Reviews (page 5 of 13)
Stereo sound is frustrating bc I rarely use both earbuds. But I love Queen and their theatrical-ness.
Nice hearing the songs from Queen that weren't the big hits which have been horribly overplayed
March of the black queen / Fairy fellers / Ogre battle sont incrrrrrrr
J'ai hésité à mettre 5 parce que le début est pas assez bien mais après palala
One of the best early Queen records
The day has finally come for my third and final Queen album to review. I gave four stars to A Night At The Opera, but two stars to Sheer Heart Attack, so I think anything is possible on this album. I used to listen to Queen's greatest hits quite a bit back when I was in college, so I'm shocked that I haven't fallen in love with any of their studio albums on this list yet, but maybe Queen II will be more my jam! First things first: whoever mixed this album did a terrible job and I hope their poor performance haunts them to this day. This album could have been much better if the damn guitars hadn't been so muted. Despite that though, I thought Queen II was really good. Side Black of the album (the second side) was much better than the first in my opinion, and I enjoyed how it felt like one longer movement, moving from song to song with some pretty brilliant segues. The energy on Side Black was great too, and I loved the medieval fantasy themes that permeated the songs. They were a touch goofy, but they were really fun and it allowed Queen to show off their unique merging of glam and hard rock. “Seven Seas of Rhye” is the only song on this album that I was familiar with, and I thought it was a perfect closing track. I love that piano melody, and the drumming is fantastic too. The first side of the album was a touch boring, but I did like the use of acoustic guitars on “Some Day One Day” and “The Loser in the End.” I really liked how “Some Day One Day,” utilized not only acoustic guitar, but that ‘semi-screeching’ sound that Brian May’s known for on the electric guitar. As far as the album as a whole is concerned, the over-dubbing and harmonies were great, and I thought the band used them really well, crafting their own unique sound. This album is probably closer to a 3.5 for me, but I’m rounding up to a 4. It could have been solidly a 4 if the mixing was better, but take that with a grain of salt I suppose. After all, I’m sitting at a computer, and not in a recording studio.
I know “The Loser In The End” is controversial because it interrupts the black/white May/Mercury concept but I love it. This one would get a 4.5 from me if I could. It’s not absolutely perfect but it nearly gets there, and it’s super fun to listen to knowing where their journey took them after this
Queen had not reached their heights by this point, yet Queen II shows what they would one day be capable of. Since Freddie still had not found his sound, a lot of II sounds more like Styx than Queen, though an additional year in the studio would result in Freddie and Co. finding their classic theatrical flair.
Really liked the harder side of Queen on display on this album. Would definitely return to this album for further listening. Standout tracks: Father To Son, White Queen (As It Began)
Of all the Queen that I've heard I can honestly say I don't usually listen to this album, but it is a very good album! Classic cover haha but it's not the best of their albums but it is queen and any queen is better than no queen! Solid album!
I was fully expecting for a very popular hit to come on this album but was very surprised that this doesn't contain any of their commercial top hits. Great listen overall even without a huge single on this album. I'd rate this a +3, maybe a weak 4.
Actually enjoy this more than Night at the Opera, despite the “lack” of hits (perhaps this was only the case in the US). Love the sound of this album.
Rather enjoyed this. Only knew y one song before but it was more proggy than their popular stuff.
Really enjoyed this. Queen are great. Still a bit rough here, hadn't gone their song writing yet.
Beans are not the ONLY musical fruit...
Nerds!
Way more rock heavy than I expected
Queen has one of the most easily recognizable sounds to me, but this album shows how their music developed over time, with less of the theatrics they're known for (but still some, especially towards the end). All in all a really solid album, though it's not quite as exciting as the stuff Queen is known for.
Quiet good.
8/10 Who would've thought Queen could sound so much like Led Zeppelin? Not that I'm doubting Queen's rock credentials, but during 'The Loser In The End' Freddie Mercury's voice sounded so much like Robert Plant that I had to pull out my phone to check I was still listening to the right band. Loads of fun songs on here and just enough glam to keep that core Queen identity. Can't imagine that this will be on regular rotation for me but will be a fun listen whenever I do come back to it. Listens: 1
liked songs: Father to Son, The Loser In The End, The March Of The Black Queen Very good. I like this era of Queen a lot. 4
It's Queen. Magnificent guitar magnificent drums magnificent vocals magnificent songwriting.
Day 33 - A new listen for me - this one was fun!! 4/5 #musicsky #albumsky
Never really listened to this one. I've more listened to Queen's greatest hits. But I ended up really enjoying this.
Rough, I like when Queen were rough
This is a sleeper Queen album that doesn't have a hit and I have not heard any song from. Even so, it's pretty damn good still. Side I is a bit slowed down and more hard rock than what I'm used to from the group. Side II is more of the theatrics that Queen is known for. "Loser in the End" is my top track with such a Zep sound I almost thought is was them. I am getting more into Queen the more I listen. QII is another fun one with Freddie and May bringing their distinct sounds and continuing to show their unique abilities...3.63.
I didn't recognize a single song off of Queen II other than Seven Seas of Rye and I was still impressed. The first half (Side White) was unexpectedly heavy and doesn't carry much of the musical flair that I expect from Queen, however it was still enjoyable. They get a bit closer to their signature sound on Side Black which remains solid all the way through. I've always known the hits but Queen once again proves that their albums offer something different and deserve to be on the list. 3.57 stars
Amazing to hear how they started
All the hallmarks of the queen sound are present and correct, albeit in an earlier prototype. It's a well crafted prog rock album with plenty of pomp, drama and flair you expect to love/hate from this genre.
Classic rock. Such a weird (nice) mix of rock, quintessential British references, paganism and melodrama. It is odd that the album cover is Bohemian Rhapsody style, but that that's not here.
Can't really say much about this album. Fun, engaging songs structures, interesting guitar work with some epic moments, good vocals. Great album, but nothing impressive—I just love hard rock.
well
March of the black queen was the best song I had somehow not heard yet! Love Queen but this album is full of low key good songs that just don’t seem to be quite as popular for whatever reason
First time ever listening to this album. I'm not too familiar with them other than their hits, but I really enjoyed this.
Bardzo dobre. Nie żeby coś do zapisania, ale ogółem cała płyta równa i spójna. Fajne to.
