Reviews (page 5 of 14)

If you like a bit of Bowie, Low night be a difficult one to get into. The first in what's known as his 'Berlin Trilogy' in collaboration with Brian Eno, it marks an experimental shift from his prior albums, even though he was already developing a reputation as a chameleon. Not the album if you're looking for great pop songs (except for the classic 'Sound & Vision') but the first half tilts more towards the tunes, such as the underrated 'Be My Wife'. Then in the second half, there's all fucking sorts going on. Instrumentals that stay interesting enough to not feel long - they are not a blazing noise, they feel simultaneously ambient and sparse like some sort of dystopian hellscape in a sci-film set beyond the Iron Curtain. I've absolutely no idea if that was his plan, like. But you have to credit the balls on him for departing into this experiment literally halfway through an album. I won't give it five stars because like, where are the great songs. But it's impressive and a quality listen if you take your time with it.

Breaking Glass Sound and Vision Always Crashing in the Same Car Be My Wife A New Career in a New Town Warszawa Art Decade

The first of three albums Bowie recorded in Germany, this one sees him making something of a departure from the style he'd previously developed. Less psychedelic prog, less guitar rock, more avant-garde experimental. Co-produced by Tony Visconti, and made in collaboration with Brian Eno, it's definitely one of the stranger Bowie albums. It only produced one charting single (Sound and Vision) and to be honest that doesn't surprise me, as it's a bit of a marmite album, with people either loving it or hating it. From a pop perspective it isn't all that accessible, with its mix of vocal and instrumental tracks, and its (at the time) unprecedented use of synthesizers and harmonizers, but from a technical perspective it's simply amazing, with what I personally think is some of Bowie's most groundbreaking work. That said, it's not my favourite Bowie album, and while it's definitely an important one where the evolution of his art is concerned, I'm only able to give it a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

This was an interesting one. I've heard about Low (and Bowie's vaunted "Berlin period") for years, but I've never been able to access these before. The A side is all angular, jangly art-rock, while the flip side is all synth-heavy instrumental tone poems. Setting up the album like this works really well - the balance is excellent, once you've grown tired of the prickly rock you can lay down in a soft bed of synths. I get the feeling the more I listen to this one the more I'll like it. FOUR STARS

so fun and funky

On a second listen, I appreciated this a lot more.

also good! mostly instrumental though 7/10

Another Bowie Banger. I do prefer Ziggy Stardust however

I loved the first half of this album, such a great drum sound and production that serves the song. The second half wasn’t as gripping, but still interesting especially in contrast to the first.

This is my very first Bowie album! I know a song here and there but as an into to Bowie overall, this one was interesting. I liked the incorporation of electronic elements throughout! Sound and Vision was my favorite but was too short!

Not my favorite Bowie album but still really good. Listened to it driving 101 with the windows down.

Liked it

Long opening compare to the now fast paced world but still worth a listen . Lost of hard notes and high quality electric guitar

I liked the instrumental components of this album. It felt spacious, fun. I really liked “a new career in a new town”

I prefer the art rock Bowie over the glam/space rock Bowie. Low is probably the best embodiment of the former -- it does get self-indulgent towards the end, but that's what makes Bowie Bowie anyway.

Two Bowie albums in a week? Fine with that, Low is great, maybe better than Heroes? Who cares.

Moody. Bowie and Eno lock in fully to the post punk synth experience and it's some ride.

Never listened to a Bowie album before but really liked the sound.

Cool. Has some songs that are out there and sound like they’re from Dune.

Best: Warszawa Worst: Best my Wife Found it interesting that it was inspired by NEU!, whose work I also enjoyed. I love how avant garde and cinematic it feels, and I can't agree with reviews that critique it for being negative.

This is a brilliant album, that was so ahead of its time. The vocals on this album are amazing as always with Bowie but I didn’t anticipate how heavily instrumental it would be, which I think made it all the more interesting and allowed for more experimental tracks. This feels very different to his earlier albums released, more raw and real, stepping away from his glam rock persona into more somber version of Bowie.

Share bride failing star Care-line, care-line Care-line, care-line riding me Shirley, Shirley, Shirley, own

Even for Bowie, this sounds pretty alien (in a good way).

I mustbadmit I had never heard a full Bowie album, but honestly, I totally biy it, Bowie is amazing. I really like his experimentation with ambient music and his instrumental has his music signature but still surprised me. The first half there are some good tunes and the second half is good vibes so, yep, good album 4/5

It’s wild to think that I had never listened to a David Bowie album just two months ago and now I’ve knocked out nearly half of his Book Albums. Probably about time to start working my way through the Beatles’ discography, eh? Low was an interesting listen for me because, although it has a very similar structure to “Heroes” and is part of the same trilogy, my feelings about it are somewhat inverted – whereas “Heroes” felt like a collection of singles with an unnecessary instrumental detour in the back half, its predecessor comes across as more authentic in its approach. Perhaps more than any other Bowie LP I’ve listened to (including Ziggy Stardust), Low has a very specific sonic identity. It sounds weird and alien and psychedelic (sometimes to the point of annoyance), but it never loses that core sound. The ambient tracks especially feel like they’re feeding into that identity and ended up being the majority of the album’s highlights for me. Overall, I reckon Low has higher lows and lower highs than “Heroes”, but its commitment to a singular vision elevates it above most of the David Bowie LPs I’ve heard so far (Ziggy Stardust is still handily the top dog in my book). Big up Brian Eno! Highlights: Speed of Life, Sound and Vision, Always Crashing in the Same Car, Warszawa, Art Decade, Weeping Well, Subterraneans

Although I class myself as a Bowie fan, I have never heard this album in full nor many of the tracks off of it so I was very intrigued when I saw this was my album today. I love the single 'Sound & Vision' so I thought I knew what to expect. Nope. I could hear the Bowie sound throughout the album, even in the most sideways tracks so I always knew that he was there, and that was reassuring. With Bowie, I always know I'm in safe hands even if it is a little outside of my comfort zone. This is part of his genius. So, the second side; I read some of the reviews before I got to it and it was a mixed bag so I wasn't sure what to expect. It was either going to be magnificent or the worst thing I'd ever heard. I found it to be beautiful. 'Warszawa' made me cry (maybe it's me, but I could hear a little bit of 'Walking In The Air' from The Snowman in it, which, lest we forget' is a David Bowie movie!) and isn't 'Subterraneans' just a back-street, whisky-lovin' sexy little song? I found each track to be interesting and well-paced and I didn't get bored at all. Although, I have been listening to a lot of Night Tracks on Radio 3 recently so my tolerance, understanding and patience for 'experimental' or 'avant-garde' music and increased enormously. I'm not sure me 6 months ago would have been quite so enamoured. What I admire so much about Bowie is that he kind of goes, "I'm into this now. Come with me." and takes us all along for the ride. He includes us. I've just noticed that I'm talking about him in the present term, like he's still with us. And as long as I'm listening to his music, he bloody well is.

