Reviews (page 9 of 12)

It made my soul run with vigor. WOW

Not a band I recall being aware of. Quite good and a couple of the songs felt familiar so either I *hav*e heard some of it before - without being aware of the band (no pun intended) - or they have been covered by others. Would happily listen to again.

Nice sounds to it, I’ll need to finish it later.

Not as fully developed as The Band album. Certainly unique for its time, but heavier emphasis on similar sounding piano-based, hymnal sounds on some tracks (plaintive wails on Lonesome Suzie and Tears of Rage), whereas The Band offered more diversity of sound. The Weight is a highlight, but Chest Fever is an equal standout and shows how important Garth's organs are to the band's sound.

Pretty decent

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

A charming blues/folk/rock album. Wikipedia lists the genres as "Americana" and "Roots Rock" -- I've never heard of either of these, but I suppose I'll add them to my lexicon. Most of the songs are fairly forgettable, but I really appreciate the simplicity at work here.

Weight is good

Pretty decent generic American folky-bluesy rock. I definitely don't dislike it, but it doesn't stand out in its genre, and could be essentially the complete backing track to Almost Famous—great film, but music shouldn't be in its element as backing for some other art form.

Not bad for 1968, kinda early Bruce-ish

The band is cool and all, but late 60's roots country rock ain't my jam.

When I was listening to this album I remember thinking that I had absolutely no opinions on it whatsoever

Pretty boring but the weight is a good song

Not my favourite but it was ok

I liked this album. Fun, interesting. Good lyrics and I like the lead singer's voice.

The Weight I Shall Be Released

Bang average album

i enjoyed it mayb 6-7/10

This is the Band's first album after being Bob Dylan's backing band (with three of these songs written by Bob Dylan). I love the Weight, and their cover of I Shall Be Released, but outside those two, I'm not a huge fan of the rest.

Y'know, I'm just not sure if I really get what makes this one of the top 100 albums of all time accoridng to Rolling Stone (as in, it's 100 exactly as of 2020). Like, I can guess at elements—the harmonies, the communial songwriting, how it sounds like it actually sounds like guys playing in a basement... And just the fact that they were able to step out of Bob Dylan's shadow the way they did. I mean, I think of these guys, I hardly ever think that they were Dylan's backing band. Even on this album, where I'm actively aware Dylan wrote two songs. It's just, I'm not seeing the sauce. Worth a listen, sure, but I'm not sure why music from the Big Pink is good compared to music from anywhere else. Also, for some reason it really made me wanna listen to "The Chain"? I have no idea.

Holds up ok. Only 3 standouts for me, though: The Weight, Long Black Veil, and I Shall Be Released.

Nice melodies just so so

Opzich wel okee. Kende the weight al, maar die was ook minder goed dan ik me herinnerde

some nice songs

Just fine. The weight pushes this to a 3.

The first 3 tracks didn't really grab me on the first listen then I was getting into Caledonia Mission thinking ok there's at least one track on here that I like. Then, of course, The Weight kicks in and it all falls into place. Nothing in the remainder of my first listen really matched The Weight but I found on the second listen the other tracks started to grow on me. A few more listens might get it to a 4 but for now it's a 3 for me.

it's fine

Elska plötuumslagið. Tónlistin bara fín.

The Band has a sound like no other musical act. So smooth, so twangy, so folksy and just all-around enjoyable to listen to. Some of the songs were a little one-note, and I didn't hear anything (besides The Weight) that I thought was amazing. All good, solid songs, with cool vibes and grooves, but not mind-blowing. Maybe worth a second listen to see if I missed something? Three stars.

Wanted to like it more than I did.

Not bad

The songs that aren’t hits are not bad. The history of this album surpasses the music, though.

Boring slow country rock.

Mixed feelings. I have no real attachment to the band or this LP, so I feel as though I can be honest: it starts off dull. Once we reach "The Weight," everything there and after is excellent. The issue is however that "The Weight" remains the only song that really sticks in my mind, since so much of the project is the realization of jamming and vibing with Dylan. This is good Americana (for Canadians) but it's a bit fast and loose for my tastes. (PS - stop rating the deluxe/expanded issues of these albums yeah? seems only fair to rate them as close to how they released as possible)

Album Nr. 69 The Band hat besseres zu bieten. Hier leider nur Durchschnitt.

Forgettable

Pretty good. Hadn't heard any of this before!

