Reviews (page 8 of 13)
Far from their best work but still an enjoyable record. 3.5
I don’t love this as much as L.A. Woman or The Doors, but the band’s blues-y psychedelia is always welcome. 3.5?
Pretty good album overall. Not really my thing but I can see why it’s up there. A good mix of blues and rock.
I totally get why some people think this is awesome. I, unfortunately, do not. Honestly, I find it quite boring. And not all blues rock, mind you. Just this. Just The Doors. Morrison sounds so disinterested it's laughable - honestly, everyone does, besides the guitarist. Can't stand the keyboard. I enjoyed the second half of this album more than the first. The better songs were Land Ho!, The Spy, and Peace Frog. I'm still giving it a 6/10 because I think it would be way better live, and I don't think it's the worst anyway. Just considering how acclaimed The Doors are, I always expect more from them than I get.
Featuring the criminally underrated talents of John Densmore.
Pretty good
Pretty meh tbf 5/10
A good album, certainly a cut above some of the average rock of this period I’ve had on this list (Traffic, The Youngbloods, The Mothers of Invention). The album has an enjoyable, bluesy sound, but overall nothing stuck in my head that strongly. A good 3, but not quite memorable enough for more.
Not bad, and definitely better than ‘The Soft Parade’, but also not their strongest album either. Some of the bluesy and rockier tracks are really solid, particularly ‘Roadhouse Blues’, ‘You Make Me Real’, ‘Maggie M’Gill’ and ‘Peace Frog’, though the more psychedelic ‘Waiting for the Sun’ is a highlight too. As these picks suggest, I found side one to be quite a bit stronger than side two. I’ve also never really liked ‘Morrison-as-crooner’, so ‘Blue Sunday’ left me especially cold, and several other tracks (mostly on side two) are perfectly fine but nothing special. Just shy of 4 stars overall.
Meh.
Musically I really liked it. Lyrically it seems like Jim was trying just a little too hard to be far out
Waiting for the Sun was actually my standout track, loved it’s punchiness. Peace frog obviously another classic. A couple other good tracks but overall I think the second half of the album falls flat compared to the first half. This sits a bit higher than a 3 but not quite 4 level for me.
For me, the Doors have 3 classic records wich are LA Woman, Self-Titled and Strange Days. Everything in the middle is kind of mid. Though every Doors record contains a classic song. I will say out of the 3 records after Strange Days and before LA Woman, Morrison Hotel is the better one. It’s a return to form from the blues and it has some nice songs. Roadhouse Blues, Waiting For The Sun and Peace Frog are really good. But the rest lacks depth for a Doors records. It’s kind of generic.
this was good! not enough to turn me into a doors fan or even to get me to explore their discography but i had an overall positive impression and i even did a little dance a few times so that’s nice.
When to listen: a hazy, warm day with steaks on the grill. The Doors are good, this album is... fine.
That one song is pretty great, and the cowboy-blues aesthetic serves them pretty well. Morrison is juuust starting to steer into Cosmic Prophet mode, so it’s decent. But, y’know, it’s still The Doors. And I hate the fuckin’ Doors.
Giving this album a 3 is generous, and I like the Doors a lot.
Some psychedelic blues rock. I’m not the biggest Jim Morrison or The Doors fan. Peace Frog is cool.
From one listen: not in the same league as their debut, but definitely enjoyed it more than L.A. Woman. I admired the musicianship especially. The Doors always seem to have exciting little riffs and flourishes. It also did not feel to me like they resorted to the blues too much on this album, which always sounds lazy to my 21st century ears. I heard some interesting songs on Morrison Hotel which I would like to hear again. I noted that it was from one listen as I felt to do it justice I ought to revisit it, but there's 1001 albums to get through so one will have to do.
Wasn’t bad but wasn’t memorable. I know some of the doors songs but most of this album was new to me. Reading other reviews it sounds like their earlier albums are well liked, so hopefully those come up and are more interesting.
It’s not the type of music I’m used to listen, but it’s good
The doors clearly have a vibe and sometimes it's great and sometimes it's not and overall just makes them feel very average i suppose. It's not bad it's not great, it's decent clean music that matches with my black coffee, used vintage clothes, book reading lifestyle.
Enjoyable listen a little too bluesy to be in my day to day rotation - high 3
It's Fine.
It was good but not great.
This album took me to the bar and ordered boilermakers for us
Fun but probably won't listen again.
It’s ok. The songs all sound the same to me. Nothing special to note.
Groovy album -- classic Doors! But I HATE the cover album. It freaks me out. Why is Jim Morrison just standing there like a mannequin??? It's uncanny
Never listened to this one. It starts well with a bunch of fun and energetic songs (including the famous ones) but the second part becomes frankly boring (with the exception perhaps of Queen of the Highway). Such a number of fillers in a 37 mins album can't be regarded as a great achievement... Why the hell this project includes this record and not Strange Days is beyond my comprehension...
The original Geese
very good not the best doors album tho 5/10
holy fuck how does it go on for so long but aint so bad?
Very Bluesy album, some songs I like, some I don't. Not their best album, but an interesting listen. 1. Blue Sunday 2. Pace Frog 3. Waiting for the Sun
Classic.