Not what I was expecting. Really grew on me through the album into the moody instrumental songs. Some Reich-like vibes, some really great synth work.

So beautiful. Total banger. I remember lostening to this so many times when I was getting into Bowie and not getting it. But as you get further into this album it feels less angular and you find yourself seeing whatever the big fish idea was swimming in Iggy and David’s heads when they decided to use early synthesizers and weird funk music and chant. Nothing like it. I think it picks up a good bit in the second half. I’m excited to listen again though it’s so mysterious.

Typischer Bowie sound deer sich gut anhören lässt

Honestly really enjoyed it. 4.5 /5

so much going on, so many different genres, instruments, sounds. not a lot of actual singing which surprised me. it does really take you through a feeling. when the album restarted the last song to the first song was such a jump but throughout bowie eases you into his change.

so many different things all in the space of one album wow

'Nuff said.

So different than I anticipated! Really enjoyed it. Will come back for another listen.

Awesome

Much better than black star

I liked it, had forgotten about this one and i would recommend if someone is looking for a trip down memory lane

One of the best Bowie albums I have heard.

An interesting but uneven album that's hard to review, considering the huge difference between A-side and B-side. A-side is pure Bowie art rock, enjoyable but also quite predictable. The inclusion of weird krautrock sounds is welcome, but can sometimes feel a bit artificial (and clearly copied on some of the music Bowie could hear in Berlin). It’s in B-side that things get interesting. The Bowie-Eno collaboration is at its best here. They really captured the quintessential mood of krautrock and new-age ambient music, going into Tangerine dream (or even minimalism) territory with otherworldly sonorities and beautiful, meditative loops. Warszawa, Weeping Wall and Subterraneans are the real gems of this album in my opinion. Had the whole album been of this calibre, it would have been an instant 5*. But the first half is too conventional for me, so I’ll have to downgrade it a bit. It's still a fascinating and original work, overall ; I’m not surprised Philip Glass made several symphonies about the Berlin trilogy. Bonus points for the cover art from The Man Who Fell to Earth, a strange and beautiful movie where Bowie looks truly alien. 8/10

Fun album, sounds exactly as years it was made in. Not my favourite but cool at 28:30 sounds af if some scene from old sci-fi about space travels where someone from crew was kidnapped by locals on one of the planets

For a mostly instrumental album, this one kept me more engaged. It was interesting but only lost me at a few of the stranger moments.

Very enjoyable not very outstanding from other Bowie’s albums but production quality was outstanding

I really like this. The album flew by. And there was way more instrumentals than I expected. A good album

Not a Bowie I know well and that’s a shame. This is a really cool album. Lots of really interesting synth, good distortion and the kind of Bowie lyrics/vocals I don’t find super annoying. More of this!

13/12/2025 As much as I dislike Bowie albums, this one was actually okay. Spotify listeners: 18.9 million

A fun album, wasnt expecting pink floyd/radiohead esque electronic music.

Psychedelic, avant-garde, experimental journey that left me perplexed why I liked it. The instrumentals were at times disturbing, but soothing. Go figure why it's a 4/5 but that's my call. Listened before? N Saved some tracks? Y Favorite tracks? Be My Wife, Always Crashing in the Same Car ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Liked it a lot. Saved some tracks.

I feel like a middle school teacher when I listen to David Bowie. If he would just work up to his potential, it would be so good

Oh hell yes. I'm a Bowie fan but really have never given this album the attention it deserves. 'Low' is such a fitting name, as its really understated and sublime. I can see why it wasn't as commercially successful as his other releases, and in its time I was more consumed with the outright punk scene, but what a treat to listen to decades later and hearing how well it stands the test of time.

There is so goddamn much happening in this album. I’ve barely begun to digest all the layers, and this is like my 4th time listening to it. Which means it will be a gift that keeps on giving. Can’t wait to listen again.

Very ambient. Maybe too ambient

Sound and vision is my fav David Bowie song so I’m a little biased off the bat. Never heard “Always Crashing in the Same Car” and loved that one. The end of the album got a little too extraterrestrial and lost me a little. Really good, not my favorite of his overall.

I was not familiar with Bowie's game; I should listen to more of his work because I quite liked this.

This is an interesting album for me. Being a fan of krautrock and ambient music, it's cool to see Bowie (and Brian Eno, to be fair) interacting with those genres. The first side of this album (I have it on vinyl, but the split on this album is pretty obvious even if you don't) is pretty cool. Bowie the songs feel kind of fragmented and spiky and the lyrics are dark. But my favorite part of this album by far is the second side. It's a set of ambient songs that pretty much wordless. The only time we hear voices at all are some wordless chants. They remind me very much of what I like about kosmische Musik: flowing instrumental melodies that make feel like I'm floating on the music.

When Bowie goes Low, we get high. Sometimes poo-poo'd as sour Kraut-rock, this album is actually a savory stew of steckrüben that reveals its flavours the way an orange sunset shimmers from gold to gray. "I skipped the part about love..." Blink and you might miss it. But pop this CD into the player on a dreary day where the temperatures dip and water ice gilds the pavements, and you will be rewarded, peering from behind a wall, changed, and delivered.

