Reviews (page 11 of 14)

Idk doet echt niks voor me.

Some classics, quite some screaming

I didn't like it all that much, kinda bland

let's begin with the fact that i love Prince, ok? Fav: "Let's Go Crazy" (I mean the ending is just something and i love "Kingsman" too, so it is a perfect shot), "Darling Nikki" (WOW gurl!), "Baby I'm a Star" (really caught my attention). and a separate paragraph for... PURPLE RAIN, i feel it with all my heart and think of the farm Canigea... it's such a shame... it is such a bitchy rock star album that is just roaring and i like it! and the comosition of songs is like a cake with a cherry on top. ma bella...

Some good songs (Purple Rain, Lets Go crazy) but sometimes Prince tries to do too much.

Good Album. Wouldve been a 4 but Prince moans in my ears 20% too much

Some nice songs but I'm not incredibly impressed by the record. Favorite Songs: Darling Nikki ; Purple Rain

me gustaron algunas canciones

As a fan of other 80s synth pop/rock this album doesn't do much for me. Seemingly universally loved, and with a few undeniable bangers, I found the first half pretty dull and overall pretty meh. Not my cup of tea.

Parts of this album are dated and grating. Other parts are bangers.

Mysterious, electric, defiant, abusive, violent, talented, gifted, genius, sick, twisted, high, delusional, horrible, perverted, legendary man. The quintessential rock star. A songwriter and performer of unmatched capabilities, burning the candle at both ends for his entire adult life until his lavish debauchery finally caught up with him. We don't have to "separate the art from the artist" to enjoy this album. The artist is the art. In fact, what other musician represented the unpredictability of their music? It's a beautiful piece of work, brimming with so much lust that Purple Rain was one of the reasons the Parental Advisory sticker exists. He scared people because his music seemed so exotic and taboo, but also because he was a violent man who should never be alone with someone's teenage daughter. What a force to be reckoned with. "Are we gonna let the elevator bring us down?" Yes. You died in an elevator, buddy. Good job practicing what you preach. Oh, and the music is fine. Not really my thing. But Let's Go Crazy still rocks. Who doesn't love a good guitar solo?

The lasts songs were brilliant omg!!!

I'm really not keen on Purple Rain (the song) and I also don't like When Doves Cry (also the song) but there were a few deeper cuts here that I really enjoyed. I like his upbeat, funky numbers a lot more than the slow, ballady stuff but it's very hard to shake the feeling that overly 80s production gives me so there was always going to be a hard ceiling on this. It's more or less the epitome of the decade.

overall the album has very catchy music, all of the songs have a really good beat and melody especially purple rain i love the vocals!! the overall vibe of this album however isn’t really my cup of tea and although i genuinely think all the songs are great, they aren’t songs that i would be listening to daily. i rate it a 3/5

Prince was a singular talent. I loved his guitar playing and stage persona. This album had some great tunes, but ultimately it’s not my style. For those whose style it is, it probably gets a 5/5 but alas not for me.

overhyped

Prince has a quite frankly ridiculous number of albums to explore, and this is probably one of his most broadly appealing ones. Still, despite the highs, there's some tracks that miss a bit for me so I can't quite push this into the 4 territory.

Purple rain saves the album

First time I've given this a chance despite how good they tell me it is. Its ok.

prob would've been a bit better if i was on that 80s come

May be a little too 80s for me. I didn't hate it and really love a few of the songs on this album but I don't think I can rate it above a 3.

This is one of those classic albums that I never really got into. I knew the big songs (When Doves Cry and Purple Rain) and I think I somewhat knew some others (Let's Go Crazy and maybe I Would Die 4 U). The sound is definitely 80's and I don't think it's aged as well as some other music. Totally recognize that he's an icon and I think he's a very talented guitarist/etc, but not my thing.

honestly had high expectations bc i rly liked sign o the times but i found this one to be a bit lackluster

Some of the best songs ever on this album but I just cant seem to feel the rest of the music and always loose interest. :(

Som total 80´s. Batida balada c/ letra desafiadora e atrevida p/época. Crítica a Hollywood, gostei do seu lado witty. No entanto... too slow p/mim. A última recordou-me a Judge Judy do Tyler,The Creator(2024), poderá ter sido inspiração perhaps. Nada muito memorável, wouldn´t re-spin.

this is a classic that ive never dedicated the time to properly listen to; you see, i say i like movies and I havent seen citizen kane first few tracks are a bit of a weak start but from the beautiful ones it gets wild wild, it was great when the synth and his voice kinda mixed and followed eachother phrasings but from there the masterful guitar playing and vocal performances just steal the focus of attention on the next few songs i feel like the singles are the weakest part of the album they feel like watered down for mass appeal, understandable being a soundtrack for a movie, cash rules, but i think i will find the better prince outside of this project imma go against the waves here because, as a whole, the album didnt do much for me

This was much more enjoyable than I thought it would be.