The Band took the core of every way music was diverging in the 60's and made one of the most homey sounds out of it. With inspiration from all over and having spent time as the Hawks before backing Dylan, they got to finally put themselves out to the world as their own group. I love that everything is recorded live. You can really hear the honesty and integrity of fellas just making something they had fun with and cared about

I used to do a cover of The Weight when I was but a 16 yr old boy. Somehow I never really went any farther with The Band. I mean I was aware of them, their lineage, being a big My Morning Jacket fan circa 2007-08, but alas... the years got away from me and theres so much other music I wanted to listen to. Well...its a great album, what can I say...? Im not really surprised...but I do hope to come back to this one again amd make up for lost time.

Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Eh, it's fine...never could get deep into The Band, but there's nothing offensive about it.

Some classics, but overall slow and just didn’t do it for me, prefer the live versions of these songs

The 60s acoustic/folk elements are The Band’s strong points, and this album has lots of those. This is highlighted in the slower songs which I really liked; the piano/keys are especially excellent throughout the album. It also sounds a bit like a transition from the 60s to 70s. It’s got the aforementioned 60s folk elements with 70s rhythms and voice. Unfortunately, I think the voice is weak and grating at times and detracts from their songs. Favorite track: The Weight

While I think this album is pretty mid, I can see this one making the list. The Weight is a classic song, and Chest Fever has a guitar tone that I wouldn't expect on an album until several years later. Otherwise, the album is alright and I don't like it that much. Highlights: 5, and 8.

Ok overall. There's something about that era / style of music that feels a little too "sloppy" to me for lack of a better word. I'm sure it's not actually musically but always keeps it from truly clicking for me

This was pretty good. I had only heard of the group The Band, but wouldn't have been able to name any songs specifically. All in all, a pretty good album.

Another one of these albums that sounds like most of the other albums... Favourite track: Lonesome Suzie.

Know the bad, blind artist. Nothing particular sick out to me but the one song I recognized

Very reminiscent of it's era. Not much stood out to me.

Other than The Weight, which is a classic, I found the other tracks OK but nothing amazing.

Good stuff but didn't stick that much with me

Good. But not really for me.

Gentle rock, lots of vocal harmony, recognized The Weight

I find this album frustrating. Every track has a spark of something I would be extremely interested in listening to, but - with very few exceptions - no track ever really get there.

Really sounding like the late 60's this is quite famous. Not really my cup of tea but it's ok to listen to for the purposes of the chart.

Inoffensive background soft rock. Favorite part was sending my friends messages saying "I like boobs too much" with a screenshot of Chest Fever playing.

Never knew who this was, pretty good

Nice, but nothing exceptional. Progressing, but not breakthrough.

ganz cute

Was nice. Had a slightly bluesy style.

Loved a few, liked the rest!

Totally neutral. Wouldn't listen again but inoffensive.

The Weight is an all time song, but the rest is a bit boring.

This was pretty fine. Nothing overly exciting, but nothing that made me want to stop listening. Not bad out of ten.

Eerder kregen we het album The Band van deze band. Dat sprak aan. Lekker swingende rock of rockende blues.

Quite enjoyed it. Outside of “The Weight” and the Ab Fab theme nothing really stood out. But it was pleasant enough.

The album itself ripples along, the only song that stands out is "I Shall Be Released" by Bob Dylan.

Pretty good. Not my genre but I could easily listen to the whole thing.

I kinda like it. The weight was one of the first songs I learned on drums so I have an unbreakable connection there. Will I listen to again: 25%

Apart from "The Weight", I have always failed to understand the attraction of The Band and was almost completely underwhelmed by this album. Their version of "This Wheel's on Fire" is truly awful.

Easy listening but nothing special.

Interesting Album

There's a lot of neat creativity in here for 1968. Some very talented guys, if not particularly my favorite style of music. I appreciate the story-telling in the lyrical content as well, not a lot of repetition there. I don't know how often I'd sit and listen, just due to preference, but I'm glad it came up! Fav tracks: Caledonia Mission, Long Black Veil, Chest Fever

Unimpressive. A melhor parte de descobrir a banda foi admirar os integrantes - belíssimos! A música não chegou a ser incômoda, mas nada uau!!!

Another band on the list of stuff I've been meaning to listen to. Now that I've listened to it I still feel the same way. This album was not very eye opening.

The Weight makes this a three instead of a two.

S'ok. Didnt set me on fire.

Sin mas, rock tranki algo asi nostalgico

Easy to listen to, but not very spectacular.

Kinda sad NGL but the lyrics and instrumentation was unique and interesting

Not their best work, but not bad either. Just unremarkable for the most part.

