Reviews (page 8 of 12)
Didn't realize how much Snoop was all over this album. The radio hits are pure high school nostalgia. Not a huge fan of the skits on rap and hip-hop albums, and this album is no different as they feel like unneeded filler because the producers realized how long they could make a record now that they weren't limited to run time with CDs. However, overall it was quite enjoyable with some innovative samples.
Maybe a 3 for this. Very single-minded lyrically - bitches, hos, guns, dick size, etc... without Snoop chiming in all over the place this would be a very different album
Lots of penis references. Dre is a mostly incompetent lyricist, and an even worse rapper. He relies on the presence and flow of Snoop far too much for me to recommend this aside from its importance as a cornerstone of the mainstream emergence of G-funk, for which I have a particular soft spot. Someone else could use these beats far better.
I was expecting an easy 5, but honestly this has aged badly. Still the era of sketches every other track, and while the production is great, lyrics are not amazing.
Important and influential, but not the style of Rap that I enjoy most. Directly responsible for the rising fame of Snoop Dogg and, by association, the continued cultural relevance of Martha Stewart.
Overall: 6/10 I honestly expected to like this more but it was just okay. The beats are fire for the most part but they start to seem similar after a while. A lot of the lyrics feel kind of primitive to me, with Dre's raps especially feeling outdated. Having Snoop on here was pretty genius as he has a unique voice and a lot of charisma. I don't feel this is on par with a lot of other 90's rap but it's still a good time. Fav Song: Lil' Ghetto Boy Least Fav Song: Let Me Ride
It was okay
This was pretty good. I know it's a cornerstone of gangster rap, but I'm just a little tiny boy from the orient, so I didn't grow up on it or anything.
Jeez 2 gangsta rap album in a row. This one's better cos the vibes and funk at the back is good. The MFunking lyrics are shite and neither Dre or Snoop are great rapsters.
solid
It is a 3.5. I really like most the tracks but need to skip the skits to enjoy listening from start to finish. Will put it on from time to time.
Solid opening, Snoop and RBX going hard, “Nothin’ But A “G” Thang” just an A+ song. Not suitable for all audiences, but that is absolutely the point.
i don’t love 90s rap but this was pretty solid
Yay I won the 20 dollar sack :)
As discussed, couldn’t separate art from the artist on this one :( would give a 1.5 lyrically but 3-4 for production and I’m feeling generous this morning so I’ll go with 3 overall
Hilarious to think that this album started the butterfly effect that led to Snoop chiefing with Martha Stewart. Despite that it’s not my favorite album from Dre or Snoop or this era, but it was fun to listen through and the beats go extremely hard. 2001 is way better and I hope it shows up on this list. Since there is better content for this artist and era I gotta stick with a strong 3
I can see all the bits and pieces here that make it an 80s, west coast classic, but I'm not listening to it for 75 minutes without getting honestly kind of bored. Also, the idea of the skit in rap albums was a terrible idea, and they're never any good.
It’s catchy, but the lyrics are dumb at best, and I really don’t like gangsta hip hop and rap. Snoop is just awesome though!
Not as clever as NWA or Ice Cube, but this still aged surprisingly well. It helps that Snoop Dogg is such a charismatic personality. It was a nice bit of dumb fun and I needed some cheering up today.
I'm a little torn on this one - a lot of the lyrics are gross and silly, but overall I really enjoy the sound. And Snoop is great. I think the parts I liked outnumber the parts I didn't, so I'll go with a 3 here.
Tough to rate, there are some great songs with really great, funky beats. Then there’s a lot that I would have left off the record (skits, sex recording again). I also don’t like Bitches Ain’t Shit
Dope
Engaging beat for most of album. Lyrics don't do anything for me. Curious how many songs I heard prior and assumed were snoop solely because he was the singer.
The sound is groovy but the lyrics have not aged well! I cringed.
So far, I've listened to every single album on this journey as background music to playing board games. Today was different. I listened to this while browsing properties on a small island belonging to Portugal...because I'm freaking tired of living in a country where I wake up every morning wondering what new shit show the day will provide. I was hoping this album was going to be more along the sentiment of "It Takes A Nation of Millions..." oh well. You'd probably have liver failure if you tried a drinking game where the trigger was any reference to "Death Row." The beats were definitely the highlight for me.
gangsta-rap .. nicht so meins. aber wirklich gut produziert und arrangiert - daher auch heute noch empfehlenswert und massstab.
This is so frustrating and disappointing because the production is absolutely spot on. You can really hear Dre's influence in a lot of later hip hop and rap. HOWEVER. Every damn song is about violence and nuts.
Very explicit and testosterone filled, but then again it's the early 90's rap scene. I liked the song "Nuthin' but a G Thang"
1992?! This album is more than 30 years old? Not possible. There are amazing grooves throughout, but the gangsta-ness gets tired quickly. The first half is great with Let Me Ride and Nuthin' But a "G" Thang standing out. The second half kind of drags except for Stranded on Death Row, Bushwick Bill! I'm pretty sure this is the OG of gangsta-funk. If it wasn't the first, than it's one often imitated. I prefer p-funk (like Digital Underground) to g-funk, but this is worth a listen.
gta san andreas vibes. bring back great memories, but a bit sexist.
Ok I’m gradually getting used to it
Definitely a must listen for fans of west coast rap, 90's rap and just the genre. The most frequent complaints I've seen are it has not aged well and, after listening, I'd have to agree. I'm sure this went hard in the day but it's not the most clever/artful lyricism or freshest sounding beats. I do understand it's importance to the genre and "nuthin' but a g ' thang" slaps.
