Reviews (page 13 of 14)
As it's been the trend 3 albums now, Michael Jackson albums are: very good and very enjoyable but there is that ever present filler in the deep cuts of the album between all the other great stuff that I'm already really familiar and really in love with (Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, c'mon). It's like, the singles are unbeatable, some songs are great, but then you have things like The Girl Is Mine or The Lady in My Life which I'm not crazy about on first listen and just kinda make the flow of the album just slow down to a crawl. Still, it's a Michael Jackson album, how can I not like it?
Bangers but also mj so..
Iconic and objectively an amazing album. A few dud songs, overexposure to the big songs and just generally not being that into MJ means my personal experience listening to it is less enjoyable.
So many memories
Great singles but I find the rest of the album kind of forgettable
ive listened to it a handful of times and i think the paul mccartney song will make me commit a crime
It's taken me a few days to land on a rating for this one. It's obviously a masterpiece in its genre and an album that changed the music industry forever. I try to rate based on my own experience of each album and not let things like that sway me too much but it's very hard not to. On the one hand, you won't find many better runs anywhere than Thriller - Beat It - Billie Jean. On the other, that's only a third of this record. And similar to my criticisms of Off The Wall and Bad, the slow songs are so unbelievably forgettable. To the point where this, one of the world's most famous albums and one I've heard plenty of times, contains at least three tracks I barely recognised and that did nothing for me at all. It also contains The Girl Is Mine, one of the most shocking examples of a product equalling far less than the sum of its parts. So I'm going to come down on the 3 side of the 3/4 fence. Because I know that while I'm happy to hear this album when it comes on, I'll never choose to put it on myself.
Some amazing songs but also some really bad misses.
Objectively good but not my vibe.
I thought this would be a 5 star album only drug down by Jackson's extremely problematic legacy. But, honestly, a number of these songs (outside of the trifect at the center of the album) don't hold up and feel thin, dated and in the case of PYT... icky.
Im Ganzen ein gutes Album.
Billie Jean is the only song I really liked on this album. Thrillers alright but yeah I just don’t really like Michael jackson
7.8 - Iconic album more my vibe but not really
★★★★★-☆☆=★★★
Obviously an iconic album. So many incredible songs in one spot. But after the doc, I can’t help but feel like it’s all a creepy lie. Shame :/ Also it’s not his fault but a lot of these got overplayed so they aren’t as exciting.
Not as good as off the wall but a pretty solid album backloaded with some hits. It’s like the Super Smash Bros of pop music. Paul McCartney, Vincent Price, Van Halen, produced by Vincent Price
Meh. Not my cup of tea, but mad respect for Quincy Jones' master production work. Made this record a hit machine, not that it wouldn't have been otherwise.
I don't think this is the best pop album I've ever listened to but I certainly understand why people feel this way about it. Oh, and MJ & Paul are funny together in "The Girl Is Mine".
Was never a huge fan but looking back it's nostalgic and pretty good!
OK
Outside of the hits this album has a lot of filler. Also he isn't a pedo, that's a lie concocted by jews and the media
You don't get get to be the best selling record of all time by chance
King of pop. Pop. Er jo bra liksom, men ikkje heilt min greie
Michael Jackson is probably one of the best male vocalists of all time, and even before I changed this from a 3 to a 4, I could admit that. I think I factored in how overrated the album was into my rating prior, or maybe I just was not open enough. Either way, I get the appeal, not the 2nd best album of all time(, Apple Music).
I've had this album from mid 80's on and I thought I liked it quite a bit, but taking a listen to it now I found it's quite severily lacking as a full coherent album. It's a bit spread out, reaching for the new stuff, but keeping a tight hold of the old. I like the older stule Motown stuff quite a bit, be it traditional or the newer. I do not like the slow stuff, Girl is Mine with Macca was not good at all. I feel like I've only listened to the A-side of the album as a kid, because some of those "extra" tracks are just not that good.
Billie Jean > Beat It >> Human Nature > Thriller >> everything else. I knew the most popular 3 and they are probably some of the best music ever made. I was caught off guard by Human Nature. I could take or leave the rest, but it's still MJ so it's good. 3/5, maybe 3.5?
It’s no Cheap Thrills by AI pop superstar SIA, but I dig it. 3/5
The hits stick, everything else gives me the ick.
Idk if it's over listening or the fact that I listened to Bad last night but I was just bored I really do love a lot of these songs but I think it lacks cohesion The cultural impact of this album is crazy though and I do understand a lot of the hype. Banger after banger as far as recognizable songs go but it just wasn't doing it for me today
For an album that is as iconic as this, it's pretty clear that consistency across the tracklist is not the draw here. Four categories are apparent: Amazing tier: Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean Good tier: Wanna be Startin' Something, PYT Meh tier: Baby Be Mine, Human Nature, The Lady In My Life The Girl is Mine tier: The Girl is Mine Despite the inconsistency, and the fact that TGIM exists, it still has some classic bops and good tracks and needs to be on this list. Just certainly NOT Michael Jackson's best. 3/5
Here for the pop hits, not the slow ballads.
Richtige Knaller neben Einschlafhilfen.
Well this didn’t age all that well. But 10 year old me would have given it 5 stars
I don't like it tho. Not my vibe. Although it's a legend.
Look. It's a classic album by a superstar (Quincy Jones) and a music legend (MJ). But, there is some real duds here alongside the classics. Beat It is really good, and well produced. The Girl Is Mine though id complete pants and Paul Mc is wasted on that. Averages out to a three for me. I get why it's so popular. I'm old enough to remember the excitement as a kid watching the Thriller clip when it came out. Novelty value only now, I don't get much from this.
Honestly carried by the opening track and that legendary 3 song run in the middle. The rest of it has aged pretty poorly in terms of the stilted production. Undeniably influential but is nowhere near the classic people hold it up as.
ok
...(.
