Reviews (page 5 of 13)

Overall a good album but it has its highs and lows. The best tracks are very high and make up for the lacklustre tracks. Imagine, jealous guy, and one more I forgor are by far the best written songs on the album. Unfortunately it is too inconsistent to consider giving a 5/5 and I even considered giving a 3/5.

Dug it, imagine is still a great song even though it's completely overplayed.

I've got a theory that "imagine" is ironic. He asks "why can't we all be nice? no war, no fighting, not that hard guys!" and then every other song answers his own question, seemingly without him realizing. 'just a jealous guy', 'how do you sleep', ' i frickin hate hypocrites'... its a budding theory, i haven't ironed out the kinks. Maybe I just think it would be funny if the universal "give peace a chance" anthem were written as a joke, and he never got the chance to lift the veil. Maybe that's nihilistic Great album, 4/5

It is what it is. Love the album, maybe not the artist. Something about that delay soaked sound makes me feel real warm inside. If you throw this one more than like, 1-2x a year you’re a dork

He will always be a favorite. He will always have songs that don’t quite his a cord, but those like Imagine will live with me always.

Da grande fan dei Beatles ho apprezzato anche questo, anche se è meno spensierato come suono

I liked a good bit of this. Interesting lyrics.

Beetle

imagine not getting shot!

The solo debut with the man's signature track, but like the rest of the Beatle's solo work, it's clear that the Beatles were far greater than the sum of their parts. Without the creative friction to reign in the excesses of the other members, this solo work is good. I don't think it's great. And even the standout tracks on this album (Gimme Some Truth, How Do You Sleep) are elevated by the inclusion of (former?) bandmate Harrison's guitar work. How *solo* is this solo work, anyway? I wonder if this is more John meeting expectations of who he was supposed to be? It seems that John wanted to be less of a musician and more of an "artist" by this time in his life. I don't blame him: burnout is difficult to cope with. 3 plus one star for a timeless classic.

The title song is forever tainted by that cringe celebrity video during COVID lockdowns

Not a bad start to the year. Had listened and liked before but not owned. Might purchase if the right price! Jealous guy resonates.

I really enjoyed listening to this album, although it isn't my usual go to music. I heard some happy and sad tunes and I really liked that. I think my favorite song is Imagine or Jealous man!!

Surprised by the subset of reviewers that hate this album. I guess I've never really cared to dive too much into how much of a jerk John Lennon appeared to be so I'm not as biased against the album off the bat. Focusing on the music alone, I love this album. It's best solo Beatles album out there.

Starting off strong with the iconic single of the album of the same name by Lennon, “Imagine,” the rest of the album follows suit. Beautifully produced (I had no idea Phil Spector played a role here which makes me love this album all the more) and showcases Lennon’s standalone talent from the Beatles. Some standout tracks: “Crippled Inside,” the bluesy “I Don’t Wanna Be A Soldier Mama,” “Oh My Love.”

Favorite track: Imagine other picks: how do you sleep?, Jealous guy

A great album for a chill Sunday afternoon.

Can’t separate my nostalgia from my views. A genius testing all the levers on his own for the first time.

love this album. the back half in particular is great.

he may have been an awful person but by jove, jhon lennon was one of the greatest musicians ever

Somehow never heard most of this album. Highlights aren't as good as Plastic Ono Band, strings tend to weaken it where they appear. If this wasn't a John Lennon album, and I hadn't heard Imagine used in tacky ways a thousand times, and it came up on the list I'd be like "WOW, what is this??? five stars!!!" four stars.

It’s really something to be John Lennon and open an album with the dumbest empty-headed hippie anthem ever written… and then follow it up with basically an entire album about the darkness within. This thing rocks. Great Lennon sound, pretty wacky at times. Much better than I remember it.

As I’ve said multiple times on here, sont songs are so iconic they become so overplayed that we stop paying attention to them. Imagine is one of the most iconic, most important and most overplayed songs of all time. It and the rest of the album are such a v clear, albeit naive vision of what could be. It’s filled with beautifully hypnotic songs. But something is missing and we all know who they are. 8.3/10

I know John hates John Lennon but it seems to be a little easier for me to separate the art from the artist. Helps when Yoko isn't involved.

I'm not a John guy. I find him pretentious and arrogant. But I just can't deny that this is good music.

Phil Spector's production abilities curdled in the 70s in an interesting way to me. Like Leonard Cohen's Death of a Ladies Man everything sounds woozy rather than the dreaminess of his 60s heyday. But I like it. Lyrically the song Imagine is the ultimate in hippiness which it isn't difficult to be cynical about. But it is good to be the ultimate in something and it is pretty if overplayed. I prefer the blasted sad and apparent self pity of the original of Jealous Guy over the more than a little preening of Bryan Ferry's version. How Do You Sleep? is mean but it is also pretty funny and fun in a school playground gossipy way to consider alongside Macca's Too Many People. Also don't think for a moment Lennon wasn't aware of how it contrasts with the title track.

EL OH EL how do you fucking SLEEP? oh my love <3

It's hard to put a realistic number on this album when you heard the Beatles. It's such a greate piece compared to some of the entries (unhonourable mention for the Libertines) but it's still far weaker than albums of the band. All I can do is give 4 and blame Yoko Ono like we all do.

blijft een goed album.. helaas zijn de teksten terug brandend actueel...

4.1 How? was a standout. Imagine doesnt need any critique from a guy like me

God I hate the title track. Trite nonsense. And watching the wheels used the same harmonic ideas much better 9 years later. Yes Lennon’s a genius, living in every pore, as Freddie Mercury sang, and the rest of this album bares this out. ‘How do you sleep?’ Shouldn’t work - it’s nasty, it’s mean and it’s a bit unwarranted. George apparently broke down in tears recording it. But it’s extremely clever ‘those freaks were right when they said you were dead’; ‘all you did was yesterday/ now you’re just another day’. Ouch but good lyrics man. Paul responded in ‘Silly Love Songs’. The refrain ‘I love you’ probably smacks John harder than Paul smacked John. Jealous Guy is a vast improvement on Child of Nature. Lennon had the gift of being to write songs that in nearly everyone else’s hands would be self indulgent tripe. Somehow he manages not to do this. When he follows his muse for general experience it can be guff. When he’s personal it can be transcendent. He lived on a different plane. Crack band. The ever reliable Klaus Voorman, Jim Keltner, Nicky Hopkins. George plays a scorcher solo on How do you Sleep. George invents pop slide guitar. He wasn’t the first to play slide on record - not even in England. Brian Jones, Eric Clapton and Peter Green all had. But they’d all done it in a strictly blues context. George took it to pop and changed it forever. This is a great and early example of George’s approach. This is not quite as strong as the Plastic Ono Band. Or walls and bridges. But it’s pretty strong. One of my maxims is that the worst things the Beatles did would have made the career of lesser acts. Here, in the title track it also made Lennon’s solo career.