I don’t like Dre and wasn’t vibing to the album. Had a beer and smoked a bowl while doing homework and put this on starting with deez nuts and was vibing to it a lot more
Cool beats!
Really disappointing. Not as hooky as doggystyle and not as fun. Oh well
This is not my favorite Dre album, but it's pretty good.
A good album that did not age very well.
Liked it more than I thought I would, still don’t really think it’s for me.
Not my usual cup of tea but it wasn’t bad
Go hip hop men för långt och töntiga skits
Objectively good album especially given cultural impact. love early snoop flow but g-funk rarely sparks joy. Some neat little production moments but more of an intellectual enjoyment than emotional
Fun album but gets a bit samey
An important part of history as the beginning of an amazing era of hip hop, but over time, this has fallen in the ranks for me.
Today I learned that "like we always do it this time" from Kanye's Good Life is a nod to The Chronic (intro) 🤯🤯🤯
It’s the year of our Lord 2025, and Snoop Dogg is now in every commercial, best friends with Martha Stewart, and announcing the Olympics.
It is a measure of just how influential this album is that listening to it now makes it sound like a parody or pisstake rip-off. The rhythms, the attitude, the production, the themes...oh god, the constant gangster lyrics.... it's seems almost comedy. (I kept thinking of Chris Morris playing as "Far-Q" on The Day Today.) And how many F'ing MFer does one album need? An important album, but I didn't enjoy it this time.
Great synthy beats, 90s hip hop always hypes me up.
Вау вау вау епие епией это не скали милано а отсюдова
A classic, just not by thing. Found it interesting that he ended with “bitches ain’t shit,” which I’ve decided to interpret as a sign of female power and his insecurities X rather than how it was probably intended.
• 3/5 • Love the G-Funk sound; appreciate the flow and delivery of the lyrics (especially by Snoop); don’t like the lyrics at all
An important record no doubt but struggled to connect much any of it.
love. deez nuts and my lil ghetto boiii 🤌🏼
Always felt that, while the production is fantastic, I had a hard time getting past some of the dated viewpoints and rhyme styles on this album. And the skits are a lot. That said, again, the beats... Fav Tracks: Nothin' But a "G" Thang
point1.
Undeniably important in establishing music for the next 15 years. The beats and rhythm are fantastic. Snoop Dogg, RBX, and Dre are fantastic. Definitely dated today with the homophobia and misogyny and everything Dre has done, but from a musical perspective, still solid. Not my style, and some of these songs are rough ("The Day the Niggaz Took Over") but good.
A classic of its time, defining an era of hip-hop - but all these years on, it is a tiring listen by the time you reach the end, no light and shade, lots of banging beats and bragadoccio
Good. 3/5
Good for its time, but I don’t think it really holds up anymore. I liked Chronic 2001 more
Couple classics and the rest was forgettable.
Was never the biggest fan of the Chronic and 33 years on my opinion is much the same Dre can’t rap but the beats slap. Undeniable classic but maybe not aged very wel
There were some strong tracks but not really our thing.
Classics
It's a classic, but doesn't do much for me as a whole, outside beats and sampling. Couple tracks rise way above the rest, Snoop in the house indeed, but most of the gangsta stuff was and is quite tiresome.
It makes sense from a music history perspective that Dr. Dre would have an inclusion here; he was a very successful solo member from N.W.A who would go on to be paramount in helping to set the blueprint for 90s hip-hop and rap. Additionally, he would go on to be critical in discovering and or launching many hip-hop and rap careers for big names. All that said, this album is interesting to listen to. It takes a lot of the early 90s rap sounds and elevates it. While the work of N.W.A did initially have quite a part in creating the blueprint for 90s rap and beyond, Dr. Dre's solo work definitely perfected that blueprint. Anyway, this album sounds surprisingly fresh, something not easily achieved with 30+ year old rap. As far as 90s rap goes, it's also on the less problematic side (though it's still there).
-waow it is Dr. Dre… I don’t think I’ve ever really sat down and listened to a single song by him. that all changed now. I liked it I think… maybe more enjoyable as a full album experience, with some exceptions there weren’t many tracks I picked out that I could play as standalones. some were REALLY good though holy shit -Favorites are The Day The Niggaz Took Over, A Nigga Witta Gun, and Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat
Also mir isch e grosses stuck nostalgie ufcho bi dem name. Aber au e wahrschindli berechtigti angst, öb mir de old school rap na öpis gid, i doubt it. Aber this is not the real neduzen. Tres puntos
ai de g funk isch back mit de klassische tön wies furz piano oder high pitched wistle thingy - alles sehr altbekannti weggfährte bin selber ja en grosse fan vo gsi vo albe wie "last meal", aber da lihr widermals problem so wies usgseht bini da scho ziemlich usegwachse und asoziiere da meh irgendwelchi 14 jährigi kiffer us sirnach demit wo chli zfest dure sind und sich das züg usem handyspeaker am bhf ineziend mit neongrüene trainerhose und am beste no di zensiert version wo gfühlt dhelfti vo de lyrics fehlt wasmer aber sege mues isch das die albe doch immer en gsunde ahteil ah humor hend da nimmi 3 mal en tüüfe zug vom güff und seg "smami chunt!"
It was alright
DNF'ed. Not my cup of tea in the slightest. Some tracks were okay to listen to but I will not be revisiting this one.