One of the most iconic albums of all time. This album stayed at the #1 spot on charts for 37 non-consecutive weeks. All of the singles from this album reached the top 10 on the Billboard 100. This is the best selling album of all time with over 32 million copies. That’s absolutely insane! With that record, this album had at least a little bit of a reputation to live up to. I didn’t know what to expect for the most part coming into this. There’s definitely some good tracks here, but the other tracks just don’t do anything for me personally. This album is very 80s, and that’s for better or for worse most of the time. Some songs do great with the sound, while other songs I think make it sound more of its time. To me the album really wanes in the beginning and end. The Paul McCartney duet on “The Girl Is Mine” was unexpected and nice, albeit a little bit cheesy sometimes. “Thriller,” “Beat It,” and “Billie Jean” are some of the most iconic songs of all time, and for good reason. They’re iconic and still fun to listen to after being released over 40 years ago, which is impressive. Micheal’s performance is stellar, as expected. I think he does better on some songs more than others though here. His voice really adds to what makes this album special. While I do respect this album, how iconic it is, and how much of an impact this had on music, I don’t think it’s perfect. I completely understand why people may like this more than I do however. If you like some good old 80s pop tunes, this might be for you.
I’m a child of the 70s and grew up with Michael Jackson at the top of his game. While I don’t mean to be contrarian, I’ve never really understood why this album is regarded as the pinnacle of pop. Don’t get me wrong; some of the songs are absolutely exceptional. “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’,” “Billie Jean,” and “Beat It” are classics that will be cherished for decades to come. And every Halloween, we’ll reliably hear “Thriller,” even if it does come off as a bit tacky. However, let’s focus on the album itself. Jackson shines when he channels Stevie Wonder on “Human Nature,” but on the other hand we have tracks like “Baby Be Mine,” “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing),” and “The Lady in My Life.” Unfortunately, these three songs barely rise above mediocrity, and the less said about “The Girl Is Mine,” the better. The hits undeniably had a significant impact on pop music, but as an album, "Thriller" falls short.
6.5/10
201/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
Not all great songs, but the ones that are were great, thrilling even. Medium 3.
How do I rate this? In the pop world this album was a huge phenomenon with multiple bangers so it deserves 5 stars and to be on a list of albums you should hear but do I WANT to listen to it? Not really. It was an OK listen and I don't mind hearing anything from this album inadvertently (except maybe the improbable and mawkish, "The Girl Is Mine") but I would never choose to listen to this on my own.
I like all of the hits on this album (Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, PYT), but the remaining songs were pretty blah. Not sure why they started the album with the 3 weakest songs. Maybe it’s because I already know those songs so well that the surprise factor is gone, but overall I wasn’t super impressed with this album. Still enjoyable though.
My mom listened to this one when she was vacuuming the house back when I was very small. This is the first time I've heard it without a lot of background noise. It's very danceable and catchy. I see why it's on the list. But I think I like it better with the vacuum.
Album was fun. Had mostly good songs and a few very popular tunes. Liked “P.Y.T” the most. 3.5/5 Might listen again
PYT did not age well did it? I guess I'm here to rate an album though.
Hits are hits, the rest are not my jam. 3
Beat It, Billie Jean, P.Y.T., Thriller. Just loaded with hits. Best selling record of all time. Most of the non-hits sound kind of dated. It is also, of course, a shame that he molested children.
It's hard to set aside everything that happened since, but this album was absolutely a triumph.
Best synth tones, but overall mid
Not as instantly catchy as his others
3.5 Not my type of music but this undeniably fun.
So I liked this album more than I thought I would. And now I know who to blame for the introduction of keyboards into popular music. Personal Enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5
Decent album. There were really only a few good songs on here, the rest were pretty meh. 3/5
The one with the obnoxious overplayed hits, yeah.
Very influential album. Not my thing though
Classic album but not myvscene
The year is 1983 and I am six years old. I am sitting at the kitchen table in the house I grew up in, listening to Thriller (the song) on a cassette through a huge silver boom box. I keep rewinding the tape and playing that song over and over. My parents are in the living room yelling into the kitchen wondering what is so great about that song that I have to keep listening to it instead of coming in to watch Hee-Haw with them. This has to be one of my earliest music-related memories. Now that I think about it, this might have been the origin of my enjoyment of strange, dark & theatrical music. Did Thriller send me down a path that ended with heavy psych and metal? Maybe. Listening 41 years later, that song still kicks butt. The album has three of the best pop songs ever written right in the middle of the run. Even with the hindsight of what MJ became, it is impossible to deny his genius as an artist. However, since we DO have the benefit of knowing what he was and what he became, I'm taking two stars away because of the ridiculous obsession with objectification of women (not unique to MJ in the 80s) and for the overall cringe-worthiness of a few of the tunes (PYT, The Girl is Mine). As I say on almost every album that comes up from this era...the 80s were a strange time to be alive.
Joo-o vähän haastavaahan tätä on kuunnella ja DJ:n näkökulmsta tähän ongelmaan törmää usein. MJ:n tuotannosta oon itse soittanut vanhaa Jackson 5:a, ajalta jolloin M oli lapsi eikä kiinnostunut lapsista. 3/5
Hittien ympärillä yllättävän meh pop-levy. Helppo kolmonen mut neloseen tekee kyl vähän tiukkaa.
The hits are undeniable
Hyi...
This might be my favorite MJ album, but it also makes me realize that maybe I don't like Michael Jackson solo all that much. Thriller is a great song, but I love the video more than the music. Everything else on here is either things I've heard a zillion times (which is no fault of this album) or just kind of 'eh'.
Music is funky Michael is weird Duet with Paul is bananas
This was a fun album. I’ve never really had an issue with Michael Jackson, but because he’s always been such a big deal, I’ve tended to overlook him and focus on other artists. It’s not something I can see myself coming back to often unless there’s a specific reason, but it definitely wasn’t time wasted either.
