Reviews (page 12 of 12)

Not really my thing. Not horrible though.

S'ok, but not really my thing

Nothing great

Kind of went in one ear and out the other

Quite unremarkable, no really standout tracks. Forgotten almost all of them instantly. It's groovey and consistent, but lack any tight hooks. Best song: Cloud Nine Worst song: Love Is a Hurtin' Thing Cover check: Trippy and cool, fits the vibe very well

Not for me

not a genre of music I personally enjoy. I can see how it is an influential album, but there were no songs that stood out to me.

If stuff like this comes up I enjoy it at the time, then I instantly forget about it. It's very good for what it is, but just not my everyday listen.

Boring

There’s no doubt some fantastic Motown songs but scattered across several artists. This album was a bit of a departure from the usual sound and sometimes benefitted from that. Would I listen again , perhaps after lots of others first

Kinda agree with the haters from back in 68 on this one. Found it pretty boring with not many memorable melodies. Especially considering the previous temptations album we had.

Listened to a few songs, but the genre is not really for me.

It’s a really good album, but unfortunately the lead singer’s voice is a bit grating to my ears. I am sure I am alone in that opinion, but still.

2.5 Idk it’s the Temptations. It’s fine, but kinda in one ear and out the other. Didn’t hit me deeply at all.

First listen. Interesting in that it is the transitional album between the old Temptations sound and the psychedelic new Temptations sound. It has elements of both. However, the new sound songs don't do it for me. I'm sure my dad has this album.

Started off well, enjoyed the title track. 'Grapevine' not a patch on Marvin Gaye's version. Thereafter petered out into generic cheesy soul. Didn't do much for me.

Heard a different album from them before (also from the generator). It's a charming album but ultimately nothing special 2/5

Didn’t hit for me

Good listen again but will not go back to it

Not my cup of tea

It's kinda alright, didn't blow my mind nor did I find it particularly interesting. I feel like most of the songs featured in the album may have far better covers of them made by other bands or artist.

- Jazz-rock-soul? - Litt kjedelig og formløst. - Flinke vokalister. God harmonisering. - Love is a Hurting Thing og Hey Girl var bra, men litt kjedelige.

Gotta be in the mood.

Good start to an album but it trailed off. Clearly can hear how their influence permeated funk and then got into other genres in the 80s and 90s

Started great and they’re amazing vocally but outside of 3 songs it becomes essentially the same song over and over again. It gets repetitive and mundane. Love Is A Hurtin’ Thing Cloud Nine Runaway Child, Running Wild I Need Your Lovin’ Gonna Keep On Trying’ Why’d she have to Leave Don’t let him take your love from me Hey Girl Gotta Find A Way Heard it through the grapevine(it’s honestly the third or 4th best version)

Not quite a Motown record, not quite a funk record, and not quite a soul record. Not quite obvious why it's on the list.

What a weird inclusion. It doesn’t feel ambitious enough for it to be the factor and the arrangements are rarely more than fine. Feels a lot longer than what it actually is.

It was good

Some interesting tracks, side one in particular but a lot of standard soul ballads, whist a minor step into psychedelic soul the balance of the album sounds pretty run of the mill.

This was fine, but felt really dated too.

