Reviews (page 11 of 12)
At the risk of offending my father: 2 stars. Doesn't appeal to me.
Too country. One good hit.
The Band invented the concept of playing music in a group back in the 1960s, where previously only solo artists had existed. The Band is called The Band because at the time they were the only band. Their debut album "The Album" featured the songs, including the singles and the b-sides. Jokes aside, these names would be quite fitting for this music, as it's perfectly inoffensive but bland and uninteresting.
It's not bad just wasn't feelin it
It takes quite some confidence to call yourselves "The Band". Especially when you make an album so bland
Finally found The Weight
Love The Weight but so much of the rest is kinda annoying voice. Maybe I'm just grumpy but just slipped down from a 3 for me given I only liked the one song I knew.
I eat lamb chops for breakfast and bees for lunch.
AI Nonce Music From Big Pink In that order.
Nothing here for me.
I know, I'm a Philistine. This would be a higher rating, but I really dislike the strangled wail that makes up 2/3 of the vocals.
“The Weight” is a classic - how many movies have had their happy ending set to this song? But the rest of this felt very monotonous (in the “monotone” sense more than the “long and tedious” sense). If you’re going to be THE Band, I need you to do more. The other standout for me would be "I Shall Be Released", but the Neil Young-esque falsetto vocals don't work for me here. For the most part, this is solid (if totally ignorable) background music.
I might've just been in the wrong mood but I found this album really unbearable. The first song is this 5 minute dirge and it completely ruins the rest of the album for me
Acknowledged classic album, but I honestly find 90% of The Band's songs a little grating due to the vocals and heavy barroom piano.
Now I've heard the album The Single came from
Take a Load Off is good the rest not so much
A little boring. Produced some songs that were absolute bangers of covers but meh.
Another The Band album, another period piece from its era. Here we have yet another case where whatever historical or musical importance the album carries has failed to translate to the modern day. Bottom line: it's acceptable, and irrelevant. Would give it a 3 on that basis, but will give 2 to offset high votes.
I can see demons enjoying this garbage. 1.5/5
Little bit boring
I’m a sucker for The Wheel but all I want now is to watch Ab Fab and have Julie Driscoll remind me how This Wheel’s on Fire is supposed to sound.
Not great at all...
The Band is a band I have wanted to dig into for some time as I have always heard great things about their music and band as they stand as somewhat of an underrated gem of their time. While I initially thought I'd be hearing their self titled album The Band by The Band, The Band's first album was actually Music from Big Pink, a much more laid back and calm Folk Rock album. The writing and instrumentation really didn't pop as much as I had hoped for a 60s Folk Rock album and instead felt like lukewarm and plain if you will. I just didn't find a whole lot to latch onto despite the fact that the music is well put together. I was quite underwhelmed here and I really hope their self titled can reel me back in as this was quite stale to me.
I love the weight only
Just bad. From the mastering to the music itself. Couldn't get myself to enjoy the melody and the music sounded flat. Not my thing.
Like a big, soft pillow. Zzzzzzz.
Nah. Dull.
Pretty dull
2/5 Whiney voices but cool rhythms at times
Found this one fine, but not really better than that. There were some good songs while others really dragged. I think it was just a little too somber on the whole for my liking. I might put this on if I wanted to take a nap or have something calm going in the background. Otherwise I don't think it really does much for me. Overall: 2.4/5
The Band is another group whose achievements and place in history I respect, even if I'm not terribly interested in listening to their music. I know "The Weight," of course, but I'd probably change the station if it came on the radio. That goes double for "I Shall Be Released." Otherwise this is...fine.
I can’t even remember this from a few hours ago. Think this says it all
eh no
Not feeling this very much, they seem to be solid musicians but I just don’t enjoy most of this. The weight, chest fever, and long black veil were standouts but I could do without the rest.
It's ok. Not really my kind of music.
i forgot what this album sounded like 2 minutes after it ended
Music by The Bland has never reached me more than one or two songs. This is not bad music, but just boring to me.
Grudging points for “The Weight” because it’s just such a part of my musical landscape growing up. One of those ubiquitous 70’s rock tunes. The rest, unsurprisingly, was technically proficient with a sound that does nothing for me at best. At worst, I want it to end. Two stars
Ikkje så nice
p150. 1968. 2 stars. Average band with average songs plays as backing group for Dylan and gets famous. Not much to like here - mostly rock/folk noodling with no tunes, thin whiny vocals, and they manage to fek up all of the Dylan contributions. Saved from 1 star by "The Weight".
Another 60s album, just not into it. There are some nice blues elements, but the mix of rock, folk and country just doesn't please my sound holes. 2.
Not bad but I just don't really like the singing...certainly not for a full album but that's a matter of personal tatste...
couple good ones
Sounds like Van the Man, not in a bad way
The Band? More like they can go pound sand. Ok, the album wasn't bad, but kinda bland. It didn't make me feel that grand.
