Feels like mall music pretty ok
Van Halen is a band I always think it going to be so much harder than they are, and for me that is good. To me there is something fantasy or mystical to their music, its like you are always in the clouds and everyone is dressed in silver or gold flowing gowns. Yet they can rock a guitar and write a catchy song that makes you dance and sing along.
I've never understood why we are singing "Panama". Is this a song about a hot chick from Panama? Are all the songs about hot chicks? No, some of them are about jumping. Okay. Whatever. This is a great album. Don't over think it. It's only Rock n Roll. The hits are pretty overplayed for me but they are still great rock songs. I'll Wait is my favorite song on the album and you can really hear the Van Hager sound that they will grow into.
This album is super fun. Lots of guitar shredding. Love Jump and its intro, and there are a few other rockin’ classics on here too. The non-hits kinda lost me, but overall it was a good time.
Bloody list strikes again. I was fully prepared to hate this, given a lifelong aversion to ‘Jump’. Albeit it’s the only Van Halen song I’ve consciously listened to. My first listen was sporadic across a day and wasn’t that impressed, however, I gave it a second chance as I had the weekend. Second time round, I found myself rather enjoying it. ‘Jump’ aside, which is still a synth rock nightmare (it’s just 80s pop). The rest of it was rather good really (albeit a bit crass in places). Some good riffs and what I now discover is Eddie’s signature solo stuff. But it is what 80s hair rock is, just dumb OTT fun, don’t look to deeply just go with it! Tbh having been on quite the run of 70s albums of late, this did feel a bit of a refreshing change, maybe I’m beginning to understand 80s music now, gulp.
I should have been listening to this when I was 14..... Hot for teacher is a speed rock classic.
Panama is a 6.
I'm biased positively towards this album, Van Halen is my dad's favorite band, and I listened to this album a lot growing up. Coming back to it now after many years of not listening to it left me with some surprises. For one, I realized that my dad removed the more sexual songs from my mpe player lol. For two, I remembered Van Halen as being part of the masturbatory rock genre, and while that's true, the combination of shorter songs with the bona fide talent of Eddie actually makes for pretty tightly made songs. Lastly, it is coherent as an album, especially a pop album. That's not pejorative at all, in fact, I prefer having some pop sensibilities in rock especially because otherwise we end up with these shitty rock albums where somehow they think it's okay to have a 3 minute solo PER SONG.
I'm a big fan of this album - short and to the point, 33 minutes of 80s glam rock with the best Van Halen vocalist
Some of their best work
Great Rock N Roll
⭐ Jump
That was exactly what I expected! Pretty good!
all the best of dad rock and a little filler but not a lot so it's fine
Jump and Panama back to back is insane. What a fun album. I faded a bit on the back half but the rest was like heroin
It was better than I remembered
This is just a stupid fun record. The amount of spandex and coke that must have been involved in its recording is palpable.
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Van Halen leaning into the pop, oh what fun.
It's very over the top hair metal, when jump kicked in I wasn't really up for it. As it went on it became clear how much better Eddie van halen/David lee Roth are at this than most bands. Hot for teacher is class and the tracks onwards from this were good too. Not a genre I would listen to frequently but van halen have to be one of the best at it. 3.5.
Pretty good album. I can’t believe it’s only 33 minutes but has 4 iconic Van Halen songs. Jump, Panama, Hot for Teacher, I’ll Wait. I wasn’t a fan at the time but I get it.
Hollywood Rocks!
Who doesn’t like a bit of Van Halen? I’ll admit that the over use of guitar wankery can get a little much at times, but they can definitely write excellent pop rock songs when they want to. I remember the first time I managed to play the intro to Hot For Teacher, I felt like an absolute badass. For me, the guitar wankery doesn’t get to go too overboard here, so I can enjoy the music for what it is. This is probably one of the better Van Halen albums.
Fun album. Good rock and roll vibes. Nothing too serious. RIP Eeddie💕
A nice reintroduction to Van Halen
The most popular album of their career and their last one with David Lee Roth until the early 2010s, 1984 sees Van Halen ascend the hard rock/metal world and into a whole other playing field, one that was brought on by ongoing momentum and dabbling in already prevalent musical trends that they would help shape in their image for the time being. Although steeped in the early 80s sound, much is to be enjoyed in regards to 1984 and it is a tad pitiful that the dynamic found here wouldn't sustain itself for long. Favorites: Jump, Panama, Drop Dead Legs, Hot for Teacher, House of Pain.
banger
All I think of when I hear 'Jump' is Shamu. Thanks, Sea World! Not bad. I don't usually like 80's hair metal. Made better because it's a short album and my son likes this so much. 4/5
Man, that slaps!
I had fun.
Good sound that I rocked out to, and a good encapsulation of "hair metal." However, the problem with this album is that it doesn't really "fit" as an album or feel like "one thing", especially towards the end. But I did enjoy it.
Fine, dad rock
Zasadniczo to całkiem fajne. Trzy wyróżniające się utwory. Dobre gitarki i śpiew. 4/5
This brought back some memories. I had listened to this in some time and the songs that hit still hit the same way.
I feel inspired to open my own karate dojo
It’s a great album with some great songs, especially Jump and Panama (SORTED) IYKYK
Classic high school rocker wax. The B-side is patchy but if Van Halen ever produced anything like a masterpiece, this is it. It's all downhill from here.