With meditation there’s no limit to what we can…imagine

Strong highlights in this one. There's a high chance I'm gonna rate it higher later but this was a very nice listen. Alan White is a great drummer and John's vocals are pretty superb. There are some moments (aka songs) I'm meh on but look at those highlights! Highlights: "Imagine", "Jealous Guy", "I Don't Want to Be a Soldier", "How Do You Sleep?", "How" & "Oh Yoko".

I think it is a bit uneven, but the best songs are immense! "Jealous Guy" and "Oh My Love" includes some of the most beautiful piano parts ever set to tape. 4 stars

A solo album from the main Beatles dude that is filled with mostly good songs. Imagine that! Highlights are Imagine, Jealous Guy and Paul McCartney love letter How Do You Sleep?

Lovely

Very good stuff, dated but still good, especially the singles (Jealous guy and imagine) Slightly spoilt IMO by the poor recording quality

Great songwriting with memorable melodies even if some songs (anything Yoko-related) initiate a gag-reflex.

Launching off the Beatles springboard. Where any of them greater than the sum of their parts. A solid 4.

Contains his most iconic track and mainstream songs. By his standards quite predictable.

Overrated. 7/10

This feels like peak heartfelt and uneven John, with the penchant for oversharing, though that tendency served him better than McCartney's sentimentality. He just holds it together to deliver an enjoyable record of pretty high (and mostly sustained) quality. Title cut is an all-timer, of course, 20th-century top-10 for sure (even it's been misused by sentimentalists around the world). Other highlights include "Jealous Guy" and "Oh Yoko!" and "Crippled Inside."

surprisingly better than beatles

++: Crippled Inside, Jealous Guy, It's So Hard, I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier, Gimme Some Truth, How Do You Sleep?, How? +: Imagine, Oh My Love +- Oh Yoko! 8,8/10

The Beatles streak lives, this is my third Beatle-related album in the past 9 on here. I have a small personal connection to this album. I didn't plan for it at the time, but I ended up getting engaged right next to the Imagine Peace Tower. This is a Lennon memorial that Yoko dedicated to him that's located on a small island off the coast of Reykjavik, Iceland. It's a really incredible song, the monument is in a beautiful location overlooking the city, and now it's part of my life too. Getting this album made me think about that time, it was a good day. Anyway, onto the album. This is his second solo album after the Beatles split, and he was really not happy with Paul McCartney when he wrote this. It starts off with "Imagine", which is almost so famous that it feels mildly tacky (the celebrity video during the pandemic did not help matters), but I still love it. "Jealous Guy" is the other standout on the front side of the album, it's a very close second for me on here, the lyrics show incredible vulnerability. There's a bit of a lull on the rest of the A side, but it picks up again on the B side. It's a strong 5-song run, including "Oh My Love" (a standout) and "How Do You Sleep?" (a pretty direct attack at McCartney, Lennon says there's no hard feelings though). There's a lot of really strong songs on here, and "Imagine" and "Jealous Guy" are exceptional, but on the whole it falls a bit short of the Beatles at their best. It's still an incredibly strong album, and the bar that I'm using here is probably unfairly high, but it is what it is. I'm thinking about Iceland again, that was a fun trip. Favorite song: Imagine Other: Crippled Inside, Jealous Guy, Gimme Some Truth, Oh My Love, How Do You Sleep?, How?, Oh Yoko! 11/15/24

imagine peter griffin. john lemmon so good. 9/10

I dunno. I can appreciate it for what it was but I think we’re all too cynical and know too much about John to really fall for it anymore

Really good. I mean I am a Beatles fan but this has better tracks than a few Beatles albums. John is clearly flexing here but he has the chops to pull it off. Also the McCartney diss track is sick.

Grundsätzlich toll. Aber ruhigi balladene stönd am john lennon ganz klar besser als luti "rockigi" songs. Somit chammmer aber säge dass mindestens 30 prozent vo dem album absolut top sind, de rest ganz oke.

While the production is unique to the point the songs start sounding to similar, the songwriting lifts it up.

I love John Lennon so it pains to me say that I never really liked this album. It of course gave us the amazing title track, which is arguably one best composition of his entire career. It's a beautiful song that's been used to evoke feelings of calm and memories. It was possibly the most famous song on the post-9/11 'do not play' list for American radio stations which worried that the anti-religion message wouldn't sit well with people. Despite that, people urged it to be played anyway, for it's powerful anti-war message and the 'brotherhood of man'. The song has lived so far beyond what the Beatles had achieved, which is no easy feat. It combines a beautiful melody with a plea for peace, while still being challenging and shocking. Now imagine (pun intended) that that song was taken off the album. Imagine it was released by an artist you'd never heard of. Would it be on this list? Would you have ever heard of it? It's frankly a pretty weak album overall. Comparatively, Lennon's debut solo album is varied, experimental, energetic, and freeing. 'Imagine' (the album) is surprisingly slow with only a few highlights. It lacks the hooks and risk taking that Lennon was so well known for. 'Oh Yoko!' is the next best song and holds up well. 'Crippled Inside' is also pretty good. The rest doesn't excite me much. Yes there's some of the powerful political messages that he was famous for, but that's washed out a bit by confessions of jealousy and pettiness towards Paul McCartney. I acknowledge that McCartney did his part in this very public feud but at least 'Ram' is a great album. The album obviously sold very well and gets a 4 from me. But honestly, that title track is doing a lot of heavy lifting. It just deserved to be on a better album.

Gotta love how George Harrison played on some songs on this album including the diss track towards Paul. This album is a little savage and shows John not holding back like he did with The Beatles. Great album but suffers from being overproduced and having some weaker songs.

One great song, some other good ones, balancing things out to a solid 4

Some really good songs and some average songs, just enough for 4 stars or B-.

John Lennon is my favourite artist. Now this isn’t the best of his solo albums but it’s definitely very high up. This album is a classic. Stand out tracks Imagine Crippled Inside JEALOUS GUY it’s So Hard How Do You Sleep HOW? Oh YOKO (The 3 other tracks are also really good just ones mentioned above are the ones I like the most) This is basically as good as it gets. Not sure I can go the full 5 because I like a couple Lennon albums more , but this is definitely A strong 4.5/5 (Side note I recently went to New York City and one of my goals was to go to Central Park and see the Strawberry Fields (memorial) What I did not know was the Dakota Building was very close to it. I told myself I’d never want to see the place where he was murdered. However on our bike tour that was one of the stops and our guide says to this day people still stand outside his old apartment building. Anyways when he handed me the pamphlet of what we see on the tour and it showed old newspaper clippings on the day he died, it was all too much and I broke down in tears. It’s been over 40 years since Johns been gone and I wasn’t even alive when he died. Yet for someone I never knew , Let alone was around when they left this world to have this great of an effect on me Must mean something. I leave this now with these famous lines “All You Need Is Love, Love Is All You Need”

This would be an easy five for me if not for Imagine. Every other song is unique, does so much with the instrumentation, he’s innovative, it’s cool, it’s different, but then there is the unforgivable smugness of this fucker.

