Reviews (page 12 of 14)
This album has some mammoth hits so I was interested in the rest of the album. The hits are bangers and rightly so (Bohemian Rhapsody and You're my best friend). The other tracks are OK, nothing in particular stood out but Queens sound is unique.
I really wanted to love this album but I enjoyed a solid 3 songs.
Well, a classic. I'm glad i sat down and gave it a listen, now I can put it away and hop on something else. Not my stuff but I can't give any less than 3. The impact they had is too big to ignore, and one can't deny the quality of the songs and the fantastic instrumentals in this album.
A mix of hard rock and music hall that ends up as over-the-top as that implies. When it works, you get one of the best rock songs ever in "Bohemian Rhapsody." Musically, only the part-doom metal, part-a capella "The Prophet's Song" comes close to matching the creativity there. But another key is that it has a good mix of serious and silly. Too many songs here lean too far in one of those directions and end up sounding like novelty tracks or sappy ballads. The guitar work is good, but often these goofy solos pop up and ruin the flow of the song. "I'm in Love With My Car" is much-maligned but really isn't any sillier than the other songs here, it's just more straightforward. It's hard for me to hate this because Mercury is an incredible vocalist and the playing is impressive. But I do wish there was more of the quality of "Bohemian Rhapsody," which is obviously easier said than done.
This doesn’t gel for me. It’s a bunch of mildly unhinged songs written by some eccentrics (and Roger Taylor) but it’s all over the place). The hits are great though. I’ll stick with the Greatest Hits package
A solid effort. Obviously this has that one song, and the album as a whole sometimes feels like that one song and a collection of some others, but it's more than that. I'm saying it is good, but not my favorite of theirs. 3.5/5
Yup, a song at a time it's a tour de force masterpiece, and I will never get tired of Bohemian Rhapsody and I love Brian Mayes' guitar as another voice. So why a 3? The albums hits are great and you hear them all the time. I get very tired of the soaring choral arrangements on song after song sounding more like an exquisite novelty album than something I want to listen to end to end. Humbug.
Yeah, still good -
Eh.. Forventet litt mer.
Ganske bra egentlig. Den bohemian rhapsody låten var jo litt kul. 3/5
Some parts of this were great, other parts not so much "You call me sweet like I'm some kind of cheese" ???? Why was The Prophet's Song so long. Found it quite grating unfortunately. I have absolutely no idea how to rate this. Obviously this album was deeply impactful culturally, but I wonder how much of that was down to a few standouts - would this album still be on this list if 8 of the 12 songs were changed? A cynic would say probably Songs added to playlist: - You're My Best Friend - Seaside Rendezvous - Love Of My Life - Good Company - Bohemian Rhapsody
Another "not the album I would've chosen by this band" selections
I think this album is getting a lot of votes for “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and not the actual album. I’m not trying to be a contrarian but- half of these songs are in that Vaudeville/English music hall/“When I’m 64” style that I will probably never enjoy. “The Prophet’s Song” is an interminable bore. The rock songs are even a little boring by Queen standards. Don’t get me wrong- they’re theatrical and operatic, but they aren’t that interesting. The only strong songs on this record are “You’re My Best Friend,” “Death on Two Legs,” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The rest you will forget before the record is over. THREE STARS
Pretty cool. Standout tracks: You're My Best Friend, Love Of My Life, Bohemian Rhapsody.
I don’t think anyone can deny the influence of Queen, but this really isn’t my vibe. Freddie’s voice is brilliant, and he puts it through different operatic shapes and sounds. I just don’t like the prog aspect of this album. The songs run into each other, which is in danger of being too clever, and the op and the vocal warm-up halfway through the Prophet Song leave me a bit cold. But, I could list worse operas, frankly. Of course this has the incomparable Bohemian Rhapsody on it and for that reason it deserves to be list, and the single thread that morphs and moulds throughout each track is a neat touch. I prefer 80s soft rock Queen to 70s prog posturing Queen, but there is a fair bit to enjoy on this album.
A fun dramatic album! I only added the 2 famous ones that I knew though
started off hot, ended up being decent. worth existing fs
Not my favourite album. Some great songs.
Faut que ça te tente.
Some classics, not my favourite
действительно хороший, и возможно заслуживает оценку повыше, но это не то что я могла бы слушать каждый день
Favourite track: Bohemian Rhapsody
3 stars I wanted to hate on it, and some parts of it weren’t great. But I was digging it more than I thought. “Bohemia Rhapsody” is a bonafide classic, but the album has to be more than that and it is. But not so much more.
Obviously Bohemian Rhapsody took on another life and You’re My Best Friend has been used in every mid 2000s movie soundtrack but the album cuts rarely work for me. Queen always have weird interstitial songs threaded between monster hits, and the project suffers from that
Some really good stuff and some stuff that is just okay.
Fascinating, theatrical, occasionally grating, sometimes brilliant.
Morsom musikk. Treffer ikke helt, litt for teatralsk for min smak. Men love of my life, bohemian og et par andre perler. 3/6
I don't know. Obviously it has its moments but it's all a bit silly.
Stylistically diverse for sure. A few of their big hits on here, and I think Bohemian Rhapsody is pretty inline with the tone of the rest of the album. I think I like some of the deeper cuts a bit more than the hits. Very heavy on the vocal harmonies. Brian May's guitar playing is always solid, and his tone is often very trebly.
besides the obvious bangers i find this a little underwhelming
Got that one song you all know, they are fine.
A few massive hits. Otherwise average. 3.5
93/1089 Death On Two Legs is a good opener, i really enjoyed that as the way to intro the album. I’m In Love With My Car is… a choice. You’re My Best Friend is nice but it’s been a bit ruined by it being overused in adverts etc i think this album suffers from a case of “single so good, the rest of the album just can’t quite compare” Bohemian Rhapsody is just *too* iconic and interesting that the other songs feel underwhelming by comparison faves: BR of course, The Prophet’s Song, Death On Two Legs least faves: I’m In Love With My Car, Seaside Rendezvous, Sweet Lady 69/100
Great stuff. I was surprised by Roger Taylor's vocals.
Some good songs, some weird songs. I liked the sound of the majority of the album, but I realized that it’s probably a familiarity thing. If I had never heard Queen before in my life, I don’t know if I really would’ve liked it. Also the first song scared Baker
Appropriate title. Didn’t understand what was going on most of the time, but it sure was dramatic.