Much better than I had expected. An album I now see as being underrated, seemingly by most people as well as me. While it lack the audacity and flamboyance of some of their subsequent work, it contains some great prog stuff and surprisingly heavy guitar work at times. A genuine surprise; a pleasant one.
It's hilarious how side one is generally a decent British band and side two is just Freddie Mercury (trademark). I wonder how different the band would have ended up if they went with the first sides sound. Good album but they clearly had growth.
I don’t think I had heard any of these songs before, but I do like Queen. 3.5 Stars
Feel almost ashamed to be getting into Queen this late, but certainly not let down by what I'm hearing. Very nice!
Not my favorite, but it's still Queen. 3.5 stars.
Wow ... This Queen album is uhhh ... not Queen-like You still have the tight harmonies and strong lead vocals, and it isn't bad ... it just isn't the Power Rock ballads that we all know and love Like ... I don't feel running outside and punching somebody in the face right now and I don't know how to process that
I enjoyed it! Surprised I don’t remember any of these songs in particular but they were all good!
Seven seas carry this one, but the other tunes are classic Queen and always a joy to listen to.
So, so, so much better than the other 1970s albums in this list so far.
Solid!
YAAAS QUEEN
Pretty good, never listened to this one before. Seven Seas of Rhye is a great song.
They are so dang talented. I like White Queen. Some day one day surprised me.
It's Queen, but not peak Queen. When you listen to Queen the only group you can rate them against is themselves.
Fantasy themes + electric guitars = awesome, just about every time. This isn't an album that I absolutely love, but I will definitely listen to at least the 2nd half of it often. Favorite track: "The March of the Black Queen"
très rock haha
It's cool
I never thought to listen to a full Queen album because I didn't want to undermine the magic of the hits I know with some filler tracks. But hey, this album is very good, of course. Rock opera to the max.
Pretty good album! Love Freddie's vocals and that unique sound that belongs to Queen
legendary
This albums rocks.
This is an interesting early Queen album. You can see glimpses of the heights they will reach, but they aren’t quite there yet. It’s a fun rock album.
Surprised I hadn’t previously heard a single song from this album. The production is outstanding.
A really solid album. For how popular Queen is, I was very surprised at how few tracks I knew on this album. Pretty standard Queen, all very good and entertaining. Some of the more fantastical songs lost me a bit but nothing bad to say. Top tracks: Father To Son, The March Of The Black Queen, Deven Seas Of Rhye
Queen II is not my favorite Queen album but it's better than their first and it got some nice prog rock influences. It's also heavier than the most commonly known songs. Sheer Heart Attack which follows this one mostly departs from this sound. It's a good Queen album but not their greatest. I listen to it from time to time.
BEST SONGS: - White Queen -The Loser In The End - The Fairy Feller's Master - Nevermore
In getting strong rock opera vibe from this one and it keeps getting better the further on it goes. Then, at the end, there is an actual banga time in Seven Seas of Rhye that in a way crowns the album. Reminds me a lot of the Flash Gordon soundtrack they did later on because that one isn't a "singles" album either
Yeah plain and simple, Queen cooked with this one. I like that I didn’t know a single song here but could feel the reverberation of influence up to current prog music. The jacked up guitars and vocal harmonies were sick and I loved the heavy staccato riffing that’s all over this thing. Rating: 4.5
Early, proggy Queen is not my favorite, but there are still some rockers on this album! Seven Seas of Rhye has always been an underrated jam! They really took off on the Sheer Heart Attack, IMO.
queen album. it good i fw it wow its good what a surprise, wait queen makes good music i didn;t know that wtf wow this is so crazy wowowowowow they haven't missed imo
Proggy Queen is my prefered Queen. 4 stars
I might not love every song on this album, but I adore how forward the bass is mixed as well as the exciting energy of the rock ballad style here. I've discovered a handful of really good songs here I've never heard and ending on seven seas of rhye just makes it better. This is a solid four out of five.
Favourite Song: The March Of The Black Queen
88% Best: Father to Son; White Queen (As It Began); Ogre Battle; The March of the Black Queen Must-Hear? Sure
More Queen. I liked it more than the album that had Bohemian Rhapsody.
great rock album, nevermore is a gem
I don’t think I had heard any of these songs before, but I do like Queen. 3.5 Stars
Apart from the hit single "Seven Seas of Rhye", a largely forgetable album, but portents of what was to come.
Undeniably fantastic
Can't argue with Queen
Heavy and sonically interesting. Well mixed.
Great rock album
solid drama rock, but not their best
bangerrrrr
My Favorite so far. Really loved the Creative Songs, i didn‘t know Queen made Progressive Rock. Some really catchy Songs on there.
queening out or smthing

Amazing but not as catchy as their other albums
It’s Queen so yeah.
Listened Before? N Wow, what a ride! One thing this list is doing above all else is introducing me to some classic rock that I would never have found time to pick up on my own. This one would have been one that would have slipped through the cracks for sure. Unpopular on release (with critics), and regarded as one of Queen's best today, I would say I fall somewhere in the middle here. The vocals and instrumentation are top-notch but sometimes the whole thing feels a little over the top production-wise. Still a very solid album. I really loved the finale suite from Black Queen to the end. I'm going to re-listen and see if it becomes one of my favorites. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: The March Of The Black Queen
I'm picturing a post-Tommy The Who marching across Mordor, triumphant with banners aloft, legions in their wake when there is a wisp of white smoke over a golden hill and Queen gallop in like the four horsemen of rock opera and cut through Townsend's flank like it's warm butter. Sure, the Who will win the war, but for a moment, this one unit had them by the throat. "Is that a sitar *and* a vocoder?" Cmdr. Townsend gasped as Freddie's Daltrey impression on "The Loser in the End" stole the actual Daltrey's girl even though he didn't really want her. Brian May is in full wizard frenzy, lightning bolts and whirlwinds. No one knows the names of the other two, heroes anonymously mourned by rhythm sections for time immortal.
Queen is too corny for me. But this album is just so earnestly committed to the bit, and the execution so flawless (that Freddie Mercury could sing ok) that I feel compelled to offer a begrudging 4.
