Reviews (page 4 of 13)
This is my third Neil Young listen of the list. It's a good classic rock album, but doesn't really do much to transcend that. Young has written some great songs, but they aren't on this record. I feel like Young is usually at his best when he goes more introspective, and this record has some of that but not a whole lot. The guitar playing isn't particularly virtuosic, but it serves the songs as well as you'd expect. I actually quite like Young's voice, so that isn't the problem here. It was clear that his songwriting still needed some work, but this is still a good record if not a great one.
not my thing
I used to like the rockers more but now I like the slow long jams more.
Sindssyg debutplade at udgive. Gudsbenådet rocker, fra day 1. hvor mange soloer har down by the river?
Well, it’s a Shakey classic right? I’m a big Neil Young fan. I’m particularly a Neil Young with Crazy Horse fan. We get some classics hare and the less well known material is a real treat too. Obviously, as a NY&CH fan, I love the grooving, the imperfections, the looseness, the guys-in-a-room-just-playing vibe. Unlike many though I don’t let myself go overboard on NY’s soloing. I get a bit uncomfortable when reviewers get poetic about no-one being able to do it like Neil Young. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy hearing them stretching songs out longer than they know they should and Neil extracting as much filth out of Old Black and whatever amps he’s pushing to the edge that day. It’s just the limits of his playing are on full display, so eulogising in purple prose about them seems unnecessary. Anyway that’s just an aside. At the end of the day, this pushed things towards Neil’s future way more than his debut, but my (likely unpopular) take is that this is a strong stepping stone towards After The Gold Rush rather than his first bona fide solo classic. Still love it though.
This is a step towards Neil’s ascent to brilliance— but not there yet. “Down by the River” is a great murder ballad… but does it need to be 10 min long?
I definitely need to revisit this album because there are so many interesting moments on here. I love the simplicity of the earlier songs in the tracklist and the more experimental sound of the later ones. Very creative and unique. Favorites: Cinnamon Girl, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets)
Neil is a huge blindspot for me. I need to do a deep dive on him one day. This is a very nice record that I think one listen doesn't quite do justice. My thoughts are similar to Christgau's review: I'm not all the way in to Neil yet but I certainly see the appeal.
Cinnamon Girl is a great opener. The rest of the tracks are okay. I’m not a Neil Young fan, I can appreciate his musical and songwriting talent. Not a bad listen.
Yeah I really liked this. Middle song was too long but the finale definitely saved it.
Young showing finally to me his rock edge and song writing chops. This is great from start to finish.
Great album!
kinda fucking with this heavy actually. prefer type o's version of cinnamon girl but i'll be so real i had no idea it was even a cover. great song
There is way too much Neil Young on this list, but this is one of the better ones. Only 7 tracks and 3 are classics - and what a great 1-2 punch with the openers. Realistically, probably a 3, but just pushes to a 4 because Cinnamon Girl is that good.
It’s quite nice, actually.
lindo
great listen. no standout tracks. def a whole album experience

Raw, emotional, gritty, remorseful album. It was beautiful at times, extremely sad at others. Great album
Never been much of a country fan, but this got better as it went along. Definitely got me on a bit of a Neil Young kick afterwards. Favourite track: Down By The River Least favourite track: Cinnamon Girl
There’s a warmth in the guitars that no doubt comes from a feeling of familiarity, despite this being my first listen, and that’s largely because I’m a big fan of Pearl Jam - I expect most Pearl Jam fans would instantly like this. Down By the River is long but worth every second, whilst Cowgirl In the Sand is another highlight, closing the album out expertly. Whilst the former has some outstanding guitar playing on display, I love the bass driving underneath. I’ve stopped short of giving 5 stars but I was close!
favs: down by the river
Ta bien, es de calidad pero no tanto.
hey I'm really tired but I just want y'all to know that Neil Young makes cool music. I liked this album. I feel like if anyone out there hates Bob Dylan, you might like Neil Young, because they accomplish the same things but like from different angles. It's cool. I need to go to bed
Wow. Final Leonard Cohen album immediately followed by my final Neil Young album? Crazy. What are the odds of that happening? Anyways, we've reached the last of the Neil Young albums on this list. Though, funnily enough, this is actually the earliest of the bunch from a chronological standpoint. Funny how that works, isn't it? Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere is among the most important albums in Neil Young's discography. It was his second album ever, his first with Crazy Horse, and it's widely considered to be Neil's first truly great album and the point where he starts becoming the Neil Young you know and maybe love. This is basically his "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan," in a sense. How good is it actually? Pretty good! I don't think it's his best, but it's certainly one of his best. Neil's voice is exactly as good as you think it is. What that means is entirely dependent on how you feel about Neil Young, but for me it's a good thing. His songwriting isn't quite at its peak, but it's still good stuff. I was kind of surprised to hear Neil doing longer songs like "Down By The River" and "Cowgirl in the Sand" this early on in his career. You know what? That paid off. Those are the two best songs on this album. "Down By The River" especially is excellent. But what about Crazy Horse? This was their first album with Neil after all. Well, they do great as well! This album has more of a rockin' attitude, which I'm not against. I do like his folkier stuff quite a bit, but Neil's a good rock star too. This album isn't quite as amazing as an album like Harvest or After the Gold Rush, but Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere is still a very impressive record and a must-listen for sure. It's Neil Young, okay? High 4/5.
**** Sunday, 3 May, 2026 Baltimore-Washington Airport terminal I am waiting for my flight back to Detroit after Maddie Purdy’s first communion, and sitting in a cafe, listening to Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s 1969 album *Everybody Knows This is Nowhere*. This album is both eternal and futuristic. I was lucky to see Neil Young with Crazy Horse two years ago. They played “Down by the River” and “Cinnamon Girl”. This is an incredible album. It sounds fantastic in all the ways Neil Young is fantastic.
Listened at work, enjoyed.
Rating:★★★★ Nice Classic Rock album. Easy listening. I enjoyed the guitar solos.
Spoiled a little by the last 2 tracks that run out of steam, the rest of the album I enjoyed. So what happened? 3½
“Cinnamon Girl” lights this album up with jangly, hard guitars—good morning! “Down By The River” is an all-timer. 4/5 rating for this one How did this generator know to give me an album from my birth year!? I guess it just proves I am a dirty hippie…
Liked this a lot more than I thought I would.
I never listen to albums like this so definetly new for me ,yet excited can't lie.Really remindsme of the song sweet o child of mine.I LOVED the everybody knows this is nowhere(2009 remaster).Runnin Drythe 6th song is so different from the rest ,really nice instrumental work.Done with it.
