Reviews (page 12 of 14)

overall a good album , although a bit repetetive for my taste .

This felt less dated than "Bad", to my ear - I guess because of "Bad"'s use of synths? A bunch of these tunes are era-defining monsters. "PYT" was pretty cringe, though. Fave track - has to be "Thriller", really. "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" are pretty epic too.

Really wanna give it a 5 but it's not something I'd add to my record collection. Thriller/Beat It/Billie Jean is a GOAT three in a row. The Girl Is Mine gave me AIDS. Worst thing he's ever done and I've seen Leaving Neverland.

I'd forgotten how many good tunes were on this album. Enough to push it very close to 5 star territory. The fact is, though, that I never was a huge Michael Jackson fan. This one lands at 4 stars for me.

Great 80s pop. Some songs I absolutely love, but also quite a few that do nothing for me.

Thriller

Classic!

This is it. This is THE pop album. Quincy Jones on production, and Michael Jackson riding high off the success of Off the Wall, coming together for an album of just hits. Well, 7 out of 9 were hits, but that still makes for a juggernaut of an album. It's funky, fresh, and full of energy that makes you want to get up and DANCE. MJ was the biggest music artist in the world. Even long after his death, I reckon people will still call him "The King of Pop". This album is the reason why he's the king. The only thing keeping it from a 5 is some songs don't stack up to others (I'm looking at you, The Lady In My Life). Otherwise this is the quintessential pop album. You either know, or got to know.

The good pop-album with positive tracks

I loved thais album. it was fun something i could dance to and a little familiar. 10/10

Did not realize what a fire album this was! So much more than just Thriller some of MJ’s top songs were in here as well great listen

Solid.

Lots of classics - most of the songs I'm familiar with are from this album. The ones on it that I'm NOT familiar with are either cheesy, slow jams that just don't do it for me (the /doggone girl is mine!/ lmao) or up-tempo..also love songs. Though the beats found there are much more infectious than the slow jamz. All that being said, the songs I do know are just too fucking good to give this album less than a 4.

Thriller is brilliant, Michael nails it and sets the benchmark for Rnb/pop music for decades to come. The guitar solo on Beat It is orgasmic but the track ‘The Girl is Mine and it’s Paul McCartney feature is a travesty.

Great songs superbly delivered, expertly produced and enlivened by splendid cameos.

Michael también es revolucionario

Lol why is Paul McCartney on this album, go away

Esplendido.

Some songs are longer than I realized. Still mostly fun; it's Michael Jackson afterall

It's Michael Jackson, what else is there to say? Some songs are really really really good (my favorite here easily being Billie Jean) but some other tracks (like the first one) are pretty boring. The best songs are still good enough to merit a 4 for the whole album though.

Damn what a banger album.

Only 4 to say I liked it less than bad. Otherwise fairly faultless just tired of most of the songs except Billie jean still bangs

Classic MJ 4.0

This tunes might be overplayed but it is pretty much perfect pop. BT: Wanna Be Startin' Something, Beat It, Billie Jean

Well produced and mixed.. it is MJ. Contains 3 absolute hits! Rest of the album let's it down with forgetable songs. Rated 4.2

Similar to others, the hits are HITS but the other songs were a little lackluster. Luckily more hits than misses. 4 overall

Some fantastic unparalleled tunes on this record. Also some stuff that I find mediocre. When the album popped up I just assumed it would be getting a 5, but after a couple of listens I can’t make that happen, no matter how good Thriller, Billie Jean, and Beat It are. I’m not really interested in hearing the rest of this album. So three songs that rate near 10 coupled with more meh equals a 4.

"You're a vegetable (you're a vegetable) You're a vegetable (you're a vegetable) Still they hate you (still they hate you) You're a vegetable (you're a vegetable) You're just a buffet (you're just a buffet) You're a vegetable (you're a vegetable) They eat off of you (they eat off of you) You're a vegetable" (Wanna be startin' somethin') Otro disco que también es MUCHÍSIMO más cursi de lo que recordaba.

Michael Jackson... music's original bad dude. Actually some sick album tracks on this. And the guitar solo from 'Beat It' is so damn metal.

Too big to fail.

Knackfrische Produktion eines HiFi Überalbums. Volle Punktzahl? Fast.

Just can’t see past the fiddlin’ aspect so it’s a little blemished

Re-listened for the generator. Thriller's always a great time. Starts off hype with Wanna Be Startin' Somethin, explodes with the elite duo of Thriller and Beat It followed strongly by Billie Jean, closed well with P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing), gloriously sampled by my boy Kanye. 8/10

Well arranged songs, good melodies and rhythms. Makes me want to dance! 4/5.

can't believe this was the first time I actually heard it from start to finish, very solid mid part, kinda silly at times but a classic allright

It's Thriller.

This one belongs to my childhood, I had the vinyl, used to listen to it a lot, but then grew distant with pop music in general as a teenager. I'm giving it four stars, a rating I only reserve to really important albums in my life or ones that I hadn't listened to before and that honestly blew me away, because I understand the overall importance/significance of this album in modern music history. Plus, it's got its fair share of funky grooves. I might eventually re-incorporate it into my playlists.

Pop classic. Billie Jean is a perfect pop song. Slightly prefer Off the Wall as a whole. 8/10

good songs, bad guy

Classic after classic. His best

Not a big fan of the intro. But half way through it has some real head bangers like The Girl Is Mine, Thriller, Beat It, and Billie Jean. Then the album ends on a really mellow tone with The Lady In My Life. Not a bad album but the intro kills it for me.

what to do with mj these days? can’t say i know. the great songs hold up; the not-great ones don’t

Classic!