It's good

This grew on me over a few listens, high 3, nice atmosphere

Solid album. Ahead of its time.

This is my favourite of the Berlin trilogy. I love how it feels like Bowie breaking everything apart and starting again—raw, fractured songs up front, then those eerie, beautiful instrumentals that pull you into another world. It’s so inventive and atmospheric that I almost gave it five stars, but something about its starkness keeps it just shy. Still, an incredible album that never stops fascinating me.

Overall, I enjoyed this album. I preferred the second half better than the first. Mostly because I do not really care for bowie’s voice in this album.

Dave never made it easy for us. Pushed the envelope, tried it on, got in our face, refused to do the same old same old. And then there's Eno. I just checked the front door to see if he was there, as he pops up everywhere else does Brian. I mean Davey bolts to Berlin to get his head clear, do a bit of faux fascism and move onto the next thing, and Brian turns up at his Wim Wenders style grungy apartment asking for a cup of sugar! And so to the tunes: I always thought Speed of Life would have made a great Sweeney type TV theme, just an absolute cracker of a tune and top shelf opener. Then onto the big eighties drums before there was eighties drums of Breaking Glass, it kicks and he's in fine voice. Ditto Always Crashing in the Same Car, "Brian, pick up the phone and that young man Gary Numan if he's listening?". And then Sound and Vision? I mean what is that, is it of this world? The bass and drums are something else, what a sound. Low hold up, its good, really good and for my part an equal partner in the Berlin records run. Worth investigating deadbeats, you'll love it.

Fantastic, especially side B

bowie's great, love me some bowie, i've heard better bowie thoughie. 4/5

I can totally hear how it has tentacles that influenced all kinds of music I love that came out in the following couple of decades but the "experiments" to "songs that go hard" ratio is just too far out of wack to stand up to a bunch of true five-star albums of his from this era.

Not my favourite Bowie but still great.

I liked the first half of the album. Didn't think I would, but it grew on me immediately.

Varied, ethereal and cosmic. Felt timeless in a specific way, could have been produced last year or 40 years ago. I'll be waiting for the 2037 remaster, since it seems to need one every 20 years.

Really liked the last couple of songs

Literally listen to this about four times took me a little bit, but really started to love it. It’s intentionally lopsided which took me off guard at first it kind of descends into this weird cozy ambient womb. It’s like reverse birth.

Some Bowie tops and some pretty forgetable. A legit 4.

Excellent and moody record. You can hear exactly where Josh Homme got influenced for the back half of his career

This is a great Sunday morning album. I got up before the family made my coffee while listening to this on the headphones. Good album. It's not one full of "hits" but it's a classic Bowie album, Be My Wife is on the playlist now. Good stuff... I considered myself a Bowie fan but don't think I've ever actually listened to this one. I need to do a deep dive and listen to everything he's done.

I'd only heard Bowie's main stream stuff, which I don't care for. But this was great, particularly the second half instrumental stuff. I'd not realised he did instrumental tracks, or that some of his influences were Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. Look forward to hearing more.

The beginning of the album was more rock oriented, very captivating guitar sounds. Have some odd feeling of this album, very pealising though.

So, I guess my rating would be equal to Heroes. Side A, comprised of songs, is great, but a little weaker than side A on Heroes. However, side B with mostly instrumentals works a little better than on Heroes. So, all in all, it's balanced out for a strong 4/5. Bowie has definitely become my favourite songwriter through this challenge.

Bowie is amazong. Loe is a classic album

Ahh-aah

5/7 absolute good

Ethereal as hell baby

Tän oon kuullu ennenkin, nuoruudessa Foobar2000 musalistalla oli Bowien koko tuotanto. Subterraneans on levyn paras ja olen valmis tappelemaan aiheesta

Ambient

How many letters have been spilled in wild abandon or words spent in cool repose writing about David Bowie's Low? Certainly, there's little need to rehash the mystique of his Berlin trilogy or the time spent trying to get sober and hanging with Iggy Pop in France. Maybe it makes more sense to dive into the sound of the album and praise Tony Visconti and Brian Eno alongside Bowie himself. Or maybe the best thing to do is just say that while it's not my favorite of his, it's certainly a good one — and it will grow on you if it didn't grab you right away (even the back half which does its thing differently). All you need to do is give it space and time, like an alien fallen to Earth. While all that's true, I also want to give a little space/time to George Murray, who doesn't get enough praise for his bass playing on this record. Low goes because of the low. His lines are compelling and often the most driving element in the songs, lending a propulsion that helps Bowie stretch out when he wants to. The music would be less dynamic without him.

interestingly more instrumental than id imagined which is a nice surprise i havent tapped into bowie yet so maybe this is not new for him LMAO lemme stream his other work🤓

Interesting. Very toned-down in the Bowie-ness. A fair bit of instrumental in there.

An atmospheric soundtrack

Interesting sound, usual phenomenal vocals. Favourite Bowie track ever with Sound and Vision on the album which keeps it high for me. Warszawa an incredible instrumental. Feels almost like two separate albums. Can understand why it might not be to everyone’s taste but I’m a fan

Not my favorite Bowie album, but still a classic

Always Crashing in the Same Car was a choice song for a road trip. Good though.

Was at gym so it wasnt best scenario

The first half of this was great.... I guess I just wasn't ready for the instrumentals. Looking back at it now they were good.... I just didn't expect the shift in the album. Weeping Walls stood out in the second half. Every song before Be My Wife was also very entertaining. I'm going to revisit this album. After realizing what it was I'm very intrigued. 4/5

One of my favorite albums of his, now. And I'd never heard it before today. I especially liked the soundscapes of the 2nd half. And to think that this is at the same time he's out with Iggy Pop making Lust for Life & Passenger and touring with him. There's a lot going on in this time period and we get these lovely sonic pictures out of it.

Really enjoyed this album! There’s a lot of cool influence from the Germans that I enjoy. Liked this a lot more than Bowie’s usual fare. Don’t find myself coming back to this album the same way I do a lot of my 5s but had a great time with this one.

I didnt hear this until the mid 1980s. It blew my little mind. This is where my love of ambient music came from. Love it...