Normally I have a hate or like (not love) thing with Neil Young, but for some reason Cinnamon Girl hit different this time around... I blame the full moon on a spring evening.
Knew very little about Neil but thought this album was super great and lived up to the hype!!
me hizo acordar mucho a los Beatles muy bueno
I can empathise with anyone who doesn't like Neil's voice. I took quite a while to come around to it. I think this album gets extra points because it broke new ground at the time. The problem with that is if it was released today it would not stand out at all, but many later artists drew from this work. I liked him better in CSNY and I like some of his other work better. No 3's so a 4.
le canzoni mi piacciono molto, così come l’artista in generale ma l’unica pecca è che sono tutte molto lunghe e dopo un po’ le trovavo un po’ noiose, le ascolterei sicuramente come sottofondo musicale
I was mainly impressed with the talented guitar performances here. Favourite Track(s): Cinnamon Girl, Down By The River, Cowgirl in the Sand Least Favourite Track(s): Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets)
I'm beginning to think that Neil Young gets the somewhat dubious prize for the most albums in this collection (nine total, including the two CSNY and Buffalo Springfield albums), but thankfully this is a well-deserved entry, and stands perhaps as his second best effort (behind "Harvest") in this collection. "Cinnamon girl" is an enduring classic and a powerful way to launch the album (and "Cowgirl in the sand" is an equally powerful way to end it), and so many of these tracks sound familiar enough to make me think I've probably heard them before, while the ones I haven't encountered before are nice discoveries (especially the haunting "Running dry"). "Round & round" is probably the weakest of the lot, but it seems it's a favorite of many (including Young), so that's probably on me. What a great launch for Crazy Horse and Neil Young, even if they get a little lost here and there in noodle land.
Now here is an album I can have on all day and not get sick of it. There’s something comforting about Neil Young and the longer it plays the more you fall for his vocals and the cadence of the songs. Not quite a banger, but a warm blanket when you need it.
Rough around the edges, but in a way that really works. This is where Neil Young leans into those long, loose guitar jams, and they carry a lot of the album. The songs themselves are pretty straightforward, but that gives everything room to breathe. It can feel a bit unfocused at times, but the highlights more than make up for it. When it hits, it’s great.
Pretty fly for 1969, kinda aged, but still kicks sometimes
Bros horse goes crazy
I was pleasantly surprised at the proto grunge sound rather than the whiny folksy stuff I picture from Neil young. For that I’ll round up
Down by the River is not a favourite track. In fact, on occasion I’ve called it a track I hate. Reason? Boring and long. But otherwise I liked listening to this album a lot.
Very 70s country-rock sounding. While not extraordinary, it’s perfectly listenable. Pleasant and doesn’t overstay its welcome. A solid 40 minute listen
Always like Neill music. This is not my favorite of his but still solid.
Has Pearl Jam silently been trying to turn me into a Neil Young fan all this time?!? Everybody Knows.. this album feels like it was recorded after one too many beers at rehearsal. Loose, lively, and just this side of sloppy. Not polished, but that's kind of the point. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions - Cinnamon Girl - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere - Down by the River - Cowgirl in the Sand
Neil Young is all over this list lol. The band with him is great.
Great album, loved the feeling of the songs and the lyrics. Hace to listen to it more, but I'm sure It will become a favorite.
Enjoyable 60s country rock. 'Down by the River' is somehow, at nine minutes, not too long. Probably won't put it on when I'd listen to Harvest if I wanted Neil Young
8 / 10
Pretty cool , cool vibes id give this a solid 8/10
Legend. He's incredible. One of the great songwriters of his generation. The album is amazing. Down by the River alone is worthy of a 4-star. He does it great. A dozen others do it equally or even better. Buddy Miles, the Meters, of course there's the 20 min version the man himself plays with Phish at Farm Aid. Great fkn tune, great fkn album.
This is a pretty decent album. I was scared I would get some generic 60's pop rock music like The Beatles, but this was actually rather good. 4/5
Light 8
It's giving Led Zeppelin
I like Neil Young, and this is my first Neil Young album I ever had, so I've listened to it to death. Appreciate there's a Dolby Atmos version of it that made it more interesting this time around than when I last heard it, which was probably a few years ago, as I said in other reviews. I like noise, I like melody, I like distinctive voices, and I feel this album has all three in spades.
The Good: We finally made it to nowhere! The Bad: We wanted to be anywhere but nowhere… The Ugly: Well, Neil Young’s voice doesn’t get any better now that we are nowhere… When the album showed itself, I wanted to not like it, thus continuing my dislike for most Neil Young albums… Yet, the fucker, even when being nowhere, is still much better than many of the shit albums I’ve had the displeasure of having to listen to for the past couple of years… Cinnamon Girl… classic, and great album opener. The rest, well, it made me forget that I am nowhere! Now, I shall apply numerology to score this album: This is album 656 that has been presented to me… Simple math: 6+5+6 is 17… 1+7 is 8… divided by 2 is 4 4*
ugh neil young i love you such striking instrumentals highlights: cinnamon girl, round & round, down by the river 4.5/5
i didn’t want to listen even to start this. felt boring. but i believe it could be lovely so i gave it a try. but not the vibe. i’m too depressed rn
The best of Neil's albums with Crazy Horse and one of the best on the list. It is such a great record. 9/10 [KEEP]
Listens: 4 Standout Tracks: Down By The River, Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets) I've given Neil Young, and Neil Young + Crazy Horse very favorable reviews. This must be my 5th or 6th album on the List so far, and this album is no different. It's just so damn easy to listen to, and I really appreciate the soft of extended jammy sessions on Down By The River and Cowgirl In The Sand. Something about Down By The River also reminds me of Cake, but I can't recall which song. I looked it up and there's no sample or link between Cake and Neil Young.
Crazy Horse!
3rd April 2026. 11pm. 9 and 10 minutes lenght for a song is crazy, but when you do it well it's just so good to hear. Thank you Neil Young and Crazy Horse for this album, I had a great time. 9/10
Classic 60s americana. Also led me to some even more incredible music in the following spotify recs. Helped me get to 1900 chess.com bullet making it a perfect album. Certified me as a Neil Young fan.
Ближе к средине и концу альбом стал нудный и занудный, как я люблю.
One of Neil's best and more mellow albums.
I love Neil Young in all his incarnations - Buffalo Springfield, CSNY, and especially when he plays with Crazy Horse. This album has 3 of my favorite Neil Young songs - Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River, and Cowgirl in the Sand. The title song is also great. Unfortunately, it also has Round and Round and Running Dry. Not so great. Tempted to give it a 5 based on those 4 songs but those other 2 are just too bad to overcome.