Good album

Not a Prince fan at all but I have this album bought cheaply at a charity shop only because it is regarded as a significant album in the history of modern music. As Prince albums go I must agree with the majority that this is his best and even I found myself giving a slight head nod or bum wiggle when listening. To elicit this movement from me is quite rare so an extra star for that. 3/5 21/3/26

3.5 stars

If it weren't for purple rain it would be a 2 for me

This was a fun album, I was a little dubious in the first half but by the end I felt I understood the appeal. The title track is such a banger, great way to close out the album

Spesielt Take Me With U og The Beautiful Ones fikk jeg sansen for.

Temazos

Good, and overall? Aight!

Pretty good.

Obviously it’s a big influential record, and there are some great songs on it, but a lot of it feels stuck in it’s era instead of timeless. Also not a fan of prince going shriek mode

i can’t get over the fact that he’s a quasiwitness it’s a mental block his lyrics disturb me but i really like this for what it is

Lots of interesting sounds and life. Just not my jam though

When Doves Cry is one of the best songs of all time.

It was drawn for me after Bowie and unfortunately it disappointed me. I expected something less pop and less monotonous, although Purple Rain is iconic. 6/10

Uneven overall, the good songs are very good. Three stars. Tom.

Sometimes it just works (When Doves Cry, Purple Rain) and other times it feels like musical whack a mole where Prince is directing his not inconsiderable talents in a thousand directions, screeching, singing, synth noises, general camp 80s pop done at 100 miles an hour. He was a generational artist but an acquired taste and it can feel like hard work at times. But when it’s good, it’s really good.

I do appreciate the full throttle and atmospheric vibe he brings. The last album I complained about the excess of musicality that blew the good away in the "noise" this does not appear on this album. I still believe that Prince is a master at musical craft and enjoy that he brings his unique passion to the music. It's vibrant and interesting and for a pop classic it ticks those boxes strongly. I have grown in my liking of prince as it is standout album today happily zips through without being a chore. Just shame it's not really my style but I appreciate the merit.

I can see why this is top pop music. It's interesting, varied, and musically complex. Upbeat but still has depth. There are a couple of tracks that are peak 80's pop music and forever cemented as classics. My issue with this is purely one of taste. I'm just not into this hyper camp, synth pop sound. It's too upbeat and polished for me. Certainly don't begrudge it when it's done this well but not something I'll be listening to by choice.

Aww. My first Prince album. The ladies love him, though I'm not sure why, given he looks like an emaciated goblin. I laugh at those people who claim 'that solo' is the greatest guitar solo of all time. But credit for playing most of the instruments on most of your songs yourself - that's a hell of a lot better than being able to dance and mime. But I've never liked Prince. Don't like his voice,.don't like the reliance on pansy funk. I've maybe heard less than ten songs from him throughout my life - a tiny fraction of the prolific guy's output - and have liked none of them. Some of those are on this album. Which I am about to listen to, in full, for the first time. While it's true the sound is horribly dated and exceedingly 80s, it's very well produced. The opening track is cheesy as hell with a cringe spoken intro, but solid guitar outro. The second song is almost good - ruined by poor vocals and out of place violin parts, a shame because the underlying strings and melody are solid. I knew the Hoffs version before hearing this. The third is more cheese, with lots of silly vocal yelps, spoken parts, and cheesy synths. I was ready to hate Computer Blue after the first minute, but the last half saves it. The next track confirms that the lad was indeed a dirty little goblin, but he sings it well. When Doves Cry I already knew and never cared for. I Would Die 4 U is fine - again I knew it from the Hoffs cover. Next one is throwaway, and Purple Rain makes sense as the closer but is one I knew and again never thought much of. It's fine, overrated. So, done. It's fine, overrated sums up the album. People love it and hold it in high esteem and that's cool. I never grew up with it and was always a bigger Jackson and Madonna fan. I don't doubt the lad's creativity and talent, but his music (hear at least) doesn't speak to me in any meaningful way. It's just another pop album from a time gone by - a time I lived through - but which shows all the hallmarks of how silly that time often was.

Boooring with banger.

Classic

ok - definitely better than sign o the times. I like when he leans more towards rock and away from 80s carnival music

I really loved this one back in the day. Looking back it was because of three songs.

fun. but enough prince now.

Some very good songs-When Doves Cry, Take Me With U, Let‘s Go Crazy and Purple Rain- and a bunch of fairly dated, cheesy 80s tracks outside of these. Not a masterpiece, as many say, but worth a listen for the singles.

I was was looking forward to hear this as I love the singles and yeah, the singles were a welcome respite from otherwise uninspiring tracks. It's a good album, but not great.

Honestly was expecting more from the album just think I’m not a big fan of prince really

Perhaps the hottest take of all but Prince's voice drives me nuts in a bad way sometimes. After talking to some friends after this generator gave me "Sign O' The Times" I do agree that Prince is more of a "Greatest Hits" artist rather than one who creates incredible front-to-back albums. Although I think Purple Rain is about 60% bangers, which in my opinion encompasses "Take Me With U" as well as all 4 of the final tracks on this record. Better than Sign O The Times but I think I'm definitely not a Prince fan overall

I think I prefer Prince as a collaborator rather than their solo work. It's definitely not boring though!

Better than 1999! Still pretty cheesy though and not something I can see myself wanting to go back to. Well performed produced and mixed though

It’s not my favorite type of music, at least not in this moment. The album is really old, the songs are good and my English sucks but I think the lyrics are about optimism, love, happiness, etc.