The hits are great and there was a lot more musical variety that I assumed. Very much a product of the time, Led Zepplin, Rush, Sgt Peppers etc heard in there. But also a little cheesy in places
I haven’t heard this record since I was a kid. A lot weirder than I remembered. Hurts the album a bit that Bohemian Rhapsody is so over played as it takes away the highlight
Honestly without bohemian rhapsody and you're my best friend, this is a two star album, little too indulgent. I'm in love with my car and prophets song are straight up dumb songs.
I had more fun with this one than Sheer Heart Attack, but I still just don’t like Queen. If I never hear Bohemian Rhapsody it’ll be too soon.
I like this album. It reminds me of the renaissance festival. Your my best friend is a great song so is Lazing on a Sunday afternoon, not to be confused with Small Faces Lazy Sunday. Which is a great song too.
Fun variety, I've realized over time that I find Queen consistently enjoyable but rarely find them mindblowingly amazing
The album is weird mixture of prog, hard rock and music hall numbers and The Queen as a band has a really unique sound that cant be mistaken as any other. Not my playlist stuff, but have to give some respect to such ambitious record.
So this is mixed really well and has super high-production values, I also really love Freddy Mercury's voice. But! Most of this isn't my jam, as it feels all over the place and lacking cohesion. Fave tracks "You're my best friend" and "Bohemian Rhapsody".
100/1001 Queen - A Night At The Opera Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ❓ Having an album that contains Bohemian Rhapsody, You're My Best Friend and Love of My Life in theory should be an all timer, however the album tracks on here are plain old woeful - Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon, I'm In Love with My Car, Seaside Rendezvous. I'm sure that my tolerance for the woeful tracks have worsened since listening to this regularly as a teenager, but yeah an album of real highs and real lows. Mid.
A *purposely* ridiculous sound is still ridiculous, y’know? What is there to say when the best song on an album (“Bohemian Rhapsody,” naturally) is essentially a (fun, good) novelty song? A little bit goes a long, long way.
I have heard the hits of this album on classic rock radio. Apart from those 3 or 4 songs I had never heard the rest of this album. I love the production and enjoy that the band was going for it so much on this album.
Batshit crazy. Have to admire the ambition and what they were able to achieve with the tech available to them, but some of the more novelty stuff I don't think I'd want to hear again. Bits of it are great, though.
Queen is not a band I've every real cared or thought much about. Their brand of theatrical, over the top, operatic, rock never appealed to me much. I like my rock music more sleezy and unpolished. Add to that that I tend to ignore overplayed "classic hits" that I tend to hear all the time whether I want to or not and this is a band I've ignored. All of that said, there are some bangers on this album. The best song here is '39, which is stripped down and doesn't even really sound like Queen. I'll give it 3/5 stars. Not my favorite, but solid.
Every individual member of Queen was great but I never want to listen to what they did together, except for a small number of tracks. One of which, I'm In Love With My Car, is on ANATO. However, here we have one of the greatest live bands of all time, reaching a plateau they would sustain for 20 years. So what do I know?
I honestly wish I could give this album more than 3 stars, and honestly, I probably just wasn't feeling it at the time. But, what I've realized about Queen in two albums now is that their hits are top-of-the-chart near perfection good. Obviously this album has "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "You're My Best Friend" which the former alone puts this one in the 'worthy' category in terms of cultural impact and musical quality/influence. I mean we have Freddie Mercury vocals and Brian May on guitar. What's not to love? Yet, I just couldn't get into most of this. It was the same with the other Queen album I've been assigned. It's just a bit too weird, too all over the place to really find it's footing for me. I did enjoy about half of it, but some other tracks I couldn't wait to end.
It's mostly "the Bohemian Rhapsody album", the other songs didn't really have the same spark, they sort of felt like I should like them more than I did but the playful Queen rock-operaticness wasn't enough for real captivation, '39 is a nice song, though Still nice, still interesting and varied, it's on the 4/5 borderline
this is an extremely generous three
Absolutely bonkers. This album is all over the place. I can't believe it's as revered amongst the mainstream as it is. The hits are fantastic but vastly different to the rest of the album. Not a negative take but not what I was expecting!
I'm pretty hot and cold on this album tbh... I don't think of Brian May often, but his guitar tone has a distinctiveness to it. Unmistakable out of the gate on Death on Two Legs. Extremely solid intro track. I'm In Love With My Car feels a bit out of place -- more like a Poison song in tone, though May's guitar play is solid enough. You're My Best Friend is a great track in isolation. Sweet Lady is a solid muscular jam. Love Of My Life is also a fantastic display of their virtuouso abilities -- beautiful. An obviously, Bohemian Rhapsody is the show stealer and an all time classic. But while this album has some rippers, it is incredibly inconsistent IMO. So for that I give this a 3 / 5.
The queeniest of Queen albums I can imagine. This just sounded exactly like I expected it to compared to Sheer Heart Attack. Definitely did not like it as much. I saw a list the other day that said Bohemian Rhapsody is the greatest rock song of all time, I disagree.
I know Queen are a great band but I just can’t get into them it’s like a rock block for me . I have listened to this album a couple of times before think songs go from sublime to ridiculous
It's got Bohemian Rhapsody and You're My Best Friend but also a bunch of filler, '39 is underrated though. I'm not a fan of Queen's albums that much.
Wouldn’t listen to this album in its own but I think BR is such an epic piece of music that it carries the album up to a 3.
Songs: You're My Best Friend, Bohemian Rhapsody
you know, i get why people like them but it was just ok for me. i wish i could 2.5 it
I've realised that I don't actually like Queen albums. The singles on here are classics, but most of the rest is just novelty songs.
ok not my favourite queen mix.
pop rock
I really thought this might be the queen album I really enjoy. But no, a few great songs but all over the place in quality.
Apparently I’m a Top 40 Queen fan. I appreciate what they’re doing on this album, but just give me the hits and hold the rest please. With all due respect…
I like Queen.
Operatic hard rock. Bohemian Rhapsody obviously is the classic here. '39 and Good Company were two I was unfamiliar with that caught my ear.
solid tracks with some filler. I don't know how Love of My Life isn't one of their biggest hits bc it's just so good and full of drama and heartache. drama is what Queen does best
Really don't like Queen! Hate Brian May's guitar, which is weird as I quite liked it at the time. Way more eclectic than I'd have thought, but that's not necessarily a good thing. The mish-mash of styles means the album doesn't hand together as a cohesive whole. You're My Best Friend is the stand out for me: BR is just too familiar (again, loved this as a 10yo and was the song of choice coming back from rugby matches). Production goes up to 11; again, not great for me.
