Reviews (page 6 of 13)
Well, I woke up this morning and I got myself a beer
Wow, some fabulous tracks ... and those lyrics
Another good Doors album here. Not as great as their earlier albums, but still has some bangers. This one makes me feel like I'm driving on the open road out West, making stops at random dive bars to get drunk and party with the locals. It just has that vibe to me. Peace Frog is my favorite on here.
Very good álbum bit Kinda repetitive. Best song: Waiting for the Sun
Way bluesier than I thought. Not my favorite Door but pretty pretty good.
It's been so long since I’ve listened to a Doors album, and boy, I forgot just how enjoyable they are. This one is definitely another I'll go back to and jam out to again.
Morrison
That's some smooth keys and guitar work. I don't want to call them a one trick pony because they are so damn talented - but it does feel like they have a pretty narrow range on this album. I'm impressed with this album but I'm not really blown away by it.
Roadhouse Blues sounds familiar. The rest was new to me. I enjoyed it! My favourites are Peace Frog, Blue Sunday, Queen of the Highway and Indian Summer.
Bless the 70s rock'n'blues
All the best hits from The Doors but slightly different
I liked this one, it's a different vibe from what I recall of other Doors albums. It's more bluesy rock, simple and straightforward. I would like to have heard more in this vein.
Typically I am not a huge Doors fan, but I enjoyed this one. The blues, keyboard, and lyrics were really good.
This may be a hot take but I liked this one a lot more than L.A. Woman. I very much liked the variety, from upbeat twangy electric guitar to slower more plodding songs with a nice splash of blues all across. I liked the organ that was interspersed throughout. The storytelling was nice too, it wasn’t all coked out nonsense that only makes sense if you’re high as a kite. Pretty good album I would listen to this one again.
Pleasantly surprised by this. Enjoyed the more bluesy sound & editing they gave in tracks.
Surprisingly enjoyable, did not expect this. Bluesy guitar tunes
Great stuff. I haven't really explored The Doors beyond their hits (and the other album on this list) but I really should. They were able to bring the goods. 4.5/5
Exemplary Doors album. So many memorable tracks, with varying styles. Favourites include Roadhouse Blues, Ship of Fools and Land Ho. 4/5
Back to back with their debut album is a weird coincidence. Not as strong as some but still a classic.
Have always loved The Doors and their unique carnival-like sound combined with Morrison’s vocals.
What a weird guy Jim Morrison was. We share a birthday.
An excellent mix of blues infused rock. Maybe not their best album, but still pretty solid.
Peacefrog and Roadhouse Blues still holdin up after 50+ years, but I believe it’s Ship Of Fools that gets this album on the 1001 list. Short and sweet listen, great bluesy sound with a lot of range. I remember 1970 but never remember a time when hotel rooms rented from $2.50 per night. Solid (3.9*s)
I can talk forever about The Doors. Primarily about how overlooked and underappreciated they are as one of the best American bands ever. While I continue to enjoy them they don't get as much air play as they used to for me. My memory for Morrison Hotel is that it was one of their weaker albums. I was surprised how strong the album is on this re-listen. They fall back to more the blues roots and get away from some of the psychedelic Jim stuff. Manzarek's organ/piano paired with Kreiger's flamenco style and Jim's flair sprinkled in work really well this time around. Stronger album than I had expected though I look forward to hopefully LA Woman and The Doors. The one thing it missed is a signature long jam ballad that they are famous for. I understand that isn't everyone's cup of tea but I've always love The Soft Parade, The End, When the Music's Over, etc. I would have loved if they dropped 1 or 2 songs and had another long track to cap the album. Despite that still high marks deserved. 3.61 stars
Bluesy Doors = Best Doors And this is their bluesiest. Best tracks (in order of personal preference): Peace Frog - doesn't get as much airplay as their most famous classics, but it's as good as any of them. This is the Doors signature sound, at their best. Funky beat, driving keyboards, and shamanistic Morrison rapping vocals. Love that guitar solo too. Roadhouse Blues - awesome, high energy, blues rocker. And one of the best album openers anywhere. A classic. Maggie M'Gill - Powerful Morrison vocals, driving beat, and awesome blues guitar. Land Ho! - Love that bouncy bassline The Spy - How cool is that bluesy guitar riff? And Morrison sounds great here too. Waiting for the Sun and Indian Summer are more psychedelic tracks. Still good....just not bluesy and could fit better on other albums. (I believe I read somewhere that Indian Summer was written several years earlier, so that would make sense). I'm not big on Blue Sunday or Ship of Fools, thus the 4 rating overall for an otherwise 5-star album.
Whenever I seem to be talking to Doors fans, they seem to adore Morrison's psychedelia wank. But this blues-rock album I find much more palatable
Really liked this album I had never heard before. Good bluesy feel but still sounds like the doors
2024-06-23...
The Doors released six albums and one live album. They're all good. Morrison Hotel, and The Soft Parade, are the two weaker studio albums. I still love them (the two albums, and The Doors.)
HL: "Roadhouse Blues", "Waiting for the Sun", "Peace Frog/Blue Sunday", “Land Ho!” A stellar 1st half, with some of their best psychedelic tunes & blues numbers. 2nd half is good; listening to both this and L.A. Woman reminds me that I prefer their earlier stuff ("hello i love u") to later-day Morrison. Still rounds up to a 4
A more bluesy than psychy and fewer famous tracks. I loved this
This was a more bluesy version of the band that I really dug, I liked the album
Classic The Doors album, "Waiting for the Sun" mixes the psychedelic into the blues, especially with the Moog synth sound. Was fun to listen to.