Nice album with country side vibes i would give a 6/10 !
Música favorita: Cowgirl in the Sand
Listened to this on a foggy moody morning and it made it even better. Fave songs: Round & Round (It Won’t Be Long), Down By The River
Absolutely great, powerful work from Neil & the guys from Crazy Horse. Among their best easily. Rated 4.5 on RYM and I love 5 out of 7 songs here, however I am thinking to reserve another 5 stars for "Harvest" and maybe for "On the Beach". Not sure yet. This is great, but I am being too generous lately.

Amazing, it mixes perfectly Rock, Country, Blues and Jazz
like just great ya know
This was really good. Several listens and still enjoying it. Great effort by Mr Young and the Mr Horse.
Neil Young at the average level - Its Neil Young
8/10 muy buen folk rock progresivo. Canciones favoritas: Down by the river; Cowgirl in the sand.
Enjoyed the vibes. Straight from badass to sad about women
Feitelijk weet ik dat pedaaltjes al sinds de jaren '60 bestaan maar ik associeer ze toch vooral met de afgelopen 30-40 jaar. Neil Young is like, well then listen to this. I'm like, thanks Neil, hell yea. Ook de nummers die wat meer akoestisch en folky gaan zijn mooi, maar wel wat minder boeiend
I enjoyed this album. I haven’t heard the entire album. Only a few songs. Would listen again
A classic from uncle Neil.
Very insightful album.
Ikke min favoritt NY-plate, men fornøyelig læll
Ikke verdens mest spennende plate, men det er noe med NY som fungerer veldig fint til kaffen på rolige morgener.
Upolert, men koselig. De lengste låtene er de beste.
Liked this more than I thought I would. I respect Neil Young a lot, but not a huge fan of his music. Cinnamon Girl and Down by the River are fantastic. Warm tones, some overdriven guitars. This is somewhere between a 3 and a 4 for me, but bumped up to 4 because of these two tracks.
Interessante que a voz do young aqui é bem mais contida comparado com os álbuns posteriores. Provavelmente o meu favorito dele até o momento.
Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River, and Cowgirl in the Sand are the clear standouts.
4.5
Okay fine, I really like Neil Young. This is the second album of his I’ve checked out and it’s only made me like him more. Longer songs on this album, but beautiful guitar solos in each.
The only Neil Young albums I’ve ever listened to are THIS NOTE’S FOR YOU (1988) and FREEDOM (1989) and I don’t currently own any Neil Young albums or CDs. Asa a person, I love the guy. A stand-up dude and rock icon, he was flipping the bird at corporate bullshit in the 1980s when few did; Neil Young is the antithesis of “sellout.” But, for the most part, none of his song ever made me want to listen to any of his 1960s or 1970s work. Twangy, countrified rock just isn’t my bag. So, it’s 2026 and I’m listening to Neil Young’s second album with an open mind… On first listen, it’s all unexpectedly tolerable and track 4 (“Down By The River”) and 6 (“Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets)”) stand out as favorites. I’d probably give the album 3 out of 5. By the second, the entire thing is really, surprisingly, growing on me. The honesty and raw, live real-ness of it all is coalescing into a jangly whole. The last track “Cowgirl in the Sand” is a standout gem this time; it would fit right in on The Beatles WHITE ALBUM. Now the album’s at least a personal 4 out of 5. It’s not the type of music I would ever think to turn to on my own, but I’m grateful I found this album here, fixing a hole in my 1960s/70s rock listening.
Everybody knows this is nowhere is the first album where Neil truly sounds like himself. Neil is my go to Sunday morning soundtrack. Love the songwriting with those loose, hypnotic jams. This album definitely top 3 of his. Relistening to After the gold rush, harvest, rust never sleeps and on the beach again and again.
A good day when a Neil Young album with Crazy Horse backing him up is selected. Many classics on here, but I’d pick and choose those songs when in the mood, not listen to the whole album. 1 song added to playlist.
Closest to country I’ll probably ever enjoy
One of the best Neil Young albums live Cinnamon Girl, Down the River and Cowgirl in the Sand
A classic!!! You can never go wrong with Neil Young (although from the reviews I realized that he really is a hit or miss for people) I’m not always a fan of long, instrumental-heavy “jam” tracks, but this album convinced me otherwise. Everything feels coherent and deliberate, even with its lingering, sprawling guitars and whatnot. Favs: Down by the river & running dry
This record is a masterclass in raw, unpolished power. Neil Young and Crazy Horse sound loose, almost fragile at times, but that looseness is exactly what gives the album its emotional weight. It feels human rather than perfected. “Cinnamon Girl” is pure electricity—direct, driving, and unforgettable. The extended jams on “Down by the River” and “Cowgirl in the Sand” stretch out into hypnotic, ragged explorations that helped define a blueprint for decades of guitar-driven rock. The playing isn’t flashy or pristine, but it’s deeply committed. The imperfections add character rather than detract from it. At its best, the album captures a restless, searching energy that feels ahead of its time. Still, the long-form tracks occasionally flirt with indulgence, and while the record is undeniably important and consistently strong, it doesn’t quite cross into transcendent territory. A powerful, influential album that rewards attention and respects space. A strong four.
muy bueno cabrita nail
I’ve known and liked this album for a long time. The guitar work and raw energy are fantastic, and “Cinnamon Girl” is especially cool. Overall, the album feels like classic guitar rock—relaxed, enjoyable, and easy to listen to.
yeah that was pretty good
Loved it, actually?! I didn't expect to like it so much. Stand-outs - Down by the River - Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets) - Cowgirl in the Sand
not bad
This songwriting is engaging and well paced. The performance is also very nice. It's a much more respectful use of Neil's voice than some of his other albums. It really represents the best of his ability. The production is simple but is very smooth and appropriate - nothing spectacular, but enough to appreciate. The instrumental is impressive (particularly some of the guitar work). It's also thoughtful, interesting, well performed, and at the end of the day very enjoyable. When it's time for the vocal to shine it's given space, as well as the guitar. I really enjoy the back and forth between the singing and the big instrumental sections. This is a good album. 4.1/5
Álbum com belas canções! Tudo aqui tem uma harmonia perfeita. Destaco o Contrabaixo em alguma faixas. TRI x HBB Kai.
