Reviews (page 7 of 12)

Beats do some heavy lifting. Another example of skits making 0 impact in anything but 7th grade lunch table humor.

I fear I did not listen to the album all the way through

first song... amazing

Hey, it's me, your friendly neighborhood not-a-hip-hop-guy. I have to give this album some credit because it's absolutely archetypal. If someone were to ask me to conjure up the idea of hip-hop in my brain, this is what it would sound like. This is Elvis, this is Hank Williams, this is Sgt. Pepper's. But when you boil it down, it's still not something I would reach for when I want to listen to music.

The production and beats put this album in the all time great category. For his debut solo album he went a created a whole new style, G-funk, that was revolutionary for future hip hop. I think the misogyny and violence of the gangsta rap genre is a bit dated, more of a fan of the laid back party tracks. The album is a bit too long, could have paired it down to 10 songs and cut the skits.

I assume this is an important Rap/hip hop album. I'll put my hand up that I'm an Australian, middle class, white boy, so this probably isn't supposed to resonate with me. Production is great. I read most of this is not samples. It's funky. Hence the G-funk tag. It's long, probably too long really. There's some bangers, but I reckon there is a fair amount of filler that wouldn't be missed. And the skits, slightly humorous once, why add them. It would be annoying hearing them time and time again if you played it a lot. 3 times and I was over them. Lyrical content, yeah, that hasn't dated real well, and that's a shame, as some of it is really good. I wouldn't play this to my kids though purely due to the lyrical content.

Not my style. But quality on him!

Cool to see the beginnings of the Bad Boy/Death Row beef with the Eazy E diss Sick song about the Rodney King Riots For being a producer album, it sure does use the same stuff a lot. BUT-what's worth noting is this is the beginning of the glorification of weed, money, and sex. Of course NWA existed before, but this was the popularization of it. From TPAB to Not Like Us if you will. Hip Hop is still carrying this stereotype, and it's not for it's benefit these themes began.

The beats and beat switches are immaculate

Me, listening to this album: Hell yeah, hell yeah, love this one too, oh shit my kids are in the car. This came out when I was 12, they’re 11 and 14, I only trust one to listen to this responsibly. Update: I made it through three songs and then felt terrible that my sons were hearing lyrics about women like these. I still like this album but I’m not playing it for the kids.

Takes me back to high school.

Okay, look. I understand that this album hasn't exactly aged gracefully, something anyone can gather after three seconds of listening (misogyny, homophobia, fuck Eazy-E, etc). But two things remain true: 1) This album PIONEERED hip hop and is one of the most influential albums of all time. I've heard many of these bars and beats throughout my life and it really does still have that classic boom bap sound (even if the lyrics are dated as hell). That saves this album to be 3.5 for me, rounding to 3. 2) This album pisses off Gen Xers and boomers beyond belief and it is the funniest fucking thing imaginable. Take 5 minutes and look at the negative reviews of this album. Just some of the saltiest, most racist shit present on this website. Multiple slurs (and stuff that could be interpreted as slurs). Equal parts funny and horrifying. It's not 1992 anymore, get a grip.

Although I'm not into hip-hop I somehow enjoyed this one. Weak three stars for his chronic. 2,5

I mean it's alright. I remember this album hitting harder when I was a kid. Maybe my tastes have changed, or maybe the album is just dated. The beats still bang, but the lyrics and lyrical performance feels lacking somehow.

So clearly this album has not aged well with its lyrical choices especially. There were big chunks where I kinda forgot it was a Dre album as there was so much Snoop on it. But having said that it was very significant to Hip Hop when it came out and you can see how much it influenced the music scene which was so important. I don’t think I would choose to listen to the full album again so I can’t score it highly but it was an interesting listen

This is a very interesting album. The beats are good, the rapping is good too, but it’s really long, and after a while all songs blend into each other. Sometimes more, not always good.

For as hyped as the Chronic is, I wish it were better.

Ganz ehrlich, nicht für gealtert.3. 1

Dad is probably not going to like this one haha. Classic hip hop, was fun to walk/jog to

Dre's production was great, and there's a lot of good features on this, but I was expecting the whole thing to be more than just "alright".

= the Beatles The beats are great but a lot of the content has aged like milk

Some more of the best classic hip hop. Nobody produces beats like Dre. This also might be one of my all time favorite hip hop album covers.

Everybody sucks a big fat dick! I can somewhat appreciate this for what it is, but it's definitely not something I'd ordinarily listen to (a bit too much "n" and "f" for my taste). I can see the cultural/societal influence of the times around the lyrics and appreciate it for that even if it didn't age well. Good beats + Snoop Dogg help the rating. (3)

There are a couple of songs that I liked here, but as it’s common for old hip-hop, this album feels too repetitive and lacking variety both in production and vocals. It’s not bad, but starts feeling like background noise after some time because most songs just don’t do anything exciting.

En del kule beats, men like mye pinlige tekster. Har aldri hatt noe sansen for rappestilen til Dr. Dre.

Sikkert bra for de som kan høre på rap

Dre: If I saw Eazy-E in a crowd of people I would ram my car into him, fuck the collateral damage. I would spray an automatic weapon at the nursing home where he visits his grandma. I would strap a suicide vest to his firstborn child. Snoop: Knick-knack, paddy whack, the Doggy Dogg’s on it, Bury my bone in your bitch’s eye socket.

Maybe 3.5

I like Dre's voice, solid feats too, although this album lyrically is not really my forte. Fav: Nuthin' but a "G" thang.

