Reviews (page 10 of 13)

The title track is obviously great, but the whole album is a bit more of the same.

Nærmest det mest horny album på listen, men det er også ret classy. Begge albums vi har haft med ham har været virkelig lækkert produceret. Stor 3

All time liderlig plade, synes noget af det er lidt *for* smooth dog

Kjys mæ

this is not a bad marvin gaye record by any measure. it's just not one of his greats. the album is bookended by two legit great tracks: "let's get in one" and "just to keep you satisfied." remarkable tracks, the both of them. the rest of the album is just a bit of a let down in that it's all pretty samey. not much musical or lyrical stretching going on during all this getting it on.

Top Songs: Let's Get It On Come Get To This

What can I say, I'm very partial to some mototown and this is a quality litte album. it's a nice short length I feel like any longer it would lose its energy. It's easy listening so no real complaints, will maybe listen to some of the songs in the future.

Marvin Gaye didn’t just make an album — he basically created a public service announcement for romance. Let’s Get It On is so smooth it should come with a warning label and maybe even a parental advisory for future parents. Every track glides along with that effortless, velvety charm only Marvin could summon. Honestly, it’s less an album and more a population‑boosting device. I dread to think how many babies owe their existence to this record… possibly nations. Short, sweet, silky. Just like Marvin intended.

has the late 60's early 70's sound that i love about carole king

Wasn't actually as good as I expected from the Gaye

First time truly giving Marvin Gaye a whole listen and this album is what I expect classic Marvin to be. Slow, sensual, sympathizing, and soulful. Probably a good album to put on over or after dinner during cleanup.

kort og godt, sexy. måske også lidt et album man hører lidt i baggrunden på en café? er ikke blæst bagover hehe

haha holy shit 2 seconds to a song i knew/5

Torn between 3 and 4 but rounding up. The highs are high af. Please Stay was a highlight. Drums sound amazing. Agree it’s a bit one note and repetitive, but if this was the only Marvin album in existence I’d listen to it 1000 times. Sounds a lot like What’s Going On but less interesting musically and lyrically. Fuck might go 3 now. Sorry Marv.

This album feels like it was designed specifically to be listened to while having very sensual sex. But I’m a white boy from Massachusetts who has sex only in the dark in complete stifling silence so some of that appeal is lost on me.

Not as good as other the Gaye albums were. A little one-note and predictable. That said, there’s some amazing music here. Just To Keep You Satisfied really pushed me back. Very vulnerable take on romance and jealousy.

Let's Get It On was one of my favorite songs in high school for two reasons: (1) I was developing my taste in music that included R&B and soul like Sam Cooke and Stevie Wonder, and (2) it's so goddamn funny. The premise of an entire song being about convincing a woman to have sex with you, the arguments he makes for why this woman should have sex with him ("If you believe in love, let's get it on"). If you don't want to have sex with me, right now, you must not believe in love! You fool! Man the 70s were wild. I'm loling at the decision not only to have a second, nearly identical song called "Keep Gettin' It On" on this album, but to put it as track 4. He leads off with Let's Get it On, you think you're out of the woods, but 2 tracks later BOOM WE'RE BACK. This guy was horny as hell and couldn't get enough of that groove Apart from those two songs (really one song), this album is pretty forgettable. Funk soul isn't my favorite type of soul. I'd take Solomon Burke over Marvin

I could have enjoyed it more in a different setting, I just don’t listen to sex music like this regularly so it’s very different. But I did appreciate it and I did enjoy the musical aspect a lot, smooth chill yet exciting it was pretty cool.

I struggle a little with Marvin Gaye - I don't think I have heard any of these songs before?? It has an incredibly luscious production and a great feel to it. If anyone was ever to ask me which artist epitomizes pop-soul (I have no doubt someone will one day) I would say Marvin Gaye, and now I have heard Let's Get It On, I might, if I remember it, say this album. However my memory isn't great and there is something about it that I thoroughly enjoy but it just doesn't stick... therein lies the problem. It's mighty pop soul but I have to leave it there.

Too much saxophone for me, but it’s definitely a good piece of music, musically and lyrically.

"Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye is a very sexy record, full of smooth soul grooves and openly suggestive lyrics. It has that laid-back, intimate vibe that makes it incredibly easy to listen to from start to finish. This is probably my favourite Marvin Gaye album overall. Everything flows effortlessly, and it feels more relaxed and direct than some of his other work. It's the kind of record you can put on without really thinking about it and just enjoy. I also own the MFSL version of the album, and the sound quality is excellent. It sounds warm, detailed, and very well balanced, which fits the music perfectly.

I was surprised because this is the first album slightly over 100 albums in that I was looking forward to but liked less than expected. I like Marvin Gaye and enjoy his voice. Let's Get It On (the song) is a classic. After that though, I feel like it all blended together. None of the other songs stood out to me. Someone on a different review mentioned that these songs were probably intended to have on in the background while having sex, so I'd imagine these songs would hit different in that context. However, I was cleaning my house so it obviously didn't feel the same lol.

Muy "smooth" sin lugar a dudas, demasiado para mi gusto, aunque creo que con futuras escuchas hay mucho detalle de fondo que podría disfrutar

Lets get it on,

1/15/26. Classic. 6.5/10

It's ok.

I like this more than "Here, My Dear" which we rated and reviewed a few weeks ago. On that album, I felt like Marvin Gaye sort of dragged the listener through his divorce, and left us to feel his pain and sorrow. This album equally pulls the listening in, but this time it's into his bedroom. This is a place as a listener I am only interested in spending a certain amount of time in. This album felt like it forced me to spend too much time this place and at certain points I was looking for a way out. Well done, highly effective, but all together too much of whatever exactly this is.

