Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Holy crap this is a long album. This sounds like some GTA San Andreas style rap. Does Midnight sample both When the Levee Breaks and Black Sabbath? Body Count being half heavy metal song is awesome.

I miss slow rap. Rap I can understand all the words, delight in the clever and silly rhymes. This was such a good listen for that.

Not really my kind of music, but I enjoyed it. It was fun, you could see a lot of influence from this album in hip hop to come. Just not really my thing :)

fuck bush and his crippled bitch!

pretty fun album that doesn't find that much purchase in my brain

Although I never paid too much attention to this era of hip hop, Ice-T stood out for me, especially considering it’s West Coast. West Coast hip hop always seemed sleazy, over-commercialized, and too polished, while East Coast had that raw, gritty, DIY feel that I usually gravitate toward. Ice-T, however, feels different. Maybe he was at his peak before the West Coast sound really became solidified, but he’s always walked his own path, maintaining that rawness and edge that I appreciate.

ok, aber nicht extrem spektakulär. der flow ist beeindruckend.

Top 3: 1. The Tower 2. Midnight 3. Body Count First Hip-Hop album I've gotten so far. Unfortunately didn't have much time with it, but I liked the attempt at a rock song and the Halloween Theme sample.

Good for gangster rap which is not my favorite style but I still enjoyed It.

This was awesome! I dont think I heard any of these tracks before, but I have heard some of the references, so it was neat to see those fall into place. Very interesting album and definitely sounds like something from 1994, but def not 91.

What the fuck hahaha. Best goed ook. Oke oke, zeker niet mijn muziek, maarr ergens wel van genoten. Vooral dat rock nummer was echt wel grappig. en ook tof dat ie plots zoiets in dat album stopt. Prima, 3 reten.

Another talented badass who’s been embraced by TV watching grandmas everywhere. It’s a shame you can’t listen to this album in public because it is worth hearing.

Aggressive, dark and confrontational. Ice T was never my favorite west coast emcee, but his presence was most certainly felt throughout. He had his own way of evoking emotion from a lifestyle most don’t know anything about, myself included, but he made it relatable and understood.

#836. Hey, I didn't know that guy from Law and Order was on this list. 3/5: meh

I l o v e the beats specifically on Mic Contract and Escape From The Killing Fields but I am not a huge fan of Ice T's lyrics or delivery unfortunately.

Very good album,

I'm no hip hop expert and gansta isn't my favourite sub-genre. Scans as more east coast than west, but that makes sense in context. I find he gets stuck/comfortable in a particular cadence, but the departures from that are the standouts. Body Count is amazing.

Like it 3/5

I surprisingly didn’t hate it, but I also never need to listen to it again.

Fairly expected rap from Ice T

From rappin about committing homicides to investigating homicides. 5/10

Whilst this is an important album in the pantheon of rap, I don't think that it's aged particularly gracefully. It sounds quite cheesy and trite at times, but still worth a listen for rap historians.

Listens: 2.5 Standout Tracks: First Impressions, Bitches 2, Prepared to Die, Escape from the Killing Fields, Street Killer I can't help but laugh at this album. There's some good shit on it, but its also just really amusing. You've got Ice T in 1991 singing about being an OG, and then I just picture him on Law & Order as a police. The First Impressions skit also cracks me up. In fact, all of the skits on this album are pretty great, especially Street Killer. Ice T isn't the best rapper out there. Some of his rhymes are too simple, but what he lacks in lyrical style he makes up for with the persona and the bravado he brings to the album. If Ice T doesn't like the rating, I give him, I guess he's just gonna have to... crunch the numbers (if you know, you know).

Much of the gangsta pimp schtick hasn't aged well - but a lot of the production still sounds quite fresh and the Ice persona is pretty entertaining. And when the themes turn more politically conscious, it's much more on point, to my ear at least.

Not my usual listen, but not so bad. There was more integration of sample layers than others at the time. Enjoyed the hard rock sounds on Body Count and the Halloween sample on The Tower.

Day731 - ice-t was saying the same things in ninety-one as a few others rappers i just liked hearing it from public enemy and third bass better. the new jack hustler is his best song

Well surprise surprise I quite like this. Inventive rap and inventive music. I sure don't like when it exercises tired gangsta tropes, but damn they are mostly cast in an inventive way. The musicality is what hits me the most.

You either die a hero or live long enough to become a recurring character on a syndicated crime procedural show. 3/5

90s hip hop.

Goed rap album. Luistert prima weg

Love the interludes! A fun and underrated album you can get lost in. Not my go to genre but can appreciate it.

Listened while dozing

right place right time - I remember when it came out and we were all like, 'H-U-S-T-L-E-R, HUSLAAAA ' .. loved him. now all that angry F*ck tha police' just turns me off but I understand the importance and the beats work..

This reminds me of the finger shock game where each person places one finger in a slot, a light flashes randomly, and when it stops, the person the light points to gets a mild electric shock. It creates a lot of tension and expectation of what's next. There's relief throughout as others get the light, and when it's finally your turn, it's fun...energizing.

My head is not really in the game today. I defer to the GOAT Robert Christgau on this one to get the view from 1991... "Learning and diversifying, remembering where he comes from and sticking to what he knows, Ice-T wins big as the old school shakes out. He won't desert the hards because a hard he remains; his violence is pervasive and graphic because he knows brutalization from the inside. But he's nothing if not a moralist, and so the new jack drunk dies in his Benz, the cops break down the gangbanger's door, his gays are left to live their own lives, and his prematurely ejaculated sex jam is a dis on the horny fool who slavers for it. Since most of what I know about the hard audience comes from rap records, I can't guarantee he'll get away with it. But I can guarantee that this one has something to teach everyone who can stand to listen to it and almost everyone who can't." These men speak truth - both Ice -T and Bobby C - something we could use a little more of is 2025. If nothing else you got to respect that.

