10/10 holy oeak
Absolutely loved it, summarize this album to bland britpop is stupid, it sounds like nothing else in this list.
very nice, very rock and roll heh!!! ammmiright chaps?
Top top album
Classic album
Suede is getting a low 5, i’ve heard bits of it done before (smiths, echo and the bunnymen) and bits repeated since (yes you Radiohead), but it all sound so fresh to me.
Suede were one of the big 4 Britpop groups of the 90s, and the one I listened to least. I only knew Animal Nitrate on here, and that's quite criminal from my aspect, because while Oasis gave us two fingered Northern attitude, Pulp gave us songs about sex and Blur gave us depression, it turns out that Suede gave us an absolute gem of a mature debut. This album scores highly on musicality, with songs can rock out (like Moving), and be movingly beautiful (Sleeping Pills and The Next Life) with lyrics that seem to come from a far greater experience of life than any of these artists could have had. There is a singer in Bret Anderson that can deliver both types of song, and the album just flows beautifully. So glad I was directed towards this. Absolutely 5 stars.

5/5 büttbercore
Yes, I think I will be giving this album five stars. It feels silly to imagine doing anything else as I (re-)listen to it. The guitar work across this whole record is simply sublime. Hasn't aged a day, sound-wise. The first two songs are a ridiculous one-two punch, but it doesn't let up after that. Even the slower tracks are hard for me (me!) to tune out. I'm not sure that I have much else to say. It is simply that good. Favorite tracks: So Young, Animal Nitrate, Sleeping Pills, Metal Mickey
Suede’s debut album is a work defined by attitude, style, and exceptional song-writing. From the moment of its release, for me, it has remained an enjoyable and effortless listen; as a debut, it is remarkably cohesive, flowing seamlessly from beginning to end. Across the eleven tracks, there is a sophisticated variety of mood and dynamics. The "one-two punch" of "So Young" and "Animal Nitrate" provides a brilliant opening, immediately establishing Brett Anderson’s vivid lyrical imagery. While much is often made of the Anderson-Butler song-writing partnership on their first two records, the rhythm section of Mat Osman (bass) and Simon Gilbert (drums) is frequently underrated. They provide the essential foundation that underpins the entire work. This album marks the start of an excellent three-album run. The highlights include the aforementioned opening tracks, along with 'Pantomime Horse', 'The Drowners', and 'Metal Mickey'. However, for me, the standout remains the closing track, 'The Next Life'. Suede remain a formidable band to this day, consistently releasing high-quality material. They also remain an outstanding live act; their 1996 performance at The Roundhouse in London during the "Coming Up" tour remains in my top ten best gigs. Five stars. 1 "So Young" (5/5) 2 "Animal Nitrate" (5/5) 3 "She's Not Dead" (4/5) 4 "Moving" (4/5) 5 "Pantomime Horse" (5/5) 6 "The Drowners" (5/5) 7 "Sleeping Pills" (4/5) 8 "Breakdown" (4/5) 9 "Metal Mickey" (5/5) 10 "Animal Lover" (4/5) 11 "The Next Life" (5/5) Total - 50 Average - 4.55 325/1001 177/325 albums reviewed were new to me.
One of several fabulous Britpop (if you like) albums released in 1993 and 1994, and one of the earlier from that scene overall. There's an occasional touch of the Madchester influence from the turn of the decade now and again, but this moved things on, and was undoubtedly impactful on what happened in the later 90s. One of the best from 93-94, to my tastes. It's a great album - proper indie-guitar-band magical alchemy (despite, apparently, the producer taming their live energy somewhat). Bernard Butler's playing is just yummy, and the songs (beautifully paced) and the energy are cool.
Absolutely fantastic. Vocals admittedly took some getting used to, but everything was superb. Well crafted consistently song strongs, great instrumentation, i loved the wide variety in emotional expression as well, as in some songs were slow and others were more upbeat. All worked out superbly
You get some favourite albums in this list, but then there are FAVOURITES. I hadn’t realised this sat in the latter category until today. When this came out, it just sounded different, emotionally charged, mysterious and exciting. But what does your 17yr old self have to compare it with, not much. I know now there a lot of obvious influences, but you know what, it still sounds mysterious and exciting to this day and that’s all that counts. The Butler/Anderson combo here is just fantastic, both letting each other express themselves fully (it’s just a shame this was basically it). So many great tracks, and I always forget what a stunner ‘Pantomime Horse’ is. Chapeau!
Edgy for the sake of being edgy. 5/5
this whole list sure would look a lot different without this album!!!! as with many early entries in a genre, its cool to see britpop in its fresh iterative stages here...pulling from bowie, the smiths, and (i insist) the kinks to create this fresh palate of identity and ideas. much like dog man star, i love the songwriting but am a little distanced by the muddy mixing...less of an issue here tho, thanks to the simpler arrangements. this still rly Rly works as loud, blown-up rock music...decadent and anthemic and self-destructive, and just full tilt emotionality at pretty much all times. i can understand finding it overbearing, but its hard for me to not love this stuff. big Me And Who album
obsessed
I know there's the anachronism that the best music you've ever heard came out when you were 16, but god, 1993 was such a great year for music. I still get the neck-chills listening to this album, thirty years on. Wonderfully evocative lyrics full of council-estate glamour and some beautiful music anchoring it all, pivoting from glam thrash to Eno-y ambience on the opening minute of Pantomime Horse. 4.5/5, only because Dog Man Star does what this does, but even better.
Damn fine album.
I was hesitant going in, but the mesmerizing guitars are just too good. They consistently make the entire album for me and I just absolutely adore the melodies they swirl all throughout. One thing that turns me off about Brit-Pop are the nauseous vocals, but Brett Anderson doesn't go too over the top and delivers some insanely catchy performances. The record is incredibly consistent, and I just adore the songwriting and individual tracks in every aspect. Zero skips and an absolute beauty of an album in its entirety.
Beautiful album. Big fan, never knew I needed this in my life.
very radiohead like
A vital debut that still sounds amazing
Heard it before. I haven't listened to it in quite some time and I think it matches my mood today perfectly. Funnily enough I got Dog Man Star from the generator before and said in my review that I like it better than Suede's debut album, giving it 4/5. But today something is telling me that Suede's first album is a 5/5. Maybe it really is the other way round actually 5/5
why is this band a secret?
Brett Anderson, putting the pieces together of Poly Styrene & Morrissey, & backed by instrumentals that are at once distorted & clear, upbeat & minor, proves that the best pop music doesn't 'go pop' - it simply falls into place and hits the right chords. Suede's debut is undoubtedly in the pantheon of great punk records & the most slamming pop albums, w/ a bit of poetry/art in the mix (this is where the Smiths comparisons occur): 'I was born as a pantomime horse / Ugly as the sun when he falls to the floor'; 'Where the canine in the a-line stole your time / You can only go so far for womankind.' In short, Suede is unexpectedly beautiful, perhaps in the vanguard of the Britpop crusade, but really a sui generis event, a tulip in scuffed-up locales.
I absolutely loved this. Super hooky songs and incredible guitar work throughout, just a little bit outside but still way catchy. Favorite track: Pantomime Horse (but also The Drowners?)
Great!!
