Reviews (page 6 of 14)
definitely a classic. Weird pop culture icon but lots of great bangers on here. Wanna be Startin' Somethin' immediately hooks you. Beat It, Billie Jean and Thriller are all too iconic and pervasive in culture to ignore. Human Nature and P.Y.T. are great deeper cuts. I prefer off the wall as an album but this album is pretty undeniable.
I was raised in a cult, and Michael Jackson was one of the few secular music artists I was allowed to listen to. I didn't own this album, but considering 7 of the 9 songs were released as singles, I might as well have. I'm not sure how I actually feel about the album. Nearly 50 years later, Beat it, Thriller, Billie Jean, and Wanna Be Starting Something are still catchy in the best way. If I'm not mistaken, this is still the best selling album of all time, and with the way music is consumed now it will likely hold that record for the rest of time. How can you not give that a 5 star rating?
What @boopidoo said. But also have nostalgia on my side. One of the most influential albums of my life.
Der Klassiker ... zeitlos ...
Favorite Track: Beat It
If you can’t enjoy pyt cuz it has the word young in it I feel so sorry for you
Just makes me sad really. Especially the photograph of the perfect looking human on the cover. The album is perfection, but it'll never be seen like that again.
Absolutely incredible. Had to shatter the world up on release. Collabs, funk, pop, energy, had it all
The best album of all time, in my opinion.
If any album deserves to be on this list, it's this one. If not for the music, then at least for its cultural impact. Luckily the music is also outstanding.
5 star all day long maybe even a 6!! He wasn’t known as the king of pop for no reason!!
When I was a kid, I thought this was a greatest hits album. In a way it is, which is just an unreal achievement. Can’t think of anyone else who managed something like this.
A classic through and through.
You know an album is exceptional when the weakest song is the one with Paul McCartney
The only thing that could keep this album from being perfect is an uncomfortable spoken word argument between Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney. EDIT: fuck
It's a banger
i had already reviewed this album, and it's an absolute banger - only 9 songs on the whole album, but when 4 of those songs become absolute classics, you know it's got staying power. unique, creative, fun, and dancy.
I mean… is it anything else?
Masterclass. 5/5
What’s there to say? A game changer and a classic.
Milestone log 1: Day 100! I was walking home in the dark tonight and by god. I was actually fucking feeling myself to this. Got the jig in my step and everything. 10/10 you have to listen to thriller (the song) walking in the dark. Also, PLEASE learn to separate the art from the artist. You look so stupid.
It’s not actually my type of thing but it’s undeniably packed back to back with massive songs, to the point that for most people it would be a best of album. Would give it 4.5 just because I wouldn’t personally put it on but I’ll be generous and go 5.
When this was out, Albania was like North Korea now. Glad to hear it.
idk what to tell you. it’s michael jackson
An album I think everyone should listen to…truly a pop culture classic
Banger. Don’t even need to relisten
You’re a vegetableeee
An excellent album from top to bottom for a truly talented artist.
Yep...this is still one of the greatest.
Still a great album, though with some cringe-worthy songs. Not sure what MJ and Paul were thinking on THE GIRL IS MINE. And THE LADY IN MY LIFE was not much better. I think the title song, THRILLER, benefited from the video. But overall an impressive album.
When you have four all-time songs, it is a 5.
One of the greatest pop records of all time, and it's not even MJ's best record.
„Thriller“, „Bilie Jean“ und „Beat It“ - sensationelles Album eines unverbrauchten und kraftvollen Michael. Das Album ist aber auch sonst in sich schlüssig und entwickelt die Popmusik Anfang der 80er in eine neue Sphäre. Auch für den nich Michael Fan, gibt es kaum Gründe das Album nicht Top zu bewerten … vielleicht ist „P.Y.T.“ Pretty young Thing - ist vielleicht ehrlicher als viele 1982 dachten. 😉
Jesus and God. A Pop Bible in living memory. I was gonna list standouts but I realized it was the tracklist. This isn’t blind worship, this is a first time full listen to what has been a collection of iconic singles to me my whole life. Hard to escape his influence so how can I pass judgement? Can’t fuck with a guy who pulled in Van Halen real quick. Incredible record.
What am I supposed to say. I can’t find a damn thing wrong with it.
A BOP. Even better than I was expecting. I just GET IT.
Best album of all time!
There is good reason this album is iconic. Every track rocks…yes, MJ is magnetic, but the craft of the production and sound is all Quincy. One of the best.
This is iconic album. Not a huge Michael fan but this is a great album.
Wanna Be Start Something Thriller Beat It Billie Jean Human Nature PYT 6 huge tracks and 1 horrible duet
A pretty flawless album. 80s maximalism at its best.
Just an insanely good album from start to finish. What a legendary album.
One if the best selling albums of all time for a reason.
Even the worst song on this album (you know the one) is still highly entertaining. One could only imagine if that song was dropped in favor of the song that was supposed to be on this album, Japanese band YMO's "Behind The Mask". Either track they went with, this album is deeply weird, through and through. Obviously he didn't write it but it's permeated with MJ's odd sense of humor. From Vincent Price's "grizzly ghouls from every tomb" monologue to the random "YEE HAW!" exclamation during the pinnacle of the firey "Wanna Be Startin Somethin" to Macca & Michael's spoken word exchange on the hokey, antiquated, but hilarious "The Girl is Mine", this album is a classic because it's dripping with personality. Don't get me wrong, Quincy and company brought it hard here but there were plenty of raucous boogie-funk albums in 1982 but only one had "the funk of 40,000 years!!!!" on it. Add in the drama of "Billy Jean", the confrontational "Beat It", euphoric "Human Nature", and dancefloor-ready "P.Y.T." and it's no wonder this is one of the best selling albums of all time. No amount of the spoken word bridge on "The Girl Is Mine" could get in this album's way.
