First few songs bang hard as fuck. Good backroound noise for the last ones tbh
what an amazing album by John Lennon songs like ‘Oh my Love’, and ‘How do you sleep?’ Are the highlights for me as well as the obvious one ‘Imagine’.
Big one. Of all the Beatles I think I have the hardest time getting into John's solo stuff. 'Imagine' comes out firing, one of the greatest songs of all time, and may make you forget about the rest of the songs on the album. The does album grow on you for sure, 'Gimme Some Truth' is catchy, 'Crippled Inside' and 'Jealous Guy' round out a strong first 3 songs, and the album flows from there. I really like it's got some country bluegrass feel to some of the songs, some singer songwriter pieces, 'Gimme Some Truth' leading into the piano of 'Oh My Love' really feels good too. 'Oh Yoko!' sends us out and honestly it's a jam. This is as strong an album as can be for John without Paul, George, and Ringo.
Strong 3.5/5 some really good songs and mid songs but overall pleasant.
The title track is a gem I never tire of. The rest is a mixed bag like most of his solo albums. The bluesier numbers are a reach. "Crippled Inside" is either a Paul stylistic diss track (much of the album is) or a belying of the myth that Paul was solely responsible for the cornball side of the Beatles. "Jealous Guy" is the gorgeous disingenuous admissions of a monster. "Oh Yoko!" is the sweetest song Cat Stevens never came up with.
7/10
Little fairy vibe ✨
Imagine - 5/5 Crippled Inside - 4/5 Jealous Guy - 5/5 It's So Hard - 3/5 I Don't Want to Be a Soldier - 2/5 Give Me Some Truth - 4/5 Oh My Love - 3/5 How Do You Sleep? - 5/5 How? - 4/5 Oh Yoko! - 4/5 Average score: 3.9/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Me gustó, sólido
I managed to push past my personal hatred of the single “Imagine” to rather enjoy the album “Imagine”. Big of me I know.
Second best Lennon solo record. Oh yoko and Gimme some true being highlights
John Lennon is the Paul McCartney of freshman-psych level human analysis, being a clueless jagoff lacking self-awareness, and generally being a complete wanker. Phil Spector is a genius who made all that sound terrific, as long as you ignore the attempts at substance.
It was pretty good. A couple of weaker tracks, but generally the tracks were good with a couple of standouts.
🥇crippled inside 🥈oh my love 🥉how do you sleep? HM: jealous guy, gimme some truth, oh yoko
The title song is, while almost overplayed, still a favorite of mine. I never heard the rest of the album before. I had no idea that Jealous Guy was originally a Lennon song, having only heard the Roxy Music version. The rest of the album is mostly decent stuff with some occasional echoes of the Beatles, unsurprisingly.
Nice retro vibe, amazing album, John Lennon is a LEGEND
While there are some great songs here, the record kind of just melts into the background. I know why it's a great album, and I can hear it, but nothing really grabbed me.
Aih saakeli kuin hyvä
Sure
I think this is probably John's best solo album. Highlights: "Imagine", "Jealous Guy" and "Oh Yoko!"
Just imagine if this album didn't exist. What would hipsters listen to?
Love John Lennon
Classic
Great album. Some good rock songs on it but my preference was for the slower songs. Still so much bitterness and a his naive sense of can’t we all just get along” while he lives in a mansion is still there, but I prefer this to his first solo album.
Pretty good, gives Billy Joel vibe
This record serves almost as a synopsis of Lennon's life, beginning and ending in a quite poignant note (with Yoko being slapped on if course)
I’m glad the whole “Lennon good, McCartney bad” narrative has died out.
Very good record. The production sound is unique, it almost has a lofi sound with lots of Spector string layers on top. Pretty cool. I think this album 1000% benefits from being titled and beginning with Imagine. I think the rest of the album after imagine is good but not necessarily great. It’s hard not to compare to McCartney and Harrison solo music of the early 70’s, which I just enjoy more. However still a great listen.
It was good but a lil slow(?) for me I like rock though so vibes
Title track is amazing, and there were some other good ones too, but there wasn’t enough variety here to make me love it as much as some Beatles music.
7/10
Imagine was one of the timeless songs. Imagine the album, not so timeless, but solid throughout.
It's been a while since I played this album. I don't have a lot of Beatles or Lennon in my library, though I've recently listened to some Plastic Ono Band. Overall, in 2025 the album suffers a bit from overexposure of some of the songs, including Imagine (a bit of a naive political statement), and Jealous Guy. Some of the other tracks are a bit more robust.
Good - really enjoyed - quirky mournful songs
Ubiquitous megahit title track aside, this is a great collection of catchy blues influenced rock songs. I really enjoyed this!
I enjoyed this quite a bit more than I expected to, and a lot more than I enjoyed Paul’s solo album that I had a few months back.
Some classics and some other good stuff
Beautiful music
Any album, let alone single song, that has 800M listens (on Spotify) deserves acknowledgement. The title song has done that, and I was thinking that might actually be low. Everyone, across continents, knows "Imagine", the melody and the words. Mix in the often covered "Jealous Guy" (160M, Bryan Ferry's version is great), the equally covered "Gimme Some Truth" (17M, Pearl Jam favorite), plus "Oh My Love" (35M) & "Oh Yoko!" (25M). Even "I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier" (Mad Season cover is cool) & "How Do You Sleep?" (Great song! The Magnificent Bastards cover is solid with Scott Weiland on vocals) get some airplay. Really good songs on this album, it deserves a spot and can say that as this is my first walk through of this entire "Imagine" album. 4 stars, based mostly on the quality of songs, mix of hits, staying power, musical Mt. Rushmore title track and popularity.
Leading with the hit. This has to be one of the most played songs of all time. People love Imagine. I always thought of John Lennon as a pretentious jerk who wrecked the Beatles...I'm reconsidering. I don't love this album, but I like it significantly more than I thought I would. He's a great song writer, there's no denying that. This is definitely better than the Wings album on this list. I love Oh Yoko! It's a great song and it's great in Rushmore.
