First point is that half of tracks are "greyed"out on spotify so can't be heard. What's left is tight and funky. It also has that lovely dry production that you yearn for. The Temptations go into a funky-psychedelic phase with this album ...lots of intermittent effects laden guitar. Solid 3.5
A true classic
great to hear some of the origins of psychedelic soul
First three tracks are really great examples of early funk, very fun to listen to, they've got a great groove. The rest are standard soul for the time, nothing super groundbreaking, but a good album nonetheless. 3.5 👍
A bit annoying only half the album is on Spotify, so I used Youtube. I have never heard more than the few super iconic songs of this group, and this isn't a genre I typically listen to so I was quite excited to give this album a go! 1. Cloud Nine - Quite funky, I liked it a lot. 8/10 2. I Heard It Through The Grapevine - Nice song. Google says it is a cover, but it's a good one. 7/10 3. Runaway Child, Running Wild - Really liked this one, intense theme. 8/10 4. Love is A Hurtin' Thing - A lot calmer. 8/10 5. Hey Girl - Very sedate compared to the other songs so far. I quite liked the more relaxed tune. 7/10 6. Why Did She Have To Leave Me (Why Did She Have To Go) - Lovely vocals. 8/10 7. I Need Your Lovin' - More of the same, not as good. 6/10 8. Don't Let Him Take Your Love From Me - I liked this one, I really liked the drums and horns. 7/10 9. I Gotta Find A Way (To Get You Back) - The repetitiveness of this album is getting to me. It's still a good song but dampened by everything that's come before it in the album. 7/10 10. Gonna Keep On Tryin' Till I Win Your Love - I liked the tune, it's a rather sweet song. I really like the instrumental at 2:15. 7/10 Objectively excellent music, but not my style - didn't save anything and doubt I will ever listen again, but I can appreciate it for what it is. Rather repetitive at times, but a good album. 3/5 is my initial thought

Ils abusent un peu du 5-6-1-6-1 comme lick sur tout, partout mais ça marche bien Le début de l'album est plutôt bon, motown psyché sur les bords mais vers la fin c'est plus générique. Les drums sonnent thin je trouve comparé à la bass qui tone sans bon sens Sympa malgré tout même si la fin fade out d'une toune ordinaire fait que la fin de l'album est assez pouet pouet

À la base, je ne suis pas un grand fan du groupe, mais je comprends pourquoi cet album est sur la liste vu le changement de direction par rapport à ce que le groupe faisait. Il y a certaines bonnes grooves, mais dans son ensemble c'est un peu long et ça ne me donne pas envie d'y revenir. La reprise de I Heard It Through The Grapevine n'est pas vraiment réussi pour moi.

I really like The Temptations, I absolutely love the '60s era classic Motown pop Temptations and I can fuck with the Sly Stone inspired '70s era Temptations (there's an album called Psychedelic Shack, what's not to love?!). I'm pretty surprised this album made the list though. It's not one I have listened to much before, it's a halfway house album really. It is still peppered with moments of '60s style soul (moments that are less good than what they had done before) and there are some very clear hints of the more experimental direction the band were heading in, but at this point the ideas still seem only half formed. Hopefully Temptin' Temptations and All Directions are on this list, they are albums that far better represent the two sides of The Temptations.

Another great discovery from this endeavour is that 1969 is most likely the greatest year in music to date. Perhaps common knowledge to some already. Fuck there was a lot of good music pumped out to see off the decade.

Psychedelic Temptations were not my thing. I feel like David Ruffin was also missed. The title track was pretty good, but beyond that nothing stood out.
I was, to put it mildly, very disappointed in this album, was expecting something else I guess and this...was not it. And that version of Grapevine, a tuna casserole of a song.
Had to get a free trial with Apple Music to listen to this. And very glad I did. Fascinating, almost 'concept' album bordering soul and psychadelia. Definitely caused me to re-evaluate The Temptations, and for the better
Some really superb vocals and vocal harmonies here. Yes, that's what they are known for, but it's justified. Reading the Wiki entry I learned this is the album when they departed from their original sound and started embracing psychedelic music. Good for them for their creative exploration. Not sure I'll come back to this one, but I appreciate what they were doing.