Great album. Some songs were familiar of course but also some new stuff.
First listen through I thought this album was only okay. But I find myself going back to parts of it more.
own
everything I know about being a doors fan I learned from the kids in the hall
Good album, I probably enjoy this more blues-rock version of The Doors the best.
the spy and queen of the highway were top tier
I do love the doors and while this isn’t their finest I still really enjoyed it. Waiting for the sun was my fav
Definitely can see the impact this band had on so many after.
A lot of dark bluesy sounds on this album. The keyboards are as always strong. I don't love the Doors but a solid album.
I was trying to figure out why this album sounded like a grimy version of the Doors. It's way more guitar forward than what is considered classic doors. "Waiting for the Sun" has that classic Doors sound with all the organ from Ray. But the rest either has more guitar or has Ray trading the organ for a piano giving the Doors a more down to earth and bluesy vibe. Stand out tracks are "Roadhouse Blues", "Peace Frog", and "Waiting for the Sun".
Plenty of good music here. I just wish Morrison would let the band jam more; a few of the songs would have been better without the vocals.
Loved their Roadhouse Blues. Just love The Doors 4*
Rock, Blues, 1970 -> 4
I was hoping to like the deep cuts more than I did. The hormone the are legendary though. I was always fascinated by the doors. I made the mistake of watching the Oliver stone movie about them and it was so freaking annoying.
Grungy and scrappy
roadhouse blues. Absolutely cracking song. Great way to open the album. Some great piano in You make me real. Could imagine the bar in full swing with a guy playing the piano to this. Absolutely rocking. Peace frog. Love the bass line and boards on this one. Great solo. Absolute tune. Good first side/half to the album. Drops in the middle and finishes off well with Maggie M'Gill. Overall, a good album i say with a few standout tracks. Rating 4/5.
Good blues album, plenty of good songs.
Mint
There was a time when this would have been an unquestionable 5 stars from me, and that would have been the case if I didn't relisten to the album. Maybe it's age, maybe I should have been day drinking while listening to this? Either way, there's a lot to appreciate here, just doesn't feel 5 stars
this was a good solid rock and roll
Roadhouse blues was the first song I played with a band in front of people. This one's a rocker and a classic. Favorite track is Peace Frog.
Thought I hated The Doors before, but this was a nice blues rock album to listen to.
Another pleasant surprise. Much better than I was expecting.
Vintage American Rock
I was doing other stuff while listening to this, and yet, my ears kept tuning in and realizing I liked what I was hearing.
Not the best Doors album, but still pretty good. If it wasn't for the dip in the middle, this would be a 5 star album, but as it is, it's a strong 4 star one. Somehow, I still love Roadhouse Blues, even if it has been played to death for the last 50 years.
Waiting for the sun was my fave.
Muchas de las canciones suenan igual, por suerte son buenas todas.
Aside from Roadhouse Blues all these songs were new to me. Not a Doors fan but this one is very good.
A decent chill listen, mostly rating it 4 stars because it does a better job than the previous picks
Enjoyable rock, lots of fun riffs that keep you interested
Not my favorite doors record but still great. Has peace frog on it.
Not a weak track. I hadn't previously listened to more than Roadhouse. More classic rock (more guitar-focussed?), less artsy than their debut, but still The Doors (organs, growling Morrison vocals, oddball themes). Could reach 5* on many repeated listens as familiarity grows. Big fan of 'Land Ho'.
Gud gud like to go to the hotel 🧤
Classic up beat rock
classic. doors are GOATED psychedelic rock
Thanks for all the bangers Jim! Good album not quite 5 stars
Jim is so drunk!
Back when I listened to classic rock pretty exclusively this wouldn’t be the Doors album I’d reach for but I really enjoyed it this time around. The blues influences really shine through and Morrison sounds great with the little grit in his voice (3.5/5)
This album starts out with a bang with Roadhouse Blues, and though I don't think it quite rises to those same heights again, it stays solid all the way through. Has some nice variation between tracks, and makes for a really good listen.
There is no mistaking that The Doors were instrumental to the mainstream popularity of American Rock, and this can be seen evidently on Morrison Hotel. Sonically similar throughout, the signature Doors sound is only altered in terms of tempo, and this is all as well, as over thirty-seven minutes, Jim and the gang muster up a storm of timeless rock.
Good, but I like the first Album more…
Very enjoyable
Not their best work, but it showed how early rock bands could incorporate honky tonk into their arrangements and make it last forever.
There is an evil magic to the Doors music, completely askew to the hippie and flower power of the 60s, harbingers of metal and punk rock. They are equally accessible and inaccessible. Jim Morrison’s gruff voice is as eerie as it is often monotone. This album is probably their most consistent, from the roll licking Roadhouse Blues, to the political anger of Peace Frog, and the dark romanticism of The Spy and Queen of the Highway. It doesn’t have any “hits” per se, but it is strong throughout, a borderline classic.
Great blend of blues and psychedelic rock. I mostly knew The Doors with a best-of I owned as a teenager, and I don't know so well their full records. It was pretty pleasant to listen to. The characteristic sound of the organ feels less present than in other of The Doors tracks I had in mind and it therefore sounds a bit less dated than other of their releases.
