Take a load of fanny?
Music from big stink!!
Wasn’t bad. Not bad at all. Nothing truly amazing but not bad.
The Weight is still a great song. Rest of the album is okay.
Nice sound. Easy listening, though nothing really jumped out and wowed me.
The Band does a pretty good job playing these little folk rock songs, but nothing beats The Weight. Chest Fever is another great one, making use of that dirty electric organ that I like so much.
For some reason I’ve never been able to connect with The Band’s sound. I also had never listened to this album before. I didn’t realize this album was their debut. Not being a fan, I assumed that their self-titled was their debut. “The Weight.” is a classic and I really liked “Chest Fever” and “This Wheel’s on Fire.” The rest of their stuff is a little bit simplistic for my taste. It was a nice listen overall but still a 3.
3.4/5. Pleasant folk/rock album but nothing special.
Some alright old blues-y rock. The Weight is a classic and I liked the organ on Tears of Rage. The few slower songs like In a Station and Lonesome Suzie are a real slog but the rest are pretty enjoyable. I wouldn't put it on myself but most of the tracks are worth a listen and I wouldn't skip them if they came up in my normal spotify listening. 61/100 gecs
brutto? No Lo riascolterei? Non credo tra il 2 e il 3
Men with beards run away from LSD and camp out in the backwoods drinking moonshine, hanging out with His Bobness, playing some of his tunes, writing some of their own and reminiscing about a folk Appalachian America that probably never existed. Best Tracks: The Weight; This Wheel's On Fire; I Shall Be Released
An exciting and ambitious idea, but the execution doesn't live up to the expectations. The storytelling aspect isn't on the level of folk/old country songs, and the music (except for a couple of songs) isn't as good as in other rock albums from the time.
Hippies and psychedelia in a nice way. A classic, but also kind quite dated
Good, but definitely forgettable at a point, especially in the back half
jaja gott
Listened to on 5/16/22 2.5/5 Favorite song: The Weight This album was easy to listen to and nothing crazy special stood out to me - great background music
The Weight is far and away the best song on the album (conveniently it’s also this band’s most popular song) the rest of the album was kind of meh though so I’m giving it a 3 since I can’t give a 3.5.
This album didn't prove to be a favorite, but let me just start by saying damn if The Weight isn't one of the best and most influential folk rock songs of all time. Chest Fever was another new-to-me standout. I Shall Be Released was a beautiful, memorable, hymn-like album closer, as well. Even though I immediately called this out as 'not a favorite', there is still something about this album. You can sense the band's togetherness and the organic nature of their playing and songwriting. The tracks put the musicians' playing talent front and center. They wanted this album to sound the same to the listener as when they were recording it in the basement of Big Pink, and they absolutely achieved that. It feels incredibly intimate. The album didn't seem cohesive in so much as that each song seemed very individually conceptualized and completed, rather than intended as part of a greater work, but given the band's history and the overall vibe they were going for, this jam session style compilation of songs seems to work. This debut album from The Band is a great entry on the project, as it truly exemplifies the chances, opportunities, and happenstances that can pay off in the music world, take you out of the shadows of someone famous, and leave a lasting legacy.
The Weight was the best cut. Rest was ok
Lovely harmonies. Repetitive song structures. Overall, nice recommendation.
Absolutely fabulous theme tune turning up here was a surprise 😂
Starts brilliantly but tails off badly unfortunately
Decent album, I enjoyed listening to it but not an album I would buy or play often. Favourite song: - Tears of rage
5/10. Bit boring
I like The Weight. But could get into the rest of this album. Kind of sad boy folk music. The Band is one I always thought I should be into but could never crack. I say this as a Canadian and from Peterborough, where Ronnie Hawkins who was a previous leader of the band is from. I even remember him doing radio commercials in the early 90s for local businesses. Their other album has some songs I like but this I could not get in the same wavelength.
A solid but overall forgettable album from The Band. I can definitely see why some people might love this one as the performances all around are very good and express a lot of emotion. I enjoyed listening to it for sure, but it clearly didn't fully resonate with me as it turned into nothing more than background music by the end of it. I thought a lot of the tracks felt a bit like filler and didn't flow into each other to create a cohesive listen. 'The Weight' is no doubt a classic track, and I thought 'Long Black Veil' was also really good; other than those two, nothing really stood out lyrically or sonically. I can't deny that it is good music, but I don't really see a reason to come back to this one. 3/5.
Pretty good, pretty 60s! Added The Weight
first listen great music, little chill for me
Easy listen.
Quite uneventful but I think I enjoyed it
The weight is iconic and easily recognizable. I love getting these albums, wondering why they are listed an bam.
Música sesentera. Buena pero no de mi gusto
Enjoyable, but it just didn't move me.
Some reasonable folk, nothing special
Cozy
tycker ändå att detta svängde lite?
3/5 good but not enough
Like a pastel Stars and Stripes this is very American and unchallenging. The smooth and easy sound that launched a thousand smooth and easy clones. Zzzzzzzzzz.....