Oh yeah this'll grow on me more I bet.

Loved the tone shift in the album, not something I have heard much on this list even from some of the more experimental albums. A very strong 4.

After listening, I read the Wikipedia summary of the album where it was mentioned that Bowie worked with Brian Eno on Low. And suddenly, everything fell into place. This thing has Eno all over it as Bowie makes a song or two too many ambient tracks on this record. It also has the bleeps and bloops of early electronica on it as well. 4.5 stars, rounding down because of the too many ambient songs.

Bowie is one of those artists where I listen and go "wow this is very well done and extremely creative." And proceed to never go out of my way to listen again except a couple of songs. I think his wide variety leads him to make great music that just isn't as good as the major artists of every genre he touches. Doesn't mean this album isn't very good, its just not memorable for me.

Randomly chose to listen to this on my own months ago and I dig it!

12.10.25 #16 favourite Tracks: Breaking Glass Rate: 7/10

Such a weird record. The first side is these kind of amazing, deeply textured pop funk soul fragments (abstracted into Bowie-space), but the mostly icy passionless ambient side two, I feel like I should academically have some feelings for. I don't

like it

While instrumentals often leave me cold, it was interesting to hear Bowie dedicate half the album to them. While this might not be one of his albums I readily revisit, I appreciate that it presented something new about him as an artist.

Strangely compelling icy soundscapes.

An interesting piece of work

Classic Bowie. This one really holds together as a cohesive album and one that I definitely want to revisit as I had only heard a couple of songs before. Thoroughly enjoyed, even the mostly instrumental second half.

Really good. Somehow felt both a wonderment for life and a sense of melancholy.

Great tones (drums!) and interesting textures, but songwriting is less focused.

Last David Bowie album I didn't get it, this one I'm slowly starting to! Very fun and weird. I particularly enjoyed all the instrumentals at the end.

My favorite from Bowie so far

I never listened to this album before. Liked all the beeps and boops. Would listen again.

Artsy & Weird, but in all the best ways. 4.5⭐️

Side A is so good.....but goddamn Side B is so fucking weird. (5 stars + 3 stars) / 2 sides = 4 stars

I unfortunately think I've finally embraced the fact that I just don't enjoy Bowie's music all that much. It's genius, and the mastering is absolutely top notch. I just don't like it. That said, I'll not knock and album just because I don't like it. This really is a brilliant album.

Even though Bowie has the most entries on this list, there's a very good chance Brian Eno is associated with more albums than anyone else. With that being said, what a wonderful collaboration of these two on David Bowie's Low.

Bowie stands out. Even his weak albums sound unique and like him.

Just a great album and it’s crazy to have an album this good not even be in your top 5

I'm a Bowie fan - this is really solid. Some of the electronic tracks get a bit unfocused for my taste, but really entertaining overall.

Really enjoying this one. Lyrics aren’t catching me like I enjoy but the texture is so ahhhhh. This album is making me enjoy instrumentals

I appreciate that it wasnt straight forward and every track wasnt the same. Slowly turning into a instrumental album by the end shocked me but didnt turn me away. Tracks with vocals had a lot of glam rock/new wave flare which is an era i prefer when it comes to Bowie.

Sehr angenehme Komposition, wirklich schön, dachte nicht unbedingt, dass Bowie was für mich ist, gut dass ich mal reingehört habe :)

It's not my favourite Bowie album, but you can't deny it is one of his most daring.

"Speed of Life" is a jam. "Sound and Vision" fun, classic. "Be My Wife" fun bass. Cool sounding piano Gets nice and weird in the second half.

I feel like every Bowie album is at least a 4, most are branching on 5. Love the musicality in this album, the band feel a bit more like they’re the attraction and Bowie is just running around then singing about random shite. 4.8/5.0 Best Song: Sound And Vision COME ON

Of the many Bowie records I've generated so far, this one has the most Goblin King energy of them all by a factor of about 100. The more I hear, the more I'm convinced this is no mere record, but a prophetic rite of some sort. He will rise again. Just believe.

Good album

The first Bowie album I listened to (and only one so far), which is now the first Bowie album I listen to for this project. The album really just blows my mind. The four songs between Sound and Vision and A New Career in a New Town is such a great run. The rest of the album, which are mostly some nice-sounding instrumentals, don't really hold up for me. Not as much as that middle. Still a very strong album for me, and a close 5.

Sound and vision

Big fan of this one, it was a relaxing vibe throughout the album that was a nice change of pace from his previous albums

the first half is pretty fun, even if it's not really my thing, but the second half is the meat of the album. it's crazy that a commercially successful artist was allowed to put that out. very steve reich-influenced, and thus i like it a lot. music for 18 musicians should be required listening for anyone seriously interested in the history of modern music - its fingerprints are all over everything today.

Bowie’s Berlin era is among the best work of his career

Very experimental

Who doesn’t love Bowie 🩵

Ahhh the first record of the Berlin trilogy. If I’m honest the Berlin trilogy has always been a little overrated for me. Not bad by any means still better than most artists ever did but I’ve always like glam Bowie best. This album is great. “Breaking Glass”, “Sound And Vision”, and “Always Crashing The Same Car”, are particular highlights. However it loses some points because the mostly ambient experimental music which isn’t my thing, but it’s interesting at the very least and I love Bowie.

David Bowie doesn't have a bad album

4.5 stars

First time I ever listened to all of Low, and though it didn't produce many chart toppers, this was one of Bowie's sonically best projects. It's on display in Sound and Vision, the most accessible song, but songs like Warszwa also take you on a musical journey. I found it superior to the Heroes album.

David Bowie goes Germany and makes an album while doing heaps of cocaine that would make Tony Montana jealous.

Great album. So varied and interesting. The second half in particular. Looking back, it’s admirable how many risks Bowie took with this album, and a lot of his albums. One of his best albums in my opinion.

Really great album!

A lot of instrumental tracks that feel epic. I enjoyed all. Favorite songs: Speed of Life, Sound and Vision, Warszawa.

Kind of experimental. Unexpected wordlessness

The B side is heavy Brian Eno. Good stuff.