The Temptations is a group I primarily know through their hits. I expect this to be full of love songs exploring different aspects of it and what it does to people. There's probably going to be some consistently squeaky clean performances with great harmonies, though lacking in any edge or grit what so ever. I expect to enjoy it on a surface level, but it will probably not have much staying power. Could still be surprising. Cloud Nine I like the bassline. Starting off with a song about their journey from their humble roots to a successful time in their life seems a solid way to open it. Unsure about the mixing. Great delivery on the vocals by everyone involved. Nothing in the song really sticks out too much though. Fine. 3/5 Heard it through the Grapevine Iconic song, probably not the most famous version of it however as many artists have their own cover of it. I kinda hate the mixing on this. Boring instrumentally. While the performances are good it feels a bit formulaic. Average. 2.5/5 Runaway Child, Running Wild It's sad when I really can't focus on the song because of my distaste for how it's mixed. Seems a common problem with the album. I feel the storytelling is sufficiently vivid, with decent worldbuilding. The backing vocals is really the highlight for me. I think the song has a lot of potential, but is let down by a boring instrumental and dated production. Might work for some people, did not work for me. Really wanted it to be over by the end. 1.5/5 Love is a Hurtin' Thing Succeeds at being a soul song. Their voices are nice, the chorus is sufficiently powerful. A bit rough recording wise, showing its age. Doesn't really do much else worthy of mentioning. Average. 2.5/5 Hey Girl Predictable lyrics. Don't want to repeat myself so I won't. Basic song with a premise seen time and time again. Lead singer does a great job on the chrous. Not great. 2/5 Why Did She Have To Leave Me (Why Did She Have To Go) I like the backing vocals. Limited and basic. Not exactly challenging. Probaly fine as background music, but not much else. Average. 2.5/5 I Need Your Lovin' I think the bassline is pretty good. Impressive voice. Predictable and bland. 2/5 Don't Let Him Take Her Love From Me There's a nice guitar sequence at the start. The vocal melody for the chorus is decent, the horns echoing it also works well. Average. 2.5/5 I Gotta Find a Way (To Get You Back) I guess there's a decently dancable rhythm there somewhere in here. Sax sounds muted and awful. There's a lot of effort put into the lead vocals. Sounds like they had fun. Fine. 3/5 Gonna Keep Tryin' Till I Win Your Love I'm having some fun with the bassline. I can't stand the sharp trumpet. Nothing stands out. Just bland and edgeless, coasting along on a formula that has been present the entire album. 2/5 Did not expect to be as bored as I was by this album. Genuinely felt 3x longer than it was. So safe, so formulaic, blander than white bread. Yes there are some soulful performances, yes there is chemistry within the group, and yes they play their parts competently. Is that enough to make something that holds up today? Not for me unfortunately. I do understand that for the time the production was probably fine, and that there was difficulties for black artist to get access to the funds and equipment needed, but to my modern ears it just doesn't sound good. It really does not help that most of the songs are different varations on the same theme. Would not revisit, but open to hear a different project from them as they are obviously talented. Fave track. I Gotta Find a Way (To Get You Back) Least fave track. Runaway Child, Running Wild

Not for me. Not into funk.

I have discovered a new genre I do not like, which is this psychedelic/funk/soul combo. It doesn't surprise me that this is influenced by Slh and the Family Stone, which is another album I didn't particularly enjoy. I can hear that it's good music, it just isn't music for me.

It's a fine soul album. I wouldn't consider it a classic and won't hurry to put it back on the stereo. I don't think it's one of their best. The first song listed on the album cover is I Heard It Through the Grapevine and I was hopeful to hear something that I hadn't before, but compared to Marvin or Gladys (whose versions both preceded this one) I don't know why they bothered.

Like most people, my only knowledge of the Temptations was My Girl. I was excited to take a listen to this, but it was just... forgettable. I'd give it a 3 if it weren't for the whining in "Runaway Child, Runaway Wild". That was grating and awful and I just had no interest in it.

This feels like a "I guess you had to be there" albums. Maybe in 1969, this would've been awesome. I'm just not feeling it now.

Old school rnb jams but not my favorite album

The Good: Cloud 9 The Bad: Try figure out where the hell to find Cloud 9 The Ugly: Realizing that Clouds 1 through 8 are the same…. and yet not… This is the first time I am finding it difficult to write anything about an album… not that it is bad, but it certainly isn’t great, in my most humble of opinions. For me, The Temptations or R&B RoyalTY (yup, capital R, T and Y), so this funked out version just isn’t my thing. I get what the producer was after, and I understand how important it is to have raison d’etre, but come on… it’s The Who would just go Pop on you, or Motorhead switching to R&B rap because that is what De La Soul is doing… So, you can guess this album ain’t getting no 5* from me… they should feel happy with the 2* am about to dish out…

I had to stop listening after the attempt at Heard it through the Grapevine. I then flipped to Marvin Gaye.