I’m not massive on rap, so I don’t know too much about your Icey T’s or your Scoopy Scoopy Dog Dog’s… but this was alright. It feels more 80’s rap than that ‘gangsta shit’ that became massive in the 90’s, and I kind of dig that. I like the tracks that are a bit funky, and parts of this were pretty funny too. But man, why are rap albums always so long? There’s not enough variance across this album to justify the runtime, I’m sorry. Even with the rock track. And anyone who disagrees with that can, you know, suck my dick.

Either I’m becoming inoculated to gangster rap or this is different and better. I would not dis Ice T.

Pretty long album. I like “New Jack Hustler” best, and generally prefer the tracks that have some of the horns/jazz samples. Interesting that in 1991 you had to spell out what OG means - today it’s such a common phrase.

What I would expect from Ice T. It's old school hip hop and rap. I like the album though. Probably wouldn't own it but I enjoy listening.

Bon rap us a l'ancienne c ok

I don't know, it's just not for me

An actually decent rap album. Some garbage on here, but much lower than most. 3/5

Solid, solid rap from Ice-T. Honestly one of my favorites, so not a surpirse that I liked the album. Still had too many skits, though.

rock/rap. OG. message.

Started out as really tedious ganster rap. I always find the idea that singing some poetry to a beat is a hardcore thing a bit ridiculous, here especially. But a couple of good tracks began to change my mind. Bitches 2 was the first where my ear pricked up and I liked Midnight a lot, with its narrative. So the back half of this album is much better than the first, it won me over.

Good beats, powerful lyrics, and then a heavy metal track half way through.

80’s / 90’s hip-hop that is engaging and listenable. I can’t follow the lyrics but it’s probably not really for me.

Your momma got two feet outta her titties. Bitch fell down and still runnin.

I am not a hip-hop fan but I actually enjoyed this one, especially the politically charged lyrics

A little bloated but i love that early 90s hip-hop sound.

Interesting bits but gosh it’s long

Appreciate Ice-T.

2.5 flow, 4 star beats.

LA is city of body bags, Berlin is city of doggy bags

Hard as fuck, damn Ice.

It was decent but very long. And a bit samey after a while.

Gangsta rap is not my thing. The album had some good moments, but it was too long in the end. Other than that, nothing really bad.

Too long

Old school 90’s rap

Surprisingly good rap album, all things considered.

Old school rap. Interesting and engaging.

Great album with a little added rock element. Story telling was pretty great as well

3.4/5 Pretty good old school gangsta rap. Not ridiculously good, but solid.

This was a bit of a blast from the past. I bought the CD when it came out, and saw Ice-T on the inaugural Lollapalooza tour. I don't really like gangster rap, but this is probably the best album of the genre.

Better than expected

Long before SUV the lyrical gangster - I know it's not THE lyrical gangster but someone throwing 2 dollar words into rap music....

I like to think I’m fairly well versed in 90s hip-hop but I’ve never listened to much Ice-T. This is a pretty good album. The production and beats are great, and there’s a good variety. Body Count really adds some variety, was not expecting a metal song on a hip-hop album.

Not my genre but expect it is considered good album.

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Really enjoyed the song where he called out love for his homes, not a diss track, sort of like a song of little loves notes, so sweet.

2.5 stars Over long. Too many tracks, too many skits- a victim of its time. There are good songs and good rhymes but it starts to blend together. I’d take a few of the tracks and ditch the album.

I grew up on this stuff. I was a white kid with a Mexican accent who lived in a semi-urban area, watched Colors when I was too young for it on my parents' cable subscription, and rocked KDAY in Los Angeles all day and all night. By the time this record dropped, however, I had moved on to punk rock.  I remember seeing Ice-T (and Body Count), at the first Lollapalooza. I wasn't a huge fan of Body Count, but looking back, I can appreciate his attempt to branch out. I also remember when he played the show he tried to walk the eponymous song's title back a little. I mean, there was a ton of controversy around him at the time for the "Cop Killer" track, and also a ton of heat about the glorification of violence and misogyny in gangsta rap. But also, being Lollapalooza, I think because he was playing to a bunch of alternative kids who did not have any point of reference of the West Coast gangsta lifestyle, he said the meaning of the song title is that we are all "original" in the sense of having individuality, and that the gangsta part is because, and I quote: "we all gangstas." I called bullshit then. I call bullshit now. It was also because Ice-T was kinda a poser trying to grab some of that mountain of cash piling up for everyone glorifying the thug life on tape at the time.  I think it's hilarious that a dude who wrote the song "Cop Killer" went on to play nothing but cops on TV for the rest of his career. And that one unbelievable line he delivered in New Jack City where he tells Wesley Snipes, "I wanna shoot you so bad, my dick's hard."  As for the record itself, it's decent. "Midnight" is the standout banger, and the rest is pretty serviceable. The skits and faux interviews have aged poorly and seem theatrical and cheesy. "Body Count" distinguishes itself as a very safe hard rock track that, although genre-breaking at the time, feels forced and pretty tame. This has a classic hip-hop production and delivery that brings me back to the 80s and contains echoes of Eric B And Rakim, the Breakin' movies, Schooly D, RUN-DMC, and so on. It's pretty slick and well-performed; almost to a degree that makes it feel a bit inauthentic. It hits the right notes in a way that makes it feel like a soundtrack to a movie. There's a sort of manipulation going on that feels a bit overproduced and polished. That is almost made plain in the some of the skits about "having to do a sex song," which gives it this sort of paint-by-numbers feel.  It's as if Ice-T on the album is a character that Tracy Marrow is playing. It mostly works, but also does feel a bit like a costume. That said, it's an easy listen and I don't hate it.  The album art is a cool concept but an extremely shitty layout. I get what they are going for, but the balance is way off and the sense of symmetry is compromised severely. The powder blue type also makes this thing seem as hard core as a bottle of baby powder. Nope.

