2.5 rounded up. Didn't think much of that.
Seedy
3 out of 5. Just ok brit-pop with decent energy to it.
It was not bad
Started off really disliking the first few songs but it won me over by the end.
Favorite Track: She's Not Dead
Pretty standard British rock/pop. Not bad but nothing really stands out either. Likes: So Young; Animal Nitrate; Moving
Other than the odd song I’ve not been much of a Suede listener. Brett Anderson is one of the iconic voices of Brit pop, and the guitars mix synth with psychedelic, pop and punk. Their lyrics are fun and the Melodie’s are incredibly catchy. I enjoyed their self titled album, some tracks stand out like So Young and Animal Nitrate, but I think the other songs are ones that would grow on me as time goes by. Although I can’t exactly give it the title of masterpiece, it’s definitely an album and band I’ll return to.
Dormir et se reveiller au milieu de la nuit avec une musique dans la tête
Enjoyable album overall and some very catchy songs on here. I don't think I could listen to them often as the singers voice could easily get on your nerves
"We are so sad, quirky, and british, so I guess we have to make a mediocre studio album about it"
So much forgettable britpop on this list man
Meh
Mejor que el otro de Suede que está en la lista, con un par de bangers al principio pero un poco cansador ya para el final 7/10
Like the Cure, but just not as good. Doesn't give me the same hit of sadness and despair.
Écouté distraitement mais pas désagréable
pleasant enough listen but I also love thesmithsthecureoasisduranduranetc so what does that really do about this album that came after all of them? animal lover was a good track though. also welcome to soapbox corner: if you’re going to have two songs on your album with the same word in the title (“animal” in this case) they HAVE to be two halves of a whole or speak to each other in some way. otherwise pick a different word!!! write about something else!!!
Album deffiebtky grew on me as it went. 3.5🌟
Not bad
Some decent melodies but overall it’s standard issue early 90s British Alt
- i like the sound - favorites: the drowners, animal nitrate, pantomime horse - rating: 3/5
Didn’t think I’d like it at first, but it started to grow on me. A bit too much going on in most songs for me, but still had some catchy tracks.
Some good tracks on here and almost all are ruined by his screeching vocals 🤢 Animal Nitrate is a good song and I prefer the version playing in my head with me singing it - and I definitely can’t sing. Much better than the previous album of theirs, so a reluctant and generous 3⭐️
Enjoyable instrumentally. Notable tracks were Animal Lover and The Drowners.
Mehhhhhhh
Interesting.
Dressed up as a little more but at its core it’s kind of a throwback power pop album with some emo influence. Like if Morrissey was the lead singer of the Knack. The simpler songs were better, lost me when it tried to go too big.
2.9 Didnt really care for the vocals, but the rest of it kept me interested enough
I thought this night rise to a 4, but it never got there. It's fine, nothing bad but nothing exciting either.
buen album interesantisimo
fav song: so young theatrical, melodramatic, performative 50/100
I'm laughing 'Pantomime Horse' is so bad Actually half these songs are Like 'Sleeping Pills' what the fuck is that
More British glam rock?!? It was fine, but how many British albums from the 90s do we need?
Liked Animal Nitrate, could take or leave the rest of the album, there's a reason why Suede aren't remembered as much as the other Britpop giants
los stone roses se deslizan a blur
Not too bad, some solid songs on there and a few grew on the the second or third time around. 3.5 rounded down.
The London Suede?
Just started but so far this seems very Roxy Music. It's fun. Not particularly moving, but fun.
It was fine. Not as good as I actually hoped, based on the fact I really like several of their later songs. Won't be hurrying to listen again.
Definitely inspired by Bowie. Very Bowie-esque. Can also hear the sounds of what would become Brit Pop in here as well.
Its good but i didnt think it had smth different to diferentiate them from other bands.
It was fine. There were a few nice songs but won't revisit the album.
Suede don't do much to raise a heart rate. Thought the album was picking up at the end before realising Spotify was now doing suggestions
It was good but would I listen to them again probably not right now maybe later in my life.
Álbum muy tranquilo, salvo un tema movido, llega a rozar lo psicodélico, muy experimental, raro, pero no significa que sea malo
Like a last gasp of New Wave
I've never liked Suede. Musically they're pretty good, but Brett's vocals grate on me. I always preferred Cast, The Verve, The Seahorses, Blur, Pulp etc... I thought that maybe after more than 30 years later I've appreciate them more, but I still feel the same.
Never really been a big Suede fan or too familiar with much of their work, although recognise this album cover. Kind of what I expected and doesn’t particularly hit the spot for me. Very 90s, very average. (3.5)
Oh good, another Britpop album taking up space on this list.
Passively alright. So middle of the road...3/5
Pretty decent background music but did not wow me on first listen.
Brit pop that has a few moments. It’s actually the ballads that carry this album and have the most depth. Lead vocalist can be a little irritating ala Liam Gallagher from from Oasis.
3.5
3.5
Britpop is not my favourite genre, and this is not my favourite britpop. 3 stars
I know this is a beloved band in the U.K., they just don't do a lot for me. Sounds like a Bowie clone fronting Pablo Honey-era Radiohead. 3 stars.
A sho nuff certifiable stone cold early Britpop classic with a slew of proper suave singles, at least from guitarish standpoint. Main problem is Brett Anderson is pretty yelpy and annoying as frontman and is like a poor toothless Saturday morning cartoon version of Bowie. More gammy than glammy. There are also some proper snoozers like Pantomime Horse so I’ve no problem giving this a 3. Wooo go Team Blur! The worst thing the Manics ever did (besides their newest album Critical Thinking) is probably tour with Suede in 1994 and co-headline with them again in 2024. I would have respected them more if they co-headlined instead with a puppet show.
bedroom pop for men
Better than I expected. Pretty noisy form of Britpop. I don’t know if I will really listen to it again but I enjoyed my time enough. I didn’t really enjoy the quiet parts here, they felt like they dragged on a bit long and couldn’t really keep me interested. The loud parts and songs were almost shoegaze like and were quite a bit better, really liked those. Lands somewhere in the middle.