I listened to this - and all the Queen albums pressed at the time - in my adolescence years and absolutely jizzed over them. Listened a few years back and was surprised and a little downcast at how they had faded in my estimation. Lets see what this is like with another relisten... there are one or two zingers but the album is a bit all-over-the-place. The harmonies that work in BR kill the ompf of The Prophet, I dislike the sentiment of Keep Yourself Alive but the others are good or a bit of laugh. On my patented -100 to 100 rating scale - where zero is that okay film that you didn't realise you were watching for a second time until 15 minutes in - its 65
Low 3 best song: youre my best friend feels surprisingly mid 60s this, with the mock musical hall numbers etc. its patchy. some unbelievable stuff with the famous songs, but then theres also "im in love with my car". not really for me
I find Queen albums to be very inconsistent, but that is part of the fun of the listening experience here. I really don't like the hits on here, especially Love of my Life and Bohemian Rhapsody are incredibly overplayed. Besides the hits and the few cornball musical-esque tracks here, there are some good songs on here. Death on two legs and The Prophet's Song are great surprises for me on here. Queen can write and play some great tracks, but it's almost like they don't wanna do most of the time.
Don't care for queen. It's not experimental, just sounds orchestric and boring.
Ouais c’est bon mais j’suis pas vrm là
Bohemian Rhapsody is certainly one of the best songs of all time, but this album just feels like a constant struggle to find the band’s best sound
It's a bit disjointed with multiple vocalists/songwriters. I think it's better as a collection of singles than as an album. That being said, there are some all timers on here. 7/10
Det räcker liksom inte att en av världens bästa låtar är med om mycket av det andra är mellanmjölk.
How is it possible that every time I listen to a Queen deep cut song I find it unbearable? Nice album I guess, >70/100 at least but I don't feel giving it an exact score
i respect it but i do not like it
Kind of underwhelming outside of the hit singles.
This was great. Very interesting mix of sounds. I’d only heard a couple of these songs before and some of them should be a lot more popular. Really enjoyed this.
Outside of the two singles and '45, the album is just fine. Sometimes I wonder if Queen would've been better if they had taken the "less is more approach". May, for instance, feels more like a barrage of sound than meaningful notes. I'd sooner give it a 7/10 than 6/10, however I can't give it a 4/5.
Just not a big Queen fan. Contains two classics, but two good songs does not a classic album make. I give it a C+.
Such weird combo of songs. Some absolutely gems and also some odd duds.
Yep.
Real talk why would you put ‘You’re My Best Friend’ right after ‘I’m In Love With My Car’
Solid Queen album. Good diversity in the song styles and finishing with there most played song. Not bad
I'm not a Queen fan but this was not bad actually. Not much else to say about this project.
A couple of well known songs that I like, and some really weird stuff. Overall, meh.
I enjoyed this! It is maybe a bit too rock-y for me normally and there are some stinkers (seaside rendezvous I’m looking at you) + some (overplayed) greats (I’ll confess I tuned out when bohemian rhapsody played). It is really a 3.5 as I would listen to it again willingly but I’m not adding it to my library
You get the feeling that some albums are on here just because of one big single. Bohemian Rhapsody is obviously a classic, as is You're My Best Friend, but the rest pales into comparison. I don't enjoy the music hall variety performance side. Brian May is deservedly a guitar hero, but it's like all he can do is solo. Layers upon layers of production to cover up the fact that most of the songs just aren't that good. Just, JUST scrapes a 3.
Freddie is great. The songs for the most part are campy and not my thing.
*Queen’s 4th album. 1975. *Started out amazing in the first half, then got really noisy and bad in the second half (except for Bohemian Rhapsody). RATING - 7/10
Ok
Hits are great, and some other decent tunes but doesn’t blow me away
trots att ja stör mig på queen så va detta bra
I really like 2 of the songs, the rest are just ok.
Ist nice.
Well put together. They have such a recognizable sound. Bohemian rhapsody is just overplayed in my life, but it's a really good song
Definitely good walking music. Almost sounds like a vaudeville show. It just puts you in a good mood. Not sure if I'd play the whole album in my car though.
It’s hard to deny the musical talent of Freddie Mercury and Queen, and this album is a great example of that. The only personal problem I have is that my favorite parts of the album were when the band left the operatic sound and leaned more into the rock. A three feels blasphemous, especially when Bohemian Rhapsody is on the track list, but it’s where I’m ranking it.
This is not their best but it is damn good.
2 good songs and a load of cabaret doth not give'th you'th more than a 3(th). Even if one of the good songs is admittedly groundbreaking
This one grew on me a bit even though I'm not really into Bohemian Rhapsody. You're My Best Friend is a banger though, and kudos for the diss track.
And this children is why we needed punk rock. So, I know a few of these tunes. My wife is a Queen fan, so most of this I’ve heard before. It’s disjointed and musically a bit of a mess, although that, in this case, is livable with. It’s just symptomatic of the bloat that was so prevalent during the early to mid 70s. It’s not dreadful - there are much worse albums on this list- but it doesn’t really do much for me. And it’s worth noting that even Brian May can’t save that fuck awful dirge at the end from being boring as fuck.
I think Queen are probably a band that can just never live up to the hype. I heard this album in full seven years ago and it didn't stick with me outside the hits, and I expect the same thing here. Not to mention Bohemian Rhapsody is like, the most overplayed song in existence. Still a great record with great songs, mind you! Solid 7/10. Just not something I ever really feel the need to put on. Oh, God, my transition into a music snob is complete...
Queen is a real greatest hits band. There are great songs on this album but in my opinion they never really made a great album and this is no exception at all. It's uneven and there is a lot of filler that could be trimmed out. However, the great songs like Prophet's Song, Bohemian Rhapsody, and 39 are still great.
3- Stars (7/15)
Very listenable, slightly bombastic but some very good tracks worth a second listen.
I really liked “Death on Two Legs” and enjoyed “Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon” and “God Save the Queen” to a slightly lesser extent. Bohemian Rhapsody is still classic, too. The other tracks are an odd listen for me, though I’d imagine they make for a great live performance… with exception given to “‘39”…
not the best of queen. 3/5
This album is so fun. Like it was enjoyable to listen to and was energetic. I feel like it lacks cohesion, but Freddie Mercury has such range with his voice and performance.
I mean, sure, Bohemian Rhapsody, but honestly? This album is all over the place.