It's fine. The funk songs are fun, but the soul ones don't do much for me. The overall album feels uneven.

I do enjoy some Motown jams but I’m just not a fan of The Temptations’ psychedelic era.

This album struggled to hold my attention, unfortunately so gets a low rating from me. I think this is the original I Heard It Through The Grapevine and it doesn’t have the catchiness of the cover versions. Rating: 2

I was hoping for the psychedelic funk to be more psychedelic and more funky

Just really boring. The Temptations had been better in the past and they would be better in the future. They find themselves in a creative lull, producing one of the soulless covers of “I Heard It From The Grapevine” in existence. I don’t recall hearing any of these songs on the oldies station when I was a kid and there’s probably a good reason for that. 2.3/5

typ ganska generiskt, va dock lite upprörd när ja lyssnade B)

doesnt do anything all that special. has a lot of duds but some highs.

I did not use a private spotify session for this one. I never got into this, I tried. Not for me. I did appreciate the wide range of voices.

Not a great fan of this genre of music but at least this albm has some interesting arrangements sometimes. Generally ift is just the same old collection of love-oriented rambles; I wish they would get rid of the high voice and have more of the bass one. Does not inspire and very much a product of its era.

nice and short and easy to listen to, but nothing is making me want to come back to this in the future

Pretty unremarkable and ultimately disappointing. I didn't like their version of Heard It Through The Grapevine at all. I wouldn't want to listen to this again so a 3 would be too generous. There's got to be a better Temptations album out there. 2.5/5

Not really my type of music, but I can see the appeal and why The Temptations were so popular. FAVORITE SONG: Cloud Nine

Found this kinda boring tbf

Matige muziek, goede muzikanten.

Cloud Nine feels like a more reigned-in or pop version of Funkadelic or Parliament. I think this probably helped the Temptations widespread appeal, but many of the songs feel a little lacking in personality. Best Songs: Cloud Nine, Runaway Child..., Worst Songs: I Gotta Find A Way..., Gonna Keep On Tryin'

This kinda sucks ngl. A lot of the harmonies are quite naff, and I don't really find their take on R&B that exciting at all. Best Track: I Gotta Find A Way (To Get You Back) Worst Track: I Heard it Through the Grapevine

Maybe in a different environment under different circumstances, I could have liked this, but I really did not like it at all.

There must be better temptations albums out there.

Fine I think? I forgot so probably nothing special.

Not bad, first song was cool but I gotta say the rest of the album just went one ear and out the other. Well except for that Gravepine cover which was really lame.

2- Stars (4/15)

This is nice. I like the classic Motown production. But it didn't really move me.

The only temptation I had was to skip every track.

I'm not crazy about this era of the Temptations.

cute!!

Good background music. No songs stood out though. Would listen to it again but probably won't seek it out.

<shrug>

Me and the boys floating through the Meat Dimension. It's alright? Slightly above having to listen to my thoughts, I guess?

Not my jam. Very well done by talented artists, but I just can't handle screamy vocals of any genre.

I wasn't tempted

Get's my foot tapping but I think there's better soul/mo-town than this

Hittir ekki alveg í mark.

Really not a single exciting thing about this album. Dull.

i saw i need your lovin' on the tracklist for this and had the four tops song stuck in my head the whole time, smh. I listened to this yesterday and already can't remember a damn thing about it.

I was excited for this but then it didn't really grab me the way I expected.

i do NOT fw the 10 minute song where a child starts crying for his mum. That was triggering - boring

I'm glad I heard this album. Has some songs I have never heard before, some of them even funky. But the second part of the record was a bit boring for me.

Me aburrió. No me gustó la voz líder

Like the soul parts more than the more R&B focused parts. Totally fine, nothing I'll come back to

This is probably great for its genre, but I felt like I was listening to one big advert for couches, or a car, or something that can only be sold by the upbeat sound of Motown.

riddim

STANDOUTS: n/a OVERALL: 2/5—somewhat okay soul...but I won't return to this. None of their big songs are on this.