Johnny ate

Jawn Lennon

Probably John's poppiest and most accessible solo record.

A nice album. Some songs aren't my favorite but overall I think I enjoyed it.

Actually very fun. Why the hate (other than the obvious reasons). Imagine (the song) is the thesis statement for the 60s. The bitter songs are funny and honest. Yeah he's a bad guy I know.

He can write songs

Couple of belters, the rest of the album not as good but still enjoyable.

It's cute.

2 great songs but rest is clearly below the Beatles 'ones

I am the walrus. 4

Classic. It’s great. Something is missing, though. None of The Beatles were ever as good without their band mates who helped them create magic. It’s close, but close only counts in horseshoes, grenades, and slow dancing.

No matter how one feels about John Lennon as a person, his songwriting ability and overall icon status in music history is undeniable. This solo record is a perfect demonstration of that. It's got a good mix of emotional piano-led songs and up-tempo Beatles-esque catchy tunes. While not all of his tracks are exactly my vibe, Lennon (particularly with "Imagine") showed here that he is not entirely defined by The Beatles. Notable Tracks: - Imagine - Crippled Inside - Jealous Guy - Oh Yoko! - unfortunately a very catchy tune 7/10

A real treat

ive not heard plastic ono band yet but from what i know about it this seems like an attempt to counteract that album's whole-hearted bitterness with something sweeter and more digestible. the results are predictably solid if amusingly compromised-feeling considering how much contemporary reception was propping up lennon as the Real Artist of the beatles (while trashing paul's Ram, a much more melodically and sonically exciting, and better aged, record than this imo). a whole album of post-1967 john lennon was always gonna be a bit hard for me to fully vibe with tbh...he plays rly well as part of the larger collage of personalities in the beatles, but its a little difficult for me to feel as stirred when he's out here on his own...but he's a skilled tunesmith, phil spector brings subtle but resonant colors, and john's biggest advantage had long revealed itself to be a propensity towards emotional nakedness without layers of showmanship. i like showmanship, but as much as i mock the contemporary deification of the guy, i can absolutely understand why he was so refreshing

Lennon’s acerbic wit - ‘imagine there’s no heaven’ - wrestles with his anger and his vulnerability to produce some absolutely great songs.

Skipped track 1, Imagine. Overheard. I find it tedious. Some really good blues-y tracks through, but I find his voice is an odd sound, like too distant or echoey. Shout out to tracks: - 2 (Crippled Inside) - 3 (Jealous Guy) - 4 (It's So Hard) Track 5 (I Don't Want To Be A Soldier Mama) has a great blues / honky piano in the background throughout. And now that I'm going through each track again quickly, and I'm noticing the subtleties more. It's actually pretty good. Tracks 2-9. Also skipped 10 (Oh Yoko), because, Yoko.... but strong album, interesting sounds. Not a favourite album, but worth a revisit at some point.

I enjoyed this album more than I thought I would. I do love The Beatles. Having said that, John ranks 4th in my personal Beatles rankings. One factoid I love about Beatles solo albums (and other rock albums from this era) is that Jim Keltner and Klaus Voormann are band members in a surprisingly high percentage of them.

This is definitely a great album with some timeless classic tracks like “Jealous Guy” and “Oh My Love.” I personally love how piano-driven the album is, and the orchestral arrangements throughout really add a lot of color to the music.

Okay. I get that everyone hates John Lennon. So do I. He was a trash human. But that's no reason to give him a bad rating. These songs, while all sounding kind of the same, have really talented songwriting behind them. They're lame, but they're an improvement on Beatles lame. It's very meaningful music when you can get past the hypocrisy behind 'Imagine'.

Has some of his best compositions and most enduring solo works. Personal favs how do you sleep and gimme some truth.

I remember when I was younger that John Lennon was my favourite Beatle, then I learned about how he treated his first wife and Julian and I found that unforgiveable. Then you go on to learn about his own childhood and it gives some context to some of his actions. I have always like John's solo works and I have always liked his voice, its funny that Julian sounds so much like him. Stand out tracks: - Imagine (even though I would be happy not to hear it again) - Crippled Inside - Jealous Guy - Oh My Love - How?

A great first album! I think my favorite thing about this album is how obvious Lennon's feelings about the breakup of the Beatles and of Paul are. I especially love the references to Sgt. Pepper, Yesterday, and Just Another Day on "How Do You Sleep?". Favorite song(s): How Do You Sleep?, Oh My Love Least favorite song(s): It's So Hard, I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama Listened before? No

Very good album, fuck yoko ono

Up and down, some really great songs!

I speak often about musicians in a metaphoric sense regarding where they fit into the overall scheme of professional musicians. I use a wedding plan as the schema. The head table is where the bride and groom hold their court with best men and bridesmaids, the front few tables are close famiily and friends, second row good friends, third row is family that politely gets invited and friends and guests of friends and soforth. With musicians, sometimes they are prolific, such as John Lennon. Here we have a quandary. Where to put him? Well, this is kind of a trick question because unlike many musicians who are "known" for a specific band or act, and go out on their own or do side projects with others -- Which make it so they might be seated at different tables depending, John Lennon has ALWAYS been seated at the head table. Life was cruel when they took him from us.

Second Lennon album in a weeks span. The album feels like a deep breath, the music is straightforward, with melodies that resonate. There’s a vibe similar to Paul Simon’s work—relaxed, but meaningful. It’s not trying too hard, just delivering something real and honest. The Beatles were great because they had the influence of the four members. Break them apart and you can hear each's contributions.

Better than I expected. After the first track for some reason it feels more like John Lennon copying people than John Lennon writing songs. Hard to explain.

80% Fav: Imagine, Jealous Guy, I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama, How Do You Sleep At Night? Must-Hear? Sure

Svært glad for den her plade.

Whatever you think of Lennon’s personal behavior, “Imagine” is a profoundly important political anthem. The rest of the songs are good to great.

Incredible songs, two dud blues songs in the middle. Oh my love is proto for ella

great album, imagine was amazing, one of the best songs of all time in my opinion, some other great songs too, jealous guy was great with some nice piano, How? was a brilliant remake of the beatles song The Long and Winding Road which was really nice to listen to.

El mejor Lennon. Todavía resonando a Beatle. Después se acomodó demasiado. Eso sí; es una pesadilla volver a oír Imagine canción por su utilización masiva.

Easily the best solo career among the Beatles. Great album

Ok idk if John is my favorite Beatle... but maybe! But at least he never teamed up with Michael Jackson. But he did team up with Yoko… hmmm Good thing they had both Paul and John.

Some special songs here

Imagine there’s no music. Damn deep.