This was fine. I'm pretty on the fence with Queen but I know many, many people who adore them. This album did contain Bohemian Rhapsody which was introduced to me via Wayne's World and is a solid karaoke number and You're My Best Friend is pretty classic. Rating: 3
This is just a Queen compilation album with just a little bit of differences cause it was live haha.
This wasn't as bad as I expected. The first half is pretty good, with solid riffing and a few of proto-heavy songs. The piano ballad is cheesy and dull. Bohemian Rhapsody is a cheesy song, but it's a classic for a reason. Overall, a good album, although too bombastic for my tastes.
A bit of a tough album to judge. Queen is so over the top with their rock operas/musical ballads that almost ventures into early hair metal territory. However, you also get legendary songs like Bohemian Rhapsody and You're My Best Friend from it so it's not all bad. 6/10 (3/5)
I don't understand the hype tbh
Accidentally got this record in a vinyl subscription, but then after listening to it I wasn't mad I got it.
3.3 - first full Queen album now see why some say Freddie was such a great singer
I think all that matters is that it has Bohemian Rhapsody. That's enough to explain my opinion on this album. (For real though: I liked a lot of the ideas but yeah Bohemian Rhapsody all day, 8/10, 4/5 on this scale) (Update: It's good, but I feel like Bohemian Rhapsody shouldn't account for the fact that I don't recall the rest of the record besides the hits and maybe Prophet's Song. A 3 is more appropriate)
I somehow made it through life without ever listening to this album all the way through. Turns out that was OK.
Pretty decent album, has a few bangers like the obvious Bohemian Rhapsody.
Not really the biggest fan of Queen overall tbh. I didn't dislike the album, but I also didn't love it.
Mix of classics and some songs don't really care about
Bohemian Rhapsody is the obvious standout here, though the rest ain't bad.
Not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but not quite great either.
Je savais pas que Queen faisait du country. '39 m'a laissée surprise. Bohemian Rhapsody, un chef d'œuvre. Pu capab.
Death on two legs, I’m in love with my car, Sweet Lady. Mention spéciale à la balade ‘39!
Not the biggest fan
Some great songs but not one of their best albums
Freddie Mercury's voice and styling defines Queen, and puts the band in a league of its own amongst 70s pop and rock. That style and league just isn't for me. Bohemian Rhapsody is a f***ing masterpiece tho. Surprised by the variety on this one - there's prog amongst the glam rock, eg. Prophet's Song. This appeal to my Genesis-loving soul boosts my initial rating. 5/10 -> 3/5.
The epic highs (Bohemian Rhapsody) and lows (I'm In Love With My Car) of Queen
queen is so mid
Better than expected, I’ve had a grudge against Queen for a while now but it honestly was pretty good 3.2
I don’t think I’ve ever heard a band have as much fun as Queen are having on this album. There is no shortage of flourishes as the band push each song to be the most developed, maximalist version of itself. You’d have to be a bit heartless for it to not raise a smile. A lot of it’s not to my taste - but this is clearly music as a force for good in the world. 6/10
Confirms Queen are not for me, some fun to be had hear though and some spots of excellent production.
A Night At the Opera follows its name quite well, with grandiose themes and dramatic music. I like the layering of the vocals and sound effects used in this album. A hot take is that I’ve never really been a fan of Bohemian Rhapsody however really listening to it again I liked the first part, the second still a little annoying tbh lol. Mercury does truly have an impressive range though.
There are some fantastic songs on this album (You're my Best Friend, Bohemian Rhapsody!!), but it's just gets dragged down by the bad songs. What even is I'm In Love With My Car??
Decently fun and well pieced together album with hits on it but also quite mediocre.3/5
favorite track: Bohemian rhapsody. Overall score: 5.5/10.
Sometimes 4 sometimes 1
Not terrible but not great. I feel like bohemian rhapsody is a diamond and the rough and maybe there’s a couple shiny pebbles in there too. Some of the songs were a little corny and annoying but I suppose the point was the opera theming of it.
meh okay
26 y/o me thinks 19 y/o me is very silly for thinking this album was amazing. Some standouts for sure, but some weird songs that really bring it down
Not bad...for a Queen album. Yes, driving home today I was headbanging to that part in Bohemian Rhapsody, like I was in the back of Garth's car in Wayne's World.
Haven't heard this whole album, just the singles for the most part. The first track is a great progressive metal track though. And the album is mostly good into Seaside Rendezvous, a goofy lowpoint that singlehandedly is bad enought that it almost negates the positive impact of You're My Best Friend, if not Bohemian Rhapsody. Luckily things pick back up in The Prophet's Song, which is a solid one. Love of My Life is a little soft and whiny for me. Good Company is kind of a dumb song as well. Anyway, I'm not sure where this album stands among Queen's discography as I'm by no means a superfan, but I'm not sure it stands up as a truly great album, though its high points are certainly high. 3/5.