Whilst a lot of people think Britpop is best personified by Blur or Oasis, I think Suede are the most Britpoppiest of all Britpop. They were cleverer than Oasis, less self-aware and ironic than Blur, more vital and interesting than Pulp, and just a really good, tight band. It helps that this soundtracked my late teens and early twenties, but this is a really good album.
omg jag kommer ihåg att jag gick långa promenader i gubbängen när jag var 15 och lyssnade på det här! haha så emo älskar fortfarande!!
I like it. It conveys mourning for me.
I had never heard of this band let alone this album. But it is exactly what I like. Listened to it while snowboarding. Excellent.
This still sounds as great as it did in 93, and the band has a great 3 album run, with a B-side collection that is even better. I went to see them on this tour with two opening bands - The Cranberries and another band who just released their first album, the Counting Crows.
Favourite album
The Apple Music bio actually says it perfectly: “…the (Britpop) movement was actually born in an explosion of glitter, androgyny, and misfit deviance—all thanks to Suede.” Great album, right up there with the best of Pulp, Blur, or Oasis.
Before: It's a five. I already know this. This was one of my favorite albums back when it came out and it still is. There'e a decent chance it would be in my 100 essential albums list. During: Favorite songs are So Young, She's Not Dead, Pantomime Horse, The Downers, Sleeping Pills, and Breakdown. Those are all solid 5s. Animal Nitrate, Moving, Metal Mickey, Animal Lover, and The Next Life are 4s. After: So, before this exercise, I had 5 tracks from this album on my best of 1993 playlist, but decided to add three more so now I have 8 from this album on that list. It's definately one of my top 3 albums from 1993. The other 2 contenders are Stereolab's Transient Random-Noise Bursts With Announcements, and The Breeders', Last Splash.
I'm a sucker for anything I can imagine my parents listening to on the 80s/90s, and this album easily satisfies that criteria. This is a brilliant early brit-pop album with an incredible flow & variety throughout the run of tracks. It starts with two belters that I remember hearing during my childhood, and it continues apace with a fantastic selection of brit-pop songs showing shades of Bowie. The instrumentals and vocals are interesting and well thought of throughout, making the album a brilliant surprise for me.
Absolute gem! I am a big fan of Britpop music, so I am surprised I hadn’t heard this before. I loved how the songs all were different from each other, and how they all had hooks with their guitar riffs. There are also no bad songs on the album.
Brilliant. Hadn’t listened to this in at least 15 years, fantastic record
An early example of what would become britpop, and a damn good one at that. 4.5 bumped up to 5.
I’m at a 4.5 that I’ll bump up to a 5. Not bad at all for the “first ever Britpop” album, as they’re seemingly calling it. The DNA for the genre is here in spades, though obviously not as bombastically & cinematically refined as other bands would make it seem down the line, with a lot more of the late 80s lingering here. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. This is the first of two Suede albums we’ll get on the list, and I’m pretty impressed. In terms of the soundscapes, there’s strong hints of The Cure, The Smiths (yes, very small praise for Morrissey here, ew) & David Bowie, which are mixed with a little bit of an acoustic grunge flair to create a good base for future forms of Britpop, yet one that sticks out pretty uniquely for 1993 all the same. Lyrically, I’m impressed by just how androgynous this album comes across as for most of its tracks – if you’re paying close attention, there’s never really an applied gender to the protagonist on a lot of these tracks, which lines up with the relatively ambiguous album art. Even one like “Metal Mickey”, where it clearly takes place in a strip club, could just as easily be about a woman impressed by the lady dancing in front of her (though his/her/their dad being there with them is awkward regardless). “Pantomime Horse” is a real standout in terms of the androgyny, with that line “Have you ever tried it that way?” acting as a plea to give a same-sex relationship a shot. For 1993, I just like how much of an openly forward thinking album this is, and for it to have sold as fast as it did in the UK gives me some hope that genderlessly applied love can come back into vogue someday. Vocally, I think it’s alright; maybe the “weakest” part of the album (relatively), but Brett Anderson is still good, occasionally bringing to mind a higher pitched Bowie, knowing when to turn up the intensity & when to just follow the slower wind. He never has a moment where he sticks out in a sort of dazzling way, but he never feels like a hindrance, so he’s clearly doing something right. So, why a 4.5 then? Just a few longer outros & occasionally repetitive bits, that’s all. “Animal Lover” didn’t click for me, but that’s just because it feels more like flash than actual substance, given the nature of the track. Other than that though, the rest of this album is genuinely great, and I enjoyed it a lot. I really hope “Dog Man Star” is even better as a followup, but as far as this goes, it’s a 4.5 that I’ll easily bump up to a 5. Just a super fun listen.
9/10 The beginning of Britpop? I'd say yes. Bernard Butler with his jangly riffing jostling with Brett Anderson's vocals across an album of melodic indie rock. Was massive for me and so very cool.
Of all the bands considered Brit-pop, Suede are probably my favourite. I was already familiar with this album and I love the glam, haunted sound of Brett Andersons vocals and the beautiful distorted guitars. While other Brit-pop bands were a mix of the Beetles and The Stone Roses, Suede feels more like a mix of Bowie and The Smiths.
Good
Mjög góð plata, fersk og flott. Með betri fulltrúum Britpopsins á þessum lista.
great record. i had the tape as a teenager but had to hide it from my older brothers cause of the artwork lol
Did not listen enough! Det er pisse godt! Efter at have lyttet til albummet 3 gange er jeg klar til at afgive min dom! Jeg kendet et par af numrene inden, men albummet er så dragende at jeg blev ved med at ville høre det igen.
Cabrón está chido
I don’t think I ever consciously listened to this but it feels so familiar. Like a warm hug, that kind of rock that aligns with your pulse. The world definitely was better in 1993. I love this, so perfectly nostalgic.
Searched for diamond, found peak
ive always been intrigued by the murky production, it works but ive always wondered how rad itd sound if it didnt sound like it was mixed underwater. still flawless since i love it the way it is.
Often overshadowed by “bigger” bands of the time, Suede were in a class of their own. Holds up well 30+(!) years later
What a debut. 'So Young' and 'Animal Nightrate' are a magnificent opening couplet, a real statement of intent. Edgy glam, full of back street neon glow atmosphere, full of attitude and full of riffs. 'She's Not Dead' drops the pace and is gorgeous, 'Moving' picks it straight back up with thunderous drums and frantic guitar, Brett rides the wave. 'The Drowners' has that mighty riff, maybe my favourite live track of theirs. 'Metal Micky' was the first single of theirs I bought. It still sounds magnificent. Things drop a bit but the guitars on 'Animal Lover' are great and 'The Next Life' is a wonderful closer. One of their very best, and most moving songs. There are a few weaker tracks but this is still a wonderful album. I've only seen them live with Richard Oakes, and while they were great I wish I'd seen them live early on with Bernard Butler too. 9.5 gets marked up x
90s English alternative rock. Considered one of first Britpop albums. Really explores the whole genre, fantastic.
10/10
Pleasant surprise. Made me feel nostalgic for this time even though I’d never heard of this group or album. I liked it!
This is #day283 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… you should've seen the look on my wife's face when I showed her what album I got this morning. She's very much into Brett Anderson and his early '90s androgynous looks, and Suede (along with Manics, though they're coming from a slightly different realm) is one of those bands we've bonded over throughout our marriage. This particular album is also one of those we own in our vinyl collection, the others being Coming Up, the most recent Autofiction, and the 30th anniversary 2-LP edition of Dog Man Star. Some absolute killers here, including So Young, Animal Nitrate, The Drowners, and more. This is one of those seminal albums that defined the era. I'm going with a 5. Can't wait to revisit Dog Man Star when it's time. Looking forward to #day284.