It was OK, but I didn’t really enjoy a load of songs about cheating/unavailable women. If there’d been a variation musically/thematically between them it might have been better, but was very samey to my ear.

Not my fav

This album didn’t do it for me. They’re talented musicians but it just didn’t connect for me. I can’t put my finger on what exactly doesn’t click. I like funk and I like Motown, I guess I just don’t like the temptation’s take on funk/motown.

I normally love Motown (and the Temptations.) This has to be the weakest album of theirs I've ever heard.

Not great, like Papa Was a Rolling Stone, only they got distracted while writing the lyrics.

Fun starts, dropped off

I don’t know a lot of these songs. Before my time really.

Not as good as I expected. I know I’ve heard better temptations songs.

This was alright but it all kind of ran together. Interesting version of Heard it through the Grapevine

It's more flat than funky

I thought I liked The Temptations. Now I'm thinking maybe I don't. Or at least I don't like this album. Also...why does every album on this list so far have at least one unnecessarily long song? Kinda driving me nuts. 2/5

This didn't make any sort of impression on me, frankly. Bad cover of 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine' and not much else.

Chill background music So much so I've forgotten what any of it sounded like

More soul, personally I’m not huge into it, feels about the time which is great, wouldn’t throw it on personally. 2.4

listened 2x. 1.8/5

Not much to say, man. Wasn’t impressed dude. Extra star because I’m having. A great morning with my baby

Runaway child was good. I didnt love anything else

WTH were they thinking with Runaway Child, Running Wild? I can't even put into words how I feel about having a crying child wailing for their mother embedded in a song. I had to immediately skip to the next song. Jesus. Immediate down vote for that. Fuck.

Ein wenig psychedelischer Motown.

That’s another one listened from the legendary Mr Young

2 star. Hits and misses.

just not my kind of music, not bad tho

All blended into one. There wasn't really a single standout track

Starts strong, then every track melds into one, pretty forgettable stuff.

Nothing special

I was excited when I saw the album, but it just didn’t connect. Very dated.

Not my favorite genre. They have good songs though. Didn’t love.

I would have never listened to this if it wasn’t for this project. Pleasantly surprised. Top 3 were Cloud Nine, Love is a Hurtin’ Thing, and Hey Girl. Album cover looks like the guys are standing on a giant steak.

Maybe it's just because it was Friday but I felt myself grooving along to this album at times, then the random "I want my momma"s started and threw me off.

When this album was released I would have avoided it like the plague. Did not like the Motown, soul, funk sound at all. But you could not avoid it as it was played almost exclusively in clubs and across the radio at the time. So indirectly it became part of the soundtrack of my life from that particular time. Listening to this album there are moments where the music takes me back to my youth. Music should evoke memories so in that respect this album in parts fulfills that purpose but now older I can begin to appreciate the musical value of this type of music. Still don’t like it personally but the millions who do cannot be wrong I suppose.

Very Motown, harmonizing and formulaic in the structure. Even songs that aren't happy have a cheery, harmonizing sound, which is such a strange disconnect.

not one of their better ones

Not bad, just not my thing.

I liked the back half a fair amount. I was not a fan of the funk sound of the first half though. And even the back half didn't reach the standards of great motown. Kind of a bummer really.

Won’t be coming back to it

This was fine, but not my jam.

R&B; soul; funk; progressive soul; psychedelic soul Temptations became the definitive vocal group of the 1960s. One of Motowns most elastic acts. Motown: recording company founded by Berry Gordy, Jr., in Detroit, Michigan, U.S., in January 1959 that became one of the most successful Black-owned businesses and one of the most influential independent record companies in American history. The company gave its name to the hugely popular style of soul music that it created. Notes: To me it all sounds similar. It can be vibey and I liked the messages and relatability. Has a very classic sound. The album itself isn't something I'll listen to but I will check out more songs from the Temptations.

this album honestly was boring. i personally didn’t like this. the second half of the album had some groove to it but other than that there was one 9 minute long song and every other song was short and didn’t stick out