Looking past the kitschy aspects and separating the art from the artist, this album was, is, and will always be a masterpiece.
There is zero doubt in my mind, not only based on numbers, but also from what you hear of his time as a musician, that Michael Jackson might be one of the most famous people to ever live. I don’t care about Taylor Swift or The Weeknd. “Michael Jackson famous” is a term that exists for a reason. Dude had people screaming and fainting just by showing up on stage. I mentioned in my review of Abbey Road that there is a list that I believe is exclusive to only the most culturally synonymous albums ever. Thriller might be the most prime and glowing example of what I’m talking about. I genuinely don’t know if I’ve ever heard an overtly negative thing said about this album. And if we are speaking about essential albums, that everyone should actually hear, this one is right near the top without a doubt in my mind. It’s kind of insane how there is not one song on this that isn’t iconic. But that’s just greatest selling album of all time material. This is also probably one of the most important R&B albums ever made. Because it encompasses so much of the genre, and many of its closely related brothers, while also transcending any time period and becoming cemented into the ethos of music. You wanna talk about putting your trust into a producer? Because even if Michael sang incredibly and wrote great lyrics, Quincy Jones is really what brought this all together. This is a labor of love in its purest form. You can feel the work that was put in. And the guests are amazing too. From EVH’s legendary guitar work to the fantastic Paul McCartney feature. Even if certain parts maybe don’t click with as well as others do, this is a pretty flawless record. I can’t pick one song and single it out as the sole bad one. There are no bad songs. MJ was a pretty special, and one of a kind person. He was someone who changed the way the world viewed famous people and figures in pop culture. And Thriller is arguably the King of Pop’s magnum opus, and finest creation. Rating: 9/10
despite the pretty weak paul mccartney song and "pretty young thing" not aging well conceptually, thriller-beat it-billie jean is an absolutely INSANE run of songs and "Wanna be starting something" is an all time grrat album opener. this album is widely regarded as the best album ever made and it doesn't crumble under that pressure/scrutiny. 5/5
King of Pop at his peak
5/5
Obra prima!
5 stars. Legendary artist
Album is a masterpiece, fusing pop and r&b. So many stand out songs - the B side especially.
Classic album, so good
5 stars, of course
Thriller was good
Ein Klassiker und jeder Titel ein Hit!!!
What is there to say. The soundtrack to my youth.
Some really solid stuff on here, even ignoring the rose-tinted lens of fame that nearly allows the album (and its monumental sales) to speak for itself. The music is crammed with little bits and bobs to keep the listener absolutely hooked. Take Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’, the opening track, as an example. There are constant little flourishes in the backing vocals, electronic drums, synthy bassline, and so on, all amounting to six minutes of pure musical excitement. It's incredibly engaging – addictively so. Imagine one of those heavily edited TikToks or YouTube Shorts, but in song form, and you'll understand where I'm coming from. But, unlike TikTok, this has some pretty darn good music. Baby Be Mine, P.Y.T., and Thriller (title track) are also distinctively engaging in the same way. Obviously Michael Jackson's voice is the star here, but even if you don't like his voice, there's plenty else to lap up. Jackson's voice is pretty cool on this album, though. A bit of an acquired taste for some because of his ultra-youthful, almost whiny timbre - but honestly, he makes it work really well here. We see a healthy mixture of ballads (The Lady in My Life, Human Nature, The Girl Is Mine), disco (Baby Be Mine, kinda Billie Jean), high-energy pop (Thriller, Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', P.Y.T), and a very poppy rendition of rock (Beat It). And for all of these, Jackson manages to find a reasonably convincing vocal while sticking to his "slot in random cool noises" guns. His breathy crooning in the ballads is probably the weakest his voice gets, and it's still pretty good. Also, to all of you saying The Girl Is Mine is cringey and that McCartney should stay out of Jackson's music: Yeah, nah. It's a fun-filled collab that's not meant to be taken seriously. Sort of the "Yellow Submarine" of the album. I dig it. 5/5 Key tracks: all of them! Reads like a greatest-hits record.
Proof that Quincy Jones is a god. I would have loved to have lived when this dropped. Timeless production
Track 4, Track 5, Track 6
I am surprised that so many hits (and also familiar songs) are only from this one album. Pretty amazing album, great jams, would recommend.
Separating the Art from the Artist this is an absolute pop masterpiece. Yeah there are a couple of duds on the album, (I’m Looking at you Paul McCartney) but that can be forgiven for how massive the rest of the album is. Won’t be to everyone’s tastes but you can’t deny Thriller is Era and genre defining.
Hard to not be able to give this a 5 - it is a classic - but it's weird when almost all the songs are hit.
I’d heard a lot of these before but was surprised how many bangers were back to back. After Thriller he doesn’t let up! Lots of fun little jams to fill the rest of the album, very solid.
Brilliant Michael Jackson album. His best
Real shame that he was a monster, because this is truly the perfect pop album.
Such a great album. Transcends time; an absolute classic. Will forever be played because of its contemporary, multifaceted production. Swoon-worthy, back to back hits. Gotta be in Top 100, if not, Top 250
So much fun. Upbeat energy the entire way through, so I’d only fault the work by pointing out its lack of depth. But that’s not the albums purpose. It fulfills it’s purpose—keep the beat up—very well.
Already listened to this morning and had no idea that this would be the suggest album. Stellar from start to finish.