“Classic” rap album. As a young man when it came out it was fresh and new for the time. As an older man, some of it feels like “why am I listening to this” 1001 album worthy: yes - 11/20
In the 90s, this was probably the shit. But time hasn't been kind to The Chronic. The skits aren't the worst that I've ever heard, but they're still not good. There are sprinkles of that classic 90s sound that I just really don't like. Snoop appears so often that this may as well be a Dre and Snoop album. And the content is just... too much sex. And not in a particularly good or interesting way. bleh. It's good. There's plenty of musical skill involved, and if you're good at ignoring lyrics and skipping skits, it's a really fun listen. But music, including Dr. Dre's own, has gotten to a better place since this released. Influential? Sure. Something you need to listen to today? Maybe not. Favorite Song(s): Nothing But A "G" Thang, Lyrical Gangbang
2.5/5 It’s an album with lots of attitude and an engaging atmosphere. The production is slick but there are too many songs don’t go anywhere, resulting in an album that is bloated and repetitive at times.
Read other people's reviews for all the comments your need about great beats and production(four stars) but dated violent and misogynistic lyrics (back down to two). Plus one star for not being an album by 3-5 white guys in 1967. Three stars.
5/10 It isn't the albums fault that it now sounds like a parody of mid nineties gangsta rap, but I can't take it seriously. That's how it goes some times
A bit bloated and the skits are not that entertaining, but definitely more than a handful of solid to really good tracks here. 6/10
Solid3/10
Heard it before - good album. Love snoop on this
Not a big rap fan but it was fun to listen to. Found out that I do like Snoop Dogg. He had a couple of the best tracks.
5 seconds in and I'm reminded of how afraid parents were of Snoop back in the day. Definitely not the friendly cartoon character he is today. It's crazy how important this album is in the history of American music and there are long sections dedicated to making fun of Easy E. Is this a Dre album or a Snoop album?
I'm a bad judge of hip hop. This was enjoyable, cool to hear early Snoop. 3*
3+
Liked it more than I thought I would
3 out of 5. This album is a party.
Lotta snoop doggy dog, and a lotta lady of rage (tho I don’t know who she is),There’s great songs but a whole hour of this stuff isn’t easy, I’ve just realised that 90% of the time I just prefer rap groups to solo rappers and when I like solo rappers the albums I prefer from them are the more concise efforts. The most striking track on the album was the $20 sack pyramid and I was just like… eew. Stranded on death row was also good. I think the album’s a 3/5
Not a big rap fan
Best track: lil ghetto boy A few skips
God rytme, var med garanti en historie gennen albummet, jeg ikke hørte, svært st lytte til lyric første lyt
I don’t necessarily have that much nostalgia for dr Dre or the chronic so I can’t really say I absolutely loved this album or anything. Obviously a lot of recognizable songs on here and classic beats/riffs which I do appreciate. Also shoutout to Ben folds cover of bitches ain’t shit, I forget how truly filthy that song is, hahaha.
The album is full of hot beats and a young Dogg, but that’s it. Dre is obviously an awesome producer, but he’s never been a great rapper. I could put a couple of songs from this on an old gangsta rap playlist, but that’s really the only niche it fills. Reflecting on it, especially when I was in my prime rap listening time as a teenager, this should have been right up my alley. I’ve just never actually liked it that much. Kinda similar to Wu Tang. The actual music never lived up to the hype. For West Coast rap, I pretty much exclusively liked Tupac up until Kendrick/YG/Dom Kennedy. With all of that in mind, there are still hits and I enjoyed this more than a lot of albums on the list thus far. 3 stars!
There may not be too many hits on this one but it’s a solid listen, especially sitting in traffic with the windows down. It’s really cool to listen to an album that will play a part in changing modern rap music and Dr. Dre introducing legends in the game. I also appreciated the lack of skits on this album, I don’t know why that became a trend. There are better rap albums on this list, but I was very close to giving it a four.
I can respect the influence this album had on rap, but it's not really for me. There were a couple songs I recognized and few others I thought were good. I listened to this on Friday, and didn't think about it once over the weekend.
Dated? Yes. Solid. Yes. More curse words than I remember? Yes. My favorite part is that Snoop is now like a fun Grandpa.
This album was a bit before my time, so it wasn't something I was familiar with. I did know 2 songs though It was a bit too long, and a lot of these songs did sound very repetitive! Wasn't bad, just repetitive. I much prefer the later Dr. Dre stuff 3 ⭐️
Not really the type of rap I usually listen to, but a good chunk of it is pretty enjoyable. I did find a few of the tracks to be pure earrape, however. Best song: Lil' Ghetto Boy / Nuthin' But a "G" Thang Worst song: The Chronic (Intro) / High Powered
A milestone in hip hop, and the production holds to this day. The G-Funk beats are so smooth and such a vibe. Unfortunately a lot of the themes in the songs have aged very bad, and the album is too long. Best song: Let Me Ride Worst song (excluding skits): Lyrical Gangbang
Not gonna pretend I can relate to 90s rap. But that synth whistle is one of the coolest sounds in music, no question
Some great stuff here (eg Nuthin but a G Thang is so goddamn fun), but a lot that I don't love (most of the others I hadn't heard before). Maybe when I was an aggro teenager I would have vibed more with this, but a lot of this and other gangsta rap is too serious for me. My favorite parts of this album were wherever Snoop was on the mic, so what I really want is to listen to Doggystyle again. Also too many skits (any number of skits is too many skits).
Knew G Thang and Bitches Ain’t Shit (probably heard the Ben Folds cover more than the original). Enjoyed Lyrical Gangbang as new track to me. Great production quality and some more interesting backing tracks than other stuff from the era. Overall thought this was kind of lame though and not as fun as Snoop or the other 90s rap. Snoop really carried a lot of these songs.
snoop doggy dog
听着好累
Not my taste in tunes, although I did find myself grooving at a few songs. Historically interesting content, but I can do without the explicit lyrics.
I loved the N.W.A. album and my enjoyment of hip hop has grown per the years and I like this album but there are better hip hop albums out there. Worth a listen but nothing mind blowing.