Wanna be Startin' Somethin' is actually a pretty cool way to open an album - I like this track more than I remembered. The guy is at the top of his game here, and this album has some great moments. And some dreadful ones: Baby be Mine, and The Girl is Mine. Yuck. And the last three tracks ... really bad. But Thriller (the track) still sounds great - (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️) I remember watching the video when it was released, at a friend's house - the whole family watched! It was an event! And what an amazing video/track it is. One must remember I was very into Vincent Price films at this point. And Scooby Doo! Then there's Beat It ... and Billie Jean. Not bad at all. I thought I would dislike this more than I did ... but "no mere mortal can resist the evil of the thriller" ... maniacal laughter. Excellent.
Not Bad, but it doesn't thrill me.
disco pop we need more disco pop hee hee letsgo my favorite song: thriller
A quintessentially Michael Jackson album full of classic hits that aims to excite and touch my inner child, but rather makes it feel bored and maybe a little uncomfortable. Thriller is a classic hit that has been so run into the ground I'm unable to actually enjoy any part of it except for the unceasing HEE HEEs. If the whole song had been just HEE HEEs, I would genuinely have enjoyed it more. Thriller is obviously the obvious hit, so I was pleasantly surprised when Beat It started playing. Unfortunately, all I could envision was Weird Al inflation porn (which honestly might be better than this album). While I've never been a massive fan of Mr Jacksons work, I can see how it was exciting at the time. The synths, the catchy melodies, poppy tunes, Paul McCartney and MJ having an unusual amount of strange conversation about possessing a woman that kind of felt like she might have been a metaphor for who is going to top, the hee hees, the white glove, the chorus of singers saying "something something Microsoft". It is alI quite theatrical. I definitely have to say that this is a timeless album and doesn't grow old, just like the bodies of those kids buried behind that she'd on the Neverland ranch.
Was listening to the start of the Album in the shower but I remember it being mid and fuck me did I not like that Paul McCartney song. Meat is MJ's 3 best songs back to back to back Thriller, Beat it (off?) and Billie Jean. That last one is about being a deadbeat dad and praying to god he can Millie Rock on daytime court TV. Rest of the Album is whatever. Overall what he did to those kids was bad 3/5
Man, this one has a lot of hits. I don't particularly like the hits, but they're pretty undeniable. The non-hits are a touch goofy / lame.
I loved this album when I owned it as an eight-year-old. And I can definitely see why it is so highly ranked on this list. But my score is based on how much I enjoyed it today and the likelihood that I would listen to it tomorrow.
It has the good singles, but the rest is quite forgettable. I don’t think the next generation will look kindly on the album.
Big expectations for this one - but overall pretty meh. Some catchy songs and musically very interesting. Lyrically, a little cheesy in places. I am glad I listened but dont need to add this to the regular rotation.
4 good singles and the rest is cringe tat. The Paul McCartney track is particularly awful
Standard.
I liked this album much more than I thought I would. Not a big fan of PYT.
Quincey Jones was a beast of a producer, but I am not a fan of MJ's vocals.
let down by some awful tracks 3.5
I mean, it's a classic, right?
I know it's an iconic album, and yes, some indestructible smash hits are on this. And I know why it's on the list, and how culturally important and influential it was/is. Still. I give out stars based on how much I enjoyed this, and on that basis, it's a 3/5.
Refused to listen. What else can you say about Thriller? You know it inside out. It's pop perfection, soiled by what we now know. I spent my time instead seeking out some new music. Forward ever, backwards never. Gave it three stars. Back in the day it would have been five.
3.5
I don't hate it. There are some classics. But there are also some tracks that just don't hold up. It's better than Bad.
Iconic album but I'm not a Michael Jackson kinda guy
Tricky one to rate! I'm not a huge Michael Jackson fan (for either his music, or his character!) but the impact of this album and his music is undeniably wide reaching. I did find myself toe-tapping along to a few of these tracks (obviously not to The Girl is Mine - which is just fucking awful. Get in the bin Paul). I can see why this album is well loved by many, but I can't get past MJ being a creepy nonce. 4 for the album, minus 1 for being a disgusting filthy paedo, and rot in hell to all the people that took advantage of and abused Michael. Hurt people hurt people, but theres no excuse for abuse!
Undoubtedly some bangers on here and Thriller/Beat It/Billie Jean is hard to rival as a 1-2-3 punch but these ballads haven't aged well.
Good album, horrible person.
Almost had to bump it one more for the big hitters on the album but the rest of the album was just ok for me
How can one possibly review this album in 2024 without acknowledging the credible allegations of child abuse leveled against the artist. I didn’t even want to listen to it because I don’t want the estate to receive royalties. But I did and I have to say that as well as I thought I knew this album I think I was a little underwhelmed. It sounds very much of its time, i.e. a little dated. Not every song is great (“The Girl Is Mine”?). Also, this came up for me two days after Purple Rain by Prince which means it’s impossible not to compare the two albums and Thriller falls far short. In short, a GOOD album by a deeply flawed artist who needed a lot of help from a lot of people compared to the guy who could literally create a perfect musical monument with literally no help whatsoever.
Not my cup uf tea but the three big hits carry this to 3 stars. Letter grade would be C- because I really don't like the final three songs.
brilliant
Makes me awkwardly want to drink a Pepsi and fire up the Sega Genesis. Low tier guilty pleasure and with fresh ears feels like a template for Phil Collins. Wish it was more weird...in a good way.
Obviously "Billie Jean" and "Thriller" are some well known classics. Apart from that the album feels mediocre.
Ok
Meh. Love the hits but that’s about it
Some chum, some righteous rollickers. Nice job Michael
More of a hits collection than a proper album, only really like about half the songs so half the rating.
Less funny version of Weird Al.
Good title track and other singles.
Das beste von Michael
I've never liked Billie Jean and I've heard Thriller far too many times but it was ok to listen to this again. I suppose.
Wanted to like this more than I did
With Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, and Pretty Young Thing, I understand this album's place. But MJ's sound isn't really for me.
Standard Michael Jackson
Very talented musician; it is just hard to separate his behavior from his musicianship.
Lidt over halvdelen af de her sange er 100% all timere.
