It's thriller. like come on. how can someone not like it. just like. thriller. if you don't like it how. like it's thriller how do you not like thriller. everyone likes thriller. I like thriller. good album.

It's a weird position. I can see everything thats great about this album, even if it's difficult to see past Jackson himself. But it still sounds dated in places. Dated, but so well done.

Such a great album with so many iconic songs. A few songs that felt a little slow but worked great as beautiful ballads - just not the vibe always. So many songs stuck in my head and a great throwback overall.

It's Thriller! The well-deserved greatest selling album of all time. Every second of every track in the album is a bop, and the entire thing is probably the most influential album since Sgt. Pepper's, and considering we still have people in 2023 trying to emulate the "Thriller" sound, there's a good argument in saying it's moreso influential.

I'm parking everything and just rating the songs. One of the greatest albums of all time. It has sold more copies than anything else. It was a massive part of my childhood. Outstanding.

There are three bona fide amazing classics on here. Then some good songs, a couple of fillers, and one cringer. Sir Paul, the girl is yours, Michael didn't even like her.

This is a masterpiece. Despite what you may think of him outside of the music, you can't deny how well crafted every piece of this is. If you're not going to give the credit Michael at least give props to Quincy Jones. This is the best pop record period.

I was never a huge Jackson fan and of his catalogue this always felt like the slightly less deserving massive hit that followed a much better album. The best thing about this is the video to the title single. In a bubble this would be a 3. He loses a point for being who he was.

Maybe the most ubiquitous album of all time, I found this one hard to really judge. Like a lot of posters here, I've known a lot of these songs since my childhood and have varying views of them today. The 1-2 punch of Beat It and Billie Jean are still wonderful and top songs of the era, Wanna Be Startin Somethin is still a great kick off and rocks, and I even kind of like Human Nature and PYT as great come-downs from the middle of the album. Now for the bad, Thriller as a song really doesn't hold up for me, The Girl is Mine brings together the worst of both MJ and McCartney in one shmaltzy package, and the other album tracks are kind of forgettable. And yes, the baggage with MJ probably makes me less accepting of this album's obvious faults.

So... unpopular opinion time: I don't like Michael Jackson. I also have a hard time separating art from the artist so I'm not sure if I could fully enjoy this album even if I did like his music better. Perhaps fittingly, I like this album better than Bad which I got a while ago in my personal list, but I am not a fan.

While I do think that Thriller, Beat it, and Billie Jean is one of the best trio of consecutive pop songs in history, to me the rest of the album just isn’t consistent enough to get to a 5. Still very very good. Sorry!

Can you imagine making an album where Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean are all back-to-back and they're not even the only good songs on the album? I can't. What a ride.

The triple snare drum into one of the grooviest riffs of all time to open the album on 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' is otherworldly People were actually telling man to 'Beat It' back in the day. Thriller is all killer no filler? Sure, it's a pillar of pop iconography, but the shillers that can't see the weaknesses really need to chill here. It absolutely has some of the best pop songs ever written on here. But Human Nature is good not great; The Lady in My Life is just a step above mid; and good god in heaven The Girl Is Mine is so dogshit it makes me question two of music's biggest icons. The bops still outweigh the flops by a mile, but there ARE flops. This isn't the greatest pop album of all time; it's not even The King of Pop's greatest album (or even second greatest).

This is arguably one of the most important albums in pop's history, and I believe it is still yet to be topped.

The GOAT! Front to back the album is a solid 10/10 with no skips. I didn’t realize it was only 9 songs and 42mins. Forty years later and this album sounds like it came out tomorrow.

Tja, världens genom tiderna mest sålda album. Finns väl inte så mycket mer att säga. Så jag spar på adjektiven. Ändå bra. Inte ett album jag själv någonsin sökt upp, sjukt nog. Men monsterhitsen (och vilka jävla hits det är, finns det någon sjukare låtföljd än Thriller -> Beat It -> Billie Jean?) är ändå monsterhits av en anledning. Thriller sämst av den trion, de andra två på hyfsat jämn nivå. Bästa låt: Beat It.

While I don’t know if I would class this as ‘best-selling album of all-time” in my own book, this is still a strong LP fill of fun instrumentals and great songwriting. The rising/falling action from ballads at the beginning/end to the monstrous three-song run in the middle keeps things flowing well, and the songs in question (“Thriller,” “Beat It,” and “Billie Jean”) are so rich and evocative across the board it’s easy to see why they’ve become Jackson’s biggest hits.

