Best-selling album with ephemeral hits including the title track, "Billie Jean", and "Beat It" Jackson's post-disco pop acclaimed as maybe the best pop record of all time. Hard to separate the tracks from their pervasiveness but it is enjoyable and an easy, catchy listen.

solid record by the king of pop. although a musical star already, this album launched him into the stratosphere and made him a household name. the album contained nine songs, of which seven(!) were singles. impressive. in fact, this album is the top selling album of all time. highlights: “wanna be startin’ somethin’ “ “billie jean” “PYT (pretty young thing)”

Full of classics, many of which still hold up.

Excellent album, but definitely an abuser. Can we really still enjoy his work knowing he took advantage of so many children?

It's a good album, some great songs on it. Not sure I enjoyed the front to back listen that much, Thriller itself feels slightly out of place maybe? Or maybe all the songs I know particularly well do. Paul McCartney song is weird

It's a weird position. I can see everything thats great about this album, even if it's difficult to see past Jackson himself. But it still sounds dated in places. Dated, but so well done.

While I do think that Thriller, Beat it, and Billie Jean is one of the best trio of consecutive pop songs in history, to me the rest of the album just isn’t consistent enough to get to a 5. Still very very good. Sorry!

Some bangers

There were a lot of hits on this album. Thriller, Beat It, PYT, Billie Jean. Hard to not rate this high.

I was never over the moon about this album, and I still was not thrilled (yep...) this time around (independent of what feelings I may have about MJ). Two, or maybe three, outstanding singles, but the rest I can take or leave...and a couple of those I may actually prefer to leave... But the two or three had me absolutely unable to sit still!

Stone cold classic

No one my age could possibly listen to this album objectively. However taking a fresh look at the cover how did I not notice he is wearing something that zippers? And sideburns?!? I'm not clear what he's laying next to, a nice tiled shower? Still, I can't get enough of the 80's halo and the paisley pocket square. OK so Michael and Paul fighting over a woman like dogs with a bone isn't great. And no, blood never rhymed with neighborhood. Nonetheless. It's Thriller. Beat It. Billie Jean. Maximum iconic. The moonwalk! Minus a star for all that is to come. I can't bring myself to go any lower than that.

Not a big MJ fan, and really not a fan of 80s pop with all its excessive indulgences. But, this is pretty good. Hard not to groove along. The main problem I have with it, is a lack of emotional connection. The intention of the album was to create an album with each track being as good as the main single, which it probably achieves. However, as a result it feels a little mechanical, creating tracks to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. As much as it doesn't sit well with my biases and opinions on the artist, it absolutely belongs on the list, its influence is undeniable, and so it has to get at least 4, pretty close to 5. An album to play at a Halloween party, not the strongest atmosphere for a whole album, but it works. 07/11/22

A strong album that any pop music lover should enjoy. Michael sings excellently but some of the sounds do date the production. Good.

89/100: The album generator saw my review cutting down pop as a genre yesterday and gave me the King of Pop’s best album as a test of my integrity. I guess I fail, well technically I don’t. To call Michael Jackson’s music “pop” is to try to capture the smell of a rose by painting it. Calling “Thriller” a “pop” album strips it of all its nuance and beauty. This album is disco, it’s funk, it’s rock, it’s soul. It’s all of those things before it’s pop, unless you’re simply defining the pop genre as “popular” music, in which case this is definitely that. Admittedly, I have never listened to “Thriller” in its entirety, least of all in one continuous sitting. This is one of those albums that demands to be listened to this way. There’s simply no other way to appreciate this album to the fullest without hearing “Thriller,” “Beat It,” and “Billie Jean” back to back to back. These are arguably three of the best songs of their decade. Not only are they all on the same album, they’re consecutively tracked. This is a bold decision from Michael Jackson, one that would be hard to pull of if the rest of the album fell flat—and even the best of songs can fall flat juxtaposed with those three absolute bangers. But this album skirts that issue. “The Girl is Mine,” a beautiful song prominently featuring none other than Paul McCartney, casually and calmly prepares you for the musical awakening that awaits you in the following three songs (obviously the “Thriller” to “Billie Jean” sequence). The rest of the songs on the album don’t back down either. “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” gets you bobbing your head, maybe even moving your hips. “Baby Be Mine” grabs you by the hand, twirls you around, and transports you to a dance floor—of course equipped with a disco ball and bright lights. Reeling from the end of “Billie Jean,” “Human Nature” settles you down; puts you at ease; starts a warm, calming fire in your soul. “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” stokes the fire started by “Human Nature” until it’s burning with passion in your heart. Finally, “The Lady in My Life” rocks you back to Earth, aptly ending your journey through this album. A beautiful album.

