it could be more dynamic, but still nice to sit back and listen to some virtuoso percussion and lead guitar. Title track hits too close to home in 2025. One is one of their best songs, love the iconic opening riff/solo and the song's progression. I did find a few songs boring though, its definitely not as consistently good as Master of Puppets
Album No. 0002 on my list. I was familiar with this album before, but had not listened to it for some years, so this was a nice second item on my listening list. Unfortunately, I'd have to say that ...And Justice For All is probably Metallica's weakest album from the 80s. Its production is indeed very flat, and for whatever reason, there is too little bass. In turn, there are plenty of riffs and long, complex guitar parts. The whole album sounds like a show-off of guitar-playing abilities. That does not mean that there aren't any good songs in there ("One" being the obvious candidate here, but "Blackened", "Harvester of Sorrow", and "Eye of the Beholder" belonging to that list as well). Some songs include interesting lyrics as well. And in the end, impressive guitar skills are certainly something that should be appreciated as well. But especially compared, to its immediate predecessor, Master of Puppets, this album did just not produce as many catchy metal uber-hymns. So in the end, this is a 3/5, although I have to admit that it's maybe just the comparison to its predecessors that lowers the rating, rather than an "objective" assessment.
Chugga Chugga Chugga is what's written on a note in the Metallica exhibit at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. I do love some palm-muted chugga chugga, but not for an hour. As everyone says, the mix is really bad. Low bass with up front, mostly tinny drums. But that's not why you're really here, right? It's those chunky, thrashy guitars. Good on them for all of those insane quick changes, starts and stops. Those guitars rip it up. Just needs a little more change-up throughout. One is one of my favorite rock songs ever. It's got dynamics. ("Johnny got his Gun" is a great and horrible little movie.) Listening to this all at once, I give it a 2.5. Listening to a song or two at a time would let me give it a 3.5. Sot's getting a 3, but "One" gets a 5!
Metal
Repetitive songs, I feel like a middle aged dad listening to it. But there’s one or two gems
Its got a heavy beat which you expect but it lacks in places. The Riffs are there and tracks like One which is a favourite of mine are outstanding but that is One exception. It Thrashy which you expect but musically metallica are better than this. its okay however the Black Album Metallica and even the live S & M version with strings and an Orchestra offers a more sophisticated and generally better version of them. Yes its Metal but thrash thrash thrash can be lazy and with songs like One and others they are better than that.
Probably not my favorite Metallica, but still pretty good.
My coworker really loves Metallica. I tell her I also do, but it just doesn’t do it for me. I like metal, but I just don’t find them that sick. Also I checked at one point to see how much was left, thinking I must be halfway through the album at this point. Turns out I was halfway through the second song. Just a frickin barrage on my brain.
Metallica's first album with Jason Newstead on bass. Over the past few years I've heard that the mix on this album intentionally drowned out his bass work because of some weird Cliff Burton honor thing or something wacky. For whatever reason, it's ALL guitar, barely hear any bass on this album at all, in fact the only bass I hear is Lars's annoying bass drums. Look, I love Metallica a lot, and this CD was the first ever CD I bought with my own money when I got my first CD player in 6th grade. I love the album but it is TOO fucking long. Every song is 5 minutes or longer. Not good for jamming in your ride. I'll be fair and say the songs are good, but length plays a factor into my rating for a song. I like 5 minute+ songs if they're fucking amazing, and my favorite song on this album got a 5 star rating, the only one, Harvester of Sorrow. The rest are solid metal songs. 3.35/5 stars = 3. I feel bad for rating this one 3 stars where as the other Metallica albums I've rated have been higher.
Hour four of a band I don't really like. This is challenging. The musicianship is really good. I like the time changes. It's more thrash than pop metal, which is a good thing. I actually like this album better than the other two (black and double live album).
Not my favorite album of theirs but One locked in the 3 for me.
Crap
Probably my favorite or second favorite album by a band I just can't bring myself to care about. 3/5
If "One" was the only song on this album it'd be 5/5.
As a Metallica fan, this is my least favorite pre-Load album. It's just too bloated. As James Hetfield said, they were trying to be too proggy and write really long complicated songs. Sure, One is great, the rest is pretty same-y, or at least loses my attention because it just. keeps. going. That being said, this is certainly better than a lot of records on this list.