Very same-y sounding to me

A quintet of voices with a smooth style that aged like fine wine

When the setting is right, say in a Tarantino movie, I can appreciate some soul music. I don’t go out of my way to actively listen to some, though. However, this album I did not like. Sure, the vocals and a lot of the instrumentation is really good. Also, I like the vibe of the music. What I didn’t like at all, were the songs. There was not one single memorable song on this album. Not one song I remember after listening to it. I didn’t even notice that the album had started over

This didn't do much for me. Thought the temptations had a few songs I would recognise, none were here though . I didn't hate it, but never choosing to listen to it

Average

Good for music whilst doing other chores, some standout songs but I wouldn’t sit through all of them if I was listening to music as my main activity.

Allright

Flat one.

Not my thing.

Good background but hardly an album when they didn’t write it.

Ood, the production on this is a bit rough

Þetta var ekkert spes. Leið smá eins og ég væri í 70's löggumynd. Alveg hægt að vinna við þetta en kítlar mig ekki. Flottur söngur og hljóðfæraleikur samt sem áður.

Thought I'd like it more, didn't hear any standout songs

Its okay. Doesnt belong on the list.

Didn't like side one. Love is a Hurtin' Thing is pretty good.

Didn't do much for me.

to old for my taste

I thought I'd get into this, but it didn't really land for me.

Not terrible but nothing really jumps out at me. It’s like a funky barber shop quartet trying to do psychedelic music but doesn’t come off as cool as that description sounds.

Cloud Nine //

Not bad music by any means, just not my thing.

C'est moyen tout ça

The title track of this album is fantastic, but as much as I love the Temptations I wasn't very into the rest of the album.

ok .... expected better

Didn’t really do it for me. It’s not offensive but it is a bit samey and there isn’t a single track I’m desperate to listen to again. Classic sound, but no classic songs à la My Girl.

Of course it’s good but it doesn’t move me at all.

Didn’t like. I guess I’m used to other versions of the songs.

It was jazzy but again no vocals, so I was kind of bored listening to this, maybe if it were a bit more catchy, I would've enjoyed more. I do like jazz.

Not the very best of this band but interesting to hear a bunch of things I’ve heard sampled elsewhere.

Classic Motown sound. Wtf is runaway child... Is it their attempt at prog??? Not great overall

feels old, but certainly a foundation for future musicians.

Time: 35:09 Year: 1969 Funk

I listened to this twice and didn't find myself caring either time. Partly because I was focused on a really obnoxious problem, and partly because nothing was all that terribly interesting. While there is nothing "bad" here, its just not my cup of tea. If I were trying to be objective, I'd go with a 3/4 because musically, it is fine. But I am being objective so I say 2 because I was kind of bored.

First listen Saved 2/10 Top track: Cloud Nine

Didn't get into it. Bad day at work probably led to me not really giving it a chance.

It was fine, just didn't really get into it

boring

Groovy! I don't think I'd go back to this, it's a solid record but it's very same-y and you sort of don't know when songs end and next one's begin

Pretty groovy little album. Not one I'd reach out for in the future, but it was a pleasant time spent. Melodious. Great vocals throughout and some familiar and enjoyed tunes.

Hey, Girl. Hey. Did you know this album is underwhelming and bored? I think of 1969 as being an exciting time to be alive. Perhaps this boringness brought some stability to the chaos of the world and thus was rated higher. Regardless, it's really lost on me in 2023.

That was surprisingly underwhelming.

When I snapped out of my boredom trance, all I can remember is a bad cover of I Heard It Through The Grapevine and a bunch of songs boasting about how the singing dude is better than some woman’s boy toy.

I don’t always find it pleasant.

It was fine but I expected better.