Great soulful stuff enjoyed it

Not my usual but pretty good

If I die tonight: amazing saxophone instrumental. Chill slow vibes Distant lover: good celestial feel to it. Lots of cool chimes Let's get it on: i can see why this is a classic used a lot. Definitely an excellent song OVERALL: Good album for some romance

Very feel good album most likely because it was soul and because Marvin Gaye's voice is just so smooth. Even when his vocals had a little growl and then they still flowed well with the tracks. Saxophone addition was also a nice touch all throughout. 6.5/10, Favorite Song: You Sure Love To Ball

I just couldn't get into it. It's not a bad album, but didn't hold my interest

It’s nice. Smooth jazzy soul. Nothing too fancy.

Had heard let's get it on. I don't know how I feel about the weird drum they use in Come Get To This.

Every song sounded the same.

okayyy but not my fav jazz thing in the world

Obviously a very passionate album - cannot connect with it fully but can clearly identify the musical choices. It has its moments but there are not many stand outs melodically for me but I do not think that is a take away. It's definitely something you would put on if you were in the mood - would make great background sound iykwim. Fav songs apart from Let's Get It On - Please Don't Stay, Come Get To This - really enjoyed the melodies of these so subtle but effective ultimately felt sensual in a way I understood it. Didn't mind Distant Lover as well loved the echoed background vocals in response. Overall a good calm experience just not usually my vibe. 6-6.5/10 :)

Trevligt album, ingen låt som riktigt sticker ut eller något jag kommer lyssna på igen men bara bra låtar!

Definitely a classic. It does get a little repetitive for me though.

this album makes me want to *make love to my woman* (i am wearing yellow aviators and what one might describe as bellbottoms. the boys have been pulled out of vietnam and smoking is still cool, i think, probably. my dashboard is wood panel and my steering wheel is fur-lined. nixon wept on live television and we all felt kinda bad about it. the big mac costs a nickel and it takes me like a minute to dial a number on my big dumb telephone. life is good) favorite song is Come Get To This

Decent, doesn't evoke any more emotion than that 5.7/10

Very situational listen yknow... 6.3/10

Enjoyed, despite how sexual it was

Lets get it on is a familiar classic that has rang slightly deaf due to overuse but a classic none thee less. The classic RnB sound is less familiar to me but must say I'm loving every vocal and instumental movement from the beutiful range of Marvin Gaye himself but also the full atmospheric and relaxing melodies and flows presented by the instrumental. The few faults that I can find however there are some songs such as Come get to this and you sure love to ball that sound while nice more flat and not as exciting as the other tracks. 7.5/10 first thoughts

3.5 (31:36, 8 tracks, 12th album, 1973) Soul Best song is the title track - some of the album seems like filler, 12 albums in Gaye was still innovated and creating hits which, in and of itself, is pretty impressive. Tortured life. A compilation album by Gaye would be a 5 for sure but overall this album is good, not great.

Soul ain't my thing. But it's hard to hate the singing and the production on this. Distant Lover the standout but I do worry if it's because it was familiar to me because, rather than in spite, of Kanye.

6/10 I think it’s a good album , I added 2 songs from this album to my SIDWOMW playlist. I didn’t give it a higher rating just because it’s not an album that I think I’ll be coming back to, but definitely not an album that I’d be running to jump. Favorite song : if I should die tonight

Pleasing music to the heart and ears. Fun and relaxing

opa apreciei, nao é algo que ouviria, a nao ser aquela do its too late for u and meeeeeee

Pretty enjoyable album! Very smooth and he has such a nice voice. Yeah it’s horny but it’s jazz so makes sense This man is down bad but he can damn well sing. Pretty enjoyable although every song felt kind of like the same thing but he put his all into every one

Other than Let's Get It On, I didn't hear much of note on this album.

The first song is a classic, I definitely knew it before. At least the beginning was somehow remixed I think. The vibes are vibing with the first song.

A phenomenal title track, accompanied by an albums worth of competent but uninspired slow jams

if i should die today is a pretty good song, kinda jazzy. the first couple was not that good honestly. the title song (keep gettin it on) is sooooo funkl lmao. kinda good i think.

Great singer. Solid record.

A very horny record but it is not my vibe today. It did get me thinking about Here, My Dear though (no shade to my significant other!)

yeah its cool, love his voice and there's some great reverbs on his voice. Can totally see how later people like Michael Jackson were inspired by him, there's the origin for a song which Michael Jackson interpolated on here, the 'heaven knows every night' bit. Backings are solid, I love the backing singers on some songs. Glad its not too long, as I feel like it might get boring. I guess kind of excited to hear whats going on, which must be one here. favourte songs: first and last 3. Overall around 6/10 (feels quite close to 7)

a good classic, i do see myself coming around to it more

I liked it. Not sure I’d listen in full again— none of the songs really grabbed me. Good chill background music (though I suppose the context would have to be quite sexual lol). My favourite song is Let’s Get It On.

The title track rules. Everything else is passable, but doesn't rise to the same level. 3.5/5

Nice. Smooth and well mixed. Feels like fucking.

Nice vibes

It’s good but too boring for my liking, very repetitive, found it fun and calming to listen though!!