It terms or rock / metal Van Halen were before my time but I always like Eddie and his innovation on guitar. Classic album enough said. Stand out tracks: - Jump - Panama - Top Jimmy - Drop dead legs - Hot for teacher - Girl gone bad
Very good songs. Some iconic hits, and others that are great but don't reach that level for me.
Not typically what I'd listen to, but completely a product of its time and embodies so much of the 80s. Eddie Van Halen is undeniably a one-of-a-kind guitarist. Some filler, but the album was short, which helps.
Good
What a banger when it came out. If we had the ability then to play videos on demand, Hot for Teacher would've melted our set. VH and MTV rocked!
nice and short. I wasn't really in the mood for this but still good.
7/10 - It was pretty good. I liked the songs I knew and some of the other songs were decent. Although I was not a huge fan of Ill Wait
I cannot hate this album, no matter how many times I hear Jump. For a guy as proficient at guitar as Eddie Van Halen to push such a synthesiser-forward album is impressive. Innumerable catchy hooks and riffs make almost every song on this album hard to skip. Panama, Hot for Teacher, and Drop Dead Legs are standouts for me. Top Jimmy is such an insane performance from Eddie and Alex. Girl Gone Bad is another crazy instrumental, I always am having a great time listening to it. House of Pain is the only song on this album that I think is subpar, just a bit naff. In saying all of this, David Lee Roth across the whole album has such a cunty voice, it makes me uncomfortable. I do not need him to explain letting off the handbrake in such a sultry voice. Or all of his orgasm adlibs. I do not know exactly what it is, the timbre, the tone, the delivery? Fucking freak. Album rocks though.
Classic
VH at their finest, which isn’t really that great. Most overhyped band in history? I’ll give them a 4 just because if you put Eddie in any other band, they might be better.
It's the Van Halen album that first blew up for them, and showcases their instrumental prowess as a band, the best of Diamond Dave's shtick, and the most fun songwriting. This album was everywhere throughout the 1980s, and Jump, Panama and Hot for Teacher have lived on as staples of classic rock radio. On listening today, I was most surprised by how synthesizer-forward so many of the songs were. And House of Pain sounded much heavier than the other songs; not as good a vehicle for David Lee Roth’s vocal style. 4+⭐️
One of the routine things that is slowly becoming my favourite thing to do with these 1001 albums is diving into a bands discography to see where the album fits amongst the rest of their work. Sometimes I'm surprised to see there was a record before or after, sometimes like in the case of the BeeGees, I'm surprised to find they existed as almost an entirely different band for many albums before their most famous work. I also find it really interesting when a band has their most recognizable work, like in the case of 1984, flanked by albums I either didn't know existed, or aren't very recognizable. Anyway, this album is good. The singles by now are stale, but I enjoyed the cuts I wasn't familiar with. Back to the discography dive, surprised to see this was their 6th album by this point. Would have guessed second or something.
Good.
Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.
Some of Van Halen's best tracks in one place, the rest were hit or miss. Pretty good balance of catchy ballads and moments where the guitar/synth/drums just rip
Awesome
Weird mix of pop rock and heavy metal. Jump is obviously a classic. Some really good riffs in there too
Også fed. Ikke så god som den anden
Incredible album and arguably one of the best Van Halen records. There are at least 3 radio hits on this album alone, and it is a great showcase of EVH's talent.
Hot out of the gate with Jump and Panama. Easily two of Van Halen's best songs. Jump giving service to the synthlords with an infectious song that is only surpassed by the quality of its music video. Then there is Panama, which pairs best with big hair and American muscle. Either I've missed it my whole life, or something about this remastered mix is really weird though -- the engine noises seem more pronounced and cheesy. Top Jimmy opens with some harmonic fret-play, and features plenty of additional licks with one of the more pocketed grooves I've ever heard from Van Halen. Honestly a weird song in the skitteringness of the guitar, but I'll be damned if that groove didn't get me. Really feeling some elements of Drop Dead Legs that echo in the play of Cinninger. Would be a complete throwaway if not for Eddie Van Halen's play. Second side of the album opens with one of Van Halen's goofier singles: Hot for Teacher. May be goofy, but I love it. Thumping double bass, a wonderfully distorted and ultra catchy riff, and David Lee Roth selling all of the delivery. I completely forgot about I'll Wait. What a completely different tone this song carries relative to the rest of the songs on here. Completely synth led in the most 80s possible way -- the guitar doesn't come in until 3/4 the way through. Have to say, this isn't one I would go out of my way for individually, but I'm loving it here. Some high quality Van Halen right there. Something about the energy makes me wish I lived through this release in real time. Solid 4 / 5.
Classic good album. Serious hot guitar licks. 4 stars
Another album that I have listened to 1000 times in my life. So great for it to come up though because this is a banger from VH. Jump is an all time energy song, and it works even better when 1984 intros it. So many timeless classics on here like Panama and Hot for Teacher that will never get old. I'll Wait is lowkey one of my favorite Van Halen songs. Such an awesome high energy Rock and Roll album that shreds for just the right amount of time at 33 minutes. Didn't need any more songs on here. Not a perfect album by any stretch but it is certainly an all time classic.