Highlights: "I Gotta Find A Way," "Cloud Nine" It was a step backwards for The Temptations to try to compete over new sounds with James Brown, Sly Stone, and Isaac Hayes. We're a couple years out from 110th Street or Shaft, but you can hear in the lyrics that the psych and funk dabbling is bound up in the dawn of blaxploitation, which is a double-edged sword. The production is also much rougher than their past hits. The strained vocals get raw and awkward mixing, and the Motown style of direct input guitar signal does NOT work with Hendrix effects combos; it's like you can hear the upheaval in Motown Records as they scramble to recover from losing their lead writer and relocate to Los Angeles while maintaining their notoriously grueling production schedules. I can see why this might have been picked as a "progressive" record, but that change was developing without The Temptations. This is jumping the shark on all counts.

Particolare

Throughout the album, I felt like the Temptations were trying too hard to be someone else. 1969 was obviously was a momentous year of change musically, and the Temptations tried to change too. But songs like "Runaway Child, Running Wild" smacked of Stevie Wonder. Their... "update" of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" just fell flat. I don't want to say they had to stick with just what they know, but sometimes you stray too far and it gets... embarrassing. As soon as the album was done, Spotify started playing "you liked this, maybe you'll like..." and it did Otis Redding's "Sitting By The Dock of the Bay" and a whole bunch of soul classics. It just made you realize what the Temptations album was missing.

FAF Funky As Fuck Still thought it lacked that wow track. I get it, your flavour is funk but it doesn't hurt to add a flake or some sweet toppings to shake it up baby.

Not my cup of tea.

it was pretty meh, not good and not bad but slightly bad

Just like with their later funk record from the era, I consider most of the record to be forgettable. They're a singles band, producing pop hits with James Brown-esque forward vocals and scats. I appreciate the attempt at psychedelic instrumentation, especially during the instrumental section of "Runaway Child", but it's not that impressive. It's too fast and sharp to be very imaginative. This and "Cloud Nine" were decent funk attempts but felt rushed and were too rigid in its pop structure. The 2nd half consists of smoother soul tracks, utilizing some psychedelic instrumentation like wind chimes to spice things up, which accomplish what they sought to do, but nearly all of them are pretty forgettable. The production has nice mixing but sounds a bit poor, especially the vocalist. Favorites: Runaway Child, Hey Girl

none of their best songs are here 2.5

2.5 As mentioned in my All Directions review, I didn’t realize Temptations took on a funk sound later in their career, and this seems to be the album that marked that shift. Cloud Nine was a really solid opener and seemed to be a good selling point on the new musical direction, and that was further backed up by the fun funk breakdown on Runaway Child, Running Wild. Then, starting with Lovin is a Hurtin’ Thing, it seems like they just decided to take a hard shift back to their R&B/soul roots? I don’t know, it wasn’t bad, but I just kind of wish they had stuck to one sound, as the final product just seems awkwardly glued together, almost as if the funk stuff was an afterthought tacked on to the front of a work in progress album - like they weren’t entirely confident in their new sound and wanted a fallback. To add to the incoherency, Gonna Keep on Tryin’ was an incredibly unceremonious conclusion to the album, to the point I head to go back to Spotify and confirm the album actually ended where it was supposed to. Fine overall, though the back half is pretty unremarkable. The best part of the album definitely lies in the first three tracks.

Meh - didn’t do much for me

Ok album, just not really my kind of music.

Nothing special

Too much on the romance side to my taste. Sounds like a bunch of man trying to prove they are so virile. Gets boring the more you listen

This seemed like a couple of hits and a bunch of experimentation. Their earlier soulful stuff was so good.

Did nothing for me. I found it a bit bland.

I found a lot of the covers underwhelming, they really pale in comparison to the original/better known versions.

Loooove the sound but didn’t feel like the album had a journey, a bit one note?

15 years ago I would have loved this but I can’t relate to the heartbreak and loneliness anymore.

Pretty good

Cover art 3/5

Uh, I didn't love this. Mo-town meets weird psychedelic crap. I was hoping for some smooth harmonies, helping me relive that one amazing night on the Carnival Cruise when the on-board musical review was "Mo-Town on the Seas" or something like that. It wasn't that great, but it was catchy. Instead I got "Runaway Child, Running Wild". It's like a jam band without the jam. And what's with the screech in the middle of the song. No thanks. Trying to hard to be edgy. Echo - play Scarecrow by John Cougar (y'all know it's coming!)