Era-defining but because of that extremely dated. Hard hitting but basic beats without a ton of variety. His delivery is extreme and the material explosive, covering police violence, domestic/family abuse, racism, sexism (both pro and con), money, drugs, tits, ass - the whole gamut. It really seems like he had a ton to get off his chest in the late 80s/early 90s, said his peice, and moved on. The hardcore track is a really funny amalgam of hardcore punk and hair metal - what are the wierd white kids in LA in 1989 doing? Let's show that we can do that too!

Idk I'm just not really interested but not bad

I knew Ice T was a rapper in his previous life. I've enjoyed him as a character on Law & Order. I'm not a big rap fan, but this album was at least interesting.

I liked the New Jack Swing of this, and I also felt that this was full of thesis statements, most of which I appreciated. I liked the track where he was talking about his creative process.

bissl zu lang

Ice-T aka de König Water-T erinnert mich zu fest a Rick & Morty zum ihn jetzt no chöne ernst z lose. Aber für Old-School Hiphop Hains eig no ganz solid gfunde und het mi 0 gstört. 3 mal es get swiftyyy und shit on the flooooor!

Damn he's cool The "First Impression" interlude is really cool and works so well with the opening track Some lyrics aged poorly tho, all this "I write rhymes like algebra" is so late 80's - early 90's "Bitches 2" is really nice, so distorted but nice Its pretty rough but I see the vision and respect his social stances

Maybe I wasn’t in the right mindset for this… or maybe it’s because I can’t really relate to the deeper messages, but I just couldn’t get in to this record. Revolutionary for its time, I’m sure. It’s just not for me.

Maybe it’s for the best that I-T has stuck to acting…

One of the better offerings of early 90s rap. Plenty of decent tracks to chose from, good variety, nice choice of samples, would listen again. 3.5 stars.

Starts of sounding very outdated. It gets better later on, but not to the point that I like it. Ice-T has a more sinister vibe than most of his contemporaries. I think that's his main contribution to the genre and the reason he belongs in the book.

Delightful. I saw Ice T and Coco once when I lived in New York. They were seated outside at a restaurant and were sweetly smiling at all the gawkers. Forgot about that till now.

It's a well known fact that most of the artists in the gangsta rap era were but actually affiliated. Ice T, though is allegedly one of the rare A.G.s(authentic gangsters). And i know Ice T had a lot of influence and a lot of his lines on this album and others get quoted and referenced to this day with a lot of us not knowing where it came from so this is an important piece of history. But that doesn't matter because all the tracks in the first half or so sounded very much like a put on caricature of hood life made to sell records. And it felt corny. Almost like a parody. A lot of that is, for sure, the early rap style and hour basic it sounds to 21st century ears but i couldn't get past it. The second half of the album leaned more into having a message about civil rights, overpolicing, poverty, etc. but a good message never impressed me much in music. I need it to be music first. I did like the storytelling in midnight and The Tower was about on par with any of Johnny Cash's songs from Fulsom Prison. I can't give half stars, so I'm rounding up to 3

Seventy-two minutes of exactly what you'd expect from Ice-T: profane, proud, and pointed, with his trademark noir-narrator delivery stretched across more material than anyone asked for. At its best, the sprawl justifies itself—“Mic Contract” is a fast-twitch radio play, the title track flirts with West Coast bounce, “Midnight” rides a bruising KRS-One sample like it’s built for “New Jack Hustler,” “Pulse of the Rhyme” veers into proto-horrorcore with a mean bassline, and “The Tower” smolders with atmosphere. Elsewhere, he dips into Cube-style sociopolitics (“Escape from the Killing Fields”) without Cube’s rasp, and metal crossover novelty (“Body Count”) without a convincing bark, while a five-minute intro suite and oddball outro (“Ya Shoulda Killed Me Last Year”) underline how badly this needed an editor. For an artist already more icon than innovator by ’91, though, the respectable sprawl is still worth a listen.

Boy, was this long. I liked some of it. I got caught on Midnight, feeling like I'd heard the song before, but not realizing why until suddenly it hit me that I was also listening to When the Levee Breaks and Black Sabbath. So, that was cool. In the end, though, my patience for this album wore thin.

3/5 - I needed to hear this because it’s the closest I’ve come to enjoying a 90s gangster rap album. Don’t care for skits, but the samples were really good throughout. New Jack Hustler, Mind Over Matter, Fly By, Escape From the Killing Fields were standout tracks for me.

Ice-T might be the original hard core hip hop artist. I liked it when he used rock music to back up his powerful lyrics. It's a solid album. There's lots of variety, and the beats still hold up today.

This album sits at an interesting point in time, it's one of those albums from that limbo of 1989 to mid 1991 that don't feel quite 90s yet but also doesn't feel quite 80s anymore, it's a mix that occurs in many albums from different genres. I think what makes O.G. so distinct is exactly that juggling of more rudimentary 80s delivery and some sound choices with 90s hardcore rap production and theming. You'd think the album has an identity crisis with that kind of sound plus the 70 min length making it an uneven slog but instead it manages to be mostly pretty good, even the skits don't feel like a total slog partly because they tie into the other tracks pretty nicely and because Ice T is charismatic so it's hard not to be invested into what he's saying or how he's saying it, a skit like "What About Sex?" Is hilarious as a parody of the typical sex skit but also the way the joke's delivered made it even better. Another strength in the album is how the sequencing works to balance the shorter skits with the songs which have a nice kind of variety, not too attached to any one style or way to make a song, hell we get a few horrorcore songs (Midnight and The Tower), a rock song (Body Count... ofc) or a dance song (Fly By), Ice-T makes up for his weaknesses like the rudimentary delivery by being eclectic and knowing how to fit himself on these songs, which really works out for this album's benefit. Honestly, it's as fun as it is underrated, I never expected this to be as fun and consistent as I thought it would be, definetely will be returning to some of these songs.