As someone who was introduced to the title track of this record by Jack Black in High Fidelity, I'm clearly not qualified to give any kind of universal critique of this album. However, following up 'What's Going On' with 'Let's Get It On' is a very funny choice considering the subject matter of both records. It's almost as funny as cueing up a reprise of the title track called 'Keep Gettin' It On' only 4 tracks in. The message seems to be: 'This isn't round 2. This is superhuman stamina that is extending round 1.' And did I mention there's a song called 'You Sure Love to Ball' complete with female moaning that I can only assume were field recordings? As Jack Black pointed to (perhaps somewhat problematically), there is a benefit to having a sense of humor about this music, which I guess is the same thing as confessing that one is not personally capable of being strictly earnest when it comes to erotic RnB, even if you appreciate the music. As far as this particular micro-genre goes, I guess I prefer a little nastiness, aka Prince. As a result, the corniest moments of this album don't go down as smooth for me as their analogues on 'What's Going On.' All that said, there is a lot to like here. Obviously. Favorite song: 'Please Don't Stay (Once You Go Away)'

Fine, just fine. Well performed but a lot of the songs were very samey to me

Funny to know the titular track has a sequel, but all in all it's background music to me and nothing more.

Kinda underwhelming

148 O sea, let's get it on. Pero creo que el disco incluía la siestecita luego de darlo todo. El What's going on le pega mil patadas a este disco. Sorry.

Half of it is too tapid for me. The other half is all right - although I do not like this genre.

Feels a little derivative of What’s Going On. Even Keep Gettin It On feels like the jam after Let’s Get It On. Obviously a great soul album but I’ll just choose What’s Going On everytime.

A little too crooney for me but still respect a legend

Fun, I can see many influences from this music style (Anderson Paak, Bruno Mars), but I didn't love it enough to give it a 4. Blended together in the end, there wasn't even enough to take notes on

Little Richard, in his wisdom, knew that the best way to smuggle filth into polite society was to tuck it neatly inside a homophone. Miss Molly liked to bawl and ball, and the joy was in pretending you didn’t notice the difference. Marvin Gaye, oddly enough, abandons such subtlety. On You Sure Love to Ball, the strings swirl around trying to convince you that the song is really about a woman who likes to attend elegant soirées. No one is fooled for even a bar. The coy euphemism of ‘getting it on’ is slightly embarrassing. But that’s the secret of a make-out record: the words are the formalwear, the tux and bow tie you shed the moment things get interesting. You’re not meant to listen; you’re meant to drift. And here the rhythms - slow, warm, slightly smug in their own effectiveness - do exactly what they’re meant to. And here they’re so unhurried, so insistently sensual, that the half-hour running time starts to feel positively tantric. 2.5 Marvin Gaye is such a terrific singer it almost doesn’t matter that a lot of this album feels barely composed. How many of those ‘Oooooo’s and ‘BaaaayBE’s and ‘Shuuugaaa’s were in the original script? It hardly matters when every one of them is delivered with such conviction. I really believed in the journey Marvin takes us on here. I was completely convinced that he wanted, keenly, for that girl on side A to stay and get It on. He was no less convincing on side B when he told us how he [checks notes] ‘ball[ed]’ her and then left her. What a magnificent voice. 2.5/5

His voice is great, the album is produced and performed very well, but the songs overall aren’t strong enough for a lot of repeat listens.

Very slick but a bit more boring than i expected. 3.4 stars

Great voice.

There’s nothing more smooth than Marvin’s voice. Nothing.

Good mood music by a legend.

Sexy time. Iconic opening track. He must have known it would be a hit because he had a full reprise called keep getting it on mid way through the record. Not sure if that’s lazy or brilliant.

Some of this was good and some absolute cringe. No in between

Chill, relax, good vibes, easy listening.

I know the title track and that’s it. Excited to hear more from Marvin. Enjoyable R&B. What a voice! Not something I’ll return to, but glad I’ve listened to more than just the singles. 3.5/5

Title track is classic and already familiar with. The remaining tracks were smooth and enjoyable.

Let's Get It On, the song, is good. However there really isn't anything else on this album I would listen to again. Even with Let's Get It On, I can't even imagine being in a situation in the future where it would feel appropriate to put it on.

I’ll start by saying Marvin Gaye is awesome. But, while liked a few of the songs on this record, it wasn’t my favorite. I’m saving more stars for a record of his I like better.

Quite a feat for every member of this project, who got this album, now being pregnant. Fair play. Silk Sonic much?! Not only ‘Lets get it on’ but also ‘keep gettin’ it on’! 😂 it’s a smooth, seductive and groovy little album. Great soul and groin aching feel. I enjoy it, but not blown away. It’s a certain vibe, for a certain context or mood and does that very well. But will I go back in an indescript moment for music? Probably not. Had my fill by the end (that’s what she said) - 3.5

Let's Get It On is a banger. The rest of the album is smooth and sexy and a little bit funky and a little bit jazzy and unfortunately it just kinda washed over me a bit.

Those opening licks - it's like the guitar's taking its pants off, ready for the lovemaking session that's about to occur. Stir it round, sprinkle some sax, mix in some of the best vocals you can get, add a dollop of strings and a soupçon of funky bass, and you got yourself a stone cold sex-classic. It's so good in fact they realise after a few more tracks that it can't be topped, so reprise it in the manner of Sexual Chocolate ('Keep Getting It On') - and basically takes the view that Jesus wants you to fuck. Right out the playbook of a dirty pastor. Even the cover appears as though he maybe being administered fellatio. It's certainly not as good as 'What's Going On'. It's certainly more consistent than 'Here My Dear'. The tracks start to falter over the course of the album; the lyrics can feel a little trite off the back of 'What's Going On'; yet some of the grooves, arrangements and of course that unrivalled vocal remains captivating at times. It all balances out in the end.

