Te lang, een beetje lomp, maar vette beats, verhalen, en toch zeker ook wel divers.
good album i like it
Good samples. Good rapping. Good album. I like how he dedicated an entire track to just have a British lady endorse him without any background music.
Liked this more than I expected to. Very West Coast, very 90s hip hop and I thought that the production has surprisingly held up really well! Dragged a tad in the middle / towards the latter part of the album, but solid solid album. 7.5 / 10
Al klinkt het allemaal een beetje zoals "Momma said knock you out". Stoere kinderachtige mannentaal.
3.64
Classic album from Ice T. I love the versatility Ice T shows in this album. He does some pure gangsta rap, some true hip hop spitting, and even introduces the rock group Body Count he started. While there is a lot of talk of violence and misogyny, there is also a good amount of counter balance with talks of struggles of the black experience, current affairs at the time, and even abuse children suffer.
Good beats, smooth styling.
8/10. Either I'm starting to get more into rap, or I'm simply getting better rap albums in this project. This is a really sick, and dope album!!! :) Perhaps I'm simply biased, since Ice-T has a photo of him with Lemmy Kilmister as one of his photos on Spotify.
I like this era of hip hop. This is a good album!
Classic ice t, I prefer his body count facet
Ended up really liking this one.
A bit cheesy, very repetitive, but also quite a lot of fun, like the musical version of the movie Bad Boys. I giggled when Ice-T said "I fucked her" at the end of the "Evil e - What About Sex?" bit. Then the a capella section about Nelson Mandela at the end of "Prepared to Die" - kinda corny but also kinda powerful. Fave Tracks: Bitches 2, Escape from the Killing Fields 3.5/5
Smart, fun, funny, musically enjoyable, but also an angry gut punch. Obviously several recurring themes of O.G. haven't aged well, and you can't entirely ignore that. But the content remains overwhelmingly, distressingly relevant, like Street Killer. On its own terms, this album is dope.
4.0
I like Ice-T, but I know him entirely from Law and Order SVU which, with that in mind, makes this whole album hilarious. Like he’s singing about killing people but to me he’s just the nice man from TV, I don’t doubt he’s a legitimate badass OG, but like I can’t not like him.
I am still stunned to discover the heavy metal group Ice T is associated with. Excuse my ignorance. Wow. Also, this album was pretty solid, especially moving through many shorter vignettes.
Body Count is one badass song. I like the genre crossing of this album and the artist following his own vision. The poetry is well done and mixes both in your face lyrics with thoughtfully expressed socioeconomic realities.
🎧This is really good shit. On some of these songs Ice-T sounds like Rakim (who gets a shoutout along with a few dozen others on M.V.P.s). Rock song Body Count is a little out of place here.
Great flow, good songs, bad skits, sexism. Yup, it's a 90s hip-hop record...
I like this a lot more than modern rap.
Super fun
The last track is WILD
This album is really funny! It’s odd that now he’s better known for playing a cop, but he had a lot of fun making this
Favourite tracks: midnight; home of the body bag; bitches 2; body count
Sick !!!
I’m not much of a rap connoisseur, but I liked the music tracks and found the raps interesting.
His flows are so smooth. There’s some 5 star moments, but I can’t say it’s all there.
I love him when he raps. I love him when he tweets.
Nice oldschool rapshit
4/5. Early 90s rap at it's best.
I call this style of music “Dr. Suess Rap” Do you like green eggs and ham? I could not give a mother-f**king damn Would you eat them with a fox? I’ll put you in a freaking box.
Absolutely brilliant
Great album! it hits that sweet spot of transitioning from 80's to 90's rap, best way I can summarize it. Ice T keeps it real this whole album and like his contemporaries at the time doesnt mince words about authority. my only issue is the length, and some of the experimentation he tries falls flat (Body Count) but I respect the man for just going for it. I'd give a 4.5 if I could
A landmark album in gangster rap. Smart and brutal. Still problematic at times and Ice T’s flow has always been kind of goofy to me.
Classic hip hop that I’ve grown to respect during these voyages.
My first Ice T album, and it's great. I know him more for Law and Order and his tweets, even his role in Rick and Morty, but now I see why he's in the position he is: he's got it. The raps are hard, the rock edge is cool too. He's in a lineage of activist West Coast rappers, a lot like NWA. A few too many skits on here, but that's a product of the generation. This is a really strong album, glad we got it. Favorite tracks: Ziplock, Mic Contract, New Jack Hustler, Bitches 2, OG Original Gangster, Midnight, MVPs, Escape from the Killing Fields (probably #1 on here), Street Killer. Album art: Hard. Framing is dope, pictures are dope, font is dope. This is an era classic. 4/5
killa
Surely a classic but I agree with critics that the album has too many filler tracks like so many other albums too. They also have the overdone style of the time by ending a verse with the words of the title track.
Like many of the hip hop albums of the 80’s and 90’s it’s overstuffed with style and vibes on a hilariously bloated track list. 3.5/5
I did not think I would like this at all. Most of the gangster rap I've listened to, I thought it was boring, repetitive and annoyingly macho; this is almost a parody of that though, which lots of really good tongue in cheek wordplay and irreverent choices. Ironically, as what seems to be one of the main points of influence for 90s gangster rap, the influence of Beastie Boys is undeniable, and the production gains a lot from that. I had a lot of fun listening to this.