More lies in the titles of albums and the names of bands. Well, not the names of bands in this one. The Band is actually a band. And, I hadn't known before, not just any band, but Bob Dylan's backing band, striking out on their own. But to the lies - this album was not recorded in the house nicknamed "Big Pink." Which makes me question everything. Did he really even pull into Nazareth, let alone do so feeling half past dead? "The Weight" remains an absolute classic, and there are some other pretty good songs on "Big Pink," but nothing else truly stands out. Some decent folk rock, but it doesn't have me clamoring for more.
I could copy/paste my review from The Band (album). Overall feeling of disappointment. I thought I would like it more. The Band (band) covers a couple songs I like, Long Black Veil and I Shall Be Released, and I don’t like them. The falsetto on ISBR is off putting. Overall the sound is just not exciting enough. The Weight is an amazing song though.
A charming collection of songs in a folk rock style.
it had the weight but I don't remember the rest of it
Za hando. Muy bueno, pero lo siento algo lento y repetitivo. No leí las letras, así que ahí no critico
Pretty solid, I liked the Weight but nothing else really stood out to me
fine
Enjoyable stuff
Solid. Smooth. *I Will Be Released
- Por que parece trilha sonora do CSI? - O single é bom - O cover de Long Black Veil ficou bom
Enjoyed this one…..
Interesting album! Wasn't expecting much but when The Weight came on, I realized I've heard a few of these songs over my life. Nothing knocked out of the park but much more enjoyable than many of the others this week!
Familiar
Jazzy, enjoyed a few songs a lot. Good music to listen to while a rail replacement.
Legendarische band, maar het is mij toch iets te twangy
Goed te doen. Maar ook weer niet echt heel opzienbarend.
Beetje oude-mannen-lang-haar-kampvuur-muziek, maar best te pruimen.
Very country. I like it though.
Bluesy-folk (Dad?) music. Decent, some better songs
This album is a critics favourite and was very popular amongst musicians in the late sixties due to the no frills approach and tight musicianship. I personally find it just ok as it tends to meander and the vocals are a bit winey. There are several really strong tracks notably the classic "The Weight".
Interesting music never really heard of them before. Will check out again.
Easy listening, especially when you've probably had too much cocodamol. The Weight is a classic.
Rennur ágætlega og þarna er eitt frábært lag. Söngurinn er ekki að gera mikið fyrir mig, en sleppur fyrir horn. Myndi hlusta aftur en er enginn sérstakur aðdáandi.
Like with the follow-up release, this isn't always my cup of tea, yet there's still much to like here. I should note that I preferred how this is mixed on the 2018 remix, as it gives the music a much needed sense of proper spacing of the intruments. Favorites: "Tears Of Rage", "In A Station", "The Weight"
I liked!
Buen álbum
kind of boring!
Really pleasant album with a couple of tuuuuunes. Would love to get his on vinyl and really take it in properly
I've heard big things about The Band but only ever knew The Weight (which is worth a couple of stars on its own). I didn't realise they wrote This Wheel's On Fire too, though I think I prefer the Julie Driscoll version. Also, I listened to In A Station while in a station, which I think is commitment to the art. The musicianship is strong and it's got a rich sound, very evocative of the late 60s. But it doesn't have enough about it to lift it above the 3.5 masses for me.
The best Band songs are flipping amazing, but I find my mind wanders whilst listening to a full album. The second half dragged a bit. Particularly Lonesome Suzie and I Shall Be Released
The Band is somewhat legendary, and a nice bunch of true craftsmen. Unfortunately that doesn't mitigate the fact that, for me, personally, there's very little in their music that resonates or sticks with me. The Weight being one of the rare exceptions, and a few other tracks that I honestly enjoy more when covered by other artists. Even so, this one is steady listening from start to finish. A true three star experience.
Feel like I have to rate this highly purely because of the name of The Band lol. But honestly, considering how old this album is and how it's not a genre I'd usually find myself listening to, I enjoyed it, it was nice.
As "Tears of Rage"'s guitar crows into life and the layers of organ come washing in, the sun goes down on psychedelia and comes up again on roots rock. Dylan, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Byrds, Clapton and more were heading in the same "back-to-basics" direction around the same time as "Music From Big Pink" in 1968, but this album is heralded as leading the way, a landmark influence on many who followed. In the past, I've thought of The Band as overrated. Their brand of Americana/folk/country/whatever-you-want-to-call-it doesn't do much for me: wispy generalised lyrics, staid and inoffensive music, with the Dylan connection being surely one of the key things going for them. Hearing this album in full helped me to appreciate them more than I have in the past, but they still didn't completely win me over. The first few tracks didn't change my mind: although "Tears of Rage" set a melancholic, late-night tone effectively, "In a Station" (complete with irritating, distracting keyboard line) and "Caledonia Mission" were both lightweight and didn't feel like anything special. Then came the clear standout and enduring classic, "The Weight" - immediate chorus, simple melody and accompaniment, beautiful touches from harmony vocals and flourishes of piano. It deserves to be an anthem for the downtrodden (though just who the lyrics are addressing is anybody's guess). After the album reaches this apex, things do continue at a higher standard. The jaunty "We Can Talk" is as uptempo as things get here, and "Chest Fever" sports a badass organ riff and an irresistible soul vocal: it's a song to strut down a runway to with your shirt off and your hair on fire. While all the members of the band share vocal duties across the album, Manuel is given the lion's share and it's no surprise: soulful, gritty, he's a powerhouse and the standout performer. However, alternating vocalists is still a great way to guarantee variety of sound and add some separate flavours and it pays off here. By comparison with the highlights mentioned above, "Long Black Veil" is a straightforward reading of a country standard, and elsewhere things get a little bogged down in the balladry of "Lonesome Suzie." Even "I Shall Be Released", while lending a tender and stirring touch to a fairly bog-standard Dylan track, comes after a long string of ballads and felt a little fatigued the first couple of times I heard it. All that said, I'm hooked enough to say I'm slowly changing my mind on The Band... will be giving it more listens and no doubt it will improve over time. Until the first few tracks win me over, it's staying at a firm 3* and just missing out on a 4.