Absolutely amazing really. Although ‘The Girl Is Mine’ is a perfect example of two people so successful they can’t tell each other an idea is a bit shit, so they have to commit to it, both thinking ‘eeeesh, wish we hadn’t gone with this’, both partly trying to sabotage it out of existence by adding more bad bits, but ultimately not having the conversation, so you get left with that. And SO many of the lyrics are totally nonsensical, made up words, ridiculous… I don’t really listen to MJ anymore because… ya know. Somehow… a 5 star album anyway.
Terecht legendarisch, zoveel bizar goede nummers. Doen die paar mindere niets aan af.
The iconic album!
sonically diverse & nevertheless coherent. nice blend of horns, synthesisers and funky guitars/basslines. everything falls into place perfectly, even songs that are bad as standalone singles, e.g. The Girl Is Mine. definitely one of the greatest pop records of all time.
Beat It is quite possibly the greatest guitar riff ever written, that song makes this album a 5 by default. But the rest of the album still slaps on top of that, so it's like a super ultra mega 5.
4.75 stars. An incredibly well produced album. Quincy Jones really did it on this one. Very progressive sound elements coming from 1982, with still a little bit of disco influence. So many great hits on here, even with more underrated tracks like "Lady In My Life" and "P.Y.T." "Girl is Mine" is pretty a goofy song, I don't know what woman would really be trying to choose between 24 year old MJ and 40 year old Paul McCartney, and them "arguing" softly in the song is laughable. But it's a very engaging listen, an excellent pop album, and at a tight 42 minutes its over before ya know it
Classic, how can an album have so many hits!
Der klssiker Toller Pop
Goes insanely hard but we already knew that. The Girl is Mine continues to move up the more I hear it. Paid specific attention to the guitar solo in Beat It and damn it is good. 9/10
What a classic!
No hace falta decir nada. Obra pluscuamperfecta. Escucha y disfrute ineludibles 9
Undeniably one of the best albums if not the best of the 80’s. An incredible performer and a powerful voice. The backing music compliments him nicely. King of pop music indeed.
Was one of the best pop albums back then and is still.
Vinilo, claro.
The Girl Is Mine (with Paul McCartney), Thriller, Beat it, Billie Jean.
I think almost every American has heard of half these songs. Very solid album. I always loved Billie Jean...no matter how many times it comes on the radio.
Fuck them kids, one of the greatest albums of all time.
Back to back hits for the vast majority of its runtime - Thriller/Beat It/Billie Jean is almost definitely the best three-track run in music history, and you’ve still got the incredible opener Wanna Be Startin’ Something, Baby Be Mine, and P.Y.T. The Girl is Mine is very cheesy and stands out as the weakest track on the album by far (I’m not too big on Human Nature either, though it’s inoffensive enough), but the high points really outweigh the lows here
Sooo good
The king of pop’s greatest album. The grooves are so great I don’t mind the longer track times.
That’s a 5.
The undeniable king of pop, Michael Jackson slays in his "Thriller" album. Every song on this album is a straight up hit.
One of the greatest albums of all time
Not a huge fan of 80s pop music, but this is undoubtedly one of the greatest pop albums of all time and it’s not just Thriller - Billie Jean trio. The album is well produced and has a number of classic songs, with Wanna Be Starting Something getting play in recent years
I was prepared to go into this with a neutral mindset. Yeah, it's the best-selling album of all time but let's forget that for a second. After all, I had never actually listened to entire thing from front to back. But when I checked out the track list, I realized that I already knew all but one song. Not only that, but seven out of the eight songs I knew were also massive hits. How can you can be neutral with all of that going on? There's really no other rating but five for this. The insane cultural impact, the ubiquitous nature of the songs - be it catching music videos on MTV, hearing it on CD or the radio, having my dad play it in the car through his iPod as I rode with him to work, or adding it to throwback Spotify playlists - are undeniable. They're great pop songs too, come on. I never really cared for MJ's early disco eras, but the marriage of disco with pop, rock, funk, and soul is, as they say, chef's kiss. The three biggest hits aren't even the best songs on this album. That recognition goes to Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', P.Y.T., or The Girl is Mine because yeah, I like song a lot. And while I prefer the edgier sound of Bad or even Dangerous, this album is indeed... very thrilling.
The lady in my life. En dat zijn nauwelijks lows te noemen, maar gewoon net niet mijn favorieten. FAVO: Alles, behalve dan misschien The Girl is mine en The lady in my life
Obviously a classic
If not the GOAT pop album, certainly in the conversation. 40 years later and half the album would be hit singles. Some weak spots but it feels weird to give Thriller anything less than 5 stars
Man his voice is just so insane, this album is CRAZY, has so many bangers
Expected to give this one 2 stars but I really liked it. Great example of the post disco pop r&b sound of the 80s. Many classics and some I never heard.
Separating Michael from his music, this album is top tier. This album has a six song streak of bangers, from "The Girl is Mine" to "P.Y.T." and I can't deny it's greatness. Thriller gets 5 stars.
Remember the day this came out. Billie Jean the tempo & structure crossed disco with rock. Superb album should it be the biggest selling album of all time? That’s subjective..
It’s got to be 5 stars when you find yourself dancing around the room without realising it. That is one of the reasons I love this generator. A classic and I even like the tracks everyone is naming as naff
5 stars! Although, "the girl is mine" hasn't aged well. Overall, Thriller is an all-time great. It's so good that you try not to think about his alleged child rape.
Yeah man... it's fucking Thriller, what else you're gonna do but give it 5 stars?
A Milestone - Pop, Rock and R&B
All the good MJ songs are on this album. And, for the most part, there are no “bad” tracks. He should have let Quincy keep writing his songs for him after this. Iconic.