- "What's the name of that band?" - "The Band!" - "Yes, the band - what are they called?" - "The Band!"

I'd give this a 2.5. It had moments where I thought it could be quite good but never really got there.

A good album all around. Only one real banger but at least it is diverse enough for a listen through. This is from the band and the banger is the weight.

this was a regular in my dads recors rotation. I cant count how many times I've heard The Weight but I've never gotten sick of it! brought back memories but listening as an adult it was just okay. love their sound though.

Pretty good! Sounds like a lost Grateful Dead album. The Weight is undeniable

de unaa 7/10

Wasn't what I expected but I enjoyed it.

To me, this sounded like a cross between the Muppets, electric mayhem and Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Apart from one song (you know the one) not exactly memorable, but I understand their historical significance. Just wish the album could match. Still, progressionally and sonically well done.

Music for the simple life, or at least, made me want to move to upstate New York and just chill. Some overlap with contemporaries The Grateful Dead, songs can feel a little samey, but they pull out enough ideas to mix it up here and there. Favorite tracks: "To Kingdom Come", "The Weight", "Chest Fever"

Well crafted but not my thing. 7/10

The weight was a banger

was ok

Highlights: Tears of Rage, The Weight. In a nutshell: a multi-genre album cooked in a basement studio. The only exposure I had to The Band was the Jennifer Saunders/Joanna Lumley karaoke cover of This Wheel's On Fire (from Absolutely Fabulous) and this album's hit "The Weight" (one of the best songs of the late 60s and probably the best song about troubadour life that I can think of, probably ever). Music From Big Pink has occasional good moments but I was largely disinterested after track 5. My main complaint is that the vocals sound whiny. I know that this album is sentimental, nay important, to many classic rock music fans, so I'm not going to write off The Band completely. Overall: 6/10

An album filled with some classics and some songs that didn't really hit for me. Obviously influential but not my taste in regards to classic music.

could i write poetry to this? n

Not bad a listen but doesn’t have as many hooks as I would like

Really enjoyed this. Some really good tracks.Loved the riff in Chest Fever. Deservedly high 3*

Not bad at all. This music is nothing exceptional, but it does work very nicely as chill background study music. Also 'The Weight' is a fantastic song so that's a bonus. The album as a whole seems kind of forgettable, so its getting a three stars. 3/5

Dad rock! 🤘🏽

+1 point for Album cover painted by Bob Dylan and whole their bromance thing that was going on.

I'm sure there was nothing like this back in 1969. The original indie Americana album. My problem is I'm not that fond of the songs. The sound is interesting the playing, impressive and the arrangements are cool and unique but the songs mostly lay there for me. 3.5 stars

Boy, The Weight sure is a lot better/different from the other tracks on this album

Not bad for hippie music. Some songs are real gems; some songs are just songs.

Solid listen.

Perfectly fine in a "mid" kind of way.

Favorite Tracks: - Tears of Rage - The Weight - We Can Talk

4/10 - Some interesting pieces but overall mid

It was kinda boring but not terrible

old school cool, a little slow for me, good background

Meh, I know it is a big classic album. I was never a huge fan of it and this listen didn’t change my feeling.

There are better Band albums in my opinion

It's all a bit laid back but there's some good moments here. The Weight for sure, but also We Can Talk and especially Chest Fever with its slow burn of a riff. Lonesome Suzie is grating though - don't like the vocal.

This sounded of a piece with their subsequent release, but where that one left me a bit cold, I like this just a bit better. The storytelling, harmonies and overall musicianship drew me in. But not really something I think I’ll go back to frequently.

Couple of good songs and then a bunch of Phish/Greatful Dead preview

Solid.

If you removed the Clavinet the whole album would fall apart as a cohesive piece of work. Obviously The Weight is a banger. How can he sing so well on this and so badly on In The Station? Why does every other song sound like Randy Newman? Too much wailing psudeo hymns. Chest Fever - rock organ works. This tune is a banger that gets bad and then gets good again. Lonesome Suzie is a fucking tune too. The first one that actually feels as emotional as it vocally advertises itself. It occupies a strange space when viewed in 2023, because so much of it is either phenomenally influenced and/or influential. I keep hearing clichés and recognisable riffs that either inspired, or were inspired by, The Band The Bee Gees owe money for I Shall Be Released. Tune.