Disclaimer: I was a giant Queen fan as a kid. If I had to pick the Queen albums to be on the 1001 list, not sure II would have been one of them. But am glad to give a Queen album a spin. You do hear all the parts of "future queen" on this one...the multi-tracked voices, the ambitious range of genres and, of course, the pomposity of it all. This album is also quite a bit heavier than I remember. And I will never tire of Brian's guitar tone. (PS, if you are a Queen fan, Brian just remastered Queen I and it sounds pretty amazing...)
YAYIE
Never heard this album and it was not what I was expecting. Less theatrical lyrics and a chiller vibe with the great guitar solos. Good album
крутой альбом, нечего сказать
Easy listening, but easy to lose focus on as it all has a very similar vibe. Queen has done some much better stuff, but on the whole it's a good listen. You can definitely tell that with this album they are really starting to find their sound but they aren't quite branching out to the crazy places they go to in future albums (cough bohemian rhapsody).
very well made, am not really into rock but notice some of the influence this album had on rock as a genre.
Each song feels like it's telling a complete story, so so interesting. Not sure I like rock in general, but this narrative style is honestly my favorite version. Incredibly interesting, at least. I'm loving the way elements move together, always in support of a truly incredible vocal from Freddie Mercury. "Father to Son" - cool! I love the harmonies on the vocal. Really liking the song writing, compared to the Led Zepplin album. OK JUST GOT FURTHER THROUGH THE SONG I LOVE IT. So epic. "Ogre Battle" - epic. intense. maybe too much for me. Honestly I got kinda lost in the song list, but really enjoyed just how theatrical this album is.
Favorite Track: Father to Son
enjoyed the album throughout, but enjoyed the second half much more great transitions loved procession, white queen, nevermore, march of the black queen and seven seas of rhye
energetic and unique lyrics with beautiful Freddie's voice, i like it I'll rate it light 8
Surprising. Definitely more prog and “weirder” influenced than I knew Queen could get. None of the lyrics really caught me though, I’m glad they kind of went in a more accessible direction down the line.
Solid album but without a lot of standout tracks. I enjoyed the listen and would listen again.
Enjoyable Can't beat a bit of Freddie
I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did. Don't get me wrong, I like the Queen stuff I have heard, but I don't think I had ever listened to an actual Queen album before that wasn't a "greatest hits" compilation.
Por mais que o disco não conte com os principais hits da banda, a força e a potência está ali! Um verdadeiro clássico!
Pretty fire. Any queen song is good
I can see why this one is on the list. A very groovy listen.
-The- definition of an epic rock album. Freddie Mercury's voice is angelic, and it was really nice to hear the band belt out some hard rock. It is a bit all over the place in terms of tone, though.
Like zeppelin but more excentric in the first half, uncut queen in the second. Contains none of the hits but that only served to pleasantly surprise. Good stuff.
A lot of nice songs
Un album de rock descarado y exagerado. ¡Me encanta!
4/5 Queen II flows effortlessly between bangers and ballads, with great vocals, songwriting and instrumental performances. There's some misses, but overall it's pretty cohesive and enjoyable. Procession 4/5 Father To Son 5/5 White Queen (As It Began) 5/5 (FAV) Some Day One Day 4.5/5 The Loser In The End 3/5 Ogre Battle 2.5/5 (LEAST FAV) The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke 4/5 Nevermore 4/5 The March Of The Black Queen 5/5 Funny How Love Is 4.5/5 Seven Seas Of Rhye 5/5
It was a very good album, and probably I never would her of it if not 1001 albums. But it’s not something I will listen in my casual life.
honestly a 4, i liked it
I thought this would be the album with Bohemian Rhapsody based on the cover. Decent, hadn’t heard any of these songs before.
Not the giant popular queen songs but amazing more traditional classic rock.
Una joya... Suena impecable y tremendo.
Some great stuff on here, starting to really find their whimsical feet with an album that mainly seems to be about some medieval fantasy stories. Some great riffs and solos and well structured. Really enjoyed.
....
Playful. A delight. Especially loved the second half of the album
‘The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stoke’, is a painting by Richard Dadd, a Victorian artist institutionalized for schizophrenia and murder. Like Dadd’s work, Queen II is strange, whimsical, cluttered with detail, and highly technically proficient. Anyways I have a soft spot for whacked-out heavy metal concept albums, as long as they’re short and efficient like this one.
The experience of listening to this album was thoroughly enjoyable and really got me pumped up for a Monday. Dramatic, lush, and honestly just very cool. 4 stars.
Side A (Side White) is pretty uneven. Definitely over-the-top with the vocal and guitar overdubs. The sword-and-sorcery prog lyrics don't help matters. Strangely, the highlight of that side is the one song where Freddy doesn't sing lead, "The Loser In The End." That song actually sounds more like something you'd hear from The Who than Queen. Side B (Side Black) is where the album really solidifies things. Everything that rocks, rocks heavier. Everything that is supposed to be more lyrical and sweet, is more skillfully lyrical and delicate. The biggest knock on this album, beyond the unevenness of Side White is the ridiculous dorkiness of the lyrics. But, thinking about this album in context of their overall output, the lyrics are no worse than what we get on the Flash Gordon soundtrack. The Flash Gordon soundtrack has the benefit of the ridiculously campy movie to take the heat for the lyrical content of the songs. Side White is probably 3 stars. Side Black is 4.5 stars. That averages out to 3.75, which I'll round up to 4 stars.
What an interesting album, loved it. It was, I dunno, grandiose. But in a good way. The Side White and Side Black was intriguing. The way the band members switch around roles, wow.
Great band. Great album.
Queen is interesting to me...every album has at least one just absolutely perfect song. This album, that song is Seven Seas of Rhye. But no album is perfect from start to finish. In that way, Queen are very consistent. The filler material on this album prevents it from being a 5 star, but there are 5 star songs.
A pretty different sounding album from their other stuff. I’m a fan of
The first side is decently good but not really the type of Queen I know and love. However the second side is and makes up for it. Fairy Feller is one of my favorite Queen songs.
Queen is one of those bands that puts out consistent work. I find their albums all enjoyable, but having listened to 3 for this project now, I feel like this album deserved to be on the list the least. There are other bands that made interesting and unique work around that time, or influenced by Queen. I hope that there isn’t so much Queen on the rest of the list so I don’t start to sour in them.