6/10 Best songs: Ship of Fools, Land Ho!, Maggie Ma'gill Not sure why the exact middle album by this band is on the list, especially when it has no big hits (and literally nothing I or my parents have even heard of), I guess because it charted highest in the UK? idk. Some of the songs have good beats, some are dull, the lyrics are whatever. The big standout for me is actually the terrific bass lines in many of the songs - Land Ho!, for example, has a pulsating, forward-driving bass that is irresistible. Overall pretty good, with the music itself being a standout.
The Doors are weird man. Jim Morrison is a human bottle rocket, when pointed in a safe direction, he’s fun and harmless, but when lit and left to his own devices, he’s a danger to himself and everything around him. I feel like Manzerak, Krieger and Densmore are the glass bottle, desperately trying to keep Morrison contained and purposeful. But once that genie is out, there’s always a show, explosive, brilliant and gone far too soon. -TomB
L.A. Woman came up earlier in my reviews to date. Of the two, I prefer this album. The Doors occupy that space for me where I must admit, somewhat sheepishly, that I am more a fan of the hits than their works as a whole. I bought the double CD Greatest Hits collection many years ago. It was one of my first CD purchases. I haven't particularly felt the urge to go beyond that. Morrison Hotel has managed to pique my interest in that regard, though. Outside of the leadoff hits, Roadhouse Blues (one of my favourites) and Waiting for the Sun, there are plenty of intriguing tracks, including Peace Frog, Ship of Fools, and The Spy.
Are the Doors a band you just outgrow as you age? Or do they have some decent songs, but then a lot of filler? Is what made the Doors unique the organ sound of Ray Manzarek paired with the dorm room poetry of Jim Morrison? Is Jim Morrison mailing it in on this record? Was he a good front man with limited vocal range? Had Jim Morrison lived, would the Doors have become another classic rock band paying tribute to its past? Did Jim Morrison grow and change as an artist over the time the Doors were making records until his untimely demise?
Roadhouse blues Waiting for the sun Maggie M’Gill Queen of the highway
lovely record, doesn't hit the highs of some other Doors records but enjoyed it
When I heard the first track, I didn’t think I’d like this album but the second track was really great. I was not expecting any synthesizers in this album. I do feel like there are some filler tracks. But most of the tracks are actually really good. I can easily see how this album could be influential for a many rock acts, I can definitely hear some Red Hot Chilli Peppers in here
Actually a big no
I would be a lot more into the doors than I am if not for the organ. I really dont care for the organ sound. But some of these sound need it. But you cant argue with some good music and I like this album.
-Much more blues than I had expected, before listening I couldn't name or Guess a DOORS song I've just seen a lot of shirts -Reminds me a lot of songs my Grandpa sings, but he's always been big on blues -Not sure if it's my cup of tea, but it does make me nostalgic
I love "Roadhouse Blues". Interesting that a lot of the album is very blues/rockabilly. Only a couple of tracks are psychedelic-sounding. Also interesting to hear that this was an intentional shift in direction because their previous album had more strings and a lot of their fans saw it as a sellout/pop album. But also interesting to hear that at the very start of their career they did a lot of blues, so it wasn't an entirely new thing. I'm torn between 3 and 4 for this one.
I don't mind the Doors, but this album is a lot of good without much great.
Good Doors album. Couple of classics. Traditional electric organ sound.
I find Jim Morrison's voice to be quite uninteresting. Mumbling and grumbling.
Solid rock album
Cool intro Peace Frog was phenomenal Blue Sunday was peak
A bit too much organ for my taste, generally nice.
Sounds like average guitar pop to me. Probably a banger back in the day.
purest of mehs
Sneaked into a 3 by being short. Only 2 good songs--Roadhouse Blues and Waiting for the Sun--but rest of it was over before I was hating it
The Snores. Perfectly fine background music, but nothing really grabbed me. For all of Jim Morrison's raging id, it comes across pretty tame to me.
Cool! Some of them were really sick, others were just kinda cool
First introduction to The Doors, fun instrumentation, looking foward to hearing the debut
It's pretty good but I don't have the will to listen the Doors.
I'll agree you should hear the s/t debut but not sure you need two more doors albums if you aren't already fan, or sick of the hits from classic rock radio .
Everything anyone has ever said about The Doors is true. I do wonder if their legacy would have died with Jim if it wasn't for Ray.
cool, i liked 5 of their songs in this album
This feels a lot more... straightforward than most Doors albums? Like idk their stuff usually has this grandiose that wasn't present here which is weird cause this came out right in the middle of their discography 6/10
q album chato
I didn't hate it, I didn't love it
I had previously had their first album so feel my expectations were high with this. However, despite trying to not compare the two and remain as impartial as I could I just didn’t enjoy this one. I felt the tracks blurred and it quickly faded into the background for me. Not one I would listen to again
Roadhouse blues
Nothing too exciting or groundbreaking. I feel there are much better albums from the Doors
I don't know if I've heard this entire album before, but I don't feel like I have. And maybe there's a reason for that - not many of the songs stood out for me. It still sounds like them, if not a bit more subdued overall. - Heard before? Maybe not? - Will I listen again? Probably not - there are other Doors albums that I like better. - Does it inspire me to listen to more of this artist? Yes. The Doors are one of those bands that I forget about until I hear them again, and then I'm reminded of how good they are. Notable songs: Indian Summer, one of my all-time favorite Doors songs.
An okay album, although by the end all the songs sounded the same.
