Reviews (page 10 of 14)
Boy that Rami Malek sure can sing! This is actually my first listen through a Queen record (except for greatest hits). For some reason in my mind they were a band who never really had a great album, but I feel like this A Night At The Opera has earned its legacy though - several great tracks and vocal performances that speak for themselves. There’s a lot of fun and silliness throughout as well which I maybe wasn’t anticipating but is entirely charming. And despite being overplayed to death, it’s hard to sniff at Bohemian Rhapsody - hardly a controversial opinion I know but it’s hard to argue with how game changing it was while still remaining a thoroughly entertaining song. Four and a half stars. Fave tracks: Love Of My Life / Bohemian Rhapsody
Really solid album. Pop and hard rock and prog and opera(??) in a mix that only they could pull off. And as overplayed as Bohemian Rhapsody is it is still an awesome song idc what anyone says. Best song: Bohemian Rhapsody (You're My Best Friend deserves a shoutout though)
A classic
Was actually great and I did enjoy it
W album
A classic, need to listen to prophets song again
The first album proposed that I already knew. A good album, not the best, by Queen but featuring the masterpiece Bohemian Rhapsody
They really let everyone have a crack at this album, and it mostly works. Who new that BoRap wasn't the most epic song on it?
but who was the zeppo
Queen at their brightest
Loved this. Queen is a really enjoyable band.
Maybe I’m just biased because I actually know stuff but vibes. I liked that it wasn’t too same-y and had good harmony and textures. An easy listen unlike some of the other rubbish on here. Only think I didn’t care for was the national anthem lol. Rip Queenie :(
Bops
Absolutely fantastic album, with such a massive variety of different genres somehow blended seamlessly (Seaside Rendezvous, The Prophets Song and Love of my Life as consecutive songs is just ridiculous but works so well, and Bohemian Rhapsody has pretty much every aspect of those within one impeccable song). I’m In Love With My Car and Good Company are the only two songs really holding the track list down from being a 5.
Huge. Awesome. Sick. Love it to bits. Top Stuff: You're My Best Friend, Seaside Rendezvous, The Prophet's Song, Love Of My Life Bottom Stuff: I'm In Love With My Car, God Save The Queen
chipper and pleasant. 4.
If this is what a night at the opera was like, I would go to the opera. Actual opera music is down there with my least favorite musical styles/genres. But Queen's idea of a "Night at the Opera" is more like it. Genre whiplash is part of what keeps this interesting, though. Some of those genre experiments work (the folky "'39"), but some are too much ("Seaside Rendezvous"). "Bohemian Rhapsody" is the real attraction, though, and worth at least an extra star by itself.
We had both the red and blue greatest hits albums because my mom bought them the day she went down to telegraph and saw the mud people. Those and weezer’s blue album were the only albums my HS friends and I consistently agreed on listening to. I wasn’t sure how this would go since I didn’t know a lot of the songs on this album, but it would pretty solid. That prophet song was too weird to be good but otherwise 👌. And bohemian rhapsody is always incredible.
What a whirlwind of accomplishment. Usually such an array of musical styles would garner a snarky comment akin to pick a lane. However, somehow, Queen make the style gyrations seem seem less. Bohemian Rhapsody and You’re My Best Friend are great and deserve all the accolades they get. But I’d like to focus on ‘39. I’d never heard it before. It sounds contemporary for today, nearly 50 years later. There is a relatively popular song that sounds like it used ‘39 as an inspiration, and I can’t put my finger on it. I’d give this album a 5, but the end of Sweet Lady goes off the rails and I don’t care that much for The Prophet’s Song.
3.5/5
The hits for sure but also some great surprises. Except for the Car song.
Classic album. I think it goes without saying that "Bohemian Rhapsody" is a song for the ages. Can't quite give this a 5, but I'd give it a 4.5 if I could.
It's Queen.
This album is absolutely iconic. There are multiple amazing songs here, but especially Bohemian Rhapsody. I mean, even if every other song on the album was terrible, that song would get this album at least a 4 in my book. Having said that, not every other song on this album is terrible - far from it - but it must be noted that there is at least one really terrible song on the album, "I'm in Love with my Car." That song is like, WTF? 4 stars.
4.5 So close to a perfect 5.0
Really fun, but some low points keep it from a 5.
I liked two songs from this album.
Prima album, heel divers. Staan een paar top nummers op, ook best wat mindere.
Masterpiece
Seaside rendezvous
Really solid album. Queen had range.
would be like 3.7 some sounded the same
Fun album
A very respectable album. Energetic, without being frenetic. Original and fresh.
Certainly Bohemian Rhapsody is one of those songs that seems a wonder on how you go from a blank page to a fully finished song like that... there seems nothing else like it. Amazing. The rest of the album is still good, grandiose and definitely a show... embracing Freddie's amazing voice. An interesting and enjoyable listen.
Enjoyed it.
i actually hadn't listened to the instrumentation too closely before, but i enjoyed it more than i thought it would be. i didn't enjoy a lot of the harmonies tho rip
good fucking album - the aesthetic was top tier with "you're my best friend" and bohemian rhapsody. really liked the opener song, i haven't listened to that in a while.
I’ve slept on my Queen in my adult life because…middle school boys like them? I guess? But wow, this is good stuff. Really ahead-of-its time sound. Really love ‘39. Not so crazy about Sweet Lady. Internal jury still out on the Prophet’s Song
Awesome
i lik this album as much as robert taylor liks his car :) fav songs: You're My Best Friend, Sweet Lady, Bohemian Rhapsody
A Night at the Opera is the fourth studio album by the British rock band Queen, released in 1975. It is one of the band's most highly regarded and commercially successful works, and it is often considered to be one of the greatest albums of all time. One of the standout features of A Night at the Opera is its diverse range of musical styles, which includes hard rock, progressive rock, opera, and even vaudeville. The album's title is a reference to the Marx Brothers film of the same name, and the album's artwork is inspired by the film's iconic poster. The album's lead single, "Bohemian Rhapsody," is perhaps the most well-known and beloved track on the album. The song, which is over six minutes long, is an epic masterpiece that features complex harmonies, multiple tempo changes, and operatic influences. It has become one of the most iconic rock songs of all time, and its music video, which was released in 1975, is considered to be one of the first ever made for a rock song. Other standout tracks on the album include "You're My Best Friend," "Love of My Life," and "I'm in Love with My Car." Each of these songs showcases the band's unique blend of rock, opera, and pop, and they demonstrate the band's incredible musicianship and vocal prowess. Overall, A Night at the Opera is a truly exceptional album that showcases the full range of Queen's talents. It is a must-listen for any fan of rock music, and it is a testament to the band's enduring legacy as one of the greatest rock bands of all time.
I've always felt like I was perhaps eligible for a public flogging because I've never totally felt like I "get" Queen-- but I can appreciate this for what it is!