Didn’t think it would be so enjoyable.
Personally, I love Suede, so I’m totally biased.
“Let’s chase the dragon, ahhhh” while Bernard Butler lays down one of the most earth shuddering riffs of all time. And then when the piano starts tinkling in during the big build up finish? Come the hell on, best song on any of these 1001 albums.
YESS!!
Well, well, if it isn't my favorite britpop band. It could be a 5/5 already simply because of Brett Anderson's voice. Their music makes me feel alive, And that's all I need to know. Couldn't care less about anything other than that. This one is a classic. Maybe just not as good as Coming Up, which is as far as by me, their greatest album.
Suede, not the London Suede, with a perfect band name and self titled for the British scene.
Bangin'
Totally loved it
Now this is how you do whining. Powerfully, gutturally, with real emotion. Please listen with an ear unblinded by the preconceived notion that this is "britpop".
I learned what Britpop is, because I looked up this album on Wikipedia. Apparently it’s a movement that emphasized Britishness and it’s bright, catchy alternative rock. Learned something new. As for the album itself, I loved it. This is the kind of band that I wished I discovered when I was a kid.
Hidden gem! Not groundbreaking but what they do they do well.
I'd put the first 3 Suede records up against any other band's first 3 any day of the week
I owe Suede an apology. The 1993 version of me was overwhelmed by so much good music, I dismissed Suede as not as good as too many others. I was wrong. This is a stunningly beautiful album and I glad I rediscovered it!
One of the finest debut albums of all time. When I first heard ‘The Drowners’ I thought this band were going places. A couple of months later I saw them live and was blown away by them, such swagger and glam, which seeped into their music. These elements also translated onto this album. There isn’t a bad track. It starts with the serene ‘So Young’, leading into the belting ‘Animal Nitrate’. The pattern across the album continues with varying tempos of the songs. Although there are no bad tracks, one of the highlights is ‘Pantomime Horse’ Anderson’s vocals convey emotions so well, and combined with Butler’s unique style of guitar playing (for the time), create such ‘Moving’ songs. Well it was always going to be a 5 star album, as I think it is better than Dog Man Star.
Good music and lyrics.
Really good kinda shoegazy vibe
#62 SHE CAN START TO WALK OUT IF SHE WANTS I got warm memories of the Suede show I saw over 1 year ago. I absolutely adore So Young, it's an amazing song. Love the cover. An absolute britpop classic in my eyes, and maybe even more important than some other contemporaries.
Goes so hard. One of the great debuts. Wipes the floor with the Blur/Oasis rivalry. Their follow up, Dog Man Star is also a belter.
I really liked this album, I had never heard of Suede before and they're very solid, seems like it would be a great live performance. 9/10
I started off pretty lukewarm about this album - as one is tempted to do after year 3 or listening to an album a day. When I got to track 6 "The Drowners" the album emerged from the background and really drew me in. "Sleeping Pills" right after that sealed the deal with its arresting style. I listened to the rest more attentively then started this over and really enjoyed this. Some nice 90's grunge with a healthy dose of glam rock and hints of new wave makes for a terrific combination! Other standout tracks for me: "Metal Mickey" and "Animal Lover."
Old fave.
Denna är riktigt bra. Väldigt speciell känsla med många fina gitarrslingor och en mycket unik röst. Coolt omslag. Dock så var låtarna ganska lika varandra genom hela skivan men eftersom att det var bra låtar så får det gå för den här gången.
Awesome
Really surprised and impressed by this album. The sound is right up my alley, every song was good, and some were great. I wish I had paid more attention to it, but the vibe was perfect. Standouts: So Young, Animal Nitrate, She’s Not Dead, Sleeping Pills, Breakdown, and Where the Pigs Don’t Fly.
great
Half of this rating is me atoning for my sins of giving Dog Man Star a 3/5 over two years ago, because it has now become one of my favorite albums of all time and my second most streamed album according to Last.fm. Suede stand out from the homogeneous blob of 90s Britpop by having a much darker, drugged-out sound, and a very distinct production that takes some getting used to. Brett Anderson's vocal delivery works with it very well, same with Bernard Butler's guitar playing (top 5 guitarists of all time by the way, y'all aren't ready for this conversation though). It sounds like smoking crack behind a strip club. It's unabashedly dirty and gay, and I'm a sucker for it. I love the fact that every time I look up the meaning of a Suede song, there's a 1 in 2 chance of the Genius.com explanation being "This is a song about gay anal sex". It's a 5/5. So is Dog Man Star. The official Britpop ranking is: Suede > Blur > Pulp > Oasis
pretty much just as awesome as the other album I’ve heard from them, Dog Man Star incredible composition and production, I really just adore the way that (The London) Suede sounds - 9/10
It was very good. Huge re-listening potential.
Great album well worth a listen
Fantastic Britpop entry.
From the band name and cover art I would have guessed this was from 73 and not 93. No idea what I'm in for here. Very impressed with the couple opening songs. I know exactly what group of kids would be listening to this from my high school 20 years ago, and it was those kids that turned me on to the likes of Placebo and Bowie during late night trips to IHOP. The more I listen to this the more annoyed I get that I didn't know about them earlier, but the fact that I've got 8 other albums from them to listen to makes up for it. For now, I owe this one another listen paying more attention to the lyrics as I was heavily distracted by the guitar (in a good way) the first go around. Favorite track: "Metal Mickey" 5/5
Very classic late nineties album. Like the late eighties, but without the flair. I like it :3
This record is a beautiful connector between my beloved post-punk and early Brit-pop and I am here for it. Exactly one time, 55 records into this project, has found me immediately purchasing an album. Several were close, but this was paid for within 20 minutes of pressing play.
Rating: ** 5 ** Notes: Never ever heard of this band before, but with the first note of the album immediately liked them. Have to relisten to some songs definitely. The whole album was truly a great experience. Songs which stood out in no particular order (credits to Uncle Gue for the idea): "So Young" "She's Not Dead" "Moving" "The Next Life" ------------------------------------------------------------- Rating Scale: 1- very bad 2- bad 3- neutral 4-good 5-very good additonaly -/+ sign if necessary
played the shit out of this CD in 1994. a much more partitioned, distinct indie sound compared to their contemporaries - the cool kids would say the b-sides were better than the albums though
cool
YAY! Probably 4/5 (9/10; 18 or 19/20), based solely off the three songs I have heard. Maybe 5 because it's better than the other 4s? 1993 Mercury Prize winner. Songs I had heard beforehand: 'Metal Mickey' (not to my taste but I understand why many like it), 'Where the Pigs Don't Fly' (excellent and I like the techniques), 'Animal Nitrate' (AMAZING and excellent pun in order to highlight social injustices). I LOVE the androgynous front cover. WHO was going to tell me these were public????????????????!!!!!!!!!!! Good start to the album with 'So Young' (heroin references!). Probably a 4. 4.5 if I could. All good styles but I don't think it's absolutely amazing. It did deserve the Mercury Prize though! 'She's Not Dead' is pretty good. The lead singer has a good voice. I like the cohesion in the songs. It reminds me of 'Parachutes': every song is similar but still fairly memorable and different. 5. 'Sleeping Pills' is very good! I now like 'Metal Mickey' -- an acquired taste of a song that must be listened to multiple times, it seems. I know Suede did not like the term 'Britpop' being applied to them but this is definitely a Britpop album. 'Animal Lover' is another highlight.