Classic hip hop album but isn’t something I’ll probably listen to again.
Classic album with a few hits. There are a number songs I wasn’t familiar with
This album is essential in west coast culture. Even though it marks the debut of one of the greatest, both Dre and Snoop have better records. This album is way too long for my liking, and the lyrics' theme is repetitive, but I get why though. Doesn't mean that it is bad.
If you can get past the typical hip hop dick swinging, and this album is filled with it to the point of being certifiably pornographic, there is a lot of musicality to like on the album. I found it very listenable and well produced. Little Ghetto Boy was probably my favorite although its a sad punch to the gut of Ghetto reality. Is that Ron Burgundy on the Jazz flute?
I'm sure I would give it a higher rating if I could connect more to gang violence and having sexual intercourse. Anyway, it's a milestone for Dre and for Hip-Hop in general, can't deny that.
9/25/24. Iconic rap album for sure. As much as I enjoyed it, I did think it was a bit repetitive and the samples used are just okay. However, that's just me. Still a great album.
maybe hasn't aged very well...but still a lot of bangers
Like this one more than I thought I would. I want to love it, but some of the language and some of the thieves are cringe worthy to me.
Melhores músicas: The Chronic (Intro), Fuck Wit Dre Day (And Everybody's Celebratin'), Nuthin' But A "G" Thang, High Powered, Stranded On Death Row, The Roach (The Chronic Outro). Piores músicas: The $20 Sack Pyramid, The Doctor's Office, Bitches Ain't Shit. 2.5/5
Some great tracks
A great energy and insight into the world of the great doctor
Dre pakt me gewoon nooit zo. Doe mij aar doggystyle
I feel like snoop dog makes listening to Dr Dre better but I'm not sure if Dr Dre makes listening to snoop dog better. Another extremely 90s album -the funk hip-hop mix makes easy listening.
Nuthin but a G Thang - so many classics! The rest of the album wasn't as good as this track, but still a lot of West Coast rap figures!
Was good at times, but thought I'd enjoy it more.
I enjoyed this more than I expected. Dr. Dre's shtick outside of music generally grates on my nerves, so I never tried listening to his music. I've heard bits over the years which was fine, but I never sought him out or listened to an album until this one. Lyrically, I'm not sold, but rhythmically and musically, this was fantastic. I will re-listen.
Taking out that "Bitches ain't shit" just hasn't aged well, the album is one of the quintessential ganster albums of the 90's. Dre's production still slaps. Nothing But A "G" Thang is the only track that I really love on the album, so I can't give it anything higher than a 3/5.
The good doctor here, with superb vocal flow, but unfortunately extremely dated lyrical references that made this a tough listen. He's clearly vital in the development of modern hip hop and rap, but these woke ears are curling up in horror a lot of the time
It’s yet another gangsta rap album, but this time it’s a seminal one. Instrumental to the genre, without this we wouldn’t have the rap that we have today, and that means it must do some things right. It does. It ticks all of the boxes to make a rap album, complete with those weird interludes that always seem to crop up. Despite the lyricism (which is not to be overlooked), this can genuinely be relaxing, what with the incredible sampling and steady flow of Dre, Snoop Dogg and other guest artists. Even beside its significance in the genre, it is a heavyweight by itself.
First time listen. Now I see where Eminem came from.
The thing about this album is that while it is very influential, it also doesn’t hold up as well as some of the other albums made around this time. I never disliked it (outside of the doctor’s office skit, which has no discernible reason for existing and just made me uncomfortable), but I feel like 3 stars is good for an important album that isn’t as good as others.
Where are the woke people when you need them? Instead of trying to rewrite Agatha Christie books, they should focus on this album. Irony off.
I like this old school rap. It's not my go-to for daily listening, but it's fun.
I really enjoy this, but only one song at a time. And maybe I don’t listen too closely to the lyrics.
Not relatable
Good music, good delivery, good features.
It's fine but I don't love Dr. Dre music as much as other collaborations he has done. The beats and instrumentation for this album is cool.
Filthy and completely unrelated for me. I recognize many if the songs from my youth, but ew… this is not nor will ever be something I love.
Libero, schietto. Le basi sono godibilissime anche ai profani del genere (come me), l'atmosfera distesa e intima, la produzione tanta roba. OVVIO straborda di misoginia e omofobia etc. Infatti si ascolta, mica si mette in pratica.
Weirdly enough, I got this and then watched Snoop and Dre perform one of these tracks in the closing ceremony of the Olympics. Testimony to the staying power of this music I guess? Which is weird considering how weirdly dated a lot of the content is. There are some great bits of production here and I laughed at the skits but it's definitely bloated and quite crass.
Great beats and production. This was never my kind of thing back in the 90s but i've come to appreciate it in recent years.
No. 231/1001 The Chronic (Intro) 2/5 Fuck Wir Dre Day 3/5 Let Me Ride 4/5 The Day The Niggaz Took Over 2/5 Nothin But A G Thang 5/5 Deeez Nuts 3/5 Lil Ghetto Boy 3/5 A Nigga Wit A Gun 3/5 Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat 2/5 The 20$ Sack Pyramid 1/5 Lyrical Gangbang 3/5 High Powered 2/5 The Doctor's Office 1/5 Stranded On Death Row 3/5 The Roach 3/5 Bitches Ain't Shit 3/5 Average: 2,69 Way too long, with some really cringy songs.
the chronic- 6 merely for "sincerely yours, these motherfucking nuts" fuck wit dre day- reminds me of the minecraft creeper rap💀idk maybe 5 let me ride- i like the chorus the rest is a mite bit boring the day the n took over- 7 or 8 nuthin but a g thang- 4 or 5 tbh deez nuts- oh. the thing about this song is that its not very good. 4 lil ghetto boy- 7 a n witta gun- what did he do. 7 rat tat tat tat- 6 or 7 20$ sack pyramid- what. dunno how to rate this. " GIMME MY MOTHERFUCKIN WEED" lyrical gang bang- :I 5 high powered- 5 doctors office- ... stranded on death row- 5 the roach- 6 or 7. the chorus is so good bitches aint shit- i love misogyny. 3 or 4 favorite track- the day the n took over or the roach
First listen I tried... not as many hits as 2001.