I've always liked Mr T (not that one), he seems like a well-adjusted chap in interviews. Not the biggest fan of his music however. He has a lot to answer for, being one of the earliest progenitors of gangster rap. And I found out today his real name is Tracy. It's like when found out Big Daddy's real name was Shirley. Although he revels in shootin' and humpin', he's not as overwhelmingly big-headed as some of his gun-toting stablemates. And there's plenty of levity here. A late album run with the superb soul sampling of 'Pulse of the Rhyme'; and the Halloween-sampling 'The Tower' proves Ice is not just a one-trick pony. But surely a judicious editor could've brought some well-needed brevity to proceedings, which suffers from major bloat at over an hour.

This is a busy record. Problematic? It feels more like theater than menace. I enjoyed it for the ride, even if I won’t be spinning it much more. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions: - New Jack Hustler - Body Count - The Tower

I was never a fan of Ice T in my younger years but he’s someone I’ve got into through collecting vinyl and now own several of his albums including this one. I’m not going to pretend it’s amazing, it comes across more like a mixtape than an album, jumping from one thing to the next, including adding a **Body Count** track, but I do love this funk sample heavy, under produced era of hip hop and Ice T comes with bags of character. Of course it’s too long and some of the skits are shit. He does sample Sabbath though which is a plus!

while admittedly much of this album sounds dated, there are some pretty cool songs on here. “midnight” and “body count” particularly stood out to me, the latter of which kicked off his metal side project of the same name. the rest of the album is what one might expect of a gangsta rap album, hyper misogynistic with over the top violence.

This dude went on to play a cop for 25 years and counting.

Longer than I'd like but it stays fun throughout

normally I take off a star for homophobia so I guess I should add one for his defense lol

Some real gangster shit. Not sure it needed to be that long though. Best song: Lifestyles of the Rich and Infamous

Very NWA influenced I'd say, a lot of the beats had that droning sound under the beat that straight outta Compton has. At the risk of my repeating myself I thought this sounded pretty good if you ignored the content and tiringly gagsta if you didn't. As with similar albums it's the narrowness of the themes that makes it a slog, Ice doesn't say anything he hasn't already made clear after the first couple of songs. The rock song was an unexpected diversion and I did like the sound but unlikely to return.

Production was pretty good. It’s a bit dated in quite a few aspects, but more or less holds up

Never really listened to his music much before...interesting to see he's as mediocre of a musician as he is an actor. It honestly isn't really bad, it's just not as good as I would have expected considering how much of a legend he is.

Partially responsible for the rise of gangster rap, the album is thrilling, violent, misogynistic and hard hitting, all the hallmarks of a typical gangster rap album. It is also way too much. There are some great songs on here such as Lifestyles of the Rich and Infamous, OG Original Gangster and Home of the Body Bag but the album is relentlessly dark and aggressive so I find it hard to listen in one sitting. One song that goes against the grain is The Tower with a Tubular Bells beat and slow sinister rapping. As a bonus is the song Body Count, an uncompromising drum fueled metalish rock song.

Man love some old school Gen X gangsta rap. The songs that drove Tipper Gore mad. Solid album for Ice T it just didn’t age well

Made it halfway and it was shocking in ways

A little long but the songs were certainly enjoyable

a funny album, not quite my style but I can see the appeal

Sad that the same themes of police brutality and mass incarceration for people of color are still around 35 years later. I grabbed a couple of songs to re-listen to later on and overall enjoyed the album.

Not a bad album, but not many certified bangers either. And it drags on a bit too long. Love the Black Sabbath samples in Midnight and the Body Count preview

First half was hard to get through. Things turned around at Body Count - I didn't expect a rock track on a gangsta rap album but it was a nice surprise. Overall, it painted a good picture of the place and time it came from.

This album honestly got better and better as I listened to it. I was kinda put off by Ice T’s flow, but it’s almost like it got better later on in the album. I also loved Body Count, and his message for it.

I’m not one to complain when the groove of an early 90s rap album actually ages well, but I will complain about the length of said album. I think I’d rate this a little higher if it was about half an hour shorter. I was also very happy to have very limited skits included in the tracks, I feel like that’s an anomaly for the era. Not bad but not anything I’ll seek out again.

Ice T is pretty mid but this is alright

idek what to say the guy was just speaking truth the entire time and it sounded good

Home of the bodybag: 6/10 First impression: intro Ziplock: 5/10 Mic contract: 9/10 Mind over matter: 8.5/10 New jack hustler: 7/10 Ed: 8/10 Bitches 2: 8/10 Straight up nigga: 7/10 O.G. original gangster: 6/10 The house: 8/10 Evil E- What about sex: interlude Fly by: 6/10 Midnight: 9/10, lyrics fire Fried chicken: 5/10 MVP's: 3/10 Lifestyles of the rich and infamous: 7/10 Body count: 9/10 the switch🔥 Prepared to die: 5/10 Escape from the killing fields: 8/10 Street killer: 6/10 Pulse of the rhyme: 5/10 The tower: 8/10 Ya shoulda killed me last year: outro overall: Not my style. But fire beats and great lyrics

Brilliant to hear ‘proper’ rap. This is a seminal album - its influences are all over the map. While it’s unfortunate that ICE-T’s gangsta roots were replaced (relatively quickly) by a ‘hard-core’ made-for-TV persona, the album nevertheless holds up. Unlike its creator, when offered lots and lots of money.

Good stuff for the times. Now Act!

This kind of music gets stale for me pretty fast, but he's killing it lyrically. He's quite good at one narrow kind of performance. It also reminded me of how divisive Tipper Gore was, to the point that she's the only Second Lady that I can remember.

"Is this a nightmare or the American dream?" Listened to B4? No Tracks Already Saved on Spotify: 2 - O.G. Original Gangster, New Jack Hustler (Nino's Theme) Standout Tracks: O.G. Original Gangster, New Jack Hustler (Nino's Theme), Lifestyles of the Rich and Infamous, Body Count, The Tower (74/100)

Dope production and bars, albeit way too many songs.