Brilliant debut record
Listened a week after seeing them live, and 30 years after its release. So colour me biased but yeah - 5 stars. Probably 4.5 as they've done better but still what a debut.
yess yes uhmhm about time i love suede i love suede really like this album although i prefere some of their other stuff
Loved it! One of the best albums I’ve listened to.
love it
Impressive. Great debut album that makes me interested in their other stuff.
En mä osaa tätä sen kummemmin perustella, on yksi elämäni levyistä. Brett on ihana. Ihana.
I was a teenager when Suede released this record, but I was in my late 20’s before I really got into them. Dunno what that says about me or about the band or about the 90’s. All I know is that they’re one of my favourite bands and this record is and All Timer™️.
A classic
loved this album
Love this
Fully signed up member of the Suede Nation here. The original and still one I listen to regularly. I glorious grimy shot of street passion, the power of doomed love and glamour... Above all else glamour.
This album is great in the music, even if a some of them sounds like the same, each one has something special, also the voice and the lyrics give the album that touch that no other can offer, this starts from the cover which could cause controversy, however as you listen the album, the purpose change is more clear, make you think about life as we live.
The follow-up, Dog Man Star, is several stars better but this album is great too of course. Coming Up ishpikd be on the list too. Suede is a really good example how good a band can be in their prime: the b-sides during Suede-DogManStar-Coming Up are of similar quality as the tracks on these three albums.
A brilliant album
This is how you do Britpop.
Delicious
Oh to be young, free and careless again, and to fully embrace the anxiety and confusion that comes with it. No album somes that time up better for than Suede.
Love it. It's got a post-punk vibe. Catchy, edgy, fast paced and not so cookie cutter, which is great!
Não conhecia nada e amei! Já quero ouvir mais! Melhores músicas: The Drowners, So Young, Sleeping Pills O álbum é todo bom!
This was so good! Shocked I haven't heard of it before. Totally reminded me of The Cure and The Smiths. Wow. Definitely want to listen to this one again.
Excellent album. Suede is ahead of it’s time, it still sounds modern. I really liked Animal Nitrate c and The Drowners. Will definitely be returning to this band.
I've Finished The Second Quarter M 3l Bouheli Mte3 Dostoevsky. No Productive Day. But Opportunity Is Knocking.
Me surpreendi totalmente. Fui com preconceito (achando que fosse meio boring tipo os mais famosos do britpop, Blur e Oasis) e achei muito foda. Primeira nota 5 que dou de um álbum que nunca escutei da lista.
Really fucking good
She's not dead...yet. I like Suede. That's as in depth as you're getting from me today.
Take glam Bowie and mix with Johnny Marr. Add sleaze and serve.
If the rest of britpop had more songs about poppers and ill-advised gay sex,I could maybe like britpop.
Day 315 One of those albums that was seemingly on at every house party I went to as a teenager but I don’t think I’ve sat and listened to it in 25 years, still holds up really well. Highlights The drowners Metal mickey Animal lover
It was great, I never knew this before, and I'll gladly listen to their other stuff. I'm terrible at making reviews.
Yeah okay it was good
Another Britpop album. None have really even been that similar. This one is a pioneer, though. It's really good. Would definitely come back to it
Nothing exactly jumped out at me but overall enjoyed the English alt vibes
Nice Brit-pop/post-punk/Glam album! Standouts: So Young, Animal Nitrate, The Drowners
I liked it. New British pop punk.
Suede looked to the glam scene of the past to create something original for their debut record. This album feels like it is building on what the Smiths put out. Bernard Butler's guitar playing is a lot more driving and sleazy than anything Johnny Marr ever did and works well against Brett Anderson's dramatic Morrissey impression. Anderson is a lot more likeable than Moz ever has been, even if he still feels like a total rockstar. "Animal Nitrate" is my most streamed song ever, so it hurts not being able to give this the full five rating as there is too much filler on here for me to hail this as a perfect album. The next two records that they put out are better than this, but this is still a very impressive debut.
5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background
Listed as “The London Suede”
Suede always has that unique voice and music. Liked it, got some really great standouts, just a proper 90s rock/britpop album. 1. Animal Nitrate 2. So Young 3. The Drowners
I’ve heard this before and I own it. It’s been years since I’ve listened to it all the way through, although maybe half of these songs are in mixes that we go through pretty regularly. There are a lot of good songs here but a lot of them tend to run together. However, none of them are bad. Good solid early 90s alt rock all around.
Not a ton to say except that I like it. I'm bad at articulating specifics about music I like. Metal Mickey probably my fave. Vocals are *so* accented in some parts that it almost feels like they're taking the piss, but I might be kind of impossible to please.
The first couple of tracks are a great start to the album. I really like the half way transition in Animal Nitrate. The fuzzy guitar tone on these tracks are what caught my ear immediately. I am not really a fan of the vocal performance on She's Not Dead. It's just not my thing. The instrumentals are great though. I really like the second half of the next two tracks Moving and Pantomime Horse. The instrumentals are what really stand out to me, especially the guitar. the vocal performance on both are quite good as well. The Drowners is probably my favourite track on the album. It's a very fun listen, the guitars and drums work so well together to create an upbeat and rock based feel. The guitar on Sleeping Pills is pure bliss. The breakdown on Breakdown is pretty cool :) hehehe ha. Metal Mickey is quite generic sounding but I kinda enjoy it. I think the vocals work best when it's in a slower song like The Next Life which heavily features the piano. I really like He's Dead.
First Listen: Really enjoyed the opening track. Singer had the same kind of Bowie/glam rockisms as The Auteurs, but far less annoyingly British. She's Not Dead's bass intro is so creamy. This song is gorgeous. Damn that bass. Moving wakes you right back up from SND. The tom drum breaks are a lot of fun. And then right back into dreamy. Hits a huge crescendo in the back half. I love the back and forth nature of the album up to this point. The Drowners is another fun rocker. Dude sounds like he's trying to do a bad English accent but it works somehow. I love how all the textures work together in Sleeping Pills. The epiano has a satisfying clickyness to it that helps it stand out from the guitars. Reminds me a lot of The Bends era Radiohead. Wish MJ heard this one. They do a good job of keeping you on the edge of your toes. The horn solo in Breakdown is nuts. Adding this to my horny endings playlist. Great track. Metal Mickey was kinda mid. Another upbeat track, but this one didn't feel nearly as upfront as the previous. Don't bring ur dogs around this band. Animal Lover is fun, though still not to the level of Moving or The Drowning. Saw people hating on this track, idk what they're on. Outro is sick. Not sure if a piano ballad was what I wanted. Cool chord progression. The ahhs are a bit grating. Apparently that's the last track, though Spotify played He's Dead Demo which was a cool track. OVERALL: Suede is really good at building a crescendo. The slower tracks start with beautiful floating textures, and end in huge swells. All of the tracks I enjoyed originally got better upon relisten. I think the last three tracks are unfortunately the weakest, but even then they're still enjoyable. I didn't catch too many of the lyrical themes, but as an album I'm likely to come back to, I'm excited to explore more. 8.5/10 T3: Moving, Sleeping Pills, The Drowners
Over here they’re called “The London Suede” due to a trademark dispute.