I’ve never been a huge fan of Dre but this really won me over with just how breezy the whole album is. Fun bouncy production throughout is the key for me
Propper Hip-Hop.
3.5 Immaculate vibes. Loved the features, although it featured very little Dr. Dre for a Dr. Dre album!
This one was High Powered.
Ah shit, here we go again. Worst place in the world, Rolling Heights Ballas country. I ain't represented Grove Street in 5 years, but the Ballas won't give a shit.
3/5
I have never listened to the whole album and should have a long time ago. It has elements of Superfly-raw but is also fun and full of unexpected twists and turns. On the flip side, the misogyny is typical, boring, and detracts from the message. I could go on here, but I don't think it's necessary.
Influential. Sure. Also a little repetitive not only on its sound but in the subject matter (including too much misogyny for my delicate sensibilities). I get it. The streets are tough the there are needs to be settled. I much prefer the Pharcyde's debut released the same year which adds humor in to its view of growing up in LA. Heck - even NWA had a touch of humor mixed with the rage. That being said - great beats and production throughout. Some skilled delivery. I was a just a list alienated after 60 minutes.
3.4 - I think the 2nd half was more my jam
Well… it was enjoyable to listen to it, more enjoyable than I thought actually. I like the beats, his voice is also not too aggravating or annoying, i think he has a really good voice. The themes of the songs do get a bit… repeated which might make it less unique and enjoyable. But the vibes are there. 6.8/10
it's obviously very influential but i personally didn't get much out of it beyond nostalgic recognizing of samples
not really my thing anymore but there were some funny lines
This is a difficult album to rate because on one hand it is hugely influential and the rap game wouldn't be the same without it. On the other hand the majority of the tracks on here are really not good and don't hold up today. I guess this gets a 3 based solely on its influence.
Nah, standard rap, pretty boring
I admit this is not my style of music but it’s one of the better rap albums that’s come up on this list so far. I have no idea if its decent in terms of the genre, but I didn’t hate it so that’s something!
Hip hop isn't really my thing, but I enjoyed bits of this more than I expected.
I had high hopes for this album and was let down a little bit. Not bad just not as great as I pictured.
Always great to go back and listen to the beginning of the Death Row music empire.
That's not my taste in musik. But ok. Nice songs
Great beats, but the lyrics have not aged well
- schön beim Ballen in der Sonne gehört, war absolut nice dadurch und die Wertung fällt dadurch etwas höher aus, als sie es sonst würde (könnte ich mir jedenfalls so denken)
i listened to this before, and my opinion remains pretty much the same after a relisten. this album is very front loaded imo. it has a pretty good track run (excluding intro track) from the start to lil ghetto boy, then it goes downhill from there. i think the album goes on too long from here and couldve went without some of the tracks on the back half; just got so boring that listening became a chore getting through it. i give this a 3.5 like my prior listen, but leaning towards 3 due to this rating system. 3 personal favs: fuck with dre day, let me ride
Deez Nutz!
Well produced, smooth rap vocals, cool beats and samples, plus bonus points for introducing Snoop. But the lyrics are rough at times
A little dated but alright listening
not rly my vibe
good
Definite classic songs on here. Also is the introduction of Snoop Dogg, and where Dre really popularized west coast gfunk. But overall the album sounds a bit dated.
This album does a pretty good job telling stories through its songs and in-between bits, which I always appreciate.
I aknowledge that this is good and all — its just not my thang.
Classic
Obviously a classic and important album with some 90's bangers in it. Listening to it brought me back. The songs - their sound, the nostalgia I feel for them, and their important role in bringing black art to the forefront of popularity and so to wide masses - are important and powerful. I was also reminded of how performatively masculine, misogynistic, and repetitive the lyrics are. I've never loved that aspect and am excited for every moment gangsta rap breaks free from that to speak honestly and powerfully about life experiences...
One of the only tolerable gangsta rap albums. The misogynistic side gets a bit tiring, but the beats are actually pretty decent and some of the lyrics are clever. Could be a lot shorter and a better if the crap was cut. 3.5*
Lil'Ghetto boy is the most interesting produced one IMO. 10 track wack. The soundscape overall great and highly influential, the lyrics can stay there. Not here for the skits, produce the opposite of what he's trying to portray
I am not really into rap but I really appreciated this album and the racial, political and socio-economic commentary throughout it. I know it has been sampled to death cause there are so many parts I recognised. Really glad I listened to it.
knocked off points for the sex sounds i hate when somgs have ts 😭
3 due to its influence and allusions, it belongs in the list. But the aging, like many albums, has been a bit rough.
Classic, but doesn't bop or age as well as I would have thought.
Solid 90's hip hop. Nothing more and nothing less. Some iconic songs here, though.