Half great songs half meh songs

This album became the best-selling album in the history of the music. There are really 3 great Hits on it. But the rest is mediocre. (7/10) FT: Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean

Lots of great stuff on this album, but there are a few forgettable tracks. And then there's "P.Y.T." (more on that later...) "Beat It" was a song I had not hear din a while, but then my kid wanted us to play "Beat It" in the car ALL THE TIME when we'd drive to daycare. That was like... 5 years ago? So I kind of got back in to the mindframe of not wanting to hear the song again. Even with Eddie Van Halen in it. "Wanna Be Startin' Something" is a great opener to the album. So... "P.Y.T.' I have mixed feelings about this song. The whole high-pitched thing is really annoying. The whole bridge works well, but the chipmunk bit is just... ugh. The three non-hits are just ... forgettable to me. But the other ones are pretty strong to me. So on the strength of those, I am giving it a 4.

I have been in no rush to listen to Michael Jackson's music recently, but it's undeniable that this album has some great songs.

A classic album with great songs throughout. Not his best album, imo, but definitely one of his better. The videos for Billie Jean, Beat It and Thriller are all time greats. Favorites, Billie Jean, Wanna be starting something and Thriller. Interesting side note, the beginning of Hella Good, by No doubt, is the same riff for Billie Jean

Like every other person on the planet, I’ve heard most of the tunes on this album. Despite thinking I knew what to expect walking in I was still impressed by the quality of this record. Wanna Be Startin Something really set the tone and Baby Be Mine was an excellent follow up. I swear I’ve heard that beat sampled in a million other tunes and that little robotic synth is oh so good - this one got me dancing in the chair but there was a very noticeable BPM shift around 3:30 that should have been ironed out. Thriller > Beat It > Billie Jean has to be one of the gnarliest triple threats out there! Of the three Beat It is my favorite, that intro is delicious. The Girl is Mine is a groovy beat but the voice over and basically the entire subject of the song has aged horribly. This tune, Human Nature, and The Lady in my Life were a cut below everything else. Hot take: This is a pretty damn good pop album. The 1-2-3 punch of "Thriller", "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" has to be one of the best runs on an album of all time. There isn't much I could say about these songs that hasn't already been said better a million times before; just that they absolutely deserve the timeless popularity and cultural significance they have attained. "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" is an equally amazing opener, and I'm honestly a bit surprised it didn't reach that same level of acclaim. However, while those tracks may be some of the best pop songs ever produced, for an album to receive a perfect rating from me, every song needs to be at least memorable... and that unfortunately is not the case here. While "Human Nature" and "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" are perfectly enjoyable, "Baby Be Mine" is a bit boring. Meanwhile, slower songs "The Girl Is Mine" and "The Lady in My Life" just haven't aged very well to my ears, which seems to be the case for many slower songs that I have encountered from the 80s.. it's just not my style. Is "Thriller" one of the best pop albums of all time? Without a doubt. Does it deserve the acclaim? Absolutely. Is it a perfect listen from start to finish? La colaboración con McCartney es más bien mala y siento que tiene un par de baladas de relleno que si bien no estorban tampoco suman mucho que digamos. Quizá por el gran éxito de la columna vertebral del disco las demás quedan muy atrás y se siente como un disco un tanto desbalanceado. 4.5 que tristemente tengo que bajar a 4 porque no me voló la cabeza.

4, some of this is gold and other parts are throwaway

Some fabulous tracks here. Hard to believe that he crammed so many into one album. Amazingly even the non ‘hits’ are good. Baby be mine is a highlight. Seriously good stuff.

This is solid. It's a classic and grovy.

The iconic one, because of all the fantastic hits that are classics today It is a a landmark pop album alright, however moving slightly away from the older RnB and soul infused MJ albums, I personally like better. In retrospect it also comes out a bit overproduced (as many soft rock/ power pop/ RnB albums of the 80’s). So for me not the top MJ album as it is to many. Prefer the previous ones.