A low 4
Overlooked, original Britpop album. On my shelves. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ ★★★★☆ (7/10) Total reviewed : 322 Already owned : 74 Purchased : 15 To buy : 4 Nope : 229
I don't think I've ever intentionally listened to Suede before, only heard their big songs on the radio (mostly Animal Nitrate and The Drowners). But I had a vague idea of how they fit into Britpop and Cool Brittanica, and the whole "everyone's bisexual after midnight" thing. Glad I finally got around to listen to them. I feel like it would be easy to write them off as Bowie copycats, and the singer does often sound like he's doing a Ziggy Stardust impersonation, but there's enough originality and 90s haze about it that I can forgive them. There's a lot of catchy songs and clever lyrics, some great riffs too. I think I'll definitely come back to this, and their other albums too.
So Young is right - as soon as this started, I was 15 again. (Side note - I’m impressed by how many albums on this list I first heard when one of my friends at school taped it for me. Maybe we were cooler than I realised at the time.) I may be letting the nostalgia sway me, but I think this really holds up.
yes
I’m putting together a playlist of 90’s songs that I don’t know well, yet have a certain nostalgic feel. Definitely a few from this album going on there.
It's a good album with great singles. Maybe not worth all the hype the UK press gave it, but it was the start of a new movement in the UK music scene that would rule for the rest of the decade.
A confident debut filled with swagger and talent to back it up + it's one of the very first albums credited for kicking off Britpop. The crazy part is that they have even better albums in their discography!
I’d only heard the odd song by Suede, so was intrigued to hear this, and was pleased to find it a good listen. The album seems to alternate between livelier guitar-heavy songs and downtempo, slower songs. I preferred the former usually, with Animal Nitrate and Metal Mickey probably the best. It would be too harsh to say the slower tracks were bad, but they felt a bit less unique (maybe a bit downstream of The Smiths?). A nice addition to the Britpop canon, even if there might be better examples of the genre.
This is a strong 4 for me. The start of the album is excellent, especially the first four tracks. ‘Animal Nitrate’ might well be my favourite britpop song (though the band themselves hated the britpop label) ‘So Young’ and ‘Moving’ are also bangers and ‘She’s Not Dead’ has an ethereal beauty to it. The rest of the album, while still very good, didn’t grab me in quite the same way, which is why I’m giving this a 4 and not a 5.
This is a really strong early Britpop record. The whole album has a somewhat psychedelic, dreamy, ethereal atmosphere, but thankfully it isn’t overly reverb-heavy (one of my pet peeves when it comes to music production). It contains a good mix of upbeat, rockier numbers and slower, calmer tracks, which helps keep things interesting. ‘Animal Nitrate’ and ‘Metal Mickey’ are among my favourite tracks in the former category, ‘Pantomime Horse’ and ‘Sleeping Pills’ among those of the latter. I did find the vocals slightly grating at times, but not enough to mar my enjoyment of the album seriously. Solid 4 stars.
I thought this was a solid album.
Fabulous album. Glam - indie rock with style. Beautiful ballads and ballsy rockers.
Very cool
Straight back to College this took me. Great vocals
I don’t think I’ve ever fully appreciated just how good this album is, I certainly didn’t at the time it came out. However set against everything else that was out at the time, and to follow shortly afterwards, it’s a breath of fresh air. The sound alone is not like anything else that was being released at the time. Ok so there are a couple of tracks I would skip but the majority is very good.
Descubrimiento!
Good. Probably would be more excited if these were songs I’d heard before.
Initial reaction is that it sounded like an Oasis cover brand trying to do originals. Then I realized that it predates Oasis’ debut. I missed the whole BritPop thing and find it all mildly entertaining but not very exciting with the exception of the well known singles. The fact that it came out before Oasis and is at the start of the movement gives it an extra star for me.
Great record
I really liked it, the guitar playing and glammy brit pop aesthetic worked well. I am also more use to the singers unique vocals, since this is the second album I have heard from them. 4/5
I listened to this a lot in college and it was great to hear it again. I'm surprised I remembered basically every song after 15+ years. The mixing/production is kinda weird and doesn't really do the band any favors -- the guitars sound paper thin. Nevertheless, this is probably a top 3 all-time Britpop album.
Ainda assim, gostei dele. Ouviria novamente. Boa banda. 4/5
Very solid Brit Pop. Nothing blew me away, but I had a good time listening to this (I feel like I wrote this same exact review at least 10 times). Mid 4.
Ótimo album!
like Suede more, the more I listen to them
Wasn't super pumped when this one came up, considering I wasn't that huge on Dog Man Star. But I'm finding I like this one a bit more than Dog Man Star (Although, difficult to remember what that one sounded like considering I got it on the generator over a year ago). I vaguely remember it being a pretty calm album compared to this one (My memory is very shoddy in this instance - so I'm likely very wrong) and sounding very Bowie. This one sounds a little less Bowie and a little more like the other britpop bands of the time (Oasis and Blur) which is why I think I'm enjoying it a little more this time. But yeah, solid album. Probably not something I'll go back to, but I do enjoy it.
27/03/2026 I didn't know what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised. Spotify listeners: 728.7k
Really interesting album. I liked all of the songs. I felt like even though the songs didn’t have many in depth lyrics, the vocals were charming.
I really liked this, a great record. I've heard Dog Man Star before but never this so I'm glad it came up. Definitely the more interesting end of British album rock in the 90s.
I enjoy suede and their influence, although said influences can be overly present.
*||The London|| Suede* I had this at an 8.5 on the ||London|| Suede dive... I think I'm going to keep it there. I do like it's Bowie over Beatle influence Brit pop feel. I think that's what sets them apart from most of the Brit pop groups for me. The album really front heavy. After the first four songs I thought I was going to upgrade it, but as it kept going it kind of settled into that 8.5 especially the slower songs. The "Metal Mickey" is a banger though. (8.5) ★★★★
4.5
Good album and totally not related but an excellent band to watch live.
This sounds like something I would like, but I need to listen more. That’s a problem with this project. Sometimes it takes several listens for an album you had never heard to sink its teeth
I’d never heard these guys which is pretty weird but I love the Bowie vibe. I really liked sleeping pills and Breakdown. The sadder lyrics on the album, I guess. I look forward to spending more time looking through their catalog
Wasn't sure how this would have held up, but pretty impressed still. Definitely a cut above a lot of the bands of the time, and the songwriting is strong throughout. Early britpop maybe, but harking back to some interesting influences, and the sound of it is great to return to after all the years.
Det är ibland smärtsamt vacker popmusik. Men ibland är det bara bra eller t o m okay. Så det kan bara bli en stark fyra.
Another solid album from Suede. Every song had its own different sound and all were enjoyable. Enjoyed their different britpop sound, very good album.
Suede are fucking good aren’t they. This is no Dog Man Star but it is an excellent debut, and really cemented their unique style. 8 / 10 Best track/s: Animal Lover, So Young, Animal Nitrate
Giving classic Pulp (complimentary).
This is the second Suede (AKA The London Suede) album I've listened to on this list, ironically I listened to their second album first. I really like Dog Man Star, and gave it 5 stars. This was less immediate, but still enjoyable. Will revisit.
I've played this album through three or four times (never listened to it before, though of course I was aware of Suede). I think it's a bit of a grower, though maybe a bit more sonic diversity would be good.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Det här var min grej när jag var ung, fast jag lyssnade mer på albumen som kom några år senare. Så det slår an en sträng hos mig och det är kanske är nostalgi som talar när jag sätter en 4a. Bäst är So Young, Animal Nitrate, The next life och Gitarren på Sleeping Pills.