Meh... Just an absolute meh... Nothing memorable on this one...
Okay
Was a fine album, not my thing but still enjoyable, very glam pop
Hadn’t heard any of these before. Enjoyed the guitar, especially toward the beginning of the album. Heard some Bowie and Beatles influences.
Spiritually lesbian, musically underwhelming
Being their debut album it sounds pretty well, they sound like a project with fresh music, good rhythm and good lyrics. Seem to have some David Bowie influence as well as some Duran Duran influence too.
I liked it a lot but not sure when or if u would listen on my own
This one is not for me. it has that pre-Oasis/post-Echo and the Bunnymen vibe but way way way too emo to get all the way through. 3 stars because it has moments of dreaminess but can't give it four without gagging a little.
fine.
Overall, I really like the sound of the record. I could not help but hear the influence of Bowie all throughout the album. I think the guitar work is fantastic all over these songs and was really the component within the sound I found myself mostly drawn to. I this is a good record but it feels a little too tied down to the fact that it’s relying on such obvious influences and no song quite hits the same highs for me as the opener does.
It's very 90s Brit pop!
Second Suede album of this list for me so far, which isn't great. I think they're a fine band, but do they merit 2(+?) albums on the list? I'm not so sure. I want to hate this album so much. I want to say that I'm tire of Britpop and am ready to rate every Britpop album a 1. But for some reason, I can't do that with this album. It's somehow not terrible, and even endearing at times! My biggest gripes is the squeaky voice part at the beginning of nearly every word, and the overly repetitious chorus on several songs (Animal Lover, for one). I didn't hate it, but I also probably won't go back to it any time soon.
I had this the day before with my other group I'm doing the list with. It's well done but pretty mundane.
It's okay. There's better britpop out there.
Rustgevend
This was fine. It has interesting parts but is mostly kind of boring Britpop. 2.5/5.0: Mixed
well done but kinda boring
good
I gave this one a few listens and it didn’t click with me as well as Dog Man Star did. It’s no doubt a solid debut and is a classic for lots of folks, but most of them are British.
The voice is pleasant, but singing style is a bit over the top.
Pretty good.
Better than Coldplay
Oh man, I remember the fuss when this came out. It has not worn well. Very much of its time. Loved it then, kind of bored and mildly irritated now. Also every time I hear them it unlocks the memory that my sister’s pal fancied Brett because he thought the singer was a woman…
again that one particular english 60s/70s sound
i liked animal nitrate the best
I weirdly like it
Teksty całkiem fajnie sie zaczyły, ale potem szybko powtarzalne, ale muzyka spoko
One good song, the others ok
It’s fine. But how many records with this sound do we need on the list? Sits pretty comfortably into the whiny British alternative sound without pushing too many boundaries. Has some high moments, but wasn’t particularly inspiring. Overall, I didn’t hate it, didn’t love. Thought it was well produced, but pretty derivative and safe. 3/5.
A brash debut from a Britpop band that rocked harder than Blur and sounded like they were having more fun than Oasis. The guitar tones on this are strong and crisp, providing a glammy feel that sometimes hints at psychedelia. When those guitars swirl around, like on the shoegaze-adjacent "Pantomime Horses," the album is at its strongest. But on the louder songs, the guitars lack memorable riffs. For as much power as there is behind this and as transgressive as the lyrics are, the songwriting can't really keep up, creating a set of songs that are at the same time exciting and a bit anonymous. Fun enough, but similar sounds were done better by both contemporary bands and bands this was influenced by.
Vissa riktiga guldkorn!
Best Song: Pantomime Horse. I quite liked the boisterous (nearly shouted) chorus with the guitars in the background. A really solid crescendo track. Worst Song: The Next Life. What a dull, typical piano ballad. Overall: At times I thought it was a bit boring, but on some tracks they really kept amplifying the stakes, bringing things to these big, classic rock-style crescendos. Sure, other times it is far too glam for me, but overall it was better than I expected.
I liked this better than their album Dog Man Star that showed up like 150 albums ago (I gave it a 2/5), but the main issue with this band still persists: their lead singer sucks ass. There’s some really nice arrangements on here, and the band itself is pretty good (if you enjoy alternative Britpop), but the bizarre vocal stylings of the lead singer sucks a lot of the enjoyment out of it for me. He’s dead-set on doing that combo Bowie/Morrissey impression and it detracts from otherwise good music. 3/5 is the best I can do.
This album grew on me as time went on. I didn’t really have any favorite songs, but I like the way their voice sounds. If they had other albums, I might check them out. But this appears to be a one and done. Rating: 3/5
I was never keen on Suede. I didn't care for Brett's melodramatic vocals and they were usually a bit too glam for me. That was mainly based on the singles, which tended to show their Mott the Hoople side. This album is more varied than I expected and pretty consistent in quality, with some quieter songs I enjoyed
This wasn’t too bad actually. Experimental and polished, didn’t think it was anything exceptional though
Suede is OK. They are part of my go to genre for all my early life with their new wave sort of sound and vibe. I think they are maybe somewhere in the pack of bands from the era. I was hoping they would stand out a bit more maybe. I may even be being tough on them for not somehow meeting my own expectations. This is one pitfall to rating albums I suppose. They may even be exceptional and I am just missing it. My brain says YEAH... uh... well, ... yeah as songs slip into "sure it is OK" from "oh, maybe this one?" But this is being over-dramatic! They are fun and a bit dated but are good overall. I would almost say they deserve a bit more than I am going to give.
Not bad, a couple of familiar tunes, some tunes a bit slow & some a bit out there, but listenable
I mean it’s… fine. The lead singer’s voice is kinda whiney. On the slower songs it feels draggy, as if it was a chore for these guys to stay standing up to play their instruments. Wavering whether to give this 2 or 3 stars. Certainly won’t have any inclination to come back to it.