The album that really cemented the Queen sound. The endless overdubs that didn't exist on their debut, came out in spades for this album, and pointed their direction for the future.
Four gifted musicians in a band that will become one of the greatest Rock Bands of the 70's and 80's are still looking for her own signature-sound on this album and by the way creating a proper Rock album. Not my favourite Queen album but still way ahead of so many other albums on this selection.
норм, кажется ни одной песни раньше не слышал, парочку добавил
Great album without any of the over-rotated hits.
Great but not exceptional. To me this is a 'whole band' effort and it came out really well. Also a bit of a Brian May showcase which is awesome - underrated guitar player for sure. I was actually kind of happy this one didn't have any of the big hits, which we all know well (almost too well).
Queen - Queen II WOW! What an album this was! Definitely a BIG improvement from the previous album I heard (Dolly Parton). Never expected this album to go so hard, from the intro going to Father To Son, to the incredible riffs that went on songs like Some Day One Day, Ogre Battle and (the infamous) The March Of The Black Queen. Father To Son instantly became my favorite song on the album alongside The March Of The Black Queen and the last song, Seven Seas Of Rhye. Now THAT'S how you end an album that sounds as ambitious and hungry as this. This is incredible, and apparently it's not even their best album. I wonder what type of stuff they be cooking, but ngl, they DO be cookin fr ong. 1.- Procession = 7/10 2.- Father To Son = 10/10! 3.- White Queen (As It Began) = 9/10 4.- Some Day One Day = 9/10 5.- The Loser In The End = 8/10 6.- Ogre Battle = 9/10 7.- The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke = 8/10 8.- Nevermore = 7/10 9.- The March Of The Black Queen = 10/10 10.- Funny How Love Is = 8/10 11.- Seven Seas Of Rhye = 10/10 FINAL SCORE: 8.6
Racking up the 4s today, think i must be on drugs
this is a different kind of Queen than the one I'm used to; apart from the closer, I don't think I was familiar with any of these songs beforehand. a lot of the traits that I typically associate with their sound are present here, from the preponderance of overdubs to the progressive song structures to Freddie Mercury's dynamic, captivating presence as a lead singer. the difference, I think, is the heavier instrumentation; I'm not used to hearing Queen rock out to quite this degree! I like them in this mode, but it also feels a bit humdrum compared to their later albums. Sheer Heart Attack rocks harder, and A Night at the Opera really pulls out all the stops compositionally and instrumentally. despite that, I think this sophomore record of theirs deserves a lot of credit for being the one where they really started to find their footing. decent 7/10.
I can completely see why this album is included. It's not Queen's best album, but you can see it as a precursor to their best period. The sound was almost there, there are a few tracks that really show it. Not quite 5 star material for me, but a fucking good album nevertheless!
cohesive album from start to finish. classic queen sound, an album that has none of the hits I've heard before but all the songs are equally good
"but mags," you say after reading my review of A Night at the Opera, "queen DID have a narrative in an album! they did do stuff akin to prog rock!" ...did they? like, yeah this is Queen with a prog rock style to them, but is what they're doing here actually a narrative, or is it just them writing stuff about fantasy themes? you could PROBABLY construct a loose narrative from the songs here and there's definitely a choice made with each side's naming, but i feel like that's just them trying to put some intentionality into how it's constructed rather than an attempt at a coherent story. and that's just fine. and also, is it really the same band? something really weird happens when you start this record called Queen II -- it plays music from a band that seems like it's not entirely quite unlike Queen, but still feels like you could mistake it for an entirely different group if you weren't paying attention and interrogating what you're hearing. then you flip the record and oh my god it's Queen! hi!!! it's Freddie Mercury's theater vocals and Brian May's cool guitar that goes "wowbiddawowwow!!!" and Deacon and Taylor doin cool drums and bass work! wow! Queen II made me feel like a greyhound with separation anxiety. or i feel like that on a regular basis and Queen II made me interrogate that part of myself. take your pick.
Not their most accessible album, but you can hear the development of their musical style clearly. The “Black Side” is clearly the better side, but it is all good… especially for Queen fans!
3.5 - Wanted to like this more tbh, felt a little bit too composed
Very surprised to find a Queen album on the list where I'm unfamiliar with any of the tracks. And also how come Bohemian Rhapsody is not on this album with that album cover?! The tracklist here reads more like a Led Zeppelin album than a Queen one - lots of fantasy lore baked into the song themes. The start of Ogre Battle is pretty crazy - is there some reversed tape action going on there? The (pump fake) ending of The March of the Black Queen is a very clear precursor to the ending of Bohemian Rhapsody - interesting. I do really like the way the songs flow on this album - Funny How Love Is sounds like a Christmas song. Fave Tracks: The Loser in the End, Ogre Battle, Seven Seas of Rhye 4/5
4/5 not feeling well today
3.5
My appreciation for the more poetic side of lyricism is growing further the more I get into this challenge. Most entries so far have been great at this [to be fair, it's thanks to Neil Young that I'm even bringing this up now], and Queen II is a very strong note to follow up with in my journey of musical appreciation. This record is lush, and it is quite notable for being wrapped in the medieval fantasy themes that are likely Freddy's core input into this record. It paints a grandiose picture filled with so many references to royalties, magic, epic battles and adventures that you'd be forgiven to think you accidentally stepped into a DnD campaign. Sometimes it embraces this illustrious side so much that it ends up being absorbed in it, delivering style over substance. But don't get me wrong, the record's substance is still great. It is delivered without hesitation, right from the opening track, Father to Son, a beautiful existential piece about the cycle of life and passing down a legacy to your child. The March of the Black Queen, the most critically acclaimed song on the record, is a beautiful ballad about chasing the love of someone who clearly doesn't act in your best interest. Comprising the stellar second half of the record, it feels like a direct precursor to Queen's most celebrated song, Bohemian Rhapsody, both in sound and the vocal delivery of Freddy Mercury, who is yet to become the primary voice of the band. Yeah, surprisingly, Freddie Mercury is not yet the main face of the band, with most songs instead being sung either by Brian May or Roger Taylor. It makes The Loser in the End all the more surprising, as it kind of reads like Freddy airing out the grievances he has regarding his family, and yet he isn't even the person singing it. Regardless, it's also a major highlight, providing a strong statement on the responsibility of parenting and how mothers should not take their children's love for granted. This album is a solid preview for what's to come within Queen's discography going forward, as it's easy to sense the sound that will eventually blossom into their classic songs. And that is hardly metaphorical, either, as the final song, Seven Seas of Rhye, is credited as the final push the band needed to finally get to the point of producing the masterpieces for years to come.