Sometimes artists get so big, so iconic that they become a caricature and we forgot just how talented they are. Thriller is a world changing album. Its influence has spanned generations. The Thriller, Beat It, Billie JeN stretch is as good of a 3 song stretch as there is in any genre. It more than makes up for a less strong finish to the album. 9.3/10
Great from start to finish
Even the songs I had not heard before were bangers.
Not much to say about this immortal album that everyone and their mom loves. Thank you generator for giving me an excuse to listen to it on this fine Friday. Favourites are basically the whole album. Pretty much an automatic 5, simply great
Not every song on this album is a winner (the doggone girl is mine?), and MJ is problematic as a person. Then again, so was his whole life. But. This album stands out as a truly remarkable feat of pop music. Thriller alone secures its spot as a five, and then you throw in Wanna Be Startin’ Something, Beat It, and Billie Jean — it defies classification.
My first Michael Jackson album on here, so for the record we try to separate the art from the artist around here. It's honestly pretty impressive just how strong this is from top to bottom. It's really pop-y, I'm not even particularly a big fan of this era of music, and somehow it just pretty much all works. He's an incredibly talented musician. I don't think there's a whole lot for me to say about this that's additive, it's the highest selling album of all time for a reason. It also has probably the most famous three-song stretch on any album ever, with "Thriller", "Beat It", and "Billie Jean" all back-to-back-to-back on here. Add in a casual Paul McCartney appearance too, and this is very obviously a heavy-hitter. Favorite song: Billie Jean Other: Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', Baby Be Mine, The Girl Is Mine, Thriller, Beat It, Human Nature, P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing), The Lady in My Life 3/15/24
Me encanta este álbum!!
“Thriller,” “Beat It,” and “Billie Jean” might be the greatest 3 song run on any album I can think of. Absolute classic.
It’s literally Thriller
Absolutely brilliant. Remember getting this when it came out. One of the best artists of all time. Micheal was such a talent and was so mis-understood. A victim of manipulation and exploited by many.
Good
I don't even have to listen to this, automatic 5. My cousin had the album back in the 80s and I'm familiar with all the songs and loved the videos when MTV played videos! LOL
Classic, I love this album.
One of the great albums. So many hits. Five stars
Best album ever made
Songcraft and singcraft at an apex. Love call abd response, especially contradictory eg ‘don’t think twice!’ Mf Paul McCartney,(these boys dueling!) Vincent price, evh. On cursory relisten only the lady song remotely skippable.
Even the most beautiful things have a kernel of ugliness, in this case its the song The Girl is Mine.
MJs best album. Loved it start to finish
Nearly every song is a banger.
This is the first record I can remember from my childhood. Love the hits! 5/5
Great album, even though you already know the hits its very well mixed and interesting
I, like many people, remember where I was when I first heard this album. The crooners aren’t as good (Paul, just no) but everything else is so remarkable, it just doesn’t matter.
Legendary, in every way. We forgive geniuses their trespasses, don't we?
Thriller Beat It Billie Jean
Debatably for top 100 of all time. Several hit songs all throughout
An absolutely superb, career defining album. MJ may have had an interesting personal life and some questionable decisions, but his music was brilliant and this album sums that up. More like a Greatest Hits than an album, so many big tunes! Even the album tracks I didn't know (not many) were ace. A rare 5 star from me!
Remarkable
So many great songs, didn’t realise they were all in one album
Finally! An album that should be universally adored and loved by all. This album does what great music does and makes us feel - in this case joy.
Enjoy the beat but not so much for his voice. Too bad he was pedo.
Oh my fucking god, it's finally happened! I've landed my white whale! Untouchable. Flawless. Immaculate. The absolute pinnacle of musical success. This album is a juggernaut that could not, and still cannot, be defeated. It permeates every layer of our global pop culture consciousness and cemented MJ as THE greatest pop artist to do the damn thing, EVER. His legacy may be tarnished, controversial, questionable. But his talent is undeniable. This album is perfection top to bottom, through and through. It is the template and the foundation on which all pop music hereafter was built and imitates. Regardless of how you feel about Michael, this is a 5 star album. It is a soaring achievement and the single most glorious moment responsible for kickstarting the golden epoch of pop music through which we still live and breathe. Bow down, mere mortals, and pay tribute to our once shining King of Pop in recognition and thanks for his benevolent rulership of the airwaves.
I’m glad Michael Jackson is dead so I don’t have to choose between listening to this album and not giving money to a monster.
It’s still severely overrated and I don’t really listen to the tracks on Side A on their own much, but when you sit down and give it a full listen…saying it’s anything less than amazing and pure fun is just being pedantic. And that’s despite the fact that “The Girl Is Mine” is cringey as hell.
I try to save a 5 star for something that was truly transformative for me but this music has been in the background since I was born, who am I to say it wasn’t?
Iconic. Still so good. I don’t love the Paul McCartney song but everything else is a banger.
Sjukt bra inte en enda dålig låt
Classic with excellent songs
MJ has never been my favorite artist, and that’s ignoring the pedophilia. However, this is perhaps the epitome of essential listening. The influence of this album has been seen and written about over and over again for 40+ years.
Every song brings me back to third grade and MTV
My favorite artist. Loved every song❤️
This album dominated the early 80’s. 7 of the 9 songs were released as singles, and all 7 made top 10. It is the top selling album in the world. Helped drive the concept of “meaningful” (and big budget) music videos. Influential? Oh yeah. This is impeccably put together, every note a perfect. Everything grooves, the melodies are memorable, the hooks are perfect. There’s a reason this album dominated the world. It’s that good. That said, it’s pop. It’s not jazz, or classical, or even prog. It’s pop, but as good as pop gets. The only downside is the creepy factor of Michael Jackson, which didn’t really come hot until later. Easy 5
Classic...
Every song was amazing. Loved the music mix and instruments.