Alles lijkt op elkaar. Niet mijn ding. Muziek is opzich prima
A little long for my tastes. Good, not great (or very good). It's no Black Album. "One" rules. Top Tracks: "One," "Blackened"
Just What I expected from Metallica
I'm not a Metallica fan, but I can appreciate their contribution to the Metal(TM) genre. I knew I'd eventually have to listen to some Metallica albums for this project, so here we go... A lot of this album feels like it's sticking to bread & butter metal - a wall of crunchy guitars and drums with some lyrics shouted over the top. That's fine, I don't have a ton to say about that. Where the album gets interesting is the moments like "...And Justice For All", "One", "To Live Is To Die", and "Dyers Eve" where they weave some classical guitar interludes into the standard metal structures. I don't know Metallica intimately enough to know if this was new for this album or not, but this being their first album nominated for a Grammy suggests it probably was. I do appreciate the irony of them losing to Jethro Tull; after listening to this, I feel like the two aren't as far apart as I would have thought. A lot of the guitar solos sound like recycled Van Halen solos, but maybe that's all part of the design. This feels like a bid to bring Metal closer to the mainstream, and I think that's exactly what it did. A quick look at Metallica's history of award nominations doesn't show anything before this album and a lot from here forward. This was Metallica's big crossover moment, and that's not nothing. Overall, I don't think I need to spend more time with this album, but I'm not as annoyed as I thought I would be to listen through it.
one banger
Product of its time
Not my thing tbh
Not a bad Metallica album. Not my fave though.
1. One 2. Harvester Of Sorrow 3. Eye Of The Beholder
This is good and could probably push to 4 stars with repeated listens, there just was a lot of similarity across the tracks.
A little disappointed, some of these songs sounded very similar and were too much for my soft ears.
Was looking forward to finally getting a Metallica album, only to be left slightly disappointed. One is an awesome track and the riffs were cool, but there's not much else to the album.
Classic
It's just very edgy and faux tough guy. Still, I felt a little tougher than before.
I think I liked Pantera more than this. One is amazing, but the rest kind of fall flat. Hot take: Metallica was better after going for the arena rock genre.
I didn't like this as much as Master of Puppets. One is a good song, but the rest of them sounded repetitive and are more aggressive than I like. This is my third Metallica album out of 200 which seems like a lot.
Day548 - i didn’t like it when it came out, then it grew on me and now i can listen but only a couple songs are agreeable to my ears
A little redundant. Songs could have been shorter. I knew One going in and that was my favorite song on the album. I did not like The Shortest Straw. They said the same thing over and over.
Picture a Metallica album, that’s And Justice for All. Well played, gets samey after a while. One is a still a tune though
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would.
Classis heavy, vocals are eh, but I can sense the passion in the instrumentals. Sucks that the recording doesn't feel it gives it justice, sounds flat and unexpressive. 3
First impression pre listen: As someone who's enjoyed Metallica quite causally over the years this has never been my favourite album from them. If we disregard the memes about them mixing out the bass, my main complaint about this album comes down to how seriously it takes itself. Even on the best songs on this thing they sound like they're trying a bit too hard. However it is Metallica after all so the riffs and solos are gonna shred like hell. As it is a relisten, I know that I'll at least enjoy most of it. Also I can't really complain when I finally get a rare metal album on this list. Individual song notes. Blackened Off to a great start with a very memorable guitar riff. The drums are really flat. James Hetfield's vocals are perfect for this sound. There are a few cool images in the lyrics. Awesome solo. Decent. 