-not the absolute best 90s gangsta rap by a long shot imo. kinda felt a little bit corny at times even -that being said it was still pretty solid, better than a lot of the rap this list has had me listen to. some good rhythms + the rock influence was a nice touch -Favorites are Mind over Matter, Fly By, and The Tower

24 songs and 72 minutes is just too long to make a good album. Some of the music is great, but there's entirely too much filler, including far too many interludes/skits. 2.5/5.0: Mixed

Cool. But. It got tiring

Ice T's best for sure. He has his place. There are several highlights (New Jack Hustler, Body Count, others), but it does feel a bit long. End of day, this album is the epitome of Ice T's place in rap and music generally: a bubble artist. Just on the cusp of a greatest list, but not quite on a greatest list.

This isn’t as dated as the LL Cool J album but it’s up there. 90s badass-erry just hits different today.

This dude looks like and sounds like Detective Odafin Tutuola

Classic 90s hiphop

Ice gets a lot of flack for his acting career but this album is solid. Def an acquired taste to bridge the generational gap. High 3/5 from me. - SC Not a bad album. Am I the only one who finds skits in albums corny? -Germoses.

simple, sencillo, eficaz

V provocative!

Hustler is a classic jam.

I’m not a fan of rap, but this is ok. Hugely overlong, but at least there aren’t too many stupid skits. It’s fine.

Simple booooom bap

It was good.

It’s pretty heavy and gritty, certainly of that time period. Will be a bit much for many people’s ears.

Оуджи неплох когда начитывает хорроркор, остальное увы состарилось

The O.G. of SVU

Not sure I agree with this album being on this list. It's fine overall, but there's better rap/hip-hop out there that was probably denied being on her because this album was selected. My biggest criticism is it's far too long and some of the songs just overstay their welcome. ICE-T's flow is pretty sloppy at times and he doesn't mix it up when he should and instead tries to shoehorn far too much into a bar making it clunky.

Ikke dårlig, men alt for lang.

I was aware of I’ve T but didn’t listen to a lot of him back in the day. This album is legit. I get why he was so popular. Material is dates of course and therefore some of it is questionable but it was really good early 90’s rap

Mic Contact - Nice bassline. It's cool.

Hardcore yes

Hänellä on tosiaan tarina kerrottavana. Mistä sitä tullaan jne. Ihan kivasti vaihtelua silti biiseissä. Hyvä flow koko ajan.

Hahmo omaksuttu (itse)parodisuuteen saakka. Myös humoristisuuteen. Juttuja kuuntelee silloinkin, kun biitit tuntuvat hetkittäin monotonisilta. Ja vielä esim. Escape From the Killing Fields (raita 20) jaksaa viihdyttää myös musiikillisesti.

My impressions of this are probably a bit coloured by his subsequent descent into being a human meme, but it really screams "past his prime, lost his edge, and searching for a new gimmick" to me.

Fun listen. Pales in comparison to nwa and Dre's solo effort, the chronic, that would come soon after.

Bon mais bin trop long

Tu sais que t'as peut-être un problème de pacing quand la 22e toune sur ton album commence en disant "Just checkin' my microphone once". Ben trop long mais fun pareil. 3.4 étoiles.

the lyrics lack depth

Old school west coast rap is so listenable. Ice T was super progressive at the time. Bitches 2 is practically a feminist anthem (for the time). Legitimately though, he’s funny, topical, and the beats are strong.

And now he’s been on Law and Order for decades.

i don’t really like 90s rap overall. i’m not sure i can pinpoint why but it just doesn’t really do much for me. this was pretty damn good at times though!! it was also very long and i think overstayed its welcome. but Ice T also had some interesting and good things to say. if it was less than an hour i’d be comfortable giving it a 4 but i just got tired at around 45 minutes and still had 27 to go so we’re gonna go with a high 3. i think this album works better played over speakers and conversations rather than alone in airpods

It's good! I like the production and Ice-T holds it down. He's funny, ambitious, confident, and observant. I managed to stop thinking about Law & Order after the first couple of songs. My usual gripe with albums from this time: too long. Also, not the biggest offender of its genre, but the skits don't do it for me (aside from "First Impression", which I thought was actually funny). Relieved at the lack of overt misogyny. "Midnights" goes crazy--the sample work is great, building atmosphere while Ice-T tells the most intense story on the album. It's sweet of him to shout-out his favs on "M.V.P.s" :')

Pretty solid

im stoked to listen to this right after wutangs 36 chambers. I always thought Ice T had a great opportunity to develop a business around selling Iced Tea. off the hop its clear to me that Ice-T was of the time, and Wutang was ahead of it. rhyming style feels straightforward and storytelling oriented, like folk music. because of it the bars are less interesting to listen to passively. I really have to follow along with it to get the gag, which isnt my style of listening, and doesn't always have a payoff that rewards you for your attention. beats are pretty straight forward and lacking imagination. nothin too catchy for me here. i prefer more sampling, i think. Bitches 2 is a funny track. goofy lazy trumpet. TWO WEEKS AGO I WAS AT THE DISCO, TWO BROTHERS STEPPED...UP TO ...ME AND SAID, HEY..YO! THE REAL FUCKIN SHIT GOES DOOWWWWNN.... TAKE A LOOK AROOOOUND! ALL THE PUSSES CAN BE FOUND! I like what Ice T stands for more than I actually like his music. BODY COUNT is a great example of that, I love that he has a hardcore song in the middle of this album. Even if I don't particularly like the song (i don't)...but its fuckin cool that he goes for it. FUCK TIPPER GORE, BUSH, AND HIS CRIPPLED BITCH. I like it. I respect it...i dont love it. but i respect it. 3

nice old school hip hop just not a fan of T's vocals

Nice grooves and provoking lyrics. I actually enjoyed listening to this. The man's got a Sure fire system An economic prison 3.5 stars rounded down since the curse jar overfloweth.

Tough, trials of youth and circumstance, but not defeated or nihilistic. While simpler musically than Ye's, I find it much more listenable.