I actually quite liked this
A record that starts strong! Roadhouse Blues is a 10/5 song
I'll grant that this is one of the great albums by The Doors, and I appreciate the failed effort they put into not having Elektra photograph them as Jim's backup band. Still, I'm not nearly as impressed as I was in my 20s. That's not their fault.
A new, but expected, title for me. One of the first full albums I ever listened to was their self-titled release. As for this one, I'd heard its hits on the radio plenty of times, to the point where every time those first few notes in "Roadhouse Blues" come on, I tend to change the station. But after giving the entire album a listen, it's not so bad. The new-to-me tracks were fun, although the lyrics could get a bit strange sometimes. "Waiting For the Sun" is always a fun one. "The Spy" is an interesting one. All in all, not bad.
The first half of this is a barn burner. Morrison is completely unleashed and is beautiful and frightening at the same time. Everyone sounds passionate. His vocal assault on side one is similar to Elvis Costello on Trust, that crazy naked emotion that is hard to pull off on a studio recording…. Then we have side two it feels deflated.
Much better than I remember
My first time hearing this beginning to end. Good Doors album.
Another reason for playing the Doors daily.
Roadhouse Blues - Just the right amount of raucous blues and dark, brooding Jim Morrison. A strong start which doesn’t blow your mind, but sets the tone admirably. Waiting for the Sun - Tip top Doors psychedelic rock, weird Dorian flavoured chord progression in the chorus which is just jarring enough to catch the attention You Make Me Real - Continuing a good run of tracks, there’s enough standard blues rock fare here, tinged with dark psychedelic influence, that it rocks you along. Not a standout but a decent track. Peace Frog - Come on, it’s a classic for a reason. Great song by any standards, what a banger. Blue Sunday - The segue from Peace Frog into this dreamy piece of psych pop is brilliant. Ray’s organ sits in the background adding mood and texture throughout as this song glides along. The syncopated rhythm of the chorus is a great hook. Ship of Fools - Here comes the jazz… or perhaps not. Great jazzy drum groove in the intro morphs into a throughly… ok… verse, which is reprised at the end. This song is saved by a great, moody jam section and a solid bass groove. Land Ho! - The wheels have fallen off here. It’s not bad, but when you know what the band is capable this sort of middling major blues rock is just a bit pedestrian. Again redeemed slightly by a good middle jam section. The Spy - Sexy, slow blues, Doors style. This is more like it. Nothing groundbreaking from a songwriting perspective but it’s got that moody timbre which makes The Doors great. Queen of the Highway - The Rhodes on the intro starts strong, and develops into a great groove. A nice bed for Jim Morrison to come to the fore with some characteristic crooning, plenty of space in the track and the mix for the lyrics to shine. Not sold on the middle 8. Indian Summer - Standout track on the album for me, although it lends very heavily from their earlier work, particularly “The End”. However, this fresh twist on the idea remains great in its own right, exactly the type of evocative, slowly twisting, modal psych jamming which allows the band to settle in and paint a collage of sound for the listener to melt into. Fantastic stuff. Maggie M’Gill - I imagine this would be a bit of a barnstormer played live. On record it remains fairly energetic, but again falls into the more generic type of blues rock so typical of a lot of 60s bands on autopilot. Not a bad closer to a pretty solid album.
Roadhouse Blues: 9/10 Wait for the Sun: 8/10 You Make me Real: 7/10 Peace Frog: 10/10 Blue Sunday: 6/10 Ship of Fools: 8/10 Land Ho!: 7/10 The Spy: 7/10 Queen of the Highway: 5/10 Indian Summer: 6/10 Maggie M'Gill: 7/10 Album Score: 7.9/10 very very high 4 star
Simply the Doors, simply good!
I had a Doors Greatest Hits album once, but most of this was new to me. It grew on me after a few listens. The Doors have a pretty unique sound, and Jim Morrison sings with a lot of soul. I get psychedelic undertones sprinkled into this mostly bluesy rock collection. Enjoyed it a lot!
lieb the doors, erste song schomol bluesrock time. findi nöd sooo geil aber de morrison singt suuuper. waiting for the sun isch huuuere geil. de synthi? und die fuzzy gitarre zwüschedine und denn die chli nostalgisch strophe bwuaah you make me real isch afoch bereal 1970. aber wieder mega bluesrock. s dünne piano gfallt mer mega. peace frog het ENDLICH d doors orgle. enflich. wichtig und wuchtig. blue sunday isch süss aber jo nöd bsunders geil. ship of fools foht miteme komische takt ah und denn ischs mega classic doors eig no nice. land ho findi ehner weniger spannend. the spy isch wieder ehner da woni mer vorstell. sochli weirde storytelling shit come ooonn. i am your deepest secret feat jooo geile sxheiss. queen of the highway isch okay. nöd meh. indian summer isch huuere schön whuaaa sehr geil. so spacey und de jimmy sing suuuper. de song lupfts gad en stern. maggie m'gill isch wieder voll bluesrock time. s ganze album wechslet brav ab zwüsched bluesrock und experimentellerem langsamerem. ich find die langsame vieeeel geiler. aber anschinend isch s album vor dem gar nöd guet acho und drum hends uf dem wieder ihren classic bluesrock gmacht und denn hend sich d fans beruhigt. vo dem her checkis. git e guets vieri find doors afoch e sehr underrated band sehr sehr geil.