It's a great album throughout, but not quite a 5* for me.

David Bowie: Low: A pretty cool and varied album. It feels experimental, and it mostly sticks the landing, though some parts do feel like he was just trying things out for the hell of it. A lot more of an instrumental album than I expected, but it is pretty good. Pretty enjoyable and pretty out there, it has my respect. 8/10

I liked this more than other records of his tbh, I don't know why.

Yay more David Bowie! "Low" is my favorite of Bowie's Berlin trilogy. It perfectly blends his signature glam rock sound with Eno-esque ambience. A unique and enjoyable listening experience. Favorite track: Sound and Vision

Contains probably my fav Bowie song

Good album. First time really listening to a Bowie album from beginning to end.

15/05/25 - afternoon 4/5 I missed reviewing yesterday due to it being results day - I got into my desired uni for anyone reading. Anyway, seeing David Bowie as the day's album got me excited. I had not heard of this album before or any of the songs on it, overall I really enjoyed the tracks on the first half. The second half escaped my interest. From Warszawa It seemed to become a experimental conceptual free for all. Which I would have usually liked if it hadn't have come out of nowhere. Highlights of the album were the 1st track (loved the instrumental), 2nd track and 'always crashing into the same car'. However, the weird beeping on the 3rd track annoyed me. Some of these tracks will definitely be added to my regular playlists. This album would have easily been 5 stars if side 2 were different.

this was cool!! definitely not what i expected from a Bowie album but good nonetheless. it was basically instrumental which makes me wonder if it came from using tracks that didn’t make it onto other albums and worked better without any vocals.

As a Bowie fan, I’m embarrassed it’s taken me this long to actually listen to Low in full. I came in with partial familiarity thanks to Philip Glass’s Low Symphony, which I’ve loved for years, so I knew the melodies in a very different, orchestral form. But hearing Bowie’s original was a surprise in the best way. This isn’t the glam swagger of Ziggy Stardust or the soul of Young Americans. It’s chilled, atmospheric, and oddly weightless, more like a Brian Eno album that just happens to have Bowie singing on a few tracks. The instrumentals on the 2nd half in particular feel like you’re drifting through some strange, beautiful space station in the late ’70s. For an artist so associated with reinvention, Low still manages to feel unexpected. It’s understated but hypnotic, with a mood that lingers long after it ends. A strange, serene gem in Bowie’s catalog.

One of bowies most eclectic.

The second half is on a whole 'nother planet

Probably my favorite of the Eno-Bowie albums. But more so when looking at the album as a whole, in all its colours, strange directions, and interesting segways. When it comes to standalone songs, there are few that I actually return to - 'Sound and Vision' being the obvious one. It's one of Bowie's best songs, that super fun bass, playful lead guitar line, wave of synths that come in during that intro, and Bowie's very lowkey vocals make for one hell of a pop-rock song that feels like a party in a little, well-lit apartment room in the middle of the night (the 'night' being the rest of the album, cause it gets DARK). I also really like 'Be My Wife', it's just super catchy and has some of the best guitar playing here. But when I say the album as a whole, I do mean that Eno-touched production, where every instrument feels like a living creature, something he did very well on his solo albums 'Before and After Science' and especially 'Another Green World'. The guitar and bass are paramount in the mix, but you have some other odd, standout moments, like that panning SAW in 'Breaking Glass' or that harmonica on 'A New Career in a New Town'. This one song, and a good chunk of this album's vibe, reminds me of the DKC2 soundtrack (lol). And in typical Eno fashion, this thing goes full ambient and instrumental in its closing tracks with songs like 'Weeping Wall' and 'Subterraneans' sounding like they're from two decades in the future with those breathtaking pads and chord progressions. I think I mentioned Eno here more than Bowie (even though Eno isn't even the main producer on this album, it's Tony Visconti), because I'd say it's his influence that's the most clear in the music here, it doesn't sound like many Bowie albums that came before this. It is Eno and Tony's album as much as it is Bowie's at the end of the day.

Rica zona desconocida. Me gustó lo moderno que es para ser del 77. Segunda escucha asegurada. Nota: 3.9

interesante este bowie. Después hay gente que se queja de los discos tranquilos de los monos!!!

The good tracks are some of Bowie’s best. As with Heroes, I’m not too fussed about the ambient tracks towards the end. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust is still the greatest David Bowie album.

Nice and chilled

4.1 I liked it

197/1089 - Kind of like a happier and more electronic version of The Idiot. It seemed somewhat unfinished to me. I would have liked if the songs on Side A were longer. It also seemed more like a half-Bowie half-Eno album. Pretty alright and I may warm up to it over time.

I love Bowie. I forgot how good the B side tracks are on this one.

Love the songs. The instrumentals are great but less repeat value.

Apparently this is one of the first post rock records, which is damn cool. I expect to get more into it in the future.

Felt like a bunch of b-sides that turned out to be one awesome flow of an album.

Bowie deserves all the fame he has, INSTRUMENTATIONS ARE CRAZY

Stranissimo, ma bello

Pop rock with a little edge to it. Bowie's distinctive voice works well over the music. Some solid guitar playing and riffs. Rhythms vary across rock, pop, punk, and even a little disco (it is from 1977 after all). Some ambient effects, I assume from synths, which are definitely a prominent instrument on this album. A few mostly instrumental tracks too in that ambient electronic style.

Listening again after a number of years, I have to say this is quite enjoyable. Certainly a much different direction than the rocknrolla Ziggy years and the TWD, a signpost for the new and improved David. Side One is a sorta peppy pop album; Side Two will make you question what planet you're on. 3 stars? 4? Probably in between, but I'll go 4. I'm feeling good today.

This was very vibey and kinda felt like it should be the soundtrack for a film. Interesting album from Bowie!

A pretty good record. This is one of Bowie’s most revered records. While I do respect it’s ingenuity and originality I find the first half to be inferior to Heroes, however I find the second ambient half of the record to be amazing. 4/5.