”Yo, kick some more of that by Ice, T”
This is my first Ice-t listen, pretty good. I think I'm now on his dick
Like pretty much all gangsta rap much of it hasn't aged well but he's got some rhymes. I also love the irony that the original gansta Ice-T plays a police on a show literally called "Law and Order"
I have had a hard time with gangster rap, I like rap but I’m not very gangster so I find it hard to relate. I did however appreciate Ice T’s humility, at one point it seems he actually admits he’s not the hardest but he’s still portraying himself to be quite hard and I kinda believe it. I ended up enjoying this quite a bit actually, Ice T knows his strengths and leans on it and it works really well, his writing is top tier, and the beats balance it well. I’m typically not too into the interludes as I find they take away from the album but I’m this one they provide context and depth so I’m for it in this case. I listened to this during a run and it kept me entertained throughout, really skilled rap album and I appreciate it. One gripe I have is that John Carpenter didn’t get a sample credit on The Tower, who knew the Halloween track would blend so well with hip hop. 4 stars
Before his long-standing role as a detective on Law and Order SVU, Ice T was a gangster. Not just any gangster, but the Original Gangster! Haha do you get it, I referenced the title. In all seriousness, he was one of the original innovators on the genre of gangster rap by utilizing hardcore hip-hop to put a life of violence and crime in the forefront of the music. Quality is pretty consistent throughout the record, but it rarely feels as though there's a true standout track. Ice T is not the most memorable or impressive rapper from this time, but his stone-cold personality is easily his most enduring feature. This is best-utilized on the song Midnight where the darker production lends exceptionally well to Ice T's delivery, leading to a frankly unnerving track that borders on horrorcore. Also hard not to like the song M.V.P.S. where he takes time to shoutout major name in hip hop, really cool. Incredibly funny is the crossover thrash song Body Count, which has Ice T dabbling in hardcore punk with a the band which is also called Body Count. The result is okay. For all that this album has to offer, it definitely runs too long for it's own good. Regardless, I think Ice T has a lot of great things to say, especially by closing the album condemning Operation Desert Storm and the prison industrial complex in America. I got a lot of respect for Ice T, and this album cements that.
Interesting tone coming from a member of NYPD's special victims unit. Solid beats.
I liked it. Fun listen even if silly bravado at times. I like these beats from the late 80s / early 90s
Im down with the Iceberg.
This made for a pretty fun and interesting listen. It’s deliberately self-aware but also hits on some heavy themes. There’s dialogue interspersed throughout the album, often for comedic effect.
This album was not made for a white guy in his 40s, however I really liked it. I remember when Ice T was front and center with conservative dried up politicians. Early hip hop is so different than today. Ice T's lyrics cut and the samples are awesome. Really enjoyed this one.
It's dated but . . . the beats are fire.
Great album! Didn’t listen to Ice T back in the day, he just wasn’t in my rotation. I really liked it, but it seems long… I remember Body Count as a crossover hit with the heavy metal sound.
ich glaub er hett sich ned ungern gwaltverherrlichung und selbstverherrlichung gönd hand in hand aber d'beats sind insaaaane. und mich hetts eppe 5 mal verhaue und er isch in rick and morty... stabile 4

I only knew of Ice T from Law and Order SVU. I did not expect to like the music but I did like it despite its language. Mind Over Matter was my favorite track.
Rap from era I like rap best, am a sucker for Public Enemy around that time and this does resemble it musically a lot,
A solid album which falls into a number of hip hop traps, some of which were possibly Ice T innovations - shout out tracks, tracks promoting side projects (in this case Ice T's band Body Count), tiresome skits and a run time that's far too long. Onto the positives - Ice T has credibility on both the East Coast (born and raised in New Jersey) and the West (moved to LA after losing first his mother, then his father at a young age) and fuses both styles together. It keeps the album interesting. Ice is clearly a disciple of hip hop, respecting the history and recognising the new and this informs the music. The beats are quality, if a little similar at times. What's especially striking is his social observations - this is a man with something to say and is unafraid to say it. A manifesto for young black men and women to express themselves unashamedly. There are more messages of positivity and self worth within than many were finding in schools, work and society. Overall, an impressive, belligerent and important album.
Look, I bought Body Count's debut back then and still own it, with Cop Killer on it, but I grew up in a rural German town, riding my bike, listening to Thrash and Prog Rock. The most Gangsta I'd been by '91 was to hide from my parents that I had, legally, started smoking. I have never listened to much of this music, certainly not for 72 minutes straight. I don't know what to do here. It's... aight? Cool sampling? Probably important, too. I will say I kinda like this Ice-T fellow. Better than the other two Ices. Uhm. 4 stars, so when there's more of this coming up, I've already shown my due appreciation*. Ha! (* in earnest. I don't relate to it, but I did need to hear this album - as a societal and musical slice of time - while being entertained well enough and that's a +1)
I really don't like rap. I expected to listen to half of 5-6 tracks, write this off as a 1-2 star album, and move on. To my surprise, I listened to all of the 72 minutes of this album without ever feeling the urge to skip anything. Even the 'skits' aren't nearly as dumb as on other rap albums. OK, this dude wants us to know that he's reeeeally hardcore and that he likes swear words. But otherwise, this is actually pretty good, no-nonsense stuff. It figures that Ice T also likes metal music and it shows in the hard-hitting beats. Probably not really 4 stars for me. But it's so rare that I can even stand rap music and this one's a rare exception.
Always got time for Ice-T. Great breaks, spot on lyrics.
Classic of rap, grandfather of samples. Partway through some rap~metal comes on? Incredible
Early gangster rap was just different. Ice T is incredibly articulate and well versed throughout the album. Every song is enjoyable and tells a message. The short breaks help bring more meaning and personality to the album. Body Count is a unique mix of rap and metal. Overall an a super solid album that I definitely plan to come back to. I think there are better albums from this era and of this style, but not many and I can see how this helped influence rap going forward.
Thought I’d hate it. Didn’t
When not busy being confused by repeating exposition of Law & Order and being the subject of a terrible Rick and Morty episode, it's hard to forget Ice T was an O.G. This is one of THE classic early hip-hop albums. Yeah, there are some of the usual pointless skits but the tracks themselves a fucking ace. Flow, production, beats are all top drawer. Don't sleep on this album. Best Tracks: Mic Contract; Mind Over Matter; New Jack Hustler (Nino's Theme)
i had a lot of prejudice going on with this album, almost did not wanna hear it only for that horrible cover. however, this is actually good, i thought it was ambitious enough and honestly it made a statement. maybe too long but i don't know if shorter it would still sound good. i liked the beats and the arrogant raps, quite old school too but really good old school, might need a second listen before rating it though (just because of that denzel curry video about old school raps that i can't get out of my mind)
💖 body count 🗣️ 8️⃣
Mal was von nem Schwarzen. Rap
Typical 90s hip hop. It's got excellent storytelling. If I'm not mistaken, Ice T samples Black Sabbath's - Black Sabbath in the song Midnight. Favourite songs: Lifestyles of the Rich and Infamous, Fly By, O.G. Original Gangster, Mic Contract, Midnight, Bitches 2, Straight Up Nigga, Ziplock Least favourite songs: First Impression, Evil E - What About Sex?, Ya Shoulda Killed Me Last Year (fuck skits), M.V.P.s, Street Killer 4/5
I liked this one, pretty funny too.