I've never listened to this album before, and thanks to it being turned into an NFT (thanks, Snoop!), I had to go to YouTube to listen to it. I'm pretty sure I tried to listen to this several years ago, but it wasn't on streaming, so I just never bothered tracking it down. Anyway, moving on. I really expected to be blown away by this album, due to all the hype that it gets, but it turned out to just be okay. The beats are easily the best part of this album. The g-funk sound that Snoop and Dre established on this album would become one of the most influential elements in the history of hip-hop. I loved the use of synthesizers on this album, and it really gave this album a laid-back, easy feeling. I didn't find the rapping on this album to be anything great, and for the most part, only a couple of songs really stood out to me lyrically: "The Day the N***** Took Over" and "Lil' Ghetto Boy" were two of the best songs on the album, and their social commentary really made them stand out. "Nothin' but a 'G' Thang" was really good too, and its sound has become the shining example of west coast hip hop in the nineties. Yes, this album contains plenty of misogyny and homophobia, but that seems to be the norm for a lot of hip hop from this era unfortunately. It doesn't make it right, but it is what is. Also, I think Dre is scumbag, given his long history of violence towards women. I enjoyed this album's sound, and I appreciate its influence, but it's not something I'd come back to.
Was expecting more for such an iconic album
I know how important this album is to hip-hop. But it sounds way too aged now, and covers every cliché of the genre. I didn't realize how heavily Snoop was featured on this album, so that was a nice surprise. The sampling is often great. But it just doesn't stand the test of time in my opinion -- especially lyrically, where it is downright offensive. Got a good laugh at hearing "deez nuts" almost 25 years before I assumed it was popularized.
This is one of the albums that made me dislike West Coast Hip Hop for a long time. I just wasn't into the sound, the rapping style, or much of the content. Even though East Coast and Southern Hip Hop had a lot of similar content, it also mixed in other topics I found more appealing. Listening to it, now, I do like it more, as I have, for a while, started to appreciate West Coast Rap more. However, I still wouldn't choose to listen to this over many other Hip Hop/Rap albums.
Decent. I don't listen to much hip-hop, so found this okayish.
Lyrics did not age well even though they do flow pretty well. The beats were pretty sick.
Yeah, the beats are alright, and Snoop has flow, but damn if that ain't some misogynistic bullshit.
3.5/5
7/10
The 20$ sack pyramid is hilarious
Good album.
great production value. heavy parliament/funkadelic influences. this album was dr. dre’s official transition into a household name in the gangster rap community as a solo artist. having said all that, the album does fall prey into what many gangster rap albums do… an endless sea of “n-words”, use of the word “motherfucker” and its various iterations. perhaps most of all, constant mentions of “dre”, by either the artist himself or other fellow rappers throughout the album. it becomes tiresome, to be honest. other than that, solid effort, but these things do heavily detract from the overall product.
Honestly iconic sound just felt goofy for me to be listening to west coast 90s rap. Some skits and songs were forgettable but snoop dog carried and the beats are all great
I used to really like this album but it hasn’t aged particularly well.
Classic
Of the rap I’ve had so far, I musically enjoyed this one the most - although still have the same issues with the misogyny and immaturity.
Not my fav genre, kinda fun but just background noise for me
Some decent songs but too many skits. Dre seems a particularly bad offender for sex skits too
Some tracks ok but i find it is like a novelty record. Not a fan of the weird interludes with sex noises...
Dre hitting it out of the park with Snoop. Quite the sing along album. I know more about his success than I should. Saw the specials and movies etc. Dr. knows how to operate.
3.3 stars rounded down. The singles, "Fuck wit Dre Day (And Everybody's Celebratin')", "Let me ride", and "Nuthin' But a "G" Thang" are the stand out tracks. Good beats, but full of repetitively cartoonish insults that veer from homophobia to homoerotic. Both this album and Snoop Dogg's "Doggystyle" are full of tracks with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg expounding on the many ways they will fuck their enemies first. But the later "Doggystyle" sounds calm and menacing while "The Chronic" sounds angry, worked up and hostile. I prefer the Snoop album where the rage is a bit more sublimated, and the tone a bit sillier.
Once again, hip hop is not my jam but I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The beats were fun. Wish I paid more attention to some of the lyrics but I find a lot of the dialogue super cheesy...
My man said the n word in the intro so many times I thought he was Mexican for a sec (until he pronounced ask like axe). Anyway first time listening to something by Dr. Dre, I honestly can't say I fucked with it too much (sorry MLK Jr), just not my type of music. It was well produced and I can understand its impact on hip-hop and especially gangster rap so I get why it's on the list, but I don't like this album too too much. That being said, some of the songs were a vibe and nothing really killed it so I still enjoyed. 3/5. Favourites: ending of Fuck Wit Dre Day (etc.) ending because it was funny, Nuthin' But A "G" Thang, Bitches Ain't Shit.
relisten. great record, it was nice to revisit it. its not my favourite Dre album tho.
Snoop holding it down
I thought initially that I would like this a lot.... I was wrong I really did not like this album. Sounds very dated and most of the songs get muddled together. I can appreciate what this album did for rap but I don't see myself revisiting this album anytime soon
Okay.
There is no doubt that this is a landmark album that shifted the landscape of hip hop. I never really was super into it growing up, and revisiting it now I don't think my feelings have changed. There are some all-timer songs here, but also a lot of relatively uninteresting stuff mixed in.
good but not for me
lots of nuts
Pass, will listen on CD at some point
Oh shit! Ghostface followed by Dre!? East coast vs west coast!? Not that Wu-Tang ever really got mixed up in that BS. But you definitely have two styles going on between the two records. For my money, the stuff from the home of hip hop is preferable to west coast gangsta. Like NWA, this album landed better for me when I was a teenager. It doesn’t scratch the same itch as it maybe once did for me, and frankly I’m not sure how much of this I need in my life. And frankly, of all the things Dr. Dre is known for, I think rapping is the thing he is least good at. So give me Ghostface, Nas, or Biggie any day over this album. Still - important for the evolution of the genre. 3.5/5.