Queen have always been seen as a singles band to me and this is no exception. But its hard to deny, theres a lot of quality on here amongst the guff.
Love the title cause it is exactly what it feels like
Classic
Amazing
enjoyable
A very rich and diverse album. I prefer News of the World when it comes to Queen albums, but this one is probably their second best.
8/10 This album is able to blend genres like rock, classical, 20s/30s era swing, and folk as well as experiment musically in a flawless way. I have known many of Queens songs but never listened to an entire album front to back. At just under 45 minutes this album flies by. Each track is not only great listening from a general consumer standpoint, but they’re also entertaining. There’s tons of musical moments in this album that surpassed my expectations. I thoroughly enjoyed the seaside rendezvous, with it’s wonky sounds and orchestration. It also epitomizes the effortless style and swagger of Queen. I also enjoyed some of the effects that were played around with, like the vocal delay in The Prophet’s Song, or the phaser play in Good Company. All In all I found this to be a fantastic album and certainly one that I will revisit the majority of the songs.
I either loved or hated, in any case all the songs created some kind of feeling within me so i respect it.
All time classic. Strangely it is still not in my library...
Might be a 5 if not for some rather odd inclusions.
I don’t know if I’ve ever listened to a Queen album start to finish, pretty sure I’ve only listened to greatest hits so aside from, You’re my Best Friend and Bohemian Rhapsody, everything was new to me. I really enjoyed the stripped down sound of ‘39 and Love of My Life. Queen is great, aside from the car song, this album is amazing. 4 stars
Great album, always enjoy listening to it.
The sheer bollocks of Queen on this girthy record! Freddie sounds like a foghorn choking on the last doughnut in the box. Such poise and energy intertwined. A rather large barrage of carnage. A lillywhite blossom in a glass of still water sat on the mantlepiece, wilting in the late evening sunshine. A bulldog shitting all over the living room rug. A pencil sharpened to the point of snapping. A dingo yapping at the dead body in the boot of the car.
Rock Opera
Listened Before? N What is there to say about this album that hasn't already been said? From concept to execution, from composition to musicianship it is a very, very good record. I can't speak to how it stands in Queen's overall catalogue because I haven't heard the rest yet: but WHAT a start! Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: You're My Best Friend, Bohemian Rhapsody
Mama mia, mama mia let me go! Another timeless classic, especially on Bohemian Rapshody (it doesnt have 2 billion plays on spotify for nothing) Though must of the songs on that album were new to me, Im pretty sure I heard "In love with my car" before. It's a nice album but some songs had me faze out a bit. Sometimes it seems like they focused more on studio gimmicks than the actual songs.
Love a bit of queen, it’s a good starter album, bohemian rhapsody is a stunning song that wouldn’t work unless Freddie sings it.
Overall a weird but enjoyable album with a great variety of instruments and styles. The absolute classic tracks on this album are fantastic.
Great album and somewhat flamboyant at times, maybe too much? "Bohemian Rhapsody" saves it a little bit but it may be a tad too funky for my taste. 8/10.
5/11, 45%
The composition and singing is really phenomenal. It doesn't have a ton of catchy songs, but they are all solid.
-S Tier- You’re My Best Friend Bohemian Rhapsody -A Tier- Death on Two Legs ‘39 Sweet Lady The Prophet’s Song -B Tier- I’m in Love with My Car Love of My Life Good Company -C Tier- Seaside Rendezvous AVG SCORE: 3.7 / 5 - - - Aside from the two classics, this album has a fair share of underrated songs that likely suffered from their proximity to those classics (particularly Bohemian Rhapsody — I mean, how do you compare anything favorably to that).
Awesome.
Well, I think that I need to take my statement back that Queen can't do albums like they do singles, this is (almost) a brilliant album, just wildly veering between rock, music hall and sappy balladry with ease. Obvs it contains 'that song'. I can almost forgive the horrible version of 'God Save The Queen', but the pompous 'Prophets Song' and Slade on a diet 'Im in Love With My Car' hold this album back from perfection.
Another classic
im having a balllll
Eittämättä klassikko. Vähemmän kuunnellut biisit on pysynyt kiinnostavana. Hitit taas kuluneet liikakuuntelusta. Onhan tää kaunis ja hauska. 4/5
Kenties Queenin isoin levy. Yllättävän pehmeää musaa. Ei kuitenkaan mun suosikki-Queen, vaikka useampi hyvä raita, joten jää nyt 4/5.
Some hits. some misses for me, alright though.
A solid album. Bohemian Rhapsody being the masterpiece it is raises the the rating from 3 to 4 stars. I've always appreciated Queen even though i've mainly listened to albums with just the greatest hits. I have never heard a bad song from them. They might have songs that are not as engaging as others but that doesn't make those bad. This album has a lot of songs i've never really listened to, so I appreciate it.
Classic.
4 stars for Love of my life and Bohemian Rhapsody of course! A pleasant album, I enjoyed being reminded of its innovation (leaving cert music throwback!)
Weird classic
Wow this was a fun one. Queen never disappoints.
Some of Queen's finest work. The production skills alone make this a great album. I like that Queen was an all hands band, everybody contributed so that it wasn't a vanity project for Freddie Mercury and Brian May. But with that lack of vanity, there are some weaker songs keeping this from being a perfect five-star album. 4/5.
bangin
Not really my thing but it's a great album.
Excellent
Queen. Good. listen again you prick
Much prefer the first half of the album, it’s full of classics.
10cc did it better
Incredible queen album - not much more to say.
Este disco me cuesta trabajo. Las canciones que me gustan me gustan mucho y las otras más raras me cansan muy rápido. Además de Bohemian Rhapsody, You're My Best Friend y Love Of My Life son las mejores. 3.5 que sube a 4.
It's good
7/10
Some songs were a bit out there, but overall a great album.
Bohemian Rhapsody has more than earned its place in the pantheon of all-time great songs, but A Night at the Opera offers a bevy of auditory delights, from the Dixieland jazz of Good Company (all replicated with Brian May’s guitar) to the Motown pastiche of You’re My Best Friend to the intricate harmonies and apocalyptic imagery of The Prophet’s Song. With their backs against the wall, Queen produce an album that isn’t quite their finest work, but gives an excellent overview of their skill and their fearlessness to experiment with genre and technique.
Sounds downright Beatlesque at times! I caught a few new tracks to save. Pretty funny that I’ve never troubled to listen to the entire album from which we get Bohemian Freakin Rhapsody.
I haven’t actually listed to a lot of Queen, aside from the hits everyone’s heard a thousand times. Pretty sure I never listened to this album before. It’s way weirder than I would have guessed. It’s interesting to hear Bohemian Rhapsody in context, with its call backs to little motifs from earlier songs. Very good and very strange, for an offering from an arena-filling rock band.
okay, yeap, this is queen, thanks for the reminder... a lot of choir stuff...