One of the best albums of the 80s hands down. I’ll try make some lesser made observations on it’s craft. The sound of what sounds like rocks being struck apart on Wanna Be Startin’ Something is a startling metaphor for the unstoppable momentum of its mantra. The whole album is underrated lyrically, from Baby Be Mine’s “Won’t you stay with me until the morning sun? I promise you now that the dawn will be different, Lady can't you see that heaven's just begun, It's living here inside our hearts” and also Human Nature’s “four walls won’t hold me tonight” The Girl is Mine has gorgeous arrangement and the back and forth between Michael and Paul is endearing. The wolves howling at the start of Thriller signal the commitment to the bit, “you feel the cold hand and wonder if you’ll ever see the sun” is a great line. The back up vocalists on Beat It doing MJ ad-libs is a masterstroke. Billie Jean is a masterpiece of layering vocals, the background “he-he”s and “no-no”s, the “Don’t think twice! Hoo!”. The tongue flicks at the beginning. Human Nature is very romantic and whimsical lyrically, synths are beautiful. PYT’s synth squeal is irresistible, no wonder Kanye sampled it. The Lady In My Life has a beautiful ode to eternal love. Ignore the narrative that this album is hits and filler. A masterpiece from front to back.

I clearly remember listening to the radio in late 1982 and the announcer telling us that we were going to hear the first new single from the long-awaited new Michael Jackson album. It would be a duet with Paul McCartney and I was excited. The song was “The Girl is Mine,” I was 14, and, doggone it, it made me vomit. “Well,” I thought, “so much for that album.” It was then a surprise that for the whole next year, the soundtrack to our lives was most of the rest of the album. Apparently I wasn't the only one wondering, "What the hell were they thinking starting with that one?" There are a couple more sickly sweet songs on the album, but even so, as a whole it is a powerhouse of amazing, iconic songs (and videos) that changed the course of 1980s music. "Beat It" will always get me fired up. This album definitely made its place in history and there it rightfully remains forty years later...even if we'd all happily forgotten about that doggone girl and the cringy banter over her.

I was never over the moon about this album, and I still was not thrilled (yep...) this time around (independent of what feelings I may have about MJ). Two, or maybe three, outstanding singles, but the rest I can take or leave...and a couple of those I may actually prefer to leave... But the two or three had me absolutely unable to sit still!

Summer of '83. In the high school auto shop building. Poking paper napkins through chicken wire tacked to a flat-bed truck, building a float for the Central Wyoming Fair and Rodeo Parade. A Thriller cassette is in a boom box. Each time a side ends, someone is there to flip it over and press play. When we get to that part of Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', everyone stops and yells "Yee Haw!" (Though the Apple Music lyrics tell me now it's "he ha." Whatever.) This was the soundtrack to our lives for more than a year. It changed everything and it meant a lot.

Thriller is a monster of a pop album, made by a monster of a man. I can’t resolve that here and struggle having both in my head at once. I’m totally comfortable with Quincy Jones’ production perfection. No wonder this remains at the pinnacle of pop.

1 star cause I dislike his music, do not find it genuine at all. Sure,he did work with some fine producers and there are some catchy riffs, but all in all his music is boring and silly and slick. His constant 'hihihi's en 'ooohs' are annoying. And no single person on the world believes that he was Bad and after 2 seconds you wish he would stop cause he had enough. O well, just an opinion.

Paul McCartney really lost his shit in the 80s. The duet here is lame but when Thriller starts it is all forgotten.

It still slaps and slaps hard. Nine songs, 7 of which were released as singles, and ALL SEVEN cracked the Billboard Top 10. You can make the argument that the other two songs would have been Top 10 Hits if they were also released as singles ("The Girl Is Mine", a duet with Paul McCartney which is the weakest song on the album, was the first single released, and that thing made it all the way to number 2, so Jacko and producer Quincy Jones were clearly on a roll). Vincent Price and Goddamn Eddie Van Halen make cameo appearances for crying out loud.

I'm sure I've heard all of Thriller before, but a couple of the tracks were new to me. I have seen all of the videos from this album. There is so much pop-culture weight to this album. Vincent Price's voice over on "Thriller", a member of the Beatles on "The Girl Is Mine", and "Beat It" (my favorite track) and "Billie Jean". I had forgotten about "Human Nature" but apparently all of those lyrics are stuck in my head. My opinion of this album, like Michael Jackson in general, is split. I would put up with listening to some of these tracks again, and I might even choose to play "Beat It" of my own choice. There are many tracks I would skip. When I first heard music from Thriller I was confused by the songs with lyrics speaking to girls as a love interest - they still seem so weird. "Billie Jean" and "The Girl is Mine" both creeped me out, but not in the same way. "The Lady in My Life" was my least favorite track. Jackson's rhythms also change otherwise normal phrases into some sort of foreign language for me. Musically this album is definitely from the 80s, with strong ties back to the 70s. This sounds like the follow up to Jackson's Off The Wall. Even with the pop-culture weight, at best the album as a whole comes out as "okay, I guess".

I was afraid this album would be like bad where I ended up actually disliking it but this shit was awesome. Every song was masterfully produced and the big hits are still great even though I’ve heard beat it and Billie Jean hundreds of times. Doesn’t get more 80s than this but also doesn’t get too much better than this.