I've tried quite hard with Neil Young in the past. I've had friends and musical collaborators who worshipped him, and honestly my attempts to understand it back then hit a dead end. I thought who the hell is this guy with the squeaky voice, and why do these songs take so long to get to such unrewarding hooks & chorus'. When he was set to headline Glastonbury I revisited the scene of the crime, sure I must have missed something. Taking his highest played tracks on Spotify felt like a surefire way in, if this didn't work nothing would. So I listened through and after a while I came away with 'Heart Of Gold', and a sense that there was just something I still wan't quite getting as nothing else stuck. Then I spent some time with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, where I found songwriting and performances that rung me dry on the first listen, and on every subsequent listen, so I can tell you it's nothing personal, that I just hadn't gotten Neil yet. So with that out of the way, lets talk about `Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere`. The album cover is strangely beautiful to the point that I actually kind of get lost in it, who isn't a sucker for a man and his dog? And you know what? It's quite a jam. The kind of energy I feel very satisfied to be working to, scratch that, I'm happy to be strutting through the streets of Soho to it. It's got `Withnail and I` vibes, for all I know it's featured on the soundtrack and I never noticed. The guitar solos are super satisfyingly meandering, the bass lines interesting enough to not get boring. And Neil's voice works here in a way I've not fully appreciated in my previous exploration of his solo work. `Down The River` has a Pink Floyd-ness to it that really works for me, I'm quite happy for it to go on and on. `The Losing End` again has a great mix, Neil's vocals shine and the hook is aching and familiar. `Cowboy In The Sand` is another standout for the same reasons. The record is a love affair with the competing tones of Neil's warble and the wail of the overdrive scratchy guitar. The hooks deliver hardest when accompanied by a swell of harmonies along with the lead vocal, and I'm sure that another listen would maybe yield the full emotional impact of the lyrics here. Maybe one day it will get it, and I'll look back and wonder how I let them wash over me without getting caught in the thorns when I was 34. But for now, my door is open for Neil Young again, we'll see if he ever shows up for tea.
How could you possible land two huge songs like Cowgirl in the sand, and Down by the river, in the same album? Wonderful album, epic songs. Immortal !
Very nostalgic, very seventies. I want to listen to it while reading a retro sci-fi novel.
Ahead of his time!!! 3 amazing songs Cowgirl in the Sand Cinnamon Girl Down by the River It’s the woman in me that makes me wanna play this game!
Somewhere between the roots of alt country and the 90s pacific northwest sound. At times sounds like Dino Jr years before J Mascis even knew what a Jazzmaster was.
Didn’t really like the first song, but the rest were the essence of Neil Young.
OK, so either this is a genuinely great Neil Young album, or I have now been forced to listen to so much Neil Young that I have finally become indoctrinated. My usual issue with Neil Young is that, despite great music and song writing, I find his vocal delivery so grating that it is precluded from the higher marks. Opening with the line "I wanna live with a cinnamon girl" did nothing to increase my confidence. But as I listened on, I was slowly won over. The music is excellent and Young keeps just to the controlled side of squeaking so that it sounds stylistic rather than annoying. There are some really cool rock tracks in this, like 'Cowgirl in the Sand' with it's bluesy, rambling, distorted guitar solos suddenly juxtaposed with Young's gentle singing. It's generally a really interesting blend of folk-rock-blues that I can really get into. I started listening to this expecting to give my stock Neil Young response but I have come away surprised and confused, trying to decide whether I have just discovered a great new album or I have developed Stockholm syndrome.
Not my favourite Neil Young album, but some interesting songs / compositions. Down by the River is a real NY song, some good warbling in his gravelly tones.
Enter Crazy Horse. Young's backing band Crazy Horse was on fire on Young's second album (Crazy Horse's first w/ Young) and play a large part in making EKTIN a highlight of 1969. EKTIN is almost another perfect Neil Young album brought down by Running Dry a song all but ruined by the godawful violin playing that makes the weakest song on the album even weaker. A real shame as EKTIN has some great songs that would become concert staples for decades (Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River & Cowgirl in the Sand) if only they had put Running Dry as the last song on side two I would have given this generally great album a solid 5/5 as it would be easy to just skip but it's heard before Cowgirl in the Sand. Dammit. Anyways EKTIN is still essential Neil Young just skip the painfully bad Running Dry and yes PAINFULLY BAD as it actually hurt my ears.
Home to one of the best one-note guitar solos of all time. One of NY's best
A delight!
Go the Crazy Horse
Cinnamon Girl and Down by the River are enough to put this high on the list, let alone the languid approach that makes space for serious fretwork and makes each song just build into a mini medicine ball that hits you in the gut
I Wanna Be Your Dog, который The Stooges выпустят через пару месяцев (возможно, вдохновившись в том числе и этим альбомом).
Round & round (it won't be long)
Excellent Album
The first song is quite different to Lana Del Rey's version. I love both of them, though (obviously) for completely separate reasons. Young's one takes an ultra-standard rock approach, kind of a mix of L.A. Woman, Brown Sugar, CCR's music, and some other circa-1970 greats. We continue with the short-track-length pattern with the short, pretty Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. It has an extremely simple chord progression, but this is pulled off with some fun guitar and vocal harmony lines. This is a good place to point out that Young's singing is pretty good. Not anything special, mind you, but easily better than half of this list (which seem to lean heavily on punk, Britpop, and low-calibre psychedelia – all of which notoriously have terrible vocals). Even if he's no Freddie Mercury, Young is a breath of fresh air. Down by the River is really where the album picks up steam. A 9-minute jam session alternating between the i and IV chords? What is this, Pink Floyd? (I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Floyd took heavy inspiration from Young and Crazy Horse here.) It's so familiar and yet so fresh. You don't hear much like this from 1969. There's a bit of a lull in the album with the slow, repetitive Running Dry – though the pulsating guitar sound keeps it fresh. It's the finale, Cowgirl in the Sand, that really ties everything together. Another two-chord jam, not as huge and impactful as Down by the River but still groovy as heck. I have to imagine the lyrics have some kind of social significance – particularly given Crazy Horse's namesake – but that's not how I judge music. 4/5 Key tracks: Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Down by the River
Solid album. Was originally gonna give it 3 stars cause no individual song really stood out, but overall it was just a great listen.
Really haven’t listened to enough Neil Young. Thoroughly enjoyed this
Neil Young with Crazy Horse is the best Neil Young
can't believe I've barely listened to anything by Neil Young. Cinnamon Girl was a very promising opening track especially the drums. Round and Round was beautiful, one of those ones where you forget where you are and just drift off. Guitar solo on Down By The River my goodness + the solos in-between verses on Cowgirl in the Sand
I love this album. Down by the river is as good as it gets, cinnamon girl and cowboy in the sand are fantastic, and the title track is beautiful. But running dry is fairly weak and the following album (see: born to run) eclipsed this easily so a 4 it is
Not my favorite Neil Young, but it feels very authentic and underproduced, in a good way. Solid, if a wee bit long in parts
mooi
Yeah baby!