Really overhyped

bit over-rated for me? I've tried this a few times and I just don't click with a lot of it in the way I often do with West Coast hip hop of the era. There is no denying how talented Dre is as a producer though

Certain musical movements exist best in a vacuum. As a product of their time, the music is incredible, innovative, iconic. But, this music is a product of it's time. 70s yacht rock, 80s hair metal, and it turns out 90s rap. A select few like Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, heck maybe even early Jay-Z, go beyond this era to become something more significant, perhaps timeless. But the vast majority of 80s-90s rap I've been assigned on this app (N.W.A., Public Enemy, Queen Latifa) are so locked in time they can only be appreciated within the context of that era. Sorry Dr. Dre (and Snoop), your debut unfortunately falls into that trap. Sure the beats are probably still as good today, but the lyrics, skits, flow, and just overall vibes? Totally 90s west coast basic gangster rap. In the vacuum? Well, it's one of the most influential albums of all time and it pretty much opened the gates wide open for west coast rap to take over. So, it's hard to give this album anything less than a 4 but it's really just OK...outside of Nuthin but a "G" Thang, that one will be forever etched into the hip hop hall of fame. Now Chronic 2001, an album that defined the end of my high school experience? Surely nostalgia won't cloud my judgment on that one and I'll be able to consider it outside of that particular vacuum, right?

Okay so after watching the Diddy documentary, I kinda have to support the West Coast, even though Biggie is the best artist that came out of this war shit. Honestly, very significant album yes yes I see that. But then I ask myself the question: do I want to listen to a man rapping about his dick, his bitches etc? welllllll no not really. Beats are absolutely awesome tho, out of principal u get 3 stars sorry not sorry

I feel like you could play any random five second clip of this album -including the unfunny skits- and what you hear would almost certainly have immediately justified the Parental Advisory sticker on the front.

I really liked this album but the foul language made me so uncomfortable. The music and voices are wonderful. If it did not have so much of the n word and female objectification, it would get a 4, maybe a 5, but because of that, i would not buy and give it 3 stars

The start of the G-Gunk Era. The hits really show off Dre's style and where he was taking rap. I'm only really familiar with the singles, although it felt like everyone owned this album at the time. The interim skits take me out of the flow. Fuck Wit Dre Day Let Me Ride Nuthin' But A "G" Thang Bitches Ain't Shit

Handful of good songs but cut the stupid Skits and 15 minutes and it would be great. 3.

A west-coast classic: but save for Dr. Dre's slick production, nothing much impress

Its a classic but in my middle age english man way, I couldn't listen everyday.

maybe a lil misogynistic.. favorite song: stranded on death row

I am surprisingly underwhelmed which is not what I thought going into this. It’s a good album with some classic beats but overall I think the album relies on the beats (nothing wrong with that) and lacks great punchy verses that I was expecting to hear more of. That being said I would return to this purely for the beats.

listened to 3/4 of it wasnt worth my time really repetitive yeah 3/5

While I appreciate how influential this album was, it's disappointing to say the least. Too many songs about Dr. Dre's dick, and really, other than two key Hit Songs, most of it was forgettable. Favorite Track: "The Roach(The Chronic Outro)".

the skits man cmon

I honestly think, this album might be a little overrated. There’s far more interesting and versatile hiphop-albums. It’s not bad, but just a little bland. The beats bang, tho👍

Not a fan

Decent. Was not in the mood for hip hop at all but enjoyed most of the tracks. It's impossible for me not to think it's kind of hilarious to hear the word "biatch" used not ironically but as actual slang that's supposed to be cool.

Anthemic hip hop record, definitely deserves inclusion in this list. 8/10 [KEEP]

Never heard an album whose main subject are dicks, and did not expect it here. Of course, some of the lyrics seem a bit crass, and out of place, but overall that is not the feeling I get while listening to the whole thing. What I get is anger, that I can understand, that is a decent fuel creatively. I think production here is everything, beats are cool, the different featuring are too. The skits run a bit long, but yeah there was something there and it felt fresh at the time.

banger

Not too bad, can’t say I loved the entire thing but it’s iconic. Have to appreciate it for what it is.

Classic.

Classic- paints a picture of a time and place (what hip hop does best imo).

its REALLY great, but i dont like rap AT ALL, just not my vibe

Good to educate myself on lots of little bits id heard before but not known it was from this album?

Love the production that Dre brings, but I don't care for a lot of the lyrics, and it's really surprising how much Snoop features (especially considering it's a debut) - feels more like a Snoop album at times.

cool meh couldnt finish it it felt weaker by the finish

Didn't age that well. Has some bangers, and it's kind of funny, or are we supposed to take this seriously?

I knew this day would eventually come. Everything about this album should be a fail with me - from the skits to the lyrics - and if I were hearing it for the first time today, it probably would have been. However, I've been listening to 'The Chronic' long enough now that being objective would be nearly impossible beyond acknowledging that, yes, this is mostly just immature, profane, misogynistic, homophobic, at times overly violent, hyper-masculine posturing that, honestly, hasn't aged all that well. But I still dig it, 'G'. The sampling, mixing, and flow are top notch. There are several earworms on here that can creep up on me out of nowhere - even if I haven't listened to the tracks in years. I'd say that's pretty powerful stuff. So, in an attempt to be fair, I'll split the difference between the objective (1) and subjective (5) here.

A tricky one. This didn’t agree well at all. It is very influential though. If this were to be released now I would consider this a one, and never consider listening to Dre again. I don’t really see a reason for a repeat listen ever again. I’m still going to acknowledge its importance to the genre.

Pretty iconic but there’s better

2026.01.11.

Not really my jam

Favourite Songs: Fuck Wit Dre Day Lil' Ghetto Boy Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat

Fantastic beats, some of the skits and lyrics didn’t age that well, overall classic album. No one needs to hear Dr. Dre having sex on an album

rap really isn’t the same now is it? nuthin’ but a G thang is a song my parents have always loved and sang snippets of in passing, but i’ve never listened to the full album before. sooo fun, ballsy, and offers a great amount of light social commentary. plus i love it when an artist weaves similar elements throughout the whole album.

The excessive cursing gets difficult to listen to.

i fuck wit this

I would never have picked this album but it was super fun to listen and dance to while I cooked dinner for the famaroo! I don’t know why I enjoyed it, but I did!

Kinda samey.

Solid modern rap album. 7/10

Remembered this being better

Good stuff. Not my thang per se.