Good old school rap. Nice strong message about LA in the late 80s/90s
I really enjoyed this. It's funky as hell and I do like Ice T's voice. This whole thing is a bit 'retro' even for 1991 - maybe 'classic' is a better word, esp as compared to the contemporary stuff from Dre/etc which I would maybe call 'progressive' instead. We had a Dre record recently and I found it to be super well-produced and full of fancy sampling and it sounded great. This is more simple - cool break beat, simple sampling, and cool sounding rapping. It's possible the lyrical content isn't great - I feel like I didn't notice it. To me this is 'old school' without being silly like BB License To Ill or Run DMC.
Classic early 90s west coast gangster rap, braggadocio is the order of the day as Ice raps about people being bitches (both genders), gangster hustle shit, and guns going bang. Plenty of mid song skit style breakdowns but Ice changes things up with the hard metal "Body Count" that would be spun off into a legit side project by the same name. They are, of course, infamous for the "Cop Killer" song, but then Ice-T would spend the last 23 years playing a cop on TV, really makes you think... Oh, and fuck Tipper Gore and the PMRC
A little long but a classic of the genre so I gave it an extra star. A couple less songs and skits and you’d have a five star album.
Too many songs but very listenable!!
Interesting album. As far as rap albums go, especially pioneering ones from the early 90's, I didn't think it was all that special other than noting that Ice T is a very good, smart lyricist. However, that was the first 16 songs, ending with MVP. When I heard that one I thought it was odd because it sounded like an album closer given that it's a shout out to other artists. But I think that was the point, and the point of the rest of the 8 songs was almost to be like an EP of new or experimental material. Lifestyles of the Rich and Infamous has lyrics that suggest that and Body Count is all about his heavy metal band and rock rap. And that was essentially the feel of this last 8-song segment - more rock rap than just rap. And it was really, really good. Those two plus Escape from the Killing Fields and Pulse of the Rhyme might have been my favorite on the whole record. Once I listened to the last part, I found myself enjoying the first part more on second listen, looking for and finding other songs where he varies the music and instrumentation. So I appreciated songs like Mic Contract, The House, Fly By, and Midnight even more. Maybe this album overall is no better than a 3.5 but I'm going to round up for doing some different things with the music and his clever lyrics.
This led me down a way deeper Ice T rabbit hole once I read that he also has a Metal band which is actually heavy as fuck. The man is a bit of an enigma
Hip Hop that samples Black Sabbath and horror movies? Sick. This album's lyrics are so over the top at times it's distracting. Still, super fun and thought provoking. Favorite tracks: Midnight, Lifestyles of the Rich and Infamous
It’s got a good beat
First impressions is a damn good skit Bitches 2 👍👍👍 Black sabbath on black sabbath by black sabbath sample
Po bem legal rapzao com base muito diferenciada
Pretty solid banging gangster rap. Interesting mix of rock in some of the songs too
An absolute classic with some great songs like Escape From The Killing Fields, The Tower, Mind Over Matter and the title track. The albums balances the Gangsta with socially critical and pure hiphop tracks and that what keeps this album interesting enough over the (long) running time. If Ice-T would've culled a few of the lesser songs and had taken it easy on the skits, it would've been a perfect one.
Fun listen.
Pretty good.
This certainly provided some welcome respite from the truly frightening depths of audio piss that have been endured thus far. It certainly doesn't earn my first 5*, but it's up there of what we've had so far. A surprisingly long album at 24 tunes.
Box office album from a box office man
Its weirdly empowering and still so topical today, its fun that he subverts the usual misogyny of rap and turns it around (see Bitches 2 as example) some of the skits are unintentionally hilarious, some are intended to be funny and some are just cringe, so for that it loses 1 star. 4 in total
The 90s was the golden age for hip hop for multiple reasons. One being that we saw the rise of west coast rap stars. Ice-T was one of them. However, being from the Bronx in NYC, I grew up as a staunchly NY hip hop fan. I couldn’t even receive Ice-T back then. Listening now, 30+ years later, I see he’s really a talented rapper. He’s also a well-rounded artist, introducing us to his metal band on Body Count. In all, this is a pretty stellar album from a pretty stellar artist. Of course, I knew of Ice-T back then; mostly for “Colors,” which isn’t on this album. He and other west coast rappers, like NWA, made a name for themselves making songs that came to be referred to as “gangsta rap,” providing a glimpse into Los Angeles gang life and spelling out all the ways they would fight back against police brutality. However, I wasn’t much into the west coast sound, so I didn’t pay much attention. But Ice-T has a good flow, and these tracks aren’t distinctly west coast. They’re just classic hardcore hip hop. Maybe because he’s actually originally from Newark, NJ. In fact, he spends half of MVPs shouting out east coast rappers of the time, and the other half shouting out west coast rappers. The song I’m most familiar with on this album, aside from the title track and Bitches 2, the most west coast-sounding track on the album, is New Jack Hustler (Nino’s Theme). It was featured on the soundtrack of the eponymous New Jack City, a 90s movie classic. Ironic that this is the song Ice-T the rapper contributes to the soundtrack since Ice-T the actor plays a cop in the movie. Even more interesting that he’s played multiple cop roles as an actor when he rose to fame belittling police and threatening to meet their brutality blow for blow. I wonder if that’s how he saw his career playing out.
ICE-T 1991 FOOL! Ice really lays out his personal manifesto, with deep love and also hatred for his native South Central. His chops are real, his sampling is on point. The general vibe is a little dated but still decent. The end shout out track is the punkest thing recorded in the 90s.
Surprisingly good. I’m not into the language, but this really isn’t music for me.
Woulda been 5 stars but a little too long lol
de los mejores discos que escuche este año
8/10 classic gangsta rap
Guilty pleasure
Ice-T crafted an incredibly fun and enjoyable album while still making it original, intelligent, and relevant. There’s enough range on this album to justify a longer runtime and I didn’t get bored at all through the album. It stays intriguing the entire run. Sometimes his flow can be a little clunky and the rhythm doesn’t really match up. That’s the only critique I have though. 4/5
I love Ice T and this album would have got 5 stars if some much of its 72 minutes run time wasnt interludes
3.6 Solid rap album, political, some metal crossovers what more could u want fave songs: home of the bodybag
This kinda rules. Body Count is a BOP.