I wanna live with a cinnamon girl!! give me more neil young pls
Pretty good. Highlights were Cinnamon Girl and Cowgirl in the Sand. 3.5/5 rounding up.
My family listens to a lot of Neil Young so this is nostalgic for me. I don’t think I’ve heard any of these songs before but I liked it
Neil Young?? This guys like 80!
On “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere,” Neil Young & Crazy Horse offer a healthy mix of early hard rock and country. The album's greatest strengths are the song-oriented arrangements and the band's tasteful interplay. In addition to one or two songs with hit potential, or at least catchy tunes, a slightly more mature production would have done it good. The sound is somewhat reminiscent of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Now, there are certainly worse references, but Jimi was a force of nature that was difficult to tame. Neil Young is definitely not in that category. Nevertheless, this album is well worth a listen!
I don't really like Neil Young but i love this album.
First thought was - not another Neil Young album but this was very nice. Laid back vibe, great guitar and bass playing. Will come back to this one.
Meget bra.
Okej, fajnie spoko. Nie jest to oszałamiające, ale daje to pewne poczucie przytulności i nostalgii jednocześnie.
Damn good. I’m hoping this is one of many NY albums on the generator. This is one I often go back to. Pretty much flawless but yeah, Running Dry is a slog. The rest of it is terrific with several standouts. A great into to NY for new fans. Best: Cinnamon Girl Worst: Running Dry
Tietysti toimii. Pitäisi kuunnella uudestaan kun ei jaksanut paneutua kunnolla. 3,75/5.
good country rock album, easy listening but good vibes.
i loved it
Ich will mit KI einen endlosen Gitarren-Track im „Cowgirl in the Sand“-Stil machen...
Nice, calm, summer with your granparents when you was a kid
This one really grew on me. Some great chilled tunes and the sounds is really interesting. Interesting background to how they recorded the album with very few rehearsals before recording.
short album but really sweet. i'm a big fan of neil's voice, especially loved round & round. have never been big on country type stuff but this got me somewhere deep down
neil young. classic!! hard to rank his discography but all i know is this is a good one
Relaxing and a little rough around the edges. Faves: Cinnamon Girl, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, The Losing End
Surprisingly good
Classic album by a goat! 7.6/10
It was OK I gave it a 77/100 I’m interested in checking out his other stuff though. Favorite Track(s): Down By The River
As if to prove my point from my comments on yesterdays album, the algorithm does me a dirty and delivers me yet another Neil Young album, this time with Crazy Horse. I hadn't heard this before but I do know a couple of the songs from it. It's another great one, Young was really on fire for this stretch of albums. This has a raw energy to it that he perhaps polished a little more on later releases but I enjoy the rough and readiness here.
The instrumentals in 'Down by the River' are very nice like 'Running Dry' too instrumentals in general are just great
Очень крутой кантри альбом, даже буду слушать некоторые песни
No one song stands out as a real winner but overall easy listening. Love Neil young, just not one of his more memorable installations.
Humbly audacious. Down by the River is 557 seconds of sonic perfection.
Parts of this we're beautiful but I lacked interest.
Classic Neil throwback
Very good
What an amazing album. Great tunes, production is perfect
Cinnamon Girl is a surprisingly hard rocking opener, but the side is anchored by Down by the River, the rambling epic with its sultry bassline and guitar licks. On side two, Running Dry is another winner, dirge-like with noisy violins. Then the long closer, Cowgirl in the Sand, hits immediately with the best groove on the record and some of the best guitar work. I think this is better than Down by the River. It's a great sounding record in stereo. Satisfying guitar and bass tone and Neil's voice is excellent here. Not everything can live up to the quality of the two long songs, but it doesn't really matter. Apologies to Mr. Young, I was unfamiliar with your game.
Listened previously. Expectations: High - Verdict: Great - Fantastic solo debut. Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand are stunners, Cinnamon Girl is a very strong opener as well.
Pretty easy rock. Never really listened to Young, but I enjoyed it more than I expected. Good variety. Standouts: Cinnamon Girl Everybody knows this is nowhere Cowgirl in the Sand 4
Generally, I liked the sound of the album. I will definitely listen to some of the songs, but I wouldn't say it will be one of my top albums.
cover art is giving cool dude energy we love mountains and dogs but ik that’s not what I’m supposed to be evaluating… listened to this while studying and it was mellow enough to be good study music but I do NOT like the song about shooting someone down by the river. jail. the violin in running dry was awesome tho
Cinnamon Girl was unexpectedly upbeat for Neil Young. The middle of the album was what I expected - drawling, folksy, thin. Running Dry and Cowgirl in the Sand were great, vibey, with long instrumental excursions that kept my interest.
Great lyrics and sound. Southern twangy rock but not in a bad way.
Not sure what I expected but this was incredibly pleasant. I feel like I'm slowly puffing on a cigar, rocking in a chair while watching the sunset over the mountain range. Faithful dog by my side. No where to be, nothing to do but enjoy the earth and its beauty. At peace. Definitely "grandpa" music but I genuinely enjoyed this. Stand out is Running Dry, but this is definitely a full album listening experience! 8/10
7.4
Its really pretty, I think I would have really enjoyed it more if I could have been sitting around a fire or out in nature but overall it was still enjoyable.
This is some great guitar playing. Really enjoy the creative guitar riffing. I like it more each time I listen to it!
Thwop!! Cinnamon Girl and that baller riff kick things off REALLY well. Neil spends the rest of the record doing what Neil does well, ambles around the campfire with various tales of life. If some songs go on for so long it’s because Neil is letting the music breathe, as heard on Down By The River and Cowgirl In The Sand.
I really enjoyed this. I guess this was very unrehearsed and they were all new to playing together. He wanted to show the sounds that naturally came out of them without much tweaking. I'd say they vibed well off the bat! There's a softness to this that feels very cozy and homey. He's a great songwriter too.
The pinnacle of "Sitting around the living room with your boys talking shit and passing around a joint" rock music. Thumbs up.
Love Neil young this was fire
I liked it!
A classic listen I used to grow up with.
Really enjoyed this. Cinnamon Girl, Down By The River and Cowgirl in the Sand all very good. Solid instrumentation, very little nasal whining and even the long guitar noodling ones were good. Laid back country rock. Glad the fiddle was only prominent on just the one track. And Round and Round track less enjoyable. 4.3
Was feeling Neil Young ennui heading into this one but really enjoyed the longer jammy tracks, not sure the other albums so far had this. The Clear influence on Wilco was interesting. Ended up going 4 for 4 for 4 stars so far, but this May be the one I will return too most again.