Not enough bangers

Så bra, har tyckt om detta album länge. Älskar: Jealous guy Oh Yoko Oh my love, så fin text :’(((<3 Hade gett 4.5 om det gick

Imagine 3.8 Crippled Inside 4 Jealous Guy 4.5 It's So Hard 3.8 I Don't Want to Be a Soldier 4 Gimme Some Truth 4.1 Oh My Love 3.8 How Do You Sleep? 4.2 How? 3.6 Oh Yoko! 3.2 Score: 3.9

Here we go, the big one from Mr. Lennon. Leaving aside that nightmare compilation of celebrities singing "Imagine" that really just embodied the insanity that COVID caused in all of us, the song is fantastic. A couple other great tracks on here, “Jealous Guy” is a cool one, Pusha T sampled a cover of that on “Dreaming of the Past.” I like hearing the love for Yoko too, cheesy but it’s genuine. Favorite tracks: Imagine, Jealous Guy, Oh My Love, How Do You Sleep, Oh Yoko. Album cover: Really wispy, washed out picture of John. Kind of ominous as it looks like a shot of someone who had been murdered. 4/5

-this is a great album -it has a calm vibe, like lying in bed on a rainy day -the production does remind me of Let It Be at times, considering that Phil Spector produced it -this is my first Beatles solo album I ever listened to -John's writing on this album is great, but there is one song in particular that I dont like the lyrics of, "How Do You Sleep". Think of this song as a diss track, towards the person John considered a brother at one point, Paul McCartney. Considering these two were the best of friends some point in time, for John to write this song, it's a little sad. It does sound good, I'll give it that. -not all songs are perfect -I expected it to be much better than this (4 stars), considering this is John Lennon we are talking about, and I am a Beatles fan -I love John's vocal performances on this one -"Oh, My Love" is an underrated Lennon song -favorite songs: the title track (<3), Jealous Boy, Gimme Some Truth (<3), How?, Oh Yoko!, Power To The People, Well (Baby Please Don't Go) (<3), Happy Xmas (War Is Over) (<3) -least favorite song: How Do You Sleep?

Obviously it isn’t as great as The Beatles but I do really like it and I think people go way too harsh on this album and him. He’s my favourite Beatle and my favourite songwriter

Rating: 7.5/10 Really good solo effort from Lennon, he clearly has his own sound here that does not just imitate the Beatles. Did not care for a few songs but it's mostly great.

1. N/A, 2. bra, 3. meh/bra, 4. meh/bra, 5. meh, 6. meh, 7. dårlig, 8. bra, 9. meh, 10. bra Overall: 7.5/10

Loved this. As good as some of the best Beatles output. 'Gimme Some Truth' is a right stomper. Then you have the emotion of 'Imagine' and 'Jealous Guy'. It's great all round album, no real duff tracks.

The first two tracks are great. This is what I expect from John. I’m not a fan of the Yoko stuff. This album is great!

Pretty good for a solo Beatle album. The first three songs, especially, are very good. The rest of the album, while not at the same level, is still either enjoyable or interesting. I think full credit is merited from an artistic point of view.

pretty

Me gustaba más antes.

imagine ooolll the peopol

I used to love this album. Listened to it non-stop. Now, I'm pretty tired of it. It's not bad, it's dated, it's Lennon. The snide digs at Paul and thinking the whole world revolves around him work better at 12 than they do decades later. Mixed feelings between a 3 and a 4.

Given the title track, you'd expect this to be an easy 5-star album. The song Imagine is one of the best, most famous, and most memorable anthems in rock history. It overshadows most of the rest of the album, which is still fairly strong but a bit scattershot. The melodies are a little undercooked and the lyrics are all over the place, but I think by pure lucky coincidence Lennon happened to hit several home runs here. Some of these tracks shouldn't work, what with the melodic/lyrical oddities and barebones instrumentation... but yet they do. Gimme Some Truth is a great example of this. All the musicians in the track, including Lennon himself, are playing/singing kind of halfheartedly... and yet it works. And the chorus is darn memorable (and darn good), despite consisting of a yelling monotone. The weakest track here - I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama - isn't terrible, but it's not particularly engaging. Just the title, repeated, with a bluesy, sololess backing instrumental. That being said, blues elements are prevalent throughout the album (which I wouldn't have expected from Lennon), and they're actually pretty great. All of the tracks on side 1 (excluding the title track) feature swung acoustic guitar and twangy singing over some variant of 12-bar blues. And, for the most part, they work. (Maybe it's just the novelty of having Lennon's vocal paired with an unexpected genre.) Side 2 alternates between light anthems and lighthearted ballads, with the centrepiece being How Do You Sleep?, a very thinly veiled diss track dedicated to fellow ex-Beatle Paul McCartney. Brutal. 4/5 Key tracks: Imagine, Jealous Guy, Oh My Love, Gimme Some Truth, How Do You Sleep?

Never listened to the album before and quite enjoyed it after getting past the very much over-played Imagine

A step down from Plastic Ono Band but still has that lush Spector production and the songwriting is pretty good Favourite tracks: Crippled Inside, Jealous Guy, I Don’t Wanna Be a Soldier, Oh Yoko

Best solo Beatle album I’ve heard so far.

I like this album a bit less than Plastic Ono Band, but this still contains some raw lyrics and excellent songs. Ironically, the title track is probably the weakest link.

As much as I'd like to spend time dunking on Imagine, this album makes it clear where John Lennon made his sound pronounced in The Beatles.

4/5, great album, I was born in the 90's but the songs still felt nostalgic.

Imagine is one of the great, hopeful songs of all time. The rest of the album is solid.

Stands up pretty well.

I get Beatlemania, Beatle fever. Whatever you may call it I have been converted. They can do no wrong musically ( I am sure they did some kinky shit in their prime). Which like honestly, I really wish we came up with the internet earlier because I really wanna know what Ringo was tweeting about in the Beatles prime. Like, you think Paul would have tweeted fly high John with a dove and broken heart emoji when John got shot?

This album was my introduction to Lennon years ago. Lennon has the most atmospheric catalog of any of the Beatles. I will die on the hill that he’s the most creative. Imagine (the album) and Plastic Ono Band (album) were the soundtracks of my breakup. Shit slaps man.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH YOKO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a perfevt four. This album changed the way I view John I always thought that Paul was the brain, but it may be John!!! This album also helped me differentiate what john sounds like on beatles records, I know I know. All in all I think this is a really sold work and the genres played with here are awesome. More pls

I have to rate this album higher than I thought I would. Most people will only know this album because of the title song. This album is John Lennon at his best, and his worst. That is what makes it special. He is introspective, political and witheringly spiteful. He says what he has to say and one can respect that.