The artwork is cool. I liked I Shall Be Released, and Lonesome Suzie. Generally the organ is too much for me

A bit all over the place, some standout moments (The Weight, obviously) and some misses (In A Station does not do it for me). I think I’m mostly into this album for the lore of the Band, the idea of Big Pink, and for the influence it had on music of the time. Its creativity was at the crest of a wave of febrile activity in 70s folk, rock and popular music and you can feel the reverberations of Music From Big Pink across a wide range of artists from this time forward. I enjoyed it, but probably won’t seek out the whole album to listen to frequently.

Didn't love but found some gems in here

talented just not for me

Favourite song: I Shall Be Released.

i thought i was going to like it a little bit more than i did. i’ve heard about The Band in conversation with other musical interests of mine for a while but this wasn’t anything spectacular

Based on the sound of the album, I had assumed this was from later than 68.

Geen uitschieter

The Weight a great song.

Did not enjoy pulling into Nazareth

Good solid 60s music

Beetje saai, wel mooi

Didnt have time to listen might be good i love the band.

Don’t know why but The Band just never hit me like Bob Dylan himself. Nice Americana folk though.

I don't know much about The Band, but they're pretty generically of the time. The Weight is a good tune, but the rest of it just seems uninspired.

Dreamy 70's folk rock. A-side slow and meandering, then comes The Weight, with its flowing melody and tight harmonies, and the album shifts. The B-side has a little more focus and energy.

3/5 - Good album would listen again at some point. The Weight being the obvious classic.

Not bad, not my style. The weight by far most famous song and my favorite

Kind of a county soul fusion. Pretty decent. I didn't love it, but I can 100% see the influence that it could have had on Rock music moving forward.

The intersection of easy listening classic rock, southern classic rock, and radio classic rock.

it was fine. not my kind of music but i enjoyed it!

I did not realize that The Weight was this band or this album until i got hit with the chorus lmao. enjoyed it! 3.5

Pretty good classic rock but the sound feels quite common. The weight is nice

I didn’t know anything about The Band before this, but now I know a few things about The Band. Liked this album, loved the cover of Long Black Veil. Easy listening but not my favorite music.

Did not realize what an influential album this was. maybe it was just the day, but i didn't connect with it. Im not used to three different vocalists. One interesting note was that the Weight, the most popular osng, is an idyllic look at americana towns but the rest of the album looks at everything from a more pessimistic lens (golden claf, hexagram), etc. I was also surprised to hear theyre from canada/ny. lots to learn!

Some iconic bangers but all in all average

3/5 Not my jam

Good but wasn’t in mood. Rocky blues

Ontzettende boomerrock.

Pretty good

The Band's debut starts and ends strong, but I find the bulk of the release uncompelling once again.

It wasn't too bad. I was expecting hippy bullshit. I didn't love it either but I do definitely respect The Weight. A light 3.

I love Bob Dylan, and The Band have provided great support. I respect The Band, but I just don't think they're all that as a solo act. 3.5 stars, rounding down.

Not my favorite style

I enjoyed this album! Not so much of the annoying guys voice.

Not bad but it's no Cripple Creek. I really like The Weight but it's one of those songs that I would just mumble the lyrics until the chorus.

The Weight is a classic track, but the rest is pretty forgettable.

To me it’s the kind of music being played in the background in a bar besides US highway

Perfectly fine, wouldn't listen again.

The Band's "The Pink Album" is a mediocre album with one pearl of a song: "The Weight." The rest of the album is a mixed bag of folk-rock and country tunes, some of which are forgettable and others that are downright bad. But "The Weight" is a masterpiece, a timeless ballad with some of the most iconic lyrics in rock and roll history. If you're a fan of The Band, then you probably already own "The Pink Album" and you'll likely enjoy it, even if it's not their best work. But if you're new to The Band, I recommend just skipping straight to "The Weight." It's worth the price of the album on its own.

Pretty good slow jam rock. The Weight is the stand out here.

Good album.

classic jazzy/blues, decent but a bit too chill for me

Not a bad album, but not particularly interesting either, to be honest.

Loving it ! Pas giga original mais propre.

- Some slow piano rock vibes - Nothing I would go back and actually listen to, but it's good chill music to play in the background - We Can Talk is a jam - 2.5 round up

- good vibes, they sounds kind - The Weight is a fantastic song, love the lyrics

Some really strong tracks, from Caledonia Misssion thru London Suzie it’s a strong album. I enjoyed the mix in lead on this one bc it seems all members took a strong lead. Good album not top tier 3.5 stars

not my thing, glad i tried it but i cant say anything stuck with me. i do really like the album art

Pretty good.

