Trans Europe Express

I really wanted to like this - the idea of a group of German oddball electronica pioneers doing an album celebrating a railway service is just ace. Evidently a hugely influential album, but had no fun listening to it at all. Prime cut: Showroom Dummies

So this album has 2 reviews from me. Listened in the morning and didn't really know what to think. Can't say I enjoyed, nor disliked. Definitely different. Liked Hall of mirrors and thought, not for me. Then, on my back porch after a few beers and a few hits of weed, I was listening to music, enjoying the wild life and I went back to this album. With a good, relaxing buzz, this was a decent album. Original rating 1 Follow up 2 to 2.5 May trip on shrooms Saturday and give it another listen. Haha.

If I hear the phrase “Showroom Dummies” or “Trans-Europe Express” again I’m going to lose my mind. Most songs are just the same phrase repeated over and over. Early electronica is pretty important and was influential in a lot of mainstream artists as well as development of synths in the 80’s but the album feels so mechanical and dull. 2/5

I just thought this was funny. It made me laugh because of how german it sounded but in no way did I think it was influential.

Honestly it's kind of hilarious; I feel like it's almost a self-parody. "The Hall of Mirrors" really? .... "even the greatest stars....dislike themselves in the looking glahhhss...." LOL. I actually don't hate it - it's just... and i hate using this lazy word but ... BORING. I can't see ever putting this on voluntarily other than when my German former college roommate visits for a laugh. Minimalist electronica - kinda cool at times, but extremely repetitive and too tiring for any active listening. 3/10 2 stars.

Trans Europe Express is quirky and would've been well original back when it came out but it's not really for me, it's all a little bit too low key, I want in your face loud bombastic electronica. A high 2/5.

A little repetitive industrial for my taste. Still enjoyable, but in small doses. Full album was a hard listen and I found myself being annoyed at parts.

One of those albums that set the stage for future artists in multiple genres. An electronic album that showed what was possible with the technology at the time and proved that you could be experimental and successful. Hall of Mirrors sticks out as being incredibly ominous and unsettling but in a good way. Otherwise electronic music is not my forte and I don't see myself coming back to this album.

I guess you could see this was influential, since Daft Punk and a hundred other clones straight up copied them, but that doesn't make this good. Best track: Franz Schubert

I can see how that would be groundbreaking electronic music in 1977 that would influence a lot of people to come. Not something I’d ever listen to again though.

I can appreciate the cold, electronic minimalism of this album’s style but I found the repetition of some of these songs grating. I like a nice long song but I need some variation or tension or drama to justify an 8 or 9-minute song length. “The Hall of Mirrors” might work for me if it was half as long. “Showroom Dummies” is a highlight. I like the dystopian imagery of people mindlessly going about their routines. It matches the severity of the music unlike the title track, which is just about catching a train? Haha the tone doesn’t match the lyrics for me. Like, lighten up, dudes. It’s just a train. Cool to hear an album that has recurring motifs but there’s not enough variation for me that I’m happy to hear the main theme come back. It just makes the long songs feel even longer. I can imagine this being an influential band / album for a lot of artists. I can definitely hear Daft Punk drawing influence from them. The other album I hear in this is Kanye’s “808s & Heartbreak.” This album had to have been on the mood board when he produced that album. The mostly instrumental “Franz Schubert” is another highlight. Really beautiful.

Looking at the year of release, this must have been SUPER ahead of its time in the electronic world, and probably disturbed a lot of people (in the best way). I enjoyed listening, and I know that the genre itself tends to be repetitive, and trains have that chug-a-chug-a feel... but I think it was pushing the limits of an intense space train trance and moving into nauseating-spinning-ride-that-won't-stop territory.

I lost my writeup (second time this week!) due to a computer overnight restart and the website not saving my text so this will be short. I liked it, I think the big thing with them is that they were THE pioneers of electronic music. What is cool about this album is that it's actually listenable and easy to enjoy though. I think sometimes pioneers of genres are good at making something new but are not always the best at refining the sound, but to me this album sounds breaks that stereotype and gives us music that is not ONLY experimental or new. The only downside is that it's pretty minimalistic and can get repetitive.