The GOATed album ever. Quincy Jones is a master producer, Van Halen on the riff is god's gracious 2nd coming to Earth.
No denying the greatness of this album.
Is there a more iconic album than Thriller? This was a childhood favorite, and it has most definitely stood the test of time for me. It doesn’t get more classic 80s than the Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean trio. And Human Nature and Pretty Young Thing are just so good. A lovely moonwalk back in time.
This album has always been a part of my life in some way, but I’ve never listened to it all front to back. What an absolute gem. Wasn’t ready for the Paul McCartney feature. This is going to be heavy in the rotation
PERFECTION
Greatest album of the '80s probably. Not much filler here at all except maybe the carousel song 🤣. This album forever changed music videos and defined an era. Vincent Price Eddie Van Halen and Paul McCartney all appeared on what chart-topping '80s album?
One of the best albums of all time. Quincy Jones, Eddie VanHalen, Sir Paul McCartney, and Toto stepping in to assist the king of pop was genius. Michael was weird and the charges against him later in life are deplorable. Neither of those things impact my opinion of the quality and impact of the Thriller album.
Still a bop after all these years
Alfa. Ez dump on disco/pop. Every song is a classic.
Regardless of what you believe about MJ, Thriller is generally tremendous by virtue of the hits alone. There were two songs I hadn’t heard before “Baby Be Mine” and “The Lady in My Life”. They’re certainly not highlights but are okay. “The Girl is Mine” has always been pretty stupid though.
It definitely suffers from over-familiarity, but it got played so much because it’s awesome. Everything from Off The Wall buffed to a high shine. It’s produced to within an inch of its life and still sounds spontaneous. Machine-tooled brilliance. Wanna Be Starting something is a guaranteed wedding floor-filler. The breakdown at the end with the chanted backing vocals is perfect. Baby Be Mine is the template for his sister’s entire career. The Macca duet? Cheesy as fuck and I don’t care for all the reasons Paul mentioned. Melodic bickering of the highest quality. A frothy palette cleanser with PYT, and then that run of all-time greats - after burying the mid album clunker that is Lady In My Life. Thriller: Great song, great video, Vincent Price… what’s not to like? Beat it is My Sharona on steroids, Billie Jean - if you heard it again for the first time - would blow your fucking mind. Did I mention I bloody love Human Nature too? Granted, it all tails off at the end, but it’s like the warm down after a Messi man of the match performance. You’ve already won, don’t humiliate the opposition. So all in all, quite good.
Listened Before? Y An all-time pop classic. MJ was incredible in his day, and this one may be his best effort beginning-to-end. I'm also of the age that I was fortunate enough to be paying attention when this was released so it was the soundtrack of part of my childhood. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'
It's a classic for a reason. The ultimate in catchy, no-skip record albums.
Always a great nostalgia trip… try to remember MJ for the talent he was and nothing else
I mean it’s Thriller. It practically solved pop music. Yeah it’s good as hell, shocker of the year. Best song: Billie Jean
Legend!
Hard to believe so many hits were on one album
Pop music at its best
Classic
I mean...what is there to say about this album? It's perfection. Favorite track: Billie Jean
Obviously one of the greatest albums of all time. My only gripe is the order of the songs - and the girl is mine is such a lame song lol but otherwise it's an album full of amazing songs and though I like Bad just a little more, Billie Jean is a top 10 song ever recorded. That bass line is so good. I love this album.
Brilliant album - not a bad song on it.
Would give it a 10 if possible
Great album, great musicians (Toto🥰)
Whoo-boy. Here’s the biggest selling album of all time. The juggernaut. I can’t deny that this comes with some conflicted feelings. Michael Jackson, the man, was very problematic. Yet, his shadow on the music industry is biggest, the largest, the most felt even today. I can’t imagine the number of pop albums that exist today because of this album. You can’t just erase that. The last time I listen to this album, I remember it feeling like a Michael Jackson greatest hits album, it was so chock full of signature songs. Let’s revisit. Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ - For some reason I always thought this album started with Beat It. Wow this thing is pretty dated. Still, Jackson’s voice just floats above everything, it’s so iconic. The vegetable line is bizarre. Oh man, mama say mama saw - this album is gonna be like watching the Wizard of Oz, a pop-culture reference every 30 seconds or so? 4/5 Baby Be Mine - peak late 70s early 80s funk sounds on this one. Horns wakka wakka sounds. I honestly don’t recognize this. This album isn’t really starting off as strong as I remember. Still, this is effortlessly good. Solid deep cut(?) 3/5 The Girl Is Mine - I know Beat It has Eddie Van Halen on it - I forgot how many guest appearances are on this album. MJ must have been the center of pop culture at this time. This sounds like every Billy Ocean song ever made. Saccharine pop perfection. The banter is pretty uncomfortable. Isn’t Paul McCartney like 50 by this time? Maybe 40s? They’re both chasing after the same chick? 4/5 Thriller - I have listened to this every Halloween since 1982. You probably have to. I should hate it, I should be sick of it, but it’s the greatest song Michael Jackson ever made. 5/5 Beat It - Thriller really kicks this album into high gear, because from here on out it’s just flat-out amazeballs pop songs. From the Tangerine Dream sample to ine of the greatest guitar riffs ever, to the elevated chorus to the heavy-breathing and guitar solo, any part of this song is instantly recognizable and iconic. 