Standard 60's poppy soul music. No real standouts here as nearly every song sounds like the every other. Plus, this contains probably the worst version of Heard It Through the Grapevine I've ever heard. Altogether, this album is not terrible, but nothing special either. Thus, 3/5.

It was good, but I expected to enjoy it more based solely on the fact that in general I like the Temprations. Not convinced that this so called psychedelic soul suits them so well.
Cloud Nine is a standout track. I wish there were more tracks like it on the album. Runaway Child stands out too, but not in a good way - some of the production choices kinda irk me. The rest of the album is pleasant and all but it literally put me to sleep.

The album is good, I liked it a lot. The title track is a really awesome and Runaway Child, Running Wild really surprised me for how good it was, I loved the lyrics and instrumentation of these two songs. The rest of the album is also good, I liked the fact that a good amount of the songs in this record are about losing the woman you love.
Solid album great for background music while I prepare breakfast. If you are a fan of Mowtown R&B Funk it's a great album. Also, perfect length @ 35 min total it wasn't too short or too long.

Very solid album through and through but not a ton I would personally listen to over and over on my own playlist. Potentially closer to a 3.5 but earned a 4 for me on the strength of the whole album.

Nice, classic with a psychedelic twist. A little different and I usually like Motown and soul anyway.
A new era for The Temptations as they dive into the freethinking, freewheeling psychedelic era of the late Sixties. They tackle far more serious topics like abuse and estrangement from families, alongside the standard love songs that put them on the map. This album is not an overt embrace of psychedelia, though (that comes later) and it can prove frustrating after the first three songs, but the love songs are top notch as well. Good stuff all around. Favorites: Cloud Nine, Runaway Child, Running Wild, Hey Girl, I Need Your Lovin'.

I got very excited that Heard it through the grapevine was on here but turns out this is a different version. Cloud Nine was probably my favorite song of the bunch, none were terribly memorable but as a whole this was a fun album.

Slowly moving towards proper "psychadelic soul", but not there yet.
I really love The Temptations. Heard it through the grape is just a solid piece man. It's always been interesting to me, I grew up near a vineyard and we'd pick grapes and blue berries from to time. And It rings so true lol. You can't see anything through it, so you just kind of have to listen. Super makes sense once you've been in the situation. But nah it's this interesting mix of Funk meets motown and It just fucks man.
I've never heard any tracks off of this album. After I had, I realized that the Temptation are as great as I thought. This was an awesome listen.

This was a lot more funky than I was expecting. Still a few old school Temptations songs on it but mostly a different vibe than I'm used to with them. I hadn't heard most of these songs before but still really enjoyed the album.

Quick and to the point. Is it something I'd listen to regularly? No, but I still liked hearing more from The Temptations than just the hits I'm used to.
This album was fine. Some solid doo op sound then throw in a less than mediocre cover of Heard it Through the Grapevine. This album was also lacking in some of their all time hits which is a disappointment.

They are not breaking any ground, but they do not annoy in any way either. It is good sounding music but I just don’t see how this album showcases them as vocalists as the instrumentation is the highlight. Flat from beginning to end, no single moment better or worse than another.

This is pretty hard to argue with. I don't know that I walked away with anything that I can't live without, but Love is a Hurtin' Thing I thought was pretty great and everything on here is very tight.
Yeah, I dig this. The very definition of a three and a half star album for me. It's got a couple of points that are superior - and, in the case of the title track, one of my favourite soul numbers, period - but too much filler creeps in to give it that replay factor. But it's better than average, for sure.
Fine, but nothing here substantially jumped out to me save for the cover of "Grapevine." I liked that version and had never heard it before. Definitely beats the shit out of John Fogerty pronouncing "heard" as "hoid." My whole body shuddered just thinking about it.
Pleasantly surprised by this album. Sort of thought they were all my girl type music (not that thats bad, i just dont need a whole album of it). but this album was funky and cool

This little pitstop on the evolution of soul into funk through Motown is everything I needed. It's uplifting and melodic but also raw at times. The title track as an album opener is such a heavy hitter.

Unfortunately this one and the album surrounding it are both weaker than Papa Was A Rollin' Stone and All Directions respectively. That one got a 3, this one gets a 2.