Meh
ugh. the trend when male vocalists had to sound like they are in agony to have gravitas. Fortunately, the vocals are drowned out by the keys, so there is that.
This is not what it has been hyped up to be.
Overrated
Still the best band name
A couple of the songs weren't bad, but what is with this list and shoving singers that can't sing at us?
I have a hard time finding anything to care about here. It bugs me way more than it should that the vocals are always, yet inconsistently off with each other. Sounds like they're singing karaoke but the bouncing ball over the lyrics broke.
Nah. Reminded me of being high on lousy hash as a teen.
It's pretty decent vibes, but none of the songs really go further than that for me.
My dad has informed me that stoners in the 60s were absolutely vibing to this and I should probably smoke a joint before listening. I understand that some people probably enjoy this. I was bored and thinking about how glad I was that we left this stuff in the 60s.
I hate doing this to such a respected album in the Canon, but I have never really been able to figure out why it gets the praise it does. If you listen to their work with Bob Dylan I feel like that is proof they are amazing in collabs but I don't think they are anything special on their own. The album is too long and in my opinion, lacks variety.
Ok, so clearly at this point EVERYTHING or almost everything is a JoJo reference, here we have another (No. 2 to be precise). This album gets me in a mood where I feel I’m in a old bar and it’s late at nite. I’m drowning my sorrows in a bottle and I’m ready to go home and sleep all by myself
I didn’t expect to like this…and I didn’t. Having said that, I don’t mind “The Weight” & “This Wheel’s On Fire”. Funnily enough, I liked the first outtake song after the regular album just about more than all the other songs! “Yazoo Street Scandal” It’s definitely better than Springsteen.
The last song being I shall be released is fitting because I was released from listening to mid after it.
I know I’m supposed to like The Band but I’m very bored by this. Yawn … now I’m reminded why I’ve never gotten into these guys after being exposed to them over and over through the years. Boring.
I appreciate the significance, still don’t like it. Despite revisiting it every few years to check if I’m missing something.
otro que no me convenció, aunque es verdad lo escuche muy por arriba
Buen estilo hippie pero muy apagado para mi 5.3/10
I know people love these guys, but I had a hard time connecting with this one.
I just don’t get it. What is all the hullabaloo about this band? I know there is supposed to be an amazing documentary about one of their performances, but other than that…meh.
I want to like this more than I do. "The Weight" is timeless though.
Forgettable
This just didn’t do anything for me. Not having a lot of patience for this sort of thing today, although I could certainly find things to like about it on another day. 2-3
These guys are great at playing instruments but not at writing songs. If you’ve heard one song by them, you’ve heard them all.
why does the lead vocalist sound on the verge of tears??? I like The Weight but otherwise, meh.
Sleeper. 2/5
I can't stress how much most of this isn't doing a darn thing for me. I think a lot of it is the singing. I do appreciate The Weight as a classic rock song with a good blues groove. But the rest of the album has given me a headache. Oh hey a cover of Long Black Veil! That's a good song.
Apart from the weight, really bland.
Not really my thing. Fave song: Chest Fever
It’s okay.
didn't do much for me, kinda bland ngl
Finally found the font of middle-aged man songs from my youth
It's too funeral like to me.
The Weight is such a great song, but the rest was very mid.
Irony of how hard this album is carried by the Weight
It was alright
I'm sorry, but this is just not my kind of music. Well made though. 41/100
Okay but not nliw my socks off.
I liked Chest Fever but wasn’t a fan of the rest
Was fine.
The songs on this album mostly consist of rambling melodies over nondescript chords, gussied up with fake Americana. Only "In A Station" and "Chest Fever" provide any spark of surprise.
I've been listening to music all of my life, and of course I've heard The Band. I've never listened to The Band except for what I've heard in the background. I was never a fan. I listened to this record - for a few turns on each song... couldn't get past the fourth or fifth. Not The Band for me.
I shall be released . . . from listening to this dogshit album. One bonus star for that one song that has the organ bit that's been used in a lot of movies.
This is one of those bands I never got.
It’s a forgettable listen that didn’t leave a lasting impression.
Het is voornamelijk vrolijke muziek, weinig op aan te merken, maar ook niet speciaal.. de rustige nummers vind ik wat tragisch en voel er weinig bij.
It's not for me
I understand it was influential, but this was pretty uninteresting outside of 1 song.
Alright rock I suppose, but much slower music than I expected. Even one song I was already familiar with didn't save that I got voted with the album, ready for it to end
Kind of irritating to listen to.