A good album, a great album even, but one of the best ever? Ehh... seems like a 4/5 to me. There's the huge hits like "Beat It", "Billie Jean" and the title track, and then there's songs that are just kind of there (not bad, but not quite memorable and overshadowed by the huge hits) like "Human Nature" and "The Lady In My Life". Also isn't Paul McCartney like 30 years older than MJ? Why are they fighting for the same girl? I'm sure nobody has made that observation before.

Great pop album

Wow, was this all the way back in 1982? The way it was still so prevalent in the late 80s, I would've guessed later. Yes, of course, this album was and is absolutely massive -- best selling album of all time, the accompanying videos impact on MTV (again, only 1982; still early days of music videos) -- and it was everywhere. I was still mostly into rock, hard rock, etc., all through the 80s, so I didn't actively pay attention to this album at the time, but, as noted, nearly impossible to avoid. Listening to the full album today, I hear quite a few tracks I genuinely enjoy even after all this time. The "big three" -- Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean (dang, that bassline in Billie Jean, so infectious!) -- are to me really catchy and fun, with some real musicianship underneath. I saw the documentary 'This Is It' -- was supposed to be a documentary of Michael Jackson's Summer 2009 concerts, then was recut to deal with his demise -- and seeing in that film how musically talented Michael really was. I don't consider myself a devoted fan or anything, but when his songs worked, they really worked.

Listening to Billie Jean, thriller and beat it back to back is an amazing trio. The album is still strong though does has some syrupy ballad songs that don’t hold up. He was a creep but still had a great album.

I was 11 when this album came out and folks, I cannot stress enough how massive it was at the time. These songs were on radio constantly and the videos in steady circulation on MTV. You were kind of forced to have an opinion on Thriller whether you were into it or not. But the adulation for Michael Jackson here was mostly well-deserved. It was fresh and different for the time and set a high bar for Jackson himself that he never really surpassed. It's been a while since I've heard this all the way through and I wasn't sure how I would end up rating it. Overall, the album has held up pretty well. Quincy Jones’ production is obviously great with bright, catchy songs throughout that are just plain fun to listen to. Jackson is in exceptional voice. He kicks it off in full energy with the awesome "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'." That's a cool song because it's kind of a bridge between Off the Wall Michael and Thriller Michael. Similarly, "Baby Be Mine" has a certain "Rock with You" vibe to it. Further into the album Jackson ventures into newer territory, to spectacular effect. I suppose you had to be there, but "Billie Jean" was really something special and different. People lost their minds when that song came on, it was so cool (not to mention the great video). Similarly, "Beat It" is really different from what people expected of Jackson, with a solo from Eddie Van Halen that seemed so out of the blue, but was pretty perfect. I will say this, you would be hard pressed to find a bigger Paul McCartney fan than me, but "The Girl is Mine" is not a good song. It was a big deal at the time because, come on, Michael and Paul? WOWWW. But real talk, that song is dumb. There is this schmaltzy quality that exists in a lot of Jackson's music that appears on Thriller as well, in the McCartney song, as well as on pretty much all the more ballad-y stuff. Those songs hold up far less well than the songs that built for dancing. You know what, I said basically the same thing when I reviewed Off the Wall. What's there to say about this? It's an almost perfect pop album.

I think this might have been the first album I ever owned. I had it on cassette, and if I remember correctly, I got it for Christmas from my Mom. As a child of the 80s this was completely omnipresent and I was definitely a big fan. He has an amazing voice and the production is incredibly dynamic. An exciting ride with all kinds of unexpected twists and turns in its layers and details. There is so much to love here but I feel like the album is unfortunately sort of mortally wounded by the inclusion of "The girl is mine." If you removed that one song, this would be 5 stars for me, but that song is so cloying it's almost nauseating.

Listen. This may be one of the top pop albums of all time. There's no disputing that. In terms of personal enjoyment, the first half of the album doesn't do much for me. Billie Jean, Beat It, Thriller are of course straight 5*. Some of the rest are just okay for me. I personally do not love listening to MJ, but I get it.