It is a strange coincidence that this album was generated for me to listen to today, as it was less than a week ago that I was requested to review it on Instagram. I thought I’d recognise every song of this album based on the simple fact that he’s Michael Jackson, but I surprisingly do not. Songs I already knew: Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’, Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, Human Nature Favourites: Thriller, Human Nature, The Girl Is Mine It is very clear from this album why Michael Jackson was known as the Prince of Pop. His voice is incredible throughout (if a little funny at times with all the hee-hees) and his music remains very catchy and easy to sing along to. The Girl Is Mine stood out to me as a song I wasn’t remotely familiar with, yet really enjoyed. My only real criticism of this album is something that could only really be said with hindsight - P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) does sound somewhat dodgy in light of the many very public allegations towards MJ.

Absolute classic. Iconic with very few forgettable moments. Probably has the most iconic three consecutive tracks of all time. Holds a special place in my heart. Truly a Thriller indeed

Separate the art from the artist... I know virtually all the songs on this but don't remember ever listening to it. It's good, obviously, and Billie Jean is remarkable, but I find it difficult to enjoy because I can't really do what I suggested in the first sentence

Stone cold classic

No one my age could possibly listen to this album objectively. However taking a fresh look at the cover how did I not notice he is wearing something that zippers? And sideburns?!? I'm not clear what he's laying next to, a nice tiled shower? Still, I can't get enough of the 80's halo and the paisley pocket square. OK so Michael and Paul fighting over a woman like dogs with a bone isn't great. And no, blood never rhymed with neighborhood. Nonetheless. It's Thriller. Beat It. Billie Jean. Maximum iconic. The moonwalk! Minus a star for all that is to come. I can't bring myself to go any lower than that.

I already know most of these songs just looking at the album cause I grew up on this. There were a few that I didn't know. I looked up the history of a few of them on wikipedia, and Billie Jean makes a lot more sense now that I listen to the lyrics.

Fantastic album regardless of MJs later life choices. Always thought the enunciation on the song 'Thriller' was weird though. Sounds like he's singing "driller". Either way, great songs, even the terrible McCartney one.

I haven’t listened to this album in a hundred years and it DID NOT DISAPPOINT. I would give it 5 stars ALLBE for Human Nature.

Don´t like songs like PYT with some TLC for a baby, girl or lady or whoever..... But can´t "beat" a song like Billy Jean.

The first LP I ever bought, and still one of my favourite albums of all time. Pop music executed and produced to perfection.

I don't understand review bombing. If you don't like someone, or their politics or if you think they are a pedo - then don't listen. Why do you feel like you need to give it a bad review/score? Do you feel like you need to somehow keep other people from listening? Slag off. Thriller is a masterwork of pop music. It's not my preferred style, but it is demonstrably excellent.

I mean, come on. Thriller - one of the best selling albums of all time. In the mid 80s, when the radio was your main source of music, Thriller absolutely dominated. It was everywhere. Multiple songs popular at once - they were even selling single sequined gloves in a bun at the register at Penny’s in the Huntington WV mall. No, I didn’t get one. But I totally would have if it wouldn’t have shocked my mom. I don’t live every song on this, but most of them I do - still holds up 30 years later.

What more can be said? I’ll tell you what: Michael Jackson > Elvis

Not a big MJ fan, and really not a fan of 80s pop with all its excessive indulgences. But, this is pretty good. Hard not to groove along. The main problem I have with it, is a lack of emotional connection. The intention of the album was to create an album with each track being as good as the main single, which it probably achieves. However, as a result it feels a little mechanical, creating tracks to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. As much as it doesn't sit well with my biases and opinions on the artist, it absolutely belongs on the list, its influence is undeniable, and so it has to get at least 4, pretty close to 5. An album to play at a Halloween party, not the strongest atmosphere for a whole album, but it works. 07/11/22

This album is just phenomenal. It’s like, every song is perfect, then somehow the next song is even better, then the next song is somehow even better again? I honestly want to go back and remark some of my other rating because they don’t deserve to have the same 5 stars as this masterpiece. What genre is it? pop/rock/disco/80/soul/funk? It is the best album, ever.

I knew this would be a 5 when I got it, as I enjoy a lot of songs off of here already. I liked the songs that I hadn't heard before a lot, which I kind of didn't expect. Great album! My favourite songs were The Girl Is Mine, Baby Be Mine, and The Lady in My Life.

A strong album that any pop music lover should enjoy. Michael sings excellently but some of the sounds do date the production. Good.

Decantándose por el pop y la música disco, es un álbum súper fácil de escuchar. Lo más alucinante de este trabajo, más allá de la interpretación de Michael, es la producción. Encargada por Quincey Jones, supo hacer que cada sonido encaje de forma justa y darle total identidad, algo muy difícil de lograr. Además de crear himnos que siguen sonando al día de la fecha, MJ, cautivó a todos con su talento, algo que en este álbum se ve en cada uno de sus temas.