Я уважаю что делает этот альбом, но это не моё, прошлый был получше
на нахуй
When Queen are good they're great, and when they're bad they're total shit, 2.5*
No doubt the highlight of this album, for this listener, was Love Of My Life. Had the privilege to attend the Taylor Hawkins tribute show in LA with my kids and Brian May sang this song. I still get goosebumps realizing what we witnessed that day. Anyway, this is album was OK and if you are aware of Queen, you shouldn't be surprised at the wide range of songs and styles. May take a few listens to get there, but I think that's what makes Queen one of the most unique bands out there. Death on Two Legs, You're My Best Friend and Bohemian Rhapsody are great tunes and Love of My Life is special to me. The rest, Ok and different, but can't see my self coming back to most of this album. I will always be a fan of a lot of Queen's music, but this just didn't bring out too much excitement when listening. Part of that may be the most popular song off the album was ruined by TV/movie/radio thinking this was their only song. I still love it. I just try to avoid it these days. 3
3.5 It feels appropriate to kick off Pride month with a Queen album, and what a Queen album at that. For as much as the term “rock opera” is thrown around, I don’t think there’s any other group that’s done it quite like this - while Queen has certainly always had their quirks, this is when they really started to get weird with it, and it makes for a really fun, unique listen. That said, I don’t feel like I love this album as much as I’d like to. It’s enjoyable, with a certain goofy vibe to it that feels like it could lift the lowest of spirits, but at the same time, it also just feels like it lacks great tracks. There are for sure a few that I’ll get to, but stuff like Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon, Seaside Rendezvous, Sweet Lady, and Good Company just don’t come off to me as feeling particularly strong or replayable. They do fit within the context of the album, so you could argue that they serve their purpose, but I also feel like they give off more of a feeling of “filler” than I personally would like. And then on the other hand, you also have flashier, but terrible songs like I’m In Love With My Car and You’re My Best Friend. Honestly, I don’t hate Roger Taylor’s ode to his car as much as I think a lot of bigger Queen fans do, but it for sure has “token Ringo song” energy to it, to the point where the band themselves even thought the song was a joke when he first played it for them. However, my hot take - You’re My Best Friend is much worse (the John Deacon written song on the album in this case). For an album that broke the mold in many ways, YMBF feels like an incredibly safe, generic pop song from the era, especially paired with its very unremarkable, uncreative lyrics. I’m all for full-on band collaboration, but when the two guys saw what Mercury and May were cooking with this particular album, perhaps they should have stepped back. Those out of the way, l do want to shine a light on the handful of great songs found here - Death on Two Legs is a great opener and one of my favorites by the group in general, though my time with the album here actually introduced me to a couple of new favorites in the form of ‘39 and The Prophet’s Song. ‘39 is apparently Brian May’s take on a pirate shanty, but in this case, about space sailors who’ve returned to Earth after some Interstellar shit went down only to find 100 years have passed and everyone they know and love is dead. Not exactly a light topic, but it tracks for the astrophysicist. The Prophet’s Song, on the other hand, feels like a cross between Bohemian Rhapsody and something off of Queen II, my personal favorite album from the group. It just almost grows annoying with the “now I know” section, but it being Freddie Mercury, it works for me - not sure I would say the same if it were coming from anyone else. Love of My Life is a beautiful song that will always make me think of the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Show in LA (performed by May and dedicated to Mercury), and then, obviously, you have Bohemian Rhapsody itself, which is basically the finale to this album. Look, it's obviously great, but man, I am so sick of this song. Like, I could go another five years without having to hear it again and be okay with that. That said, for the purposes of this review, I feel like I have to detach myself a bit from personal experience to really focus on what the song is - and that is a musical masterpiece. It takes a certain kind of mind to come up with this kind of song, and to say that Freddie Mercury was anything short of musical genius and rock icon just based on this track alone feels like sacrilege. For us overplayed as it may be, can you name any other song that has had TWO renaissances like the Wayne’s World and Bohemian Rhapsody films provided this? I certainly can’t. And Lord knows we’ll probably experience another in 15 years or so. So, I guess that’s all to say that I think this is a very unique, memorable album with great moments, but it just has a bit too much (or perhaps even a lack) of things that holds this back from true greatness. Still, I think what this does most importantly is serve as a reminder that Freddie Mercury was truly one of a kind, and his music and memory will live on forever.
‘39 is one of the better songs I’ve heard by them that Freddie isn’t the main singer on. Some of these songs are not my thing. The Prophets Song is overly indulgent and uninteresting. Nothing great outside of Bohemian Rhapsody.
The album has some great vintage British rock sound, some slightly more experimental tracks, and then 'Seaside Rendezvous' and 'Good Company' which were like some weird cabaret. An eight minute rock epic, 'The Prophets Song', with it's weird interlude that sounds like an acapella choir warm-up. Of course I need to mention 'Bohemian Rhapsody', a classic track that represents a microcosm for the whole album. I didn't enjoy everything but respect the effort to experiment and make something new and different. A few misses in there but also some great moments. I'll probably be back for a repeat listen.
Some great songs. Some good songs. Some annoying. Some do all three (Prophet's Song) but all in all tt album which proves to me why I can never love Queen.
I thought this was pretty good, but a bit disappointing as I was really looking forward to diving in -- a legendary band and one of the greatest singers of all time, but I haven't listened to them much apart from the few hits on the radio. The harmonies were outstanding, but a few of the songs were a bit silly. I guess I wasn't expecting as much camp, but I should have known better.
Not an album I would listen to again as a whole. Some songs were extremely annoying, others were masterpieces. I think at the time it came out it was probably something very new and fresh.
Had high hopes but was quite plinky music hall in places and just too many overwraught bvs Bohemian Raphsody brings it up to 3
OK. Didn't love it on first listen.
‘39 was by far my favorite track. I’m not a big queen guy, but i’m glad I explored this!
Michael said it best—a few greatest hits that are big on the radio and that’s why I thought I liked them. Aside from the select few, their songs are random and silly. Rhapsody is a unique song with many layers and components but it’s overplayed and overrated.
I think Queen will always be a greatest hits band for me. I’ve liked a few non-hit tracks from this album, Sheer Heart Attack and Queen II but not much else that isn’t on a greatest hits comp. I think it’s the schizophrenic nature of their albums where it goes from hard rock to camp to classical and then back to rock that throws me off. If the campy show tunes were removed or limited to one interlude per album then I might have a more favorable view of their albums. I generally like the music outside of those tracks.
бурлеск какой-то
We miss you Freddie... Somehow my favorite song is "Good Company". I really enjoyed that. God Save The Queen :D
Starts off incredibly strong with Death on Two Legs, probably my favorite song on the album. It's too cliche to say Bohemian Rhapsody is my favorite, although if you don't like that song you can lick my boot. The Prophet's Song is another hard-hitter, but I found the unpredictability of where the song takes you to be somewhat disorienting. This album is a real blend of different sounds, which doesn't feel super cohesive to me, but goddammit it's Queen so it's pretty fantastic anyway. Giving it three stars because I didn't like more than a couple of songs, but overall very easy to listen to and starting to lean into the type of music I enjoy.
Classic 70's rock. Still listenable but pretty mediocre - then and now (I'm in love with my car? Really?). Other than a couple classics and solid vocals, its no more interesting now than it was back when it came out.
Not a Queen fan. ‘39 was the best song on here.
Enjoyed it more that the other Queen album we had.
If I was just marking this album on Bohemian Rhapsody & Best Friend I think I’d give it a 5. Almost perfect songs, but as an album it’s not a 5 for me but still a strong 3.
A very easy listen, with You're My Best Friend, Bohemian Rhapsody and The Prophet's song the clear highlights, but the rest of the songs are forgettable.
