lost interest

I think I'm just at the point now where I accept that I'm not clever enough to understand most of what Bowie did. The rockier numbers on this had me thinking it might be an improvement. It's not, despite Gene Genie obviously being rather good. I'm sure it's fabulous, but Bowie leaves me cold.

Upbeat electronic songs are good. The slow stuff is less fun.

you know, I came into this project knowing I was gonna hear a lot of David Bowie, and I was really excited because I wanted to like it. But I really don't get it. I know it's popular and its niche and I don't want to be contrarian for no reason but, the music just seemed to not resonate with me. It just seems like drunk singing with some good instrumentals but not for me.

Never got around to give Bowie a proper listen before. Sadly to say, it's just not my cup of tea. While some parts are definitely beautiful this is just not the kind of music that makes me feel much. I just don't get what the fuss is about. Hope I'll get an epiphany later in life but today was not the day.

Ever since The Next Day album I have started to really dislike Bowie's music. This is not an exception. Kind of annoying

Not my favorite Bowie experience

Bowie is so hard for me to like. I really don't know what it is but his music doesn't speak to me at all. I am not in my Bowie era, maybe one day I will be.

Lento, corto, senza brani particolarmente memorabili

David Bowie is a little too experimental for my taste. Some of his songs are absolutely great, but a lot of the B-sides I don't particularly enjoy. Watch that man was a good, old-school, rock song, but Aladdin Sane has a jazz solo that I didn't enjoy and found grating. Drive-In Saturday is fairly repetitive and forgettable. Panic in Detroit is just as repetitive with a George of the Jungle style drum mix and screeching guitars. I don't think I'll be finishing this album.

Noisy mess. Vocal is too low in the mix in the first half of the album.

Pop. But too, I don’t know, chaotic for me? Also I didn’t like the production, could hardly hear the vocals over the instruments.

Bowie is the most represented artist on this list, right? I like Bowie on average, but surely there is too much Bowie. This one, for example: not good! A lesser Ziggy, with a worse concept. What if there were two wolves inside you? What if fame were a double edged sword?? Really makes you think… Anyway outside of Jean Genie this is inessential Bowie, let alone music in general!

Well, I am now resigned to listening to the entire Bowie recording catalog by the end of this project, if I make it to the end. All have been definitely worthy of being in the list so far (e.g. Low, Blackstar). This one, not so much. To me, this was only an average effort.

Ugh this has been really disappointing with Bowie thus far. I think someone said this on one his previous albums but I had the same issue with hearing him on a few songs, like something was weird with the production. The dissonance on Aladdin Sane song was painful to listen to and went on far too long. Jean genie was pretty good

Skipping

The title track is a fucking mess.

Meh, I know it’s a big deal classic and all but it’s only okay.

Didn't finish, got kinda bored after a while. Didn't sound too different from other things I've heard before. Don't want to hate since I didn't fully listen, so probably 5/10

Interesting album, but Freek and Bowie is not a good combination

‘Twas strange and chaotic

It was ok but doesn't hit as I imagine it did when it was first released. I don't dislike it but I am not gonna rush to listen again.

Not my thing. David Bowie being David Bowie, I guess, but not something I would choose to listen to again.

Couldn’t get into this album. Listened to the entire thing.

I just don't like it.

David Bowie songs tend to be hot or cold for me and this album is mostly full of freezing ones.

Didn't love this one. That one song that's intentionally dissonant drove me crazy.

Some of the instrumentation on this is interesting, but in the end the writing, vocals and production are all Bowie - pretty yech for me.

#472. At this point, I expect very little from Bowie, that way I'm not disappointed. 2/5: shit

Not my favorite.

Do not like Aladdin Sorry B Money this ones a no from me

The more David Bowie I listen to the more I realize I either really really like his music or reallllyyy don't. This unfortunately leans more in the latter column. It sounds like a school play gone wrong. Or like when a younger sibling puts on a performance, but you do find yourself admiring the creativity. 3.5/10 (1.75/5)

Überraschenderweise gar nicht meins

Was never my taste but is okay

Not really a Bowie fan in the first place. Couldn't find a stylistic difference from Ziggy Stardust. Maybe will come back and listen if Bowie grows on me.

Not particularly a famous of this era for Bowie.

I still don't get how revered Bowie is. This is the fourth (I think) album of his on this list, and only one of them was what I'd consider a good album. Sadly, this album is not that one.