Some great songs on this album, but also a few just okay ones. The closer sealed it for me. Only four stars.
nice harmonies, most songs are kinda bland/generic. Although, the one's that are good are some of the best songs of all time.
the album with bohemian on it love of my life is also pretty good
❤️ brings me back to my childhood - a classic
I was listening to all the annoying vaudeville shit on this album and rolling my eyes and then I thought to myself, hang on, if Paul McCartney wrote that you’d be sucking it right off. I really dropped a truth bomb on myself. So this album actually rules.
Queen is one of the best bands of all time and Bohemian Rhapsody is the greatest rock song ever made. Some of their less popular songs are featured on here and its refreshing to hear them with how prevalent their biggest hits are played. Freddie Mercury also had one of the best voices of lead singers and had one of the best stage presences ever.
"Larger-than-life British arena-glam rockers who mastered the art of the pop single, led by the incomparable Freddie Mercury." This is what Allmusic has to say about Queen, even if all those pop singles were also coming from LPs, at least as far as I know. Note that this overall description doesn't mention albums at all. And there might be a reason for that, which could possibly be that Queen's extravagant antics were far less suitable for the length of a whole album, to the point when they could turn from extravagant to simply exhausting in the course of such longer plays... That being said, it would be ridiculous to *fully* exclude such a legendary band for a list of 1001 essential records, and *A Night At The Opera* is probably the best candidate for it out there, thanks to "Bohemian Rhapsody", of course, but also to the far less known and yet absolutely marvellous cuts in it, expecially the equally extravagant but also mystical "The Prophet" and its incredible vocal bridge in the middle of the song, the heavy blues-rock of "Sweet Lady", or the psychedelic folk ballad about space explorers "39", all of them penned by future astronomer Brian May (!). Add a large chunk of rockers (mean and wicked opener "Death On Two Legs" or Roger Daltrey's hilarious "I'm In Love With My Car" ) along with a few mock-novelty numbers here and there, and you have a great album whose main strength actually lies in its 180 degrees twists and turns, keeping you on your toes the whole time. Such a record proves that Queen can be interesting and even relevant for stuff that has nothing to do with their most obvious and famous hits, still sounding fresh today. You may think you know everything there is to know about this band, and yet you might be wrong about this. So who knows? Maybe *A Night At The Opera* will be an entry point for me so that I can later discover wonders in their other seventies albums (my superficial listening sessions for them strongly point towards "Queen II" , "Sheer Heart Attack" or "Jazz", maybe even "News of The World", even though I feel everything important about the latter can be summed up in its first two tracks, "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions", that I obviously already have in a compilation at home). Whatever the case may be, and in the meantime, I'm happy to include *A Night At The Opera* in my own list. I feel that for a casual listener to this band, there are worse ways to start a full-blown exploration of their back catalogue, at least. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 851 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory: 82 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 37 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 31
"A Night at the Opera" is the fourth studio album from Queen. It was also the most expensive album recorded at the time. Queen was in a desperate position as they were broke from their previous three albums from mismanagement by their management company which they subsequently dropped eventually signing with EMI Records. They recorded using 24 tracks with a wide range of styles including ballads, music hall, dixieland, hard rock, progressive rock, jazz and opera. On previous listens, besides the big hits, I thought the album was "too" all over the place. On repeated listens today, I came to better appreciate the sheer attempt to achieve something grander and larger and the change in styles. Lyrical themes ranged from science fiction, fantasy, heartbreak and romance. All four members wrote songs that made the album. Musically, the highlights are the vocal harmonization and Brian May's guitar. The album starts out with "Death on Two Legs ( Dedicated to...) with its classical intro progressing into some classic 70's style guitar. The song is about their former management company, Trident, and specifically their owner, Norman Sheffield. The second single and one of my favorite Queen songs is "You're My Best Friend " with its Wurlitzer electric piano intro. It was written by bass player John Deacon for his wife, Veronica. Ahhhh! " The Prophet Song" is Queen's longest song at 8 minutes. It is quite the journey more in the progressive rock style with May's guitar, delayed vocal tapes and harmonization and a fantasy about the great flood. I can see some detractors on this song. And the we have "Bohemian Rhapsody" combining the intro to a ballad to an operatic section to a rock song. The song was actually a combination of three songs. The band has remained very secretive about its meaning only admitting the content was personal to Freddie Mercury. This is quite the musically ambitious album which catapulted Queen into superstardom. The album connected with me today more than before. It's been awhile since I've watched "Wayne's World." Maybe today is the day.
Don’t think I’ve ever listened to this the whole way through. Not my favourite queen album. There was a few weird songs on their. But, BohRhap is such an absolute masterpiece of music it bumps this to a 4.
I thought I would like this more. At least there’s a few awesome songs that bump it to a 4.
Really enjoyed it. I’ve grown to love Queen’s breadth of musicality
Uhh so yeah. Freddie’s brain child. Funky all through with elements of swing and classic 50s American music. Honestly Bohemian Rhapsody is ridiculously out of place on the album. It just doesn’t match the rest of the album thematically. Really would have wished Queen was known for some of these more funky and out there moments
Super talented music theatre nerds who love hard rock. I have a friend who hates Queen (and he’s got a music degree) and this album exemplifies that hate. So much bombast. A two minute acapella in a song that isn’t a song just a ramble of ideas. The best songs take those elements and temper it (like the song) into an actual well thought out piece. Even love of my life sounds better live without all the flourishes just to show they can.
I'm biased towards rock music, so I'm not going to give Queen fewer than four stars. But except for 2-3 songs, the album is just OK. The rest of the songs kind of lack unique style and internal cohesion.
Adored. Did not know bohemian rhapsody was from this album, was a nice surprise!
Queen is a international referent, big band.
Whoa, absolutely love the variety on this album. It's silly, epic, sprawling, and contained depending on which track you're on. I like this side of Queen outside of their anthemmy rock hits.
Queen is just a solid rock band. Didn't love every song on the album but still an overall good one.
With the wide range of sounds, genres and influences that are present in A Night at the Opera, you would think that there would be no coherency and that it would be all over the place. However, Queen manage to wrap it all up in a neat bow, hell there's even an instrumental version of the British National Anthem to tie it altogether! AJ Ramirez of PopMatters sums the album up much more eloquently than I have "... while the transitions between genres would conceivably throw listeners for a loop, none are jarring. Instead, Queen succeeds because it pulls from all the best tricks in the library of showbiz history to deliver laughs, heartache, grandeur, and spectacle to its audience at precisely the right moments." Best: Bohemian Rhapsody (cliche I know) Worst: Good Company
Solid Queen album...better than Sheer Heart Attack. You're my best friend is a top Queen song in my book. 3.5/5
very theatrical - i guess not surprising given the name. but as much as i realized queen was like this I didn't realize how much.