Queen clearly had big plans. Their debut was pretty impressive, but the Regal Four probably didn't appreciate being compared to Led Zeppelin. So, they couldn't just turn up all the knobs to 11; they needed to tweak some things. Both Brian and Freddie had different ideas, so we get a side of each. Not that the sound is massively different for either side; Queen were united in that. It was in the lyrics. Freddie would be Fantastical on Side Black, whereas Brian would use the fantasy imagery to talk about more down-to-earth stuff like family and relationships on Side White. Well, from the lyrical content of later Queen albums you can tell who won that debate. Still, it all works brilliantly here. The guitar work is more intricate without sacrificing the emotional power (Brian even shows off his lovely singing voice for the first time as a lead vocalist) , Freddie is singing and playing his guts out and Roger and John are on top form too. My head wants to give it 5, since I enjoy all the songs and love many of them, and because of how well it flows, but it ultimately doesn't hit me the way that Sheer Heart Attack or Night at the Opera does. I think I need my Queen songs to feel personal. Tangent: Roger really didn't try to make his song fit lyrically with the others, though the subject matter does fit with Brian's songs, so it gets a pass. Fave: White Queen (As It Began) Least Fave: The Loser In The End Strong Bad Demerit Counter: 2
The last album from the first iteration of Queen's sound, which I am actually a big fan of. More proggy and heavier than the next releases. This is a very good record and it fully deserves the spot on this list.
4 pretty crazy rock opera lots of variety
so i consider myself a queen fan - not a huge superfan, but i like their music a lot. i'm slightly baffled by the inclusion of this one on the list. there are some shining moments on queen ii, but mostly, with the context of where the band would be headed over the next few years, this album feels a bit underwhelming. that's not to say i think it's a bad album, but just that i know queen can be and will be better and more consistent than this. they really have not hit their stride yet on this one, which i would not consider them having done consistently until perhaps their next album. what really makes this album is side two, which almost feels like it could be a mini rock opera. the first side is a lot more hit and miss, but there is nary a bad moment on side two. an iconic band progressing and approaching their timeless sound? yes. a must-hear album? not totally.
first listen 10/28 - filling in the glaring blind spot in my music knowledge that is Queen Album listen went as expected, great arrangements just not my cup of tea. Guitar is far better than I thought it would be.
Great album, I'm very glad to hear other members in the group like Brian May get the lead on some of the songs on the album. Seven Seas of Rhye and March of the Black Queen have been some of my favorites of theirs since I was a kid.
Freddie's voice is incredible. I get bored of how theatrical each track is, so I was kind of in and out of actually listening while this album was playing, but I'll defend Queen forever.
cool album bro march of the black queen is v cool, hadn't heard before. but i think it has all the elements i expect from queen cant go wrong w seven seas of rhye (all i think of is bohemian rhapsody (2018) )
I don't know if I've ever listened to any of the songs on this album before, but I enjoyed it
I didn’t know any songs on this album but generally like Queen and enjoyed this. 3.5 rounded up to 4.
This is a fantastic prog rock album which shows Queen as the great musical adventurers they were when they first began. Over time, they'd become a bit more mainstream, and have a bit more of an edge at times, but they were always willing to experiment. I consider them to be one of the best bands of my lifetime. I think I have to give this four stars, though, because of the "Bowie problem" i.e. so many of their records are great, you have to reserve five stars for a couple of them, not just give five stars to all the great records, as that would be ridiculous.
This album got a lot of airplay at my apartment years ago. Sounds great - captures a lot of their energy from their live shows. And they kept getting better!
pretty damn good. this is what "queen" sounds like, very definitive, very good. nothing stands out but not because it's bland but because each song is equally interesting and good. 7.5/10
Easy 3.5. An amazing album top to bottom. Queen👍
Better than the other one!
Preferred this to the later stuff when it all got a bit too theatrical
A classic
Good vibes.
Queen never fails to be unique and surprising. This isn't my favorite Queen album. The production quality is worse than usual, but still beats the best album by a lot of other bands.
lets fucking go
4/5 Great.
What can I say, I like this
Love the Black side written by Freddie, not so keen on the White side written by May
perfect
classic queen but -1 star because it's a whole lot of the same thing for an entire album
A very british feeling album, queen have such a distinct sound and style. This album really works best as a straight through listen, each song sort of blends into one another whilst retaining a clear distinct alteration in sound that it avoids becoming dull. The production throughout this entire album is also stellar and probably contributes to the seamless feeling. I dont think there is a stand out song for me here, however as a complete listening experience i certainly have to say not to give this one a miss.
Great!
I love queen
Pretty cool with some heavy Queen. Happy i listened to this album!
Classic Queen sound. Bit of a concept album. Sounds a little bit like Lord of the rings. Great sound though.
Big Queen fan in middle school. It was fun to listen to an album that only had one song I knew on it, Seven Seas Of Rhye. Must not have been a very big fan. This album was very operatic, which makes sense. Not many hits/single material, but all very cohesive. I still like Queen.
Muss zugeben ich kannte außer den großen Singles wenig von Queen. Guter Rock-Sound, hat mir gefallen. Fehlt aber ne Kleinigkeit für 5 Sterne, kurz davor Nevermore 10/10
Hey look, I found a Queen album I like! Full of life and character, but never annoying, like so much of Queen's output.
4.5 stars. Queen going for a one-off, grandiose, hard rock/glam rock tour that borders on heavy metal (e.g. "Ogre Battle") and I'm here for it. Can't quite pin down the genre but it makes for a varied listening experience. "Seven Seas of Rhye" closer is the standout. "Father to Son" also good.
It's solid but it feels a little off compared to Queen's following albums.
Should have listened to this album earlier. It's damn good.