Why are people obsessed with David Bowie?

Probably the best of David Bowie I've heard since starting these one albums a day. Starts off with a bit of pop rock and then turns to contemporary pop rock. I'm still not a fan of David Bowie and don't think I ever will be, but yea this one is better than the last two albums of his we listened too. "Cracked Actor" is probably his best song I've heard... Actually "Time" isn't too bad either.

AGAIN - 3rd day in a row of David Bowie - Enough already. This was the pick of the 3 albums. Still not good. Please no more Bowie.... PLEASE

2/5 The album starts of good with the song "Watch that man". But loses all the things set in motion with the album titled song "Aladdin Sane". It does not fit well compared to the song before and has a piano solo so dissonant it sounds like it couldve been written by the stand up comedian Jon Benjamin. After a few mediocre songs, the album only picks itself up the last few songs. "The Jean Genie" and "Lady Grinning Soul" are great songs on their own. However, it is too late and the mess cannot be salvaged by now. To me this album is a miss.

Couldn't finish the album personally. Titular track was cacophonous, but the song "Time" was more manageable. Heard better stuff from David Bowie, but then again, his Ziggy Stardust era wasn't my favorite anyways.

I understand the appeal of David Bowie. I’m just not a fan. Once again very talented, just not my thing.

I just find him boring

Troche posłuchałem, no był w porządku Prettiest Star mi sie podobało i Time, w niektorych piosenkach dla mnie za długa forma troszeczke lub za malo wokalu

whatever girl

It’s half-good. There is certainly some insane piano playing. If tattoos had been a thing back when I was in high-school, the cover graphic would probably be on my body somewhere. 2.5 stars.

Very dated. A couple of very good tracks but not for me.

Not my favorite Bowie album, only a few good songs rest of the album is weak

In my opinion, this is gleefully wallowing in self-indulgence and pretentiousness, and I especially had a hard time with the piano on this. I really just think Bowie is not for me.

Nope, none for me. This one is just. Not like the rest. Earlier albums had direction, sound, "cool." This one is a last gasp for the Era. Bloated with sound that doesn't do it and a stones cover? On to the next era.

I know David Bowie is such an iconic artist but I just don't get into him. I'm gonna have to cut it short. 2 stars.

Rock opera and English rock and roll, two genres which really don't do it for me. It sounds like the Stones attempts at blues/gospel, which is also crap. Fair enough he was on tour in the US and influenced by the American sound, but it falls flat where Ziggy soared.

every new david bowie album i get on here, i learn that i really don't care for his music outside of the big singles. this album is a whole lot of nothing. sometimes it's fine and the songs are just like, suffragette city-esque b-sides like the rest of his songs where he thinks he's really jamming, but some like the title track are just him trying to be challenging and see how much his fans will put up with before getting up and turning off the record player. ultimately there's nothing really notable here and it's more a waste of time than anything. no thanks david. favorites: panic in detroit, let's spend the night together (which is a cover, lol)

I could say I’m sorry but I’m not his voice is just annoying. I can only tolerate a certain amount

meh. it's another David Bowie concept album.

I'm just not into Bowie enough to make it through another album. I tried and failed

Glam Rock reminding me vaguely of a rock opera, like The Rocky Horror Picture Show while missing the iconic pictures.

I really like The Jean Genie, but the rest of it does nothing for me so 2 stars or D+ is my rating.

I loved 2 songs on this album and loathed 2 songs. Everything else was meh

Meh? Better than what came later but nothing standout.

Really not his best work A bit disappointed

Third Bowie album so far and it is my least favourite of those three. He is becoming an artist I am less excited to listen the more I listen.

Glad to have listened to this album once. Not something I would listen to again.

Not a fan of dissonant jazz elements. I prefer Bowie's rock influenced albums.

My 6th Bowie album so far and my response is pretty much the same as the others. Bowie is solid, but not great here. I'm waiting to hear a cohesive album from him that really blows me away.

Way too weird for me

Not my jam but I do appreciate David Bowie. 2

It's funny that this is such an iconic album cover, because it really doesn't seem to be Bowie's best work. Just honestly okay.

I used to like David Bowie a lot more, and maybe if I return to his later stuff I will still enjoy it. But I really did not find much here to enjoy!

never ever been one of my fav bowie albums and have never quite got what people like about this one... its a mess and really an anomaly for me considering I like nearly all of bowie's other work...