Much like Michael Jackson's "Thriller," I'm left feeling like I should like this album more than I do given how critically acclaimed it is. I guess I like Prince more as an icon/weirdo/inspiration for one of the greatest sketches of all time than I do as an artist. Kinda like with David Bowie--I respect him as an artist, but personally I don't particularly enjoy his art. This ends up as another "good for what it is, but it ain't for me." This album is very much of its time. 2.9

Not really feeling this until the titular track. Excellent piece of music that one. For the rest of this album, not really anything to comment about.

From all this album my fav song became Purple rain and maybe the only song that I truly liked and will listen to again, other one are not so bad either just not really my vibe

Really nice album.

Som absolute jams on here. Title track is one of the best of all time. But man, the rest of the album was just 80’s cheese

I still don’t quite know how this artist is as popular as he is. He’s clearly very talented but this music doesn’t stir anything in me.

It’s fine. I’m just not a Prince fan so while I didn’t mind listening to this while I was working, it’s not something I would ever choose to listen to for fun.

I understand many people love this album. I never did, and this listen didn't change that opinion. It's way too much of a pop album for my tastes. I much prefer Prince's earlier work that is funkier. Just my opinion and good on you if you find more joy in this one than I do.

a little freaky, but had a few really enjoyable songs

Хоть Принц сам as a human being is more than life itself, альбом для меня оказался совсем не timeless, хотя как экскурс в 1984 интересно и многие details понравились

Baby I’m a Star.

if the whole album was just purple rain on repeat it would be an easy 5

i’m kinda shocked but other than the songs i already knew and loved… i kinda hated the rest of the album

Maybe again just too 80’s for me

I like When Doves Cry and the title track, but I'm baffled as to why people love this album so much.

“Hey, i aint go no money” says the multimillionaire

I think I only liked Purple Rain just a little, and that's it. The other songs were average for me, nothing memorable, except for Darling Nikki for obvious reasons, still tho I don't think Prince is a bad musician, just this album in particular wasn't my thing

Good but I mostly just like the singles.

Not bad, pretty chill.

I appreciate Prince, but he’s just not my cup of tea

PURPLE RAIN = GOAT SONG.

Straight heaters out here

The singles are 4s, most of the rest are 2s. Very much of its time. I don't quite get Prince. He could have had an outstanding rock band but he chose pop and manufactured funk.

I have nothing bad to say about this album - it's a masterpiece in its own right, with funky melodies, sexy vocals (or screams) and a lot of zany musical ideas. That being said, it's really, really not my kind of music. No matter how good the production is, it still sounds terribly 80s (my Nemesis era), with all the gimmicks and cheesiness of that time period. The perpetually overexcited vibe is also exhausting, and I can only listen to a few tracks at a time before my brain starts hurting. Subjectively speaking it would be a 2* for me, but I'll add one star for Prince's obvious talent and the huge influence of this album. It still beats Michael Jackson any day of the week. 5/10

I never really got the hype for the genius. But this album I did listen a lot at the time( teenage). And my friends and I had enough command of English to understand that Nikky was a something of a girl! Getting back I still favour this song, probably because the sung melody is not parasited by synth. Overall, it seems very minimalistic in arrangements and I do think he would have been better off working with musicians. 3 only because I make me feel nostalgic of the carelessness era that is teenagehood (and Nikky).

Some greatness and some 80s shit. Better than the previous one we had in my opinion, but aside of the hit singles, I really struggled to end the listening. But I will go back on it and digest it better. I want to understand was the man has been seen as a genius.

I always suspected that I don’t like Prince - now I know it for sure. Anyhow it wasn’t that bad - I see that the album is well made and can be enjoyable for others

He's a pioneer and a generational legend, but I couldn't fully get behind it. I see where others would like it, I just can't do the screeching (for instance, in 'the beautiful ones') 5/9 tracks are genuinely amazing.

I tried repeatedly to get into Prince since some people I really respect rave about him but he just doesn't move the needle for me. Not bad, just not much.

I appreciate Prince more now that I am older. This album has 4 big hits and the rest are meh. Still, the 4 were huge.

- let's go crazy is fun!! - darling nikki is giving alex turner - when doves cry oh yes!!!! - purple rain is effing awesome 3/5

BRUH i typed a whole fricken thing and it didn't fricken save im so mad. summary: i felt awful giving prince and his album such a poor rating because i know how proclaimed he and his work is. however, this is not what i expected this album to be--nor did i really enjoy it. i thought most songs (besides purple rain) lacked originality and sounded like carbon copies of each other. maybe this is one of those albums that need to grow on me or maybe im not understanding the goal of the album at all, but the appeal to prince jsut does not click for me. his voice--which sounds like a poor michael jackson impression-- is nice but gets boring, or for his skill on the guitar. (after reading an article titled "why do people like prince?" i know now that he is incredibly talented on an array of instruments and after looking @ credits of his album he is fully self-everything) I understand that he is almost the "god" of music, but it just does not hit for me. maybe i'll have to listen to other music to fully understand. sorry mr. prince, i like mr michael jackson better.