Great beats. Great era for rap, I like the early 90s stuff. Don't like the misogyny or fake confidence.

I didn't like this as much as I've liked a lot of other rap from this period. The beats are good, but both musically and lyrically it's really dark and suffocating. I'm not a fan of much of Snoops work, because it seems to always have that heaviness, whereas other rappers from that same period bring a little more energy and joy, even when rapping about similar topics.

This album gave birth to my favorite hip-hop subgenre, G-Funk. I can't get enough of that sound. The featured artists (Snoop and Nate) would go on from here to win my ears over time and time again. "The Chronic" stands alone in a different light. There are great production styles and fantastic hooks riddled throughout, but mixed with trite skits and long dialogues which takes away from the overall effect.

Not necessarily my cuppa

Good, well put together. Content is a bit much for me. 3.5 rounding down.

Classic hip hop, without a doubt BUT Aged very poorly and Snoop carried Best = Fuck wit Dre day Skip = The doctor's office

Good, solid album.

At times, flashes of creativity. At other times, cliché 90s gangster rap

misogynistic but the beats were fire, loved lyrical gangbang

Decent rap

Loved the production, didn’t pay much attention to the lyrics but there was a lot of mention of willies

Unsurprisingly the production on this album is great. I think it gets a little bit reparative in the end. It stills good one.

I like some of this. Dre makes cool beats. He's not a singer or a great great rapper, but I like it. Obv, Snoop Dogg's debut is important and cool here. But it's just too long and the skits are a complete waste of time. Terrible! Too many N's. Too many MFs. Too much misogyny. But still. some if it is fun. I definitely won't list to this whole thing again. But a few of the singles, fo sho! Super generously giving it a 3.

2025 is the year I actually get Hip Hop. This is a pretty solid album, with nice beats. It's not nearly as good as A Tribe Called Quest (from the same era), but it's still pretty solid. Some songs are very filler-y and really bring down the quality of the album. Some of the lyrics are really a turn off too. Would've been a 4 but the lyrics make it a 3.

It’s proactive and iconic, but not super listenable for me these days. The irreverent skits, the subject matter. Doesn’t do much for me. I also don’t love taking a song like “make my funk the p funk” and just rambling over it. The beats are nice and it’s nostalgic though.

Two listens. West Coast > East Coast. No “Deep Cover” = -1 star.

It was good

Sympa mais toujours un peu pareil

J’ai jamais autant entendu le N-word je crois 😂 Bon sinon… c’est un des plus gros producteurs US. J’aime le côté old school

This album gets a three from me simply because it’s not something I’d ever return to. That said, I’d be remiss not to acknowledge its cultural significance within hip-hop history. The number of recognizable samples alone makes its influence obvious. The provocative lyrics are always a bit jarring to me when it comes to ’90s rap, but I understand they were very much a product of the era. With the war on drugs looming, gangsta rap became an expression of the oppression communities were facing and a reflection of how artists were coping at the time. I wouldn’t say the album has aged particularly well, but it undeniably belongs to a moment when its lyrics gave voice to a historically silenced community. The Dr. Dre x Snoop collab tracks were a highlight for me.

Liked this album, NWA - links me into other artists

Fragile egos, misogyny, the n word and dicks, with some great beats. How good is Snoop on this though?!

Honestly, some historic beats. This was one of my first rap album I listened to, alongside NWA's Straight Outta Compton. Though, after listening to this 15+ years later. The way they treat and talk about women, is cringe.

A classic that kicked off a career for both Dre and Snoop. I don't think the beats or lyrics hold up as well as "2001" IMO, but he hadn't fully honed his craft at this point. This isn't for everyone, the lyrics are raunchy and in your face, but, like it or not, it was the start of a movement in music. This is when hair metal and dance pop started to take a back seat to rap/hip-hop. The listen counts are off the charts, no song has fewer than 3M listens with the bonafide rap classic "Nuthin' But A G Thang" coming in at over a half billion and "Fuck Wit Dre Day" clocking in at nearly 100M. The keyboard backbones get a little overplayed on this album (see "Deeez Nuuuts"), that makes it sound old school and the key reason it doesn't hold up as well today. "Lil' Ghetto Boy" is a more mature track, I forgot about it, but it's good. On the complete other hand, "Bitches Ain't Shit", was an unnecessary song then and now (31M listens!). It encapsulates a period in time, gives Snoop liftoff to what will become a long career (He's got his own Bowl Game this year!) and provided what is easily one of the most recognizable and loved hip-hop songs of all time ("Nuthin' But A G Thang"). But overall it's pretty average if you weren't in high school in 1992 and grew up on it. Influence for sure, popularity definitely, unique (at the time) and impact oh yeah. It deserves a spot on the T1001 for those reasons. 3.5 stars.

Classic Rap album, only knew nothin but a G thang. Pretty good, some songs were a bit too long. I’d give it a 7/10

As a white boy from Hove, this album meant alot to me growing up

Iconic album, iconic album cover. Have never been blown away by this album. 3/5

truly influential. however I'm not all that for the west coast classics :/

kinda nice

021121 11:20 3

The first half of the album had my head bopping, but it didn't have me completely pulled in. Lyrical Gangbang transition into High Powered had me on the floor. The rest of the album was strong. Some really nasty beats in here. Not my usual genre, actually the first hip hop album I've heard in full. I understand the influence for sure but I guess I gravitate towards music with a different subject matter. Just my personal preference. 3/5

its no east coast. 3.5

Rap. Demasiado machacón. Mucha glock mucha bitches. Dre y Snoop dog

This is a classic... but ultimately i dont really care for like half the songs on this

Nice to hear the Dogg back in his prime days.

Rätt nice! Fattar varför det här albumet är så omtalat, och finns några riktigt bra låtar men overall som album är det rätt långt ifrån perfekt :')

I’m getting old but what I must have enjoyed as subversive as a kid I now find cringe and even offensive. Don’t try listing to his follow up again if you feel at all the same. This guy literally hates women. I think he beats them up too?