I like the ideas and concept of this album. However, I don't really like the sounds or the way they went about achieving those ideas. The synths/electronic part of it sounded really great for the most part, but the rest of it (the voices, samples, etc.) did not agree with me. Favorite track: Europe Endless

Is this what it’s like to live in an 80s video game?

I am a fan of Trance and Techno and even I couldn’t follow this one. Maybe it was cause I was high, but I would argue that if anything it would have had a positive affect. Instead I it felt like I was at a weird NY one man show listening to an artistic interpretation of how someone was on a train.

J'ai évidemment comme vous tous profité de cet album pour régler les périphériques audio de mon ordinateur ASUS. Pour ce faire, j'ai appuyé sur le bouton Windows, suis allé dans Paramètres, ai cliqué sur Son, puis sur le menu déroulant et ai sélectionné mes écouteurs. J'ai ensuite testé le son: « Un, deux, un deux… » Une fois ceci effectué, j'ai téléchargé plusieurs "drivers" via l'onglet Mise à jour et sécurité puis ai redémarré mon ordinateur.

Weird electro shit. I wasn't amused when I saw it opened with 4 songs over half an hour and I couldn't see how I'd make it through, but somehow I did. This gets 2 stars from me. Monotoned to say the least.

Most interesting thing to me is how this influenced the likes of OMD, Soft Cell, Depeche Mode and so on. It's advanced synth work for 1977 but the sparse arrangements make for hard listening.

The first track sounds like something that would be in the soundtrack for an indie pixel art game but after that the repetitive basic electronic music got annoying

The Hall of Mirrors tiene sonidos muy interesantes y dado que el disco es de 1977 seguramente lograr todas las piezas de esta obra no fue tarea sencilla. Parece un disco muy experimental y claro que es un referente en la música electrónica. El género no es de mi agrado y sí necesito forzarme a escucharlo. 2.5 estrellas que dejo en 2 porque no lo disfruté realmente.

No es lo mío. Quizá en su momento tuvo su mucho mérito por innovar con las cajas de ritmos y sintetizadores, pero en verdad no lo siento. Mucha repetición en todos los niveles y sin llegar a verdaderos clímax más allá de el acorde que va armándose: tan TAN TAAAAN TAAAAAAAAAAAAN.

This style of music I just bounce off. I know Kraftwerk is influential and all, but I just can't get into it.

Not too enjoyable, kind of for the same reasons the Royksopp record didn't work for me. Just nothing that I really connected with, and on top of that I found it quite repetitive. Didn't even finish this one honestly.

Pioneering it may have been but it doesn't really stand up today. Repetition underpins this type of music and it comes down to length and the motifs. In both case this album fails.

So supposedly this is seminal and really important but have to say I did struggle. Back in the day this blew minds, but I found it jarring a lot of the time. One or two were OK but PURELY rating on my enjoyment (rather than historical appreciation).... *2 STARS*

Odd. A weird, kind of magical journey. I can't quite decipher this album, but it does start to leave an impression. Unfortunately, that impression gets soured the longer the album goes on, and the longer the repetitive sections go on.

Minimalistic electronic from Germany. Sounds like a Pokemon theme track. Metal on Metal sounds like i'm on a train. Alright they gotta stop repeating trans europe express its enough (it went on for 3 songs).

Me es difícil calificarlos. Por un lado me encanta su estética, su estilo y lo que deben haber representado en su época (este disco es de los 70s!) Por otra parte, algunos temas son difíciles de escuchar (a mi gusto): The Hall of Mirrors me pareció pesado. Por otra parte, Europe Endless, Showroom Dummies y Trans-Europe Express me caen simpáticos. Reitero, estos tipos me habrían VOLADO la cabeza si hubiese nacido unas décadas atrás. Pero nací en el 85 así que llego tarde a esto. Si tengo que calificarlos por lo que contribuyeron a la música, seguramente tenga que ponerles un 4 o 5. Pero yo califico según mi gusto o no, y va un 2. Lo siento señores.

Pretty repetitive, but cool synth. Not much lyric action.