This dude is simply one of the best ever. Not only a Beatle but jad a successful solo career as well as his side projects and gigs. He had the privilege of being able to choose anyone and they would all say yes in a hearbeat. This Album is insane. Only a Beatle could do ballards, country and blues in the first half and get away with it. Album is short and almost perfect. I would have placed Imagine as either the last song of side A or last song of the album. I dont want to be a soldier should have been a single cause its an amazing song very true and powerful. Clearly it was not played. Album is a lottle too slow paced for me bit that was John’s strenght powerful lyrics and themes clear to understand for anyone who was listening. I give this an easy 5⭐️. Could have been better order but works either way. Id love to hear the songs that didint make it Im sure there are some gems there as well. Must listen album

A very good collection of music from one of the greatest talents of a millennium. John's song writing, musical composition and vocal performance are absolutely iconic on this album. It took a real long time for me to appreciate this album but I'm glad I did.

John Lennon is probably my least favorite of the non-Ringo Beatles. He was always a whiney little bugger, and that is clearly on display here with the childish How Do You Sleep? For all the “peace” he preaches in Imagine, he sure wasn’t practicing it. There are also a few throwaways that sound like Beatle derivatives (i.e. Crippled Inside and It’s So Hard). I realized though that part of Lennon’s appeal is his ability to connect with the human nature in all of us. He is hypocritical and paradoxical, because we all are. Jealous Guy is probably one of his best solo tracks, and How? was the surprise gem of never heard. Overall one of the stronger solo Beatles albums.

This was a good album. It's consistently well-written and touches on a few different genres of music. I like how in-depth most of the lyrics are and what the subject matter was for most of the album.

Lots of really great songs. “Imagine” and “Crippled Inside” were my favorites.

I preferred Plastic Ono Band, but some great songs: Imagine, Crippled Inside, Jealous Guy, I Don’t Want To Be A Soldier Mama, Gimme Some Truth, How Do You Sleep?, Oh Yoko!.

An album I listened to a lot in the late 1970s as a young teenager discovering The Beatles (and solo Beatles) It’s not one I revisit all that much, but it’s still a great album. The protests, rock and roll pastiches and digs at former Beatles colleagues are very much of the time; it’s the songs of love, philosophy and introspection that are timeless.

Really good, love his voice.

Seminal solo work by the former "Beatle".

Idk if it's a classic but pretty damn good.

- really quality music

The term ‘iconic’ is too-commonly used. This is one instance where it’s properly-utilised.

This album is iconic based on the title song alone. There are some other beautiful ones as well. Trying to be objective despite problematic things that have come about about him. He used to be my favorite Beatle.

I could say alotbabout how much I love this album, but instead I'm just going to give the hot take the "How Do You Sleep At Night" is rhe greatest dis track of all time.

About a year and a half ago, I did a complete Beatles solo catalog listen. I started with the first post-Beatles release by a former Beatle (Ringo’s “Sentimental Journey,” an album I’m certain I won’t come across in this project) and then the next (Paul’s “McCartney”,) then the next and so on. It was a great way to explore their solo material and see how they each developed as artists throughout their careers. This album was the first real standout to me. I know people faun over “Plastic Ono Band” and I get why. It’s a really creative, honest album that really removes John from the Beatles image and was necessary for him to move forward. But I find some of it to be inaccessible (“Well, Well, Well,” “Mother” et al). This was his first great album if you ask me. Did I like it more maybe because it was more commercial? That’s entirely possible. But I do think there is some great material here that manages to be what John wanted while also being more accessible. “Imagine” (the song) is obviously one of his most clear statements of what he truly envisioned for the world, what he most wanted the world to be like. It’s funny because he makes this statement in a poignant song then doesn’t really ever get back to this level of seriousness. I think it should’ve been the closer, honestly. The rest is mostly great. “Crippled Inside” would’ve been a great opener. People like “Jealous Guy” but I dunno. It’s fine. “How Do You Sleep?” may be the industry’s first blatant diss track and is honestly great, made even better knowing that George Harrison played on it. Really adds to the intrigue of that entire era where the ex-Beatles were on mixed terms, at best. This listen gave me a better appreciation for the songs I didn’t know as well like “Oh My Love” and “Oh Yoko!” They’re both really sweet songs that, while maybe a little corny, showcase his sensitive and sincere side in ways he didn’t always show. Overall this is a great album. I could do without a couple tracks (namely “Jealous Guy,” “I Don’t Wanna be a Soldier Mama” and “How?”, the last of which gives me “Long and Winding Road” vibes), but it still hits and holds up today. 4 stars. Standout tracks: “Imagine,” “Crippled Inside,” “It’s So Hard,” “Oh My Love,” “How Do You Sleep?”

There's quite a few fantastic songs in "Imagine". The titular track, "How Do You Sleep?" and "I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier Mama" are my favourites. This is one of the best post-Beatles albums by any of the band's members. John's activism is visible throughout the album's lyrics and that's a good thing. It's better than some of McCartney's solo works. (Sorry Paul) 4 stars for this classic record.

Enjoyed the light hearted guitar towards the end of the album. Started off a bit moody but also enjoyed the piano work. Fairly easy listen

Not bad

me gusta mucho, tampoco me parece nada taaan del otro mundo

Honestly much better than expected, I thought it would be a lot of artsy and slow songs but this one I had a lot of fun with. Will need to check it out again

Lennon's talent is immense, and this album has some examples of what he can do. His voice is so singular, his progressions so unique. The weird thing about this album is the random bluesy tracks. The rest is greatly enjoyable.

This was better than I expected. Obviously the titular track is particularly well known (and I actually am not a huge fan), and this coloured my view of John Lennon overall. But actually, I enjoyed this in a sort of, pop rock, gentle way. Odd, given the lyrical content, but nevertheless, pretty fun to listen to.

I like this album. Again, hard to be objective about stuff you know like the back of your hand & consequently might be perfectly happy never to hear again, but it's an achievement regardless, especially so early into a solo career.

Enjoyable but not the Beatles

haven’t listened since childhood… a few good songs but not perfect

Das letzte Stück ist eine fiese Schnulze - sonst eine prima Platte!

Schnulzig aber ...

Imagine - John Lennon Imagine – 5 Crippled Inside – 4.5 Jealous Guy – 5 It's So Hard – 3.5 I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama – 3.5 Gimme Some Truth – 3 Oh My Love – 4 How Do You Sleep? – 4 How? – 3 Oh Yoko! - 4 Average - 3.95

3/22/24

A lot of excellent songs here, if some raggedness, too. The title cut exists in its own realm, but judging purely on the merits, minus all the cultural + sociopolitical baggage, it's a pop music treasure (on the same level of "Stardust," "I'm So Lonesome," and "Wonderful World"). "Jealous Guy" and "Oh Yoko!" are also first rate. One also is reminded of just how much of an entertainer's soul he seemed to have (even with dark material such as "Crippled Inside").

I like this. It sounds like a lot should be sung by David Bowie. Paul McCartney is still my fav. Good stuff though.

