When I was at university I met a girl towards whom I felt an instant attraction. Funny, cool, beautiful and whip-smart, perhaps her only ostensible failing was that she seemed to take a shine to me. That, and she loved Manu Chao. Imagine, my friends, how exhilarated I felt to have managed to make it to her bedroom. Imagine how deflating it was to learn that she couldn't wait to turn me onto 'Clandestino'. Listening again to this brings back pungent memories of nodding along, muttering crap like "yeah, this is some dope shit" and feeling like I was slowly going insane through a combination of young lust, desperation and in-the-moment loathing of Manu Chao. Anyway, I mellowed and she went on to work for the Conservative Party. I don't hate 'Clandestino' as much as I did back then, but it still sucks. I think 'Bongo Bong' was used in an old Fifa game.

There are a couple of decent party tunes on here, but otherwise it didnt do much for me

This was fine. I'd listened to a bit of Manu Chao before when I was a teenager (it was the exotic international stuff that you listened to because you thought it made you look sophisticated rather than because you actually enjoy it). It's great background music for a bar somewhere where it's sunny, the sea isn't far away, and you're sipping cocktails. Unfortunately I'm in my home office in Bethnal Green and I'm sipping a cold coffee (cold because I made it about an hour ago, not because it's supposed to be). Sun's shining though... Still, not really for me, fine to stick on the background but nothing more. 2/5.

Cela dit c'est pas désagréable non plus, je peux comprendre qu'on nous l'ai servi dans tous les cafés un peu hippie depuis sa sortie, ça passe un peu inaperçu et c'est pas dérangeant

The album starts well and is interesting and restrained. Though hitting bongo bong is a hard no, and the rest of the album is up and down... some spoken work interruptions and luna y sol is a bit irritating. Ultimately, i'll steer away from it.

Mostly background music in a bar on holiday. Bongo Bong was massive though. If it was a footballer, it'd be Lee Hendrie strawpedoing a tropical Reef, then pissing his pants a couple of hours later.

It was just alright for me. Didn't hate it, didn't love it. 2.5 stars.

En un principio me dio gusto ver un álbum latino en la lista; luego noté que en realidad es francés y que es aburrido y repetitivo. Incluso para tratar de ser un mensaje de paz o de diversidad o lo que sea (con todo y Subcomandante Marcos) el mensaje es monótono y poco ingenioso.

Close to a 3 star, didn’t like the final few songs but was good until that point.

This album has most of the hallmarks of Modern Spanish Music. That being said, Manu has made a name for himself by pushing the genre to wider audiences. Even still, this album does little to push the genre further, or even deviate from mild influences of Cuban Jazz or a Latin Beat.

Really respect the work that went into this - for a person to write an album in NINETEEN NINETY EIGHT using basically only a laptop is impressive. So is his ability to sing and write in so many languages. That said, the album still didn’t hit me. I’m glad to hear this album, but it didn’t resonate. Gotta give it 2 (2.5?) stars.

I want to like this album, but for some reason I think it's just ok. Something about the weird sounds coming in different ears for a lot of the songs. Not rating this lower b/c it's in another language, but more so b/c I didn't like the actual music? Actually impressive it's got like four different languages on this album

The article said he tested songs on children when building this album. Congratulations, you made an album that sounds like an album of children's songs. The article mentioned the album being full of sound bites, but the only one that I noticed was the 80's era video game bomb-dropping sound, which was used repeatedly throughout the album, but is gimmicky enough that it ony should have been used on one song, maybe briefly on a second one as an intentional forshadow/throwback. Nah, this wasn't good.

I know enough Spanish to know what he's singing about, but this i just the same riff over and over again. It's reggae lite. It is whole unworthy of a place here. Period.

With so many brilliant Latin recordings in the world, Dimery chooses one with no energy, no passion, and no virtuosity (the three characteristics that define great Latin music). This has more in common with the other 90s albums on this list than it does with great Latin albums: a stoner of questionable talent wrapped in 90s studio gimmickery to create limp and lifeless hipster pop. There are easily 1000 Latin albums everyone should hear before they die; this isn't even on THAT list.

Har ikke overvundet mig Har hørt albummet 2-3 gange. Synes det er fedt med blandingen af sprogene, men er ikke særlig vild med mixen, der falder lidt fladt og hvor upoleret albummet lyder som en helhed.

This was another one of those albums where I have no idea what’s going on but it sounded pretty entertaining and I could see people listening to this pretty often. However without knowing what is being said and cultural context this could an album that just the list maker likes and isn’t that good. I don’t think it’s standing out either way. 2.9/10

I heard the name before, but didn't know the guy. So I somehow thought this would just be our 200th random US or UK Indie rock album. Unfortunately, it's much worse than that. According to Wiki, this is Raeggae Rock. While I like rock, I don't like it nearly as much as I loathe raeggae. I listened to the larger part of the first 10 tracks, until I allowed myself to stop torturing myself. Calling the vocals understated is a huge understatement. These raeggae people aren't even trying to make music with any semblence of either skill or passion. The instrumentation, while minimal, has more to offer than raeggae normally does. I guess that's the representative rock component? The one track I already knew, Bongo Bong, is extremely annoying [even more than the rest of the album] - does anyone actually enjoy this, or is it only considered a meme song?

I always wondered where that awful "King of the Bongos" song came from and now I know. Imagine my horror when I realised that the shitty bongo song was actually the best part of this album. This is the sort of music buskers play to be paid to stop. I really hated this from start to finish. I guess I just don't like world music, but there was literally nothing here for me to enjoy.

This seems like something that I would enjoy a lot but I find it remarkably mid. everything is overtly safe and doesn't really stretch far from what I'd expect to hear from some CASIO preset keyboard grooves. Until now I had been relatively happy with the "world music" givings from this list but now I'm starting to understand why it's so notorious. Some particular gripes because I'm going to force myself through the whole thing: The 3rd and 4th song could have easily been cut into 1/4 the length and combined. That way they wouldn't have been offensively bad at least And the lyrics of the 3rd one? Was this taken from a child's beginner french 1 textbook? Hell I think you could say that about a lot of the lyrics. I would even love to say that this album can at least be carried by the good guitar playing and rythms but the fact that they NEVER change is, like, absurd. Song 7 is yet again painfully basic in all of it's composition, the best I could give this is the vocal production at least is a little more interesting compared to the rest so far. Shout out to the russian space race news broadcast clip too Song 8 seems to have picked up a bit finally, but again, suffers from a lot of the previous problems... Maybe if this tried a bit harder to lean into the reggaeton/club vibe and style I'd be willing to forgive this song but when the production is also so lo-fi it's really impossible to say this. Was song 9 an unfinished file that somehow got put on the CD? Song 10 at least serves as a reminder as to why you should pay your session musicians Track 12 gave me a lot of hope. This album has really had to work for the single star that I'm going to rate it and this track and a couple others are its only workhorses

By track four I had become seriously fed up with this irritating noise. Not worth using the electricity to play was my opinion at rhat point. From then on things got worse. Trite, meaningless and tedious songs with very overworked vocal patterns make this an album to miss. Teria sido muito melhor se ficou clandestino mesmo.

C’est assez monotone comme album. Chaque chanson démarre comme un genre de loop et il chante/parle par dessus. Il n’y a pas de formes, pas de nuances, pas de modulation, à peine une petite progression harmonique par-ci par-là. Des fois, on change de toune et le loop ne change même pas.

Latin music is not typically my thing, and I even found this sound more blasé than usual. I would love to pretend like it was profound or moved me, but I just wanted it to be over. 1/5