Another hackneyed Bowie album? Ugh.

I have really enjoyed some bowie albums but this one is not it :(

I guess Bowles entire discography is on here. As much as I’ve heard I’ve still never been really hooked by any. Awesome dude tho

Didn’t really enjoy this album. It seems fun and lively, but not really my cup of tea.

Not very interesting

Can't seem to warm up to Bowie. This album's most popular song, The Jean Genie, is just a generic Blues Rock track. There are some weird Jazz and Piano pieces spread around. Basic 70s synth tunes. The best thing for me was the realization that the title is a pun.

1. man - 1 2. aladdin - 1 3. drive in - 1 4. detroit - 1 5. actor - 1 6. time - 1.5 7. ztar - 1.5 8. night - 1.5 9. jean genie - 2 10. zoul - 1.5

At first, it seemed like a whole new Bowie album to me because I’d never heard it before. Then, Jean Genie came on and then all I could think about was what a shit album it was with only one good song. So I thought that maybe it was because I was familiar with only one song that I liked it. I then listened to the album again, and have now put the other songs into the category of forgettable. I could hear them again for sure and still recognise them as Bowie, but still think of them as lacklustre at best. Maybe I’m not as big of a fan as I thought. That technically makes me not a fan. I now like the song Jean Genie less too. Thanks. Way to ruin a good song Bowie, don’t do it again. 2 stars, and if I hear it again I’ll vote it 1 star. 1 dark star.

I like Bowie. I did not like this album.

Of its time.

Another Bowie album. He's definitely leading the appearance stats now. Either in title, or lurking in the background. All solid, but again it left me a bit cold. I'm yet to succumb to the brilliance of his works. I know he's good, but I just haven't ever been drawn in enough to be enveloped. A 2.5 rounded down.

I’m done with Bowie

Bowie was not my favorite artist.

This one just doesn't do much for me.

I just can't get excited over this

I found this one lacking

Perhaps it was just my mood when listening to it, but I couldn't get into the album. I appreciate Mr. Bowie as an artist and the album has a lot of character, which I do enjoy very much, but for the music itself it was unfortunately a miss this time.

What's with this crazy piano playing? I thought I was on a Bowie album not in a jazz bar at a carnival. Ok, it's glam and it's jam but it's not cohesive at all. This album is not my fave but the cover art is so iconic. It really makes you rethink an album art's importance overall and I wish I liked this record more. This was a miss for me because I don't even like "Jean Genie."

Another meh one from Bowie. I only liked Jean Genie...the rest are all pretty skippable. Cover is iconic with Bowie looking like a weirdo. I guess you had to be there to get why it's on the list...1.75.

As much of a Bowie fan I am there are better albums by him. I imagine the aftermath of Ziggy Stardust and Bowie's rise to stardom at the time is a huge reason this is held in high regard. It's not a bad album but there isn't anything special beyond the imagery of the Aladdin Sane album cover. A couple of songs are decent but overall the album is relatively "meh". This is probably one of the the albums that deserves to be brought up in discussion (mainly as a follow up to Ziggy) but probably doesn't belong on any must-listen lists. 2.30 stars

Disappointing. I'm a fan of David Bowie and heard this was his best. Absolutely disagree

Just not my jam

Just an OK record from my perspective. It was fine but if I'm honest I didn't find anything really inspiring or impressive here.

Bowie is mid to start, and this is mid-mid.

This album was very difficult for the first 3 songs when it picked up and became tolerable. i respect Bowie as an icon, but in regards to his music, apart from the one song : sound and vision (which is one of the most wonderful songs ever-not on this album) I have rarely enjoyed any of his music (oh of course don’t forget Starman!)

Crazy bout Bowie. Ziggy. The Duke. Pretty sane for Aladdin.

Not my style

Stop giving me Bowie albums. I DON'T GET IT.

There is an awful lot of Bowie on this list

I want to be cool and like David Bowie… but I just can’t get into it. It actually started really well with watch that man. And I thought that I’d like the whole album. But then it got more experimental and nothing flowed for me. I just couldn’t get into it. Call me a basic bitch I guess.

It was OK. There were some strong contenders like drive in Saturday in panic in Detroit. But the album did feel like a concept that they try to do in multiple ways which sounded repetitive. And some of the actual piano was so disjointed, that it made the groove unpleasant such as Aladdin sane. Ziggy started us is my favorite Bowie album.