The wiki states MJ wanted to make an album where “every song was a killer” and Quincy Jones has absolutely bingoed it. Not a skip worthy song on it. Silly, really.

This gets 5 due to the bangers. The run of songs consisting of Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean and Human Nature has to be the strongest run of songs possibly ever. Whilst I don’t like this album as much as the other 5s I have given, the longevity and absolute bangers in here outweigh songs like The Lady In my Life and The Girl is Mine. 89/100: The album generator saw my review cutting down pop as a genre yesterday and gave me the King of Pop’s best album as a test of my integrity. I guess I fail, well technically I don’t. To call Michael Jackson’s music “pop” is to try to capture the smell of a rose by painting it. Calling “Thriller” a “pop” album strips it of all its nuance and beauty. This album is disco, it’s funk, it’s rock, it’s soul. It’s all of those things before it’s pop, unless you’re simply defining the pop genre as “popular” music, in which case this is definitely that. Admittedly, I have never listened to “Thriller” in its entirety, least of all in one continuous sitting. This is one of those albums that demands to be listened to this way. There’s simply no other way to appreciate this album to the fullest without hearing “Thriller,” “Beat It,” and “Billie Jean” back to back to back. These are arguably three of the best songs of their decade. Not only are they all on the same album, they’re consecutively tracked. This is a bold decision from Michael Jackson, one that would be hard to pull of if the rest of the album fell flat—and even the best of songs can fall flat juxtaposed with those three absolute bangers. But this album skirts that issue. “The Girl is Mine,” a beautiful song prominently featuring none other than Paul McCartney, casually and calmly prepares you for the musical awakening that awaits you in the following three songs (obviously the “Thriller” to “Billie Jean” sequence). The rest of the songs on the album don’t back down either. “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” gets you bobbing your head, maybe even moving your hips. “Baby Be Mine” grabs you by the hand, twirls you around, and transports you to a dance floor—of course equipped with a disco ball and bright lights. Reeling from the end of “Billie Jean,” “Human Nature” settles you down; puts you at ease; starts a warm, calming fire in your soul. “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” stokes the fire started by “Human Nature” until it’s burning with passion in your heart. Finally, “The Lady in My Life” rocks you back to Earth, aptly ending your journey through this album. A beautiful album.

This is the perfect pop album. An absolute masterpiece and incredibly consistent. Aside from all the singles the rest could have been singles. The high point of 80s production adds a beautiful listening experience. There's a good reason why this album sold so many copies and it still stands up.

Yuk. An uneven and overrated album and that’s before bringing in the singer’s history.

Lots of great stuff on this album, but there are a few forgettable tracks. And then there's "P.Y.T." (more on that later...) "Beat It" was a song I had not hear din a while, but then my kid wanted us to play "Beat It" in the car ALL THE TIME when we'd drive to daycare. That was like... 5 years ago? So I kind of got back in to the mindframe of not wanting to hear the song again. Even with Eddie Van Halen in it. "Wanna Be Startin' Something" is a great opener to the album. So... "P.Y.T.' I have mixed feelings about this song. The whole high-pitched thing is really annoying. The whole bridge works well, but the chipmunk bit is just... ugh. The three non-hits are just ... forgettable to me. But the other ones are pretty strong to me. So on the strength of those, I am giving it a 4.

Easy 5. I wore this record out as a kid. Probably the cassette too. Truly one of the greatest albums of all time. The beats, the blend of rock and pop and R&B, the lyrics, the varied vocals, the everything. There is such a range of song styles and yet every single one of them is a hit (well maybe not The Lady in My Life). But there are great artists whose greatest hits aren't as good as this album. What else needs to be said?

Ignoring all the drama and ethical issues around Michael Jackson, this album is just too important to not give it a 5. Thriller, Billie Jean, Beat It, Baby Be Mine, P.Y.T., all on one album? Insane. The only blemish is the horrible “The Girl is Mine” with Paul McCartney. In truth, this is my first time listening to Thriller from cover to cover. Is there a more iconic three-song run in an album than Thriller, into Beat It, into Billie Jean? I went into this album with high expectations, and even the songs I was not already familiar with were awesome. This is the easiest 5-star rating I've given so far.

Ok, so there are two thorny issues to contend with here. (1) The dubious behaviours of Michael Jackson throughout his life, from the bizarre to the (definitely not smooth) criminal, (2) the quite frankly absurd appearance of Paul McCartney on The Girl is Mine (instantly rendering it the weakest song on the album). Without those factors, this album would be an undeniable 5/5, certified gold-standard, all-time superlative superlative superlative superlative. Can we detach the artist from the art? In my view, whether one can or not, this is some of the finest music ever written, such catchy bass lines and crisp beats. For me, the music stands alone, and it's a solid 5/5.