Finally we get the mirror album to Off the Wall. I think those are his two best? I might light off the wall better because there aren't as many hits on this one but also some of these songs like PYT are a little questionable knowing the singer. Either way, Thriller, Beat It, and Billie Jean are all classics and alone make this a great album.

i had this on vinyl - got it in like '83 for my birthday or christmas or something - and i had 100% forgotten just how many of the tracks on it were so utterly forgettable. i did have the entire vincent price monologue committed to memory, and totally loved billy jean and beat it (didn't realize till WAY later that that was eddie on guitar!), but like...the girl is mine? i'm sure i didn't care for it at the time, because it made zero lasting impression. sir paul will always be sir paul, but i'd put money on there being an entire generation of us who collectively feel wings was a terrible mistake - his collabs of the early 80s (like this one) just ended up feeling at the time like a weird plea for relevance. anyway, i wanted a red leather jacket with ALL THE ZIPPERS sooo bad - and i have a distinct memory of being blown away by alfonso ribeiro breakin' along with michael...probably around the time michael set his head on fire. weird time, right? oh, and human nature is still pretty rad

Interestingly I've never owned or sat down to listen to the All-time best selling album, but since there was a shit-ton of top-10 singles from it I recognize most of the songs. I've tried to separate the artist from a pretty freaky human with peculiar proclivities for sleeping with young boys (PYT takes on a whole new meaning now) so I can say this is a pretty dog-gone good album. The production (by Quincy Jones), writing and performances are all top drawer. He read the room right and sensed that disco was on the way out so he included harder pop/rock songs and having Eddie Van-Halen do a guitar solo on Beat it was a stroke of genius and Billie Jean is a killer song no matter how you cut it. And then there's also the massive influence he had on the growth of MTV and music videos and dance choreography, even fashion, remember that red leather jacket and the glove? There are a few lame-ass songs on the album though and because of that it doesn't get a perfect score.

I'll start with the usual proviso, "this is not my kind of music, but..." The first but goes out to: I'm calling this purely on the music and the impact that music has had, and not on whether I'd like Jackson to come and babysit. The second one is the main event. There can be no denying of the cultural impact Thriller has had on the world it was released in. First it was Billie Jean, then Beat It with its video, and then the whole world (even those that, at the time, despised Jackson's music) holding its breath and watching the half hour long music video (?) of thriller in a kind of a world premier. These things don't happen anymore, and while the world enjoyed many an improvement over the course of the years I don't know if we're not missing a lot by not having universally shared experiences anymore. So: not my kind of music, but also the music of everyone who lived back then.

Title song, 'Thriller' is iconic, a genuine 5/5 song. Several noteworthy songs in their own right (Beat It, Billie Jean, Human Nature). Didn't care much for the others on the album though, thought the beginning was weak. Surprised at Paul McCartney's involvement on the album.

Wow, I just began with such an undisputed classic. Thriller, its apparently dark theme a product of Michael Jackson's struggles as a superstar. With disco stuff losing popularity, Jackson was compelled to make a definitive pop album "where every song is a killer". I haven't heard the bestselling album of all time before, but of course I knew the iconic singles. I've always liked "Billie Jean" and "Beat It". But while the title track has an awesome music video (which is apparently the first MV by a black person that MTV aired) and kickass dance moves, I've never been a fan of it. Still, I can see why this album become a household staple. I definitely heard the rock, the funk, and the soul smoothly blending in the disco pop of this album, its crossovers are all stellar. It's such an explosive and influential pop album. I cannot really assert that every song is definitely a killer. Few songs, especially the last ones, dragged the album. But it's undeniably a classic pop album, and one of the greatest pop album of all time.

Absolute classic, probably my favorite MJ album? "Thriller" is my favorite song for sure, and the music video might be the best music video ever created! More thoughts: it's interesting that this album was described as "darker" by critics initially. It's a more mature voice for MJ but I don't think the songs are any more or less dark than his prior offerings. Just my opinion though.

It was fun to have this come up right around Halloween :) My favorites are probably Human Nature and Wanna Be Startin' Something, but Billie Jean is infectious and the title track is a spooky season essential.

That McCartney song, yuck, “gosh darn.” This seems to implicate McCartney in Michael’s pedophilia, now imagining them fighting over a 6th grade boy like a couple of crocodiles fighting over a gazelle. This album has some absolute bangers, Thirller, Billie Jean, P.Y.T, Wanna Be Starting Something and Beat It, but it also seems to suffer from something all his albums do, it has a few stinkers. He can’t seem to write a perfect album. But he sure can write a hook. Even though it’s hard to distance him from the pedophilia listening to all these lyrics these days, but it can’t be denied, a good album molestation notwithstanding.