Cool! Now let's see what's the hype is all about... Update: Basically glam rock but the musicians are actually very talented. But this particular album is pretty playful. They don't take themselves too seriously. It's kinda fun, carefree even. An opener that seems to trash on someone? A song about a loving cars? Together with monster hits like "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Love of My Life"? Clearly, this isn't an ordinary night at the opera. As of now, it's a 4. Maybe I'll appreciate it more if I come back to it.
As much as I love classic rock, Queen has never been one of my favorites. The album is good enough I guess, but it's not something I had gone back to much when I first listened to it years ago. "Bohemian Rhapsody" is a classic masterpiece, of course, but we've all heard it a billion times. The only other one I really like from the album is the first track "Death on Two Legs" which is less bombastic, although the lyrics seem a bit whiney.
+Death On Two Legs, '39, Love of My Life -Sweet Lady, The Prophet's Song Highlights are not the radio hits we're used to (but those are good, too)... The album opens up with a suckerpunch that knocks you windless, but keeps you wanting...'39 is a light-hearted strummy melody that harkens back to John Denver but in that unique Queen way. What I didn't like... Sweet Lady: "You call me sweet like I'm some kind of cheese" lolwut?...The Prophet's Song is great for the first 3 minutes, then it devolves into a long, grating, and repetitive and I feel like it was intentionally done this way because only Queen could get away with it. This is a terrific album, however with wall-to-wall hits and great variety.
4.5. This is a classic. So many great songs.
So close to being 5 stars, but the Car song and Sweet Lady really drag this album down.
It does have *that* song on it, but the rest of the album is very enjoyable as well. Operatic and a bit over the top in a good way
12 canciones (1975) Escuchadas previamente: Love of my life & Bohemian Rhapsody Fav: Bohemian Rhapsody Descubrimiento: Sweet Lady Notas: Inicio y final de las canciones >>> El solo de guitarra de Sweet Lady mola mucho Puntuación final: 4,2/5
What can you say? Classic Queen songs.
I quite enjoyed this one.
Good listen
Muy buen disco
Bohemian rhapsody aside, this album was good and the opera vibes were there the whole time. I also really like you’re my best friend. Also bohemian rhapsody holy shit bro
A total mix of genres, but they pull it off. However, were some misses. Overall I enjoyed the album, though did feel like I was just waiting for Bohemian Rhapsody
So good.
yep, that’s queen
4, i know the hits but surprised how much i like the whole album. Death on two legs is a banger
This is, at a personal level, probably the most important record of my life: I was listening to it at the precise moment in which I decided that I was (and still am) a woman. And The Prophet Song should have been a huge hit.
Surprised me! Obviously knew some of these songs but even the ones I didn’t were pretty good!
If you've never heard this before: this album contains "Bohemian Rhapsody." So, imagine an album where that song makes sense. That's right: it's an insane blender of styles and unchecked ambition. There's a harp on here. Also, young Freddie Mercury is even more amazing than I remember. Also, Brian May deserves the props and respect that he gets.
Love the country vibes
Quality. Must have sounded epic when it came out.
I love queen but don’t think this is one of their best albums. Yes it had two of their best known songs on it but the rest of the album were done that were so so.
I mean... you know, named after a Marx Brothers Film...one of my faves and the album is no slouch either.
Queen are instantly recognizable thanks to Brian May's unique guitar sound and Freddie Mercury's amazing distinctive vocals. It's quite a playful (operatic) album but occasionally it veers into self indulgence. At it's best it's simply breathtaking (Bohemian Rhapsody, You're My Best Friend) but some of it is rather mediocre.
Lovely. God save her Maj from getting the AIDS again
So much more here than just Bohemian Rhapsody! What a great album.
I do like Queen. They are a lot of fun, Freddie is an unmistakable voice and character, and the vocal harmonies are great, the musicianship (Brian May is amazing!) is fantastic. All that being said, sometimes they are a bit too much for me -- when I'm in the right mood for them, it rocks and it's a great time. When I'm not, it can be a bit in my face, but I totally get that's part of the charm, so I don't knock them for that. Also, this album has songs I grew up hearing so many times, like 'You're My Best Friend' and of course the timelessly iconic 'Bohemian Rhapsody', so, heck yes, it belongs on this list.
listened to before Queen's best work
It is undeniably good but I just don't feel anything listening to Queen
A collection of fun, eclectic and well-composed songs, with a smattering of classics, all impeccably recorded.
A fun mix of rock, pop and music hall. The best opera I've ever heard.
Det är ju så satans bra är det??
Clássico. Icônico. Top Hits do Queen.
This feels like a band at the top of their game, with the freedom to deliver exactly the kind of album they want, even if it is risky from a trad pop perspective. "Bohemian Rhapsody" isn't even the most outre track. The album goes in all sorts of different directions, all tied together by the craft and extravagance of Queen.
Not the strongest first half but Bohemian Rhapsody more than makes up for it
This is the one with Bohemian Rhapsody on it, which is still a great song no matter how many times you've heard it. Overall, the album is pretty darn good but doesn't scream "classic" to me. It comes with a sort of whimsical "Sgt. Pepper's" atmosphere, but just isn't as consistent. It's an album with brilliant highlights, but a couple of skippable tracks too.
Classic
I particularly liked the song 39. This was different from traditional Quuen songs
"Bohemian Rhapsody" is 5 minutes and 54 seconds of extravagant, lavish spectacle; some of the best pop music ever. I had never heard the album from whence it came, so I had very high expectations for the experience. "A Night at the Opera" was indeed 43 minutes of extravagant, lavish spectacle. It is a true tour de force. (Forgive me using that phrase, but it is absolutely appropriate here.) Maybe it was just a bit of sensory overload from all that spectacle today, but I really started to think about "Sheer Heart Attack," and I went back and listened to it, and I felt more at home with that album. Such a surprise. It's also perhaps time to confess that I have never liked "You're My Best Friend" with its "Ooh, you make-uh me live, now honey!" So what are you going to do? But there is much I love about this album, including the vitriolic "Death on Two Legs" transitioning immediately into the '20s (er, 1920s) music-hall-styled "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon." "'39" is a sweet song that I was not familiar with, but it's been the one I keep playing. I liked it even more when I learned it came from Brian May's background in astrophysics. Ending with their guitar-and-cymbals "God Save the Queen" is reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix's "Star Spangled Banner," and is the absolute perfect way to have ended this album.
SEASIDE RENDEZVOUS
I've never been a fan of Bohemian Rhapsody but the rest of the album is great. I love the different musical styles.
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The less famous songs were a refreshing change of pace to what I thought I knew about Queen.
I love Queen, Freddy Mercury will always be a great loss for music, but a Night At The Opera is not their best album in my opinion. Carried hard by some tracks.