Classics - didn't know a lot of them had names, but recognized and enjoyed
When The Doors are good they are so good. Jim isn't a drunk mess on this album which is great because he is captivating when he's sober enough. I think this album starts strong a peters out by the end. I'm surprised to see so many people Maggie M'Gill a highlight. I found it so dull especially coupled with Indian Summer. The Spy right before both of those clunkers was a way more interesting track. Good music by a good band, but has its warts.
Love the doors
I do like The Doors and I'd rate their debut album very highly. This album isn't as good as that, being very much more of the same, and something of a return to the style after The Soft Parade.
The Doors is another band I got surprisingly early on. And I’m glad that was the case, because their debut was a fantastic record, no doubt. But it also set the bar very high, and I have yet to find a psych rock album from that time period that really comes close. I kind of forgot this band was on the list to be completely honest, so I was ready to hear more from them. I’m not sure what it was with bands in the 60s and 70s releasing a bunch of great records in a very short span of time. I guess all bands did back then was tour and record. But this only came a little over three years after their debut. It sees the band returning to form a little bit more than previous albums. And it works. The blues have not gone away, and now they have some small additions of jazz added in here and there. It might not have the jamminess of something like Light My Fire, or the experimentation of The End, but it still rocks just as much as anything else they’ve made. And every member is still playing at an incredibly high level. Especially Manzarek. I continue to be awed by his organ and keyboard skills. Jim is also just as powerful as ever. His voice is smooth like butter, but thick like gravy. And the raspy heaviness of it fits this more slightly more rock-oriented sound perfectly. I almost like this just as much as their first album. But I think that debut has the edge only slightly because of how solid of a breakthrough album that was. I’ve been on a very strong run of good albums recently. Not mind blowing. But just good, and I’m enjoying them enough where it isn’t leaving me always looking for more. Rating: 7/10
Not quite as good as their debut but still excellent.
it got better towards the end groovy has to listen to riders on the storm afterwards haha
lots of fun! favourite song: peace frog
🔥
#156. I thought I only knew a few Doors songs, but it turns out I already knew most of the songs on this album. I definitely dig it, this album is good shit. 4/5: I like
I love the doors, influenced a lot of my favourite bands. However I had never listened to this album. It was okay it wasn’t my favourite just felt like it failed to reach as many heights as the first 2 albums. Doesn’t mean I still don’t love it, I hate rating everything a 4 but I just can’t rate it lower. Standout Songs: Roadhouse Blues You Make Me Real Maggie M’Gill
Psychedelic Blues is apparently the way to my heart, "Roadhouse Blues" goes without saying, but the rest of this album was just a straight up groove on my frequency. Very little of the greatest hits appear here, but in some ways it was The Doors at their tightest.
Again, this is a new band that I never gave the time of day. I love the blues elements and vocals.
Good album. I especially like the first and last song
Great Album
Also good
Great album
It’s been SOOO long since I’ve listened to a Doors album, and boy I forgot just how enjoyable they are. This one is definitely another one I’ll go back to and jam out again.
Good
Not necessarily a comeback album, but this is one of the better Doors albums. Does it need to be heard? I think so. I find it interesting the song "Waiting on the Sun" is not on the album "Waiting on the Sun," but is on this album.
Much more straight forward rock than I expected. Drifts back to more Doors style in the second half.
I thought I knew their discography. Pleasant surprise.
En ollut ennen kuullut. Tutun kuuloisia juttuja. Lisäsi ymmärrystä bändistä, jee.
vielschichtig
Best one i’ve listened to so far! This has crack in it! ‘Waiting for the Sun’ was my favorite track on the album! As well as ‘Blue Sunday’ & ‘Queen of the Highway’
Might be their album, Peace Frogs 😤😤😤😤😤
They were very talented musicians. Too bad drugs were an influence on them.
Highlights: Roadhouse Blues, Blue Sunday, The Spy, Indian Summer 4,5/5
Very good album, Bluesy and Beatles esque in the guitar and drum grooves
Great mix of songs with classic guitar riffs. Peace Frogs is my favorite track but Indian Summer was sickly and sentimental
My favourite Doors album when I was younger was "The Best of The Doors" so I fear we might be on similar Rolling Stones territory here, where I only really like the singles or hits. For some reason, I got into a habit a few years ago, of always putting on The Doors on whilst manning the barbeque and drinking several beers. I don't know why, but it works. I recommend it. Anyway, as a result of that, my other half has bought me a Doors album on vinyl every once in a while for birthdays, Christmas, etc. As a result I'm finding that the Doors album tracks, whilst obviously not as good as the hits, have a charm to them. UPDATE: Since this was the album over the weekend, I ended up going on a bit of a Doors "deep dive" and listened to all their studio albums recorded whilst Jim Morrison was alive. (I still have the two recorded without him as a three piece and An American Prayer to go.) My conclusions? Morrison Hotel isn't the best Doors album but it's not the worst either. (The worst, for me, is The Soft Parade. It came before Morrison Hotel and has strings and brass all over it, not in a Beatles-y way, but in a Las-Vegas-pop-cover-of-a-alternative-song way. Thus, Morrison Hotel is seen as a return to form.) I think that Best of The Doors album did get all the best songs on it (I think it was a 90 minute cassette actually!?) but I've found enough in the original records to make me want to get to know them better.
Right back at sixth form college….
Some good songs here. Very blues focused and stays from going too experimental. But it’s a solid album.