The only thing I ever heard is I think Autobahn. I understand the importance of Kraftwerk in the development of electronic music, but that is not my cup of tea. Cold repetitive sounds with some sparse lyrics en no emotions. Music for robots and I am not... The daily album playlist provided the english version and only after reading some other reviews I realized there is also a German version. "wir sind schaufensterpuppen" whatever.... I always select one track per album to add to my 1001album playlist but I have no clue what to add, maybe just the most short one.... 1 or 2 stars...

I'd categorise this as suffering the same fate as Commodore 64 Music - if you grew up with it, you'll defend it endlessly, but low chance of trying to engage someone (like me) who doesnt have the nostalgic value to work with.

Im sure it was important when it came out, but to me this is a great example of why not all art needs to survive. Just let this rudimentary work die and blossom into all the electro stuff that came afterwards. It’s like why I don’t listen to the Big Booper when I can listen to Zeppelin.

So many albums before I got one by Kraftwerk...now it feels like every other album is by them. The 70s musical robot voice ranks behind Frampton, Daft Punk and Roger Troutman. I bet Vangelis loves these guys. Of course they had a collaborative album in the late 80s. There are not words for how dumb this music is. The length of the songs basically goes down as the album goes on which is good when you realize you still have 6 songs to go off an 8 song album. It's Planet Rock! I hate that song too. Name drop some famous people, that's a neat trick. Metal on Metal is Trent Reznor's favorite song, dark, synthesizers, metal on metal noises. Abzug brings the Planet Rock melody from the title track back. I bet Madonna was listening to this song exclusively when she did the song Music. This album uses the phrase "Trans-Europe Express" too many times. It makes PM Dawn's Paper Dolls seem like an exercise in restraint by comparison. This was better than The Man Machine.

Someone learned how a looper works and they shouldn't be trusted with technology. Repetition can be artistic to a point...this one pushed past it into laziness. Yes, I get it, train rides are long and repetitive. They have a rhythm to it. That doesn't make this music genius.

Didn't like

This was an album where I had to be conscious of the release year, because otherwise I wouldn't get it at all. I'm sure this sounded amazing (or at least very distinctive) in 1977, but to me, it sounds remedial. Or maybe I just don't get minimalism. Kraftwerk formed the basis for a lot of music that I like, but it's antecedents have make the music on this particular album sound like a historical artifact. And we're talking 1977, not 1927. I wasn't expecting to give this my second 1-star rating out of this exercise, but that's where I'm at after listening to it. It's not painful, but it doesn't spark any emotion whatsoever for me.

Are these lovely compositions? Yes. Do I want to listen to this again? No, NEVER. Tedious, overly long, boring ass songs about trains. I will say they seque into songs quite well, which is admirable, especially in that style of music. But I HATED this & couldn't wait for it to be over. I did like the Schubert song & Metal on Metal. I've never heard Kraftwerk before. While I recognize how influential this and Kraftwerk must have been in 1977 I really hated this album. If I have to hear "Trans. Europe. Express." one more time I might lose it. I found the whole thing so obnoxiously repetitive. If it weren't so repetitive, I think I might actually like it. I respect them as pioneers but I'll stick to more modern electronic music where it's enjoyable even when highly repetitive.

Trans Europe Express is the only track considerable as a “song”. The rest is keyboard demo material.