3.5 stars

A Bowie blind spot for me, I’ll add it to the rotation. The first half of the album doesn’t meat with the second half, but I like them both separately. From a 70s Bowie rock album to a like Werner Herzog film score.

Great start, went slightly weird in 2nd half but still good

Never heard this one

I wasn't ready for this. I didn't realize it was conceptualized at least partly as a film score so I had to listen a second time with that in mind so I could understand it better. The film score stuff is beautiful and haunting and interesting. I like the songs in the front half too. I will be listening to this again.

A Bowie album I don't love, but that is actually quite good. 4 *'s.

Asfett. Skitbra nästan jämt! Når inte hela vägen till en femma av anledningar jag inte kan förklara eller förstå mig på. Femma i hjärtat.

4.5/5. Brian Eno really brought the best out in Bowie.

Again didn’t appreciate Bowie until he died.

I guess this is a situational listening experience. I listened to this while driving on a quiet, dark highway and it was a momentarily hypnotic experience. Lying on a sunny beach, there would hardly have been an album nearly as impressive.

David appears to be a man of very few words on this record. Instead he lets the music drift and flow, very much in the style of Brian Eno perhaps. Mostly always pleasant all the way through, but the ceiling for ambient music is only so high. 8/10

♫ Listening to "Sound and Vision" by David Bowie (Low (2017 Remaster), 1977) ♫ I enjoyed it, but I prefer Bowie's other works to this.

4- Stars (10/15)

This is one that grew on me. It's the only Bowie album I actually like.

I know it’s a good album. I probably need to listen to it a few times to truly “get it.”

my advice is to listen to this slightly tipsy while in a record store looking at vinyls you cannot afford

This is a great album, but I wouldn't put it in my to 5 Bowie records. I would argue that this isn't even the best of the "Berlin Trilogy" and say "Heroes" is actually the best of the 3. It's still a great album though with some absolute bops in the first half ("Sound and Vision" is one of the most ear worms of a songs I think I've every heard from Bowie). Not quite a 5/5, so I'll give it a solid 4

Gorgeous soundscapes and really cool experimental vibes. Bowie was the worst part.

Bowie is exceptional, so even his "weaker" albums are amazing

I really love this album. You wouldn’t want to play the second half at a party but it’s such good mood music. Bowie/Eno go together like PB&J.

Easy listening, would listen again

Such a cool unique Bowie album. Love this one. Feel like it could be the soundtrack to a Bowie video game

Oh i dig this one

This album is sonically groundbreaking, but the fractured songs on the first half of the record are somewhat uneven. Tracks like "Breaking Glass" and "Always Crashing In The Same Car" are stunning in their originality but others like "What In The World" are disjointed experiments don't always gel. Bowie's decision to devote the second half of the album to moody, mostly wordless instrumentals is a gamble that largely works. What's remarkable about these tracks is that they still have the imprint of Bowie's personality even though his literal voice is mostly absent.

front half is better than the last half. Not my favorite album of his.

Around the time of Earthling, David Bowie played 4 small club shows on the east coast of the US and I somehow found my way into the Boston gig. The man who plays stadiums in a 2,000-person club. I went with my friend Alyssa and Low is her favorite David Bowie album. I picked it up around that time and went "eh". I knew of Brian Eno as an ambient pioneer and working with U2, so I was honestly expecting a whole album of side 2. Haven't really listened to it since. Now that I know Brian Eno from Roxy Music as well, I totally get side 1 now. 4 lads from Manchester formed a band called Warsaw inspired by Warszawa, but since that name wasn't dire enough, they changed it to Joy Division. This is a great album, but I think the legend precedes it a bit.

While I absolutely love Bowie, and think that "Sound and Vision" is one of the greatest songs he's ever made, the ambient back half of this album supplants the first half. HOWEVER, I think it’s something that’s more obvious and highlighted in contemporary music consumption. As a streamed album, or even on CD, you lose the fact that the ambient stuff is clearly the B-Side of the record originally produced for vinyl and compartmentalizes the two halves. For some reason, that let me appreciate the instrumental, ambient half much more. And if you didn’t like any of the ambient stuff, you never flip the record, and just stick with the A-side bangers. But how can you NOT love “A New Career in a New Town”? That and “Sound and Vision” are sooo fucking good.

Not my favourite Bowie album but it does have several outstanding tracks on it.

People call this a groundbreaking album, but perhaps I'm just not seeing it. Breaking glass is too short, and there's just not enough Bowie, as the entire second half is mostly instrumental. I am liking it a bit more on my second listen, so I may have to grow into it.

I don't think bowie albums can suffer too hard from a lack of Big Bangers actually. This is super coherent, lets the music do the talking. At the cost of interesting melodies? Maybe. Is that such a bad thing? Maybe. But then the tracks with no vocals at all are possibly my favourites here. And i love bowies voice so that's a feat. Everyone say thank-you Brian Eno ig. Having read about it before hearing it I was worried going in that this would be too much arty farty nonsense. It isn't. Like at all. If anything it ought to be weirder. Ah no wait it's getting arty and weird now Theres a fair chance that if I'd never heard of david bowie and brian eno I'd be like what's this shit. But I have. And it's hard to work round that. I'm enjoying it. Weeping Wall is some sonic bath. Feel like I'm at a spa.

Don't think I've listened to this Bowie album before but I really enjoyed it.

Og prototypical punk rock album. Great drums great bass and upbeat rhythm throughout.

4 star.

Love David Bowie, love Ambient, this album is for me, I love everything about this album just misses that connection for me

Very good eclectic mix from Bowie.

I enjoyed it, i especially liked the last track.

Superb

Good album with some of my favourite Bowie songs on it, I'm not a stan so it's still a 4 star from me. Would give 3.5 if I could.

Cold tbf, enjoyed the ambient

The first half of this one deceived me. I didn't have a lot of context about David Bowie as a person going into this one but I could tell this was a tumultuous time for him and his creative process. That being said, the second half of this is different and incredible. While I can't see myself revisiting this whole ride, I'll definitely have the back half as something to return to.