Bowie - vielseitig. Manches ikonisch - anderes verstehe ich nicht …

A boring Bowie album. Now I’ve heard everything.

Warum nimmt der sich so ernst? Die Musik macht nicht Spaß. Eine Effekthaschereimusikshow. Was gibt mir das?

I know everyone was enamored with Bowie in the 70s and this was his signature/most iconic look. But so far I don’t see the hype. Drive-in Saturday is a good track. I don’t get the hype.

This album is so weird. I want to like it buy I just don't know

This is the sound of too much cocaine. I wish I could say that this is a good album, but it just isn't. There's not a single compelling track on this thing. Jean Genie might be the closest we get, but it's still utter nonsense. There isn't a single coherent idea to be found anywhere near this album.

While some of the songs were catchy and I enjoyed the guitar riffs, there were times where the sound was far to outlandish for my taste and I couldn’t get behind his voice. I don’t necessarily think this is a bad album, just maybe more a “you had to be there” type of album.

I feel like everyone around me loves Bowie. No matter how hard I try, I just can't get into his music. The excessiveness of glam rock just isn't for me.

4.5/10 the one song with the wrong notes fucking pissed me off

Aladdin sane was god awful. I hated it. Rest of the album was pretty alright. Would have gave it a 3 star if I didnt have to listen to Aladdin sane. Drive in Saturday 👌🏻 Cracked actor 👍🏻 Prettiest star 👌🏻 Lady grinning soul 👍🏻

Didn’t hate it, but didn’t really like it either.

It’s Bowie.

Wherein Bowie becomes, for better or worse, L’artiste. Not my favorite. Probably won't listen again.

The emotion is just not there for me lol. Some bob dylan 70s vibes on a few tracks which I guess is alright but I’d rather just listen to him. It’s too theatrical for me. The last song “lady grinning soul” packed a little bit more emotion (more of a typical dramatic “end of the film” Bowie vibe) but still wouldn’t really listen to any of it again. :( lol

Glammy

Not for me

I would expect to like it if someone described it to me, but I somehow didn’t feel it

I love Bowie, but if I got stuck on a desert island, and this was the only album I had, I’d drown myself.

Better than average. I wished I liked Bowie more than I do 2.9

deserves 2 at least solely for the cool album cover

You were not a true music head if you did not like Bowie....I guess I am not a true music head....not a Bowie fan. Did not enjoy this album.

Heel veel moeite mee. Uiteindelijk aangezet als achtergrond muziek. Helaas

Extremely disappointing. My dad's got the front cover to this album as a poster on the wall so I was expecting great things. Possibly the worst Bowie album I've heard. Nothing worth keeping, besides maybe the Stones cover.

Didn’t care for it - less melodic than I tend to prefer

Out of the 4 songs i listened to, i only liked jean genie

Meh. I like the more abstract Bowie. This version tried to be The Rolling Stones too hard.

Hmmmm. Not a patch on Ziggy stardust, I find DBs music quite dull overall

this album really shows how little one had to try to achieve “significance” in rock music, depressingly degenerate

This should have just been the album art as a poster. Music kind of boring.

If you'd asked me before starting the 10001 albums if I liked Bowie I'd have given a pretty unequivocal yes - but the more of his albums I listen to closely and completely the more I find him kind of tedious and annoying, with a few amazing songs scattered through a huge and hugely uneven catalogue. He's doing interesting stuff in pop culture, but I don't actually want to listen to most of most of his albums... This album opens with a Rolling Stones style honky tonk track with that tack piano sound and bluesy guitars. The title track is more distinctive, chaotic pianos and woozy unresolved vocals harmonies flit around a solid groove on the bass. Then there's one of his signature show tune style story-sining tracks. Panic in Detroit sounds like Ziggy Stardust: bright overdrive and hand-drums for an upbeat glam sound that and climaxes with a fun dueling/harmonizing guitars panned left/right section. The doubled guitar lead sound re-appears on Time, another broadway style song with some cool piano/guitar interplay that opens up into an intense gospel meets glam choral outro. Let's Spend the Night Together gets back to the high tempo honky-tonk piano & dirty guitars Rolling Stones sound for a horny high energy rave up. Jean Genie is back to the glam blues formula: harmonica and a I-IV-V chord progression with theatrical singing all about fame and sexuality. In a way, it doesn't make sense to rate this one as a discrete album. It's part of a whole multi-media project of film/video, stage performance, interviews etc through which he developed and played with this glam persona and carved out a space in pop culture and so much of that was responding to trends, styles, moods etc that would have made more immediate sense to a contemporary audience. It asks the important question, what if Mick Jagger was even more queer coded, but in a kind of space way? This album's meaning is so contingent on that multi-album multi-platform aesthetic project, that taken on its own outside of that context it isn't really that compelling: none of these are among his best songs and the sounds are all pretty familar stuff.