Never was the biggest Van Halen fan, but can't deny some of the greatness on this record. Jump, Panama, Hot For Teacher are classics in my mind. The rest wasn't terrible Van Halen I was getting pretty into it. I'll Wait gives me Dire Straights vibes for some reason. Low 4.
Solid 80s hair metal album. Lots of hits for such a small track list. Best Song: Hot for Teacher
Great but blended into the background
Man the start of this album is absolutely killer. Jump and Panama back to back, then Drop Dead Legs? Fantastic. I love a good guitar solo, and Eddie VH is one of the best to ever do it. I was not expecting Van Halen to be so polarising, that was a surprise to me. This album rocks. There was only one caveat I had with it: Hot For Teacher is a weird song and I felt gross listening to it. This album is near perfect to me, the only thing that stops me from giving it a perfect 5 is Hot For Teacher. What a shame. Nevertheless, awesome album, and definitely will be giving it further listens in the future.
What an energy from this album. The guitars, the drums, the ridiculously fun lyrics. It's what makes Van Halen well...Van Halen. Those drums on Hot For Teacher. So good. Listening more to the guitar on it now, I pick up some ZZ Top sounds that I don't think I noticed before.
Pivotal album for rock, amazing
I don't think I have ever listened to this entire album before. You certainly couldn't avoid hearing Jump and Panama and Hot for Teacher at the time. Jump is not my favorite VH song by a long shot -- when I want that kind of early 80s synth sound, I'll go look for Steve Winwood. But this is an interesting bridge between the classic VH sound and the just-around-the-corner Sammy Hagar era.
I don't love van halen, but overall I found the album pretty solid
Jump and Panama are iconic songs. I think I like Panama more, just because Jump is a little more pop with the all the synth, but both are the cream of the crop on the album. Some of the songs are a little odd/creepy, but for the most part this is a good album with some great songs. I generally like the rock music from this era, and this is not an exception to that. Favorite Song(s): Jump, Panama, I'll Wait
Van Halen: known for epic guitar solos and songs that don't suck. On those premises, this album delivers. Hot For Teacher has a magic intro, otherwise few songs are above the expectation.
Synths, guitar riffs, yet Hot for Teacher, as a teacher. Time-stamped, yet timeless.
This is a real dudes rock album. Two of my favourites up front, Jump and Panama. Both with superb instrumentals and decent vocals. These two both get me very hyped. Top jimmy and Drop Dead Legs had some pretty sweet guitar and drums parts. Instrumentals are good overall and very mu huch a product of their time with the overdriven and squealing guitars. The vocals are here and there
'Jump' is amazing (I've heard the intro in so many movies), definitely a banger! 'Panama' is another certified banger! 'Top Jimmy' started out way like a complex composition that was supposed to lead to a deeper song but then was a run of the mill rock song (not that it's a bad thing). 'Drop Dead Legs' started out really simply, but the ending guitar solo was great 'Hot for Teacher': haha, a fun track, gonna send this to Saloni 😂 'I'll wait': Has deeper layers with great work on the guitar. One of the highlights for me on the album 'Girl Gone Bad': nothing spectacular 'House of Pain': nice guitar work, enjoyable
So good! EVH is unreal. Damn good album for the bands first release.
I did not expect to like this so much. Glam 'hard' rock is really really really not my thing, but this album is filled to the brim with Bangers and well made songs Back loaded tho 8/10 Fav tracks - Jump, Drop Dead Legs, Hot for Teacher, I'll Wait, Girl Gone Bad, House of Pain, Least fav - Panama
Panama is pretty sick, played that song about hots for the teacher on guitar hero, very hard!
Good album with fun songs
Amazing guitar
Heavy metal. Un par de megahits. Un 4.
Le doy un 4, pero por Jump.
Guess I know why I knew most of these songs, I get it. Hot for teacher is the corniest song ever
singles are great, filler is usually fine. evh is fun in how he oscillates between rhythm guitar restraint and absolute shredder wank.
This is a really good Van Halen album. The singles are the best songs, but the rest aren’t bad. I tend to prefer the Sammy Hagar years a bit more (I know…) but this is pretty much peak Van Halen.
Pretty good. This one surprised me. I went in with low expectations expecting to listen to more overplayed dead horses, but overall very enjoyable. Jump, Panama, and Teacher are all five star songs, even though they’ve been played over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. David Lee Roth seems like the kind of person who would be a horrible roommate but a fun neighbor (down the hall or street not sharing a wall with).
It’s pretty dumb but dumb fun is what Van Halen excels at and they don’t overstay their welcome on 1984. They rip thru the keyboard hit Jump and Panama carried by Eddies signature crunchy riffs. The content of Panama is kinda confusing, is Roth racing cars for the rights of a woman, is he chasing her in his car? Top Jimmy, again musically it’s so good, lyrically… I mean just read the lyrics, they honestly read like a short story an 8yr old would write about a cool dude, so dumb. Hot For Teacher, again so dumb but you can’t deny how cool that drum opening is and another classic riff from Eddie. Roth’s so good at the smarmy delivery too, it’s a great dumb song. 4 dumb stars
liked this WAY more than I thought I would. Great players? did not know!!!