The randomizer graced us with back-to-back Bowie albums, which had me less than enthused for today considering I didn’t love the last one. This was a lot different. I was surprised to really enjoy the A side, which had some legitimately great songs. The B side was a complete vibe shift and I would enjoy it under a different setting, but it kinda makes no sense while attached to what the album had previously going on. Completely jarring, and the only thing that takes it down to a 4 instead of a 5.

Bowie does two sides really well: the all gas no brakes first half, and the slower, provocative, soundscapey second half. There is no transition between the two. What context calls for an album sequenced like this? .....I don't have an answer. I'll instead choose to see it as two very different but delicious cakes, and in that sense this is an excellent music experience. Highlights: Sound and Vision, Subterraneans

Classic

Lowkey oversett den her litt. Ganske bra

This was a weird one. Surprisingly little Bowie vocals for one of his albums, but his instrumental work is very interesting. Much more ambient and less structured than you would expect, but definitely worth a listen for how different it is. Top tracks: Speed of Life, Be My Wife, Subterraneans

hell yeah. love the last songs. prefer the songs that are mainly instrumentals.

I have not listened to much Bowie, and I'm excited for that to change. I'm familiar with his hits, but have never given his albums a full listen. This was good, didn't initially grab me, but I didn't expect it to. We listened to this on a roadtrip, and I actually fell asleep during the orchestral last portion of the album...which is a good thing, not a negative! It was lovely. I'm giving this a 4 for now so I can spend a bit more time listening to it.

If this 1001 albums has taught me anything it’s that Bowie rocks

Nothing stands out but an enjoyable tail end.

Another trendsetting album from Bowie. You could never identify him with any particular musical niche. He was forever changing it up. Bringing in Brian Eno and Toni Visconti was just genius.

Four stars just for sound and vision, loved the first 2/3 of it. Kinda lost me a bit toward the end

i don't know how this album went under my radar as someone who really enjoys Bowie, very well crafted album, artistry is as always top notch, also it felt like listening to two different albums due to its structure

not much stood out to me but it also feels unfair to give this a low rating. it's very funky!

Very good and innovative

Album was decent for an iconic artist!

the real order of bowie albums the generator gave me : aladdin sane -> station to station -> low. probably will get heroes for my next one. and this is really good. although i still thinks that ziggy is better. 4/5

Two completely different sides that both rule in different ways. Eno + industrial.

Coolt sound ju!

I'm sticking with my usual rating for this high 4-star. "Speed of Life", "Sound and Vision", and "Be My Wife" are all f'n aces with me. "Always Crashing" and "Breaking Glass" are not far behind. The only track on side two I really get into is "Warszawa" maybe to a lesser extent "Weeping Wall". The closer however sounds nice, but maybe too trance like for me. 8.8 ★★★★

This has always been a weird album for me, because although I like Bowie a lot, it's not my preferred style of Bowie and probably my least favorite of the Berlin trilogy. It's also one of those albums where my appreciation of it sort of outweighs my enjoyment of it. If I were solely grading it on impact, influence, and importance, it'd be an easy 5, but if I totally ignored that, it's much lower (no pun intended). The first side has always been a bit easier for me to grab onto, and I do think songs like "Sound And Vision", "Always Crashing the Same Car" and "Breaking Glass" are pretty cool. The second side is a bit tougher for me, but I do think it's pretty, if not totally my thing. 4 stars.

Bowie + Eno = <3. Some tracks are easy to listen to and some are like looking at a painting of something miserable and sad. It's weird, poetic, sad, desperate and worth a 1000 listens.

This was an interesting listen, so much so that I want to listen again right away. The first half of the album was very drum heavy and punky and then it descended into the depths of chill synth-wave instrumentalism. Very cool and what a unique turn to take.

eerie, düster, melancholisch faves: Sound and Vision, Subterraneans

David Bowie's Low is a great record, no questions about it, but I like the front half, but *love* everything from "A New Career in a New Town" and beyond. I enjoy a good experiment and will generally laud praise on musicians who experiment *well*. The krautrock/ambient half of the album is definitely a successful experiment. I especially love that Bowie gets in touch this aspect of his "spaceman" persona; and the variety of sounds and rhythms prove Bowie's capability with electronic interfaces. On the first half, however, doesn't quite connect with me. This album does subtly feel like Bowie getting sober, and to some degree, it feels uncomfortable, as if you, the listener, are going through the same uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. If the nervous, jittery plastic funk of Station to Station was Bowie at his most cold and disassociated, the first half of Low feels like he's uncomfortably, perhaps self-consciously, trying to find his voice again. There's a tension in these songs, that while interesting, causes me to want to spend less time with them. That said, I'd be lying if I said I've never caught myself humming "Sound and Vision". Highlights: The whole second half, from "A New Career in a New Town" onward.

First half is brilliant. Pure Bowie genius. Second half goes strange but not super interesting - too ambient maybe? Doesn't really fit. Sound & Vision possibly my fav Bowie song though.

I don't connect with this one as much as his other stuff, still it's worth a listen Will I listen to again: 50%

Very chill. Not like any other David Bowie album I've listened to. No soaring hits or catchy melodies, but mostly filled soundscapes that are great to relax to.

Interesting album that sounds very retrofuturistic due to the abundance of synths and processed drums on top of rock backing tracks. Just like Heroes the second half is moody, ambient tracks that aren't my cup of tea but the first half is great. Sound and Vision is the standout track, although the opening instrumental Speed of Life is also fantastic.

Musique prétentieuse sans prétention. Un album qui rejette toutes les conventions jusqu'au point où on se demande "y savent-tu c'qui font?". Y'as-tu vraiment du monde qui aime ça? 4.25 étoiles

Do I have to buy the DLC to listen to his voice more or?

Better than Heroes. I think Lodger is my favorite in this trilogy (bout would need to revisit it). This album is a mood, and one that I’m not always in. I gave Heroes a 3, and this was better than that, so I guess a 4? Really a 3.5 but I’ll give it the ol’ Bowie bump.