Like kinda fine… but I think queen is a best of type band
2.5 I probably should like queen more than I do, if only for Brian Mays guitar work. Bohemian Rhapsody will forever hold a place with me because of Waynes World. I remember watching (500times) in like grade 1 or 2 and copying the cream of sumyungguy joke to my mom and her flipping out. I obviously did not know what that meant at the time
Interesting album, but inconsistent. Very clear which songs are May vs Mercury. Hidden gem in "'39"
This was decent, I had more patience for it than the last Queen album but come on... two in a week? I also skipped BoRap
Some hits on this one.
classic
A lot to love here like underrated hidden gem bohemian rhapsody and roger’s car, but also a lot that I think is just pretty good. First heard this album in full 10 years ago and still feel about the same
MUPPETS
Some of the best songs ever written mixed in with a few other generic Queen tracks.
Don’t mind me some queen
Has all the ingredients to be an all-timer record, though Queen never seemed to be able to complete a fully coherent and consistent album. Where Bohemian Rhapsody is on the greatest songs of the modern era, a lot of album tracks seem only to have been made to pad it out. Many seem to be based on the sickly sweet songs written by McCartney during the end of The Beatles. Ending on God Save The Queen is a bit much too. Best Tracks: - Bohemian Rhapsody - Death On Two Legs (Dedicated To...) - You're My Best Friend Worst Tracks: - Good Company - Seaside Rendezvous - God Save The Queen Rating: 7/10
Queen is overrated (but still good) This is not my favorite queen album, and Ive grown to hate Bohemian Rhapsody because of the circlejerk over it
Relaxing listen but feel like queen might not be by the album for me
“Bohemian Rhapsody” at its best, “The Prophets Song” at its worst. During the latter I felt assaulted by malevolent fairies. I enjoy the little throwback diddies they include, like “Lazing on a Sunday afternoon”, but I could do without it the throwaway tracks like “I’m in love with my car”. Mercury’s voice is always impressive, and it’s fantastic when he uses it for good.
I know it's somewhat blasphemous but this just doesn't do much for me. Too theatrical
Ved ikke man, det er jo Queen men jeg bryder mig bare ikke særlig godt om Queen. Det blender jo hard rock og opera, Music hall, heavy metal osv. åbenbart en af de dyreste album recorded nogensinde på daværende tidspunkt. Inspirerede fremtidig progressive rock
Meh
hate to be that guy but bohemian rhapsody is the best song here by a mile nothing comes even remotely close god bless america
6/10 Scaramouche 2-03-2025
I mean there are so many iconic songs but as an album I feel like this meanders all over the place. I prefer Queen as a greatest hits band
Like probably a lot of people, I only really know the Queen hits and whilst there are a couple on this album (including their biggest one), I was a bit let down by this. It was fine, Bohemian Rhapsody, You’re My Best Friend and Love of My Life were all great but most of it was just mid.
Queen was never my thing idk
Has two great songs, all the rest don't really have their normal vibe.
3 classics, some average songs and some fillers..
Fav: You're My Best Friend, Bohemian Rhapsody It's Queen, so I knew it would be good. They are rightfully well-regarded.
I loved this album when it came out. Still love Bohemian Rhapsody. Unfortunately, I no longer get much enjoyment from their music. Brian May is an amazing guitarist and Freddy Mercury was a brilliant singer.
don't really love queen
Not as irritating as most of their stuff. And Bohemian Rhapsody is, undeniably, one of the greatest songs ever created.
I have never actually listened to this album and some songs are very strange and not much to my liking but other songs are classics. Excellent album but a few misses in my opinion that keep it from being one of the greats. I don't regret listening to it and I'm sure I will hear it again.
The reception by the masses for popular music changes tides every now and then... after the increase of current popularity of The Beatles back when Rock Band came out, there was a mild backlash by people who would often counter offer Queen as the greatest band of all time. Thing is, I don't think those people ever heard a Queen album in full. I remember reading a FB post regarding the greatness of SPLHCB at which someone gave an answer somewhere along the lines of "yeah, A Night At The Opera laughs at this" which to me is just so out of touch with reality, I'm totally convinced that person had never listened to either one. Like, why would you compare the albums at all? ANATO is quite the accomplishment but its lows are really low, it's totally uneven and it shouldn't come as as surprise to no one that there is a. 2,735 million difference between the number of reproductions of the most popular song and the least one featured in the album. Yes, the truth is, this album is two of the greatest songs ever recorded, along with two other ok ones and eight truly forgettable ones. You're My Best Friend and of course Bohemian Rhapsody are the kind of songs that are are better than most artists whole careers, but that doesn't mean this is a great album. I guess you don't need that with songs as great as those two... 10 fillers will do too. It's no surprise neither that, other than Boomers, everyone got to know Queen for their greatest hits compilations (I myself watched that purple VHS thousands of times).
I was really excited to listen to this one because I've been meaning to listen to this record in entirety for like two decades. Freddie Mercury, man...what if he had lived so much longer? His voice truly is amazing. The harmonies are amazing. The layered instruments - especially guitar, which is the highlight - are done perfectly. Other than Bohemian Rhapsody which is obviously a classic, I really enjoyed the camp of "Seaside Rendezvous" and the more paired back "'39." "You're My Best Friend" was also great, but we already knew that. The harmonizing is done unlike anything I think many artists today would attempt, it's just so ambitious. Will I listen to it in it's entirety again? I don't know but it's certainly a solid record. Last but not least, I was happy to hear the ukulele on "Good Company."
IDK, apparently BR is one of the greatest rock songs ever. I liked '39'. Interesting how the whole band wrote songs and hits. As I listen, more and more, prog rock and heavy metal become less interesting.
Bohemian Rhapsody is the only stand-out song.
point9.
The hits are great, the rest was okay. 3/5
Didn’t enjoy 80% of it, overly dramatic. But it has “You’re My Best Friend” which certainly doesn’t belong with the rest of these songs and “ Bohemian Rhapsody” which while it is in the same vein- is so much better than anything else on the album.
my favorite Queen song ('39) but not my favorite album. There's so much really good stuff here and I appreciate the easily noticeable differences in songs that were crafted by different members
Not my favorite Queen album but we love vocal layering and songs about best friends. 3.5 rounded down since I assume this one gets plenty of high rates.
Quirky mix of rocky songs. Fun to listen to.
Classic but not something I'd listen to per say.
3* overall, including a 5* song and some other interesting moments.
I still don't really see queen as much more than a Greatest Hits band, but this album really wasn't terrible. It had some good and some bad, but you can really tell which songs are wayyyy better than others. I'm In Love With My Car is good. Favorites were Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon, The Prophet's Song, and Bohemian Rhapsody.