Pretty iconic and important for the genre, but gangster rap isn’t really my cup of tea.. 3.25/5

i feel like everyone used to use music as a form of political and social commentary and now i can’t remember the last album i heard that was as good as this and said something actually important in the lyrics

I expected more from this. However it has a strong, defining vibe.

I’m surprised I didnt like this more. Production is immense. It lacks the charm of other classic releases from the era. I feel like NWA and Public Enemy go harder. I definitely prefer Dre’s rapping to Snoop (always struggled to get on board with his lazy style). It still has great moments - but it’s a high 3 from me

Dre is getting a high 3 from me, the production is great, and the tunes are catchy. The subject matter loses me a bit hence the 3 rather than the 4 for my tastes. I like the G-Funk sound but not as much as abstract hip hop and golden age boom bap.

I don't know that this holds up very well 30+ years later. The vocals and production (both innovative at the time, I'm sure) both feel pretty dated and a lot of the lyrics are kinda dumb. I'd go higher if I were scoring for historical relevance.

You know, I had snoop ft. His good friend dre the other day and I didn't really enjoy it. This is dre ft. his good friend snoop and to my ears it is the same album. But for some reason, I really enjoyed it today. Maybe I'm just in a different mood.

I enjoy the sounds of Radio Los Santos

Sonically and musically amazing. Lyrically… not so much.

I'm a fan of 90s rap, so I've heard this many times before. I think Dr Dre has the best beats. I love all the music he samples, and he does a good job with them. The problem I have with this album is he is a terrible MC. He's also a phony gangster, and it's cringe listening to him pretend hes not. If you're gonna be a phony, at least be funny like the other Death Row guys. This album was never close to as good as Doggystyle. There are some good songs I still listen to regularly from this album, like Rat A Tat Tat and Stranded on Death Row.

A good album overall. The first half through Little Ghetto Boy is the best. The last half is a little hit or miss. Lyrical Gangbang is underwhelming compared to its title. It seems like Dr Dre and Co set a template for 90s hip hop albums here- a little bloated with silly skits in between. The skits here are pretty entertaining though. I definitely have some nostalgia for this album, as a suburban white kid who used to bump this in my beat up late 90s Toyota Camry. It doesn’t hit the same way as it did when I was 16, but this is still a good album overall and definitely an essential listen.

One of the rare super classic rap albums that I think is kinda overrated. The first half is pretty strong with a lot of bangers: Fuck With Dre Day, Let Me Ride, Nothing But a G Thang. Unfortunately some of it sounds kinda dated and hasn't aged the best. Only about half of it bangs, in tye 2nd half you've got those dated synthesizers and kinda weaker basslines. Another problem is the rappers, they're really not that good, in fact kinda generic. Snoop Dogg is good on this, but the rest I really don't care for that much and they get old pretty fast. This album has an interesting spot in history but it's pretty inconsistent.

This made me feel so old and white. The misogyny, homophobia, and violent stuff did not age well IMO, but it still manages to capture a vibe.

Not my cuppa, but you can hear a few entire genres of music exploding in real time

rugrats

The beats fuck. The lyrics aren’t to my taste but god the beats. The beats. I am very certainly not anywhere near the target audience for this but I can appreciate it. No nostalgia, barely any associations but you feel that this was a monumental moment in time. I appreciate that

Some nice basslines on there but wouldn’t listen again

It’s always Beats by Dr. Dre, but never Lyrics by Dr. Dre. #Noticing

I assumed it would be good and I was right! Production was great.

Pretty decent, there are some songs that are downright menacing and there are excellent beats all throughout.

You’ve been torturing me with those shit almost a whole week

I appreciate g-funk but this is not my jam

For supposedly 'alpha males' there's definitely a preoccupation with rapping about penis on this album. It takes the NWA gangsta sub-genre and transports it to the new style, the Parliament influenced G-Funk. A lot more laid back, mellow, with that needly high-pitched sound that is immediately identifiable as Dre. As with many such albums >1 hour in this genre, there's a law of diminishing returns. 'The $20 Sack Pyramid' is your mandatory skit that retains no interest over 30 years later. 'Lyrical Gangbang' and 'High Powered' ('I drop bombs like Hiroshima') and 'Stranded on Death Row' should've been left for the deluxe edition. Sluggish. Whilst I admire this album for creating a very definable sound, and it has some undeniable hip-hop classics, in comparison to the Native Tongues, MC Solaar and so forth, the lyrics have little cerebral value. It's all guns and dicks in mouths. Good, no doubt. Great, no.

I know this album is a classic of its genre. The instrumentals/beats are fire, but for me it's very hard to listen to a whole album with so much profanity and misogyny.

The production on this one is still the biggest standout. But overall this album hasn’t aged well lyrically. Outside of the released known singles, most of the other songs just cruise along without reaching that level. And at times it becomes a tired listen. Without Snoop I don’t think the album would’ve made it as far.

I thought this would hit a little more. It’s good, super cohesive and def iconic in its own ways. Just goes back to the same well a lot

Not a rat fan, but it was enjoyable to listen to

The standout tracks were great. Good production, good rhymes, just didn’t fully hit for me

I enjoyed this. Entertaining enough. Definitely of its time, and seemed to get a little samey towards the end, but was still fun.

Classic stuff...

Some classics on here, feels like an album that helped define West Coast rap. Probably a 4 without the skits all over the album. I’m glad that’s a thing of the past.

It started off really weak in my opinion, but started to flow a little better by the end. Not really my cup of tea.

Pretty good - just feel like a poser listening to dr Dre lol

jaa iwie a vibe aber iwie ah nit lol

Nuthin but a G thang only great song on here. Mostly a precursor to better West Coast stuff later in the 90s. Laughed my ass off at the pyramid one

The samples / music is great, funky. The words and lyrics are not for me. 2.75 stars.

Garbage

Misogyny

Litt grovt språk.

This album aged horribly, and there are definitely some subjects that are focused on way too much… but I love the sound that this album has.