Meh
Meh
I expected to like this, and I just kind of don't. It's almost frustrating, like I can't really articulate why. I think I'm finding out that the style of blues rock that runs through this isn't really my thing. That being said, I honestly can't say its bad per say. I like a lot of the lyrics across this, and I see the appeal of these songs. Despite this, the parts of this album that appeal most to me are the little detours, the more folk or country moments mostly work for me, but that also may have something to do with the greasy Bob Dylan fingerprints that seem to be all over these songs in particular. Of the bluesy-er songs here, I will say I do like Chest Fever quite a bit, and I think the New Orleans blues passage comes out of no where, but really works. Regardless, this whole thing has moments, but it doesn't really work for me as a whole.
Ok but nothing special 2.5/5
I was mostly asleep on the plane so I probably missed a bunch I'm sorry The Band
Some of it is quite pleasant but broadly… what’s the point?
I can’t think of many highlights to this album. It was a bit bland if I am being honest. For me not even worth keeping in the library as I will probably not listen to this again before I die..
Pretty much what I expect from musicians who call their band “The Band”.
Meh except for “The Weight”.
Not my bag
Varied songs. Not bad.
More of a folksy/root sound that I usually enjoy, however I didn't have any real highlights on the album. Love the Bob Dylan association. 2.5/5
Very of it's time sixties jam rock. Did nothing for me, very dull.
Not a fan. I've heard The Weight before, but it was a cover by Travis. I prefer that to the original.
This was...fine. it was super diverse which was cool. The singer's voice got on my nerves a few times (primarily in "I Shall Be Released") This wasn't bad, but not something I probably return to. Not terrible tho. Actual rating is a 2.5. Liked Songs: "Tears Of Rage" , "To Kingdom Come" , "Caledonia Mission" , "Chest Fever"
Competent but not for me. 2.5
Among the more shameful confessions I have about music is that I first listened to "The Weight" through a cover by Weezer. In retrospect it's an admittedly alright cover and stands out within their discography for being one of the non-Cuomo vocal tracks, though I can't fault myself for being uninterested in the original because of it. The more generic "country pop" stylings from Weezer don't do the The Band's vision of the song any favours. Oh me fockign gorsh. I was listening to this thing on shuffle the whole time. I was halfway through this album and now I suddenly have no idea what I'm talking about. Yes, I am including this unnecessary rambling in my review. Fuck you. Anyways, enough about shitty fucking Weezer. The sound of this album is distinctive and ambitious. I can respect it on those grounds, though I can't really say that it's "my thing". Some of these tracks are way too busy for their own good, such as on "We Can Talk". I'm split down the middle on the instrumentals and Bob Dylan's vocal performances because of this. It's difficult to figure out what this album is doing right when everything is demanding an equal level of attention from me. It's because of this that I was more favourable to the straight-laced, chill tracks such as "Long Black Veil" and "In a Station". There's a bit of a lo-fi streak to many of the sounds on this album, which is interesting. Sometimes it works like with the electric tones in the back of "This Wheels' on Fire" though most of the time I'm pretty unmoved, such as with the organs on "Chest Fever". I like lo-fi when it adds a muffled, smudged sound to the percussion and backing instruments of a song, though I generally don't like when it's added to the lead instruments, as it adds a sharp, abrasive quality to the sound. The only time where the "sharp" approach has worked for me was with Pinkert- uhhhh ermm uh. Never mind. "I Shall Be Released" is a wonderful song and an excellent album closer. I've heard this song somewhere before, but I'm not sure from where. That fact honestly adds more to the song. It's familiar to me in a cosmic, human way.
Kind of just feels like unremarkable classic rock.
One good song
Eh nothing super special, but not awful either
Was okay. I like a lost of classic rock but I struggled to really engage with this. Couple of good tracks but overall quite forgettable
Some strong songs. Didn’t even realize this was the album with the iconic song “The Weight” and “Chest Fever”. Other songs just annoyed me.
This album was a pill for me. I think if I listened to it because someone else was playing it (rather than of my own volition) I would have enjoyed it more. Regardless, the album feels like riding in a truck with a grandpa. Favorite songs: - Chest Fever - Lonesome Suzie
Oof. Half way through but I find it grating. Like The Weight is good but let’s see what the rest of the album does. Thank goodness for Chest Fever.
It was fine
I can't really remember it so it can't have been that good...
beh
Listen again: no Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: Chest Fever Well after the last album (Lightning Bolt), this is literally music to my ears hahaha. Soothing for sure, but first song isn’t something I’d usually go for. But damn! First songs are nothing exciting, but then “The Weight”, and I didn’t realize they did this song OR that they’re Canadian! Gotta love wiki for all the cool details. After that song, pretty lame, until Chest Fever-those are some Dire Straights vibes at first! Then he starts to sing and it’s all downhill. The music is great, the singer is not. Actual potential if they had a different singer.