Edgier than Night at the Opera
It was fine, standard Queen. Nothing that stood out to me, nothing wrong.
Good for a reason Lots of ‘AAAAA 👼👼👼👼👼👼’
Nice, a great Queen album. I really like some of their earlier stuff like this, even though they really didn't have much identity and were (pretty obviously on this album and their first) imitating Led Zeppelin. Still, some good music came out of it. Very solid album here. Favorite tracks: Father to Son, Ogre Battle, Nevermore, March of the Black Queen, Seven Seas of Rhye. Album art: Cool shadowed band shot, all the gents' faces coming through the void. Was this the first like it? Because it seems like a popular style. Given that this album was a Led Zepp attempt, I'm going to boldly assume that they didn't invent this cover style either. But it's an iconic look. 4/5
Good stuff. Not their peak though, I think
Expected more of Queen, but still good
Majestically
Enjoyable
Ok I thought I’d hate this but this was actually so good ??! 😭😭😭 led zep vibes ??? Favs: white queen, loser in the end, ogre battle, the march of the black queen
This one might not be packed with radio hits, but it's still Queen doing what Queen does best. The theatrical flair, the layered harmonies, the ridiculous talent across the board—it’s all here. They weren’t playing it safe, and that’s what makes it interesting. You can hear the band really starting to experiment, especially on the second half. Brian May’s guitar work is as sharp as ever and Freddie’s vocals are already larger than life. It's not the kind of album you'd throw on for a greatest hits vibe, but it's a solid listen if you want to hear a band finding their sound. Not essential Queen, but still pretty good.
Good solid hiqh quality album. Wouldn't buy it on CD/LP that's why it's just 4 stars.
Rock opera!!!!
Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Most of my Queen Exposure has been through their greatest hits packages and I wasn't familiar with this album at all. First listen I wasn't too sure, but by the end of the 2nd listen I was sold.
3.5 Good but not quite my taste
really surprised I've never consciously listened to any of these songs before
Undoubtedly a powerful record, but the fantasy theme just doesn't hit as hard as I'd like
Not the strongest queen album in my opinion. Still a pleasant listen. But won't come back to it.
Queen is among my all-time favorite bands, and I'll admit, it took a little while for me to really get this album. I'm only at a 4 (instead of a 5) because there are a slew of others in Queen's catalog that I personally like more, but it's telling that more than one devotee I know lists this as their favorite Queen album. In many ways — and certainly most consistently — this album showcases the band at its heaviest and most explorative and hints at so many elements that would work their way into the band's later material as flourishes and adornments. I'm thinking vocal harmonies that burst like thunder, Brian May's blistering guitar (often in harmony), drum fills that take you by surprise, and so much more. The band is tight as hell and completely on its own path, and you can hear so much of what is to come in the wild meanderings of this record. It's a great inclusion in this endeavor as it's one that non-Queen acolytes are likely not familiar with, but it really helps define who this band is.
Everything up to Ogre Battle is good. From there on, every song is great
Bello senz'altro, si capisce perché sono stati riconosciuti anche quando la scena rock era così satura. Nonostante mi senta di mancare di rispetto a leggende del genere non posso dare 5, ma è stato un piacevole ascolto comunque, insomma sono i Queen
Solid rock & roll
My first full Queen album. It's a whole lot more than than the sum of its parts, which makes me quite excited about their other albums, given how good the hits are. 4/5
Holds up.
Oh, this is a fun one. Playful and harder than glam. Lots of fantasy tropes. Good stuff.
Loved this. I realized my conception of Queen was mostly just a Freddie Mercury show, mostly propped up by greatest hits / singles, but this project really feels like a much bigger picture of the band as a unit and their collective flow and creativity. I actually liked that I didn't recognize any of the songs, I was able to just enjoy the ride.
Hey guys I need to learn how to rate albums-I clicked sthg and can't get back into it to rate B. Joel /the Stranger-it's an album from my childhood, grew up w/it in L.I. where it's the law to love him LOL - I know it by heart. I started w/you all on this day (7/31) so I've been going back on the wknds to catch up w/you! Almost done - Wilco album is on now.
Nice album.
A lush epic in which Queen homes in on the sound they became famous for. Massive, complex, and thought provoking compositions bolstered by a sonic tapestry built around Brian May's beautifully engineered guitar architecture (guitarchitecture?) and Freddie Mercury's mercurial vocals ;). Roger Taylor and John Deacon not only support this whole stratified monstrosity (which is continually threatening to cave in due to the sheer weight), they solidify and amplify the orchestration. This album gets more impressive every time I hear it. What an extremely good and interesting band Queen was.
very very good album. still enjoyed a night at the opera slightly more than this one
I was surprised to find this is much heavier and more fantasy themed than some of Queen’s later stuff that I’m more familiar with. Each track follows on nicely from the one before and, while none of the songs are amazing, the album as a whole feels greater than the sum of its parts. Though, I particularly liked Nevermore, White Queen (As It Began), and The March Of The Black Queen.
I don't know if was me or my sister who had The Best of Queen on cassette back in the day. It doesn't really matter, as it was a family favorite and played consistently on road trips. Played so much that I can no longer handle those hits and got tired of Queen, but now that I am older I can like going through Queen's catalog and listening to the songs that weren't ruined for me by overplaying.
relisten
One of my favorite things that an album can do is flow from one song into another. I think it really shows an intentionality to making an album, rather than just making a collection of songs. Queen is very good at that, even in their early days. Ogre Battle had me really worried that the second half of the album was going to be, uh, not good, but that song kind of stands alone as not great. Besides Ogre Battle being pretty rough, none of the other songs really stood out, good or bad. The whole album has an early/rough Queen Sound (tm), which they obviously refined later. The album misses out on being great, though, imo. Favorite Song(s): Some Day One Day, Nevermore
Least favorite Queen album of the first 4
Pre-listen: I am very excited for this one. Okay disappointed cause I did not know this album didn’t have the bohemian rhapsody. But the other songs were pretty good, I think there is a vibe going on, the songs are all different yet so good together, definitely has that black and white swan thing going on there. Would listen again 100%. 7.8/10
Queen were so good both lyrically and musically! This album has layers and each layer good!