Sheer Heart Attack is the better album compared to this. Queen has always been a greatest hits band for me and my opinion is not changed here. I’m In Love With My Car is not good. Favorite songs were Death On Two Legs, Sweet Lady, The Prophet’s Song, and that one song from that movie and that other movie.
Kinda annoying TBH
Good album, not my favorite. I understand the culture impact, but Queen was never my cup of tea. Besides the songs that i know, love of my life and bohemian rhapsody, i really like good company, it reminds me the Beatles.
Bohemian Rhapsody might be the single greatest song of all time, but the album? There are a few songs I'd rather skip every time, and most of the rest aren't particularly outstanding (that might be due to my high expectations in anticipation of the penultimate track though).
Ein queeniges Album, ein grossartiges Bohemian Rhapsody aber für mich nicht das beste Queen Album.
As a band, the over the top style is not my cup of tea. Managed to find some moments to enjoy throughout but hasn't changed my opinion.
I get it. I dont really care about it or buy into it so my 3 star review seems like a slight, but trust ne it's not. It's just that I want to hear Queen as much as I want to hear Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. But unlike my last album (a Limp Bizkit effort) this album absolutely deserves to be on this list.
Meh, not for me.
Lacklustre stylistic exercise but Bohemian rhapsody single-handedly saves it 3.3
Some great songs. X
More bombastic and uneven than Sheer Heart Attack. Its got some bangers but also some cheese to wade through. Highlights: "Death on Two Legs" (dramatic opener), "My Best Friend" (beautiful poppy love song), "'39" (a relatively simple strummy song with a folky leaning)
3.5 some enjoyable stuff
The problem is that you know the hits from years of hearing them on the radio and the rest of the album can't match them I imagine that when it was released it was a great listen when you had no comprehension of what to expect
This album is a lot of fun, but honestly it's pretty goofy, even entering outright comedy at times. If I had never heard of Queen I would say based on this that they were a glam version of the Bonzo Dog Band. '39 and Good Company are my favourite tracks, I think. Bohemian Rhapsody is too overloaded with associations for me to have any clear assessment on.
(so shoot me but for all their splendour...) For Queen "just give me the greatest hits". I really dont like prog rock. Too close to The Who for me. <weak sigh> and, I do feel this leaning (aetiologically / evolutionarily ?) into <ickky> Andrew Lloyd Weber territory for me. Exceptions: (there always are exceptions) A. Bohemian Rhapsody (elevated, as it was, by some theatrical headbanging in the 1990s) B. LIVE AID performance by Freddy Mercury stands up as one of the best live performances of all time. Note: He played the hits. and Bowie...
***An ok album
Legendarna piosenka otoczona dużą ilością szumu. Niestety samo to nie da więcej niż 3/5
30/11/24 There is only really one song that carries this album, and it's a shame.
Good.
7/10 This was good - but I didn’t like it as much as Sheer Heart Attack. Queen seem to be at their best when they do pure hard rock or pure pop. Here some of it was a little blander and leaning into an American sound? There are a few good songs here that would be in contention for best song - The Prophet’s Song was excellent - it this album has a juggernaut on it. An all timer for a reason. Best: Bohemian Rhapsody
The high points on this album are undeniable. Freddy Mercury’s voice and the production are incredible. That said, I don’t dig the theatre for a reason and this album is full of it. I don’t find playful whimsy and sounds for the sake of making sounds particularly fun.
- Lots of nostalgia - 3/12 songs added to playlist - Death on Two Legs feels a little corny but the guitar is awesome so I can overlook it - IILWMC is funny in context but not a great song - Not as good as remember it - Freddie’s voice is beautiful especially in Seaside Rendezvous - The Prophet’s Song still rocks - Overall not very interesting - Favorite song: The Prophet’s Song
⭐ bohemian rapsody
Queen to me are a bit like Guns 'n' Roses - a huge reputation based on a few songs, although Queen do have a lot more than GnR do. They are fine, technically gifted musicians front to back, if a bit pedestrian ... but a singer who could elevate mundane lyrics into magic. Take Your My Best Friend, for example. Now, I love the song, but the lyrics are pretty simplistic, and the music is nothing special, but Freddie lifted it to something brilliant. I'm In Love With My Car, however, is a different story. Ignore the lyrics, and musically it's a pretty good rocker - but Roger Taylor singing doesn't add anything. I'm not saying if Mercury had done it it would have been good (the lyrics make sure of that), but it would have been better. Tl;Dr- Queen are a bit over-hyped, and the album is fine but not amazing.
Liked it, wouldn’t return to most of it.
No. 269/1001 Death On Two Legs 3/5 Lazing On a Sunday Afternoon 2/5 I'm In Love Wirh My Car 4/5 You're My Best Friend 4/5 '39 3/5 Sweet Lady 3/5 Seaside Rendezvous 3/5 The Prophet's Song 3/5 Love Of My Life 4/5 Good Company 3/5 Bohemian Rapsody 5/5 God Save The Queen NR Average: 3,36 Bohemian Rapsody is obviously a masterpiece. Aside from that the record didn't really click for me.
Freddie was one of the greatest frontmen, but Queen were just too Pomp Rock for me.
Queen is a little overrated to me. I’d still rather listen to them than most other pop rock bands from their era though, and this album was fine
Not the biggest Queen fan but this was okay. I don’t even think I need to say what my favorite song was.
Not a big Queen fan but this does have some of their most famous songs on it.
# 340 : They've done a pretty decent job, great album, I like the hits of course, massive production undertaking here. Favourite track : Bohemian Rhapsody
Not my favorite queen album. Possibly my least favorite. That said it is still a good album with impressive diversity. A bad queen album is still worth hearing at least once deeply.
Didn’t not enjoy this one, but not really my sort of thing so probably wouldn’t listen again. The big ones are good!
Some world beating tracks in this, but also Roger Taylor wants to put his dick in his tailpipe
its not bad but just not for me YNN
Великие песни-хиты в филлере. Лучшая песня - Bohemian Rhapsody
Queen is a greatest hits band for me for the most part. I feel like they don’t have a great album. Their albums always have a few good and great songs, but a lot of duds too. This album is no exception. I like the more novelty-esque songs like seaside rendezvous and lazing on a Sunday afternoon. And Bogemian rhapsody is a classic. Everything else was forgettable.
The highs here are stratospheric. The lows have are buried in the sand up to their heads, pretending to be mermaids.
I expected so much more from this one.