Not a big fan of the genre, but enjoyed this much more than the Kanye album.

Yeah pretty good

Very cool

One of my biggest issues with some albums is how they could have used some editing. This album is a great example of that. 24 songs, some of them with no rhymes. I think the actual songs in here are strong and the beats are sick but I don’t need a 2 minute song just saying the og gangster over and over.

Kinda funny that I got Ice Cube and Ice T pretty much right after each other. I liked them about equally, but in different ways. 3.5/5

Enjoyed it. Foul mouthed but fun

It's a fun album. Still not a fan of the skits between songs, but they're alright here. Favorite track: "New Jack Hustler"

I won't listen again but I honestly enjoyed it

There's a lot to like here. I don't tend to like gangsta rap but this was pretty enjoyable. I thought it was cool that he just sticks a Body Count song right in his rap album. The main drawback is that it's over long. There's a lot of good samples and backing stuff though. 3.49/5

ich hab nich ganz gehört aber ich ahne 3sterne angle

9ter Song ist crazy💀

Rap. Ice T, but still rap, man Despite my dislike of the genre, it's clear this is a better one.

Decent

T showing off why he was such a threat in the 90s.

Not a word I use often, but this was a lot more ‘groovy’ than I was expecting. Not bad.

Bro really gave us a mission statement in track 2 like he launching a startup 💀💀 Anyways, Body Count (happily!) surprised me. The riff goes hard. I looked up Body Count and turns out it *IS* a real rock band fronted by Ice-T. Huh! That's pretty neattt

OK, not one for me, but as an example of its genre deserves a 3

3.5 holds up over time for the most part.

Liked it better than expected, but still not really my thing.

This holds up much better than I expected compared to all the other early 90's rap on this list. This is a *slightly* different Ice T than the guy on SVU that John Mulaney pokes fun at. Anyway, it was probably pretty good, but also not really for me.

Growing up after Ice T had shifted away from music it is a little wild to hear some genuinely good work from his early career

Meh. Ice T is better in Law & Order SVU.

This album is very much of its time-somewhere between NWA and LL Cool J. I like this sound, even though I didn’t finish the album.

I was not expecting this to be so intimate and emotional. Not for me personally but really surprised me

He’s a good rapper the content is blunt and I feel Loses its edge by being so direct. Musically it feels pretty standard.

“Body Count” to “Escape…” are worth listening to and bring the rating up.

I'm no rap expert but I thought this was better than Notorious B.I.G. More listenable and I learned stuff about calling people "bitches" and what OG means. Not to mention who all the rap MVPs are. Enlightening. 3+ stars

I liked this one way more than I thought I would. 3.5*, but not rounding up as I doubt I'd come back and listen to it again. But it's much more enjoyable than the Notorious B.I.G. album I listened to earlier this week. Know what I'm sayin'?

3.5 actually surprised I enjoyed it. After listening to the garbage that was ice cube I thought this would be the same but it wasn’t. The music was actually interesting and love the anti establishment lyrics. Fav songs:Mind over Matter, new jack hustler, and body count

Before he was a Law & Order all-star the man made hard ass music and metal. He'll always be a god.

Ihan jepa räppiä, vähän enemmän rock tyylistä mutta senhän Ice T:stä tietää. Parhaat: New Jack Hustler, Lifestyle Of Rich And Infamous

Quite liked the introduction of Body Count. The rest was OK too.

Enjoyed it more than I thought I would, not my favourite genre. Some decent songs, thought it was a bit long

This is a good album. However, it is a little too long. Ice T has good flows and lyrics. The production sometimes leaves some to be desired, but I guess that’s what happens when you compare this to Dre and his other contemporaries. Also laws around sampling in the early 90’s are wild. How did everyone get rights to sample When The Levee Breaks like on Midnight? Highlights were New Jack Hustler, Bitches 2, O.G. Original Gangster, Midnight, and Body Count.

OG indeed!

Yes yes, not my bag but i gave it as much respect as everything else.

At times comically bad, but at times surprisingly good, Ice Tea is definitely the Original Gangster. He sounds like the old vet, boasting about how he’s got it. For the most part he does 6.8/10

I definitely like old school rap better but still not enough

Good album. Not great, has some really good songs but not enough to push it to a 4 for me. Not sure I’d listen again.

A fun listen. Not in the top tier of 90’s rap, but to me 90’s rap is like pizza - even mediocre pizza is still good.

The beats are real good for the age of this

This didn't slap in the same way a previous Ice T album did, but all the same I enjoyed it. I think it was a few songs too long and there was some filler in there we didn't need. But still! Good stuff.

This was okay, had some nice beats in it and generally a cool sounds, some of the lyrics felt pretty dodgy to me but overall it was a good album.

Was not expecting to like this at all but I stand corrected!

Not bad.

Another classic hip hop albums from the early 90s. Nice beats, okay flow, but it's nothing remarkable.

There are a lot of really powerful moments in here, but the whole message is diluted by some of the tracks that have not aged as gracefully.

Good Album and crazy to see in what direction the genre went. (3.5/5.0) It is really disappointing to see all the 1 Star ignorant straight Rap/Hip-Hop Haters while Rap-fans most of the time, at least on this platform don't straight up judge by genre. We don't need to act like every English rock band that nobody heard from on this list is solid. And the oversaturated 80s Sound on this list... But maybe im too young to understand the general hip hop hate lmaoooo

Pretty cool Mustve been insane in 91

I listened to this album on the way to work, stuck in traffic due to icy conditions. Normally, I’d be in no mood for music, but somehow O.G. Original Gangster cut through my foul mood. Maybe it’s because I grew up watching pro wrestling, but the swagger and over-the-top braggadocio on display made for a surprisingly enjoyable listen. I don’t know if I’d revisit it, but as a first-time experience, it was a pleasant surprise. Standout Track: As a metalhead, I should say Body Count, but I actually loved the spooky vibe and storytelling of Midnight. Score: 3/5 (a high 3)

Ice-T hard as fuck. Bodycount, bitch. But this shit is too long.