This was pretty good, but I was honestly expecting to enjoy it more than I actually did. I think I prefer old-skool artists like A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul etc. That squealy-ass synth that seems to be dripping over most tracks is kind of irritating too. Favourite tracks: Let Me Ride, Lil' Ghetto Boy, A Nigga Witta Gun.

для любителей репа.

Not especially my cup of tea. I like Dre's stuff with nwa a lot more than I do this.

Gostei. Algumas músicas são muito boas, outras nem tanto.

It's ok, not my sort of thing at all

Thematically and lyrically, the album is detestable and barbaric. I wouldn't trust these guys within a mile of my family, but the music and the beats are infectious and engaging. I have enjoyed some of the hip hop on this list. But it's plain to see that hip-hop culture has had disastrous effects on society. It's a crime that so many young men have looked to people like this for role models.

Historic but kinda dated

Das Album ist am besten wenn Dre nicht rappt. Produktion ist einfach krass. Tja was soll man über die Texte sagen, ziemliche misogyne Scheiße.

Enjoyed this more than I expected to

Oh, The Chronic! Helped define early 90s hip hop. It hasn't necessarily aged well, particularly in it's lyrical content, but it was so influential in developing the West Coast sound. I'm having a hard time rating this one. It's not as good as 2001. 3 stars I think.

Give credit for genre-defining. Nuthin but a G Thang is class and brought Snoop to the masses. Cool music on some tunes when the funky bassline is allowed to breathe. Angry rapping about record labels is amusing. The rest of the gangsta rap bravado gets tired very quickly.

This album is angry, aggressive and abrasive, from the lyrics and themes to even the production and the shrill, piercing instrumentation. As a white male I feel unsafe and unwelcome. So, uh. mission accomplished I guess. The songs where it's some dudes cosplaying as big dick murderers, ain't it pal.

2.5 really. It’s no 2001

Um! It's fine. Nuthin but a G Thang is the stand out track for a reason. And also Snoop Dog. He's the best part be leaps and bounds.

No termino de entrar aunque me gustan las aportaciones de Snoop Dogg ( 70% del album ) y los beats. Tiene el aire noventero ( una vez mas ganado por la nostalgia millennial ) de un tiempo mas analogico. Un tres for the memories

Nahhh man. I'm not the target audience for this album. I probably would have liked this way more as a 13 year old piece of shit than I do these days. There are arguably some really good beats on here. It's got that sound you instantly recognize. But I'm not gonna touch the social issues with a 20 foot pole. Lottttta rapping about guns and dongs. Death Row should have just banged it out together to get over all the sexual tension. It all just gets tired after 4 or 5 songs. Also is this a Snoop album or Dre? Dre absolutely hooked up a young Snoop. That all aside, The Chronic is alright. The beats will hold your attention even if a lot of the lyrics are eye rolling these days. I can see how this was everywhere back in the 90s. "Let It Ride" and "Stranded On Death Row" are bangers. The Chronic is a solid 3/5 for me and the influence it's had.

I loved this in 1992 when I was 14/15 I'm horrified by this in 2025 when I'm 47. I know its a cornerstone of 90s west coast gangster rap, but it really doesn't stand the test of time, and under the modern gaze a lot of this is downright reprehensible... Violence, misogyny, homophobia, its all here if that's your thing.

The album where Dr Dre created ‘the sound’ from this album on whenever I heard that whiney moog drone I know I’m either about to see the credits to Grand Theft Auto or that in about 20 seconds I’m going to hear Snoop Dogg start rapping. I think this album opened the gates for hip hop becoming widely accepted commercially and to be ironically enjoyed by white middle class people. I think that while the album lyrically has a way of making light of its dark themes and also sounds dated today with its heavy use of misogyny it is also clear that although enjoyed through a fantasy lense by the white boys of the world they are talking about very real things in their existence including racial inequality, gun violence and drugs. Production wise I think Dre is clearly on track to become the king here, the only reason I can’t give it a 4 is because I can never not hear it as the run up to 2001. Still a fantastic and important album.

Not bad, I am not nostalgic about this as I am about 2001 chronic.

The album that introduced both Snoop Dogg and diss rap to the masses. Still, it's definitely an album that is more important for its influence than the quality of its tracks.

Separate the killer beats art from the awful lyrics artist. Lots of these albums with bad lyrics pass me by because they mumble but Dre annunciates how he will beat a woman if she talks back to him and how women are shit but hoes and tricks. It's tough because there's nostolgia but it's a painful listen

Can’t say I follow rap beef, but there were some good songs on here.

Epitomizes west coast rap. Crazy beats throughout and effortlessly cool. This is like the 90s version of LA Woman, in terms of being the album that is the prototypical LA music sound of a generation. That said lyrically it's pretty weak and not entirely for me.

Incredible history, just not for me I don’t think

To be honest, rap and hip-hop aren't a genre I listen to at all. So listening to an album where there are more swear words than not is a new experience! The lyrics had no impact on me at all but the music is superb - if there is an instrumental version of this, I'd be all over it

Classic album but language is a bit on the jarring side

I'll give this a 3.5 and round it up. The beats are really strong in this album, but the lyrics are over the top at times and the comedy tracks are cringy when they're not outright stealing from others, like De La Soul.

This the 12th album i've listened to. I enjoy Dr. Dre and snoop dog lyrism in some of these songs where they talk about their experiences on the street and how the uphold their relations. Having an entire song thats just a sextape is insane and kinda hard, but im not trying listen to that in the car. I like this album its just not really my thing 81/100

It was okay. Too many skits and diss tracks, and not enough solid songs. I get that this was Dre's first solo rap album and needed to show his own sound off, but I don't think even he figured out what that was supposed to be yet. Pretty sure this is on the list more as a historic milestone.

Honestly, the beats are great but the rapping is actually pretty lame. And don't try to say it's because it's from 30-odd years ago. Check out what Biggie, Jay-Z and Tupac were doing in the same time period and you'll see what I mean.