Not sure if I was just not in the mood, or I just didn't like this album, but it did nothing for me. Never really caught my attention.

I love the guitar work throughout most of Bowie's career, I just don't like when he sings over it throughout most of his career also.

This was not my favorite tbh. I kind of got bored at some parts, but then some parts just had too much going on

A poor man’s Ziggy Pop, which doesn’t make this a bad album, but given the amount of Bowie albums already on the list, this one can be skipped.

Hyvin amerikkalainen albumi - siinä mielessä, että tulee olo, että Rolling stones tekis tämän paremmin. Ei suosikkini Bowielta, vähän show-off.

Drive-In Saturday ei kelvannut Mottille, minkä ymmärrän hyvin. Paras biisi taas on aika epä-rock.

Didn’t like it.

Not totally in my wheelhouse. I know some people fawn over David Bowie but I feel like some songs were a complete mess. I do like "Let's Spend the Night Together," but not this album as a whole. Definitely has it's place in history though.

I didn't love this album. I hate to hate on classics. At the end of the day, classic rock is just not really my vibe.

It felt like we were on an upward trajectory with the 3 previous Bowie albums but this was mince. I couldnt tell you anything about any of the tracks.

Lady grinning soul är bra.

No thanks

Didn't like it that much. Sorry david

It's pretty good I wanted to like it more just because Bowie is great. Very epic in a literal sense, very anthemic and its much more enjoyable knowing just how many substances he's on as its almost a feature on every song. its weird but alright. Notable Songs: Drive-In Sat, Cracked Actor, Time, Lets Spend the Night Together, The Jean Genie

Not my cup

Maybe this album was revolutionary in 1973 but I am quickly learning that I do not like Bowie's body of work - it sounds very messy in a way that similar-sounding albums have tightened up. Granted other albums were probably very influenced by this style but it's not for me

Bowie wirkt absolut authentisch - 2/5

I am a Bowie fan and I did enjoy this album, but it wasn't my favorite.. A few tracks I loved on this thing were 'Drive-In Saturday', 'Time', 'The Jean Genie' and 'Lady Grinning Soul' but honestly, outside of these 5 tracks I didn't really enjoy much more than these.. now granted, thats half the album, but I don't know something about this album it just.. it felt like a few random tracks throw around a few more central focused songs, and to me I loved the few that I mentioned before but I wasn't the biggest fan of the album as a whole. I found myself struggling to fully finish this album, I don't know why.. I tried to give it a fair listen the whole way through a few times, but the middle of the album would usually lose me so instead I focused on the tracks that I did enjoy. Overall: 2.8/5

Not for me

not my style

Weird sound. Instruments I liked. Couldn’t get into it.

Not as bad as the other newer Bowie album we listened to, but kind of a chore to finish. A little too raunchy and drug-referencing for my tastes. Love the album cover though, a classic David Bowie look! Two stars.

Weird. I know David Bowie, I recognize the famous album cover, but I didn't recognize any of the songs. Nor did I particularly care for any of them.

Im beginning to realize I like less Bowie than I thought

I thought I was going insane during Aladdin Sane, desperately trying and failing to find and mute the browser tab playing that piano line.

Didn't like this as much as I hoped I would.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Not really, his other work is far clearer of this one Favourite song: Track 9 - The Jean Genie

Extremely odd album. Glam? Opera? Jazz? Strange mash up of genres. Def an interesting listen to but doesn’t need a second listen.

High-energy Bowie. Not bad, but rarely my vibe.

Didnt like it.

I love the style and what the album is going for, but it’s not for me; no songs really hit me well. But it’s great vocals and instrumentals. 4/10

Not Bowie's best album. I was not a big fan of most of the songs, including the cover of "Let's Spend the Night Together" that we didn't need. Tracks I liked: Watch That Man Time

Not a huge David Bowie fun but I did enjoy the song he did with Queen in the album.