- you can tell he’s an OG - balances deep themes with fun lyrics - Really enjoyed it
ja mislim da je ovaj album baš cool. baš og. podsjeća kao neki film, neka igra, nešta ove tematike - sa skitovima kao uvod u sljedeću pjesmu
Cracking
It's good. It has some brilliant sample choices (Sabbath, The Theme from Halloween) and variety (hi Bodycount) and some of the songs are great - but it is a little over long and there is some cruft in there.
I listened to this hard as nails album, stopped, and listened to it again. Rolex watch, can’t fit no more diamonds on it. Pinky ring, worth a house if I decide to pawn it. Damn, Detective Tutuola.
Always liked this kind of hip-hop - it's about the music! Old school organic/sampled beats and a very rhythmic vocal style that doesn't overtake the music. I also love Ice-T's voice - perfect combination of aggression and smoothness. Negatives? Too long. Also skits in general are lame - automatic skips. Still when this album is rolling it is fantastic - grading on the best, it's a keeper. 7/10 4 stars
Big fan - nice beats - would listen again
O.G. is a listenable rap record with all of the hallmarks from this era of hip-hop. The beats are not as hard as the Public Enemy records and the flow isn't as smooth as other contemporary MCs but the album has some solid features and great samples.
I missed out on the West Coast hip hop scene. I grew up in the mid-west, and while Ice T was a known entity to me, my hip-hop flavor was Outkast, Biggy, and Jay Z. Of course, now Ice T is synonymous with various detective-oriented television shows, which upon hearing this album is hysterical. Ice T shows his talent with this album though. The grooves are excellent. This is a bopping rap album. "Mic Contract" is a standout example. Unapologetic to the extreme in terms of how he views America, his place in it, and the rules of the hustler. If this album came out today, I think it would be a 3 star record, but because of its influence and pioneering of the genre marrying the grooves, rhythms, and heavy metal infusion, I bumped it up to 4 stars.
Excelente álbum de rap, mostra a mente criativa de Ice T ao longo de linhas bem construídas e skits entre as músicas, achei um pouco longo só.
I understand that outlaw music is a presence across cultures but honestly have had about enough gangster rap with this list. With the intervening years as an actor and "reality" entertainment star, it's easy to forget what a big presence Ice T was in that scene though. It's very good for what it is, and though I'm no expert I think the incorporation of heavy metal and rock was pretty pioneering.
One of my old favorite albums. I don't listen to this kind of stuff now but in the day I was loving it. I like several songs on this album.
Great album, a little long
Really enjoyed this, crazy how well this album hasn’t aged though. Ice T’s conscious rap vibe is sick though, really enjoyed it as a throwback. Really puts into perspective how much hip hop has changed over the last 20 years.
Love the genre/era of music so knew I'd enjoy this. Wouldn't say its the best album of the genre but I think the best album to show someone if they hadn't listened to Ice T before. I think his story telling and word play is really good, this particular bit of New Jack Hustler stood out to me as an example. Got me twisted, jammed into a paradox Every dollar I get, another brother drops Maybe that's the plan and I don't understand God damn, you got me sinkin in quicksand But since I don't know, and I ain't never learned I gotta get paid, I got money to earn The Tower had that Halloween sample on the beat which was really cool and there was probably others that I didn't realise. Also Body Count stuck out as it was completely different than the rest in being more of a rock song. Would give more than 4 but less than 5.
Great beats with some hard hitting views. Felt like another NWA album which most definitely isnt a bad thing This has been one of the harder ones to rate, but I vibed well with it and did enjoy listening to every track.
Damnnn Ice T goes hard
Feels kind of corny hearing Ice T talk about being so gangster these days but there’s no denying the guy knows how to tell a story
I’m torn between a 3 and a 4 here because this drags way too long but it’s got a lot to say and says it well. Mind Over Matter is some of the best rapping I’ve heard in any early 90s hip hop. Once it got to the hard rock it lost me. I’ll round up to 4 for his work on SVU.
Must say, was dreading this with my preconceptions but actually really enjoyed it. Better than a lot of rap out there today
Crazy good album! Ice-T has a great lyrical flow and touches on some deep subjects. The lyrics are very badass and give some dark insights of life on the streets back in the day. The beats are pretty dope although the album drags on a bit to much at times. Key tracks: Mind Over Matter, New Jack Hustler, Bitches 2, O.G. Original Gangster, Midnight, Fried Chicken, Body Count, The Tower. 8 out of 10
Jaysis the MOUTH on him. Did NOT expect what it did 2/3rds of the way through. You can see why this is a classic, really well done. As so often with the rap albums on this list though - goes on a bit. But does take you on a journey.
Lækkert album, skarpt og sjovt, rigtig 90’er
As much as I dislike the braggadocio inherent in gangsta rap, this record is a blast. As "First Impression" plainly states, I find Ice T to be the dopest, flyest, O.G. pimp hustler, gangsta player, hardcore motherfucker living today...
Bitches 3 coming soon
Time flies when you’re having fun. And Ice T is just extremely good fun. He manages what most rappers don’t; to deliver serious messages while maintaining his humor. Hell, I even enjoyed the skits. Ice T truly is the O.G.
Hard to know how to rate this... I don't personally like it, particularly the lyrics, but the production was better than the other gangsta rap albums.
3.5
I wasn't that into it but I really liked the public service announcement at the end. That bumped it up a star for me.
Super solid 90s gangsta rap album, a little long for my tastes, and sadly riddled with filler that drags it down. But the bangers bang harder than Ice T banged yo mama last night.
Booolshit! I am once again grateful this exercise is getting me to listen to some foundational hip hop albums. A bit long but I liked it and learned more about Ice T.
I like Ice T. He's one of the reasons why Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is worth watching and his music is no-bullshit, old school Gangsta rap. I laughed out loud and nodded my head several times with his amazing lyrics and his delivery is on point. An enjoyable, intense listen, not for the faint of heart and conservative white Americans! (If you don't want to hear the word Nigger, move on.)