Solid Rockn roll
I know a guy who said The Doors are the greatest band of all time. He hinted at hating on The Beatles which is the only correct answer for the greatest band of all time. He told me “you can’t really think the Beatles are the greatest band of all time?” And I replied “no, I really think the Beatles are the greatest band of all time.” So yeah. Now that my intro that literally no one cares about is over time to review The Doors’ Morrison Hotel. The first half is the best, middle is eh. Indian Summer is bad. Ends with Maggie M’Gill which is a great song. Good instruments. Jim Morrison’s voice is my least favorite part of the band. The length of the album is Alfa. In my last paragraph to make myself seem important on a website I’ll end with a question for the readers “Do you really think The Doors are the great band of all time?”
Nice blues-rock. All very good, beautiful, but almost nothing memorable.
mixed bag roadhouse blues waiting for the sun peace frog
Morrison Hotel by The Doors presents a more accessible sound while still retaining the band's distinctive style. With its infectious groove and superb vocal performance by Jim Morrison, the album is captivating from start to finish. It demonstrates the band's evolution while staying true to their essence, making it a must-have for fans and newcomers alike. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 5 STAND OUT TRACK - Roadhouse Blues
I do really like this album, idk why i’m not giving it a 5, i would probably give it a 4.5 but… you cant do that sadly… but super 🕺✨
nice album
Pretty good album. Land Ho! was stand out for me but the whole album was an easy listen with some interesting songs. Really enjoyed it!
It's not as good as LA Woman obviously, but this one is also really great. Morrison's vocals are just so compelling, and the songwriting here is really great.
Very good. Loved the blues feel it had.
Pretty classic stuff. You can almost smell the room with its ‘relaxing scent’…
Heard less than favourable things about this before listening. Or had I? Perhaps it was just those "yeah, not a patch on the early stuff" comments, but Morrisson delivers again with with "that" voice and references to love, war, peace, lust, and hope. A friday well spent
The Doors are always a good listen.
I haven’t heard much of this album outside of “Roadhouse Blues,” but it’s quite good. “Blue Sunday” through “Indian Summer” are all great songs and make for a really fantastic middle/end of the album. Not my favorite from The Doors, but I still enjoyed this a lot overall.
Good one. Like 70s I've never lived in.
Good, not a Doors album I am super familiar with, the songs I didn't know past me buy a bit. But an enjoyable, if not short listen.
I've said it before, but here it is again: psychedelic and blues rock are not my forte areas by any means, but The Doors just get it sooo right for me; they define the blend of the two genres for me. I don't think this album has as many iconic tracks as some other Doors albums might have, but the flow of songs here just works and makes for a great overall entire album listen, regardless of "singles" potential. That said, "Waiting for the Sun" is one of my favorite Doors songs. I am not a Doors expert by any means, but I noticed that this album is touted as a "return to form". What I do know is that their best form was immediately present on their debut album, so I can agree that they sound as good here as they did on their debut album.
You know what they say; good things don't last forever. I'm not saying that because of any "good album streaks" ending or whatever, I said that because this album doesn't last forever. Morrison Hotel is pretty good. Let's start with the best thing about this album in my opinion. I really like Jim Morrison's singing. I just think it sounds nice and different from other singing styles. It's a real shame that he died as young as he did. The rest of this album's sound is also quite good. It's nothing crazy, but it is very solid. The writing and lyrics aren't bad. There's some variety on here and the album doesn't really have any notably bad songs on it. Overall, this is a pretty good album and I wouldn't be opposed to listening to more albums from The Doors later for this project. Light 4/5.
Good guitar heavy cruising dad music that made a shockingly compelling album
He started so shy that he could not face the audience, but here Morrison is screaming. The Lizard King shouts all his commands with bluesy tunes in the back (except for Indian Summer, a lovely song). The band was on point. I think this is one of their best works.
Defines the misterious sound of a classic band with no bassist, but it's not my favourite doors album
Rockin, bet dad likes
good classics
It’s The Doors doing Doors-y stuff.
The word swagger was invented to describe the music on this record. Jim Morrisons vocals is so extremely cool and self-assured. The Spy is a song I didn't know, that I really liked.
Very good
The Doors made some great songs in their day, but they've never seemed to be an album band in my eyes. Their eponymous debut, I may have expected to see, but this one surprised me. It has the hit single "Roadhouse Blues" and my personal favorite "Peace Frog", but beyond that, I didn't think this album held much. And I was mostly right. Some bluesy, near psychedelic tracks that go down easy, but don't hold that "hit" appeal. Still, this album shows one of the big American rock bands at the height of their power. They sound absolutely great together, as they unknowingly near the end of their time as a band. This was such an easy listen, that I'm bumping it up from 3 stars to 4. I couldn't do "Peace Frog" dirty like that.
Great band, but probably not their best album…
The best parts are awesome, the worst parts are OK. I don't like their bluesy side very much. The more mysterious sounding songs are better. And my favorite song: Peace Frog.
I usually don’t listen to this style of music often but this was a very enjoyable listen. I like the blues influence of the Doors and the grittiness in Morrison’s delivery. This album is one i’ll revisit again for sure.
Just a solid record of rock, blues and singer-songerwriter tunes. Jim morrison does have a commanding voice and the writing is quite captivating as well, with love songs, and a sea shanty sort of a thing as well?, there's blues cuts like roadhouse blues, and maggie. There's this creepy and dark song the spy. It's a fun, energetic heartful album. Ship of fools, and queen of highway are fine. It's a decent 4 for me.