Aside from a couple tracks, this was very meh. I wish Helm had vocals on more tracks, his twang was great on The Weight.
While i did perk up a bit after realizing The Band played with Dylan on the Basement Tapes, it didn't overcome the fact that The Band is mostly bland. 2.5/5 rounded down to 2 as I expected more
I didn't even register this album playing
Not really my vibe. I liked a few songs ("Caledonia Mission", "Chest Fever" and "This Wheel's On Fire") but otherwise nothing stuck out to me in particular.
Meh, I wasn’t into it. The lead singer sounds like an old man straining to sing; gives very Jerry Garcia vibes. The cover of “Long Black Veil” does nothing to add to one of my favorite murder ballads. “The Weight” is obviously a classic. This is properly 1.5 stars for that song. I made it through the whole thing (ignoring extended extras), so I guess it gets a 2.
I don't especially like Bob Dylan, the Band have even less impact on me. Dull.
I've never had dementia so bad omg I'm creaming
Johnny Cash covered long black veil, if h hadn't it would have been a 1
First one in ages I've really dug, praise god
Folk-rock country is not my favorite kind of music.
There are some nice jams to be found on this album, but for me personally, this is nothing more than a bit of rock easy listening. The songs are nice as they're happening, but they aren't distinctly memorable. 'Chest Fever' was a highlight. It opens with a nice little keyboard jam and has a cool, slow, groovy riff. There's a cool keyboard solo that I enjoyed, before the cymbals crash and we're back into the guitar riff again. Best track on here. 'I Shall Be Released' slows things down that little bit more. The drums almost sound like they march through the song. It's a quiet, lovely ballad that closes the album really well. Overall, I just didn't really care too much about the jangly jamming and found it a bit boring in places.
There are some things I like about this album… I kinda like the general sound or vibe they’re going for… but maaannnn none of these dudes can sing. It’s like as bad as to be comical and almost secondhand embarrassing, which is crazy cuz they’re extremely accomplished, successful and presumably wealthy and im just a lil dude. And yet.
I don’t like The Band.
Not really my thing
I had given a surprisingly good review to the Band’s self-titled second album, but this is more like the Band that I remember: slow & whiny. “The Weight” is a good song, but nothing else on here ever gets cookin’.
This was quite generic and bland, didn't grab my attention at all except just enough to decide I dislike the singer's voice
The Band, formed as Hawks in Ontario, were famous for being the ensemble that toured with Bob Dylan in 1966, when he went "electric." There is something about them that I don't enjoy, it could be the vocalists. Although "Caledonia Mission" is more engaging and gritty and "The Weight" is iconic, but I must admit that in this case cover versions improve the original every time. "We Can Talk" sounds pretty good with the three vocalists on the track, "Long Black Veil" is an old country song updated with tuba and organ. Chest Fever attempts an Iron Butterfly inspired funereal distorted organ but then morphs into a minimal funk, the vocals are buried in the mix, but everything just sounds muddy on this track. "Lonesome Suzy" has a lot of shaky falsetto but solid instrumentation. Perhaps my queer generation associates "This Wheel's On Fire" as the theme song of BBC's Absolutely Fabulous, an ironic look at the counter-culture selling their idealism for suburban comfort while still clinging to their youth and waning cultural credibility (of course that version was performed by Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity and is a bit more avant-garde and intense than the Band).
Two Band albums back-to-back? What are the chances! Definitely less cohesive than their self-titled. I feel like production was rushed and there's a lot of filler. The album's a little odd, that's for sure.
Meh
Self titled is 10x better. Honestly surprised how little I like this comparatively.
Sort of in one ear and out the other until I heard the one song everyone knows from this album. Not bad, but not that interesting to me either.
I've heard this record a lot because it's another one of Dad's favorites. Listening to it with fresh ears, it feels a bit uneven.
Sounds like the grateful dead but with precise non-noodling performances. I'm just not a fan of the vocal styles or the vibe, though I can recognize its a good record.
Seems more like a group of songs than an album. Some are great, some are just ok. Still, solid musicianship. Would give it 2.5 if I could.
it's...fine
Not a bad album, I didn't vibe with it except 1 song towards the end
It was super boring and did literally nothing for me. Nothing was bad or anything. It was just super boring.
I'm of the generation where I'm supposed to love this, but found it pretty boring.
This is not a genre or era I like, so I didn't enjoy it. Rating: 2
Songs: The Weight
"The Weight" is one of my favorite folk songs of all time, but it doesn't carry enough weight to help this album's rating. If you enjoy your drunk uncle playing a broken acoustic guitar for his annual Christmas Eve visit, you'll love this album. Favorite Song: "The Weight"
I was surprised that I knew a couple of tracks from this, but other than those there really wasn’t anything here that grabbed my attention. Just seemed like a lot of fillers. There’s no chance I listen to this again and I found it quite boring on the whole.