Suede in my mind were always trying to reclaim glam. There are obvious Marc Bolan references particularly on songs like Animal Nitrate, Metal Mickey and The Drowners. I realize that many pointed to Bowie as the influence but I think the T.Rex touch point is more nuanced particularly as it relates to the vocal stylings of Bretr Anderson. And yes, Bernard Butler’s guitar styling appears influenced by Johnny Marr. This is not a bad thing as Suede moves beyond their influences and updates their sound to be consistent with their contemporaries, notably Blur, to produce a compelling and wholly realized debut that is unmistakably English. This is one of the few records that truly is best experienced as a whole. Suede’s sound is immersive in the best possible way with each song designed to highlight Anderson’s vocals. If there is a flaw, and it is a minor nit - the middle of the record suffers from a couple of songs having the same sonic palate creating a bit of a pause rather than building to a strong finish. Sleeping Pills, Breakdown and Metal Mickey could have been broken up by Drowners after Sleeping Pills and switching Metal Mickey before Breakdown would have created some tension. Before being resolved with the run of sings beginning with Animal Lover. Still, a pretty amazing first record for any band and remarkably cohesive. 4/5
I had heard of them, but not sure I've actually heard any songs. It seems from the comments on here that a lot of people dislike britpop, lol. But to me not knowing much of it, I like it, nice alt rock sound to me.
This was great, I feel his voice is love or hate and I fall in the love side of the coin. The version of Brass in Pocket is the highlight. I didn’t listen to disc 2 as always. Say it on one disc or get out.
No es mi estilo pero creo que entiendo porqué la pegó en su momento. De todas formas, abusan mucho de la reverb y otro efectos falopa. Siento que no le agrega tanto al estilo musical.
Amazing. Iconic. Derivative. These are the words I would use to describe Suede's self-titled album, and I don't use any of those words lightly. Firstly, the album is fantastic. It's a fun album from top to bottom. Even the more serious and atmospheric songs were engaging in a way that most songs of that ilk aren't to me. I listened to it the whole day, both in bits and pieces and all together, and I never tired of it. The lyrics somehow avoid what I would expect from an album like this, in that while they are certainly self-aggrandizing it never becomes onanistic. There is a sense of honesty in the lyrics that a lot of Britpop (and music that's liked by a certain section of the male population that is both completely lads while trying to be somewhat intellectual) don't, and that goes a long way. Also the guitar rifts are absolutely fantastic. Second, this is the album that jump-started Britpop mania. While Suede's contemporaries (Pulp, Blur, and of course Oasis) all achieved far more cultural cache in the 30 years since the craze ended, Suede did start the whole thing with this album. The success of those other artist's albums were entirely due to them, of course, but Suede and did start the whole thing, and that's worth something. Now, with all that praise aside, the elephant in the room should probably be addressed. This album is incredibly derivative, to a degree I've never heard even amongst Britpop albums. It's Bowie does The Smiths, with rifts like a glam rock version of the Stone Roses. This album can only exist because of it's precursors, less in the "direct conversation" way that more unique pieces of music tend to be framed, and more in the "little brother becomes obsessed with the same bands that his older brother is so that he can seem cool" kind of way. And that brother really like The Cure. Suede's wears their inspiration on their sleeves, in giant neon letters, so if that's a problem this album is not for you. For me, though, I don't particularly care. But I understand if it is. If you're looking for originality, this album is not it. While, again, it is far less fallacious than a lot of other acts of it's ilk, this is still a self-serving album that only exists because of the shadow Morrissey left on the UK music industry. If you like that and don't mind unoriginality, then this album is fantastic. I will definitely be returning to this album again in the near future. Highlights for me are So Young, Animal Nitrate, Moving, and The Drowners.
Having had the absolute treat of seeing Suede live, I can never give an impartial review of this. Full of bangers and you can feel the energy
First time listening to the band, a strong album, good songs, great first impressions.
It hit harder when I was 17. Drowners is still a banger.
So good to head this again after these years
4/5 really really enjoyed this one!! need to listen a bit more to work out my favs.
Suede is a band that I know existed; if a crossword puzzle had a clue "UK 90s band" and Oasis didn't work, I'd try Suede next. But I only remember one or two of these songs. This maybe sounds like what would happen if the Smiths had listened to a little more David Bowie? It's slightly overwrought; the singer got on my nerves occasionally. But a lot of the music I like teeters on the edge of irritating like that. This is the sort of thing that I like when I'm in the mood for it; I thought it was a good listen. I'll revisit it some other time, since it seems like one of those records that benefit from listening to it a couple of times. So, 4/5
Overall, the music was solid, but the vocals were a bit rough around the edges. The album presents an intriguing mix of alternative, grunge, and glam rock. While it might seem average for its time period, I can see it being the kind of album that grows on you with repeated listens, revealing its depth and unique qualities.
This was great, nice to see one that actually deserves to be on this list
Kann man gut laufen lassen, britpop Galore
I had never heard of this. I wasn’t sure what to expect but this is pretty good. Much better than The Black Album.
Awesome pop. Tons of great tracks and interesting hooks and melodies.
really enjoyed, a lot more chill and lyrical songs than expected. Liked middle section of album the best - pantomime horse, sleeping pills, breakdown.
Decent album. I could listen to this again. 4/5
I like this. very pleasant listening experience. 4 stars
Very nice. Reminds me of mix between David Bowie and The Killers.
A classic from my party days, an interesting blend of glam, punk, and art rock, some similarities with 70’s Bowie, one of the best debuts albums of the 90’s
90’s Britpop ⭐️Mickey Metal
As a fan of the Smiths, I really liked the. Vibe of Suede. The beat and vibes of the music was energizing and I found myself really enjoying the album.
I do actually like Brit pop
Pretty good stuff, would throw on again
Fire af
8/10
4/5 Fav: Animal Nitrate, So Young, The Drowners, The Next Life Least Fav: Sleeping Pills
A good album, I liked She's Not Dead and Animal Lover the most.