I do like The Band, this album felt very authentic

Hieman ehkä psykedeelistä rockia. Ihan hyvä kuunneltava Loppupään 4 kappaletta parhaimpia The Weight kappaleella yli 300 miljoonaa kuuntelua, mutta ei kuullostanut tutulta

soft, mellow funk so far. I think i like it. 4? 3 for later songs.

Eh, I've heard better. Nothing I'd write home about. It's sits squarely in the middle of the pack of what I've listened to so far. It's just ok.

It’s a solid album but I’m not in love with it 3/5

Yet another rock album from the 1960s. Not my thing really. The only song I knew was The Wright, which is a decent song. 3/5 *side note: I've been getting a lot of albums from the 60s lately. Hopefully that changes soon*

It had its moments here and there that granted it a three, barely, but some of it was boring. The vocals also got to be a bit much at points. I guess I preferred the other one. My favourite song was This Wheel's on Fire.

nice, sounds ahead of it's time

Not listened in full before. Some brilliant moments.

Easy listening with some complexity. Now I know where that one song comes from.

Charmerende 60’er rock, folk/country-vibes, storytelling

Pretty good tbf

Love "The Weight;" the rest was fine.

The Weight is a good song, but the rest is too Americana folksy for me. 2.5 stars.

This album isn't bad, but the sound doesn't particularly grip me either. This album has Tears of Rain, The Weight, and I Shall Be Released on it.

Very good white man blues - a genre I don’t like very much. The Weight is still a banger though.

BEST SONGS: -Caledonia Mission

3/5 Best: The Weight Worst: I Shall Be Released

the weight is so much better than everything else it might as well come from a different band

Knew a few, liked a couple, wouldn't have minded a bit more variety.

I enjoyed this album. The weight was the most noticeable and enjoyable track.

Not bad, just not completely memorable

Great listen what a queen bitch. Best has to be respect worst don’t let me lose this dream

5.5/10 Cant remember but still listenable

C'est du bon vieux rock/americana, l'album se laisse écouter tout seul. Pas trop monotone non plus comme j'avais peur que ce le soit, il y a assez de diversité dans les pièces. C'est pas un album tant impressionnant, mais il est généralement solide. 7/10

Not really for me: I have to give this album credit for being enjoyed by many and also including Bob Dylan one of the legends of the scene. However this wasn't really to my taste and I found it a little boring and uninspiring at times, all linking back to my hatred for country. Wasn't the worst thing I've ever listened to but I doubt I'd be back for more.

Buen disco de folk-rock, con alguna canción más conocida. Tranquilo de escuchar, sin grandes alardes, pero viendo que hay un gran grupo detrás. Conjuntado y con una buena voz

3/11, 27%

This was a nice relaxing album to listen to

Music From Big Pink was an ok Americana roots/rock album, most likely helped by the number of Bob Dylan songs that were covered, that wasn't his only influence - he painted the album art! The instrumentation was quite good with a really laid back vibe and felt really organic overall. Best: We Can Talk Worst: Lonesome Suzie 2.5 Stars

Two hits the rest a bit meh. Other people have done better jobs covering the hits

This is a good album but not a spectacular one. That said, The Weight is a hell of a song and Dylan's lyrics lift many of the songs.

Above average

No way this is from 1968. They were ahead of their time with the first song. The guitars are so wet I thought they were from the mid 2010's. Pretty solid stuff though. I enjoyed the variety of instrument the band brings. It really does feel like a band. Wouldn't mind it if I had to listen to this again but I don't think I'd actively seek this out. I think maybe if I was more into this genre then sure? Feel like this music hits more in Tennessee. Like, they'd kill it in a city wide talent show in Nashville. Fav songs: Tears of Rage, In a Station

A little to mellow for me...

Lethargic. It's decent roots rock, yeah, but oh my god does it feel... *so* slow. There's beautiful moments, yes-- I love coming back to that beautiful organ on "Chest Fever" -- but this album has three or four great tracks that I'm highly certain are the reasons the album is on the list. The rest is... incredibly forgettable, with the vocals slowly going from "interesting" to "grating" over the course of any given listen. Annoyingly stereo, too. Damn Canadians got so tired making this album that they needed Bob Dylan to help out. A sleepy-ass 3/5.

listened. i can tell it's a great album and very exemplar of its genre, but the trouble is that it's not really a genre i'm a fan of. i'm giving it a 3/5 because i can tell that it's good music, but it's just not music i enjoy.