The skits may not have been wholly necessary, but this is still an excellent album. A worthy addition to the gangsta rap canon.
Pretty dope
Like when someone snorts too much cocaine, or bets too much on the ponies
This is very listening for non-rap lover, in comparison to most of the stuff that I've heard anyway. Good interesting rhymes. Nice use of profanity!
Pretty much west coast rap as I expect. Really enjoyed the Body Count's rap hew. But still for me, east > west I think... 4.5
• I listened to this album while doing other things but, unlike other albums I’ve listened to while doing this, this album never fell into the background. • Ice T’s voice is great • The spoken interludes between songs were a very nice change of pace • The topics covered in the songs are meaningful and still relevant today. Favourite song: Body Count
Pretty corny these days, but perty good
Old school gangsta rap isn’t really my thing so I was expecting this to be a 2 or 3 star listen, but Ice-T’s rock inclinations and a couple of cool samples elevated this to a four! Fave track - “Midnight”, “Body Count” and “The Tower”. Awww yeah.
Why is Ice-T dressed like Mike Reno in the New Jack Hustler video? Good classic album.
Really damn good.
Excellent!
Man who knew noted law & order SVU actor Ice-T could also rap?
Pretty good. Lyrics are great
The trio of Mic Contract, Mind Over Matter, and New Jack Hustler is pretty great. Some of the rhymes are very of their time and sound a little ridiculous now, but this is a great album overall.
Doesn't this have to be on the list simply for the irony of Ice-T portraying a cop that has become longest running male TV character in history. One of the first, if not the first (Schoolly D) mainstream gangsta rap releases. Gets points for presenting and both glorifying and critiquing a lifestyle nor previously represented in music. The music is unrefined and the pivot to Body Count is only hinted at, but the overall effect is authentic and powerful.
I remember hearing Body Count for the first time in my teens, blew my mind! Digging the Black Sabbath and Halloween samples, brings in elements of psychological horror. OG is a great album, but it's way longer than it should be. Maybe if it focused more on the hard hitting themes and less on appeasing the pimps, it could be a classic.
Crazy that this guy is an actor now
An accessible and engaging hip hop album, this stands the test of time and does not sound at all dated, 30+ years after it's release. Apparently considered an early "gangsta rap" record, the themes of street life are viscerally conveyed with pathos and regret rather than glorification. It seems Ice T was decades ahead of his time. Not my genre, but one of my favourites of the genre. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: New Jack Hustler (Nino's Theme) Date listened: 01/06/22
i was surprised at how much i liked this. the production is largely simple but good, and T has some real lyricism here.
This is really good. Hard-hitting and great beats. Long. Great shift to rock on Body count. Like the narrative interrmissions.
So this is the affable, older gentleman from the insurance and cereal commercials. Oh, Gee! It's hard to keep me hooked for over an hour, but this album sounded pretty good from start to finish. I was moving along the whole time. I was dreading the rap-metal track, but I really liked it. After having been expanding my hip hop/rap horizons, this album seems so much more self-aware and analytical than previous works. Not just "here were are," but "why we are here." I gained some understanding, insight, and appreciation from this album. That said, I completely missed the logic in "Bitches 2." So, "ladies," it's not so bad to be called a bitch because... now wait, what? And again so many references to women's body parts without ever really referring to a sentient human being attached to those parts...but...sigh. But aside from that general complaint about most hip hop, I enjoyed this album.
I certainly know Ice-T as a rapper, but I am much more familiar with him as Tutuola. I know very little of his rap repertoire, but as far as a rap album goes, I thought that this one was quite a good one. I like Ice-T’s rap-style and rhymes. The music was also highly engaging for me. I can see calling up this album when I am in a mood for some rap of the 90s…which is certainly not on the daily, but…
“Oh boy,” I thought as I looked at 73 minutes of 1991 rap. It isn’t my preferred genre. When I put this on and didn’t mind the first track. Then “First Impression” - not really a musical track but a monologue - took me by surprise and made me really laugh. Maybe there will be enough here to carry me through to the end… There is a lot of variety on these songs. Yes, there is a lot of guns and drugs. These lyrics aren’t for family listening. Still I was surprised how far between my pearl-clutching moments were. Ice T throws in some moments of humor and empathy and social messaging that made this feel better than a lot of rap I’ve heard. The self-reflection and a willingness to examine and play with the tropes of the genre I find very refreshing. Still not something I will probably listen to while relaxing and chilling, but I like it and respect its place on this list.
Still stands up, very fond memories of this as a teenager - was lent it from a friend and it felt genuinely dangerous to listen to.
I mean it's right in the title, he's the OG.
It's interesting listening to this with the knowledge that he ended up on Law & Order SVU.
I liked this much more than I expected to. Witty & angry at the same time.
Känner mig farlig
Amazingly progressive and political. Fun Zeppelin sample on one of the tracks.
I heard the ‘rock that shit homie’ sample then got sucked into listening to JSRF soundtrack. This was really good tho! Better than I expected
Pleasantly surprised
A little bloated, a little samey, but damn, Ice-T got more flow than I was expecting. I never gave him much credit; guess that's gonna change.
Ice T is not afraid to go beyond genre and reclaim rock and rolls black roots. This attitude and openness elevate this album and makes it stand out among early 90s gangster rap. He raps clearly and though he’s not the most acrobatic rapper, everything fits together well.
The best thing about this exercise is the great hip hop albums I've been introduced to. ICE Ts album Power was the first rap album I ever purchased back 35ish years ago. This album is wonderful. Intelligent, compelling, musically diverse and just fucking good. 4.5🌟
4/5. Actually pretty swag, got some attitude, pretty aight
The fact that Ice-T just threw in a rock song in this album is so cool. The rest of the album is very good too, always liked the 90's rap more than any other era of rap (yes I'm looking at you, mumble rap).
actually very enjoyable and flowed nicely
Fucking great. Despite variable production, this holds up well 30 years later, some skits aside.
Al principio me costó, pero es muy buen disco
7/10 pretty formulaic but good for a 1991 rap album
Picked up as it went along. Before my time, but He had a lot to say and said it well.
It's good, but again nobody needs well over an hour of it
A shade below the absolute best rap albums of the era and a touch too long at 72 minutes in length, but still pretty solid and worthy overall.