Even this late into the list, I can't tell you I know too much about Britpop. Sure, of course I'm very familiar with the biggest names (Oasis, blur), and as of now I can at least name some of the other acts (Pulp, Manic Street Preachers). But I still don't know how well I can really judge any random Britpop album that gets thrown my way. Y'know, what makes any album in particular special besides the fact that it comes from a different name (This is, by the way, excluding the groups aforementioned.) So an album like this gets tossed my way, by Suede — or The London Suede, I guess — I can't even begin to imagine what I'm supposed to think about it. Certainly I wouldn't have ever guessed that this is often cited as one of the first Britpop albums. Yeeeaaaahhh, I kinda wish I'd known that going in. Like, jeez, one of the first Britpop albums? Maybe even **the** first! That's notable! That's worthwhile! That's worth consideration! And I ended up jus' kinda having this album on while I played more 'Wario World' (and in world 3 no less! That ain't a good spot for concentrating on **anything else**). I should say, I **did** listen with headphones, so it wasn't like I was entirely zoning out on it ... but, yeah, I kinda didn't give this thing the attention it could have gotten. Whoops. But, whatever. I made my bed and now I hafta live with it. Without that piece of knowledge, how did I end up taming (The London) Suede's first album? Well, to begin with, I see where the Bowie comparison comes from. This guy is trying his damnedest to sound like a young, slightly pitched David Bowie. And I don't think he did too badly?I think I would've preferred him to sound more like himself than Bowie, but I suppose he could've been worse. (I've also heard that this group sounds a lot like The Smiths, too, although it's been a while since I've heard 'em myself, so I wouldn't be able to say if that's true or not. If it is, well, I guess you've got one better option to listen to if you just can't **stand** Morrissey.) Given the way I was listening to this thing I wasn't able to take in too much of the lyrics, naturally. But the music? Oh, the music. It doesn't go as big as I like my Britpop to go (they ain't no Oasis!), but there are spots where it nearly gets there, and goodness me. And in general, these are just ... neat lil' tunes, y'know? Maybe even great, even. Like, I'unno, the whole soundscape these songs got, they really appealed to me. And even on the more downer tracks, they still have a hook in there where I hear 'em and I'm like, "Dang, that's a good little thing you did there." I'unno. That's about all of the words I can pull out about this album; I really did try. I mean, without being to frame this album as "one of the first Britpop records," it's good, and I enjoyed it a lot, but it never hit that intangible "wow" factor with me. It just never went over the cliff into "DAMN, THAT'S SOME GOOD SHIT RIGHT THERE," y'know? Not really being able to separate it too much from a lot of the other Britpop albums my group's gotten ... yeah. But still, I'd give it a thumbs up and good recommendation. Heck, I might even give it a second listen to find out what I missed my first go around. Like, I'm sorry I wasn't able to give you your due, Suede. Too, this probably isn't the best review I've ever given. But I guess I can only hope I give 'Dog Man Star' more of my attention and, as a result, a better review. Until then, then, though ... I'unno. Ooga-chaka? Yeah, this is a mess, goodness...
One of my favorite discoveries on this list has been Suede. Both albums are full of really strong tracks that hold my interest through the entire album. Even the “you’re a water sign, I’m an air sign” bit from “Sleeping Pills,” which I thought was corny at first, completely stuck in my head and now I love the song. I waffled between a 3 and a 4 for Dog Man Star, and I’m feeling similarly here, but I think the tracks on this album are stronger so I’m rounding up.
I’ve listened to the three other “big four” Britpop bands but never Suede. It’s sort of like finding a new room in the house you’ve been living in for 30 years. I really enjoy everything about this except the lead vocals. I have no idea what he’s saying- but when I can hear him his delivery is kind of parodically British. I dig it. FOUR STARS
Good album
501/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
I love the instrumental and guitar/drums. The lyric “don’t kill yourself because your bike won’t fly” really sticks out to me. My favorite song is sleeping pills and I also like metal Mickey, pantomime horse, and painted people. I am not sure if I will ever relisten to these songs but it was a great album!
I rlly liked this
Trashy britpop with a glam edge - love it, especially animal nitrate
The beginning of britpop takeover. Oh lord. But this album is actually really fuckin good. Tough to say if it's a 5 star good like "Dog Man Star", or if it's a really high 4 star album. Some elating choruses and killer guitar work, but also a couple forgettable songs. I'm thinking high 4 here
I actually liked this a lot. I thought it was pretty unique, even with the Britpop. I haven't listened to Blur too much, but I certainly prefer this over Oasis. Also, the vocals and some of the instrumentation gave me David Bowie vibes, which is a huge plus.
4/5
Listening notes: I thought this was going to be crap but I'm really liking it. Sound is amazing. Hard guitars in the Animal Nitrate song sounds a bit metal. Expected this to be way more poppier but sounds like rock. Vocals sounds like Bowie which is fantastic. People say they sound like the Smiths, but I found Suede to be more rock, at least for the 2 first songs. Actually the second one sounded like a Bon Jovi song in structure, and I know that all the Suede fans will laugh at me but you can fuck yourselves.
This one needs more listens, but it definitely caught my attention. Odd that I missed this album, but I think it dropped when I was in after high school music limbo for new music. Right now it's 3.5 for me but bumping.
Before this album I was under the impression that a) Suede aren't really britpop, just around at the time and b) I didn't really like them. This album was great. A lot of the guitar parts could have been written by Coxon. It's a bit more whimsical than Blur but that works well with the slightly heavier songs than id heard from Suede. It seems to me they took the slight edge out of the songs I know until the whimsy was too thick. First few songs probably stuck with me the most, though there was a lighter song halfway through I really enjoyed, but pumpkinsy. Not sure I'm a full convert yet but this has definitely changed my opinion and I'll give them more time now.
Opening couple of tracks are great. The start of "she's not dead" sounds like a smashing pumpkins song..... I said it last time, but I think suede were one of the better Brit pop groups and I really enjoyed this. Think more than the last one. Highlights: So young Animal nitrate Moving The drowners 4.5 and I'll be back
7/10 Top track: So Young / Moving Luna Sea-esque vocals mixed with Morrissey and Bowie.
Some days Brett Anderson sounds like a plaintive soul, other days a mewling cat.
suede
Another British record featuring whiny white guys. Of course I enjoyed it. 4/5
Good rockin stuff. Clean production
Surprised I hadn't heard before. Nirvana feel with a more classic vibe
Love this record. Energy is there and some very unique sounds. It just works.
I know a lot of it but not everything. Most of it is great, some of it is ok. They have a such a distinctive style though. Crunchy but catchy. Saw them for the first time a year or two ago with the Manics and Brett Anderson just steals the show still.
Louche: smooth but a bit sordid. I enjoyed it.
'So Young' is superb statement with which to open, the jazz break is particularly of the Aladdin Sane/Ziggy-era. It's followed by another classic 'Animal Nitrate', one of the all time Britpop bangers. Butler's guitar work is fantastic throughout. I also like the quite, jazz in the city type moments. It's an album that manages to escape the confines of the Britpop era it birthed. It opened the gate for a thousand guitar bands that coalesced behind it. And importantly it still hangs together as a cohesive album.
Another Puerto Rico listen. I really enjoyed this. So Young, not sold off the bat but that piano part was intriguing. Animal Nigrate - solid She’s not dead - solid acoustic Moving - the swirly parts are nice The Drowners - great opening riff, great tune Sleeping pills - pumpkins / queen Next life - another quiet gem Where the pigs don’t fly - nice what-you-might-expect-but-still-good album ender
I somehow didn’t know this album, and it’s hard to understand why. This should’ve been up my alley in 1993. I really appreciate the sound, after all. Smart songs, too. I don’t quite connect with the vocals. If I did, this would be a solid four-star offering. As it is, this is probably closer to 3.5 stars.
Had not previously been familiar with this work
Mjög gott Britpop og ég er bæði hrifinn þá og nú, en ég veit ekki hvort ég togi hana alla leið í fimmu, þótt þarna séu vissulega fimmulög.
I had this on in the background and enjoyed what I heard. I would give it 3.5 if possible, but 4 is okay.
Animal Nitrate, Moving, The Drowners, & Metal Mickey are my favorites. I like their sound & at times the vocals remind me of Siouxsie.
That album cover is genius. Is it two boys kissing? Two girls? A boy and a girl? Complete androgyny. It sums up their dramatic glam sound so perfectly. Suede sounds like Pulp with a different lead singer. They seem very inspired by David Bowie. Do I love this? Not immediately, but I could see it growing on me.
I love me some British glam rock. This didn’t hit me quite like Pulp but still super fun.
3.5
I do like.