I'm a big fan of piano riffs, guitar riffs, ethereal vocals, and bands with a slightly unique sound - it's therefore no surprise I really enjoyed this album. There are definite dud notes which stop it getting a 5, but lazing on a Sunday afternoon, prophet's song, and bohemian rhapsody (obviously) are enough to elevate this to a strong 4.
Yet another Queen classic.
Ravishing loud pop, capped by Bohemian Rhapsody. Don't forget - this was produced by Rav Sinclair! We sat at his Shabbat table in Israel.
Despite not even containing many of my favorite Queen songs (except Bohemian Rhapsody, obvs) this album still delivers. With Freddie's amazing voice, each song is interesting and enjoyable!
I was really looking forward to the listen because of Rhapsody, which is a GD national treasure. It started off great with Death on Two Legs. The rest was good with expressive drums and bass, and sharp melodic guitar, and amazing vocals. I know why I haven't heard of many of these songs, they don't stand out. But they work together in the album.
I was surprised to find that many of these songs didn't hold my attention. Obviously some classics here, "You're My Best Friend" and "Bohemian Rhapsody." Easy to hear why the songs that Freddy's not lead on have receded over time.
Two Queen albums in one week! I must say that while this album is quite an achievement, Queen's high energy theatrical bombast can be exhausting over the course of an entire album. They have individual songs which are these completely brilliant shining diamonds but I find that those songs are often so amazing that it's nearly impossible to maintain that level of output. So, perfectly decent songs that might be standout tracks on somebody else's album just end up being filler here. Also, the pacing seems a bit odd at times. All in all, those brilliant songs easily make up for any comparatively lackluster moments.
A couple of bangers and obviously it’s a good album but maybe not one I would choose to listen to all the way through.
// Favs: Bohemian Rhapsody Score: Decent to Strong 4
Love it
Quirky, high energy
I have never been the biggest fan of the song "Bohemian Rhapsody". To me it's just a messy mix of styles are are glued together poorly, though I won't deny it's quality. The rest of the album is overshadowed by this song and that is too bad as other songs ("Love of My Life") are also great. It's a nice mixture of ballads and power rock songs and a unicorn.
8/10
Some great and some ok songs
This album contains two of my favourite Queen songs (Bohemian Rhapsody and You're My Best Friend) as well as some other nice ones. It also contains some songs that... aren't winners for me (particularly '39 and The Prophet's Song). All in all I think it's a 3.5 for me, which I will round up because I have a soft spot for Queen.
it is great i actually think the first half is better has fillers but cant deny it is great
For me this is not the best Queen, but for sure is the album that has the best songs.
good songs on here….including one of the classics: bohemian rhapsody..
I remember listening to my crappy AM radio in bed many years ago when I was 13 yrs old and the DJ introduced this new song by Queen that was really “different”. I was only a kid but I realized that nothing was gonna be the same after Bohemian Rhapsody. That song changed my perception of music and it opened the door to prog, art rock and opera. BR is a 600 lb gorilla of a song and there are also a few other great tracks on this album but it just misses out on a perfect 5 score because there are a few clangers on it. I get that they wanted to be experimental and whimsical but the album is not 100% cohesive. But that 600 lb Gorilla though!
good album decent songs, its a shame bohemian rhapsody has become a cliche since everything else they make only lives in its shadow
Outstanding and much missed
Overall this banged, it was cool to hear bohemian rhapsody in the context of an album. I think some of the tracks were a little obnoxious- the intentionally overblown style can only do so much. 8/10
Good. I liked all of it, "You're my best Friend" being my favorite. I don't enjoy this as much as I do their earlier works. Still solid, though.
Better than I thought it would be. Nice cohesive album with some great songs and nice guitar parts.
Good album with some incredible standout tracks
Queen’s good songs are so good that they almost instantaneously erase all their mediocre ones. For example, a lot of people don’t know that “You’re My Best Friend” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” are the only two songs on this album. Kinda weird that they called it an album at all, but then Queen was always pretty weird! I mean, you saw that movie right?
Very grandiose and over-the-top, but in a good way. The hits I knew already, but Death On Two Legs was a nice surprise and might be my favorite songs after Bohemian Rhapsody. Album feels a little long, but maybe that was partly the echo parts halfway through Prophet's Song, which I would've saved if it wasn't for that Already Saved: Bohemian Rhapsody Saved After Listening: Death On Two Legs (Dedicated To…)*, You're My Best Friend, '39, God Save The Queen
1-Love the guitar throughout this first song and the structure of the song is very unique which I like a lot. 2- Clearly a jokey filler song but I didn't need to skip it. 3- Ok song with good instrumentation prefer it when Freddie takes the lead vocals. 4- Just a nice happy and vibey song, love the bassline to this too. 5- Country/folk song with some strange vocal breaks. This is probably my least favourite song so far. 6- Really disliked the chorus on this and found the whole song quite lackluster with no progression at all until the very end. 7- This song definitely does at it says, it really reminds me of going to the seaside. I wouldn't choose to listen to it on its own but its an enjoyable song in the context of the album. 8- Love the introduction to this song, and the rest of it. It feels very mysterious and dramatic, which is the style I love from queen. This song could definitely fit into a stage show or film. I think the acapella section in the middle of the song ruins it's listenability for me though. 9- A very iconic and beautiful piano ballad, I don't know what else I can say really apart from the Brian May's guitar in this song is just perfect. 10- This songs seems like it could just as easily have been written and performed by The Beatles. 11- One of if not the most iconic and amazing songs of all time, every part of it is perfect. 12- A nice closer to the album, which summarises the the themes pretty well.
This is a good album. It really mixes genres too - rock and like old timey sounding music - sometimes even treads on country. Freddie Mercury is outstanding. Greatest rock voice ever as well as the greatest band lead ever. Top tracks Death on two legs You’re my best friend 39 Iconic track Bohemian Rhapsody
4.25
YAS QUEEN
A better album than sheer heart attack. Has one of my favorite song, bohemian rhapsody.
Some crazy songs some classics
Beautifully crafted
Bohemian Rhapsody!! Orchestral effects! Brian May guitar riffs! A blending of genres under the umbrella of one album! Still, it gets to be a bit much with the silly lyrics, choral arrangements and overall heaviness. Good for the occasional listen in its entirety… Better deconstructed and placed into playlists. 3.5/5
Really enjoyed the unique tracks that were new to me. particularly Love of My Life and The Prophet Song. Fun album! 4.0
Best Songs: Death On Two Legs, The Prophet's Song, Bohemian Rhapsody Worst Songs: Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon, Seaside Rendevous
One of Queens' best. How can you not enjoy?