A few classic tracks. Billie Jean being my favourite. I few tracks sound very dated especially the Paul McCartney duet.
Imagine listening to this album without any of the now known scandals? It would have been a banger.
Terrific music - no doubt about that, but can't disguise the personal background
I haven’t listened to this album in years but I know it well. Very good listen, brought back lots of memories.
Really, it's over-rated. Some great songs on here but others like The Lady in my Life, Human Nature and especially The Girl is Mine are absolutely awful. 3.0 average per track.
I hadn’t heard this album in full since the eighties. Back then it was everywhere and you couldn’t avoid it. When I listen to it now it strikes me how dated it sounds. I know it’s one of the most important pop albums of all time but apart from the three BIG singles it sound like any other Quincy Jones production from 81-85.
The bops are the boppiest but the flops are the floppiest.
Singles sont bons, le reste bof
Best Song: Wanna Be Startin' Something. This is the only song where he feels like the King of pop. The production is tight, his delivery is full of iconic Michael-isms, and it's got an upbeat dance vibe throughout (especially the last 90 seconds). The African-inspired chant at the end of the song is the best part of the whole album. Worst Song: The Girl Is Mine. The combined forces of Michael Jackson can't make the word "doggone" cool. Would it have killed them to say goddamn? They both come off as dorks for this whole song. Overall: Not as good as I expected for an album that's so lauded. There are quite a few middling tracks here, and even some of the great ones are undercut by having some gimmicky aspect at the end. The album is also tonally all over the place, full of way more forgettable ballads than creative experiments like Thriller.
Changed pop music not necessarily for the better. Didn't age well. The hits are awesome, Beat It and Billie Jean especially. Important culturally as R & B has completely replaced Rock as the mainstream in pop music. Mostly cringey (especially in retrospect), and MJ's voice doesn't work well in most of the material.
It's probably a 2 for me, but it didn't overstay. It's welcome, and it was really cohesive as an album, so it's +1 for that.
siii 7.5/10
Quoi dire, c'est MJ. 7/10
Michael Jackson halt! Thriller ist das Album mit Thriller, Beat It und Billy Jean. Heute nicht mehr so reizvoll wie damals.
Some good few songs. The rest are average
Obviously heard before, at least half of the tracks or so. Re-listening now, I'm kinda coming around to the fact that it's just not quite my bag. The 80s synth bass is not doing it for me, and the very rhythm focused songs kinda lack in any big, hooky melodies. Most of the melody comes from the vocal delivery, but to tell the truth I've never been a huge fan of MJs voice. I did own the Bad CD way back when, which to my recollection had a sound I liked more. Now, it sounds like I'm totally shitting on this album which is not my intention since it's by all accounts an album with some really absolute classic tracks (hard to deny Beat It and Billie Jean). All in all, some solid stuff here that I'll listen to if it comes on the radio or whatever, but wouldn't seek out myself. (And Christ, that McCartney collab is rank. Knocks at the very least half a star of my rating)
Classic album from a giant pervert. Hard to hear in the same light as it used to have.
Good opening track and a strong core. The rest is meh. "The Girls is Mine" is bad enough to detract a star, but I will probably stick with a three star. I like it better than "Bad".
Some hits, some very mediocre songs.
Not aged well
Billie Jean är ju klockren. Beat it ok, resten inte så imponerande. Aldrig gillat thriller.
iconic. Just boring.
It's a great album. He's problematic. Music is really good. It's complicated. 3 stars.
The gems really shine on this album I just wish I was more into this style of pop. I can understand why people like it so much but the album feels a bit soft to me. Sorry Lil Mike.
It's alright 80s pop. very dated and not noteworthy in any respect other than mj being cultural icon and a very good singer.
59/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 Man, did this album ever rock my world when it came out. I was 10 years old at the time and if that version of me had rated this album, it would have had 5 stars. Today, things are a bit different. No, I'm not talking about MJ's penchant for kids; I can separate the art from the artist. What I'm talking about is an album that has its fair share of filler content. At the time, it wouldn't have bothered me. Today, it does. Beat It (best song by far, due in no small part to Eddie Van Halen's solo) Billie Jean (the one other reviewers will say is the best) Thriller PYT (as much as I separate the art from the artist, it's hard not to find this one a bit creepy, but y'know, it's okay if I ignore the lyrics) The Girl Is Mine (if it weren't for Paul McCartney's presence, this would fall under the filler songs) Those songs are varying degrees of interesting. The rest is filler. A little less than half (arguably) the album being filler isn't bad, by pop standards, but when people call this "the best album ever", I laugh. This does not belong with the likes of Dark Side of the Moon or of Led Zeppelin's... entire discography. Or Tool's "Big Four" albums, if this list hadn't snubbed the band. It's a good pop album, but the overwhelming majority of pop is garbage, so the bar isn't set very high.
I remember loving this album so much as a kid. It’s one of the few ones I had as a vinyl so would play it a ton. Coming back to it now and listening more closely, there’s actually more songs that I strongly dislike than those that I enjoy. The run of Thriller, Beat It, and Billie Jean is just as amazing as back then. But the greats are let down by some really questionable love songs like Baby Be Mine, The Girl Is Mine, and P.Y.T. Those songs are also well produced and Michael is a very talented singer but their lyrics and repetitiveness are enough to make me roll my eyes at times and actually become rather uncomfortable at others.
6, 5, 3
Excellent album. Everything about it is top notch, I just don't really enjoy pop from this era.