It is hard to separate the music from the phenomenon that Thriller was. I tried to ignore everything extraneous to the music and the future freak show Michael Jackson became. I could quibble - Thriller gets a bit cheesy and the McCartney duet is not the best. I personally like Off The Wall better. None of that matters. This is great music. It is understandable that it is the greatest selling album of all time.

This album is the pop music champion. Almost every song was a hit. It also inspired music videos to become bigger and more over the top. Most of these songs have aged very well. I'd like to give this one a 4.5 but I have to round up as it launched Jackson into a completely other stratosphere.

Easy 5. Every song is an absolute banger and this plays like a greatest hits. Quincy and MJ really cooked up some fire on this one. Each song is distinct but the album feels cohesive. My favorites are PYT, Baby Be Mine, and Human Nature.

The guy can write pop songs that's for sure. Has songs to dance to, rock to, think about peacefully, whatever. MJ gives an incredible performance, displaying his extensive personality: loud, fast, and spontaneous, while also exposing several heartfelt or friendly moments. Production is the best among its era, original yet versatile and full of depth. Very electronic-driven but follows his disco formula (like a predecessor to Daft Punk), and deeply incorporates rock and soul. As much of a Beatles fan I am, it disappoints me to say that the only weak song is "The Girl is Mine" (only thing I like is the production). Every other song is an absolute perfect banger (or near to it)! Track ordering couldn't be much better (excluding "The Girl is Mine"), with the first two pulling in the audience, the mega hits in the middle, and the slower, more focused tracks at the end. Favorites: Thriller, Beat It, Human Nature, PYT

I can't be doing with Michael Jackson. Okay, this is good if you like this mix of pop/funk/r&b, but the best selling album of all time? That just shows the vacuity of a large percentage of the record buying public. ;)

Immaculate. Nearly every song has its surprises, and the hits are the hits. I was unaware of Toto's involvement, but you can hear it, and it just barely works. The disco sound on Thriller is teetering.

I have been in no rush to listen to Michael Jackson's music recently, but it's undeniable that this album has some great songs.

Grew up on this album. Actual vinyl album. Every single song on this is a hit. Say what you want about the man, but this is the gold standard of 1980's pop. Truly the King of Pop. Propbably my least favorite song on here is the title song, but even still, this entire piece of art is museum worthy. This was really great to listen to once again.

Album is on here for a reason, there's not a bad song on here. Michael Jackson continues to seduce me with his voice.

5 I’ve loved this album since 5th grade. The melodies, the beats, the bass. Quincy Jones’ touch is everywhere on this album. It’s so much fun and it’s so theatrical. So many songs on here are all-time classics. The 40th anniversary is this year and it’s absolutely worth buying on vinyl. Favorites include: All of them. Seriously. I love all of the songs on this and the 25th anniversary bonus tracks.

3.5 Fun fact: I previously reviewed this album on my unaired, short-lived series "Boozy Listening". I gave it 3.5 then (after two strong cocktails), and I'm gonna stand by that now. This album starts off really strong - Wanna Be Startin' Something is not only a great opener, but probably one of my favorite MJ songs. That spirit continues on Baby Be Mine, loses me a little bit on Girl is Mine, and then we get to the mega hits... and man I was gonna talk shit, but I underestimated how much I was going to enjoy listening to Thriller, despite having it heard it many, many times before. Then Beat It is always great, though Billie Jean didn't phase me much. I feel like that song in particular I've heard enough in my lifetime to the point where it simply harmlessly "exists" now. Maybe that's just bias despite the enormous popularity of the song, but hell it's a subjective review. My review of the album would probably be higher if we stopped there, but unfortunately the last three tracks really start to lose me. It just feels like the "high" of the album is over to me after Billie Jean and I'm afterglowing until The Lady in My Life's long conclusion. I see why this album is so highly regarded, and while I hold respect for it myself, and just isn't quite a "top album" for me. Favorite songs: Wanna Be Startin' Something, Thriller, Beat It

I've never been a big fan of Michael's music, regardless of the kid-diddling accusations. I can't deny this is an impressive album though. Listening to it now I appreciate some of the songs that didn't get quite as much airplay as the monster hits - songs like PYT and Human Nature. Strangely, even though I love Paul McCartney, my least favorite song on the album is their duet. 3 stars.

Maybe it's because of personal bias because I grew up with Bad and Dangerous, but Thriller never did it for me. It was before my time. On the following albums there's more of MJ and less and less of Quincy Jones. I prefer it when Michael is at the helm. Sure, the three songs in the middle are absolute monsters plus I've always had a soft spot for Human Nature. But everything else on the album doesn't live up to the big 3 (Thriller, Beat it, Billie Jean).