3.4 2x catchup 11/18

This is on the high side of 3. Perfectly listenable old school hip hop that doesn't really change my life.

The best bits reminded me of Public Enemy, the worst bits made me want to turn it off. Without the stupid dialogue intermezzos and other filler tracks this could have been a pretty decent album. Right now, three stars is the best I can do.

Overall I liked it. The beats are not better than most of the other rap of the time, but they are distinct. Like the punk/hard rock influence in the music. 3/5 Might listen again

Classic gangsta rap that holds up in terms of production and flow, if not lyrically

This is fine, overall average.

Good. But way too long.

Yeh not bad. Dads need hip hop too

ICE T is a good rapper, except now he's a cop!!!

some good stuff

joitain hyviä biisejä (mind over matter erityisesti), mut tyypillisen ysäri-rap-levyn tyyliin liian pitkä et jaksais kuunnella kokonaan putkeen. 2.5/5

I dont think id ever really heard Ice T rao, despite being familiar with his music. This album was good overall- he doesnt have as technicially proficient a rap style as some other rappers Ive heard in this list, but his sound and flow is solid. Where he really shines is his messaging and the thought he puts into his songs. He has an inisghtful view on the experiences of a black youth growing up in the ghetto and his issues with incarceration and racism. Overall- solid album. Id probably give it a 3.5/5 but not quite a 4

A lot of old school rap tends to be a little too repetitive and this is no exception. This is probably one of the best examples of it though. 3.5 stars

Some smart commentary on life in America that still seems as timely today as it was over 30 years ago.

I enjoyed a lot of this, but some of it falls pretty flat some 30 odd years later.

Starts off real hard, but runs out of steam in the second half.

It's well done and melodic. I am not the audience for this, not by time or place or gender or age, but these are passionate & skilled rhymes.

It's a 2.5, didn't love it and will probably not listen to anything on it again, but there's passion in it. It's too long for me listening but I like the variety & sprawling ambition for a rap album in 1991. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

A bit too long, but a real treat among other 90s hip hop on the list. A lightheartedness and sense of humour that makes Ice T stand out from his peers.

Decent, but a mixed bag overall. Some tracks are great, some tracks sound pretty dated and have not aged well. The interludes made me think of Mister Rogers.

Not my thing

Some good flow and and a couple standout tracks, but man this felt like it was never gonna end

Ice tea.. What's with these people man, lemonade, read the sign, lemonade. read it. ................... delicious

Dated. And yet for reasons even I haven’t been able to comprehend I actually was entertained by most of it. Body Count was an unexpected tangent that I definitely didn’t see coming back in the day. And who would have foreseen Ice-T being a mainstream television actor?

That risk song was a surprise. Not in a great way, but good for you Ice T. Crossing genres.

Yes really liked this a lot. Moved me to explore more og rap

extra star out of respect. could i write poetry to this? n

Even though it was considered extreme at the time, the violent lyrics seem almost cartoonish now. Especially considering Ice-T's later ironic and iconic turn as a detective on TV's "Law & Order." The album as a whole doesn't hold up musically or lyrically against contemporaries like Public Enemy or N.W.A.

Alright. but I prefer my hip-hop more lyrical.

Respect to Ice-T for pursuing his rock/metal hip-hop and acting dreams. Here's a kid from New Jersey that moves to LA at around 12 years old and makes a name for himself in music and more. That said, this OG record is too long and some of the songs have not aged well (mostly in the lyrics, but sometimes in the sound of the music itself). Not enough forward momentum or hooks — usually you can let go of one or the other but things are rough for listeners when you let both slip once you've established the genre you're working in. Combine that with some production choices that make this at times a sonically unpleasant album to hear definitely drags the final score down to a middling 3 despite a good effort on a number of tracks.

Undeniably an influential album for gangster rap but I wasn't too pleased by it. Although 80s and 90s rap is more up my alley than the modern garbage that's out today, this one wasn't exactly notable in terms of lyrical composition and rhythm. There were some points of the album where I was into the backing instrumentals.

I say this every time I get one of these classic rap albums, but old 80s/early90s rap sounds so dated and quaint, it's hard to take it seriously. The bottom line with this album is that it's better than I expected it to be, but it's WAY too long. No goddamned reason for this to be 24 songs and over an hour. A microcosm of the album is the song Body Count. Ice-T slipped in a hard rock song by his rock band on a rap album. That's creative, and interesting, and brave! The song is more than 5 minutes long - that's too long! I'll give it a 3. It is catchy, but man. Too long.

Some catchy beats on this. I like Ice-T's voice and how much variety there is on this album, but I can't listen to Gangsta rap without cringing at the lyrics

Not really my kind of hip-hop/rap, but it was alright.

endearing early 90s hip-hop with a surprising amount of progressive politics, lamentations of the street life, and skits that aren't terrible. a bit drawn out, but holds up surprisingly well. 3.5/5

Impossible to listen to when you have an explicit lyric filter on Spotify. Nothing but questions from a 9 year old. Questions you can’t answer. Still - inspirational rap. 3.4

I don't hate it - lots of emotion, mostly decent lyrics and some humour. Still too much "I'm so tough" for me to really get into

Albumi #32, 29.08.2024 Ysärin alun länsirannikon gangsteriräpin yksi klassikoista. Muutama laadukkaampi kappale, mutta ehkä hieman epätasainen levy.

I like the political messages + the honest moments in the album

3.4 - It was good, but I'm feeling like a lot of these 90's album sound the same but just different rappers on them

This used to be my favorite album as a teenager, but today I found it super annoying. His voice grated on my nerves.

This is prime 90’s rap. Ice T is elite. Would pay to see doc or Annette listening to this (the 9th song on the album in particular)

It was fine. I thought it felt a bit jokey.