Great album, catchy as

Esse é hype

classique

Excellent stuff

plays like a greatest hits collection, making it full of highs that are somewhat disjointedly sequenced.

Can’t help but dance

kannte ich schon

Crepe singer

If you wanna be starting somethin

That just wasn't as good as I remember. The singles were obviously unparalleled works of godlike genius, but the other half was schmaltzy and forgettable (as evidenced by me having forgotten it).

Good album but personally I prefer his faster ultempo songs and prefer his Bad Album

Lots of great songs, sooo 80s only Beat it has a riff that could allow it to age well.

Obviously brilliant but some tracks lack bunch now. And it isn’t Off The Wall.

Never listened much to Michael Jackson, but I quite enjoyed most of the songs.

I mean, it's a classic.

Classic.

You can guess which three songs I enjoyed.

It feels sacrilegious to give this album a 4, when so many songs are not only imprinted in the human mind but even human DNA. However, Christ, can I not stand "The Girl is Mine". I haven't heard it in a while, so I almost came around to it before that talking part in the middle. Christ. Still a damn near flawless record from one of pop culture's most troublesome idols. Favorite tracks: "P.Y.T.", "Baby Be Mine", "Beat It", "Billie Jean"

classic

Yeah there's a pretty good reason this is agreed upon as one of the best albums of all time, at the very least one of the best pop albums. It's crazy that no one has managed to top it in almost 40 years. Going by modern pop, that's not gonna happen any time soon lol. The hits deserve to be classics, the rest is p good too. I think apart from the big songs on it I prefer Off The Wall just cause it's got more of that 70s disco feel, but it's still getting a 5/5.

This is such a stellar album. I feel very comfortable giving it a high rating, but I feel uncomfortable giving it a perfect score. I know that this man is capable of incredibly great production and vocals so when I hear a song like "the girl is mine" feat. Paul McCartney I'm a little disappointed that it's not that good. I feel like this album is really held up by it's heavy hitters and so seeing mediocre songs on the tracklist feels worse than an if this was a slightly above average album with some mediocre songs, if that makes sense. Either way I would feel very confident in a 9/10 score, you should absolutely listen to this before you die and it's cultural impact is so incredibly vast. That being said I cannot ethically and in good faith give this album a 9/10. If the allegations against Michael Jackson are disproved or proven I will update my rating accordingly. I wish that I could find credible evidence to swing my opinion either way but I haven't seen any. This review leaves me questioning whether we can or should enjoy art made by predators. 5/10

The world's best selling record of all time, and for a reason. The performances are top notch, production by Quincy Jones is impeccable, and the playlist is chocked full of classics. Despite all it has going for it, Michael Jackson never captivated me as a musician. He's deserving of the title of "greatest entertainer of all time", but his vocals and song subject matters never really resonated with me. On top of that, the many allegations of child abuse over the years cast a long shadow over this album and his legacy.

i have this on cassette

The highs are phenomenal, but boy are there some real stinkers on this. And somehow the best moment on this is for Eddie Van Halen

Obviously the King of pop knew what he was doing. The album singles sound closer to a movie score than and album. The rest of the songs fall somewhat flat. To witness this in realtime must have been a treat.

Undeniably catchy.

If it wasn't for the three consecutive songs of thriller, bad, and Billie Jean (which is incredibly amazing and warrants five stars by itself) this entire album would be a one or a two. I never realized how dull and saccharin the remainder of the album is

An all time albumn with 3 big hits back to back. Not my jam personally but still stellar music.

We listening to the same album? Now im not of the opinion that he was a nonce but just a fucking weirdo, but this album has three bangers and 5 middling to below average songs... first time ive listened to the album in full. Didn't miss much.

This is not my thing, it's hard to listen knowing now that Jackson was at least deeply creepy, and the Paul McCartney duet made me cringe so hard I nearly imploded. But you can see why it was so successful. The music is a perfect fit for that shiny, precise early eighties production.

honestly i've been dreading getting to a michael jackson album since we started this thing. musically it's at least a 4, but given i am not ever going to listen to this guy's music of my own volition, for consistency with my other reviews it should be a 2. averaging this out to a 3 and moving on.....

From the opening synthesizers and bass, the sound is really full. Heeeheee. What a mix of funk, pop, and singing. Fun vibes all around.

Solid, but so overplayed I can’t sit through the whole thing.

Die 3 in der Mitte hart carrien. Weit aus besser als bad aber nicht so gut wie off the wall 3/5

The girl is mine

I told you I am not a michael jackson guy

Some classic songs here. Not a fan.

Mixed feelings about this one. Two excellent songs (Thriller and Billie Jean) and a lot of cringy meh. +1 for amazing dancing, -1 for being a gross person.

Wanna be startin somethin a banger but maybe 2 mins too long. I don't think I'd ever listened to that whole song. So many amazing songs and then utter shit like "human nature"

At the time, this got a lot of airplay in the house I grew up in, and listening to this now is probably the first time I've heard the album, in full in well over 40 years! Undoubtedly the biggest superstar during my teenage years, but I'm not really that interested today. Billie Jean, Beat It and Thriller are huge, the duet with Macca? not so great! Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ ★★★☆☆ (6/10) Total reviewed : 324 Already owned : 74 Purchased : 15 To buy : 4 Nope : 231

there's actually enough cheese here that maybe it wasn't that good after all?