I had dreams of this being a beautiful album, but upon an unfortunate series of events saw those dreams dashed and divided like a million stars in the night sky. that I wished on over and over again- sparkling and broken. But I really didn’t mind because I knew that it takes getting everything you ever wanted and then losing it to know what true freedom is. When the people I used to know found out what I had been doing, how I had been living- they asked me why. But there’s no use in talking to people who have a home, they have no idea what its like to seek safety in other people, for home to be wherever you lied you head. I was always an unusual girl, my mother told me that I had a chameleon soul. No moral compass pointing me due north, no fixed personality. Just an inner indecisiviness that was as wide as wavering as the ocean. And if I said that I didn’t plan for it to turn out this way I’d be lying- because I was born to be the other woman. I belonged to no one- who belonged to everyone, who had nothing- who wanted everything with a fire for every experience and an obssesion for freedom that terrified me to the point that I couldn’t even talk about- and pushed me to a nomadic point of madness that both dazzled and dizzied me. Every night I used to pray that I’d find my people- and finally I did- on the open road. We have nothing to lose, nothing to gain, nothing we desired anymore- except to make our lives into a work of art. LIVE FAST. DIE YOUNG. BE WILD. AND HAVE FUN. I believe in the country America used to be. I belive in the person I want to become, I believe in the freedom of the open road. And my motto is the same as ever- “I believe in the kindness of strangers. And when I’m at war with myself- I Ride. I Just Ride.” Who are you? Are you in touch with all your darkest fantasies? Two days in a row with trans in the title?? It truly is pride month. Hell yeah. On a down note, I believe this is going to be extended techno for like an hour and NOT a train themed romp through the triumph and tragedy that was the 2019 Kraft Dinner Twerkathon in Waterloo. Loonies were spilled, backs were thrown out, and the cheese dust is still being vacuumed out of that church basement to this day. Instead it’s probably just German electro music. Oh well. Surprise me. Please. Europe Endless - The first song is just shy of ten minutes. Oh joy, oh bliss. I don’t know what to tell you here. This is a monotonous video game soundtrack from 1980. Three years ahead of your time. Congrats. Don’t forget! There’s also a guy saying “Europe Endless” over the top of it. That’s good. Pause. Settings. Audio. Soundtrack volume. 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 OFF. Ahhhh that’s better. Now I can enjoy this space motorcycle racing game from 1983. The Hall of Mirrors - Oh my god I forgot I was listening to this. Uhhh. This is actually way cooler. Dark, weird, and all around more intriguing. Verrrry German. Of course the one two minute idea is stretched over 8 (Europe) endless minutes, but that feels like par for the course here. Showroom Dummies - Uh yeah I’m in the market for an upsetting puppet? Something I can easily conceal at the border, but with a face that says “I will kill you if you don’t eat vegetables.” I have a school tour starting tomorrow. Oh my word this song is terrible. The repetition is nauseating. Trans-Europe Express - Whoa some French. This really is about going across Europe. I doubt we’re going to get Latvian in here, but this was during the Cold War. Did the sides even acknowledge eachother? I don’t care. This is another bad song repeated ad nauseum. Or “ad museum” as my lovely autocorrect believes I meant to write. Metal on Metal - Yeah this is what I would want from an album like this. Literally as industrial as it gets. Deep, ominous, and thankfully just over two minutes. Abzug - We are so back. Back where this musical voyage so often leaves me, in the doldrums of misery. Why is this the same song again. We loved Trans-Europe Express that much? Apparently this translates to “Deduction” in English. I will make a deduction right now. This music is overrated. Franz Schubert - I am so happy to be out of that loop that this is the greatest song I’ve ever heard. 10 stars. No, of course this also one 10 note lick played on repeat. It’s actually more than likely looped. Played once and then repeated. Endless Endless - You’re telling me! Yeah the transition was kind of cool, but this again the same bad “riff” from the last song with some vocals. Well it wasn’t as long as Daft Punk but my god I feel irritated. Strangely itchy. I’m sorry, but this is worthless. I’m sure at the time, if you were a North American kid used to warm radio rock, this would’ve hit like an arctic blast from the eastern bloc, but come on. This isn’t worth sitting and listening to. This isn’t for dancing, this isn’t for listening intently. Is it supposed to induce a trance? No it’s too annoying for that. I am baffled. If you’re a fan of this, I’m sure you’ll say it’s “beyond me” but I beg you to reconsider that take. If this provided some variety, it would probably be a really nice piece of art, but as it stands, Trans Europe Express is about 7 minutes of chilly, post Industrial Revolution, pre Industrial (music) Revolution stretched out interminably. For future reference, avoid the Guantanamo cut. 0.5 HIGHLIGHTS - Metal on Metal

I tried to find something positive about this album. Honest I did. But the repetitive vocals drove me so insane I don’t remember anything else about this music except how much I now hate looking glasses.