Pretty good standard 60s folkish rock, made mainly popular because of Dylan's writing.

Very good band playing average folk/roots songs. It's nice and enjoyable, but I'll never come back to this in the end.

Honestly I would consider this above average. Not quite worthy of a 4 star, but it was just a good album with nothing really missing.

Has a few good jams worth listening too, all in all not too bad

I'd say this feels like a very "of the time" album. I did really like it and I'm not in the best headspace so the new album was really nice as a little distraction.

it's fine

Quite enjoyable.

Couple highlights like The Weigjt and Chest fever. The electric organ in chest fever FUCKKKS. The rest of it becomes a bit incoherent, drags on in my opinion. Sonically strong but not very engaging, I found myself waiting for songs to end. Definitely did like the songs I liked and the cover art being made by Bob Dylan who co-signed them was a cool nugget of info

A collection of songs that doesn't really feel coherent.

This is quite a cool album. The background reading suggests it’s a gateway album for many other genres. In 1968 it’s fairly early rock. The organ is pretty cool and I really enjoy it on Chest Fever

Cat: I have my favorites. I think I’m used so such energy from The Last Waltz that some of these tracks don’t grab me as much. Never heard To Kingdom Come and that was great! Don’t think I’ve heard them do Long Black Veil either, AND ITS AWESOME! Vocal harmonies and time is different than I’ve heard in the best way. CHEST FEVER WHOA! Stretch at the end wasn’t great. Overall, a wonderful listen! AJ: I love the Band. Some of these songs aren’t for me. I love The Band.

The Band are a psychadelic folk rock/blues band from the 60's. They formed in Canada, and included both Canadian, and American artists. This is their debut album, and the song The Weight launched them into stardom. They came from humble beginnings, as Ronnie Hawkins' backup band "The Hawks", then later, Bob Dylan's backup band, "The Band". After Dylan had his motorcycle crash, and was finished touring while he healed, these guys spent time in rural NY, just living that rural lifestyle, smoking pot, and writing beautiful music. The harmonies reached by the band members is awesome! These guys have a way of sounding like a bunch of lads having a jam session, while also sounding polished. Levon Helm has a great singing voice (as seen on The Weight). The fact that he can play drums so cleanly while also singing flawlessly is awesome. Apparently this album is so good, it made Eric Clapton disband Cream and persue his solo career instead. Overall, a great album. Nothing wrong with it, but just not necessarily something I would actively seek out either. A lot of folk rock/Americana that followed can trace its roots to these guys, and this record. Favourite songs: The Weight, Long Black Veil, To Kingdom Come, We Can Talk, Chest Fever, The Wheel's On Fire Least favourite songs: Lonesome Suzie 3/5

Decent stuff, not to long either

Toe tappers for grandpa. It's a solid slower rock album with good lyrics. The remaster on spotify sounds really nice. It just kind of suffers from... being old. So it sounds pretty safe. But there's nothing really wrong with that. I liked it Score: 65 Art: 70

I like the name of the album, the music is decent too. Thanks Dylan for just writing and not singing!

'The Weight' is awesome. The rest is pretty forgettable. Not actually bad, but fairly generic.

Eh. Again.

One of those overrated "classic" albums that have a mythology which exceeds the greatness of the actual music. With the notable exception of "The Weight" and a couple of other tracks on Side 2, this is largely above-average fare, but not great.

You can feel something special taking form but it's still embryonic at this point. Some flashes of those laid-back, folksy, gentle, cut your throat lyrics ....

Tears of rage- bit slow and plodding for me, but I like lyrical themes To Kingdom Come- Bit hokey pokey In a station- I think the lyrics are a bit tryhard at times but I like this overall 👍 Caledonia Mission- I really like this track, very upbeat 👍 The Weight- I guess this is the famous track on this record? Its fine We Can Talk- Feels like a poor mans we can work it out Long Black Veil- Love a good murder ballad 👍 Chest Fever- like the organ feature 👍 Lonesome Suzie- god this is a bit of a dirge This Wheels On Fire- I think I would like this better if Bob Dylan was singing it lol I Shall Be Released- good ending track 👍 I liked this fine enough, and I can see the influence (in things like Derek and the Dominoes etc), but it just isn’t quite my thing personally. 3/5

I don't know how Bob met the Band, I realized that while I was listening.

Vocal delivery made this one challenging to listen to in modern times. Great 60s-era album.

OK, was expecting something spectacular

Today I learned take a load off Annie is called The Weight. These guys effected music way more than I knew.