I had no idea who Suede were. By looking at their album cover, I thought they might be an R&B band from the late 70s that made an album or two. I was way off. Suede is an alt-rock, maybe more Brit rock, band from England, and this album is from 1993, their debut, actually. Not sure how I didn’t know of this band, other than at that time I was really only listening to classic rock and metal at that time. I really dig this album. They play solid rock and roll, and you’d be surprised at how hard that seems to be, especially these days. Rock is dead, my friends. Though some may say music is dead…at least music by actual humans who write and play instruments. I digress. F’n A right, this band can play. Moving, track 4, is a great rock song with a rousing guitar solo. Track 5, Pantomime Horse, is just heavy and, wow. I was not expecting to be blown away today. Why isn't this band huge? Sleeping Pills, track 7, is a big Radiohead-esque arena ballad, and it could have been a big single for the band. I guess the record company didn’t think so. It’s got a big chorus that people could sing along to. The last minute rises up on guitar swells before dropping back down to earth for a landing. Love, love, love this song. Maybe Suede was looked at as a Radiohead clone and that killed any big steam they had behind them. Though Radiohead would go on to do tons of experimentation, I think Suede was probably just a rock band through and through. Now, it must be pointed out that the album sold a ton in the United Kingdom and as far as Wikipedia knows, the band is still together and recording music. So, I’m the idiot thinking that because I’d never heard of them that means they weren’t successful. They were, and are to this day, and there are a ton of bands I have heard of who have been out to pasture for decades. Track 9 is Metal Mickey and I loved it from the first few bars. Very bluesy, very reminiscent to me of an underrated band called Junkyard, though the chorus is more Beatles-like. Hell, this song made it to number 7 on the Billboard modern rock chart in 1993. Maybe I was just out of the modern rock scene completely. I’m grateful to have been given this album today because I loved it. The album got generally good reviews with some comparing the band to The Smiths, which I can see. The band sounds like a 90s band, but that doesn’t mean it's bad. I think this is a must listen, if for no other reason than it’s a great rock record. I’m going to check out more of their catalog. If you like Radiohead circa Pablo Honey or The Smiths, I think you’d definitely dig this album. Is it a must-hear? I’m not sure about that, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and will add it to my newly found file.
This was quite good but I never really got on with Suede because of the vocals, and I don’t think today changed my mind. Musically speaking, this was pretty good.
I don’t think any stood out to me
Listened earlier! Good album. 3/5
Pretty good but I wouldn’t consider it among my favorite albums
Accidentally spun the remastered deluxe which ran for over 3 hours. I suppose it dragged on a touch. the actual album was nice. Apparently these guys were the first of the britpop era. Cool to hear where it all stems from. It was fine. 6.5/10 for me.
I didn’t hate it! Wouldn’t re listen. Kinda dragged on after a bit
Alternative and successful Brit-Pop.
Good britpop and glam rock. Would have listened to this one earlier but only got around to it with this. Very dreamy and beautiful sounds, great 90s era British vocals. Not gonna give it a four though because all of these bands sound the same.
I see this is sitting at 3, which is exactly where this middle-of-the-road, as-meh-as-it-gets album deserves to be.
It's fine. Maybe if I heard this when it was released I'd been able to feel more about it, but listening for the first time in 2026, it sounds dated, old and tired.
A bit duller than I remember it. Animal Nitrate is the highlight track.
Slightly catchier than the last one we did, but I still find it a bit whiney.... ironic, as I often get called that myself. Something about the band doesn't sit right with me. Well, something about their sound. 3 stars.
I keep, thinking I will like these guys and yet here we are. 1993 saw Nirvana's In Utero and Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream. Then there is this. These guys discovered a Zoom 9000 multi effects pedal, thought it was the greatest thing every, cranked every effect to 11 and ran with it. The recording quality is constantly all over the place. Some point the drums are clear, and then next thing it sounds like they are playing in a room down the hall. There's good moments and clear good musicianship, but it doesnt gel. And the singing style is not for me. They did write animal nitrate though, and Basement do a half decent cover of that song, so ill give em a bonus star for that.
The first couple songs are kinda catchy, if not particularly interesting, but it quickly fizzles out and the rest of the album could hardly be more generic. How are people seeing Bowie, The Cure, The Smiths etc. in these bland songs? It’s not that it’s bad, it’s perfectly well-made, it’s just got nothing going for it in terms of being original or memorable. 2.5/5
I think I would have loved this so much more if I had listened to it sooner
I can't make up my mind on this one. I think it's good, but maybe not?
I liked this - I thought it was an enjoyable background listen. Nothing really stood out to me but it was still an all round good album.
Kind of annoying in the beginning, but it grew on me. Still think there’s far too much mediocre Britrock on this list.
This album started off so strong. The first few tracks are bangers, and then the slow tunes come in…. Now I’m not saying that slow songs are bad, or a band can’t have songs with a different vibe, but it has to work. And it just doesn’t really work here. It’s too much a mix of highs and lows. You go from songs like “Sleeping Pills” to “Metal Mickey” and it’s just to much of a juxtaposition. This is a band that excels at the upbeat and uptempo. The guitar melodies are great, the singing and lyrics are good, it would be a great album if not for the few turds sprinkled in there. This is an album that could easily be three tracks shorter and be just right.
Britpop/rock isn't typically my bag and this is not much different although there are some highlights: I dig the drumming on Moving Pantomime Horse is a sweeping, lush, yearning song Metal Mickey is straight-up catchy
This had a few songs I liked. Never listened to it before but after reading up I might try their next album.
I listened to this when I was Christmas shopping i.e. distracted. Sounded like inoffensive 90s alt-rock
Very typical Brit-Pop-Rock, very Smiths-like, though I'm not sure which came first. Maybe The Smiths are very Suede-like.