Old school gangsta rap. Definitely not my thing, just talking about how hard he is, how much sex he has, how much money and guns he has. It's produced well but just not my bag. I am giving it a higher rating because my opinion is based on my life experience and that I just don't enjoy the gangsta mentality or glorification, but I respect that this was impactful for black culture. Also the last track is the best part of the album, that was worth an extra point on itself too.
I respect Ice T more after listening to the album. It kept my attention. 3.5
I don't usually listen to rap, but when I do it is these OGs like Ice-T. This early stuff is raw and powerful, like the beginnings of punk. Really good album
this was great, even if i got a little tired of it by the end. the amount of cultural change t represented, and helped bring about, is hard to comprehend - but it was real, and that legacy is important. i got to see him w/bodycount in 1992 or so, and although i didn't care much one way or the other back then, i'm glad i got to be there for it.
Gutes Album, sozialkritische Texte.
Better than anticipated!
shit smacks, dude has the best skits, lots of amazing rhymes
Great album, would not have listened if it wasnt for this. New found appreciation for ice t.
Ice T at his best. Lyrics and music that are powerful and strong.
First introduction to gangsta rap, and honestly went in with a bad attitude. However, this is not bad and I enjoyed it but can't compare it to anything else in this genre. Black Sabbath being sampled in Midnight was fun. Body Count slaps and throws it over the top for me. 4.2/5.0.
I enjoyed this, there was a lot of swearing! I'd listen again.
Against me - white crosses
I love this album - listened to it repeatedly as a teen
Not really my genre, but Ice T is great.
Kunnon O.G. menoa.
Great one, very diverse although it is a bit long.
love that old school rap. good beats and doesn't get too indulgent with the skits.
I liked it more toward the end. I was shocked by the heavy metal song.
Oh man, this album. i remember listening to this with my uncle Baldi outside during cookouts, or just hanging out when he was over at my grandma's. much like with NWA, i listened to it again later in life to understand it, and this is another album that was speaking more than just rap. the fact that it uses his own rock band in it, and is brilliantly composed, it's an instant include in any playlist.
Casi 5
of its time but some good songs with some donkeys
Savage rhymes, hilarious and energising.
classic gangsta rap very well done
Really good. Very dense lyrically and 72mins is a lot of work. Never listened much as dismissed as west coast gangster bull shit but Ice T has a lot to say, on par with public enemy.
The music made me angry and the final not made me angrier. Reflects an entire way of life that I’m painfully ignorant to.
5/23 Ice-T was NICE, new found respect for him. Standout tracks: Mic Contract, Mind Over Matter, New Jack Hustler (Nino's Theme), Bitches 2, O.G. Original Gangster, Midnight, Lifestyles of the Rich and Infamous, Ya Shoulda Killed Me Last Year
Classic
Great lyrics and solid jams
It's more gangsta rap. It's GOOD gangsta rap, mind you -smart lyrics, sharp delivery, a genuine sense of humor, and more swagger than you could ask for. The multiple guest rappers mostly serve to show how much BETTER Ice is than them. But it's not my jam.
I wasn’t allowed to listen to Ice T when this album came out but my mom sure loves him now as an actor. O.G. is ok - it’s not his best work but it doesn’t suck.
Hey Ice T, do you think you could brag about being straight and having a big dick one more time?
Is it weird to say that Ice T's flow is kinda off throughout this album? The lyrics aren't particularly clever or neat and he constantly misses the beat. There's some pretty great production flying in the back of the beat, but it's a bloated album and the interstitial bits aren't very interesting at all (which admittedly isn't out of step with the rest of the generation). Overall Ice T is definitely the lesser of the two Ices. I did like Midnight, a dark horror-themed story. Also the line 'Yo yo mama got two feet growing out her titties/Bitch fell down and kept runnin'" from Fried Chicken is so absurd it's genuinely hilarious. The Tower's good. Or at least, I heard it's better than Civ 5 with the Brave New World Expansion pack. Fav tracks: Midnight, The Tower
This album is hilarious -- the woman doing the critical analysis is great. I also like the music; I feel like my tastes in rap were formed in this era, so this stuff just sounds right to me. Body Count rules! 3.5⭐️
Not the best thing that was released in 91 !
That's as high of a grade I can give to a gansta rap album
Hey look, it's the guy from Law and Order! It's kinda funny that a guy who got his start rapping about how much he hated cops ended up becoming well-known for playing a cop on a TV show. Was his music any good? Yeah, I'd say so. This isn't the peak of gangsta rap, but Ice-T was one of the first gangsta rap artists, so he does get bonus points for being an innovator. This album has some good elements, some flaws, and some things that are kinda in between. I think Ice-T's rapping is alright. Not the best, but not bad by any means. The album is definitely an early 90s affair in both rapping and production. Although, the production did have some pretty good moments, especially with some of the samples in the latter half of the album. Like, damn, the put the drums from "When the Levee Breaks" and the main riff from "Black Sabbath" into "Midnight"? That's sick as hell. I can tell that Ice-T is a bit of a rock fan himself. This is made rather obvious by the song "Body Count," which is just a straight-up rock song. It's quite good, honestly. The actual songs that exist on the album are all solid. Although, the album is padded a bit by what I could only call skits, leading to the album being a bit too long for my liking. None of these skits are bad per se, but they don't really add to the experience either. Still, I do wish that the album was shorter. Other than that, the album's a decent time. It's a little dated, but there are also some parts that have aged surprisingly well. Some of the messages still ring true to this day, and I have to give Ice-T props for having two separate songs on the album with lines that condemn homophobia. Good job Ice-T! So, yeah. Decent album. Solid 3/5.
I kinda liked this one. I don’t know why I’ve never seen this album cover before.
Very funny to think I was first introduced to this guy on NBC procedurals.
3 almost 4 for me. Probably my favorite rap album on the list so far.
Review - never really listened to Ice T and had this idea he was corny but this is a pretty good album. Score - 7/10 Need to listen? YES
Good
While I'm very clearly not the target demographic for this album in any way whatsoever, I do recognize that it's one of the foundational gangsta rap records. Beats and flow wise, it's another rap album that's transitioning from 1980s to 1990s production, and like pretty much every rap album I've ever heard, it'd be better without the skits (thankfully there aren't too many). I did like the "Body Count" track quite a bit, but that might well be because I owned the Body Count album back in the day. Of the more traditionally rap-style tracks, I enjoyed "Mind over Matter," "Straight Up N****," and the title track a lot.