This felt less dated than "Bad", to my ear - I guess because of "Bad"'s use of synths? A bunch of these tunes are era-defining monsters. "PYT" was pretty cringe, though. Fave track - has to be "Thriller", really. "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" are pretty epic too.

Really wanna give it a 5 but it's not something I'd add to my record collection. Thriller/Beat It/Billie Jean is a GOAT three in a row. The Girl Is Mine gave me AIDS. Worst thing he's ever done and I've seen Leaving Neverland.

I'd forgotten how many good tunes were on this album. Enough to push it very close to 5 star territory. The fact is, though, that I never was a huge Michael Jackson fan. This one lands at 4 stars for me.

This is it. This is THE pop album. Quincy Jones on production, and Michael Jackson riding high off the success of Off the Wall, coming together for an album of just hits. Well, 7 out of 9 were hits, but that still makes for a juggernaut of an album. It's funky, fresh, and full of energy that makes you want to get up and DANCE. MJ was the biggest music artist in the world. Even long after his death, I reckon people will still call him "The King of Pop". This album is the reason why he's the king. The only thing keeping it from a 5 is some songs don't stack up to others (I'm looking at you, The Lady In My Life). Otherwise this is the quintessential pop album. You either know, or got to know.

Lots of classics - most of the songs I'm familiar with are from this album. The ones on it that I'm NOT familiar with are either cheesy, slow jams that just don't do it for me (the /doggone girl is mine!/ lmao) or up-tempo..also love songs. Though the beats found there are much more infectious than the slow jamz. All that being said, the songs I do know are just too fucking good to give this album less than a 4.

Thriller is brilliant, Michael nails it and sets the benchmark for Rnb/pop music for decades to come. The guitar solo on Beat It is orgasmic but the track ‘The Girl is Mine and it’s Paul McCartney feature is a travesty.

It's Michael Jackson, what else is there to say? Some songs are really really really good (my favorite here easily being Billie Jean) but some other tracks (like the first one) are pretty boring. The best songs are still good enough to merit a 4 for the whole album though.

Wenn man gezwungen würde, diesem Album etwas vorzuwerfen (weil ansonsten jemand die Katze ertränkt oder man einen Monat lang die Flippers hören muss), dann: es ist schon fast ZU perfekt, es geht wahnsinnig slick durch, sodass am Ende vielleicht ein Ticken zu wenig hängen bleibt. Aber mich zwingt ja niemand und deshalb will ich das gar nicht sagen. Für Produktion, Songwriting und seine riesige Latte ewiger Klassiker muss Thriller 5 Punkte bekommen, ganz klar. Nur 4 wären es, weil halt trotzdem nicht eine meiner ewigen Lieblingsplatten. Und wofür entscheide ich mich nun?

Creo que nadie le podrá disputar en un buen rato el título del "rey del pop". Lástima también de sus cuestionables acciones y acusaciones... Fuera de eso, qué brillante es todo acá. Con tres hitazos al menos, creo que MJ pudo hacer sólo este disco y aun así pasar a la historia. De las baladitas, "Human Nature" es la que me gusta, pero en todas luce mucho su voz. El hit que más me gusta quizá sí sea "Billie Jean", aunque "Beat It" le da buena pelea y ahí atrasito está "Wanna Be Startin' Something". Eso sí, se echaba sus canciones más allá de los 3 minutos y medio. 9/10

Re-listened for the generator. Thriller's always a great time. Starts off hype with Wanna Be Startin' Somethin, explodes with the elite duo of Thriller and Beat It followed strongly by Billie Jean, closed well with P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing), gloriously sampled by my boy Kanye. 8/10

It's Thriller.

This one belongs to my childhood, I had the vinyl, used to listen to it a lot, but then grew distant with pop music in general as a teenager. I'm giving it four stars, a rating I only reserve to really important albums in my life or ones that I hadn't listened to before and that honestly blew me away, because I understand the overall importance/significance of this album in modern music history. Plus, it's got its fair share of funky grooves. I might eventually re-incorporate it into my playlists.

Yeah there's a pretty good reason this is agreed upon as one of the best albums of all time, at the very least one of the best pop albums. It's crazy that no one has managed to top it in almost 40 years. Going by modern pop, that's not gonna happen any time soon lol. The hits deserve to be classics, the rest is p good too. I think apart from the big songs on it I prefer Off The Wall just cause it's got more of that 70s disco feel, but it's still getting a 5/5.