A very underwhelming album, especially the first three songs. Aladdin Sane is a perfect example of clout overriding actual good work. I didn't see any of the good writing that Bowie is often praised for and most of the lyrics made little to no sense, neither lyrically nor logically. Perhaps a good album for when you're too tired to think and you want to turn your brain off and listen to woozy sounding instruments.

The more people gush about Bowie the more I seem to dislike him. I will concede Jean Genie is alright.

noisy and i am simply not very interested :-/

Not a Bowie fan

i just really dont like bowie

Well you can really never go wrong with Bowie. I wasn't very familiar with this I like it but it's not my favorite album.

I guess I just don't like David Bowie.

I tried the whole album and nothing stuck. I like Bowie's China Girl album 10 years later.

I keep trying with Bowie, he keeps failing.

Oh joy, oh rapture. More Bowie. The bassline to "Aladdin Sane starts out fun, turns into an 80s sax yawn then becomes rapidly awfu in its repetitiveness. Hey, the 80s sax continues onto later tracks too, fun. I'm entirely sure that Bowie was the first to put together so many of the things he "was influenced by" but as I've opined many times before in my reviews of his interminable ouvre, I could happily live the rest of my life not hearing him again. His cover of "Let's spend the night together" is irritating. Oh, plus bonus paedo lyric. This isn't a one star album, because it's mostly not actually offensive, but I can't say it's enjoyable.

When the only defining aspect of an album is its cover art, can we really consider it one of the best ever? Look I’m not a huge Bowie guy to begin with, but this album just doesn’t really belong on here. It was still good, don’t get me wrong, but nothing stood out. He’s pretty clever with the naming and the title track was silly with the slamming on the piano, but I don’t need to come back to any of these songs, nor did I need to listen to this album. Sorry, but not really.

I was super disappointed by this, give me more David Bowie rejects instead.

Pretty boring really, didn't do anything for me. Maybe if I was listening at the time of release this might've felt fresh, but nothing actually stood out for me with Aladdin Sane. Songs are fine (certainly good quality-wise) but unmemorable, and they don't make me feel anything and I don't have the urge to listen again.

Bit all over the place, far from his best seems like someone doing a parody at times

Eh, end was good

David Bowie albums are like a box of chocolates - You never know what you're gonna get. There have been Bowie albums that showcase his excellent songwrighting abilities. But his is not one of these albums. This is glam rock for the sake of it, without any exciting or original idea. The melodies, especially, are utterly forgettable on this one. Come to think of it, the rest really is as well. 2/5

Very old rock types, that I suppose I don't have the taste/palette for. Sadly all the songs on the album seem to almost blend together mostly. There was one song that was definitely meant to be provocative, gnashing elements fitted in to make it almost like noise, but still holding on to the music, that was the Aladdin sane song I think. (I didn't finish the album full disclosure lmao)

Love the dynamic instrumentation and vibes. Not a fan of vocals

Would Not listen top it again, but i get the appeal

Didn't think this was anything special

Aladdin Sane is more proof Bowie has some great singles but not many great albums. The Jean Genie is iconic. The rest is average. 2/5 on balance.

Didn't find it that interesting

David Bowie did not musically wow me on this album. But Bowie for the size of his catalog, doesn't wow me a ton musically. He does however export that artistry that supercedes his music. He's an entire experience. So this album in a vacuum is pretty mid for me but I don't hold it against Bowie at all because with him it was never just an album. Since I'm rating the music I have to be honest.

The Jean Genie I've heard before and it's good. The rest just went by. Not bad by any means but only one stand out song.

Repetitive and annoying

-pretty good songs just not my type I don’t think -wasn’t too into it

meh. album with a big hit and then some filler.

David’s just actin like a silly goose on this one. A little too silly

didnt do anything for me

Probably not the most exciting album couple of cool tracks like Jean genie but overall an underwhelming experience.

David Robert Jones picked his stage name from the bowie knife because, he claimed, “it cuts both ways.” I’ve been cut by David Bowie’s albums eight different times now, and I’m definitely had more than enough. Bowie doesn’t quite live up to his namesake blade, the one which Crocodile Dundee declared “no, this is a knife!” Through eight albums and many different iterations, I’m finally done with David Bowie. None of the iterations really do it for me. Not Ziggy Stardust, not the Thin White Duke, and not a lad insane. “Panic in Detroit” was pretty good, but overall “Aladdin Sane” was just too much glam for me. David Bowie is, though, better than BowieNet, the internet service provider he started in 1998, and Bowie Kuhn, the MLB commissioner who tried to prevent free agency. But higher ranking Bowies I can still tolerate include Bowie, Maryland (home of Bowie State University and the former Bowie Baysox). And the bowie knife. Still a good knife.