Nothing really stands out and goes on a bit too long but still decent
Its odd hearing a rap album and thinking they should have gone with a hard rock album by the same artist but his best work is Body Count. That is not to say this isn't a important or good album but its kind of just average.
pretty fun
He just doesn’t have a voice that i like too much. Kinda sounds like if my uncle sat down to rhyme over some random (not super strong) beats. I expected it to be a little better. Also it’s super long
Takie na 3. Nie urywa w sumie, ale nie jest też złe.
Not bad, but not good either. A lot of songs, most with a similar sound. Favorite parts, sadly, were the Black Sabbath and Zeppelin samples.
Never been a big fan of the self aggrandizing that comes with old school hip hop as it usually feels performative. The music is enjoyable to listen to however partially due to nostalgia and a lot of the tight drum lines with clean bass that show up in a lot of the songs. T's lyrics take the front stage, he's got decent rhyme schemes and clarity but still rings a little hollow to my ears. A lot of the interlude tracks seem to be played for comedy or lightheartedness, a lot of "candid" conversations thrown in, usually about how T is great and very very real, helps break up the album which is pretty long. I liked Body Count as a genre break as well.
Not my taste but it was genuinely great
Pues lo escuché de fondo y no me molestó
Honestly went into it expecting not to like it much but was pleasantly surprised. A surprising amount of range.
How much i liked it 1/5 How good Ice T is at his chosen art 5/5
actual rapping is quite good, lyrics are all over the place, but the beats are just really not doing it for me.
It's fine. I'm not a huge fan of his vocal style, but his lyrics are on point for the time. I can't say it's terribly relevant to today's time. It's fine. Album cover is atrocious. Just bad.
Hard-core unk rap. But it was great, really enjoyed it.
296/1089 First Impression is kinda iconic icl otherwise, it was a chill listen but just not really for me so a bit middling faves: OG Original Gangster, The Tower 51/100
O,G, Original Gangster is the fourth studio album from LA-based rapper Ice-T, who went on to a very successful acting career after establishing his musical success. This album is regarded as the best of his recorded work. Ice-T creates eloquent rants set to a looped break beat. Some of the tracks show an introspective, thoughtful side, like "Mind over Matter." Unfortunately, most focus on a celebration of violence: "Home of the Bodybag," "Body Count," and "Street Killer."
Cool album! I never expected to say that about a rap record, but this is both funny and musically really well done Body Count is a great rap/rock song that's made it into my collection now, but I'll be listening to the whole collection again very soon
Was nice to hear him and consider the time period this was in.
I felt nostalgia listening to this album. Thanks for the trip on memory lane. I was going to say I liked him better as an actor, but that's not true either. He seems like a good, hard working guy. I respect that.
Favorite Track: OG Original Gangster
A classic.
If this was shorter, I probably would have enjoyed this more, because there really are some interesting beats and samples and sounds, and his flow and tone varies quite a bit, too. But it does often settle into some kinda stale rhythms and rhymes. So, liked it both more and less than I expected. 3/5
This is a cool ass album. The beats are dope, the vibe is immaculate and he drops some bars. Enjoyed it! 8/10 [KEEP]
Sounds a bit dated over the decades, which I guess is normal, but the way he here and their bites the styles (and partly lyrics) of other rappers (Rakim, Beastie Boys) is pretty revealing. But all in all a timeless classic.
Et ålreit west coast hip hop-album. Synes produksjonen er jevnt godt hele veien gjennom. Litt for langt og uten de virkelige høydepunktene, men helt innafor. Top 3: Home of the Bodybag, Bitches 2, Fly By
An important album in the development of rap. But doesn’t hold up, flow feels simplistic now.
how many law and order jokes are there
Never really explored Ice T before, I don’t mind his music but I prefer other rap styles in truth. The album is too long but it does get interesting toward the end with Bodycount, which is a straight up rock song and the album transforms into something a little different from there on.
This was alright, didn't make a massive impression on me. I appreciated the point of the album but I didn't feel particularly moved by it sonically or lyrically.
Not my style but interesting and clever lyrics :))
It sounds a bit dated now but it’s listenable rap music of its time.
I enjoyed this more than I expected to. I'd never really listened to him before.
I like that he talks about his fear of flying . Real shit
I definitely prefer 90s rap compared to 00s and later rap. This was not bad. I enjoyed the listen. My only complaint might be that it was a bit long. I remember Body Count from the 90s. Used to be a firm favorite request on the dancefloor when I was Dj'ing. Forgot all about it. Standout songs were Ziplock and Body Count. 3 stars
you know what I'm sayin'
Who knew the guy from Law and Order could rap? I honestly didn't know what to expect, but this was pretty cool. Sure it felt like 1991 but that was also a cool throwback. Enjoyed it but it did overstay its welcome just a tad.
Stressig. Hätte mehr erwartet. Wieviele Titel kann ein Album haben?
Hard to judge for me. I thought it was going to feel long but the switch up near the end to rock in body count. It felt at times like there was too much glamour or fantasising on violence and not enough reflection (which was present in places).
The production is very sophisticated throughout; modern beats which other rappers of the early 90s would have killed for. I appreciate the social conscience of the lyrical content when it moves beyond braggadociousness. The overall effect is surprisingly friendly given the “gangster” label. Gangster rap has a sensitive side. If I was to critique this I’d say the rapping itself is decent, but not mind blowing, and the project is overlong with several of the songs covering similar ground. I was happy to see the inclusion of his heavy metal side project though - impressive range.
It was good but not my favorite definitely a low 3
Would have got a 4 but didn't include the SVU theme.
I can see how this was an important and controversial album when it was released. A building block of modern rap and lyrics that pushed against a lot of "civil society". The rapping doesn't feel smooth, however. Some songs are poignant an reflective, others are just not great. A mixed bag for sure.