This album is arguably the perfect evolution from his prior project, with more interesting instrumentals and writing and a really good vocal performance. However, aside from the obvious highlights on the album ( Thriller, Billie Jean, Beat It), I can’t say I enjoy this album as consistently as I did Off the Wall. Honestly, I don’t what they were thinking naming a song PYT.

My lad is really into Michael Jackson for some reason? Thriller is good, but I'm not really that bothered.

Great tracks but also a whole load of filler

Amazing!! I don't think there's a three song run in an album any better than Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean. The only reason I took a star off is because it's not a personal love of mine and a couple of the other tracks aren't as strong. But the high points are amazing

It is what it is! Classic Jackson

A couple really good songs, but the rest is 'meh.

Pretty much the biggest album of all time but I’ve always preferred Off The Wall more. 7/10

I was ten when this came out - I remember buying it on cassette because literally everyone else seemed to own a copy. Although I've always found the title track itself a bit annoying, I enjoyed the rest of it and it still stands up pretty well today. I like that polished, souly, pop sound, and he did have a unique voice. The allegations around his private life hang very heavily though, making listening to Michael Jackson records an awkward, conflicting experience these days. I can still grit my teeth and enjoy Off the Wall, but when I do, I keep the volume down and shut the windows. Thriller is the last of his records I liked but it wouldn't occur to me to put it on these days - it was nice to listen again today, but it probably won't happen again.

It's Thriller, who hasn't heard this before?

I feel like I would have liked this better if I lived in the michael jackson era. ICONIC and GOOD. Walkability: 4/10

Lots of love songs for an album named 'Thriller', those were the best part aka the latter half of the album. Intro song is kind of weak but I appreciate the big hits and best tracks aren't played first.

Mixed bag of weird soft 80’s and a handful of absolute bangers

Not my kind of music at all. And when he sings about girls with that squeaky voice I just dont believe him

Day846 - i appreciate his talent and the songs are iconic but i never enjoyed listening to this album. i feel like human nature has been the lowkey star of this album for awhile now

Only gets better as it goes. Starts pretty hokey 80s, to be honest (sorry, Paul McCartney) but the middle third is the stuff of legend. You can see Michael metabolizing learned sounds (funk, R&B, 80s pop, etc.) and beginning to distill him into his own sound.

It’s a classic obviously. I don’t see myself choosing to listen to most of the songs without some kind of external prompt to do so but I enjoyed my listen.

Very uneven. I liked "Billie Jean", "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" and some parts of "Beat It". Other parts are too kitsch.

I really dislike the song”Thriller,” despite my love of Vincent Price. “Wanna Be Startin’ Something,” “Billie Jean,” and “PYT” are more to my taste. That being the case, Michael Jackson sound is too light for me.

He’s no prince

I'm kind of embarrassed by the fact that this site is what made me listen to the whole album for the first time in my life, still I fear it is not really my thing. My picks:baby be mine, beat it and Billie jean (ofc),P.Y.T.

Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean carry this record, but the rest of the songs are just plain weird or stupid. The Girl is Mine will haunt me - I've not heard something so idiotic in years.

Fav- the girl is mine 3/5

The three track run is legendary, the rest is fine... Never been a huge MJ fan. Boring cover art.

Quite surprised about how up and down the quality is here, given the long-standing reputation it has. The McCartney feature is a particular highlight for its strangeness. Some of the best disco pop ever written but also some duds.

Full of Jackson classics - this is definitely a top tier album from him. He is a nonce though...

5 for musicality, 1 for personality.

Really fun. He's great here. So many bangers from one album

I liked it … but I can’t give it more than 3 … because … you know … stuff 🙈

classic...

A banger of a Quincy Jones record - though it has some odd wee dude all over it 🫣

This was so great at the time Clean sound, excellent production, Michael's silky voice, and a strong list of songs (even if I generally stop listening after Billie Jean) But it feels now like this album is all played out for me - heard it too many times, that I have to switch stations whenever MJ comes on the radio It had its moment, and what a huge moment it was Then the stuff with the kids and animals started And we noticed you also skipped Live Aid!

unfortunately, this album, despite it's incredible highs has always fallen a bit flat for me... it is sometimes a bit to elevator music adjacent for me (the girl is mine and human nature being one the worst examples of this imo) my fav track is P.Y.T. which feels spiritually like an Off The Wall track (the FAR superior album IMO) anyways.. its totally fine and more iconic than anything methinks

Rätt stort tapp från off the wall.

such a throwback to when i was a kid

Beside the hits, really mediocre

top 3 - Beat It, Billie Jean, Thriller. Never actually listened to a full album by him, which I only realised now… Anyways, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would, a little underwhelming to me I guess. I think I’m just not a big fan of his vocals. It definitely belongs on this list considering his impact and I can see why people love this so much. I don’t think I would listen to this album in full again but I liked some songs. A little unsure what to rate this.

I rate it a 3.5 for the three banger in the middle of the album

Billie Jean is a good song

Finally heard the whole album, and somehow I already knew all but two songs. Most of it is decent enough but “The Girl Is Mine” is genuinely awful and sticks out in all the wrong ways. Have to mark it down for that.

The song 'Thriller' is pretty dumb and long and overplayed but I've mostly learned to coexist with it. The McCartney duet is a poor choice. This isn’t a great album, but ‘Human Nature’ is just kind of a personal favorite. So I guess a three even though he gives me the creeps.