Some good parts on there

Critics loooooove this band. I had heard it once before and didn't get the hype at all. After listening a second time now, I think I'm coming around. But only a little. I think the Weight is a great song, and a couple of others are good, like Chest Fever and Caledonia, but then there are bad ones like Lonesome Suzie to bring it back down. The singer's voice can get really annoying when he sings high like that. So, over all an average rating for this one.

The Weight is a great song, rest of the album is forgettable.

Liked it more than the last the band album

The Weight is still a masterpiece, everything else was good but forgettable for me.

Solid.

cool 7/10

Love “The Weight” by The Band, but the rest of the album was just ok. Feel like the dual vocalists struggle to harmonize at times, which was distracting.

It's easy to hear the influences that would shape later music from bands like Stone Temple Pilots and Daughtry. While the music isn't something I would add to my own playlist, i can see the influence it had on later music.

Can see why it is influential, however, didn't really enjoy it.

Generally cool, but not my type

Tears Of Rage: 2/5. Right off the bat, I should say I don't like roots rock. To Kingdom Come: 2/5. Slightly better rhythm, but the gospel's meh. In A Station: 4/5. Really loved this one, great narration and playfulness! Caledonia Mission: 1/5. Very surrealist lyrics, was not easy to the ear. The Weight: 2/5. And we're back at the church motifs... We Can Talk: 1/5. Those Canadians are crazy. Long Black Veil: 3/5. Has good pace, but what's the message here? Chest Fever: 3/5. Good beat, weakened only by the surrealist wordings. Lonesome Suzie: 4/5. Despite the church vibes, the lyrics are fantastic. This Wheel's On Fire: 4/5. Excellent instruments, lyrics are also fine. I Shall Be Released: 1/5. Whiny and uninspiring, sad way to end the album.

Music from Big Pink is the debut album by Canadian-American rock band the Band. This "the Band" was the backing band for Bob Dylan during his 1966 tour and helped him record his 1975 album The Basement Tapes. Music from Big Pink was recorded around the same time as Bob Dylan's 1966 tour when the Band wanted to make their own musical statement, and it employs a blend of country, rock, folk, classical, R&B, soul, and blues music. Bob Dylan wanted to help with the recording but ultimately decided this album was soley the Band's creation, so instead he only painted the cover art for the album. This album received a positive critical reaction and has been cited as the beginning of the Americana genre - a mashup of common American genres including most of the ones on this album. The laid-back nature of this album attracted many people, but also put off some people as sounding "boring". I may be one of the latter. The music was great, but not something I would actively seek out again. Still, if you're a fan of Bob Dylan's music than you will probably like the Band's Music From Big Pink.

nao é o melhor do the band mas ainda assim bom pois contem alguns classicos

These guys are given a chance to have a band name so that they are not referred to as "Dylan's backing band", and they chose THAT name? lol. To be fair, it's as generic as '60s psych-rock can be. A bit too generic if to be honest.

Chill, Hippie Musik

Soulfull, handmade Rock. Down to Earth and the answer who Dr.Dogs‘ grandfathers were. 2.6

When I signed up for this project, I was expecting more albums of this kind of stature and reputation. Despite constant prodding from my mate Dave Lewis to give the Band some attention, they have largely sat on my back-burner. I mean, I've seen the Last Waltz, I know the hits, I even have a favourite deep cut ('Don't Do It', probably the funkiest thing they ever recorded). And I've certainly read a thousand hagiographic magazine articles about Music from Big Pink. I know the legends, and this is a legendary album from a legendary band. _The_ Band. So what is it like to sit down and properly listen to Music from Big Pink? Well, I can certainly hear how this was massively influential in both song-writing and production approach. And like many super-influential albums, they were followed by a few people who did it better and a whole lot of crappy imitators playing terrible and increasingly pale carbon copies of this record. Can't deny the song-writing (for the most part); The Weight, three previously unheard (except on bootleg) Dylan classics from the Basement Tapes, Chest Fever, and a cover of Lefty Frizzell's Long Black Veil. Chest Fever is my favourite performance on the album. But the recordings border on demos in some cases, although is that part of the charm of it? Despite the legends of being developed in the basement of Big Pink (the house in upstate New York), I gather from wikipedia that this was actually mostly recorded in some of the most prestigious studios in America at the time (A&R in New York, and Capitol and Gold Star in LA). And here come my blasphemous opinions; a lot of the singing is pretty weak (especially Richard Manuel), and I have never really rated Robbie Robertson's playing. This album is possibly a bit over-rated. And the cover art is _rubbish_. There, I said it. But it really is hard to judge an iconic album like this; so much of what has come since has been shaped by it; "authentic" production, band dynamics, the embrace of American roots styles, country-soul... And I do love that it isn't polished to the point that there is no life left in it, unlike so many albums. I can respect it, but I don't know that I really love it. I'm glad I have given it some proper attention. See Dave, I told you I would, eventually.