I think Queen is a band where I'll only really be fond of their popular tracks. But this album is very fun
Not my favorite queen album but still queen.
the first song is an instrumental intro to the album and from the first note you can tell it’s a queen album because of brian may’s tone. it’s one of the most recognizable guitar tones in the history of recorded music. of course, freddie mercury’s vocals are in fine form. and the rhythm section is top notch. in short, it has everything you would expect from a queen album… full of pomp and extravagance. this was just their second album, yet it would lay the groundwork for queen albums to come. highlights: “father to son” “the loser in the end” “the march of the black queen” “seven seas of rhye”
I have never heard even one song off this album before because I am a fake fan but this hooked me right from the first track. Super neat way to start off the album, and a worthy introduction for the dramatic nature of the rest of the songs. I didn't LOVE every single song, so I'm only giving this 4 stars, but Procession, Father To Son, White Queen (As It Began), The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke, Nevermore, The March Of The Black Queen, and Seven Seasons Of Rhye stood out to me as favourites. The rest of the songs are still good but I think my expectations of Queen are just much higher than other albums on this list since they are such a phenomenal band
Like the rest of you, I'll do this in English from now on... I am a huge Queen fan, but to be fair, this is not peak Queen. Even though, it still is Queeeen and they deliver a steady album wíth variety in the tracklist, which I enjoy. It starts off slowly, but the end with The March of the Black Queen and Seaven Seas of Life is much better. The March is a proper good song - also I like how Funny How Love Is begins where The March ends. Even though they are completely different songs. 4/5 - but Ogre Battle doesn't belong anywhere in music history...
I don't think I've ever listened to this album before even though I feel like I've listened to quite a lot of Queen in my day. It's pretty clear to hear that this is the album where Queen really start to develop their trademark sound, but it's not quite the Queen we know yet. Some of the hardest/heavy Queen I've ever heard. Standouts The Looser In The End The March Of The Black Queen "That's the picture from bohemian rhapsody"/5 (4/5)
Theatrical happy vibes, plus ogres.
catchy and creative with quintessential queen sounds while also having sort of a fantasy bent to it.
queen II queen 1974 1. procession: 6/10 2. father to son: 7/10 3. white queen (as it began): 6/10 4. some day one day: 7/10 5. the looser in the end: 5.5/10 6. ogre battle: 7.5/10 7. the fairy feller’s master-stroke: 8.5/10 8. nevermore: 9/10 9. the march of the black queen: 7.5/10 10. funny how love is: 7.5/10 11. seven seas of rhye: 8/10 overall rating: 7.4/10
I love that this is Queen at their nerdy, mythical, progrock-y. It's incredible that this is the same band that came up with all their more pop-focused stuff. Like how is this the same band that wrote, "Best Friend?" Listening to this makes me want to spray paint a medusa with huge boobs on the side of a van. And I love that.
3.5
classic. one of the goat
Love Queen, loved this album !
Never heard this before. It was excellent
I'm pretty sure I've never heard any of these songs. Remarkable that this album hides out as it does. Also hilarious - very dark fantasy centric, to a nerd-asst level seldom seen pre D and D, which I think it was. Anyway all the queen ingredients and bombast are present, Brian May's guitar, immaculate songcraft, sweeping harmonies, stadium drums etc etc.
Alright
🔥
I don't think I've heard hardly any of these songs before, but Queen is still being Queen here and I'm all about it.
great gutar and sound
Very well made. However, it falls flat in their future projects, as most music does.
I was not aware of this record or really any of the songs on it but wow it's so good! There are some seriously good songs on here with a lot of variety in sounds and instruments. I also love the transitions between songs. I love the prog elements of it. I really wish I had known about this sooner.
What a rad album! Its interesting to me that most people know Queen through their Greatest Hits record (myself included), but in reality, a lot of their records were like this. Kind of glam rock dabbling in prog. Its kind of a messy concept album with fantasy elements, but it seriously rocks so hard. Every song on this record is a gem. It flows together super nicely, its fun to listen to, its moves up and down where it makes sense. This record is totally a gem.
Progehtava, loistava
Really enjoyed listening to a bunch of Queen songs I didn't know.
Sounds like Queen...
It’s definitely Queen but it’s different. Not an album I knew much about, it doesn’t have any of the “massive” Queen songs - a bit early. It’s a bit heavier and possibly a bit rougher but is undeniably Queen.
3.5/4
Cool
No surprise the third album on the list is another Queen album. Feel like this album has had just as much of an impact as Sheer Heart Attack. Fav song from this album is Seven Seas of Rhye, such a classic
Whimsical, bombastic and peculiar songs. Freddie's singing is impressive as always. Stand-out: The Fairy Fellers Master-Stroke, Seven Seas of Rhye
Queen’s Queen II is a cool little album. From a band I’ve heard alot about, I was expecting for this to be somewhat good, and it delivered to an extent. The first half was mostly worse, with the only song I really liked being Father to Son, which was evidently extremely recognizable, and a nice listen. However, my favorites are definitely Nevermore and The Fairy’s Feller’s Master-Stroke. The latter felt really switched up in vibes compared to the album as a whole, and Nevermore was just almost perfection. All in all, Queen II is a good album. Best Song: Nevermore Worst Song: The Loser In the End
Not quite Queen’s finest hour, but still pretty great. Goofy and dramatic, long epics mixed with short ballads, piano-heavy arrangements mixing with thick guitar showcases, overall a great listen despite a couple weak songs. Can’t help but enjoy the incredible harmonies they put together.
So good. No night at the opera, but I love the theatrics
excellent, strong album from top to bottom.
What a surprise! My music knowledge is more wide than deep. I had never heard any of these songs, so I was thrilled to get an unexpected prog masterpiece. I will definitely be returning to this one. Four stars.
3.9/5 listened 1x
I tend to like Night at the Opera more, but Queen II is still a classic.
It's like seeing a baby picture of your husband, you can see what they'll become but the features are still a little blurred, puberty hasn't quite hit. And the further you go into the album the more it sounds like Queen. Nevermore and Seven Seas of Rhye, especially. Enjoyed this more then I thought I would. The songs sound great together, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
I forgot how bluesy Queen could be. I listened to the deluxe version, and there were some live recordings. It was so interesting to hear them next to the studio recorded song. They sounded almost identical.