An underwhelming album. More organ does not equate to more quality. 2.4/5 -> 2/5
When they stray towards country, the music is atrocious (utterly predictable vocal lines, half-hearted musical arrangements). When they stick to rock, it's actually interesting, with a killer rhythm section. Unfortunately, there are a significant number of country tracks on this album, which really drags the final score down.
2+ Stars (6/15)
Dull. Staid. Brown. The Weight is a good song but this bores the tits off me.
Boooring.
It was fine. Something I might play in the kitchen while cooking to zone out to. Otherwise no real pull to listen to again.
Ok, but not really for me
Smooth and pleasant to listen to. Not my kind of genre to listen to daily but enjoyable in piecemeal.
Not a single sweat broken when thinking of that band name huh? Anyway, the songs were pretty generic. This is just a band like any other from the 60s. "A" Band, not "THE" Band.
Not for me. 1 recognizable song
Lite skeptisk. The weight är en förbaskat bra låt. Long black veil är en förbaskat bra cover. Men resten...
Decent old rock.
Didn’t really click for me. Might need another listen or two.Strange, because it is definitely my type of music
doesnt work for me that well. still enjoyed a few, but overall not catching me fully. 2.5/5.0
It was okay
Saai, voegt niets toe, nummers doen me niets.
Not much to say about it, just didn't like it. Favorite - To kingdom come Least Favorites - Lonesome Suzie, I shall be released, Tears of rage
Ordinary
A bit rockier and cool than a lot of other bands in the late 60s. Finding it ever more difficult to rate these sort of bands as we get through this list though, I think I've had my fill of influential proto-rock from the 60s. Nothing really stood out looking back, except that last song that sounded like the gingerbread man from Shrek was on vocals. It was fine but underwhelmingly so.
I'm sorry, you band of Brothers but I just cannot get into this funky groove of yours, so I'll give you a star for effort and a star for making some people happy I guess. 2 stars
I tried but just really struggled to get into this one. Not a fan.
Didn't really like this one unfortunately. Two notable tracks though: The Weight, Chest Fever
A mix of easy rock and country. It was okay but nothing really stood out.
I think it's a little arrogant that they call themselves THE band, as there are many, many bands in the world. Unless they're trying to trick purveyors of wine into giving them more wine whenever the crowd cries "more wine for the band", and the purveyors mistake "the" for "THE", so they ship off a crate of their cheapest product to these guys instead of giving it to the musicians that are *right in front* of them. I mean, other musicians are due their perks too, right? Why should these guys usurp those? Plus their music is kinda dull. Maybe someone should give them some more wine to liven things up. Although the cover art seems to indicate that perhaps they've had too much already. Maybe it's the wine that's the root of the problem. I mean, I like wine too, but don't think I'd go so far as to put a cup of it on my head while I'm playing the guitar. I'd use one of those caps with cupholders and a straw. But that would make it hard to look down at the strings to see which chord I'm playing. Maybe I'm just a lousy guitar player.
Pretty groovy, never really gave them a listen. A bit too 60’s for me to casually listen to. Don’t like their Long Black Veil.
I had coffee with Garth Hudson once. I realise The Band are a Big Deal and also HUGE influences on some of my faves like Counting Crows and Whiskeytown but this record just didn't resonate with me.
Mid time with this one, I know the song The Weight from all the 60s playlist I've listened too and always skip it. It is for sure from the era, something about the sound that strikes me as soft Rockish country bullshit, but just not good. This wasn't offensive to listen to but man it was just so boring and fuck it you know what the more I type this out the more I realise I did not enjoy it. 2/5
Meh
Can’t deal with it I had to stop after the first song
Really just one good song and the rest are meh
I did not care for this one. Based on the global reviews, I am an outlier but I guess I am just not a fan of the Americana folk style, though the soulful bits were nice.
It was…ok
Slightly too jazzy for my taste.
Found it annoying.
Might have been groundbreaking and spectacular at the time, but now I’m mostly bored. The Weight is an honorable exception, and the two following songs are also listenable. The rest I can do without
Wow that's disappointing. I get that the scattershot sound of this album probably helps it sound authentic for a lot of people, but this straight up does not sound good. The three singers clash and run into each other a ton, and the production is kind of a mess. There's some strong songs here, but I have serious trouble enjoying them. Best song: The Weight
This album really didn’t do it for me. So many midtempo bores, and the lyrics felt meaningless. Vocals weren’t great. By 1968 standards, this album lacks any real sort of experimentation. Pretty poorly recorded and produced. 2.7/5
Not sure why this The Band album was here. I preferred the self-titled album to this one and gave that one a 3. I was bored and annoyed most of the time. Even "This Wheel's on Fire" had no life.