Ganska gött sound faktiskt. Gillade "Long Black Veil", go hammond orgel i vänster lur
Nice music
I took turns in being mildly diverted by the country / blues blend to being completely switched off.
In football terms: the musical equivalent of James Milner. Competent, dependable and workmanlike, but not very creative, innovative or all that interesting. The album is fine and generally enjoyable, but the fact that out of all of language they chose to call their group 'The Band' probably says all you need to know about the levels of imagination that are apparent here. 2.5/5.
I liked this one quite a bit more than their self-titled album. It's still very folky (which I don't like) but it's got a bit more Country/Western to it (which I do like). I think the highlight of the album is "The Weight", and the rest is kind of a "you'll like it if you like folk rock" sort of deal.
Absolutely Fabulous. Undertones of Hendrix in the vocals at times and at others it is the bayou piano that hits. This is one easy listening and very influential album.
Lots of great memories! How do I know so many songs? So glad I listened. But won't listen again by choice.
Beside the big hit of the weight, no very inspiring album. Nice for in the background.
Fínasta hass-reykinga-hippa-rokk.
The Weight is a great track and does stand out from the others
It must have been quite a blast being a music-loving Boomer. Having all these iconic albums coming along and changing the world of music when you were in your 20s. I knew two songs on this album - "The Weight" (which I did not know had that title!) and the Ad Fab theme song. The rest of the album was fine, but it didn't grab me as much as I felt it was. Again, this seems like an album included for its role in music history - and that's not bad, but decades on it feels more like a lesson in a History of Popular Music 101 class than a music experience in its own right.
Few good songs, but didn’t feel like it was a really good album.
Wasn't too bad - one big hit and notjhing else!
Leuke listen
'The Weight' is a massive classic tune and means the album deserves at least a 3 just based on this. Not my kinda stuff though for the most part, I can appreciate its good but doesn't excite me that much, it's just chilled American country-ish rock. 3/5
Interesting contrast to listen to this right after Jeff Beck. Where that one felt more like just good raw rock n roll, this one seemed more "look how 60s were are". I dunno if that makes sense.
good album, good vibes, The Weight is an all time classic
Listened to the first half in the car. The second half on decent headphones. It's a ripper album I might've unappreciated without the cans.
Pleasant listen. AmeriCanada/10
I enjoyed this album a lot. I feel like if I would listen to this a couple of more times than just once I would definitely give it a higher score. For now a 3 or mabye 3.5 / 5 will do.
"The Weight" is actually a song that I always thought was called "Take a Load Off, Fanny". LOL!
Good stuff. Straight forward Canadian blues is the best way I can think of putting it right now. Mellow and enjoyable. Doesn't like blow my skirt up but will def listen again when in the mood.
Never did much for me, a record I appreciated more than enjoyed.
Come back to this one
Great album
Alright.
3/5
weeeh la country bof en vrai le single de l'album est très bien, je crois l'avoir déjà entendu qq part
Meh. Probably authentic and important, but meh.
Lovely stuff, nice start to the week but bar a couple of standout tracks I'll not revisit. Better than Dylan.
Enjoyable throughout - didn’t feel anything touched the weight which is a track I love from Easy Rider - not sure I would go back or explore more but really good
Liked the start and first few songs. Bluesy stuff was good but didn’t enjoy theirs country sounding parts.
The entire album is good and blending genres seamlessly throughout which keeps it from becoming boring. Chest Fever was my favorite song. My only problem was it felt a little slow to me at times and that tended to make certain songs drag a bit as an album
A handfull of super talented Canadians and Dylan move to the NY countryside, live in a big house together, and jam - morning, noon, and night - until they dial in this unique, haunting, soulful country folk style. They trade off vocals. It sounds like they recorded each track together live. It's beautfiul. It's boring. It's new. It's nostalgic. The organ is so good. Warbling Manuel and Danko are heartbreaking. It's considered a landmark album. For AER it's a real good one. B+
Some great tracks muddled by some bleh
3.5/5
This album was really cool! I liked the mix of sounds and styles, and I do think it's funny that their name is "The Band"
Amazing this band of mostly Canadians could put out such an album of Americana, like CCR from SF playing bayou music. The sound is very intimate, though the production is a bit muddy for me - their release the following year is much more crisp. Roger Waters says "the second most influential album after Sgt Peppers". I'm sure I'll be a better judge after multiple listens or at least after I listen to the Basement Tapes. I don't mean to be unpatriotic but I think Levon Helm could do more singing.