I started off not thrilled at the idea of listening to Kraftwerk because I don’t generally like electronica. I was pleasantly surprised by the first track, Europe Endless. It was highly listenable and really raised my hopes. Then the next two songs ripped that away with boring nonsense

i honestly couldn’t finish this. so boring and repetitive. each song is long too

This is the album equivalent of DNF on my Goodreads book list. I got through the first two tracks and then skimmed the rest trying to find something interesting. Its OK... just so repetitive and dull. I don't understand how this is different than AI generated electronic audio, except that it is actually far worse. It is fair to say I just don't \"get\" Kraftwerk and maybe that's on me. So be it.

No melodies, the most robotic and repetitive rhythms with no feel or emotion whatsoever. Seems like something a robot civilisation would play as they invade Earth.

I guess there is some talent here but I think it sounds like a pinball machine.

It's creative and unique but it's repetitive and not enjoyable. At one point three songs had gone by and I thought I had been on the same song the whole time because he was still just chanting "Trans-Europe Express". The title of the final track is apt because that's what this album felt like. I understand this was influential on stuff like Depeche Mode and Daft Punk, but those bands are actually fun to listen to.

I think i'm starting to hate electronica soo much. I mean, this album is supposed to be iconic because is maybe one of the first albums that was release of the genre but this honestly sounds like an arcade game music, every single song is needlessly long, cause is the same thing over and over for 6 to 9 minutes each song, like GOD PLEASE STOP, i understood the idea the first 3 minutes of your song.

If you like slow electronic music with one repeated line of spoken work, this is the album for you!

Not sure if they were trying to invent EDM, or create a new soundtrack for Centipede, but Daft Punk probably loved these guys. Me however, not my kind of electronic sound.

WHAT A BORING ALBUM

Not conjecture, this might be the most boring album I've ever sat through. So repetitive and unexciting it gave me anxiety sitting here and hearing the same beep boop Trans Europe Express robot dick slaps over and over for 8 minutes at a time. I kno this album is considered one of the top influential albums of all time and yada yada, but this was miserable

This is pretty much how I feel about that awful Public Image Ltd. on here, (to a lesser extent) -- While I appreciate the pioneers of genres and how influential Kraftwerk was, it's another example of how just because you're early at something new doesn't automatically mean it's a good listen. Despite the groundbreaking stuff they did, I found this to be just so repetitive and dull.

The electronic music on this album is an obvious precursor to the synth pop of the 1980s; however, I’m a much bigger fan of the latter. The first few tracks weren’t bad, but starting with “Trans-Europe Express,” the tracks became a bit relentless - like an annoying buzzing in my ear with a driving beat and unpleasant chords. Overall I didn’t find this album particularly pleasant to listen to.

Not my style at all

I feel like I’m listening to the iPhone alarm and ringtone greatest hits. Even the people who were inspired by this must have realized this shit sucks but concluded they could make music with these sounds. No amount of Molly could make me enjoy this early-EDM robot sound orgy.

ANOTHER ONE!!?!?! I don't think this was necessarily better or worse than the last one, which I gave a two. But this deserves a one. Hopefully they'll look at the low scores and put no kraftwerk on "1001 more albums..."

Pretty dull honestly. Nothing exciting at all. If you want extremely mellow techno beats with little to no variation, this is for you. Otherwise, pass.

This was god awful. Beyond awful. Beep boop and repeat the same line over and over for 6-8 minutes. So happy when it was over.

Not gonna lie - a lot of this music sounds like the old light parade music at Disney World. There is nothing egregiously bad here. It's just not my cup of tea. I found myself really hoping the album would be done.

Why, dear God, WHY are there SO MANY KRAFTWERK ALBUMS on this list?! "Trans Europe Express" is easily one of the most repetitive and boring albums I've ever had the displeasure of listening to. The whole album is an endless loop of arpeggiated synths over boring beats periodically broken up by repetitive vocals. The title track is essentially 6 and a half minutes of phase-filtered synthetic drums, people chanting "Trans-Europe Express" and an out-of-context mention of David Bowie. It's mind-boggling to me that this is considered by anyone to be worthy of inclusion on the list. The listening experience was utterly angering.

Endless Endless is accurate

2nd time I've tried them. Recognize some samples but overall repetitive and depressing and almost lampoonish.

Very disappointing, everything on it is slow and simplistic, homogenous, boring record. Almost gave it two stars because I started liking a song toward the end of the record and then it just ended. Lame.