So, this my first album. I found about this project from a random Reddit post while researching Tim Buckley's album Goodbye and Hello. Funky and chill, obviously I'm already familiar with three tracks out of nine. Solid tight dance-worthy stuff, but personally I don't often listen to something like this, too much repetition. It's tiring unless I'm in a specific mood. I had to skip the second half of all songs because there was not enough development. But I guess the contrast with Buckley is not helping here.

Ok lots for me to dislike here and I really do think one of the most overrated albums of all time and I just don't get it?? I also think he should have stayed cancelled for good and I have found it frustrating how much the kids at school have been talking about him this year (obviously in relation to biopic) in a positive light without any real knowledge of any of the allegations. Even Cairo Takeaway has been posting "michael jackson innocent" propaganda on their instagram??????????? I can finally appreciate the music video for Thriller (despite being so long) even if I still don't love the song. Beat It and Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' are easily in my top 3/4 songs of his and I do think they are great BUT there were many songs on here that I thought were bad (sorry Em as I will be sharing the opposite opinions to your review) - especially The Girl is Mine, PYT and The Lady in My Life. Human Nature was okay - a new discovery for me but also nothing that amazed me.

With Thriller, too, I would never deliberately choose to listen to it. Did I dislike it, though? No, not entirely. I consider this to be a very uneven album with no real flow to it. I understand not every album needs to be a concept album but this just feels like a bunch of tracks slapped together haphazardly. The transition from The Girl Is Mine to Thriller is so jarring. I absolutely fucking hate The Girl Is Mine. Sure Thriller the track is great, nothing against that. The good songs are good but I really don’t like a good majority of this album, PYT, Baby Be Mine, The Lady in My Life, hate it. I can’t score this a 2 but I will argue that this is terribly overrated. 3 stars

Looking back, it's crazy to think how big this album was. Though there are hits, there are also songs that didn't need to be on the album.

Instrumental, a plethora of sounds that envelop your ears. Easy to listen to. Just not for me.

Impeccably made but just not my vibe

A bit more of a mixed bag than I expected. In the middle of the album you’ve got a run of some of the greatest pop songs of all time, but the. Either side of that the rest of the tracks are pretty lame. I really want to see the woman who has both Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney vying for her attention - she sounds like a freak. Outside of the big three, the rest of the tracks on this are to maudlin and sickly.

This might be my hottest take yet: this is fine. I was a kid at the height of popularity of this album, but just could never get into it. I get why it's popular, but I find it empty and overproduced. As an adult when I gave Michael Jackson another chance I discovered I really like Off the Wall. I would give that 5 stars. But Thriller is just not something I need to listen to.

I suppose I can see why this is liked so much, but it’s not really for me. We have the three classics in the middle- the title track, Beat It, and Billie Jean- which are clearly good songs but played to death 44 years later. Overall, I just think it sounds quite dated. It by no means makes it a bad album, but the sound is very much of its time, and it’s not one that is really my taste, with lots of synth and other artificial sound. In the category of ‘good, but not my speed’.

This is such a stellar album. I feel very comfortable giving it a high rating, but I feel uncomfortable giving it a perfect score. I know that this man is capable of incredibly great production and vocals so when I hear a song like "the girl is mine" feat. Paul McCartney I'm a little disappointed that it's not that good. I feel like this album is really held up by it's heavy hitters and so seeing mediocre songs on the tracklist feels worse than an if this was a slightly above average album with some mediocre songs, if that makes sense. Either way I would feel very confident in a 9/10 score, you should absolutely listen to this before you die and it's cultural impact is so incredibly vast. That being said I cannot ethically and in good faith give this album a 9/10. If the allegations against Michael Jackson are disproved or proven I will update my rating accordingly. I wish that I could find credible evidence to swing my opinion either way but I haven't seen any. This review leaves me questioning whether we can or should enjoy art made by predators. 5/10

The world's best selling record of all time, and for a reason. The performances are top notch, production by Quincy Jones is impeccable, and the playlist is chocked full of classics. Despite all it has going for it, Michael Jackson never captivated me as a musician. He's deserving of the title of "greatest entertainer of all time", but his vocals and song subject matters never really resonated with me. On top of that, the many allegations of child abuse over the years cast a long shadow over this album and his legacy.