Van Halen's 1984 is a landmark album that marked a turning point for the band, incorporating synthesizers alongside their signature hard rock sound. The album produced some of their most iconic hits, including "Jump" and "Panama," while showcasing Eddie Van Halen's innovative guitar work and David Lee Roth's charismatic vocals. While some may view it as a shift towards a more pop-oriented sound, 1984 remains a powerful and influential rock record.
Pure '80s vibes. A tight album with a lot of memorable bangers.
Great album, though not their very best
3.5 stars rounded up.
This feels like a quintessential 1980s album. It’s hard to think about from Rock from the 80s and not include Van Halen on that list, and I feel like this album has all the singles you would expect somebody to know. Obviously some of the lyrics and juvenile and questionable at times, but they exist as a product of their time, and can exist then without trying to be recreated now.
127/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
Tremendous opening with jump. Followed swiftly by the great panama. Some impressive guitar solos and riffs in drop dead legs. Hot for teacher, an absolute banger. Great song. Love the opening riff and fast drum beat. The rest were hear nor there for me. Overall a pretty good album. I'd probably say a 3.5. I think a 3 is too low so ill have to give a 4.
Great classic rock album that doesn't try too hard. It's a pretty good example of knowing all the band members capabilities and sticking to it.
loved the guitar solos
This record is fun, gets in and out quick and makes me feel like I’m in an 80s movie training montage. Good way to start the day.
Despite the overwhelming narcissisism of DLR, pretty good.
Excellent album - I tend to go for the first two VH albums and I forget how good 1984 is. Really hilarious how there was a huge uproar over the keyboards. It’s not that overwhelming.
Destaques para: Jump, musica clássica da banda Panama Hot for Teacher. 4/5
Expected to enjoy this on the basis of ‘Jump’ but it was actually much more varied that I expected. It actually had songs I feel like I’ll want to listen to again which has been rare in this list so far! 3.5 but I’ll round to 4
Some great tunes. Some I wish I could forget
Jump, Panama, AND Hot For Teacher!? there is enough stadium rock in just those three singles for at least a decade. Top Jimmy has these wild almost country licks.
Panama is great and this is representative of 80s hard rock
I usually say I'm not a Van Halen fan but I really enjoy their music. Every song on this, though very synth heavy, is just full of great energy and fun. Jump, Panama, hot For Teacher, I'll Wait - all great songs! Just fun, headbanging, singalong tunes.
ich freu mich scho jz hert uf panama (und nöd würkli uf jump will soo hert overplayed) s intro würkt echli wie "hey mier hend jz imfall synths hahahah fuck es isch ebe doch en banger, ich nimm mini ussag über jump wieder zrugg (also doch immerno overplayed) PANAMAAAAAA ouh han jz nöd so glost aber ja top jimmy und drop dead legs sind lieder gsi hot for teacher no geile ahfang mite doublebass mega de "ich chan gitarre spiele" ahfang aber find recht geil wies schlagzüg zieht ja finds recht cool aber d lyrics sind schochli weird? I'll wait mega catchy synthi aber am schluss fast echli obnoxious wie er sich gfühlt durs ganze lied durrezieht und wieder horndawg? house of pain würkt wie wenn eifach denkt hend "hey mier gebet eifach ah", hetmi jz nöd umghaue sehr schwierig zum bewerte, panama und jump sind hslt schono banger aber s ischmer chli too much und abgseh vo paar moment hetsmi nöd glich packt wies debutalbum
Not bad at all
Some nice nostalgic 80s synth rock tunes on here, and Eddie Van Halen was hands down one of the greatest guitarists of all time (RIP). Some decent stuff among the non-radio hits, too. A lot of objectification (particularly the video for Hot For Teacher) that wouldn't really fly today, though.
Legendary, but doesn't quite have the magic of the Van Hagar era
You have to get past the sexism, as the guitar and drums are amazing. This is a solid album overall.
Such a legendary band however some of the song lyrics were not the best
classic 80's rock album, but not their best. big guitar, big drums, light on lyrics. some great tracks besides the commercially over-played Panama & Jump.
It’s a great album, but all the other songs never reach the heights of “Panama” and “Jump.”
This actually never stopped fucking banging. some of it is a little cheesy cause like is saying that your teacher is hot hardcore? Well no, but somehow it’s still the best song on the album. makes me wanna grow my hair long again just to headbang that shit 1. hot for teacher 2. i’ll wait 3. house of pain
could i write poetry to this? y
Some good singles. Not my favorite album as a whole.
I wasn't expecting to like this so much! So many solid tunes.
PG
Hmm, I was aware about "Jump" - as this is played so often, I have reduced Van Halen to this song. Thanks to get a chance to hear the complete album :-) At the end I was surprised - songs like "hot for teacher" are really good, creative and powerful. Thanks for this. At the end 4 stars - because not all songs have this high level
Panama, Jump, and I'll Wait were good tracks. Hot For Teacher is pretty cringey nowadays, definitely a product of it's time. Overall, definitely defined 80's rock. For that, it gets a 4/5, though I probably won't listen to it again minus the aforementioned hits.