Not my thing, but it's nice. Background music.

כייפי שבת בבוקר וייב
Interesting trivia... apart from Levon Helm, all members of the Band were Canadian, most notably Robbie Robertson. The Weight is greight, and the organ intro to Chest Fever is pretty epic.
Oki
Definitely a band from the 60's Not my style but I'm sure it's a classic that others enjoy.
Fine
Vi hace muchos años la película del concierto de despedida de The Band. La portada es de Bob Dylan que lo dio todo ^__^. Y solo decir que está la canción The Weight, así que no hace falta nada más.
Not bad but definitely expected more for this legendary band.
Good sound liked the instruments
Very samey across the whole album. Not bad, but gets repetitive.
Es como una especie R&B, blues, algo de folk. Es un álbum redondo que tiene una energía muy buena en la mayor parte de las canciones
Bueno pero nada memorable
solo conozco "the weight" solo me gusta "the weight"
Solid rustic country folk rock... was hoping there were more standouts. Tears of rage and the weight were strong... interesting lyrics on long black veil. Enjoyable.
Good not great, I would like more from The Band.
The Band is ok, they don't excite me very much. I enjoyed "Caledonia Mission." "The Weight" is iconic but I have heard it so many times and I don't like getting it stuck in my head.
Ok
#dadrock
Was ok
Ik voel me een beetje indifferent over dit album
It was okay, but a little too mellow for my tastes.
Doesn't do a ton for me, but not bad. Some of the extra songs that weren't on the main release are kinda better, I like "Yazoo Street Scandal" but it's not on the Spotify default album.
One of my favorite The Band songs is on this album.
Like the band. Great group. But don't love them.
To mellow
Fav song: The Weight
Solid songs liked a shorter album. Lonesome Suzie was my fav
Good
Some good classic rock--pretty ahead of its time! Some of these old albums just don't have enough flair to keep my attention, but the first few songs on this one are timeless.
Most enjoyable some songs. Others okay
Again not for me..
Not bad however all in all just a tad bit too unexciting and too similar sounding
Hard to dive into noisy psych not chill generating
Getting hard to find different descriptions for albums that seem run of the mill. I seem to be giving out lots of 3s. So... this album is easy listening. Nothing 'bad' but few memorable tracks. 'The Weight' is probably the most well known track.
Groovy. Not quite it though
This was fine. I think I expected more, so they seemed like an Eagles-lite but without the pizazz.
very bluesy sound Could do with a little more tension and dynamic Songs are too similar from time to time The Weight has cool songwriting I like I Shall Be Released, they could do more ballads like this
9. jul 2026. 15.01h i was in a place of idgafing sa ovim albumom
Ah man. I just KNOW that this record will be completely unable to cash the FAT cheque that this mammoth on the cover is writing. Place a gilded feather in the hatband printed with the symbol for old francs on his comically large green stovepipe hat. Give him a monocle. Extend the monocle chain to reveal it is being held by an equally swagged up chimp. Chimp is obese but carries it well. While it sounds like I am addressing commands to a planet destroying Artificial "Intelligence" platform, what I am actually doing is attempting to stave off the boredom I remmber being the trademark of "The Band." These riverboat ridin' thrift shoppin', bring a guitar to a house party type o' fellas have done it again. Well, sort of. There are some certified HITS on here. "Caledonia Mission" went pretty hard. "The Weight" is incredibly nostalgic and contains one of the funnier lyrics I've heard in awhile: ""Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?" He just grinned and shook my hand, "No" was all he said." The incredibly unhelpful, yet content Nazareth man might be the bad boy of the summer™. The rest of this thing sounds like a church group band started by the cool camp counsellor who doesn't really mind if you sneak out to smoke some wacky tobacky, as long as you don't miss prayer group. 2.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Keep the funny singing guy. I like the cut of his jib.
I've struggled to have an opinion about this. It's fine. It weirdly made me think of the TV series Roseanne until it turned into the actual theme tune to Absolutely Fabulous. 2/5
Classic beige American stuff. Guess they were big, imported and influential back in the day. Average stuff for me. 2.5/5
It was ok. Slow. Bland. Good for a Monday morning.
2.25? first time hearing the band (tad bit on the nose lol) which might say something about me, but it just was not for me. i enjoyed tears of rage but as it went on i found myself itching to get through the album. though i can see why some might enjoy their sound, very little about it stuck out, and many songs were just not pleasant to my ears. songs i liked enough to save: tears of rage, the weight, and i shall be released
ehhh its not for me but i do kinda like aspect of it
--Tears of Rage...lethargic and too long --To Kingdom Come...something more fun. Rick Danko putting down somethin' slick --In a Station...kind of a jangly/janky 60s harmonies thing. unfortunately. their harmonies aren't nearly as tight as, say, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Byrds, or really anyone else of their era --Caledonia Mission...light and fun --The Weight...was very much not into this up until now. this is classic --We Can Talk...I like the organ work --Long Black Veil...pleasant cover --Chest Fever...rock organ opening. this is fun and feels surprisingly modern. Danko at it again --Lonesome Suzie...you don't have the voice for this, Richard --This Wheel's on Fire...this one's weird. not sure in a good way, but it's different --I Shall Be Released...sleepy closer
Pleasant enough, the Bob Dylan tracks do stand out
#2 from The Band for me and I have to say I'm kind of disappointed today. I mean The Band is fine, but not anything I would pick myself. Maybe I'd be more excited if I was 30 years older.... Ok so who starts off your first album with such a slow dirge-y sounding song. Like, this is the first impression you're making on the world and you choose this as the leading song? What the hell man? The Weight is a decent song. I don't mind Chest Fever. The rest of this album is totally forgettable and I hate how prominent the organ is through this whole record. I feel like whatever made this relevant when it came out doesn't exist anymore. 2/5
Kinda boring
“The Weight” is a classic. The rest is fine. Not memorable, though.