This was fun. I know this album gets pegged as the Temps' big funk and psychedelic turn, but much of it is not. It's more that they took their signature sound and tweaked it slightly to go with the tone of what was on the charts at the time. It actually works pretty well. The more funk-driven tracks of side 1 are the real deal. The title track is a stone cold classic. I'm just realizing "Runaway Child" clocks in at 9+ minutes. It's pretty awesome as well, and kind of surprising coming from this group. Honestly the only side 1 song that left me a little cold was the cover of "Grapevine," which brought nothing new to the song. Dennis Edwards absolutely deserves credit here for making his mark as a vocalist in the wake of David Ruffin's departure. He was never going to top Ruffin, but he sounds great here, his grit balanced nicely by Eddie Kendricks’ splendid vocal. The album could have been a flat-out failure, and it's actually a really fun listen. I'm actually digging several of the more conventionally Temptations-y romantic songs. They're lovely, classic Motown songs, which are always a delight to hear. Fave Songs: Cloud Nine, Run Away Child Running Wild, I Gotta Find a Way (To Get You Back), Why Did She Have to Leave Me, Love is a Hurtin' Thing

3.7 - Fun and funky but I'm not getting the touted "watershed" in "psychedelic soul." "Runaway Child, Running Wild" is the closest to a mind-bending surrealist track, and I love the "momma momma" breakdown. Otherwise, to me it sounds like standard Motown.

So-so. Inoffensive, a little dull. The wikipedia entry for the album was more entertaining. (i.e. didn't know that Gladys Knight and the Pips were first on the slate with I Heard It Through the Grapevine. As for the performance shenanigans of the Dennis Edwards era...life is sometimes more scandalous that fiction.)
Side one is kinda revelatory...what if The Temptations worked together ... the song Cloud Nine might just be the result. Next is a great take on Heard it Through The Grapevine and the 9 minute closer is another funky, introspective freak out that packs a real punch. Love side one. Side two gets back to more familiar territory, silky smooth vocals, lush production with plenty of strings...syrupy sweet. This is a great album for someone who wants a taste of the classic Temptations sound and a glimpse into their experimental side. 4.25 stars

Psychedelic soul is a super interesting genre and something I have not explored with the Temptations. There are experiments that don’t quite work, like a cover of ‘I heard it Through the Grapevine’ but there are some really great sounds on this album. ‘Runaway Child, Running Wild’ is a standout for me and a great jam. Of course this is still a Temptations record and so we still get those lush harmonies for which the group is known

'Runaway child, running wild' is an interesting song. It centres around a headstrong kid that wants to run away but when he realises what the street is really like he's desperate to get home again but can't make it. The song closes with a haunting repeated plea of 'momma'. It reminded me of the Van Morrison song 'Beside you', where 'little jimmy' s gone' and Dylan's 'Visions of Johanna' where 'little boy lost, takes himself so seriously'. All three songs come from 1968, and the image of the lost child seems to be a common trope (based purely on these three songs but I could research the shit out of it if you push me). It was only a few years after the Moors murders but I doubt these had the required cultural impact in America as they did in England (though I'm sure there were equivalent travesties) but with increased forms of news media and means of communication along with increased urbanisation, perhaps there was more of a collective awareness / fear of the archetype of the lost child. Or perhaps the lost child was just the most aappropriate symbol for the turmoil of the social and political context of 1968 (assassinations of Marton Luther King, Robert Kennedy, Vietnam protests etc.) I always thought the temptations were a bit throwaway and by the book but there are some delicious numbers on this album.