Boring with maybe two interesting moments (one of them being Siouxie and The Banshees' cover which is not actually part of this album)
Oof, this was a hard one to get through. It's boring and irritating. I kept waiting for it to get better, but it never did. I knew "The Weight" going into this, and I've never liked their version of it. I've always preferred the Staple Singers' version. The album opens with kind of a bummer ... a sad Bob Dylan song (it's not a bad song, but it's an odd way to open an album) and it's one of the rare times I've wished Bob were singing instead. The voices of these guys are not good. The rest of the album never really changes much — it kind of plods along with the same slower, anemic sounding kind of songs. Well, until the last two tracks, which randomly become uptempo disco songs out of nowhere (they may be different, but they're not better). This album is like soulless soul. The music is boring and one note, the singing is terrible — it's like bad Neil Young karaoke. And the weird biblical allusions make it feel like you're stuck listening to a bad church band. The songs aren't terrible in other performers' hands. As noted, The Staple Singers' version of "The Weight" is a great song. And Chrissy Hyndes' cover of "I Shall Be Released" is very good. These guys probably should've stuck to writing for other people. 2/5
Not gonna lie, I have no idea what the hype is around this one. I know this album and band are acclaimed, this just sounded like regular old folk rock to me. Very little stuck out.
One of those albums that probably influenced a lot but on its own is nothing special.
I love the band but this is one of their weaker albums. Need more Levon Helm singing about the civil war and farming.
I can hear how influential this is and it kinda grooves sometimes. But I find the vocals a bit grating and overall it’s just not for me.
Easy Listening …
Accomplished musicians, but for me not an exciting album. I understand this was seen as quite influential in the years following its release, but it's not an album I'm likely to play in the future as it's not a genre I care for.
The weight's awesome. Don't remember the rest.
Could not get into this one.
For an album that is apparently really influential to rock, I don't hear it.
I officially hate The Band. I'll give them The Weight just because "Take a load off, Fanny," is kind of funny. Oh and the going rumor is that "Fanny" was a woman who slept with three members of The Band and gave John Belushi his lethal overdose? I no nothing about The Band and am surprised Bob Dylan made the cover artwork and they toured with Dylan before making this album. Still, this music doesn't do it for me. I was driving and it put me to sleep. A little later in the album it picks up a bit and switches from country to a more rock kind of sound - We Can Talk, Chest Fever, and This Wheel's on Fire all piqued my interest, but that's not enough to make me rate this album highly. 2 stars because I didn't hate everything but I hated more than I enjoyed.
I can appreciate that it's well performed and certainly well recorded but this is just not my bag at all. The hound dog vocals and village shuffle vibe of most tracks are tedious and relatively dull to me. I get that it was important/formative for many of the records I subsequently really enjoy but....not my thing.
More painfully dreary, slow 60s folk.
I found this pretty dull and repetitive and was quite surprised to see how well its received here.
I don't have any complaints, but there's also nothing about this I needed to hear. I will forget all about this album tomorrow.
The Weightiä laskematta aika joutavaa menoa.
Turns out "The Weight" isn't the only song by The Band that I never want to hear again in my life. I know folks see this as a seminal album, so I get that this belongs on the list, but I find it ponderous and boring.
I think there’s a reason a lot of bands from this era’s best albums are their “best ofs”
Ok
I wouldn't go as far to say this album was boring, but it was on the slower side. Aside from The Weight, I just can't picture remembering any of these tracks.
There is nothing special here. There is way better music out there.
‘To Kingdom Come’, ‘Caledonia Mission’, ‘The Weight’ and ‘Chest Fever’ are the genuinely good songs on this, songs that are actually engaging melodically and you will want to listen to from start to finish. The rest of the album kind of just plods along and you can pretty much skip it in my opinion. I’ve listened to it, so you don’t have to.
Quite boring or just not my jam
It was alright but sounded like a lot of the average music on here. Was a bit bored listening to it.
It was fine music, I know it’s influenced a load of artists but if I never hear it again my life won’t feel like it’s missing anything
never knew The Weight was The Band's song. otherwise, not really a fan. I wanted to like this, but I could barely get through a single song without switching to the next one. it just sounds so monotonous to me and it has some folk/country music influences which are both genres I often find intolerable
It was a good listen but wouldn't listen to it again. Felt very basic 60s-70s sound.
Tears of Rage, Chest Fever, and Lonesome Suzie are gorgeous songs, but everything else on this album dragged on forever. Very dull and forgettable
I was expecting more given the blend of genres. the country music aspect was over-dominant and the rambling lyrics aren't for me. Perhaps as a non american gen x I find the music inaccessible.
no no no no big no no thank you I don't care how is this even on this list
Die Musik auf diesem Album würde mir wohl kaum auffallen und in Erinnerung bleiben, wenn sie im Hintergrund irgendwo spielte.