Decent album, some nice energetic music to hype yourself up
In the early 2000s I saw Bill and Ted's excellent adventure for the first time when I was in middle school. Heard about this incredible band called Van Halen then found 1984 in my parents tape collection. Turn it on full of expectations and heard Jump then turned it off and decided that the 80s were a weird time and this band sucks. I still don't love Jump, especially as a title track. It's a fun dumb song but it sounds nothing like the rest of the band's catalog and Eddie doesn't do anything for most of it. I'm happy I went through the whole album this time. Panama, Hot for Teacher, Drop Dead Legs and Girl Gone Bad are all worth it. Eddie is a guitar god. I love the things he pulls off on this album. The whole band is super tight and David Lee Roth is manic in the best ways. Still not my favorite band, but I get it now. Be Excellent to Each Other dudes.
Realno tak i tak nisam objektivan tak da 4 jer je Hot for Teacher takav banger.
What a joyous album. You can't help but smile and shake your assets!
to be honest, Panama is a great song.
Good stuff
It goes pretty hard. The last couple songs fall off a little though.
Excellent guitar sound although im not a massive fan of the glam rock sound - feels a bit manufactured
I liked the vocals and the guitars quite a bit. I think the intro going from a motorcycle into a floor tom fill on Hot for Teacher is really cool
Badass😎😎😎
Great rock album. A little bit similar to AC/DC. A few really good songs.
Good ^^
Classic middle school jam for me
Maybe the most 80s album. Fantastic vibes and good times. Maybe not the greatest record ever made but one of the funnest albums.
Good album. Close to four stars but doesn't quite get there. 74/100 though.
Great album
They were a great band at this poiny. Just one huge ball of talent (and ego unfortunately_)
Jump!
So here’s the thing. My last several albums have been painful, so even though I would never choose to listen to this one, it was a welcome and familiar assignment. 1984 was the year I graduated from high school so when I hear these songs those awesome memories flood my mind. Jump was the theme song to WGN Cubs baseball and I can vividly picture Panama and Hot For Teacher videos playing on my dorm room tv (back when MTV was pretty much just music videos). So I’m going to have to give it a 4 as a thank you for this brief trip down memory lane.
Good 80s rock
I'm really surprised there are (at least) two Van Halen albums in this collection, but I always enjoy vintage Van Halen (pre-Hagar), so no complaints here. This definitely isn't as good as their debut album, or some earlier ones, but I'm pretty sure this is the first truly commercially successful album (or at least the only album with a #1 single), so it makes sense to have it here. Even when this came out I was a bit surprised at how synth-heavy some of the songs were, and that hasn't aged all that well (in my opinion); it's a bit like how we got "Hysteria" instead of "Paranoia" for Def Leppard. (I didn't know until reading the Wikipedia entry that the synth/keyboard was Eddie's brainchild; a still mystifying preference given his guitar virtuoso/diva side.) But I've always loved "Panama" (and never could play it very well in my brief-lived guitar years), and "Hot for Teacher" is also definitely in the classic Van Halen vein (as is "Top Jimmy" and "Drop Dead Legs"). It's too bad that David and Eddie struggled to share the spotlight, as they had a great sound.
lots of fun though not too my taste. Guitar's great and I love the bouncy drums.
Van Halen in their absolute PRIME. This record reminds me of high school and that's why I love it. Timeless songs like Jump, I'll wait, Panama
The synth opening up with Jump always makes me smile. 1984 is a damn good album. It's such a fun time. David Lee Roth doesn't have the best voice but it just fits perfectly with the band. Marc Anthony, Alex Van Halen and of course Eddie Van Halen just crush it. If I had to pick a favorite off the album I have to go with Panama. That guitar work just hits me just right.
Quite a head bopper, but some of the lyrics are a bit cringy
fun, energetic, and doesn't overstay its welcome.
Really enjoyed it. Especially after days and days of duds, a bit of good old fashioned rock music. Easy to get into, rock out a bit and not overthink my 4 star rating. Knew Jump was great but there are numerous bangers here.
Some very iconic songs on this album
Enjoyed a lot.
Wow, only 3 songs in and this thing is a beast. Wow. Jump is a fucking record!!! Yeah okay this whole thing is classic.
3 good songs
Several bangers, as made famous by tiktok
It’s good probably their best
Many hits several misses - great ‘80’s rock
Not neven the best Van Halen album let alone in the top 1001
i wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I did but it was pure fun. #dudesrock
Some great tunes albeit a bit repetitive like most van halen stuff. Hot for teacher is a great track also has a killer video. AS always the guitar playing is the highlight, some excellent solos in there.
I keep getting surprised by how repetitive and pop-y 80s rock music is. Even still, I can’t say I don’t like it. Hot For Teacher will always be a bop.
Hell yeah brother honestly love this album. Jump is amazing, Panama is dope and I’ll wait is definitely my favorite by far. Drop dead legs was something I hadn’t heard before and I really liked it as well.
3.5. Maybe I'm slightly biased, as I'm a Van Halen enjoyer, and I consider Van Halen to be one of the first bands that got me into classic rock as a genre, but I think this album is pretty solid, even if it's not their best.
This album has "jump" and "panama". All time classic!
Classic rock with four great singles.
Jump, Hot for Teacher, I'll Wait
This album is pretty good. I’m not sure if it’s super deep in meaning, but at least everything flows well together. The guitar and drums were great, but I think the keyboard is really where the songs shine. The voice was decent enough. It kinda felt like it was missing something for me (maybe cohesion of the album?), but still liked it quite a lot. Favorite track: I’ll Wait
Fun album.