Very cool album. This sounds a lot like it the new Cure tried to sound like the old Cure. Kinda poppy but still has that moody ethereal feel to it. I wouldn’t say it’s ground breaking for what was coming out of the time but it’s music that I really like.
British music summed up into one album pretty much 8.1
Cool stuff
Great sounds. It’s got this melancholy Bowie glam to it. Super solid for 90s British rock vibes. Would listen again
They have a nice London accent for like 80% of their songs. It is a really nice blend of rock and like a smoother genre. The whole album is actually really good I quite recommend although Al is probably never gonna give it a listen…
Cool
Good
An excellent debut album.
I like this album more than I should. Normally I don’t like lead vocal being too nasal or too dramatic. He used lots of cries and falsettos which I normally don’t like. But somehow I could feel how much they must have loved their own music. His presentation suits their style quite well. I do like the next life. When you start talking about the next life, it suggests you may well like your current life, and you want to experience it again. It’s an enjoyable moment for me.
Suede’s self-titled debut is a bold, swaggering introduction to the band’s glam-tinged Britpop sound. With Brett Anderson’s dramatic vocals and Bernard Butler’s soaring guitar work, the album is equal parts gritty and romantic, capturing a raw energy that feels both decadent and melancholy. Tracks like Animal Nitrate and So Young define its sleazy glamour, while slower moments reveal depth beneath the gloss. It’s not flawless, but its ambition and attitude make it a landmark debut.
another great find here
Along with Pulp, easily the best of the Britpop-pack well away from the Blur vs Oasis nonsense. Soaring vocals, sharp suits and pointy shoes, this album feels as fresh as it did to my young ears on release.
Ein starkes Debütalbum mit charismatischem Gesang und atmosphärischem Britpop-Sound. Einige Songs stechen besonders hervor, andere wirken etwas blass – insgesamt aber ein stilprägender Klassiker mit viel Seele.
Not quite as good as the follow-up, but for a debut, this is pretty spectacular
i liked it, but there were absolutely no novelty for me. a combination of early 90’s indie scene sounds. the album cover is great tho
Britpop was a thing, at least for us Brits. And this was as cool and important an album in that period as any.
Bi 'The Next Life' emotional umeblöked das de Nedi sich gfrögt het öb ich jetzt wükli es Geisli seg. 4 Zunge id Luftröhre

WERE SO BACK ITS UNREAL. probably one of my favorite albums in Britpop. we are so back its unreal....... not an all-time favorite but was very nice to revisit it! unfortunately I;m not the biggest fan of animal nitrate. I think the only personal con for this album is that I'm not a fan of Brett's vocals on some songs (which is weird despite liking voices similar to his...?) Stuck between a 3.5-4/5 for me. Favorites: She's not dead, Pantomime horse, Moving, The Drowners
Great album, love the vocals in particular
Suede could be the best debut album by a rock band in the '90s, (Definitely Maybe and the Blue album are its only rivals imo), yet it's not quite got the consistency of the very best albums of the decade. The bands core dynamic is the relationship between Brett and Bernard, it couldn't last forever but once one of them leaves, it's really all over for me.
This is my first time with this one. I am not a big fan of Britpop, so I wasn't expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised by this record. I found it enjoyable and will listen to it again.
Love Moving. The album in general also great, though not the 5/5 great
Can't seem to place this band anywhere. So many influences, from post-punk to mainstreem pop. This is a great album, the guitar work is incredible, though its simplistic. Songs are catchy and memorable. The only problem I have with it are the vocals. I get that it's a stylistic thing, but they get a little tiring, because they're not that good. 4/5
This was much, much better than I was expecting
Yeah good shit. Simpsons: No
Another one I liked.
I’m a sucker for BritPop and this is right up my alley.
very good vibes!
One of the very few britpop bands I've never actually listened to before. And it really is just a solid album, nothing mind blowing, but definitely one that I want to get to know better as it's clearly quality stuff.
More Britpop! I can't even be mad, I love it. Got this one for today's album and I became compelled to do a bit of looking into what Britpop actually is, and I find it helps a lot to know that it was made as a response to grunge, a genre which I hold very dear to my heart. Listening to this record with that context in mind made me appreciate it more overall, and contrast it with bands of that scene. I think I liked this record more than This is Hardcore overall. A real treat to listen to! I dig the pacing, the vocals, the instrumentals... yeah it's just quite good. Some sick, larger-than-life moments perfectly mixed in with lower and slower moments. Honestly I was reminded of The Smashing Pumpkins several times throughout this... made me want to listen to Siamese Dream. Will definitely be revisiting this one!
The guitar work is mwah chefs kiss on the mouth
Leather is better.
Cool!
this is a very underrated britpop record, i think it’s one of the best ever, the quality is undeniable, the vocals are amazing and really ethereal instruments, very good
Not really listened to them before but this was decent
A mix of big brash joyful rockers with fizzy guitars and a power pop harmonies and oceanic feeling blissful spacey tracks with a floaty sprawling feel. Though they have lots of overlaps with the other big britpop bands - blur's whimsy, the verve's chill psychedelia, pulp's drama, Oasis's catchy hooks - they're carving out their own shoegaze but upbeat glam rock lane. Somehow I missed this the first time around (they really never made it to the US radio) but this is a consistently strong but nicely varied, and great sounding album.
shockingly raw and glamorous for britpop, which is like the least raw and glamorous genre out there lmao
Kinda mad at myself for not being even a little familiar with this band prior to listening. But I am glad they were on the list.
Was unfamiliar, but enticing enough to visit again in the future.
3.5
I’d never heard of Suede before I started this project, but I really loved Dog Man Star when I reviewed it. I know Bernard Butler left Suede before recording was completed on that second record, so I’m really curious to see what his presence will do for a full album recording. I’m hoping that I’ll enjoy Suede’s debut as much as I enjoyed their sophomore album! I really enjoyed this album, but it’s a little short of five stars for me. The guitar playing and songwriting were outstanding, and I loved how the production gave this album a unique sound and atmosphere that was also present on Dog Man Star. Not only was the guitar playing great, but no song sounded alike, and the album was still very cohesive in its sound and mood. The first half of the album was a bit stronger in my opinion, and I really loved “So Young,” “Animal Nitrate,” “Pantomime Horse,” and “Sleeping Pills.” Just like on Dog Man Star, the first song was really strong, and managed to completely hook me in to the album. My biggest complaint against this album is that some of the songs felt like they dragged on for too long, ending in what felt like a minute of unnecessarily drawn-out vocal refrains. Even though the guitar playing and production were great, the album’s sound did feel a little one-dimensional by the end of it. However, I think some of that was due to the fact that I was constantly comparing this album to Dog Man Star, which felt like it didn’t depend on the guitar playing as much. I wasn’t wild about the vocals on this album either, and I can’t quite pinpoint why. Still, this was a really good album, but I definitely enjoyed its follow up more.
Very nice
3.5
smashing pumpkin vibes, good to work to
Digger det. Kanke tro jeg nesten skippa det.
Like Arctic Monkeys and British post-punk revival, only bands like Oasis and Blur are remembered in the public's consciousness today. This was apparently the album that started it all.
Some really great songs on this album. Will definitely listen again. Animal Nitrate was the only one I recognised but Sleeping Pills, So Young and the Next Life were all very strong. Excellent guitar work. A really impressive debut
Really incredible work, clearly inspired some of the best British new-wave bands as well