We all listened to MJ in junior school, and he has had some good songs and albums over the years, but I would not call myself a fan. Maybe more an appreciator of his music. Thriller is a good album, but not something I feel have to have. I probably have not listened to this album since the mid 80s, so it has been an interesting listen. I felt it started off a bit weak, even with the "hit" wanna be starting something. Then of course we have the hit trifecta..Thriller, Beat it and Billie Jean. Three great songs and i get to enjoy popcorn meme in its full glory. honestly, the last 2 songs are okay, but nothing outstanding. The album is firmly held together with the 4 hits, Bille Jean is by a long margin the standout song of the album. I was not completely wowed by this album. a perfect album should have no "no skip" parts. this did. I am not sure it warrants 4 stars, but at the same time it is above the average 3. Only 3 notable songs at the end of the day for me, so 3.5 stars

I’m definitely in the minority here, but I prefer Off the Wall over this album. Off the Wall, in my opinion, had more energy and more catchy songs in it. Thriller is in no way bad, and has this incredible stretch of bangers in the middle with Thriller, Beat It, and Billie Jean, but half of the album is a bit too laid back and not that exciting for me. Great production, great vocals, but could be more lively. 7/10

It's okay pop, but the titular track is so well known that it makes complete sense this album is on the list. I think Billie Jean and Beat It are the better songs, but Thriller is fun—better as a music video. Outside of these three tracks, I really don't even remember what I just heard.

It is a classic album with big hits. I do have to appreciate the album for what it is and was during the time. But outside of the known mega hits the songs were mostly really boring and overall the album is not for my musical tastes. Good try mr. Jackson.

I knew most of these tracks, and there's some undeniably good ones on here. However, a whole album of MJ gets quite samey. The vocals don't really massively differ across tracks, he really just does one thing. The one exception to this is "The Lady In My Life" where it's much softer and sung (well, OK, barring the breakdown where he reverts to form). (Predictable) Highlights: - "Thriller" - this title track will always be iconic - "Billie Jean" - also iconic, love the bass funk - "Beat It" - still better than any covers I don't want to deny the obvious impact and influence that this album had, but I also wouldn't seek out any of the lesser known album tracks again. Also, context matters and listening to MJ nowadays makes me uncomfortable.

Michael apparently wanted to make this an album where every song is a hit. Unfortunately, like many artists who probably also thought this, I think he failed. Because he was trying to make every song a hit, the album lacks cohesion and feels more like a compilation of good songs rather than an hour long experience. Only 3-4 good songs that aren't particularly to my taste of music. Calling it the greatest album when it disregards an entire aspect of the format is insane. 3 - It's utterly disrespectful that he ripped off "Eat it" by Weird Al Yankovic

fave son: thriller the girls is mine w/ elton jon was terrible and really drops this album down

Handful of bangers and a lot of slow forgettable ones you skip

Slow songs are boring. Spoken word bits are cringey. PYT is off the scale cringe to the point of feeling uncomfortable listening to it. The middle three songs are bangers, along with first track.

im not really a big fan of michael jackson but it was not bas, most of the songs were in chill vibe and it was easy to listen to

This album definitely feels like 80's ofc it is released in 80's. however, there is nothing that memorable for me maybe not my cup of tea.

songs are a little long but i dont hate it 5/10

Classic singles, not super consistent overall but of course a cultural classic anyway

Yeah I guess. People talk about it as one of the great albums of all time and yet it has the girl is mine on. The production here has something distinctly pop about it. There are some little cues or something that make it feel like it's mainstream pop - my instincts reject that sometimes and I struggled a little bit with this today. It's obviously a great record, but I didn't really have a particularly fun time listening through

I like off the wall better

Beautiful album. A pop album. Rating: 3/5

I am of course familiar with this album. It came out when I was in high school and it was all over the radio and you couldn't escape it - songs from this were played at stores, parties, school dances etc. and on regular rotation on MTV. I was even watching the Motown 25 TV special live, when Michael first did the famous moonwalk dance move. And I used to watch the Jackson 5 cartoon when I was a kid. I'll admit, at the time I thought it was SO completely overplayed that I never felt the need to actually get the album or go back and spend any time listening to it, even after streaming was a thing and everything in the world was available to me. I was also more of a rock kid - but I did like a bunch of Motown and contemporary artists of his (at the time) like Prince. Twas fun actually listening to this front to back for the first time after so long. 4 Good tracks: Wanna Be Startin' Somthin', Beat It, Billy Jean, PYT (Pretty Young Thing) 1 Ok track: Thriller 4 Forgettable tracks: Baby Be Mine, The Girl is Mine, Human Nature, The Lady in My Life Eddie Van Halen's guitar solo definitely lifted "Beat It" up to a whole other level. I'm a huge Beatles fan but the collaboration with Paul McCartney ("The Girl is Mine") here is really one of the worst tracks on this one. Liked songs on Spotify: 4/9 Rating: 3/5

The production is great- sounds so crisp and big and 80's. Really liked 'Baby be Mine' and 'PYT', they feel closer to that disco/funk sound (but more synthy) that I like in some of the earlier MJ stuff. As for the hits- 'Billie Jean' and 'Wanna be Startin' Somethin' are cool, but I'm not really into 'Thriller' itself. I imagine this will happen quite a bit during the whole listening project- but it's really hard to be objective about some tracks when they are so ubiquitous and you've heard them so many times. Actively think 'Beat It' is just not very good, the guitar is annoying (dunno if theres any Van Halen to come on this project- but not looking forward to it if so) and I don't like the vocal melody at all. Would have given this album 3 stars but unfortunately will have to deduct 2 stars due to the guys overzealous approach to kids

6/10 - Favorite song: PYT

you wanna be startin’ somethin’ you got to be startin’ somethin’

I'm an old fart. I didn't like this music when it was released because there was better music to explore. What I have realized later in life is that this doesn't mean that it was bad music, in fact this is pretty great pop music. Still not my thing in the sense that I can envision myself putting the album on, whatever my mood, but I can I can still respect and even enjoy some of the tracks.. . This album defined a generation, so like it or love it, it certainly has a place here.