Starts out with an absolute bang with the one-two punch of "So Young" and "Animal Nitrate", and at about this point you realize that the only thing Britpop ever really needed to be great was to sound ten times gayer. Unfortunately, it drops off *hard* after that, and with the exception of "The Drowners", there's not much else here to like too much. But it's crazy how the combination of glam (which I tend to dislike) and Britpop (which I also tend to dislike) ended up creating some songs I actually really love.
So so stuff
Ok
Thoughts before listening: Part of the 90s Britpop scene that was less successful in the US than their contemporaries i.e. Oasis, Pulp, and Blur. I do however recognize this album cover, so they must have made some sort of an impact over here. Maybe I'll recognize a song or two? Review: So this feels like the Britpop band that is most indebted to glam rock and especially David Bowie while also having a bit of the Smiths in their sound. Not just the androgynous cover art of two people of mysterious gender kissing, but also in the sound and overall aesthetic of this album. There are some good songs here and even some of the songs that don't grab me at first evolved into dramatic soundscapes that eventually drew me in. I like "So Young", "Moving", and "Metal Mickey" the best. Overall, I have no nostalgic or emotional attachment to this album, but I am happy to have heard it. 3-stars
Okay in parts, a bit slow for my taste but particular favourites were: - So Young - Animal Nitrate - Moving - Metal Mickey - The Next Life
Suede is really great in theory but are somewhat bland in actuality. Brett Anderson's vocals are cool but are not prominent enough for me to find their sound effective. Lyrics are inconsistent and detract from the tight instrumentation. Still, I can appreciate the influence and their carving out a niche in Britpop history. As far as my preferences for the "big four" within the genre, I think I lean Oasis >> Blur > Suede >>>>>>>>>>>> Pulp
90's radio special. So Young.is decent but not amazing. Ditto for Animal Nitrate. I did much enjoy The Drowners. Metal Mickey another good one.
It started off strong but took a slow descent into Morrissey
It’s fine. It’s just all so British.
I don't know if I consider Suede to be true Brit-pop. They are more glam Brit-pop. The next two Suede albums are my favorite by them and I have always found this album to be less engaging. For me, this is the album that shows what Suede sounded like before they found out what they sounded like. I can't bash it by any means and there is some import to the album, considering the number of sales before it actually was released, but overall, the music is not on par with their other albums. This includes even modern albums, which are also better than this one. Love the band but not my favorite album by them.
melllllllooo
- very much tears for fears like, love it
I liked the other Suede album much more.
Britpop at its arguably earliest and whiniest.
sounds like people don’t like britrock but i enjoyed, i did fall asleep on the way to painted post so could listen again but mostly i feel like i liked it because it was associated with the smiths.
This reminded me a lot of early 80s punk. Which is weird because apparently it’s a 90s Britpop album? Fine I guess.
I was around at the time but was never converted to Suede - too fey, too knowing. I’ve grown more amenable to most stuff from my youth but I knew exactly how this would go: Before listening to the album, I liked the three singles I had heard off and assumed the album tracks wouldn’t be that arresting- and so it was. S’alright.
Classic first generation britpop (Brett will hate me for saying this as they were really in a class of their own)
I promise I really WANT to like 90s music… this is better than most 90s alt rock I guess?
I really thought I’d like London Suede more. This album feels like a Temu 70s glam rock album. It’s got its moments but the band is not high tier 90s Britpop.
The Smiths (if The Smiths were just okay) Best Song: Pantomine Horse Rating: 6.5/10 Stars: 3
Suede are among the better of the britpop bands of the era, and there were moments of this I was into. It wasn’t really my thing though, but can appreciate that’s my issue and this is a good album.
It was background music for me then, but I enjoyed listing to it this time. Favourite track Metal Mickey
I have no thoughts on this
Good variety of sound, like the instrumentals but not super keen on the vocals. Overall decent album and a good listen but doesn't blow my socks off. Really liked Pantomime Horse and Sleeping Pills was quite enjoyable too.
It was fine but nothing to write home about. For the most part rather relaxing background music.
Fine...
Okay but not super. Like the band but this lacked a wow song.
Somewhat sonically interesting. Somewhat vocally painful.
This one was close between 3 and 4. There's definitely something interesting here that in some ways I'd like to explore more. But at the same time it's not interesting enough that I think I'll ever actually do that and so it becomes a 3 from me. Standouts The Next Life 3/5
A pleasing listen but nothing outstanding
Sympa mais pas inoubliable
Perhaps a bit meandering at times, but really digging the raw production quality on this one. Admittedly I'm not the biggest fan of Britpop but this was an enjoyable listen.
I’ve always known Suede were supposed to be one of the pillars of early Britpop, but somehow they completely passed me by in the ’90s. Revisiting their debut now, I can finally answer the question of whether I missed something crucial back then. Short answer: no. There is one undeniable strength here, and that’s Bernard Butler. His guitar work is gorgeous — all chiming arpeggios and beautifully shaped melodies, played with a sense of character Britpop guitarists spent the rest of the decade trying to imitate. If there’s a hero on this record, it’s him. The problem is the other half of the equation. Brett Anderson’s vocals are… an acquired taste, to put it kindly. The fluttering, almost yodel-adjacent delivery can work in theory, but on quieter tracks — of which there are many — it quickly becomes grating. And that’s the other issue: for all its reputation, the album contains surprisingly few songs that actually move me. I gave it plenty of chances, including the full “super-headphones” treatment, but the spark just never arrives. There are exceptions. Pantomime Horse is the one moment where the band truly clicks: dramatic, dynamic, rising and falling with real intent. If the rest of the album had that kind of shape and force, we’d be having a very different conversation. Animal Nitrate comes close, though Anderson’s vocals push it back a step. And The Drowners, one of the supposed highlights, is the kind of track they could easily have left on the cutting-room floor. So no — I didn’t overlook a masterpiece in my youth. I’m still curious about the follow-up (Dog Man Star, before Butler’s dramatic exit), but this debut mostly confirms that not every glittering relic of ’90s guitar music was actually gold.
Nothing that stood out to me, but fine.