3.5/5 ...And Justice for All Really like the intro. Love when the heavier section comes in to contrast with the more soothing opening guitar. A bit too edgy. Kind of don't love the chorus, lacks a certain kick to it and the lyrics are kinda dumb. The overall groove is pretty good, but the track takes a bit too long to change it up. Fine guitar solo. Goes on for a bit too long with an aimless instrumental section. Ends strongly. Fine. 3/5 Eye of the Beholder The intro has a great buildup with the fade in. You can actually hear the bass on this song which is a plus, though it still doesn't sound great. Decent chorus. Wonderful guitar interplay. Fine. 3/5 One There's an argument to be made that this is their best song. With the iconic intro and the harrowing lyrics I can definitetly see that, though I still don't agree. The anti war messaging is strong, and the chrous is very effective. Especially with the heavy distortion supporting the vocals. Love the interplay between the two guitars. Awesome breakdown near the end. Ends with a blazing guitar solo, which is just really satisfying. The lyrics are a bit heavy handed, the drums sound just kinda empty and I find James Hetfield's performance on the vocals a bit too much at times. While the song is still good it's in my opinion a bit overrated. Good. 4/5 The Shortest Straw The main riff is kinda boring, kinda lacks the desired energy. Very standard chorus by Metallica standards, doesn't really do much to stand out. The bass sounds like the sound you get when blowing into an empty bottle, it's very distracting. Cool instrumental bridge. Average. 2.5/5 Harvester of Sorrow This song kicks ass. Love the intro, and the main guitar riff is so effortlessly cool. The background effects really add to the fantasy of the track. Dark and ominous lyrics. Great guitar solo. Love when the intro riff comes back into the song at the end. Great detail. Great. 4.5/5 The Frayed Ends of Sanity It's a fine enough Metallica song. Has all the building blocks to succeed with its particular sound. Great thrash metal riffs and a solid solo. The lyrics are whatever, but no one is here for lyrics anyway. The longer instrumental sections provide some very satisfying grooves in a stimulating high tempo which is really fun to listen along to. Decent. 3.5/5 To Live is to Die Very pretty intro. Really like how structurally different it is from the rest of the tracks on the album. Has some great progressive metal moments that are really interesting. The overlapping guitars make for a good partnership, and are especially powerful when played in tandem with each other. Kinda meanders a bit towards the end. The spoken word is also a bit weak. Doesn't have the intended effect of being dramatic. Goes on for too long without introducing new ideas. Fine. 3/5 Dyers Eve I appreciate that it gets straight into the action. It's heavy and it's raw. Love the speedy tempo. Awesome energy. Great solo. I like the sudden ending. Decent. 3.5/5 Final review: In a bit of a mixed discography ...And Justice For All stands out as one of the better albums in there. However out of the five big Metallica albums this one is in my opinion the weakest. While the riffs and solos are up with their best there are issues in other parts of the process that brings the quality down a bit. The way the vocal parts are written is one of these factors, where they often feel like they stay in one singular lane making them feel repetitive. You also have the infamous mixing issues where the way both the bass and the drums sound have been critisized to death by now, to the point that it's become a bit of a meme. And if you listen closely you can see why. There are also songs that do feel a bit aimless on here, that while still having cool parts here and there just seem to lose the plot completely after a while. And while all of these issues do remain, this album also has some really strong parts. The lyrical writing is at points very evocative, and some songs contain very vivid images and portray strong emotions. There are also moments that evoke very strong atmospheres where you can really feel the dark and ominous powers they're trying to paint with their instruments. And as you'd expect by Metallica the energy and drive behind these songs do reach high levels of infectiousness to the point where the riffs are impossible not to nod along to. It remains a bit of a mixed bag, not great, but not awful either. As a plus there are live versions of these tracks that blow the studio versions out of the water. So if the production gets on your nerves at least you have that. 3.5/5 begrugingly rounded down to a 3/5.
While some sections of music did tweak my interest, overall, I'm just not a metal fan. I recognize Metallica's importance, but I don't appreciate their music.
Technical and mainstream metal. It rips, but not as hard as Megadeth. I don’t feel like there’s too much that’s special here, even One (shout out guitar hero III) is one of their less good hits IMO. It doesn’t even fully have the boomer with a bench press in his garage sound. My personal top Metallica songs: 1. Master of puppets 2. Fade to Black 3. Enter Sandman 4. Their cover of Whiskey in the Jar (my all time bench press PR was to this song) 5. The Call of Ktulu (live w/ San Francisco symphony orchestra)
Complex & aggresive album that showcases Metallia's technical prowess and darker, more political themes. It's raw and intense, but famously known for missing depth with a thin bass mix.