The second biggest selling album of all time. And it’s not as good as the previous one or the next one. But it’s pretty good. I mean what can you say. You also have to balance it against the serious allegations he faced. I’m not convinced he is guilty. But it still casts a pall. But is it good. I like the songs. Thriller is more performative than song. Billie Jean is so,etching else again. The subtler, softer songs is where it really lands. And the fink of PYT. Should it be here? Yes Is it as good as the numbers and its iconic standing suggests? No. Off the wall remains Michael at his best.

Classic pop album, knew most of the songs. Only 9 tracks

1. wanna be startin’ somethin’ - not my favourite - would put on in background, wouldn’t actively listen 2. baby be mine - love love love - such a vibe ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ thriller & beat it classics ofccc stopped listening after :(

Beat it and Billie Jean great. Rest not a fan of

Massive hit and something for everyone on this album.

- I think the most popular songs are the best, I didn’t really find any hidden gems - I will say I enjoyed the girl is mine until Paul started ab libing - I don’t think i’ve ever got the Micheal Jackson craze?? Yet to have it proven to me Favourite: Thriller

TIMELESS and so many bangers. Was already familiar with almost all of these tracks but I really enjoyed listening to The Lady in My Life for the first (?) time Favourite: Beat it

Э. Billie Jean.

Hundreds of millions of people can't be wrong. Discuss.

Thriller, beat it and Billie Jean are bops, the rest is mid honestly.

hhmmm? eh? listened to it a day after he was exposed in the epstein files, so if that wasn't the case i probably woulda liked it more

skipped the hits…enjoyed the vibe of the album

There is a reason it’s often called Filler. The singles are awesome though, especially Billy Jean.

Loads of iconic songs, second half is better than the first. I prefer ‘Bad’, but Michael’s vocals are brilliant in this album. Fav song is ‘Billie Jean’.

I mean the middle of this album Thriller->Billie Jean is amazing. The rest of the album doesn't live up to those 3 tracks.

some of these are banging and I hadn't heard them???

it was okay just not my style of music

I can appreciate that this is probably as good as Michael Jackson gets, but it's just not for me.

The slickest of the slick

The great songs (Beat It, Billie Jean, Wanna Be Starting..) are outnumbered by some truly bad songs so I can't go higher than 3.

Enjoyed a few that I hadn't heard in a long time, but again not the biggest MJ fan

it's a classic for a reason but not really my thing

I'm not a natural fan of MJ and this album was never going to be my jam, but it can't be disputed as one of the best pop albums ever made. It's got a few absolutely iconic pop tracks that are perfectly produced and sharp as a tack in the usual MJ style. Jackson is at his best with the high energy, upbeat tracks and I find his rendition of the more intimate songs to be unconvincing. Even with drafting in Paul McCartney, "The Girl Is Mine" comes across as sickly sweet, juvenile and the album would be better off without it. Great album but not to my taste.

Beyond the monster hits, so many of these tracks are locked-in-the-80s dated. And so many of the lyrics are cringy and childish. Obviously the groove is what matters. But there’s a lot of slag on here. “The Girl is Mine” is such a disaster. Still. The hits are undeniable and legendary. Can’t really knock it down. One star deduction for the pedophilia.

The more I listen to MJ albums the more it reinforces my view of him as a great singles artist. The middle three tracks are absolute classics which are incredibly creative, bringing influences from outside the pop sphere (Vincent Price monologue, Eddie Van Halen solo). Most of the other tracks fall into whiny ballads or weak pop. The girl is mine is bordering on criminal. That dialogue section with Paul McCartney will haunt my nightmares.

Conzert 1994

Wow, I expected to like the album more. I didn't catch the vibe of the best-selling album of all time. I don't want to relisten to the album except for the songs I liked. I didn't expect the other songs, besides the hits, to be so ordinary and unmemorable. They just seem boring to me. And still, it's not bad, but I expected more. 3/5 —————————————— Liked: — Beat It — Billie Jean — The Lady in My Life

I don't really get Thriller or Michael Jackson in the '80s generally. It is a well produced (by Quincy Jones) pop album with some good songs and some poor ones. I like "Thriller" itself, "Billie Jean" is ok, although Jackson's often parodied percussive vocal mannerisms wear fairly quickly, "Beat It" obviously had the novelty of an Eddie Van Halen guitar solo; but Prince was knocking it out of the park at this time, and played his own guitar as well as almost anyone. "The Girl Is Mine" is one of the worst things Paul McCartney has ever leant his talents to, including the Frog Chorus... It's not that I hate Michael Jackson's music, I love the Jackson 5 and the later The Jacksons albums have some great songs, but I don't see the appeal of this record and certainly don't understand its reputation as one of the best of all time.