Never loved Queen. This album didn't really change my mind, I'm afraid. Not bad, but didn't start a fire in my heart either.
Simultaneously proggy and poppy, really interesting how popular Queen is given how wacky some of this is Faves: Your My Best Friend, Bohemian Rhapsody, Love of My Life
I’d recommend their greatest hits instead
Tough one for me. A couple great hits, a couple songs I had never heard, but really liked. A couple songs were just terrible.
Forgot how overrated Queen was
Coming to terms with the idea that I don’t really like Queen anymore. Can’t say I think this one is bad, it’s not. It’s kinda cool, it kinda rocks. But this is probably the last time I’ll ever listen to it start to finish. Rounding up here, because a 2 doesn’t feel right. But a 2 might have been right.
I don't really know what to make of this. The obvious highlights are amazing, but it's also completely all over the place at times. Wtf is going on in the prophets song??!!?!?
The Queen songs I like, I really like. They are explosive, energetic, catchy, beautiful, 5/5, but while I hate to admit it: The other Queen songs just give me nothing. I want to enjoy the album more than I did, but besides You're My Best Friend, Love of My Life and Bohemian Rhapsody, there are only mediocre filler songs. Even so, I recognize the production quality and innovation, which makes my overall rating feel even more unfair. 3.5/5
I enjoy me some Queen but some of this was just not quite my jam. Obviously the 3 songs that are bangers were still bangers.
Queen, are another band, like the Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones, who have a great best of compilation (in this case two great best ofs), but whose album tracks are pretty bad. The album tracks on A Night at the Opera aren't so awful that I'm giving it two stars despite the presence of a 5 star song (unlike Beggar's Banquet) but there's still a lot of guff on this album. Bohemian Rhapsody is an obvious stand out, You're My Best Friend is fun, but don't bother with the rest.
It has the one song I guess. Pretty over-rated, this album at least.
Meh
6.5/10
Appreciate it, but don’t love it.
I think I expected more from this album. I love Queen, I love Freddie Mercury. I love “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and I knew a couple other tracks from this one. But I dunno. I obviously didn’t expect every song to be “Bohemian Rhapsody” in terms of iconicness and quality. But most of the tracks feel kinda like what John Lennon might refer to as “granny music.” The album starts off hot with “Death on Two Legs” but then we get “Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon, which I liked, but it definitely fits the “granny music” label. They kind of come back with “I’m In Love with My Car,” but that song is stupid and bad and doesn’t work. This pattern kind of continues until we get some more meandering stuff near the end, redeemed only by “Bohemian Rhapsody.” I know the point of this album is to be a little more elevated in terms of artistic intent and taste. I think it partially accomplishes this. But on the whole it wasn’t nearly as compelling as I expected it to be, which is a shame. A very surprising three stars. Standout Tracks: Death on Two Legs, Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon, You’re My Best Friend, Sweet Lady, Bohemian Rhapsody
Easy come easy go
I wanted to rate it two because it's not so great. But Bohemian Rhapsody is such a masterpiece it would be cruel
I liked this less than I thought I would. There are some classics on here, which are great obviously, but a few of the songs I found irritatingly twee, like Seaside Rendezvous and Good Company.
This is quintessential Queen. However, there are maybe four or five songs on this album that I find to be kind of annoying
Bueno
The campy songs on this in my mind were a success, the others not so much.
Quite a variety of sounds. Some hits, some misses for sure. Some whiny songs but some lovely ones as well.
I like a lot of it. But i just don't think I'm particularly a fan of this kind of rock music. I see the great things in it. Especially with how transformative the songs are. It's incredible and I see why people say you have to listen to it before you go. I'll definitely end up listening to it again at some point in my life but at the moment I think I'm gonna put it back on the back burner.
It was all really well done. Just not really a vibe I was into at the moment. There were a lot of very complicated and dynamic arrangements. It was impressive, but I just kind of felt anxious listening to it.
It’s Queen.
Standout: 39' (made this a 3 for me)
This album fluctuates between fantastic songs, forgettable songs, and the worst songs you’ve ever heard. Luckily, most of the bad songs are short, but you can’t ignore the bad taste they leave
Has some Queen classics. Has some absolute dog piss
4 outstanding songs with a lot of Granny Shit in between. It's a cool concept album, but the jaunty dancehall tracks detract "Death On Two Legs" rocks hard, as does "I'm in Love With My Car." "Bohemian Rhapsody" is still a great song.
Call me a republican, but I just find this unenjoyable to listen to on the whole.
Some great tracks on there, last one made me vomit though
One of the better ones…..
Decent Queen record I suppose. Fave Songs: You’re My Best Friend & Bohemian Rhapsody.
Pretty good classic rock staple. Don't love it as a whole album but some of the bands best songs and some of the best songs of the decade by any band are on this one. Bohemian Rhapsody, You're My Best Friend are awesome. Love of my life is beautiful. Seaside Rendezvous and Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon are nice little honky tonk piano jaunts.
Clive - I still hate you for playing Queen's Greatest Hits on repeat when we did the road trip to Melbourne in 1990. I had a great REM mixed tape all ready to go. It's pompous and the car song sucks, but Queen are a level above the 70s glam rockers. I never want to hear it again though.
Good fun considering it’s Queen
I like a couple tracks - no denying the creativity, originality and quality of the musicianship on the album, but it's all a little too campy for me.
Any album with Bohemian Rhapsody is going to be good. Unfortunately, there is A LOT of filler on here as well. It's all fine, but this is not a 5 star album, and maybe not even a 4 star album.
Obviously a well loved band and I respect that. My only issue is they are all over the place stylistically, ‘39 doesn’t really even sound like a Queen song to me. There are some great songs on here, but the album as a whole isn’t something I would throw on and listen straight through.
I think Queen is one of those bands that is totally hit or miss for me. Every time I hear these albums, I get a different impression. And that's each individual time I listen to this band. Q and QII both hit differently, same with Sheer Heart Attack. Great stuff on all of them, but SO disjointed too. I get it, these musical geniuses can't be contained, but damn, it's so hard to get into these albums. I probably should do a "hard" Queen playlist and weed out the 20s Jazz and Opera stuff... Anyway, not bad today - not a killer but fun to hear (this time!)
The hits hit. Not too interesting otherwise.
Lotta people will try to have you believe this is a GREAT record. It is not, it is just a good record.
A couple of standouts but some of this was just not for me. Had to skip thru the Prophet song as it got just gross. I like Queen well enough, but maybe just the hits, I guess.