Funa album, I think "Maggie McGill" is my favorite.
Love the doors sound
kinda a banger
This is a fun album. I really enjoy it. Instrumentation and vocals are obviously excellent. Experimentation is in good quantity and quality. Aside from “Roadhouse Blues”, however, there aren’t any stand-out tracks that make the project too memorable like there are on their debut album or the album after this one. A good amount of range though, emotionally, but most lack the energy to really excite. 4/5
I really liked this album! My favorite songs were blue sunday and waiting for the sun.
Rating: 9/10 Amazing album, great songwriting from start to finish. A lot of character and personality from all of the members, it made this album incredibly enjoyable to listen to the entire time. Really loved the interplay between the instruments, especially the bass and keyboards. Riffs were very blues-inspired but played with the band's signature style and swagger. Favorite songs: Roadhouse Blues, Waiting for the Sun, You Make Me Real, Peace Frog, Ship of Fools, Land Ho!, Queen of the Highway, Maggie M'Gill. Least favorite song: Blue Sunday.
I love the bluesy feel of this album
Great road trip album
Probably my 3rd favorite Doors album
Liked a lot
One of the best Doors albums. A joy from start to finish.
The Spy bestes Lied
Classic. Just like I was listening to it with my dad.
Probably my least favorite doors album, but it still gets a 4 :)
A great showcase of bluesy psych goodness, The Doors can do no wrong.
Die meisten Songs von den Doors sind gut.
Another classic album. Jim's voice on here at its best real rock n roll. Road house blues has an iconic vocal harp trade with some wicked piano.
Nice easy listening. Good vibes. Will listen to again. 4/5
Classy, slow and flowy.
I liked this one
4 Stars (11/15)
Went thru a big Doors phase when I was in college. And I'm still a fan of the lush, dark sound.
Really good. A rich stew
Ooo okay. I like. Blues on here is on point. Awesome! 4
The Doors are always awesome. 4/5
Surprisingly enjoyed this one. It's the organ.
Great memories. Always enjoy this sound!
Good.
Above average blues rock album. Enjoyable.
Nice sound, good vocals, interesting
Some of the tracks I could crank in the car and then some I thought got a little monotonous and maybe were not meant to listen sober. I love Morrison’s voice always.
Enjoyed!
great guitar, great vocals (both the clean on the whole album and the rougher vocals on maggie m'gill), great bass, decent melodica. all other instruments were excessively repeditive and unbalanced. the electric piano on ship of fools and land ho! becomes physically painful to listen to. despite this ship of fools ended up being one of my favourites. favourites: ship of fools and maggie m'gill
Land Ho! Lesser doors, but still these boys could play and were always interesting.
Maggie M'Gill is quality. Not the best Doors album but still a good listen.
not their best but killer first song
This could be their best album, but I go between which one of theirs is their best. Lots of bangers on this one, and the remaster from a few years ago sounds really good.
Not my favorite Doors rig but tracks 1, 2, 4 and 11 render this album a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Morrison Hotel by The Doors, released in 1970, is a blues-infused journey that reaffirms the band's musical prowess. Straying from their earlier psychedelic sound, the album embraces a raw, rock-and-roll energy. Jim Morrison's vocals are charismatic, and tracks like "Roadhouse Blues" and "Peace Frog" stand out for their infectious rhythm. The album's diversity, from blues to soulful ballads, showcases The Doors' versatility. While it might lack the conceptual depth of some previous works, Morrison Hotel captivates with its spirited authenticity. A solid 4/5 rating is deserved, marking it as a compelling chapter in The Doors' illustrious career.
Lots of good songs, feels like good 'car music'
Great album, classic rock, multiple songs added to rotation. However don’t think it reaches the heights of their self titled album. 4/5.
Manzarek Inn
I enjoyed this one and knew a few of the songs.
Decent, peace frog was banging - I enjoyed the album but it didn't feel outstanding.
Very good musically interesting rock álbum, melodically great, love Peace Frog and Queen of the Highway
This was a really good rock album! The Doors are maybe slightly underrated.
I really enjoyed quite a lot of the tracks
Love the doors, peace frog mega choon
better than expected, 4 stars
it was solid, glad i got to hear a the doors album that wasn’t self titled
Can't go wrong with The Doors. This record came after the poorly-received Soft Parade, and was seen as a "return to form" for the band. They chose to do a more straight forward blues sound on most tracks. There are also some solid psych tracks on here as well.
I really enjoyed this album! I have heard Doors songs, but never looked into them beyond the big hits. This album sounds so good and is very impressive for the era. This is my kind of music. I stray from giving 5 stars out of principle, I reserve that for albums with no skips that really agree with me. This would be 4.5 if possible.
Tykkäsin, juuri sopiva sateiseen keskuspuistoon. Vähän toivoisi, ettei Jim Morrison olisi menehtynyt niin nuorena.
Unique, dark
Solid Blues
Love the Doors
real nice
Epic album. Bluesy and beautiful.