I’m sure I’ll be burned at the stake for this, but this album was just okay to me. There were bops, sure, but the whole 80’s vibe just doesn’t ring my bell.

Didn't really catch me or make me dislike it. I was a wee bit lost on what it was trying to do

6/10 liked it, prince is icon diva but not reallyyy my vibe with this album. the song purple rain and lets go crazy might be my favs buttt ill try listening to this again to see if my opinion has changed + give him another shot and possibly more of his albums

✅ Soo worth it definitely recommend it! 💗💗

Very good album not my personal music taste

Not really my vibe, but an important album for music history

Really nice beats and synths overall nice composition and structure I really enjoyed Computer Blue- The drums are on point and that screech transition I quite liked

Not my type, but not bad. At some point i really enjoyed some bits. 6/10

freitag 2.1.2026 in meinem zimmer spät nachts

not bad

Neither irksome nor awe-inspiring. A solid album, but potentially difficult to sing along toz

Prince is one of the most famous and legendary artist in the world, despite that I've never found his music amusing, like it lacks something. The album is very good, however I don't have any song that I really liked. I guess this is only my subjective opinion.

His voice is sick. Very groovy. Bit slow for me.

It was fine, what else do you want me to say? I was brought to tears? I wasn't

Fun to listen, found myself dancing. I have a prior relationship with a lot of these songs that I can’t kick, but overall liked it more than i expected.

First impression, I think the songs are gonna be rather long. Let's go crazy is kinda fun. Darling Nikki makes me uncomfortable. Purple Rain is definitely the stand out song here. Overall a fun rocky album, but nothing I would go back to.

I enjoyed the throwback sounds, it was very much rock n roll in a David Bowie way, but I do think David had a better approach with the mixing of genres, it was also very synth-driven, but at the end of the day, it felt like a David Bowie album except it was more contained. Fav Track: Take Me W U.

great album, but i just didn't connect with it...

When this record came out, everybody tried to sound like this for the next couple of years. Still you can hear this is definitely the master himself. It's not my taste but it's a landmark in 80s pop music. Favorite song: when doves cry

Definitely not for me :( but I did like the last song "purple rain"

Cool guitar throughout, but I wasn't a huge fan of some of the singing, especially in songs like Beautiful Ones. Darling Nikki was very odd. Prince is a very iconic artist and I must say that given what I've heard this was somewhat disappointing, it wasn't bad but it certainly wasn't great, Purple Rain was definitely the best song on the album, very unsurprisingly, but beyond that and perhaps when doves cry the rest weren't brilliant. 64/100 Score edited 28/12/25 Score edited 11/06/25

I think its meant to be really good. I've definitely seen it listed as one of the best albums of all time. In fact I believe I listened to this a year or so ago for that reason, and just like then, I found it quite boring. Nothing felt particularly intruiging, it was just fine. Certainly nothing wrong with it. Perhaps this is because I haven't lived long enough to really see music evolve in real time. Comparing this to the music I like to listen to now, it seems average, subpar. But when it was released maybe it was revolutionary to those who listened.

The songs are good. But not exactly my cup of tea. I'd nod my head to them if I heard someone playing them. But it's not an album I'd reach for when wanting something to listen to. The last song was the nicest, 'Purple Rain'.

Didn’t finish this album but was pretty good

No way that was only 9 songs. Found it very tiring. +1 for the singles.

A tough one to review. Prince is one of those artists who I admire for their songwriting and musicianship but never quite get. There are some great songs on this but also quite a lot of stuff that doesn’t hit. When doves cry is amazing… and I love the song Purple Rain because it makes me think of the video where there is a bloke in a baseball cap nodding along, as if giving it his approval. It amuses me for some reason.

Great album. But not sure I would listen to it again. I did enjoy Darling Nikki - Great song. Great story. Love the beat and definitely a song 3/5

I danced to a few of these songs so I already knew them.

Fav songs: - when doves cry - I Would Die 4 U *

I know of Prince and only one song. I have always pushed listening to him generally, so today is the day! I enjoy the loud percussion/drums throughout the album. You can definitely hear the 80s in the songs, note that I'm not saying it's a negative thing. Its just funny to me to hear the 80s 'music sound' or 'influence' like the synthesizer and how it affects the music during the time and how its different from other eras of music. I very much feel like the album cover reflects what the album's theme, expectation, or the vibe in its entirety. Computer Blue is kind of fun. Even though there isn't much lyric, we hear the guitar "singing" and in general gives me air guitar moments in my room. I Would Die for You was a bit repetitive for me, I think a bit more oompf in the verses then we good. Purple Rain, of course, is iconic in its own and the only song I knew from Prince. As much as I like the songs, I wouldn't find myself coming back to listen to the entirety of Purple Rain but I can appreciate his music if he came up on the music rotation.

5.8/10

its giving so much nostalgic vibes i kinda liked it

As someone who doesn't like Prince, this album was a lot more listenable than I expected.

Pretty fun album. Didn't realize that Foo Fighter's song was a cover.

Great guitar player and great voice. Pretty standard album as I wouldn’t say anything was standout. Very recognisable

Enjoyable album and a nice listen. Brilliant voice and incredible guitar throughout. Would say middle of the road overall though as nothing stood out crazy to me other than the big hitters on the album.