Music for the quad
Another solid entry by Van Halen. 30+ mins of more of their recognizable sound. Not as good as their debut but still a worthy album entry. 3.53 stars
Some classics, and I really liked that it was only 30 minutes long
Rating: 8/10 Great album overall. Plenty of great guitar riffs, solos, and melodies, Eddie Van Halen definitely carries this album. The singles are all fantastic and the highlights of the album. The rest of the songs are mostly good but sometimes questionable vocally and lyrically as well as having a few subpar riffs. Favorite songs: Jump, Panama, Top Jimmy, Hot For Teacher, I'll Wait, Girl Gone Bad. Worst songs: Drop Dead Legs, House of Pain.
Hot For Teacher is a great song. From Alex Van Halen's "motorcycle engine" drum opening to the clever snark of the lyrics to the bluesy guitar line, this is easily the best song Van Halen ever made. Just brilliant. The rest of this album doesn't live up to that song. Jump is terrible IMO. Eddie's fascination with synth guitars just doesn't do it for me. I hate that song. Can't stand I'll Wait either. Panama, Top Jimmy and Girl Gone Bad are the other standouts. The rest of the album is okay I guess. One brilliant song, some okay songs, and a few bad songs representing the shift the band was making. It is really no surprise why Roth left after this album as the band was clearly heading in a new direction.

Great Album!
A big success at the time, though some of us that loved the first couple of albums found this one to be a bit more "pop" than our taste would prefer. There's no doubt that Eddie Van Halen redefined rock guitar technique and style in the 1980s.
Classic Rock and Roll, I’m not a huge fan of the synths, but love “Hot for Teacher”
Fun album with some real bangers.
I prefer Eddie's rhythm guitar to his asymmetrical solos. But this is a good album, and overall the guitar is amazing.
The best three songs are all timers, the rest is not. Hard to rate that. 3.5
#8 Van Halen - 1984 (1984) Hard Rock AOR, Heavy Metal, Pop Rock, Glam Metal Essential cock rock. The production kinda sucks, but the songs absolutely hit when they need to. Favourite Tracks: I'll Wait, Hot for Teacher Least Favourite Track: 1984
Just pure rock from start to finish. Everyone involved knew the assignment. I would give it 4.5/5 stars only because some of the 80’s synth sound isn’t my style and sounds a bit outdated.
Not normally my type of music but this album wasn't too bad
Enjoyed this way more than i thought i would. Always just wrote off Van Halen as a boring classic rock radio band with a few hits that i heard a million times but actually sitting down and listening to this album has changed my opinion completely. This record hauls ass from front to back. It is fun and creative and entertaining as all hell. Even the hit tunes i had heard a million times on the radio sounded more interesting when i actually sat down to listen to them. The guitar playing is unreal. I was ignorant to Eddie Van Halen's style but i am now enamoured. I will definitely be doing a deep dive on Van Halen.
not as good as the first one (Van Halen)
Le doy un 4, pero por Jump.
Lyrically sophomoric, but I enjoyed the hell out of the music.
Ridiculously cheesy but infectious
- couple of all-time classics on here - guitar work is insane - good length, really enjoyed the listen
Van Halen will always have a special place in my heart. This is a great album. I love the synths incorporated into this one, and plus this album has so many tracks that will never get old to me.
So many classics pushed into a 33 minute kickass sonic experience. All hype and fist pumps
Never realized how little music is on this album. 33 minutes. That said, for me, when i think of Van Halen i think of Jump, Panama and Hot for Teacher.
80's heavy metal. Van Halen gets lumped, perhaps fairly, with the other 80's hair metal bands but they are on another level than the Poison's of the world. Eddie Van Halen's virtuosity and creativity on the guitar and a certain pop sensibility allows Van Halen to create songs (not all of them) that still play well decades later -- such as Jump & Panama from this record. They are still hard rock but talented enough to cross over to other audiences and be the standard to which other hair bands always aspire to (and fail).
Too short to be this sweet
Such a classic album, iconic sounds. Even though I’m not the biggest 80s rock fan, this album slapped Top tracks: Jump, Panama, Hot for Teacher
Really great album
The peak of Van Halen's cross between hard and glam rock. Heavy singles that appealed a wide audience while appreciating long-time fans.
C’est peut-être du gros rock de blanc sale, mais je suis après tout un blanc sale
Instrumental. Check. Bands most iconic song, check. EPIC guitar solo. This is how this album starts in the first three tracks. I didn’t feel it let up after that. Overall a brilliant piece of ‘80s rock. Brilliant!
Solid van Halen album. Fun time 👩🦱
Classic VH
One of the very few good collections of music to come out of the 80's.
The «radio hit rock» that never gets old! Classic!
"1984" by Van Halen, released in, well, 1984, is a powerhouse album that blends hard rock with pop sensibilities, showcasing the band's exceptional musicianship and songwriting prowess. Tracks like "Jump," with its iconic keyboard riff, and "Panama," with its driving guitar and infectious chorus, are standout examples of Van Halen's ability to craft anthemic rock songs. The album also includes instrumentals like "Eruption," highlighting Eddie Van Halen's virtuosic guitar skills. While "1984" leans more towards a commercial sound compared to some of Van Halen's earlier work, it retains a raw energy and edge that keeps it from feeling too polished or formulaic. Overall, "1984" is a classic album that has stood the test of time, earning it a solid 4/5 rating. It's a must-listen for fans of rock music and a testament to Van Halen's enduring legacy.