“You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one” I’m notoriously anti-Beatles, but they weren’t legends for no reason. Lennon’s writing on this album is certainly solid, sonically the standouts for me are when he leaned into the more gritty folk rock sound like on I Don’t Want to be a Soldier Mama and Crippled Inside. Another stand out for me was Oh My Love, a very pretty, softer song. Good album

Kyllä Lennon osaa musaa tehdä! Toimiva levy puhkikulutetusta alkuraidasta huolimatta.

I probably dug about half of the album. I admit that the remix of his older stuff was what I liked the most.

Good album

Banger album, iconic, but imagine still gives me war flashbacks from whatever the fuck that COVID time celebrity video was

Great solo record where I enjoyed almost every song. It’s difficult for me to understand the Macca hate though.

Who knew he covered GenX? ;)

downlaoded 1,2,7

Beyond the big title track, Jealous Guy is a nice slow burner with strings out of a movie soundtrack. Then we're straight into the bluesy It's So Hard. More strings come in to make it quite interesting. The longer I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier Mama kills the momentum somewhat, but Oh My Love is another good quiet piece. Last track Oh Yoko! has a bit of Bob Dylan in it. I do want to revisit this.

Classic.

I’ve definitely said this before, but as an arrogant little tweeny bopper I remember thinking The Beatles were far too overrated. Bands like Green Day and Blink-182 are way better, right?! As I’ve gotten older, despite still enjoying these bands, I’ve definitely come to appreciate how ahead of their time, and also how versatile The Beatles were. Let’s listen to John’s solo adventure! Songs I already knew: Imagine Favourites: Oh Yoko! I know people tend not to like Yoko, and she’s definitely made some really bizarre “music” at times. However, the song directly aimed towards her is just so good here! There are other good tracks too, notably Jealous Guy, and nothing sounds bad here. Imagine has probably lost some of its lustre due to being massively overplayed, even to this day, but there is no denying that this is still a good album.

Of corse the song "Imagine" stands out. "Jealous Guy", "Crippled Inside", "How Do You Sleep?" and "Gimme Some Truth" are not bad. Compared to his big name it didn´t fully match my expectations!

Stunning album. 4.5 rounded down to 4, as it's not in my upper tier.

Makes me wonder what could have been...

John Lennon had an astonishing musical career - as a part of the Beatles, and then as a solo artist (or, as a recording artist with his wife, Yoko Ono). As a part of this incredible career, it seems odd to claim that he has one, "signature" song. "Imagine" may be that song. Imagine, the album, includes that incredible song, and a collection of other songs showing Lennon's strength as a songwriter and recording artist.

A very nice, mellow album. "Imagine" is a strong intro.

This John Lennon guy is going places.

Good album

Just a bunch of really great songs

Icon, shout out Yoko

One of the greats - some of his finest work on this album.

Delicious

Choosing a favorite Beatle is like choosing a favorite child. Each had such a tremendous personality and contribution to the band and to music in general. John Lennon holds a special place, though, and is an endlessly talented songwriter and musician. What a shame we lost him so young (talking like an old person here; he died more than ten years before I was born haha). That said, my opinion is that none of the Beatles’ solo work came close to what they produced as a team. “Imagine” is John Lennon at his (solo) best—so much better than the work he did with Yoko which is so hard to digest. There’s some really good stuff here, but something’s missing from it being truly legendary (like every Beatles album!). I’ll probably give this four stars, because even a watered-down John Lennon is better than the very best of 90% of artists out there.

Was mostly familiar with this already, but Gimme Some Truth hit hard in the current post era.

Liked it better than expected, a lot of variety here.

Not as good as the proper Beatles stuff, but still pretty decent. Simpsons reference: Yes

Typical John Lennon; smooth listening though his voice is not that great. He could have left "Oh Yoko" out of this album.

Liked it more than I thought I would. Very personal sounding, not overproduced, and nice and concise. I expected a lot more BS considering it's in the era of Yoko, but it was actually kind of like Beatles B-side material.

The title track is a brilliant song that has unfortunately been beaten to death to the point where it now comes off as almost a saccharine parody of itself. Through no fault of John Lennon. That leaves “Gimme Some Truth” as the real standout track on the album - it leads the way for a stronger second half, but overall I prefer the “Plastic Ono Band” album.

I was underwhelmed upon first listen. But if I skip Imagine, which suffers from being one of the most overplayed songs and feels contrived as a result, there is a lot of like here. Surprisingly, Oh Yoko! might be my favorite track, the jangly piano is a harbinger of the brit-pop of the mid-2000s.

I enjoyed listening to it and it's entirety. Coincidentally I had already had it on my phone but had only listened to tracks on shuffle. It was interesting to hear a couple of songs that I actually knew quite well because of other people's covers that I hadn't realized I had originally been written by John Lennon

Great record, easily in the top 5 Beatles solo records. “Imagine’ gets a lot of flack for being overplayed and maybe rightly so, but tracks like ‘Jealous Guy’ and ‘I Don’t Wanna…’ are outstanding. And ‘Oh My Love’ is an underrated gem. 4.5

Oooh... John's angry. Angry at his ex-bandmates (especially Paul), angry at society, angry at his contemporaries (even while copying his perceived frenemies, The Rolling Stones), even at little angry at Yoko. Don't worry, John. Pretty soon Harry Nilsson will call you up and make it all better with a few years worth of drugs and alcohol. Good album, though.

Tuli mieleen et aika hiljasella laulu mixissä, 3/5

Interesting to listen to these songs without all the context under which they were released. Hardly a dud on here, los of variation - a good listen.

I enjoyed this much more than the previous Lennon/Ono band record, which I thought was a slog, outside of a few good tracks

very hit or miss, i only like half of the songs

This album had sweet, catchy lyrics. Such simple, universal messages were captured wonderfully.

Good album. Pianomania. Member RB3 keyboard?

Great album. How do you sleep? is a new favorite. Obvious he wrote so much of the Beatles material. Like the nods to Sgt. Pepper as well

nisam imala pojma da je lennon ovakvu muziku radio al svida mi se sad kuzim hype

Overall solid album. For the entire thing, I just kept thinking how much it reminded me of Wilco? Or I should say how much Wilco is like John Lennon. Lennon starts off strong by dreaming of the future and continues demanding answers of the present, but he doesn’t offer any solutions to get to his ideal world. I think not having answers scares him the most, which is depicted in “How?” Favorite songs: “Gimme Some Truth” and “Crippled Inside” (and of course Imagine, but that’s easy)

While listening to this album I wasn't quite sure how I felt about it but by the end it had won me over. John's lyrics have always been a little hit or miss for me and the same goes for the lyrics on this album. Sonically this album is great, songs like "How Do You Sleep?" and "Oh Yoko!" are rich and ear catching. Standout tracks are "Crippled Inside", "Oh My Love" and the previously mentioned tracks. The album as a whole is deserving of some extra listens to really digest and form an opinion.