OK some songs not bad, but def not all around insane John Lennon was just a guy 7.9/10 3.5/5
I’m not sure why but I didn’t think this was going to be as good as it was. The 2 famous hits besides, I didn’t know anything else but had a good time here. Particularly I Don’t Wanna Be a Soldier Mama and Oh Yoko!
I also own this on vynil😭😭. Discovered it in sept 2023 bought in Januar? 2025
Pleasantly surprised by the "non popular" songs
The title track is obviously the highlight but also loved How Do You Sleep
Nice
classic
Bursting with life and creativity
Obviously a great song as the title track. The rest of the album is a bit formulaic and twee for me.
Beyond the title song, the others are beautiful, important, and the Paul diss track! wow.
A classic of course. Album tracks (how do you sleep a special stand out) are actually miles better than the famous two songs on this.
Favs: Crippled Inside, How Do You Sleep?, How?, Oh Yoko
Canciones increíbles que no conocía: Jealous Guy, I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama, Gimme Some Truth, How?
Favs: Imagine, Gimme Some Truth, How Do You Sleep?
A la playlist: Imagine, Crippled Inside, Jealous Guy, Gimme Some Truth, How Do You Sleep?
A great album overall with some fantastic songs but there are poor ones that just take away from the others - stand out songs - oh, yoko, jealous man, crippled inside, How do you sleep at night
The title track is overplayed and inescapable, but the rest of this was really enjoyable
Gorgeous music if you can stomach the preachiness that comes with any Lennon project. I did genuinely enjoy myself going through Imagine multiple times. It’s succinct, focused, heady when the pace demands it, thoughtful and poignant at its most effective. If you’re all in on the mythos that is John Lennon it’s any easy 5. I’m not quite that enthusiastic about the guy, but he could write one heck of a ballad. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Baustelle, Gerstetten, Deutschland. Gutes Album.
Well I didn’t plan to like this
The song to really pay attention to is “Jealous Guy,” written originally in 1968. It is a statement of John Lennon’s deep challenges with relationships and fears of inadequacy. Probably written with Paul (not Yoko) in view. On the other hand, “How Do You Sleep at Night” is a rebuke to Paul and a response to Paul’s song “Too Many People.” (Which is, I think, the better song. But it’s all such a sad breakup / breakdown.) The title track is John at his Johniest, claiming to have found The Answer and to be The Teacher. He didn’t push so hard in this direction until after the Beatles. And then there’s “Gimme Some Truth,” another holdover from the last days of the Beatles… An uneven album filled with psychology, history, and one man trying to find himself anew.
Both John and Paul had early success as solo artists, but the rift in their relationship leaves an indelible mark on their music. Imagine, an excellent solo effort, is more uneven than The Plastic Ono Band, and some of its best tracks are carry overs from the Beatle days. The back and forth attacks between John and Paul seem more like cries for help rather than true artistic differences. Still, John delivers some excellent material. Even "Oh, Yoko" plays better to me (thanks to Wes Anderson for using this track to great effect in Rushmore).
Full of brilliance. But sadly, as a whole, not brilliant. A flawed gem.
Decent enough but more of a Paul man
A great album with a few of the greatest songs ever written.
His second solo album. Rock. We're all complicated beings. We have all compromised our beliefs at times, let ourselves and others down. We are a juxtaposition of right and wrong. Lennon's messges in this album range from beautiful and right on to absurd and hypocritical. This album is a journey through all of that and I like it. The production is great too. Lennon's best work comes with the ego check that are his mates in The Beatles, however this is good.
8/10 Favorite: Jealous Guy
Some seriously good tracks, obviously. Not really my bag, but good.
Good
love it. I prefer John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band but this is still a timeless, fantastic record
Beautiful love song, stopped me in my tracks.
Simply great album.
Dropped a little by the end for me, but it's John Lennon. All his talent is on display here.
Pretty good ig, title track is overrated or underrated depending where you look
It’s almost better to approach this one by disregarding the title track due to its sheer overbearing ubiquity and judge it on the remaining nine. There are at least two other bona fide Lennon classics (Jealous Guy & Gimme Some Truth) and one of the more obvious ‘diss tracks’ aimed at Paul (How Do You Sleep). The rest is pleasant enough, if a little lightweight and lyrically saccharine at times.
Muy bueno
Definitely the best Lennon I've heard so far. Songs are well written and around closer to Beatles than his other solo stuff. Knowing how he is as a person makes me unable to shake the feeling that the energy of this album is very fabricated
I expected a little more for some reason but it’s a good album, politically charged, good lyrics and a variation between the songs by quite a lot actually, not one song sounded the same. The only song I’ve actually heard is obviously the title track so it’s good to hear the complete thing, it feels completely different to the Beatles but that’s to be expected, definitely some John Lennon weirdness as well which helped add to the variety and kept it unique, the instrumentals especially some guitar parts and some of the piano mostly. Favourites: Imagine, Gimme some truth, Paul diss, and Oh Yoko! Overall, 7/10.
Seems like the “cool” thing to do in the music community is to hate on John Lennon, but I’ve never been one to give into that. Sure, he’s the biggest wanker of the four Bugs, but he knows how to make music. When he gets out of his own way, like he largely did with this album (petty diss tracks aside), he’s as great as they come. 4/5 Highlights: Imagine It’s So Hard I Don’t Wanna Be A Soldier Mama How Do You Sleep?
Good, but I never quite grasped the overall vibe to it, so it was weaker than the sum of its parts. Just about held on to a 4.
Mostly a 3 star album but Imagine and Jealous Guy are such classics, think it deserves a 4
It’s a shame imagine is not available on Apple Music, but great album. Didn’t know most other songs
I didn't mean to hurt you, I'm sorry that I made you cry. I'm just a jealous guy). I don't wanna be a Soldier). I Don't wanna be a Soldier siempre me pareció medio aburrida. Y tampoco fui fan de How? En How? Y sería imposible pensar en Jealous Guy, Imagine o How Do You Sleep sin la orquesta. Le pongo 4 estrellitas.