Got it on vinyl
Chi)l music for background
It's a pretty good album. MJs silky smooth voice carries the album. This album was the trendsetter in the sense that it has mixes elements of funk and older rnb music that will later become the hallmarks of almost all 80s pop albums that come after. The MJ classics in the middle of the album are still as enjoyable to listen to as when they released. All in all a solid album. -1 for the very obvious PLT though :/
Good album, lots of classics, coherent piece of work
1. Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ - catchy beat, fun, vocals!!!, HEE, the background vocals scared me 😹 right in my ear, quite long icl, MAMASAY MAMASAR MUMACUSA, endings a vibe!! 2. Baby Be Mine - these a very much disco vibes, okay vocals sang, i like this one, another long one, preferred beginning and middle to end 3. The Girl Is Mine (with Paul McCartney) okay groovy, slower, not big fan of this one, what in the audiobook is this, this one’s shorter but much too long for my liking 4. Thriller - !!!!!!!!!, already LOVE this one r u joking, long as hell tho (what’s new), CAUSE THIS IS THRILLER🕺🪩, king of pop for a reason 🗣️🗣️, i’ve never actually heard this bridge before but it slaps, loving this narrator 5. Beat It - another banger, that electric guitar tho 😮💨, okay guitar solo get it 6. Billie Jean - IS THIS ALBUM JUST MADE UP OF SOTY?????, by far my favourite so far, pretty sure this is on my playlist already, BUT THE KID IS NOT MY SON ✋ 7. Human Nature - stop why does this remind me of glee, urgh his voice is amazing, WHY WHY, he really managed to make this song sound like walking through a park or field, genius 8. P.Y.T - the amount of times i’ve heard the chorus of this song, the verses do not disappoint, okay what is this grunting and heavy breathing, bit off-putting, NANANANANANANANA 9. The Lady If My Life - a lot slower this one, those trumpets are sick, not a big fan of this tho, very interesting chord progressions or whatever it’s called, okay Michael get it, love those background vocals
Never been a Michael Jackson fan, but had a friend who was obsessed with him as a kid, which is a but strange thinking about it. I thought the video for thriller was amazing at the time, still is tbf. I also remember playing the Michael Jackson sega game with him too That Paul McCartney cameo on the girl is mine is so cheesy. Made me cringe. It's all just a bit too disco. I kinda get why people like it, but I'm never going to be a big fan Thriller is the best track here by far. Beat it is pretty iconic too. Argh....so is Billy Jean.... I feel I'm being generous with a 3, it isn't really my thing, but equally I think this is his most highly praised album so maybe not. 2.5 Just realised I talked about this friend in my last MJ review too, oh well
Full of grooves and attitudes. All the best songs came out as singles, the rest are alright. Best Song(s): Thriller, PYT Listen Again: It's Inevitable
Pure 80's sound magic ✨
Pretty much a classic.
- I like thriller, beat it, and Billie Jean, but tbh this sound overall isn’t for me - didn’t realize that Kanye sampled PYT in Good Life
3 stars with some standout tracks - I know this is an extremely hot take.
Good album except The Lady In My Life
puh... one of the big ones. Never listened to it completely. And I must say, apart from the big hits thriller, billie jean and beat it, the album is pretty... meh.
Not as good as expected rip
Many hits - Wanna Be Startin Somethin, Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, PYT The Girl is Mine - duet with Paul McCartney Beat It - EVH solo!
I really like a few songs but didn't really love anything after Off the Wall
-MICHAEL JACKSON???? what a week im having so far -starting off STRONG -have listened to one or two michael jackson songs but never a full album -VERY strong starting song -this song is with paulie mccartney and my last album was the beatles (love it) -i mean literally who doesn’t know thriller -this song is really the star of the album -i also know beat it but i don’t like it as much as thriller -lots of very popular singles on this album, like billie jean which i do like but not as much as THRILLER -his voice really is something special. forgot to mention that somehow -PYT!!!!!!! an iconic classic -im going to rate this a 3 because its a CLASSIC and theres a lot of good songs here but its not Really my taste
Demasiado hype.
1. ztarting zomething - 2 2. baby me mine - 1.5 3. the girl iz mine - 1 4. thriller - 4 5. beat it - 3 6. billi jean - 4 7. human nature - 1.5 8. pretty young thing - 1.5 9. the lady in my life - 1
https://youtu.be/QHi479xN_po?si=mvo2sRT_oQI10eTf Billie Jean has a legit shot at being the greatest pop song of all time. Also, Vincent Price's presence is always great. Aside from the core hits, though, the rest of this album has always left me kinda cold.
Ok
Obviously some great hits. Overall, just not quite for me.
Not as good as I remember
3* It is a classic album.
Top Nonce. Fun fact: I got suspended from school in Year 8 for mooning the audience every time 'Thriller' was sang during a lip syncing performance. Good times.
Quite an emotional roller coaster. After repeatedly getting called a vegetable, being scared out of mind, getting instructed to rub one out, and finally receiving a dissertation on human behavioral psychology, I felt overwhelmed, exhausted and strangely disoriented, probably much like that baby tiger that Michael used for the cover photo-shoot. Oh well, in the vain of so many lazy reviewers on this site; "I mean, it's MJ". 🐯🐯🐯
Yes what can I say. It is pop music. Good pop music. I was surprised that I had not heard a majority of the songs on this record. And that the ones previously unknown to em were good .
classic, but sounds pretty dated.
Familiar with the hits. Never listened all the way through!
2.5 beat it is too slow and i didnt like the less famous tracks apart from the first one. billie jean slaps though.
Very nostalgic for some reason o.o
It's got some bangers, but also some duds.
There are some absolute classics on here plus some filler. very conflicting album in an art vs artist way
There's a brief description of my taste in music. Well I want to buy my first album it was a choice between this album and Def Leppard pyromania. Def Leppard won but thriller was definitely a strong choice for second.
Am I am Jacksoner? No. Does Billie Jean, Beat It and Thriller make a pretty amazing set of lead-offs. Yes. Is The Girl Is Mine, along with Ebony and Ivory, a crime against music. Yes. Yes. Yes.
What can I say that hasn’t been said already. I enjoyed.
If you like Mike you'd love this album - if you think he's a bit of a weird nonce then you'd probably still like this album but to a lesser extent.
I prefer Off the Wall by a considerable margin but having such big singles in the same album is quite the accomplishment, I'll give it that. Too bad that corny duet with Paul McCartney kills the momentum otherwise that would have been a pop masterpiece.