Great soulful voice but very samey songs for me. Meh

It's hard to take this seriously when Let's Get It On is the soundtrack to every hacky comedy of the last 25 years when they're doing a weird sex scene. Through the whole album I got the feeling Jason Biggs was fingering and apple pie or Tom Green was jacking off a horse. It's fine, the other one is better though right? The one about social injustice and racism in the 70s. It's harder to have an embarrassing sexual incident to Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler) and maybe that's what the world needs right now.

Very short album. I get it, it's about sex. Calm down Marvin 😂

Not my favorite. Three stars

Great everyone knows this album

Let's Get It On is a classic for a reason. Other than that, this half-an-hour album just kinda sounds the same smooth, soulful, sensual style. It's good, but to me, nothing much to write home about.

Fun listen, with some good songs amongst the more forgettable ones.

Marvin Gaye's sex album (Gaye sex album?!). It even includes The Sex Song™. Can't say I remember anything else from it, but it all did sound very smooth and sensual, which I guess is the point. Mission accomplished, I guess. Key tracks: Let's Get It On

Great follow up to “What’s Going On”, but not quite as good. Highlights: “Let’s Get It On” and “Just to Keep You Satisfied”

Definitely music to bump and grind to, the dirty bastaad. A pleasant listen even without getting it on.

Cover 4 There are some great songs on this album but honestly despite it being one of Marvin's most beloved but this isn't one I tend to come back to. I do like it. Don't necessarily love it. I think this would depend on my mood.

Love Marvin Gaye’s voice!! And dang was this album sensual. I’m embarrassed to say this, but I think I’d’ve let Marvin beat around this bush all day long 😁 Speaking more critically about the album, it did seem to run together a bit, but it wasn’t very long and so it didn’t get monotonous. Besides Let’s Get It On there was nothing that stood out too much to me, but that’s not a dig. It was a good album, and I enjoyed it the whole way through.

Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On is undeniably smooth and sensual, a cornerstone of soul music that defined the sound of romantic intimacy. The title track remains iconic—seductive, silky, and effortlessly cool. However, much of the album leans heavily on the same mood and tempo, making it feel repetitive over time. While Gaye’s vocals are outstanding and the grooves are lush, the record lacks the variety and lyrical depth found in his later, more complex works. Still, it’s an influential and enjoyable listen, even if it doesn’t quite reach its full potential across the whole runtime.

Alas, this one’s been ruined for me by the ubiquity and overexposure of the title track licensed to become the go-to soundtrack for commercials, tv, and film as shorthand for “these 2 people are in love.” It's so overexposed what might've been a hot, sensual track years ago is now as vanilla and wholesome as a cialis commercial's beige palette. Thanks Marvin Gaye Estate for another incredible winning contribution to the culture! That aside, purely as a technical achievement LGIO, much like What’s Going On, is a sustained feeling across the instrumentation, melodies, and Gaye’s performances. It’s a vivid, if single note colour.

Easy grooves

Groovy tunes to fuck to. Couldn't imagine another use case.

The classic soundtrack for if you need to get it on. I mean, it's on the title, fellas! Listening through it though, it all gets kind of samey.

I have given albums a 3 before for being situational. Can you think of that situation? We all can, right? Well it does that particular thing very well.

I see where Prince is coming from.

it was groovy and cool, but kinda boring and dull. It was as if I was listening to a looong single track

Marvin Gaye, the original Chef from South Park, wants to give his woman good lovin', probably a few times. A soul classic, but at my age, if I started listening to this too much, I'm just going to worry my wife! I preferred What's Going On.

Having listened to "What's Going On" and loving that album, I expected this to be a very similar or equal experience. However, I liked this way less than I imagined. He maintains the super clean production, sweet singing and very groovy instrumentation, which are things that I appreciate very much. What changed in this album are the lyrical themes, focusing only on love, and I do believe the melodies are not as impactful or beautiful as the ones in the previous record. Everytime I listened to this album, I lose my concentration after a while and it ends up as background music for me (but very groovy background music) , so that's why I'm giving it 3 stars.

Muy sexy pero se me quedó en lo lento! 3.5

I did not expect to be aroused at work. I only know Marvin Gaye from "Let's get it on", and I was pleasantly surprised when the rest of this album was just as seductive/horny. It was a really pleasant listen.

It's really good, but I'm pretty sure that album is intended to only be listened to in the bedroom.

Starts strong and gets the going on when the going is going on.

Liked it, didn't love it.

Classic 70s R&B soul music. Marvin Gaye is a top three singer of all time for me and this not a bad album at all. The baby making vibe can make it a difficult one to randomly throw on in certain situations, and the songs can blend together. It’s a solid album but nothing blew me away. 3/5

This is considered a classic, however, for me there are too few great songs.

-i think i’ve gotten to a point in my music exploration ventures that i was able to appreciate this a lot more than What’s Goin’ On. i’d like to listen to both again -Let’s Get It On felt very different to me. a lot more saccharine… god damn this man was horny when he made it. hard to envision myself listening to this casually so no super high ranking or anything, but i enjoyed -Favorites are Let’s Get It On and Please Don’t Stay (Once You Go Away)

Could listen to the drums all day

classic. most of these songs i've played at gigs

Basically sex music.