Good album. It never reaches the genius levels of A Night At the Opera, but you can see them heading that direction
Was surprised to find a Queen album that was entirely new to me, but this was great (less surprised by that part)
Amazing. How?
Is every queen album considered a classic? This ones good. Fun, grandiose.
Queen is just so good at making a big sound and they did it on Queen II. Not all tracks hit for me but most did. It may be a true 3.5 but I’ll round up bc of how much I liked Ogre Battle, just an excellent sonic pummelling track. 4 stars
3.5
Slayyyy what a good way to start
Oceanically epic.
This is the most I've ever wanted to have half stars. This is good, and I can't only give it a three, but I don't really feel it's a four either. But for Queen, I'll round up!
Its no 'night at the opera' but Q2 is more consistent than the eponymous debut and a reminder they were not just a singles band but could really, really rock in those early days.
Seven Seas of Rye is my favorite song off this album. It's generally quite good.
It's hard not to like Queen.
can't not love queen ! vibes. esp Seven Seas Of Rhye of course. 4/5
70’s rock was weird but interesting.
I liked this album. It’s like a softer, younger Queen than I’m used to. I think I like Some Day One Day the best. But I didn’t mind any of these songs really.
I'm getting this as my second Queen album on this list. I've never listened to this album before and was not familiar with any of the songs on it. This is a very good progressive rock record and I can hear Queen developing their signature sound. Comparing this to "Sheer Heart Attack" which was the other record I have had on the list, I would give the nod to the 3rd album, but this one has several shining stars. One thing that I came to realize from both of the records was that I enjoy Roger Taylor's contributions as some of my favorite Queen songs. Highly underrated.
Wow! Very different from the Queen music that gets overplayed. Fun stuff.
4.5/5
Queen is always good.
Seems like a concept album. I had not heard any of the songs before, but clearly a good Queen album.
The definition of the sound of Queen as a band
Wacky queen opening very similar to the national anthem at the end of night at the opera. Father to son was a fucking banger and acted well as the first song of the album. It had me very excited for the rest. I then also really like the accustic guitar on some day one day before being hit round the face with the super loud drums and bass on the loser in the end. The fairy feller’s master stroke was super wacky and the way it transitioned into nevermore was awesome. Overall very yummy and pure queen wackiness. Well done Freddy Jupiter 8.5/10
not bad, some mm songs but some actually yes good yum songs 7/10
4 stars
Whoa. I knew Queen had a different sound before “A Night at the Opera” and “Jazz,” but I didn’t know how hard they rocked. There’s a ton of different influences to be heard here. The Who jumps to mind immediately. But also some Zeppelin and Bowie, maybe a bit of the Stones. Anyway this was a thrill. Some real artistry on display, even on their second album. I liked the separation of songs May and Taylor wrote on side 1 from songs Mercury wrote on side 2. It really gives the album two distinct feels, which was intentional. Freddie’s vocals shine because Freddie’s vocals always shine. Brian May is unleashed in a few of the songs and it’s just a joy to listen to. You even get what I consider a precursor to “Bohemian Rhapsody” in “The March of the Black Queen.” Overall it’s a great album, though side two did start to lose me a bit as it went on. Still, 4 stars. Standout tracks: Father to Son, Some Day One Day, The Loser in the End, Ogre Battle, The March of the Black Queen
An absolute stomper. Amazing musical complexity. The gold standard for metal/rock bands to come. And that voice… *shivers*
A new side to Queen. Original, I need to listen to it again.
Very similar to Led Zeppelin. I enjoyed the album never heard those songs before.
would have gotten a 5 if bohemian rhapsody was on this album
A few of the songs are straight filler, more than a few overstay their welcome, and the production quality is quite poor, even for the era. Nevertheless, the band's creativity and songwriting abilities shine through nicely on a number of tracks, resulting in some fantastic moments. A reluctant 3.5 stars rounded up to four. 3.5/5.0: Very Good
queen ii is, not surprisingly, queen's second album. i definitely hear their signature sound, though it's not fully formed quite yet. i hear little snippets of what queen would eventually become, like the beautiful piano work, or songs just bordering on opera-esque in terms of intensity. the biggest hit on here is "seven seas of rhye," but that song doesn't even crack queen's top songs now because they had such an elaborate discography. still, even without a big hit to entice the listener, the album is extremely good. the song "white queen (as it began)" contained some south asian-like sounds, almost like a sitar but there was no credit to anyone using one. but i take it as a nod to freddie mercury's heritage!
This is an interesting Queen album to include, as it does not include any of their hits. Instead, it really hones in on the art rock, hard rock, and prog rock side of Queen. These are aspects of the band that get to shine brightly with this inclusion that otherwise don't show up as strongly in their more mainstream hits. Even though none of these songs were hits, ultimately resulting in this being a lesser known Queen album, the irresistible magic of Queen is still incredibly present here.
I love classic rock but would never to think to put on a queen album. I enjoyed it, definitely re-listening to this one
I like the fantasy theme The 7 seas of rye is the only song I knew before listening Overall, this album is fun to listen to, I really liked the silliness
glad to not hear overplayed songs by them. i like the piano and wierd time signatures; not a huge fan of the stops in songs to interrupt the flow. i appreciate the ground broken here though.
For a band I normally associate with well known pop/ rock classics, I didn't know a single somg on this album. It's still a great time and you can see a lot of precursors to things like Bohemian Rhapsody in the White/ Black Queen tales. I liked it, though I don't think it's peak Queen. For the year this came out in, 1974, this rocks quite hard, and Brian May's guitar sounds timeless to me.
The earliest Queen I've heard to date. Solid record, of course. Sick drum intro on The Loser In The End, but not keen on Roger Taylor's RAWWWK vocal delivery. Favourite tracks: Procession, Father to Son, Some Day One Day, Nevermore.
Not what people usually think of when they think of Queen. Haven't gone for it in a while but I did enjoy this listen. Probably cracks top 10 Queen albums.
Some great songs, but not my favourite Queen album.
Really good
I love Queen and this is some good stuff but it is definitely some of their earlier work. Seven Seas of Rye is an absolute slapper and this album has some solid other entries. Overall a good album that I would come back to. Probably wouldn't be my first choice of Queen but it's still Queen and still good.