I resented having to listen to another queen album when there’s so much else out there in this wondrous world of music. It just got better and better though. Inventive songwriting, completely individual. You’re my best friend and Prophets song are absolute greats. It’s not their fault that Bohemian Rhapsody is so seared into our minds that we fail to remember what a ridiculously good piece of work it is. And why should we?! Nice to take a cold look at it though. It’s good. What’s the point of god save the queen here? Anyone? Is it an ode to Brian may doing it on top of the of the palace or wherever it was. Either way, I’m tempted to knock off a star for its inclusion. I won’t though.
The thing that hit me whilst listening to this is just how overblown and dramatic, histrionic even, Queen sound - and how varied their sound. How do they do this without seeming like they’re showing off (Deep Purple), or oppressively hostile towards anyone who doesn’t “get it” (Jethro Tull). I can’t fully expound on what I think makes them sound so good here, but I’ll try some of it. Firstly, I think they’d have made this album and made these songs regardless of who was listening - so the songs sound completely unselfconscious, and alligned with who they are as a band. And then there’s the tension between Mercury’s style (flamboyant, theatrical, pop-leaning), May’s style (just wants to solo basically. He barely plays unless it’s a really cool riff or a solo), Taylor’s style (to pound the drums as bigly as possible) - and we’ll just assume Deacon was, as all bassists are, just happy to be there. Each member so totally embodies their preferred mode, that the disparate elements suddenly snap and cohere into a totally unique sound. It’s alchemy, and it’s great.
Great!
Loved bohemian rapsody, best friend and few other. All the songs were very musically colourful
To start, these songs sounded like fragmented misfires with no concept to cohere around. But wha'd'ya know? Another listen and the concatenation started to appear. My mistake was looking for thematic links when--duh!-- they're all stylistic. Which style is... well... basically it's prog--pseudo-classical ideas (virtuoso instrumentalism and long songs broken into movements) fused with thrashing guitars and stomping drums--but not as I know it. In other words, it's good (sorry not sorry Jethro, Purple, Floyd, et al.). And it's good because (didn't I say this about Sheer Heart Attack too?) at the and time as being silly as fuck and gay as hell it's also serious as the dickens. That trio might not be brand new in popular music but where else can you find it in prog? Some have tried, most have failed. These chaps pulled it off. I'm not sure it's ever something that *needed* to be pulled off. But in practice I don't care. While it's on it seems absolutely vital.
Feels weird to do a 'yaaas queen' joke here but I really want to do I'm going to leave my review like this in memoriam
Another classic, a banger, beautiful with a lot of good songs
Death on Two Legs, I’m in Love with My Car, Sweet Lady, The Prophet’s Song и Рапсодия — балдеж.
Classic album
Nice
I grew up listening to "Greatest Hits", so I'm kind of biased on picking my favorite Queen album, but I still liked this one a lot.
Full, unrestrained personality. Queen just does Queen so well (I wonder why that is...) and I can't stop enjoying how simply great this is. The compositions are large and perfect for a sunny day. Just radiant, I love them. And the best part is that it never gets stale! Queen keeps things fresh from song to song, such as the lovely acoustic ballad '39 or the soft and sweet Love Of My Life. I would be remiss to not talk about Bohemian Rhapsody which, though sorely played out, is larger than life in it's own way. Overall great album. We could all use a little more Queen in out lives.
Des fois une musique de guitare au tour du feu, des fois un opéra, des fois une toune de générique de film, très varié et accrocheur. Freddy chante en ciboire, et les back vocals sont bons, le piano, l’orgue, toute. Alleluia
Pretty epic. Love of my life is beautiful. You're my best friend :)
Queen is a great band but not all the dramatic stuff works for me. Still there’s obviously some very good songs here. “I’m in Love With My Car” has still not grown on me.. sorry Roger
4/5
an all time classic
Fun album. Better than I expected honestly
Yass
J'adore Queen, en particulier pour les harmonies vocales. J'ai pas viré fou sur cet album, mais des Bohemian Rhapsody, ça court pas les rues Mon hit: SCARAMOUSH SCARAMOUSH WILL YOU DO THE FANDANGO

I'm not the biggest Queen fan, there stuff seems a little all over the place for me. But, I still recognize greatness when I hear it.
It's Queen. Some straight bangers. Some very dated cheese. Enjoyable listen even thought 40 years later some of the songs sound like a parody of the era.
Having in mind that Queen is not a band I listen to often, I still enjoyed this. 4/5 would listen to again
Strong lyrics and storytelling. Absolutely fantastic guitar and vocals. Can't say I liked much the songs without Freddy as lead vocalist, I think they actually dragged the album down. Great ability to keep songs fresh by adding variations and keeping them unpredictable. Impressive experimentation with different styles of music, exotic or old-timey vibes and instruments (Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon). Bohemian Rhapsody is an example of sheer musical creativity from musicians that have the talent to carry it to fruition. Loved also the adorable and iconic 'You're My Best Friend'.
false
Wow holy jeez, I understand the value of Brian May. This album sounds soooo well produced. First time sitting though the whole album, front to back. Pretty darn good.
Some great songs, some not so great songs. But I can't bear to give Queen less than four stars
Never listened to this one the full way through. Truly one of a kind.
\m/
I completely understand where bohemian rhapsody came from now and definitely more into queen than before. It was interesting to hear how many different genres they dove into.
Yaaasss queen
Near perfect album! Love a bit of Queen.
Some classics. Also some clangers
Good stuff
Closer to a 4.5! Great album. Arguably the greatest singer.
Loved the sound and feel
good
Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?
Killer album
Tykkäsin. En ollut aikaisemmin kuunnellut ko. levykokonaisuutta.
I love queen, this album have some amazing tracks but also some that I don't find brillant...
Storslået, kor, karismatisk, 70’er pop/rock, Freddie Mercury
Pretty good, better than I expected but you know what? Bohemian Rhapsody is overrated. There. I said it.
a classic, I feel like the front half pales compared to the ladder half and why I can't give it a perfect score, def deserving of this list
9/10. album is cool. overdramatic but in a fun way. love the music hall shit on here i think its really when the albums fun theatric spirit shines the most. not talked-to-death fav: '39. really good. folk music is good. talked-to-death fav: b*henian ratsody. you know why this song is good
A Night at the Opera presents the final step in what would become Queen's endgame, their transformation into a singles band. But what an album to present to the masses in the changing tides of rock music. This album almost pretty much lives up to its name, from their final turn towards prog madness to powerful odes to love and beyond and the defining song that basically signals their shift towards immortality. One doesn't need to own or listen to another Queen album, this is practically all they need to understand. Favorites: Death on Two Legs, I'm in Love With My Car, You're My Best Friend, '39, The Prophet's Song, Love of My Life, Bohemian Rhapsody.
It's got Bohemian Rhapsody but even without it its is a pretty good album.
heard it a few times before, really good album, just good classic Queen. some whimsical freddie numbers, some balls-out rockin brian songs, 4/5.