Very John Lennon

I despise the song Imagine, and want to give the lyrics to the rest if the songs a second listen, but otherwise enjoyed this album. Musically, it’s pretty close to my general tastes.

Classic. Classic. Classic. That’s all there is to say. A must listen.

Downloaded 3 songs.

I have heard of this album before being a Beatles fan but I had not listened to it yet. I heard the song Imagine before and it is still my favourite off this album. I overall enjoyed all of the songs with just Oh Yoko! being the only meh song. My favorites other than Imagine were: Oh my love, How do you sleep?, and Jealous guy. I will definitely listen again!

Aside from the title track starts very slow. Forgettable melodies. Picks up as it goes on. Can hear how Tom Petty was influenced by him. Gimme Some Truth probably my favorite.

Good. I haven't listened to his other albums, so I can't say I think this was his best solo album, although I would think it likely was

The song imagine is kind of annoying now but I like the rest

There are a lot of good song on this album. It’s sad that there was a pretty crappy dude behind such hopeful music.

The Beatles were essentially my introduction to music. They hold a special place in my heart and I could put on any of their albums any day and have a great time. While I've heard a good chunk of it all, I'm much, much less familiar with the bands solo works. Imagine is no exception. Something I should rectify. The iconic ballad Imagine feels sonically out of place with the rest of the songs. It's so much more soft and moody than everything else. It opens the album and looms over the rest of the tracks. Nothing quite lives up to its heights. There's plenty more to like here though. I especially like the lovely closing track "Oh, Yoko!". It's a simple, playful love song that has a lot of passion behind it. Songs like I Don't Want to Be a Soldier don't really hit for me, regardless of the messaging. *Heard before.

Imagine being this salty XD

i knew the first song (imagine) and always felt emotional when listening to it so i knew this would be a great first start.

Not as emotionally naked as Plastic Ono Band, and some songs leave a little to be desired. But when Imagine is good (“Jealous Guy,” “How Do You Sleep?” and even the title track for all its oversaturation), it’s REALLY good.

Lifelong Beatles fan - from the day the guy was shot, and have only just listened to his solo stuff this year - and for this one, today. The best riff is saved for the meanest song - perfect Lennon move, with George twisting the blade. Enough good here to make the less good fade away

Really good

Prima! Laatste pokkoe hadden ze hem die harmonica wel uit z’n hand mogen slaan wat mij betreft

shocking

Lennon's sound, independent of the Beatles, is very interesting to hear beyond imagine. The classic Imagine, nevertheless, opening the album likely would have led me to stop listening to the album if I weren't baking. The songs that followed mostly sounded like they were all precursors to that one great Lennon classic.

An uneven album, with some average blues rock stuff. I don’t mind the big hits Imagine and Jealous Guy and my favourite is probably Gimme Some Truth. I think John’s voice only suits certain styles of music. With the support of The Beatles his music was awesome, The Beatles was truly more than the sum of its individual parts. There was a bit of bitterness that Paul had the more successful post Beatles career, and if you judge it by this album, you’ll probably understand why.

Side B was much better than side A, in my opinion. Still a great album from Master Lennon.

found it a bit boring

Imagine has not stood the test of time. Blame influencers for ruining it. Otherwise a nice album.

Imagine is an album that deserves to be heard, not just for its iconic title track, but for its range of emotions and musical styles. Lennon explores his personal and political views, his love and his anger, his hope and his despair. The songs are honest, raw, and sometimes controversial. Jealous Guy and I Don’t Want to Be a Soldier are haunting and vulnerable, while Give Me Some Truth and How Do You Sleep? are biting and sarcastic. The latter song is a harsh attack on his former bandmate Paul McCartney, which may seem unfair, but also reflects Lennon’s inner turmoil. The album is not perfect, nor is it Lennon’s best work, which he achieved with the Beatles. It sometimes borders on being too self-indulgent or preachy, but it also has moments of beauty and brilliance. It is a snapshot of a complex and fascinating artist. 4 stars out of 5.

Smá beef við Paul a la Ice Cube og Dre fyndið. Í heild mjög góð plata frá mistækum manni sem breytti tónlistarsögunni.

Calm, John Lennon, guitar, solo

Classic. Feels really Lennony

There are couple of overplayed classics early doors and a couple of relative duds towards the end, but most of the rest is good solid stuff - maybe better than I expected. Lennon’s bitter, political anger and softer, more loving side are both represented pretty well here. I’ll give John the same rating I gave George: 3.5 / 4

Imagine - 9.5/10 Crippled Inside - 7.5/10 Jealous Guy - 8.5/10 It's So Hard - 7.2/10 I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama - 3.6/10 Gimme Some Truth - 8/10 Oh My Love - 9.8/10 How Do You Sleep? - 7.1/10 How? - 8.9/10 Oh Yoko! - 8.8/10 Imagine - John Lennon - 8.7/10

I've only ever heard Imagine. Good to hear the rest.

It’s good

ja good

dit album gaat hard, net zo hard als john zijn kinderen sloeg

minstens 10 nummers zouden in the end of the fucking world kunnen

I think I’ve only heard Imagine. I’m really liking some of these other tracks. This guy could be going places.

I wasn’t expecting to give this four stars. But I don’t know, there’s somethings kind of cool about it? All of the songs are very distinct and memorable, but also cohesive enough to make sense together. Not a fan of imagine lol. I feel like he has something to say in this music but the songs them selves are a bit weird, but cool? I don’t know how to describe it.

Very listenable. Some tunes were catchy. Let's start first with Imagine. Yes, this is the most famous song of the album as well as its namesake, but for good reason. The song is beautiful, the chord changes are brilliant, the bridge is excellent, etc. The lyrics unfortunately are naive and idealistic, and Lennon comes across as the absolute poster boy for infantile idealism. It's a beautiful song, even if the lyrics are ridiculous. Crippled Inside is a nice little bluesy tune. Not super catchy, very average. Jealous Guy is a great song. Perhaps I'm biased as I am very familiar and partial to Elliott Smith's cover of this song. I was happy to hear that Elliott did proper homage to the original. It's so Hard is a very short unremarkable song. I don't want to be a soldier is very repetitive, uninspiring, and comes across as whiny for an anti-war song. But the song is less about being antiwar, than Lennon just trying to be whiney and edgy. Similar comments can be made about Gimme Some Truth. I'm ok with political songs if they are well done, and with specific criticisms. But singing that politicians lie is just common knowledge and not exactly a scathing brave critique. Oh My Love is actually a very good ballad. These soft love pieces are where Lennon excels. It's definitely the best song on the 2nd side. How Do you Sleep? just comes across poorly knowing this is an attack piece against McCartney. How? is the other great love ballad on this album worth listening to. Oh Yoko is actually a catchy good tune, despite the fact that it's about the insufferable Yoko Ono. Overall, Lennon is a masterful musician. There are 10 songs on this album. 4 of these songs are absolutely brilliant. 6 of them are filler. But the 4 are excellent enough to push my rating of the whole album up to a 4.