Not gonna pretend that Panama and Jump aren’t bangers. The rest does not come close. Still a decent listen though.
Certainly got my head banging for a Wednesday morning!!
A solid rocker from start to finish, sweet and to the point. E. Van Halen's insistence upon cheesy Yamaha-tinged synth throughout means some songs wear thin on modern ears. Not as hot & heavy as some Roth-era VH.
Its very similar to the van Halen album I had on two days ago, its fine you know what you are getting and I probably enjoyed it as much as I did the self titled one.
Jump Panama Hot For Teacher
don’t often listen to rock but this was fun! the lil synth-pop moments were a good addition
Van Halen
Standout songs: Tom Jimmy Girl Gone Bad
Fun Memories. Top Jimmy
Unusually good for a "classic" rock album in the 80s. Blends the sounds of the time well which a lot of acts couldn't do. Songs are good!
some crazy good guitar
good ol' rock and roll. Nisam fan tappinga na gitari, ali dobar album
TOOOOOP, isla san trcat uz ovo, mozda mi inace osim te dvi pisme najpoznatije ne bi bilo dobro
Awesome!
Some wild LFO of the top here... and the transition into Jump -- really something. I like the synth bassline on I'll Wait. I'm struck by how much fun these fellows seem to be having although the virtuosity got a bit much for me towards the end. If the album title is an Orwellian reference, it's really at odds with the content.
Awesome. Classic songs, big sound.
I yump.
Подобається, старий роцк
Favourite tracks: jump; hot for teacher; Panama; I'll wait
Not a huge fan of Van Halen, but I am a big fan of Jump. Nothing special or terrible about the rest; standard 80s rock.
No lo he escuchado súper atenta, pero parecía guay.
1984 is Van Halen at its best. Good guitar, good Synth, and of course David Lee Roth. If Roth stayed the course the groups success would have rivaled if not surpassed what was achieved by Hagar
Jump!!
Needs to be played loud. Love the guitar solos . Album cover is fun too
Drop Dead Legs is probably the best song on the album.
Its not Van Halen (debut album), dabbles a bit too much into hair metal/pop territory
all bangers, just not something i’ll usually put on
First VH album Jump, Panama, Hot for teacher, i'll wait
Some classic songs on this one like. Hit for teacher
Some wonderful standards we were all familiar with. Very high energy clearly aimed at teenage boys.
The album opens beautifully and there are some solid bops throughout. Perfect album to throw on at the top of a roadtrip.
Solid album that had held up
Classic Van Halen. Hard to believe this was the last of the David Lee Roth era albums. Panama is the stand out but all the songs are great, even Jump.
80s Nostalgia, probably. 😄
Van Halen has a fantastic sound and vibe to most of their albums, with this being one of the most unapologetically Van Halen records. The shredding guitar and the rasp of the voice is phenomenal and addictive. Standouts are Panama, Jump, and Girl Gone Bad
Know it. Live it. 4 stars? Ok.
From the start, you can tell we're entering a new era for Van Halen. I tend to associate this album with the single "Hot for Teacher" so I forget the Synthesizer makes it's first appearance here. I feel that all the singles were the correct choices as I find myself singing along and being transported back to middle school. The non singles are ok, meaning that I could take them or leave them. But I don't think the last 2 songs work and feel out of place on 1984. To me they feel like after thoughts or leftovers from past sessions. With this album we say goodbye to the Roth era and along with the Synthesizer we get a glimpse of what's to come.
Deserving of its classic status. Almost every song on here is great. I’m not a huge fan of Hot For Teacher.
I had not listened to this album in many many years. Still as great as I remembered it. Great memories! So 80's!
Classic album with some great hits! I enjoyed the songs that weren’t hits as well. Van Halen really has their niche in sound and feel. Never been a huge fan but can’t deny that they are good. This is a 3-4 album.
7/10
More than holds up, this still rocks. I can’t hear the word Panama without singing it VH style.
This is what cocaine sounds like.
When I think of hair metal this is the first album that comes to mind.
This is peak Van Halen, and the last time the creative dynamics of the original lineup would appear together. These are artists at the top of their game, straddling that awkward phase between Classic Metal Rock and the Hair Bands. Minus one star for the outrageous misogyny.
slamma jamma
1984 deserves a spot on this list. I have complicated feelings about this album because the best songs (in my opinion) on this album are probably the songs that eventually would cause David Lee Roth to leave the band. "I'll Wait" is a song that could have been on "5150." You can feel Eddie Van Halen moving the band's sound away from the band's previous song with the use of the synthesizer. Roth's lyrics have also shown no progression and are still pretty juvenile. I guess you don't ask Roth to be mature and expect it to stick. I will admit the "I don't feel tardy" line on "Hot for Teacher" still makes me chuckle for some reason. I have to be in a specific mood to hear this album, but it is the song of a band moving apart from their lead singer.
Rok klasik
Good energy but a little in the short side
A certified cheesy hard rock classic! Jump is a certified bop!
Power pop. Not up there with their debut but brought colour to a dour genre. Excellent.