Really good. Almost a five but will hold off for rust never sleeps.

Normally don't like extended jams in the middle of songs. Crazy Horse is the notable exception to this rule, and this album has two incredible long jams on it ("Down By the River" and "Cowgirl In the Sand"). Plus it has "Cinnamon Girl". A couple of the other songs don't quite rise to the levels of those three songs *cough* "The Losing End *cough*, but it's still a high 4 star album for me.
When to listen: Fall, Berkshires, homey-vibes
I never understood why Neil Young is known as the Godfather of Grunge until I heard this
ROUND AND ROUND AND ROUND WE SPIN!!!!!!!!!! i know that down by the river is probably highly regarded but i didn't LOVE it only because i feel like it was one constant guitar solo. i thought it was a cool song, however did not feel it was worth putting on a playlist like how i felt with 'everybody knows this is nowhere' and 'round & round' and 'the losing end' i really enjoyed running dry i liked the lyrics a lot and it was a nice switch up from the other songs in the album. i was not expecting that lengthy strings solo i enjoyed cowgirl in the sand, i knew what i was getting into with it being 10 minutes long, so i expected more of insanely long solos. however, i sort of enjoyed the neverending soloing because it differed from music in the 21st century with programmed outlines that describe rules for music.
Cinnamon Girl - overdrive guitar and tight vocals. Good for road trip montage. Interesting bridge that goes off the main idea. Dark outro. 8.7/10 Everybody knows this is nowhere - interesting timing and progression. Small town feeling lyrics. Silly background vox. Easy drummin. Simple and sweet 8.3/10 Round and Round (It won't be long) - Sweet acoustic strumming and tender vocal harmonies. Makes me want to learn it. Sunset sounds and yearning words. Waltzing. 9.1/10 Down by the River - Cool and quiet. Nighttime stroll or drive. Floaty harmonies that harken back to the early 60s. Bad boy chorus. Very long. Guitar solo city. 8.4/10 The losing end (when you're on) - independent guy making his way through life. Very classic chords almost beatly. Drums are kind of grating. A little silly. 8.0/10 Running dry (requiem for the rockets) - violin/fiddle and 6/8 makes it feel almost Irish. A little slow for my taste. 7.8/10 Cowgirl in the sand - rolling fingerpicked electric intro. Sounds like a finale. Also very long but fittingly so. 8.8/10 Average - 8.44
Bit of country rock, really big fan of this genre….have added some songs to my liked playlist, however the songs seem to go on forever. Brilliant guitar in ‘down by the river’ 7/10
Great record
As a fan of Neil Young, I’ve always struggled with understanding him, as I’ve formed an opinion of him as a grouchy genius couple contrarian musician who would turn on you the moment you agreed with him. This is the pioneering album for his heavy sound with Crazy Horse, which would later make him the “godfather of grunge” in the early 90s: it’s several of the big hits mixed in with listenable cuts on par with the country rock sound that Young and his contemporaries (like The Grateful Dead) would kind of accidentally create. This album never seems to crack a top 100 rock album list for some reason — it’s probably one more classic cut away — but it’s still really great and should be in a vinyl collection.
idk it’s like kinda funky but like it’s also kinda like a good mix between like old/classic but not like to old?
On the basis of hearing 1 Neil Young song in my life ("Old Man") I expected this album to contain a lot more whinging and much less (no?) Electric Guitar. I was very wrong and this jammed very hard. What a sound, 4.5 stars
Voi eemeli kuinka chilliä meininkiä!
I really enjoyed this album. There are some great base lines especially on Cowgirl in the sand and down by the river
Χριστουγεννιάτικα
This is so badass. Neil Young is 2 for 2 so far on this list. Never heard this one before and it might become a favorite.
C’était vraiment très sympa à écouter!
It was a lovely experience to listen to this album!
Fav: Down By The River Least Fav: Running Dry (Requiem For The Rockets) Didn’t find a single crazy horse
Kinda folksy, but I dig it
Classic. Folky but very good.
Classic Neil
Yeah, dude we all know.
I’ve only heard some of these songs in a greatest hits context so it was nice hearing them sprinkled in with some songs I’ve never heard. Definitely an essential Neil Young album. Favorite tracks: down by the river, cowgirl in the sand
I’m starting to think that rating an album after hearing it once it’s too hard, so I listened to this twice. There’s something about Neil Young that gets to my soul. Overall really good songs, I particularly liked The Losing End
Like this one
Great instrumentation. Good lyrics.
reminds me of pink floyd a little bit, not sure if thats crazy. enjoyable instrumental work, great vocals and engaging rock elements throughout
It's a huge task to stay on the level of an opener like Cinnamon Girl, but Neil Young and Crazy Horse nail it. Very, very solid. No skips.
Favourite Track: Everybody Knows This is Nowhere
1st NY & CH record I got, ca. 1996? Probably from the Guitar Player (maybe Guitar for the Practicing Musician? no, because I think it was a 30th Anniversary issue) magazine recommendation? I still can't get enough of the Down By The River solo, an absolute electric guitar all-timer. Not my favorite NY & CH album, but was much easier to come by than Time Fades Away, On the Beach or Tonight's The Night way back in the 20th C. I don't like any of the ballads on Everybody Knows... as much as the title track of On the Beach, but that's not to say Running Dry is a bad song.
Neil Young is pretty dang consistent.
I discovered I love Neil Young.
I like his voice
Another one of Neil's finest.
classic neil very pleasant no complaints
Good album, long songs but consistently interesting and returning to themes a true album experience
TBA
A handful of hard-rocking classics and some nice softer folk tunes, but the title song is my personal favorite. To me this is one of Neil’s best albums, including his work with CSNY. The lead guitar playing feels a bit sloppy and out of rhythm at times, but I think that contributes to the loose feel he was after.
Knew a few tracks, plus a couple new tracks. Overall a good album.
Fantastic. Idk if this is a hot take but I enjoyed this more then after the gold rush
"Everybody knows this is nowhere" är Neils jämnaste och mest koncentrerade album, visst det kanske saknar en "Heart of gold" eller "Only love can break your heart". Men jag saknar inte den typen av adelsmärkeslåt här, för mig blir jämnheten styrkan. Det här är ett album jag spelar från första till sista ton, varje gång. Det är en fyra på undre halvan
i liked more than anticipated. it was easy background listening while driving around in the snow.
Lp
Gritty, amazing tone on everything, good production great lyrics.