I get it that this is one of the most important, because highest purchased, LPs of the 80s. But I skipped Michael Jackson throughout his heyday because I'd been regularly bullied, to the sounds of his music, at the swim practices I was required to go to. That, and because honestly, the "alternatives" to 80s pop, eg Talking Heads, were in fact far more interesting, and often just as danceable, that Michael.

Honestly I expected this would be an unmitigated guilty pleasure. Guilty bc of how I feel about MJ. But actually there are quite a few duds on here and the tempo is just all over the place. Plus the production veers into the bad 80s too often.

This is not my thing, it's hard to listen knowing now that Jackson was at least deeply creepy, and the Paul McCartney duet made me cringe so hard I nearly imploded. But you can see why it was so successful. The music is a perfect fit for that shiny, precise early eighties production.

This album is arguably the perfect evolution from his prior project, with more interesting instrumentals and writing and a really good vocal performance. However, aside from the obvious highlights on the album ( Thriller, Billie Jean, Beat It), I can’t say I enjoy this album as consistently as I did Off the Wall. Honestly, I don’t what they were thinking naming a song PYT.

I was ten when this came out - I remember buying it on cassette because literally everyone else seemed to own a copy. Although I've always found the title track itself a bit annoying, I enjoyed the rest of it and it still stands up pretty well today. I like that polished, souly, pop sound, and he did have a unique voice. The allegations around his private life hang very heavily though, making listening to Michael Jackson records an awkward, conflicting experience these days. I can still grit my teeth and enjoy Off the Wall, but when I do, I keep the volume down and shut the windows. Thriller is the last of his records I liked but it wouldn't occur to me to put it on these days - it was nice to listen again today, but it probably won't happen again.

Only gets better as it goes. Starts pretty hokey 80s, to be honest (sorry, Paul McCartney) but the middle third is the stuff of legend. You can see Michael metabolizing learned sounds (funk, R&B, 80s pop, etc.) and beginning to distill him into his own sound.

I'm kind of embarrassed by the fact that this site is what made me listen to the whole album for the first time in my life,still I fear it is not really my thing. My picks:baby be mine,beat it and Billie jean (ofc),P.Y.T.

Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean carry this record, but the rest of the songs are just plain weird or stupid. The Girl is Mine will haunt me - I've not heard something so idiotic in years.

Fav- the girl is mine 3/5

The three track run is legendary, the rest is fine... Never been a huge MJ fan. Boring cover art.

takes a second to warm up but once its going its going. starts strong then doesnt return until Thriller.

Quite surprised about how up and down the quality is here, given the long-standing reputation it has. The McCartney feature is a particular highlight for its strangeness. Some of the best disco pop ever written but also some duds.

Full of Jackson classics - this is definitely a top tier album from him. He is a nonce though...

5 for musicality, 1 for personality.

A banger of a Quincy Jones record - though it has some odd wee dude all over it 🫣

This was so great at the time Clean sound, excellent production, Michael's silky voice, and a strong list of songs (even if I generally stop listening after Billie Jean) But it feels now like this album is all played out for me - heard it too many times, that I have to switch stations whenever MJ comes on the radio It had its moment, and what a huge moment it was Then the stuff with the kids and animals started And we noticed you also skipped Live Aid!

unfortunately, this album, despite it's incredible highs has always fallen a bit flat for me... it is sometimes a bit to elevator music adjacent for me (the girl is mine and human nature being one the worst examples of this imo) my fav track is P.Y.T. which feels spiritually like an Off The Wall track (the FAR superior album IMO) anyways.. its totally fine and more iconic than anything methinks

Det är bra såklart, men när vi nyss lyssnat på Off the wall blir det ju automatiskt att man jämför, och i den jämförelsen vinner klart Off the wall. Detta är popigare och hitsen är lite mer uttjatade. En trea, stark, men nog inte en fyra. Jag passade på att kolla thrillers 13-min musikvideo. Konstigt att de lagt in ljud från dansstegen så himla högt i mixen. Det har jag inte tänkt på innan.

top 3 - Beat It, Billie Jean, Thriller. Never actually listened to a full album by him, which I only realised now… Anyways, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would, a little underwhelming to me I guess. I think I’m just not a big fan of his vocals. It definitely belongs on this list considering his impact and I can see why people love this so much. I don’t think I would listen to this album in full again but I liked some songs. A little unsure what to rate this.

I rate it a 3.5 for the three banger in the middle of the album

Billie Jean is a good song