Skulle vært 4 eller?
Meh
Never thought Queen had a killer album. There had always been too many discrepancies between the operatic and rock influences which make for awkward listening. Definitely more of a singles band in my opinion and this album didn’t change that perception. Sweet Lady, 39, You’re my Best Friend are ace. I’m in love with my car has some of the worst lyrics imaginable over some of the best music on the album.
First time listening to a Queen album coming from the perspective of someone who feels fatigue each time a Queen song (Cool Cat excluded) comes on the radio. Most clear aspect of this album is the wide range of musical exploration; jaunty vaudeville tunes, sea shanties, rock operas, religious a capellas. Such wide diversity is often united by Freddie Mercury’s recognizable vocals, along with the precise musicality of the band, although there are moments where other voices take the vocal lead. The lyrics themselves, besides in the scathing opener “Death On Two Legs” and the ecclesiastical “Prophet Song”, often come off as nonsensical or arbitrary, and if not either of those, then leaning heavily on trite lyricism borne from a song’s musical influence. In this way, the lack of unity or linearity throughout this album, made clear by the aforementioned musical range, is exacerbated by uninteresting lyricism. It is clear that, to Queen, the singer’s role is largely instrumental, rather than confessional or story-weaving, which is not inherently a negative. Still, A Night At The Opera feels a bit to disjointed for my personal tastes (although the transition from “Death On Two Legs” to “Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon” made me laugh). In this way, I have some trouble imagining returning to this album as a whole listen, especially because I am not particularly enamored by vaudeville tunes, sea shanties, or falling in love with one’s car. Some songs I did enjoy: “Death On Two Legs”—hilariously petty and scathing; “The Prophet Song”—unexpected prog rock to break up the album, very fun a capella; and, of course, “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Final thought: maybe it’s due to my lack of experience with Queen’s albums, but when you encounter incredible hits like Bohemian Rhapsody as a single, I don’t think it unreasonable to expect a similar level of musical depth from the rest of the album, which is not really what I experienced here. I think a more full embrace of that nonsensical operatic sound would have made this album more cohesive, more compelling, and more like a night at the opera!
half of this was good but i found some of it to be kind of boring….
Nothing really matters to meeee I have feeling most of the songs were a bit boring. Maybe they’re just wasn’t matching my taste or I didn’t have the right mood for listening to that album When you listen to the whole album in one row, all the songs are mixing together and start sound the same I would say 7.6/10 I’ve really heard better
Listening to this album in one sitting confirmed a couple things for me... -Queen are a singles band. They have a few fantastically great songs, and a lot of...other songs. -Freddie Mercury is, by far, the best thing about this band. The rest of the guys are virtuosic musicians, but also unbelievably dorky and tasteless. -I resent that Queen achieved super-canonic status over the past 15 years or so (when/why did it become normal to refer to "The Beatles and Queen"?). They're definitely a great rock band, but I feel like they've been elevated by chauvinists who believe the best music is the most complex music.
The demographic for Queen is people who were alive to hear them on the radio and band kids who haven’t discovered hip hop yet.
A Night at the Opera is a decent album that went down in history for its great production and a few timeless songs that make most of the tracks this album comprises feel like comparative filler. Freddy Mercury’s voice sounds amazing throughout, which is to be expected, and the vocal layering that this album is so influential for makes many of the otherwise just-alright songs on this much more enjoyable because of the crisp, theatrical production. You're My Best Friend, Seaside Rendezvous, and Good Company are good examples of this—decently fun songs elevated greatly by that delightful production. Unfortunately, the songwriting on many of these songs is fairly lackluster, which is disappointing considering that this album may as well be called “The One Bohemian Rhapsody is From.” Fellow prog-rockish song The Prophet’s Song joins that star penultimate track in embodying the innovative genre-blending this album is known so well for, and softer tracks Love of My Life and even ‘39 feel like perhaps the only tracks on here with it that deserve their place on an album with the legendary Bohemian Rhapsody, a fantastic song that shines as the highlight of this album and probably of Queen’s career. Being preceded by some of the better, more ambitious songs on this album helps makes it a special moment when its vocal intro ushers in this famous many-would-say-masterpiece that epitomizes and transcends everything that this album is known for. It alone made this album difficult to rate and shifted its score up fairly significantly for me. It would’ve made a far more potent ending to this album than the odd choice of God Save the Queen. There's a lot of good stuff on here, and it sounds great throughout, but a lot of the songs are just not that substantial next to the classics this album is remembered for. The inconsistency makes this album a difficult one to rate, but… it’s a low 3 stars overall. Rating: ~5.5/10 ____ Album 6 / 1001+
I do appreciate Queen very much from an objective perspective, they're truly one of the greatest musical groups of all time. But in come my subjective ears. Unfortunately, they don't really care for Queen outside the radio hits that have been drilled into our psyches for so long that it's impossible not to bop along to them out of familiarity. Of course, the famous Rhapsody, Love Of My Life, You're My Best Friend - these are amongst the best of all time - but I just don't get the feels for the car song, the prophet's song, or any other of the non-radio hits. And it's crazy because I can tell they're all fantastic songs - they just don't pull at my heart.
Not sure it's for me. Great album and some of the most iconic songs, I mean Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the best songs ever. It felt a bit disjointed at the beginning but I also don't know if that's because I know a lot of songs out of the context of the album so they popped out in quite a stark way.
Bohemian Rhapsody.
Too theatrical, too twee, too overblown. 3.5 stars
I've never been too high on this album. It's good, but I don't really get it's classic status. "Bohemian Rhadsody" and "You're My Best Friend" are great, and you get a couple more solid deep cuts in "'39" and "Sweet Lady", but the rest? I'm not convinced. You get some of Freddie's excursions into granny rock and some mid rockers like "The Prophet's Song" and "I'm In Love With My Car". 3.5 stars.
A surprising amount of songs here feel like throat clearing until the show stopper at the 11th hour
theater kid music,, wanted to say it’s not for me but then i’m hypocritical bc i love imaginal disk,,, something to think abt. but some are surprisingly unlistenable
Interesting but odd. Not sure I ever understood Queen
Im going to get booed, but i just think Queen are a singles band. Yes their production and breadth of instrumentation are impressive and yes Freddie is one of the best front men ever and yes Boh Rap is incredible. But this isnt an album with any consistency, its all over the place in terms of genre and songwriting quality and i found it a difficult listen
A Night at the Opera is a half good. A bit weak overall and lands on the list primarily for "Bohemian Rhapsody." And of course it does. The rest of the songs could have been complete trash and the album would still make it... the song is that important and a must listen by all humans before death. "Your My Best Friend" also carries weight but is totally dwarfed by BR and you almost forget it's even on there. Queen took some notes from Beatles albums and added light hearted tunes like "Good Comapny" and "Lazin' on a Sunday Afternoon" which I quite enjoyed. The boys have better ones but it's still Queen and rocks...2.95 stars.