Yet another rough one to get through at times, hopefully my luck can change because it's been a while since I've found an entry I've clicked with
Llegas a la mitad y se vuelve repetitivo y sin sabir
A bit slow, it's giving background music again. Drags on a little bit. I want to quickly skip through it.
i am a genz so it was a bit hard for me to listen to this shi but i kinda enjoyed some songs like the weight , chest fever and long black veil
"The Weight" is hands down the best song on the album by several miles. I did enjoy "Long Black Veil" for its storytelling and "Chest Fever" for its crunchy Lowrey organ as well but the only song worthy of carrying to my daily playlist is "The Weight". I also think the album cover is quite humorous. It's a sleepy 4/10 for me.
There was live instruments which gets it to a two. Beyond that nothing stuck to make it a 3
I find myself sitting back in a leather chair in a hazy, dimly lit room, sipping brandy while the whole room stares, transfixed at the spotlit performer. I'm enchanted by this album. The music is positioned in a strange place, with hints of showtune, western, pop, and everything in between, but always feels intentional, controlled, and beautiful. It playfully toes the lines of many genres, never fully crossing further than it can reel itself back. k.d.'s voice grounds the experience, rising and falling to match the musical performance. This is the type of stuff we should have been getting from the 90s, not most of the beige dad rock, and I can hear the influences on modern artists like Weyes Blood and Laufey. This is a balanced, restrained amount of genre blending and showtune influence that albums like Meat Loaf's Bat out of Hell lacked.
Ничего плохого, но и хорошего мало
Favourite tracks: Lonesome Suzie, This wheel’s on fire
I have never been a fan of the song The Weight which was the only song I knew on this album. I don’t like the lead singer’s voice. It was way better than the French hard rock I had to listen to yesterday though.
boring
Nah
a interesting song with synths, but another band that sounds indistinguishable from something like Grateful Dead. Maybe they were influential, but I fail to see that in the sea of other rock albums that feel as lackluster
Didn't really resonate with me. Just not a fan of The Band
It was an ok album, I like “the weight”, other than that, not a lot to get excited about…
A little more variety than the other album. but yeah, nah, not for me.
One review said this is the start of Americana! So that's what Americana is? A couple of gems stuck in a load of keech pap! Two only because the gems are gems.
158.ok
"The Weight" is decent, but The Band doesn't really speak to me.
So, if it wasn't for the fact that this album seems mixed with the intention of making me go crazy because it's left and right and not stereo, it would be at least three stars. however I genuinely thought I was gonna get hard of hearing.
The weight is clearly the best song, but you can hear aspects of other his in some of the the tunes… but they don’t really stick with you.
Why does the band have two albums on this list? I mean, I hope there are only two and I don't have to listen to them anymore. YES, THIS IS THE LAST TIME, OH THANK GOD! This is so inoffensive that I have no idea what my opinion on it is. It is like I have listened to nothing in the sense that I have no afterthoughts. There was no song I liked outright and no song I hated; nothing. I actually need a second listen to choose my favorite and least favorite songs because I have no idea. It is not bad; it is just not my taste at all. If I liked this genre, I think this would be a good album, especially for a debut, but rating it based on how much I enjoyed it, I am going to be frank: not so much. The Weight is overrated, that is all I have to say. Why is it the hit? I have no idea, honestly. The first six songs or so sound the same; I just don't like this record. There is some diversity, but it is scarce. For example, Lonesome Suzie is a ballad that could be relaxing if it weren't for the way his voice cracks or shakes or whatever. Maybe he does that on purpose, I don't know and I don't care; I just don't like it. I don't remember their other album that well, but I think it was better than this. Favorite song(s): Chest Fever, Long Black Veil Everything in between: meh Least favorite song(s): This Wheel's on Fire
I've heard covers some of these songs before which I think are better. Just kind of boring
as a child did u ever go to like, the wedding of an uncle or a parents' friend or somethin? and as it got later into the night at the reception afterwards the music dived fully into this slow, kinda sad-sounding rock to get all the couples onto the dancefloor? that feels like the vibe here. its somber music for all the older blokes and their spouses to get down to slow style on the scuffed wooden floors of the event space at the local working men's club after a few too many glasses of prosecco. maybe that's mean but i guess the point im trying to make is that this is music that probably hit a lot better if u were there when it was fresh, but for me it's hard to see as more than just a familiar and very specific type of inoffensive background music. no matter how hard i try to lock in it just finds its way into the background again every time. "the weight" is the only track that caught my attention and it's because i'd heard part of it before in "still here" by girl talk, which is a much more interesting context for the vocal imo. it's not necessarily a bad album musically, like i'm not gonna get pissed off if someone puts it on or whatever, but it feels impossible to really just sit and listen to without getting distracted because it's simply not that interesting. i kinda just don't care about it, yknow? sorry....