Seemed to be well received back in the day, but with the exception of the singles, I thought it was pretty average looking at it through a modern lense
Haunting and unique
Pretty fun but not particularly memorable. Good early ‘90s rock.
Sick riff in Animal Nitrate. The rest just sounded like my old band practice.
I think I wanted to like this more than I did. Animal nitrate is incredible but none of the others really hit home with me. Some of the others had cool sounds. It got a bit Bowie at points such as when a bass sax sound comes in. The vocal pronunciation is interesting and quirky. I may revisit this, but I'm more intrigued by hearing a different album by them.
Thats a real slice of nostalgia. And funny thing is I have the same response now as I had 30 years ago... the singles sound great (esp metal Mickey) but the rest of the album is disappointing. I think Brett lives locally to me as I have seen him a few times with his family.
Suede I’ve never really jived with Suede, I do like a few of their songs but have never really found Brett Anderson a particularly interesting singer or lyricist, he’s always bit too Morrisey cos-play for me, and clearly in thrall to Bowie, but possessing none of his elan, panache or pizazz - viz the later rhyme of ‘Filmstar, driving in your car’. Despite those reservations I enjoyed a lot of this and found myself warming to him, especially on something as affecting as She’s Not Dead or Sleeping Pills. And the big singles are very good songs, Animal Nitrate and Metal Mickey, and there is an overall, slowed down melancholic feel to much of it. But then for great stuff like that there is always something like Moving, where I find his vocal affectations a bit much. I think the main reason though, that I enjoyed it is due to Bernard Butler’s stellar guitar playing. Whether knocking out chunky riffs or Ronson-esque lead lines or Stones Roses-esque shimmers or Byrdsian jangles, or a whole other host of sounds, it is a fantastic showcase of his skills. On the edge of 3 and 4, I think I’ll go for a high 3, as I’m still not totally sure about Anderson, but I did enjoy it and I’m interested to revisit it in future. 🐄🐄🐄 Playlist submission: She’s Not Dead
I want to be snarky about Brett Anderson's understudy performance in the role of Queer Rock Star but I can't, simply because I remember what 1993 was like. But that being said, there's less happening here lyrically than it feels like there ought to be. And if anything here's going to make me question my sexuality it's Bernard Butler's effects box.
Pretty mid, all kinda samey
Decent album 3/5
Not as good as the last Suede album we had.
This was ok. 3.1
good, no highlights tho
Highlight Song/s: Animal Nitrate and The Drowners Love how the album is jam-packed with most degenerate lyrics, featuring the favourites: Drugs, sex, and rock and roll. The guitar lines are quite good, kind of garage-y at times, and atmospheric on the other times or on some songs, both. The yelp-styled singing is quite unique and suits the album elements of the album. Now about Animal Nitrate, because it's just that good: I'm amazed a song about male-to-male sex (Animal Nitrate) has a CRAZY good hook, you'd think maybe with something taboo it'd be less poppy but nope. I loved when they played this song at the Brit Awards singing a song about jumping on a persons bones whilst high, in front of these guys in suits. The singer giving off a confrontational vibe, the bassist dropping his guitar with no regards after the performance and them walking straight off without waiting for the very forced-sounding applause to end. Punk as fuck!
Some really good tracks, and an already-retro early 80s sound that really crunches. But my attention really wandered.
i prefer dog man star
Empieza muy bien con "So young" y "Animal nitrate" luego no sigue escalando tan bien, pero es un gran disco que creo que no ha perdido nada con el tiempo.
Easy listen.
Good. Not great.
Прикольный рок, иностранный похож на pulp, но с большей энергией. В день отказа было приятно слышать
Meh, I mean it was okay. British mod, glam rock or whatever it is, this just sounds like the rest of it that I have heard. It all starts to sound the same after a while and the voice is just a little grating. I don't hate it, one or two songs would be fine but a whole album is just okay. Maybe the lyrics are super deep and I could get a lot if I listened but I don't want to.
Pleasant enough but not quite worth how hard it was to find. 3.5 stars.
not bad just not in the mood today. 3/5
Hey guess what? I like this. It’s certainly in that British Pop genre that is a real mixed bag of stuff, but I think this time I enjoy this album, particularly the instrumental parts. It does kinda shit the bed in the second half becoming a vastly boring soft rock album
We love Britpop, don’t we? Just look at the Oasis reunion- sold out, prices higher than the Tower of Babel, do they even have enough good songs to justify the pomp and circumstance? This isn’t about Oasis, it’s about Suede’s self-titled album, but the spectre of Britpop remains large enough that people will mortgage their council estate just to go see the Gallagher brothers fight onstage. As I’m not British and wasn’t listening to much music in the mid-90s I’m unable to listen retroactively; no rose-tinted lenses for me. What I hear is music a bit indebted to the Smiths, some other Rough Trade artists of the 80s and of course the Beatles and the Who. There’s a poppiness and an utter Britishness to Suede that ensured they’d never really cross over the pond, much like The Jam and The Smiths before them. ¨Animal Nitrate¨ is killer, a writhing guitar and a soaring chorus. The album in general slithers here and soars there. A bit dark without being mopey, a bit anthemic without being cinematic. The album is enjoyable but, at least for me, not very memorable. Best songs: ¨Animal Nitrate,¨ ¨So Young¨
Like if Bowie did britpop
Not bad for britpop
I didn't think I was going to like this at all, but it's not bad. In fact, it's good for what it is... it's just that what it is isn't my favorite. But, there's definitely good songs on here that I'll revisit... just not the whole album.
Anyone giving this a 5 needs their head checked. Putting Suede in the same bracket as the Beatles, Fleetwood Mack, Nirvana or Stevie Wonder is crazy. Average Britpop. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.
I need to listen to more Suede. Favorite track: So Young 3.5/5
Not as good as the other Suede album on this list, but not bad
Está bueno, pero tampoco tanto. Lo mejor que tiene es la onda.