honestly, it's a great metal album. To a certain level, the tone on the guitars and James Hetfield's voice makes me zone out between songs until the guitar solos
3.5
Interestingly, this would be fairly far down the list of metal albums I’d choose to listen to, but it appears to me today like a crisp Sir Bobby B (Canadian 100 dollar bill) in the pile of steaming manure I’ve been wading through for 11 months now. Criticisms of the production and lack of bass sound already pushed aside (for now) I’m thrilled to be able to have some riffs and grit ahead of me. Step aside Kraftwerk. Outta my way Drive By Truckers. It’s time for music. At last. Blackened - One of the last great thrash songs penned by this band. The blistering opening, the driving riff during the verses and the sick breakdown near the middle make this an excellent piece of late 80s metal. I don’t always love his vocals but that opinion is coloured by what they would become rather than everything here. This song is a monster. …And Justice for All - All that clamouring for metal and I’ve forgotten how to review it. I hate even putting it on the same scale as some of the other stuff because I’d just rather listen to this much of the time. I will say this song has interesting lyrics, and some excellent moments but it’s let down by being far too long and meandering at points. Eye of the Beholder - Metallica became really really good at writing “catchy” thrash and were a big reason I, like so many others, ventured further into metal from this point. It’s a catchy track, but it’s missing some of the punch I expect. Where I am now, this song is just ok. One - I mean everybody knows this song. It’s played so well, the lyrics are still somehow relevant, as the rich march to war on the backs of modern day serfs in increasingly screen-laden armour. Thankfully it’s all in defense of uhhh well you know, there’s the uhhh hmm. Anyway. The aggression at the midpoint hits so hard and this song goes down as a “pop/metal” classic. One of those songs that sacrifices nothing and ends up receiving plaudits from the mainstream regardless. The Shortest Straw - I never noticed the Pantera-esque feel that this song has. Metallica really did have so much influence on how metal would sound to the masses for years and years. This song has a pretty sweet groove and keeps that righteous anger. Harvester of Sorrow - How does one harvest sorrow. I’ve been playing a ton of farming simulator so I am intrigued and will be attempting to sow some sorrow seeds upon my next login. Not a huge fan of this song’s plodding. Frayed Ends of Sanity - I thought the beginning was cheesy but man did this kick into gear. One of my favourite songs from this project. Very riff heavy from start to finish. Classic. To Live is to Die - I think they got really good at their instruments and wanted to show everybody. A lot of bands do that. Whilst technical playing can be fun once in a while, this instrumental “song” is a whole bunch of nothing for me. I like the talking portions near the end but this is bloat. Dyers Eve - Prepare your paints. Prepare your clothes. Hell. Prepare your finest ties. For the grateful dead enter Milwaukee tomorrow, and we the noble tie-dyers of the Midwest must tie until our fingers bleed, for it is dyers eve. That’s all I got. Listen. Pretty intense closer. Enjoyable and heavy. I’ve gotten too philosophical today. It’s metal. It’s not that complicated. If an album was new to me and sounded like this? I’d probably break my keyboard giving it five stars. Which raises questions about this whole endeavour, but I digress. This is a good album. There are meaningful lyrics aplenty, expert playing, and catchy, aggressive songs. There is also needless bloat and some pretty tinny production at times. This album does feel thin to this day. Metallica ruled the 80’s from a mainstream metal perspective and their influence is as far reaching as it gets. The end of a classic quartet of albums. Metallica didn’t go quietly into the doldrums of the 90’s, but maybe they didn’t go quite loudly enough. 3.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Blackened, One, Frayed Ends of Sanity
2 Metallica albums in one week! This one is slightly better than the self-titled but still not as good as earlier albums. Seriously where tf is the bass?
This has a couple of really good songs on it but I found it less good than the self titled album
Probably skipped over this one in the past cos while the cover art goes hard, it’s not comparable to ride the lightning or master of puppets. Some incredibly lars drumming going on. So lars. Secretly math rock? Is math rock not a thing?? Idk What are Hetfield’s political beliefs????? Huge question I will not be seeking answers to as this bangs. Why get into it?! One was always confusing to me but it works really well in album context. Ooooh long clean intro oooh lovely. Just found out Hetfield’s current political views are “divorced.” Love Harvester of Sorrow chant at the end. Frayed ends of sanity is goofy. V goofy! Fade from acoustic intro to half time riffing on to live is to die rocks. Best solo on the record? That or One idk Really glad they go out on thrash note, slow sad ballad would be odd at this point. That said, this album is a bit one note? Isn’t all Metallica? I have a tummy ache rn. If the scoring system allowed half stars this would be at 3.5 x
Ah, 'tis is my youth. When Justice came out I was already going deep into the Death Metal hole. After Master of Puppets I'd found the joys of Slayer, Venom and Celtic Frost, now I was plunging into Napalm Death, Morbid Angel and Bolt Thrower. I remember being at the stadium gig for this album and thinking how it's not working for me any more. This album has thinnest of thin soundstage, buried bass and the snap of the drums is really annoying to me. I still can't understand why they ruined this album with sounds like this, and, AND, I listened to the 2018 remastered version. I shudder to put on the original one. I recommend checking out "...And Justice for Jason", a fan made edit with enhanced bassline.