As with so many things Bowie, it’s overly affected and overdone. Ronson overplays and the shrill edge grates after just a few tracks. Major points off for the seriously misguided “Let’s Spend the Night Together” and the quite turgid “Jean Genie” the appeal of which has never been clear to me.

I think I missed the train on Bowie.

Pleasing tone but the voice and the character album thing don’t do it for me.

This artist is a referent but I had not heard much his songs.

Track 2 - Aladdin Sane needs to be torched to the ground and have its ashes burned a second time. Last song was beautiful

Other than the bangers the ironic rock n roll Saturday night vibe is not for me.

Bowie ain't for me. I recognize the contribution to pop music, but not for me.

I just don't see the appeal. It's not absolutely horrible, but I certainly wouldn't call it good either. A couple of decent songs, but mostly hot garbage.

This is the fifth David Bowie recommendation within 244 albums so far. The track "The Jean Genie" feels like a good representation of my opinion of Bowie's music as a whole. Talent is expressed in the music and it feels like rock and roll, but I could comfortably never listen to it again. "The Jean Genie" was the only familiar track for me. Most of the album was okay, but it's hard for the album to overcome putting my least favorite track, "Aladdin Sane", as the second track on the album. The track is long, weird, and full of jumbled noises. I don't want to listen to this album again.

Song 1 sounds like Elton John did it. Instruments almost drown out the singer. This album has become incredibly repetitive for me. Slow and non-changing drum beats in 4/4 time have me bored.

It's alright! Will relisten some time.

Honestly, it was a bit meh. I do like a lot of Bowie songs, but this album mad me feel like I was willing it to be good, but it just wasn't. 2/5

Hmm not his best stuff. Quite liked the rolling stones cover but even that's not as good as the original.

Don't see what the big fuss is all about with Bowie.

Another album done and still don’t get the fuss

Bar band Bowie? Bowie plays the pub? I don't know what this Bowie was going for, or what phase he was in (maybe good ol classic rock?), but I guess it doesn't matter. He's a legend but this one's a miss. C-

It was okay. A couple of good songs. I would rate this a 2.5

Pretty ok

Meh, not my thing

Cracked Actor was a cool song, didn't really enjoy the rest of the album. It's weird, but not in a good way.

this song doesnt sound like an opener. second song is nice. oh its the title track. piano carrying this song hard by making it a lil weird and unsettling. most songs are boring not awful but boring. i've heard 'lets spend the night together' on the radio before. well im done. i liked some parts or aspects of some songs but overall i wouldnt want to listen to this again.

Not real familiar with Bowie, to be honest. It has that classic rock sound that doesn't do a lot for me.

Glad I listened to this, I would've assumed that I'd really rate anythin by Bowie given how popular he is but this really isn't my kinda thing. Jean Genie is a good track but prob only cos I recognise it. 2/5

Ok songs

Some of the songs were okay, as long as he stays away from the psychedelic intermezzos sometimes featured.

If I have to be honest, this is really not my cup of tea. No songs that gave me energy, and some songs even made me frustrated.

Not for me

That’s a lot of cocaine

The guy so nice, we get albums twice. After Bowie’s first outing I was hoping it would be longer than week before I reviewed another one but the universe has other plans. Watch That Man sounded like I was listening to the prior Stone’s album. Ok David is going pretty wild on the piano on the title track, and it sounds like how I play the piano so that’s a skipper. Drive-In Saturday sounds like the song that plays at the end of a TV show I would have turned off before the ending. Panic in Detroit had a line about a teacher wearing overalls so that’s that. Cracked Actor doesn’t sound bad but I’m getting pretty upset that so many albums so far have been three stars or below. For a “Top Albums” list, I’m wondering when we are going to get to the good stuff. Pretty funny that there is a song on this album called The Prettiest Star but his last album was Blackstar…this is rough. Let’s Spend the Night Together sounds like Saturday Nights Alright for Fighting and they are the same amount of words but I bet you can guess which I like more. Oh look he is being punny, The Jean Genie. If I had a genie right now I bet you can guess what my first wish would be. Lady Grinning Soul sounds kind of like White Rabbit. Please understand, I really like David Bowie, some of his songs are some of the best, but this is the second album of his that I have kind of to barely liked. I guess I’m just A Lad Insane.