Overrated

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today......... "Animals strike curious poses...." Movie's ok, Soundtrack is great. "Let's go Crazy", "Purple Rain", "When Doves Cry", and my guilty pleasure song, "Darling Nikki". i enjoyed listening to this album. never upgraded from Cassette. the hit songs are gigantic hits that shot him up to superstardom, but secondary songs are ok. i might have to finally upgrade. for those who do not know, Prince is a really great, underrated guitar player. check out his super bowl halftime show in the pouring rain.

Cl9se to a 4. Would give a 3.5 if possible. Some songs brought back good memories and smiles.

An album that everyone should listen to at least once in their life. It embodies early 80’s music.

Will probably get hate for this but I’m just not a huge Prince fan. I respect him as a musical icon but the tunes aren’t for me. Favorite Song(s): Purple Rain - obviously.

I wasn’t really paying a ton of attention, but it was pretty good. Definitely gonna revisit it later and see if I like it more, but it was pretty solid as it stands. Favorites: Let’s Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, Purple Rain

it's good! did i get sincere goosebumps while listening? not exactly. but it often makes you wanna move.

For nostalgic I’ll give this a 3 stand outs are obvious. Purple Rain, Let’s Go Crazy and When Doves Cry

Not what I remember from when I was younger. Still some really great tunes

Fine. Never been a big Prince fan. Mainly because I don’t really understand what he’s all about. This hasn’t really changed that.

Grandiloquent

Never really got Prince. Didn't really change my mind

I didn't grow up on Prince, nor was I ever around any big Prince fans, and yet I'm aware that he's widely considered to be a legend. The aura around him makes rating this album difficult. Did I enjoy this, or am I afraid to go against the grain and say I didn't. Or was it actually good but I raised my expectations so high that it couldn't live up to it? Who knows. Prince being prince, it deserved two listens and on the second time round I did enjoy it more. The Beautiful Ones especially is a great track and probably my favourite. When Doves Cry is an obvious classic that even a Prince newb like me knew and loved. Overall, I'd give this a 3.5 if I could. I enjoyed it and hope to like it more on future listens, but I'd be lying if I said that it's immediately going into my playlists.

Good stuff just not my kinda stuff, 6/10.

Any album that had four singles from it must be a good album; on the other hand this list is supposed to include only good albums, right? This certainly was one of the most popular albums of its day, and had the extra benefit of a movie to go with it. I never was a huge Prince fan, and for me there was a bit too much screaming here.

Hooray, an artist I've heard of! I've never actually listened to this album though. 'Let's Go Crazy' sure sounds like Footloose. 'Computer Blue' sounds like Kokomo at the beginning. The concept of the "Filthy Fifteen" (of which 'Darling Nikki' is one) made me lol. I knew about it (thanks to Eminem's 'White America') but I never looked at the list before. Let's just say my own "here are 15 problematic songs!!!" list would be a BIT different, even in 1984. This was a very solid album (and very 80s), but it's not quite a 4 for me. Highlights: 'Take Me with U', 'When Doves Cry'

Smooth, classic

Very 80's. Some great guitar work here

You cannot deny his talent and range.

(Genre - Funk & RnB) 1. Let's Go Crazy - 7/10 2. Take Me With U - 9/10 3. The Beautiful Ones - 7/10 4. Computer Blue - 5/10 5. Darling Nikki - 4/10 6. When Doves Cry - 9/10 7. I Would Die 4 U - 7/10 8. Baby I'm A Star - 6/10 9. Purple Rain - 10/10 (Album Rating - 7/10) I am not necessarily a fan of Prince's music, nor do I listen to his music much, but I can say that I love the uniqueness to his music as well as his distinct artistry. I love his androgynous persona, and how expressive he is in his music. His lyricism is very meaningful and I can appreciate the different beats displayed in each song.

Meh. Lots of filler and noodling aside from a few great tracks

not bad

good and enjoyable. 7/10

Solid, Purple Rain is the best

Obviously this album has some great moments. I enjoyed it. I’d never listened to it in its entirety previously though. I like how scatty it is, and even amongst the monster singles it has a feeling of dishevelment rising through it. Great album.

No real complaints

Definitely Prince's best album, Purple Rain, is a testament to how incredible guitar solos can be. Fairly good hits, the other album tracks didn't hit the spot.

I like Price’s hits a good deal, and he’s a stellar guitar player. But this album has a fair amount of filler. I’m not sure why it’s so well regarded as a whole. The hits are great though. 3.8/5

The songs that hit on this album hit HARD, but it veers too much into theatrical territory for me to consider this essential.

I grooved to this at points! :) definitely better than the last Prince album we had :)

Purple Rain and also some other songs

Yeah man

I'm sure this is technically great but it just wasn't for me

I was excited to see this album come up, but it wasn't nearly as good as I remember it being. I probably would have liked it a little more without all the shrieks and "eww!"s.

Better than the movie but I still don’t really get the Prince appeal. Title track is great and the back half of the album generally is pretty solid, but the first five songs didn’t work for me

When Doves Cry kicks it so hard! The rest of this...not my taste. I've never understood the hard-core love for Prince - I get that he is an excellent performer, but sometimes when you're a visionary, your output doesn't land...