Sounds nice and all, just not something I see myself listening to very often.

Classic motown - some moments when the high pitch is way too strident - should have been treated better in production. In general the production standard is lower than I would have expected which will cost it a point on my rating. (Side note - only 3 of 10 tracks available on Spotify in Brazil - switched to Youtube to get the full album)

A relatively plain soul album that's almost entirely love songs. Nothing I hated besides the crying child, just uninteresting.

Meh. The temptation trying to be funky? Runaway Child was atrocious.

no esta completo en ninguna plataforma felicidades

Heard it Through the Grapevine is obviously a great song but the rest if the album fell flat for me

Fine for what it is but nothing really stands out and I wouldn't wanna listen to it again

The raspy falsetto teetering on the edge of tones were hard for me to cotton to. I’d never heard that version of Heard It through the Grapevine! Credit to their prolific catalogue and their historical presence/impact, but this is not an album I’ll be spinning for the heck of it.

doesn't really get going. threatens to be good but is just a bit bland.

Psychedelic Temptations were not my thing. I feel like David Ruffin was also missed. The title track was pretty good, but beyond that nothing stood out.

Not my thing

This was just ok for me, nothing outstanding. 2

Was ok -not a fan

Cannot find on Spotify

Didn't like as much as I thought I would

Fine, but nothing here substantially jumped out to me save for the cover of "Grapevine." I liked that version and had never heard it before. Definitely beats the shit out of John Fogerty pronouncing "heard" as "hoid." My whole body shuddered just thinking about it.

First listen. Temptations are good. Just an old style that isn't that listenable today as it was before. Still a good album. 2/5

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Runaway Child, Running Wild Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Another Temptations album where, at least for me, the main draw is the 9+ minute epic. Unfortunately this one and the album surrounding it are both weaker than Papa Was A Rollin' Stone and All Directions respectively. That one got a 3, this one gets a 2.

Brave change of direction, but I admired it more than I enjoyed it.

This soul music album has a psychedelic spin to it - since it was released in 1969 - and is the ninth album from The Temptations. The spin worked, earning 1 of the 2 hit singles a Grammy, and confirming that this is the change the group would stick with for the future. Soul music isn't my genre of music, so that affected the rating.

Naw. Seemed disjointed. Give me neo-soul, not psychedelia-soul.

Hm... sounds oke, but... nah

Not really my thing, but recognize the importance.

Nice 60's funk vibe, but i feel it too old. Best song ,,Cloud Nine".

4/10 - GOOD VIBES

Pretty good album. Probably progressive for the time but not overly interesting with no memorable songs 2.5

Happy music...very funky. I love their song „Papa was a rollin‘ stone“. But generally not my type of music.

A couple songs I enjoyed, but overall not my thing. Much more into the KC sound than something like this.

hate the mama sound effect, would be a 2 otherwise

Una canción buena en todo el album. Aunque muy buena eso sí. Single material, like mi ex.

Shockingly awful

Meh meh meh wop

Funky wah wah sound….different from their rather formal early smooth love songs. Lovely voice. Fave track…Runaway Child. Enjoyed.

Maybe too much funk for me, sounded all the same

Not my style. Rating is purely personal, this does zero for me.

Not gonna listen

Tento album má nezaujal prakticky ničím. Mám rád iné ich pesničky.