Not his fault, let's get it on became a lazy movie/tv reference. Song still holds up! A bit of sameness to the tracks and a slightness to the album. 3.5 rounded down Heard before? Some Owned: No 16/1001, 16/62 (25%) Will I get? Probably not

The whole album is literally all baby making music and there’s only one appropriate time to listen to this. Favorite song: n/a

si, un bel disco che però non riesce a lasciarmi un impatto. forse non sono nel mood giusto. è sensualmente triste

Nice enough for one listen, especially if you're into 70s Soul music, but there is nothing standing out. All the tracks are extremely similar to each other. 2.5/5

Marvin Gaye doing Marvin Gaye

Once again a good album. I like Marvin Gaye but it is not something i'd keep on my daily rotation. Though some of the songs surely are enjoyable, i didn't find anything to write home about. So i'd give the album a 3/5 or a decent 7 out of 10

Wonderful voice. Enjoyed several songs.

original track list for Marvin Gaye's 'Let's Get It On' album: 1. Let's Get It On 2. Keep Gettin' It On 3. Still Gettin' It On 4. Can't Stop Gettin' It On 5. Took a Break, Now Gettin' It On Again 6. Gettin' It On and On and On and On and On … etc

Great voice.

I didn't listen to this under the best circumstances just trying to get through during the workday. It didn't stand out as much to me as I would have thought. I will have to try it again another time

It makes you need to have sex, so make sure you have someone with you when you listen.

Ayyy, I’m tryna fuck

Sweet sexy seductive soul-jams. Marvin is bringing the heat for his lady, and while there are a few same-same songs, who cares? 30 minutes of goodness. And I have never noticed how great the drumming is on some of these--whoever the session genius was, well done.

This is Marvin Gaye with his usual soulful singing, but this album is a change from the previous Motown produced music. This record has more complex recording than the older Motown songs. Overall it’s relaxing listening, with a few good tunes, but for me it doesn’t rate as high as the critics have rated it.

Another LJ-icon album cover! This is interesting because I know exactly two Marvin Gaye songs going in: 'Let's Get It On' (zzz, thumbs down) and 'What's Going On' (thumbs up). So it could go either way! Actually, maybe I was too strict about 'Let's Get It On' -- even though it's so overplayed (and hard to take seriously therefore, especially because it was featured in, yes, the hit NBC drama "Parenthood")), it's actually pretty good. Though I have never once considered Ed Sheeran's 'Thinking Out Loud' to sound similar (apparently there were some lawsuits on the matter). We ARE all sensitive people! More subjunctive: "If I should die tonight / though it be far before my time"... maybe the subjunctive isn't as rare as I thought. Also, how am I so confident this is a subjunctive and not AAVE? The power of context, I guess. These sure are slow jams. I like the sax and strings and MG's got a good voice, but it's all a little too chill for me. I like that there's also a song called 'Keep Gettin' It On'. A real concept album here. Thanks to 'You Sure Love to Ball', I learned that "ball" is (or, more likely, was) slang for getting it on, which makes a lot more sense in this context than the much more common modern meanings of "play basketball" or "be cool". Good to know so I don't embarrass myself in front of Marvin Gaye. (Just kidding -- he also died tragically.) Good but sleepy. That's a solid 3.

This is the kind of album where I wonder how many more pregnancies occurred because of it. Marvin sure found a lot of ways to tell us how much he loves this girl and how much he wants to have sex with her. I was even a bit bored hearing about it until “Just To Keep You Satisfied” recontextualizes the whole thing. Describing the incredible high of love for seven songs straight gives the break-up song great power due to the build-up, especially because I had no idea we were going there. It brings the whole thing back down to Earth and gives the album a strong narrative punch. Despite his name, Marvin sure isn’t Gaye.

This is love making music! Luckily Marvin had the foresight to put the biggest track at the top of the album and then add really good album to listen to after all the Lovin’ business was finished. Let’s be honest: if his intention was to make a sex album it could have been under fifteen minutes, and for married men it could have had one song and ASMR. Key tracks, of course, are the opener, which I still struggle to listen to without thinking of Jack Black’s rendition in High Fidelity, but I also liked You sure Love To Ball. This is a good album, but not a Thanksgiving with the family album.

Random thoughts: * Let's Get It On is probably the best let's get freaky song of all time. * Keep Gettin' It On was a pretty good sequel too. * I would have played this a lot had I lived in the 70s. * The rest of the music doesn't quite live up to "Let's Get It On" but that classic makes this a must listen.

So far it seems like the quality of Marvin Gaye albums directly corresponds to what’s on his mind at the time? The state of the world? Great. His divorce? Real bad. His horniness? Fine.

3/5 very seductive 😏 But solid r&b

I always liked the title track for this one, but the rest of the album isn't as good. The first side is quite good -- second side less so. The title track is the standout, but "Please Don't Stay" and "If I Should Die Tonight" are also highlights. 3.5 stars.

Amazing opening track but the rest of the album is quite bland and it's only 30 minutes long

Very nice and chill album, the first song was the most popular but the rest were also pretty nice. Overall, quite enjoyable having this playing while you're doing something.

67/1001 Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ❎ It's not the Marvin Gaye record I would naturally reach for, however it's undeniable its importance for the R'n'B genre later on down the line.

Listened while working, made me want to eat pineapple

Baby making music for those who have incredible stamina. Good stuff!

I mean it is pretty solid, just not really something I'd listen to on my own at all.

I can’t even pretend that I’d listen to this on a regular basis but I gotta commend the man for making a whole sex album be this damn smooth. I mean this dude is a real yearner. They don’t make em like this anymore.

Great soul album. I think half the population conceived that year was probably to these songs. However, not my favorite overall and could use a little more variety. What's Going On is head and shoulders above it.

Enjoyed this slightly more than Here My Dear. Enjoyed "Let's Get It On" obviously, but also liked "Come Get to This"

Inoffensive and pleasant though not something I’d go back to often

Its a classic

Iconic, but a little one note. “Let’s Get It On” will forever be the anthem of getting down with the one you love, but did it require a whole album to get that point across? Less of a bummer than his divorce album though, I’ll give you that

Smooth soulful 70s r&b

Also ok, doesn’t do much for me but it works in the background. Better than two so I’ll give it a three.