Decent

Is he sure it's not heliotrope rain?

Some I hated and some were fine, but I also was hungry when I listened so I was more critical

I mostly liked Purple Rain, the rest wasn't really my style.

Evocative, but kinda hair metal screaming takes away some of the seriousness. Songs are typically too drawn out.

Much better than sign of the times, and I can see why some people would love this album but to me it's just a bit icky

Meh. 2.75

Doves Cry is the best

idk fine?

Thought I would like this a lot more than I did. Easy to hear its influence on records that came later. I did almost turn it off during repeated screeches and yells from Prince on a couple of songs. We get it dude, you want that girl real bad. Still iconic, though.

Fine. Not what I was expecting Prince to sound like tbf.

Like Bowie, Prince has got some 80s musical weirdness that is really hit or miss. Im realizing I've never listened to Prince outside of "Doves Cry" and I think I'm learning I'm not a Prince fan. I respect Prince as a musician and can admire his skill, but I'm not a fan of the music overall. There are some songs I really love like "Baby I'm a Star"

I'm mostly familiar with Prince's hits; the maximalist pop of "Let's Go Crazy" and "When Doves Cry", as well as the majestic title track "Purple Rain". I have heard this album before, but it never really left an impression on me. This time around, "Beautiful Ones" as a sleeper hit (fantastic vocal performance, great arrangement, just wow), a newfound appreciation of "I Would Die 4 U", and an otherwise unchanged opinion. Purple Rain is a good album, but Prince's sonic excesses and horniness wear on me. I completely get why Purple Rain was revered, as nothing sounded remotely like this at the time. I will give it to Prince that he is intensely talented and creative, but Purple Rain feels very uneven to me.

It's a vibe

Highlights are very high and rest reminded me why I've rarely listened to the full album - noisy and forgettable.

Certainly good, and the highs are some of the best songs ever written. However, I can't get past some of the songs I'm not particularly fond of (most of the A-side, really), so I'm bumping this down from 3.5 to 3.

Najpierw zabawa, a potem nuda i ego top

Was really looking forward to this one, but unfortunately it didn’t blow me away. I guess I don’t really get Prince, I think the famous singles on these are some of the best songs ever, but the rest didn’t wow me, and I didn’t love the album as a whole. 3/5

Short..3 bangers. Other songs were OK.

Good Listen, staple for history however wasn't blown away.

Some decent stuff here. Some risks were taken. Some nuts apparently busted. A little too pop-py though.

I like some of this. Darling Nikki remains the least sexy song of all time though!

Wasn't really in the mood for it if I'm honest. I respect putting the namesake song for the album dead last. Always thought Prince was a little overrated...

Prince is an artist I know almost nothing about outside of Chapelles Show. 80s music and I tend to not mix but wow Let’s Go Crazy slaps. Highlight of the album for me. People say this is Prince’s Magnum Opus. Idk if this album did it THAT MUCH for me, but I am interested to hear what else his discography is about.

I mean Purple Rain on its own is 5/5 When doves cry is also a top song but tbh I ent a massive fan He is iconic, he can sure as hell play a great guitar and he is massively influential But I just don’t think the album in its entirety is that great.

It was alright. Half familiar with two songs and at the end of it, those are still the only two I remember.

Darling Nikki into When Doves Cry is a jarring juxtaposition. This is why albums had sides… I like Prince (who doesn’t), but I’ve never loved him. This probably deserves 4 or 5 stars, but it just doesn’t quite hit that spot for me.

Wiedermal zäme es album glosst. Heifahrt vu Frankrich. Isch easy gsi, aber d Krone heds mir ez nöd vom Näggel glitz. leider biz lisig gsi. Au kei meisterleistig das Album, bar nervigi Tracks usserd vlt de legende purple rain track selber isch nüd extraklass. 3 kröhnli für euse Prinz

Never understood the hipe over this album. Yes, there are 2 or 3 good songs; Purple Rain is certainly great, but the album is kinda boring? 5/10

Some classic songs here. Prince is undeniably a talented vocalist and talented artist in general. Unabashedly 80s which comes off slightly corny to me. It's fine but not something I see myself ever getting very into.

Solid songs with typical 80s sheen.

Some highs, but the lows really dragged this

Super synth pop.

I get that he's an amazing musician, i just don't appreciate his songs. You think you're very sexy, I get it.

prince has always felt weirdly alien to me in that he is universally loved and I just don't get it. enjoyed a few tracks, but not the popular ones?

Surprisingly pleasant

Prince is one funky man, and he knows it. Super talented, I'm jealous of his ability to play 18 million instruments. It's a bit too slick for my tastes. Could appreciate but not enjoy, happy to listen to it once and never again.

I always want to love this album, but for some reason just can't outside a few songs. Prince is a guitar wizard and love watching his live performances, but it doesn't come out in his songs here. I understand how legendary this album is, but I think it may be a little too pop-y for me.

One absolutely outstanding track, a few reasonably good numbers, some weird stuff that doesn't really gel, a track with an annoying keyboard riff that quickly wears out its welcome and (lastly) a bid for arena rock immortality that sees Prince dumbing down his considerable songwriting skills.