No es mi estilo at all. Música de fondo

Derivative pop made worse by strings

- Another band with a history of abuse towards women (before this album?), but since it's a new singer here after they kicked the other guy out, I was thinking maybe this album should get a pass, but 1. They did try to bring the other guy back for a minute or two, and (more importantly) 2. The lyrics of the songs have a "hey little baby girl, I sucked, but I need you, so how about you don't leave this abusive relationship? No? I'll keep harassing you until you give in, even though you've moved on and are with someone else!" vibes. Dude, just leave her alone. Gross. - The lead singer has a nice gravelly voice. The other guy with the high voice is rough - so strained, thin, and out of tune. - The instrumentation has a pretty chill/laid back vibe with a nice groove/bass, especially. - Most of Side A bored me (the title track was definitely the highlight) -- the cover of I Heard It Through The Grapevine isn't even catchy, and no thanks to a forgettable song being almost 10 min long and including an "I want my mommy" thing, ugh? - Side B is more standard Motown, but it is still pretty boring and continues with the problematic lyrics throughout. I don't think I'll remember any of the songs, and I'm definitely not adding this album to my collection. - I was considering a 2 at first when I hadn't listened to the lyrics, but the coercive & infantilizing lyrics are a hard no.

Not my vibe

My ex liked this one. No thx

Classic, just not mine

I don't like this type of music it is good but not for me. 2/10

Worst. Album. Ever.

Good me movin', but I don't really like it at all Didnt even listen to all songs

Zeitdokument, aber nicht mein Genre!

Cloud Nine Runaway Child, Running Wild

Not for me

This was sooooooo boooooorrrrriiiinnnnggggg but an impressive number of times to write the same song

Not really my kind of music. Too jazzy

60’s don’t care

Nothing special, no disrespect to these gentlemen

I was expecting to like this more. Like, a lot more. I know The Temptations are iconic, but is just sounds like a group of really good solo singers who try to support each other when the others have a solo. What bothered me most at first was realizing there was some really bad mic technique in the studio. The singer pulls back from the microphone on the title track “Cloud Nine” to reveal the size of the untreated room. At first, I loved the vulnerability of it, but then I started realizing some of the background vocals were pretty poorly arranged as if the group were a mediocre a cappella group who didn’t know how to around parts. Some of the musicians on the track absolutely slap, but to me the good was overshadowed by lifeless lines of melody and soulless solos that sound like they are there just to have sound playing in the same key. This just isn’t it. I can’t believe I am rating Taylor Swift higher than this….

I didn't really enjoy this. Felt dated and overly long despite being a short album.

Love the vibe of the first song already. Very funky indeed. Like that there are different vocals. It was fine, I enjoyed it, just not my genre I guess. Second song has great background vocals. Also the main singer's voice is remarkable. Eddie has a listenable voice, but Dennis - genre-appropriate. Third song is 9 minutes? What do they have to say that much. Love the weird start. The deep voice guy should sing more. I love the chaos they create with their voices all together. I feel like the longness of the song is unnecessary, also the cry-singing was not good for my ears. 4th song is sad, was started by the deep voiced guy(not sure), continued with the soft voice one(worst). Album has a beach vibe, makes me relaxed and stuff, but not worth it overall(again not my genre so). 5th song has the same instrumentals in the background, I must say that I love that it's different from the modern bass beats. I haven't mentioned any meanings(i usually do), because there's not much to it, mostly about love, though First song might have been about drugs. 6th has exactly same vibe, Bob Marley vibe actually. Theme is love as I hear it. Nothing unique to me. 7th song and no deep voiced guy, not good. I'm bored, but these are not the songs I should be deep-dive listening to so it's expected, liking the vibe just, it's not it. 8th song has again great background vocals, best part in the song probably. 9th has am amazing start, going basic after. I do not like his voice, can't blame myself. 10th and last song, I have to say I like the way he says "woo". The trumpet is nice to hear also. It's permanent wave, no bridge, no different chorus, or beat change, just the same vibe, I get why people like this but I do not. Sadly this is my first 1 star album, vibe was okay, but too same, I low-key get why this album is here, it's just not here for me.

Not my jam

Felt too slow for my liking

No real bangers on this one, at least not that I'm aware of

Ihan silleen bulkkihyvää, mut miks just tämä albumi...

good but didn't take

I was, to put it mildly, very disappointed in this album, was expecting something else I guess and this...was not it. And that version of Grapevine, a tuna casserole of a song.

Not good as others

Loved the guitar in Cloud Nine. Loved this band growing up. They have better albums