I quite liked the combination of blue rock and psych/prog rock, but I didn't think it really meshed. All the songs were one genre or the other, but never really both. Favorite Song: Waiting for the Sun
Uhh i guess bro. Not bad tbh
It was ok
Love this version of the bluesy style they were famous for. Roadhouse Blues and Peace Frog have always been on my top 5 Doors songs, and the album never really faulters. Starts great, ends great, great deep cuts like Indian Summer and Waiting for the Sun (shouldn't that come on Waiting For the Sun album?) If only some of the middle songs were better it'd be a strong 4 songs, but it's a good 3 for now.
The Doors are insanely overrated. Jim Morrison was a hack poet.
🌟 A great album to start with. More bluesy than expected: yay!
Instrumentals were fun and I do like Morrison’s voice on this, but it was just kinda boring. Nothing monumental
did not move me. blue sunday was my favorite song though.
This was good but not their best work idk why it’s on here instead of their self titled
Cool!
Loved it, cohesive in style but varied enough to keep interest. I didn't think I liked the Doors but turns out I do.
It feels weird that this is considered a return to form for The Doors. While it clearly signals that their time as a creative force wasn't at an end, in retrospect it feels more like a warm up for the far superior LA Woman. 3*
Yep, more Doors. Waiting For The Sun is cool. Really dig that one. Everything else is kinda alright.
mi idea era escucharla de una pero me colgué y lo dejé a la mitad así que ahora que terminé de escuchar las que me quedaban me gustaron: you make me real, ship of fools, the spy e indian summer. las que menos me gustaron fueron waiting for the sun y land ho!. quedé sorprendida con algunas partes porque no escucho the doors por lo que no tenía idea con lo que me iba a encontrar pero en general me gustó!!
Pretty solid
As much as I appreciated The Doors in my teens, today I don't bother about their music.
I do not get the appeal. A mix of psych rock that was done better on Strange Days, drunk local band blues that was done better on LA Woman, and a few silly ones. Peace Frog is a banger though.
It was okay.
Enjoyed over 1/2 of it but some of the tracks were a little mundane
Peace Frog probably the best. Enjoyed the funkiness. Waiting For the Sun and Blue Sunday stood out too. Indian Summer has The End vibes which is a ok with me.
Roadhouse blues is class. The rest is pretty standard doorsness. Not the best doors but not the worst
First 4 or 5 songs are really good, but starts to fall off towards the end of the album. 3.5 stars
Lyrics bland, music good. Like the mix of keyboards and guitar Better in headphones I cant say more than decent though. Standard boiled egg, nowt with it.
Wasn’t in the mood to listen to this so maybe it wasn’t fair Was bang average for me never really got into the doors
This one kinda hit after the guitar class
It’s alright. It starts out amazingly with Roadhouse Blues which just goes OFF, but I feel like like the quality dips significantly after Peace Frog which is a shame because there’s still like 2/3s the album to go.
This was great. But not that great. lol 3 stars.
Best: Blue Sunday I liked many of the songs while I was listening to them but found this album fairly unmemorable as a whole, I kept having to go back and listen to tracks over again, more of a me issue than an actual reflection of the album, I think. Some of the other reviews suggest this album is boring/slow, but they are wrong. I do find the doors can be a bit eerie/hypnotic at times but I enjoy the ominous vibe. I liked how bluesy this was and loved hearing the electric organ across the tracks especially that tremolo effect on waiting for the sun.
In turning to straight blues, The Doors forgot what made them interesting. The first four tracks rock pretty hard, and Peace Frog in particular has flashes of Morrison's sinister weirdness, but the remainder are fairly forgettable.
Some great ones on here. A back to our roots record. Channeling the Wolf without ripping him off is tricky. They do it here. Still, no one's dying full of regret for not hearing this one. First Album is cannon. A must. It shows they can rock with Break on Through so MH hotel not needed for that. And LA Woman has some of this leftover blues vibe.
acho que nunca ouvi nada do the doors, não era isso que eu imaginava que fosse ser dá pra ver bem que é um período de transição entre blues e rock mais moderno; bastante parecido com o get back dos beatles; especialmente porque o vocal e baixo em algumas músicas remete bastante ao paul mccartney músicas que eu favoritei: - waiting for the sun - blue sunday - ship of fools - queen of the highway
Æ, þú veist, bara... bleh? Rann bara í gegn. Samt ekkert lélegt.
Just don't like this type of rock
My favorite song is the spy.
Not the biggest fan of the Doors, however I really liked the first part of tha album, really fun
I hadn’t listened to this album in probably 30 years. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to side 1. Side 2, not so much.
Didn‘t know that one. But some songs on it i really liked.
I was excited for a Doors album, always a band you hear off but I haven't actually listed to. I enjoyed it and likes the lyrics. Alot of that keyboard vibe that by today's standards is reminiscent of carnivals, but very 70s aesthetic.