There are much better Metallica albums
Prefer the black album but but this one was worth the listen 3/5 #albumsky #musicsky #musicchallenge
Yup, this just really isn't my thing. Can't believe there are 4 Metallica albums on here. Quite like One and Justice for all but as far the rest, meh!
Some solid songs, some really long and uninteresting ones (shortest straw! Shortest strawww!)
From a musical point of view this, like a lot of the metal albums on this list, was a fascinating listen. Time signatures, variety of theme, musicianship etc. But it just lacked enough cohesion in the songs to keep me interested. Ultimately it just lacked a few songs.
Not bad
Great album, but somehow lacking in soul. The previous 3 had it in spades, but it's somehow more "by the numbers" here. "One" is a truly great track, but so many of the solos across the album reminded me when first I heard them of Tetris music, and I can't get that out of my head. It's only a 3-star. Its predecessors were monster albums, and deserve to be placed on a pedestal. Its successor, despite being so radio friendly, is also a cracker, but this just falls a bit flat.
Chica yo que se, One está genial. El resto es un 5. Vamos con 3.0
One step closer to poppier Metallica albums
Not my favorite Metallica album. A lot of the tracks felt disjointed and not crisp
Too heavy for me.
Fun Metallica sounds if that’s what your looking for, but not sure if the social themes carry through
I am not learned enough in Metallica to differentiate this from the previous Metallica album, so, 3 stars.
Goddamn, this thing is an hour? I can see why they made their butt-rock turn away from thrash - this feels like when hardcore bands stopped doing as much hardcore because it got boring - and yet it's still an hour. And hten all the songs are like 6-10 minutes long? Jeez. I dunno, this has the problem that a lot of these middling albums have where it's good all the way across, but not great, and it doesn't do anything to hold my interest for all the good it is because it's too damn long. Whatever, put a couple of songs on and PR your deadlift, but compare to Sepultura who had, in my opinion, a lot more musical variety, a tighter runtime, and shorter songs. Feels like less than the sum of its parts.
I enjoy rock but I did not favor this album, but I understand its footprint it had for other artist.
3 estrelas
As a bass player, I wanted to hate this album, and while I do think the album sounds very thin, there's some really cool guitar parts on here.
The lack of bass kills most enjoyment I get from this otherwise amazing album
Couple of good hits on this album - most songs sound the same, unfortunately.
Kyllä Puppetsi on Puppetsi. 3/5
Jotain tuntuu että jää Metallicasta aina puuttumaan. Meneehän se mut ei ihan kuitenkaan.
Meh, the Black album is better. One is really the only standout here.
Lots of guitar riffs. Lots of them. Feels like metal equivalent of a jam band. Still rocks
It rocked. I don't much get the HELL YEAH BROTHERRRR feeling that’s satisfied with simple melodies so long as they're built of power chords. So it dragged by the end. Bet a live show would set me straight.
The anti-Amy Winehouse: all substance, no soul. The album screams truth from a concrete bunker. Admirable, but not loveable. "One" is a banger though
I just had another Metallica album 2 days ago. 😵💫 This one not quite as grating.
Just noise and aggression for the most part.
Oh dear. Another "Classic Metal" album. Not really different from hundreds of other heavy guitar rock LPs from soundalike. Uninspired, turgid, poorly produced. I was counting the minutes until it ended.