Not my usual thing, Americana Roots Rock, but I did enjoy it and listened to it a few times today. Just OK. Probably won't pop it on again.
I listened to this last night - today I can’t remember a thing about it except that I’d heard one or two tracks before. Clearly forgettable
Black Crows in langsam und langweilig
just didnt care for it
The Weight is a rock classic. The album almost deserves a 5 based on that track alone. However the complete lack of any other memorable song on the album is a problem. I've already forgotten the other songs.
Not bad sort of American style rock. Can't really think of anything that stood out though other than their hit song "The Weight".
The general public (and critics) got caught up in the hype of the time, Dylan’s backup band, and the fact that these guys went out and rented a Big Pink house in the woods of upstate New York. IFor some unknown reason that sent this very SLOOOWW album over the top at the time. One good song ,The Wait (get it,) the rest of the album is literally folksy background music. I remember this album in the early 70s and it was long and boring then; hasn’t changed in 50 years. Over hyped then and still is. (2.0*s)
I sum this album up as "old feels." It's pretty bland and sounds like a continuation of basement tapes because it's a bit all over the place. Some boring noodling, a bit of jingly jangly, throw in some Americana and here we are. It's ok but nothing stands out.
Pretty good folky rock album. I liked the diverse use of keyboards and organs. Nothing really special but its a good collection of songs. The Weight is the only thing I recognized. I liked this much more than the majority of Bob Dylan I've listened to. 2.55 stars
Songs felt similar across this album.
Not a fan.
The first half of this album was strange and once again had that 70s thing where it sounds like it could be played at a renaissance fair. The second half of the album was a little more digestible. Fave: Caledonia Mission, The Weight (I already knew this song) Least: Tears of Rage, To Kingdom Come
Something something the weight? Ellers ikke superduper
Its a great sounding album, but i got really bored with it. The songs are just slow, and it has that slow horse riding tempo. Mixing wise its amazing, but I can't find much else that's good. Highlight obviously is The Weight. The rest... weightless.. (sorry. not sorry)
Couldn't get into this. Felt quite bland
Cover art right up my alley! It had me dreaming of psychedelic soundscapes (isn't the kid with the pot on his head holding a sitar?).....So the sludgy masculine classic rock blues deeply disappointed me. I feel like I've heard these songs a million times before-- maybe because so much music since has been derivative. The fact that this is the favourite album of self-proclaimed rapist and racist Eric Clapton doesn't exactly make me sympathetic towards it. The quality of the recording itself is excellent, though, very clear. Cool backing vocals and organ moments, especially Chest Fever. But all I see is a greying dad in a leather vest jangling these songs at a family friendly small-town festival, convinced it's the best music ever made.
A bit dated.
Not my type of music.
Eh
Not really my thing.
Quite bland
I found it boring.
I’ve discovered a fair bit of 60s rock and beat pop etc through this challenge so I was pretty keen for this one but it fell flat. Disappointed. Nothing really stuck with me after two listens and I can’t see much reason to go back. The overall sound was ok but never really turned into anything.
Didn’t like much
Meh.
Aside from the one single I knew, this album didn't having anything that really jumped out at me.
Doesn’t strike a bell. I don’t like or dislike.
Kinda boring
Nietszeggend achtergrondmuziekje, in de lijn van Hotel California
plays waaay different in the UK :)
Not for me.
Dos tres.
Not my fav, can be relaxing and nice to have in the background. On the wall? Probably not
The weight 5/5 The rest 2/5
Fairly bloated and instructed despite having the amazing “the weight” on it.
Fave songs: The Weight, Chest Fever, I Shall Be Released
Meh
Better than other albums by The Band, but I'd still only listen as background music. There's nothing about this album that grabs you. No stand-out tracks. I'm being generous with a 2 star.
Just didn't grab me like I hoped. I Shall Be Released is still one of my favorite songs ever, though.
Difficult to listen to
I don’t really “get” The Band. I understand how influential they are and how much they were respected in the industry but they’ve never done anything for me emotionally. I’ve listened to a bunch of their song and I’ve seen The Last Waltz. Still nothing. I enjoy “The Weight” and some of the instrumentation in other tracks. That’s about it. 2/5
it's fine. the weight is a classic but that's pretty much all you get here. not sure how this made the list... most of the songs sound the same and bro's yappin about the same thing with his weird voice in every song. not the worst album on here but ehh. i just like the songs that are DLC in rock band. favorites: the weight, chest fever
pretty chill, perhaps too chill. very stoner uncle rock vibes
I was surprised this was from the 60's since it does not sound like the Beatles. This was extremely mediocre. Nothing really clicked for me, not even the one hit song. The organs were nice though. High 2.
Sorry boomers, there’s nothing notable about this album. Except maybe that the lead singer sounds a little like Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski.