- Only ever listened to self-titled and LA Woman before - Honestly think this is on a par with them - A few songs I didn't like, but the good ones are really good - Fav songs: Peace Frog, Land Ho!, Waiting for the Sun
Great album
1. Roadhouse Blues - sounds very 70s with the harmonica. Not too bad. 2. Waiting for the Sun - I’ve heard this before, one of their famous ones. I like it, it’s pretty pleasant for me. Like the verses better than chorus. 3. You Make Me Real - kinda catchy, but not liked his singing in the other two better. I like the piano. 4. Peace Frog - interesting instrumental, sounds really upbeat to me. 5. Blue Sunday - pretty different from the others, but i don’t mind it, definitely not very rocky. 6. Ship of Fools - don’t love this one, it’s not my style. 7. Land Ho! - I like the instrumental but the lyrical styles a little like country almost or something. 8. The Spy - this one is kinda bluesy, not loving it. A bit too slow. 9. Queen of the Highway - I actually quite like this one’s style. 10. Indian Summer - a little slow for me. 11. Maggie M’Gill - I like the guitar in this one, it sounds cool. I’ve never really listened to the Doors before so wasn’t sure what to expect but I quite liked some songs, maybe will explore some other stuff. Some of them were not that rocky which was surprising.
The Doors is one of the greatest bands of all time and although this is one is not one of their best albums it is still better than most.
Just a great r&b rock album. If the term existed when it was released the album is packed with bangers.
decent weak start but redeemed itself in the end 7/10
Great old!
Nice chill vibes, like that 60s rock sound
Cool and a bit ¿sassy?
Best album so far.
This was a good Doors album, not the best Doors album. The opening track Roadhouse Blues sets the tone, this is going to be a blues rock album. The first track is probably the best off this album. Peace Frog is another notable track. The album end with Maggie McGill, much the way it started as a bluesy rock song. Overall a goof album
Not really a doors fan but love the bluesy feel of this album.
Their last, some good things
It’s good I thought it was definitely gonna be a 5 but I think it’s more a 4, favourite track is waiting for the sun.
Love Blue Sunday. Probably not the best Doors album but still a great listen
Great album, very mellow while still being fun. Well Roadhouse Blues is anything but mellow, but the rest of the album felt very smooth
Alright! I bought this in high school during my Doors phase.
slay
Meget udmærket album med fine klassikere
Ooh boy, I enjoyed this. I love The Doors and this is no exception the mix of Blues rock and psychedelia is out of control, that organ is to die for.
This sounds like one of those albums that would be playing in a film set in America but not made there (possibly filmed entirely in Stoke) when a character walks into an out-of-town diner. Except this is actually good.
Meh songs played by incredible musicians
Think this is the 4th Doors album i've heard in it's entirety, and the second on this list after LA Woman. So far they haven't missed, everything I've heard from them has been great. Vocals are powerful, I love the heavy blues influence, and the organ sound is perfect. Can't wait to get more of them, as i'm sure there's more on this list.
To me this is the worst of The Doors four major releases. What made the album is Peace Frog and a spectacular transition into Blue Sunday. Nothing else really hits for me. Indian Summer could’ve been good but Morrison ruined it with awful lyricism. Maggie M’gill was a good final track. Roadhouse Blues is very overrated
The Doors are great! Love this music.
Top: peace frog, you make me real, ship of fools. Thought this was going to be kinda shit but actually really enjoyed it.
Consistently good bluesy, jazzy album musically, and I love Manzarek's keyboards as always. It's one of their best albums I think. Strong 4+.
Genialer Beginn im weiteren guter Rock.
If there’s one word I could use to describe this album it would be “raw” Favourite tracks: Roadhouse Blues, Waiting For The Sun, Peace Frog, Indian Summer
love the Doors
Definitely one of their best albums (all of their albums are one of their best albums)
Decent
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would, and I was impressed by the musicianship more than I thought I would. Roadhouse Blues is an absolute killer track, and the rest are a great variation on the Doors' sound. Surprisingly good.
Thought it was ok the first listen. Felt that other Doors albums were better. After second listen, I understood the cohesion. There's some sort of feeling expressed that connects all of the songs. I still think it's middle of the pack in the discography.
Good album not the doors best though
Pretty cool album! Of course I knew a few songs already but never listened to the whole thing. Can definitely understand Scott Weiland comparisons to Jim Morrison!
5 stars for influential. 3 stars for I've heard it waaaaay too much.
Very strong
Super solid
This is blues rock I guess? It's alright for the most part. Nothing I particularly enjoy a whole lot, but slightly better than the average album on this list. For something that came out in 1970, it sounds like something that should have come out 6 - 10 years after. Thankfully it doesn't suffer from the pitfalls of other 70's music and the songs are concise and don't have any padding or overstay their welcome. The instrumentation/production is pretty good too. I don't know much about this album, but it feels like it would or should have been influential for the genre at the time. It didn't overstay its welcome either being only 37 minutes long. I was going to give it a high 3, but this has earned a low 4/5
Very good, me ayudo con la migraña
Classic cliassic
A classic, has some low moments but otherwise pretty damn good. Roadhouse Blues and Peace Frog almost don’t even feel like they’re part of the album because of how many times I’ve heard them on soundtracks or on the radio.
4.5
It was good. Classic album. 4*
The Doors aren’t my favorite but as usual I enjoyed hearing songs that haven’t been played to death. Incidentally, it was interesting learning the origin of the name “Hard Rock Cafe.”
Not my favourite album by The Doors. Not their best. Still solid just does not sound as iconic as their debut or L.A. Woman. It’s The Doors in good forma so an almost 4/5 anyways. Fav Tracks: Waiting For The Sun, Peace Frog
started like ass then then waiting for the sun came on and i think i ascended to the sun and then the rest was amazing
I enjoyed a decent bit of the songs on this album, makes me interested in possibly listening to more of The Doors in the future.