5/5 Billie Jean - I don’t know if I heard this or Beat It first, but it’s definitely my music video introduction to Michael Jackson. The videos are definitely part of the experience of this album. I immediately see the light up tiles under MJ’s feet. This is nostalgia-bait for me, as it takes me back to 9 or 10, staying up to midnight in my PJs to watch music videos on Saturday night. Nostalgia wins, although I think that bass-line, synths, the singing, might have pulled me through to appreciate the masterpiece that this is. Although I wonder if Michael Jackson has a child we don’t know about. 5/5 Human Nature - This has an ethereal nature to it. Very 80s but step up from the ballads on the first side. 4/5 PYT (Pretty Young Thing) - The last masterpiece on this album. Not quite at the level of the other ones. but still a legitimately great song. It feels trapped between the past and the future a bit. I hear a bit that reminds me of the 90s or even 00s Usher, but then a choice drags me back to the 70s. Still those choices are all inspired. 5/5 The Lady In My Life - This feels like a holdover from something. Strong 70s ballad vibe. My wife said “every song is great, except maybe the last one.” Seems about right. It’s fine. Just not at the level of the rest of the album. 2/5 Is there a greater pop album? Maybe Purple Rain? Saturday Night Fever soundtrack? Dangerously in Love? I guess I’ll find out when those albums come up on this list (they are on this list, right?) It is hard not to deny though, that this is the pinnacle of pop perfection. While dated, the re-listenability of this album is high. Of course a pop album is going to be of it’s time, that’s kind of the definition of a pop album. Michael Jackson’s vocals are absolutely timeless though. It some ways it causes a jarring juxtaposition. But the music is always in service to his voice. I don’t think I’ve ever appreciated how great a singer he was. And of course, we’re finally left with Michael Jackson himself. Ultimately, he was just a man. In his lifetime, he was Howard Hugh’s level eccentric, and would be consistently surrounded by sycophants his entire life. It was definitely a unique life. In some ways, it’s the first Truman Show, all lived in the open to be examined by everyone. He was a drug addict, which killed him, and possibly (shudder) a pedophile. This, of course, sent me down an internet rabbit hole. The truth is obscured by a train of scam artists, a brutal media circus, and Jackson being an absolute weirdo. Maybe? Maybe not? It’s hard to say. Did his abuse as a child begat more abuse? If so, it’s story as old as time. I wanna believe that Thriller predates all of that, because of the monument it is. In the end though, and this is happening to me over and over again, true genius sometimes creates true monstrousness. Like I said, major conflicted feelings about this one. Thriller is my first 5/5 on this journey.
I forgot how great this album is. One of the greatest of all time.
Album 304 of 1001 Michael Jackson - Thriller Rating : 5 / 5 Favorite Tracks : Beat It / Billie Jean / Wanna Be Starting Something What can I say about Thriller? It is an icon of a moment in the music world. Aside from feeling that 'Baby Be Mine' and "The Lady in My Life" are the weak tracks, not much that I can pan about this album. It is one of those albums that takes me back to that time. It just puts you there. Good or bad.

Michael Jackson has an unparalleled voice, and Quincy Jones is an unparalleled producer. It’s a 5.
Damn is this a great album and the best selling album of all time for a reason. What more can be said.
Classic
My first album!
Amazing! I just love his vocals.
Amazing album. Don't vibe with the pedo side of him tho
Easiest five stars so far on this list. I believe that everybody knows songs from this album and that alone deserve praise. Legacy.
Love MJ. Love this album. I don't think I've ever heard track 2 before. I looooove it. Dang this album is PACKED with MJ's heavy hitters. Track 7 is so chill. I'm obsessed. 5/5 Obviously
Perfection
Would rate it 6 out of 5. One of the best albums ever released.
Such good rythm! You MUST move...
among the greatest pop albums of all time. an almost perfect run, with the only lackluster song being the ''girl is mine''.
Classic Album, full of hits, love a McCartney feature
Vinilo, claro.
This 42 minutes goes harder than most
So many hits. Such variety. Michael Jackson was super creative at this time. I also love the Eddie Van Halen uncredited solo on Beat It. I could do without the cheesy duet with McCartney but it is still a 5.
I mean i think i'm forced to give this a 5 Every song is just great man.
Ope
Iconic album, regardless of what you think of MJ.
Letteste 5/5 hittil. Bare bangers.
Qué se puede añadir. 5/5

It's the greatest pop album ever produced and one of the most successful and popular albums ever made. It's exceptionally well made and has tons of hits. It deserves a 5.
Thriller is a Classic and shows MJ's brilliance in choreography and creativity. He is the GOAT for sure holding the record for the best selling album of all time and 8 Grammy awards in 1984. No one moves like he does; truly a creative genius. He is msised! The only song I don't think we up to par with all the others on this album was the last one. Nonetheless.....a home run of all time.
Even though I enjoyed the rest of the album less than some people would, the Thriller-Beat It-Billie Jean run and his beautiful voice easily makes me give a five.
Astonishingly well put together. Michael Jackson managed to make a perfect record front to back.
Genius when released. Improved with hindsight.
Come on. Do we really have to talk about the rating on this? Regardless if you like the music or the artist or the genre or anything about this album. the cultural impact and longevity of it's influence ... it has to be a 5 out of 5.
Lots of incredible songs
bro…truly a perfect album in a every way. not a single crack or blemish to be found. one of the few albums deserving of a solid five gold stars.
I mean. No skips. 4 of the best 50 or 100 pop songs of all time.
Michael Jackson Thriller. What can you say? There were solid reasons that this album was the best selling album of all time for a good long while. Top notch Quincy Jones production. R&B, Dance, Pop, and Rock all well represented. "Thriller", the track is still magic to the ears after 41 years.