Probably difficult to judge in 2025 on how this was received back in '69. Is it unfair to say it's easy (to) listen(ing)?
Neil Young sits comfortably among the top folk artists, and somehow also earns a spot as one of the weakest folk vocalists out there. The irony works in his favor. The voice might be rough, but the songwriting is undeniable. This album carries some of his strongest folk cuts. "Down By The River" is iconic, the harmonies are tight, and you can hear exactly why Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young exploded once they joined forces. The guitar work on this album is great, such simplicity but with so much feeling and soul. The record holds its ground from front to back, but it never fully lands that knockout moment. A track like "Running Dry" tries to be haunting but never really breaks new ground. Neil Young is absolutely one of the greats. This album is iconic, no question, but he’s put out work with more weight and more staying power. Solid, memorable, but not his peak. 8.5/10.
One time in college, I was riding with my friend Tony (who is a great musician) and he was playing a Neil Young tape. I didn’t know who it was, and actually thought it was a female singer. Boy, was my face red.
Neil is all about emotion and groove, and he brings both to this album. Blues are definitely more forgiving.
4, maybe eve 4.5* on this one! I'm know, I'm surprised, too. I like Neil's songwriting, in general, but his vocals are hit or miss with me. He's got it dialed in to my tastes on this one, though. Maybe it's the harmonies in the choruses? Just jammy enoungh without getting monotonous, too. Well done, Mr. Young. I'll probably come back to this one.
Cowgirl in the Sand is a 5
Honestly, I just really enjoyed this record. Even with some songs going for 9+ minutes, every song stuck with me in one way or another. I’m excited to hear more Neil in the future because I know he has even better records later. Regardless, this album was awesome and one I will keep in my catalog.
Very cool rock from the 60s. Unfortunately this also means 60s production value.
Great stuff, not my favorite of Neil Young's, but this rocks.
i think this records good, but kinda in over its head at points. at some points it tries to do these long guitar solo parts, but Neil (or whoever’s playing lead guitar) has a very simple guitar style, and that leads to those sections feeling kinda boring. 7.8/10
This was my wake up call that Neil young rocks. Who knew?
Cool, I like my boy Neil and never heard this one! I generally like his acoustic stuff more, Round & Round is quite good The instrumental breaks starting in down by the river are soo slick and awesome, great song The vocal melody in the chorus of the losing end reminds me of a bowie song
Best Song: Cinnamon Girl This wasn't bad. It has some really good songs and some ok songs. A few drag a bit but overall not too shabby. 4/5.
I’m going to be saying this a lot more now we’re in the final 50, but maybe this should be a wrap for Neil Young. We’ve heard some great stuff from him. This was good but kind of felt like he was on autopilot. Very jammy. Light 4.
Happy birthday to Neil Young who is 80 today. I was about 20 when I first started paying much attention to Neil's music. 80 ÷ 20 = 4. Which seems like a fair ranking for this album. Cowgirl in the Sand is my favourite song of his, but specifically the 18 minute live version while the studio version here is a slimmed down 10 minutes only.
Knew half the songs from passive exposure. Worth paying attention to!
Solid all the way through. Grungy rock that I wouldn't have associated with Neil before listening - just because I don't really ever listen to him.
Classic Neil. Feels good man.
Ei parasta mutta silti ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I really like this one. I really liked how raw this sounded, much more rock influenced than my other favoring by Neil Young -- After the Goldrush. This is something I'll definitely add to the rotation.
I somehow ended up liking the really long tracks the best on this one which is usually not how it goes. Both of them are 50% or more guitar solos and somehow pulls that off without becoming repetitive and boring which is otherwise usually what happens for me when they are that long. These kept me engaged and that's a sign of some great work. Standouts Down by the River Running Dry Cowgirl in the Sand 4/5
A good neil young album, listened to it on the plane. Good variety, instrumentals and musicality. Listenable and accessible too. 4/5
solid album, liked cinnamon girl the best on first listen
One of the guys who can get away with making 10 minute songs, and tbh that’s such a compliment in itself that I don’t think this really needs that much else of an extensive review. Just a good listen. And so recognisable.
I enjoyed every minute. Couple of absolute classics on this album. My favourite is Down by the River. In overall one of the best from Young. Nothing to complain about.
Guitar playing seems to be carrying this album. Down by the river has amazing guitar riffs, and is a really good song. Overall the album is decent, it has aged really well, and is hard to imagine it being from the 60's.
BEAST!
Some of the songs are very instrument-heavy (e.g. Cowgirl in the Sand). Perfect country-rock for nice background.
Up until a few years ago, if you’d have asked me if I was a Neil Young fan, I would’ve replied with an emphatic no. Then, in some miraculous moment, Harvest Moon (the song, not the album) found me. I fell in love with it, which subsequently relaxed my dislike for Neil Young. Since then, I’ve been a very casual fan, attending two of his Harvest Moon gatherings and enjoying hearing his music randomly. This is the first full-length album I’ve listened to by him. Oddly enough, the tracks that bookend this album didn’t do it for me. If this album was a sandwich, I’d make it keto: forgo the bread and just keep the cheese and meat inside because, damn, it’s delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed tracks 2-6, which surprised me quite a bit. The writing is interesting, harmonies are beautiful, and some of those crunchy guitar solos are so tasty. I certainly understand his appeal now and look forward to listening to more of his albums.
I think Neil Young had to bring other people into his music in order to sound good
4/5 I can listen to this over and over while I putter around my lovely home.
Banger fr, very good jams, very concise.
Five good songs and two greats make up this first collaboration between Neil Young and Crazy Horse, hinting at the ragged magnificence they'd conjur up over the coming decades. Totally of its time, this album adds some much needed dirt to that folksy consciousness. Favourite tracks: Down By The River, Cowgirl In The Sand
solid Neil Young album
Growing up, my brother and I would watch the 'Rust Never Sleeps' concert film all the time, and it's probably why I enjoy live albums so much. It also made me appreciate Neil Young as much as I do. Not my favorite Neil Young album, but one that has some of my favorite Neil Young songs. I could listen to "Cinnamon Girl" and "Down By the River" on repeat and probably never get tired. It feels like a very long album for just 7 songs, but nonetheless a very complete collection.
Me, three days ago: I don’t like Neil Young’s voice Me, today: has listened to this album like 5 times and owns it on vinyl Neil young has grown on me, and I’m pretty sure Crazy Horse is bringing the best clean and lightly overdriven guitar sound I’ve ever heard. Down by the river might be a top song for me now. It took about twenty albums in to this thing, but I’m fully appreciating the value of re-listening to an album. This one really clicked some neural pathways into place in my cranium. I’ve always had the tendency to fly through an album/movie/book/game and rarely revisit it. There’s just so much content to consume these days, so once I’ve heard an album I’ve been like ✅ and moved on right away. So thank you Neil Young and thank you Crazy Horse for getting me to slow down and appreciate the additional brush strokes and colors that each listen of an album can provide.