Því miður ekki minn tebolli. Reyndi
no me gusto. 2 puntos.
boring new vegas radio-type slop
I own this one, probably for The Weight cause not much else did it for me.
There’s two dominant vibes to The Band: the innocent, free ideal of a group of friends hanging out and making music together, almost as a secondary concern. The other, the most cloying sentimentality. Occasionally I can get past the latter and embrace the former, an experience I’ve participated in and seen in emulated in countless bands from Pavement and Wilco to pre-2010s Kanye. But it is so infrequent.
It's very boring, that's my overriding feeling on this one. There's some tracks on here that are quite nice (Lonesome Suzie, I Shall Be Released) but it's not enough to move the needle. It's mostly just very dull, with several tracks thrown in that I kind of know and have heard before.
Por cada canción escuchada me dormí 10 veces
The band never really clicks for me. Certainly talented and has its place but I can't seem to engage with it.
Alright album. Not my cup of tea, felt it was a lil slow. Chest Fever was my favorite tho. 4.7/10.
I can appreciate that it exists, but it's not really my style of music.
I’ve heard this before. There are a some good songs on here but mostly it’s bland country rock by a canadian pretending to be from the south in the most effected fake accent possible. The more folk songs are better than the country rock songs but it’s not enough to save this album.
le nom du groupe est un peu présomptueux pour une musique somme toute assez générique des années 60. C'est bon mais pas mémorable.
surely for the year this was great. Not my thing really. Not sure why kermit the frog is singing in long black veil but I dig it.
FAVS: Caledonia Mission We can talk Chest fever PEORES To kingdom come Long black veil The weight
Isosta pinkistä tuleva The Yhtyeen musiikki ei vakuuttanut mua oikein mitenkään. Semmosta vähä hajutonta/mautonta.
There is probably a reason why I've only heard one of the songs from this album before. The Weight is a good song. The others are not. They range from OK to bad. All in all a disappointing listen in my opinion.
The Weight is iconic, Chest Fever was pretty fun, but this isn't my jam. Nothing against it.
No esta mal. Muy relax
"The Band" has the same energy as "the product". Not interested
An album almost as forgettable as the name "The Band". Very strained vocals are distracting in the best of parts, and there's not much musically happening to keep my interest. One solid hidden gem in Chest Fever, but not much else worth your time
Kind of a classic rock vibe, there are other albums i would rather listen to. some songs again are decent but nothing that screams out to me / 2.9
listened to this like 7 years ago when i was in my classic rock phase… used to really like chest fever i think ??? idk love the album cover and i hate the weight.. that song actually makes me want to kms i can’t stand it
i found this to be kind of sloppy? idk i don’t get the hype
The craftmanship is there, Performace, writing and mixing wise. But like many albums on this project, the music doesn't really have a lasting appeal. For non musicians there isn't much here to hold on to, nothing groundbreaking, memorable or unique. Just performance.
Nice vibes. One standout song.
Most music has always come out of Len Houmous’ big pink. 2.4 9/11 Lonesome Suzie
Not quite my preferred style of old timey music.
Ça m'épuise. 2.49 étoiles
I’m so bored.
Ho hum. Bluesy rock. Nothing earrh shattering. Although now I know where the Ab Fan theme tune is from.
Nice aber bisschen lw und eintönig
Meh... The Weight is a classic I suppose, but the rest of the album is very average.
hmm

Boring
these vocals are in the wrong decade. i guess they sound like Zappa's bluesier singing, but they also evoke whiny landfill indie rock. anyway i kinda fuck with the lullaby-like qualities. very sleepy music at its best. at its worst it emulates the worst qualities of white guy blues rock. not bad, but i'm not really partial to this sound. deserves to be one of the 1001? sure
Snoozefest
This is very leaden. Devoid of any melodies. Very worthy. All of them can play and sing but it's nothing I need or want to listen to.
I didn't really like the last The Band album that showed up for me, and its more of the same this time around. Don't know what it is about these guys but I just can't connect to them. I will say I liked this debut album a bit better than their second album, The Band. Standouts on this listen were "The Weight" - yeah, you've heard this one - aaaand that's kinda it. Nothing else grabbed me at all. Shoutout to the really subtle horn on a couple tracks that absolutely sounds like a giant slow fart. Lovely. Big Pink is just slow and clunky for me. I dont love it. Didn't really enjoy any part of this listen that much. 2/5.
Other than "The Weight" this is so, so boring.
Wirklich hart langweilig, da bleibt gar nichts hängen. Der Einstieg ist besonders zäh.
I was looking forward to this but what a let down. Nothing comes close to The Weight. Didn’t give a second go.