Sounds like knock off smiths. And I don’t really like the smiths much
I like Suede but I don’t think we need 2 of their albums on this list.
solid, no bangers.
different
This is a decent album and comes with high energy and a consistent sound. I get the comparisons to The Smiths.
Okay
There were a couple good songs, but not really anything that was super memorable. I enjoyed the mix of sounds and wouldn’t mind if it came on in the background. Middle of the road album.
Not bad. Really nothing to complain about here. I would probably give it a 3.5 if I could.
One of the better bands from the Britpop era, very recognisable vocals over more generic music. Not bad but it doesn't move me much.
Brit alt cry rock
Another Brit rock album, but this one had some tracks that were enjoyable, I especially liked ‘The Next Life’ but the others weren’t so impactful.
There's definitely something here, it's a lot of great Bri'ish guitar music all put in a big pot and stirred up! 3.5*
What’s annoying about this one is that there’s some good stuff here hiding in the schmaltz. “Pantomime Horse” and “Metal Mickey” are awesome. But there’s so much more that’s not great and that sounds incredibly dated. Next to this, the popularity of grunge makes so much sense.
In 2025, sounds like very generic UK rock. Tried it twice, but, ultimately, very forgettable. Couple tracks with some good guitar work.
If The Smiths and The Cure had a band baby this could be it.
This was fine I guess.
8/22/25. Expanding my Britpop knowledge with this one, some really good songs on here. First half is strong and enjoyed that it's not simple songs all the way through.
so young- 5 or 6 animal nitrate- 5 or 6 shes not dead- 5 moving- 5 or 6 pantomime horse- 5 the drowners- 5 or 6 sleeping pills- 5 breakdown- 4 or 5 metal mickey- 5 animal lover- 5 no more its like almost good but it falls into a lot of pitfalls most britpop does which is called being very boring
Wasn't sure what to expect from this, don't think I've ever listened to them before. I see the Bowie thing definitely, and it's a bit glam rock too. Fine, but not really my cup of tea.
Enjoyable with notes of Bowie. New to me.
Average Brit pop 80s album.
Suede are very recognisable, largely thanks to their vocalists style that reminds me a little of my voice breaks in my teenage years… Some good tunes, but most likely only memorable due to previous exposure. Favourite track was probably “She’s Not Dead”. Listening to albums on my Thameslink journeys does help to pass the time!
A very solid 3 stars. Suede will always have sentimental value to me as they were the first band I ever saw live with my family, I must have been 11 or 12. I might have given this 4 stars if not for Brett Anderson’s sharply descending vocal inflictions on almost every word. It gets irritating - he didn’t do it when we saw them live, and they sounded much better for it. In places it sounds quite Bowie-esque, wrapped up in a britpop package. Also sounds similar to Blur, who in my opinion were much better. I’m 26 and am fortunate enough to have seen Suede, Blur, Oasis, Richard Ashcroft, and Supergrass. And I’m seeing Radiohead soon, to put an end to my own britpop era!
первый брит что-то сначала кажется вообще не знаком, потом кажется очень знаком и в целом заунывен, как положено!
7.5/10 Suede's self-titled album is the most sensual and dreamy britpop I've ever heard!! (the lead singer sounds a little wimpish, but that's okay) It's britpop for people who dislike the genre. (à la Parklife) it's more palatable than the quirky britpop I'm used to. this will be a grower for sure!! top three tracks: • So Young • Animal Nitrate • Sleeping Pills least favourite track: • The Next Life
Decent enough Britpop ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
A stronger 3, this was perfectly enjoyable. I don’t think it has the songwriting strength of The Smiths or the catchy hooks of The Cure but it sits nicely in that sweet spot genre-wise. A nice way to while away the best part of an hour.
I was a little dismissive at first but actually not a bad album. I would turn this on its head though not specifically a trend setting thing or even original. It to me had elements of what came before it not the other way around. That said its a decent compilation of songs which for the most part were strong. I did like Pantomine Horse when I first heard it and while familiar in many ways you cant deny that Suede had an unique blend and characteristic. They are not titans but a decent listen and not nullified by boring norms that are typical of such bands.
Two tracks in and I was enjoying the vibes but I thought the recording was strangely distant and weak sounding. I'm no music technician, but somehow this was a feature of the production in few of the tracks on the album, like they were playing in a hole. Other than that, I really enjoyed the majority of the album. It's like a blend of The Cure, The Smiths, and a touch of Blur, "Pantomime Horse" exemplifying this Brit-Rock cocktail. Although a solid album, I found myself asking whether they had created anything new. Its more like a pleasing amalgam of other great band's sounds. Definitely an interesting listen from a historical perspective, but doesn't tip over the threshold of great album.
A band with a very unique voice and some good indie rock throughout. The album is very high and low. Some songs are great and I added them to playlists others don't catch my attention at all. That is true for a lot of albums though.
Good album.
Ok
Nothing of note.
Could be Oasis, could be Blur, could be Pulp. Need i go on? Not a bad album, but boy was Britpop a congested genre in the 90s
# Album Name: Suede # Artist: Suede # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Not bad. This album has two stand out songs with Animal nitrate and drowners. The rest sound like generic birtpop. Not offensive but not particularly standout to me. Even though i do like the genre. It was just a bit standard. # Top Tunes: Animal nitrate / Drowners # Would I listen to it again? Maybe
It’s not bad. Arguably, it’s pretty good. I’m just not much for the post punk, new wave, glam phase of the 90’s. Plus, sounds like U2 and the Smiths love child.
When I first started listening to this album, I could point out almost immediately just how much this reminded me of David Bowie. Suede's music is reminiscent of Bowie's to some degree, but I suppose that is unsurprising given that Suede was inspired by him. This album in particular was heavily influenced by his Ziggy Stardust era, and it shows. It definitely leans more into melodrama and didn't really strike me the way the other Britpop albums I have received from that era have. However, I thought that it was quite good. I can not stress enough how much I enjoyed the song Animal Nitrate in particular.