Like every other person on the planet, I’ve heard most of the tunes on this album. Despite thinking I knew what to expect walking in I was still impressed by the quality of this record. Wanna Be Startin Something really set the tone and Baby Be Mine was an excellent follow up. I swear I’ve heard that beat sampled in a million other tunes and that little robotic synth is oh so good - this one got me dancing in the chair but there was a very noticeable BPM shift around 3:30 that should have been ironed out. Thriller > Beat It > Billie Jean has to be one of the gnarliest triple threats out there! Of the three Beat It is my favorite, that intro is delicious. The Girl is Mine is a groovy beat but the voice over and basically the entire subject of the song has aged horribly. This tune, Human Nature, and The Lady in my Life were a cut below everything else. Hot take: This is a pretty damn good pop album. The 1-2-3 punch of "Thriller", "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" has to be one of the best runs on an album of all time. There isn't much I could say about these songs that hasn't already been said better a million times before; just that they absolutely deserve the timeless popularity and cultural significance they have attained. "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" is an equally amazing opener, and I'm honestly a bit surprised it didn't reach that same level of acclaim. However, while those tracks may be some of the best pop songs ever produced, for an album to receive a perfect rating from me, every song needs to be at least memorable... and that unfortunately is not the case here. While "Human Nature" and "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" are perfectly enjoyable, "Baby Be Mine" is a bit boring. Meanwhile, slower songs "The Girl Is Mine" and "The Lady in My Life" just haven't aged very well to my ears, which seems to be the case for many slower songs that I have encountered from the 80s.. it's just not my style. Well here it is, the biggest selling album of all time. In a rare moment on this list where prestige and popularity converge. It's hard to see this album for what it was when it debuted because it now carries so much weight and significance just in terms of its reputation. Here's the thing though, Michael Jackson, love him or hate him took pop music superstar to a level that seemed impossible. The man himself will continue to puzzle us all, but musically - what a powerhouse. His evolution from child star to the king of pop is wild. His voice is a marvel - and when it comes to this album, the songs are all so, for lack of a better word, interesting. 7 of of these 9 tracks were charting singles. "You're a vegetable," in "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" is curious. And there's a Billie Jean reference in that song too. Never heard that before! With Thriller, Jackson pioneered the new way to put a pop record together - heavy production, centralized vocals, catchy hooks, focus on singles, marketing and revolutionary use of music video. I'm curious who's more responsible for "The Girl is Mine," I mean, I am a devoted Beatles fan, and I love McCartney - but what the hell is this song doing on here, and why , and what and huh? The conversation part of that song is cringeworthy. It almost made me give this thing a 4/5, but most of my 5/5 albums still have duds on them, just not this big of a dud. But the other 8 make up for it in spades. There's tons to talk about with this album; I haven't even mentioned Billie Jean, Beat It, Thriller, or PYT yet. This is where the Moonwalk came from for Christ's sake! It's a 5 album - and I'm saying this as someone who's not a big solo Michael Jackson fan, but I can't deny the way this one pops!

I was 10 when it came out. Everyone of all ages seem to listen to this album, it was everywhere. At least in my lifetime no album or artist was ever bigger. I wasn't the biggest Michael Jackson fan but it was hard not to like this album or the videos during the golden age of MTV. I'm given it 5 stars not for the music per se but for everything that went along with it at that time.

The power of this record is undeniable even if it isn’t the style of music you enjoy. I’m not a fan of all of it but it was a juggernaut of hits with global reach and enduring impact.

Definitivamente es un gran disco si bien no es perfecto. La colaboración con McCartney es más bien mala y siento que tiene un par de baladas de relleno que si bien no estorban tampoco suman mucho que digamos. Quizá por el gran éxito de la columna vertebral del disco las demás quedan muy atrás y se siente como un disco un tanto desbalanceado. 4.5 que tristemente tengo que bajar a 4 porque no me voló la cabeza.

Este es de esos en los que hay que separar la obra del artista. Michael Jackson podrá estar prácticamente cancelado hoy en día, pero este disco es una joya y eso no se puede negar. Debo decir que sí tiene dos pequeños puntos que no me gustan: las entradas en las que Michael habla con su vocecita fina y afeminada (en P.Y.T.) y la horrible colaboración con McCartney… Pffff nunca imaginaría que este dueto haría algo tan poco agradable. Por otro lado, el resto del disco es una chulada. Incluso el mismo P.Y.T. una vez que acaba de jotear en la intro, es un rolón. Y ya no digamos del triple combo ganador de Thriller, Beat It y Billie Jean, que básicamente pusieron la pauta de cómo se hace el pop a partir de ahí, de cómo se puede meter elementos del Rock más alejado de este pop (Eddie Van Halen haciendo el solo de Beat It, o los miembros de Toto haciendo casi toda la instrumentación) y de cómo un disco puede tener una tonelada de buenos sencillos. Encima de todo, comparado con Bad, que fue el otro que hemos oído de MJ, este disco no abusa de las rolas sexosas ni de las rolas con sonido "tribal". Si bien ambas cosas existen en Thriller, no es en exceso com oen Bad.