Decent enough songs and perfectly fine to listen to but a bit too MOR for my tastes. Halfway through, yeah this is boring as shit tbh 4 songs left, just want it to end now, this is painful. Picked up a bit with Long Black Veil and Chest Fever, then back to an absolute dirge with Lonesome Suzie. Oh it's the Ab Fab song, but a way worse version than the one that was in the show. Want to give this 1.5, but I want to be positive so going 2. But it's a low 2
Not realize potential. They dont find a good sound.
God damn this album is mid. I'm convinced if it wasn't for "The Weight" and the ties to Dylan this album wouldn't be on this list.
2.5
Didn’t have any strong feelings either way
Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5

I get their impact and influence, but I've just never been able to get into the Band
Not great. Kind of terrible. I couldn't listen in the car. Had to finish the record as background music while I worked, and even then I wasn't happy about it.
First listen Saved 4/11 Top track: The Weight
The Band are so revered amongst musicians, to be honest though I’d never really heard much of them apart from watching the last waltz. Listening to this start to finish I think I was a little underwhelmed. What I’ve realised so far doing this list is there are many bands & artists that are technically gifted, but what makes a 5 star album in my opinion is the technical skill and the je ne sais quoi that makes songs memorable/catchy and make you want to listen on repeat indefinitely. There wasn’t really anything I heard that made want to revisit this album
Snooze
Ok background listening
2.5. Not rly my thing
The album is really mediocre; I don't like it. It's boring.
Made ok background music but nothing more than that.
Kinda surprised that I don’t like this more since I’m such a Dylan fan? At least ‘The Weight’ is on here. Let’s just say it does a lot of heavy lifting on this album. The other tracks are meandering and don’t really stick with me.
The first half of this didn't do anything for me! I've never really loved The Weight, so I guess it's not surprising. After The Weight, though, I enjoyed it a bit more. Still, 2.5 stars.
1 or 2 good songs but not my favorite
“I pulled into Nazareth”
ENOUGH de folk american rock
The Band is a group that I have heard songs of but couldn’t tell you what they are. I recognized a couple on this album. To me nothing makes them stand out amongst others 2.5
I wasn't too keen on this, just not my thing. Shit name too Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ in part Default ❌️ ★★☆☆☆ (4/10) Total reviewed : 202 Already owned : 44 Purchased : 8 To buy list : 6 Nope : 144
not terrible but not my speed
A few good songs with Shall be Released and weight being.the best. Rest of album not really my cup.of tea
This album feels very middle of the road. The arrangements are interesting enough to hold my attention but not enough to grow fondly of. The vocal performance feels like he's giving it everything he's got but still coming across flat. I can see some appeal here but it feels pretty forgettable to me.
Meh
2.5 stars I always felt like I had to like this because hipster guys would love singing along to “The Weight” in high school. But it’s just fine. I don’t care more for it than I need to and i won’t really listen to this again.
bueno pero me aburro perdon
This album sounded like a mix of Randy Newman and The Rolling Stones, was not a fan.
not bad but not special. made me wanna listen to bob instead
While I respect the artistry for sure I just think sonically I don’t love their sound I find it abrasive in a way I don’t connect with
I've been told The Band is good. I've been told they are great even. I don't get it. I've had both of their albums on the list and just don't get it. It's kinda boring and bland. I was told to give it another chance but I don't want to.
Maso
Fine I guess but I'm not too fussed
Meh
I just can't get into this. I knew the song "The Weight", which is okay. It's a bit folky, a bit country, and it comes down on the wrong side of that divide for me. I find it hard to take their music seriously.
In the track Caledonia Mission I really like the piano riff but apart from that all quite boring to be fair
Most enjoyable songs ------------ * The Weight * Long Black Veil * I shall be released ------------ vocals ain't sharp enough for me
Yawn.
Decent folk rock. Horrible vocals. Maybe a band, but not the band.
Long black veil, The Weight and I Shall be Released highlights but I wouldn't seek out the other songs for a listen again.
Soulful vocals with a lot of depth and emotion. Also liked the keyboard throughout the album with it really hitting in Chest Fever. Overall decent album but not for me. 4/10. Favorite Song: Chest Fever
a lot of bob dylan, wouldnt say this was rock. Felt very much country, not for me.
OK, a little reminiscent of the Beatles at times. I know one of the tracks of this album, but a bit slow for me
Was a bit underwhelming and a tad monotonous.
just not really exceptional
This wasn’t my cup of tea but I can see the talent. I did not like how difficult it was to hear the singer. The sound seemed off and that affected my enjoyment. I did not listen to t
It didn't do much for me
okej je bio
Alright.
Not super interesting to me. Very late 60s mellow country Dad rock. 2 ⭐️s
In one ear out the other
At least the writing's good, I guess...
This album doesn't resonate with me at all. Just because an album came from the 60s doesn't mean that is automatically good. I kind of struggled my way through this one.
Not a The Band fan, man. You can keep your load.
Kann man gut hören, aber auch nicht der burner (für mich persönlich)!