Objectively a good album, just not to my personal taste.

Fairly familiar with this album Favorite song: let's go crazy Closer to 3.5 then 3

It’s a classic for a reason - banger after banger after banger

Pretty good, not my favourite album ever but I can see why people would love it. The self-titled Purple Rain is probably my favourite of the tracks.

I can see why people love this but doesn’t speak to me

I like it, but it does not quite reach 4 stars for me.

Was actually my first time listening to this in full.

Can't decide which version of when doves cry I like best

I want to like this album more than I do. I think there’s a basic level on which Prince operates that doesn’t work for me somehow. The mix is terrible. Ah well

Didn't like the reverb for vocals but product of the time.

It was ok. Never did care much for Prince when this was very popular but it has aged fairly well and I even added When Doves Cry to my workout playlist as the bpm is a pretty rapid 125.

I enjoyed the instrumentation and music aspect more than the lyrics

Obviously a very talented guy. Too bad i'm not a fan of that "obviously 80's" sound. Really dug the synth funkiness of "Baby I'm a Star" though.

Not quite my style but god damn! Prince can really sing!!

Would benefit from further listens

It’s ok, not quite sure if it gets to good. The best of the three Prince albums I’ve had so far on the list, not least in part that it doesn’t go on forever. The singles are part of the cultural wallpaper, but aside from that nothing is amazing. He could sure as shit play guitar, though.

MJ is the only king of pop

Pretty good all things considered title track is by far the best tho

When it's good, it's very very good. When it's bad, we'll throw in a guitar solo. The 80s production lets it down badly in places. It is singular, it is Prince in all his glory, and it's flawed. Hallelujah.

great! special style

Great album with some filler

I can't stand most of the songs.. When doves cry is cool ;) Purple rain is a great track This could have been an EP or a single !

Feels a bit like blasphemy to think this about anything Prince was involved in, but I was underwhelmed by this album. You can hear in his voice how Prince would give a great live performance, but outside of his energy, I didn't feel like there was anything special that I would actively want to listen to again. Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, and I Would Die 4 U are all pretty good 80s hits, but they can't compare to Thriller or even Kate Bush.

This album is a bop! Great party anthems at the start. “Let’s go crazy”, “when doves cry”, “darling Nicki”. Purple rain is Prince’s stairway to heaven.

Not bad but very 80s. Feel like the synthesiser was very overused and sounded a bit grating.

The problem with reading reviews from others in the group is that they often make a compelling argument. I was ready to give this a 4 - I love When Doves Cry, and Purple Rain, and the rest was diverting enough - but Jamie is absolutely right. The average track length is just under 5 minutes (Purple Rain is rather responsible for this). The worst song on the album is 2m49s, and has a constant cymbal march which raised my blood pressure. Every single song, bar none, should have ended a minute before they actually do. If he wants to fanny about, he should save it for the tour. A lot of it is overthought - having said that, a score of 2 feels harsh, given When Doves Cry and Purple Rain are undoubtedly listenable.

Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: Darling Nikki, Purple Rain, Computer Blue This album was... fine? Is that a controversial opinion? I was kind of expecting something much more groundbreaking, powerful, culturally prominent. This is Prince's _Purple Rain_ after all! Maybe it was groundbreaking in 1984, but today, listening to it now, it hasn't moved me much. The only track I found to be particularly eyebrow raising (and part of the reason I liked it) was Darling Nikki. I can see that track being exceptionally questionable and "transgressive" in 1984.

I have a lot of respect for Prince as an artist, and I can see how talented he is. That being said, I just don’t find myself enjoying his music all that much. It’s not bad, but it doesn’t really grab me. There are some groovy parts here and there that catch my ear, but they don’t last long enough to hold my attention.

Not really my thing, but the man was talented.

This was another album where I expected something more. The bangers are there, and they are great, but some very mediocre songs ride in between those. While not a bad album, I am not aboard the hype train with everyone else.

I’m not too keen on Prince yet never really gave Prince a chance, just not for me - a little overrated but maybe great at the time. Purple rain is of course nice but just one song on the album, down the middle 5/10 for me.

Similar to Sign 'o' the times, took a few listens to get to know the songs. Slightly more enjoyable due to the reasonable length. 3.5

I understand this is a pretty revolutionary album, but it just didn't quite do it for me.

When the Doves Cry is peak in this album. Everything else was okay for me. However, I understand why this album deserves its flowers.

Too 80s

Was really excited to listen to this one but turns out its still Prince and I still don't LOVE him. I really appreciate him and his talent, and I enjoy a handful of his songs, but at the end of the day its just not my favorite.

Great, love the extended guitar solos! Purple rain is obviously a classic. It's definitely better than a lot of the 3 star albums but didn't blow me away. It still was super enjoyable though

Good album

Great musician .i loved purple rain and when doves cry. But not the kind of music i listen regularly

Not a big fan of the genre (80s funk pop), but I can get what people loved about it. Beyond genre, solid songs that made me move! And able to slow things down. A cohesive album. Might have been 4 stars in a different genre (or later on in this list)

Second half significantly better than first half

This album sounds how it looks. Over the top, super-produced and slick as a lubricated glove. If that's your thing, dive right and emerge sweaty and satisfied out of the other end, have a shower and then go. I'll call you. Three stars.