The musical merits of this album are overshadowed by the hype and his unfortunate history. We are here to judge the album I believe? At the time I was pulled along by the rollercoaster too and loved it. There's nothing deep and meaningful here, it's supremely well produced and slick pop music with very little to match it. Every track is a hit.

This is an album that really- hands down, no argument - belongs on this list (for a change). Michael Jackson, who later was dubbed King of Pop, delivers an irresistible mix of Pop, Soul and R&B. Every track grooves, every track shines due to the production work of one of the true masters - Quincy Jones. The rhythm section is sometimes human, sometimes programmed, but always grooving. There is even the famous guitar solo on Beat It, played by Eddie Van Halen. And MJ himself delivers on almost every track. The songs themselves are fantastic as well, the only odd one out is The Girl is Mine - I find both the lyrics and their delivery by Jackson on that song to be quite cringeworthy. But apart from that, this album is a true, iconic classic. 4.5/5

Four Stars And A Half. Why not five stars? Let's be *a little* serious for a second: an album with a cheesefest such as "The Girl Be Mine" can't possibly boast deserving a five-star review. Especially when such cheesefest is on the third slot of said album. McCartney is to blame on this one too, but mostly, the real culprit is probably producer Quincy Jones here. He should just have put his foot down and *at least* change the ordering of the tracks. In a way, this dud also foretells everything that went wrong with Michael Jackson afterwards (it's part of "Hisstory" ha ha). So I guess you'd better listen to it *once*, and then just skip it everytime you spin this album again. Just a friendly piece of advice here... This minor debacle being out of the way now, the fact that everything else on *Thriller* is spot on, even with such an early misstep in the tracklisting, tells a lot about how important this record is overall. Production values AND songwriting here go hand in hand to give an avid amateur of groove the time of their life. Rarely have pop, funk, rock, disco and r'n'b been so intricately and artfully mixed together. This album is just the stuff of legend--not only for those eternal hits that made Michael Jackson as a solo artist enter music history through luxurious front gates (the title-track, "Billie Jean", "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" or "Beat It"), but also for all those incredibly flawless arrangements driving the whole shebang to the max. This here is the best *blockbuster* album the eighties have ever given to the world, for which Jones can now be thanked a thousand times. Each rumbling bassline, each guitar lick, each beat, each comma--each raspy breath from Michael, even--is like a sonic dream come true. The care for details just leaves you speechless. And yet, just like many of those blockbuster movies from the same decade (by Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard or John Landis, who actually directed "Thriller"'s unforgettable video), the overall story this record offers you is also filled with a lot of charm and soul, as ludicrously grand and insanely ambitious as its settings are. The first record I had to review for this app was Jackson's aptly-named *Bad*. One of the very rare one-star reviews I have ever written for this project (please feel free to read it for yourself, for what it's worth). *Of course* I also had "Thriller" in mind as I wrote it, wishing I had had that one to review instead, if only to set the record straight about what I really thought about Michael Jackson as an artist. The circle is now complete. Now I can go on on this thing with a lighter mind (and with very open ears, that goes without saying... :) ...). In the meantime, I'll keep on trying to practice my moonwalk steps in my living room as I play this album again and again and again... The iconic one, because of all the fantastic hits that are classics today It is a a landmark pop album alright, however moving slightly away from the older RnB and soul infused MJ albums, I personally like better. In retrospect it also comes out a bit overproduced (as many soft rock/ power pop/ RnB albums of the 80’s). So for me not the top MJ album as it is to many. Prefer the previous ones.

5.0 - The first cassette album I ever owned back when I was just 4. And 40 years later it still sparkles. Like everyone else on the planet, I've heard "Billie Jean" countless times and still think it's a banger. Same with "Beat It", especially Van Halen's guitar solo. "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" sounds like something cooked up by Fela Kuti and it's non-stop bops. "P.Y.T" is another stone-cold jam. My only criticism is with "The Girl is Mine" - Paul McCartney stinks up the vibe and I just don't believe that the two of them would ever argue over a girl.

Michael Jackson is probably the ultimate case of art vs the artist. For years I didn't listen to his music initially because of the Neverland documentary and pedo allegations, and then just forgot about him for a while really. But damn I'd be lying if Thriller isn't a 5. Most artists would kill to have half of these songs in their career, let alone on one album. Just can't help getting down with it. My only critque is that it ends on The Lady In My Life, the weakest song by a mile.

p496. 1982. 3 stars THE soundtrack of a million 80s nightclubs worldwide. It's packed with hits, and Quincey Jones is on top form. Having said that, there is filler - Baby Be Mine, The Girl Is Mine (hang your head in shame Macca) - and the 80's synths haven't dated well (PYT). Jackson sounds like he never really cracked puberty, and those shrill whoops get annoying real soon. It's not as good as Off The Wall. "You're a vegetable (you're a vegetable)/Still they hate you (still they hate you)"

I've quite enjoyed rediscovering this album. So many great songs, I just love the interplay between Paul and Michael on The Girl Is Mine. Thriller itself, oh man, that video clip!. Beat It, Bille Jean!