It’s got « The Weight ». It saves the album. Very poorly mixed and mostly bland pop folk. 2 stars
Not a sound I love, and not particularly catchy. It would be nice idle listening on a long drive, but I don’t imagine I would be seeking it out even then.
I wasn't particularly feeling it: This Wheel's on Fire is a classic of course.
Bored me.
No soy muy fan de la musica gringa. no estuvo mal es como escuchar los beatles un poco rancheros. IDk
jajajaja bien weird noentendi 4/10 la verdad monótono
Easy listening rock. Too easy for my taste, felt at times it crossed too far into country/similar vibes, no particular tracks that grabbed me, 2.5/5.
Meh
i know that the band is supposed to be a big deal, but honestly i found most of these songs kind of unlistenable.
egy számot kedveltem spotifyon
Perfectly decent music but feels overlong, samey lacking in standout moments. The Weight is the clear highlight. 2-2.5
Pretty good album, but no songs that I would write home about. Overall the album seems to lack energy, in some places it becomes almost morose. High 2/low 3.
The only song from The Band that I'm familiar with is "The Weight," so this album was new territory for me for the most part. I can't say that I got much from listening to this. The songs were alright, but nothing really stood out to me. The vocals weren't anything special, the instrumentation was okay, and the vocals and lyrics weren't anything to write home about. There was some nice organ playing on a few tracks, specifically "Chest Fever," but other than "The Weight," I think the majority of this album was pretty forgettable. I see so many five star reviews for this album, but I guess I'm missing what all these other folks are hearing. This album was pleasant enough, but I definitely won't be revisiting it.
Repetitive
this is the 1968 release with 11 tracks, not the 2000 reissue nor the 2018 anniversary edition track 1, Tears of Rage: not sure if it was a mixing issue with this digitalization of the track but the volume of a couple of the instruments was louder than the rest. slow and soulful with more tears than rage, not my style but a decent 5.5/10 track 2, To Kingdom Come: yep, definitely something to do with the digitization. maybe splitting it from mono to stereo just made some of the instruments quieter overall? in any case, this track has more cheerful(?) energy to it despite the title being about dying (and going To Kingdom Come). 7/10 track 3, In a Station: well, i certainly feel as bored by this one as much as being in a train station. 5/10 track 4, Caledonia Mission: not a lot of difference to me from the song prior, 5/10 track 5, The Weight: better vibes, but only by a bit. 6.5/10 track 6, We Can Talk: not super distinct from the prior track, 7/10 with the added half point for milking a cow??? track 7, Long Black Veil: hah, he can't admit to not murdering someone because he boned his bff's wife. get adultered, idiot. 7/10 track 8, Chest Fever: this feels like nothing, but it's at least an upbeat nothing! 6.5/10 track 9, Lonesome Suzie: lonesome vibes are accomplished by this song, but it's too slow for me to appreciate them. had to skip forward a little to be able to finish the track, so subtracting half a point - 4.5/10 track 10, This Wheel's on Fire: solid song but nothing too stand-out for me. 6/10 track 11, I Shall Be Released: "i shall be released" - me when i finish this album lmao. while it's another slow song, i do appreciate the piano + acoustic guitar backing. 6/10 overall: 6/10 -> 3/5, but my personal enjoyment of this album was low enough that i'm bumping it to 2/5.
In terms of music production, vocals, etc, it sounds good. Varied instrumentation, good harmonies. But it draaaaags. The second half of the album was slow and boring and I couldn't wait for it to end. I was tempted to listen to the album at 1.5x speed.
Eh
Was looking forward to this because I like the weight. Disappointing.
idk irgendwie langweilig irgend ein alter rock halt
Uncle Jed & his rustic band graduated from playing incredibly sloppy practice sets in our garage drunk after watching football games to playing incredibly sloppy actual albums in a studio. Good for them I suppose.
The Weight is a great song but the rest of the album kinda bored me
Im not actually a huge fan of this album as a wholw. Sure there are a few classics on here. But a lot of it sounds like high guys trying to harmonize, unaware they are sounding like bullshit artists making shit up as they go.
I can see why this artist has its place in music history. In this album, the Instruments are played well, The vocals and harmonies are great. I can't deny 'the weight' of talent behind this band but even with that... I was just bored. Simply that. This album just blends together: nothing pops out aside from the famous song The Weight. But even so, it's probably because it's been played to death on the radio or at every karaoke bar. Even at 4 minutes and 34 seconds - that song feels as if it goes on forever due to its repetition. I'm not feeling this album and I really have no need to revisit this album.
sorta dull
not for me. the only song you've heard from it is the only decent one.
the weight 2.5
Boring
I struggled at the beginning but glad I stuck with it, not sure I'll revisit soon.