Lots of conflicting thoughts about this album. The title track is absolutely incredible and a fantastic song, but so much if the rest of the album feels either derivative, dated, or unappealing. There are definite high points, but so much of this album is skippable in my opinion. But the best parts are absolutely worth your time. Top tracks: Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, Purple Rain

Prince is another of those artists I’ve always felt I should like more than I do—I have come to enjoy some of the singles and can appreciate how (like Bowie) he ploughed his own furrow, but it doesn’t do anything more for me.

This one's gonna get me crucified, but I'm not a Prince fan. It's a collection of immaculately produced and performed songs that just do nothing for me. And every time he goes into his high pitched screeches, it just takes me out of it. The one song that I enjoy, When Doves Cry still has the issue of being two minutes too long. Let's Go Crazy is a solid track too, but that's my extent of enjoyment from this record. It's just too pristine and doesn't have enough grit for me, and even when he tries to add the grit I'm looking for (such as with the aforementioned screams/screeches), it falls flat for me. I admit this album is good (and probably great), it's just not for me.

Good album overall. Good mix of genres and immense talent on show. Outside of the track Purple Rain, my favourites were The Beautiful Ones and Darling Nikki. I don't know how often I'll go back to this album however I respect it's place as a must listen to album.

The best of Prince's efforts as a musician. These songs are quinnisential 80s and I mean cmon now, Purple Rain is a 10/10, album as a whole is a 6

GOLD!!!! Well… Purple

Freakky ahh man. Honestly, It didn’t really do much for me…I feel a little sad about that. Favorite song is When Doves Cry

I must be in the wrong mood or I just am letting my impression of Prince distract from the album.

Good: there's like four or five Prince hits on this album. Bad: unfortunately that's it

It was fun, but I don't know if I would listen to any of these songs in my own time

Music is incomprehensible and confusing to me, but sometimes you can listen to it. The last track stands out for the better from the rest of the recordings. 6 out of 10.

Apart from Purple Rain and When Doves Cry, I didn't find anything that interesting. It was a good listen mostly because of these 2 songs.

Weirdly I'm not quite sold on this being the best thing ever even though I am sold on Prince being the best ever, but it's still Purple Rain at the end of the day

yeah aight. poipul

A few good tracks, but never been a fan of the title track

Pop rock. A few real classics here but also some that didn’t hit the mark for me. Wanted to like it more than I did.

Purple Rain is a mega song, and When Doves Cry is also good. The rest I could very much take or leave. Probably won’t listen again.

I know this is a legendary album but honestly, I don’t see myself returning to it anytime soon. The title track is a banger though (of course).

I love Prince but this album feels more inconsistent to me. I still like Dirty Mind and 1999 much more than this one. But he two big songs on this are some of his best. Highlights: When Doves Cry Purple Rain

Great one here but the main songs were too long and it was cool but could have been much better

Sorry prince, has chli streng gfunde

GO STUPID GO CRAZYY hmm ischmer chli too much 80er aber isch cool I guess? WAS ISCH DIE SNARE BI TAKE ME WITH U HAHAH ja isch jz nüt für mich gsi ich liebbb wenner schreit ham chli müeh mite drum machine when doves cry isch na cool! dugudugusugusugusugusu hahahs ich weiss nöd es isch na vool aber d perkussion macht mich sooo nöd ah poah nei echt ich chan mich ziitewiis fast nur ufd drums konzentriere hahahaha purple rain isch es unglauuublichs lied ich los nomal zo crazy für dich luca jo bö es isch vlt hert aber es isch eifach iwie

bazdmeg a fele eltunt bocsi when doves cry: elso, aminek jobb a szovege, instrumental sem rossz amugy (6.5/10) i will die 4 u: kicsit uncsi.

it wasnt that bad, but still mid...

There a few of his tracks I like, and I don't think his music is 'bad' but .... it just bores me. I just can't ever get into it. This album is a great example of that. I think Let's Go Crazy and When Doves Cry are very good but the rest of the tracks are just monotonous filler with no positives. If I never heard this album again I wouldn't be at all bothered. If it came on again there's a 50/50 chance I would listen to it without skipping or turning it off. I reckon it's a 2 or 3 star, at best. On the basis of the aforementioned 2 good tracks I will go with 3 stars.

Didn’t ‘get’ Prince first time around but there’s some depth there

Qualitätspop, legendär.

First time!

Solid album, I always forget how many good songs are on here before you even get to Purple Rain

Alright.

Prince is an icon and this album no doubt solidifies that. I don't love every song on it but it's still a very good listen. Parts of the backing tracks feel a little corny but there's def some hits on here and the closer is an undeniable classic. I had no idea "Darling Nikki" was the reason behind the Parental Advisory stickers on albums so that was cool (I don't really like the song though). 3.45 for this one.

Olinpa pettynyt, että en tästä pahemmin pitänyt. Pari vekkulia biisiä, mutta muuten en taitaisi kuunnella uudelleen.

Pretty good