It's OK. The bangers we all know are in the middle but the rest of the album is quite forgettable.
I don't think I've ever listened to this album fully. I've heard the songs here and there but I enjoyed hearing it all together.
Kokonaisuutena tasaisen hyvä, tai itse asiassa kiinnostavasti nousee keskellä hittitrion kohdalla kunnon jytäämiseksi. Jackson saa kyllä kasarin levottomuuden toimimaan, vaikka ei tää mun henk koht suosikki olekaan
Hyvää ja vetävästi laulettua mutta esteettisesti minua miellyttämätöntä poppia, PLUS levyn keskelle sisällytetty 4-5 tähden mini-EP. Billie Jean - puhdasta neroutta, ei muuta.
Pop genius 'n' paedo pervert.
3,5
Ok.
One of the most popular albums by an alleged pedophile in the entire world.
I mostly liked the singles. There was at least some part of every song I liked a little. But there was also some part or every song I didn’t like. Mostly just too much 80s sound.
Some great songs. Some awful ballads.
-Great production - Influencial - Cohesion lacking - not my favourite in terms of relistening
It was pretty good. Michael Jackson isn’t my favorite artist but it was still good listening. 7/10
3 This album is like hanging out with super extrovert person as an introvert one. Tiresome, mostly annoying, but with beautiful moments(Beat It & Billie Jean) as well. I get that Michael is King Of The Pop and everything started from him, but to be honest, most of the Pop is crap, so for me that does not mean a lot. So, extrovert reference - this album is "Too much". For me everything is over-tried - over-pop-ed, overrhythmic, overmusical, overenergetic, overromantic and so on. Well i do love those hits I already mentioned, but others are not my cup of tea. Anyway, I was going to give it 2.5, but looks like i have to chose from 2 or 3, so 3 i guess.
Maybe the most ubiquitous album of all time, I found this one hard to really judge. Like a lot of posters here, I've known a lot of these songs since my childhood and have varying views of them today. The 1-2 punch of Beat It and Billie Jean are still wonderful and top songs of the era, Wanna Be Startin Somethin is still a great kick off and rocks, and I even kind of like Human Nature and PYT as great come-downs from the middle of the album. Now for the bad, Thriller as a song really doesn't hold up for me, The Girl is Mine brings together the worst of both MJ and McCartney in one shmaltzy package, and the other album tracks are kind of forgettable. And yes, the baggage with MJ probably makes me less accepting of this album's obvious faults.
Found it strangely underwhelming.
Mikke Jaakkosen parhaat kappaleet. Ehdottomasti parempi kuin Bad
Ansi langt síðan ég hlustaði á MJ because of reasons. Þessi plata er ágæt, en mér hefur alltaf þótt hæpið í kringum hana vera of dramatískt.
Classic album but not one I can get into. His vocals are amazing, and I’m sure as a new release it was groundbreaking, but being overplayed in society hasn’t helped it’s longevity
Some of the best songs ever recorded by a nonce
Bästa låt: Beat It.
While I don’t know if I would class this as ‘best-selling album of all-time” in my own book, this is still a strong LP fill of fun instrumentals and great songwriting. The rising/falling action from ballads at the beginning/end to the monstrous three-song run in the middle keeps things flowing well, and the songs in question (“Thriller,” “Beat It,” and “Billie Jean”) are so rich and evocative across the board it’s easy to see why they’ve become Jackson’s biggest hits.
I'm sure I've heard all of Thriller before, but a couple of the tracks were new to me. I have seen all of the videos from this album. There is so much pop-culture weight to this album. Vincent Price's voice over on "Thriller", a member of the Beatles on "The Girl Is Mine", and "Beat It" (my favorite track) and "Billie Jean". I had forgotten about "Human Nature" but apparently all of those lyrics are stuck in my head. My opinion of this album, like Michael Jackson in general, is split. I would put up with listening to some of these tracks again, and I might even choose to play "Beat It" of my own choice. There are many tracks I would skip. When I first heard music from Thriller I was confused by the songs with lyrics speaking to girls as a love interest - they still seem so weird. "Billie Jean" and "The Girl is Mine" both creeped me out, but not in the same way. "The Lady in My Life" was my least favorite track. Jackson's rhythms also change otherwise normal phrases into some sort of foreign language for me. Musically this album is definitely from the 80s, with strong ties back to the 70s. This sounds like the follow up to Jackson's Off The Wall. Even with the pop-culture weight, at best the album as a whole comes out as "okay, I guess".
A little overrated. The production is great, but it feels like every song brings nothing new to the project. The hits are great but that’s about it. Favorite Tracks Thriller The Lady In My Life Least Favorite Tracks P.Y.T Wanna Be Startin’ Something
Separate the art from the artist... I know virtually all the songs on this but don't remember ever listening to it. It's good, obviously, and Billie Jean is remarkable, but I find it difficult to enjoy because I can't really do what I suggested in the first sentence
classic album
"You're a vegetable"
Don´t like songs like PYT with some TLC for a baby, girl or lady or whoever..... But can´t "beat" a song like Billy Jean.
- Never listened to this in full before, but obviously heard most of the songs before - Preferred it to Off the Wall - Some absolute classics on this - Knocking off 1* because of how awful The Girl is Mine is, especially the spoken word bit at the end - Fav songs: Wanna be Startin' Somethin', Billie Jean, Human Nature
Some bangers but not sure the whole album held together that well.
Classic.
I've never actually listened to this album front to back even though I've heard everything on it. First album of my 1001 listening project. OK, the spoken word bridge on The Girl is Mine is pretty rough.
Meh
Feel like I’m committing sin giving it 3 stars but besides the bangers, the rest of tracks sucked lol
If he wasn’t a raging paedo it would be 4 stars
I'm not a fan of MJ really but you can't deny that Thriller/Beat It/Billie Jean is a run of songs that's hard to beat. Thriller especially is amazing.
The singles are amazing, but the rest of the album isn’t quite as good as Off the Wall.