Roadhouse Blues is a hell of an opener, and Waiting For The Sun a great follow-up. Peace Frog is probably one of the most underestimated songs, making for a great side 1. Unfortunately the second side isn’t nearly as compelling, with diversions into sea shanties and Jim blathering on about Queens of the Highway and Indian Summers. Overall, pretty good, but not their best
Eh. Liked the instrumentation with the organ, the blues feel is nice but gets old a little bit. Not bad but I don't think I would return to this album.
its just not for me but they something here
Good album Solid songs
I started this album and was immediately surprised. I thought that I didn't know any of the tracks on this album but I knew Roadhouse Blues. Then I was expecting experimental rock with lots of noodling and organ playing. But this album is a full on R&B album. Lots of 12 bar blues riffs. You can hear some of the organ but it's not a front and central as I was expecting. (2.755)
When this album opened with Roadhouse Blues, I thought it was going to be a favourite. The rest of the album didn’t really live up to that opening track, but I emptied listening to it.
Bit of a mess by this time !
meh
Vond het saaier dan verwacht. Maar opzich wel leuk
Yea was okay
Enjoyed this a lot more than expected. First half of the album was very song. Second half not so much. I realised Muse nicked tor riff in Roadhouse Blues for their track Psycho.
That 70s keyboard blues hits, but like most 70s bands I miss the variety and lyrcism that comes later on in the evolution
This album was a bluesy one with smooth instrumentation. In fact, every instrument came through cleanly and blended nicely, so a very good quality recording. I liked how there were bits of experimentation sprinkled throughout (particularly midway through Land Ho!), and how some songs had ethereal qualities (Blue Sunday and particularly Indian Summer). Overall, it wasn't bad, I'm just normally not a big blues fan, mostly because of the abundance of organ and keyboards. I think my favorite song was Waiting For The Sun.
Yessss! I’m listening to “waiting for the sun” while making coffee and looking outside also waiting. Such an influential band whose tragic end instantly put them into classic status, raw unfiltered talent burned bright and quick , not too different from Kurt Cobain Enjoying this album so far , raw and loud blues and rock and roll 🤘
Bluesy, a bit repetitive
Listenable, good vibes. Gives me the feeling of being in a bar l/restaurant midday somewhere in cowboy country.
It's alright. Nothing that stands out. 3/5.
Some bangers, but not what I think of from the Doors.
as is the danger with this website sometimes, i've built up a backlog of 60s/70s albums so today i'm just wading through them. and like.... this is ok, but i had a Doors album given to me literally two days before this so i'm almost resentful of the fact that they're being hurled at me AGAIN. i liked the other album better tbh.
I’m starting to believe that not only am I the only one left who is listening to these albums, but definitely the only one who will keep reviewing. The Doors was my first concert ever. Albeit, James Morrison was dead- Dave Grohl filled in on the tour and did amazing. I think they played maybe 6 songs that lasted 2 hours hahaha They have better albums than this,
This was a solid album with only the one single. It grew on me. Liked Songs Added: Roadhouse Blues Peace Frog Maggie M'Gill
so fûhlts sichs mabey ah zum en cowboy si und i glaub da losed so alti wester men
I like when The Doors are more proto punk and less hippies. This album has some moments I loved but in occasions there were does cringe Doors moments. Will probably never listen again.
I was hovering between 3 and 4....hard to decide. I love Jim's raspy voice, and in general the style...but many of the songs were too 60s rock 'n roll influened for my taste.
Inte helt insatt i lyricsen men i nån sång sjöng de typ ”she’s a good girl making babies for him” vilket ju inte var så kuligt va?
I enjoyed this album, but not more than the self titled debut. This album felt more bluesy, than experimental which sounds good, but I like them using sounds you don’t hear often. The vocal performance throughout was really good and there were moments where I was like wow, he really did that.
The Doors were one of my favorite bands for a good stretch of my late-teens and early-twenties and some of these tracks are dear to me, but I think there are at least two Doors albums that clear Morrison Hotel. The first half does a lot of the heavy lifting, but I admit I found myself enjoying Land Ho much more than I remember.
Fun psych blues stuff. Have you watched a movie set in 1968 (anachronistic) to 1974? Then you've heard this album before. Organ goes crazy here. Favorite Tracks: Roadhouse Blues, Peace Frog, Indian Summer, Maggie McGill
Not bad! ★★★
Very bluesy, decent album
5/10
Of all the Door's albums this one comes in at #4 for me. It's good, but not quite as good as the others. It starts off awesome with Roadhouse Blues, but kind of just goes downhill from there. Too much blues, not enough electric organ and Jim Morrison wonkiness. In a weird way, this is almost too polished for the Doors. I did notice some songs where they were trying to recapture their earlier sound with mixed results.
Got worse as it went on, was maybe a 4 to begin with, now probably a 3. First few tracks reminded me of the minions soundtrack.
3/5 - A bit dated, however the overall quality of the songs within the albums are quite decent. For example the guitar in "you make me real" is really fun to listen to. The lyrics could be more interesting but are still very suitable for the songs within the album. I just wish the album felt less "static", in other words I wish there was variation in the structure of the album. Other than that though I quite like the album; would I listen to it in my own time? No, but I wouldn't be upset if someone put it on - in fact I would be decently content.
I listened to it whilst doing revision so it didn’t have my full attention meaning that I may think slightly worse or better of it when I re-listen to it however for now I thought it was really good. A nice rock album with clearly some blues influence. The guitar was really nice and the singing was good Overall a 3 stars A very strong 6 out of 10
It was decent but not something I'd listen to again, 3.5/5
3.5
i liked land ho and waiting for the sun
Good solid album,
Gostei.
The folky country stuff was pretty meh but the rest was fun
Some excellent tracks. Some not great. Overall worth a listen if you like the Bluesier Doors.