3 Stars (8/15)
Uno de tantos álbumes de rock alternativo de los 90...
I listened to this album 3 times, and with each time, I liked it less and less. I think I could just summarize this album as a compilation of two type of tracks. On one hand you have a more energetic and riff-focused songs and on the other you have the more sad or melancholic ones, but in the end, both types sound very similar and the majority land on the second type. I also have to mention that the vocals sounds very unique, and it sounds like they took inspiration on the New Wave sound, or at least that's the feeling I get. Anyway, this a very decent britpop album, with an energy similar to "grunge", but I don't think it has anything memorable.
Some great songs. Can see why there was so much excitement over the band with this debut album.
A very recognisable 80s British pop sound for me. Quite liked it, therefore a firm 3 rating.
It’s nice
Good songs with the force multiplier of insanely beautiful frontman.
Oh look, a 90s album that is capitalizing on the sound of bands that came 5, 10 or even 20 years before!
kinda weird
So much Britpop on this list. Decent, but I prefer their second album much more.
Bon. Un album correct. Juste correct. Rien d’impressionnant, mais rien de mauvais non plus. Un album correct, qui existe, ququi s’écoute, sans plus.
6/10 - it was fine not very memorable
I wanna like suede because they’re just another 90s britpop adjacent band but I just can’t get into them. Pretty boring album
Starts off strong, but overall, too long.
More Brit early 90s alternative rock. Cool little record I liked it. Never heard of these guys but apparently they inspired bigger acts like oasis. Never made it big. Worth the listen.
I don't hate this but I don't love it either. enjoyable to listen to but nothing quite grabs me
2.5 Oof that was rough. Really, really dull. It felt a bit aimless, bouncing round. The terrible Smiths-esque one right near the end killed it off
Britpop and Glam cocktail with a dash of smack on the rim. This is a band that personify the phrase 'elegantly wasted' - of course the issue is that it is not always a good thing. Much like this album. Some great tracks rub shoulders with the not so great. Brett Anderson's vocals can get a bit much. Mind you, this album is better than Dog Man Star and that's on the list so why not this one as well. Best Tracks: So Young; Animal Nitrate; Metal Mickey
3,5/5 Starts incredibly strong; "Animal Nitrate" is so amazing that the rest of the track list has a hard time keeping up, frankly.
Ihan mukavaa musisointia ja muutamat passelimmat kappaleet. Ei silti halua kuunnella uudelleen.
3/5 for influence.
I dont really like this sound very much, but this album was still pretty listenable. Didn't finish it though.
6/10
Didn’t really love the vocals. But compared to other bands from that part of the world in that era, I found it less “shoe-gazey” than Oasis and less pretentiously artsy than Radiohead. Overall, somewhat not awful.
The vocals bordered on annoying. The music got better as the album went on.
Hä, scho weder Brit-Pop? Ergendwie werd's langsam chli langwiilig. Ned dass es schlächt seg oder so. S ganze Albom tönt halt e chli ähnlech and Brit-pop esch jetzt halt au scho es paar mol cho. Vorallem die erschte zwöi send aber no guet.
By track 3 I started liking it. Some soaring moments grabbed my attention amidst some fine shoegazey and spacey rock sounds. Sleeping Pills and Breakdown I enjoyed the most.
The first three tracks on the album feel like a big mess with unintelligible vocals due to poor mixing. Suede picks up after a faulty start with good energy on "Moving" and an immersive soundscape on "Pantomime Horse". The rest of the album didn't really move me, so I don't feel like I can give it more than 3 stars.
This was a pretty good one. Better than I expected! I would listen to most of this again. I recently gave the gears to some British band, saying that all British bands fall into the idea of “What if we wrote a Beatles song?” at least once per album. That wasn’t the full story: sometimes they do that with Bowie too. This one had a fake Bowie song. Low point of the album. Annoying.
Suede was a bit of a tough sell in my group of friends. The book on Suede even before this came out (and we were confusingly told they were called the London Suede back in the States), was that they were into fucking. Everything. The androgynous cover of two people kissing betrayed a friendliness with bisexuality or homosexuality, still a bit of a shocker for early 1990s sensibilities, but then there’s a song called Animal Lover? You can imagine how this went over with a bunch of adolescent dudes (true to form, I shrugged, maybe we should listen to the tunes first eh?). As to the music and presentation, the angst felt performative in a way grunge and punk did not, very much the heirs to Morrissey and Marr right down to an overly dramatic singer with a gift for saying “outrageous things” and a mercurial, but kind-hearted guitar virtuoso. I didn’t go back to Suede for a few years until the release of Sci-Fi Lullabies, a rightly celebrated feature of British rock: the singles/b-sides collection. Largely due to cost - the albums carrying an inflated price - the singles market in the UK was viable and catered to in a way the US was not: great songs by The Smiths, Morrissey, Belle & Sebastian, Oasis, Pulp, etc were initially or only released as singles. The Beatles even had this written into their contract at first: 4 singles/2 albums per year. Add Suede to this tradition (although curiously Blur stayed away from this practise?). Sci-Fi got written up, at least in the American music press, as a way to catch up on a UK band that was more than a flash in the pan glam act. After that I made my way back through Coming Up and the s/t. The debut is still, to my ears, a bit short on quality past the singles. This is true for all of the Suede catalog - couple good tunes and then a great deal of vamping by Brett and whoever constitutes his songwriting compadres at the time. I imagine this same criticism can be levelled at any number of my favs - either you buy the whole schtick or you don’t. The Drowners and Animal Nitrate, plus b-side My Insatiable One (how was this a b-side?), all tremendous.
britpop do fim dos 80/começo dos 90. vale ouvir de novo pra reavaliar!!
Love Brit pop, this was a vibe, but nothing really stuck out
So Young Animal Nitrate The Drowners Metal Mickey
perfectly fine britpop. not much to say about this one
I think I had them confused with a badn from the 70s...did not hate this though.