Awesome
Classic album - one of the best of all time in R&B and Pop
Owned it. Millions of words have been written on Michael and his career. Wish he hadn’t done the icky plastic surgery obsession. Still creeps me out. Personally, I lived just east of Gary in South Bend, Indiana in the early sixties. As schoolchildren, would ride through the Gary area in school busses on our way to field trips in Chicago. The sky over the Gary area was rust red and felt like grapefruit juice spray— pure nitric and sulfuric acid in Gary’s air from untreated steel-making emissions. It’s a wonder anyone would have enough lung tissue left after living there (like the Jackson family) to pursue a vocal career. (I returned to Gary on a photographic field trip in 2012. The larger limestone buildings were still accessible, but barely, by then. I heard the town has finally demolished much of the downtown since). Back then, cars rusted from the top down, and aluminum-sided houses corroded from the acidic air pollution. Then there’s the case study of family life that the Jacksons had. In the entertainment business no less; another ton of words written. Sigh. The music from this album is still regularly rotated on radio. And “Thriller” is a Halloween staple. Still top-quality musical arrangements and Michael had unmistakably genuine talent. Too bad about the other icky stuff of his life. The fact that Jacksons lived anywhere near Gary at the time of pure acid air and thrived vocally is a minor miracle that seems overlooked in the millions of words others have written about Michael and his family. Definitely a worthy selection.
блять, ну это невозможно оценить это то, что я слушал с детства, что слушали мои родители, что слушали кажется ВСЕ Триллер и Билли Джин - классика музыкальной истории алкоальбом: Thriller Martini (реальный коктейль)
Awful Paul McCartney duet - a creamy slice of cringey shitcake Thriller/Beat It/Billie Jean back to back... only ever going to be 5*
It’s thriller. This one should be sent into space for posterity
Stone cold classic, absolutely undeniable
I'm not mad that this is the bestselling album of all time.
Setting aside the monstrous behavior later in his life, this album remains a masterpiece. MJs voice is silky smooth and effortlessly cool but energetic. The lyrics are generally catchy and accessible but abstract enough to be interesting (though the girl is mine falls very, very short on that front -- what a waste of two great talents). Quincy Jones' production on this album has stood the test of time. The beats are laid-back but propulsive and make me want to dance. Not all of the 8 top ten hits remain bops but Billie Jean, Human Nature, and PYT could still be on my playlist.
Awesom!
What else can you say other than that this is one of the greatest records of all time. Iconic Michael Jackson making history. Practically a ”Best of” in one album. A timeless piece. Easy 5 stars.
It's the best selling album of all time...if you don't think this album rocks, you're either a. Lying or b. Don't have a pulse.
PYT is my favorite MJ song. Didn’t get around to listening but I’ve heard most of it.
Incredible album
Nostalgia!
This is a banger, and I know bangers!
Obviously heard most of the songs before but I don't remember hearing Baby Be Mine.....which was a BANGER.
Stark
Great
I love mj and this is one of the best. baby be mine is a banger i hadnt heard before the paul mccartney one was weird doe
Alltime Classic
3rd Michael Jackson album on the list. Best of them tbh.
i think i hauve covid
you're in front of michael jackson and paul mccartney and they won't stop calling you a DOGGONE GIRL
Once I took a 20 minute cab ride and the song Thriller played the entire time, but it kept skipping around and played the spoken word bit for almost fifteen minutes straight. The cab driver didn't react at all. Just the two of us listening to Vincent Price chopped and screwed.
Not a single bad or lukewarm song
Finns en anledning till att det här är den bäst säljande skivan genom alla tider. En av de bästa skivor som gjorts.
The numbers speak for themselves; this is the best album of all time. How can an album include hits like Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean, break norms, revolutionise the video market and change music history and not be the best album of all time? Michael Jackson made HIStory with this one. He and his effect on the world can never be forgotten or erased no matter how much people try to.
Great pop, with funk and rock influences
Classic
I mean, it's Thriller. I knew most of these but I was actually surprised by the other songs here that I hadn't heard before. This is exactly what I associate with 80s pop and overall, it's quite good. Biggest surprise for me was Baby Be Mine.
A really good album, Michael Jackson has a lot of really good songs. I love Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean.
Honestly a great album. Always a great time
An easy five-star rating. It doesn't get much more iconic than this.
What a juggernaut of an album. This has to be one of the highest rated albums of all-time. What a fun & nostalgic listen. Yes, we've got the big singles on here, but my favorites are The Girl Is Mine with Paul McCartney & Human Nature. Easily a perfect 5 stars.
one of the best albums EVER... ever...
Good
This is an undeniable masterpiece. The songs, the arrangement, the production. Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones together mad the best pop-funk album of all time.
I mean yeah this is just widely considered one of the greatest albums of all time and it deserves that praise. Great legendary album top to bottom!
This one just has to be five stars based on Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, PYT, Wanna Be Starting Somethin. Just stacked!
Zazzy and addicting.
This is probably the best pop album ever
yeah this is 5 stars what did you expect
The greatest album ever made. Absolute masterpiece from Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones from start to finish. In a weird way (and in my opinion) the best songs here aren't the hits. "Baby Be Mine" and "The Lady in my Life" are way better than "Billie Jean" and "Beat It". 11/10.
What more can you say about this thing? One of the greatest pop albums of all time.
MJ is always amazing!!