A nice bluesy album. I liked it a lot.
Been a while since I've listened to The Doors. Ought to be fun. Roadhouse Blues is one of the ultimate driving jams. Never tire of following that bass-line and harmonica melody. Waiting for the Sun is a solid jam with some ominous overtones. You Make Me Real has that harpsichord base that makes it seem like it was recorded in an old-time bar. Morrison owns the record with his commanding vocals -- man had a presence. Peace Frog is one of my all time favorite Doors tracks. Love the playful call-response of the tune paired with stereo production and the Hammond organ in the background. Such a groovy little jam. Enjoy how this drops seamlessly into Blue Sunday which is a toned down ballad of sorts. What a voice the man had... Beginning of Land Ho! reminds me of "Just a Girl" by No Doubt. Wonder if they had to pay royalties? Either way, I actually prefer the No Doubt song here -- more energy. Overall this is a soft 4/5 for me. The back half is weak relative to the first, but altogether The Doors at some of their finest.
Good, liked most of it
Classic groundbreaking album.
Hey now this Jim Morrison guy is an absolute creep
I love how this bridges 60s styles with new rock trends. It occupies a sweet pocket that I don't think a lot of bands found -either swinging farther into each side of the spectrum. Super solid and fun to listen to.
Hadn't listened to The Doors for years, but I enjoyed this. More of a sense of humour than I expected.
Pretty Great album.
Vraiment bon,mun classique 4,85
Probably the second-best Doors album after their self-titled. You'll love this if you think drinking beer for brekkie and acting like a dickhead is cool.
Fun listen. Bery cool
Liked a lot of the songs and didn't dislike any of the songs. I need to listen to the other Doors to see which I like the best. Rating: 3.5
More classic music from The Doors: the rocking "Roadhouse Blues", plus the moody "Waiting for the Sun" and "The Spy".
Un gran disco de The Doors, tiene canciones excepcionales como Roadhouse blues, peace frog y waiting for the sun, sin embargo creo que esta banda tiene en su catálogo otros albums que merecían más el privegio de estar en el libro.
Doors are a vibe. Love Jim Morrison's voice eternally.
ok
I had a big Doors phase in my twenties but it's been a while since I've really dove in much, so this was a nice one to have come up. Not my favourite of the lot, but features a couple of my favourite tunes. Which sounds a lot like my notes for Songs From a Room - in fact I could mostly just cut and paste a lot of them because this one too has a killer Hard Rock Cafe side and then loses a bit of that steam on the Morrison Hotel side. All in all, a solid return to blues rock form after getting a little more symphonic and experimental on the previous album.
enjoyable
roadhouse blues uhh i really like this guitar. really cool guitar stuff i nthe 1:50 mark waiting for the sun is dope i dont have a lot to say
Not their greatest album, but it's close. Most of that stems from Morrison's pretentiousness being held back somehow. This band could really cook when they leaned into their love of the blues, as evidenced on the opening track.
Fun album, bluesy, lots of great songs. Roadhouse Blues is probably my all time favorite by the band.
Really good album. Was surprised after L.A. Woman being so meh (for me). 4/5
I always considered this one kind of mid for The Doors, but it has some of their best musicianship in it, their jazziest compositions and the band is up for it. I don’t always love Morrison’s poetry, but he doesn’t feel like the most important member here, despite the title. This is one of the few Doors albums I don’t own, should fix that. B
"Waiting For The Sun" is one of my favorite songs by The Door. And the fact that this track is *not* on the album that bears its name has always confused me somehow. The *Waiting For The Sun* LP is a lesser album, by the way--only this one here, the self-titled debut and *LA Women* should be considered for such a list (with maybe *Strange Days* as well, at least if there's enough room for it at the end). The rest of the tunes in *Morrisson Hotel* is very good too, even if not as stellar as this psychedelic, catchy romp I've just mentioned. Oh, and that photograph on the album cover is iconic as well, which doesn't hurt. 4/5 stars. Number of albums left to review: 598 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 192 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 90 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 120
Wasn't expecting to like this but pretty good. Listen again
Classic
8/10. weno y sin misses pero el s/t es mejor por caleta. estas chalas son de los grupos mas consistentes hasta lo q he escuchado
why did they think land ho was a good idea 3.7/5
I liked it! A good mix of tempos. Some songs were bluesy, some were psychedelic. I put this album off for a while because we were skiing. I'm glad I did because this is not a skiing album.
Fun album to listen to while cooking salmon al pastor
Easy to see why Peace Frog is in so many movies with classic rock soundtracks. The album was a little uneven imo but overall very good and psychedelic bluesy.
When playing straight up blues, they sound pretty average, but the SoCal hipster-psyche stuff is still striking and impressive.
I could hear the dads of the world unite and say "proper music this" as soon as the first track started. They've probably got a point. This album got looped a few times for me as I went to and from the dentist today and got better for it. For me the more interesting stuff on this album was the looser, more surreal or pyschadelic material. With Waiting for the Sun and Blue Sunday standing out. Lyrically I'm not quite sure what's going on but it just sounds right, like hazey rocker poetry. Indian Summer would have been up there too but musically was a little to close to The End to surprise like those other two had. The other tracks are all at least good and got more interesting with more listens. Probably an album that belongs in the pantheon of rock counter culture.