3/5 a lot of variety of sounds. The best are the ones with high energy

The best selling album of all time! I'm personally not a big fan of his music, its fine to me. That being said, the fact that "Thriller" "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" are all off the same album is crazy. But I think those 3 mega hits kinda blind everyone to the the fact that the rest of this album is merely fine? "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" is pretty good, but everything else was very forgettable to me. Except "The Girl Is Mine (with Paul McCartney)" which is actively bad and weird. Overall, it just averages out to merely fine for me. (Maybe an extra half point for giving us some great Weird Al songs)

It's good if you like his classic hits

This is one of the most famous albums ever made, and it’s easy to hear why. The production is sleek and carefully crafted, built for maximum impact, with every beat and hook polished to perfection. But that same polish is also why it doesn’t entirely land for me as a front-to-back listen. It’s so big, so carefully constructed, that some of the spontaneity gets lost along the way. The hits are undeniable. “Billie Jean” and “Beat It” still sound sharp, and the title track is iconic for a reason. They’re massive, finely tuned pop songs that helped define an entire era. But outside of those huge moments, some of the other tracks feel like filler or simply don’t have the same spark. It’s a record that peaks incredibly high, but not consistently. Thriller is a cultural monolith, and its influence is impossible to ignore. As a listening experience, though, it’s more uneven than its reputation suggests. When it works, it really works, but when it doesn’t, it coasts on polish rather than heart.

Pretty good, some nice classic songs, but also some filler.

Okay, this was... underwhleming. Having the incredible status this man and this album have, I expected way more out of this project. I'll start by the positive points. The production in this album is fantastic. Everything sounds superb and incredibly smooth. I prefered a lot more the sound of this record more than the one of the album Bad, as that one feels kind of loud and artificial due to the over use of the effects on the instruments, which was very popular in the 80's music. Another big point of the LP, and the most obvious one, is that Michael's voice is divine, and the most remarked aspect of the whole. So, into the negative:. I think that most of the ideas of the album are dull. In comparition with the big three tracks, all the other ones are super weak and don't have anything as interesting to offer. They sound good, but they don't impact me in any shape or form. So, maybe a disappointment, but the record is still great thanks to its excellent execution, and I can at least say that it isn't bad, regardless of me not feeling like returning to it.

An unbeatable run of singles but there is a fair amount of filler (and that Paul McCartney collab...)

if this is your bag, then this is gonna be monumental - the best to ever do it. unfortunately, this is not my bag

Some good pop hits Beat it is fantastic love the riff. Thriller is timeless and catchy but there is some drivel on here too.

The big three are great. The more upbeat songs are nice head bobbers. I didn't really care for the slow stuff.

i don’t really like michael jackson but you can’t deny the hits on this are pretty good, the in between songs however, not so much

Thriller is a cultural landmark, blending pop, funk, and R&B into some of the most recognizable songs in music history. While its influence is undeniable and tracks like “Billie Jean” remain iconic, not every moment feels equally compelling today. Still, its legacy is immense.

RIP you sweaty sex case.

I mean great album, not my exact type of music but undeniably great

Controversial opinion but I don't like Michael Jackson. There are some very good songs on here but I don't like a few. I can see why people love it but Im just not a fan. Will give it another listen.

Has some serious bangers. A really great album. Like objectively I see how the songs are just amazing. Might not return on my own to this but nonetheless nothing to complain about.

I was "thrilled" by the lack of harmonica! -1 star for the ranch

I like The Lady in My Life.. and I guess Thriller is iconic? But its just not fantastic.

Amazing production, and some cool tracks here and there (especially the opener - critical to have a good pop opener). Amazing that the Thriller single became such a hit, with its odd horror-pop theme.

A ⭐⭐⭐ only because I loved it as a kid

Full of hits, not really my sort of thing though

Some massive hits, some cheesy filler, and a very problematic man.

I heard this in 1983 and that was plenty. It's fine.

Does anyone need my opinion on this album? I still have the vinyl I bought as a grade schooler and enjoy Beat It, Billie Jean, and Human Nature.

3/5 - I'm sure I needed to hear this at some point in my life, but I don't need to hear it anymore. The hits were huge, but as a whole album, it's overrated. Deserves a place in pop culture history and on this list, but not in my listening rotation.

I think I prefer Off the Wall. This album for sure has high highs, but the lows are pretty low to me. There's no song thats so bad i wanted to skip it, there's just a bunch I don't care for.

It wasn't as great as I was expecting it to be, still a decent album.

Decent album, nice to put on a background when chilling

Classic album, the songs still hold up to this day. Too bad he diddled kids. Damn. That one knocks down a couple stars.

6/10 quite overrated although its all classics

Apart from the three hits on this album, the rest was just painful to listen to.

I don't love it, but it's pretty undeniably great, even if it feels a little formulaic at times. Love the synth work. Never realized that Thriller, Beat It, and Billy Jean were back to back. PYT might be my favorite if it didn't kind of creep me out

Didn't really enjoyed the album, except for the three most famous songs: Thriller, Billie Jean, and Beat It. It's a more RnB/Romantic album than the previous one I listened to, so not really my vibes.

I never really understood the hype about Michael Jackson... this was okay, but not something I really enjoyed.

a worthwhile listen and fun! nostalgic too. haven't listened to him explicitly ever, let alone in a long time.

I've never sat down and listened to the whole thing before, there's never been a need with most of it being released as singles. I like some of it.