Little long but had fun with this one! 3.5/5

This isn’t exactly my kind of music, but I understand the cultural significance of it. While I’ve knocked other albums for being well produced, the overall result was they had nothing to say. This album is well produced, and you can feel the message Ice-T is trying to give. There are times where it feels exaggerated and it’s likely fictional, and it often over glamorizes violence and disturbing things, but it feels like that was the point. The only way to cut through the noise was to be brash and hope that people heard you. I also enjoyed the Body Count song. If Body Count isn’t in this collection, I’ll have to make a note to listen to some on my own time.

First time listen. So hard. So different than what rap has become. "It was a bucket, but fuck it, it had to do" "He went out like a bitch..."

Ok immediate thoughts: that first song is stupid it sounds like a middle schooler went crazy on garage band but throw money at em. Also I mostly know ice t from the few episodes of law n order svu that I’ve seen. Overall album was not bad but don’t see myself revisiting any of the songs. 5/10

Midnight and body count were pretty cool. Otherwise pretty similar sound to Public Enemy, which means mid

Liked this, but there are others I like more.

I think this is a good album for the list and is a high water mark for this music at this time. Time has not been kind to the bitches and guns type of rap, but a listen confirms the beats are strong, the flow is smooth and the message is angry.

A quirky album for me. I have no issue at all with the language or subject matter (well, the misogyny was a bit painful), but I just don’t think Ice-T is a top tier rapper. To me, he sounds like he’s just reading his lyrics; his flow is weak compared to other emcee’s of the time. Except on “New Jack Hustler”; he nails that flow and I remember playing that cut to death when the movie came out. And while I can understand it could be hard for some to get beyond the outrageousness and language, Ice-T actually has a lot to say about his experience growing up in South Central L.A. One other highlight was the production from the album was top level… just wish I vibed with his rap style a bit more.

Quality.

Typical 90s hip hop/rap. Filler goes on too long. Decent spread tho, “hustler” the best of the lot. Although hearing Sabbath and Zep mixed on “Midnight” was quite good

Lots of cool stuff going on in the production. The vocals are a bit mediocre though.

Ice T? The SVU actor?

Exceeded expectations but I still don’t feel the pull to go back to it immediately.

Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.

Not my style, but pretty funny

I thought this album was kind of serious. Not bad

Just my cup of T 🫖

Will need to revisit. Only got through a couple songs

Pretty ironic he plays a cop now

Not for me but I recognize he said a lot very effectively.

3.5 stars. I feel like if the album started in the middle, and included some of the better songs of the latter half, it would have been a great album. "Rich and Infamous" is an entertaining and insightful song. "Body Count" is a really cool mesh of punk rock and rap. "Pulse of the Rhyme" is great. "New Jack Hustler" has a great beat. Even "Prepared to Die" is a really cool spoken word interstitial. There are other intriguing moments on the album, with vulgar images of brutality and Ice T's visceral disdain for haters and government agencies. However, at over an hour long, there are plenty of edits that could've been made. Some songs seem to drag on, especially with Ice T's simplistic flow and rhymes. Many bars aren't very impressive, and especially the more braggadocios songs come off as corny. Some really cool stuff on here, but not an album I want to keep spinning as a whole.

Du bon old school hip-hop du WC. Pas autant mémorable qu'un Dre ou un Snoop, mais ça reste dans les meilleurs albums de cette époque que j'ai eu. 7/10

Rating: 6.5/10 Good album overall. The production was great and a lot of Ice-T's rhymes, flow, and delivery were great as well. The lyrical content got repetitive/redundant after a while and many of the songs after the first third were not that interesting. Too many skits and this album is about 30 minutes too long, there is a really great album among all of the filler. Favorite songs: Home of the Bodybag, Mic Contract, Mind Over Matter, New Jack Hustler, Bitches 2, Straight Up Nigga, Pulse of the Rhyme. Worst songs: all of the skits.

A true OG, Ice T has made himself into an icon via hard work and smart decisions. Now he fills my Twitter feed with ice cold facts about life. Lots are things he preaches about here on this album. I think this might be our second album of his but I’m glad we’ve gotten a few.

This is pretty good. It's angry and full of bravado, and the songs are all decent. But I don't think I'll be revisiting much, as there are better albums in this genre.

OG rap has really similar beats and flows

всё слилось) надо либо немного дольше и тщательнее каждый трек слушать в изоляции либо писать лучше! это не сслп вам

This first track is a pretty weak way to kick things off holy cow. This is like a parody of gangsta rap. Lonely Island could've done this. Did they do this? It's so hard to square 80s/90s Ice-T with today Ice-T. He seemed impossibly hard when I was in my teens but this all seems so put on. Even though dude had a helluva life. I don't feel like represents much of it so much as it represents a good way to sell a lot of records at the time. Is it too much to ask for a new Ice-T record that just covers dudes life? Both of his parents died of heart attacks when he was super young and he rented an apartment off their Social Security and sold weed and stole car radios to make ends meet. And that's just one sliver of what happened to this dude. Anyway, I liked The Iceberg more than this.

I have an instinct to like Ice-T the mam, purely through his utter lack of filter and sense of fun on social media. I also like Body Count enough to own a couple of albums. This? It's pretty good. Woefully dated in places, but admirable insofar as so much of the production, writing and performing was helmed by the man himself. It needs more variety to sustain interest over an hour plus, but in short bursts, O.G. Original Gangster is bracing. Highlight is the track from the New Jack City movie!

That was dope

Some of the bars are really weak. I think overall there's some interesting samples and highs on this album, but there's better rap albums out there.

Very much of a specific time but highly listenable, with an authoritative and compelling flow. Tough as hell vibe with a hard rock sensibility that hits you like a hammer. "Body Count" is worth the cost of admission several times over. Fave Songs: Body Count, Mic Contract, Midnight, New Jack Hustler (Nino's Theme), Escape from the Killing Fields, The Tower

Not my thing but good to listen at this iconic artist and album. Raw!