A good album
Michael Jackson.... child molester. Every time he's talking about Baby be Mine or Human Nature or Pretty Little Thing, I cannot not think that he's talking about all the little boys. In an attempt to separate the evil from the music.... An album with songs like Thriller, Beat It, and Billie Jean back to back to back, is purely amazing.
3.5 Fun fact: I previously reviewed this album on my unaired, short-lived series "Boozy Listening". I gave it 3.5 then (after two strong cocktails), and I'm gonna stand by that now. This album starts off really strong - Wanna Be Startin' Something is not only a great opener, but probably one of my favorite MJ songs. That spirit continues on Baby Be Mine, loses me a little bit on Girl is Mine, and then we get to the mega hits... and man I was gonna talk shit, but I underestimated how much I was going to enjoy listening to Thriller, despite having it heard it many, many times before. Then Beat It is always great, though Billie Jean didn't phase me much. I feel like that song in particular I've heard enough in my lifetime to the point where it simply harmlessly "exists" now. Maybe that's just bias despite the enormous popularity of the song, but hell it's a subjective review. My review of the album would probably be higher if we stopped there, but unfortunately the last three tracks really start to lose me. It just feels like the "high" of the album is over to me after Billie Jean and I'm afterglowing until The Lady in My Life's long conclusion. I see why this album is so highly regarded, and while I hold respect for it myself, and just isn't quite a "top album" for me. Favorite songs: Wanna Be Startin' Something, Thriller, Beat It
I've never been a big fan of Michael's music, regardless of the kid-diddling accusations. I can't deny this is an impressive album though. Listening to it now I appreciate some of the songs that didn't get quite as much airplay as the monster hits - songs like PYT and Human Nature. Strangely, even though I love Paul McCartney, my least favorite song on the album is their duet. 3 stars.
Maybe it's because of personal bias because I grew up with Bad and Dangerous, but Thriller never did it for me. It was before my time. On the following albums there's more of MJ and less and less of Quincy Jones. I prefer it when Michael is at the helm. Sure, the three songs in the middle are absolute monsters plus I've always had a soft spot for Human Nature. But everything else on the album doesn't live up to the big 3 (Thriller, Beat it, Billie Jean).
I have only heard songs from this album but never the full album I agree with everyone else that thriller - beat it - billie jean is an amazing three track run Enjoyed this one but a lot of tracks were just meh 6/10
Its michael jackson, king of pop, so the album was good but just not really my cup of tea. Maybe at some point in the future i’ll come back ans love every song but as of right now the hits on the album are all i really need or want
Fine.
I get that this album is iconic and influential but also the intro to PYT almost made me throw up
The singles are still as undeniable as they were in the 80s. The rest of the album doesn't hold up as well.
Great album, from a legend. Some not heard before, but still a good album.
E da innafor å høyra på Michael Jackson lenger? Dobbel MJ idag, da blir litt for mykje Når eg va liten fekk eg ikkje lov av mamma te å sjå musikkvideoen te thriller hehe
Trying to put the woerd pedo man to a side, some certified bangers, some absolutely dull shite.
used to love this, now hard to listen to given the weirdness and perversion following. Far better than Gary Gliiter in a musical sense, but rating adjusted accordingly for similar behaviors
p496. 1982. 3 stars THE soundtrack of a million 80s nightclubs worldwide. It's packed with hits, and Quincey Jones is on top form. Having said that, there is filler - Baby Be Mine, The Girl Is Mine (hang your head in shame Macca) - and the 80's synths haven't dated well (PYT). Jackson sounds like he never really cracked puberty, and those shrill whoops get annoying real soon. It's not as good as Off The Wall. "You're a vegetable (you're a vegetable)/Still they hate you (still they hate you)"
***
My re-appraisal of Thriller: Bang average album brought up by Beat It and Billie Jean. Thriller is just background noise to an expensive video, and The Girl is Mine is one of the worst songs ever made. 3/5
Good record. Memories.
It has character, but it also is monotone
it's good, loses a star for a collab with McCartney Thriller itself still the standout
I was ready to give this album 5 stars. I thought like Rumours that it's mega sales meant that its quality was beyond the regular pop fare. But it turns out there are some really shifty songs on here. I listened to Thriller and after being mostly unimpressed decided to listen to Off the Wall. Off the Wall is a much better album. Thriller gets 3.5 🌟
Not really a Jackson fan, but this is a classic of course.

With the calibre of the hits, and the fact that it's the greatest selling album of all time, it would be hard to give it less than a 4, UNLESS some of the other songs were REALLY REALLY bad. Some of the ballads would make George Michael blush. My favorite moment was when Sir Paul & MJ, in perfect harmony, deliver the line, "Dawg Gone, The Girl is Mine.
Disco/Dance is not for me. MJ is great but just not for me.
Was never the biggest fan even before the big cancel button. 3 seems to little 4 too much.
This album is really on the cusp; the first of the massive 80s block-busters, it showed how big an album could be int eh video-enabled new music world. But it sounds still quiet disco. The sound is super-polished, but not as ground-breaking as the presentation. All the single,s all the videos, and MJ's massive charisma. Is it all a bit safe (perhaps)? Well, that's how you sell a bazillion albums. Some songs (Baby Be Mine, The Lady In My life, the Girl is Mine) are middle-of-the-road, inoffensive pablum. But the stronger singles (Billie Jean, beat and Thriller) have a slight edge that makes them stick above the most. Quincy Jones' production is slick, funky, and has aged really well. The Girl is Mine (duet with Paul McCartney) is, frankly, horrible. The spoken word in the middle 8 is... just not credible. This album and MJ himself set a precedent for how big a star could be. Not to anyone's benefit; record companies chasing bigger and bigger (and more irrelevant) mega-hits, and had MJ chasing a dragon of success that led him to some VERY unfortunate places. This is the last time that I find MJ to be a relatable human, and his descent into celebrity freak begins in earnest. In retrospect, PYT is a bit creepy. Clearly, a deeply damaged person, the evidence of this damage starts to become unavoidable, and reflects in his song-writing, which becomes less and less relatable. And the joy seems to disappear from his work. Do I actually ever listen to this album? No, I don't, but think it is required listening in the history of music.