In all these years, I’ve never been interested in this album save for a few moments. Vincent Price is cool on Thriller, and Eddie’s guitar solo is badass. McCartney’s contribution is an absolute stinker of a song. Now that I’ve done this, please don’t make me listen to Thriller anymore.

I love the funky sounds of Billie Jean and I understand the significance of this album but it just didn't catch my attention and I didn't vibe with it despite all the funk and disco and pop sounds. Also I thought that pop music must be catchy and this one (except Beat It and Billie Jean) is not

It's a fun album with a decade-defining sound based on my experience with GTA Vice City radio. It's weighted heavily towards its singles, with the only true essential tracks being the back-to-back trio of Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean. These admittedly make for a terrific run, but the rest is forgettable (but still highly listenable).

Was always a great album good music. But like so many the musician went off the rails, and that alone degrades the music.

All the hits, good fun of an album. For me a product of its singles and intentionally made in that way. As far as pop goes it's a shining star

Off the wall is better

Maybe I am reading too much into this but for being songs about love, Michael seems to have quite an adverserial stance on love. (Baby be mine, the girl is mine) The girls are to be conquered, not to win her affection, but from another man. He creeps around or scares you with the idea of someone out there so you better have that thrill with him. (Thriller) And when the loving is over with don't you confront him with the consequences. (Billie Jean). And then PYT comes on. And how was this man of sound mind? Ok it is groovy and produced to a tee but except for thriller and beat it, none of this ages well.

"The doggone girl is mine"? Other than that very weird lyric, this is Michael Jackson at his peak. Every other song is a well-known classic. Thriller is my favourite track here and the whole album is easy to listen to although it's generally not for me. Three stars for moderate enjoyment.

Three tremendous songs that defined an icon but the rest is filler IMHO - 3

not as good as off the wall

Even a hater like me can't criticize the three song run of Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean right in the middle of this album. Best three song stretch of all time? Who knows, definitely not me. Anyway, I really struggled with the rest of the album. I'm happy to hear these songs in shopping malls but I won't voluntarily put them on at home.

some classics (thriller, beat it) and absolute stinkers (PYT, the girl is mine). and those stinkers smell even worse in light of his later "activities".

There’s a couple of good songs here for me, but the hype had me prepared for so much more than this. Not my favorite.

The three tracks--you know the ones--are all certified hits. But the rest of the album is filled with soft muzak and I realized I just don't care for MJ's voice. Expected to like it more than this.

A few great hits, the rest is more or less junk. 3 stars

I know this is a classic in many people’s eyes, but really, apart from the three tracks in the middle it’s pretty average pop music. Legitimately, not the five star album a lot of people will claim it to be.

Crazy to think this is first listen. I’ve heard the big tracks, but a lot I had not. Its got the 80s over produced stuff. Too much synth for me. Human nature is kinda cool. Toto song really. Tenderoni is pretty weird from PYT. Wow 70 million copies. That like one in 4 people buying it in the us.

for some reason I always assumed this was a concept album so it was pretty disappointing

Thriller has 4 or 5 of the greatest pop songs of all time packed into a tight 42 minute package. However, some of the (synth-heavy) production sounds dates and overall it seems to fall short as a cohesive “album”.

Yes, apart from the Paul McCartney debacle, this album still sounds pretty good, I didn't think it was going to hold up, but some real classic tracks.

Classic album reallly good grooves. Not really my favorite but hard to turn off when it comes on.

The Girl is Mine with McCartney has an arse-clenchingly cheesy interlude-argument between themselves 🤮.

Michael Jackson. 3 reten. FAV: Billy jean, Beat it

An interesting listen - I had always assumed his biggest songs were the ones parodied by Weird Al, so it was definitely weird seeing that Billie Jean is his most played song on spotify. A good song though. 2.5/5 stars.

The opening track is quite good, but the chorus is too "nagging", in a way. You can't really fault the excellent trio of songs in the middle, but I'm not a fan of the other half of the album. I like Bad far more than this one.

Better than I remembered and poppy, but not great and not really for me.

Distinctly underwhelmed by this album. I had been expecting so much more given the hype. Clearly a few of the singles are massive songs and I can understand how this album was lauded over when it came out. It’s not necessarily that the songs have aged badly, or MJ’s reputation, but something didn’t really click for me and I didn’t feel the hype.

point5.

3/5 after child molester taxes

Look, yes it’s MJ, The King of Pop, it has three incredibly famous tracks that are super catchy (although Chris Cornell’s cover of “Billie Jean” is far superior to the original and I will die on that hill), it is incredibly clean and polished pop/funk, and yes it is the most successful album of all time. But it just doesn’t do it for me. There’s some catchy stuff of here but the album as a whole, just not for me. Never adored MJ, probably never will. I can respect how he changed music but he’s just not my jam.

You could not get away from hearing this album when it was released. So many of his singles got huge air time from MTV. 80’s pop music-I won’t ever seek it out to listen but still know most of lyrics

Not a fan of Michael Jackson at all. His singles are great! But I can't shake the thought of his pedophilia. Also I haven't heard a b-side of his that's anywhere a good as his singles. This album did have 4 of his biggest hits on it so I see why people consider it a great album, I rather listen to real funk and dance music than this 80s pop

Thriller, Beat it, Billie Jean.. 🔥🔥🔥 Rest.. 🥱

bro... wanna be starting something- 5 baby be mine- its got a little groove i gotta admit. 5 the girl is mine- 4 thriller- it is what it is. 5 beat it- yeah. 5 billie jean- oh god. the vocal stim is taking over. maybe this shit is good... 6 human nature- 4 pretty young thing- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWOYtkap6ec its okay 5 the lady in my life- boring as fuck. 3 or 4

Iako je izlizan, volim poslušati dosta stvari ovdje i apsolutno obožavam bass i kljavice. 3/5, 6.5/10

Classic.