Seminal hip hop. A little over heavy on the ego, guns and felatio for my taste but paved the way for Snoop and G-funk.
Exactly what I expected.
Muy buenas bases y dos íconos del hip hop...y eso.
You know the 4-5 worthwhile songs on here by heart probably, everything else is caked with so much filler, that as an album this is wayyyy too bloated to actually be great. It's influence can't be understated and it gave us Snoop Doggy Dogg, but 2001 even though its also bloated has a greater ratio of hits to duds
No denying how influential this album was. The beats are dope. Snoop Dogg raps are on point. But the lyrics are really dated and Dre is far too hung up on Easy-E which is a shame. Still a decent album overall.
Light 7
this album is kinda funky, I dig it -I enjoyed listening to this, had no desire to skip or turn it off but don’t know when I’ll seek it out again -I imagine this is incredibly significant for black culture and a lot of things are beyond my comprehension -that one part was basically porn
u's a penguin-lookin mf . yeah. whatever th that means. deeezzz nuuuts 3.6/5
Crazy how many samples were taken from this. Ready to die by NBIG was a 4, this is a 3
Dr. Dre….
Favorite Tracks: Lyrical Gangbang Nuthin’ But A “G” Thang Fuck With Dre Day (And Everybody’s Celebratin’)
A couple of nice ones, in the end it's just gangster rap
Its alright, but its not the optimal album of the genre. Just how many songs about looting can you put on one album?
Damn, that was suprisingly good. Approachable and entertaining. I got a lot out of it. Mostly swearing and the N word, but apart from that, oh, drugs, and aggression, but apart from that ....well, not much more.. Bitches..yeah, I got that as well..and that's it. That's all I got. 3 stars.
This really is one of the cornerstones of hip hop. I knew far more songs on here than I expected, which says everything about how influential this album has been. Musically, the production is superb. The beats are smooth, heavy and instantly recognisable. That G funk sound is laid back but powerful, and it still sounds great today. Nuthin’ but a G Thang in particular is a standout. It is effortlessly cool and easily the highlight for me. That said, some of the lyrics feel dated now and, in places, uncomfortable by today’s standards. While I can appreciate the cultural impact and context of the early nineties, certain themes and lines do not sit well decades later. Overall, I enjoyed it more than I expected. The production alone makes it worth hearing, even if parts of the content have not aged as well. Favourite song: Nuthin’ but a G Thang Least favourite: Some tracks feel lyrically dated Album artwork: Iconic and instantly recognisable, fitting for such an important record
Stand Outs Lyrical Gangbang The Roach
Great album, and the recording of actual instruments? Practically unheard of. Classic album.
The deep cuts on this one didn't really do much for me. I don't have a great perspective on what this album meant for hip hop on a greater level. It sounds pretty generic to me know which is maybe a testament to how influential it was at the time. The high pitched hook maker wore on me after a while. Having said that, the bangers on this are absolute bangers. 3.5, would not buy on vinyl.
The beats on this album are strong, and it is extremely influential on rap music. However the lyrics are lacking, Dre's rapping never did it for me, and I've always felt like Doggystyle and a host of other albums iterated and surpassed it over the years. It's worth a listen for the beats and the history, but I don't find myself wanting to play it again outside of a small number of tracks.
I thought this album was solid and a couple of the tracks have had multiple plays in the rotation over here. Not something I would listen to repetitively but definitely an album that set a standard of art to come from Dre.
ok but not massively my bag
I was already familiar with Nuthin But A G Thang, and turns out the rest of the album carries the same vibe. Not entirely my thing but I dig it well enough. WEST COAST!
Too much "language" for me
Didn’t make like much of this. A few classics.
Bueno
This album is a classic, with a couple of the most iconic 90s rap songs on it... but... when you actually sit and listen to it all the way through, it's got way more misses than hits.
Was excited to listen to this album for the first time in a long time. It wasn’t as good as I remember. There are some classics on there, but also some duds.
Not for me but recognize the importance. Loved the Snoop contributions.
This is the quintessential sound of any GTA game based in the west coast. Highlight for me is the clean sampling in the production, the beats were clearly made to blow out the low-end of boomboxes and car radios. This sound is totally made for cruising in a convertible
It’s a journey.
Decent but the next one is better.
not for me
Bloated, overlong, lyrics that were problematic at the time (never mind not aging well...), on the other hand, marks the birth of the G-funk era, and Nuthing but a G Thang is a song for the ages. 2001 is miles better tho.
Cool, aber Rap
klassieke west coast hiphop, met veel cameos van Snoop Dogg. Blijft niet mijn stijl, maar de beats en flows zijn goed.
It’s hard to set aside the lore and legend that comes with an album that changed the game. However, it’s easy to just be critical of a gangster-rap album for being a collection of contrived, mediocre rap about killing and fucking bitches. I understand it’s a reflection of culture and an incredibly important portrayal of LA life. Some of the beats are pretty tight, tho.
In 1992 I was listening to grunge. And probably 70s rock. I was in no way the demographic, target audience, or even considering 'gangster rap'. I like and appreciate rap, hip hop, the whole deal. I don't hold a connection to this album, though, because different times and places. I respect what it meant for the scene and genre, and the ground that it broke. It just doesn't resonate as strongly with me on a personal level.
This was game changing at the time. Lyrical content seems a little sophmoric now.
I like how silly it is but some of it is too much. The beats and lyrics are entertaining though
Solid effort but its not NWA. Ill take a pass on the snoop dog stuff
I don’t understand the appeal of this at all.