I cannot relate to this album in the slightest. So offensive.. but I LIKE IT. Also love that Snoop Dogg is so prominent in this album. I actually think I might like Snoop better than Dre, which might be the main reason why I like this album. The first half was better than the second.

I listen to a lot of modern hip hop and rap and really enjoyed listening to this. After a few songs I really started to get into the style. That said it’s honestly very samey. After listening through most of the album and getting to work I didn’t bother listening to the rest of the tracks until the next day. Also the synth is very grating.

Was alright

a time capsule of 90's gangster rap. you got sketches, songs of loose women, drugs and gangbanging, all the hallmarks. Its iconic for a reason and earns its status, but doesnt really stretch beyond those core themes.

I’ve never been huge into The Chronic… the prank call on Deez Nuts is great but overall the album is pretty one note and way too long. Bitches and hoes and weed smoke blah blah blah. I understand that it pioneered a genre of hip hop and is culturally significant but overall I don’t really enjoy listening to it.

beeyotchhhh

I’m glad this challenge is helping me like hip-hop more. Would give it 4 stars but the lyrics are seriously like… wtf.

Created the unique sound. But lyrics were really bad

Mutherfucking DRE

The perfect crusin in your car with the windows down album. I’ve been doing it since the 90’s and I did it today. Light up a blunt and go start a fight.

I can’t believe I hadn’t given this a through-and-through until now. I liked it, but honestly, I prefer the Chronic 2001. It’s tough listening to the insanely misogynistic lyrics. I don’t accept that it’s just part of it, or that I should just look past it.

Pretty good

I know it’s influential, I know how important g funk is to the genre, but tbh this doesn’t hit for me. Maybe it’s the skits, maybe it’s the length, but I just didn’t feel this as much

Strong, catchy beats and engaging overall with unique scene-setting interludes that add atmosphere. Production style felt a bit repetitive towards the end.

The lyrics on this album are terrible. Snoop also carries the album. I'm giving it a three for the beats

Some great tracks, but too much boasting about one’s dick, and way too much reliance on “motherfucker” drag this one down a bit. Do love Snoop’s contributions though.

The album that took the sub-genre and made it the genre.

One, two three to the fo’, This album isn’t with the times any mo’, All the homophobia and misogyny, Just undercuts the music’s philosophy, The beats are electric with those West Coast vibes, But the lyrics give me trouble with the gangsta lives, This album I guess isn’t made for me, So I hope you don’t mind if I give it a three!

The beats and those high pitch leads are so iconic. I’m not normally a rap fan but the flow is amazing and the world of early 90’s Compton is vivid and striking.

The Chronic = Iconic Gs up Hoes down Iconic album - this "gangster rap" was so good, so "of the moment" and so identifiable to the West Coast and LA particularly. No way this could be made now, it would be banned and Dre would probably be arrested for some "unamerican" BS or hate speech. That's how it was in the late 80s and 90s though. These dudes were real. Does it age well? It still sounds great, Snoop and Dre are still around, but like benevolent Grandpas now. Doesn't matter, it is unforgettable and changed popular music forever.

Jeez that is infectious. G-funk grabs me like the start of hip hop did. I am falling into it while I am trying to avoid the repulsive political details. Snoop and funk elevates this into the stratosphere. Poised right on the line between reflecting and creating the violent background. Haunting.

Ganz nice. Viel old school hiphop

A few good tracks, but the album is largely overrated. Dr. Dre is an average MC

The Chronic – Dr. Dre (1992) | West Coast Hip-Hop / G-Funk | Avg: 7.29 | Favorite Song: “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang”* The Chronic is one of the most important hip-hop records of the ‘90s, and your ratings make it clear that it still holds up well today. “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang” is the obvious standout. It's slick, smooth, and effortlessly cool; it’s the blueprint for G-Funk done right. Most of the tracks land solidly in the 7 to 8 range, which suggests you found Dre’s laid-back, bass-heavy production consistently engaging, even if not every track hits with the same force. While the album is front-loaded with iconic moments, your ratings also reflect how the second half has more of a steady groove than jaw-dropping highs. Some of the unrated tracks likely serve as skits or interludes, which are part of the album’s texture but not necessarily worth scoring. Still, The Chronic holds its place as a vibe-heavy, genre-shaping project. Even with a few dips in momentum, it’s packed with memorable hooks, unmistakable atmosphere, and a cultural swagger that still resonates decades later.

While there are some classic songs on The Chronic, it has never been a standout rap album to me. Dr.Dre's production has never done it for me (except for Eminem's early work). Lyrically it's nothing like what was happening on the East Coast at the time...which is what my tastes gravitate to. With that said, this album does have quite a bit of nostalgia for me and is always enjoyable to listen to in the car.

Eh, not my vibe

Despite generally being a hip-hop fan, I've never been that high on this album or the west coast g-funk sound in general. I think Dre is a pretty good producer, though he's far from my favorite. But I don't think the rapping here is very good. Snoop is a lot better than anyone else when he's on. The lyrics are generally kind of terrible. "Nuthin' But a G Thang" is the highlight here, and there's a few other decent cuts ("Lyrical Gangbang" stands out as a good deep cut), but I think this is a super overrated album as far as 90s hip-hop goes. 3 stars.

I listened this in my early 20s, being non native english speaker , did not understand all the lyrics... But I liked the beats. I guess is a relic of that time, even if as some comments says the lyrics might be cancelled today, it os worth a listen specially if you are in your early 20s...

The skits are dreadful. The first couple of tracks are garbage but it picked up after that and overall was a decent listen. The drug and guns schtick is dull now (wasn’t it always?)

snoop did his thing

Controversial take, I don’t love this album. I definitely don’t hate it, it’s got some great tracks. But people act like it’s a no skip album which I don’t agree with. The album’s greatest strength, I’d say, is the beats. I don’t know if it’s live instruments or very clean samples, either way the instrumentals are my favorite aspect to the album and I think that’s the biggest reason this album is so successful. Genuinely the beats are so original and creative to the point where you can hear their influence in current rap music. My biggest gripe with the album is that the whole second half of the album I’m does nothing for me and feels like filler. Ultimately I enjoyed half of the album I just wish it was shorter.