Great moments trapped inside a band that cannot stop sabotaging itself with mysticism and keyboards.
love the doors and will always love the doors
i liked it! i’m tired and i don’t have much else to say right now. i feel like they have a distinct sound
Straight Blues Rock Album. No "Hits" on it, but it has a nice flow. Fav: Waiting for the sun
Not the type of music I willingly listen to. My father does though, so I do know some of the songs from the album. It was alright, but I probably wouldn't listen to it again.
2026.01.04.
So far I’m enjoying this way less than I thought I would — tracks one and two seem super boring and repetitive to me. And most of the rest with a couple that are ok only because they sound so sixties I enjoyed the vibe. Eg. Queen of the Highway. Also why did the band agree to name an album after one of their members…I don’t think anyone thinks that McCartney Lodge would be a great album name. I also listened to it on shuffle by accident which really can’t have helped it’s cause.
no
This album has two terrific songs, "Roadhouse Blues" and the sometimes-overlooked gem "Peace Frog", both of which are tough, punchy and innovative rock 'n' roll tracks. The rest of *Morrison Hotel* doesn't follow that same blueprint though - a lot of the other songs are pop rock numbers (of varying quality) that border on the psychedelic, such as the moody "Blue Sunday", the peppy "Ship Of Fools" and the bizarre "Land Ho!", along with a few fairly unimaginative excursions into the blues ("You Make Me Real", "Maggie M'Gill"). Despite the uneven material, the band plays solidly on this record, especially guitarist Robby Krieger, whose playing on "Peace Frog" is electrifying.
Over the years, I've come to the realization that The Doors are wildly overrated and Jim Morrison was a try-hard.
Some of the tracks here are fantastic (Roadhouse Blues, Peace Frog) and showcase the band’s blues bona fides & creativity. Other tracks just indulge Morrison’s formidable ego and are boring. Still, it’s better than I’d expect from this (overrated) band. A 3.
It has that classic 70s rockish vibe. The harmonica and the way the guitar sounds. Very similar to the last album. I like it, it's groovy. I really like the vibe but I don't have much else to say about it it's just a chill album. Favourite: Waiting for the Sun Least favourite: You Make Me Real
This record is all about "Peace Frog" for me, since it's one of only a handful of Doors songs that I still really like. So that was fun to hear again: "bloody red sun of fantastic LA"! I used to go to LA a lot for work, and I'd think of that song. But sure, it's also good to hear "Roadhouse Blues" and "Waiting for the Sun" from time to time, and even the songs that don't grab me as much are redeemed by the guitar and keyboards. So: while I was much more inclined to listen to the Doors when I was 18 years old, today I ended up enjoying "Morrison Hotel" as a whole more than I thought I was going to. 3/5 though because for me it's mainly just about that one song
Most people of a certain pedigree go through a Doors phase in their youth - I certainly had mine. They had mystique, sex appeal, danger, and the odd banging tune. Plus, there's only a few people of that pedigree in any given age group so you get to have or consolidate that outsider vibe you've so keenly cultivated for yo'self. But the problem with The Doors is that you very quickly grow out of them when the crack in their mystique shows. The cheesy keyboards which sound like you're walking around a carnival in which you're almost certainly going to be mugged in and where every ride is stuck together by chewing gum, the naive love songs, the copy paste rhythms. Morrison Hotel is my least listened to Doors album, mainly because it lacks the hits and it lacks the weirdness which set them apart. I like my Doors to be rough, mysterious, a little 'off'. People Are Strange, The End, Love Street, Break It Through. I like them less when they are straight Blues or when the Keyboards sound like Honky Tonk Hicksville. That's the vibe of this album. Not to say it ain't catchy and there ain't bangers. But they're bangers of a lesser degree. Even the songs with a touch of strangeness... They hit the spot that you want when you're a young Doors fan, but again they feel like lesser retreads.
Sounds like every Doors song I’ve ever heard.
i think this remjnds me alot of the velvet underground and i loveee the vibes i think its probs from the same time period as velv undg
163/1089 Having not loved LA Woman, the first few tracks had me concerned that this would be the same, however the track run from Ship of Fools to Indian Summer was pretty enjoyable and a welcome change 61/100
I think I could really grow to love this album, but it did feel like certain songs were blending together. The only songs that really stuck out to me that I’d listen to again were “Roadhouse Blues” and “The Spy”. Still an enjoyable album, I just prefer other albums of theirs.
Who are you? I’m Jim Morrison. And who is he? A weird naked Indian. Not a huge Doors guy, but it was worth the listen. Roadhouse Blues is good, but I prefer the Ministry cover. 3.5⭐️
okay this sound is interesting😭 -okay so far roadhouse blues is making me think i won’t like this it’s too 50s/60s still -waiting for the sun has some cool instrumental moments -you make me feel real no thanks -blue sunday is fine maybe my fav so far -ship of fools is fine -okay i like the spy actually and its lowkey giving vecna especially in terms of will -okay indian summer is really good and making me byler emo like im depressed now
Buen álbum, te transporta
Blues and r&b Roadhouse blues Waiting for the sun Peace frog Land ho
sure
Was surprised that I quite enjoyed this. Still not a Doors fan tho.