Heard before. Paints an interesting mood. Caught the Beatles references, or at least one. Interesting lyrics, make me think about John Lennon's personality in general, Jealous Guy in particular. + Imagine + Crippled Inside + Jealous Guy + I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama + Gimme Some Truth + Oh My Love

Overall it felt, cozy. Some of the sound qualities (spaciousness) reminded me of the way Jai Paul produces his music.

Would listen to it again. There are some really nice songs on it. Obviously "Imagine" is really great. With around 40 mins it is not super heavy to listen to.

The title track is undeniable. It’s an amazing piece of art. The rest of the album is, in my opinion, mostly forgettable, although pleasant enough to listen to.

As the title track is iconic (to the point of being a bit tired for me) I had some high hopes for this album. Mind you, it's good, but I never felt that it went beyond that. I enjoyed the listen, but I never got excited about any of it. Maybe it was high expectations of a legend. "I Don't Want to be a Soldier," for example, made its point early on, and just got old quickly in a 6 minute track.

Oops...I though I had submitted this last night... I was familiar with a couple of tracks, but many were new to me. I liked it quite a bit. Definitely worth the listen.

Yeah it's good. John is my #3 Beatle but this is just an undeniably good listen.

Almost excellent-4.5/5 great album.

Yesterday I had the 1970 McCartney solo album and today I have John's 1971 Imagine record. It's a head-to-head battle with a foregone conclusion. I already submitted my review in which I call Paul my second favorite Beatle. If you know me you know that Ringo and George aren't number one. I understand John may have been a terrible person in life sometimes, but I've always been drawn to his songs more and I thought of all the Beatles his solo work was the most compelling. Honestly, it's hard for me to listen to this record without some serious feels.

Listened to it before so didn't bother. 2nd best of his post beatles 3rd best post beatles album.

It was ok. Soft lyrics and sound felt good. 3.5/5

Imagine was a great song. Never heard the rest of the album before. I was impressed how varied the songs were.

Enjoyed this more than I thought. I came in with pre-conceived notions as I had read some  not so favourable things about Lennon previously. Well written/composed songs, differing styles.

amor mío 8/10 <3

Cool, with great lyrics etc. 4

Imagine is a classic song for a reason, even if it's a bit overplayed. The rest of the album is pretty decent, but nothing else really grabbed me.

I believe this to be Lennon’s best solo album, and even if there are some moments of bad production, it overall captures the heart of a cynical legend.

I’m sad to say I didn’t listen to this album as much as I should have. The title track is so prophetic and what we should all be aiming for. John wasn’t my favourite Beatle but he was a genius and generally I love his music so I’m giving 4*

Holy shit. Something Phil Spector produced and didn't ruin.

definetely one of my fav lennon solo album

August 27, 2023 Big Beatles fan here, incredibly uninformed when it comes to their solo stuff though, to the point I’m hearing some songs for perhaps the 1st time. Biggest surprise is “Soldier”, a dirge-y, bluesy jam in the middle that I liked more than expected. Less surprising is that Phil Spector didn’t know when to leave something the hell alone, as evidenced in my favourite solo Beatles project, All Things Must Pass. Even so, his schmaltz doesn’t make “Jealous Guy” (formerly “Child of Nature”) any less great for me HL: “Jealous Guy”, title track, “I Don’t Want To Be A Soldier…”, “Oh My Love”, “

this album really is a product of its time as in that musically its great as an album but looking at it with the modern lense of how we now listen and perceive music nowadays it hasnt aged the best due to the simple subject matter of a lot of the songs being political issues in the 70s it really is only stuck in that time period except for songs like jealous guy which is really the stuff john pulls off better being these strong ballads of pure emotion that dont try to be anything more than a personal look at john himself. as a singular entity this album is truly great but as a collection of songs it comes off a little bit flimsy in parts and a lot of that is due to its subject matter which is also the main reason the songs from this album are so hard to cover, the thing about this album is that you have to look at it from a historical music stand point to really get the full potential of it and with the modern age of playlists and short form content, other than a few songs, this album doesnt hold up like it used to but like i said as a full album it is pretty great if we look at this album purely from a musical standpoint it has aged almost perfectly with amazing production on "i dont wanna be a soilder mama" giving this echoing haunting effect (which does go against it with it starting to become droning to listening to after a while) and harrisons guitar solo on "gimme some truth" truly pulls the entire thing together for me. speaking about gimme some truth if i had to pick one best song from this record that would have to be it, its also one of the only ones that holds up very well today lyrically and musically. id also have to give honourable mention to how do you sleep which maybe didnt age the greatest with its lyrics directed at paul mccartney it still holds up very well musically, another honourable mention has to go to oh my love and oh yoko, the first being a truly beautiful song that just feels so perfect and the second just being a a fun and sweet bookend for the album

Glatt överraskad. Aldrig gett mig in på Lennons sologrejer men detta var en riktigt bra skiva. Gillar arrangemangen och instrumentationen. Inget för avancerat eller för enkelt, en lagom blandning av det. Favoritlåtar: Crippled Inside Oh My Love Jealous Guy

This is the second time I get this album. I still think it is a good one but I think it is uneven. "Jealous Guy" is a beautiful song as well as "Gimme some truth". "Imagine" has been played to death though. So do I rate the whole album or it's individual songs? I think this gets a weak 4, the above mentioned songs are extremely good but I don't feel like I gain anything from listening to the whole album. Still though giving it a 3 seems a bit harsh.

Some very timeless songs on this album, overall a good listen.

I needed this today. I needed Lennon's feelings of love and anger and angst and joy.

john lennon taking on topics of interpersonal relationships, religion, war, and his fallout with the beatles. a crucial album where lennon carves his own path separate from his legacy with the legendary band.

Bon album très simple à écouter. En faisant quelque chose à côté on ne voit pas le temps passer

Knew more than I thought. Dis track against McCartney had George on slide guitar! Bluesy-er than the Beatles. Enjoyed the whole album. I’ve never heard “How?” before, and what a time in my life to hear that song. Just as good as the title track

Wel een lekker album. Zonder al te grote ergernissen naar geluisterd. Ome John is wel een beetje een pannenkoek, maargoed. Tussen de 3 en de 4. Ik zal omhoog afronden vandaag.

Wonderful. At times a bit soppy, but there are plenty of great songs on here for me.

Imagine just make me think of Gal Gadot now but this is a really solid album

Imagine is butts but the rest of the album is great

Lennon’s best album? Yes.

As we all were, I was indoctrinated with "Imagine" as a kid. "Crippled inside" might be the classiest song I've ever heard. Yeah, Gimme some truth.