I thought this was better than it was… the singles clearly slap… but the ballads are just a bit dull. Soz wacko!
-A lot of hits and bangers on this album -Solid album all the way through and I can see why it was such an influential album in its time -Love how pop songs in the 80's still had guitar solos -Feels nostalgic -No real complaints about this album other than some of the talking bits sound so cheesy -Favourite songs are Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, P.Y.T.
Again, I just have never been all that onboard with Michael Jackson. More enjoyable than the last album on here, but can't push my hand past 3 stars. I'm sure it deserves more but I just don't give a fuck.
Some absolute belters but also dips to boredom in other parts
The Girl Is Mine: Ballatona mantecamaroni invecchiata decisamente male. The Lady In My Life: Ballatona classica stile "The Girl Is Mine" ma secondo me più riuscita, sarà pure che c'ha un po' un vibe jazz a tratti.
Singles are awesome, rest is fairly meh.
Some great songs, some pretty forgettable, but overall an enjoyable album
Yeah a classic obvs
Na
I mean what can you say. This album was just hit after hit after hit. Like you have to respect the space this album and its songs take up in not only the American, but the world's music landscape. Michael seems like the only artist just about everyone is willing to separate the art from the artist with little hesitation. People will dance to these songs no matter what club or bar they come on at. You don't even have to be a MJ fan, it's just ingrained in American's music education. That being said, I've never been a huge fan of MJ's and I found the songs I was unfamiliar with to be just ok. I'm rating this one on my personal preference, but I understand that culturally and influentially it probably should be higher.
3 stars.
Classics are great, but the other tracks don't do it for me.
Bringing back the MEMORIES. I didn't know that Paul McCartney sang with him on one song here. I only remember "Wanna Be Starting Something", "Thriller", "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" -- all the other songs did not jog ANY memories, but those were SERIOUS throw backs. All in all, I don't think this is something amazing, though. 5-6 good songs, 3 of them GREAT, but the filler is pretty terrible.
I can see why this is one of the best selling albums ever, because it is really solid and the production is incredible. However, it’s just not my thing. Favorite tracks: “Baby Be Mine,” “Thriller,” and “Billie Jean”
I listened to a playlist called “triller” instead of this album at first because my co pilot coming home from school forgot the h. Thanks Cullen
A fine pop album, just not quite my style.
Some good tunes.
This doesn’t even feel like an album because the hits just transcend the rest of the album. I’m taking a star away cause MJ is a bad dude and maybe I’m adding one because of the outro on The Girl Is Mine, I don’t know 🤷🏻♂️
PYT be having me tapping my foot and shaking my head yo. Needs more spoken word Macca.
Full of hits, but I still don’t really care about it.
THRILLAAAAHHH. This album was very fun for the most part, but then it sort of dropped off after Billie Jean, and the rest of the second side weren't very memorable. Also, THAT BALLAD WITH PAUL.
The hits are hits. Some of the lyrics are super gross. I get why this was and is popular.
Took me a minute to finally listen, and I admit I skipped Thriller lmao... and Beat it. We all been knew those songs are bangers and I'm tired of em now OKAY. But any who, I did not know how many iconic jams were on this one album. Neat.
Is it possible to fault Michael? This may be my fav album of his.
Separate the art from the artist. Didn't work.
I have been wrestling with Michael Jackson as a societal figure for some time now. Not necessarily as a musician (there's a lot of things worth arguing about but his voice isn't one of them) but how people seem to talk about him. He is both a God and an infantalized victim of abuse, a savior of children and somebody who never had any interaction with them, a punchline and an irreverent musical hero. And it's so goddamn tiresome. I enjoy albums that
I know. I know. But it’s never really landed with me. I grew up being told this was a classic and I waited to understand why, revisiting it each time, but no.
I’m barely just old enough to remember the Thriller music video being aired on prime time TV on Halloween. When I look this up, it seems that this wasn’t when it initially appeared, so maybe I am misrembering (this is totally possible) or it speaks to the cultural impact that this song had even after its release. So as an album deserving to be on here, sure. Times have changed and I’m not sure anything could have as broad a reach as this now, but it’s hard to overemphasize how absolutely massive this was at the time. And listening to it now, it sounds good. Quincy Jones’ production is slick and sharp; there are some big name cameos, and Michael Jackson himself was a great singer. Alas, it’s hard to listen to this knowing that Michael Jackson was a pedophile, especially when he’s singing about young girls. This gets two stars, but should probably get less.
Even if I was pro-pedophile, I'd rate this poorly. I never got the whole MJ thing. I recognize songs that were good, and why people responded to the.(Billie Jean, and Beat It) despite my distaste for the style. But overall, this was nit enjoyable.
I like the mamase mamasa mamacoosa of the first song Wasn't a huge fan overall
Ok
I guess “Baby me mine” is pleasant. Half the songs on this album are so overused, I don’t really feel anything when listening to it. I don’t necessarily feel that way on every overused classic song so I guess that isn’t just the problem. Paul and Micheal’s conversation is weird.
Man, Quincy Jones and Eddie Van Halen were great. No idea how they squeezed so many singles out of this, even the title track seems to drag without the video to prop it up. The second half just goes on and on and feels creepier and creepier.
Music for pedophiles
I tried to like it, I really did. Track two makes it virtually impossible to carry on.
Ok. But not my thing at all.
Respect the art but Michael Jackson is not really for me. Do love Billie Jean though!
this album just reminds me of being woken up hungover in highschool because my little sisters rented the video every weekend
Most painfully mid album I’ve ever had to subject my ears to. It was so mid I had to google why Michael Jackson is so mid. That being said Billie Jean and the last song were pretty good. Overall, I’d give THIS one a 2.8/5! 😐
pocos tenas destacables
Will I be executed if I say this bored me?