Un album immédiatement oublié une fois terminé. Encore bravo Robert.

Un album oublié à peine terminé, je suis donc bien incapable de vous dire de quoi il en retourne.

Un album chouette à écouter et intéressant car il a inspiré énormément d'artistes

I really wanted to like this so I listened on repeat all day but I was never blown away. Oh well. I really enjoyed Chest Fever and wished more songs were like it. I mildly enjoyed Tears of Rage but not enough to add it to my Spotify liked songs

Solid 3 - would not mind if it was on the radio and wouldn't change the station

The world's quintessential 3/5.

It was mostly just fine. A pleasant listen but not too many standouts. 5/10

Great instrumentals and vocals. This isn't for me, but I see how it would've been different for the time. Fave track(s): Chest Fever, I Shall Be Released

It was alright

Just not a huge fan of The Band

Rating: 6/10

Some highlights for sure, sadly also some lowlights

I like this but feel like the Band hadn’t quite hit their stride yet. The sound is a little reedy and under-defined, too many Dylan covers. Brimming with potential that would really shine through the next release.

Pretty cool, 3.5 stars

норм!

Not really my thing, but will recommend to my husband!

Feels like Dylan and The Band just dumped all they're recordings in a box and shipped it out. Of course The Weight and Chest Fever are great tracks, but outside that, it's not great.

Couple of notable songs, the rest is like the bands name. pretty bland.

"The Weight" is a classic. But the album it's from is not The Band's best LP. That subsequent eponymous one is. Number of albums left to review: 723 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 135 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 67 (including this one) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 76

I've always wanted to listen to the Band but never remembered to so this is a nice opportunity. I love the artwork and the fact that it was created by Dylan and also all the back story about the tour with Dylan. Nice to start with the debut album. It was a nice album and I'm sure I would get really into the lyrics if I either had more time to deep dive or had nostalgic ties with it if I'd discovered it years ago. I don't though and I didn't find any of the songs stand-out or particularly exciting. Maybe another of their albums would be more exciting...?

Not bad at all but did wash over me at some points

I triiiied. I liked the music itself but the singing was strugglicious and I listen to some bad singers lol idk I just couldnt get into it but still giving it a 3 for musicality. Might try it again and change my mind.

This was an alright album for my birthday I suppose. It has arguably their biggest (and most overrated) hit but it was still good. Tears of rage was probs my fav but overall not quite as good as the self titled album

I don't know what to make of Music From Big Pink because it's nice, good at times, never bad, but wholly unremarkable overall. If it's indistinguishable from others of its era is that a good or a bad thing? It can hang with some of the heavyweights or sink to be as forgettable as some never-weres. The Weight is an all-timer though so it gets it to a 3/5.

This is somewhere between folk and rock & roll, similar to the Eagles in style. It's good - a perfectly pleasant listen without a really bad track on it - but doesn't hit any particularly great notes. Feels pretty ahead of its time for 1968, holds together really well as an album. 3/5, quite comfortably. Will be listening again.

Wonderfully influential album, inspired Dylan, Fairport Convention and others and fair enough but I was broadly untouched. Nice honky tonk politely raucous harmonising, some bluesy slide guitar, a nice mellow groove throughout but the album seems to lack a punch. It sorta just wombles on in the background to forget about. From time to time you'll remember it's on and be pleased but it doesn't feel like it has much sticking power.

kinda chill, dont really know how i feel about it.

it's ok

I have no strong feelings one way or the other.

C’est correct, y’a de bons trucs et un peu d’exploration.

First folk album that is decent

Not my favorite album, but some good songs. Definitely has some sounds that are ahead of its time!

Clasic, solid 1960's jam rock.

Apresenta um hit e folk bem feito.

V redu album. Vleče na country, na blues. Na Dylana. V redu.

I liked The Weight a good bit but everything else is just alright. I wouldn't mind if someone put this on and I had to listen to it, but I would never seek out to listen to this album again.

Good moments but not my favorite.

Pretty good album although I would rather listen to Bob Seger. Best song was probably chest fever

Couldn't get into it will try again later