Can I make a confession. Can I say something that’s going to make some people very mad. I don’t like Imagine. The track, I mean. The rest of the album’s fine, or better than. Crippled Inside? Banger. Oh Yoko!? Banger. How Do You Sleep? Jesus Christ but I’d hate to be Paul McCartney listening to that one. Banger, though, for better or worse. Jealous Guy? Jesus Christ but I’d hate to be Paul McCartney listening to that one, for an entirely different reason. Doesn’t it just tear your heart out? (Yes, I am a “Jealous Guy is about Paul” truther. While I’m out here saying things that are going to piss a certain kind of Lennon fanboy off anyway I might as well get that one off my chest too.) Isn’t that piano just the most beautiful thing? …But Imagine? Like yeah I mean personally I don’t think he deserved to die for it but those lyrics from his voice at that point in his life… they do grate. They wouldn’t even be good lyrics coming from anyone else, to be honest. Some “Karl Marx for two year olds” shit we’re all supposed to pretend is profound. And the melody and instrumentation are not interesting. Sorry! It would bother me a lot less if it weren’t for the entire rest of the world deciding that it’s his masterpiece and playing it twelve thousand times. But as it is… I just don’t get it. I say enough! Stop it with that song! So I’m knocking off a star for that. Still, it does earn the other four, though, I think. My feelings about John Lennon at this point in my life are much more complicated than I have time to get into right now (maybe whenever John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band turns up in my queue I'll give that particular topic its due. Or maybe when I get Rubber Soul…) but I can and will say: I do respect him for being brave enough to so often put the ugliest and most vulnerable parts of himself out there into the public eye for us to pass judgement on. Probably he shouldn’t have done all that, to be honest—I don’t think it was any better for him than the primal scream therapy, in terms of actually leaving him in a mental state conducive to leading a healthy and productive life during much of his last decade. But it means I get to listen to Jealous Guy, so for me it's a win.
Another great solo album by a former Beatles member. Imagine is obviously a classic, also have always loved oh yoko. Still below “All things must pass” for my ranking of solo Beatles efforts, but still very good.
An ambitious exploration of Lennon’s vocal range. There are thematic similarities across the board with this album, but they are presented in unique ways throughout the project.
Its John Lennon, how could it not be good? Its John Lennon, how could it not be pretentious?
The last great Lennon album IMHO.
top
I wasn’t that excited to listen to this album since I’m not a big Beatles fan but I actually enjoyed this listen. Favorite song: Imagine, Oh My Love, Oh Yoko!
8/10
A crime that this album is best known for its incredibly cliche title track, honestly.
I really liked it. He sounded dissatisfied. A bit more jaded.
Listened through ~12 times. I really like solo John's mix of pretty Bowie croon and dive bar folk aesthetic. Lots of nice texture across these tracks, but they're all pretty simple songs. Vocally, I've always liked that John seems to experiment with his voice being more of a sound, like just another instrument, than being clearly 'above' the music. I'm a Lennon fan ❤️
Great album, one his best post-Beatles efforts. Imagine, Jealous Guy, Gimme Some Truth, Oh Yoko are big hits. Other notable songs include Crippled Inside, Oh My Love, How.
amazing as imagined, as figured. my only hesitancy for a 5 is that some tracks flow in and out more abruptly than expected. But who am I to judge that really. Imagine almost makes me cry each time
Better than Coldplay
Really good album. Starting off with Imagine is strong
Pretty good honestly. Sounded different enough from Beatles stuff.
Not nearly as good as most of his stuff with he Beatles. It's kind of an awkward mix between him trying to be very sincere and emotional/virtuous/political and hating Paul McCartney. He takes himself way too seriously and seems to have very little interest in experimenting musically, it's mostly just piano ballads and fairly basic rock n roll type stuff. The music is decent but kind of "dry", I'm more interested in it as a concept and history than actually enjoying listening to it, although it's still mostly enjoyable: 3.5 stars
I had never heard this album. I've heard Imagine of course, and Oh Yoko. I really liked Oh My Love as well, a good 4 star album for me that I may come back to
3.5 stars, rounded up to 4.
The closest Lennon came to the level of songwriting he perfected with the Beatles, in my opinion. If this was a Beatles album it would be my least favorite, but it is still better than 99% of what came out of their members after their breakup. Definitely has its moments, and I wish I could hear Imagine with new ears versus what it has become due to overuse and terrible covers in the 50+ years since it came out.
creepy ahh albumcover but banger songs
Classic
geni
Enjoyable, wouldn’t revisit but had some great emotional songs.
Top track: Imagine
The title track alone makes this almost five stars. The other tracks don't quite keep up. 54 years later, we're still imagining all of the same apparently unachievable things 😢
Off the cuff remark: at times this album does feel quite sublime, even Imagine still sounds gorgeous. Though it isn't perfect. Standout track: ignoring the title track as that's too easy I really like the opener, How? Revisit?: I astounded myself in the feeling when I listened that I don't think I have ever listened to the whole album before though familiar with most of the songs. I will be listening again.
Against my own will, I really liked this album. I try to separate the artist from their (messy) lives, but Lennon's history of abuse, child neglect, and conceit played in the background as I listened. But that was reflected in the listen and I have to admit that he tells his truth through the music, which was refreshing.
If only for Imagine, this album deserves a lot of stars. A song, which still manages to capture the mind of young people. But the album also contains further "nice" songs. Definitely worth listening to.
i sleep in a big bed with my wife
I'm more of a Paul guy
Highlight Song/s: Imagine, Crippled Inside, Gimme Some Truth and How Do You Sleep? My 100th album from the generator! The album is quite melancholic and is sombre on most of the songs. This is album is great lyrically, nothing too bad is on here. This one starts with the title track, which has lyrics that aren't asking for anything too much. For example It simply asks you to imagine a world free of religion, which some psycho decided that it was too much to ask for and decided to commit murder because of that song.