Fav: Always Crashing In The Same Car Least Fav: Subterraneans Sound And Vision was my first Bowie song so I’m def nostalgic towards it, and I think the first half is consistently good. I do think this has the same issue as Heroes where the ambient half, whilst still good, isn’t on the same level as the first half

A surprise package for me. Side A gave me what I expected, highlight being Sound and Vision. Didn't expect Side B but did enjoy it, especially Warszawa.

Not heard many songs from this album, I really enjoyed the instrumental only tracks

Lear drug use on this album lol that’s sound and vision song was amazing tho

Sound & Vision sounds like a song from Bob’s Burgers.

David Bowie made a great art rock classic? What's new?

Bery enjoyable

Yea hes pretty good at music

I have to admit, I don't know this album nearly as well as I should, especially considering how much I love both Bowie and Eno. Breaking Glass has a great bassline. What in the World immediately went on my "Get Weird" playlist. The ambient 2nd half of the album is largely excellent.

Very chill, sounds like a movie tough

Hard to believe it's from 77, can hear past and future influences

It’s like a soundtrack for a lost film that no one will ever see, just haunting everyone. The synthesizers are so deeply incredible, the production is totally bottomed out on heroin, and Bowie is almost a ghost floating in and out. This one is gonna grow on me for sure. It’s so deeply 70s that it can be off putting at first but the more I listen the more I love it.

A really solid album from Bowie's Berlin trilogy. Special highlights to "Sound and Vision" for being just a while vibe unto itself.

This is one hell of a bowie

I like Bowie. Cannot dislike any of his stuff, however the 7 minute space music of Subterrarreans at the end was kind of funny. Makes me feel like I’m in a planetarium.

Bowie is always hit/miss for me. This one worked. The last couple of instrumental songs could have not been included IMHO.

Start of the 2nd side is weird but first half is Chad.

One of the most insanely influential albums of all time.

It may not be a strong one in terms of songwriting - despite Sound and Vision - but it is a terrific record elwhen it comes to sound choices and atmosphere. Pairing Kraut with a little funky Bowie works extremely well. A synth lovers dream, and I am such, but not a songwriting exercise. Therefore only a very good four...

I struggle a bit with this album and always have, ever since I first listened in the mid 80s. I can appreciate it in context of the time in his career and location of recording. It's an unconventional record and it's not always accessible though. What I like I really like but it's not an easy listen for me.

just not a fan

I liked the minecraft music at the end. 4/5

Experimental sounds that I can just sit down and listen to the whole day. Don't understand how some people here say this is boring, to me, it's the total opposite, unique and never a dull moment.

För e Potenzielli Wälreuumreis secher praktisch. Loschtigerwiis werds albom bi jedem mol Lose besser. Zerscht hani eifach ke loscht gha neui musig usezueche ond de hani halt nomol agfange ond jetzt chani fascht nömme ufhöre.

Nearly 15 yrs ago I was in an indie band. My bandmates were obsessed with this album. Apart from Sound and Vision being a total banger, I didn't really get it. But taking an uninterrupted, considered listen, I do now. The way the record changes shape from beginning to end...the synth soundscapes...the bursts of typical Bowie melodic/pop genius amidst "futuristic" instrumentals. You can hear how certain touches like gated drums, etc, paved the way for popular production approaches in the 80s. I'll return to this one when the mood strikes, no doubt. 4/5

Dare I say my favorite Bowie album so far? I enjoyed a lot of the atmospheric instrumental moments.

Great album. You can hear the influence of this on Queens of the Stone Age for instance and countless other bands

Interesting, I never knew he did an album 😂 like this

I am glad for the impetus to listen to old Bowie! Some of the songs were really mind bending. I really enjoyed several listens through.

Very nice

Truthfully I was not excited for a David Bowie album today, as my mood wasn't feeling conducive to his brand of eclectic and bombastic pop/rock sound. So imagine my surprise when I found this album to be an unforeseen (to me) blend of Bowie's classic sound, and ambient/electronic sounds that give off a very haunting vibe. Coming off of hard drugs and collaborating with Brian Eno in France will do that to a man, I guess.

I think I wrote off Bowie because Ziggy didn’t do it for me but this was a fun ambient experience. Listened twice back to back. Think I need to change my scoring system as a result.

Definitely in contention at the top of my list of favorite Bowie albums. Ziggy Stardust and Hunky Dory will never be topped for me, but I find myself coming back to this album almost as frequently as those two.

I’ve enjoyed every Bowie album on the list so far. Even not being my favorites still puts it above so many on this list.

Back half gets a little weird, but it’s Bowie. Still a solid album. 4 stars.

A side is SOOOOO good. Like insanely good. B side really just turns into a lot ominous/ambient sounds. Doesn't really hate the way I want it to especially after comnig off of such a Hot A side. But - that's ok. He's an absolute legend and this rocks. 4 starmans on this one. *a quick wikipedia lookup immediately used the word ambiant and i feel so validated for no reason.

This took multiple listens to get into. This isn’t the David Bowie I was familiar with on Ziggy Stardust and it’s kinda hard to believe that these albums are only a couple of years apart. Production on this record is great. Bass is jumping and grooving. Drums sound explosive. Synths hold up to this day. If all bajillion of the records Bowie has on this list are this high-quality, then I’m game for them. Highlights: speed of Life, Breaking Glass, Sound and Vision, always crashing in the same car, be my wife, warszawa, subterraneans Stinkers: none really - weeping wall was my least favorite though. Feeling strong 4/5. Couple more listens and this might be a 5/5 too. Mack rating prediction: 5/5

Honestly thought I'd like it a bit more then I did. Berlin Trilogy era Bowie? Art Rock? Experiments with Electronica? Honestly, going in I thought it would be a slam dunk. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's a great album and I'm glad I heard it, and I'd probably fall in love on listen 6, but on listen 1? 4.

Until today, I thought this albmu was bad. That changed of ciurse for the first time I enjoyed the instrumental songs of the second half. Still not the greatest album of bowie for me, and probably the only one without a clear masterpiece. With all that said even a just good album of bowie is about an 8/10

The instrumentals were very beautiful.

Spacey, poppy and and easy to catch on to. Background music for sure.

Nice album to wake up with. Nice beats