MJ isn’t quite my favorite but I do have to admire the back to back bangers on this, it really is incredible how he could just pump out pop hits like nothing.

The whole thing is really good all the way through (some of it is cheesy but in a low-key good way) - it's capped in that it's both overplayed and it's structured weirdly, none of the songs flow that well together and it's obviously backloaded in a way that is a bit off-putting. So I am torn on this but I think it's closer to a 3-star album unfortunately.

This is, by a huge margin, the biggest album in history. It sold 10 million over the next closest release, and 20 million over the next closest record, as in, not a greatest hits album. It sold over 60% more copies than any of its competitors. Clearly, this record matters. But, that is an artifact of its era. The 80's saw a rise in global reach for American culture, and especially the record industry. It was also just before the internet facilitated the fragmentation of media, of which music would be hit first. The MP3 meant that listening to (or downloading) a song over the internet was viable, even though dial-up. Anyway, my point is, I don' think anything can be this big in the foreseeable future. This is the peak of the monoculture. As for the music, it's solid. I'm not a Jackson fan, but it has a bright feeling to it and a refreshingly robust range for the time and genre, at least in its subject matter. I probably won't come back to it, but I liked it.

I am not a big Michael Jackson fan, so half of this album was new to me. I am still not a fan really :P XD

Classic album.

Knew I had to listen to this album some day. Glad this list finally gave me a reason to get off my fat ass and listen to this thing as I certainly wasn't going to do it on my own. I know all of the big hits, unsurprisingly. Yet, outside of the Thriller music video I've never actually sat down and given these songs a proper listen. In some respects I'm going into this album blind. It's good. The songwriting is top notch on the big hits with tons of hooks and quirks in the instrumentation that make it impossible for me not to bob along to the music. I'm more mixed on the non-headliners like "Human Nature" and "The Lady in My Life", though these are ultimately minor quibbles when the leading acts are of a consistently high quality. I had no idea that Paul McCartney was on this album, which is funny. It's amusing to imagine someone 16 years older than MJ going after his love interest. Michael Jackson is a talented vocalist, though his appeal varies with each track. There are moments where his voice is the core appeal of the song like on "Billie Jean" and there are others where I am indifferent to his performances, like on "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'". He's ultimately suave enough to get by without a hitch, as I don't think there are any bad songs on this album. I'm interested in seeing why this album is in the book. "Most commercially successful album of all time" is a good enough qualifier, though I'm still curious. Apparently the editor (John Lewis) thinks this album is worse than "Off the Wall", which is surprising. Can't comment on the merit of that opinion. The title track is "ridiculously camp" and "drains the life out of the record at the end of side one". Damn, Johnny hates this thing. This is the only entry I've read that has expressed any negativity towards the included album. Maybe he's trying to temper expectations with all that has been said about this album, though he's not doing a good job. He constantly refers to MJ as "Jacko", which I don't think is a common shorthand. "Wanna Be Starting Something" plagiarised "Soul Makossa" by Manu Dibango. "Beat It" and "Human Nature" are good. "Billie Jean" is good. "Meticulously crafted" and without "a single note out of place". He came back in the second half, but this was a really shitty write-up, not gonna lie. I'd estimate that there are around 200 albums on the list that deserve a proper, irreverent write-up and this was one of them. What were they thinking?????? What a shitload of fuck....

Great music, but not my thing. Still, I'll keep the LP for the occasional spin ⭐⭐⭐1/2

J - 3/5 Best Track - "Billie Jean" Worst Track - "The Girl Is Mine" F - 2/5 Best Track - "Thriller"

The hits on this album still hit. But why is there a song where Paul McCartney and Michael fight over a girl? Ew. Eddie's guitar solo in Beat It is still so great.

Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' 3.6 Baby Be Mine 3.3 The Girl Is Mine 2.8 Thriller 3.7 Beat It 4 Billie Jean 4 Human Nature 3 P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) 3.1 The Lady in My Life 3 Score: 3.388888889

He is an interesting vocalist that makes interesting choices with his instrument. As always a lot of the music here sounds like bad karaoke backing music. The Girl is Mine with Paul McCartney is insanity inducing. Might be the worst song ever made. I'll give this a 3, but be aware all 3 of the stars belong to Vincent Price.

Not much for me to add to the discussion here. There’s the obvious mega-hits and then there’s the rest of this. Rating: 3.5

4 absolute bangers on this LP, hence 3/5

Fine. Lots of filler bar the singles

As one of the, if not THE best selling album of all time, I found it a little lackluster. Sure it has some huge huge hits on it, and they're great if course. A few of the fillers just didn't hit as hard as I'd have liked.

Amazing voice, great album. Pop, Soul, Funk and Synth-pop. Loved the LM1 drum machine! 4/5 Favourite track: Baby Be Mine

A classic, but not really my thing.

Hard to separate the art from the artist when the best song on the album is “Pretty Young Thing”. 100/5 stars for Quincy Jones though, this might just be the best sounding album of all time

Overrated and maybe becoming a bit dated. Still, the amount of succesful hitsingles is impressive.