Its jhon lennon. Just listen. I would listen to it again 8/10
Pretty good - 4.1
One point penalty because of Yoko
Imagine is the least interesting thing happening here
banger first songs, rest kinda ok, good songwriting.
I have found the reverence for solo John Lennon somewhat perplexing. His three solo records prior to the breakup of the Beatles are universally unlistenable. "Plastic Ono Band", because of its raw confessionalism, overrates what is a fairly weak set of songs. And then there is this record, where Lennon's self-importance and insecurity wrestle with each other. I generally preferred Lennon's Beatles material to McCartney's, but as solo artists I have the opposite opinion. All that said, this is probably front-to-back the strongest and most consistent of Lennon's solo output, with strong rockers ("Gimme Some Truth") and ballads ("Jealous Guy"). Things mostly went downhill from here, so this is Lennon at his solo peak.
1001 Albums has been handing me a lot of great albums lately. I guess I shouldn't be surprised at the reception of the album. I can't wait for the people who call John a domestic abuser for hiting Cynthia once to learn about Ringo Starr and Elvis Presley. If John deserved to die, may Elvis burn in the deepest, most excruciating pits of hell /s The music itself is fantastic. I mean, c'mon, it's John Lennon. He wrote most of The Beatles's greatest hits. "Imagine" is one of the most influential songs of all-time, "Jealous Guy" is an honest but incredibly depressing song, and the twinkling piano infinitesimally improves the record. I also find it funny that people claim John's an antichrist for writing "Imagine there's no heaven," when all his songs are focused on promoting peace and unity by imagining a world without religious divisions.
Just some classics. Typically you can’t go wrong with a beatle
"The only thing you done was yesterday / And since you've gone you're just another day", lance-t-il, tandis que George Harrison lui-même livre un solo de guitare slide venimeux.
It is not my favorite album, but it is listenable. I would listen to it when trying to relax.
This album is pretty good overall, some nice songs. Love John’s voice too. Fav tracks - Imagine - Crippled inside - I Don’t Wanna Be A Soldier Mama - Oh My Love - How Do You Sleep? - Oh Yoko!
Standout Songs: Imagine Crippled Inside It's So Hard Gimme Some Truth Oh My Love Oh Yoko!
Great album, really enjoyed this
Phenomenal post-Beatles music!
4.2
One of the greatest songs ever written for the opener and a continuously good album throughout. Maybe trails off a little bit in the last half but I love Oh Yoko as the finisher
Really good stuff
I mean he is a pretty good songwriter.
Great album with one of the best songs of all time on it
Overall, this album to me is actually good. But in general, how I feel about the Beatles after they broke up and went their own separate ways was that they just went from amazing to okay due to the chemistry not being there for them. This was more apparent with John Lennon though. I feel that other than Imagine and a few other songs, the album can get a little repetitive and bland at times. However, the album's lyricism is pretty great but that is to be expected considering it is John Lennon. Other than Imagine, I really liked the song How Do You Sleep? Even though it is a diss track toward Paul McCartney but it's just a great song in terms of composition and even having a Beatle cameo in the form of George Harrison providing slide guitar. But other than that, this album is just pretty good. I think it has its hits and some filler songs that nobody really ever talks about. But I don't think its too overrated to the point where it doesn't deserve it's praise, I totally see where people come from where they think that this is one of Lennon's greatest solo albums. But honestly, I don't think it is so amazing that it clears anything the Beatles ever made. Favorite Tracks: Imagine, Jealous Guy, Oh My Love, How Do You Sleep?, Oh Yoko! Rating: 4/5
Loved this. Imagine is the most popular song on this album, and it's the safest, most boring song on it as well. Really enjoyed the use of horns.
John Lennon proves he's the melody-maker on this album. He definitely had a chip on his shoulder with this one With songs like Gimme Some Truth and How Do You Sleep? Yoko made him woke-o.
Half these songs were on the definitive John Lennon collection I had on repeat back in college. I personally enjoyed this album as a whole but it’s not something I would really go out of my way to recommend that you have to hear before you die. If anything, you should hear Corey Feldman’s version of “Imagine” before you die. Overall, I still really dug this.
slightly bummed out to have to admit I actually enjoyed this one quite a bit
The greatness of Lennon's songs is inversely proportional to how much of a prick he is in them.
classic!~
Great album.
The Beatles are my favourite band, but I've never listened to any of their solo albums all the way through, mostly because the bromance breakup between John and Paul depresses me, but also because I didn't think any of their solo work could ever live up to what they made as a group. I actually really enjoyed this, and now I'm looking forward to hearing the other solo ex-Beatle albums on the list.
Although he's John Lennon he does know how to make good music
Goodstuff
I love the Beatles, but it's almost like the more I hear about Lennon, the less I like him. I am a Paul guy--the hard driving coach, whereas John was the deadbeat dad slacker. OK, done with the virtue signaling. But while "Imagine" has dipped a bit as a song for me--so schmaltzy--this album is still really good. "Jealous Guy" is fukken tremendous (and spawned an incredible Donny Hathaway cover). Top tracks: "Imagine" (even after bashing it), "Jealous Guy," "Oh Yoko"--fuck you Kopech, "Oh Yoko" rips.
It’s hard to rate an album that contains such an iconic song. It’s hard to imagine a world without “Imagine”, but you can do it if you try. But like so many one hit wonder bands, we ignore the wider scope of their music for one smash. I like the varied tone of Lennon’s solo work, at times playful, scathing, and hopeful.
Strange to say but I hadn't heard this all the way through before. Excellent album but I put "All Things Must Pass" and the first "McCartney" above it. Love "Gimme Some Truth," "How Do You Sleep," and, of course, the title track. Sad to say that song has never been truer now.
-2 points for imagine, +1 for george harrison
ohhhhh yoookoooooo
Very 60s, verging on hippy, but decent listen.