The spin worked, earning 1 of the 2 hit singles a Grammy, and confirming that this is the change the group would stick with for the future. Yes, I've heard of the Temptations but I couldn't list any of their records off of the top of my head. Yes, I've heard "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", but I haven't heard this version. Maybe I've never heard the Temptations' version of the song. I think all of the tracks on this album were new to me. This was a good album to listen to. "Cloud Nine" has a great intro, and was a great way to start the album. I'm sure there are tracks that deserve a second listen to get a full appreciation of the album. All songs were pretty decent but none that really stood out to me.
Starts out strong, really liked the first three songs (except for the crying child in Run Away Child, which was a bit off-putting. That song was too long, as well). The rest of the album is decent, but nothing really amazing.
Love that Motown beat. Unmistakable sound. Cloud 9 - This is way funkier than I associate with the Temptations - no big band sound. Just guitars and drums. There's an almost live sensibility to it - lead vocalist comes off the mic. I am guessing this was recorded live in studio and not produced and pieced together. I Heard it Through the Grapevine. Now, I associate this with Marvin Gaye or Gladys Knight. Was this a Temptation song first? Apparently this is a cover, but it's good. Run Away Child, Running Wild - Back to that funkier, rock sound of Cloud 9. This is a surprisingly fresh and rocking album. Not the way I think of The Temptations, and I like it. "I Want My Mama" scream is jolting and terrifying. Quite a message, and then the instrumental jam that follows is impressive! Love is a Hurtin' Thing - Much more produced with that backing horn section and strings. Soulful song though. I like it. Great album! Hey Girl - Another soulful song - simple lyrically, "Hey Girl, don't go away." It's more about mood. Probably the worst song on the album. Just meh. Why Did She Have to Leave Me - A better version of Hey Girl. More story, more vocals. Side A of this album is definitely the side to listen to. Side B is more derivative, but it's a great sound! I Need Your Lovin' - More don't leave me. I was wrong, and I'll fix it stuff. I think the well is drying up. Don't Let Him Take Your Love From Me - Interesting spin on the old familiar. The broken man who is being left is pleading with her to not let HIM take her from him. Crazy. Typical Temptations song. simple drum kit snare/closed cymbals with horns and a guitar. Decent rhythm, but this side of the album does get repetitive. I Gotta Find a Way to Get You Back - How many girls leave this guy and send him to a desperate plead to get her back. Got a little saxophone on this one though! I do like this song's vibe more than the others on this topic. Gonna Keep Tryin' Til I get Your Love - Bass line is super reminiscent of Sugar Pie Honey Bunch I can't Help Myself, which was a Four Tops song. Interesting.
28th July 2021 Listened on my phone in the morning and finished the morning after cos Spotify didn't have all the songs. Had to finish on YouTube which was annoying. Yeah they're pretty legendary and have some amazing tunes

La pochette laissait présager une véritable bouffée d'air soul au milieu de tous ces albums de rock générés par Robert. De la soul, oui, mais de la soul psychédélique, j'émets des réserves.
Grosse erreur de la part des Temptations, qui n'ont pas eu la présence d'esprit, a la sortie de leur album, de le rendre disponible sur les plateformes de streaming. Ceci plafonne par consequent directement leur note a 3/5. A l'heure du digital, il est tout bonnement scandaleux de ne proposer un album qu'exclusivement disponible sur Youtube. J'ai d'ailleurs alerté mon bon ami robtouillère de ce petit scandale, qui s'est empressé de le signaler directement à Robert Dimery, grâce à sa proximité extrême avec ce dernier. Des mesures devraient etre prises très bientôt, à bon entendeur.

The Temps breaking from their familiar Motown Sound to get funkier including a 9+ minute near-masterpiece in Runaway Child. With a little traditional late 60s soul style thrown in, this is a good Temptations album.

Definitely a more far out sound than I expected from The Temptations. Classic harmonies, one wild 9 minute track, and funky grooves throughout. Nothing super memorable but nothing outright bad either.

Don't think I've ever sat down and listened to a Temptations record before. Production sounds amazing, crisp and warm, it does the slightly disorienting 60s stereo thing where the drums are hard panned to one channel, so it's not a headphones record. Pretty ballsy putting a 9-minute track third, but it mostly worked here. Sounds like it's straddling the line between classic Motown and 70s soul - I preferred the Motown-style tracks. Really refreshing to hear another version of Grapevine that hasn't been played to death

Feel good album. Started very soulful and got heavy 50s-pop toward the end. Not a huge fan of their rendition of "Heard It Through The Grapevine". Otherwise, good stuff.