The only way I can describe this album is a few great moments/songs hidden inside a mostly uninspired album. I like the sound of this album (the keyboard, mainly), but it just feels like half of the songs are stuck in the same blues formula. But hey, maybe I just don't like blues. The lyrics are meh but I don't really mind. Notable favorites: Waiting for the Sun, Blue Sunday, Queen of the Highway, Indian Summer. Not a bad album, but I'm sure they have better ones.
Afternoon listening session, and a pretty cool one. The Doors were responsible for a seismic push of underground American blues and rock n roll into the mainstream, and 1970’s Morrison Hotel showcases a lot of it. Beyond the first few, heavily blues driven tracks, this project unveils a surprising variety of influences and performances which I really enjoyed. The highly popular ‘Roadhouse Blues’ is exactly as advertised; big swinging bassline and confident, textured vocals from lead man Jim Morrison, but my appreciation of this album lies in the integration of funk, soul and acoustic influences across the tracklist. ‘Peace Frog’ is probably my favourite song, a funk driven track with a distorted, percussive guitar fill, cool synth line and fun delivery from Morrison despite a noticeably dark subject matter built on the metaphor of a rising flood of blood across America - seemingly an acknowledgment of growing prejudice and suffering. ‘Blue Sunday’ follows as a pretty love ballad, forming the most unique 2 track run of the album that honestly surprised me. ‘Indian Summer’ is in a world of its own here, a more atmospheric, alternative take on the romantic ballad archetype with more reverbed guitars and a riff that feel quasi-south Asian, layered beneath a softer, spacier vocal delivery from Morrison. I like this album, and it’s a fun length for the experimentation it offers, but the classic blues sound still isn’t something I’m drawn to listen to casually.
Listenable.
twas nice but not really my preferred genre of music so i’ll most likely not tune in again
Fun energetic blues rock. A bunch of cool riffs, and the atmosphere was pretty good. I thought the first half was a bit better, but there isn’t really a song I disliked here. Nothing out of the ordinary but still a pretty well made and enjoyable album. 7/10
Not my fave, but it’s got my favorite Doors song ‘Peace Frog’ so…
Peace Frog was the most played song on my iPod in middle school for good reason. The blues shines through but there are moments (as with several Doors records) that bored me here. Overall, its a stereoscopic adventure and the Doors are clearly having fun and in lock step with each other.
It’s nice
I liked some of the guitar and bass intricacies, but ultimately it didn't hold my attention very well and didn't leave a lasting impression to the point where I barely remember any of it Standouts Ship of Fools 3/5
Good vibes! Liked it
Listenable, good vibes. Gives me the feeling of being in a bar l/restaurant midday somewhere in cowboy country.
More of a bluesy sound, listened to a background rock music.
Love The Doors. Liked this album but it’s nowhere near my favorite Doors album. It has a couple of classics but it’s not as exciting & different as some of their others.
Good
something I would have absolutely loved at the start of 2025, maybe I just listened to it at the wrong time but it didn't work for me :/ unfortunately Blue Sunday is the only one i can see myself returning to
Compared to the other two Doors albums on here, Morrison Hotel sits in a weird place. I don't think this has anything *close* to the highs on the other two albums: I don't think there's a "Break On Through" here, or a "Light My Fire", or a "Riders On The Storm", Or a "The End" for that matter. But the quality floor is almost as high as the quality ceiling is relatively low. I don't know if there's anything truly amazing here, but everything *is* at least good. It doesn't feel like The Doors were really exploring outside of the blues rock, dark psych and subtle mysticism of their work before this. But they *did* manage to put out an album of 9 consecutive, enjoyable songs. This approach, coupled with the shorter run-time makes this thing feel pretty breezy and results in an album that is a pleasant, if not especially interesting listening experience. It should go without saying that I'm giving this a 3. Would Morrison Hotel be thought of much at all today if not a Doors album? I think so, but moreso in the way we remember Moby Grape than The Doors. As a well-hidden little gem as opposed to a truly important piece of art.
Not bad.
I honestly liked this more than I thought I would. Still some of that Doors boringness sprinkled in though.
5/10
Cool blues
The Doors are kinda weird for me, they have the potential to be a hit for me, but it just doesn't do much for me. I think the only Doors song I really feel is People are Strange. I really enjoyed the vibe of Indian Summer tho
this would've been so tuff if i was 50 years older
Famous Dave's type music (non-derogatory). Favorite: Spy Least: Land Ho
Decent album, enjoyable songs. Great voice and guitar. Nice listen.
Favourite songs: Peace Frog Land Ho!
Bluesy. Not too bad but not really my style.
Great Songs: Peace Frog / Blue Sunday Good Songs: Roadhouse Blues, Waiting For The Sun, Ship of Fools, The Spy, Indian Summer Mid Songs: You Make Me Real, Land Ho!, Queen Of The Highway, Maggie M'Gill Bad Songs:
Not really what I usually go for but I did enjoy
Roadhouse Blues is badass. Morrison Hotel is pretty solid as a whole. The Doors can get a little “drugged out jam band-y” for my tastes, but this record feels a little tighter and focused. It’s pretty enjoyable. 3.7/5
I rarely LOVE a doors record and this is no different. It’s solid rock music. But not totally for me.
Excellent stuff
It’s good, but I don’t think it’s as good as other albums from the era.