4/10 Knowing and enjoying The Band's second album before listening to this, I was hoping for a bit more of the same. Folksy music with a good groove, a bit of grit and drive and some decent hooks to engage the obvious talent of the players. Unfortunately, this album very much feels like they hadn’t quite worked out how to combine all of their obviously talented ingredients into a completely satisfying dish. There are moments when things really hook up, particularly towards the end of side one, with Caledonia Mission and The Weight, and they really show the direction of travel towards their second album, but much of the rest of the album is a little bit too disorganised and lacking in focus for my taste. They’re obviously a talented band and the playing is, for the most part, great. But there are too many moments where they kind of end up getting a bit too wayward and drifting around in a way that I’m sure some pople enjoy, but wasn’t really tight enough to satisfy my ear. There were also moments where things just became a little too dull and uninspiring. When they land on exactly the right vibe of a track, the vocals can actually work quite well, but when thy miss that, they can end up distracting rather than complimenting the music. The last track, for example, is a really pretty little song, but the vocal just doesn’t work and actually drags the rest of the song back with it, which is a shame. Perhaps part of this is that the genre that this leans towards is not one that I particularly connect with, and the transition to a more groove and rock oriented tone on the follow up just sits a bit more sweetly in my ear, but while I enjoyed moments here, it’s not one that’s really going to stick with me. Tears Of Rage - There’s a laid back cool to this. It’s certainly full of vibe, and there are some really nice moments, but it’s perhaps a little too dragging in pace for me. It has a pretty clear structure underneath it, but it all feels a bit too unfocused over the top of that. There are moments when things all tie up together, but it all seems quite samey and a little meandering at the same time. To Kingdom Come - There’s a bit more pace to this and it’s got a bit of an old school R&B edge to it, but that's a bit dulled by the strained vocal. Again, there are moments that I like, but there’s nothing about it that really grabs me and sticks in my mind. I like the vibe, but the execution just doesn’t quite connect with me. In A Station - It’s a very twee start. This feels a bit more focused and structured in the verse and it feels like it’s building to something, but then the chorus just doesn’t deliver. I was expecting it to launch into something, but it all stays at a very similar level. Unfortunately, that just makes it a bit too drifting and dull and it never really deviates at all from that fairly middle of the road tone. Caledonia Mission - This starts off at a similar pace and feel to the previous track, but then it modulates around really nicely and actually switches up into something pretty jazzy and far more satisfying into the chorus. The lilt and groove of this also plays more into the vocal stylings of Rick Danko. There are some really solid, groovy riffs in this and there's nice variation between the different sections which evolve nicely and create the most satisfying song on the album thus far. The Weight - And now we’ve hit our stride. There’ a solid, hooky chorus, some really great playing and it feels like everyone is pulling in the same direction. There are some great moments from the piano, but everyone does a great job. It’s got a great groove and the instrumentation has a clarity that was missing on some of the earlier tracks. The structure of the group vocals are really well done too. Great track. We Can Talk - Some nice organ work to kick us off here and it’s another where things feel more focused to begin with, but we start losing focus a bit part way through. There are some nice moments with some solid hooks, but it feels a little more meandering between those sections of quality. It’s not bad, but it gets a little lost in its own journey for me. Long Black Veil - This is a bit more plodding. The structure of it is a bit more focused, but it’s not the most inspiring or exciting of songs. It has some nice enough moments, but it’s just a bit on the dull side. Another where they’re executing the idea really well, but the idea itself just doesn’t really connect with me. Chest Fever - This feels like we’re going to get something with a bit more fire to it, but it never quite delivers on that promise. It’s got a decent groove to it, but it never really lifts off n the way I’d hope. And then half way through they just start doing something a bit weird and disconnected for no reason, before returning to the theme. It actually picks up a little after that, but it in general feels a little bit unstructured and disconnected in places. The bones of something pretty good are actually in here, I think, but I don’t think it’s been fleshed out in a particularly satisfying way. Lonesome Suzie - And we’re back to something a bit more focused. It’s actually quite pretty and well put together and they stick to the theme and structure throughout. I’m not completely sold on the vocal, but it has an edge of vulnerability that works to a certain degree. A pretty decent track. This Wheel's On Fire - Another slightly muddled track. Things move pretty nicely through the verses. There’s a good groove, some great playing and a solid vibe to it, but then the chorus just… doesn’t deliver at all. The intensity drops and it’s just a bland, plodding distraction from the work that’s been done during the verses, which is really disappointing. I Shall Be Released - And it’s quite a nice track to close us out that’s not as nice as it should be because the vocal is way too strained in places. Listening to the instrumental behind it, it’s got a great vibe and is really well put together, but the vocal just distracts too much and doesn’t work at all with the delicate nature of the rest of the song. It’s a shame, but it kind of sums up my feeling about this album in general. A lot of potential, some good ideas, but the way that things are put together and executed just doesn’t really deliver on that promise.
Meh
Boring
The weight is good, Chest Fever surprised me. The rest weren't memorable.
Oh, The Weight is great, although the album overall feels very bland to me. It's definitely skillful, but just very unexciting.
Listened to it yesterday and can't remember a single thing about it.
I really don’t understand multiple inclusions from this group. You really just need to hear the Weight, and even that isn’t mind blowing. Just super well known.
2.5
Dumb name dumb album
Soulful Beatles
The Weight is solid but the rest of it all blended together for me
Can't remember. Twas nice, but eh.
Meh. 1,5/5