Hmmm. Well, this album was controversial when it came out and it still can raise a hackle listening now. This was the first time I ever listened to an Ice-T album that wasn’t Body Count. Same idea, less metal riffing. Personally, this ain’t my culture so it doesn’t resonate as much, except maybe First Impression and OG, which was totally speaking my truth…or dreams. Whatever. Bitches was kind of funny as it seemed liked a response to Queen Latifah’s UNITY. I do appreciate how the music and rapping changed up across the album, from the slow OG to the uptempo Fly By, which was a pretty good track. I get why it’s here. Collectively it’s a good album and great production. I just don’t think it’s do me any more. Watching Ice T as a cop on TV or doing geriatric commercials, I don’t think it’s him anymore either….
Random thoughts: * I was kind of pissed at this album choice, thinking it wasn't the right Ice T album, but then they had the Bodycount preview song and this was a worthy addition to this collection for time capsule purposes with both gangsta rap covered and the rock/rap crossover he is also know for. * I prefer the Bodycount album but this was a pretty good listen. There was plenty interesting going on. * The crudeness of this music has to be overlooked which is problematic. * Anyway, solid choice with the Bodycount, the New Jack City song, and some of Ice T's signature gangster rap. Really captured the place and time.
So not my thing, but seems okay for something I've got no feeling for
not my taste but i like body count 🔥
A classic, but not so much my thing.
A LOT better than I expected - A LOT - but still pretty stupid without much to redeem it. I would be impressed if anyone is still listening to this by choice.
It's nice to see Ice T represented in this collection, and while this isn't a great album (and definitely *way* too long), it seems like a good selection from his fairly lengthy discography (especially if you include Body Count). Like so many late 80s/early 90s rap albums, music definitely takes a distant back seat to the lyrics, but at least Ice T is a good storyteller, and the tracks rarely stick exclusively to the stereotypical gangster themes of sex and violence (thankfully, as they're not very good when they do). The best of the lot for me are "New Jack hustler", the title track, the PE-influenced "Fly by", "Midnight" (mainly because it samples Black Sabbath's "Black Sabbath", a nice crossover), and the depressing "The tower"; I really wanted to enjoy "Body count", his introduction to his rock/rap/metal/funk band, but I was surprised how weak that track was. Reading up on this album was also a nice reminder of his fairly extensive film and television career (for example, I had no idea that he's played the role of Odafin Tutuola since 2000 on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit", which qualifies him as the longest-running male series actor in American TV history), and unlike his fellow SoCal rapper/actor Ice Cube, Ice T hasn't descended into weird and sad conspiracy theories and questionable politics.
It's alright
Some good, stuff some meh. Not bad.
I think I was expecting a bit more
Very simple rhyming schemes on most songs
Best Ice T album. Not a big rap fan so downgraded rating. Still enjoyed listening and understand why it is on the list. 0 songs added to playlist.
I never imagined I would listen to 72 minutes of an Ice-T album, but here we are. It was ok, pretty typical gangsta rap.
Better than mumble rap, that's for sure. 3/5
Still relevant, love the production and beats
Solid West coast 90s gangsta rap. Needs to be considered in the rap context of the time.
6/10
This has dated in many ways. The casual misogyny, the language but also musically. This feels like the last wave of this form of hip-hop before Nas and Wu-Tang revolutionise it. That said though there’s lots to enjoy. Interesting samples including black sabbath and the usual jazz funk stuff. His rhymes are interesting and punchy and he’s an engaging rapper. Plenty to enjoy
This album is good at what it is which is a love letter to and from Ice T. There is a lot of influence from this album but I'm not sure that it's great. It's long, the songs are too long and when it trys to be subversive or transgressive, it comes off as kind of tone deaf. Perhaps at the time reclaiming the N-word or saying men can be bitches 2 was interesting or suprising. Time has upped the corniness. Overall it's a solid project but it's played a bit too straight to age well.
More creative than I was expecting. A good amount of social justice and fun. Also, he had a track that was a metal song.
Some good moments on this, and some less so. Light 3
Is 24 tracks and 1h 12mins of Ice T on one album too much? Maybe a bit. But i do like these older hiphop albums because of the really clever usage of samples. 'Midnight' is really good example of this by using Led Zeppelin drumbeat combined with Black Sabbath guitar riff.
I like my Ice-T more in black hoodie. But there were few bangers in this album as well.
I've had this LP in my collection since the early 90's. Time has not been too kind to it, the samples and beats feel mostly very outdated. Overall the tracks sound stripped down to bare minimum, even tho back in the day I remember feeling they were huge, Midnight is still banger tho. I didn't like the talkey intros and interludes then, nor do I like them now. Some of the the lyrical flow still works really well tho.
Pretty fun, a ltitle long, not my fav era of rap. Can appreciate it tho
Stark trea, bättre än väntat
Inget fan av gangstarap men det här har mycket catchy o groovy grejer ändå. Inte fullkomligt in your face kassa texter.
Good album. OG gangster rap. Got some good songs. A bit too long tho.
Great west coast
3 1/2. Very enjoyable.
The rap rock song was kinda interesting
Early 90s west coast rap has never been my thing, but it's okay. The beats are too repetitive and most of the songs drone on too long, but it's a solid 3
I like this
Как-то не ложиться рэп. Прослушал, пролетело мимо.
The Good: We are getting a refreshment! The Bad: The ice tea is not sweetened… The Ugly: bitter face… I don’t know if Ice T is the original o.g. however, and let me, again, preface this by stating that I don’t like rap in general, this album was a surprise for me. So here’s to the O.G. not being gangster all the time! 3*
I wasn’t enjoying this at all at the start but a couple of tracks in it started to pick up. I could live without the skits throughout it but I could say that about every rap album that has them. Overall I liked it well enough but I don’t see myself ever going back to it after today. Top Track - Midnight, great use of a Black Sabbath sample. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
24 songs says something. It may not say that they are all good but it’s alway a breath of fresh air to see more tracks than usual. Even if a handful are basically skits. I’ve never seen Ice T as a solid rapper. He always seemed to be stuck in that 80’s hip hop sound. And that can be good. I mean, NWA could do it and live happily. I think it’s just Ice’s delivery. There’s only one way for him. Sort of angry, sort of stand offish. Every track. It wasn’t until he created Body Count that I felt his came into his own. Never mind that shitty tv show acting. This isn’t even close to a Dr.Dre The Chronic or any NWA album. Not even Ice Cube at his worst. It’s just ok and that seems to be the pattern I’m seeing with this generator app Choice cut: OG