"Thriller" is the sixth studio album by American singer and songwriter Michael Jackson. The album was produced by Quincy Jones and was a mix of pop, post-disco, rock, funk and R&B. Jackson wanted to create an album where every song was a killer. Well, he came pretty close at least commercially with seven of the nine songs on the album reaching the US top ten. The album was #1 for 37 non-consecutive in the US, has sold over 70 million copies worldwide and won eight Grammy's. It had widespread critical acclaim and, in 2008, was inducted to the National Recording Registry for its artistic significance. The album starts out with the funky "Want to Be Startin' Somethin'." A quick beat, bass and guitar. There's horns. Jackson's high tenor working really well with the backing female vocals. The memorable ending with the "Mama-say mama-sah ma-ma--coo-sah" sample from Manu Dibango's "Soul Makossa." Some legalities happened there. I guess I have to mention the duet with Paul McCartney and "The Girl is Mine." There, I did it. The first side ends with "Thriller." Everything about this song was an event. The video. Did you see the video? Where did you see the video? The song itself is weird and great with doors slamming, werewolves howling and, of course, Vincent Price. The song is catchy and danceable. The second side starts out rockin' with "Beat It." The guitar, the drums and Jackson singing about anti-gang violence with the video a West-Side story homage. Eddie Van Halen with a very brief solo spot. A song Jackson wrote along the next one, the highlight of the album in my opinion, "Billie Jean." The synth melody, the jingly guitar, the funk. Actually, a very dark song lyrically as it's about an obsessive fan who alleges Jackson fathered her child. A very decent groovy song is "P.Y.T. (Pretty Thing)." A clean, pop song. Maybe, the most danceable song on the album. I had no idea what to write about this album so it eventually came to me. The production and overall sound quality is great. There are three absolute killer songs in "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," " Beat It," and "Billie Jean." Some of the best songs ever in the pop, dance and R&B category. "Thriller" is a fun novelty song. OK. I had trouble, knowing what we know now about Jackson's personal life, with some of the romantic ballads and the duet is just silly. There is a darker edge to some of the lyrics that I didn't get as 14-year old when it came out. That alone made this is an interesting re-listen. Recommendations/non-reommendations - I think everyone knows where they stand on this album but maybe listen to it differently next time.
How has anyone NOT heard this album?
i meaaan... he's just the GOAT
Maschine: Moondrop Variations Mische: Referenz Musik: Es ist fucking T-H-R-I-L-L-E-R Meine Wertung: 5/5
Five star album then, five star album now
Easily five star album. Even the "deep cuts" are popular. Everyone had this album or at least heard it. Pretty Young Things hits a little differently now but it's still filled with bangers.
Thrilled to listen to this album
Questionable man; stonking album. I already new this was getting a 5 before it started playing.
I mean, it's basically a Greatest Hits album for any other artist. 5/5
Great
Okay, it’s Michael Jackson… I don’t even know how to objectively rate this album, because he’s such a legend, and so many of the songs on the album were already so familiar to me. Okay, I’m just gonna unashamedly give it a 5. Only song that’s bad is The Girl is Mine, “The Doggone Girl is Mine”, how corny is that line… actually the whole song was like a bowl of corn flakes. But besides that song, I love MJ’s music, always have.
Ok, I didn't want to rate this 5 stars initially just because it was Michael Jackson's Thriller. I made an assumption that I'm not into pop and I won't like this that much. I was wrong. Every song but PYT is a really good, catchy piece of art. If I had never heard MJ before, and I was alone when this album was released, it would have blown me away. I'm adding a quote from the wiki to my review because it's how I feel. "commercial success has since overshadowed Jackson's artistic accomplishments on Thriller, and that's a pity." This album suffers from being overplayed, but it shouldn't take away from the brilliant songwriting or Michael's vocal prowess. I could easily write a review for each individual song, but I think that's enough. 9.5/10
What a classic album! How can you look past Thriller as one of the all time great albums? There are only 2 songs on the 9 track album that wasn't a hit single, which I think the only artist in recent times to really only come close is probably Taylor Swift. Truly such an iconic piece of music history, it's hard to think of only one best song! Best: Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean Worst: The Lady in My Life
Kæmpe classic jo
Bangers
Great album. Banger after banger. Michael Jackson really nailed it with one. I hope that he’s up on that big stage in the sky moon walking and hee heeing his heart out. We miss you Michael.
I've always figured I'd find this overrated. I did. It's still 5 stars cmon.
I don't know why I was waffling between a 4 and 5, this is fantastic through and through. I appreciate Billie Jean a lot more now that I'm older.
Easy 5 🐐
A Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' 4 Baby Be Mine 5 The Girl Is Mine (with Paul McCartney) 4 Thriller 5 Beat It 4 Billie Jean 5 Human Nature 3 P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) 4 The Lady in My Life 5 My Aunt Kathy just got a hip replacement and I don't think it's an overreaction to say this would be a very hazardous listen for her right now. Maybe even lethal.
thriller’s a fucking classic!! hit after hit!!
The Girl is Mine is boring and blah, but the rest of the album is all bangers all the time.
Just hit after hit with this one, straight thrillers, no fillers. Hee hee!
It's Jackson, properly iconic album some great songs. Not sure I've ever listened end to end before and I don't regret it now having done so.
There’s a reason this album is as iconic as it is!
Masterpiece.
One of the, if not the greatest, pop albums of all time! I loved every song on this album! Michael Jackson is the GOAT!
i mean it’s thriller. genius through and through
ja obvi banger
he was the prince of pop for a reason
The Girl is Mine is the only song I truly dislike on this album, but the cringe wasn't strong enough for me to take a star off. The rest of the album is legendary for a reason.
Honestly didn't realize how many hits were on this album! Very surprised, and it is clearly an album that has loved up to its hype.
Guapísimo
ONE OF MY FAVORITE ALBUMS OF ALL TIME! BEEN ON REPEAT SINCE THE FIRST TIME I LISTENED AS A YOUTH! My favorite Quincy Jones project and my favorite Michael Jackson album
Banger
An album that I would take with me to a desert island ;-)
Really good album
A classic!
Appropriate for the time of year. Thriller->Beat It ->Billie Jean is a crazy 3 song stretch and probably the most well known one.
Chill even with headache