The flow is great, the backing beats are great. Snoops presence is strong in this one to the point that it’s essentially a Snoop Dog and Dr. Dre album. The only thing that I really have to complain about is that every song is about the same shit. A very one track minded album where every song has to be about being hard, their nuts, or how hard their nuts are in some other dudes mouth or something I don’t know. I wasn’t ready for the skit where Snoop turned into sexually aggressive Michael Jackson. 6/10

oh to be young again drinking Turners Tea and chewin' on candy cigarettes.

I’ve listened a bunch and it’s good but in its entirety feels like a task. Also losing points for heavily paling in comparison to 2001

There’s a lot of obvious talent here. Love hearing early Snoop earn his reputation — his delivery is unmatched. But all the energy and talent is, to me, wasted on the anger of young men directed at the system that oppresses them (richly deserved) and the woman they treat like trash (not deserved). After a while, the anger and misogyny get boring without some deeper analysis. There are some catchy and well crafted hits but much of this material hasn’t aged well, to my ears. It’s a 3. I would love to hear how these guys would do this album today — how much deeper would the analysis be with the perspective of time & experience?

La vrd no se de rap solo me gustan los beats y adquirir ma actitud dura e impenetrable que me transmiten sus voces graves

I recognize this is a well known and famous album and artist but it’s not for me

Has anything in rap music aged as badly as the skit? Luckily not many in those album but still annoying. Also I found this album did not hold up as well as his next big album 2001.

not a fan of the themes of this genre of rap. snoop always has the same flow. but it does hit though.

I get why Dre is really just a producer cause the production in the album fucks so much, unfortunately the verses largely aren’t my favorite

I like the grooves, the synthesizer sounds, the vocal delivery (especially Snoop's), but I just can't get into the lyrics. Undisputedly an influential album. Also my favorite gangster rap album to garden to so far.

Not my style of music

The beats and production were good, but rap isn’t my thing.

Not my style, but I do enjoy his enthusiasm.

Some of it is good, some of it is Dre, all of it is too long

its decent rap

I’ve never been transported back to the 90s so easily. 2001 is better though

Another rap album, and I'm already tired of writing reviews about them. A lot of details in these albums get lost if you're not able to catch the lyrics on the fly. And I can't catch the lyrics on the fly: 1. Because I'm bad at listening in a foreign tongue 2. Because I listen to them while working 3. Because I don't fucking care about all this "I'm the real motherfucker and I'll bring you down" stuff. So, reviewing rap albums is a tough exercise for me, and for many non-English speakers. Rants aside, this one was good. Or at least it was not as bad as others that I've come across on this list. Did I hate it? No. Will I get back? Maybe, when I'm feeling too much like a white-collar worker and want to be a gangsta for a day. By the way, "Straight Outta Compton" is still my favorite non-Spanish rap album so far.

Groovy album with funky baselines. The dre/snoop dog combo is fun to listen to. They just both flow along in a smooth west coast style. Love the backing vocals on many tracks. Lyrically there are many songs that didnt age well.

Not being a big rap fan this album was just okay for me. Definitely a highly polished and engineering production. I liked the rhythm and beats better than the rap style and lyrics. Interesting to see Jewell featured on it.

Not a bad album for my long run today. A steady beat throughout (which ended up dragging in the middle tracks). Some great tracks (Let me Ride, Nothing But a G Thing). I like the Dre/snoop tracks basically and the rest are alright.

J'aime bien mais celui là reste mid finalement

Clearly not the target audience for this, and I'm not knowledgeable enough about gangster rap to know it's place in history. Still, I can appreciate the artistry and skill and from a purely auditory standpoint it is fun to listen to (maybe not for a full hour though).

Iconic but falls off second half

Enjoyed the first few songs - brought me back to the early 90s.

Dre just isn’t a rapper. Awful skits. Aged poorly. But Dre’s such a good producer that this still has moments that make it vital.

Litt kult, litt alfa.

Pretty good album, but automatic points off for Dre being instrumental in bringing in Eminem.

Just ok

Let Me Ride // TDTNTO // Nuthin’ But A “G” Thang // Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat //

Lots of iconic beats and melodies on this one. Rap is not usually my jam but I must give some credit where it is due (but the blatant misogyny is so tiresome and blah).

Good, but not for me.

Like I probably said in a past Eminem review, I like Dr Dre’s production at this time. Everything is smooth and cool and well put together. I like this a lot better than Eminem too, because I don’t have to listen to Eminem’s voice. Overall, a classic that more or less missed me decades ago and will miss me again. I enjoyed it, but probably won’t ever go back.

Crass, vulgar, and infantile. Hip Hop deserves better lyrics. Nevertheless, the beats are sick and the flow of Dre and Snoop is tight.

Another album that makes me reminisce about my misspent youth, cruising round the hood on my bmx with an uzi in my hand whilst getting me some west coast classics

Whilst swearing is funny, calling women hoes all the time is not. Beats are peak Dre, but the lyrics are more dated than Neil Young's politics.

It’s a classic and I respect that, but it’s not my style

I accidentally misread and listened to Chronic 2001 first so I've just had a Dre fest. I was half expecting to write a mature review about the racial slurs and rampant misogyny, but I listened to this album and enjoyed all of it. Was it a semi ironic enjoyment? Yes... But it had me bouncing and made me smile. I think 90's Dre captures the best of the genre and is the moment American hip-hop peaked. This first album still has some of the sounds of the rap music of the late 80's but it has already become a more intricate, polished production. Turn it up, light a spliff, and pretend you aren't a bald white guy who lives in the South of England works in IT.

Classic Hip Hop.