Nostalgia overload! But what's surprising is how similar, in parts, this is to Rush! I never noticed that when I first listened to this album way back when.
4/5
Very entertaining album. After one listen, I was considering to give it five stars, but with the second listen there were a few songs where I was less engaged.
classic
Too hot for Teacher
Not the biggest Van Halen fan, but this is a great album. 3 giant hits, great production and guitar playing throughout. The drums on Hot for Teacher! Generally don’t find the antics that entertaining. But it rocks!
I think what makes this better in my eyes is the albums short run time and the singles are very solid, except for Jump, I hate that song. any longer and I'd chuck it, but it doesnt overstay its welcome.
The hits are bangers!
Hell yeah
The Van Halen album that pushed the pop side of things. Synths came out from the background to the forefront, most notably on Jump, shocking and dividing fans. But it worked and sold a ton.
Nothing I could say about this album that hasn't been said a million times before. 12 year old me is still in love with Van Halen. Favorite tracks: Hot For Teacher, I'll Wait
A classic.
A classic of 80s rock when it was groovy and silly. Such a fun album!
Maybe a just have a soft spot for Van Halen, but I thought this was a great album. There’s some serious hits here, “I’ll Wait” is probably my favorite VH song and “Hot for Teacher” is just so fun. And that’s the overall vibe of the album, fun hard-rocking guitar licks. It’s very 80s glam metal, but it’s basically a VH best of album so how could you not love it? It ends fairly weakly unfortunately, but the hits throughout really elevate it for me. And as the last album to feature David Lee Roth, it has a finality to the end of the VH era that dominated 80s rock.
Killer start to the record with Jump and Panama. Great guitar playing throughout. Has to be at least a 4.
Locura
Keyboard heavy Van Halen but still a classic
An album I heard all the singles from but never the main body of tracks. Light in tone throughout with some great guitar work but its Eddie Van halen, what would you expect. One song sounds like genesis but otherwise a good album. Not their best work but up there.
Every song on this album is an absolute bop and I will fight anyone who says otherwise (except the intro title track, excusable). This album shows growth and experimentation in the band while also remaining true to their style and having fun. It isn’t the most profound or deepest album, but I always enjoy listening to it and find no flaws in it. 4/5
Pure 80s cheese
Did not really age as well as I thought it would. I had only really heard the hits before and while they are good, they are not as good as my memory of them. The lyrics to "Jump" are pretty inane but I guess you don't notice when you are seeing how high you can jump every time the chorus comes around. Still enjoyed most of it so it's a 4 for me but I probably wouldn't recommend it if you'd never heard it before.
That’s a classic right there, some serious bangers, couple mid tracks but overall a really good listen
30 min of the best hair metal cock rock you can find classic album
I have never listened to a full Van Halen album before this. Very over the top, but fun and catchy.
Sehr vielseitig. Synth, Blues, HardRock, teils proggig, mehrstimmig. 4/5
jump is forever a classic hot for teacher is great overall a cool rock album
Iconic album for a reason, but a bit too short.
3 bangers
It was a good album! I like Van Halen and new a good portion of these songs, yet the album got a bit stale on the last few songs
Enjoyed the hits I'd heard before.
First things first let's make a HUGE RIP to a Mr. Eddie Van Halen. Thanks to him I have a fonder appreciation for guitar riffs and synth in rock music. This is the first time I've heard a full Van Halen and honestly it wasn't bad. The consensus seems to be a mixed bag in whether or not people consider this worthy enough to bed in this list but I thinks it deserves solely off the song "Panama". That song and other songs on here are incredible and feel like mini explosions of sound coming together to rock your eardrums. If this was the last time that the public got a full project from the OG members then I'm not complaining at all. Definitely feels like one of the musical peaks in the 80s forsure. 4 out of 5 stars.
What a banger. I've written a long review before but it got lost. So uhh. Coolest synth song with the coolest guitar band. Whee.
Solid 80s rock
Fav Song: Panama
There are few albums out there that are more synonymous with the 80s. This album just oozes style and cool. 4/5
Heavy metal. Un par de megahits. Un 4.
1. 1984 - interlude 2. Jump - I liked the synth riff of this one it was cool but I'll always associate it with Glee 3. Panama - this one had a good beat and was boppy 4. Top Jimmy - I didn't mind this one 5. Drop Dead Legs - this one had a really cool guitar solo at the end which I liked. 6. Hot for Teacher - I don't love this one, but the beat and guitar is pretty cool. 7. I’ll Wait - I like the synths in this one and it's kinda a bop. 8. Girl Gone Bad - I really like the sound of this one too. 9. House of Pain - this one has a bit more of a metal tinge to it, but still sounds ok. Overall, I actually quite liked the sound of almost all of them, I don't love the lyrics and lead vocalist but the music made up for it. I also really love the guitar solos - (go eddie van halen)
Classic
The hits are hits. The rest of the album isn’t as solid.
The highs here are great but it falls short in places.
If you love the air guitar you’ll love this album.
Classic.
I was pleasantly surprised by this one. It was less “hard” rock than I was guessing and it was pretty enjoyable to listen to
What a great album! So many fun songs. Awesome music.
I like the guitar in this. I also know some of the songs vaguely. I'd likely listen again
definitely a “i’ve heard these all before” album i liked it but it’s basic