3.5 Stars (and that half star is mostly because of One)
One is iconic, and I enjoyed the increased politicization in focus. Riddled between the Grammy controversy and fucking over their new bass player, it wouldn't be a good Metallica album without controversy
un poco casposete, pero par de temazos
2.5… I’ll round up
It's trying to make a statement too much. Too much anger in their sound, not enough refinement and what you would call a "work in progress". I did like some of the ideas in the songs but they weren't executed with expertise and therefore lacked attention grabbing skills. I'm not a big fan of metallica
I like my metal well mixed, this ain't it. Jason deserved better, the songs are allright, however due to it not having bass at all it can be a tiring experience. Highlights: The first 2 minutes of One, the acoustic bits of To Live Is to Die. Had potential to be rated higher, but listening with a headache isnt good.
Not really my thing. I like tracks on other albums.
This album sounded like any of the previous metal albums on this list. Rate a 3 just to acknowledge their accomplishment.
This record still has some of what made Metallica great in the early years and on Masters of Puppets, but they are starting to wain and you can tell they are moving away from the thrash metal. The mix on this record sucks, no low end at all. It seems like that is a well documented nit that has been picked though.
And I thought The Cure was dark. 3 stars.
It felt repetitive to me
Heavy metal isn’t my thing but I could see the appeal
Way better than the black album. Still not that great though.
I used to play this on continuous loop in high school. This album was my introduction to Metallica. Going back and listening to this hits different now. It's not their best album at all. It often sounds unpolished and directionless. I get the feeling that it's almost as if they were coming to the end of their song ideas and were denying that something needed to change. Additionally, they sound like they were on the verge of becoming a parody of themselves. I know hardcore metal fans feel like the next album was the beginning of their downfall. But, at least they found a new direction and started to sound more polished.
Ugh. Is this the album where Lars was a giant tool and demanded his drums sound like shit and to delete the bass parts out of existence? (it is!) This is one of the worst mixed albums I have ever heard if not the worst. I don’t care how groovy, metal, in the pocket, whatever this album is, it sounds like shit. I am not a fan to begin with but this was an incredibly painful hour. Even the remastered version is ass. I don’t get it. I guess the songs are okay. The parts where they are not just three minutes into the same chord grooving and when James is not singing I like most of it. I’m sure if Josh Homme made these I’d think they’re great, but this is just not my brand of big muff distorted chugs. One stands out as a genuinely good song, shout out guitar hero three. Definitely sounds a lot like Kyuss at times, a band I enjoy, but Kyuss has well mixed albums. I’m torn between a 2 and a 3. It really isn’t so bad that it deserves a 2 and I fully understand the appeal. Just know this is the lightest three possible.
This album could've had a much better listening experience if they actually tried to produce it well. It sounded sooooo flat. I'm not a huge Metallica fan, but I guess I understand the attraction a little bit. They played in Nashville this weekend, but I didn't regret not going to see them. I only regret not seeing Limp Bitzkit and Pantera as the openers. I'm giving this a weak 3. I don't even really like One.
I do like these songs for the most part, mostly as background music though. One rules and Kirk's guitar solos are crazy on this album, but damn this mix is still terrible. Justice for Jason! 3/5 wouldv'e been 4 if the mix didn't sound like it was created for tin cans only
Almost confused by how few thoughts I have about this album. I'm almost comically incapable of taking most metal seriously, though, and a meedley guitar solo while Hetfield yells about pulling the shortest straw is genuinely funny. Is this album good? Probably. I didn't mind listening to it or anything.
Goes pretty hard but man the production and mixing on this one is just bad. This could have hit so much harder if the bass was mixed higher. It's so treble-y. I really like the technical playing on this one though. It's more interesting than some of their other stuff. I feel like I should like this more than I do but I've never really been into thrash and I think I've been spoiled by KG's thrash metal since it's way more psych and much less... conservative sounding.
No bad songs but each one out stays it's welcome, low 3
Great playing obviously, just can't stand his voice at all
I like Metallica, but I dare say they suffer from the same syndrome as the Red Hot or AC/DC All songs sound the same
Pretty solid metal, had its highs and lows but enjoyed all around. Liked the high energy it brought but it’s also my first Metallica album and definitely was different from their more popular songs
Quite a bit more 'progressive' than I'd expect from Metallica - multiple genre and tone shifts within songs that last a minimum of 6 minutes. The songwriting and guitar work are still great, though some of the production is a little too tinny for my taste. Best Tracks: - ...And Justice For All - One - The Frayed Ends Of Sanity Worst Tracks: - To Live Is To Die Rating: 6/10