This is a good 70's roots-rock record. I can see why fans would be still pulling this off the rack 50 years later.
Sauceometer: Upper Borderline Vibe: Post-Apocalyptic Wasteland Downtime What was I doing: showering/making your soup at night in the break room because you forgot to eat it for lunch/taking the subway home Favorite Song(s): Cinnamon Girl/Running Dry Blurb: Really beautiful melancholic folk album. I see the progression that got him to after the gold rush now
Cinnamon Girl lol. Sus song title bro. P good though. Down by the River is a classic with awesome psychedelic guitar playing. I like the Meters cover better but deep appreciation for this song. Cowgirl in the Sand is sick. Neil Young is cool because he’s a songwriter who is also a rocker. Most of the songwriters of this era were pop or folk. There are some really folksy song on here I don’t love but some absolute shredders as well.
Perfect example of why you keep an album short, 40 minutes of quintessential folk rock, another genre defining album. No duds I'm the bunch, Cinnamon Girl is an awesome opener.
For a guy who has 7,000 albums and musical directions, this is really one of Neil Young’s best. This is an album that I love and was due for a revisit, but between “Cinnamon Girl” (way harder guitar tone than I remember), “Down by the River” the title track and “Cowgirl in the Sand”, this is basically a greatest hits for ‘60s Neil. Also his first album with Crazy Horse and it sounds fantastic in the remastered edition…a couple of the slower songs go on too long is the only thing preventing it from being a 5 star.
Yeah, this was great.
Genre defining, the album where NY figures out his sound, both individually as a guitar player, and collectively with Crazy Horse as an arranger and writer.
Listen, I like Neil Young lots, and this is a record I hadn’t heard before and I really liked it, but I’ve been doing this for six days and I’ve had three Neil Young records already. I’m begging for some variety here.
Didn’t expect to like this but I did, good album
Some flat moments, but overall.. a Neil Young album I actually enjoyed!! 3.5
I'm not the world's biggest NY fan but good gracious the man is consistent. Just tons of great sounding stuff one track after another. I didn't really LOVE any of this, though Cinnamon Girl is pretty great, but as a collection this is just really solid.
Better than that never sleep, more groovy
gracious me
Probably the best folk rock album I’ve listened to thus far on this list. An all time classic
The two peaks here are clearly the extended jams of Down By The River and Cowgirl In The Sand. Neil and Crazy Horse just kick ass. Cinnamon Girl is also a great song. Not huge on the title track and Running Dry which holds this back from being a 5.
Ikke visste æ at Everybody Knows (this is nowhere) va en coverlåt da æ hørte Dar Williams sin versjon, men Neil Young sin va jo ikke så ille den heller. Ganske fint generelt sett, æ likte det.
Much better than the last Neil Young album on here. I haven't listen to this in a while but it's great
Very good, should’ve watched this guy at glasto instead of the howler of a performance by charli xcx
So much promise for an early career record, and some songs that would stand the test of time - more of this please
Good album. Couple of long songs, but I enjoyed the music a lot. 3.5 / 5 stars
I feel like they put this album on here over other Neil young albums to be niche or something. Fav song: the losing end (when you’re on). This was a solid album but I think I’m just spoiled because I’ve listened to other Neil young albums and I like them a lot more.
Neil Young! Overall a very good album, but he definitely gets better in the 70s. Neil Young is such a good songwriter. His sense of rhythm for guitar parts is also great. Beyond praise for Neil Young the album itself is good, but doesn’t stand out that much in the rest of his discography imo. Nothing is worse per say, it just doesn’t click like After the Gold Rush or Rust Never Sleeps. Down by the river is a great song. Standout tracks: Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River, Cowgirl in the Sand 3.5/5 deserves to be on this list
I enjoyed some songs but some of it was a bit country
Once again, an album I never ever would have listened to if it were not for this generator. I was shocked that I liked most of the songs. Normally I listen to songs that I myself would cover vocally...these rock/folk ish albums I have been getting hit me in a different way. This one in particular made me feel like I was laying in the grass in the 70's just chillin and thinking about life. It just gave me a sense of peace. So overall, a very good surprise album!
Love Neil Young. Definitely not his best work, but still good.
I recently reviewed "After the Gold Rush" and that must have finally put Neil Young into the list of my summary's favourite artists. Rightly so, easily. Which is something I've learned. This one here ... might not contribute to it, but neither detract. It's Jamming Rock Young. Crazy Horse Young? I'm more down with Folk Young. But there's some sloppy, loose Grunge here, which is pretty great. A cozy album, at the same time. It's nice. There another bit on my summary, however, one of the entries under Worst Genres which reads Country. So I'm afraid my bottom line enjoyment was a bit tainted by the title track and "Losing End". A really damn strong 4 though.
Ok Neil I didn't know you got down like that, you are one groovy motherfucker and all it took you was a trial run with your debut album. Right after leaving Buffalo Springfield Neil jumped right back into a brand new group, Crazy Horse, and made sure he would get the recognition he deserved by making himself the main centerpiece of the band. This album is much more Rock oriented than Neil's usual solo Folk sound, and honestly I much prefer what he is doing with Crazy Horse if you ask me. This album shows range and craftsmanship from all of the musicians attached as they are able to switch up emotions, genres, and even soundscapes quite a good bit all across this album's runtime while also having 2 long songs where they still keep the momentum going. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere is an impressive sophomore/debut album that shows a whole lot of character and leadership from Neil as he manages to really guide this band to greatness. Makes me really excited to see what else he has up his sleeve later down the line, but I feel I need to finish up some other loose ends before I start diving into him more.
The blueprint for the 'Neil Young Sound'. I was hesitant to even give it a spin at first being pretty familiar with these songs over the years but I'm glad I did. I always seem to like the Crazy Horse stuff. Hearing the full album in order really gave me a lift.
Out of the gate, you cannot hear Neil's voice so much on a few of the tracks. This is maybe a little calm but I like it out of the gate. Lamenting strings on Running Dry were so good. Listened before? Y Saved tracks? Y Favorite tracks? Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Really liked it (in spite of the voice). Saved several tracks
Cowgirl in the sand is a pretty awesome song Will I listen to again: 61%

Neil Young has better albums but this one started it all.
One of my regular albums, an old favorite.