Decent soulful album with a consistent sound from start to finish.

Not the best Gaye album

Jag tror han vill get it on… Bra musik i alla fall Tog slut lite väl snabbt

6/10 Ahem, I find it a bit... boring? And "You Sure Love to Ball" is comical to my ear. But there is so much quality here and I ain't denying that, I just find it hard to get invested in an album so rooted in rooting. Wonderfully short, mind.

Classic! Can‘t go wrong with this one. Doesn’t get me to shoot out of my seat with my hands clutching my heart, but always good to hear- and makes me feel like a blues-y person which is never a bad thing!

So this came out after What's Going On, which is the only other Marvin Gaye album I've listened to. Half these songs I recognise from samples lol

Title track is amazing. Most of the album is bedroom soul.

I got it on. It was good, not great again. Maybe I'm just not the biggest Motown guy. Top tracks: "Let's Get It On," "Distant Lover"

--Let's Get It On...this track makes me think about boomers drunkenly "dancing" at various wedding parties in my past. Not Marvin's fault but it is what it is --Please Don't Stay (Once You Go Away)...nice but not his best work --If I Should Die Tonight...sappy but what a voice --Keep Gettin' It On...an unnecessary reprise. would make more sense as a closer --Come Get to This...decent funk with some doo-wop --Distant Lover...more of a vocal jam than a song but the vocals are amazing --You Sure Do Love To Ball...I don't know what this phrase meant in the 70s and I'm afraid to ask. Sounds nice and funky --Just to Keep You Satisfied...a mediocre song carried by amazing vocals. I stand by my earlier opinion that 'Keep Gettin'...' should have closed

a voz desse homem, meus amigos... que voz! 3,5

Decent music, not quite my kinda stuff

Marvin is a very cool guy. ONLY gave it 3 stars because he has better albums than this.

Good not behind blown away

Fun stuff. Very sexy.

Classic Marvin but much smoother than what’s going on and without the edge and bite good but not world beating.

Good enough soul music but not sure where the niche is for me to play this. In the bedroom would surely be too much of a statement and throw unwanted pressure on my performance..but also unlikely to play it with friends and I'm not *quite* narcissistic enough to play when alone. So...🤷‍♀️

This is one sexy album. The thing is, I don’t need an entire album of sexiness, and even though it’s only 31 minutes end-to-end, it’s still way too long for my performance requirements. I like the opening track and to be perfectly honest the 4 minutes and 50 seconds it offers is pretty much sure to fulfill any of my bedroom needs. Musically, I find it a little bit one paced and it doesn’t engage me in the way that “what’s going on?” does. It’s almost a precursor to much of the more modern takes on soul music which I thoroughly detest. I’m a bit “Meh” with Marvin here.

nice 3.5

The title track is hard to compete with, but the rest of the album is never less than enjoyable - beautiful vocal arrangements especially.

18/07/2025 I found it kinda weak and boring.

I don't think I've ever heard something from Marvin Gaye that wasn't sensual 3.5/5

I was surprised how short it was. I felt it stayed in comfort zone for most of the album, with the last track trying something different (but staying in the relaxed feel), but it didn't wow me.

I like the album, but think there's probably a more typically Motown album I'd like more. The drums on some tracks in particular are really great. Some of the Latin rhythms though weren't my cup of tea. 3 for me

Lovely sound but ends on weaker tracks.

seksi!

Listens: 4 Standout tracks: Let's Get It On, If I Should Die Tonight I tried to think of a witty or clever remark or pun about how this album will help get you laid or at least increase your chances with a prospective partner, but I couldn't think of anything before I had to submit my rating :( . Also It's been a bit of a dry spell lately, so, thanks a lot for reminding me Marvin Gaye.

funky and good but nowhere near what’s going on

I can see how this was premium boning music back in the day

I know this is an iconic album. But Let's Get It On has been played out quite a bit and the rest of the album lost my attention.

An enjoyable listen but not particularly remarkable other than Let’s Get It On.

I mean, it's good. But the title track is doing a lot of heavy lifting. The rest of the album, while still good, just doesn't have that standout material.

Beautiful, short and sweet at 30 minutes. But also didn't really move me too much. But nice for what it was, glad I heard it.

this one had me bricked up many such cases!

3.5/5 A smooth and sexy album. Top tracks: let's get it on, please don't stay, keep getting it on, distant lover

Some great songs and vibe here

Can someone help me out here, I’m not sure what he is singing about. And is that lady going to be ok?

In many ways, this is the perfect follow up to What's Going On. It is like Marvin was out tackling the social issues all day and now longs for intimacy and love. The music and vibe are great, but it is hard to know whether he is really looking for, talking about, and pursing true love or just release. And if It is latter, then both relationship and social justice are marginalized. It sounds good either way, and that brings up other questions.

I loved the groovy and sensual energy of this record. However, songs are kind of repetitive, and none brings something truly unique and experimental.

I had "what's goin on" and "Let's get it on" back to back days. So much sexual energy, Im pretty sure im Gaye.

Classic

A sensual and atmospheric album, filled with desire and intimacy. Marvin Gaye hits the tone perfectly with his silky vocals and warm production, and the theme is delivered with great confidence. But for me, it becomes a bit too one-dimensional over time, the sexual focus dominates a little too much for the album to truly hold my attention all the way through. Solid craftsmanship, but not entirely my cup of tea throughout. 3/5

I was looking forward to this, but I left feeling a little disappointed. I think this album has a few too many love ballads. I prefer my RnB with some social commentary. Overall, there just aren’t as many earworms as there are in "What’s Going On", which is another album we've previously had on this list. I've never really liked “Let’s Get It On” (the song), as I find it a bit too cheesy. That said, a few of the other tracks stood out, “If I Should Die Tonight” and “Distant Lover” were both quite nice. A solid 3 stars.