Heard about this band in one of the courses I'm taking. Surprisingly stylish even to the modern ear(which is practically me). Enjoyed the experience, especially the bass being prominent.
Super 70s production - very wide stereo sound, funky bass lines, crunchy guitar and rhodes riffs, soulful singing - lots of love jams. Good to throw on and just vibe. Favorite song: Love is a Hurtin' Thing

Great sound. Truly an album of its time.
An enjoyable listen but not much on here that will warrant a revisit. Opening track is wonderful, Runaway child is also fantastic but most of the rest is daily forgettable. Even their version of Grapevine is underwhelming
Depth and glorious sound. Could wish for less on unrequited love. The lyrics at times let down the talent of the vocals.
Some bops, some boring stuff. There are better albums out there.

I liked a lot of songs, but I wouldn't say that I loved any. They all had a very similar feel.
I understand it was significant to pop culture but I’m unimpressed. There’s so many more albums that are better than this. Both from the same era and genre. This seems less based on musicality than significance in pop culture. Kendricks has an annoying voice and I’ve just never been impressed with the temptations. That style is so bad. A lot of good qualities but used poorly.
Pretty nice. Classical soul infused with funk and jazz elements. I particularly liked Runaway Child.
The A side could be an easy 5, but the back half drags into good but generic motown that brings the record down a bit.
It was Ok. Not my thing. Just like the last two albums, it felt less like an album and more like a collection of songs. Please don't let the next one be a mediocre late 60's album.

What a back catalogue
Obviously, The Temptations Cloud Nine was groundbreaking at the time for its use of funk, but how does it hold up? To modern ears, the earnestness of the lyrics grates a little. Social consciousness is one thing, but these lyrics are pretty on the nose. But how about the music? The playing and arrangements of the first three tracks in the relatively new funk style are impeccable. They groove relentlessly. And sure enough, it's the Temps, so the vocals kick ass. After the initial blast of funk, the rest of the album reverts to the Temptations signature smooth soul. This is not necessarily a bad thing. There's a lot to be said for soulful and varied vocals, competent if conventional arrangements, and the solid songcraft and musicianship from the Motown stable. I've got to be honest. I prefer 70s soul to 60s soul, but Cloud Nine is one of the more solid efforts of the period. There is little of the outright filler, pointless covers of hit material, and outright pandering to crossover audiences that was all too common on Motown releases. I'll subtract half a point for some painful earnestness and out of subjective personal preference. 4 1/2 out of 5

Levy oli hankalasti löydettävissä (ei spotify/tidal, ei kirjastossa, mutta youtubesta löytyi soittolista). Vaivannäkö kuitenkin kannatti tällä kertaa, oli oikein sujuvaa 60-luvun rokkia. Varsinkin levyn alkupuoli oli tosi menevää, mutta loppua kohdin meno vähän laimeni.

This album is great, all around fantastic.
Old school funk from the old school Temptations. Lyrics in this sometimes seem to harken back to slavery, or at least that was what I was feeling. No doubt they were politically charged people in their day.
Pleasant to listen to - 3.5
Didn't hit me as hard as the prior offering by the Temptations, though I think the album version I pulled up may not have been the best mastering, the sound seemed a little muddy. Still great.
Psychedelic Temps!
I like the kind of psychedelic instrumental arrangements. I think the vocals sometimes keep it from being a real favorite for me, but every other part is really good.

I absolutely love this album. It's got a lot of funk to it, and it has a great groove. The instrumental choices were very nice and characteristic of the era, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The funky version of the Temptation works for me. There were times when I thought the mix could have been a bit better. Sometimes the falsetto stands out a bit too much from the rest of the arrangement. The songs, though, are top notch 4/5
Happy music...very funky. I love their song „Papa was a rollin‘ stone“. But generally not my type of music.

The Temptations are a weird group. They were early pioneers in funk but they came out of the motown scene. Most bands who straddle the genre line like this produce songs that sort of smear the line between. Not The Temptations. Oh, no. The songs on this album are very solidly either funk or motown. I love the funk tracks so much. They hit the pocket and just grind. They're great. The motown tracks no so much. They're great examples of motown soul ... I just don't dig the genre.

Spotify only had 3 of the songs on this available, thankfully i've heard most of it before over the years anyway. Another example of an album that I don't mind at all going for 35min, while Kanye West and Arcade Fire albums go for over an hour. 3/5.