Nice mix of songs
Len Houmous tried to get John to join us on tour. I remember him shouting ‘imagine, John. Imagine Houmous, Chutney & Lennon. He just flicked the bird at him and walked off. They never got on. We both always preferred the first Paul McCartney. The Beatles went down hill after his car crash. 3.7 6/10 Gimme Some Truth
I like this a lot, probably a 4.5 for me
Sweet beginning and end with some classic Lennon commentary in between.
How does a record sound so ahead of its time whilst simultaneously being such an authentic nod to greatness that has been before? An all time classic!
This album sounds amazing! I love the songs at the beginning and end of the album. The only thing holding it back are the 2 stage like songs in the middle of the album.
John, you're dreamer.
100% not my style, but I can't deny that Lennon's work sounds really good. Great voice, cool arrangements, he is a proper songwriter. I'm not going to listen to this album ever again probably, but it's really enjoyable.
classy
Lennon's strongest solo outing, still a step down from much of the Beatles work.
Very good, Oh Yoko is a masterpiece
Mítica imagine. Oh Yoko => inspiració de Manel a "Si, Yoko". Me recorda als Beatles, però no excessivament.
<3 Faves: "Imagine", of course, en "How Do You Sleep?"
Beatles solo albums really reinforce and define the roles that they played in the Beatles, true or not. Paul was the master pop tunesmith, Ringo was the lighthearted silly one, George was the quiet contemplative one with virtuosic ability, and John was the artistic visionary. This was more accessible than other Lennon solo material thanks to some well known song, including easily the most well known title track. But the deep tracks still feel a little unfocused and artsy for the sake of being artsy. Everyone should hear the title track if they haven’t. There’s a few other songs that are worth hearing. If you’re going to pick a Lennon solo album to listen to this is probably the right choice. Plastic Ono is “technically better” arguably, but this is the most representative.
Ok FINE… I actually really enjoyed this. I hate that he made something I like.
It's definitely one of the albums that exists
Because I am a Get Back (Naked Version) I gotta admit that I dont’t like Phil Spector for couple of reasons. However, Imagine is one of the better albums created by John at his solo career. There are a number of iconic tracks such as Imagine, Jealous Guy, Gimme Some Truth and How Do You Sleep? (Yes the McCartney diss track :p) I recognize that the lyricism in this time cannot really hide Lennon’s problematic side, but I still prefer not to rank the album solely thinking about Lennon’s problematic personal life issues. If I would compare RAM by McCartney and Imagine by John Lennon, I think I would prefer giving RAM full points instead of Imagine since it is by far the better album from that era of post-Beatles. I quite often listen to RAM as a whole album but I usually listen to songs from Imagine separately. RAM gives more of an great album experience than Imagine imo. (I hope RAM will come up later down the line in the project :)) Therefore 4 it is. I am really closer to 3 too, but the first time I re-listened the album for the project I actually enjoyed it a lot since it has been a while. So for the all memories I had in the past of the album and my crazy Beatles fan are I have to give it a 4 :) P.S: I think I have to admit Imagine as a song is a little too overrated and has some questionable parts.
Mostly for Imagine.
Good
Very bluesy a great record not as good a Ram but it's still great
Went in with a bit of a hesitation, since I find Imagine to be a bit of an overrated and hypocritical song, but this was a really pleasant listen. Some unexpected production but in a nice way.
Surprisingly good, only a couple of weak fillers.
Oh John! Poor John. Forty-give years gone, now. John was always my favorite Beatle. In high school I read a massive biography my dad had lying around. I'm not sure exactly which one it was, but I think there's a good chance it was the highly controversial Albert Goldman biography. Despite portraying John unflatteringly, it did little to diminish my feelings for him and only made me sense the human complexity behind the Rock God figure, as sensationalized as the book may have been. Anyone who watched A hard Day's night could tell you that John was a bit of a sarcastic asshole, but he was also funny and lovable, and I could sense the warmth there that he tried to hide away and protect, the hurt little boy inside. I feel like that duality is very present on this album. Some of the themes are more worldly and some are more interpersonal, but there's an undercurrent of both expressing cynicism and moving towards peace, justice, and healing. An easy example is in my favorite track here, "Jealous Guy." I find the melody of this song so haunting and stirring, but it's basically an anthem for avoidant attachment styles. it's clear he was trying to grapple with his own fucked up tendencies and work through it. I wish he had been able to have more time to grow and create.
What a wonderful kind of music.
I enjoyed this album very much!
Great with the Beatles, just good as a solo artist. Some good music. Died way to young, along with the others that left us to early.
Listened twice. It is good! Many effects, yet tasteful.
Music from the 60'ies is usually a pretty uphill battle with me. I just find most of it plain boring. This one stands out a bit more, 'Imagine' being an all time top hit and I found the diss track aspect of 'How Do You Sleep?' a bit intriguing. There's probably more depth in the other tracks too, but they didn't leave much of an impression on me Standouts Imagine How Do You Sleep? 4/5
I’m more of a Paul-person than a John-person, and if you put the cheese-factor aside for the title track, this is actually a very pleasant album. His political lyrics and messaging are masked by lovely tunes and vocals.
Pretty cool stuff from John.
Some iconic songs push this album up. There were some songs not so great but I liked it in full. The Yoko song was something I would write.
This was cool. Obviously imagine is the big song but the rest was decent. I understand the criticism that the Beatles together sound better and I agree but I think this holds on its own.
I really enjoyed this. Myriad of different styles and textures in one album.
A complicated man, a classic album.
Oh I didn’t want to like Imagine. I’m not a fan of John Lennon’s character, but I will put that aside for this review. But mentioning this is important to show my honesty. Lennon created some beautiful and engaging music. Every song is different, with witty lyrics or raw emotion. I couldn’t wait to see what the next song brought. He championed social causes, or bit back at a former bandmate, or declared his love, or was snarky toward political figures. Imagine is a fascinating listen for the snark alone. But the way he played with genres to include a little jazz or country? I wasn’t expecting the use of horns or a harmonica, but Lennon made it work.