Easy enough to listen to, but didn't really grab me.

Feels like an hour of for-play. Mostly okay though.

Mellow, smooth, feeling good

And yall can’t even handle Sabrina Carpenter’s new album cover.

Already know this one

Not my favorite Marvin Gaye

Let’s get it on is obviously an iconic song, but keep gettin it on is a silly reprise only a few songs later in an 8 song album. Come get to this is on the MLB the show 25 soundtrack which is a cool shoutout and a good song. Overall a good album that feels aged

Awesome melodies, great production, slightly monotonous.

I'm gonna at least enjoy this. Let's Get it On isn't my favourite Marvin Gaye song it's kinda Too Much but it's obviously objectively good. Lovely and buttery obv ..is it a little samey? Am I blaspheming. Oh there's straight up a reprise in the middle here. Fairs. I might prefer this to the main track actually maybe? Is that am i talking daft. Come Get to This is great my favourite so far. I want to love this and like individually these are great songs but as an album it gets a bit too sexy schmaltzy very quickly. I think he knew this tho hence the 31 minutes. A reasonable bar. Like i didn't actually get bored and stop listening. Idk man. I'll round up.

let's get it on- omg. I'm embarrassed it took me this long to recognize this song. 5 please don't stay- 5 if I should die tonight- 5 keep getting it on- 5 come get to this- 5 distant lover- 5 you sure love to ball- 5 just to keep you satisfied- 5

Huge talent, no question, but it really demands a specific mood, and I wasn’t in it while working on my greenhouse. I liked What’s Going On better overall.

I heard this album before. Its great for people who love this.

This album got me to strip down to my underwear. I don't know whether that's a good thing or a bad thing. Do what you want with it.

I think he might want to get it on

Marvin‘s vocals are beyond compare, but times I think this album feels a little bit overproduced with a little too much orchestration.

How many babies been made to this jam

Ooh, nah. Not my thing in the latter half

So great! I'm even still a little mopey about romance after getting out a 10-year long relationship, and this was still lovely to listen to. Very close to four stars.

Early on a Monday morning is probably not the right time to appreciate this one. Unfortunately, that's when I listened to it. Standout track: Please Don't Stay (Once You Go Away)

I'm giving this 3 stars but in fairness to the album I feel I should acknowledge that I didn't make any effort to try to listen to it in the way it was intended to be heard (during intercourse).

Pretty good

He’s back. I realized I’ve never listened past the first minute of let’s get it on before. Don’t think I need more than that. I liked please don’t stay more. Whole album is just more horny jams from Mr Gaye. I don’t know that the list needs both of these albums but this one is better I think? Idk, horniest man alive, beautiful instrumentation, livin round a 3 for me.

Marvin Gaye really was the king of the 70s R&B-Soul Fuck Jam. Some real classic fuck jams on here, which I probably would have been well served listening to while getting down fuck nasty. Unfortunately, I listened to them while playing War Thunder instead, so kinda lost some magic there. Clearly an incredible singer, but I got the gist pretty early.

Sexy time! Sexy baby boomer music that has been used to sell me soap for the last 30 years. Almost impossible to hear this now and have it not sound like a parody. Some real lead actress singing into a spoon in the kitchen music now. It’s unfortunate.

I will probably go to music Hill for saying this, but this album was simply OK to my ears😭

Can't deny it is a classic. Not quite my personal style, but its basically flawless

———————Sexy Shit——————————

Marvin knew how to get it on. Smoooooooth

Great soulful album. I’m ready to make love.

The lyrics of the second track don't seem to match the title at all - was that intentional? Anyway, aside from the opener I wasn't familiar with any of these songs. I am sure What's Goin' On will be in this list at some point, and I like that album better than this one.

I think I am supposed to like this a lot

the most sexual album i think ive ever heard in my life. i feel as though if i heard this when it was released, i would have it on everytime i had sex. however i feel it’s just corny now.

Too romantic for a Monday afternoon at work.

I mean, who doesn't love Marvin Gaye's voice? This is a wee bit syrupy for my taste but still... daayumn

What’s going on maybe better option

It’s jazzy!

As a soul fan I was hoping for more out of this .. but truly, you're only here for the single.

Let’s Get It On is a classic and while I liked the sound/vibes of the other songs, none of them really stood out to me. 3.5 Stars

I prefer Curtis

Slow smooth jazz. Not going to listen to this on an everyday basis. 3/5

6.5/10 I know this is a landmark album, but I found it a little boring. A couple of absolute standout tracks and a whole bunch of syrupy soul Best: Let's Get It On

Just okay, a bit samey throughout

Great title track. Album feels a little samey, but a good listen.

general: i rly like his voice, its v smooth i'm biased towards soul, r&b etc but i just couldn't take some of these lyrics srsly top 3: come get to this please stay distant lover

No foreplay, right to the good stuff.

Some iconic songs, smooth, but nothing that I truly loved, 3/5

I like the al green rougher take on sexy soul (memphis shit), but this is good. Well produced well sung, unified in theme.

Kinda good, not near perfect.

pretty underwhelming for one of the best voices ever

Definitely lost my attention a bit in the middle. Obviously some all timer horny music but does feel like a somewhat slight collection after What's Going On. "Just to Keep You Satisfied" is spectacular though damn.