A good album, but it takes a while to develop.

Fands ned gut :(

good enough, probably wouldn't listen to again.

More rock’n’roll than I expected, definitely sets the Bowie style

Not my cup of tea. Sounds like the 70s for sure, I can definitely see why Bowie fans love the album but it doesn't pique my interest after the first couple songs so eh.

Not a Bowie fan.

Not my favorite Bowie album, with much less standout songs than previous one (Ziggy Stardust)

Eh Recently listened to Ziggy Stardust, enjoyed it a lot more.

idk just didnt feel it

I know this is art...but I just can‘t appreciate it for what it is.

72h myöhemmin en muista mitään levystä. Kertonee tarvittavan...

Another Bowie album!

Bowie wrote great songs, shame only one of them was on this album

another shitty Bowie album taking a spot on the list from a more deserving artist, only this time he's transformed himself into a (somehow) worse version of The Rolling Stones nine albums of this

I always avoided this pedo creep, and apparently for good reason. Funny how the title of this record is literally an anagram of "insufferable pretentious crap"

A collection of the worst musical genres, performed in a theatrical and pompous style with songs that are way too long.

Not even second rate glam rock

not a big fan of bowie and this album as comforted me in this opinion some song are kinda cool but most part of the album are too weird and experimental to me

That was the David Bowiest thing I've ever listened to, and that's not exactly a good thing. It was alright. It was FINEEE. Meh.

no me gusto!

Only liked one song.....Jean Genie.

This sounds like the 70s in the worst ways. The piano on the second track made my ears cry.

The piano sound like a five year-old hitting random keys did not enjoy it

Not a fan 2/10

did not like not my vibe

One of Bowie’s worst early career albums. I can’t imagine any reason for its inclusion on this list other than its iconic cover making people overstate the significance of the music itself.

Never been a Bowie fan...still not.

This list has made me realize/remember that I just don't like David Bowie. I get it, he's a super influential artist. I just don't like his music, and that's ok.

A complete miss for me. I tried listening to full songs at first, but then just listened 1st verses and choruses and skipped. I like David Bowie as a person, and I feel that he was genuine, but I just don't get his music. I haven't remembered any of the songs. I feel uncomfortable after listening to it, because I wanted to like it

Very unfamiliar with Bowie beyond the superhits. I enjoyed Time the most, followed by Jean Genie, but the rest felt pretty forgettable. Not really looking forward to 8 more Bowie albums if this is representative. I did not enjoy any of the songs enough to formally "Like".

Gefällt mir nicht, voll 70er

This is the two hundred ninth album I’m rating. After another long break I’ve come back to Bowie. Adding to my Playlist - Watch That Man, Drive-In Saturday, Panic in Detroit, and The Jean Genie. Not Adding to my Playlist - Aladdin Sane (1913-1938-197?), Cracked Actor, Time, The Prettiest Star, Let’s Spend the Night Together, and Lady Grinning Soul. All in all I liked 4/10 songs. Bowie has always been a little overrated.

Bobbins

This is up Amy Tabler's alley.

Not for me. 1/5

I have never liked David Bowie. I did not listen to this album.

the blues-inspired rock opera vibe just really not in line with what i tend to enjoy also the discordant interludes of (seemingly) random notes / chords are not enjoyable Lady Grinning Soul was probably the strongest track on the album for me, but there wasn't a single track i'd go back to listen to

Bowie sucks

No nie porwała mnie wcale.

Hard to have 2 albums of DB and Bjork in close proximity. Too performative. Kinda lame idk

Bowie goes glam ! Never been into glam rock, except maybe some early T-Rex. Hate the saxophone in these mixes...

Where do I stand on David Bowie i hear you ask? Ideally his neck. I really hated this album, and I’m yet to come across anything of his that I actually enjoy. Would rather listen to someone scraping their fingers down a chalkboard through and octogenarians whistling hearing aid than listen to his stuff.

This sparkly faggot does nothing for me

Just listened to the 1st song. I've heard enough

Unimpressed. A collage of songs with no cohesion