A favourite of my youth. I used to love it, these days, I can spot its weaknesses, namely the incredible naivity of Imagine or Soldier.
Kind of dubby in places, really liked it. Love the drum sound.
Yeah yeah yeah, John Lennon is an arsehole and not a nice human being. I don't give a shit. This is a very good album. 'Imagine' may be overplayed, but it's such a good way to open the record. It's a fantastic song, as are the other ballads 'Jealous Guy' (which is a song my dad used to play when I was young and I hated) and 'Oh My Love'. They're all done with piano accompaniments rather than guitars resulting in the album having a soft touch. The guitars are saved for the rockers like bluesy tune 'It's So Hard' and the political 'Gimme Some Truth'. I wasn't a huge fan of the jaunty country tinged 'Crippled Inside' and 'I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama' went on for a bit too long. But the rest of the tracks range from solid to very good. Better than some of the offerings from The Beatles, but not quite the best of the best. Most difficult three or four decision so far and I've landed on a four.
C'était TRÈS cool.
a lot of these songs work for me, the highs on this album are a lot higher than the lows, the lows. are i don’t wanna be a solider, mama
Hyperbole finds in “Imagine” a true nemesis. It’s is a song that’s so elemental that it’s difficult to believe it hasn’t always existed (like Auld Lang Syne or Jack and Jill); a song so earnest, direct and vulnerable that hearing it always feels like your own discovery; a song so beloved that even an attack from a cadre of global actors armed with iPhones and fronted by an actual IDF soldier couldn’t sink it. A beautiful song. It’s a shame that it might now best represent a facile gesture concealing an absence of tangible care (or, perhaps, as preface to Fukuyama’s ‘end of history’). But that’s on us, really, not John. Back to the album, though, and unsurprisingly, perhaps unavoidably, we’re quickly heading downhill. The bluegrass of “Crippled Inside” is annoying in its bit too clever juxtaposition of musical tweeness with lyrical anxiousness. “Jealous Guy” gets us back on track – a song Alex Turner would have loved to write, perhaps has been trying to for the past decade – and “It’s so hard” does a job, but it’s really at “I don’t wanna be a soldier mamma” that my interest is again piqued. It feels like the blueprint for Madchester, for Primal Scream – a band named for Arthur Janov’s therapeutic remedy, which, pleasingly, Lennon was undergoing around the time of writing – for the Bad Seeds … . It’s joyful, urgent, and deadly cool. “Gimme Some Truth” begins the record’s second side, offering a Weltschmerz-textured reimagining of “Imagine” that feels straight out of the local newspaper’s letters section. I don’t disagree with him. By the time the thunderously trenchant “How do you sleep?” rolls in, we’re really cooking. A diss track for the ages, it’s mean-spirited – but undeniably funky, and likely funny enough to be quickly forgiven (especially if its target technically started it…). It’s a shame, then, that it’s with the dampest of the album’s squibs that John follows “How do you sleep?”. “How?” – a quarter of the song of its predecessor in so many ways – is a forgettable ramble through a collection of ersatz philosophical aphorisms; not for the first time on this record, it feels a bit too clever. Album closer, “Oh Yoko!” is, for an album that started with “Imagine”, an appropriately disarming number. On the surface a saccharine pop song, there eddies beneath that sheet of melodic icing sugar a steely sort of poignancy. For a moment, caught in the whimsy, it might feel like all lovers answer to “Oh Yoko!”. I leave the album that bit better informed as to why John Lennon occupies the space he does in 20th century music. He’s one best songwriters to have ever done it. No hyperbole required.

Starts with one of the greatest songs ever written and it doesn't decline much from there.
This is definitely a great album with some timeless classic tracks like “Jealous Guy” and “Oh My Love.” I personally love how piano-driven the album is, and the orchestral arrangements throughout really add a lot of color to the music.
Liked far more than expected. Imagine is a good song but impossible to hear with fresh ears so hard to judge. However, I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier Mama and How Do You Sleep? were great. A few more decent tracks thrown in as well as a couple of duds (Crippled Inside), make this a solid album and probably the best of the Beatles-related ones I've had so far.
imagne
John was a deeply flawed man, but a great songwriter, and I love the sincerity and honesty in his music. I think Imagine has become too familiar and is easily written off as trite, but I personally can't ever hear it without tearing up. It's a vision for a better world that could be if everyone cared.
Yeah I liked this.
4/25/25. First time listening to thiss album in full, very enjoyable. A couple songs I've heard in passing or were covered by other artists that I had no idea were Lennon songs. Very influential!
Listened before but it hit the hardest this time. Always like the bigger hits but the in betweeners filled out the album very nicely
You may say I’m a dreamer but I’m not. You can see what Lennon did for the Beatles in this album while also seeing where the others could’ve stepped in to brush up some of the edges
Pretty good stuff!
I hadn't heard any of music outside Imagine. This album felt a lot like Beatles music that was missing something. It was enjoyable and calming. It felt thoughtful and helped me focus.
Besides that yoko song, it’s a great album. Enjoyed the mix of styles, liked the psychedelic blend that reminded me abit of sgt. peppers. 4.5
Mark David Chapman should have assassinated Ronald Reagan instead of him. 💔
At times, brilliant, but still not Beatles worthy. Interesting to listen to how Lennon every. The sound is sort of schizophrenic and can’t seem to maintain a direction.
My only Lennon album (apart from several Beatles albums) is Shaved Fish with the Plastic Ono Band. I loved it. This is better. Has a definite mood and the tracks seem to lead into each other. It tells a story although the story arc is not clear and will take me many listens to work out. Exactly what you look for when buying a vinyl. It’s now definitely on my list.
oh to be loved like yoko. he was such a beautiful soul 4.5/5
A brilliant album of course. Introspective, vulnerable lyrics and fantastic musicianship. Not quite consistent enough across the board to earn a perfect rating but it’s pretty damn close.