Liked it especially first half. Standout songs: Lets get it on If I should die tonight You sure love to ball

What’s Going On is one of the greatest albums of all time, with searing social commentary about racism, corruption and the state of the planet, so it seems a little bit of a step back for the follow up to be a short album about (and let’s be blunt here) making sweet, sweet love. I mean, it’s not subtle - the opening track gets straight to the point and immediately proposes getting it on. At least let me take my coat off first Marvin, and a bottle of wine and some flowers might be nice too. It seems that the object of Marvin’s lust might have felt the same as he has to beg them to stay on the next track. However, the rest of the album quickly returns to the hot and steamy stuff with the erm, climax, being the tracks ‘You Sure Love to Ball’ and ‘Just to Keep You Satisfied’. Well, quite. However, if you are looking for an album to inspire some sexytimes and the object of your affections is similarly broad minded and in the mood, then this might a good choice.

Yet another "smooth" album. I'd rather prefer when he has something to say.

Great opening track, rest is "just" Marvin Gaye to me, which is more than OK!

custom_rating: 6

This seemed long for a 32-minute album. And, despite the great title track, I can't give a fourth star to any album with a song entitled "You Sure Love to Ball."

Impressive start to the album, but gets a bit repetitive toward the end.

Not his best, in my opinion. Boring at times

This is the first of three Marvin Gaye albums in this collection, and what a classic. I've never listened much to his music aside from the radio (and movie) classics, so it's nice to hear nearly an entire album's worth of less-familiar tracks. And since this was apparently his sex album (as opposed to his politics album "What's Going On?", which I'm looking forward to listening to), it's got a heaping serving of smooth Gaye to make the medicine go down. Aside from the familiar title track, I also enjoyed its sequel, "Keep gettin' it on", as well as the aptly titled "You sure love to ball". I can see why this helped make him into a sex icon, but I'm not sure why the Wikipedia entry claims this was his first foray into funk, as it's not very apparent across the album (to me at least). And while the album undoubtedly was quite suggestive for its time, it's kind of funny to read that a reviewer felt that this was "one of the most erotic recordings known to mankind." But big kudos to Marvin Gaye for the T.S. Eliot reference to "birth and death and copulation" on the gatefold sleeve!

Can't take the first track seriously, rest of the album is solid and classic marvin gaye. More focused on his vocals and perhaps less unique than some of his other albums but still solid. 3.5

Kinda eats tbh. The amount of horn is crazy tho. It's not entirely for me.

I mean... It's very sexually-minded. An album to make love to your lady/gentleman by. But this album has been so influential (and thus deserving of its place on this list) that it's really become the blueprint of a trope that's been hard to take seriously since Flight Of The Conchords' "Business Time".

Marvin Gaye is soul personified, what a voice. It's silky smooth. The actual album itself starts off strong with 'Let's Get It On' which is an absolute classic. It's brilliantly sung, catchy, soulful and Marvin doesn't sound like he's just jamming and riffing over the music like in other tracks. For example 'Keep Gettin' It On' acts as a sequel to the opener. It's essentially a reprise. Musically the same song with changed lyrics that sound loose and free. It's almost a waste of a track in all honesty. The first half is much better than the second. 'If I Should Die Tonight' is the best track other than the opener. Marvin really shows off his vocal prowess here. Overall it does get a little samey, but thankfully it's only just over half an hour long. I'll give it a generous three stars, two for the music and an extra one for Marvin Gaye's voice.

pleasant but not my style

"Please Let's Have Sex - The Song" is funny, because in the first minute he says he won't push, but the song goes on begging for another 4 minutes. At least the music is comfy, even if the lyrics aren't.

A bit boring but some solid tunes.

Boomer sex playlist

не мое, сонливость накатила

Instant feel-good vibes with the first track, then it gets a bit bland

Much like the Al Green album, objectively nice to listen to. But I probably won't.

War ganz in Ordnung. Die Songs flossen aber ziemlich in einander.

It's love making music, so pop a few Viagra and have a blast! If you're not otherwise occupied it can get a little boring but overall not bad.

3.5 —perfect baby making music but i don’t think I’d sit down and listen to this whole album outside of that scenario. It’s not bad but I went from a 4 to a 3.5 from ear fatigue

Fine! Grew on me.

An album that exists in multiple levels. It’s obviously horny as hell, but there is the layer of Gaye coming to terms with his own childhood abuse and trying to heal. There’s a lot here, but for me it still got caught up in the funk soul cliches of the 70s. Those musical things don’t resonate with me, and make it hard for me to fully connect with an album like this.

Some great tracks but a bit boring compared to his other albums

Such sexy! Waoh! Amaze! I can not handle the sexy.

7/10. Gorgeous voice and instrumentals

Smoooooth sounds

I mean, this might win sexiest album ever? Smooth as a smooth thing and definitely a mood setter!

I respect this horny album, but it's not really my thing.

Sabrina Carpenter levels of horny

Marvin Gaye was shot by his father with a gun Gaye had bought him for Christmas the year before and I cannot stop thinking about it. Cool album!

6/10 Talent on display, but nothing for me...and that's fine 1-29-2025

i recognize the beginning of let's get it on, and now i know where it's from so this is soul nothing crazy but nothing to dislike. pleasant listening experience An interesting switch up in album length after some 60-90min long albums best tunes: if i should die tonight, distant lover, you sure love to ball

Having heard one Marvin Gaye album already that I didn't like that much I was more pleasantly surprised by this one. This one is more like what I'd expect Marvin Gaye to be based on what I've heard about him Standouts Let's Get It On 3/5