Very easy listening and nice instruments. 3/5
Two weeks into the 1001 Albums challenge and already the second Doors record — fitting, since I actually mentioned this album in my notes on L.A. Woman. Morrison Hotel contains my second-favorite Doors song: the wonderfully funky “Peace Frog.” “Roadhouse Blues” is a great opener. In my older age I’ve come to prefer the later, blues-rock era of The Doors over their more psychedelic early years. “Waiting for the Sun,” “You Make Me Real,” “Maggie M’Gill” — all nicely heavy, rough-edged tracks. The Doors will never be at the center of my musical taste, but the next time I’m in the mood for them, Morrison Hotel is definitely the one I’ll return to.
I have it.
Another classic, but the doors are not my favorite
Good solid album 6/10
The good ol' days
Only a couple good tracks here imo. Largely boring.
Similar to the other album from The Doors that I got a couple of days ago. It’s an interesting / groovy sound, but not something that I would normally listen to
Besonders hervorstechend sind „Roadhouse Blues“, „Peace Frog“, „You Make Me Real“ und „The Spy“. Die Stücke wirken direkter und kompakter als auf früheren Alben, wodurch das Album eine geschlossene Dynamik erhält. Morrison Hotel zeigt eine Band, die ihre Wurzeln ernst nimmt, energisch und fokussiert spielt und damit ein solides, erdiges Werk in ihrer Diskografie vorlegt.
Good
Roadhouse is a classic Queen of the Highway is a great find Waiting for the Sun is good Peace Frog is fun Overall 6.5-7/10. Decent sound, classic organ from The Doors. Not too many stand-outs. Enjoyed
I don't really get it. The Doors self-titled is amazing, the other albums I've heard are mediocre imitations. Don't need them on the list. 3/5
Solid, but just too slow in the middle without mind-altering drugs to carry it...
Good
first few tracks were solid, but this really drags in the back 1/2
It was ok, when people say they don’t get the point behind the Beatles I scoff and go how can you think that, but I kinda feel that way about the doors, I don’t get the significance behind them
First time listening to The Doors.
Peace Frog slaps. The rest is certainly fine. As a very infrequent Doors listener I think I’d rather return to LA Woman more than this one. 3/5
Morrison hotel Roadhouse blues - so good 🥈 Waiting for the sun - also so good, heavy for 1970🥉 You make me real - so good Peace frog - 🥇stupidly groovy and your head doesn’t stop bopping along Blue Sunday - first one I don’t really vibe with Ship of fools - cool but again not super hot on it Land ho - fine The spy - fine Queen of the highway - meh Indian summer - don’t really like this one Maggie M’gill - fine outro Overall - I liked this and it annoyed me but the second half of the album really falls off, I see why people love the doors though. 3/5
Definitely the least psychedelic doors album we've had, disappointingly run of the mill by their high standards. Every so often there'd be the spark of something interesting and trippy but by and large just a nice enough collection of rock and roll blues songs. Still has Jim Morrison's great voice and general presence which suits make it stand out from the average but I expected more.
Been a long time since we last heard some Doors. Decent enough, sounds like them, but nowhere near as cool as their follow-up, LA Woman. Maybe they were perfecting their sound at this point. Waiting for the Sun, Blue Sunday, and The Spy were the standouts on a relatively run-of-the-mill album, all told.
Peace Frog is peak song. Waiting For The Sun is also great.
Chill vibes.
3.4/honestly not as bad as i expected it to be
I’ve always felt this to be overrated.
I love Roadhouse Blues just because it’s a great driving song and I love to drive. Otherwise this albums was kind of blah. I don’t really get the hype about the Doors generally to be honest.
Morrison Hotel is a really strong album from The Doors — a perfect blend of blues and psychedelic rock. It feels like a return to their roots after a few more experimental releases, and the result is a tight, confident record that flows beautifully from start to finish. While it doesn’t feature some of the band’s biggest hits, the overall sound and atmosphere more than make up for it. I’ve always loved Jim Morrison’s voice (even if not everyone does!), and this album really showcases his depth and charisma. Favourite track: Roadhouse Blues and Ship of Fools are both fantastic. Least favourite track: Every song here earns its place. Album artwork: An iconic cover that perfectly captures the spirit of the band.
A bit meh, considering
Great sound. Love Morrison’s voice, Manzarek’s organ, Krueger’s guitar. For me, the downfall is songwriting. The breaks sound clunky and contrived. Just give me a hooky chorus.
brought back a lot of memories!
Yeah it’s the doors alright
This Doors album seems to have slipped under the radar for me, don't think I've listened all the way through. This is the Doors at their familiar blues rock sound. Nothing really "pops" per se ("Peace Frog" is probably the biggest hit of the bunch here for my money), but it's a fairly consistent and compact album. I found that the first side had a bit more highlights, though.
short, inoffensive blues rock. not quite the direction i expected the band to take after the first two albums
very forgettable sounding to me, but an easy listen while it lasted
Started off absolutely hating it but then the second half actually got super interesting, the blues rock stuff sucks hard for me but then it randomly becomes kinda abstract art rock and i quite enjoy it Fav song: Blue Sunday or Indian Summer
Easy listening but expected more.
I liked this Doors album much more than I thought I would. It was a nice departure from the hits. Compared to Van Morrison and some of the contemporaries, The Doors do the blues rock thing in a way that seems more authentic. Not sure how to quantify that.