At one time in my life this album was probably in my top 10. At this point, it is not nearly as high, but it is still a good album. I will still listen to it but I have to be in the mood for it sometimes.
Imagine... and a bunch of other songs.
Some familiar songs. So interesting to think of this as his first step away from the Beatles. Some English folk song influences
Great album
Pretty cool, it was a lot better than i expected it to be! :)
Lead-off hit single is a piece around which civilizations have been built. Great little piece of socialistic poetry delivered well over the simple piano led instrumentation. For some reason hearing this song always makes me a bit sad realizing that for all the beauty described there is no way it will ever be realized. Crippled Inside is an interesting drop into plonky Americana. I'm into it. I really enjoy I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier Mama. Something in the mix and the messiness of it all feels so inviting. Gimme Some Truth reminds me oddly of sections of Schools Out by Alice Cooper. I enjoy the song of its own accord. Loving How Do You Sleep? from the first note. Unexpectedly soulful swing to this late album jam. Oh Yoko! is an unexpectedly bright outro to this album that was otherwise quite sober. Oddly this reminds me of The White Stripes. Found this to be a fine listen that does a lot inside of its <40 minute playtime. Really enjoyed I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier Mama, Crippled Inside, and How Do You Sleep? The rest was fine but sort of forgettable (outside of Imagine). For me this is low 4 territory
Imagine, Jealous Guy, and How Do You Sleep are classics imo, With How Do You Sleep being a crazy diss track on Paul. The rest do enough to bump this to a 4. Always thought Oh Yoko was a bit corny. We get it John you like this Yoko chick.
Great album
This one was a solid starter, obviously I'm pretty familiar with the title track having played it on piano. I was surprised at Jealous Guy as I honestly thought that was a Donny Hathaway song, he may have done it better though. Drums and piano (rhodes on one of the latter tracks) were another standout to me. Some of the songs are pretty silly lyrics wise and/or go on for too long, but that seems like a common theme with this dude over the years. Overall a solid listen, 8/10.
Jim Lemon's album Imagine was a really good listen, and the vocals were timeless
His best overall album, IMO
I own this album on vinyl. I bought it because it was iconic. I haven’t listened to it much. This album is way ahead of its time and even includes a brutal diss track.
I like it. Not as much as I like the Beatles, but I like it. 3.5 stars, but I’ll round up.
Funny how consensus changes over time, isn't it? When I was growing up (in the 90s/00s in the UK, to be clear), the song Imagine was untouchable. People would talk about it with awe. I remember sitting for hours watching some "best song" countdown on one of the music channels and this came out at number one (though, to be fair, I don't recall the parameters. Best song that is also the motto of an airport?) But now - well, to paraphrase Lennon himself, 'Imagine' isn't even the best song on Imagine. The "new" consensus is that it's trite, basically. Overplayed and overegged. The simplistic lyrics, the faux-naivete of it all, the inherent hypocrisy in a rich man singing "Imagine no possessions" and a man with his own well-documented issues with violence singing for peace. The last straw was that godawful Gal Gadot video. I gotta tell you, though, I quite enjoyed hearing it again. Is it Lennon's best? No. My favourite song on here is probably 'Crippled Inside', which is much more interesting, lyrically (although I have to say the whole album is on the simple, 'imagine a better world', side of things). I think had he lived he'd have gone on to surpass this album by far. But it's still an enjoyable listen to one of the most talented songwriters we've ever had.
Oh Yoko!!
I had a talk with my boyfriend this weekend about the beatles and how left people argue that they are (john lennon is) right, because nowadays those stances wouldn't be what we consider "left". I love having discussions with my boyfriend and we came to the conclusion, that you should take the view of the time into consideration. this is just such a left album almost marxistic and this kinda made it better for me because honestly I CANNOT stand john lennon. here you go 4stars
I confess that I'm a bit sick of Imagine, but that's not the song's fault. On the other hand, I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier, Mama and How Do You Sleep are down and dirty jams.
Lots of classic songs in here. I can see the fervor he has for political music, and it’s a lot of good stuff. You can’t really beat the magic of imagine, and I can believe he was the guy who wrote jealous guy!
Banger
Never listened to John's solo stuff. Imagine is a great song, I don't think it can be oversold. Jealous Guy, I don't want to be a soldier mama, How do you sleep, and Oh Yoko are all great songs also. I think the album goes well and Lennon is still at the top of his game. I was between a 4 and 5 for this one but I did feel that it was missing something without the rest of the beatles.
86/100. John Lennon's Imagine is a standout pop-rock/singer-songwriter record. The album is filled with memorable tunes and thought-provoking lyrics that will be remembered for years to come. The title track, "Imagine," is arguably one of his most iconic creations, speaking volumes about his artistic legacy. While there are a few tracks on the project that resonated less with me, the overall experience remains great and enduring.
The title track is obviously a behemoth and probably the only reason this album scratches this list. The rest of it is not bad per se, but it's kind of middle of the road. I wouldn't call it essential by any means, but it's great in the context of understanding who the whole picture of who The Beatles were as a group of four individuals. I love it, but don't think it's necessarily great, the Phil Spector production is (always) a bit much for me. At the end of the day it's kind of difficult to rank this objectively, and as a teenager I would have said this was a 5 stars, but it's clearly not.
In this album, it's pretty much Imagine and Jealous Guy that are really good, whereas the rest are alright, it's just that they're not on THAT level. Pretty nice album to have in the background and even properly focus on it.
Much better than anything by The Beatles. I also really appreciated that it was only 40 minutes long....it's been a week already.
An very good album, showing all sides of John Lennon. almost on my all time list. 4.5/5
Fantastic lyrics Beautiful soul
I’m not sure what I would rate this without imagine, but it’s really nice to hear some John Lennon for the first time.
better than a lot of the beatles stuff but still kinda whiny. title track is obvi a classic
A classic of John's post-Beatles catalog. He was at one of his peaks here. Amazing song crafting and production
It's pretty good! I don't get the edgy hate for John Lennon. I would probably have rated this 3 stars, but now I'll rate it 4 just to spite the haters.