Clearly, Michael Jackson and his album, Thriller are iconic, it can't be denied, as this album is the best selling album of all-time. 70 million copies have been sold worldwide, so 70 million can't be wrong, can they? I am NOT one of those 70 million, but it seems over my lifetime, I've been forced to listen to songs from this record at least that many times. Just because a record gets endless airplay, music videos have been viewed billions of times, millions of people have seen him live and all those copies of the album were sold doesn't mean it's any good. Not to forget, that glove, that dance, his zoo, the kids...!! I had seen this album in bargain bins more than any other album, so you know people's parents bought this record because it was popular. The next generation that has followed have also been tricked into thinking this is a great piece of music...spoiler alert, it isn't!

A good album, a great album even, but one of the best ever? Ehh... seems like a 4/5 to me. There's the huge hits like "Beat It", "Billie Jean" and the title track, and then there's songs that are just kind of there (not bad, but not quite memorable and overshadowed by the huge hits) like "Human Nature" and "The Lady In My Life". We immediately start with a banger of an opening track. Honestly just off the opening track itself, 10/10. Song 2 is also a banger. Nice and mellow after track 1. Album still at 10/10. Third song is also mellow. Hmm. Maybe we should pick it up a bit, but it’s still so smoooth and jazzy. It’s just the opener was so explosive. I guess maybe we do need to chill out. Wait! A feature!! This song is incredible I take it back I was being foolish. Still at 10/10. OMG THRILLER! BABES. 10 OUT OF 10. NOT A SINGLE FLAW PLSSSS. Is there crack in this album? In this song? And now we go straight into Beat It??? Can this man let me BREATHE?? Guess what. 10. Out of. 10. Oh my dayyysssss. Billie Jean. Girl. 10/10. Next song. Much more mellow which is a needed break after the bangers. 10!10. Penultimate track. A groovy banger. Damn. Still at 10=10. Final song. Nice and slow to close out probably one of the best albums I’ve ever listened to. Why did it take me so long to listen to this album in its entirety? It’s brilliant. I al ways believed and agreed when people said this was one of the best albums of all time, but now I’m listening first hand. Truly, it’s incredible. I can’t really think of a single thought. I’ve loved the sub-45 minute listening experience. 10/10.

Great pop album

My re-appraisal of Thriller: Bang average album brought up by Beat It and Billie Jean. Thriller is just background noise to an expensive video, and The Girl is Mine is one of the worst songs ever made. 3/5

Wow, was this all the way back in 1982? The way it was still so prevalent in the late 80s, I would've guessed later. Yes, of course, this album was and is absolutely massive -- best selling album of all time, the accompanying videos impact on MTV (again, only 1982; still early days of music videos) -- and it was everywhere. I was still mostly into rock, hard rock, etc., all through the 80s, so I didn't actively pay attention to this album at the time, but, as noted, nearly impossible to avoid. Listening to the full album today, I hear quite a few tracks I genuinely enjoy even after all this time. The "big three" -- Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean (dang, that bassline in Billie Jean, so infectious!) -- are to me really catchy and fun, with some real musicianship underneath. I saw the documentary 'This Is It' -- was supposed to be a documentary of Michael Jackson's Summer 2009 concerts, then was recut to deal with his demise -- and seeing in that film how musically talented Michael really was. I don't consider myself a devoted fan or anything, but when his songs worked, they really worked.

Listening to Billie Jean, thriller and beat it back to back is an amazing trio. The album is still strong though does has some syrupy ballad songs that don’t hold up. He was a creep but still had a great album.

What am I supposed to do with this shit? I try so hard not to let an artist's personal life effect how I review their albums, but it's so hard not to think about it with Michael Jackson. Similar to how I had to Marilyn Manson's many allegations of domestic abuse, I'll soldier on. Obviously this album is incredible. It's not just that every song is good, virtually every song was a huge hit. This album begins with Wanna Be Startin Something, and that is one of the MINOR hits on this album. Any other album, that would be one of the most notable tracts, but by the time you get through Thriller, Beat It, and Billie Jean you forget all about it. This is unquestionably Quincy Jones's best work, and it's sad that so much of that is tainted by Micheal being a fucking pedophile It's a 5/5 album. It would be a lot easier to enjoy this album if Michael hadn't been everything that he was. but what can you do?

Awesome r&b/ pop album. Obviously this album is a bit tarnished by mjs late legacy, but it does not stop me from boosting to the album and appreciating it as a piece of music history

Ok so we are going to do the greatest pop album thats ever been made. Coolcoolcoolcool. Baby Be Mine has a couple wild transitions in the middle that caught me way off guard. The middle of this album is so stacked with hits that it is hard to ignore. I don't find it as good as Bad but better than Off The Wall if I had to do a shootout of MJ albums.