Not to be contrarian, this is an okay hip-hop album, but Gangsta rap is sorta overrated in my opinion. I think there's some progressive Early 90s era albums that are more deserving of a place on this list - A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul etc - but opinions are like bumholes, everyone's got one and they're probably full of shit most of the time!
Vibey but very repetitive.
It's not actually as good as I remember it being.
It was okay. Some good songs. Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it.
A classic of rap, but this specific 90s style doesn't click with me very well
3/5
Classic West-Coast rap, everyone knows. The sound is great. Very layered. That said, the skits are for the most part best left in the past. Some of the lyrics can stay there, too. The biggest hits though are still great. Fav Tracks: The Day..., Nuthin' But A "G" Thang, Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat Worst Skit: The Doctor's Office
I prefer my hip-hop more lyrical.
Honestly gave me a bit of a chuckle at times, I don't rly listen to this sort of music but I did dig the style.
pushender Hiphop, manchmal aber gerade deshalb auch nervig
3 Very very influential but unfortunately it's never properly stuck with me. Fave songs: Fuck Wit Dre Day, Deeez Nuuuts,
sadly didn’t listen, still dealing with mom stuff
2.75
Love the G-funk sound, it has a certain badass yet laidback feeling that just hits right. Although it’s a great sound, I don’t want to listen to it for an hour straight. Could have used a little variation. Also could have put Snoop on the album cover; I swear he has more bars on this record than Dre.
Disappointing considering I love so much of his other work, most of this albums is actually just fine at sone points it’s actually tedious. There’s one great song but The rest is just kind of bad.Snoop dogs Album is actually much better.
Good melodic rap!
"А эти смотри ублюдки-мазафакеры Под свой вонючий g-funk в них тыркают палками" Ну по музыке кайф, а по наполнению и смыслу - ну говно прямо. Я видать интеллигент.
It’s rough and raw with smooth beats. A classic west coast album.
Overrated album, but still good
This album is notable primarily for its music. It is a fantastic g-funk statement and features the classic synth that is associated with west coast gangsta rap. However, without Ice Cube, the lyrics lose much of the purpose. Gone is the biting social commentary in favor of causeless violence and juvenile posturing. Strangely enough, Dr. Dre isn't even the best rapper on this album. Snoop Dogg does much of the heavy lifting and his parts are the most memorable. Still, this album is a classic and the music alone justifies its inclusion on this list.
Don’t listen with kids about 😂
3.5/5
I love the funky style of rap the Dre was making back then. This album focuses a bit too much on "suck my nuts, I got a gun". Also I feel like Snoop raps as much or more than Dre on this one. The skits were terrible on this one.
2.5
If indo is Snoop’s drug of choice, a Glock is Dre’s.
Ja wel dik maar niet zo bijzonder vind ik. Vooral snoop dogg moker droog hier. Wel lekkere GTA San Andreas deuntjes
Bitches are shit, I have proof
Whooo, This was really out of my usual, but kinda enjoyed it briefly. Big black guys rapping is just powerful. But the songs were pretty non creative and entirely unrelatable for me.
Lot of variety, good flows and catchy songs. Not a fan of the genre but for 1992 I’m sure it blew everything else out of the water.
It's... okay. The songs drag on a little.
Nice beats and skills but not my favourite subject matter for lyrics
Ya 2-3 musiques bien mais le pb c'est que tt les musiques ont une instru qui fait tt le temps la même chose c'est redondant
I was disappointed in this. It’s held up as one of the all time greats but most of it is pretty lacklustre and the production doesn’t compare to what he did later. That being said, there was three great tracks on there, however not names I wish to write out or sing along to.
The beats are great. The vibes are good. The lyrical themes are, at this point, pretty tired. A classic for its time, very influential, and still very listenable but not very captivating.
Most of the beats are really catchy, but some I didn't really like. Lots of skits that are kind of weird but funny? I did not realize deez nuts was a thing 30+ years ago. Favorite(s): Let Me Ride, Nuthin' But A "G" Thang, Lil' Ghetto Boy, Lyrical Gangbang, The Roach
Suburban white kid anthems
Iconic rap. I just don't love rap in general as much as Kyle haha
That's the first time I've appreciated a part of a rap album. What a change! "Nuthin' But A "G" Thang" has a nice vibe. The whole album is too long tho. And come on... those lyrics? Nah 3.5/5
Another classic. I prefer "forgot about dre" but this one is still worthy to be on this list.
To quote a Youtuber, "Did Dr. Dre have to spend the entirety of The Chronic telling Eazy-E to eat a dick?"
Jess and I listened to this album the last night of our time in New Orleans. We didn’t listen as closely as we might have, but I think it influenced the timbre of the evening in exactly the way one hopes.
Musically pretty great, but lyrically just the same old gangsta crap. Sorry but guns aren’t THAT cool.
Good. Misogynistic lyrics though. Good thing the artist have grown as people since then.
Good beats but tough to listen to lyrics
Great album, but not my style so moch. Great introduction to the genre!
Ajan räpin parhaasta päästä pikku yhden sormen synamelodioineen ja ei niin kantaaottavine sanoituksineen (ei painavaa).
Some classics, but suffers from same problem as most rap albums - SO LONG.
Favourite songs: Nuthin' But A "G" Thang, Fuck Wit Dre Day (And Everybody's Celebratin'), Lil' Ghetto Boy, The Day The Niggaz Took Over, Let Me Ride, Deeez Nuuuts Least favourite songs: The Chronic - Intro, The $20 Sack Pyramid, The Doctor's Office (who needs a 1 minute skit about two people fucking?) 3/5
Beats and flows are good. Lyrics are distractingly violent and explicit.