We can’t ignore the fact this opens with one of the most iconic songs of all time. Leading into Crippled Inside is great - addressing mental health with the humour many of us do. Love the prison blues vibe of It’s So Hard. The combination of politics and mental health is so relevant to how we are constantly having challenges around news consumption today. Oh My Love could seem like a harsh contrast but it feels like we need a breather after the last couple of tracks so it works. Favourite song: Imagine
Unlike McCartney, at least Lennon had something to say and didn't just sing about his chickens or whatever. "Imagine" is great (I'm hearing it again in the Starbucks I'm sitting in right now), it drags a bit in the bluesy stuff, but really comes back together for a triumphant finale, with "How Do You Sleep" blowing the roof off the whole thing.
Whatever dude
Haven’t added any songs yet but I definitely like this album
Favorite Track: Imagine
Objectively this is probably the best post-Beatles album any of them came out with, but man does the sanctimony and derision rub me the wrong way on so many of these songs.
I go back and forth on this album, but I can't deny it is very good. Verges on being a bit narcissistic at times, but on the whole manages to tread that line better than Plastic Ono Band. Highlights are gimme some truth, oh my love and how. 7/10
4.5
This is great but your always going to compare it to the beatles and it doesnt understandably live up so cant give it five stars but its great
omg jlen is a twangy boy who knew
Bookended by two longtime favorites, the classic Imagine and plaintive Oh Yoko! My upbringing in a resolutely pro-Lennon (if Beatles-indifferent) household secures the 4.
Pleasantly melodic. Better morning than night music.
✌🏻
Imagine, oh my love. Thanks, John.
Imagine is so incredible it's impossible to follow, and it's hard to review the album as a whole. Oh My Love is in some ways just as beautiful. There are other high points but lots of the tracks are just ok. None of that matters though. Imagine is a song like no other, it's impact is never diminished, it's the opposite of every hymn and national anthem. Maybe he was a dreamer but he certainly wasn't and isn't the only one x
Probably the closest to a 5 that I haven’t given a 5. This album is filled with incredible tracks (Imagine, Crippled Inside, Jealous Guy, Oh My Love, How?, etc.). It really is one of the best post-Beatles albums and does feel distinctly different from their work. Somehow I feel like the recording quality, especially on the vocals, suffers at times. This breaks the experience for me. Love John though. :)
Good album but if I was to rank post-Beatle albums it would be below All Things Must Pass and Band On The Run. Still very good - Jealous Guy is heavenly, one of my favourite songs ever.
Surprisingly personal and of course very sophisticated song writing, as expected from a master like Lennon. Obviously the title track is legendary but I also loved Oh My Love. Favorites: Imagine, Jealous Guy, Oh My Love, How Do You Sleep Least Favorites: Crippled Inside
Imagine Jealous Guy Gimme Some Truth How Do You Sleep? Oh Yoko!
This is probably one of the stronger solo records from a member of the Beatles. That said, I don't think it's consistently brilliant.
oof -1 for I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama but +1 for Gimme Some Truth!! and anotha +1 for How Do You Sleep? me likey
Good album. Has some great songs and great producing!
It’s by no means a bad album but John definitely peaked in The Beatles (like they all did)
Great piece of work
The Zenith of Lennon's post-Beatle career. 'How Do You Sleep?' features some of John's poetically bitter lyrics and superb guitar work from George. 'Imagine' and 'Jealous Guy' are undeniably classic songs. The lesser known album tracks are also fun in their own right. Best Tracks: - How Do You Sleep? - Gimme Some Truth - Jealous Guy - Imagine Worst Tracks: N/A Rating: 9/10
It's a Beatle
pretty good
A very inconsistent album but still Lennon's second best. Oh Yoko! is strangely touching.
A complicated album. Just from the comments on here 50 years on it and he still manages to be a hot topic still, with very little subjectivity it seems. I have limited objectivity, I know all the Beatles related stuff very well. Yes that he was a complicated asshole, and has been overanalysed fact and fiction, which comes through in the autobiographical music, and he probably out of them all the Beatles, I personally feel needed the others to round the music out. So being My least favourite out of the Beatles solo, ringo being well ringo 4 Stars, musically the highs are up there, but the self indulgence (?) can make it feel like it lags on occasion.
I'm not invested enough in The Beatles to be team John or Team Paul and I haven't done a dive into John apparently being a cunt, so from purely as musical review - this album is fantastic. Easy to put on replay and each song stands out in its own way.
I like it. Not as much as I like the Beatles, but I like it. 3.5 stars, but I’ll round up.
Great album! Easy to enjoy
Imogen needs less bossa nova.
Fantastic classic album. Jealous Guy is a standout for me, next to of course the title track. I think it's actually probably the best solo album of the Beatles.
Goed album. 3.5
fantastic
Jealous Guy & How do you sleep? are nice surprises in a average good album
Not really alike the beatles. lyrics and theming are on point, and quite varied in a good way. Songs can feel a bit slow. Not too sure whether I like the title track. favorite songs: Jealous guy, gimmie some truth, oh my love, oh yoko! Overall around 7/10
Good variety of sounds and pleasant listening experience
Love this album!! Not fantastic all the way thru, but still pretty good
4.5/5. Can’t believe Forrest Gump got to meet this dude.
Recht gut
So, where to begin, with the opening of Imagine, a timeless classic, then opening into an album filled with blues notes, inspiration of classic soft rock, and innovative sounds. John Lennon’s LSD infused musical writing makes this album Unique and timeless, with some of the most mystical lyrics I have heard. Overall a solid 8.5/10, some songs were too repetitive in my opinion, whilst also being too 60/70s of the hippie, Age of Enlightenment which haven’t travelled well through music now. However, one can appreciate that this album is one of the greatest of all time, whilst also being one of the greatest solo break out album