A real 50/50 of an album. You can tell the progression from early hip hop to this is significant - the beats are heavy, the earpiercing g-funk synths worm their way into your brain. A whole generation of wannabe suburban rappers were born from this posturing. And yet. Overwhelmingly, the rapping is Not Good. Snoop is so far ahead of everyone else on the record - including Dre - that it's not even funny. I know complaining about misogyny in rap is a waste of time, but there's not even any inventive humour in it. Compare with Eminem or Odd Future, and it's just so teenage. An important album, but one that's definitely been superceded.

Tired, dad needs treatment. Went to bed early

I really love the G Funk sound of the west coast rap scene that Dre pioneered... But I don't like his rap style as much as Ice Cube or Easy E.

I’ve had multiple insights into the messaging behind this album, my main one being that I'm missing context on gang politics that I think would have given this extra depth. I wrote the second half of this sentence halfway through track 1 but at 2/3 through the album I think it’s even more pertinent . There are a number of real-world issues addressed in this album that are greatly overshadowed by the message to perpetuate gang violence. Totally appreciate that this message is a commentary on survival as a black man in the US. It’s born of desperation, and the threats and disses in the album are attacks with words rather than bullets but it’s an attack nonetheless. It’s hard to see the anti-racial activism addressed in the album as anything more than ironic. Isn’t until track 5 that we hear genuine artistry There’s a stark juxtaposition between certain instrumental elements throughout the album. An example of this is the keyboard solo from 3mins on 'Fuck Wit Dre Day' and the flute accompaniment on Lil’ Ghetto Boy. Overall it’s a bit of a mix, I don’t vibe with the violent and sexist messaging in the album, I don’t understand why it’s become mainstream. It’s an interesting insight, delving into a precursor to more modern genres but it disheartens me slightly that modern artists don’t have the perspective to steer towards a more positive change in messaging.

Listened to this out a long run. Fairly enjoyed it, particularly the first half. The misogyny is wild, but it’s of its time. Can’t believe it was released the year I was born, because the production still sounds spot on. I can imagine it being huge when it was first released. Overall good, but wouldn’t listen again.

Remember when Snoop was scary?

The Day The N***** Took Over'. Hoe lekker de productie ook is, het wordt op een gegeven moment een beetje cliché. Een sublieme eerste helft van het album wordt bijgestaan door een rommelig slot, maar desalniettemin één van mijn favoriete West Coast albums. 7,5/10 Highlights: The Day The N***** Took Over Nuthin' But A ''G''Thang Lil' Ghetto Boy

Ik heb het hele album in een gestolen wagen door LA gereden en met cheat-codes geprobeerd de top van één of andere berg te bereiken maar ik ging elke keer voortijdig dood vanwege roekeloosheid. Dre is wel een sicke producer. 6,5/10 Highlights Nuthin' But A G Thang

Yea pretty fun. The hits are nostalgic and the little weeee weeee he has going on through the album is a groundbreaking little ear worm. But it the boasting bravado and violence of it all grates on you after a while. Snoop stands out from the jump though. A total star even though now hes saturated. Also, Dre is not a good dude. There's a lot of hate for the Kanye stuff on here. And rightly so. But dre should be scrutinized as well and gets of clean by too many

On one hand, a really accomplished album production and rapping wise, like this album sounds SO good with so many iconic lines and songs, but on the other hand it is held back by the fact that as a 90s album it isn't really the best when it comes to filler skits, the rampant sexism (I take the violence over hearing "The Doctor's Office" ever again), or simply that it feels 10 or 15 mins too long, if you crop anything past "Lyrical Gangbang" and made "Stranded on Death Row" the closer, I think I'd be into this album way more, but as it stands, it's best songs are great but not enough to make me forget the worst ones.

My husband and I listened to this together as he loves this album. Being from the CD era, this album drops off in the second half, but the first half was okay to my non-rap fan ears.

3.3 2x

There are some great songs, and they are some rubbish ones too. 3.5 stars

This was a fun listen. Wouldn’t necessarily come back to listen or add any songs. 3/5

It’s a classic for sure and Dr. Dre is a genius, but I’ve never actually enjoyed this album as much as others seem to.

Честно говоря, довольно средненькой рэп-альбом. Не особо чем-то зацепило, но биты кайфовые и качает приятно. Не хватило какой-то задумки (а может, я просто её не понял). Приятные треки есть, но большого интереса у меня не вызвало.

beats better than expected. surely some (or plenty?) of misogyny, if i had to take a guess, but didn't pay any attention to the lyrics.

Amazing production throughout, with . And really cant deny the influence and importance. But saying 'mother fucker' a lot isn't the most impressive lyrical performance. Nor are songs focused on Dre's dick or his glock. Some outright homophobia and misogyny too.

Dr goes solo, & the rest is history. Snoop there too, hip hop from an era when it stood out - aggressive, raw snarling with a language that was offensive & like nothing else really before it. Like it or loathe it, this sound was groundbreaking.

Best not to overthink this one. Obviously belongs on the list, listening back to all the things in here that were such a big part of the cultural reckonings in the early 90s.

Here's a hot take: an instrumental version of The Chronic would be just as influential and probably more enjoyable to listen to. Dr. Dre is the only rapper who actively gets hidden on his own albums, and he's right to do it.

bem interessante que ele num usa muito sample e os beats são super clean. mas achei mei cansativo. é bacana, mas num eh pra todo dia não...

I honestly though I would like this more than I actually did, knowing that I'm a fan of hip-hop and how influential this album is. The beats are great and there's a lot of great artists featuring in this album, each one giving the record some personality. But at the end, this didn't resonate with me.

Dre back in the spotlight dragging Snoop Dog with him on some tracks. Classic for a bit.

Fun album. Reminds me of high school. I played a lot of GTA listening to this.

Not a big West Coast hip hop fan. This had some great beats on it though, but not into the lyrics. Also so glad rap moved past the skits where the rapper is just making fake sex noises for a minute.

every song sounds the same

Great gangsta rap album

Some cool songs, but the next album has all the bangers, 3/5. Honorable mention for deez nuts

culturally significant but listening today it’s not necessarily the strongest by todays standards. Dre’s production is stellar, but Snoop has never really been an all time lyricist.