I'm so used to the hits that it's almost hard to believe they had any other songs. So from that sense, it was kind of refreshing and not as painful as I was expecting to hear something different. But there's no chance in hell I'll revisit this. Our collective cultural experience with that godforsaken movie and the overplaying that followed completely burned me out on this band. There's no need to consider what it must have been like to live Jim Morrison's life back in the day because that has already been covered extensively.
The Doors aren't that great. There. I said it. This record is just mediocre 60's blues rock, and I'd say it's more blues than rock. I tried to give it a second listen in earnest, but when the second track started, I just couldn't.
Fun. Dont think it’s their best, in fact their record a year later is so much more of a banger.
Like. Good but not for me.
Less memorable than the first one.
I know they have better. This is short, but just ok.
Solid, some more Doors. This album kicks off the pair of more blues-driven albums that finished off their run before Morrison died. Not that there hadn't been blue before, but the focus kicked up a notch here on the side of the blues scale. Anyway, onto songs specifically. Roadhouse Blues, Waiting for the Sun--both timeless classics. For me the latter is the best on the album. By track three, you start to see the more boring side of the new blues focus. You Make Me Real is kind of a part blues, part rock a billy track heavy on a cheesy piano jingle. It's not bad, just kind of average and forgettable. Track 4, Peace Frog, might arguably be the best album on the track, though I lean a little more to Waiting for the Sun. The boringness of You Make Me Real would be forgiven at this point if only they stayed on the righteous path... Alas, we have a three-track sequences of terrible schlock. Blue Sunday isn't that bad but Ship of Fools is a foul song and Land Ho! is pestilent. Blue Sunday is kind of just a soft, whiny track that doesn't manage the kind of dreaminess that other similar ones like Crystal Ship executed with great success. It's not terrible, just a boring skip. Not even worth speaking about Ship of Fools and Land Ho!--it would be better if we just pretended those never exist. If only we could put these two tracks on Soft Parade and fire that album forever into space, then the Doors discography would be a solid piece of work, and this album would be redeemed. But still not among their best. The nex three tracks are good but not enough to recover from the depths of Land Ho!--The Spy is quite good and Queen of the Highway pretty good as well. I really like Indian Summer, which does manage to recover that dark dreamy feel of Crystal Ship. Maggie McGill is just a decent blues song. So overall, I'd say this is the second worst of all the Doors' studio albums before Morrison died. It's definitely a partial recovery from The Soft Parade, but not quite as good as Waiting for the Sun, and not as complete a recovery as L.A. Woman. As mentioned before, this is my Doors discography rating so far: The Doors: 5/5 Strange Days 5/5 Waiting for the Sun 4/5 Soft Parade 2/5 Morrison Hotel 3/5 LA Woman 4/5
Honestly expected better from the doors
Not their best album. Some belters on there but interspersed with quite a bit of filler.
A more back to basics Doors album that mixes blues, jazz and psychedelia. Roadhouse Blues must be one of the most covered tracks and while this is a Doors record I haven't heard much it was worth the listen 55 years later.
I really liked The Spy and Queen of the Highway, the rest was just average sadly
nice
Sometimes the Doors are so bad they’re good, and sometimes they’re so bad they’re good. Each song is like another trigger pull in a game of Russian Roulette. Either you get the country bar vibes of ¨Roadhouse Blues¨ or a slog like ¨Waiting for the Sun.¨ That being said, the less you hear of Ray Manzenarek’s keyboards, the better. He chose a piano for this one, and I’d say that’s the right choice. The music isn’t bad, but it would sound a lot more genuine coming from an old black man instead of the son of an admiral. You get the same with the mega-rich Mumford and Sons playing dress up and making old black music. Then again, isn’t that what white musicians have been doing since the beginning of popular music- making watered down versions of black music? Sometimes it’s great, sometimes it’s Pat Boone. Sometimes it’s ¨Morrison Hotel.¨ Best songs: ¨Roadhouse Blues,¨ ¨Land Ho!¨
Another doors album. Another round of me trying to convince myself that I like them.
Not sure why this was on the list. It’s not in the top 3 Doors albums
First half was really good and second half was disappointing, expected to like this more than I did, still solid though
Overrated
Good tunes, the doors have a distinct sound with the organ and vocals. 3.5
Meh
3.5/5
Riffs are ok but Jim Morrison annoys me exponentially. The lyrics and his voice are grating.
Generally I struggle to separate The Doors from the cult of Jim Morrison, but this was fairly decent. Quite bluesy whereas I was expecting some laid back psych-rock. That said, I doubt I'll ever listen to it again.
Shades on, arm hanging out of the window, everyone on the M18 wants to shag me. Good driving music, enjoyed this album. First track and peace frog very good.
it was ok
Started off well, bit too much of that organ or whatever for my liking.
Some good solid rock and roll. No complaints, but no real highlights either. Decent album. Best song: Ship of Fools
I guess I’m also not much of a Doors guy. This was fine. But nothing I’d be eager to return to. 3/5
Not a huge fan of The Doors and don’t get why they are so revered. This was more hard rock orientated than others I’ve heard. Some decent tracks but overall kinda blurred into one.
Fajny ale trochę za stary
Didn't really catch my attention much, felt quite dated to me in most cases. Not particularly bad in any way, just unimpressive
Olispa 1-10 arvosteluasteikko.
Aika harmitonta jammailua, pari ihan menevää rallia.
Not the best Doors album