Queen does it again on the 1001. Despite this album being all over the place (in a good way) every song felt fully realized. I don't feel like they stitched a couple B-sides in to pad the album. You can tell they were dedicated to each and every note whether it was a prog-rock jam, a somewhat hammed up vocal pop song or an operatic masterpiece like Bohemian Rhapsody. There is little to no filler (maybe I'm In Love With My Car) as Queen continued to establish themselves as a unique top of the charts act. Freddy will always be the star of the vocal show, but the rest of the band has always been amazing with supporting harmonies that hugely layer the lyrics and instrument tracks. It was also cool to get some lead vocals from May and Taylor that I never would have expected. The backing tracks on guitar, piano, and whatever else they throw at it always adds to the whole affair. Regardless of how you feel about each individual piece it hard to deny that everything Queen was doing on this one was interesting. The album is diverse and fun from front to back. Always been a fan of Queen's greatest hits but these guys continue to surprise me with their albums. Glad they got three entries on here and I wouldn't be upset if they got another. 3.28 stars
Another good Queen album. Probably their masterpiece.
Not my first listen but this cements my feelings that Queen work better as a singles band than an album one for my tastes. When they hit, they hit hard. When they miss, I find them really grating. There’s a reason more than half of these tracks never get active radio play anymore. Would rate it 3.5 if I could.
I got respect for Queen just off of a lot of their hits, but this album in particular just aint fully hooking me. Yeah its got 2 of their biggest hits but I just can't lock in with half the songs here regardless if they have a solo here or a cool idea there. I've listened to a couple albums of their in the past (Sheer Heart Attack, News of the World) that I remember enjoying a lot more overall. 6.5, maybe a 7/10.
Kind of meanders a bit between genres and it's not all inspired. I'm In Love With My Car is definitely a song with lyrics. Favourite track: Bohemian Rhapsody of course
First album selected is a re-listen, but one I haven’t heard in two decades, so I was due another look. Never a personal favorite band, but at their peak, they were undeniably capable of delivering transcendental moments of operatic hard rock excess, which this album achieves often. Standout moment: the unexpected gentle pastoral folk of ‘39. Not a mode I associate with Queen, but it comes at the right point in the album as a breather between the more bombastic tracks.
so the important background context is that I hate bohemian rhapsody. A lot of this I think is due to the fact that the “glebe crew” (a bunch of people in my grade at school) would always reach a point in the night when they were having parties where they would do a singalong of this, wonderwall and nosebleed section, which was normally a sign for me to leave, and that has stayed with me. There’s about 30 seconds towards the end of the song that I quite like, and I always forget about that, but can’t stand the rest. As for the rest of the album, I appreciate that there’s a lot of variety and a few songs I enjoyed. Favourite was I’m In Love With My Car and unexpectedly ‘39. there are more queen songs I think I like elsewhere in the catalogue
Would listen again.
This is good. But i guess im not all that huge on queen i guess. Freddy's voice is iconic and powerful to the nth degree but im not all that into it. And this is supposedly the best they got right? And dont get me wrong there are absolute classic tracks here. Bohemian rhapsody? Come on, thats one of the most popular songs of all time. And I think its good too. Im just less into the performance aspect of it. The themeing is great, it does feel like a night at the opera. Nails it. But im not sure thats my vibe. Too showy and theatrical for me. Like sweet lady is the most overtly rock track here and it might be my favorite. Maybe i like other more rock centric albums from these guys, I dont know but I know this isnt my favorite. I did like it. I promise. As much as it sounds like I had a bad time no way. I liked it pretty well. Just there are alot of things here that dont go over that well. The guitars and drums all feel kinda burried in the mix. They just lack the punch they deserve. But anyway its a good record that is above average, for me it might bot be that much above that bar.
i own this album on vinyl. it's pretty solid, and bohemian rhapsody's on it, so it's automatically a 3.5. it's not a great album album, but it's pretty good.
songs I enjoyed: you're my best friend '39 bohemian rhapsody
"Best Friend" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" are the obvious stars of this record, but there is a non-single worth mentioning - "39" is a pretty ditty composed and sung by Brian May. The rest are either prog/rock songs or ballads or skiffle/music hall toss-offs. Kind off disappointing really, only buoyed by their original production sound and style.
There was some recent discourse on Twitter about how some bands (like the Cure or Smiths) are "singles bands" which is a totally ridiculous notion. Mainly because Queen is the real singles band. There's like 3 good songs here surrounded by a bunch of middling to bad ones
It's Queen, some GOAT songs, but there's a reason I've never heard some of these before
Fun album – there are a few well-known tracks on it too, haha. Three stars...

Do I just not like Queen?
kind of weird that all of the songs i liked from this were either written by or sung by someone in queen that wasn’t freddie mercery. i will this album suffers from one song being leagues above the rest in quality (bohemian rhapsody) (this happens a lot)
The first three Queen albums are pretty damn good, their 4th is the moment I find myself no longer a fan. There are undoubtedly some high moments, but there's also too much ragtime musical filler nonsense. I understand that the innovation and the revolutionary production techniques are what forms this albums reputation, and Bohemian Rhapsody certainly underpins this, but the metal and hard rock edge of earlier releases are largely missing from the rest of the album. Definitely operatic rock
Considering I was raised on Queen, I very guiltily admit they are not really one of my favourite bands. I went into this with an open mind as it has been years since I'd listened to a Queen album in full but I fear this isn't one of the best ones?? Despite being one of the famous ones. It's camp and fun which you would expect with queen, but it's pretty meandering and there's quite a few duds. Obvs Bohemian Rhapsody isn't one of the duds - not a controversial opinion there.
There's a reason that Queen are best known for their singles. This is a mess! I thought that The Prophet's Song would never end! That said, it's kind of a fun mess. So completely all over the shop that I almost enjoyed seeing what the hell they were gonna come out with next. Weird faux-prog-folk? Spinal Tap-esque prehistoric silliness? A vaudeville picture postcard jaunt? I dunno how you can review a song like You're My Best Friend' that's been so tainted by Magic FM that it's ceased to be music, but against all odds this was sorta fun.
Classic
Not exactly my thing, but i see why people like it
Well, bohemian rhapsody is one of the greatest songs of all time, but the rest of the album is much weaker compared to it
Review - not quite the case where it's only the songs I know that are good, but I was surprised how many truly naff songs were on this album. However, I now know that The Prophets Song is the thinking man's Bohemian Rhapsody. Rating - 5/10 Need to hear? YES
I love Queen! Unfortunately, Bohemian Rhapsody carried this album. I love the history of this experimental album, but it didn't quite work for me.
Has a lot of solid tracks as well as the famous Bohemian Rhapsody. 7/10