Another 3+ hour long record!? Didn’t know about this band so was glad to become familiar with them, but this many songs for too many hours is not how I wanted to do that. Was fine.
An eemo debut (with a little of The Cure and a hint of early Bowie.) Familiar with them from our previous listen, once again I’m Swayed. (3.3*s) I think the reason they didn’t make it bigger in the US was due to poor timing. Grunge was the music over here in the early 90s. Bad luck.
Maybe Suede is bigger in England or have a far reaching influence that I'm unaware of because I didn't find anything special about this debut album. It's an OK listen but it does little to differentiate itself from a handful of other albums by bands that never hit the big time. A couple of the singles were OK but the rest of the album was mostly just filler. Even though its only 45 minutes long, the album starts to run together and by the end of it I'm not sure I could really tell you anything of detail about what I listened to. Starting to realize why despite being a fan of britpop Suede was never on my radar. Looks to be pretty in line with my prior review of Dog Man Star by Suede. Very middle of the pack. 2.58 stars
Back in the day, I tried really hard to enjoy this album. I had a friend who just loved it. I never quite understood the appeal. It's fine but...
A bit on the fence with this one. Like the majority of brit pop, I personally find it fairly bland despite having some obvious highlights. Definitely an influence on Radiohead, and you can hear the Bowie, Smiths, and Roxy influences. The cover of Brass in Pocket is really solid, and now I just want to listen to the Pretenders.
Альбом заинтересовал, хоть и есть в брит-попе какой-то общий изъян. Думал какую оценку ставить.
Not bad. But not my style
It would be hard for this album to match the hype, because the hype was off the scale. It’s good but only in places. Suede are at their best in introspective, difficult teenage mode than in cocky confident mode; Tracks like She’s Not Dead and Pantomime Horse confirm that misery makes for better songwriting than happiness. These are tracks where Anderson channels Morrissey. Bernard Butler ploughs his own much more overdriven furrow than Johnny Marr ever did with The Smiths. The track Breakdown sounds early Bowie, though otherwise I can’t see the much vaunted connection. Glam I can see clearly but Bowie was generally less direct and obvious than this. The real difficulty for me is that I don’t like Brett Anderson’s vocal delivery. It’s too stylised and unnatural. He’s a much better lyricist than singer. I’d say the deep tracks on this album are better than the big singles which heralded it’s release. My top track is the closer The Next Life which I found genuinely emotional. So all in all, a good album, but not quite a great album.
Enjoyable enough, could hear the influences. Better than I thought it would be.
Nothing to write home about.
I struggled to connect with this album—there was nothing particularly bad about it, but I just couldn't get into it. Everything sounded really similar for some reason. 3 stars
Not terrible by any means, but I didn’t feel the need to listen to it again. Which is normally a good indicator that something doesn’t quite do it for me. I’m just a bit too old to have gotten in to all the Brit pop stuff. Maybe if I were 10’years younger this would have been fabulous. Certainly bits were OL and some of the guitar work was quite pleasant
This is a me problem, but I was expecting something more new wave or punk adjacent. This is full of ballads. Like they are good but it's just not my speed.
This may have been the first big Britpop record, and it's a nice little one. But, of course, better albums in the genre would follow. I really like Brett Anderson's theatrical vocals, though. Key tracks: So Young Animal Nitrate The Drowners
I recognize the skill but not my vibe
This wasn’t bad. Certainly wasn’t what I expected. Need more time for a proper review. But time I don’t have today.
actually I quite liked this one (~3.5 ★) - kind of cool, reminds me of the smiths etc
Not a huge fan of his voice but it works. Really liked everything else which surprised me a lil bit. Would be 4 star w more likable voice
This.. felt like glam rock put through a Britpop filter and then ironed flat. Not in a bad way, just… smooth. It has some swagger, some sex, but kind of in that overly self-aware “look at me” way. Think a less charming Pulp, or like early Blur if Blur were trying to get laid too hard. A lot of the songs hit a cool groove and then just sat in it until they got bored. I didn’t hate it, but it also didn’t move me anywhere. More mood than momentum. Not bad background noise for a rainy day with nothing on the calendar, which was apparently today. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - So Young - Animal Nitrate - The Drowners
I like it but enough britpop already!
Sounds like The Smiths without any of the tension and talent that made the Smiths great. 5/10 Ten years late to a party no one wanted to go to.
Never listened to Suede to be honest, its very BRI'ISH Dad rock. Quite forgettable to be honest. Not much stood out to me but I did enjoy the riffs towards the end of Moving.
I'd probably like this more if the lead singer wasn't trying to do his best Morrissey impression on a lot of the tracks. Still a solid 90s Britpop album. 3.5
Sort of 1st Wave rock
Breskt popp. Þetta hlustaði maður á aðallega í gegnum útvarpið í gamla daga, ekki af því að maður hafði svo mikinn áhuga á þessu. Það er ennþá þannig. Ég hef ekki mikinn áhuga og mér finnst enn eins og söngvarinn í Suede sé vælandi í míkrófóninn þegar hann syngur. Samt ekkert leiðinlegt. Bara ekki það sem ég vel að hlusta á.
Listenat
брит-поп, но неплохой.
Nice little album but never really kept me interested.
I wish I liked Suede more. They have all it takes to be a favorite of mine, but the magic only happens on certain tracks. ANd I keep trying to get into this particular album but about half of it just flies over my head. Still good, one day it will finally click with me.
I think Dog Man Star would have been enough on this list, but I still enjoyed this debut.
Not sure how I feel about their singer. The instrumentation is nice. I think my favourite was Sleeping Pills.
If there is a standout element here, it's Bernard Butler's guitar playing. The rest of it is pretty forgettable. Including the overly-British-sounding vocals.
Starts and ends kinda boring, but there’s four or so songs in the middle that really rock. Liked it alright, probably won’t listen to the full album again
A prototype for a ton of music to come through the 90s, pretty enjoyable
ok i like it picasso
Pretty good, blended together a bit too much but maybe that's what I get for listening while running.
